Latest / Birdland Territory / UNBELIEVABLE O's comeback to win the series. Trade deadline looms.
Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: Well, there have been some crazy days in Birdland in
- 0:09Speaker 1: twenty twenty six. Maybe this moves to the top of
- 0:13Speaker 1: the list. Trailing the Tigers seven to nothing today at
- 0:18Speaker 1: Comerica Park and facing Trek Scoubele two times Cy Young winner,
- 0:22Speaker 1: which means the Orioles, who lost fourteen to nothing last night,
- 0:25Speaker 1: were seven nothing down today looking like a third straight
- 0:29Speaker 1: series loss.
- 0:30Speaker 2: They rallied.
- 0:32Speaker 1: The Orioles beat the Tigers in twelve innings today, ten
- 0:36Speaker 1: to nine.
- 0:37Speaker 2: They actually went.
- 0:37Speaker 1: Eighteen straight innings in this series with no runs and
- 0:40Speaker 1: then scored a flurry up ten runs to come back
- 0:43Speaker 1: and win today. Welcome to Birdland Territory. The tone of
- 0:48Speaker 1: the show is a little different than it looked like
- 0:50Speaker 1: it might be a couple hours ago. And I don't
- 0:53Speaker 1: know if they saved the season, but I think they
- 0:55Speaker 1: at least saved.
- 0:57Speaker 2: All of Baltimore.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Saying you can't beat by now if you've lost three
- 1:01Speaker 1: straight series and you go three and six, which is
- 1:03Speaker 1: what they were facing until the comeback. What do you
- 1:07Speaker 1: guys make of a bizarre day?
- 1:10Speaker 3: Yeah, it was a wild game there, and I think
- 1:12Speaker 3: you're right, Steve. I think it did kind of save
- 1:14Speaker 3: all the You can't keep this team together now. They
- 1:17Speaker 3: just lost three in a row and it was not
- 1:19Speaker 3: looking pretty there. But those games as a player are
- 1:22Speaker 3: what it's all about. Like when you come from behind
- 1:24Speaker 3: like that against a two time in a row Cy.
- 1:27Speaker 4: Young Award winner and the bullpen.
- 1:28Speaker 3: They had their best arm, one of their best arms
- 1:30Speaker 3: out there, and you're able to come back to that
- 1:32Speaker 3: seven to nothing game. That is that's a happy flight
- 1:34Speaker 3: coming back from Detroit, and that's a huge series win
- 1:37Speaker 3: there when they really really needed it. And as a player,
- 1:40Speaker 3: that doesn't get any better than that.
- 1:43Speaker 5: That was just such a schizophrenic like series. Guys like
- 1:47Speaker 5: that was one of the more bizarre because go back
- 1:50Speaker 5: to Monday where Kyle Bradish on the mound, you feel good.
- 1:53Speaker 5: Bradish didn't have it, but you know what, the bullpen
- 1:55Speaker 5: picked them up and the offense. I thought that was
- 1:57Speaker 5: some of their best approaches that we've seen in quite
- 2:00Speaker 5: some time. They only struck out three times. It was awesome.
- 2:03Speaker 5: Then they followed that up with their worst game of
- 2:06Speaker 5: the season. It was the largest shutout loss that they've
- 2:09Speaker 5: suffered since two thousand and four. They didn't have a
- 2:12Speaker 5: runner in scoring position. That's how bad of a game
- 2:15Speaker 5: it was, and then you're trailing seven to nothing, you're thinking,
- 2:18Speaker 5: oh my gosh, the season's over, it's done, it's buried.
- 2:22Speaker 5: For them to dig deep, that was unbelievable. And you
- 2:26Speaker 5: can say a lot of things about this Foriols team
- 2:29Speaker 5: this year, and we know all of the flaws, but
- 2:32Speaker 5: they fight, they battled, they scratched, they claw and that
- 2:35Speaker 5: was their twenty fifth come from behind win and doing
- 2:39Speaker 5: it in you know, you take the two run lead
- 2:41Speaker 5: in the eleventh and then boom the first pitch, Rico
- 2:44Speaker 5: Garcia home run, Spencer Torkolsen another gut punch. But they
- 2:48Speaker 5: kept scratching and clawing, and that clubhouse they deserve a
- 2:53Speaker 5: ton of credit for not rolling over when they were
- 2:56Speaker 5: down seven to nothing against Schooble.
- 3:00Speaker 1: What was the Oriel's biggest comeback win since June thirtieth,
- 3:03Speaker 1: two thousand and nine. In that game at home, they
- 3:07Speaker 1: went to the bottom of the seventh trailing the Red
- 3:09Speaker 1: Sox ten to one. They scored five and the seventh
- 3:13Speaker 1: and five in the eighth and one, eleven to ten,
- 3:16Speaker 1: ten to one, down eleven ten win. Today it was
- 3:19Speaker 1: seven to nothing, down, ten to nine win. And so
- 3:23Speaker 1: this is the biggest comeback victory since June thirtieth, two
- 3:27Speaker 1: thousand and nine against the Boston Red Sox. Just crazy stuff.
