- 0:42Speaker 2: the show, I am sitting down with a good friend
- 0:45Speaker 2: of mine, Olympian and Lululemon ambassador Colleen Quickly. We caught
- 0:50Speaker 2: up right here in New York City, shortly after the
- 0:53Speaker 2: USATF Outdoor Championships, Colleen herself not participating, but in town
- 0:59Speaker 2: to cheer on one of her Team Meridia teammates. For
- 1:03Speaker 2: those of you that don't know about Meridia, it's a
- 1:05Speaker 2: woman led pro track team, say Pro Track Team five
- 1:09Speaker 2: times Fast, founded by Colleen, that is focused on athlete
- 1:14Speaker 2: storytelling and mental health advocacy. In today's combo, we chat
- 1:20Speaker 2: about how Colleen's in a really different place today compared
- 1:23Speaker 2: to ten years ago when she first made the Olympic team.
- 1:27Speaker 2: We dive deep into her mental shift navigating injuries.
- 1:30Speaker 3: What it's like to be someone that so many people.
- 1:33Speaker 2: Want to talk about theirs with and how she's embracing
- 1:37Speaker 2: whole new challenges like taking on the world of high rocks.
- 1:42Speaker 2: There may be a race announcement in today's episode.
- 1:46Speaker 4: Also a fun note.
- 1:47Speaker 2: By the time this episode lands in your feeds, both
- 1:51Speaker 2: Colleen and I will have just finished running Lululemon's seweez
- 1:55Speaker 2: over in Vancouver. I am so excited to get back
- 1:58Speaker 2: to Vancouver. It's been i mean eight years since I'd
- 2:02Speaker 2: been there last I Digress, So you know, we had
- 2:05Speaker 2: plenty to chat about when it comes to racing and
- 2:08Speaker 2: mindset and showing up for yourself through every season of life.

- 2:33Speaker 2: a hurdling.
- 2:44Speaker 4: Today.
- 2:44Speaker 2: I am sitting down with Colleen quickly. She is an
- 2:48Speaker 2: Olympian she's also the would you call yourself the founder
- 2:53Speaker 2: of Meridia?
- 2:53Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 2:54Speaker 1: I feel like founder these days is such a loaded
- 2:56Speaker 1: and stupid word. But I did start a team. Okay,
- 3:01Speaker 1: she just started a team. It's called Meridia. Colleen quickly,
- 3:04Speaker 1: welcome back to Hurdle.
- 3:05Speaker 4: How are we? Thank you. It's so fun to be
- 3:07Speaker 4: here after eight years. Oh my gosh.
- 3:11Speaker 1: I guess I've maybe done one since then. Yeah, but
- 3:13Speaker 1: my first time on the pod was episode thirty. I
- 3:15Speaker 1: just looked it up before this, twenty eighteen. We are
- 3:18Speaker 1: different humans.
- 3:20Speaker 4: We have both evolved a lot since that. I'm proud
- 3:22Speaker 4: of us.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Dude, okay, who but we have both of all to
- 3:26Speaker 2: trigger you.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I oh my god.
- 3:29Speaker 2: I was like, I was doing some research into like
- 3:33Speaker 2: so much of the mental work that we'll get into
- 3:36Speaker 2: talking about today, and I was like, oh my god,
- 3:39Speaker 2: there's just so much trauma stored in my body in.
- 3:41Speaker 4: So many different places. Yeah, yeah, we can talk about that.
- 3:44Speaker 2: We will a little teaser, a little teaser for what's
- 3:47Speaker 2: coming down the pipe. Okay, I know I did a
- 3:50Speaker 2: breezy how are you? But how are you doing really
- 3:52Speaker 2: right now?
- 3:53Speaker 4: College? Yeah?
- 3:53Speaker 1: Monday morning in New York City I guess one day
- 3:56Speaker 1: after the twenty twenty six US Track and Field National Championship.
- 4:00Speaker 1: This is like my fifteen million year not competing at USA,
- 4:05Speaker 1: and it gets easier every year. I had one athlete
- 4:07Speaker 1: competing in the steeple chase on Saturday, sixth place, like
- 4:10Speaker 1: Gracie had a sixth place, and we.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Just wrote about it.
- 4:12Speaker 1: I have a weekly newsletter for the team that I write,
- 4:15Speaker 1: Meridia Mondays, So I was just sitting in a coffee
- 4:17Speaker 1: shop in Brooklyn nearby writing the newsletter and I got
- 4:20Speaker 1: it sent off right before walking over here.
- 4:23Speaker 4: But yeah, Monday morning's going pretty well.
- 4:25Speaker 1: There's always like crazy lots of things going on, but
- 4:28Speaker 1: mostly I feel like, right now I'm happy to be
- 4:30Speaker 1: in New York, one of my favorite places in the world,
- 4:33Speaker 1: New York in July, and just like having fun with.
- 4:35Speaker 2: That, having fun with that. It's really interesting and beautiful.
- 4:39Speaker 2: The way that you would just spoke about, you know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: my zillion time not competing at US as feels a
- 4:45Speaker 2: little bit loaded.
- 4:46Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean coming to USA is when you're in
- 4:49Speaker 1: a position like mine is always it's like I'm super
- 4:52Speaker 1: excited for Gracie and you know, I'm like my heart
- 4:54Speaker 1: is just pouring into every I know exactly how it
- 4:57Speaker 1: feels to be in her shoes and all that. And
- 4:59Speaker 1: then I'm watching the race and I'm like years past
- 5:02Speaker 1: I've been watching the race, and like last year I
- 5:05Speaker 1: watched from the upper like nosebleeds at Hayward and I
- 5:09Speaker 1: started crying during the race. I was just like, oh, like,
- 5:12Speaker 1: you know, it was just I want to I feel
- 5:14Speaker 1: like I should be there, and it's like a very
- 5:16Speaker 1: loaded thing. And this year I had none of that.
- 5:19Speaker 1: I didn't feel actually like didn't even realize un till
- 5:22Speaker 1: after that, I like, oh, that was like a race
- 5:25Speaker 1: I would have been in, Like I was just so
- 5:27Speaker 1: dialed into this is Gracie's race, and like I'm here
- 5:30Speaker 1: on behalf of her in the capacity of supporting her.
- 5:34Speaker 4: So it's kind of interesting.
- 5:35Speaker 1: Yeah, And I was talking to Rye Benjamin on the
- 5:38Speaker 1: like whatever concourse and he was like, how, like how
- 5:41Speaker 1: are you feeling her, Like did you have any feelings
- 5:43Speaker 1: of like wanting to be in the race.
- 5:44Speaker 4: And I was like, not even a little.
- 5:47Speaker 3: Did RAI have feelings about wanting to be in the race.
- 5:49Speaker 1: He was more like he's he felt like he didn't
- 5:52Speaker 1: need to compete at usas or whatever. But it's different
- 5:55Speaker 1: for him because he's like, I chose not to do it,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and like I could go out there and beat everybody
- 5:59Speaker 1: if I wanted to, but I chose not to. And
- 6:02Speaker 1: I'm glad to not have like the stress of usas
- 6:04Speaker 1: there's no team to make it and so it's just
- 6:06Speaker 1: like I get to come against his birthday. So it's
- 6:08Speaker 1: just like in the city for his birthday, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 1: like seeing friends. So mine is more like, yeah, it
- 6:14Speaker 1: doesn't feel as much of a choice to not do
- 6:17Speaker 1: it because I'm like an Olympic champion. Yeah, I just
- 6:20Speaker 1: didn't want to do it, which is a position he's in,
- 6:22Speaker 1: which is great and we love that for him.
- 6:24Speaker 2: How do you think, and I mean this is a
- 6:27Speaker 2: loaded question, but how did you get to a place
- 6:31Speaker 2: where you feel like this now because so much work
- 6:36Speaker 2: has gone in to the mental gymnastics that enables you
- 6:41Speaker 2: to be here feeling present, feeling excited to be as
- 6:46Speaker 2: you are in this moment.
- 6:47Speaker 4: Totally.
- 6:48Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I think one big thing happened for
- 6:51Speaker 1: me this year was I got a different type of
- 6:53Speaker 1: image on my left foot is like my achilles feel
- 6:57Speaker 1: like I've always just had issues since high school with
- 6:59Speaker 1: that foot. It's usually the issues that it just breaks,
- 7:02Speaker 1: and I just couldn't understand why, because I feel that
- 7:06Speaker 1: I'm a really overall very healthy person, which is weird
- 7:10Speaker 1: because I'm always injured. But I'm like, I'm a very
- 7:12Speaker 1: healthy person, and I have a really strong body, and
- 7:15Speaker 1: I like do all the right things, and I have
- 7:17Speaker 1: a lot of amazing people who help, you know, try
- 7:21Speaker 1: and keep me healthy. Yet I cannot keep my foot healthy.
- 7:24Speaker 1: It's like this one thing that I just can't figure out,
- 7:26Speaker 1: and it's so frustrating. And then I got a different
- 7:28Speaker 1: type of image earlier this year that finally helped me
- 7:31Speaker 1: understand my foot in a way that I never have
- 7:34Speaker 1: and it showed that I have a chronic probably been
- 7:38Speaker 1: there for who knows how long, Maybe I'll throw out
- 7:40Speaker 1: like ten years.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Liz Frank injury.
- 7:43Speaker 1: So Liz Frank is a joint, a ligament in like
- 7:46Speaker 1: your midfoot that keeps It's like responsible for keeping your
- 7:49Speaker 1: arch up and helping you roll through the middle of
- 7:52Speaker 1: your foot and push off your big toe.
- 7:54Speaker 4: Basically I can't do that.
- 7:55Speaker 1: I can't roll through my foot and push off my
- 7:57Speaker 1: big toe and haven't been able to for a long time.
- 7:59Speaker 1: I can't do a stand on my left leg and
- 8:02Speaker 1: do a heel raise. I can't get my heel off
- 8:04Speaker 1: the ground. It's been like that for a while. And
- 8:06Speaker 1: I just I'm like, it's not for lack of calf strength,
- 8:10Speaker 1: Like have you seen these puppies, Like, it's not that
- 8:12Speaker 1: you just can't figure out why. And it was like, yeah,
- 8:15Speaker 1: you're that that joint is calcified.
- 8:18Speaker 4: It's soft, like it.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Just is completely your body has put down calcification in
- 8:24Speaker 1: order to try and create stability in an area where
- 8:27Speaker 1: there was a torn ligament, and so it's just calcified.
- 8:30Speaker 1: And then the bones around it have gotten arthritic because
- 8:34Speaker 1: they can't like move properly, and yeah, having been like
- 8:37Speaker 1: that for so long, like you know, this is just
- 8:40Speaker 1: kind of like what your foot is now. And I
- 8:41Speaker 1: was like, oh, like okay that, Like I read the
- 8:45Speaker 1: kind of the AI. I readoubt of what the symptoms
- 8:47Speaker 1: are for this type of injury, and I was like
- 8:49Speaker 1: doing some research with my buddy chat gpt on like hey,
- 8:54Speaker 1: none of these stupid doctor as somebody able to figure
- 8:56Speaker 1: this out, maybe like the robots can, and yeah, and
- 8:58Speaker 1: it was like showIn it's like telling me all this
- 9:00Speaker 1: stuff and I was like, oh, that's exactly me, Like
- 9:04Speaker 1: how have we missed this?
- 9:04Speaker 4: Like this is so obvious now.
