Transcript
- 1:03Hello everybody. Welcome back to the episode the
- 1:05WASD and Beyond Podcast. I'm your host, Nick.
- 1:08Accompanying me this week is none other than Luscious Brody.
- 1:13Hi. Hi, there.
- 1:14Hello. When's the last time you heard
- 1:16that Luscious Brody? It's been a little bit, I mean
- 1:19it's my username on everything now because of podcasting, but
- 1:23no, it's been a while since then.
- 1:25Anyone has actually called me that?
- 1:27Well, I got you on the show. We're not going to get into the
- 1:31topic just yet. I'm going to plug the sponsors
- 1:32in a moment. I'm going to plug the spawn
- 1:34camp, but I want you to plug something that you recently,
- 1:37just what you're starting, what you're doing and what you just
- 1:43put out on the spawn Cam network.
- 1:45Because I think it's sweet, but I want you to explain exactly
- 1:48what it is to everybody who maybe hasn't heard it or doesn't
- 1:51know exactly what you were doing with it.
- 1:53You know what I mean? Yeah, yeah.
- 1:54Yeah. So I.
- 1:57Have gotten into D&DA lot lately.
- 2:01Heavy. And all thanks to to one of our
- 2:05good friends. And then I decided, hey, you're
- 2:08always the DM and never the player, how about IDM?
- 2:10Because D Ming always sounded like a good time to me.
- 2:15And so I started D Ming a campaign and on the second
- 2:19episode we're like, screw it, let's go ahead and record this
- 2:22and. Cuz I knew some friends that
- 2:25wanted to listen to it, cuz they're all into DD podcasts and
- 2:29stuff like that. So we recorded it and I was
- 2:32trying to figure out how to distribute it and the easiest
- 2:35way to distribute it was actually as a podcast.
- 2:38So we created another podcast, even though I'm on a hiatus
- 2:44from. Full time podcasting and it's
- 2:48called Rule for Deception and right now it is currently just
- 2:52my campaign. It's the the campaign I'm
- 2:55running. It's all a post apocalyptic,
- 2:57like kind of real gritty magic doesn't really exist.
- 3:04It's a lot of technology stuff going on, that kind of thing.
- 3:08A lot of Home Rule rules that I've kind of picked up over the
- 3:10years, as well as just some shit that I think makes more sense.
- 3:15And yeah, we're just having a good time with it.
- 3:17It's me and six other degenerates just playing some
- 3:21D&D. It is.
- 3:23I'm not doing a ton of editing on this.
- 3:25It is pretty much you get to listen to us actually play the
- 3:29game. So I cut it at the beginning,
- 3:32cut it at the end. But if you're interested in.
- 3:35In that kind of world, think like Final Fantasy 7 esque,
- 3:39minus some of the guns and and type of shit, but that kind of
- 3:43world setting that's interesting to you.
- 3:45Check out Role for Deception. It'll be kind of a yellow orange
- 3:50background with a cool blue dye on the front, and it should be
- 3:55from the Spawn camp network, so you should see that there and.
- 3:58There's a couple old role for deceptions.
- 4:00That's not us, that's not us. One whole episode so far.
- 4:05Look for the Spawn camp one. Yeah, we'll talk.
- 4:08We'll talk to Noah about getting that all sorted, Yeah.
- 4:13Mr. N designs himself. Well, yeah, right now I threw a
- 4:16pretty quick and dirty logo up just so I could get it out
- 4:19because I was doing it like. 12:00 one night.
- 4:22It's fine, don't worry about it. And I I know it is, but for them
- 4:27this is your first time D Ming right?
- 4:29Yes, this is my first time D Ming.
- 4:32So it the first two episodes have been a little nerve
- 4:35racking, but it's been really fun and I'm having a fucking
- 4:39great time and luckily we have our our normal DM in the party
- 4:43and he's he's a great. Northern Light for me to follow
- 4:48in some of this and also we have another very experienced player,
- 4:52whereas the rest of them are pretty new as well.
- 4:54So it it's a grand old time. I think we're kind of figuring
- 4:59it out. But hey, who knows?
- 5:02See, for me, like with D&D, like I the last time I played D&D
- 5:05before spawn camp and we all got together and we attempted,
- 5:10right. Like D&D is always that thing
- 5:12where you like, you attempt to get a group going and everyone's
- 5:15so into it and so stoked, and then come time to play, there's
- 5:19like half the party goes, dude, I really can't right now, which
- 5:22unfortunately happened to me with your campaign.
- 5:24But I mean, yeah. What happens, dude?
- 5:27Well, I don't think most of the guys know that I'm gonna be
- 5:28hopping in eventually. I'm really excited to kind of
- 5:31spook them when I hop in. But, like, I don't think they
- 5:34know that there's another guy that's probably gonna be hopping
- 5:36in soon, too. You're about to hate people in
- 5:38your first campaign. It'll be fine.
- 5:39It'll be fine. We'll figure it out.
- 5:41You're a madman. But the last time I played D&DI
- 5:44was at like a college. I wasn't attending the college,
- 5:48but I went and played D&D at the college.
- 5:50Yeah, while I knew people at the college, we played D&D.
- 5:53So like, but that was in person. And like we're now in 5E.
- 5:57So, like, some things have changed and like playing online
- 6:01is definitely, you know, something for me you like, get
- 6:03used to and trying to remember the rules and how to actually
- 6:06use my because I'm a paladin in our Knicks campaign and I'm a
- 6:10paladin. That doesn't heal and everyone's
- 6:11like, what are you doing? I'm like, holy shit, I fucking
- 6:14this up royally because I treat my paladin usually as like a
- 6:17warrior with heels. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:19You know what I mean? So like I need, I need to sell
- 6:22my role. But anyways, yeah, check that.
- 6:24Yeah, I've gotten entirely I I've played more Dnd related
- 6:29things and done more Dnd related things than I have actually
- 6:32played video games lately. Like I am all the way in and
- 6:37plus Dming if if you don't think you're DM.
- 6:41You absolutely fucking should cuz it is a lot of work.
- 6:44It is. It gives me a whole new like
- 6:47perspective on it. And I'm not saying I want
- 6:50things, but definitely if you have been running a game for a
- 6:53long time, thank your fucking DM.
- 6:54They are putting in the work for sure.
- 6:57I couldn't do it. There's there's there's no way I
- 7:00could do that. It's not in me.
- 7:03Yeah, it's. It's perfect for me because my
- 7:07fucking ADD is like sends me off in a million different
- 7:11directions and then the hardest parts just tying it back
- 7:13together. So I love it though, like it.
- 7:16It is so much fun. I love building the world,
- 7:19creating like cool little traps or neat little things for, you
- 7:23know, the party to run into. It it.
- 7:24It genuinely brings me joy to hear that people enjoyed a a
- 7:29session, so they either love the DM or they fear the DM.
- 7:34So you're tiptoeing right now, and it's only session three
- 7:37right? Session 3 right?
- 7:40They may fear me after tomorrow. Well I'll be.
- 7:44I can't wait to hear that because you're about to.
- 7:46I don't know man. I know how Dms get get you know
- 7:49what I mean? Like just playing.
- 7:50It's like yeah, they start out really fucking cool and it's
- 7:54like, oh hey man, that that's spell you just tried to use.
- 7:57Yeah. You're not set up to use that.
- 7:59And also, I'm attacking you and now you're dead.
- 8:02So figure it out and it's like, holy shit.
- 8:05Yeah, I don't have any intention to doing any of that shit, but I
- 8:08definitely have some difficult sessions coming up for them I
- 8:13could imagine. One of them may not even be
- 8:16possible, and but I have a there's a whole back door for
- 8:19it. It's fine.
- 8:19We got to figure it out. It's cool.
- 8:20It's cool. It's cool.
- 8:21It's cool. It's going to be cool anyways.
- 8:26Please guys, please check out Role for Deception on the Swan
- 8:29Camp network created by yours truly, Brody.
- 8:32Brody Faults created this and I'm very stoked that he is back
- 8:36in some capacity, but we'll get more into that as I convinced
- 8:40him to stay on the podcast for good.
- 8:42While you guys are here and listening, please check out the
- 8:44sponsors of the show that is Final Boss and Doc Longey both
- 8:48have drops coming out. Final Boss had put up some of
- 8:52The Leftovers recently. If you missed those you guys
- 8:56have had two chances. Three chances.
- 8:57Now pick. I see people every time like oh
- 9:00I really wish I could have gotten that shirt and it's like
- 9:02it's up right now. Buy it now.
- 9:05Like go get the shit you want. Who cares.
- 9:08Money is. It's not real.
- 9:10Just fucking spend spend, spend, fucking mortgage.
- 9:12Not long the same thing. Just just spend.
- 9:14Support them by supporting them. You support us and we love you
- 9:17for that. Also check out the Spawn camp
- 9:19network now with a new show role for Deception.
- 9:23You could check that. Are you just what is the
- 9:26schedule like for that? So I don't butcher that for you.
- 9:29I will say if you've ever played D&D before, you know how hard it
- 9:33is to get that many people together.
- 9:36But we are planning on basically every other week.
- 9:40So I think yeah, yeah, it should be about every other week, give
- 9:45or take. And I will typically load
- 9:48probably Mondays I think is when they'll mostly go up.
- 9:52So I'll have that nice and ready and you can listen to it
- 9:55throughout the week. They are long, I will say.
- 9:57I mean, they are, they are chunks and I've even thought
- 9:59about breaking them into sections a little bit.
