- 0:39SPEAKER_01: a teacher, a mentor, a symbol of Philadelphia toughness and heart.
- 0:45SPEAKER_01: He could also be controversial,
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: a lightning rod at times,

- 1:17SPEAKER_01: one that captures his complexity, his humor, his discipline, and his humanity.
- 1:24SPEAKER_01: Ultimately,
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: we're building toward an oral history biography in the spirit of "Loose Balls"

- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Go now.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: We'll wait and order them.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: We're not really going to wait for you to order them, but you should.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: My name is Michael Einbinder-Schatz.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: I'm the creator and host of the Life Lessons Collective Podcast.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I'm also a lifelong learner, a Temple alum, and a former technology business owner.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: I've spent a career helping people connect, grow, and tell their stories.
- 1:59SPEAKER_01: And joining me is my partner and co-host,
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: someone who knows the Temple basketball world inside and out.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: John DiCarlo,
- 2:08SPEAKER_01: Managing Director of Student Media and the Claire Smith Center for Sports Media
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: at Temple University's Klein College of Media and Communication.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: He's also an adjunct instructor in journalism and the longtime editor

- 2:28SPEAKER_01: And more than 400 podcast episodes to his name.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, that's the CV part.
- 2:35SPEAKER_01: We got that out of the way.
- 2:36SPEAKER_01: John, I'm never going to read that part again.
- 2:40SPEAKER_01: We're thrilled to be recording here in the David and Rhonda Cohen.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: And while we'll have plenty of time in later episodes
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: to acknowledge our amazing advisory board,
- 2:47SPEAKER_01: whose guidance and support helped make The Chaney Pod a reality,
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: We want to especially thank them all.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: And don't worry, we're going to name you all properly at the end of this episode.
- 3:21SPEAKER_01: Now, John,
- 3:22SPEAKER_01: before we jump into today's conversation,
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: I know you were adamant about who our first guest should be.
- 3:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: It just only felt right that our first conversation begin with family,
- 3:33SPEAKER_02: with the people who knew Coach best.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: And that's why we're honored today to be joined by John Chaney Jr.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: and his wife, Maria Chaney, son and daughter-in-law to help us start the journey.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: And before we roll,
- 3:46SPEAKER_01: I just want to say how grateful I am personally at this moment to be finally here.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: This project has been in the works for a long time,
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: more than two years of ideas,
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: planning,
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: collaboration,
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: and to be sitting here recording this first episode in this space
- 4:03SPEAKER_01: with these guests feels incredibly special.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: And with that, John Chaney Jr., Maria Chaney, welcome to The Chaney Pod.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: It's so great to see you both.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Thank you very much.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: It's good to be here.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Yes, it is.
- 4:17SPEAKER_01: So, it's been a long time coming.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: We've had, we've talked a few times.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: We've broken bread a few times.
- 4:23SPEAKER_01: We've shared ideas.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: And, you know, John was the one who wanted John first.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: I was like, nah, let's not.
- 4:31SPEAKER_01: No, all kidding you.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: I thought it was the best idea.
- 4:35SPEAKER_01: Frankly, I thought it was the best idea John to come up with.
- 4:40SPEAKER_01: I tend to joke a lot.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: You know that about me.
- 4:45SPEAKER_01: I think we both thought that it would be good to talk with both of you.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: To start things off just getting the family perspective.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: Obviously,
- 4:54SPEAKER_01: in the time that we have here today,
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: we can't begin to encompass the life of your father.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: It's a much bigger project than that, and we envision talking to you folks a number of times.
- 5:06SPEAKER_01: But let's start off at the beginning.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: John, what's some of your earliest memories of your dad?
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Well, he's an exceptional father and an exceptional coach.
- 5:20SPEAKER_00: I know growing up, I used to always come home and he used to always tell me to follow my dreams.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: And he also told that to my sister and my brother as well.
- 5:34SPEAKER_00: And I respect him for that.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: A lot of the times I've talked to him about life,
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: perspectives, but he always encouraged me to play sports.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: One of the sports I played was football, basketball.
- 5:57SPEAKER_00: He didn't like for me to play football because...
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: He didn't want me to get hurt.
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: But I played it anyway.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: I played for the Wimmore Bantams.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: That's up there in, where's that, Willow Grove area.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: And played 90-pounders and won 15-pounders.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: And he used to come to my games, and I loved that when he was there to see me play.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: I know one game I played against King of Prussia, and I had four.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Played cornerback.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: I had four interceptions.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: And I had a tremendous game.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: My name was in the papers and all that.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: So that was the first time my name's ever been in the papers before.
- 6:41SPEAKER_00: So I was proud of that.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: That was real.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: It had to be about maybe.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: 10 or 12, I think.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: That must have been the thrill.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:52SPEAKER_01: But it must have also been the thrill, like you were saying, seeing your dad there.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:55SPEAKER_01: Just knowing that you were doing that in front of him.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: He was at mostly all my games, and I was surprised.
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: I know he had a busy schedule coaching,
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: but he was there for most of my games, and I respected that.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: My mom didn't show up because she was scared.
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: My dad was there.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Dad didn't want you to play because he didn't want you to get hurt, but he still came.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: Your mom was afraid you would get hurt and she didn't want to see it.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Exactly.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Don't quite understand that,
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: but I was happy to play that sport.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: Then I played basketball.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: That was my first love.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Because it was his first 11.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: He used to push me to play basketball and I played in the Sonny O League and played
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: in high school and also in college.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: I went to Frankfort High School, played for Vince Miller.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: You probably heard of him.
- 8:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I talked to him.
- 8:07SPEAKER_01: I did a newsletter back in the early 90s, and he, like, 90,
- 8:11SPEAKER_01: 91, I think he was still, I think Coach Miller was still at Frankfurt at that time.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Frankfurt at the time, yeah.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and the guys that played with Jeffrey Clark and Daryl Miller and Claude Gross,
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: Jr., he was on the team, also...
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: A guy named Melvin Kilgore, part of the Kilgore family.
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: So we had a pretty good team.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: We played against guys like Gene Banks and Lewis Lloyd back in 1975 and 76 era.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: You played, I was doing a little research.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Point guard.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: I don't want to act like I had this off the tip of my tongue because I didn't.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: But you played in the playoffs against Overbrook, right?
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, in Overbrook, correct.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: And I think I read it was a pretty close game.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we had a better record.
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: We played at our place in the playoffs because of our record.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: And we lost to them, I think, by four.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and those would have been the years where Lewis Lloyd and Gene Banks were like
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: the two dominant
- 9:28SPEAKER_00: players in the league.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, cool stuff.
- 9:33SPEAKER_02: Was your father as hard on you as a point guard as he was his point guard at the Temple?
- 9:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah, he was hard.
- 9:39SPEAKER_00: He was hard on me as a point guard.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: What I learned from him was defense.
- 9:47SPEAKER_00: I played very good defense.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: I used to steal the ball a lot.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: And I wouldn't turn the ball over.
- 9:55SPEAKER_00: So I protected the ball very well.
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: And I did that all through when I was playing in the Sunny Hill League in high school.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: And he admired me for that.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Was that something that he stressed a lot, the way we saw at Temple and...
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:12SPEAKER_01: That turnovers were the big sin.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: Was a demon, yeah.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: He didn't like turnovers.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: I think one or two years he led the country in less turnovers.
- 10:25SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: So he makes sure that turnovers like...
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: It was like a basket to him, you know.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: So he wanted to make sure if we don't turn the ball over, that could be a basket.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: So he was pretty adamant about turnovers.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: He talked to us so much as reporters about what he valued, what he cherished.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: You could ask him a question
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: about a game detail,
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: and as you know, it would turn into like a life lesson.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: What sort of values did he talk to you about?
- 11:01SPEAKER_02: How did he and your mother raise you?
- 11:04SPEAKER_02: What did they talk to you about?
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Were they strict parents?
- 11:06SPEAKER_02: What was that part of life like for you?
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: Well, my mother wasn't so strict, but my dad was pretty strict.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: My dad, one time I had
- 11:25SPEAKER_00: a party I had to go to.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: Up the street, right up the street from my house.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: And it was my, it was a friend of mine that had to party.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: And he said he wouldn't let me go.
- 11:41SPEAKER_00: And he was the one out with my mother for dinner and my grandmother was watching us.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: And my grandmother wouldn't let me, wouldn't let me go at all.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: And, uh, so, uh,
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: that happened to be, uh,
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: It was actually a girlfriend of mine,
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: and she broke up with me, because I didn't come to her party.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: I guess that's one of the reasons why Maria is sitting here with us now.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: It was fake, because they're all meant to be.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: That was one learning thing that I had to do.
- 12:23SPEAKER_00: My dad wouldn't let me go to parties, certain parties, especially if he wasn't home.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Another thing is that he always made me make sure I came home,
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: try to make sure I'm home on 8 o'clock, 8.30.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: I used to go to this place to play basketball, Sedgwick Playground on Sedgwick in Germantown.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: And as long as I was home by 8, 8.30,
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't be in trouble, so I always make sure I came home on time.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: Was there a reason for that?
- 13:00SPEAKER_01: Was there instances where maybe you pushed the limit a little bit and
- 13:04SPEAKER_01: then you learned, all right, maybe I better not mess around?
- 13:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I mean,
- 13:10SPEAKER_00: he would scold me a little bit,
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: but he would also tell me that anything late at night leads to trouble.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: So if you're out late at night or whatever, it's trouble out there.
- 13:27SPEAKER_00: So you make sure I was home at a decent time.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: And also, I was pretty good in school.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: So he didn't get on me as much as far as... Because I was very good in math and science.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: I was very good.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: When we first moved around,
- 13:46SPEAKER_00: moved in Mount Airy,
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: he had me going to Pastoria School Which was,
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: I think that was like in Germantown area.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: And then he moved me from Pastorius to Houston Elementary,
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: which was in East Mount,
- 14:02SPEAKER_00: which was a better school, better area, and better education.
- 14:08SPEAKER_00: So he made sure I had the right education as far as going to school
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: and making sure I had the right teachers in mind.
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: And Maria and I,
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: we We cherish that, too,
- 14:21SPEAKER_00: because we sent our son to a Catholic school up there in Chuston Hill
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: to make sure he got a very good education.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: But, yeah, my dad was always there for me.
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: He put me in all the camps that were around.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: I remember the first camp I went to was the Sixers camp.
- 14:48SPEAKER_00: It was up in the Poconos.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: And every year,
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: I mean every week,
- 14:53SPEAKER_00: they would have a Sixers player show up, like Wally Jones or Hal Greer.
- 15:00SPEAKER_00: And that was great.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: And then at his barbecues,
- 15:05SPEAKER_00: I would come home and I'd walk to the back and all of a sudden I'd go out the door
- 15:12SPEAKER_00: and I'd see Hal Greer, Chet Walker, Will Chamoy,
- 15:20SPEAKER_00: Who else?
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Wally Jones.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: And it was like a Sixers at my house almost every summer.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: So that was incredible.
- 15:32SPEAKER_00: Sonny Hill was there.
- 15:33SPEAKER_00: A few of my other dad's friends.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: And your dad was the barbecue master.
- 15:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he loved to cook.
- 15:41SPEAKER_00: He would go down to South Philly,
- 15:43SPEAKER_00: pick up his vegetables and his meats and stuff and come home and he would stay in
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: the kitchen.
- 15:51SPEAKER_00: And he was, actually he was a better cook than my mom, but I didn't want to tell my mom that.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: But he was a very good cook.
- 15:58SPEAKER_00: Except her cabbage.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:01SPEAKER_00: Well, my dad loved cabbage.
- 16:03SPEAKER_00: And my mom cooked the best cabbage.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: How did she make it?
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: And she cooked the best fried chicken, too.
- 16:10SPEAKER_00: Oh, I'll never tell.
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: I'll never tell.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: I was hoping to come out of here with a recipe.
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: I'm going to have to depend on you.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: it's funny you bring up the barbecues because that was a terrific memory I have
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: of your father.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: The auction.
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: The auction.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: And it was at Bill Bradshaw's house when he was the athletic director at the temple.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: And I was part of a group that we had like the winning bid.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: And it was supposed to be It was supposed to be,
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: John Baum was bringing your father,
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: and there were like 10 of us there,
- 16:56SPEAKER_01: and we were like, hey,
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: he's only going to be there for a couple hours,
- 17:00SPEAKER_01: but he was going to do his famous barbecue, and...
- 17:04SPEAKER_01: He shows up,
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: and seven hours later,
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: we're still laughing, and he's telling stories, and it was just a great day.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: You could just tell that he just loved being with people.
- 17:18SPEAKER_01: So I can imagine what the barbecues must have been like.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: Well, he liked smoking his meat.
- 17:23SPEAKER_00: His meat, especially his ribs.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: He'd make tremendous ribs out of sight, and brisket he would make that was really good.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: But he had a smoker in the back, and he would smoke for hours of the meats that he had.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: He prepared a lot of meats.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: And he would do that not just for him, but he would do that for the people on the block.
