- 0:23Speaker 1: dot org. Golf dot Breck dot org. Busy couple of
- 0:26Speaker 1: days for the New Orleans Saints over the weekend, reportedly
- 0:30Speaker 1: adding a couple of assistant coaches here on Monday, adding
- 0:32Speaker 1: two more, and I might they at least hired Matthew.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Does any of that make sense? Mike Triplet's here? Who
- 0:37Speaker 1: makes sense of all of it for us? Mike Tripple
- 0:39Speaker 1: at New Orleans dot Football. He's on Twitter ex at
- 0:41Speaker 1: Mike Triplet A man, how.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Are you busy? Couple of days? I remind you the
- 0:46Speaker 2: last time there was a non business stretch? I can't remember?
- 0:50Speaker 3: Wait there last time there was a what.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Non busy stretch for the thing?
- 0:54Speaker 3: You remember that?
- 0:55Speaker 2: Then? They've been active, man, they've been reshaping.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Uh well that comes along with the coaching a new
- 1:01Speaker 1: coaching higher, right, I mean you have to remake the
- 1:03Speaker 1: whole thing. Let's start with these assistants then. Yeah, Robert Blanton,
- 1:07Speaker 1: Jay Rogers, Gary Brown, Scott Lenahan, anything there immediately just
- 1:11Speaker 1: jump out at you.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I mean Lenahan, right, I mean he was
- 1:17Speaker 2: at Montana, so he was he had taken a step
- 1:20Speaker 2: back in his coaching career. But that's the former head
- 1:22Speaker 2: coach on the staff. It's obviously a young staff. Brandon
- 1:25Speaker 2: Staley's also a former head coach, but he's probably gonna
- 1:28Speaker 2: have a senior role. He's gonna help with game management.
- 1:31Speaker 2: You know. Rizzy comes to mind, Joe Vitt comes to mind.
- 1:35Speaker 2: You know, you always want to have those guys on
- 1:38Speaker 2: your staff when you're first time head coach. And he's
- 1:41Speaker 2: really personal to Kellen Moore. He was actually the offensive
- 1:43Speaker 2: coordinator for the Lions when they chose More as an
- 1:47Speaker 2: undrafted rookie and then kind of quickly realized he was
- 1:51Speaker 2: basically a coach on the field tight and gave him
- 1:53Speaker 2: a lot of assignments that brought him to Dallas with
- 1:55Speaker 2: him that hired him as a coach. So he obviously
- 1:57Speaker 2: means a lot to him. It's good to have a
- 1:59Speaker 2: guy like that a staff similar to have enough Meyern
- 2:02Speaker 2: his staff who's he's you know, worked with for years
- 2:06Speaker 2: and years. So he's building the staff he wanted to build,
- 2:09Speaker 2: even though even though he was, you know, obviously the
- 2:12Speaker 2: last one to start assembli a staff. So that's good
- 2:14Speaker 2: to see that he's got his guys with him. He's
- 2:16Speaker 2: going to sink or swim with his guys.
- 2:18Speaker 1: You know what's interesting about Gary Brown as well, Mike.
- 2:21Speaker 1: You don't typically see lateral moves in the NFL, like.
- 2:25Speaker 3: A position coach to a position coach.
- 2:26Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:27Speaker 1: Brown was a position coach in Pittsburgh and I guess
- 2:29Speaker 1: he's going to be a position coach in New Orleans.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Make that So that is that is interesting. It's similar
- 2:34Speaker 2: to the Joel Thomas move with the Giant. He was
- 2:36Speaker 2: the Giants running backs coach and he came back to
- 2:38Speaker 2: be the Saints running backs coach. So a lot of time,
- 2:41Speaker 2: it could just be based on the relationships that have
- 2:43Speaker 2: been built between coaches who wanted to work together and
- 2:48Speaker 2: have the timing and the opportunity. So yeah, I will
- 2:51Speaker 2: I agree with you that I will be curious to
- 2:53Speaker 2: find out what was the genesis behind that one? And mate, look,
- 2:56Speaker 2: sometimes maybe Pittsburgh wanted to make a change, you know,
- 3:00Speaker 2: and that made him available, But it is it is
- 3:03Speaker 2: really always a reminder when these coaching steps are getting built,
- 3:07Speaker 2: You're always like, oh no, who's this first time coach
- 3:09Speaker 2: going to hire? And it's like, usually it's going to
- 3:12Speaker 2: be experienced veterans who are on the other twelve staffs
- 3:16Speaker 2: around the league that just got laid off, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 2: Kobek Lambs in Seattle, and you know, these guys are
- 3:22Speaker 2: always available, even when they're good.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Mike Triplet's here speaking of the guy's getting laid off.