- 9:07Speaker 1: But then what happened was like in the weeks and
- 9:11Speaker 1: like yeah really weeks after that, I was just like, oh,
- 9:14Speaker 1: like I'm not crazy. This is a real thing. It's
- 9:16Speaker 1: like pretty bad and I'm done. I was just like
- 9:20Speaker 1: I'm not doing this anymore. I'm not I'm not going
- 9:23Speaker 1: to the I'm not going to go find the next
- 9:26Speaker 1: doctor with the magic thing. And then like I just
- 9:29Speaker 1: I can't. I'm like too tired and I just can't
- 9:31Speaker 1: do it anymore. And I think that was what was
- 9:33Speaker 1: able to give me the peace that I am now
- 9:35Speaker 1: where I'm like at USAS and I'm just like, yeah,
- 9:37Speaker 1: I don't want to be in that race, Like I
- 9:39Speaker 1: just can't, you know, I can't fight it anymore. I
- 9:42Speaker 1: feel like I did absolutely everything I could have done,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and I'm just like ready for a new challenge. I'm
- 9:46Speaker 1: ready for something different and something that makes me get
- 9:50Speaker 1: excited and doesn't make me feel like defeated every time
- 9:54Speaker 1: I get to USA's And I tried to get there
- 9:56Speaker 1: and then I you know, I couldn't make it happen,
- 9:58Speaker 1: and then I just feel like defeated again.
- 10:00Speaker 4: I'm just ready for a new challenge.
- 10:02Speaker 3: Yeah, understandable. It's been such a journey for you.
- 10:06Speaker 2: And also that doesn't mean that it's less frustrating in moments,
- 10:12Speaker 2: although this is the theme lately for me, is that
- 10:15Speaker 2: clarity might not always give you what it is that
- 10:17Speaker 2: you want, it will always give you what you need.
- 10:21Speaker 2: And so now you have the information that you need,
- 10:23Speaker 2: you say that I'm ready for a new challenge. I'm
- 10:25Speaker 2: ready to move forward. What do you anticipate that looking like?
- 10:28Speaker 1: For you, first, it was like, okay, well, you know,
- 10:32Speaker 1: it's just this like big question mark. There's actually I
- 10:34Speaker 1: feel like a million things that I could do that
- 10:37Speaker 1: could be fun, that I could be good at, that
- 10:38Speaker 1: I could use my skill set for. And but that's
- 10:43Speaker 1: that's actually really overwhelming to be like, there's so many.
- 10:46Speaker 1: I'm like, but I don't know which one. You don't
- 10:47Speaker 1: know which one is going to make me feel fulfilled.
- 10:50Speaker 1: And there's this kind of sadness about like, I don't
- 10:52Speaker 1: know if there's anything that will make me feel the
- 10:55Speaker 1: way that trying to go to the Olympics made me
- 10:57Speaker 1: feel like that's an incredible like journey to be on
- 11:02Speaker 1: and it's it's hard to imagine something that I set
- 11:05Speaker 1: at a desk and like try to. I don't know,
- 11:09Speaker 1: it's just like hard to imagine. So there's there's a
- 11:11Speaker 1: big like this is just a big shift and change
- 11:14Speaker 1: in everything you know that I've known for the past however,
- 11:18Speaker 1: like ten years, and it's it is not lost on
- 11:22Speaker 1: me that this year is the summer the ten year
- 11:25Speaker 1: anniversary of the summer I went to the Olympics. Yeah,
- 11:28Speaker 1: and I like, I don't know, I like kind of
- 11:30Speaker 1: things that fit and make sense and feel, you know,
- 11:33Speaker 1: and it's like ten years and this is I didn't
- 11:35Speaker 1: realize that until.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Like a month ago.
- 11:39Speaker 1: I guess my parents were I was with my parents
- 11:41Speaker 1: and a few weeks ago they were in Colorado visiting,
- 11:44Speaker 1: and my dad was like ten years ago, we were
- 11:46Speaker 1: at the Olympic trials together like this weekend, and I
- 11:49Speaker 1: was like, oh shit, like, yeah, that's.
- 11:51Speaker 4: Crazy, you know.
- 11:52Speaker 1: I think it was July fourth of twenty sixteen, and
- 11:56Speaker 1: so yeah, it's definitely it's going to take me some
- 11:58Speaker 1: time to figure out what like all those other pieces
- 12:01Speaker 1: look like. Getting a lot of pressure from my other
- 12:04Speaker 1: half to like start a family and all those things,
- 12:08Speaker 1: which probably is like, yeah, coming down the pipeline.
- 12:11Speaker 4: But I'm also really interested in this new sport of
- 12:13Speaker 4: high rocks. Oh okay, high rocks. Yeah you've heard it
- 12:16Speaker 4: here first. Yeah.
- 12:19Speaker 1: I just I feel like it's not that often that
- 12:21Speaker 1: a new sport kind of like takes over the world,
- 12:24Speaker 1: not you know, I feel like the US is even
- 12:26Speaker 1: like a little bit late to figuring out high rocks
- 12:29Speaker 1: takes over the world that is popular and fits within
- 12:33Speaker 1: your strengths as an athlete, and not only like the
- 12:38Speaker 1: actual exercises and like the movements, like the running and
- 12:42Speaker 1: the strength part of it, but also like the venue
- 12:45Speaker 1: being very like like I tried trathon for a little bit,
- 12:50Speaker 1: and I tried to do law course and I wasn't
- 12:53Speaker 1: the physical exercise of it.
- 12:55Speaker 4: I really enjoyed.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It was the setup and the venue of like you're
- 12:58Speaker 1: out there just there's no one and you're just like
- 13:01Speaker 1: time trialing on your bike for like two and a
- 13:03Speaker 1: half hours, and I was just like to say't it
- 13:08Speaker 1: that's not my I don't I like the energy and
- 13:11Speaker 1: like I love indoor track, Yeah, so high rocks is
- 13:13Speaker 1: almost like an indoor track but with like you know,
- 13:15Speaker 1: different activities. So I kind of checked a lot of
- 13:18Speaker 1: boxes for me, and enough people had told me like, hey,
- 13:21Speaker 1: I've tried it or you know, I'm into this and
- 13:23Speaker 1: I think you'd be good at I think you should
- 13:24Speaker 1: give it a try. And I was like all right,
- 13:26Speaker 1: like some you know, the universe is pushing me in
- 13:28Speaker 1: this way, like let me just try it out.
- 13:30Speaker 4: So I meant the beginning of my little high Rocks journey.
- 13:32Speaker 4: But what does it look like at the beginning, Like
- 13:35Speaker 4: what does that involve for you?
- 13:36Speaker 1: Yeah? I well, I had to take I did an
- 13:38Speaker 1: injection in my foot when I found out about the injury,
- 13:41Speaker 1: like the old injury, I decided to try an injection
- 13:45Speaker 1: of some eggs zomes, which is like a cell signaler.
- 13:48Speaker 1: It basically tells your cells to go like sen send
- 13:51Speaker 1: stem cells and go heal that area. Didn't really work,
- 13:55Speaker 1: but I took I did that. I tried that and
- 13:57Speaker 1: took eight weeks completely off no running cross training.
- 14:00Speaker 2: This is when your foot was on the boot. Yes, okay,
- 14:02Speaker 2: like in end of March. Gotcha.
- 14:05Speaker 1: And I was like, okay, I've never taken this much
- 14:07Speaker 1: time completely Like usually I'm injured and I'm in the
- 14:10Speaker 1: pool and I'm on the bike and I'm on the
- 14:11Speaker 1: start master and the elliptical and like just like no
- 14:14Speaker 1: losing fitness and having that kind of really motivated to
- 14:18Speaker 1: train cross train, you know, And I just didn't have
- 14:21Speaker 1: it in me this time. I was like, I can't,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I can't even think about getting in the pool.
- 14:26Speaker 4: You desired to get on the bike.
- 14:27Speaker 1: The most I could do was like do yoga or
- 14:30Speaker 1: some like plates. So coming off of that eight weeks,
- 14:32Speaker 1: I was the most out of shape I've ever been,
- 14:35Speaker 1: and I just started doing like some light rowing.
- 14:37Speaker 4: I was like, let me see about this row machine.
- 14:40Speaker 4: Have you ever done rowing? Oh? Yeah, it's such a
- 14:42Speaker 4: good workout. So I started doing that.
- 14:44Speaker 1: And I've never done ski erg before, so I started
- 14:46Speaker 1: doing a little bit of that and just kind of
- 14:48Speaker 1: messing around the weight room. One of the girls on
- 14:50Speaker 1: my team, Annie Rodenvels, is my weight training buddy, So
- 14:53Speaker 1: twice a week she's lifting weights with a strength trainer
- 14:56Speaker 1: and bolder named Aaron Carson, and I just joined them.
- 14:58Speaker 1: I'm like for the social ass respect of it, for
- 15:00Speaker 1: like my mental health, I need to be like doing something,
- 15:04Speaker 1: So I'll strength train with them. A couple of times
- 15:05Speaker 1: a week, but it's just like runner strength training. It's
- 15:07Speaker 1: not for high rocks, but at least something. And then yeah,
- 15:10Speaker 1: started building in like the row and the ski, and
- 15:13Speaker 1: then I was able to start running again. So then
- 15:15Speaker 1: I started doing I've done like three workouts where you
- 15:18Speaker 1: do like run for three or two or three minutes,
- 15:22Speaker 1: and then you do one of the exercises and then
- 15:24Speaker 1: you like, I'm back and forth on the treadmill and
- 15:26Speaker 1: doing the different exercises and I was like, oh wait,
- 15:30Speaker 1: this is fun, Like it's really hard because I'm really
- 15:32Speaker 1: out of shape. I'm like, oh shit, like this is
- 15:34Speaker 1: really hard, and I'm out altitude because I'm in Boulder,
- 15:37Speaker 1: so it's like fifty five hundred feet who it was challenging.
- 15:40Speaker 1: And then a couple of weeks ago, I did a
- 15:42Speaker 1: little sim with a friend of mine, Landy Marshaant is
- 15:46Speaker 1: a marathon er for Team Canada and she's been doing
- 15:49Speaker 1: some high rocks, so she sent she brought me to
- 15:51Speaker 1: her High Rocks gym and we did it as doubles
- 15:53Speaker 1: and it was just it's like an untimed thing. It's
- 15:56Speaker 1: not an official thing. You like, we started our own
- 15:58Speaker 1: like timers and stuff, but I have all the stations
- 16:00Speaker 1: set up, and I have a one k loop around
- 16:03Speaker 1: the parking lot that you do for the run, and
- 16:05Speaker 1: so we got to like go through it all and
- 16:07Speaker 1: kind of like practice like pretend and that was really fun.
- 16:10Speaker 4: So are you registered for high Rocks?
- 16:12Speaker 1: So I signed up for the Denver High Rocks, which
- 16:14Speaker 1: is in November.
- 16:15Speaker 4: Solo or doubles. I signed up solo.
- 16:17Speaker 1: I was like, I kind of want to like try
- 16:19Speaker 1: one by myself and like see how it is, which
- 16:21Speaker 1: might have been a mistake.
- 16:22Speaker 4: I feel like maybe I should maybe I.
- 16:24Speaker 1: Should start as doubles and like build my way into it.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I just connected with Alyssa's world champion and she said
- 16:33Speaker 1: that she started with doubles and then kind of like
- 16:36Speaker 1: built it. I think your first one was a double
- 16:37Speaker 1: on or second one as a solo.
- 16:39Speaker 4: So I don't know. I signed up for solo your own.