- 17:53SPEAKER_00: He would hand out meats to his neighbors.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: A guy named Mr. Roundtree, he was a detective.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: I think he worked with Rizzo.
- 18:04SPEAKER_00: Because I know Rizzo used to come by the house to pick him up from time to time.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: And Rizzo lived in Mountain Area as well, Mayor Rizzo.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: But yeah, he would share his meats with the neighbors and his food with the neighbors.
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: He would take this food over to such and such or take it over to Mr. Long's house.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: Don't forget the bones for the dogs.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: No.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: He would go up to Chestnut Hill Market,
- 18:37SPEAKER_03: Farmer's Market,
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: and there was,
- 18:40SPEAKER_03: I forget the name of the place in there,
- 18:42SPEAKER_03: he would get his bacon, bacon bits for his cabins.
- 18:54SPEAKER_03: And get the bones.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: They were baking ends.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: They were ends.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Like the burner.
- 19:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:02SPEAKER_03: And then he would pick up bones for Mr. Roundtree's dog.
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: Mr. Roundtree's dog.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: And my dog.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: And your dog.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: We had a dog too.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: So I'm wondering what else besides basketball were important focuses in your upbringing?
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: I know obviously the food and the company and the social aspect,
- 19:23SPEAKER_01: but what was life like in your home when you were growing
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: up?
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: And by the way, Maria, don't worry.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: We're getting to you.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: It's
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: quite all right.
- 19:32SPEAKER_03: I'm fine.
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: I'm fine.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: We're going to ask Maria all the hard questions.
- 19:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, he, I mean,
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: we always watched basketball all the time in the household, so that was a must.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: So one of the things he did, that he had fun doing in the house, played pinochle.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: He always had guys over to play cards.
- 20:02SPEAKER_00: And there was times where I would get up to go to school the next day.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: And they're still sitting in the dining room playing cards from the previous day.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 20:15SPEAKER_00: So, you know, they were having fun, you know, playing cards.
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, do they get any sleep?
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: But that was his love.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: He loved to play cards, loved to cook.
- 20:34SPEAKER_00: And he always talked about, hmm?
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Shopping?
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he loves to shop.
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: But, uh...
- 20:43SPEAKER_01: For anything in particular?
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: I mean, I've read the stories about the Italian market,
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: certainly,
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: and finding the right tomato and tomatoes and,
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: you know, some of that stuff is legendary, but...
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Oh, and clothes, too.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: Clothing?
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: He loves his ties.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: Ties.
- 20:59SPEAKER_00: And when he would lose a game, he would give that tie away.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: You know, so that was the tie that he would give to one of his friends or whatever.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Uh...
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: Or to you.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Or to me, yeah.
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: I got some of his ties, too.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: I got quite a bit of his ties.
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: But he didn't lose a lot of games, so I didn't get as many ties.
- 21:20SPEAKER_00: He had like 700-something wins at the time.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: I don't know how many losses he had.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Quite a bit less.
- 21:33SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 21:34SPEAKER_02: When did you start to get a sense of how charismatic he was and how good
- 21:41SPEAKER_02: a basketball coach he was?
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Like, when did you start to get a sense of,
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: like, my father's a big deal locally, regionally, nationally.
- 21:49SPEAKER_02: Like, the man that we knew.
- 21:50SPEAKER_02: When did you start to get a sense of, like, how important and how influential he was?
- 21:57SPEAKER_00: Well, I know at one time when he was coaching high school at Grex.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: He used to bring me to practice.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: And one of the days, I think it was bring your son to school day or whatever.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: So he brought me to practice and I would sit in his office and watch these guys practice.
- 22:19SPEAKER_00: And that's the first time I got a clue of what he was doing.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: And how old were you, John, at the
- 22:24SPEAKER_00: time?
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: I think I had to be.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: He was coaching at maybe about nine.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 22:32SPEAKER_00: Nine years old.
- 22:33SPEAKER_01: So you're young, now you're getting to see him in action.
- 22:35SPEAKER_00: In action, yeah.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: But I never saw him play.
- 22:39SPEAKER_00: And I always wanted to know who had films of him playing basketball.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: I never saw him play.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: And that's something I would...
- 22:49SPEAKER_00: Love to see.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: I was wondering,
- 22:51SPEAKER_01: because that was one of the things,
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: I might even have it on the list here,
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: I was wondering if he ever took you on one of those weekend Eastern League trips.
- 22:57SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Because he was doing some weekend Eastern League when you were a kid, right?
- 23:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well he played for Bethune-Cookman,
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: and then he played in the Eastern League as a pro,
- 23:10SPEAKER_00: and I never saw him play as a pro in the Eastern League,
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: and then he played in the Baker League,
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: and he was a player coach in the Baker League,
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: He used to bring me a few games there, but I think at that age, I think I was maybe seven.
- 23:27SPEAKER_00: I wasn't paying attention.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: My attention plan span wasn't too good at that time.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: So I was just running around the court all the time with some of the other kids,
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: some of the other father's sons that were there.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: But that was one thing that I always wanted.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: But when he was coaching...
- 23:49SPEAKER_00: I know one game,
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: he brought me to,
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: they were playing Joe Bryant's team, Kobe Bryant's father's team, which is Bartram.
- 24:02SPEAKER_00: And he said that all we have to do is stop Kobe,
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: I mean, stop Joe Bryant, and we can win the game.
- 24:12SPEAKER_00: And they couldn't do that.
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: They stopped everybody else on his team, but they couldn't stop him.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: He was unstoppable in that game, you know.
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: Then he moved on to Chaney,
- 24:31SPEAKER_00: and I used to go to games there,
- 24:33SPEAKER_00: and it was kind of funny because I used to come to his practices there,
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: and I was wondering why women are in the gymnasium with him.
- 24:46SPEAKER_00: So he always had practice with him.
- 24:49SPEAKER_00: With Vivian Stringer's team.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 24:51SPEAKER_00: They would practice on one end and he would practice on the other end.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: And they would share the floor together.
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: And that was amazing because I never seen that.
- 24:59SPEAKER_00: I don't think no team or college team was doing that at the time.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: So that was amazing.
- 25:10SPEAKER_00: Maybe that's why they were so successful.
- 25:14SPEAKER_00: Because she was successful in winning as well.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: As my dad was when he won the NCAA tournament.
- 25:22SPEAKER_00: It was back in 78.
- 25:24SPEAKER_00: 78, I think.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: 78.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: But that's when I realized he was a heck of a coach.
- 25:32SPEAKER_01: When he won it all.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: When he won it all.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:37SPEAKER_00: And then the temple came after him.
- 25:40SPEAKER_00: He's always been dedicated to stay at one particular level.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: He's had offers.
- 25:47SPEAKER_00: Even when he's at Temple, he had offers.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to tell you what teams,
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: because I don't want to tell you that,
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: but I know some of the teams that he had offers in.
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: He loved Peter LeCore so much that he wanted to stay at Temple the rest of his career.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 26:12SPEAKER_00: Peter used to come to his practices and bring bagels and donuts.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: And they're like 6.30 in the morning.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Who does that?
- 26:21SPEAKER_00: 5, 6.30 in the morning, they would have practice.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: I'm just curious for either of you,
- 26:29SPEAKER_01: because Maria, I know you had such a special relationship with him.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: What can you tell us that he shared with the two of you about his upbringings?
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: What it was like for him as a kid.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: Well, I remember your grandmother.
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: I remember his mom, grandmom early.
- 26:51SPEAKER_03: I met her quite a few times,
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: but he would tell us about Dr.
- 27:00SPEAKER_03: Penny, his friend, in South Philly, and the sandwiches.
- 27:07SPEAKER_03: The first time he had broccoli rabe.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: Remember that?
- 27:09SPEAKER_00: Broccoli Rob, yeah.
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: Here's Dr. Penny with the sandwich with this green stuff.
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: He's like, what is that?
- 27:18SPEAKER_03: And it was Broccoli Rob with, was it turkey or something?
- 27:22SPEAKER_03: I can't remember.
- 27:23SPEAKER_00: I think it was roast pork.
- 27:24SPEAKER_00: Roast pork.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: He loves his roast pork.
- 27:27SPEAKER_03: And he just, from that moment on, he just fell in love with Broccoli Rob.
- 27:32SPEAKER_03: I'll never forget that, how he would be sitting there.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: But he always talked about, you know, how poor He was growing up.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: And to never forget where you came from.
- 27:44SPEAKER_03: And he never did.
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: He never did.
- 27:47SPEAKER_03: He fought for the poor.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: He always did.
- 27:50SPEAKER_03: That I do remember.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: He used to talk a lot,
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: and I'm wondering if he shared a lot of the same stuff at home,
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: like the wrongs that he saw,
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: the things that he saw growing up, and that shaped his worldview.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: Like he would say always,
- 28:04SPEAKER_02: I'm going to butcher this,
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: it's like if you're going to raise the ceiling,
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: you have to bring the floor with you.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: I probably might have butchered that,
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: but did he talk with the two of you just about some of those experiences
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: that shaped his worldview?
- 28:16SPEAKER_02: Because he shared it with us, and I was wondering what it was like in the home as well.
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: Well, I think he went into a lot of kids' homes, and they were underprivileged kids.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: And he wanted to bring their...
- 28:34SPEAKER_00: When he talked about the floor,
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: bringing the roof down or the floor down,
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: the ceiling,
- 28:39SPEAKER_00: he was talking about,
- 28:40SPEAKER_00: so they can reach it, so they can
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: better themselves and also...
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: He would make sure that they would get a good education.
- 28:56SPEAKER_00: And that's why he was always Proposition 48.
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: He was always spoke about.
- 29:05SPEAKER_00: And underprivileged kids that never had the opportunity
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: to be successful in life.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: So he wanted to make sure that they had a chance at trying to Better themselves
- 29:22SPEAKER_00: to get a good education, to get to college.
- 29:29SPEAKER_00: And so he always went after kids that needed help.
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: And he explored that avenue for those particular kids.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: And that's why the parents, he would go and visit these parents and parents would trust in him.
- 29:48SPEAKER_00: And...
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: They fell in love with my dad,
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: the parents that were,
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: that they sent their kids to college, to Temple, or to Chaney.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Got them into college, you know.
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: He was, he was for that.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: He was, you know, he's always for the underdog, you know.
- 30:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: So he's, he's, he believed in that, and That was something that I admired about them.
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: As a coach, a lot of coaches didn't look at it that way.
- 30:28SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 30:31SPEAKER_01: So, shift gears a little bit here.
- 30:34SPEAKER_01: When and how did the two of you meet?
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: Oh, well, there's a couple of stories for that.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: We love a good story.
- 30:42SPEAKER_03: I'll tell the right story.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: We actually met.
- 30:50SPEAKER_03: We met, I was at a party with a friend, and he was there with his best friend.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: I did not know this man, and he came up to me and knew my name.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: Hey, Maria, and I'm like, who are you?
- 31:06SPEAKER_03: And he's talking to me, and then that was it.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: Introduced me to his best friend, and then that was it.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: Never saw him again.
- 31:14SPEAKER_03: And a year later, about a year later, we met.
- 31:16SPEAKER_00: Well, tell them the beginning now.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: Tell them the beginning.
- 31:18SPEAKER_03: That is the beginning.
- 31:19SPEAKER_00: No, I came over and I kissed you.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: No, well, you kissed me on my cheek.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: I kissed you on your cheek.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: That's nice.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: Didn't even know who she was.
- 31:25SPEAKER_01: The delicious details are coming out.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: I didn't know who she was.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: Podcast episode.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: We don't need
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: to tell everything.
- 31:31SPEAKER_00: I was on the cheek.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 31:33SPEAKER_03: So then about a year later, 88, we met in April.
- 31:36SPEAKER_03: Dad had just won the Atlantic 10 championship.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: Now, I did not follow college ball.
- 31:44SPEAKER_03: I followed the NBA and I was a football girl.
- 31:47SPEAKER_03: I liked football.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: And I had no clue who John Chaney was.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: And everybody's coming up to him.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Congratulating me.
- 31:58SPEAKER_03: Congratulations.
- 31:59SPEAKER_03: I'm like, why are they congratulating you?
- 32:01SPEAKER_00: Huh.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: And he said, well, you don't know who my father is?
- 32:05SPEAKER_03: I'm like, no.
- 32:06SPEAKER_03: And he said, John Chaney.
- 32:07SPEAKER_03: I said, again, I do not
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: know who he is.
- 32:11SPEAKER_03: Well, he coaches at Temple, and he just won this conference.
- 32:17SPEAKER_03: I'm like, oh, okay, so why again are they congratulating you?
- 32:22SPEAKER_01: Ouch.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Ouch.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: We're just congratulating.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: That's how we met.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: So we ended up that night, I think there were three different venues.
- 32:31SPEAKER_00: I told her it was a family thing.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it was.
- 32:34SPEAKER_03: So there were three different venues I kept going to.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: I was with a friend of mine, my girlfriend, and he would be there.
