- 0:00Speaker 1: Football and four powered by the Inside of the Birds podcasts.
- 0:03Speaker 1: It is brought to you by the Fanatic Sportsbook at
- 0:04Speaker 1: Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City. The Eagles have fired
- 0:08Speaker 1: Kevin Bittullo. What is next for the Birds free agents?
- 0:12Speaker 1: Where do they go from here? Let's get into it.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Adam Kaplin's here from the Inside of the Birds podcast, which
- 0:18Speaker 1: you can get on all podcasting platforms just search Inside
- 0:21Speaker 1: the Birds. Adam Kaplan in the house as the breaking
- 0:23Speaker 1: news just moments ago, the Eagles have fired Kevin Bittulo.
- 0:27Speaker 1: He will now I don't know if he has a
- 0:29Speaker 1: role in the organization or what they're gonna do with
- 0:31Speaker 1: him here, but they'll have their fifth offensive coordinator in
- 0:34Speaker 1: five years and not surprising news, I guess, Adam no.
- 0:40Speaker 2: I mean it would have been a shock or miracle
- 0:42Speaker 2: if Bittulo I was gonna keep it out. By the way,
- 0:45Speaker 2: if you read the statement, actually this is actually kind
- 0:47Speaker 2: of funny. Let's just give you an inside look at
- 0:50Speaker 2: how things are done. So I actually was on their
- 0:52Speaker 2: website at three twenty nine and I saw their announcement
- 0:56Speaker 2: and that saw Nicks. It was very clear that he
- 0:59Speaker 2: was fired. He's could be with the team that if
- 1:01Speaker 2: you just read the release that they put out or
- 1:03Speaker 2: the statement they put on the website, he's out. It
- 1:06Speaker 2: doesn't seem like he's got a job with the organization.
- 1:08Speaker 2: So but anyway, Mike, and then like a minute a
- 1:14Speaker 2: half later it got leaked to the national media. Thought
- 1:17Speaker 2: it was comical. That's the way it goes. Sometimes it's
- 1:19Speaker 2: very funny. But overall, Mike, when you look at it,
- 1:24Speaker 2: and then you said this very well, Mike, when you
- 1:27Speaker 2: work for Nick Siriane, no matter what Nick says, because
- 1:30Speaker 2: he actually you don't you probably won't remember this first,
- 1:33Speaker 2: he basically said, when when he announced that he was
- 1:36Speaker 2: looking for a new coordinator and that guy would be
- 1:38Speaker 2: able to run his own show, he back way off
- 1:39Speaker 2: of that, however, he said it then this is two
- 1:42Speaker 2: years ago, and would happened with if Kellen Moore was
- 1:46Speaker 2: I know for a fact from everyone I spoke with
- 1:48Speaker 2: a great of the tape, it's the same scheme with
- 1:51Speaker 2: occasionally different concepts every now and then hurts it said
- 1:56Speaker 2: it was ninety percent different. It wasn't ninety percent different.
- 2:00Speaker 2: It was very much the same. But Kellen Moore added
- 2:04Speaker 2: stuff that he had not seen before. That that's all.
- 2:07Speaker 1: That's all so real quick on Kevin obviously he's out. Yeah,
- 2:13Speaker 1: what kind of coordinator is plausible here? I mean, do
- 2:19Speaker 1: you get a guy, as a high profile guy, say, look,
- 2:22Speaker 1: look at this offense. I'd love to get my hands
- 2:24Speaker 1: on this. Or do they not want to work with
- 2:26Speaker 1: Nick in this offense? Does Jeffery get involved in say Nick,
- 2:29Speaker 1: your offense is done? I mean, I don't feel like
- 2:32Speaker 1: we've heard the end of what's next.