- 16:42Speaker 2: I might regret your own a little scary, don't be yes,
- 16:46Speaker 2: it's scary because it's unknown. And also there is so
- 16:51Speaker 2: much pointing to runners being really capable of excelling at
- 16:56Speaker 2: high rocks, because although you can be super strong, almost
- 17:00Speaker 2: easier to get strong than it is to get fast
- 17:04Speaker 2: at running and so you have this really stellar base
- 17:07Speaker 2: of endurance, which is why we saw someone like Alyssa
- 17:10Speaker 2: be so successful at World Championships. I got to see
- 17:13Speaker 2: her win in Stockholm and it was you were there.
- 17:15Speaker 4: It was so cool. So my first trip to Stockholm,
- 17:18Speaker 4: no way. Yeah, oh my god, I didn't realize you
- 17:20Speaker 4: were irl at the World Chace. I mean I was
- 17:22Speaker 4: not everywhere.
- 17:23Speaker 2: To be clear, I was not there to compete, but
- 17:28Speaker 2: I did get to go as a guest of Red Bull,
- 17:30Speaker 2: and I also was sitting the kool aid.
- 17:33Speaker 3: So now I like you.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I only we can do double, Okay, I was gonna say,
- 17:38Speaker 2: because I'm not trying to do a.
- 17:39Speaker 4: S we can do doubles.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I'm recruiting all my double partners. I'm like, I just
- 17:44Speaker 1: wanted to be this fun thing that's I don't know,
- 17:46Speaker 1: I feel like, but.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Colleen, you cannot you cannot dangle the cherry in front
- 17:50Speaker 2: of my face.
- 17:50Speaker 4: You can't be like, we should do double. Then you're like, but.
- 17:53Speaker 2: I also have approached at least six to eight other
- 17:56Speaker 2: potential doubles partners.
- 17:57Speaker 1: These people are like, yeah, yea, I'll do with you.
- 18:00Speaker 1: And I have to like patch my bets here because
- 18:02Speaker 1: I'm in it. Well I'm not serious. They say yes
- 18:04Speaker 1: to me and then they're like I can't trust Like are.
- 18:06Speaker 4: You are you in?
- 18:07Speaker 1: Oh?
- 18:07Speaker 4: No, I'm committed. Okay, perfect. So there there's a double, Well,
- 18:13Speaker 4: there's a doubles.
- 18:14Speaker 2: There's a high Rocks in Paris that I'm actually really
- 18:16Speaker 2: enthusiastic about.
- 18:17Speaker 4: So is this the one in the train station? It's stunning.
- 18:19Speaker 1: I saw this video on Instagram and I was like,
- 18:22Speaker 1: you heard it here first?
- 18:23Speaker 4: That one. I want to do that one.
- 18:25Speaker 2: Colleen Quickley and I are doing double Paris Paris Doubles,
- 18:28Speaker 2: High Rocks Shake. So there's so much to double click
- 18:49Speaker 2: on from this entire monologue. One of the things that
- 18:52Speaker 2: I want to start with is you talking about your teammates.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Obviously, over the last few years you building Maridia.
- 18:58Speaker 2: It's been such a passion project for you, something that
- 19:01Speaker 2: you have been excited about since twenty twenty one. Now
- 19:04Speaker 2: it has come to life. How do you feel about
- 19:08Speaker 2: it being in this place and you coming to this
- 19:10Speaker 2: realization with where you're at now, how do you foresee
- 19:13Speaker 2: yourself interacting with the training group moving forward and what
- 19:16Speaker 2: feels good for you?
- 19:17Speaker 1: Yeah, that's actually one thing that I felt like something
- 19:20Speaker 1: clicked into place with that too, where I always from
- 19:23Speaker 1: the beginning felt a little bit weird about being an
- 19:27Speaker 1: athlete on the team, like being a currently competing athlete
- 19:30Speaker 1: going to a SES trying to make teams still like trying.
- 19:33Speaker 1: I was in racism, my teammates were in. But I'm
- 19:35Speaker 1: also in this leadership position where you know, I'm the
- 19:39Speaker 1: team captain or you know, the team manager, whatever you
- 19:41Speaker 1: want to call me is.
- 19:42Speaker 4: Fine by me.
- 19:44Speaker 1: And I have, yeah, i have this like other role
- 19:46Speaker 1: of like trying to figure out how to tell the
- 19:47Speaker 1: stories and support the athletes and manage the whole team.
- 19:50Speaker 1: But I'm also on the team, and there was always
- 19:53Speaker 1: like it felt a little bit awkward to me to
- 19:55Speaker 1: be able to try and do both of those things.
- 19:57Speaker 4: Yeah, and so I actually felt.
- 19:59Speaker 1: Like when I realize like, oh, maybe it's time to
- 20:01Speaker 1: try something else and move on from the track world,
- 20:04Speaker 1: it was like, oh, that actually, I think is good
- 20:07Speaker 1: for the team too. You know, I think it's good
- 20:09Speaker 1: for me and it's good for everyone for me to
- 20:11Speaker 1: have my own thing over here that I do and
- 20:13Speaker 1: the athletes are you know, I'm still a runner. I
- 20:16Speaker 1: still keep my identity as a runner. Which was really
- 20:18Speaker 1: important to me. But it's in a different way, and
- 20:21Speaker 1: you know, I'm not going to be competing against the girls,
- 20:23Speaker 1: although I really would like to convince any and all
- 20:26Speaker 1: of them to do doubles with And there is a
- 20:29Speaker 1: relay version of high Rocks where you have four people
- 20:32Speaker 1: do a high I didn't know that existed. I just
- 20:35Speaker 1: recently found this out of four people in Relafe, four
- 20:38Speaker 1: people on Meridia.
- 20:38Speaker 2: It's all together, it's all happening for okay, well, but
- 20:43Speaker 2: it works. It makes me feel really happy for you
- 20:45Speaker 2: that you do feel like holistically this is kind of
- 20:49Speaker 2: coming into alignment a better designation.
- 20:51Speaker 4: Totally.
- 20:52Speaker 1: Yeah, And I definitely, you know, I love what we've
- 20:55Speaker 1: built with Meridia, and the athletes we have on the
- 20:57Speaker 1: team right now are just incredible human beings that I
- 21:00Speaker 1: love being in partnership with and working with. And it
- 21:03Speaker 1: feels so like it just feels like we're in a
- 21:05Speaker 1: great spot with the with the athletes that we have,
- 21:08Speaker 1: and so I don't want to, you know, I didn't
- 21:10Speaker 1: want this to have to be like, Okay, well, that
- 21:12Speaker 1: means like Mridia is over. And it was immediately clear
- 21:15Speaker 1: to me that it's the opposite of that it's like, oh,
- 21:17Speaker 1: this is actually what's good for the team and good
- 21:19Speaker 1: for me.
- 21:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:20Speaker 2: At the same time, the other thing to double click
- 21:22Speaker 2: on Boulder. Yeah there you are, yes, there, You've had
- 21:26Speaker 2: nothing going on over the past few years, so to
- 21:28Speaker 2: then throw this major move and then on top of
- 21:31Speaker 2: the move, a major renovation on your plate.
- 21:33Speaker 3: How has that felt? How are you liking Bolder?
- 21:35Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 21:36Speaker 1: I feel like Boulder was there the whole time, and like,
- 21:38Speaker 1: what was that? I was totally sleeping on her. I
- 21:40Speaker 1: don't know why I didn't realize that. It was just
- 21:42Speaker 1: I heard other people talking about it, this you know
- 21:45Speaker 1: place called Boulder, but I hadn't been until March I
- 21:49Speaker 1: think it was of twenty twenty five.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Kevin and I.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Landed there kind of late at night and we're at
- 21:56Speaker 1: a rental spot just probably like three three or four
- 22:00Speaker 1: blocks off Pearl Street, and woke up that next morning.
- 22:03Speaker 1: My dog Six wakes me up in the morning, probably
- 22:06Speaker 1: six six thirty, her name is six, and she wakes
- 22:08Speaker 1: me up at like six or six thirty in the
- 22:09Speaker 1: morning by licking my face, and we were I was like, yeah,
- 22:12Speaker 1: up late the night before traveling, but she doesn't care.
- 22:15Speaker 1: So we're up and I'm like all right, like let's
- 22:17Speaker 1: go walk around or whatever. And we walk through three
- 22:20Speaker 1: or four blocks down to Pearl Street and I would
- 22:22Speaker 1: immediately I was like, oh, like this feels like Abbot
- 22:26Speaker 1: Kenney does in the morning at six thirty. That's where
- 22:29Speaker 1: we were based before, was in Venice Beach, and then
- 22:33Speaker 1: we're a walk off of ab McKinney, and the morning
- 22:35Speaker 1: Abbert Kenny has this quiet there's only a couple of
- 22:39Speaker 1: coffee shops open, but there's a ton of people walking
- 22:41Speaker 1: around with their dogs. It just feels like kind of
- 22:44Speaker 1: quiet at six or six thirty in the morning, but
- 22:46Speaker 1: you feel this like potential energy of like later on today,
- 22:50Speaker 1: you just know the street is going to be popping.
- 22:53Speaker 4: Yeah, And Pearl Street has the same thing. We're in
- 22:56Speaker 4: the morning. It's quiet.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Most of the stores are closed because it's like retail stuff,
- 23:00Speaker 1: but people are out walking their dogs and there's three
- 23:02Speaker 1: or four coffee shops that are bustling and people are
- 23:05Speaker 1: getting moving and stuff, and you're just like, oh, this
- 23:08Speaker 1: is like I don't know, there's just this feeling to
- 23:10Speaker 1: it of like oh, this is gonna be like cool later,
- 23:13Speaker 1: you know. And I felt that immediately on Pearl Street,
- 23:16Speaker 1: and I was like, ooh, I like, I like it here.
- 23:18Speaker 1: And then we started running and seeing like all the
- 23:20Speaker 1: trails and all the dirt roads and all the bike
- 23:22Speaker 1: paths and just like the infrastructure that's set up for
- 23:25Speaker 1: people who like to be outside. Yeah, which I immediately
- 23:28Speaker 1: was just super impressed with. And yeah, and then Kevin,
- 23:32Speaker 1: my partner, found this seven thousand square foot nineteen oh
- 23:37Speaker 1: five historic mansion two blocks off of Pearl Street that
- 23:40Speaker 1: was being used as a commercial space for like fifty
- 23:43Speaker 1: plus years. It was on the market for almost three years.
- 23:46Speaker 1: They couldn't find a buyer for it. And he just
- 23:49Speaker 1: was like he came, yeah, came to me with this
- 23:50Speaker 1: idea of like, hey, we should we should buy this
- 23:53Speaker 1: place and turn it back into residential And I was like,
- 23:56Speaker 1: what they like, that's a huge project, and yeah, I've
- 24:01Speaker 1: just launched this team like five seconds ago. I'm pretty
- 24:04Speaker 1: like tunnel vision on figuring this puzzle out and stuff.
- 24:07Speaker 1: But he had the vision for it, and so we
- 24:09Speaker 1: ended up going for it, and we live in the
- 24:11Speaker 1: house now and we are making plans to like completely
- 24:14Speaker 1: gut renovate it.
- 24:16Speaker 4: It's gorgeous.
- 24:17Speaker 1: The bones are incredible, but it's going to be like
- 24:20Speaker 1: a really big, really fun.
- 24:21Speaker 4: Project that we're going to do together, and we are I.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Mean, I'm sure we want to get into YouTube, but
- 24:26Speaker 1: we also want to create a YouTube channel about like
- 24:29Speaker 1: renovating it and have that be kind of part of
- 24:31Speaker 1: this like next phase of you know, like life after.