- 32:42SPEAKER_03: Like that whole night, there were three different venues.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: So, you know, got his number and yeah, there you have it.
- 32:49SPEAKER_00: No, tell him the beginning of that one.
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: What?
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: You came over and kissed me.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: Oh, God.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Oh, the cheat.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: You've got to tell it all, don't you?
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: Didn't you do that?
- 33:00SPEAKER_00: I did, I did.
- 33:02SPEAKER_00: You forgot about the kiss.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: I forgot.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: So that's how we met.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: 88.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: By the way, so what year are we talking about?
- 33:07SPEAKER_03: 88.
- 33:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, we won the Atlantic 10 in 88.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Only the number one team in the country, and you didn't know about that.
- 33:14SPEAKER_03: I had no clue.
- 33:15SPEAKER_03: And I did a co-op at Temple in 85.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: And still, I just wasn't interested in it.
- 33:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I get it.
- 33:25SPEAKER_03: But then he took me to my first game following the season of 88-89,
- 33:32SPEAKER_03: and I fell in love with McGonagall, fell in love with the team.
- 33:36SPEAKER_03: It was great.
- 33:37SPEAKER_03: Great atmosphere.
- 33:38SPEAKER_03: I loved it.
- 33:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I got her involved in basketball.
- 33:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah,
- 33:44SPEAKER_03: I was hooked.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: She's been a follower ever since.
- 33:47SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 33:48SPEAKER_03: And then meeting his father for the first time, I went to the house.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: And he's like, he's in the basement.
- 33:56SPEAKER_03: And I looked down.
- 33:58SPEAKER_03: He's like, Dad, I want you to meet Maria.
- 34:01SPEAKER_03: Okay, I'm coming up.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: And he comes up.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: I'm like, hi, Mr. Chaney.
- 34:04SPEAKER_03: He's like, hey, you hungry?
- 34:05SPEAKER_03: He's got greens on the stove.
- 34:08SPEAKER_03: Come on, let me get you some food.
- 34:09SPEAKER_00: He always wants to
- 34:11SPEAKER_03: feed you.
- 34:12SPEAKER_00: If you come into his home...
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: You're getting fed.
- 34:16SPEAKER_00: Whether you want it
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: or not, you're going to eat.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: That was it.
- 34:21SPEAKER_03: But that was how I met him.
- 34:24SPEAKER_03: And his mom I had already met.
- 34:26SPEAKER_03: She and I clicked right away.
- 34:28SPEAKER_03: And he and I clicked right away.
- 34:31SPEAKER_03: It was really good meeting him.
- 34:33SPEAKER_03: He was hilarious.
- 34:35SPEAKER_02: So you got the sense then.
- 34:37SPEAKER_02: I'm sure you started to get the sense.
- 34:39SPEAKER_02: You met him like peak Temple basketball and started to get a sense of like.
- 34:43SPEAKER_01: The additional coach.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:47SPEAKER_02: You started to get a sense of how large in life he was.
- 34:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: You call him, and it's, I love hearing this, like you call him dad.
- 34:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 34:56SPEAKER_02: And if people didn't know any different,
- 34:57SPEAKER_02: they would have thought that he was your father and like that.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 35:00SPEAKER_02: Some people click with their father-in-law, some people don't.
- 35:02SPEAKER_02: You did.
- 35:03SPEAKER_02: What was he like as a father-in-law?
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: Oh man, did he get on me.
- 35:07SPEAKER_03: He was, he treated me like I was his own, believe me.
- 35:12SPEAKER_03: He was the sweetest man, biggest heart.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: He hated when I said that.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: Don't tell people I'm a puppy dog.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: I want them to think I'm mean.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: I'm like, no, but you're not.
- 35:23SPEAKER_03: I got to see the best of him.
- 35:27SPEAKER_03: If he saw or thought things were not going the way he wanted or the way it should,
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: he would definitely let us know, let me know.
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: He and I had our special conversations,
- 35:39SPEAKER_03: especially when I had John John and Yeah,
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: I'd get that good scolding on certain things.
- 35:48SPEAKER_03: You weren't a part of that one.
- 35:50SPEAKER_03: But, you know, he taught me, he gave me cooking lessons.
- 35:56SPEAKER_03: You know, we had our time in the kitchen where he, all right, we're going to cook this cabbage.
- 36:01SPEAKER_03: I'm not telling you, but we're going to cook this or turkey wings.
- 36:05SPEAKER_03: And, oh my gosh, it's turkey wings.
- 36:08SPEAKER_03: Just amazing stuff.
- 36:10SPEAKER_03: The time with him was just amazing.
- 36:12SPEAKER_03: Any time spent with him.
- 36:14SPEAKER_03: You always learned something.
- 36:16SPEAKER_03: Something would always come out of it.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Just curious,
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: for either one of you,
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: what's your best basketball memory
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: and perhaps your most heartbreaking Temple basketball memory
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: with your father leading the program?
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: So, you know, a little sweet and sour, if you will, right?
- 36:36SPEAKER_00: Well, I think one game I went to...
- 36:40SPEAKER_00: It was in North Carolina when he played Dean Smith.
- 36:44SPEAKER_00: And they were ranked number, Temple's ranked number one in the country.
- 36:49SPEAKER_00: And he beat Dean Smith at the house, at the Ding Dong.
- 36:55SPEAKER_00: And...
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: After the game, they interviewed Dean Smith, and he's talking with a cigarette in his hand.
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: He's talking about, we didn't prepare well for Temple.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: Now, my dad, he looked at it in a sense, well, we beat them because...
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: And what do you call it?
- 37:24SPEAKER_00: The zone defense, which nobody played the zone like Temple back in that era.
- 37:36SPEAKER_00: They had a match-up zone like no other.
- 37:39SPEAKER_00: And I used to see them practice that.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: And it was very difficult to watch them practice that.
- 37:46SPEAKER_00: But I got the gist of it when...
- 37:52SPEAKER_00: Sometimes when they play a 1-3-1 and they had the guy roaming in the back.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: And that's basically how you...
- 38:03SPEAKER_00: And then also sharing the player as they follow through in the lane.
- 38:12SPEAKER_00: They would get a lot of turnovers from that.
- 38:15SPEAKER_00: And it was incredible how that zone worked.
- 38:19SPEAKER_00: But
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: It was incredible how they won games because other teams turn the ball over
- 38:27SPEAKER_00: and they get fast break points off of that.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: I've seen that game many, many times.
- 38:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was one of my favorite games.
- 38:39SPEAKER_01: I think Temple was number one, had just become number one.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Carolina, I think, was number five.
- 38:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they were ranked.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: They were ranked the top five.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: And, you know,
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: if you're an ACC or a college basketball fan in general at that time,
- 38:53SPEAKER_01: you think, well, Temple's going to lose this game because they're not going to go
- 38:57SPEAKER_01: into North Carolina instead.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: And they're down five at the half.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: Lincoln sits out, right?
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: Two fouls.
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: They're down by five.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: Then they go on a 19-0 run to start the second half.
- 39:06SPEAKER_01: But I remember the quote from J.R. Reid, who was like their most heralded player.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, at that time.
- 39:12SPEAKER_01: And...
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: He said,
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: playing that zone,
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: it was like they had seven players out there
- 39:17SPEAKER_01: because they were just executing flawlessly.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: Carolina had 29 turnovers that game.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: I have, you know, I don't remember what I had for breakfast.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: That's a lot of turnovers.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: And it was just, and they killed him.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: It was just, it wasn't even close.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: And that's, I mean, I'm glad you picked that as a favorite member.
- 39:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was my, he flew me down for that game.
- 39:45SPEAKER_00: And I think it was me, it was my friend, one of my best friends came with me, Andy Johnson.
- 39:53SPEAKER_00: His father played for the Globetrotters.
- 39:57SPEAKER_00: He went to the game with me, and we had a great time in Carolina, you know.
- 40:04SPEAKER_01: There was a picture in the paper right after that game,
- 40:07SPEAKER_01: I just remember, of the Temple bench, but you can see behind it.
- 40:12SPEAKER_01: Now, you may have, perhaps, would you have been sitting behind
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: the bench?
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: I don't remember.
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: But Eddie Coe was sitting behind the bench.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: Eddie Coe was sitting behind the bench.
- 40:20SPEAKER_01: Eddie Coe was sitting behind it.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: Like two years earlier, I think.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: There's Eddie, because, you know, I was going to school...
- 40:27SPEAKER_01: When, you know,
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: Eddie Coe was coming up and then he was the star of that,
- 40:32SPEAKER_01: I think the star of that too,
- 40:34SPEAKER_01: that got destroyed by Kansas in the second round,
- 40:38SPEAKER_01: you know, like two years before that, you know.
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: It was cool to see and a lot of people came out and he was from North Carolina, I think.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: Anyway, so Maria, how about you?
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: I enjoyed the opening of the Apollo when Pepe hit that.
- 40:56SPEAKER_03: He hit that shot that won the games.
- 40:59SPEAKER_00: Who was that?
- 41:00SPEAKER_03: Was that the opening of the Apollo?
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: And he fell back.
- 41:04SPEAKER_03: He hit the shot, he fell back, and I believe we won.
- 41:06SPEAKER_03: I remember that.
- 41:08SPEAKER_03: I can't remember who we were playing.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: That was Michigan State.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: Michigan State, and we beat them, right?
- 41:14SPEAKER_01: We beat Michigan State.
- 41:18SPEAKER_03: And when Pepe hit that shot and fell backwards,
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: oh my gosh, I remember Jon Jon was only like six months old.
- 41:26SPEAKER_03: And, I mean, the place was packed.
- 41:29SPEAKER_03: It was packed.
- 41:30SPEAKER_01: So, was that the first season at the Apollo?
- 41:33SPEAKER_01: I feel like it was.
- 41:34SPEAKER_02: I think it was the first.
- 41:36SPEAKER_02: Wasn't that an opening?
- 41:37SPEAKER_02: The opening game was against Fresno State.
- 41:40SPEAKER_03: That's the Lenards.
- 41:42SPEAKER_03: And that was another game.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: That steals on, like, the first two or three possessions.
- 41:47SPEAKER_03: Anything against Turkey.
- 41:50SPEAKER_01: By the way, here's a little promo spot.
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: You should check out my conversation.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: I'm looking right at the camera.
- 41:56SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 41:57SPEAKER_01: Check out my conversation with Lenard Stewart where he tells us, he told me all about that game.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: It's a funny story where I had him on the Life Lessons Collective.
- 42:05SPEAKER_03: Oh, cool.
- 42:07SPEAKER_01: It's funny you're talking about your son, six months old at the time.
- 42:11SPEAKER_01: He was about six.
- 42:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: We got my son going to games early, too.
- 42:16SPEAKER_01: A-10 tournament at the convention center when he was just a few months old.
- 42:21SPEAKER_01: So he's about three.
- 42:25SPEAKER_01: We're at the Michigan State game.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: It's a big deal, I think.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: One of the teams was number five.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: The other team was number four.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: And we're going to lose.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: We're going to lose this game.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: It was terrible.
- 42:37SPEAKER_01: We're down 10 late.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: But they had this funny rule that just for that season, right,
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: preseason games,
- 42:44SPEAKER_01: if a defensive team, well, whatever team caused a jump ball, a held ball.
- 42:51SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: They got possession.
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: There was no alternating.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: There was no jump ball.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: And we had,
- 42:58SPEAKER_01: I could be wrong on this,
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: but I think Temple had like three of those in the last two minutes,
- 43:03SPEAKER_01: which resulted in Temple getting the ball back.
- 43:06SPEAKER_01: And then, you know, then they went on the foul shots at the end.
- 43:10SPEAKER_01: But, you know, I'm holding my son.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: He's like three years old.
- 43:13SPEAKER_01: He's totally into Temple at this point.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: You know, he can cheer, he can do all that.
- 43:17SPEAKER_01: So sometime during that comeback when it's getting...
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: Louder and louder and louder in the Apollo, because it was the Apollo at that
- 43:26SPEAKER_00: time, right?
- 43:27SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: He fell asleep on my shoulder.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's good.
- 43:32SPEAKER_01: And we're screaming, and me and my bio, I'm crying, you know, I'm going to win this game.
- 43:37SPEAKER_01: And my son is out, and I've never, never let him forget that to this day.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 43:42SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 43:44SPEAKER_00: That's a beautiful memory.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: Another game was...
- 43:48SPEAKER_00: I'm trying to think of another game that impressed me.
- 43:54SPEAKER_00: This was a game before they were...
- 43:56SPEAKER_00: I think they lost to Seton Hall in the tournament.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, gosh.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: It was one game before they got into the Final Four.
- 44:05SPEAKER_00: Now, he's been so close.
- 44:06SPEAKER_00: He's been there so many times, and he never got over the hump, and he...
- 44:11SPEAKER_00: They were supposed to beat Seton Hall that year,
- 44:13SPEAKER_00: and their point guard got hurt,
- 44:16SPEAKER_00: and this other guard off the bench came off the bench.
- 44:19SPEAKER_00: Ty Schein.
