- 0:11Hello friends, it's Shawn here. It's Wednesday.
- 0:15It is the 22nd of January. The year is still so new.
- 0:19So new that I have not had to put on an Army uniform just yet.
- 0:23Which means I have not had to comply with the Army dress
- 0:27manual. Which means I have not had to
- 0:29shave. Which means I have got a hairy
- 0:32chin and a beard the way Sean used to before he joined the
- 0:36Army. And, well, there's a little bit
- 0:38more white hair than they used to be.
- 0:40And my lovely wife not long ago compared me to one of the boys
- 0:46fluffy toys from when they were a baby.
- 0:48So there you go. I'm looking like a fluffy toy
- 0:50these days, and I hope you are going well with whatever the
- 0:53beginning of the year brings you.
- 0:55But one thing we know is these years come and go and move
- 0:59through, as is our Bible reading as we're moving through king
- 1:04after king, reign after reign, in the north, in Israel and in
- 1:08the South in Judah, as we see these kings, I was going to say
- 1:12trying and failing, some of them not even trying, but some of
- 1:14them doing the right thing. But yeah, that unfortunately is
- 1:18the exception rather than the rule.
- 1:21So let us continue with the story of these kings, North and
- 1:26South, as we read together First Kings chapter 16.
- 1:39This message from the Lord was delivered to King Basha by the
- 1:43prophet Jehu, son of Hanani. I lifted you out of the dust to
- 1:48make you ruler of my people Israel.
- 1:51But you have followed the evil example of Jeroboam.
- 1:54You have provoked my anger by causing my people Israel to sin,
- 1:58so now I will destroy you and your family, just as I destroyed
- 2:03the descendants of Jeroboam, son of Nebat.
- 2:06The member of Barsha's family who die in the city will be
- 2:09eaten by dogs, and those who die in the field will be eaten by
- 2:13vultures. The rest of the events in
- 2:16Barsha's reign and the extent of his power are recorded in the
- 2:20Book of the History of the Kings of Israel.
- 2:24When Barsha died, he was buried in Terza.
- 2:27Then his son Elah became the next king.
- 2:30The message from the Lord against Barsha and his family
- 2:33came through the prophet Jehu, son of Hanani.
- 2:37It was delivered because Barsha had done what was evil in the
- 2:41Lord's sight, just as the family of Jeroboam had done, and also
- 2:45because Barsha had destroyed the family of Jeroboam.
- 2:48The Lord's anger was provoked by Barsha's sins.
- 2:53Elah, son of Basha, began to rule over Israel in the 26th
- 2:57year of King Assa's reign and Judah.
- 3:00He reigned in the city of Terza for two years.
- 3:03Then Zimri, who commanded half of the royal Chariots, made
- 3:07plans to kill him. One day in Terza, Elah was
- 3:11getting drunk at the home of Arza, the supervisor of the
- 3:14palace. Zimri walked in and struck him
- 3:17down and killed him. This happened in the 27th year
- 3:21of King Assa's reign and Judah. Then Zimri became the next king.
- 3:26Zimri immediately killed the entire royal family of Barsha,
- 3:30leaving him not even a single male child.
- 3:33He even destroyed distant relatives and friends.
- 3:37So Zimri destroyed the dynasty of Barsha, as the Lord had
- 3:41promised through the prophet Jehu.
- 3:43This happened because of all the sins Barsha and his son Elah had
- 3:48committed and because of the sins they led Israel to commit.
- 3:51They provoked the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel with
- 3:55their worthless idols. The rest of the events in Elah's
- 3:59reign and everything he did are recorded in the Book of the
- 4:02History of the Kings of Israel. Zimri began to rule over Israel
- 4:07in the 27th year of King Asa's reign in Judah, but his reign
- 4:11and Teresa lasted only seven days.
- 4:15The army of Israel was then attacking the Philistine town of
- 4:18Gibbethon. When they heard that Zimri had
- 4:21committed treason and had assassinated the king that very
- 4:25day, they chose Omri, commander of the army, as the new king of
- 4:29Israel. So Omri led the entire army of
- 4:32Israel up from Gibbethon to attack Terza, Israel's capital.