- 3:31Speaker 1: I did not see this coming in any way. I
- 3:34Speaker 1: was getting my notes ready for a certain article to
- 3:37Speaker 1: write and then had to scrap that. And I'm sure
- 3:41Speaker 1: there were a lot of media guys and fans getting
- 3:43Speaker 1: there the angry comments ready that. Again, this doesn't save everything,
- 3:48Speaker 1: but my gosh, to beat this team today with Scuba
- 3:51Speaker 1: out there, it just I don't know what the win
- 3:54Speaker 1: probability was. We'll have to get to MLB Network to
- 3:58Speaker 1: tell us. It had to be really low. Yeah.
- 4:00Speaker 5: I saw Steve's seventh inning, and Sarah Langs does a
- 4:03Speaker 5: great job for MLB Network. Heading into the seventh they
- 4:09Speaker 5: they had a point seven percent chance of winning the
- 4:12Speaker 5: game and they ended up winning it. So it's it's
- 4:14Speaker 5: unbelievable point seven percent.
- 4:17Speaker 3: You know what, really I kept thinking about when I
- 4:19Speaker 3: see them come back like that, and you hear Coltonkwser's
- 4:21Speaker 3: comments after the game, is what we've been kind of
- 4:24Speaker 3: hearing from these guys. Every single guy has been talking
- 4:26Speaker 3: about this clubhouse and how they have each other's back,
- 4:29Speaker 3: and that win today really showed that these guys really have.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Each other's back.
- 4:32Speaker 3: They could have folded there very easily, down seven to nothing.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Terrek School's coming back out in the seventh and you're thinking,
- 4:38Speaker 3: what is this team going to do to come back?
- 4:40Speaker 3: How Okay, if they get it close, maybe that's a
- 4:42Speaker 3: moral victory, but moral victories aren't doing anything for the
- 4:44Speaker 3: Ools right now. But to come all the way back
- 4:46Speaker 3: and tie that game, and then to have the lead
- 4:48Speaker 3: and give it up in the eleventh and just still
- 4:50Speaker 3: come out on top, it goes to show a lot
- 4:52Speaker 3: of the character and really what these guys have been
- 4:54Speaker 3: talking about since April.
- 4:56Speaker 5: There's so many under the radar moments of this game,
- 5:00Speaker 5: and there's going to be a ton when you win
- 5:02Speaker 5: it in this type of fashion. But how much have
- 5:05Speaker 5: we talked during these episodes? Two out runs against the Orioles.
- 5:10Speaker 5: It's killed them. Well, they scored seven runs with two outs.
- 5:13Speaker 5: But I think one of the most underrated APT bets
- 5:16Speaker 5: in this game, so Leoti taveris he drove in the
- 5:19Speaker 5: first run of the game to make it seven to one.
- 5:22Speaker 5: Jeremiah Jackson had a twelve pitch at bat and drew
- 5:26Speaker 5: a walk. Jeremiah Jackson had five walks all year long,
- 5:31Speaker 5: and he drew a walk in a twelve pitch at
- 5:34Speaker 5: Bet and then it was the onslaught Jackson Holiday with
- 5:38Speaker 5: out two RBI hit. Taylor Ward drove in two more runs.
- 5:42Speaker 5: Then it's seven to five, and none of that would
- 5:44Speaker 5: have been possible if Jackson ended up striking out at
- 5:47Speaker 5: seven to one. You go into the eighth inning and
- 5:50Speaker 5: you're probably thinking that you're done. So I think the
- 5:53Speaker 5: Jeremiah Jackson at beat really, you know, it should not
- 5:57Speaker 5: go overlook.
- 6:00Speaker 1: And the Orioles scored in the sixth inning Monday, then
- 6:04Speaker 1: it didn't score in the final three innings. They didn't
- 6:06Speaker 1: score nine innings Tuesday, and they didn't score in six
- 6:09Speaker 1: innings today. That's no runs eighteen innings. There's so many
- 6:14Speaker 1: oddities from this series. We pointed out this series stat
- 6:17Speaker 1: that for eight of their last nine series they had
- 6:20Speaker 1: scored thirteen runs or less. I mean, the offense really
- 6:22Speaker 1: damning for the oriol offense, and in this series they
- 6:25Speaker 1: got eighteen in two games it didn't score and one
- 6:29Speaker 1: It's just bizarre. And I further, I'll add this, the
- 6:32Speaker 1: Oriols won a series where they're starting pitching, which has
- 6:35Speaker 1: been great had an ERA of ten forty three. They
- 6:40Speaker 1: gave up seventeen earned runs twenty runs over all overall
- 6:44Speaker 1: in fourteen and two thirds this series and still won it.
- 6:48Speaker 1: And again Scooba was starting and Yeah pitched Trevor Rodgers.
- 6:52Speaker 1: As it turned out, not by a huge margin because
- 6:54Speaker 1: some of those runs were charged in. It just was unlikely.
- 6:57Speaker 1: I don't know what it's going to mean, but I
- 6:59Speaker 1: think in the trade scope, it means they're still in
- 7:06Speaker 1: that murky in between area that it can't seem to get.
- 7:09Speaker 3: A a Yeah, And I feel like they've been in
- 7:11Speaker 3: this same exact territory for three or four weeks now.
- 7:15Speaker 3: It's just like you feel like they're out of it,
- 7:16Speaker 3: then they're back in, and now they're back.
- 7:17Speaker 4: I don't know. I don't know where they stand.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I mean, there was rumors on MLB trade rumors yesterday
- 7:21Speaker 3: of Cole and Kowser and Jackson Holliday being kind of
- 7:25Speaker 3: chopped around by the Orioles. So it's just I really
- 7:27Speaker 3: have no idea where this is going to go, and
- 7:29Speaker 3: it's gonna be really interesting to see how it all
- 7:30Speaker 3: plays out.