- 10:02That would be cool. Regardless, for now, this is how
- 10:05it's gonna work. Just for the sake of it, you can
- 10:07pause it and listen to it later. But yeah, it every other week or
- 10:11so. So yeah, the next one should be
- 10:13going up on next Monday, which would be, what is that, the
- 10:1713th? Something like that, bro. 14th.
- 10:2014th of August. Yeah, check that.
- 10:23Check that out. Spawn camp loses 2 shows, we
- 10:26regain another. We're going to grow again.
- 10:27We're going to, we're going to rekindle this fire we've created
- 10:30all together. So yeah, check that out.
- 10:32Hop in the Discord. It's free.
- 10:33There will never be a paid wall. You hop in, you game with us,
- 10:36you watch TV with us, you watch movies with us.
- 10:38You do hobbies with us. We're currently there's a big
- 10:4040K more him 40K sweep happening in the server.
- 10:44Matt's back into it. I'm back into it.
- 10:46Logan's into it. Final bosses into 40K again.
- 10:50Like it's only a matter of time for chaos.
- 10:52Infects everybody in the server and everyone starts getting 40K
- 10:55models. Brody.
- 10:56I can't. No, I can't, he said.
- 10:59He can't. He's like, absolutely not.
- 11:01Sir, I got too much shit going on, man.
- 11:03But dude, you don't need that. Look at this little fella.
- 11:06Come on, man. I still have two Gundams that I
- 11:08gotta build, man, but like, look at this $50 mini.
- 11:11It's sweet. It wasn't 50 bucks.
- 11:14It wasn't no for the whole We're not.
- 11:16We're not doing that today. That wasn't 50 bucks.
- 11:19It was not just being an asshole because Games Workshop prices
- 11:21are fucked. I I will say that their their
- 11:24their prices are fucked. But yes, if you want to do and
- 11:27hang out with us, sweet, come in, enjoy.
- 11:30If you want to listen to Brody's Dungeons of Dragons game, hop
- 11:34in. Listen right?
- 11:36Like that's what everyone's doing in Knicks campaign.
- 11:38If you want to listen, come in, deafen up, mute up.
- 11:41Just listen to the fucking campaign happen.
- 11:43Life I. Did forget to say sorry before
- 11:46you take off your yeah. Not to completely take over your
- 11:49your beginning, but we are going to probably be uploading the
- 11:53other campaign, Nick's campaign once we get going.
- 11:56Are we doing that? I think so.
- 11:58I have to talk it over with him but I don't think he would have
- 12:01a problem with it. But that being said, that is
- 12:03much more of a fantasy based campaign.
- 12:05So if you aren't into the cyber monkey type shit like.
- 12:08That's perfectly fine. I get it.
- 12:10It was just something unique that I wanted to try, and we
- 12:14will be having a an actual fantasy campaign by a much, much
- 12:18more experienced DM. So Fawn Camp presents Dungeons
- 12:24and Disasters with the gang. It's basically what it is.
- 12:28Dungeons and shenanigans, for sure.
- 12:31Dungeons and Matt Grant likes to argue for 45 minutes about if he
- 12:34stole silverware or not. He did.
- 12:37You did steal silverware. He definitely stole it.
- 12:39Yeah, you're a fucking snake. Anyways, so Brody, I brought you
- 12:44on today. I brought you on today cuz we're
- 12:46both 30 and plus now 31. You're 30 years old.
- 12:51We're old. We both have children.
- 12:54Yes. So there's a few things I was
- 12:56thinking about. One I really wanted to tackle,
- 13:00like how gaming and hobbying and just being a part of this, you
- 13:05know what I mean? Like the nerd culture that we
- 13:07are so a part of and that we grew up with and then we held to
- 13:10ourselves how that has changed while having children.
- 13:13Your children are a lot older than mine.
- 13:15Like, you know, Landon's 3 years old, your boys are 11 and eight,
- 13:20right? So like big age difference for
- 13:22you. So like you're able to maybe
- 13:24nestled back into your hobbies. But for me it's one of those
- 13:28things where it's like when and if I have time, if he's being
- 13:32cool that day and all that. So I definitely want to tackle a
- 13:35little bit of that, but I also want to tackle a lot of the
- 13:39stigma that is behind gaming when it comes to children,
- 13:42right? Like from a parent's
- 13:44perspective, that's what I want to tackle first.
- 13:47We'll get into, we'll get into the nasty 1st and then we'll get
- 13:49into the nice at the end. Okay.
- 13:51From a parent's perspective, you know, even growing up like my
- 13:54parents, like, the biggest thing to them was as long as you
- 13:58understand that this isn't real, you can play it.
- 14:02If you can digest this media and you understand that it's not
- 14:06real, you're allowed to digest that media, whether it be
- 14:08movies, music, video games, what have you, right?
- 14:12But in the news, it doesn't matter.
- 14:14CNN, Fox, Newsmax, whatever, whatever news station, as soon
- 14:19as something happens in the country that is traumatic, that
- 14:21is ridiculous. It's always in some fashion
- 14:26pointed towards video games. It's a huge proponent of their
- 14:29argument. Well, it's violence and video
- 14:30games, it's sex and video games, It's this and video games and I
- 14:35think that's very detrimental to non gaming parents.
- 14:40Does that make sense? Like parents who like didn't
- 14:42grow up with gaming like you and I did, and then their kids don't
- 14:46get to experience the worlds that we've experienced, you know
- 14:49what I'm saying? Like that's what, like my
- 14:52thought process on this whole episode was.
- 14:54It's like, you see this shit and yeah, there are games like
- 14:58Manhunt and there are even more. I mean, that's not even like a
- 15:02violent game anymore, right? Like it is.
- 15:04But like play The Last of Us Part 2, right?
- 15:07That is. Manhunt, that was, once you know
- 15:11this, this staple is like one of the most crazy games out there
- 15:16is commonplace, right? Like, that's just another game
- 15:19at this point. Yeah, it's it's it's almost
- 15:22Arcadian, just like cartoonish now.
- 15:24But then you look at something like Last of Us Part 2.
- 15:27That's just like the first game that popped my head because of
- 15:29how visceral it is, right? Like when you kill someone in
- 15:31that game, like, you kill them in that game, Like their bodies
- 15:36react as to someone getting stabbed or shot.
- 15:40But I don't think that video games are really the fucking
- 15:42issue here. No, like, it's not.
- 15:44You know what I mean? Like for me, my parenting is
- 15:47going to go the same as I was parented with Landon, which is,
- 15:52if you understand this, that this piece of media was, is art
- 15:56and was created for you to digest as art, not imitate.
- 15:59You can play it because I can remember fucking loading up
- 16:03fuck, Doom, Duke Nukem, Quake, like Tomb Raider, all these
- 16:08fucking games as a kid and going yeah, it's just, it's it's just
- 16:11a game. I never wanted a fucking.
- 16:14I did want to be a a Doom marine of course.
- 16:17Like, I wanted to go to Mars and kill demons, but I'm not just
- 16:22going to go to the playground and start fucking punching some
- 16:25kid repeatedly in the nose, calling him a demon, right?
- 16:29So like, that's like my, that, that was my question.
- 16:30Do you like, do you at all agree with the correlation that that
- 16:35has any links to what happens, like when it comes to children
- 16:40that are prone to violence? Because that's like the biggest
- 16:42thing to discuss. Like this child was violent
- 16:45because he played this video game or listen to this, or he
- 16:47did that or he did this, you know what I mean?
- 16:50Absolutely not. No, I I think 9 times out of 10,
- 16:54if there is a child that is violent or whatever it may be, I
- 16:59think one a lot of times it's parenting, like quite frankly
- 17:04just not keeping that shit in check, letting them do whatever
- 17:06the hell they want. Like that is usually a problem
- 17:09or mental illness, right? Like I I think those are
- 17:12typically the two things I've coached kids since.
- 17:17My oldest was four years old. I I have seen a lot of kids that
- 17:22have come through different baseball programs, football,
- 17:24soccer, like whatever it may be. And you can tell who has a
- 17:32parent that is actually involved and pays attention to what
- 17:35they're doing and actually, you know, sets boundaries for the
- 17:38children and you can tell who doesn't.
- 17:40And it it's beyond clear. And anyone who says it's because
- 17:45of video games is absolutely fucking wrong.
- 17:47Like I I just there's no if ands or buts about it.
- 17:50Do could they learn a specific move?
- 17:52Like could they learn how to suplex somebody from it?
- 17:55Sure. Would they do something else
- 17:57instead? Yeah they would absolutely
- 17:59fucking walk up and punch somebody in the face.
- 18:01Not even think about it like that is not that is not some
- 18:05That kind of behavior is not learned from video games.
- 18:09But yeah, they could. They could, you know, maybe they
- 18:13played Mortal Kombat and they want to fucking try to throw a
- 18:15chain through somebody. Yeah, they probably learned that
- 18:19from Mortal Kombat, but like, ultimately, yeah, right.
- 18:25But at the end of the day, like it it all boils down to every
- 18:29child that I have seen that has been a bully or misbehaved or
- 18:32something. They have either been told they
- 18:34are the greatest person their entire life, which is a problem
- 18:38as well. And or they have been, you know
- 18:43a lot of times and I this isn't a knock on it but a lot of times
- 18:46coming from a single parent home because this single parent is so
- 18:50damn busy that they have a hard time actually being able to
- 18:53parent. And that's not a knock on single
- 18:55parents by any means or any. Like stretch by, It's difficult.