- 44:20SPEAKER_01: Ty Schein, seven three-pointers.
- 44:22SPEAKER_00: Seven three.
- 44:23SPEAKER_00: He came off, and he just lit them up, and nobody expected him to come in.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: My dad was like, who'd expect this kid to come in and just score so many points?
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: And he would talk about taking away the known.
- 44:40SPEAKER_00: Taking away the known, unknown.
- 44:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, dealing with the known.
- 44:44SPEAKER_03: Leave the unknown alone.
- 44:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:47SPEAKER_00: And he's been so close of getting into the Final Four so many times.
- 44:53SPEAKER_00: But that was one game he thought that he would be in the Final Four.
- 44:58SPEAKER_00: Because I think if he would have got past, what do you call it?
- 45:03SPEAKER_00: Seton Hall.
- 45:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Seton Hall.
- 45:06SPEAKER_00: He would have probably went all the way.
- 45:09SPEAKER_01: It was a strange year because I still blame Dick Girardi for this
- 45:16SPEAKER_01: because Dick Girardi wrote one of those two-page articles for the Daily News.
- 45:20SPEAKER_01: And I hope we can have Dick on at some point.
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: So I can personally assail him for this.
- 45:28SPEAKER_01: He wrote an article about,
- 45:30SPEAKER_01: here are the reasons Temple's going to win the national championship this year.
- 45:33SPEAKER_01: Mind you, we would have all been like, make the Final Four.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: I thought it was like the ultimate jinx.
- 45:41SPEAKER_01: But I will say this,
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: and that's a painful game that many of the people in
- 45:46SPEAKER_01: the Temple fan community don't like to talk about, right?
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: But Temple did shoot 6 of 18 from the foul line in that game.
- 45:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: You're not going to beat anybody.
- 45:59SPEAKER_00: You're shooting better like that.
- 46:00SPEAKER_00: 6 of 18.
- 46:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: At the foul line?
- 46:04SPEAKER_02: That's tough.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: John, were you covering that game?
- 46:06SPEAKER_02: I was not covering that game.
- 46:09SPEAKER_02: I also missed that Michigan State game because I was working in South Jersey
- 46:12SPEAKER_02: at my first newspaper job.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: I was covering a high school game.
- 46:16SPEAKER_02: Soccer State Championship game.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: And so somebody called me and said, well, your alma mater just knocked off Michigan State.
- 46:21SPEAKER_02: And again, this was before smartphones.
- 46:23SPEAKER_02: And so I missed that.
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: But yeah,
- 46:25SPEAKER_02: the Seton Hall loss was almost like the equivalent of the Rondé Barber play
- 46:30SPEAKER_02: if you're an Eagles fan.
- 46:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 46:33SPEAKER_02: I called it the Ryan Kirkring game now.
- 46:35SPEAKER_01: Tell us a little bit about that soccer game.
- 46:37SPEAKER_01: Tell us a little bit about that soccer game.
- 46:39SPEAKER_02: Delcy Regional High School and someone else that are playing.
- 46:43SPEAKER_02: I would love to ask the two of you about What coach was like when he came home to decompress?
- 46:50SPEAKER_02: Because he was like, you know, again, larger than life, so charismatic.
- 46:55SPEAKER_02: Everybody wanted a piece of him after the game, even after he talked to the press.
- 46:59SPEAKER_02: And he was so giving of his time and so loving.
- 47:02SPEAKER_02: He was like a lead singer after a concert.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: And sometimes I would see him kind of like just slump into his chair in the office
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: and he would talk to everybody.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: What was he like when he came home?
- 47:13SPEAKER_02: How did he unplugged?
- 47:16SPEAKER_03: Well, is it after a loss or after a
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: win?
- 47:21SPEAKER_03: After a loss, we didn't, I don't, it was very rare that we would go to the house after a loss.
- 47:28SPEAKER_00: Well, I would go to the house.
- 47:30SPEAKER_00: I would go with a loss or more.
- 47:32SPEAKER_00: I'd stay back with John John.
- 47:33SPEAKER_03: But after a loss,
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: so I don't know, I remember the game that he lost, but John John was about five.
- 47:45SPEAKER_03: And you didn't go to the game, you had to work.
- 47:47SPEAKER_03: And John John, I want to go see Grandpa.
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: I want to see Papa.
- 47:51SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 47:52SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I don't know.
- 47:54SPEAKER_03: I go back there to the office.
- 47:55SPEAKER_03: So we took him to the office and he peeked his head in.
- 48:01SPEAKER_03: He said, Papa.
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: And I'm sitting there going, oh gosh.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: Because he was, yeah, clearly he was upset.
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: But as soon as he saw John John, he just lit up.
- 48:10SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: Gave him a hug, you know, he was really good.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's something he really needed.
- 48:15SPEAKER_03: When he would be home, well,
- 48:18SPEAKER_03: first he would probably go and get something to eat,
- 48:21SPEAKER_03: get some food before, and we'd be sitting there waiting for him to get home.
- 48:26SPEAKER_03: But he was,
- 48:28SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: he would come in the house and he would just,
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: sometimes he would talk about it, and sometimes he wouldn't.
- 48:35SPEAKER_03: It would depend.
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: It would depend, right, John?
- 48:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it would depend.
- 48:38SPEAKER_03: You would have more conversations about the game with him than
- 48:41SPEAKER_00: I would.
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he would tell me what went wrong in certain games,
- 48:51SPEAKER_00: and he wouldn't tell me what he could have done better,
- 48:57SPEAKER_00: but he always talked about the mistakes that he made, the team made, and...
- 49:06SPEAKER_00: But then he'll get off the subject and he'll just start cooking.
- 49:09SPEAKER_00: And he'll put a game on and watch college games.
- 49:17SPEAKER_00: He wouldn't talk much about it after a while.
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, cooking would be it.
- 49:20SPEAKER_03: Cooking would be his outlet.
- 49:22SPEAKER_03: So he would cook.
- 49:29SPEAKER_02: I want to honor your mother's memory as well.
- 49:32SPEAKER_02: You've already said that she wasn't as much of the disciplinarian,
- 49:35SPEAKER_02: but how did they work through life together?
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: How did she keep him, or did she keep him on his toes?
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: I'd just love to learn more about the dynamic.
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: Well, my mother,
- 49:48SPEAKER_00: she would say,
- 49:49SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's things that... Well, you would know what he would say that...
- 49:59SPEAKER_00: What was the thing that happened with the Calipari?
- 50:04SPEAKER_00: What was the, about the goons?
- 50:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, St. Charles.
- 50:09SPEAKER_00: St. Charles, yeah.
- 50:11SPEAKER_00: And my mom would say, you know better, you know better, Chaney.
- 50:15SPEAKER_00: She would call him Chaney.
- 50:16SPEAKER_00: She always called my dad Chaney.
- 50:19SPEAKER_00: You would know better.
- 50:20SPEAKER_00: He said, you should know better.
- 50:22SPEAKER_00: She would scold him.
- 50:24SPEAKER_00: Yes, she would.
- 50:26SPEAKER_03: She would make it known.
- 50:28SPEAKER_00: He wouldn't say nothing to my mom after that.
- 50:30SPEAKER_00: I mean, he'd just listen.
- 50:33SPEAKER_00: He would just listen.
- 50:35SPEAKER_00: He wouldn't walk away.
- 50:36SPEAKER_00: He would listen to what she had to say.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: Smart move.
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 50:39SPEAKER_00: Smart move.
- 50:40SPEAKER_03: And your mom was a physician.
- 50:43SPEAKER_00: She'll say, you know better than that.
- 50:47SPEAKER_00: Why would you say that?
- 50:48SPEAKER_00: Why would you do this or that?
- 50:50SPEAKER_00: I mean, anytime he says something that was out in the papers or whatever,
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: She would say something.
- 51:00SPEAKER_00: You know better than that.
- 51:01SPEAKER_00: She would.
- 51:02SPEAKER_00: That's great.
- 51:04SPEAKER_03: She was always watching the games at home, listening to it on the radio.
- 51:09SPEAKER_03: Oh, my gosh.
- 51:10SPEAKER_03: She would come to the games a lot, too.
- 51:11SPEAKER_03: Why would you say something like that?
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: What
- 51:14SPEAKER_00: was that?
- 51:15SPEAKER_00: She said, why would you say something like that?
- 51:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:20SPEAKER_00: She'll put in those words, you know better than that.
- 51:25SPEAKER_01: Was there a time that you can recall where he had an answer for it or did he know
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: in those moments?
- 51:30SPEAKER_01: Just to be quiet.
- 51:32SPEAKER_00: Just to be quiet.
- 51:35SPEAKER_00: My mother was right.
- 51:36SPEAKER_00: I'm like, okay.
- 51:38SPEAKER_00: That's one time he would listen.
- 51:40SPEAKER_00: He would listen to my mother when she would speak out on things like that.
- 51:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 51:48SPEAKER_01: So you mentioned just briefly you talked about Calipari leading into talking about St. Joe's.
- 51:56SPEAKER_01: What are your recollections about that incident, which is, of course, infamous?
- 52:02SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 52:03SPEAKER_00: I think a situation at hand on that was I think my dad got caught up in the moment
- 52:10SPEAKER_00: after he found out that Calipari was talking to the refs after the game.
- 52:16SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 52:19SPEAKER_00: He would have never known because my niece was at the game.
- 52:22SPEAKER_00: This was up in Boston.
- 52:24SPEAKER_00: This was up when they were playing UMass.
- 52:28SPEAKER_00: My niece was at the game, and she yelled to my grandpa, Grandpa Calipari is talking to the rest.
- 52:39SPEAKER_00: And if she would have never said that to him,
- 52:43SPEAKER_00: then I don't think he would have ever went off and got upset.
- 52:50SPEAKER_00: But my pop was really trying to explain,
- 52:52SPEAKER_00: my dad was really trying to explain that when Calpray was talking to the rest,
- 52:56SPEAKER_00: my dad felt that he was trying to get,
- 52:58SPEAKER_00: because they were supposed to play at Temple the following week or two weeks
- 53:02SPEAKER_00: or whatever.
- 53:04SPEAKER_00: So he was trying to get an edge as far as talking to the rest.
- 53:10SPEAKER_00: And my dad just, he got upset and said that your kids played very well.
- 53:18SPEAKER_00: Played very well, excellent.
- 53:22SPEAKER_00: And you had the audacity to talk to the refs.
- 53:27SPEAKER_00: My dad got upset about him talking to the refs.
- 53:31SPEAKER_00: And that's when he exploded a little bit.
- 53:37SPEAKER_00: And then I found Calipari.
- 53:40SPEAKER_00: Calipari was calling my dad quite a few times later during...
- 53:47SPEAKER_00: The time my dad was coaching, and they became pretty good friends.
- 53:51SPEAKER_00: And
- 53:54SPEAKER_00: even to a point where Cal probably wanted my dad to induct him into the Hall of Fame.
- 54:00SPEAKER_00: A lot of people didn't know that.
- 54:04SPEAKER_00: And he spoke at my dad's funeral, which he did quite elegantly.
- 54:09SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 54:10SPEAKER_00: He captured a lot of what my dad did at Temple as far as trying to copy his coaching
- 54:21SPEAKER_00: as far as playing tough teams.
- 54:25SPEAKER_00: My dad would set up games where he would play Carolina or Duke.
- 54:33SPEAKER_00: I'll play you twice at your place if you can play once at my place.
- 54:37SPEAKER_00: That was the...
- 54:39SPEAKER_00: Contract he tries to set up of playing top-notch teams.
- 54:44SPEAKER_00: Toughen your team up.
- 54:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah, toughen your team.
- 54:46SPEAKER_00: He wanted to play the toughest teams, the top 20 teams in the country.
- 54:52SPEAKER_00: So he would play Duke twice or whatever or Carolina.
- 54:59SPEAKER_00: There were certain teams that wouldn't want to play him.
- 55:02SPEAKER_00: I'm not going to mention I know a few teams.
- 55:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's not do that.
- 55:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 55:07SPEAKER_00: But there was teams that he played.
- 55:10SPEAKER_00: Michigan State he played twice.
- 55:13SPEAKER_00: He played a lot of tough teams.
- 55:16SPEAKER_00: And that made his team better.
- 55:19SPEAKER_00: So Calipari learned, I think he learned that from my dad.
- 55:23SPEAKER_00: And also got TV rights.
- 55:27SPEAKER_00: So you're looking at, you're playing teams that are top-notch teams.
- 55:31SPEAKER_00: You're never going to be on TV.
- 55:32SPEAKER_00: They don't want to see that on TV.
- 55:35SPEAKER_00: So...
- 55:37SPEAKER_00: Playing Michigan State or Duke or Carolina,
- 55:43SPEAKER_00: that brings a lot of revenue into the school as well.
- 55:46SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 55:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 55:47SPEAKER_01: It's interesting.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: You're talking about the revenue piece and playing teams twice on the road.
- 55:53SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: It's off topic, but this is stuff that the landscape has changed so much now.