- 7:31Speaker 4: Honestly, Steve, I.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Have no idea. There's just so much smoke surrounding the
- 7:38Speaker 5: Orioles right now where I still John Morosi, right when
- 7:41Speaker 5: I was at the tail end of the show, coming
- 7:43Speaker 5: in near Cano is one of the most coveted setup
- 7:46Speaker 5: men on the trade market. So it's and you, Brad,
- 7:49Speaker 5: you brought up Jeff Passing, bringing up Kowser and Jackson, like,
- 7:53Speaker 5: I have no idea what to expect, but I'm really
- 7:57Speaker 5: excited to see what happens and then these next days
- 8:00Speaker 5: leading up to the trade deadline. But they could just
- 8:04Speaker 5: go so many different directions, and quite frankly, at this point,
- 8:07Speaker 5: I don't know if I'd be surprised.
- 8:11Speaker 2: It's bizarre. It's bizarre.
- 8:12Speaker 1: There's just no I think if you're michae Elias, you
- 8:15Speaker 1: must be talking with your staff and confused. There just
- 8:19Speaker 1: is no clear cut direction and anything they do could
- 8:23Speaker 1: turn out great or could totally be a bust. If
- 8:26Speaker 1: you give up future assets for two months of a
- 8:30Speaker 1: player that doesn't help you get in it, man, that's
- 8:33Speaker 1: gonna look bad. On the other hand, Tim and Brad,
- 8:36Speaker 1: excuse me, guys, excuse me microphone. There there was a
- 8:41Speaker 1: stat of Baseball America put out don't hit me any ground.
- 8:45Speaker 2: Balls, just to let you guys know. That's that's how rough.
- 8:48Speaker 1: There was a stat of Baseball America put out saying
- 8:51Speaker 1: something like less than ten percent of players traded at
- 8:54Speaker 1: the deadline have a certain number of war like most
- 8:57Speaker 1: of them don't pan out, yeah times trading prospects. I mean,
- 9:01Speaker 1: that's the way Dave Dombrowski fields in Philadelphia. He's never
- 9:04Speaker 1: met a prospect he wouldn't trade, Yeah a j preller.
- 9:09Speaker 4: Yeah, so true.
- 9:10Speaker 3: And it's just like, because you just don't know what
- 9:11Speaker 3: the future is gonna hold, and you you trade for
- 9:14Speaker 3: a guy that maybe just fits the team that he's
- 9:17Speaker 3: on and he's really comfortable there, and you change scenery.
- 9:20Speaker 3: Some guys it works, But I just feel like when
- 9:22Speaker 3: you get traded in that final two month window, it
- 9:27Speaker 3: just gets really difficult to perform at the level you're
- 9:29Speaker 3: accustomed to because everything gets flipped on its head and
- 9:32Speaker 3: you just don't know what direction it's going to go
- 9:34Speaker 3: from there and how you slot in on that team
- 9:36Speaker 3: and getting to know the guys, and it's just there's
- 9:38Speaker 3: a lot of stuff that kind of gets thrown your
- 9:40Speaker 3: way there and that that final two month window.
- 9:43Speaker 5: Yeah, Brad, you lived it. I can't imagine just from
- 9:47Speaker 5: a human aspect of it, where okay, using your point
- 9:51Speaker 5: Baltimore to Atlanta and brand new environment, brand new organization,
- 9:56Speaker 5: brand new teammates, like so much new, new, new new,
- 9:58Speaker 5: and you're just throwing into the mix in a team
- 10:01Speaker 5: that's in a pennant race, like your head's got to
- 10:04Speaker 5: be spinning.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely.
- 10:06Speaker 3: When I got traded over there, I was a good
- 10:08Speaker 3: situation because we had former Oriel pitching coaches who were
- 10:11Speaker 3: over there, and they basically sign me down and just like,
- 10:13Speaker 3: do what you do.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Forget about what happened in the first four.
- 10:15Speaker 3: Months, just do what you do, don't worry about what
- 10:18Speaker 3: they're expecting from you, go out there, pitch your game,
- 10:20Speaker 3: and everything will fall into place.
- 10:22Speaker 4: And it just helped a lot with that. But not
- 10:24Speaker 4: every situation is like that.
- 10:25Speaker 3: You're not going to get traded to a team that
- 10:27Speaker 3: literally had a pitching coach that I had for two
- 10:29Speaker 3: years in their front office helping me out and worked
- 10:32Speaker 3: with me throwing bullpens and this kind of stuff.
- 10:34Speaker 4: So you just never know what kind of situation you're
- 10:37Speaker 4: going to be sent to.

- 13:27Speaker 1: All right, Tim, thank you as well as we move
- 13:29Speaker 1: on here Berdland Territory. Couple topics to hit on as
- 13:32Speaker 1: the O's get that stunning win against the Tigers today
- 13:35Speaker 1: ten to nine in twelve innings. I was very surprised
- 13:41Speaker 1: Jackson Holliday didn't start today. I know it's a lefty.
- 13:43Speaker 1: I know it's Eric Scoogle six for eight in the
- 13:47Speaker 1: series five twenty eight ops since July eighth ops over
- 13:55Speaker 1: one thousand. I don't get it, guys, to me, if
- 13:59Speaker 1: he's your one one was, he's a guy who's a
- 14:01Speaker 1: big part of your future, and you believe he is.