- 3:27Speaker 1: Sol report over the weekend about the Saints possibly releasing
- 3:33Speaker 1: Tyron Matthew, Like, I understand he had a production decline,
- 3:37Speaker 1: but when I look at his contract, his dead number
- 3:40Speaker 1: is higher than his cap hit. So make this make sense?
- 3:43Speaker 1: Like why would that make sense to part ways with
- 3:45Speaker 1: hiring at this point?
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that one doesn't make a ton of
- 3:49Speaker 2: sense to me, And I had not heard that they're
- 3:53Speaker 2: planning to do that, so we have not reported that ourselves.
- 3:58Speaker 2: But I mean, everything's got to be on the same
- 4:00Speaker 2: It was this defense this year. I mean I don't
- 4:01Speaker 2: think Tomorrow Davis is going anywhere, but I don't think
- 4:06Speaker 2: anyone from that defense should be safe considering they're they're
- 4:09Speaker 2: changing all the coaches, they're changing the scheme, and they
- 4:13Speaker 2: have cap issues. So anything like that that would save
- 4:17Speaker 2: a little money and get younger and get cheaper and
- 4:21Speaker 2: maybe get better and maybe be thinking about the future.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I'm never gonna dismiss it out of hand. From everything
- 4:27Speaker 2: I've been able to gather, I kind of think Kim
- 4:29Speaker 2: Jordan winds up back here. I kind of think Taysom
- 4:32Speaker 2: Hill winds up staying here with a pay cut. I
- 4:35Speaker 2: think Kyra Manthick kind of already took his pay cut
- 4:37Speaker 2: last year, and then Tomorrow Davis already took his pay
- 4:41Speaker 2: cut last year. So I think those guys stay. Obviously,
- 4:44Speaker 2: I think Alvin Kamaras stays. But but none of that
- 4:47Speaker 2: would would surprise me. So that could be that could
- 4:50Speaker 2: be speculation turned into a report. But I agree with you,
- 4:54Speaker 2: they would not save a ton of money with Tyron,
- 4:57Speaker 2: who already reduced the salary.
- 4:58Speaker 3: Quite a bit last year that they.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Well, you and I have had this conversation so many
- 5:04Speaker 1: times over the years about how they can make it
- 5:06Speaker 1: work to get within cap compliance. So what I'm sure
- 5:09Speaker 1: you've probably already gotten the you know, the back of
- 5:11Speaker 1: the napkin and done the math on this. What would
- 5:14Speaker 1: make sense if you keep cam Jordan and taste him
- 5:17Speaker 1: and tyring in Kamara? Like, what are the moves that
- 5:19Speaker 1: would make sense, notably to get within cap compliance?
- 5:24Speaker 2: Well, I mean you could do it. You could restructure
- 5:27Speaker 2: the top just the simple restructure what they do every year,
- 5:30Speaker 2: which is, you know that the best comp is probably
- 5:33Speaker 2: the you know, getting the new credit card and just
- 5:36Speaker 2: transferring the balance. So now I don't have to worry
- 5:38Speaker 2: about it for another year, you know, except there's no interest,
- 5:42Speaker 2: you know, no interest involved when you do that. They've
- 5:44Speaker 2: been doing it for twelve years now. So just the
- 5:47Speaker 2: old simple restructure route, this money will still be waiting
- 5:50Speaker 2: for him again next year. You could, you could get
- 5:53Speaker 2: under the fifty they need to get under with four guys.
- 5:56Speaker 2: You could. You could do it with the top four
- 5:57Speaker 2: salaries and it will be no problem. So so it
- 6:01Speaker 2: won't be any problem. You know, they don't have to
- 6:03Speaker 2: cut anybody to get under the cap. But I do
- 6:06Speaker 2: think they're also going to look at all, right, let's
- 6:09Speaker 2: stop spending money, actually spending money so that next year's
- 6:12Speaker 2: cap looks a little better. I think a pay cut
- 6:15Speaker 2: will definitely happen with Taysom Hill. It'll definitely happen with
- 6:20Speaker 2: Kim Jordan if he stays. The only way Kim Jordan
- 6:23Speaker 2: would leave is if they don't have the role he wants,
- 6:26Speaker 2: you know, if he's not going to have a Russia passer,
- 6:28Speaker 2: if they only envision as an interior rusher on rundowns,
- 6:32Speaker 2: then he might want to leave. But otherwise, I think
- 6:34Speaker 2: the Pike cut works out with him, and I think
- 6:36Speaker 2: there's a good chance they work on to pick cut
- 6:38Speaker 2: with Derek Carr too, and there's some money there. I
- 6:41Speaker 2: think everybody wrecked. Even though he said he didn't want to.