- 18:59All accounts? That's fucking brutal.
- 19:01I don't wish that upon anyone, right?
- 19:03But a lot of times that's what I see, right?
- 19:06And that's just from my experience with these kids over
- 19:09the years. And I mean that's what 7 years
- 19:12of coaching and and being involved in in a lot of
- 19:15different things or you know even just their friends.
- 19:18And and not to say you know every kid from a single parent
- 19:23or anything is going to have problems like this or or a
- 19:26parent that is completely disconnected that kid is going
- 19:29to have issues like that's not the the thing either but.
- 19:32Those are usually some of the circumstances that are more
- 19:34likely to cause it, and I'm sure there's a lot of people cussing
- 19:38at me right now, but I I it's it's proven like it is a
- 19:42scientific thing. It's like there have been
- 19:45studies all over about this, right?
- 19:47But there has never actually been a study that has been able
- 19:51to link any of that to video games, at least not a
- 19:54comprehensive study that actually had any weight, right.
- 19:57And I mean that's what I was going to bring up to the study
- 19:59because like people like Jack Thompson and we've, we've
- 20:01brought up Jack Thompson before. If you don't know who Jack
- 20:03Thompson is, he was a man. He still is, unfortunately.
- 20:08But he was a person who was prominent and he's a dickhead.
- 20:11He was prominent in the news when Grand Theft Auto was.
- 20:14I mean, I wouldn't say in its heyday, Grand Theft Auto was
- 20:17still a major three in three in San Andreas were the two that he
- 20:23really. Was lobbying against San Andreas
- 20:26more so because when the Hot Coffee mod was figured out, he
- 20:30was like, C told you. But like people are like, dude,
- 20:33I just, I just play the game and yeah, I can bang a hooker in the
- 20:36game. It, I don't know, like it just
- 20:40is what it is. But like going he's he's a he's
- 20:42a dickhead. He's he's one of those people
- 20:43who really pushed forward this notion that video games are the
- 20:49issue. And then Columbine didn't help
- 20:50because they're like, well, look, they played Doom.
- 20:52And it's like, yeah, they played Doom and listened to Marilyn
- 20:56Manson and all this shit, but like, they, that's not what,
- 20:59like pushed them. And that's not what pushes
- 21:01people. But you brought up the singles.
- 21:04Especially that one. Like that very clearly a mental
- 21:07health issue. And and and when a lot of this
- 21:10stuff was taking off in the 90s and early 2000s, like mental
- 21:14health was not at the forefront, like nobody was paying any
- 21:17fucking attention to me. It hasn't been until the last.
- 21:205-10 years that mental health has actually been something that
- 21:24we're like, oh, no, like, counseling's fine.
- 21:27Like it's not a thing for for, you know, I don't know what
- 21:33you're right. Right.
- 21:33Like like back in the day, that's how they viewing starts
- 21:38to kick in. Yeah, like the 90s.
- 21:40Like, it was a different time. It was a, oh, you're not a man
- 21:43if you go to counseling. And it's like, that's not,
- 21:45that's not fucking true, right? Like that is the stigma that
- 21:48came with it for forever. And so finally, we're we are
- 21:52allowing especially young boys to go to counseling because they
- 21:57fucking need it. Like being a teenage boy is a
- 22:00goddamn nightmare. A teenage girl is too, but being
- 22:04a boy, it's like your head is like boobs, The video.
- 22:09Games, violence, video games. Like, yeah, like, that's all it
- 22:13is. It is just a constant loop of
- 22:15like three things. How can I change the TV contrast
- 22:19so I can see Lara Croft's boobs right?
- 22:21Exactly but. Yeah, it's it's one of those
- 22:26wild things that, you know, the stigmas, the stereotypes, the
- 22:30the things from the generation before us that trickled into our
- 22:33generation are the things that are haunting us.
- 22:36And then now our generations problems trickle into the
- 22:39generation following us and now they become their problems as
- 22:42well. And it's this vicious cycle,
- 22:44right? But like ultimately the we're
- 22:47slowly getting better. But you know this this huge
- 22:50focus on on the mental health thing is is the best thing that
- 22:53could ever fucking happen. Because I I very much believe
- 22:57the same thing for the longest time, right?
- 22:58Like I've refused to do counsel. I have been to counseling like
- 23:01I'm I have no shame saying that. I It was a fucking great thing
- 23:06for me and a great thing for my family and I I would never,
- 23:11ever, ever fucking shame anybody for doing what they need to do
- 23:15to get themselves. That's so dope.
- 23:16That shit's fucking dope, dude. That's something I need to look
- 23:19into. Hey, better help.
- 23:20Let's let's sponsor the I have some issues that your counselors
- 23:23would love to hear about as discussed on OBO.
- 23:29They're going to raise your premium, my guy, dude, that I'm
- 23:32going to have to. They're going to be like, we
- 23:33don't have somebody for you right now.
- 23:35Sir. You're going to be like, I don't
- 23:39know what to tell you. You you, holy shit wounds have
- 23:42reopened. You brought up the single family
- 23:44household. And so I pretty much from the
- 23:47age of, I don't know, like my dad was there a lot, but he
- 23:51wasn't mentally. So from the age of like 10 till
- 23:54I moved out when I was 16 or so, it was just me, my brothers, my
- 23:58mom. And I can remember, like, her
- 24:00getting home from work. And we'd be like, yo, like, we
- 24:02need entertainment, right? So we'd go to like a blockbuster
- 24:06or we would go to somewhere, right?
- 24:09And I'd be like, yo, can I get this?
- 24:10And without even hesitation, at like 13 and was, yeah, I don't
- 24:14give a shit, not out of her not caring, but out of her going,
- 24:18yeah, go ahead and get it. But like, she also knew with us.
- 24:22Like, we again, we were told this is just entertainment.
- 24:25You digest it and it's out of your system.
- 24:29But like I it sucks though for a lot of other kids who might not
- 24:32understand that. But again, that goes back to the
- 24:36parents. It just goes back to the
- 24:37parents. It's not the game, it's not the
- 24:39the developers, it's not the studios, it's it's the parent.
- 24:42Like, hey, this is a product that has a giant letter M on it.
- 24:49You, the ESRB was created for a reason.
- 24:53It's created for parents to understand this title is OK for
- 24:56this fucking kid or this group of people.
- 24:58This title's okay for this and this is good for this.
- 25:02Yeah, it's a standard that's been around just like the
- 25:04parental advisory stick around a fucking CD back in the day, You
- 25:06know what I mean? So.
- 25:09I'm always amazed at the things that some parents let their kids
- 25:13play. Like for me, I mean, I came from
- 25:16a very sheltered home like my parents were very strict about.
- 25:21Up until I basically became like an actual teenager.
- 25:25Then they kind of stopped giving you shit as far as like what I
- 25:27played and everything, right? But I mean, I remember I wasn't
- 25:31allowed to play like shooting games for the most part because
- 25:34oh, blood, blood, blood, blood, blood, you know, and and fair
- 25:38enough to a certain extent, right?
- 25:39Like they're coming from the generation that didn't know what
- 25:42to fucking do with all this. But I also like my kids are 8:00
- 25:46and 11:00 and. They don't really get to play
- 25:49games that have blood in it either right?
- 25:51Like it's just they I I'm not a get like they play Fortnite.
- 25:57They have played Fortnite for years and I have never had an
- 26:00issue with that. But also like I let my oldest
- 26:04play a little bit of Halo, right, Like he's killing aliens.
- 26:09But I, I, I think there's a certain point of like one you
- 26:12got to know your children and know what they can take, like
- 26:15you said earlier, but also I think.
- 26:17There's just certain shit they probably shouldn't see before a
- 26:20certain age, right? Like, I I wouldn't let my kid
- 26:23play GTA. Like, not yet.
- 26:25Couple, you know, a handful more years here, like, yeah, you're
- 26:29you're going into a high school. You can probably handle GTAI.
- 26:33Think you'll be OK? I remember sneaking and playing
- 26:36GTA when I was young. Like, it was definitely a thing
- 26:39that was cool back in the day, man.
- 26:41Oh yeah, but I it it it's a weird it.
- 26:44It's very. I won't say that's like an easy
- 26:47thing. That is not an easy thing by any
- 26:49means. I mean there was we went to
- 26:52somebody's house and the the kids were hanging out with with
- 26:57these people's older son. He was a little bit older than
- 27:01than my oldest and he let him play Mortal Kombat.
- 27:05It's like, oh shit. Okay.
- 27:11Yeah, I would prefer they didn't at this age.
- 27:15And this was even a couple years ago like this was.
- 27:18I was one of those things that, you know now I think my oldest
- 27:22could take it. Probably okay, but I still would
- 27:25prefer you not like how much MK. I think it was 10.
- 27:30So the one with like the fucking X-ray and all that.
- 27:32Yeah, yeah, grabbing hearts and getting people in the nuts and
- 27:36they pop. And so when he came out and he's
- 27:39like, yeah, we've been playing Mortal Kombat, I'm like, oh.
- 27:43Fuck. And I, my wife just kind of sat
- 27:46there like nothing registered. I don't know if she knew exactly
- 27:49what it was, but she also came from, yeah, she came from a home
- 27:52that, like she was able to pretty much do whatever she
- 27:55wanted. So we had like very different,
- 27:57like almost polar opposites, but at the same time like I'm trying
- 28:02to be more relaxed because I also remember going over to a
- 28:06public school coming from a very private school.