- 14:05Speaker 1: This is the challenge you want for him, right? Are
- 14:07Speaker 1: we telling the young guys we got to keep you
- 14:10Speaker 1: away from the best pitcher in the league. Don't we
- 14:12Speaker 1: want him thinking I'm as hot as I've ever been.
- 14:15Speaker 1: I'm going to go get three hits off Scooball today.
- 14:19Speaker 4: Yeah, I agree with you, Steve.
- 14:20Speaker 3: I think we've kind of seen this trend all year long,
- 14:23Speaker 3: where lefties can't face lefties, rights can't face rightings, and
- 14:26Speaker 3: you are slotted as you can only as a left
- 14:28Speaker 3: you can only face rights, and as a writer you
- 14:30Speaker 3: can only face lefties.
- 14:31Speaker 4: But I agree with you.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Jackson Holliday has been one of the best hitters. And
- 14:34Speaker 3: it's not just the last seven games. Looking back at
- 14:36Speaker 3: his numbers over the last thirty, he's got a fifty
- 14:38Speaker 3: ops and to me, that's as high as anybody on
- 14:41Speaker 3: the team right now. And I just to me, like
- 14:43Speaker 3: you said, being the number one overall pick and all
- 14:46Speaker 3: the accolades that came with him coming through the minor leagues,
- 14:49Speaker 3: he's starting to come into his own as a major
- 14:51Speaker 3: league player. Yeah, the power is not there as much,
- 14:52Speaker 3: but that will come. I think being such a young player,
- 14:55Speaker 3: we kind of lose perspective on how many short like
- 14:59Speaker 3: he hasn't had many that's in the major leagues as
- 15:01Speaker 3: it is. So for me, it's he's got to be
- 15:02Speaker 3: out there on a daily basis right now. I don't
- 15:04Speaker 3: care if it's lefty, righty, whoever he's facing. I need
- 15:06Speaker 3: to have him in the lineup. And especially when it's
- 15:08Speaker 3: coming down to crunch time here with the trade deadline
- 15:10Speaker 3: coming up, and when you're right there for a chance
- 15:12Speaker 3: for a wildcard.
- 15:15Speaker 5: It just goes back to a conversation we've been having
- 15:18Speaker 5: so much guys, where having the the just the natural feel.
- 15:23Speaker 5: You had two hits in yesterday or excuse me, three
- 15:26Speaker 5: hits and yesterday's game Jackson Holiday had two of your
- 15:29Speaker 5: three ins. He was six fraight in the series. Like
- 15:32Speaker 5: you said, Steve, I just have a feel for it.
- 15:35Speaker 5: And you can go back to July eighth, because that's
- 15:38Speaker 5: the beginning of this really really hot stretch where he
- 15:41Speaker 5: is an on base percentage over five hundred, and he
- 15:45Speaker 5: had that four hit game against the Cubs. He was
- 15:47Speaker 5: four for four. Remember he wasn't in the starting lineup
- 15:50Speaker 5: the very next game. It just doesn't make much sense
- 15:53Speaker 5: to me. And Holiday, he's using the entire field, he
- 15:57Speaker 5: spraying the ball all over, but some one thing that
- 16:00Speaker 5: I'm most excited about in this now seventeen game stretch
- 16:05Speaker 5: Jackson Holiday. In his minor league career, he had an
- 16:07Speaker 5: elite strikeout to walk ratio in this stretch ten walks
- 16:14Speaker 5: to nine strikeouts, so more more walks than strikeouts in
- 16:19Speaker 5: this now seventeen game stretch. So that has me really
- 16:23Speaker 5: excited for Jackson.
- 16:26Speaker 1: He went two for three in this game and he
- 16:27Speaker 1: drove in three runs. He didn't get in the game
- 16:29Speaker 1: till the seventh inning. Eight for eleven this series. He's
- 16:32Speaker 1: now hitting two sixty for the year. And by the way,
- 16:35Speaker 1: his ops for the year is seven sixty seven MLB
- 16:40Speaker 1: averages what around seven point fifteen or something. That is
- 16:44Speaker 1: a higher OPS for this year than Adlie Richman and
- 16:48Speaker 1: Samuel Basio. He trails a couple people like Alonzo, but
- 16:53Speaker 1: he's ahead of Gunner, He's ahead of Adley, He's ahead
- 16:55Speaker 1: of Basio. He's ahead of most of them who have
- 16:58Speaker 1: played regularly for the Oriols this year. Taylor Ward as well.
- 17:01Speaker 1: This came out of nowhere. What a hot streak. We'll
- 17:03Speaker 1: see how it goes for this kid. But Tim, you're
- 17:06Speaker 1: right when he and Ben McDonald kept noting a swing
- 17:10Speaker 1: adjustment or change and maybe not as much loft.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Are you guys seeing that. I have a hard.
- 17:16Speaker 1: Time just with the naked eye viewing it without a
- 17:19Speaker 1: side by side, you know, from like a couple of
- 17:21Speaker 1: weeks ago or something.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Well, I think something that's important to point out with Jackson,
- 17:26Speaker 5: like he doesn't need to be a home run hitter.
- 17:29Speaker 5: He's put on a lot of muscle obviously for when
- 17:32Speaker 5: he got drafted at eighteen, but even just over the
- 17:35Speaker 5: past couple of years. He hit seventeen home runs last year.