- 6:44Speaker 2: Maybe they can find something win win, guarantee a little
- 6:47Speaker 2: bit more money in his bonus next year if it's
- 6:50Speaker 2: a parting gift. You know, he wouldn't make forty million
- 6:55Speaker 2: on the open market, so I'm sure he recognizes that.
- 6:58Speaker 2: Maybe they promised to spend them money and fortify around
- 7:01Speaker 2: him on offense if he sees it as a win win.
- 7:03Speaker 2: But I bet they end up saving a little money
- 7:05Speaker 2: on his contract. So that's all real saving, that's not
- 7:09Speaker 2: just pushing money around, that's real saving. And then guys
- 7:12Speaker 2: that might cut, Yeah, guys they might cut. I think
- 7:15Speaker 2: that'll only be if it's a football decision. Jamal Williams
- 7:19Speaker 2: seems like an obvious one. I'm wondering about Nathan Shepherd
- 7:22Speaker 2: and Colin Saunders depending on the vision of the new
- 7:26Speaker 2: defense and guys like that. But I don't think, you know,
- 7:29Speaker 2: we we've never really seen the Saints cut someone because
- 7:32Speaker 2: they can't figure out any other way to get under
- 7:34Speaker 2: the cap. They will cut them only if it's a
- 7:36Speaker 2: football decision.
- 7:38Speaker 3: Do you think that could be the plan With Tyron Matthew.
- 7:42Speaker 2: It could be. It would be Tyron Manview would only
- 7:44Speaker 2: be cut if the Saints look at him and they say,
- 7:47Speaker 2: you know, we didn't like what we saw in the
- 7:49Speaker 2: field last year. He's not a seven eight million dollar
- 7:52Speaker 2: player anymore. We've got to move on. And I'd be
- 7:55Speaker 2: a little surprised. I don't think they would do it
- 7:58Speaker 2: just because, man and we got to get under the caps,
- 8:01Speaker 2: so we have to cut Tyra Matthew. It would be
- 8:03Speaker 2: this player's not worth this much money anymore, and you
- 8:06Speaker 2: know he's not making that much, so I'd be a
- 8:09Speaker 2: little surprised his cap.
- 8:10Speaker 1: I can't rule that his cap pits eleven three, but
- 8:13Speaker 1: the dead number, Mike is thirteen to eight. So if
- 8:16Speaker 1: you cut him, you'd actually it would cost you effectively.
- 8:19Speaker 1: You tell me if I'm wrong, it would effectively cost
- 8:21Speaker 1: you more to cut him than it would keep it.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you could always make a player at
- 8:25Speaker 2: June first cut and paying half of that this year
- 8:32Speaker 2: or half of it next year. So you're still saving
- 8:34Speaker 2: the money that you're saving by not paying in this
- 8:36Speaker 2: salary in the long term. That's why you would do it.
- 8:40Speaker 2: But again, you don't do it just to get under
- 8:42Speaker 2: the cap by next week. You don't do it for
- 8:44Speaker 2: that reason. You do it if you if you feel like,
- 8:47Speaker 2: you know, we shouldn't write a check for this much
- 8:49Speaker 2: money to this player anymore.
- 8:51Speaker 1: A couple more for you, Mike Schulpltz, our guest New
- 8:53Speaker 1: Orleans Dot Football.
- 8:54Speaker 3: You.
- 8:54Speaker 1: I know you and Nicker both at the combine and
- 8:56Speaker 1: Indy coming out of the combine. Is there a player
- 8:59Speaker 1: or position based on when your eyes saw in the
- 9:02Speaker 1: conversations you had that maybe started to crystallize a little
- 9:05Speaker 1: bit for New Orleans for the draft.
- 9:08Speaker 2: No, and I'm about to do this position needs preview
- 9:14Speaker 2: and I have a ten way time for first place.
- 9:17Speaker 3: Yeah, how to say everything of it?
- 9:19Speaker 2: Last year I could have told you this early. Probably,
- 9:22Speaker 2: I don't know if we can go back and find
- 9:23Speaker 2: the staves how early I probably seen your bull time
- 9:27Speaker 2: it became no. I think it was after the first
- 9:29Speaker 2: wave of free agency when it became obvious, all right,
- 9:31Speaker 2: they're drafting their left tackle in the draft. They were
- 9:35Speaker 2: installing a new offensive scheme. They had not addressed it yet.