- 28:09And having culture shock. So at the same time, like I'd be
- 28:14ignorant to believe that my child has not seen this shit or
- 28:17heard about the shit from kids at school because.
- 28:20Say I've. I've heard of seven-year olds
- 28:22that were playing Mortal Kombat and eight-year olds and stuff
- 28:24like that. Like, you don't want to know
- 28:26what little kids are actually talking about.
- 28:28They know what they let on, dude.
- 28:30I I The things I have heard that have come, yeah.
- 28:33The things that I have heard a kid say in a dugout because he
- 28:36thought a a adult was not listening is fucking wild, dude.
- 28:40It's crazy what those kids will say, man.
- 28:43Wild. The shit I was saying back in
- 28:44the day was fucking wild. Yeah, if you believe your kid is
- 28:47completely ignorant like. Any of these things, if you're
- 28:50just wrong, like I just there's other children in a school and
- 28:56they talk and not everyone has the same restrictions that your
- 29:00kid does. Like, it's wild.
- 29:03I was going to ask you, man, like, how do you as a parent
- 29:07tackle that? Because like when you're in that
- 29:11situation you don't want to. I mean, inside you're like,
- 29:14fuck, man, goddamn it. But outside it's not one of
- 29:16those things where it's like you don't in, because that was like
- 29:21my dad's biggest thing as well. The oddly enough he's like, I
- 29:25don't want you to ever be in a situation where your friends are
- 29:29able to do something and you're not.
- 29:31And that's not out of like spoiling or anything like that.
- 29:34But he's like, if your friends are enjoying something, I'm not
- 29:37going to keep you from enjoying it with them type thing.
- 29:39But you also need to know that there are boundaries to this,
- 29:43right? Like, we were playing GTA.
- 29:47I mean, Jules and Luke were playing it when they were like 6
- 29:49and six and eight, you know what I mean?
- 29:52Because my dad was like, yeah, you can do this in this
- 29:54household, but you cannot tell your friends you're playing this
- 29:57fucking game now. I mean, in that situation,
- 29:59they're playing Mortal Kombat. Did you as a parent have to like
- 30:03kind of like, pull your oldest aside and your kids aside and be
- 30:06like, boys? Listen up here.
- 30:08They have a crate toast coming to God, you know I mean.
- 30:11Because you kind of look like crate toast that beard, bro.
- 30:14Yeah. Yeah.
- 30:16No, I I didn't really. It was more of one of those
- 30:20things like. Open the floor for conversation
- 30:24type of thing. Like do you need to talk about
- 30:27like what the hell you just saw. But honestly they were just
- 30:30stoked about playing a fighting game.
- 30:31Like they give a fuck. The visceral like everything or
- 30:35the visceral going on, like didn't give a shit completely on
- 30:39face. But also like I I know how my
- 30:41kids are, right? Like one of them lives in his
- 30:43own like fantasyland 99% of the time.
- 30:46So he may not have even paid any attention to any of it.
- 30:49And then the oldest is, I mean. We we tried to raise fish at one
- 30:55point in time and they continually died because we
- 30:58apparently are just really bad at fish.
- 31:00And that kid was like, completely OK when the fish
- 31:04died. I'm like, yeah, flush it
- 31:06completely. Yeah, he's like, yeah, you can I
- 31:09flush it. And you're like, OK, so I know
- 31:13how they are, right? Like, I I know that they aren't
- 31:15really easily fazed by things like that.
- 31:17And I figured they would be OK. As you know, that knee jerk
- 31:21reaction was definitely like, I don't really care that, like, we
- 31:25aren't going to play this at home and I'm not going to tell
- 31:29you at this point. Like, I'm not going to tell you
- 31:31you can't play it because you've already seen it.
- 31:33But we aren't going to make a habit out of this, at least not
- 31:37yet. One of those get your feeling
- 31:40now because when we get home, you're back to Fortnite, you
- 31:42know what I mean? Yeah, that's a bad thing.
- 31:44It's not. It's.
- 31:45Not sheltering. In my opinion, that is just
- 31:47sending boundaries, which is, it's something I'm going to
- 31:50learn how to. It's something I'm going to have
- 31:51to learn to do. You know what I mean?
- 31:53Like it's not something you can. Teach like it is 100% something
- 31:58you have to figure out on the fly.
- 31:59And that's that's where it's at, right?
- 32:02Because like for me, like I want to have.
- 32:05I obviously have to see how Landon grows and adapts and the
- 32:10way video games change, right? Like, that's another thing.
- 32:13Like games, the things that we thought were graphic and
- 32:17outrageous back in the day are are far different nowadays, in a
- 32:22good way and a bad way, right? There's certain things where I
- 32:24think a lot of games like have matured, like Grand Theft Auto
- 32:27from three to five. It's almost like watching a
- 32:31teenager going to an adult from three to five, you know what I'm
- 32:35saying? So like the thing it's it's just
- 32:39really knowing I think to me how to approach situation when it's
- 32:44time and how to set my boundaries because I like I
- 32:48don't think I'm going to necessarily allow my son to play
- 32:55how I was playing back in the day where it was just play what
- 32:58you want to play. If you have questions, figure it
- 33:01out like for what you just saw, you know what I mean?
- 33:05Like I can remember my first time playing manhunt and
- 33:09grabbing a a Shard of glass then stabbing some dude in the neck.
- 33:13I mean fuck, when we bought it the guy wore my mom's.
- 33:15He was like, this is like the most violent title out on the
- 33:17market right now. Are you cool with like buying
- 33:20this firm? She went, I don't care.
- 33:22And then I got it and I've already seen I was probably 12.
- 33:26I already seen a fucked on the violence because I grew up
- 33:29watching it. You know living in Detroit area
- 33:32and all that stuff like you see it on TV every day.
- 33:34Nothing. It didn't faze me right.
- 33:36But I can remember certain aspects going, that's fucked up
- 33:39and I would like show my friends the game and then I would get in
- 33:42trouble, you know what I'm saying?
- 33:43But like, so setting those boundaries, I think that is the
- 33:46the most important thing. Because again, I'm, I'm,
- 33:48Landon's not going to be playing GTA6.
- 33:51He'll be, he'll be fucking five when that game comes out.
- 33:53You're not, you're not picking that shit up.
- 33:55That's if he's not ten. Yeah, we'll see.
- 33:59When we'll see, we'll fucking see.
- 34:02Fuck. But like that.
- 34:04That's that was my question to you, though.
- 34:06You know what I mean? Like, because you've been in the
- 34:08parenting game longer than I have, so I guess this is just me
- 34:11getting Brody on a podcast to ask him for parenting advice.
- 34:15To video games now. But you know what I mean.
- 34:18I I think every. Situation is different, I think.
- 34:21I don't think there's a right answer.
- 34:23I don't think there's a wrong answer.
- 34:24If you want to let your kid play fucking Gears of War at 8 years
- 34:27old, more power to you. But also I I don't.
- 34:31I don't agree with that. For my children, right?
- 34:33But I. I personally think it's it's a
- 34:37case by case situation like and I I really think that you know I
- 34:43would probably start them out on something a little little little
- 34:47easier right? I I had a lot of restrictions on
- 34:49my kids as far as. Like playing online and actually
- 34:53being in a lobby and being able to that is to people something
- 34:56sketchy. To me that is that is a.
- 34:58Sketchy one we I eventually, and I will probably get shit for
- 35:03this too, and I don't really give a fuck, but I took a lot of
- 35:07those restrictions away. They don't really have any
- 35:10restrictions at this point. And that was intentional, right?
- 35:15All of their See what they do? Yeah, all of their.
- 35:17Accounts are linked to my e-mail.
- 35:19They can't buy anything. They can't do anything without
- 35:22me confirming it. The only thing they can do is
- 35:25hop into lobbies and even then they don't know they can do with
- 35:30that. I unrestricted their account and
- 35:34didn't tell them just to see what they did because for the
- 35:37longest time they were restricted and I kind of told
- 35:39them what they can and cannot do and and we just, you know,
- 35:42occasionally pop our head in to see what's going on.
- 35:45Hey, who are you talking to? They tell us who they're talking
- 35:48to. Shit like that, right?
- 35:49And they're always talking to friends.
- 35:50I know all of. I know all of the friends
- 35:52they're talking to. They're usually usually pretty
- 35:55good. We have not had a single issue
- 35:57thus far. We also, like, gave them
- 35:59instructions on like, you never fucking tell anybody where you
- 36:02live, You never tell anybody your real name, like all of
- 36:05these things. Like you don't tell birth dates.
- 36:07You don't give any actual information.
- 36:10As far as the people online are concerned, you are your username
- 36:14and that is fucking it. And so like, it's just and you
- 36:20know that that could be wrong. Again, like I said, I'm not
- 36:22saying I'm right for doing that. I'm not doing that.
- 36:24I it is what it is. But that was the decision that
- 36:28we made, mainly me because my wife has predominantly left that
- 36:33kind of space up to me. Well, you know it all, but
- 36:36right? And and so you know it's.
- 36:40It's tough. It that was a hard call.
- 36:42Like, I genuinely was concerned about doing that.
- 36:47But I did it because they were they they weren't even able to
- 36:50play. Ea's really fucking stupid, by
- 36:52the way. You have to you have to have a
- 36:56like actual adult account to play Madden online and you can't
- 37:00even talk to each other. Like, it doesn't even have a
- 37:03lobby as far as I know. It is genuinely just playing a
- 37:06football fucking game with another person online.