- 17:39Speaker 5: If he's a twenty home run guy, even twenty five
- 17:42Speaker 5: in a great year, that's fine. Just get on base,
- 17:45Speaker 5: because he was elite getting on base used the whole field.
- 17:49Speaker 5: You know. I love the approach that we're seeing from
- 17:52Speaker 5: Jackson Holiday in this stretch.
- 17:54Speaker 3: Yeah, that's what That's what I see the most of
- 17:56Speaker 3: is that he's using the left side of the infield.
- 17:58Speaker 4: And when you look at the third base, yes, sure
- 18:00Speaker 4: to hit a ball down a line so far over.
- 18:03Speaker 3: So if you start hitting the ball more to the
- 18:06Speaker 3: left side of the field, you spread out the infielders
- 18:08Speaker 3: and now those balls that are be coming outs find
- 18:10Speaker 3: holes and he's on base and you don't need him
- 18:12Speaker 3: to hit the home runs. When you have Pete Alonzo, Taylor,
- 18:15Speaker 3: Ward Gunner, Henderson Adleye Basaio.
- 18:18Speaker 4: Just get on base.
- 18:19Speaker 3: The doubles are fine, and when you can hit guys
- 18:21Speaker 3: in that's what you're going to be paid to do.
- 18:23Speaker 3: RBIs are cool too. You don't have hit the ball
- 18:25Speaker 3: over the fence to get your own RBIs. You get
- 18:27Speaker 3: balls in the gap, you get base hits with the
- 18:29Speaker 3: guys on base and runners in scoring position. That's going
- 18:32Speaker 3: to pay pretty well too.
- 18:35Speaker 1: Two down notes from today. There were probably more than two,
- 18:38Speaker 1: but the defense was really bad. If they've lost this game,
- 18:41Speaker 1: we would be focusing on that. I don't know what
- 18:43Speaker 1: Peter Lionzo saw on the rundown. He just threw that
- 18:47Speaker 1: ball on the left field gunner a mistake. So there
- 18:50Speaker 1: were defensive miscues and another home run from Rico Garcia. Brad,
- 18:55Speaker 1: do you see anything going on can a pitcher getting one?
- 18:59Speaker 2: He's yeah something.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I've been watching him pitch obviously and paying a little
- 19:04Speaker 3: bit closer attention because of the home run balls. To me,
- 19:07Speaker 3: it just kind of seems he's not attacking with his
- 19:10Speaker 3: fastball as much.
- 19:11Speaker 4: He's trying to get ahead with his off speed.
- 19:13Speaker 3: His off speed's great, but I think what makes his
- 19:15Speaker 3: off speed elite, and when he's going through these really
- 19:17Speaker 3: good stretches is that he uses his fastball to get
- 19:20Speaker 3: to the off speed. His change up is great the lefties,
- 19:22Speaker 3: but if you're not showing your fastball in enough, they
- 19:25Speaker 3: can kind of stay out over that change up, and
- 19:27Speaker 3: if it's not down down, it's going to kind of
- 19:29Speaker 3: become a home run pitch. And I kind of found
- 19:31Speaker 3: myself getting into those slumps. I would always think, Okay,
- 19:34Speaker 3: just go to my change up, Go to my change up,
- 19:35Speaker 3: but you have to remember what makes your change up
- 19:37Speaker 3: so good is your fastball. And I think he's just
- 19:39Speaker 3: been kind of pitching backwards a little bit more as
- 19:42Speaker 3: opposed to just getting ahead with his fastball, which is
- 19:44Speaker 3: what we saw early on in the season, and then
- 19:46Speaker 3: he'd go to those off speed pitches, And to me,
- 19:48Speaker 3: I think it's just kind of getting a little bit cute,
- 19:49Speaker 3: trying to, like today that first pitch slider to the
- 19:51Speaker 3: Turkosen just to kind of get me overslider. In those
- 19:55Speaker 3: situations there, you have to kind of know the guys
- 19:57Speaker 3: swinging out of his shoes, and I think that's all
- 19:59Speaker 3: he kind of got caught at today. But I think
- 20:01Speaker 3: he's gonna be fine. We saw that the other night.
- 20:02Speaker 3: He got the save one, two, three and with two strikeouts.
- 20:05Speaker 3: But I think it's really just kind of don't be
- 20:07Speaker 3: afraid to use your fastball way more, Brad.
- 20:10Speaker 5: It's always brought up when any reliever goes through struggles
- 20:15Speaker 5: like Rico Garcia is, And look, he was historic to
- 20:18Speaker 5: start the season. I think it was twenty one appearances.
- 20:20Speaker 5: He gave up one or and run like that was
- 20:23Speaker 5: just a stupid stretch. Yeah, but Rico Garcia, you know,
- 20:26Speaker 5: he had three straight outings in which he allowed solo homers.
- 20:30Speaker 5: Then Albernaz put the faith in a Monday to get
- 20:34Speaker 5: the save, but then giving up another homer. Here, what
- 20:37Speaker 5: do you make when people say, okay, do you want
- 20:40Speaker 5: to try to get him in the low leverage situations?
- 20:43Speaker 5: Would that help get his confidence up? Did that ever
- 20:46Speaker 5: happen with you, Brad?
- 20:48Speaker 2: Like?