- 24:35Speaker 1: If I'm not running around and like going to practice
- 24:37Speaker 1: all the time, I can have other things in my
- 24:39Speaker 1: life that I can spend energy on. It's definitely, like
- 24:42Speaker 1: I will say, kind of Kevin's like he has the
- 24:46Speaker 1: vision for it, but I am a good worker and
- 24:49Speaker 1: I can execute on projects if given, if you know,
- 24:53Speaker 1: given some direction.
- 24:54Speaker 4: So we're yeah, we're doing it together. It's you're doing
- 24:56Speaker 4: it really fun.
- 24:57Speaker 2: It's as someone who for the last fifteen years of
- 25:01Speaker 2: her life has exclusively lived in rental apartments, I am
- 25:07Speaker 2: incapable of concepting what it would require to take out.
- 25:13Speaker 3: A project like that.
- 25:14Speaker 4: It's a lot.
- 25:14Speaker 1: We also own the parking lot across the street from
- 25:17Speaker 1: the house. It's like a twelve car parking lot, which
- 25:21Speaker 1: is crazy. So yeah, there's a lot of details, Like,
- 25:23Speaker 1: there's so many. Last week Kevin was like, oh, there's
- 25:26Speaker 1: someone coming to do backflow testing.
- 25:29Speaker 4: At the house and I was like, what is that?
- 25:32Speaker 3: Yeah, what is backflow testing?
- 25:34Speaker 1: Oh, he's like, it has to be done every year.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Apparently if you don't get it done, you get a fine.
- 25:38Speaker 1: And they have it's like independent companies that come over
- 25:41Speaker 1: and they make sure that your water, your sewage water
- 25:45Speaker 1: is not coming back up.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Oh well, good, sounds important.
- 25:47Speaker 2: Yeah, this is like when you're younger and like maybe,
- 25:51Speaker 2: I mean, I'm very lucky that I have a great
- 25:53Speaker 2: relationship with my father, who was the one that told
- 25:55Speaker 2: me that I needed to get my car like emissions tested.
- 25:57Speaker 2: But like if you don't just so much you have
- 26:00Speaker 2: someone to tell you these things, Yeah, what would you do?
- 26:03Speaker 4: Totally?
- 26:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I ended up having to like switch my plates
- 26:06Speaker 1: some register my car in Colorado after being in Arizona,
- 26:10Speaker 1: and I just did it, even though we've been there
- 26:12Speaker 1: for like a while, but I just keep putting it off.
- 26:14Speaker 4: I lost my I.
- 26:15Speaker 1: Couldn't find my title for the car, and then we
- 26:17Speaker 1: had to switch the car insurance are like all the
- 26:19Speaker 1: paperwork things. And then I get there and actually someone
- 26:22Speaker 1: had had warned me, but you're supposed to change your
- 26:24Speaker 1: plates within ninety days of moving to the otherwise you
- 26:27Speaker 1: get a twenty five dollars a month feet every month
- 26:30Speaker 1: up to the cap it at one hundred dollars. Well
- 26:33Speaker 1: this no, no, I already switched it over and they
- 26:36Speaker 1: cappened one hundred dollars.
- 26:37Speaker 4: So the woman was like I was doing the things.
- 26:39Speaker 1: She's like, there's your you know you're gonna get a
- 26:42Speaker 1: hundred dollars fine for not having And I was like, girl,
- 26:44Speaker 1: take my money, like yeah, it's been way.
- 26:46Speaker 4: Over ninety days. It's one hundred dollars. I'm gonna be fine. Yeah,
- 26:52Speaker 4: take it.
- 26:52Speaker 1: But there's certain things that fall through the cracks like
- 26:54Speaker 1: that for sure, And always we're learning new things about
- 26:58Speaker 1: like for example, last weekend was going to clean the
- 27:03Speaker 1: front porch of the house.
- 27:05Speaker 4: Just I left and he was like, I'm gonna, like,
- 27:08Speaker 4: you know, power wash it.
- 27:10Speaker 1: Yeah, but just with the hose. Like we have a
- 27:11Speaker 1: pretty strong hose, so we don't have a power washer.
- 27:13Speaker 1: But he's like, I'm just gonna, like, you know, it's
- 27:15Speaker 1: like it gets dirty, there's like sticky stuff wherever.
- 27:18Speaker 4: I'm just gonna wash off. I'm like, okay, well I leave,
- 27:19Speaker 4: I come back.
- 27:21Speaker 1: This man has started he basically he was like I
- 27:27Speaker 1: started doing that, but there was grime in between the
- 27:31Speaker 1: you know, porch is over one hundred years old, so
- 27:33Speaker 1: he's like, there's grime in between the boards. Yeah, And
- 27:36Speaker 1: so he went downstairs and he got this attachment for
- 27:39Speaker 1: the drill that's basically like metal. It's like these little
- 27:43Speaker 1: teeny tiny metal skewers that spin around, and it's used
- 27:48Speaker 1: for We used it for refinishing a butcher, massive thousand
- 27:53Speaker 1: pound butcher block that we put in the kitchen. Okay,
- 27:56Speaker 1: so we still had that in the basement. So we
- 27:57Speaker 1: went downstairs and got that and takes that to the
- 27:59Speaker 1: front porch. Oh and obviously the paint is coming off,
- 28:02Speaker 1: and he realizes the gray paint. Underneath the gray paint,
- 28:04Speaker 1: there's a pair of a lair of white paint. And
- 28:07Speaker 1: he's like, oh interesting. So he I get back. He
- 28:09Speaker 1: is stripping off the gray paint and actually waiting for
- 28:13Speaker 1: it to dry because he wants to stand off the
- 28:15Speaker 1: white paint and see what the boards look like underneath
- 28:18Speaker 1: the white paint. And I'm like, oh, now we're redoing
- 28:20Speaker 1: the front part. Okay, I thought we were just cleaning
- 28:24Speaker 1: the front port. So that unfortunately became a bit of
- 28:27Speaker 1: a bit of a tiff. But things like that are
- 28:31Speaker 1: constantly happening in the house where you're like, oh my god,
- 28:34Speaker 1: this was supposed to be like a little thing, like
- 28:35Speaker 1: a little Saturday afternoon and now it's like, now we
- 28:39Speaker 1: have another project on our hands, so you have to
- 28:41Speaker 1: commit to some stuff like that that you just yeah,
- 28:44Speaker 1: you won't get these kind of adventures in a rental
- 28:46Speaker 1: property in New York City.
- 28:47Speaker 4: It's just so different. World comes to do it for you.
- 28:51Speaker 3: I mean, I would personally be very excited to follow
- 28:53Speaker 3: this on YouTube.
- 28:54Speaker 4: Yeah, okay, good, good good.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Yeah. My problem is I think I'm gonna need to
- 28:58Speaker 1: edit all of it. Oh that's yeah, kind of time consuming.
- 29:02Speaker 1: But okay, so while we're here, yeah, YouTube, I'm struggling with,
- 29:07Speaker 1: like what do people want on YouTube? Because do they
- 29:10Speaker 1: want like, for example, Ali Ostrander crushes on YouTube. Lauren
- 29:15Speaker 1: Gregory just started on YouTube recently, crushing very like raw
- 29:20Speaker 1: like Lauren Gregory edits on iMovie.
- 29:22Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying, Like I feel like movie
- 29:25Speaker 2: for the record is not very intuitive respect to the
- 29:27Speaker 2: people that that work on that, but I try using.
- 29:31Speaker 4: It and I would do not have fressed all time. Yeah,
- 29:34Speaker 4: it's so frustrated, but yeah, I mean it. You know,
- 29:37Speaker 4: she does it.
- 29:37Speaker 1: So in my mind, it was like, I really wanted
- 29:40Speaker 1: our YouTube to be like highly like high quality produce,
- 29:43Speaker 1: really well produced, like these beautiful stories and stuff, and
- 29:47Speaker 1: so far it feels like that's not what people want.
- 29:50Speaker 2: So I think that you're answering your own question, right,
- 29:53Speaker 2: Like you're going to these channels that aren't really reinventing
- 29:58Speaker 2: the wheel. It's mostly stream of consciousness. They probably have
- 30:01Speaker 2: one or two cameras they use, one of them being
- 30:03Speaker 2: an iPhone and one of them being a handheld, right,
- 30:05Speaker 2: And that's.
- 30:05Speaker 4: What they're creating.
- 30:06Speaker 2: And I think that that seems to be for the
- 30:09Speaker 2: most part, unless we're talking about someone like a mister Beast,
- 30:12Speaker 2: Like the quality excitement of YouTube is you're getting so
- 30:15Speaker 2: much raw, and I think that also translates to the
- 30:18Speaker 2: creators and people that most people want to follow.
- 30:21Speaker 1: Now.
- 30:22Speaker 2: People want to keep up with you because they can
- 30:24Speaker 2: relate to you. They don't want to keep up with
- 30:26Speaker 2: people that live a quote unquote perfect life that's not
- 30:31Speaker 2: very realistic. Yeah, So it's like for me right now
- 30:34Speaker 2: on YouTube, the only thing that's going live is the
- 30:37Speaker 2: Friday segment, which I call five minute Friday. I'm still
- 30:40Speaker 2: working on like the production things that have to go
- 30:42Speaker 2: into getting the Tuesday episodes up on the up on
- 30:44Speaker 2: the platform. But I'm just yap into a microphone for
- 30:48Speaker 2: twelve minutes and I'm like, cool, have a good weekend,
- 30:50Speaker 2: Like that's that's it. Yeah, And for me, well for me,
- 30:53Speaker 2: that's doable, right because I'm not editing that, Like I
- 30:57Speaker 2: am just yap in and then I'm answering a listener
- 31:00Speaker 2: question and then throwing on an intro and an outro
- 31:03Speaker 2: and say, see you lead published, right, So I am
- 31:07Speaker 2: not one to give YouTube advice. However, I too, am
- 31:10Speaker 2: curious about what it is that makes people stick, and
- 31:14Speaker 2: I think that it's kind of for me similar to
- 31:16Speaker 2: when I started podcasting. When I started podcasting, I wasn't
- 31:18Speaker 2: listening yet to a ton of podcasts, just like I'm
- 31:21Speaker 2: not a huge consumer of YouTube. I mean, but similar
- 31:25Speaker 2: to when someone says I want to write a book
- 31:28Speaker 2: or I want to be an author, the first question
- 31:30Speaker 2: you ask yourself is are you writing? And if you're
- 31:32Speaker 2: not writing, then how can you expect to be someone
- 31:34Speaker 2: who becomes an author? Well, if I'm not watching YouTube,
- 31:37Speaker 2: how can I expect to understand or really do much
- 31:39Speaker 2: more with YouTube.
- 31:40Speaker 3: So I'm you know, I'm in the weeds.
- 31:42Speaker 1: I know I'm getting into it tune, I'm like seeing,
- 31:44Speaker 1: I'm like watching more YouTube because I think for so
- 31:48Speaker 1: long I was really only focused on Instagram, only consuming
- 31:51Speaker 1: Instagram and only posting Instagram yep.
- 31:53Speaker 4: And I personally got really burned out on Instagram.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Like I just am so sick of the fifteen second
- 32:01Speaker 1: just like bullshit content on Instagram. I'm just sorry, like
- 32:05Speaker 1: the quick stuff, My god, Like what are we doing?
- 32:07Speaker 1: Like you can't share anything of value in ten seconds?