- 2:35Speaker 2: Well, I know in twenty twenty that rich Gangarella was
- 2:39Speaker 2: more or less forced on Doug Peterson. Remember the innovation
- 2:43Speaker 2: of Doug bristled at that he didn't like it, but
- 2:45Speaker 2: because Doug didn't really handle his coaching staff like he
- 2:48Speaker 2: didn't hire most of the coaches Gan Gorell because they
- 2:51Speaker 2: wanted to add the West Coast element and some the
- 2:53Speaker 2: Shanahan principles. Dis Gangarella came from the Shanahan tree, and
- 2:57Speaker 2: that that backfired mightily if it was a train wreck.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Jeffrey does get involved. He wants innovation. This one will
- 3:04Speaker 2: be interesting because let me just explain why Mike McDaniel
- 3:07Speaker 2: makes no sense. Hearts is not a timing and rhythm
- 3:11Speaker 2: type of quarterback. He's just not that he's shown a
- 3:13Speaker 2: little bit better in the second half. Really since the
- 3:16Speaker 2: Charger game, Mike, he's served more of a willingness to
- 3:20Speaker 2: at least throw the ball inside where than they ever has.
- 3:22Speaker 2: But that's not the kind of thory is overall. And
- 3:24Speaker 2: he's never been a timing thrower, that's anticipation thrower, So
- 3:27Speaker 2: that would make no sense anyone from the Shanahan tree. Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 2: he never say never, Mike, and it's what I've learned.
- 3:33Speaker 2: We've used this phrase for now nine years with the Eagles,
- 3:36Speaker 2: who never say never, But it makes zero sense from
- 3:40Speaker 2: a compatibility standpoint.
- 3:43Speaker 1: Well, you got Kingsbury, Stefanski, that level of guy. Do
- 3:47Speaker 1: you see any opportunity there? Do you think those guys
- 3:49Speaker 1: are pie in the sky?
- 3:51Speaker 2: Well, Stefanski wants to be a head.
- 3:52Speaker 1: Coach again, so I figure he will get a head
- 3:54Speaker 1: coaching job. He's the one that I think definitively gets
- 3:56Speaker 1: a head coaching job. I'm not sure about kings Barrier. McDaniel.
- 4:00Speaker 2: Well, here's the problem. Cliff Kimsberry would have been the OC.
- 4:03Speaker 2: We reported this at the time, but Cliff wanted to
- 4:06Speaker 2: fire a lot of their offensive coaches because he wanted
- 4:09Speaker 2: to bring his own staff. Cliffan is brilliant, very smart. Now,
- 4:14Speaker 2: he would fit in very well with Hurts from his
- 4:17Speaker 2: because he runs a lot of spread concepts. Hurts his
- 4:20Speaker 2: dw of that. But the other name that to watch.
- 4:24Speaker 2: We'll see if he's on there. Jeff brought this name up.
- 4:27Speaker 2: He just fits dialistically. That's Todd Monkin. Jeff brought this
- 4:31Speaker 2: up to me yesterday And what I thought about it.
- 4:34Speaker 2: This thing I love about Monkin is he runs everything.
- 4:37Speaker 2: He runs everything he could possibly want. Paul personnel eleven
- 4:42Speaker 2: ten thirteen personnel, which is three tight ends. He would
- 4:46Speaker 2: be a great fit. So we'll see if Eagles are interested.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Now I know this. I'm not saying they even make
- 4:52Speaker 2: a call to Greg Roman's agent, but I know someone
- 4:55Speaker 2: in their building is always like Greg Roman. I know
- 4:57Speaker 2: that for a fact. It doesn't mean they're we're gonna
- 5:00Speaker 2: be interested. I'm just telling you that they've kind of
- 5:02Speaker 2: like Greg Roman over the years. Well, you know, he
- 5:04Speaker 2: just got fired as as you mentioned, and he's now
- 5:07Speaker 2: been fired. This is crazy. He's been fired by both
- 5:09Speaker 2: fire Ball brothers.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Yes, uh, he was in Baltimore now and of course
- 5:13Speaker 1: San Diego or La excuse me. With the Chargers Greg
- 5:16Speaker 1: Roman from Ventnor Holy Spirit, he has been let go
- 5:18Speaker 1: by the Chargers. The Eagles now have a opening here
- 5:22Speaker 1: as well. And then I guess that would be the question,
- 5:25Speaker 1: like does Nick get to keep this little Cocamedi offense
- 5:28Speaker 1: that is his and or do they say, look, Nick,
- 5:32Speaker 1: we gotta evolve and move on from this offense. He
- 5:34Speaker 1: got us a super Bowl congradual. Yes you got me, Adam,
- 5:40Speaker 1: you got me.