- 20:48Speaker 5: Is that overblown or is there something to that?
- 20:52Speaker 4: Yeah? I think it's I think it helps a little bit.
- 20:55Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, if he's one
- 20:56Speaker 3: of your elite relievers, put him in a low leverage
- 20:58Speaker 3: situation isn't going to help you when you get back
- 21:01Speaker 3: to that high leverage situation. So what when we were
- 21:04Speaker 3: pitching with Buck, Darren would kind of make a joke.
- 21:06Speaker 3: He'd call it the doghouse, like I had an instant
- 21:09Speaker 3: in Detroit now that we're they're in Detroit right now.
- 21:11Speaker 3: I gave up a home run, a go ahead home
- 21:13Speaker 3: run to Victor Martinez, and instead of pitching the eighth inning,
- 21:15Speaker 3: which I pretty much had found myself in all year,
- 21:18Speaker 3: I pitched the seventh thing on Sunday, and Darren was
- 21:20Speaker 3: kind of like that was a little bit of a jab,
- 21:22Speaker 3: you know, like you want to get your spot back
- 21:23Speaker 3: in the eighth. It was still a high leverage situation.
- 21:25Speaker 3: You're pitching the seventh, but it's not the eighth and
- 21:27Speaker 3: it's not the ninth. So I think there's ways to
- 21:30Speaker 3: go about it. But I think just kind of throwing
- 21:31Speaker 3: him out here, out there right now at this point
- 21:34Speaker 3: of the season doesn't really help because his appearance his
- 21:36Speaker 3: appearances are getting up there. This is the most he's
- 21:39Speaker 3: ever had in a big league season, So that's another
- 21:41Speaker 3: thing to think about. Also, if you're trying to just
- 21:43Speaker 3: get him out there, just to get him out there,
- 21:45Speaker 3: I don't see that really helping. But obviously Auburnez has
- 21:47Speaker 3: a little bit different way because he's thrown right back
- 21:49Speaker 3: out there in a safe situation on Monday night, so
- 21:52Speaker 3: he's got a little bit.
- 21:53Speaker 4: Different way of going about it.
- 21:54Speaker 3: But I think every manager has to find their ways
- 21:56Speaker 3: to get you in a spot to kind of take
- 21:58Speaker 3: the pressure off a little bit. I think they can
- 22:00Speaker 3: maybe find out here in the coming weeks with Rico.
- 22:04Speaker 2: He sure keeps giving him chances.
- 22:05Speaker 1: Rico can't say he's not throwing him out there, that
- 22:08Speaker 1: he's just in a stretch here where he's given up.
- 22:10Speaker 1: I believe it's four homers and over five appearances, yep,
- 22:13Speaker 1: so really really struggling right now.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Hey, we want to remind.
- 22:18Speaker 1: Our reviewers that Baseball America is the best place to
- 22:22Speaker 1: learn about all the prospects on the move this trade
- 22:25Speaker 1: deadline season and now through Monday, our viewers, we'll get
- 22:28Speaker 1: thirty percent off the first year of any digital annual
- 22:31Speaker 1: subscription with promo code Birdland thirty. You see it right
- 22:35Speaker 1: there on your screen, that's code Birdland thirty at Baseball
- 22:39Speaker 1: america dot com.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Check it out.
- 22:42Speaker 1: They'll have all the notes on the prospects on the
- 22:44Speaker 1: move between now and Monday at five o'clock, and we
- 22:48Speaker 1: may not have a show this weekend. We're actually we're
- 22:50Speaker 1: gonna have one upcoming with an Oriel guest. We'll save
- 22:54Speaker 1: that for a day or two from now, and then
- 22:57Speaker 1: we'll be with you knowing our schedule at the end
- 23:02Speaker 1: of the deadline. Does that sound right?
- 23:03Speaker 5: Yeah, Monday, right after the deadline, we'll have a video up.
- 23:09Speaker 1: So whatever happens for the Orioles, we'll let you know. Hey,
- 23:13Speaker 1: let's get to this young kid pitcher today, and I
- 23:16Speaker 1: want to show you some highlights in a minute, But
- 23:19Speaker 1: first tell you that Cayden Hunter is a left hander
- 23:21Speaker 1: who today moved to double A and through seven scoreless,
- 23:25Speaker 1: one hit, he walked to, he fanned ten. He has
- 23:30Speaker 1: pitched at three levels this year. And I want to
- 23:35Speaker 1: give you his statistics. I believe I got him here somewhere.
- 23:38Speaker 1: Maybe I don't. I just read him to you. He
- 23:40Speaker 1: is four and one with a one thirty two ERA.
- 23:44Speaker 1: And let's look at a highlight from today. Gets a
- 23:46Speaker 1: strike out here, Brad looks like a change up.
- 23:49Speaker 3: Yeah, usc yeah, really good change up there, good arm action,
- 23:54Speaker 3: obviously pitched diving down in a way that's for lefty,
- 23:57Speaker 3: if you could throw a good change up that that's
- 23:59Speaker 3: a huge equalizer, especially the righties.
- 24:01Speaker 4: But it's impressive.