- 32:11Speaker 1: Like you just I need time to be able to
- 32:13Speaker 1: like tell the stories and especially with the team, to
- 32:16Speaker 1: introduce the athletes to an audience and have them care
- 32:20Speaker 1: that Gracie Hide made the mile World Championship team for
- 32:24Speaker 1: tem USA and the five k team for Team USA
- 32:27Speaker 1: and she's never even made a team before and now
- 32:29Speaker 1: she gets to choose which event she wants to do
- 32:30Speaker 1: with the World Championships, Like this is amazing. But if
- 32:34Speaker 1: they don't know Gracy Hide and what they've been through,
- 32:36Speaker 1: if they don't know Gracy Hide actually quit the sport
- 32:39Speaker 1: of running to three years ago because she was dealing
- 32:42Speaker 1: with an eating disorder so severe that she couldn't like
- 32:45Speaker 1: she really couldn't run at all, and she completely quit
- 32:47Speaker 1: the sport moved to Almosa, Colorado to chase a boyfriend
- 32:51Speaker 1: that she had been dating at the time. Was working
- 32:53Speaker 1: at like a like an LA Fitness, like a it
- 32:57Speaker 1: wasn't LA Fitness, but was like A Fitness or whatever. Yeah,
- 33:01Speaker 1: one of those like as an instructor and like doing
- 33:04Speaker 1: like workout, you know, workouts at the gym, like completely
- 33:07Speaker 1: not a runner, and like now she's going to Worlds
- 33:09Speaker 1: for Tmusa and Copenhagen in September. But if you don't
- 33:12Speaker 1: know all that stuff, like why would you care about
- 33:14Speaker 1: the fifteen second bits saying like I'm going to Worlds,
- 33:18Speaker 1: you know, and I need more time to like have
- 33:21Speaker 1: people understand that. So then yeah, we were like, okay,
- 33:23Speaker 1: we got to do YouTube because I figured that out
- 33:26Speaker 1: like early on in my own career of like I
- 33:29Speaker 1: just trded telling people everything about my life. Yeah, and
- 33:32Speaker 1: then they thought they knew me, and then they gave
- 33:34Speaker 1: a shit about if I was doing well, and when
- 33:36Speaker 1: I wasn't doing well, they also cared about that. And
- 33:39Speaker 1: so I'm trying to figure out how to do that
- 33:40Speaker 1: with these women, and I think the only way is
- 33:43Speaker 1: to give more time and space to like tell their
- 33:45Speaker 1: stories and have them tell Like I'm really adamant that
- 33:48Speaker 1: it's giving them the support they need, but it's they
- 33:50Speaker 1: have to tell their own story in their own words, right,
- 33:52Speaker 1: they have to be given the microphone to do that.
- 33:55Speaker 2: I usually wait until the end of the show to
- 33:57Speaker 2: go in this direction, but I actually think that I
- 34:00Speaker 2: want to have a bit more of a conversation about it.
- 34:03Speaker 2: So when you have people that are coming to your
- 34:07Speaker 2: socials or coming to get to know you, what is
- 34:10Speaker 2: it that you want them to see?
- 34:12Speaker 3: Who is it that you want to meet them with?
- 34:15Speaker 4: Yeah? For myself personally, no, no, no, for you Yeah.
- 34:18Speaker 4: I mean I don't know. I think it changes.
- 34:20Speaker 1: When I was younger, I definitely wanted more like I
- 34:24Speaker 1: was the Team USA, like steeple chase, like Olympic runner,
- 34:30Speaker 1: and I had more of a strong identity and like
- 34:32Speaker 1: the performance side and what I was doing athletically. And
- 34:37Speaker 1: I feel that I have let that like kind of
- 34:39Speaker 1: naturally shift into like Okay, yeah, like that was an
- 34:42Speaker 1: amazing time of my life, but like it's not really
- 34:46Speaker 1: where I am now, and I need to kind of
- 34:48Speaker 1: be able to let that go in order to connect
- 34:51Speaker 1: with Like, I think the people who followed me through
- 34:54Speaker 1: that time, they're also growing and changing, right, so like
- 34:56Speaker 1: allowing us all to evolve. So I think now it's
- 34:59Speaker 1: more about like I'm kind of this, Like I don't
- 35:02Speaker 1: know if you want to just say, like multi sport athlete,
- 35:04Speaker 1: but I like, I love so many I love running.
- 35:07Speaker 1: It's still my favorite way to move my body. But
- 35:08Speaker 1: I do so many other things that are not running.
- 35:11Speaker 1: And I've also really let the other things in my
- 35:14Speaker 1: life that aren't athletic at all creep into who I
- 35:18Speaker 1: am and how I show up as well. Really just
- 35:21Speaker 1: from a point of like this is genuinely what I like.
- 35:24Speaker 1: I love doing craft projects, I love being artistic, and
- 35:28Speaker 1: these are genuinely things that I like that I don't
- 35:30Speaker 1: want to have to like, you know, hide or like
- 35:33Speaker 1: not show because.
- 35:35Speaker 4: Oh but I'm the Olympic steeple chaser.
- 35:37Speaker 1: So it's a little bit more confusing because, yeah, I
- 35:39Speaker 1: think when you come to my page, you're like, there's
- 35:41Speaker 1: a lot going on, Like I have a lot of
- 35:43Speaker 1: different things happening, and maybe a social media marketing professional
- 35:47Speaker 1: would tell me, like, you have too much going on
- 35:49Speaker 1: you have to like narrow it down.
- 35:51Speaker 4: But maybe that does hurt me, but I'm like, I can't.
- 35:54Speaker 1: Like That's just I have a lot of different interests
- 35:56Speaker 1: and like a lot of different things happening, and I
- 35:59Speaker 1: want to be able to like show all of them because.
- 36:01Speaker 4: I feel like that's a more genuine, like portrayal of
- 36:03Speaker 4: who I am.
- 36:04Speaker 2: I feel like it's also probably been interesting for you
- 36:06Speaker 2: as you navigate stepping into your own beyond that original chapter.
- 36:10Speaker 2: You've had to have conversations with brands individuals that maybe
- 36:15Speaker 2: wanted you to do something or wanted you to be
- 36:17Speaker 2: a certain something for them, and that doesn't align with
- 36:20Speaker 2: who you are anymore.
- 36:21Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely.
- 36:22Speaker 1: And I mean I've had a lot of sponsors that
- 36:24Speaker 1: have stayed on for a long time, which is like
- 36:27Speaker 1: I had, So I had to get over a lot
- 36:28Speaker 1: of like imposter syndrome more just like feeling like, you know,
- 36:32Speaker 1: letting down brands that I thought they signed me to
- 36:35Speaker 1: be the Olympic Steeples Taste girl that I was at
- 36:38Speaker 1: the beginning, and then when I wasn't making teams anymore,
- 36:40Speaker 1: like even with lou Lemon when I signed with them
- 36:43Speaker 1: in twenty twenty one, I had never not made the team.
- 36:46Speaker 1: I've made the team every year, even in an off
- 36:48Speaker 1: year when we only had Indoor Worlds, I mean the
- 36:50Speaker 1: indoor Worlds team. Like I was always making the team,
- 36:53Speaker 1: and then I signed with loul Lemon, I was going through,
- 36:55Speaker 1: you know, a lot of changes and like having a
- 36:57Speaker 1: hard time with started like really struggling with injury, and
- 37:01Speaker 1: then didn't make a team at all. Like ever since
- 37:03Speaker 1: I signed with Lulam and I've never made the team,
- 37:05Speaker 1: which is personally really tough. But it's also I feel
- 37:08Speaker 1: like I've always felt like a little bad that, you know,
- 37:12Speaker 1: I've I want to be able to do that with
- 37:14Speaker 1: them supporting me, because they've been such a great supporter
- 37:17Speaker 1: of me. Yeah, and yet I can't figure out the
- 37:19Speaker 1: hell thing to be able to get me to the
- 37:21Speaker 1: level that I want to be in and I know
- 37:23Speaker 1: they would support me to be but truly, like they're
- 37:26Speaker 1: still there. You know, we just signed a new contract
- 37:28Speaker 1: through twenty twenty eight, and you know they know that
- 37:31Speaker 1: the like land of me going to the Olympics in
- 37:33Speaker 1: twenty twenty eight is pretty slim, but there's so much
- 37:35Speaker 1: that we can do outside of that, even like Whoop
- 37:38Speaker 1: has been with me for six years. We actually just
- 37:41Speaker 1: ended our relationship for relationship this summer. We're like, you know,
- 37:44Speaker 1: I think they felt kind of bad about rolling me off,
- 37:47Speaker 1: and I was like, guys, it's been six years, Like right,
- 37:50Speaker 1: that's not that's amazing, Like, thank you so much for
- 37:53Speaker 1: all your support, and that.
- 37:54Speaker 2: Is a really long time, especially like in today's economy,
- 37:57Speaker 2: and I hate to say like creator economy, but especially
- 38:01Speaker 2: when every day we are inundated with new people.
- 38:05Speaker 3: And new content.
- 38:06Speaker 2: To have the opportunity to build such a special relationship
- 38:09Speaker 2: with a sponsor, I think it speaks to the type
- 38:12Speaker 2: of woman that you are. It's bigger than the deliverables.
- 38:16Speaker 2: And with the right relationships, you will know that and
- 38:19Speaker 2: you will feel sure in that absolutely.
- 38:21Speaker 1: And yeah, I mean I have to like shout out
- 38:23Speaker 1: like I just signed with Zico last year. I signed
- 38:26Speaker 1: with Superfeet last year. Sonya Richard's Ross and me are
- 38:30Speaker 1: the Superfeet Ambassadors.
- 38:31Speaker 4: I'm finally getting Sonya on the pod. Oh good jobs.
- 38:36Speaker 3: It's so funny her and down I got like one.
- 38:39Speaker 4: I just had Don on rushing.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Yes.
- 38:42Speaker 4: I was like, can we get around the Boss Nelson?
- 38:47Speaker 2: It was it was excellent and it's just it's so
- 38:51Speaker 2: funny because the both of them came to me and
- 38:52Speaker 2: they were like, I have this one date at this
- 38:54Speaker 2: one time.
- 38:55Speaker 4: I was like, well, lucky for you, take it. I
- 38:57Speaker 4: will take it. Yeah, They're so excited, busy, busy ladies.
- 39:00Speaker 1: But I'm like, how am I an ambassador with Sonya
- 39:03Speaker 1: Richard's ross for like a brand like super Feet, Like
- 39:06Speaker 1: that's amazing, And so I keep trying to remind myself,
- 39:09Speaker 1: like I can't. I do have more to offer, and
- 39:11Speaker 1: I you know, I think it's probably hard for someone
- 39:15Speaker 1: who's a Midwesterner and a woman to like be like,
- 39:18Speaker 1: you know, I can. I can stand here and be
- 39:21Speaker 1: like I can do a good job for this brand,
- 39:23Speaker 1: even if I'm not on Team USA. I think it's
- 39:26Speaker 1: easier for men, for some reason, to like be like, yeah,
- 39:29Speaker 1: I deserve, and you know, maybe for someone who is
- 39:32Speaker 1: like a New Yorker have the attitude of like I deserve.
- 39:36Speaker 1: But I feel like coming from the Midwest, I always
- 39:38Speaker 1: deal with like I have to earn and like I
- 39:40Speaker 1: have to do better, and probably a woman thing too.
- 39:43Speaker 4: But I think it's in the way that you speak.