- 5:41Speaker 2: Muck you there, Yes, I hear you can hear you
- 5:43Speaker 2: now you're there.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Yes, I'm here, I got I could hear you all right,
- 5:45Speaker 1: I hear yeah.
- 5:46Speaker 2: So this one is could be interesting. This one's gonna
- 5:49Speaker 2: be interesting Jeffrey because remember they has to have his
- 5:53Speaker 2: year end meeting with Jeffrey, and this is where I
- 5:57Speaker 2: was told some of the names on his list got
- 5:59Speaker 2: a raised for the meeting. So I think he's gonna
- 6:03Speaker 2: have to give it a long thought. This is a
- 6:04Speaker 2: little bit more complicated because you got the Hurts factor.
- 6:08Speaker 2: What's gonna work with Jalen. It's it's very difficult to
- 6:10Speaker 2: be honest with you, Mike, to to get somebody someone
- 6:14Speaker 2: who's gonna fit here.
- 6:15Speaker 1: I agree. Let me ask you this, Adam. I know,
- 6:20Speaker 1: like everybody wants to blame a tool and he got fired.
- 6:23Speaker 1: But how much blame do you put on him? Is
- 6:28Speaker 1: he the reason this offense struggled so much?
- 6:32Speaker 2: The scheme, it's the scheme from Sirianni, but Kevin had
- 6:37Speaker 2: a hand in it because he had been a pasketing
- 6:38Speaker 2: cooridator before this. Like the last play to their last
- 6:42Speaker 2: play of the season, the fourth and eleven was so
- 6:45Speaker 2: poorly designed, I can't tell. I spoke to three coaches
- 6:48Speaker 2: now for around the league, and they all said the
- 6:51Speaker 2: same thing. You're running four verts first quarters coverage really
- 6:56Speaker 2: on the fourth and eleven with no outlet, like with
- 6:59Speaker 2: with no hitch routes, you get the ball within fifteen
- 7:03Speaker 2: yards like this is just not that's bad. That's bad, Mike,
- 7:07Speaker 2: that's it. That's inexcusable. I don't know if Jeffery would
- 7:10Speaker 2: understand that, But that's bad. That's all Nick, because it's his,
- 7:14Speaker 2: it's his scheme. Mike.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Well, then my my next peel of the onion to
- 7:18Speaker 1: the question would be, then I've got my lotta. I've
- 7:21Speaker 1: got Dickerson, Jurgens, they're all signed. I got Steen, I've
- 7:25Speaker 1: got Lane I don't know what his deal is. I
- 7:28Speaker 1: don't know. Am I replacing anybody on the offensive line?
- 7:33Speaker 1: Am I replaced? Basically? Am I replacing anybody in the offense?
- 7:36Speaker 2: Like?
- 7:36Speaker 1: Are we just basically bringing back the same exact offense?
- 7:40Speaker 1: Maybe not Goddard, who knows his future, but essentially everybody.
- 7:45Speaker 1: How is this offense different?
- 7:46Speaker 2: Then? Well, Steen is the guy that have to take
- 7:49Speaker 2: a look at because they're they're locked in everywhere else
- 7:52Speaker 2: now lan Lan Steve as he always is, yep, with
- 8:00Speaker 2: an HJ. Brown, Mike, he can't get out of it
- 8:02Speaker 2: by trading there a pit in the trade would be significant,
- 8:07Speaker 2: but you can use the post to on designation half
- 8:09Speaker 2: at over two years. It would be painful. But that's
- 8:13Speaker 2: the one to watch as we come to mid March
- 8:15Speaker 2: when when freedency opens.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Mic.
- 8:16Speaker 2: Yeah, because it's I've telling our Patroon members all season.
- 8:21Speaker 2: I'd be very surprised if AJ Brown's back. I just
- 8:24Speaker 2: would be There's there's a lot going on there with AJ,
- 8:28Speaker 2: A lot of it. Most of it's out, not all.
- 8:30Speaker 2: If it is, it's just and and by the way,
- 8:32Speaker 2: they have a lot of draft picks they could replace him.
- 8:34Speaker 2: It's he's a very good football player turns twenty nine.