- 4:38When Zimri saw that the city had been taken, he went into the
- 4:41citadel of the palace and burned it down over himself and died in
- 4:46the flames. For he too had done what was
- 4:49evil in the Lord's sight. He followed the example of
- 4:52Jeroboam in all the sins he had committed and LED Israel to
- 4:56commit. The rest of the events in
- 4:58Zimri's reign and his conspiracy are recorded in the Book of the
- 5:02History of the Kings of Israel. But now the people of Israel
- 5:07were split into two factions. Half the people tried to make
- 5:11Tibnai, son of Ginath, their king, while the other half
- 5:14supported Omri. But Omri's supporters defeated
- 5:18the supporters of Tibnai, so Tibnai was killed and Omri
- 5:22became the next king. Omri began to rule over Israel
- 5:27in the 31st year of King Assa's reign and Judah.
- 5:30He reigned 12 years in all, six of them in Teresa.
- 5:34Then Omri brought the hill now known as Samaria from its owner
- 5:39Shema for 150 lbs of silver. He built a city on it and called
- 5:44the city Samaria in honour of Shema.
- 5:48But Omri did what was evil in the Lord's sight, even more than
- 5:52any of the kings before him. He followed the example of
- 5:55Jeroboam, son of Nebat. In all the sins he had committed
- 5:59and LED Israel to commit. The people provoked the anger of
- 6:03the Lord the God of Israel with their worthless idols.
- 6:08The rest of the events in Omni's reign, the extent of his power,
- 6:12and everything he did are recorded in the Book of the
- 6:15History of the Kings of Israel. When Omri died, he was buried in
- 6:20Samaria. Then his son Ahab became the
- 6:23next king. Ahab son of Omri began to rule
- 6:27over Israel in the 38th year of King Ass's reign and Judah.
- 6:31He reigned in Samaria 22 years. But Ahab son of Omri, did what
- 6:37was evil in the Lord's sight, even more than any of the kings
- 6:41before him. And as though it were not enough
- 6:44to follow the simple example of Jeroboam, he married Jezebel,
- 6:48the daughter of King Athbaal of the Sedonians, and he began to
- 6:52bow down in worship of Bal. First Ahab built a temper and an
- 6:57altar for Bal and Samaria. Then he set up an ashrapole.
- 7:02He did more to provoke the anger of the Lord, the God of Israel,
- 7:06than any of the kings of Israel before him.
- 7:10It was during his reign that Heil, a man from Bethel, rebuilt
- 7:14Jericho. When he laid its foundations, it
- 7:17cost him the life of his oldest son Abram, and when he completed
- 7:22it and set up its gates, it cost him the life of his youngest
- 7:25son, Segum. This all happened according to
- 7:29the message from the Lord concerning Jericho spoken by
- 7:32Joshua son of Nun. My Lord, as we here in this
- 7:46Bible reading, and we know only too well from the experience of
- 7:49our lives, there is a lot of game playing that goes on in the
- 7:53world around us. People jostling for advantage,
- 7:57people subjecting others to terrible behaviour for their own
- 8:02benefits, but all in pursuit of greed and our own self interest.
- 8:08And Lord, we are not innocent, we have done things to position
- 8:11ourselves where we want to be, often and sometimes at the
- 8:14expense of others, and we put our own interests first before
- 8:18those of others. Ah, but Lord, in you, our
- 8:22perfect King, we see a different way, We see a better way, Jesus,
- 8:28that you would come here, live your life and give up everything
- 8:32for us, to sacrifice everything that was dear to You for our
- 8:38benefit and not for yours. Lord, what an example you lead
- 8:42for us. So Lord, I just pray that you
- 8:46would continue your good work in us, that Your Spirit would
- 8:50soften our hard hearts, shift our interest away from ourselves
- 8:56to those around us so that like you, we can love wholeheartedly
- 9:02and act to the benefit of others and not our own self interest
- 9:07our Lord. And if we are all caring for
- 9:10those around us, our needs surely will be met as well.
- 9:15Thank you Lord for your love. Thank you that you give it
- 9:18selflessly and that we are the lucky recipients.
- 9:23We just thank you, we praise you, and we pray all of these
- 9:27things in your wonderful name come in.