- 39:45Speaker 2: To yourself also, like you sound as though you're getting
- 39:48Speaker 2: to this place now where you're really owning so much
- 39:51Speaker 2: of the value that you have knowing and believing and
- 39:54Speaker 2: standing firm and that it goes so far beyond the
- 39:57Speaker 2: fact that you are an olymp Yeah.
- 40:00Speaker 1: Yeah, And I talk like that with the girls on
- 40:02Speaker 1: my team or even women this weekend that I've spoken
- 40:05Speaker 1: to who aren't on my team, and we get and
- 40:07Speaker 1: I find myself in these conversations all the time, talking
- 40:10Speaker 1: to athletes about their worth and like their brand and
- 40:13Speaker 1: empowering them that like, to be honest, like you don't
- 40:16Speaker 1: need that old white guy agent who's like barely answering
- 40:19Speaker 1: your emails and not getting you what like deals that
- 40:22Speaker 1: you deserve, Like you can do it without him.
- 40:24Speaker 4: You can do it on your own, you know.
- 40:26Speaker 1: I tell I'm always talking to my girls about like
- 40:29Speaker 1: owning their their power with you know, a brand. Might
- 40:33Speaker 1: you know, DM them and want to send them a
- 40:35Speaker 1: free pair of sunglasses and then ask them to post
- 40:37Speaker 1: about it. I'm like, girl, you do not need to
- 40:38Speaker 1: post about a free pair of sunglass.
- 40:40Speaker 4: It's like if you want to, that's fine.
- 40:42Speaker 1: If you want to put on your fas page and
- 40:43Speaker 1: like post the link and get some you know whatever,
- 40:46Speaker 1: but like a one hundred dollars pair of sunglasses does
- 40:49Speaker 1: not mean that you owe them a post on your
- 40:51Speaker 1: social media page. You know. Like we're always having these
- 40:53Speaker 1: kinds of conversations, and I think that helps me too,
- 40:57Speaker 1: Like I got to listen to my own advice and like,
- 41:00Speaker 1: you know, walk the walk as well. But it can
- 41:02Speaker 1: be fun to like have those kinds of conversations with
- 41:05Speaker 1: athletes and help them realize, like you know, they what
- 41:08Speaker 1: kind of power that they do have.
- 41:26Speaker 3: What have you learned being an advocate for yourself?
- 41:30Speaker 1: I mean it's a good question. I used to So
- 41:32Speaker 1: when I first went pro, I did have an agent
- 41:34Speaker 1: and didn't work out very well. I didn't feel like
- 41:38Speaker 1: he did a good job of seeing me outside. Like
- 41:41Speaker 1: basically he was like, okay, so I got you issue
- 41:43Speaker 1: contract with Nike, like I'm gonna take fifteen percent of
- 41:47Speaker 1: that and like book your flights.
- 41:48Speaker 4: And I was like okay, like you know what else
- 41:51Speaker 4: can we do?
- 41:51Speaker 1: And I felt like he was always of this mindset
- 41:53Speaker 1: of like, if you go at the Olympics, you'll get
- 41:55Speaker 1: like more deals. And then I went to the Olympics
- 41:57Speaker 1: and I was like, okay, where are my deals? And
- 41:59Speaker 1: he was like, if you get a medal, we can
- 42:01Speaker 1: get you deals. And I was like wait what, like
- 42:03Speaker 1: why are you moving the carrot? And like I modeled
- 42:06Speaker 1: for four years in high school and I'd like, I'm
- 42:09Speaker 1: like pretty good on camera. So I was just like
- 42:11Speaker 1: I should I'm marketable, like we should be I should
- 42:14Speaker 1: be getting deals, Like why are we not hustling, you know?
- 42:18Speaker 1: And so yeah, we parted ways and I just started
- 42:21Speaker 1: doing it for myself and like signed Hype Race, which
- 42:24Speaker 1: lasted for like three years. I signed Vital Proteins, which
- 42:27Speaker 1: lasted for like three or four years, and we just
- 42:30Speaker 1: started doing you know, my fans. Kevin and I start
- 42:33Speaker 1: doing our own thing. And it wasn't like any one
- 42:36Speaker 1: moment where I was like, oh okay, like I can
- 42:37Speaker 1: do this now. It was like just practicing, like practicing
- 42:40Speaker 1: sending emails, you know, and having Kevin there to like
- 42:43Speaker 1: proofread my email and like maybe help me beef it
- 42:46Speaker 1: up a little bit if I was like being too
- 42:48Speaker 1: gentle or something. And also like I don't know, realizing
- 42:51Speaker 1: that maybe they'll just say no. Like I've been in
- 42:55Speaker 1: so many like conversations with different brands where they make
- 42:58Speaker 1: an offer, I tell them my rates are because now
- 43:01Speaker 1: I have like rates, so I can be like, yeah,
- 43:02Speaker 1: these are my rates, and if they come back and
- 43:04Speaker 1: they'll be like, okay, so we want to do like
- 43:07Speaker 1: one post, but we want to do it at your
- 43:08Speaker 1: like six month rate. And I just come back and
- 43:11Speaker 1: I say, so, I'm so sorry that you know it
- 43:14Speaker 1: doesn't align with like where your budget is right now.
- 43:17Speaker 1: And I might be able to offer them something like
- 43:19Speaker 1: this is what your budget is, like this is what
- 43:20Speaker 1: I can do for that amount, but if this is
- 43:23Speaker 1: what you really need, this is what that costs, and
- 43:27Speaker 1: no hard feelings. There's like never any hard feelings if
- 43:29Speaker 1: that doesn't work out with what your needs are. I
- 43:31Speaker 1: also have a bunch of friends that I can recommend
- 43:33Speaker 1: that are probably more in that price range. I'm happy
- 43:36Speaker 1: to pass on information for some other athletes that I
- 43:39Speaker 1: think would be great to work with that might be
- 43:41Speaker 1: in your price range. And sometimes that's the case, it's
- 43:44Speaker 1: like doesn't work out. But oftentimes they come back and
- 43:47Speaker 1: they're like okay, yeah, Like I'm like, okay, why did
- 43:51Speaker 1: you Yeah, why did you try and low molve me
- 43:53Speaker 1: the first time? But it's like you just have to
- 43:55Speaker 1: do a couple of those like I feel like conversations
- 43:58Speaker 1: before you're like, oh, like this is isn't that scary?
- 44:00Speaker 4: This isn't that bad.
- 44:01Speaker 1: And the worst that they could say is like walk away,
- 44:03Speaker 1: and there's more deals to be had, So yeah, it
- 44:05Speaker 1: doesn't not every single deal has to work out, you know.
- 44:08Speaker 2: When I'm hearing just knowing that it's okay to own
- 44:13Speaker 2: your no and that the right things will stick, the
- 44:17Speaker 2: right things will be there, and that ninety nine point
- 44:20Speaker 2: nine percent of the time when you hear a know,
- 44:23Speaker 2: you just are exactly where you started, and exactly where
- 44:26Speaker 2: you started probably isn't that bad.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Absolutely, And I always believe that, Like, even with the
- 44:31Speaker 1: Whoop thing, I was like, you, guys, I've had such
- 44:33Speaker 1: a great relationship working with you. I've every single person
- 44:36Speaker 1: I've interacted with on your team has been lovely. I
- 44:38Speaker 1: feel like you've done a great job of supporting me. No.
- 44:41Speaker 4: Yeah, they set me flowers, which was so nice.
- 44:44Speaker 1: I was like, what brand like, it's like, we don't
- 44:46Speaker 1: want to work with you anymore, floy how a nice?
- 44:50Speaker 1: So nice? And I was like, this is going to
- 44:52Speaker 1: open me up for something else that I couldn't have
- 44:55Speaker 1: done with Whoop, because like Whoop is doing like blood
- 44:57Speaker 1: work stuff. Now they are expanding so much it you know,
- 45:01Speaker 1: it kind of limits different partnerships I could do in
- 45:03Speaker 1: these different categories, even like with watches, you know, any
- 45:06Speaker 1: thing on my wrist. And so I'm like, this was
- 45:09Speaker 1: an amazing opportunity and now, yeah, you know, hopefully that
- 45:12Speaker 1: like opens a door to the next thing for the
- 45:15Speaker 1: next six years that I don't know what it is yet.
- 45:17Speaker 1: But you have to have some kind of like trust
- 45:21Speaker 1: that like that's the world is just gonna like look
- 45:23Speaker 1: out for you as long as you're doing a good job.
- 45:25Speaker 1: I think that's part of it, is like you have
- 45:27Speaker 1: to feel really confident that what you're doing, the service
- 45:31Speaker 1: that you're providing, the way that you're showing up you
- 45:33Speaker 1: can be really proud of and that you have no
- 45:36Speaker 1: like if I felt like I wasn't doing a good
- 45:39Speaker 1: job in all those areas, I probably be really nervous
- 45:42Speaker 1: about figuring out how to replace that income because I
- 45:45Speaker 1: don't really know how I'm going to market myself. But
- 45:47Speaker 1: I'm like, no, I feel like I do a great
- 45:49Speaker 1: job as an ambassador for all my partners, and I
- 45:51Speaker 1: always genuinely believe in everything that I'm doing. And so yeah,
- 45:55Speaker 1: I'm like, the next thing will will come around, and
- 45:57Speaker 1: you have to like be confident in that all you can.
- 46:00Speaker 3: Do is the best you can with what you have
- 46:01Speaker 3: and know what your intentions are.
- 46:03Speaker 2: And when you stand firm and your intention then you
- 46:06Speaker 2: can accept whatever will happen next. And so that sounds
- 46:10Speaker 2: to be exactly where it is that you are in
- 46:13Speaker 2: what's happening. I also really appreciated the dialogue that you
- 46:17Speaker 2: mentioned that you're having with your teammates.
- 46:19Speaker 3: Right, because that in itself is so powerful.
- 46:22Speaker 2: I bet there are so many people that want to
- 46:24Speaker 2: be a part of a dialogue like that that maybe
- 46:28Speaker 2: haven't worked with a manager as an athlete or don't have.
- 46:31Speaker 3: The experiences that you have.
- 46:32Speaker 2: You have such a foundational knowledge base that you can
- 46:35Speaker 2: bring to the table that can be helpful to so
- 46:38Speaker 2: many people.
- 46:39Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 46:40Speaker 1: I actually I've been sitting on this idea for a
- 46:42Speaker 1: podcast for so long. I've even talked to you about
- 46:44Speaker 1: it before, about this topic, like I want to be
- 46:47Speaker 1: able to talk about the business of women's sports, like
- 46:49Speaker 1: the numbers, business marketing side of women's sports. I think
- 46:52Speaker 1: there's a lot of like podcasts that talk about more
- 46:56Speaker 1: about the men's side of that, and yeah, for some reason,
- 46:58Speaker 1: there's still not an off of this conversation about the
- 47:01Speaker 1: business of women's sports, like women's sports not being something
- 47:05Speaker 1: that's a charity that you know is seen as like, oh,
- 47:08Speaker 1: it's this like cute little thing, but like it's yeah,
- 47:11Speaker 1: it is a business and people are spending money on
- 47:13Speaker 1: it and fans are spending money on it, and just
- 47:16Speaker 1: being able to yeah, have that be more of a
- 47:19Speaker 1: conversation and more empowering for anyone from athletes to agents
- 47:23Speaker 1: to all the support people who are involved in women's
- 47:27Speaker 1: sports in any.
- 47:27Speaker 2: Way aside from the house renovation. What else are you
- 47:31Speaker 2: excited about right now?
- 47:32Speaker 1: Gosh, mostly just like everything having to do with the team.