- 24:02Speaker 3: When you get called up through a new level, you
- 24:04Speaker 3: always want to show your best stuff. And you know,
- 24:07Speaker 3: getting called up to the double A seven innings, one
- 24:09Speaker 3: HiT's a good way to start your promotion off, that's
- 24:11Speaker 3: for sure. I mean, anytime you move up in the
- 24:14Speaker 3: minor leagues, it's the same as if you get called
- 24:15Speaker 3: up to the big leagues. It's it's it's a promotion,
- 24:18Speaker 3: regardless of what level you're going to. So everybody wants
- 24:21Speaker 3: to get off to a good start. And that's a
- 24:22Speaker 3: really good highlight right there. And it looks like he's
- 24:24Speaker 3: got really good stuff. So it's impressive to see that
- 24:26Speaker 3: from him.
- 24:27Speaker 1: He's been a strike out machine this year. He started
- 24:30Speaker 1: at del Marvis six games, went to Frederick ten dominant.
- 24:33Speaker 1: Now he's at Bowie dominant. Performance today thirteen point four
- 24:37Speaker 1: to four k or nine thirty eight percent CA percentage.
- 24:42Speaker 1: That is the best of Eddie Oriel farm pitcher. They
- 24:45Speaker 1: tell me as fastball today was ninety two to ninety eight,
- 24:49Speaker 1: sat right in the middle there ninety four to ninety five.
- 24:51Speaker 1: He also throws the basic change slider curve. So Caden
- 24:55Speaker 1: Hunter one to watch. You eros are stacking up some
- 24:57Speaker 1: lefties on the farm. We just saw daily on Move
- 25:00Speaker 1: Up the Triple A. We know jerwa Has was in
- 25:03Speaker 1: the Futures game Boston Bateman's at Frederick Man. They got
- 25:07Speaker 1: some lefties coming on the farm, so that is exciting.
- 25:11Speaker 1: In our final minutes, guys will reiterate it's gonna be
- 25:17Speaker 1: a while few days. Chris Davis comes back for his
- 25:20Speaker 1: Hall of Fame. If you haven't watched our video with Chris,
- 25:23Speaker 1: you can watch it on our YouTube channel right now,
- 25:25Speaker 1: the Birdland Territory Channel. Chris was very open, honest and
- 25:28Speaker 1: candid in our interview this week. It was fantastic and
- 25:32Speaker 1: so go check that out. In addition, obviously you can
- 25:35Speaker 1: see all our archive shows there. So what do you
- 25:40Speaker 1: guys think it'll go down to the final day. I
- 25:43Speaker 1: kind of think it will for the Orioles. I think
- 25:45Speaker 1: Monday is going to be a big action day, or
- 25:49Speaker 1: if it's not, it won't be for lack of phone
- 25:52Speaker 1: calls that are happening.
- 25:54Speaker 4: Yeah, I think so. I just don't.
- 25:56Speaker 3: I mean, they're right there at the wildcard standing so
- 25:58Speaker 3: I don't. I don't see how you could stay and path.
- 26:00Speaker 3: But at the same time, I think these three games
- 26:03Speaker 3: go a long way, and it's we've been saying I
- 26:04Speaker 3: feel like we've been saying this now for three weeks.
- 26:06Speaker 4: But it's just where the team is at.
- 26:08Speaker 3: It's the standings are dictating where they're at. And I
- 26:12Speaker 3: think that's why we don't know which direction they're going
- 26:14Speaker 3: to go, because if they had gotten swept in a
- 26:16Speaker 3: couple of these series, I think we'd have a more
- 26:18Speaker 3: clear direction of what they're going to do. There's certain
- 26:20Speaker 3: pieces that we know they should probably move on from,
- 26:23Speaker 3: but right now they say and I think can't be
- 26:26Speaker 3: more than two and a half games out of Wildcard,
- 26:27Speaker 3: So it's I mean, it's you have two months ago,
- 26:30Speaker 3: so it's you're right there. That's all you can ask for.
- 26:33Speaker 3: And I know the record isn't what we had hoped,
- 26:35Speaker 3: but the standings are dictating what I think will happen.
- 26:38Speaker 4: So these three games go long way. When it comes
- 26:40Speaker 4: to their record.
- 26:41Speaker 5: Well, I certainly don't think they're doing nothing right like
- 26:45Speaker 5: one way or another. There's going to be some movement
- 26:48Speaker 5: on this roster, but what direction they go, I have
- 26:51Speaker 5: no idea, and I was looking a couple of years ago,
- 26:55Speaker 5: and I understand this is not a like for like situation.
- 26:58Speaker 5: This organizations in a mind different spot. But I went
- 27:01Speaker 5: back to twenty twenty two and they're a game above
- 27:04Speaker 5: five hundred. There were a game and a half out
- 27:06Speaker 5: of the wild card spot at that deadline, and they
- 27:09Speaker 5: traded Jorge Lopez and Trey Mancini and look Kinzight being
- 27:12Speaker 5: twenty twenty, I still think that was the right move
- 27:15Speaker 5: to do, but it was still bold of Michael Eyes
- 27:19Speaker 5: to do that at that point. Now, I don't know
- 27:22Speaker 5: how much they sell. The Rogers part of it is
- 27:25Speaker 5: the one that I can go either way. I really
- 27:29Speaker 5: have no idea what they're going to do with Trevor Rodgers.
- 27:32Speaker 5: I because if you don't sign him, you gotta trade him.
- 27:36Speaker 5: But I I don't know that. That's probably the most
- 27:40Speaker 5: difficult decision that Elias has to.
- 27:44Speaker 4: Me too, honestly, Sorry, Steve.