- 37:10And they couldn't do it. And that's.
- 37:13And yeah, Ea's really, really stupid about their kids
- 37:16accounts, so regardless anyway, but yeah, that, that that's kind
- 37:19of how we ended up, where we were at.
- 37:21It was also one of those things that, like, they were playing
- 37:23Fortnite, they're playing Roblox, they're playing shit
- 37:26like that, like for the most part, harmless things.
- 37:30And I just wasn't all that I, I I.
- 37:36Know that I know my kids. I know what they're gonna do.
- 37:39I know how they are. I know how they think.
- 37:41And or at least I think I do. Maybe I'm fucking wrong, right?
- 37:44But we'll we'll check back. I also in their teens, Yeah, I
- 37:50also thought. You know, I was so smart and had
- 37:51my parents fooled as a child and then realized I'm a goddamn
- 37:55idiot and they knew what to stop saying the whole whole time.
- 37:58So hey, what's the age? Old adage.
- 38:01Anything you're doing now? I did 10 times worse, yeah.
- 38:04That's what my father would tell me, you know, I mean in the in
- 38:07the accent though everything you do, you know in Romania and
- 38:12France, I do 10 times worse when your dad says that.
- 38:16I absolutely believe it too. I do too.
- 38:19I spit on somebody. No, I stab you.
- 38:22Should I blow up? And I'm like, what the fuck are
- 38:25we talking about, Dad? You know, I mean shit like that,
- 38:28but. Like the online thing, as
- 38:31always. Because, I mean, I remember
- 38:33being on Xbox Live for sure, you know what I mean?
- 38:37I mean, if I'm being honest, that's the first time I ever
- 38:40heard racial slurs. Oh yeah.
- 38:42Lobbies, COD lobbies, like all of that shit is vile.
- 38:46Absolutely Fucking's the vile. First time I ever heard those
- 38:51words and I remember repeating them as a kid.
- 38:53And then my dad was like, what the fuck?
- 38:56Where did you hear that? I'm like the game.
- 38:58And he was like dude, like he was the voice where he's going.
- 39:02No man, I'm like, I didn't know what that word is.
- 39:05He goes, I should have told you about those words, but I you
- 39:08don't ever hear them. You know what I mean?
- 39:10Like cuz I never had heard any of those words until I, which
- 39:14hasn't helped my point that video games aren't bad, but
- 39:17like, it's keeping people at that point.
- 39:19It's people at that point. So yeah, that's something I'm
- 39:21gonna tackle eventually, but which I?
- 39:24Thought all of that chilled out for a little while.
- 39:25Like I I played the most. It's for God and.
- 39:29Boy is it back in full swing. Holy shit.
- 39:32It's like stepping through a time machine.
- 39:35Like all of that is back 100%. And you know the people on the
- 39:40other side are white as fucking white bread too.
- 39:43Oh my God, shut your stupid goofy ass up.
- 39:47I can tell you're a goddamn teenager like you are an idiot.
- 39:50Shut up. I also like the kids.
- 39:53The teenage white kids are like, I'm going to IP track you and
- 39:57it's like, no for it. But then you meet the kid with
- 40:00the actual hacked console, he's like, are you in this area right
- 40:03now? And I'm like, holy shit, Xbox
- 40:06off super quick. Sideshow on this.
- 40:10Like just because you said that we were playing one night and
- 40:14one of my buddies was actively in the military and the other
- 40:18guy that I was playing with was doing contracts for the military
- 40:22building structures and things. This kid started like throwing
- 40:26out some of that bullshit. I'm going to hack your IP yada
- 40:29yada yada and or find your IP. They had to report him because
- 40:35they are obligated as being on base.
- 40:39They had to report this fucking kid because he he got in there.
- 40:44He actually he he actually knew what he was doing and was able
- 40:47to get in and see he's like hey, is this you?
- 40:50And both of those guys go well. Shit.
- 40:53So don't be fucking stupid. Kids.
- 40:57Don't do that, because that's bad.
- 40:59You don't know who's on the other side of that.
- 41:01I P you were trying to get a hold of a military case.
- 41:05I imagine he got his fucking aspect real bad over that one,
- 41:09yeah. Hopefully he was underage.
- 41:11So maybe it was just like a very coming to Jesus moment, you
- 41:16know? I mean, meanwhile, my
- 41:17brotherinlaw was the whole reason we fucking got into that.
- 41:19Because he's also a he's younger, but he's old enough to
- 41:23know better. But he also likes antagonizing
- 41:26people. So he antagonized the whole
- 41:27thing and then sounds like someone else I know.
- 41:30Not me. I don't use racial slurs or
- 41:32anything like that. I just really like people on
- 41:34online. Yeah, no, this wasn't a racial
- 41:36slur thing. He was just talking mad shit.
- 41:38And so yeah, next thing you know, we're like, oh fuck, we
- 41:41have to now file this with the US government, dude, that's so
- 41:47that. That kid sucks.
- 41:49You suck, kid. If you're listening and you're a
- 41:51fan of ours, thanks, but you suck.
- 41:54So for me. Growing up, and I think my mom
- 41:58knew this. Like growing up in the
- 42:01household, I grew up, and we're not going to dive into that
- 42:03here. This is an OBO.
- 42:04This isn't any show we're doing for that, but a lot of my
- 42:08distressors were playing games. Like the games I've talked
- 42:13about, right? Like, absolutely.
- 42:14And I did dive into fucked up games as a teenager.
- 42:18I and I was, you know, the way I was.
- 42:20I dove into fucked up shit. Like I did play the Super
- 42:23Calumite RPG game. Yeah, you were 100% the edgiest
- 42:26person that I never met at that time.
- 42:28Yeah, exactly. I sucked.
- 42:29And I did play JFK Reloaded and shit like that, but like those
- 42:36those games didn't help me at all.
- 42:39But games like Doom 3 and Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto,
- 42:44where I I mean, fuck dude, there's been times when when I
- 42:46was younger and I would just be upset.
- 42:48This is going to sound fucking weird.
- 42:50Possibly. If anyone else listening has
- 42:52done this, let me know where I just had the radio on in GTA
- 42:55while driving around and I would just drive around, yeah, not run
- 42:59people over. I would stop at fucking lights,
- 43:02listening to the songs on the radio and I was like, huh, I
- 43:05feel a lot better, all right? Now I'm going to go destroy the
- 43:07world, but like. I feel like a lot of the violent
- 43:11games as well, like your dooms, your call of duties, your
- 43:16Wolfenstein's, all of that can be therapeutic in a way for
- 43:20certain children who are in an environment or you know, just
- 43:24are just angry in general. It could be a good outlet, but
- 43:28it's just I feel like it also that is also on the parent to
- 43:31explain like yes, here it is right here in your face, but
- 43:35that's in there, you know what I mean?
- 43:37Yeah, I feel like it could be a good tool.
- 43:40Yeah, to the right child. I think there's a certain level
- 43:42of, like, not necessarily maturity, but a little bit of
- 43:46maturity and a little bit of teaching.
- 43:48Like you said, like, hey, this kind of shit is fine while
- 43:52you're playing a game, you know? But get it out here, right?
- 43:55And there's I mean there's been studies on metal music and metal
- 44:01music is actually calming to a a a pretty large portion of
- 44:06people. And I was the same way, right
- 44:08when I was pissed off I went and listened to heavy shit and I
- 44:12felt better and and I don't think this is any different,
- 44:15right. Like some people would be like,
- 44:17Oh well that's teaching them to take their their anger out in a
- 44:20violent way. And it's like, no, it's not.
- 44:22It's teaching them that if they're pissed off, maybe go
- 44:25play some, do, go play some doom, kill some fucking demons
- 44:28and it's over, right? Like that is where you take it
- 44:31out at. And teaching kids how to have an
- 44:34outlet for anger or whatever it may be Like I remember having a
- 44:37punching bag as a kid cuz I was an angry little shithead and I
- 44:41had a punching bag and I went and beat the fuck out of a
- 44:43punching bag. But guess what?
- 44:44I never did. I never punched the fuck out of
- 44:46somebody else, right? Like having an outlet to go and
- 44:50take that anger out or take that frustration out is a good thing
- 44:54that is. Otherwise they're going to do it
- 44:56somewhere else. Eventually.
- 44:57That has to come out and the best place it can come out is in
- 45:00a game, right? Like it harms no one.
- 45:03The game is solely designed around that violence.
- 45:06Let it happen. Like it.
- 45:08And that's not for every kid, right?
- 45:09Because there are some kids or some situations where they
- 45:13aren't going to know the difference.
- 45:14They aren't going to be able to differentiate and they're going
- 45:17to assume right? And but at that point there's
- 45:21other things, there's other factors, there's other issues,
- 45:24right? And so I like to to assume that
- 45:28they make people violent is kind of outrageous.
- 45:31I I think it actually in 99% of cases has the exact opposite
- 45:36effect. I mean a kid goes into an online
- 45:38lobby and talks some shit and says some racial slurs.
- 45:40Like I bet he's not doing that in real life.
- 45:43He's probably just doing it there.
- 45:45Is that OK? Yeah.
- 45:46Yeah. Is that OK?
- 45:47Absolutely not. But at the same time, I would
- 45:51not. The racial slurs, those are
- 45:53never OK. But I would rather him talk shit
- 45:56in a game playing fucking Call of Duty or Madden or whatever it
- 46:00may be. Then I would have him go out
- 46:03into the world and do that and get punched in the fucking.