- 56:00SPEAKER_01: We're just not...
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, you talked to...
- 56:04SPEAKER_01: You talk to Adam all the time, right?
- 56:07SPEAKER_01: It is more and more difficult to schedule.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: It is harder.
- 56:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it is harder.
- 56:14SPEAKER_02: With budgets,
- 56:15SPEAKER_02: some teams look at Temple now as like,
- 56:19SPEAKER_02: if we beat them, we were supposed to beat them.
- 56:21SPEAKER_02: If we lose to them, it's a bad thing.
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: And they're in this kind of middle ground region.
- 56:27SPEAKER_02: It's harder for teams to schedule the way,
- 56:30SPEAKER_02: harder for Adam to schedule the way that your father was scheduled.
- 56:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:34SPEAKER_03: A lot of teams say no.
- 56:36SPEAKER_03: They just don't want to do it.
- 56:37SPEAKER_00: But that's what Calipari was doing.
- 56:40SPEAKER_00: He wanted to schedule tough teams.
- 56:44SPEAKER_00: The same formula my dad was using, he wanted to do that with his team at UMass.
- 56:50SPEAKER_00: And that's what he did.
- 56:51SPEAKER_00: He started playing a lot of teams on,
- 56:55SPEAKER_00: trying to get the teams that you know you can be on TV, that you would be on TV.
- 57:01SPEAKER_00: You'll get the audience as well as the ratings.
- 57:07SPEAKER_02: I remember, and correct me if I'm wrong on this, when...
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: When the situation happened in St.
- 57:12SPEAKER_02: Joe's and people, you know, your father admitted, hey, this shouldn't happen.
- 57:16SPEAKER_02: He apologized.
- 57:17SPEAKER_02: But people were piling on and piling on.
- 57:19SPEAKER_02: And one of the people who defended him was John Calipari.
- 57:23SPEAKER_02: And I was always struck by that.
- 57:24SPEAKER_02: And I think, why do you think that was?
- 57:26SPEAKER_02: Was it because he just respected how honest your father was?
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: Because the respect, it was like a human relationship.
- 57:32SPEAKER_02: I'm putting this behind me.
- 57:33SPEAKER_02: But I always got the sense that he just respected how real your father was.
- 57:37SPEAKER_02: Did we have the right read on it?
- 57:39SPEAKER_00: Yes, I think so.
- 57:40SPEAKER_00: It was pure respect.
- 57:42SPEAKER_03: I met Calipari before I met him through your dad and you at a funeral for one
- 57:51SPEAKER_03: of Drexel's,
- 57:53SPEAKER_03: Bruiser Flint's,
- 57:57SPEAKER_03: one of his players, his father and I worked together at Penn.
- 58:02SPEAKER_03: And he passed away.
- 58:03SPEAKER_03: So I'm at this funeral.
- 58:04SPEAKER_03: And then here's Calipari right in front of me with Bruiser.
- 58:08SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, oh, this is my chance.
- 58:11SPEAKER_03: So I went up and said hi to Coach Bruiser.
- 58:14SPEAKER_03: And then I introduced myself to Calipari.
- 58:17SPEAKER_03: And he said, wait a minute, Chaney?
- 58:20SPEAKER_03: I said, not many people know.
- 58:25SPEAKER_03: He's like.
- 58:27SPEAKER_03: Okay, you're married to John?
- 58:29SPEAKER_03: I was like, yes.
- 58:30SPEAKER_03: So we started talking.
- 58:32SPEAKER_03: He said, I love him.
- 58:33SPEAKER_03: I have the utmost respect for your father-in-law.
- 58:36SPEAKER_03: He just talked and talked.
- 58:38SPEAKER_03: I mean, it was just wonderful to hear that from him.
- 58:41SPEAKER_03: And this was before the incident.
- 58:45SPEAKER_03: So...
- 58:46SPEAKER_03: I mean, it just meant so much to hear that because I know how much,
- 58:49SPEAKER_03: you know, UMass and Temple, that was like a big rivalry, you know.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: It was the rivalry.
- 58:56SPEAKER_03: He really, he respected your father.
- 58:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he did.
- 58:59SPEAKER_00: He respected him.
- 59:01SPEAKER_00: He did.
- 59:01SPEAKER_03: No matter what else had happened, after, before, whatever, you know, he respected the man.
- 59:08SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 59:09SPEAKER_03: He respected the man.
- 59:10SPEAKER_00: And I think my dad would have, he respected Cal Perry as well.
- 59:15SPEAKER_00: He did.
- 59:16SPEAKER_00: And he wanted to be there for him when he was inducted to the Hall of Fame,
- 59:24SPEAKER_00: but he was ill at the time.
- 59:27SPEAKER_03: Couldn't travel.
- 59:28SPEAKER_00: And he couldn't travel.
- 59:31SPEAKER_00: So that's the reason why he couldn't do it for him.
- 59:35SPEAKER_00: But I've been over to the house a couple times,
- 59:39SPEAKER_00: and I've heard him talk, him and Kyle Pryor talking on the phone.
- 59:43SPEAKER_00: You know, and they're laughing or whatever.
- 59:47SPEAKER_00: John Thompson, another one, he talking on the phone.
- 59:50SPEAKER_00: He was pretty close with John Thompson as well.
- 59:55SPEAKER_00: You know.
- 59:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 59:58SPEAKER_00: I know there was a time when my dad was after Allen Iverson.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_00: And I think it came down to Temple and Georgetown.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_00: And as soon as my father found out that Allen Iverson was thinking about Georgetown,
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_00: he jumped out of the race because he had so much respect for John Thompson.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_00: But he was...
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_00: There's a lot,
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_00: there was some players,
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_00: there was a player in Atlantic City that my dad was after too.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_00: He ended up going to UMass.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_00: What's the guy?
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_00: Lou Ruff.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_00: Lou Ruff.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_00: So, you know, it's... Rasheed.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_00: he's got out of the,
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_00: a lot of times he's got out of the,
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_00: The race for some of those players,
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_00: I think it was another player that went to Syracuse.
- 1:01:03SPEAKER_00: He tried to get him, but he ended up going to Syracuse.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_00: What's the point guard?
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_01: Not Douglas.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: Huh?
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_01: Sherman Douglas?
- 1:01:11SPEAKER_01: Sherman Douglas.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_01: Where was it later than that?
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_00: Sherman Douglas.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_01: Sherman Douglas was the point guard on their team that...
- 1:01:21SPEAKER_01: Was that the team that lost to Keith Smart?
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_00: I think so, yeah.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_00: I was thinking.
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: Was that Sherman?
- 1:01:26SPEAKER_00: I think it was.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_00: Was it Sherman Douglas?
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_00: He was the point guard that they can handle and dribble.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_00: Or Pearl.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_00: Pearl, yeah.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_00: Pearl Washington.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_00: Pearl Washington.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:37SPEAKER_00: My dad was after him.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_00: He ended up going to...
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_00: He ended up going to Syracuse.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_01: I heard he also went after Billy Donovan,
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_00: right?
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_00: Billy Donovan was my dad's first recruit.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_00: That was his first recruit.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_00: He was up there watching him play.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_00: What was that, up in Boston?
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_00: What was he playing in Boston, right?
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_00: It was such a big story in the 2001 run.
- 1:02:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_00: And he was after him.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_00: He offered him a scholarship because that was my dad's first year.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_00: He didn't have a scholarship to give him.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_00: And he said,
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_00: if you can go pay your way the first year,
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_00: he said, I would give you a scholarship the following year.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_00: And...
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_00: The coach from Connecticut ended up grabbing him
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_00: because they were all asking my dad, who are you here to see?
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_00: A lot of coaches were asking each other, who are you here to see?
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_00: And my dad said, I'm here to see Billy Donovan.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_00: And what's the end up getting him?
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_00: Bettino at Providence.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: Bettino.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_00: Ended up getting Providence.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_00: Ended up taking him.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_00: But that was my dad's first recruit.
- 1:02:57SPEAKER_00: He told me that story.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_02: The story of him bowing out of it once he knew
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_02: that John Thompson was recruiting Allen Iverson,
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: I mean, it would never happen today.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_02: All the coaches that will love each other,
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_02: but they'll still negatively recruit against each other.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_02: And that's just part of it.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_02: The fact that your father bowed out of it for John Thompson is pretty amazing.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that's the respect he had for John Thompson.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_00: And probably wouldn't happen today at this era.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_00: No.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_00: No way.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_01: Everything's so big.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_01: The money is crazy.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_01: The opportunities for both the players and coaches.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just such a different game now in those respects.
- 1:03:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_01: This just cracked me up.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_01: When you were talking, I mean,
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_01: just in terms of talking to Coach Thompson on the phone and whatnot,
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: I've always noted that your voice is so similar to your father's.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_01: I was wondering, was there a time that you ever, like, pranked somebody who called on the phone?
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_01: Can it be your father?
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 1:04:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:04:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know what?
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_00: A lot of people mention that to me, that I sound like my dad.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_00: And I never did a prank on anybody.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_00: But I'm glad you brought that to my attention.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_00: I might have to do that.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_00: It's hard to do that because he passed away.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, no, we're not doing
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_02: that.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_02: You talked about the cookouts when you were younger.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_02: Were there ever like some other unexpected house guests?
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_02: You come over to the house and you're like,
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_02: oh my God, I can't believe this person is just like sitting in our living room.
- 1:05:01SPEAKER_00: Well, I remember one time I went to a,
- 1:05:04SPEAKER_00: my dad brought me to a Baker League game up in Bellfield Recreation Center.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_00: And me and a buddy of mine, Sidney Roundtree, We were getting out of the car.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_00: Wilt Chamberlain pulled up,
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_00: and he goes over and he says to me and to my buddy,
- 1:05:23SPEAKER_00: go grab my bags out of the trunk.
- 1:05:25SPEAKER_00: So we grab his bags out of the trunk, and then we take him into the gym.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_00: But that was something to see, meeting Wilt Chamberlain.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_03: What about at the house?
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_03: Anybody?
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_00: Oh, but at the house?
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_00: Oh.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_00: Let's see, the people that came here at the house.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_00: Well, I told you this.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:05:52SPEAKER_00: You had a lot of the sixer players.
- 1:05:55SPEAKER_00: My dad was pretty close with Hal Greer and Chet Walker.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_00: Archie Clark.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_00: Remember Archie Clark was at the house?
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_00: Billy Cunningham, he was close.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_00: I'm
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_00: trying to think of
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_00: who else.
- 1:06:20SPEAKER_01: Classic Sixers players.
- 1:06:22SPEAKER_00: Classic Sixers players, yeah.
- 1:06:25SPEAKER_03: One time, he took myself, my niece, Rashida, to a Sixers game.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_03: Eddie was in town, Eddie Jones, the Lakers were in town to play the Sixers.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_03: It was Eddie against Aaron.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 1:06:40SPEAKER_03: So he took us to the game.
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_03: I was pregnant with John.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_03: I'll never forget this.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_03: And we're walking to our seats, and here comes this tall man.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_03: I looked up.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_03: I said, oh, that's Dr. J.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_03: He comes up, and he hugs your dad, and he wouldn't let him go.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_03: It was like just this hug that lasted forever.
- 1:07:05SPEAKER_03: And I was just sitting there going, Wow, he's so tall.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_03: But this was like the best thing, you know?
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_03: You could tell they really, he was like, oh man, it's so good to see you on both ends, you know?
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_03: And it was just that, that was a great moment.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_03: That was a great moment.
- 1:07:22SPEAKER_03: I was just like, okay.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_03: And then at the Hall of Fame with Indiana,
- 1:07:31SPEAKER_03: Indiana coach.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: Bob Knight.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: Bobby Knight.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, Bobby Knight.
- 1:07:36SPEAKER_03: And Dr. J and Dad.
- 1:07:38SPEAKER_03: I have to find that picture.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_00: What about the time we were all in the elevator with Bobby Knight?
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_03: Oh my God.
- 1:07:45SPEAKER_00: This was the Hall of Fame.
- 1:07:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's what I'm talking about.
- 1:07:49SPEAKER_03: But we were all in Moses.
- 1:07:51SPEAKER_00: Moses Malone.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_00: I met Moses in the elevator and also at the Hall of Fame.
- 1:07:57SPEAKER_00: Bobby Knight I met in the Hall of Fame as well.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_00: Mike Krzyzewski and his family.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_03: That was great.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_00: I met
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_03: at the Hall of
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_00: Fame.
- 1:08:09SPEAKER_01: So, just shifting gears a little bit,
- 1:08:11SPEAKER_01: I'm wondering about, you know, your dad had many notable assistants.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know a lot about the assistants he had at Chaney,
- 1:08:20SPEAKER_01: but thanks to this thing called the Internet,
- 1:08:24SPEAKER_01: I pulled up names like Anthony Penny, Chuck Songster, and...
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_01: And, of course, the Temple.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_01: Jim Maloney, Jay Norman, Dean Dimopoulos, Nate Blackwell, Dan Leibovitz, Bill L.B., Mark Macon.