- 27:46Speaker 3: I think when you think of Trevor Rodgers, if you
- 27:49Speaker 3: move him, I almost feel like Tailor Ward has got
- 27:51Speaker 3: to go too, because you're kind of taking a stand.
- 27:54Speaker 3: I almost feel like if one goes, both are going
- 27:57Speaker 3: to go, and who knows they could be in the
- 27:58Speaker 3: same I don't We don't know at this point, but
- 28:00Speaker 3: I just feel like if one of those Domino's falls,
- 28:03Speaker 3: it feels like both of them, and then from there
- 28:05Speaker 3: you have your guests as good as mine. What could
- 28:07Speaker 3: happen because it could go a plethora of ways from there,
- 28:10Speaker 3: and you just don't know what you get back. So
- 28:11Speaker 3: do you get controllable guys, do you get minor league guys?
- 28:14Speaker 3: Is it a twenty twenty seven move? You just it's
- 28:17Speaker 3: just there's so many variables with the Oriels, I feel
- 28:19Speaker 3: like it's gonna be one of the most watched teams
- 28:21Speaker 3: at the deadline across baseball.
- 28:25Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 28:26Speaker 1: And they have two pieces on expiring contracts that are
- 28:31Speaker 1: really being sought right now. Everybody would like a lefty
- 28:34Speaker 1: pitcher as good as Trevor Rodgers, and many teams are
- 28:37Speaker 1: seeking a right handed outfield bet and that's Taylor Ward.
- 28:41Speaker 1: So that would be taking away from their chase unless
- 28:46Speaker 1: Olias can pull off a combo deal where he gets
- 28:48Speaker 1: a piece that helps this year and maybe a young
- 28:51Speaker 1: double a pitcher for the for the down the road,
- 28:53Speaker 1: or something that's certainly possible. And like you said, Tim,
- 28:57Speaker 1: they traded from their major league roster twenty twenty two.
- 29:00Speaker 1: Of course, that when they were kind of a.
- 29:02Speaker 7: Year ahead of Yeah, but totally thought at that time,
- 29:05Speaker 7: oh totally, it's it's not alike for like, And look,
- 29:08Speaker 7: I think at least fan perspective of Michael Lias was
- 29:12Speaker 7: way up here because the rebuild was going so well
- 29:15Speaker 7: compared to where it's at that I understand it's a
- 29:18Speaker 7: much different situation, but I do find it fascinating that
- 29:22Speaker 7: that team was above five hundred and even closer in
- 29:25Speaker 7: the mix and opted to sell and guys.
- 29:28Speaker 5: Then, of course there's the Adley Rushman at all. I
- 29:30Speaker 5: feel like every single contender is looking for a catcher,
- 29:33Speaker 5: but Adley being banged up, he was eligible to come
- 29:37Speaker 5: off the aisle today, he didn't obviously, and him and
- 29:41Speaker 5: Sam are going to be reevaluated over the weekend at
- 29:43Speaker 5: Camden Yards. There's so many moving parts, man, I'm just
- 29:48Speaker 5: really interested to see Monday.
- 29:51Speaker 1: And three teams that want to catcher are in the
- 29:53Speaker 1: Al East's Red Sox raised. That would shock me to
- 29:59Speaker 1: see Adleie Reutchman, of all players traded in the division,
- 30:04Speaker 1: and he's hurt. You can trade a player on the
- 30:06Speaker 1: I l so he could be moved. There's no question
- 30:09Speaker 1: that that could happen. I just would be stunned for
- 30:12Speaker 1: an Indivision trade of Adlie, and I'd be pretty surprised
- 30:16Speaker 1: for any trade, but I would not be surprised in
- 30:19Speaker 1: the winner. Now you've got a full year of control
- 30:22Speaker 1: every team now kind of can set back and see
- 30:26Speaker 1: this labor situation may dictate a lot.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Stay tuned, I guess is the best course.
- 30:32Speaker 4: Here, right, Yeah, yeah, I think so.
- 30:34Speaker 3: It's like we've been talking about it for two three weeks,
- 30:38Speaker 3: four weeks. I feel like, what are they gonna do?
- 30:40Speaker 3: And we still don't have a have a clue. So
- 30:42Speaker 3: if anybody has a crystal ball, send it our way
- 30:44Speaker 3: so we could have an idea. But it's gonna be
- 30:47Speaker 3: it's gonna be an interesting weekend and it's definitely something
- 30:49Speaker 3: to follow and then hopefully Monday we have some exciting
- 30:52Speaker 3: news one way or the other what happens. But I
- 30:54Speaker 3: don't I just can't imagine this being a blah trade
- 30:58Speaker 3: deadline for the Origos.
- 30:59Speaker 4: There's just a lot of stuff that happened. I feel
- 31:00Speaker 4: like come Monday.
- 31:03Speaker 1: So fans stay tuned, keep watching here. In the next
- 31:05Speaker 1: few days. We'll have an Oriole guest, special guests coming
- 31:08Speaker 1: our way. We'll have our trade Deadline show on Monday
- 31:11Speaker 1: after the deadline wraps up, and it's going to be
- 31:14Speaker 1: a big weekend in Birdland. The crowd should be great.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Orioles Phillies Hall of Fame Weekend spirits will be high
- 31:19Speaker 1: in downtown Baltimore. As always, we'll be around to talk
- 31:23Speaker 1: about it. Join you next time on Birdland Territory