- 46:06And yeah, have somebody try to, you know, push his nose through
- 46:09the back of his skull. Like, yeah, no, this is a okay
- 46:13place to do it. I hate keyboard warriors.
- 46:15But at the same time, like, people need an outlet of some,
- 46:19some shape or form. And you know, especially
- 46:22children, like, they don't know how to regulate their emotions.
- 46:25They don't know how to do that. They have to have some sort of
- 46:28an outlet. So why not be a video game?
- 46:31What's wrong with that? It's not harming anyone in the
- 46:33long run. I mean, again, if they're doing
- 46:36racial slurs, like fucking doing racial slurs and doing the
- 46:41racial slurs, like, yeah, if if they're saying racial slurs,
- 46:46like, you've got to get that shit right and then but at the
- 46:49same time you got to hit your kid.
- 46:50With a belt. I'm kidding.
- 46:52Well, maybe not. Maybe not dropping the end bomb.
- 46:57Hit him with a belt, I don't know.
- 46:59That might. That might be an acceptance.
- 47:02You got to do something about that, I think, right now.
- 47:05Is 45 minutes is probably the best time to say we are not
- 47:09therapists, we are not licensed therapists, we are not
- 47:13psychiatrists, we are not doctors and we are not
- 47:16scientists? So we I don't even claim to be
- 47:19smart. No, we're just.
- 47:21Drinking we're drinking beer and whiskey we're I just.
- 47:24I honestly thought this would be an interesting conversation to
- 47:26have because I don't hear a lot of a lot of the podcasts
- 47:31including ours is always the fun side or like let's shit on this
- 47:34fucking team right. Not like you know what I mean
- 47:37like let's this game is this but this is a conversation I've
- 47:41always wanted to have with people because it is something.
- 47:44Sorry, that I. Winthrisk.
- 47:47Get it, you know, Hey, like because I mean, you know, I I
- 47:51did get expelled from school when I was 13 years old.
- 47:54I had issues going on and I, you know, I was a troubled youth and
- 47:59they are all like, well, it's the video games and comic books.
- 48:01So I'm like, no, it's not the video games and comic books.
- 48:05This is how I escape you people causing me the problems I'm
- 48:09having. So the worlds I'm investing
- 48:12myself in, whether it be comics, music or video games.
- 48:15Is why I don't act the way I want to at that point in time.
- 48:19Because I had some pretty nasty thoughts when I was a kid, You
- 48:22know, a teenager. Yeah.
- 48:24After a lot of shit happening, I had some nasty thoughts.
- 48:25I'd play video game and they'd go away.
- 48:28I'd fucking play video game for a couple hours, go outside and
- 48:30be like, hey, what's up, Ed? You know what I mean?
- 48:32So I felt great after that. But yeah, we are not, we are not
- 48:36therapists. We are not doctors.
- 48:37We are none of that. We're just two dudes drinking
- 48:40and having an interesting conversation.
- 48:42But steel worker that plays D&D and talks about video games like
- 48:48I am not qualified for shit. But here we are, right?
- 48:52Like someone asked me the other. Day it was Ethan and he goes,
- 48:57hey Nick, do you know like how a blah blah blah plane actually
- 49:01works? And I went, hey Ethan, I'm a
- 49:04fucking delivery driver for M&K truck centers.
- 49:07No, I don't know how that fucking works, bro, he went.
- 49:11Valid point. And Logan, dude.
- 49:14Logan let out this fucking gnarly cough and just started
- 49:17laughing. I was like Yep, Logan's gonna
- 49:19die. Yeah God damn it.
- 49:22But to wrap the episode up, I did wanna ask you though, did
- 49:26anything change in the way you games or perceived video games
- 49:30or really tackled your hobbies cuz you are also in the gunplug.
- 49:33You're in a D&D, you're into collecting and you're into video
- 49:35games. So when your boys were.
- 49:37Born did a lot of that change for you.
- 49:39Did anything perspective wise change and did your habits with
- 49:43your hobbies. Hobbits.
- 49:45I almost said hobbits. Great.
- 49:46My hobbits. Yeah, as The Hobbit.
- 49:48Is talking to my 11:00 and 8:00 year old Hobbit?
- 49:53No. Yeah, absolutely.
- 49:57My mind's kind of a weird situation.
- 49:59I mean, if you did the math at the beginning of this episode, I
- 50:02had kids very young, so early on I worked a lot.
- 50:07I stopped playing games for probably a couple years.
- 50:12And if any of you have like, been around some of the episodes
- 50:15where some of this may have come up that, yeah, you, you've heard
- 50:17it before. But regardless, I stopped
- 50:19playing games for a long time. And when I finally did get back
- 50:22into games, I mean, I typically had a baby sitting on my lap
- 50:25while it was finally, you know, got 10, It's to play a game or
- 50:28whatever because he fell asleep. So yeah, definitely in the early
- 50:33phases, like my hobbies, my wants, my, my aspirations to
- 50:38some extent went to the wayside because it's like I have a small
- 50:42human that relies on me. I have a a wife, we are young,
- 50:45like we got shit going on. That being said, as I got older,
- 50:49I finally started getting back into video games, started
- 50:52playing a little bit more, but I have kind of always been the
- 50:56type of person that feels who's guilty about playing video games
- 51:00instead of spending time with my family, quite frankly.
- 51:03Yeah. So a lot of times I typically
- 51:07don't play until late at night. I'll do some 1010 Thirty, yeah.
- 51:11Yeah. And so a lot of times, like once
- 51:14my kids are in bed, once my wife goes to bed, that's when I will
- 51:17usually play something. Right.
- 51:19Until 2:00 in the morning. Yeah, way too late usually.
- 51:23But yeah, my, my kids go to bed. They're, they're typically
- 51:27supposed to be in bed around 8830.
- 51:30Football is kind of throwing a wrench on that.
- 51:31But. And then after that, I'll
- 51:33usually stay up, watch something with the wife and then I'll hop
- 51:35on and hang out with you guys. Right.
- 51:38But yeah, you know, there there's also the, the that's why
- 51:41I love handhelds. That's why I love the steam
- 51:43deck. That's why I love the Switch,
- 51:44because I can sit there and still technically be present and
- 51:49and, you know, involved in conversation or watching
- 51:52something alongside them, but also still doing something I
- 51:55enjoy. So honestly, I hardly ever take
- 51:58my handhelds anywhere. They're mainly for around my
- 52:01house. Like I'll sit there and I'll
- 52:03play Switch, like sitting on the couch watching a show with my
- 52:06wife, or we play Mario Kart together and stuff like that.
- 52:12Like we try to, we try to. Whereas my, my parents weren't
- 52:16really involved in video games in any way, shape or form.
- 52:19Like I I try to be an obviously I I enjoy video games, so I'm
- 52:22all for it. But you know, we play Mario
- 52:24Party, we play Mario Kart, I play.
- 52:27I used to play a shit load of Fortnight with the kids while
- 52:29they were still really into it. Like, I I can't play Roblox.
- 52:31Fuck that. Sorry.
- 52:33That's where Reading Ground. For fucking bullshit anyways.
- 52:36But even then, like a lot of times, you know, if Amber needs
- 52:40a nap one day or whatever, I'll come down and I'll hang out with
- 52:43with the kids. And we might not even be playing
- 52:46the same game. But I'm playing something right
- 52:48here. They're directly next to me
- 52:49playing on the Xbox and PlayStation or whatever it may
- 52:52be, right? So yeah, my hobbies, you know,
- 52:55how I handled hobbies changed drastically from when I was in
- 52:58high school. Like I when I was in high school
- 53:00and had no responsibilities, no family, no kids.
- 53:02I would come home. I would sit, you know, after
- 53:05practice or whatever. I'd sit down.
- 53:07I'd play video games and wouldn't stop until God knows
- 53:11when. And then you drop dead.
- 53:12Almost. Yeah, yeah, pretty much.
- 53:13And Wake up the next morning like nothing ever happened, and
- 53:16go to school, do the same thing again.
- 53:18But yeah, it's like it has to change.
- 53:21Like I I think to a certain point to keep a healthy
- 53:24relationship with both your children and your wife or spouse
- 53:27or whatever it may be. I think you have to give some of
- 53:31that up and some regard. That doesn't mean you have to
- 53:33give it up entirely. I have a lot of friends that are
- 53:35like, I don't play video games anymore and like, why?
- 53:38Like, why? The fuck like you gotta.
- 53:40I hate that. But you also have to figure that
- 53:43out with your wife or your spouse, right?
- 53:45You have to figure out that balance and like, hey, I need
- 53:48some time to myself as well. And that's not something that's
- 53:51easy. That's not something that's a
- 53:52single conversation. It took fucking years for that
- 53:54to happen. And and I mean, I'm coming up on
- 53:58my 10 year wedding anniversary like 8.
- 54:01It takes time. It takes a lot of you have to
- 54:05actually have that conversation and figure out what that looks
- 54:08like. It's not easy, not easy at all.
- 54:11But at the same time, like you are allowed to have your
- 54:13hobbies. They are allowed to have their
- 54:16hobbies and you go from there. And I feel like I sound like an
- 54:20old man. Like we are old.
- 54:23Yeah. And to some extent for sure, but
- 54:26yeah. I I think you have to change
- 54:28your habits. You got to figure other things
- 54:30out. But at the same time, like, she
- 54:31has the things that she loves and I respect that and that's
- 54:34she respects my hobbies, right? Like I buy a bunch of games.
- 54:39I you know rebuilt my PC. I bought an Xbox.