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:08:39SPEAKER_01: What can you tell us about your experiences with the assistants and
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_01: about your dad's relationship with them?
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_01: And that's a big question because I just gave you a lot of names.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: But, like,
- 1:08:52SPEAKER_01: if you go back to the Chaney days,
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_01: do you have any, did you have relationships with them?
- 1:08:58SPEAKER_01: You know, because...
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_03: Before my time.
- 1:09:00SPEAKER_01: These were the co-workers, so to speak, right?
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_00: Jim Maloney, I think Jim Maloney was my dad's probably favorite assistant.
- 1:09:13SPEAKER_00: His brother.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_03: He called him his brother.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_00: His brother.
- 1:09:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, my homie.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_00: He liked Nate Blackwell.
- 1:09:25SPEAKER_00: He liked, who was the other guy?
- 1:09:28SPEAKER_03: Well, he liked them all.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he liked them all.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_00: But Dr. Penny was his... Dr. Penny was one of
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_03: his...
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_03: He wasn't a coach, though, was he?
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_03: Dr. Penny wasn't a coach, was he?
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_01: He was just a friend.
- 1:09:39SPEAKER_01: How'd he get in there?
- 1:09:42SPEAKER_03: They were friends from when he was young.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_00: That's probably one of his oldest friends.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh, yes.
- 1:09:51SPEAKER_00: Because they've known each other for such a long time.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_03: Since they were young.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_03: Living in South Philly with the Broccoli Rob sandwich.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:10:00SPEAKER_00: He's one of his closest friends.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_01: When he came in at Temple, he retained Jim Maloney.
- 1:10:10SPEAKER_01: He retained Jane Norman, if I'm not mistaken.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_00: I think they were both assistant coaches
- 1:10:15SPEAKER_01: previously.
- 1:10:16SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:10:18SPEAKER_01: Under Don Casey.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: Casey.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_01: But they became important pieces of those early years, obviously.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:10:27SPEAKER_01: Then brought in Nate.
- 1:10:29SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_01: After Nate had graduated,
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_01: so on and so forth,
- 1:10:33SPEAKER_01: and then extending through to Dan Leibovitz,
- 1:10:36SPEAKER_01: and then bringing in Coach Ellerbe from Gratz, and bringing Mark Macon back.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:10:43SPEAKER_01: So what are some of your recollections of interacting with
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_00: Jay was one of my dads.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_00: He played cards with him, too.
- 1:10:53SPEAKER_00: So he came over the house quite a few times.
- 1:10:56SPEAKER_00: He worked with the centers and the forwards, rebounding.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_00: He handled the big men when he was coaching.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:11:09SPEAKER_01: And for those listening out there who don't know about Jay Norman, I mean,
- 1:11:14SPEAKER_01: he was a 6'3",
- 1:11:16SPEAKER_01: correct me if I'm wrong,
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_01: rebounding machine on the teams that made,
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_01: the Temple teams that made the 5'4", in the 50s.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_01: To be 6'3", I mean, that's, you know, they talk about Charles Barkley as a rebounding machine.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_01: Jay Norman was that at Temple.
- 1:11:31SPEAKER_01: Mm-hmm.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_01: Big guys, right?
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 1:11:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11:44SPEAKER_00: He works the big guys rebounding and block shots and stuff like that.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_03: And Ellery was another very good friend.
- 1:11:54SPEAKER_00: Ellery was a very good coach.
- 1:11:57SPEAKER_00: He had him when he was at,
- 1:12:00SPEAKER_00: Ellery was coaching at Gratz and he was coaching Aaron McKee and Rasheed Wallace
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: and those guys.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_00: So he wanted to bring them up.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_00: And help his players with the guards.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_00: He handled a lot of the guards.
- 1:12:17SPEAKER_00: Guard play.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_00: And also rebounding.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_00: Because Jay, I think Jay left.
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_00: Jay left way after LB came.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_00: What is it?
- 1:12:32SPEAKER_00: Are you talking about Leibovitz?
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_00: Dan?
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_00: Daddy loved Leverwitz, and he was very close with Leverwitz's father.
- 1:12:43SPEAKER_00: They were very, very close.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_00: And Leverwitz wanted to learn how to coach,
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_00: so he was with my dad for a while, and he was working for free for a while.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_00: My dad decided to bring him on as a coach.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_00: Gave him a salary.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_00: But he was working for free at one time.
- 1:13:07SPEAKER_00: He was coaching for free.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_00: Dean DeMont.
- 1:13:11SPEAKER_00: Let's talk about Dean.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_01: Also moved into working with the big guys, right?
- 1:13:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Dean worked with big guys.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_00: He worked with the guards as well, but mostly with the big guys.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_00: He handled pretty much hand-off work.
- 1:13:27SPEAKER_00: A lot of the other things like transportation and making sure kids were at practice
- 1:13:35SPEAKER_00: on time and stuff like that.
- 1:13:38SPEAKER_01: So no conversation
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_00: of... Well, I had a personal conversation.
- 1:13:45SPEAKER_00: One time I...
- 1:13:48SPEAKER_00: I feel like a good story is coming.
- 1:13:50SPEAKER_00: One time I had a parking ticket.
- 1:13:53SPEAKER_03: I don't know if we need to tell any of this.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_00: Well, I can tell the story.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_00: We can always cut this out.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_00: I had a parking ticket, and the parking ticket, I let it build up to about $200 or something.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 1:14:11SPEAKER_00: And I was calling my dad because they confiscated my car.
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_00: And, well, no, they put a boot on my car.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_03: Boot.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_00: And...
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_00: I called my dad to tell him about it.
- 1:14:27SPEAKER_00: And Dean picked up the phone.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_00: He's like, well, dad, your father's busy right now.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_00: What can I do?
- 1:14:31SPEAKER_00: I said, well, I got to speak to him right away.
- 1:14:33SPEAKER_00: And he said, well, I can handle it.
- 1:14:34SPEAKER_00: I can take care of it.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_00: I said, what do you need?
- 1:14:37SPEAKER_00: And I explained to Dean that I got a boot on my car.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_00: He said, where's the car?
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_00: He came down.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_00: He paid the bill and got my car back.
- 1:14:48SPEAKER_00: And my dad never found out.
- 1:14:49SPEAKER_03: Never found out.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_03: Because if Dad would have answered that phone,
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_03: it would have been, then I guess you got to take care of it, click.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_03: It would not have been him coming down to pay any bill.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_00: He came to the rescue.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_03: And never told Dad.
- 1:15:07SPEAKER_00: And never told Dad about it.
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_01: Do not
- 1:15:11SPEAKER_00: cut that out.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_00: Do not.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_01: You say do not cut
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_03: that out.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_03: No.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_03: And I tried to pay him
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_00: back, and he was like.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_03: He wouldn't let him.
- 1:15:18SPEAKER_00: He wouldn't let me pay him back.
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_03: He wouldn't do it.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_01: That's so funny.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_01: What I was also alluding to is,
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_01: I don't think there's a,
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_01: you can have a conversation about people who had an impact on the temple program
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_01: without talking about the late John DeSangro.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_01: Oh, the man.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_03: And I'm just wondering what
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_01: your experiences with him.
- 1:15:45SPEAKER_03: John was amazing.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_03: He would, the things he would do For that man and that team, there's nothing he wouldn't do.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_03: There was nothing he wouldn't do.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_03: Ask John.
- 1:16:00SPEAKER_03: Ask John.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_03: Dad, ask John.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_03: John can get it done.
- 1:16:04SPEAKER_03: Everything was... Just ask John.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_03: He can do it.
- 1:16:08SPEAKER_03: And don't mess with John, because that would be the wrath of Coach Chaney.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_03: That was his right hand.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_03: Ying and yang.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_03: They...
- 1:16:18SPEAKER_00: He was his right-hand man.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_03: He would pretty
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_00: much take care of everything.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_00: And I would see, there's times I would come to the office and he's running around like a roadie.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, where are you going?
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_00: He's like, I gotta take care of this.
- 1:16:36SPEAKER_00: He had to do so much stuff for my dad.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_03: On the road, the same thing.
- 1:16:39SPEAKER_00: He's making sure everything was done right.
- 1:16:44SPEAKER_00: Whether it was tickets to get to To where they had to go, kids on time, kids being late.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_00: He would handle all the necessities of that.
- 1:16:55SPEAKER_03: And if there were any hitches, Dad would never know.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_03: If anything was going wrong,
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_03: going south, Dad would not know because he would fix it no matter what.
- 1:17:08SPEAKER_03: He was a fixer-upper.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_03: He would fix things.
- 1:17:11SPEAKER_03: He was just an amazing person and a beautiful person inside and out.
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he was great.
- 1:17:16SPEAKER_00: He was a great guy.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_00: Personally, he was a great guy, too.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_00: He was always nice to me.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_00: Oh, you need anything?
- 1:17:24SPEAKER_00: You always ask me, Dad, you need anything?
- 1:17:27SPEAKER_00: But he was always on the run, taking care of things my dad needed taken care of.
- 1:17:34SPEAKER_00: And I didn't have to worry.
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: I mean,
- 1:17:37SPEAKER_00: my dad didn't have to worry about anything because he would pretty much take care
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_00: of everything,
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_02: you know.
- 1:17:45SPEAKER_02: How involved were the two of you in any conversations
- 1:17:50SPEAKER_02: when he started even contemplating retirement?
- 1:17:54SPEAKER_02: Did he ever come to the two of you and say, I'm thinking about it?
- 1:17:59SPEAKER_03: I found out working at Penn,
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_03: somebody called me, your father-in-law's on TV here talking about he's retiring.
- 1:18:09SPEAKER_03: I was like, what?
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_03: And I had no idea.
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_03: So literally- Literally had no clue.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_03: No clue.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_03: I was like, you've got to be kidding me.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_03: I was like, he's retiring today, like right now.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_03: And I, you know, we switched it on in the conference room and I'm like, wow.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_03: And I called John.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_03: You didn't know.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_00: No, I didn't know.
- 1:18:32SPEAKER_03: I mean- Mom knew, but you didn't know.
- 1:18:35SPEAKER_03: Now I don't know if Mom knew.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_00: I know he's always talked about-
- 1:18:38SPEAKER_03: He talked about.
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_00: Talked about it, saying that-
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_00: That he would ride out to the blue sunset.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_00: Like Frank Sinatra.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_00: Frank Sinatra was his favorite.
- 1:18:50SPEAKER_00: He had all Frank Sinatra's songs.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 1:18:54SPEAKER_00: And he would talk about when he was going to leave, he was going to ride out to the sunset.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_03: Set him up, Joe.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_03: Set him up, Joe.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_03: Excuse me while I disappeared.
- 1:19:06SPEAKER_00: While I disappeared.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_00: I think that's one of the things he said when he was dead.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_00: He did.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_00: That's exactly why it was brilliant.
- 1:19:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_02: I'm a Sinatra fan.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_02: I wrote about that in a story that I wrote for the alumni magazine.
- 1:19:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:18SPEAKER_02: They came to me and said, do you want to write this story?
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_02: I said, sure.
- 1:19:20SPEAKER_02: Your dad was amazing for that story.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 1:19:22SPEAKER_02: But like when he said that in his retirement press conference,
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, people were just welling up.
- 1:19:27SPEAKER_02: And if you loved Sinatra and you loved him, you're like, this doesn't get any better.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:31SPEAKER_02: Make you want to cry.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_02: He used to say, I'm going to sit under a tree and eat peanuts and tell lies.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_02: And tell lies.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_02: And tell lies.
- 1:19:38SPEAKER_02: Drink beer and tell lies.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_03: He was playing dance.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_03: Eat peanuts, drink beer, and tell lies.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, even.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:19:51SPEAKER_00: He likes his beer, too.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_00: He drinks some beer every now and then.
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_00: I would go get him a case.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_00: A St. Pauli girl.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_03: That was his
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_00: favorite.
- 1:20:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was one of his favorites.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_00: St. Pauli girls.
- 1:20:03SPEAKER_00: You never forget your first girl.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_00: That was the slogan.
- 1:20:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_02: It's like all these people in the Midwest who love it.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_00: Nice German beer.
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_00: He liked German beer.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_02: We always used to hear from Fran,
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_02: I'm not going to take this job unless I have Coach Chaney's blessing.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_02: We got the sense that he used to say Fran is the truth.
- 1:20:32SPEAKER_02: It just seemed like that mutual respect was legit.
- 1:20:37SPEAKER_02: When you're like,
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_02: this is your father,
- 1:20:39SPEAKER_02: your father-in-law,
- 1:20:41SPEAKER_02: sometimes it may have crossed your mind, who's going to replace my father?
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_02: What were your thoughts on the transition?
- 1:20:47SPEAKER_02: Because Frank used to say, I'm not going to do this unless I have his blessing.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_00: Well, I think me personally, I think that was like the perfect candidate.
- 1:21:01SPEAKER_00: But my dad, I think he respected Fran more than any other coach in the Big Five at that time.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_00: He always talked about Fran.