- 47:36Speaker 1: I'm going to go to Copenhagen for Worlds in September.
- 47:39Speaker 4: You told me that you've never been.
- 47:40Speaker 3: I have racks for you.
- 47:41Speaker 4: I'm so bummed.
- 47:42Speaker 1: I've heard it's an amazing city and yeah, fifty percent
- 47:45Speaker 1: of our team is competing there, so I was like,
- 47:47Speaker 1: I gotta, I gotta make my way. I'm going to
- 47:50Speaker 1: London September fourth and fifth for the Like the Wind
- 47:52Speaker 1: Magazine Live event. They're hosting their first everts A Like
- 47:56Speaker 1: the Wind Magazine is a British based cord print magazine
- 48:01Speaker 1: about the culture side of running. It's you know, it's
- 48:04Speaker 1: a running magazine, but it's more about, like less about
- 48:06Speaker 1: results and more about like cultural topics around running. And
- 48:09Speaker 1: I've been involved with them for a while and they're yeah,
- 48:11Speaker 1: they're doing a live event in London, so she'll be
- 48:13Speaker 1: so fun. So they asked me to fly out there
- 48:15Speaker 1: for that, and I was like, boom, that's my ticket
- 48:17Speaker 1: to Europe. I'm gonna mess around in Europe for a
- 48:19Speaker 1: couple of weeks and then I'm gonna go to Copenhagen
- 48:22Speaker 1: for Worlds. I me and see and you'll be in
- 48:24Speaker 1: the half marathon at her first World Championships ever, and
- 48:28Speaker 1: Grace you will be in the in the road mile
- 48:29Speaker 1: and her first World Championships and Tmusa ever.
- 48:33Speaker 4: So that would be really fun.
- 48:34Speaker 1: And then we have Courtney Coppingers, our trail athlete, and
- 48:37Speaker 1: she's bopping around in Switzerland and at UTMB and all
- 48:41Speaker 1: the trail scene all summer too, so I might be
- 48:43Speaker 1: able to link up with her while I'm out there
- 48:46Speaker 1: as well.
- 48:46Speaker 3: Have you been to Shamani before?
- 48:48Speaker 4: I have not, And Courtney was trying to get me
- 48:50Speaker 4: to go to UTMB, and I was like, Oh, that's
- 48:51Speaker 4: like gonna be over a month away from home. That's
- 48:54Speaker 4: a long time.
- 48:55Speaker 1: But twenty twenty seven UTMB is on my I'm like, Tar,
- 49:00Speaker 1: I got to be out there next year. I've heard
- 49:01Speaker 1: just so many incredible things about Yeah, that event, it's
- 49:05Speaker 1: it's absolutely stunning. I've been twice now. For those that
- 49:09Speaker 1: don't know about UTMB, the event in SHAWMNI is kind
- 49:12Speaker 1: of the finale. You can think of it as the
- 49:14Speaker 1: World Series of Trail Racing exactly, and so it has
- 49:18Speaker 1: really grown in popularity over the last handful of years,
- 49:21Speaker 1: not necessarily in that it wasn't popular among athletes, but
- 49:25Speaker 1: it has grown in popularity with its distribution of content,
- 49:30Speaker 1: people understanding what it is, more eyes on it, more
- 49:33Speaker 1: brand involvement, and so it's really become a really fun
- 49:36Speaker 1: hub within the running world in the summer. Yeah, I
- 49:39Speaker 1: mean trail running in general, you could say that about
- 49:42Speaker 1: trail running as a whole has just like they were
- 49:44Speaker 1: always the trail runner source there doing their thing and
- 49:47Speaker 1: enjoying it, and they knew how amazing it was. And
- 49:50Speaker 1: in the past couple of years, yeah, more a broader
- 49:53Speaker 1: you know, swath of people are understanding the magic of
- 49:56Speaker 1: like being out on the trails. Myself included Kevin and
- 49:58Speaker 1: I just did our first race Broken Arrow.
- 50:03Speaker 4: Did you see his real.
- 50:06Speaker 2: Colleen's husband? But yeah, okay Colleens. I'm just obsessed with
- 50:14Speaker 2: Kevin colleens fiance.
- 50:17Speaker 4: Like he's not.
- 50:19Speaker 2: Necessarily a runner and certainly not a content creator, and
- 50:24Speaker 2: the way that he got into creating content around this
- 50:28Speaker 2: event was really endearing.
- 50:29Speaker 1: It was the whole thing was actually really cool. I
- 50:32Speaker 1: kind of, you know, I was gonna go out to
- 50:34Speaker 1: support Courtney. She was doing the Ascent Race on Friday,
- 50:36Speaker 1: which is a three point six mile straight uphill. It's
- 50:39Speaker 1: like three thousand feet of vert. You're just going straight
- 50:42Speaker 1: up a mountain.
- 50:43Speaker 4: It was brutal.
- 50:44Speaker 1: So that was on Friday, and then Saturday was her
- 50:46Speaker 1: off day, which was the eleven K, which is what
- 50:48Speaker 1: we did, and then she did the twenty three k
- 50:51Speaker 1: like classic up and down race. I think that was
- 50:54Speaker 1: I don't know, another three thousand feet of her or
- 50:56Speaker 1: something over twenty three k on Sunday, So we were
- 51:00Speaker 1: I was just there to really I just went to
- 51:01Speaker 1: support Corney.
- 51:02Speaker 4: I was not going to race. I had no intentions
- 51:04Speaker 4: of racing. I didn't even know.
- 51:07Speaker 1: I thought you, I didn't know that you could sign
- 51:09Speaker 1: up like last minute like that. But then one of
- 51:11Speaker 1: the other people that we were staying with we had
- 51:13Speaker 1: this big airbnb with like all Courtney's friends, and someone
- 51:16Speaker 1: else signed up for the Ascent race.
- 51:17Speaker 4: On the day of Oh dear, yeah, morning up. And
- 51:20Speaker 4: I was like, oh, you can do that.
- 51:21Speaker 3: What a masochist, I know, and that.
- 51:23Speaker 1: Didn't have a good time. And then I found out
- 51:26Speaker 1: that there was an eleven K and I was like,
- 51:28Speaker 1: eleven K. I'm on my comeback journey from running. I've
- 51:30Speaker 1: run like five and a half miles with you know,
- 51:33Speaker 1: with my teammates. Eleven K was like six point I
- 51:36Speaker 1: think it was like six point two or something. I
- 51:37Speaker 1: was like, I could do that. I could stretch to
- 51:39Speaker 1: six point two. But it was like, you know, also
- 51:41Speaker 1: up a mountain, like I think I could do I've
- 51:43Speaker 1: been doing a little trail running with Courtney and just
- 51:45Speaker 1: like she's taking me on like greens, you know, like
- 51:47Speaker 1: chill trail runs.
- 51:49Speaker 4: Was like, I think I could do that.
- 51:49Speaker 2: I'm sorry, just as a novice in the trail running
- 51:52Speaker 2: is green like blue like diamond skiing Oh, I didn't know.
- 51:57Speaker 1: I don't know if this is like a broad thing,
- 51:59Speaker 1: it's how Courtney talks about it. I could just be
- 52:02Speaker 1: like a Corney Coppinger thing.
- 52:04Speaker 4: There are trail runners listening to this podcast. You're like, Emily,
- 52:06Speaker 4: you already embarrassment that you believe you know, that's what
- 52:08Speaker 4: I'm saying. I was like, I don't know, people know
- 52:11Speaker 4: what I mean.
- 52:12Speaker 3: Right, wait till the indro and I'm like, so we
- 52:14Speaker 3: talk about greens and they don't exist.
- 52:15Speaker 1: Yeah, that's how Courtney talks about like greens and blues
- 52:19Speaker 1: and clacks and stuff, and so she's been like easing
- 52:22Speaker 1: me into it anyway. So I was like, oh, I
- 52:24Speaker 1: think I could do that. And so then I the
- 52:26Speaker 1: night before I looked at Kevin. I was like, do
- 52:27Speaker 1: you want to do a trail race part? Do you
- 52:29Speaker 1: want to do the eleven k? And he just like
- 52:31Speaker 1: thought for like two point five seconds, and then he
- 52:33Speaker 1: was just like sure. And then I was like, oh no,
- 52:36Speaker 1: I mean he just you're at altitude. Yeah, runs for
- 52:39Speaker 1: his mental health and he runs to clear his mind.
- 52:42Speaker 1: So I was a little bit like, Oh, he's gonna
- 52:44Speaker 1: hate me after this. Yeah, I've dragged him to like
- 52:47Speaker 1: some ten k's before and stuff on the road, and
- 52:50Speaker 1: he doesn't typically historically have a lot of fun with it,
- 52:53Speaker 1: so I was like, oh, no, he's gonna hate me.
- 52:55Speaker 4: And then he loved it. Oh love that for Kevin.
- 52:59Speaker 4: We we had a blast.
- 53:00Speaker 1: And so yeah, he took videos that were meant to
- 53:02Speaker 1: just be like for our friend group, Like he was
- 53:04Speaker 1: just you know, saying like, oh, look at the what
- 53:06Speaker 1: Colleen's roped me into. I'm doing good, you know, I
- 53:09Speaker 1: loving K trail race on a Saturday, like, you know,
- 53:12Speaker 1: be grateful you all have kids, because when you don't
- 53:15Speaker 1: have kids, you have to do stuff like this. And
- 53:17Speaker 1: then he showed me the videos and I was like, wait,
- 53:19Speaker 1: this would be a really funny reel. Can I like
- 53:22Speaker 1: edit this into a reel for you? And he was
- 53:23Speaker 1: like sure, And then we had to all the whole
- 53:25Speaker 1: house had to bully him into actually posting it on
- 53:28Speaker 1: his Instagram.
- 53:28Speaker 2: So proud, yeah, so proud of you both were doing
- 53:30Speaker 2: the race. It was so fun for sharing the content.
- 53:33Speaker 4: It was so fun. We're like, wait, a retrail running
- 53:35Speaker 4: people now.
- 53:36Speaker 2: I think it's just indicative and also really cool to
- 53:40Speaker 2: see what's coming down the pipe for you. You're really
- 53:43Speaker 2: on this journey now of following the joy of doing
- 53:45Speaker 2: the things that make you feel happy, that make you
- 53:48Speaker 2: feel good in your body. So going down that avenue
- 53:52Speaker 2: when you think right now about who it is that
- 53:55Speaker 2: you're becoming, when you look in the mirror, what is
- 53:57Speaker 2: it that you're seeing looking back at you.
- 54:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean this is probably a weird tie into seaweez,
- 54:04Speaker 1: But I want to be able to like really my
- 54:07Speaker 1: goals for running and like myself and you know, fitness
- 54:11Speaker 1: or like my athletic goals right now really just have
- 54:13Speaker 1: to do with being able to say yes to things
- 54:16Speaker 1: I've had to say no so much for so many years,
- 54:19Speaker 1: Like even like no to friends' weddings and no to
- 54:23Speaker 1: vacations and no to fun runs with like at community events,
- 54:27Speaker 1: because it's like I have to prioritize I have this workout,
- 54:30Speaker 1: I have this training schedule.
- 54:31Speaker 4: I have to like protect myself.