- 8:38Speaker 2: They've been able to dodge the injury bullet, unlike the
- 8:40Speaker 2: Titans code with him. It's pretty interesting.
- 8:42Speaker 1: We're talking about Capitol Football four and obviously this news
- 8:45Speaker 1: just came down that Patula has been fired, and now
- 8:48Speaker 1: we're kind of looking at where they go from here.
- 8:49Speaker 1: They do have a lot of free agents on this
- 8:51Speaker 1: offensive side of the ball. None of them are really
- 8:54Speaker 1: all that, you know, glamorous, other than maybe Goddard. But
- 8:57Speaker 1: you look at Prior Tote, Fred Johnson. I mean, their
- 9:00Speaker 1: offensive line was a problem this year, and some of
- 9:03Speaker 1: it was the depth problem. I mean Toth came in
- 9:05Speaker 1: played okay later on, but he was a problem earlier.
- 9:08Speaker 1: Matt Pryor, they tried to play him, he was terrible.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Fred Johnson they traded for. They got to at least
- 9:13Speaker 1: look to get some more depth on the offensive line.
- 9:15Speaker 1: And some of these guys back, Kaylen, Grantson, Grant Calcata,
- 9:20Speaker 1: all three tight ends are free agents. Dotson as a
- 9:23Speaker 1: third receiver. They got to get a guy that can
- 9:25Speaker 1: run at wide receiver. Dylan made no impact at all.
- 9:29Speaker 2: You know, it's funny with Petullo's offense, Mike and slash Siriani.
- 9:34Speaker 2: They never really used the third receiver, no so, which
- 9:39Speaker 2: is ridiculous for his mouth. Eleven personnel thats they play.
- 9:41Speaker 2: They used they and we know because the top three
- 9:44Speaker 2: guys gotta get the football. But the third receiver is
- 9:46Speaker 2: basically a blocker or just a guy. They would rarely
- 9:50Speaker 2: use they when they go eleven, they have to use somebody.
- 9:53Speaker 2: But Fred Johnson, you never want to say, like, okay,
- 9:56Speaker 2: it's absolutely manager. They resigned him, but he did a
- 9:58Speaker 2: very good job. Mike. He's a quality backup, would play
- 10:01Speaker 2: right and left tackle, not just left, not just right.
- 10:04Speaker 2: That that that uh that that was actually a good
- 10:07Speaker 2: re acquisition by Howie. But you know Howie, unfortunately Mike,
- 10:12Speaker 2: he did not have a great offseason a free agency.
- 10:14Speaker 2: They were mostly misses, to be honest. That's why he
- 10:17Speaker 2: made it a slow of trades. And you know, look
- 10:20Speaker 2: that the big the what's interesting about their defensive line
- 10:24Speaker 2: is all not that it's gonna happen, but you can
- 10:27Speaker 2: make a case for their front three of Joe Mo's
- 10:29Speaker 2: up for extension harder and and I was Jordan Davis. Again,
- 10:35Speaker 2: I'm not saying they're all going to get done. Some
- 10:37Speaker 2: of them will get done, and then you got the
- 10:40Speaker 2: Jayleen Field. Now the Jalen Phillips contracts up. My feeling
- 10:44Speaker 2: has been that they'll try to resign him. It won't
- 10:46Speaker 2: be easy. It's hard to figure out what his contract
- 10:49Speaker 2: would look like. Mike, because of his injury history, he
- 10:51Speaker 2: didn't have his pressure rate was really good, but it's
- 10:54Speaker 2: he didn't have a lot of sacks, So we'll see
- 10:57Speaker 2: how that goes down. But they'd have a lot of
- 10:59Speaker 2: work to do with their roster. Mike. There's their past
- 11:02Speaker 2: rush completely. We didn't even talk about the Niner game.
- 11:05Speaker 2: Their their pass rush was really disappointing against the Niners
- 11:08Speaker 2: state the least.