- 1:21:21SPEAKER_00: Even when Fran was coaching Temple, he's, you need to play more zone.
- 1:21:25SPEAKER_00: My daddy has to tell him, talking to him on the phone, you know, a lot.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_00: So, uh, but yeah, I think he, he wanted him to have the job.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_00: Uh, he, uh,
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_00: I think he had,
- 1:21:40SPEAKER_00: there was no other candidate that I think that he,
- 1:21:44SPEAKER_00: that my dad was thinking about other than Fran.
- 1:21:48SPEAKER_00: Um, I think at one time
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_00: he thought about
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_00: maybe either Nate or Dean Demopoulos
- 1:22:00SPEAKER_00: at one time,
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_00: but he thought Fran was the perfect fit as far as teaching the kids culture
- 1:22:09SPEAKER_00: and growth.
- 1:22:13SPEAKER_00: But that was the main thing, the culture.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_00: He didn't want to get back.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_00: He knew Fran would be good for the kids,
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_00: And so he wanted Fran more than anything else.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_00: And I'm glad Fran took the job.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_02: Do you remember what his thoughts were when Aaron got the job?
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_02: Because when they announced Aaron, doing it at McGonagall was a nice touch.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_02: And your father was there that day.
- 1:22:41SPEAKER_02: And you think about everything that Aaron was and became because of the opportunity
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_02: that your father gave him growing up like near Ethan Diamond.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_02: Do you remember any thoughts your father had?
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_02: Like, oh my God, this is Aaron.
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_02: I knew this kid when he was growing up.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_02: Congrats.
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_02: And now he is, you know, he's replacing Fran.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_02: Like two coaches removed.
- 1:23:02SPEAKER_02: That was quite a moment to witness.
- 1:23:04SPEAKER_02: I wonder what your father's thoughts were just taking all that in.
- 1:23:07SPEAKER_00: I think...
- 1:23:09SPEAKER_00: My dad, he loved Aaron, and he loved Nate Blackwell, and he loved
- 1:23:19SPEAKER_00: Mark Macon.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_00: So those are the three guys that he probably thought would probably take the job after Fran.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_00: But I think Aaron,
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_00: being that Aaron was a point guard,
- 1:23:36SPEAKER_00: I think he wanted Aaron to be Be the one because he's from Philly.
- 1:23:43SPEAKER_00: He's a Philadelphia native.
- 1:23:45SPEAKER_00: He knew that probably Aaron could probably recruit and get a lot
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_00: of Philadelphia players to come to Temple.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_00: Nate, with the situation he had...
- 1:23:58SPEAKER_00: I don't think they would have approved him being the coach of
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_00: the situation he's been through and what he's done
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_00: far as the problem he had.
- 1:24:13SPEAKER_00: And Mark, I think Aaron was just a better person for coaching.
- 1:24:19SPEAKER_00: I think he's seen the floor as more of a point guard.
- 1:24:24SPEAKER_00: Mark Macon was more of a shooting guard.
- 1:24:26SPEAKER_00: I think that he didn't use the zone as much as my dad would like for him to use, too.
- 1:24:34SPEAKER_00: You know?
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_00: Because they did a lot of man-to-man.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_00: It was hard to get.
- 1:24:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_00: But I think he loved Aaron when he took the job after Fran.
- 1:24:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:24:51SPEAKER_02: Probably hard to get today's player to run baseline to baseline and asking them
- 1:24:54SPEAKER_02: to do that today as much as your dad did.
- 1:24:58SPEAKER_01: So what are your thoughts on the program now?
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_01: I know Adam's had you back.
- 1:25:06SPEAKER_01: He's trying to keep people involved.
- 1:25:09SPEAKER_01: Obviously, we've talked a little bit here.
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_01: We know the game's changed a lot.
- 1:25:14SPEAKER_03: It's hard right now to be a college coach.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_03: If you don't have the money, I mean...
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, he's losing players.
- 1:25:23SPEAKER_03: He's losing, yeah, everybody.
- 1:25:24SPEAKER_00: Like every year, the players are leaving and they're going to other teams.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_00: And it's hard to keep a whole team together because it was the NIL revenue share.
- 1:25:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:25:39SPEAKER_00: Kids are going for the money.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_00: I don't know what my dad would do with the situation.
- 1:25:43SPEAKER_00: He wouldn't do
- 1:25:44SPEAKER_03: at all.
- 1:25:45SPEAKER_00: The loyalty is just not what it used to be.
- 1:25:49SPEAKER_00: When my dad was coaching, he...
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_00: He would get the players because they wanted to be there.
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_00: And they loved him.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_00: Martin Macon loved my dad.
- 1:26:03SPEAKER_00: He came all the way from Saginaw, Michigan.
- 1:26:07SPEAKER_00: Everybody in the whole country was after him.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_00: But my dad, he loved my dad.
- 1:26:13SPEAKER_00: My dad was sold.
- 1:26:17SPEAKER_00: Aaron McKee's another one.
- 1:26:20SPEAKER_00: He loved my dad.
- 1:26:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's a lot of players.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_00: I love my dad.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_00: I think he would have got Rasheed Wallace.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_00: And Dean, Dean found a way to get him.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_00: So it was...
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_00: I think it came down to Temple in Carolina at that time.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_00: But imagine, what about Pepe Sanchez?
- 1:26:46SPEAKER_00: When he recruited him,
- 1:26:48SPEAKER_00: he got it from George Savarini,
- 1:26:51SPEAKER_00: set him up for him, recruited him, and then my dad was trying to get the other...
- 1:26:58SPEAKER_00: Manager Nobile.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_00: Manager Nobile.
- 1:27:00SPEAKER_00: He was trying to get him...
- 1:27:02SPEAKER_00: But he couldn't get him
- 1:27:03SPEAKER_00: because they found out he was playing professional basketball over in Argentina.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_00: And that's so many reasons.
- 1:27:11SPEAKER_00: But otherwise, imagine him having Pepe at him.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_00: Oh, that would be incredible.
- 1:27:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, certainly would have.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:27:19SPEAKER_00: Manjanovi.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_01: How did he find contentment in retirement?
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_01: What changed for him and what was the same?
- 1:27:36SPEAKER_00: Well, I think that the retirement, I think it had a lot to do with my mother.
- 1:27:42SPEAKER_00: When she had breast cancer, she was ill. And my dad had to step in and take care of her.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_00: And he felt it was just time for it.
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_00: Feminist sucked,
- 1:27:54SPEAKER_00: taking care of my mother, and that was more important
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_00: than coaching at the time.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_03: One thing he didn't want to do when he retired is travel.
- 1:28:07SPEAKER_03: He said, I traveled enough, I don't want to go.
- 1:28:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:28:11SPEAKER_03: But he still, like,
- 1:28:12SPEAKER_03: you know,
- 1:28:13SPEAKER_03: he played golf, and he went out, played his cards with the guys at Walnut Lane.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that was his favorite place, Walnut Lane.
- 1:28:21SPEAKER_03: He loved going down the,
- 1:28:23SPEAKER_03: what is it, 9th Street and getting his food.
- 1:28:26SPEAKER_03: And he had little places up in Chestnut Hill he would go to.
- 1:28:31SPEAKER_00: He loved his fish.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_00: He would love his fish.
- 1:28:33SPEAKER_00: He would go to the fish market.
- 1:28:34SPEAKER_03: Broad and Nedra?
- 1:28:36SPEAKER_03: Isn't that the one?
- 1:28:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, there was an Asian fish market there.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_00: And he was telling me how fresh the fish was.
- 1:28:45SPEAKER_00: And he said that, he would say...
- 1:28:50SPEAKER_03: Don't do it.
- 1:28:52SPEAKER_00: He would say if the fish wasn't fresh in North Philly,
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_00: he said these black folks would run them out of here.
- 1:29:02SPEAKER_00: He would run these people out of here.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_00: He's absolutely He would say something like that to that effect.
- 1:29:07SPEAKER_00: But they always had great...
- 1:29:08SPEAKER_00: He would take us there.
- 1:29:09SPEAKER_00: He would take us there to get his seafood,
- 1:29:11SPEAKER_00: get his fish, his porgies, catfish, and porgies he would buy.
- 1:29:19SPEAKER_00: And it was fresh.
- 1:29:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
- 1:29:21SPEAKER_00: He would go home and cook it.
- 1:29:23SPEAKER_00: My mom would cook the fish.
- 1:29:24SPEAKER_03: Mom would cook it, yeah.
- 1:29:27SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he would love his seafood.
- 1:29:29SPEAKER_03: And crabs.
- 1:29:30SPEAKER_00: And crabs.
- 1:29:31SPEAKER_03: He would order from the...
- 1:29:33SPEAKER_03: Crab Place in Maryland.
- 1:29:36SPEAKER_03: Maryland?
- 1:29:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:29:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_03: And, I mean, he would take off the legs.
- 1:29:44SPEAKER_00: Lefty Giselle.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_00: What's his name?
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_00: Lefty Giselle, Coach from Maryland?
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:29:50SPEAKER_00: He goes there, and I think either he talked to my dad about the place.
- 1:29:55SPEAKER_00: My dad found out about it, and he started ordering crabs, and Lefty...
- 1:30:00SPEAKER_00: Lefty bought him crabs and sent them to him.
- 1:30:04SPEAKER_00: And these crabs from edge to edge was about this big.
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_03: They were huge.
- 1:30:11SPEAKER_00: Monster crabs.
- 1:30:12SPEAKER_00: I mean, they're jumbo.
- 1:30:13SPEAKER_03: He only liked the crabs.
- 1:30:14SPEAKER_03: It looked like they were doing push-ups.
- 1:30:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he said they were doing push-ups.
- 1:30:18SPEAKER_00: The crabs are so strong.
- 1:30:20SPEAKER_03: And he would rip off the legs and call us.
- 1:30:25SPEAKER_03: Come and get these crabs.
- 1:30:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:30:27SPEAKER_03: And he would keep the legs and give us, yeah.
- 1:30:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that explains why he made that reference in 2001 when they were playing Texas.
- 1:30:37SPEAKER_02: He said, these guys look like they have crab legs.
- 1:30:40SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 1:30:41SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 1:30:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:30:43SPEAKER_00: They would call them swamp dogs, I think he called them.
- 1:30:46SPEAKER_00: Swamp dogs, yeah.
- 1:30:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they were big crabs.
- 1:30:49SPEAKER_00: Loved his crabs.
- 1:30:51SPEAKER_03: But I don't know.
- 1:30:52SPEAKER_03: A lot changed.
- 1:30:53SPEAKER_03: I mean, he just wasn't as busy, but his other things stayed.
- 1:30:58SPEAKER_03: I mean, he would,
- 1:30:59SPEAKER_03: like I said,
- 1:30:59SPEAKER_03: he would cook,
- 1:31:00SPEAKER_03: he would go shopping, you know, he'd send me shopping, send him shopping.
- 1:31:05SPEAKER_02: I'm sure there's, I can't imagine too many moments where he doesn't cross your mind.
- 1:31:09SPEAKER_02: How do you, if you had to explain to people, how do you keep his memory alive today?
- 1:31:17SPEAKER_00: Stories.
- 1:31:19SPEAKER_00: Stories and pictures.
- 1:31:23SPEAKER_00: Well, buying crabs, too.
- 1:31:25SPEAKER_03: And the crabs.
- 1:31:27SPEAKER_03: Because we buy the crabs from the crab place.
- 1:31:29SPEAKER_03: We buy crabs, yeah.
- 1:31:32SPEAKER_00: And, yeah, yeah.
- 1:31:33SPEAKER_03: Whenever I cook cabbage, I think about him.
- 1:31:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:31:37SPEAKER_03: And greens, and the turkey wings.
- 1:31:41SPEAKER_00: I'll tell you the rest.
- 1:31:42SPEAKER_03: And the oxtails.
- 1:31:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:31:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he used like bacon edges, smoked bacon edges.
- 1:31:52SPEAKER_03: You have to do it a certain way.
- 1:31:54SPEAKER_00: Put them in a pot.
- 1:31:56SPEAKER_03: The way you wash it, the way you cut the cabbage.
- 1:32:00SPEAKER_00: Then he puts a certain amount of water in the cabbage.
- 1:32:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_00: And then he puts his cabbage in there.
- 1:32:08SPEAKER_00: And I don't know how long he cooks it, but.
- 1:32:11SPEAKER_03: It always came out.
- 1:32:12SPEAKER_00: It always came out.
- 1:32:13SPEAKER_00: And crushed pepper seeds.
- 1:32:14SPEAKER_00: He would use crushed pepper seeds.
- 1:32:16SPEAKER_00: He'll put in there as well with a little bit of olive oil.
- 1:32:22SPEAKER_01: So it's like you said at the beginning of the conversation when you talked about
- 1:32:25SPEAKER_01: the importance of food growing up and food in the start of your relationship
- 1:32:31SPEAKER_01: with him.
- 1:32:31SPEAKER_00: It's always been important in our family.
- 1:32:33SPEAKER_01: Memory alive through the stories and the memories and the experience of food.