- 54:32Speaker 1: I have to you know, protect my energy and protect
- 54:35Speaker 1: my legs and like, you know, all these things that
- 54:38Speaker 1: I have to kind of avoid in order to do
- 54:41Speaker 1: something really special and like really big. And there's that's
- 54:43Speaker 1: an amazing way to actually live. And I think there's
- 54:46Speaker 1: nothing wrong with that but I think I got to
- 54:48Speaker 1: the point where I'm like, oh, I'm excited to be
- 54:50Speaker 1: able to say yes to those things that I've you know,
- 54:53Speaker 1: been kind of missing out on. So like, my best
- 54:56Speaker 1: friend from Portland's going to Mexico with her family that
- 54:59Speaker 1: go every year. She's got three kids now, and they
- 55:01Speaker 1: usually say it's in April, and I usually say no
- 55:04Speaker 1: because I'm training. And this year I was in a
- 55:06Speaker 1: boot and I was like, oh, I get to go
- 55:08Speaker 1: to Mexico with Brooke and Pete and the all their kids.
- 55:10Speaker 1: Like there's three kids that are our god children. And
- 55:13Speaker 1: just being able to like say yes to something like
- 55:15Speaker 1: that is really meaningful. And then say yes to something
- 55:18Speaker 1: like you know, lou Lemon's like, Hey, we're bringing back
- 55:21Speaker 1: Seaweeds and it's a half marathon in Vancouver that's going
- 55:23Speaker 1: to be a party with a DJ and music and
- 55:26Speaker 1: it's like a festival, running event all weekend. And I'm like, yeah,
- 55:29Speaker 1: that sounds so fun. I am so down And they're
- 55:32Speaker 1: like can you paste the eight minute group? And I'm
- 55:34Speaker 1: like hell, yeah, Like I don't you know.
- 55:37Speaker 4: I don't know, maybe I'll run it with you.
- 55:38Speaker 3: You should Yeah, No, I think I four contacts.
- 55:42Speaker 2: I am already running seaweeds just like I was like,
- 55:45Speaker 2: let me, you're no, I am, I'm going and I
- 55:52Speaker 2: actually i'm I have my final twenty to do in
- 55:56Speaker 2: total that day.
- 55:57Speaker 4: Oh amazing. So I war them up and cool down.
- 56:00Speaker 2: With warm up, cool down, I mean some some party miles,
- 56:04Speaker 2: some party miles after the fact.
- 56:05Speaker 4: But what are you training for? Marathon? So it's at
- 56:09Speaker 4: the end of August.
- 56:10Speaker 2: Wow, yeah, so I have twenty two this week and
- 56:14Speaker 2: then next week is seaweeds. But maybe being in the
- 56:17Speaker 2: eight minute group sounds like a nice thing for me. Perfect,
- 56:19Speaker 2: Oh dear, that's just stuff like that.
- 56:21Speaker 1: That's like I want to be able to do that
- 56:23Speaker 1: without worrying, like and just the normal. Honestly, Like, it's
- 56:27Speaker 1: been so long since I've been to a point where
- 56:30Speaker 1: someone like a friend can be like, hey, do you
- 56:32Speaker 1: want to like go run tomorrow, like I have eight
- 56:34Speaker 1: miles or I'm running run for an hour?
- 56:36Speaker 4: Do you want to come? And for so long I've
- 56:39Speaker 4: been like, I don't know if my foot is going
- 56:41Speaker 4: to be cry for that.
- 56:43Speaker 2: You know.
- 56:43Speaker 1: I want to say yes, and I want to catch
- 56:44Speaker 1: up with you and go for a run and get
- 56:45Speaker 1: coffee after. But there's that anxiety about like and can
- 56:49Speaker 1: I do that? And I'm like getting back to a
- 56:51Speaker 1: point where I can walk the dogs without pain, you know,
- 56:54Speaker 1: go for a run with my friends, say yes to
- 56:57Speaker 1: a half marathon in Vancouver that sounds like a party,
- 57:00Speaker 1: Like I just want to, you know, get back to
- 57:02Speaker 1: that place, and and then say yes to like doing
- 57:05Speaker 1: doubles with Alyssa and going to high rocks, you know,
- 57:08Speaker 1: races and competing with other people from the running community
- 57:12Speaker 1: who are dabbling in this new sport. You know, like
- 57:15Speaker 1: say saying yes to a lot of new fun adventures
- 57:18Speaker 1: that just sound like that sounds fun.
- 57:21Speaker 4: Why don't I do that?
- 57:22Speaker 1: And then see where that takes me In terms of
- 57:24Speaker 1: I've always felt like the way I've been able to
- 57:27Speaker 1: connect the best with people in my community or when
- 57:30Speaker 1: I'm doing stuff that you know, feels like that then
- 57:34Speaker 1: I end up having fun, but also like meeting people
- 57:37Speaker 1: that I love those moments of you know, making connection
- 57:40Speaker 1: with someone who comes and says high and like tells
- 57:42Speaker 1: me about their injury journey, and like, you know, if
- 57:46Speaker 1: we can connect on something meaningful like that, that's always
- 57:49Speaker 1: it's just like kind of the best feeling, do you.
- 57:52Speaker 3: Feel now like you're in a place where you're okay
- 57:56Speaker 3: being that person. And what I mean by that is
- 57:58Speaker 3: that I've been injured too, yes.
- 58:00Speaker 2: Because that is how people come up to you very often,
- 58:05Speaker 2: more often than not.
- 58:06Speaker 3: It's so funny.
- 58:07Speaker 2: I was chatting with coach Bennett the other day and
- 58:09Speaker 2: he's like, you know what people tell me nine times
- 58:11Speaker 2: out of ten when they meet me. And I'm like what.
- 58:13Speaker 2: He's like that I suck itt running. That's what they
- 58:15Speaker 2: say to him. They come up to him and they're like,
- 58:16Speaker 2: I suck it running. It's so good to meet you.
- 58:18Speaker 2: And so I feel like people come up to you
- 58:19Speaker 2: and they're like, oh my god.
- 58:20Speaker 4: Colleen quickly. I've also been in it.
- 58:22Speaker 1: Literally, yeah, how do you know that? That is exactly
- 58:25Speaker 1: what they said. I mean, it happened to me multiple
- 58:26Speaker 1: times yesterday. But it is really meaningful because I've had
- 58:30Speaker 1: people come up and say that to me and start crying,
- 58:32Speaker 1: you know, like they're like, they feel like this connection
- 58:35Speaker 1: to me because of something hard that we've both been
- 58:38Speaker 1: through that they feel like not everyone understands, you know.
- 58:41Speaker 1: They're like they can come tell me that and then
- 58:44Speaker 1: feel like and the way that I look at them
- 58:46Speaker 1: and their eye am like I see you, like I
- 58:47Speaker 1: get it, and they they'll get emotional because I think
- 58:50Speaker 1: they feel like, yeah, they feel lonely, you know, they
- 58:53Speaker 1: feel like not everyone understands that if they've been through
- 58:55Speaker 1: something like that, and they feel like it isolates them
- 58:58Speaker 1: from a lot of their community. And so as hard
- 59:01Speaker 1: as that is to be, like, it's emotionally kind of
- 59:04Speaker 1: draining because I feel like I have to, like you know,
- 59:06Speaker 1: I like kind of give myself of them.
- 59:09Speaker 4: But it does it also helps me.
- 59:11Speaker 1: It also helps me feel like less disconnected myself, and
- 59:14Speaker 1: it helps give me purpose in some of the like
- 59:18Speaker 1: what the hell am I doing out here moments, I'm like, okay,
- 59:20Speaker 1: that like it helps me like remind me that it
- 59:23Speaker 1: is helpful. It is meaningful, like there is like value
- 59:26Speaker 1: and sharing those things and the value and like you know,
- 59:30Speaker 1: continuing on even when I like just want to, yeah,
- 59:33Speaker 1: stop doing all of it, stop doing the things that
- 59:35Speaker 1: talking about it like disappear, I'm like, wait, no, I
- 59:38Speaker 1: have to like, yeah.
- 59:40Speaker 2: Keep going, keep going. There's power in the perspective and
- 59:42Speaker 2: if anybody knows that, that's you. And to be able
- 59:46Speaker 2: to connect in that way with so many people who
- 59:48Speaker 2: see you as such a again, really of strength is
- 59:53Speaker 2: a really it's a really special opportunity.
- 59:55Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 59:56Speaker 1: Ye, well, they're going to see me as a more
- 59:57Speaker 1: beacon of strength that I'm out there doing high rocks
- 59:59Speaker 1: and I start getting.
- 1:00:00Speaker 2: Paris twenty twenty seven, everyone, Paris twenty twenty seven and strength.
- 1:00:07Speaker 2: Before I let you go today, right now, you have
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: an opportunity to give yourself a piece of advice. Let's
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: reflect back on when you finally got the imaging of
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: your foot that told you that you could have some
- 1:00:21Speaker 2: clarity on what's really going on here after so long
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: knowing what you know?
- 1:00:25Speaker 3: Now, what advice would you give yourself during that hurdle moment?
- 1:00:28Speaker 4: Yeah, I have wondered, like why did I need that image?
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: Like I knew something was wrong with my foot, you know,
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: like I shouldn't have needed to wait for the image
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: to tell me what I already knew and be able
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: to like act accordingly. And I wonder how much time
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: and you know, kind of angst and just distress I
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: might have been able to save myself if I was
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: able to own my own like inner, knowing a little
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: bit more and not needing that external validation to you
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: know kind of if I want, If that's what I
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: needed to be able to move on, could I have
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: allowed myself to move on, like I don't know, a
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: couple of years ago.
- 1:01:12Speaker 4: Everything happens for a reason.
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: If I moved on a couple years ago, I wouldn't
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: have started ridia that, you know, Like, I don't have
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: necessarily any regrets about it, but I do think it's
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: a good lesson. I think that a lot of us do,
- 1:01:23Speaker 1: myself included is that we doubt that undernoing and we
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: like need someone else to tell us or to like
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: validate it. And yeah, if you believe it to be
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: true and you feel like you know something, like own
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: it and act accordingly.
- 1:01:36Speaker 3: Trust your gut. Yeah, yeah, Collin Quickly. Always such a
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: joy to have you.
- 1:01:41Speaker 4: That's so good to be studio and you're in your
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: personal studio too. The last time we spoke was not here.
- 1:01:47Speaker 2: So in the studio well, and for those that aren't
- 1:01:50Speaker 2: following along with you just yet gives the deeds?
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: How do they find you?
- 1:01:53Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:01:53Speaker 1: Well, personally, I'm Steeple Squigs on Instagram. I don't think
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: I'll ever change my Instagram handle to high rocks or
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: anything like that. Steeple Squigs on Instagram. I also have
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: my own personal YouTube channel. I posted a thirty one
- 1:02:08Speaker 1: minute video about going to broke an arrow I just had.
- 1:02:11Speaker 1: I did a GoPro all weekend and I just couldn't
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: I cut stuff and I couldn't cut it down to
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: any less than thirty one minutes because it was just
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: there was was such a fun weekend. So I was like,
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: it's a marathon video. You can skip to sections. I
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: can't wait to watch arts that you want. But I
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: do have a YouTube channel as well. And then the
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: team is Meridia, so m e er Idia. It comes
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: from the word meridian, which is a definition of a
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: high point, a peak, an apex, the top of something.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: Meridia.
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: We cut off the end to make it sound more feminine.
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: Meridia sounds like it could be a feminine word and
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: a love language. It also sounds like it could be
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: the plural form of meridian. If you have many high
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: points or peaks in your athletic career, you might have meridia.
- 1:02:53Speaker 1: And so it's a made up word, but that's where
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: it comes from. And we are at Meridia at Ta
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: Meridia on Instagram and YouTube. We also have a low