- 54:43I bought a PlayStation. Like she doesn't didn't really
- 54:46bat an eye right and and so having that mutual respect and
- 54:50finding a way to enjoy both like with through a switch or through
- 54:54a Steam deck or something like that is is a great way.
- 54:58And, you know, I know not everybody can do that, but
- 55:01definitely make sure that you set that side to time or that
- 55:04time aside so you still have enjoyment with certain hobbies,
- 55:10you know? And I think that is one of the
- 55:13most important things you can do.
- 55:14Because if you don't have a hobby or anything you enjoy,
- 55:16like what? Where do you get any enjoyment
- 55:19in your life? And you're just going to be
- 55:20miserable and you're you're going to end up showing that in
- 55:23the rest of your life. You're going to show it through
- 55:25work, You're going to show it in your marriage, you're going to
- 55:27show it in parenting. Like that kind of shit is still
- 55:30important regardless. So I I know that was like a
- 55:34weird, like roundabout and very long, but that's where I was.
- 55:39Did that feel good to say? Out loud, though, It's stuff you
- 55:43definitely. It's like I said, I've had that
- 55:46conversation with my wife a million times of of figuring all
- 55:50of that out and that. But yeah, no, you you have to
- 55:53have those things. And I I see my friends that
- 55:56don't have any hobbies anymore and they're fucking miserable,
- 56:00like, quite frankly. And it's it's like you you got
- 56:03to have that thing that you enjoy and and you have to have
- 56:07that mutual respect for your spouse and that's that's just
- 56:09where it is. Like my wife loves watching TV.
- 56:12I don't particularly care to watch TV.
- 56:14So a lot of times I'm sitting there playing Steam Deck or
- 56:16Switch or something because it I'm still there.
- 56:19I'm still watching TV with her, but I'm also still doing
- 56:22something I enjoy. And also that's how I get
- 56:25through a lot of like other games, right?
- 56:27Like my my Jrpgs that are million and a half fucking
- 56:31hours. Like it's easy to do that while
- 56:33you're just hanging out. But yeah, did.
- 56:36Amber freak out when you guys were close to the guy from The
- 56:38Bachelor the other day? Yeah.
- 56:41Oh fuck yeah, absolutely. I saw her Instagram.
- 56:43Post. I was like Amber.
- 56:44I almost messed her. Like, be cool, dude, be cool.
- 56:47Yeah, no, they were not cool at all.
- 56:50They no, they were, they were, they were fine.
- 56:52They didn't, like, harass the poor guy or anything, but they
- 56:55were definitely like, I think that's him.
- 56:57Oh my God. Oh my God.
- 56:58Like freaking out. Why did they get selfie?
- 57:01I don't know. I'm going to dog on her for
- 57:03that. Amber's kind of the same way I
- 57:05am in that regard. Like I don't want to bug him,
- 57:07just cuz they were on a show or something.
- 57:09Like fuck him. I was sitting next to, you know,
- 57:12like a Craig Mabbitt from Escape the Fate one time at a bar and I
- 57:17like didn't even acknowledge his existence.
- 57:20Well, he's so short. You.
- 57:21Might miss him anyways. Well, yeah.
- 57:23But it was funny because I was with Jeff and Jeff, he was
- 57:26wearing a Warframe shirt, he was a Warframe jacket.
- 57:31And it was like this. Or Craig the No, the Craig
- 57:34Mabbett and and Random. Yeah.
- 57:38And Jeff's. Like, I fucking worked on that
- 57:40game and I was like, I've listened to Bless the Fall and
- 57:44escaped the fate for forever. I mean, not escaped the fate
- 57:47anymore basically once Radke left.
- 57:49So it's not like I was a huge fan anyway.
- 57:53But yeah, it's it's kind of a one of those weird things of
- 57:57like, yeah, no, I just, they're just people too.
- 58:00Like they're just trying to live their fucking lives.
- 58:02I don't want to bug everybody. Sound the.
- 58:03Same way I bug everybody. I do.
- 58:07I'm really cool about it. I'll go up there.
- 58:08You want to? I met JPEG Mafia.
- 58:11Oh nice. At a bar he was playing at and
- 58:15he was just chilling there. I was like, hello, Peggy.
- 58:18And he went, I can't say what he said to me, but he he said, you
- 58:21know, but. I was like, you want to drink?
- 58:23He goes. Nah, not for the show bro.
- 58:25He's like, thank good looking though.
- 58:27And I I got a photo, the photos on my Instagram, but be cool
- 58:31man. Anyways, everybody be cool.
- 58:33So my last question. Though is how excited are you
- 58:36because you've already transferred a lot of your
- 58:39hobbies on to your kids, man. Like they both game, right?
- 58:41Like, so how cool, Like how stoked are you to like really
- 58:45like watch them grow into gaming?
- 58:47Because gaming nowadays is, it's always been a culture.
- 58:52And we will end here. It's already an hour, but we're
- 58:54we're going to end on this question.
- 58:55It's always been a culture, gamers, gaming, whatever.
- 58:59However you want to phrase it, there is a culture behind it,
- 59:02for better or for better or for fucking worse.
- 59:05But like how stoked are you to, like, keep them involved if they
- 59:10want to stay involved? Because to me, what I'm seeing
- 59:14in the trend, I'm not saying they're going to do this.
- 59:17The trend is esports in major sports.
- 59:20It it just is Counter Strike, all those games, Overwatch, what
- 59:26have you, Fortnite, are you are you excited to see the future of
- 59:31how they game and evolve and how video games evolve with them and
- 59:35see if they stay in the hobby that you love the most?
- 59:38I mean, you at your core haven't had and are part of a video game
- 59:42community and podcasting community, right?
- 59:45So it's obviously a huge part of your life.
- 59:48Are you excited to see if they adapt and keep that with them as
- 59:51well the way you did? If not more, if not less, Yeah,
- 59:58it it will be interesting to see, you know, as gaming grows.
- 1:00:03You know, we have something like Baldur's Gate right now that is
- 1:00:06just this fucking standout, crazy, insane game that people
- 1:00:11are using their. Foot, yeah.
- 1:00:13Absolutely. And so to be super interesting
- 1:00:16to see how shit evolves you also.
- 1:00:18So have, you know, VR that's just so desperately trying to
- 1:00:21take off, but it just can't quite get there.
- 1:00:24But you know it it's been kind of like my oldest.
- 1:00:29He wanted a PC really bad, so I kind of pieced together some of
- 1:00:34my old parts and he ended up getting a PC because.
- 1:00:39He watched a bunch of Fortnite streamers that played on PC and
- 1:00:42he's like, oh, this is the ticket, right?
- 1:00:44Like this is that's how you actually play?
- 1:00:45Yeah, well. He found out it's not something
- 1:00:50that is super easy to pick up and it takes time and he doesn't
- 1:00:54have the patience for that. So he plays on controller still
- 1:00:56most of the time. But they also have kind of
- 1:00:58gotten to the point where they don't really play much Fortnite.
- 1:01:01So it's interesting seeing that that phase switch for them where
- 1:01:05both of them are really into Madden right now, which around
- 1:01:09that same age I was as well because I played football.
- 1:01:12I fucking loved it, right? I enjoyed Madden at that point
- 1:01:15in my in my life. And so seeing them get into that
- 1:01:19is like where I'm really pessimistic about Madden as a
- 1:01:23whole now because I've been around up for so long and it
- 1:01:25hasn't really changed and their EA's EA, but they enjoy it.
- 1:01:32So at the end of the day, I'm like, yeah, absolutely, let's go
- 1:01:35ahead, let's play Madden, whatever it may be.
- 1:01:37But yeah, it's interesting seeing those phases, seeing the
- 1:01:41things that they get into. My my oldest has recently been
- 1:01:46on like. A Dragon Ball kick he he's been
- 1:01:50getting, he's been getting an allowance so he can buy a few
- 1:01:55things here and there it and has to do chores around the house
- 1:01:58and and one of the things that he bought was Dragon Ball
- 1:02:01Kakarot. And so he played through that
- 1:02:04and he's like, it was too short. I'm like Jesus Christ.
- 1:02:09There's games, buddy. We can't keep doing this and so.
- 1:02:12I've gotten to the point where a lot of times they were enjoying
- 1:02:15games that I was buying too, like depending on what it was
- 1:02:18and or like I would buy, you know, whatever it is or they'd
- 1:02:21get it for their birthday or Christmas or something, right?
- 1:02:24So now they have this allowance so they have to save up.
- 1:02:26I help him find deals on the games, whatever it may be, but
- 1:02:29regardless, he wanted to buy the next he would.
- 1:02:31He's like, Oh, well, I heard that Dragon Ball Xenoverse has
- 1:02:35way more content, so now he's been playing Dragon Ball.
- 1:02:38Xenoverse and like cool shit like that.
- 1:02:40You know my youngest, he plays a ton of like Roblox, a ton of
- 1:02:47Madden, those are. And then he had like some some
- 1:02:50game called like Floppy Life. It's almost like a human fall
- 1:02:53flat type game where it's just like fucking wonky and shit.
- 1:02:57But regardless like they they have their own tastes and it's
- 1:03:01interesting seeing those evolve from from each other where they
- 1:03:05used to like the same shit. Now they're starting to get into
- 1:03:07different. Games.
- 1:03:08Different experiences. Meanwhile, I'm going in like a
- 1:03:12completely different direction as well, and so it's fascinating
- 1:03:16to see. I've also like I don't even know
- 1:03:19how many people even knew this, but my kids completely begged me
- 1:03:24to start a YouTube channel for them.
