- 0:01We hear this all the time, hot and cold spots in the house. What does that mean?
- 0:07Well, the questions come in.
- 0:09Why is one of my rooms hotter or colder than the other?
- 0:15So I guess this person has a problem in the summer and the winter is my guess,
- 0:18probably with a specific room.
- 0:19So we hear about it, hot and cold spots. One room is hotter in the summer than
- 0:25the rest and colder in the winter than the rest. What could be going on there?
- 0:30Yeah so it could be a few different things um right now
- 0:33if it's in uh summertime um and
- 0:37really wintertime too for that matter it's it's if it's the same room it
- 0:39could be a couple different things sometimes it's opposite rooms but first thing
- 0:42i want to look at is is just overall once again the simple things i like to
- 0:46keep things simple as are the registers all opened uh but not even just that
- 0:50are they adjusted properly so all all the way open isn't always uh the the correct
- 0:55or the best option right because those registers that's why your suppliers have dampers on them,
- 1:00you can adjust them, where returns don't. So we always want free return coming back.
- 1:04The supplies can be adjusted to regulate the final amount of errors coming into a room.
- 1:09Air is lazy. It's like a lot of us, right? A lot of people. It's lazy.
- 1:14It takes the path to least resistance.
- 1:16And so that air, as it goes down the duct stream, gets farther away from the furnace.
- 1:20It gets less and less and less. It's going to leave the first vents possible.
- 1:24Oftentimes you'll find registers dampened down a little bit more closer to the
- 1:28equipment and opened up a little bit more as they get farther away from the
- 1:30equipment to help keep the pressure up.
- 1:32Now, a properly designed duct system is going to help eliminate how much those
- 1:37have to be adjusted at the actual register. That's just the final point of adjustment.
- 1:41So there's one thing is checking the register, making sure they're open,
- 1:44free, not covered up and adjusted properly.
- 1:46The second thing being is duct sizing is the duct system properly sized.
- 1:51One of our guarantees that we give with new systems is a 25% utility savings guarantee.
- 1:56One of the biggest reasons, there's a couple of things, but one of the biggest
- 1:59reasons we're able to do that is because of airflow and because of proper duct sizing.
- 2:05It's amazing. And if you look at studies that have been done across the country,
- 2:10how many air duct systems are improperly sized?
- 2:13As a matter of fact, I think it's over 70% of systems across the U.S.
- 2:16Never reach 75% of capacity.
- 2:18I may be off. I'm pretty sure that's what the study shows, which is amazing.
- 2:22And that comes down to system sizing. So doing proper manual J-low calcs on
- 2:26the home to get the proper size system, but as well as them properly sizing
- 2:30the duct system for that space.
- 2:33And so that's another thing that comes into play. So then, of course,
- 2:37cold spots can also be affected by overall efficiency of the system.
- 2:42We talk a lot about, you know, on this show that ties to so many different things,
- 2:45the cleanness of the system, filtration, things like that.
- 2:48But those are going to be a couple of things that can definitely cause that.
- 2:51I'm sure you've also seen something very simple. Um, we were up in your attic
- 2:55and for some reason there's no insulation over that room.
- 2:58Yeah, absolutely. It could be as simple as that.
- 3:01If someone's done something at one point, they had to retro an area,
- 3:05reflect whatever, who knows what, right?
- 3:07It could be a list of things, but yeah, just no insulation or poor insulation.
- 3:11Another one too, we talked about duct sizing, but it's also air leakage.
- 3:14And so a lot of duct systems have a really lot of, or a lot of air,
- 3:19I'll get it, a lot of air leakage in the system.
- 3:22So around the joints, around the boots, around the takeoffs,
- 3:26whether the flex duck hooks up to the takeoff, and if it's sheet metal duck,
- 3:29all the joints and rivets and screws and things, it's amazing you add all it
- 3:33up, how many square inches of air loss there is on a duck system.
- 3:36And so once again, it gets farther away from the system. Now we have more air
- 3:39mixing from the crawl spaces and attics and wall spaces and different things.
- 3:43We're going to hurt the comfort of a given room and or air even delivered there.
- 3:48It's a science. It's experience.
- 3:52You guys know what you're doing at Schaefer Heating and Cooling. Um...
- 3:57You know, the experience thing, let me touch upon that. No matter how much you're
- 4:01trained in the classroom, there's just so much you learn over time.
- 4:06In an attic, in a basement, in a crawl space, in a garage, you know, on someone's property.
- 4:16And it's, you know, it's all collective. You know, it kind of reminds me of AI today, like ChatGPT.
- 4:21It alone, I don't think is smart. It has access to all this information across
- 4:28the internet, and it processes it and brings it together for a result.
- 4:32And I think that's how it is with you guys. You have highly trained and experienced
- 4:36technicians, don't you?
- 4:38Absolutely. So back to training, yes, that's extremely important.
- 4:42Every single one of our team members, myself included, go through over 250 hours
- 4:45of training minimum per year.
- 4:47And so that's ongoing forever. day one, or you've been here for 20 years,
- 4:52we're always going to continue to train and train and train.
- 4:55But also too, this year we celebrate our 40 years.
- 4:58So we also have 40 years as an organization of experience, you know,
- 5:02seeing all these different scenarios and going through and learning and constantly
- 5:06adapting to be able to provide that best service possible.
- 5:11So yes, experience and training, you put the two together.
- 5:14That's what you call a wow experience.
- 5:17Unbeatable congratulations on your 40th anniversary that's
- 5:21fantastic that is thank you that is phenomenal phenomenal okay thank you very
- 5:27much nathan i appreciate it all of nathan's information is located in the show