- 1:32:39SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:32:40SPEAKER_01: Which is a great thing.
- 1:32:41SPEAKER_01: I'm wondering,
- 1:32:43SPEAKER_01: when your dad passed,
- 1:32:49SPEAKER_01: who reached out to you with a story of his impact that maybe surprised you the most?
- 1:32:58SPEAKER_01: There was a...
- 1:33:00SPEAKER_03: There was a kid I didn't know.
- 1:33:03SPEAKER_03: I heard about an impact he had on this young kid.
- 1:33:10SPEAKER_03: I don't remember his name.
- 1:33:17SPEAKER_03: They didn't reach out to us.
- 1:33:19SPEAKER_03: I had heard about it.
- 1:33:22SPEAKER_03: Dad, after every game,
- 1:33:25SPEAKER_03: not every game, but whenever he was there, would make time To see this kid.
- 1:33:31SPEAKER_03: I cannot remember his name.
- 1:33:32SPEAKER_02: Was it Kanji DeVito?
- 1:33:33SPEAKER_03: Not Kanji.
- 1:33:34SPEAKER_03: Oh, Kanji.
- 1:33:37SPEAKER_03: Oh, I loved Kanji.
- 1:33:39SPEAKER_03: It wasn't Kanji, but that was another kid that he...
- 1:33:43SPEAKER_03: He loved children.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_03: And he gave a lot of time to children.
- 1:33:49SPEAKER_03: He did.
- 1:33:50SPEAKER_03: After the games, before the games.
- 1:33:53SPEAKER_03: When he's out, just out, and kids would come up to him.
- 1:33:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, it was...
- 1:33:59SPEAKER_03: I cannot remember the kid's name, but he would give him a t-shirt, always hugging.
- 1:34:06SPEAKER_03: It was a huge impact on this young child because he was a special needs kid as well.
- 1:34:12SPEAKER_03: So, I mean, I don't know.
- 1:34:17SPEAKER_03: That was a good story
- 1:34:18SPEAKER_00: for me.
- 1:34:20SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:34:21SPEAKER_03: How about you?
- 1:34:24SPEAKER_00: I don't remember.
- 1:34:25SPEAKER_03: We've heard so many stories from so many people.
- 1:34:28SPEAKER_00: I know the only story I have
- 1:34:33SPEAKER_00: was the day before he passed where I came over to
- 1:34:39SPEAKER_00: the house and I was sitting with him because he has a lounge.
- 1:34:45SPEAKER_00: I have a lounge chair next to his bed in the client chair.
- 1:34:49SPEAKER_00: And I would sit there and be with him.
- 1:34:53SPEAKER_00: Almost every day.
- 1:34:55SPEAKER_00: And I was sitting there with him the night before he passed,
- 1:35:00SPEAKER_00: and we were watching basketball, NBA.
- 1:35:05SPEAKER_00: And I think we were watching the Sixers game, and then another game came on.
- 1:35:11SPEAKER_00: And it came to a point where I think it was a TNT game was on.
- 1:35:17SPEAKER_00: And then he looked over to me and he says,
- 1:35:21SPEAKER_00: He says, you better get home to your family.
- 1:35:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, and it was one, I looked at the time, it was about one o'clock in the morning.
- 1:35:29SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Dad, you really want me to go?
- 1:35:33SPEAKER_00: He said, yeah, you better go be with your family.
- 1:35:35SPEAKER_00: He said, I'm tired of basketball.
- 1:35:38SPEAKER_00: Turn the TV off.
- 1:35:41SPEAKER_00: And...
- 1:35:43SPEAKER_00: And you go at home.
- 1:35:46SPEAKER_00: And I didn't think nothing of it.
- 1:35:49SPEAKER_00: And I went home that night.
- 1:35:51SPEAKER_00: And the next morning,
- 1:35:56SPEAKER_00: my sister called me because she was living there at the time.
- 1:36:00SPEAKER_00: And she says, John, John, I think Daddy passed.
- 1:36:04SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, he passed?
- 1:36:06SPEAKER_00: What do you mean he passed?
- 1:36:08SPEAKER_00: He said, I don't think he's breathing.
- 1:36:10SPEAKER_00: She says, well, what shall I do?
- 1:36:12SPEAKER_00: I said, well, call 911.
- 1:36:14SPEAKER_00: I said, that's the first thing you do, call 911.
- 1:36:18SPEAKER_00: And I got dressed, and I immediately drove over there.
- 1:36:21SPEAKER_00: I'm like 15 minutes away.
- 1:36:24SPEAKER_00: And when I got there,
- 1:36:29SPEAKER_00: Dr., what's the doctor's name?
- 1:36:33SPEAKER_00: Scanlon.
- 1:36:33SPEAKER_00: Scanlon was there,
- 1:36:34SPEAKER_00: and I went over there,
- 1:36:37SPEAKER_00: and I saw him,
- 1:36:37SPEAKER_00: and he wasn't breathing,
- 1:36:38SPEAKER_00: and then The medics were there, and they told me that he passed.
- 1:36:51SPEAKER_00: So I was there probably the whole night.
- 1:36:53SPEAKER_00: I mean, the whole day at the time.
- 1:36:58SPEAKER_00: But it was kind of ironic.
- 1:36:59SPEAKER_00: It was kind of the day before.
- 1:37:02SPEAKER_00: I don't know if he knew he was going,
- 1:37:06SPEAKER_00: but he didn't want me to spend the night He wanted me to go home,
- 1:37:11SPEAKER_00: you know, because I was going to stay there and just fall asleep.
- 1:37:14SPEAKER_03: Like you always do.
- 1:37:15SPEAKER_03: Like I always do.
- 1:37:16SPEAKER_00: You know, I'll sleep in that chair in the morning time.
- 1:37:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:37:19SPEAKER_00: And then leave in the morning.
- 1:37:21SPEAKER_00: But that particular time was kind of weird because it's
- 1:37:25SPEAKER_00: the first time he's ever said, I'm tired of basketball.
- 1:37:28SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 1:37:29SPEAKER_03: And turn the TV off.
- 1:37:30SPEAKER_00: And then turn the TV off.
- 1:37:32SPEAKER_00: Never.
- 1:37:32SPEAKER_00: So...
- 1:37:36SPEAKER_03: And a few nights before that, there was a Zoom with some of the former players.
- 1:37:44SPEAKER_03: And we were there for that.
- 1:37:46SPEAKER_03: And that was beautiful.
- 1:37:48SPEAKER_03: I remember Darren, Mike, Howie, Jerome.
- 1:37:56SPEAKER_03: Doing his Jay Norman bit.
- 1:37:58SPEAKER_03: Oh my gosh, he was so funny.
- 1:38:00SPEAKER_03: But that was just beautiful, having them with him and watching him, talking to them.
- 1:38:10SPEAKER_03: And at the end, the team... That was his birthday.
- 1:38:13SPEAKER_00: It was his birthday.
- 1:38:14SPEAKER_00: Was it January 21st?
- 1:38:17SPEAKER_00: It was his birthday.
- 1:38:19SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 1:38:19SPEAKER_00: Remember we had everybody together on his birthday?
- 1:38:23SPEAKER_00: And we did a video, did the thing.
- 1:38:25SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but I don't know if it was that year.
- 1:38:29SPEAKER_00: Was that
- 1:38:30SPEAKER_03: the one?
- 1:38:30SPEAKER_00: And then it was like two weeks after.
- 1:38:33SPEAKER_00: He passed like two weeks after that, right?
- 1:38:35SPEAKER_03: No, he passed away a few days after.
- 1:38:38SPEAKER_03: So no, it wasn't that.
- 1:38:40SPEAKER_03: But anyway, they did the team together.
- 1:38:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, they said team together.
- 1:38:46SPEAKER_03: Chant, which was just special.
- 1:38:51SPEAKER_03: And then a few days later he passed.
- 1:38:53SPEAKER_03: It was almost like he knew.
- 1:38:55SPEAKER_03: Like you said, it was almost like he knew.
- 1:38:57SPEAKER_03: He was ready.
- 1:38:59SPEAKER_03: Not that he knew, but maybe he was ready.
- 1:39:01SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 1:39:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:39:03SPEAKER_01: You know,
- 1:39:03SPEAKER_01: you hear these stories,
- 1:39:05SPEAKER_01: because we're all at that point where we know people, we've lost people.
- 1:39:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:39:13SPEAKER_01: You know, I know of stories where the person wanted to be left alone.
- 1:39:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:39:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, of course there's the stories of surrounded by family,
- 1:39:24SPEAKER_01: but there's also times I think,
- 1:39:26SPEAKER_01: you know, and if there's something, something to that, we don't know.
- 1:39:31SPEAKER_01: We're not going to know until it's that time for us.
- 1:39:33SPEAKER_01: And even though we might not be cognizant of it.
- 1:39:36SPEAKER_01: I do know this and it's just,
- 1:39:39SPEAKER_01: it's, you know, I saw you getting a little choked up on the memory of that night.
- 1:39:46SPEAKER_01: I, um, It's such an odd thing.
- 1:39:48SPEAKER_01: You know, my father was sick for a while.
- 1:39:52SPEAKER_01: He'd had a bad stroke.
- 1:39:54SPEAKER_01: And he had 13 years after that where he was alive, but he was a very different person.
- 1:39:59SPEAKER_01: And then he ended up dying of lung cancer.
- 1:40:03SPEAKER_01: He was never a smoker.
- 1:40:04SPEAKER_01: He was a jazz musician.
- 1:40:06SPEAKER_01: He was in the clubs.
- 1:40:07SPEAKER_01: Who knows what happened.
- 1:40:09SPEAKER_01: But, you know, when it was his time and he went and I wasn't there,
- 1:40:16SPEAKER_01: didn't cry.
- 1:40:18SPEAKER_01: And I've cried many times, missing my dad.
- 1:40:20SPEAKER_01: I miss my dad very much.
- 1:40:25SPEAKER_01: But when your dad died, and I heard, I broke down.
- 1:40:29SPEAKER_01: I remember I called my friend Amy, sobbing.
- 1:40:33SPEAKER_01: And I don't know why.
- 1:40:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, I knew your father.
- 1:40:36SPEAKER_01: I had interacted with him a number of times.
- 1:40:38SPEAKER_01: We weren't incredibly close, but I had met him many times over the years.
- 1:40:43SPEAKER_01: And I just felt like it was a part of my life.
- 1:40:47SPEAKER_01: You know, that...
- 1:40:48SPEAKER_01: That was very special to me that was now gone.
- 1:40:52SPEAKER_01: And someone who was very special at a formative time for me.
- 1:40:55SPEAKER_01: So I can only imagine what it must have been like for you who were truly close
- 1:41:00SPEAKER_01: and family and all
- 1:41:02SPEAKER_00: of that.
- 1:41:02SPEAKER_00: It felt like it took something out of my life because I cried myself.
- 1:41:08SPEAKER_00: And it felt like a part of me is missing now because he passed away.
- 1:41:15SPEAKER_00: It's just something to Every time I think about him and when I go visit him,
- 1:41:24SPEAKER_00: you know, I feel his energy when I come to his grave site.
- 1:41:31SPEAKER_00: And it just makes me cry.
- 1:41:35SPEAKER_00: I know when he was buried that day, I sobbed all over the place.
- 1:41:39SPEAKER_00: I was crying all over the place.
- 1:41:41SPEAKER_00: I couldn't, you know.
- 1:41:44SPEAKER_00: Even at the services, they wanted me to speak.
- 1:41:47SPEAKER_00: I couldn't speak.
- 1:41:48SPEAKER_00: I was...
- 1:41:49SPEAKER_00: I was so full of emotion that I couldn't sit, I couldn't talk, I couldn't speak.
- 1:41:57SPEAKER_01: Well, it means a lot to us that, I mean,
- 1:42:04SPEAKER_01: I think this goes back to why John was so adamant about wanting to have the two
- 1:42:08SPEAKER_01: of you here.
- 1:42:09SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:42:09SPEAKER_01: To talk about your father.
- 1:42:11SPEAKER_01: His legacy was like, I know we're going to talk to you again.
- 1:42:13SPEAKER_01: I know there's going to be things that come up where we want to reference you in
- 1:42:17SPEAKER_01: and get your perspective as we hear stories from other people.
- 1:42:20SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:42:22SPEAKER_01: What was John's take on that?
- 1:42:23SPEAKER_01: What was Maria's take on that?
- 1:42:25SPEAKER_01: And just all the great stuff about the rich legacy that...
- 1:42:32SPEAKER_01: Your father leaves that,
- 1:42:34SPEAKER_01: and we're,
- 1:42:34SPEAKER_01: you know,
- 1:42:34SPEAKER_01: we're excited to dig in and start this journey and couldn't be more thrilled
- 1:42:40SPEAKER_01: to have had time and you two to have taken your time.
- 1:42:45SPEAKER_01: We're so appreciative.
- 1:42:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, thank you so much.
- 1:42:48SPEAKER_00: Thank you for having us.