- 11:09Speaker 1: All right, you just mentioned Jayle Phillis. Let's quickly run
- 11:12Speaker 1: through the defensive free agents. Phillips, bk Obo, O Jeli,
- 11:18Speaker 1: all those guys were brought in here. Graham will probably retire.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I would imagine uh and Ojalai not big impacts to
- 11:25Speaker 1: guys who were veterans last year that they just kind
- 11:27Speaker 1: of took flyers on. The big one is Nakobe Dean
- 11:30Speaker 1: and then a Dori Jackson and Reblanket Ship. Those guys
- 11:32Speaker 1: all were starters. Jackson obviously had an up and down year.
- 11:36Speaker 1: But Dean and Blanketship, those are some big names.
- 11:39Speaker 2: Yeah, and blanket Ship, Mike, he's not sign extension. What
- 11:44Speaker 2: we have to watch is when we get to the offseason,
- 11:48Speaker 2: right where do they line up Cooper dejen Is he
- 11:52Speaker 2: going to be a nickel? If if Vick Fandrio thinks
- 11:55Speaker 2: you should still play nickel, then they got to make
- 12:00Speaker 2: Blankenship or priority. If Vic thinks he's a safety long term,
- 12:04Speaker 2: there's a realistic chance blanket Ship, despite his leadership and
- 12:07Speaker 2: he's kind of like the like the leader of their
- 12:11Speaker 2: secondary in terms of alignment and communication, they can let
- 12:16Speaker 2: him walk. Just a lot of it us to do
- 12:17Speaker 2: with Kop. I mean, I know most people are thinking
- 12:19Speaker 2: that way, but we've we've known this for a while.
- 12:21Speaker 2: That's part of why Blanketship has not signed an accession.
- 12:24Speaker 2: By the way, Blanketship also change agencies right before the
- 12:28Speaker 2: season started because he had not got an extension. So
- 12:32Speaker 2: that's one Mike to watch. Jalen Phillips Obviously, Joey Jackson's
- 12:36Speaker 2: not a priority. They need to draft his replacement. Yep,
- 12:39Speaker 2: he got he got, he got lit up a little bit,
- 12:42Speaker 2: uh in the in this Niner game. You know, we
- 12:44Speaker 2: should let people know that he actually did a good
- 12:47Speaker 2: job for a while, but he got beat a bit
- 12:49Speaker 2: a bit, and that's a problem.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Yep. Dean's gonna be interesting because obviously when he came back,
- 12:55Speaker 1: Johack Campbell basically was phased out of the defense. Yeah.
- 12:59Speaker 2: So lastly, Nakobe Dean, this one's difficult. But here's the thing.
- 13:06Speaker 2: They didn't. They didn't trade off for their first round
- 13:08Speaker 2: pick to sit. It doesn't happen. What happened here was
- 13:12Speaker 2: what happened in season was Nikobe came back. They knew
- 13:17Speaker 2: he looked great in rehabit, they didn't know until he
- 13:20Speaker 2: got on the field. They evaluated over three games, Dean
- 13:24Speaker 2: was clearly better from their from their practice tape and
- 13:27Speaker 2: game tape, and they made the right decision. It was
- 13:29Speaker 2: the right decision to bench Campbell for the most part.
- 13:32Speaker 2: But you can't do it for two years. It just
- 13:36Speaker 2: I'm not I'm not saying he won't be back, Dean.
- 13:39Speaker 2: It's gonna be tough to make it work because Eagles
- 13:42Speaker 2: have so much leverage here because they just hold Campbell
- 13:45Speaker 2: over his head. Yeah, and by the way, Nikobe also
- 13:47Speaker 2: change agent.
- 13:49Speaker 1: Well, we'll keep an eye on that one because the
- 13:50Speaker 1: defense with Dean Blanketship. Those guys were pretty key players
- 13:53Speaker 1: for this team in the second half. Jalen Philip they
- 13:55Speaker 1: traded for and Bradon Man, you got to bring him back.
- 13:57Speaker 1: That guy was crushing balls. He was a believable all right,
- 14:01Speaker 1: football four more on Friday with Adam the new offensive coordinator.
- 14:05Speaker 1: We'll see what the candidates look like later on in
- 14:07Speaker 1: the week, and then Nick still needs to talk this
- 14:09Speaker 1: week as how he does as well. We'll have that
- 14:11Speaker 1: for you here on Football for thanks man, all right,
- 14:15Speaker 1: Adam Caplin