- 1:03:26Yeah. So, so I did years ago and we
- 1:03:29we, we did it for a while and eventually I had to stop because
- 1:03:33I just didn't have the time to do the recordings and edit and
- 1:03:37everything else. And and it broke my heart to do
- 1:03:39that because they enjoyed it so much.
- 1:03:41But it it just couldn't happen, right.
- 1:03:44Yeah. So yeah, they they are 100%
- 1:03:47invested in streaming, right. Like I didn't, I didn't push
- 1:03:50them to that. I wasn't trying to monetize my
- 1:03:52children. Before you ask that, start
- 1:03:54losing your mind. They begged me for it for a
- 1:03:58while and I finally gave in and did it because I also know
- 1:04:01there's a stigma around that, right?
- 1:04:03Like, everybody's trying to make money off there.
- 1:04:04No, that's not what I'm trying to do.
- 1:04:06I don't give a shit. Like, they just wanted to upload
- 1:04:08it. They thought it was cool to be
- 1:04:09like, hey, I created this and show their friends and that's
- 1:04:11awesome. Like, that's really cool.
- 1:04:14And and that's something that I may eventually like, teach my
- 1:04:17oldest hey, this is how you edit videos and you can do this now
- 1:04:21and let him do it and to some regard.
- 1:04:24But yeah, you gotta be you gotta be careful, especially as a kid.
- 1:04:28Like I can't let him. I have to be careful about what
- 1:04:31we post, right. And stuff like that and be
- 1:04:33careful about creepy people and shit like that.
- 1:04:35But it's interesting, right? Like the the the whole gaming
- 1:04:38sphere has changed so much. Especially since we were kids
- 1:04:43and and to see it grow is awesome.
- 1:04:46There's bad parts about it too, don't get me wrong, but I think
- 1:04:49overall they're in potentially the most, not not not most
- 1:04:55interesting time, but probably the time that has the most
- 1:04:59potential. Because we are to a point where
- 1:05:02video games are they, they look life like like that.
- 1:05:06You know, when you look at The Last of Us, like, that game is
- 1:05:09gorgeous. Is so, so damn pretty.
- 1:05:14Meanwhile, we grew up in the time where video games were
- 1:05:17popping off, right? Like you saw your NES, your
- 1:05:19S&ES, the N64, the Playstations. Like we've got to see some of
- 1:05:25the quickest and most impressive innovation in video games.
- 1:05:29And now they're to the point where they're that that
- 1:05:32innovation is slowing down because there's only so much
- 1:05:34further you can go feasibly for, you know, in in the next 10
- 1:05:39years. But ultimately they they get to,
- 1:05:42they get to experience potentially some of the best
- 1:05:44fucking games ever created. I mean, just this year alone,
- 1:05:47like, and I know not everybody's a huge fan, but Tears of the
- 1:05:52Kingdom, like. That game is incredible.
- 1:05:55Baldur's Gate. I mean just this this year has
- 1:05:59been so jam packed with great games.
- 1:06:01I mean, Jedi Fallen or Jedi Survivor was overall a pretty
- 1:06:06solid game, but it is entirely overshadowed by everything else
- 1:06:10that has come out this year. Pickman 4 is, you know,
- 1:06:12Pickman's finally getting the attention that it deserves.
- 1:06:15Which it It's a fucking great franchise, but it just never
- 1:06:18really got that attention. And.
- 1:06:20Like we have Armored Core. There's just Final Fantasy 16.
- 1:06:24Like, I I can't even think of all of the games right now.
- 1:06:26Like this game or this year has been such an incredible year for
- 1:06:30gaming. And I you know the Yeah,
- 1:06:34Ragnarok. Late last year, like there's
- 1:06:37just so much crazy stuff and you know, I, I, I'm excited.
- 1:06:41The kids, you know, they I've let them play through Spiderman.
- 1:06:44I've let them play through Guardians of the Galaxy, all
- 1:06:47those things that. I mean, Spiderman's an
- 1:06:49incredible game. My my youngest has beat that
- 1:06:53game multiple times. Tell him to play Spiderman Two
- 1:06:56on the PlayStation. Then we could talk.
- 1:06:58Yeah, yeah, right. But we'll talk then.
- 1:07:00Kids, again, I think I probably talked in circles a little bit
- 1:07:03there. It's just I'm excited to see how
- 1:07:06they how their tastes change. And that's even something
- 1:07:09outside of gaming that I'm excited to see.
- 1:07:11Like I I asked my my kids every so often, Like, what kind of
- 1:07:15music do you like just to see? Because my wife listens to a lot
- 1:07:18of hips. Hip hop stuff like rap, hip hop,
- 1:07:21some pop shit. Meanwhile, I'm on the other
- 1:07:23except she didn't want to listen to fucking, you know, Y&W Melly
- 1:07:27in the car, but that's fine. Thanks, Amber.
- 1:07:29Meanwhile, I listen to like everything from punk to metal to
- 1:07:34and we listen to this stuff with them in the car because why not
- 1:07:39expose them to all Expose like you have a broad range of things
- 1:07:44to pick from, Go wild and so yeah.
- 1:07:48Just seeing them grow is such a a unique experience that you get
- 1:07:52to go through as a parent. That is really fascinating and I
- 1:07:57enjoy watching them grow. Like this year my kids started,
- 1:08:00my oldest started middle school, which is fucking weird.
- 1:08:04It's. So weird.
- 1:08:05But he he had that moment where like for the longest time he
- 1:08:09only cared about wearing. He wore athletic shorts and
- 1:08:12whatever shirt we got him and he didn't care.
- 1:08:13And now it's like. No, I want, I want Jordan's.
- 1:08:17I want, I want Jordan's socks. I want like, you know some
- 1:08:21fucking cool tshirts. And it's just it's crazy
- 1:08:24watching that that lights just between 5th and 6th grade.
- 1:08:28All of a sudden he's like, hey, hang on a second.
- 1:08:31I want to actually dress like I care about myself.
- 1:08:36I'm, I'm here waiting for my kid to hit a cognitive state where
- 1:08:39he's like, yeah, I am a human, yeah.
- 1:08:44About about five. I think it's when that really
- 1:08:47starts to kick in. But no, I'm waiting.
- 1:08:50Kids are cool, man, and watching them grow is cool and at the end
- 1:08:53of the day you just hope you don't fuck them up too bad.
- 1:08:55Like we have always joked, like first couple therapies.
- 1:08:58That first like year of therapy is probably on us.
- 1:09:01I think we probably deserve that.
- 1:09:04After that you're on your own. But I got the first year.
- 1:09:06How much I owe you? Fuck man, man.
- 1:09:10Well, thank you for hopping on the show.
- 1:09:12Thanks for talking about this. That said, this is a
- 1:09:13conversation I've wanted to have, wanted to have for a
- 1:09:16while, and I couldn't think of anyone else better to talk about
- 1:09:19with and to force to drink some whiskey tonight.
- 1:09:22Yeah, hopefully. I didn't hog too much of the
- 1:09:25show here. I feel like it's gonna be.
- 1:09:26A whole lot of my voice waves on here, but no, it was it was
- 1:09:30equal. I would say it was good on both
- 1:09:32ends. You don't have to lie to me.
- 1:09:35Now shut up. We're gonna wrap it up there.
- 1:09:37We we this. We haven't gone for an hour in a
- 1:09:39long time. I'm stoked.
- 1:09:40We do. It's always us.
- 1:09:41It's always. It's always you and I.
- 1:09:43It's always you and I. We we always fucking drag it on
- 1:09:45in a good way, I would say, for this episode especially.
- 1:09:47But yeah, dude, thanks for hopping on.
- 1:09:49And can you please, for the last time, tell everybody about your
- 1:09:55show in a quick segment? Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got some
- 1:09:59stoked. Go.
- 1:10:01Check out. Role for deception it is a
- 1:10:04currently it is only a post apocalyptic somewhat home
- 1:10:09actually entirely home brewed world and it is my first time D
- 1:10:14Ming. It's not like I don't know the
- 1:10:17the the subject but definitely it's a different experience.
- 1:10:22We have six people playing and it is wild.
- 1:10:25It is fun. It is a good time.
- 1:10:29We we had guys in the first episode named.
- 1:10:33Dick head and ass wipe and shit like that.
- 1:10:36Like it's not super serious. It's fun.
- 1:10:38We're having a good time. But yeah, you should definitely
- 1:10:42check it out. Awesome.
- 1:10:43See, we're still kids too, guys. Yeah, Dick head and ass wipe.
- 1:10:46We're still kids. Oh yeah.
- 1:10:47Yeah. Fuck child.
- 1:10:48That's fine. Check Bernie's fucking D&D show
- 1:10:51out of the spawn camp network. Hop into the discord.
- 1:10:55Listen to it live if you want. Watch it cuz they played in
- 1:10:58Tailspire so it's fully interactive.
- 1:11:00You'll see a fully interactive game happen and just enjoy
- 1:11:04yourself. Check out WASD and beyond.
- 1:11:06Every Friday we skipped last week, we had some shit going on.
- 1:11:09I really need to nail this episode down.
- 1:11:12Check out the sponsors again. Final Boss and Doc Longy.
- 1:11:15And until next week, guys, take it easy.

- 1:11:22That'd be good. Be safe.
- 1:11:23Yeah. Be safe.
- 1:11:24Take these guys. This is the WASD.