- 9:39Speaker 2: In free agency. It was so obvious, and they were like,
- 9:42Speaker 2: you know, a lot of good ones available in the
- 9:44Speaker 2: top twelve or whatever. I mean, everybody doing in my
- 9:47Speaker 2: draft was putting one of these left tackles on the
- 9:50Speaker 2: Saint Trusts here. I cannot. I cannot do that. I mean,
- 9:53Speaker 2: maybe it'll crystallize a little more after free agency when
- 9:57Speaker 2: they filled some other holes. Maybe they'll fill one so
- 10:01Speaker 2: you know convincingly that you can take it off the board.
- 10:06Speaker 2: But boy, I just you know everything they need a
- 10:09Speaker 2: defensive end, a defensive tackle, a receiver, a tight end,
- 10:13Speaker 2: and a left guard could use the right tackle. I mean,
- 10:16Speaker 2: they just quarterbacks. Man out of the realm of possibility
- 10:19Speaker 2: is just this year's draft board that makes quarterbacks seem unlikely.
- 10:24Speaker 2: But no, it's everything. It's even running back is on
- 10:28Speaker 2: the board if they really love gent at number nine.
- 10:31Speaker 2: But I mean, there's there's nothing I can take off
- 10:33Speaker 2: my board based on the Saints right now. And you
- 10:36Speaker 2: know that's good. You know you don't force yourself into
- 10:38Speaker 2: a decision. But it's bad for the obvious reason.
- 10:41Speaker 3: Where would you start in free agency? Like starting from
- 10:43Speaker 3: scratch as a player. There money to.
- 10:45Speaker 2: Spend agency, I don't. I don't spend huge in free
- 10:50Speaker 2: agency certainly, and I don't spend on an old guy
- 10:53Speaker 2: in free agency. I am not worried about just the
- 10:55Speaker 2: twenty twenty five s things. You know, I'm not filling
- 10:58Speaker 2: a hole with an expense. Know I am not signing
- 11:01Speaker 2: Davante Adams to fill the receiver need. Now. I actually
- 11:06Speaker 2: think their salary cap outlook. I did a piece on
- 11:09Speaker 2: this a couple of weeks ago with with the rise
- 11:12Speaker 2: and the cap and the expect to as I go
- 11:14Speaker 2: their their their salary cap outlook is not that bad
- 11:17Speaker 2: long term. So if they see a twenty seven year
- 11:20Speaker 2: old guy that they think can be a part, you
- 11:23Speaker 2: know that they want to sign to a four year
- 11:24Speaker 2: deal because you know, he's going to be a part
- 11:26Speaker 2: of this this year's team, but also a part of
- 11:29Speaker 2: what they rebuild into in the future. I wouldn't have
- 11:33Speaker 2: a problem with that, But I'm not just plugging holes
- 11:35Speaker 2: with you know, expensive thirty five year old guys that
- 11:38Speaker 2: that that's still my most immediate need. They need to
- 11:42Speaker 2: get younger. They need to get young talents. So I mean, look,
- 11:45Speaker 2: defensive end is huge. I'm really curious how much what
- 11:49Speaker 2: they think of their defensive lineman because they're going to
- 11:52Speaker 2: bring in this new front with Brandon Staley, not not
- 11:55Speaker 2: drastically changing to a three four, like they need a
- 11:58Speaker 2: big three hundred and fifty pound nose tackle and two
- 12:01Speaker 2: two hundred and forty pounds pass rushers. You know, you
- 12:04Speaker 2: can do it a lot of different ways, but they
- 12:06Speaker 2: might not like the guys that they have right now,
- 12:07Speaker 2: and they might want to bring in three or four
- 12:09Speaker 2: new guys. So I think the defensive line, maybe left
- 12:11Speaker 2: guard are positions you could consider in free agency. Maybe
- 12:16Speaker 2: an X receiver if there's one they really like. They're
- 12:19Speaker 2: obviously very expensive, but those would maybe be free agency
- 12:23Speaker 2: holes to fill. It definitely tight end. Maybe that's pre
- 12:25Speaker 2: agency and the draft. They have a lot of needs
- 12:28Speaker 2: at tight end, especially if they don't bring back John Johnson.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Yeah, the only good thing about having so many needs
- 12:33Speaker 1: is it's hard to miss, so dark.
- 12:37Speaker 3: Mike Triplett, you really don't.
- 12:38Speaker 2: Force yourself into a hole.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Right, completely, New Orleans dot Football. You'll goodbye.
- 12:43Speaker 1: Read the stuff over there makesure you follow Mike at
- 12:45Speaker 1: Mike Triplett and we appreciate it as always.
- 12:47Speaker 2: Thank you, thank you,
