- 0:04Speaker 1: NHL Unscripted is a production of the NHL and iHeart
- 0:07Speaker 1: podcasts coming out but NHL Unscripted, are you not entertained?
- 0:24Speaker 1: Lots going on right now in the world of hockey.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Flowers of Jacob Dobish, a hardware report as you have
- 0:29Speaker 1: the finalist name for the Calder Trophy. Our special guests
- 0:33Speaker 1: this week. That's right, the carl Brothers, Matt Curl, a
- 0:35Speaker 1: terrific NHL player for so many years, and David Curl,
- 0:38Speaker 1: the head coach of Denver. That's right atop the college
- 0:41Speaker 1: hockey world. We begin with the draft last night. Nate
- 0:44Speaker 1: Thompson just getting worked right now, the late night NHL
- 0:47Speaker 1: Tonight shift. So in the midst of having to break
- 0:49Speaker 1: down what happened the avalanche in the wild, Nate along
- 0:52Speaker 1: with me and JD and telling everybody else going what
- 0:54Speaker 1: the leaves get the number one pick? The fix is in, Nate,
- 0:57Speaker 1: The fix is in unbelievable shades of Austin Matthews number
- 1:01Speaker 1: one pick, Wendell Clark a number one peck back in
- 1:03Speaker 1: the day. The rest of the top five, we'll get
- 1:04Speaker 1: to San Jose. JD's guys moving up seven spots in
- 1:07Speaker 1: the lottery, Vancouver are the best odds to win. I
- 1:09Speaker 1: want him mckennatha. Vancouver doesn't happen. Canucks are going third
- 1:12Speaker 1: in Chicago and the Rangers again tumultuous week. Nate here
- 1:16Speaker 1: for the leaves. After the press conference, Steve Simmons gonna
- 1:19Speaker 1: after Jaka, Pelly, et cetera, just your thoughts on the
- 1:22Speaker 1: draft because a lot of people seem pretty pissed off.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a joke. Lease, it's crazy. I mean the
- 1:28Speaker 2: pressure's on though from John Jaika. I mean, now, now,
- 1:32Speaker 2: what are you gonna do. You're gonna take the first pick?
- 1:34Speaker 2: You canna take the second you're traded.
- 1:36Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I mean, he well, let's see what he's made of
- 1:39Speaker 2: now with you know, having the first overall pick. But
- 1:41Speaker 2: I mean, this is it's insanity to me that the
- 1:44Speaker 2: least got this. I mean, it's not rig though. We
- 1:47Speaker 2: know that it's just random.
- 1:49Speaker 1: Because Toronto's pick JD was in the top five. Twenty
- 1:52Speaker 1: twenty seven and twenty twenty picks go to Boston and
- 1:54Speaker 1: Philly thanks to Brandon Carl and Scott Lawton.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Trades.
- 1:57Speaker 1: Love that now mckinna is the top ranked North American skater.
- 2:01Speaker 1: You got Chase Reed in the mix as well. But
- 2:02Speaker 1: I know, Jedd, you've talked about Steenbroock top of the
- 2:05Speaker 1: list of international skaters. The Swedish phenom our friend Lawrence
- 2:08Speaker 1: Goldsien is a phenomenal Joon Michel Neborg. He said to
- 2:10Speaker 1: me Stembrick might be the most player ready guy tomorrow.
- 2:13Speaker 1: So what do you make of the results and is
- 2:14Speaker 1: it a fedcon bleu that McKenna goes number one.
- 2:18Speaker 3: Well, they need a winger for Matthews, so that kind
- 2:21Speaker 3: of solves that problem. But man, when you go to
- 2:25Speaker 3: the casinos, sometimes you win big. Listen. They lose their
- 2:28Speaker 3: two picks in the first round the next two years,
- 2:32Speaker 3: so the clock is ticking. It's a very difficult situation.
- 2:35Speaker 3: But I mean to fucking you know Tree Living. I
- 2:38Speaker 3: heard he's a great guy, but not just destroy this
- 2:42Speaker 3: franchise fairly quickly, pretty damn quick. He blew this thing
- 2:46Speaker 3: up and just rode off into the sunset. So good
- 2:49Speaker 3: for him. He'll be on a beach somewhere. But yeah,
- 2:52Speaker 3: I listen, it's gonna be it's gonna be difficult because
- 2:56Speaker 3: anything he does right now, you know, there's no rose
- 2:58Speaker 3: colored glasses on Chica or Sunday, Like, I think he's
- 3:03Speaker 3: gonna really not be in the public eye. I think
- 3:05Speaker 3: it's gonna be more Sundean, and that's gonna be the
- 3:07Speaker 3: more forward facing guy. I think he's going to kind
- 3:10Speaker 3: of hide in the background and be more of the
- 3:12Speaker 3: you know, the pulling the strings and making the moves.
- 3:16Speaker 3: But Sunday's gonna kind of be the face, and you know,
- 3:20Speaker 3: hopefully he's able to kind of figure out if McKenna
- 3:23Speaker 3: is the guy. I do think you have to go McKenna.
- 3:26Speaker 3: You know, I love Stenberg too. I think Stenberg's kind
- 3:29Speaker 3: of the To me, he is the most ready person
- 3:33Speaker 3: out there. But they need a winger for Matthews. This
- 3:37Speaker 3: could be the guy. And also this could be you know,
- 3:40Speaker 3: Matthews could turn around and be like I want out
- 3:42Speaker 3: of here, you know, because I've had enough and I
- 3:44Speaker 3: don't know where the franchise is going. But you know,
- 3:47Speaker 3: he's in a good position where he's going to go
- 3:49Speaker 3: to them and be like, prove to me that I
- 3:51Speaker 3: should stay here, Like, prove to me what is your plan?
- 3:55Speaker 3: And they're gonna have to deal with that plan. But
- 3:57Speaker 3: I do think you got to go McKenna. A dynamic
- 4:00Speaker 3: winger like that for Amats could really help him. He's
- 4:03Speaker 3: never had a a lefty on his on his on
- 4:08Speaker 3: his wing, that's that skilled and offensively adept. It's always
- 4:13Speaker 3: been usually righty, So I think, yeah, to the point.
- 4:15Speaker 1: But Matthews and the clock ticket though, j D. That's
- 4:17Speaker 1: what a lot of people were saying in Toronto. Matthews
- 4:19Speaker 1: apparently said, like, I want to see significant changes made
- 4:22Speaker 1: to this roster in the next few months. So I
- 4:23Speaker 1: wouldn't say he's holding the team of hostage. What other
- 4:25Speaker 1: player wouldn't want his team to be significantly upgraded. But
- 4:28Speaker 1: now there's starts to get more scuttle about that. Maybe
- 4:30Speaker 1: Matthews wants out and a couple months maybe him and
- 4:32Speaker 1: Bruce Cassidy going to LA.
- 4:33Speaker 3: What do you think of that?
- 4:36Speaker 2: That's number one for me, Jesse Is Matthews.
- 4:39Speaker 3: Yeah, we had it Matthews La.
- 4:41Speaker 2: No, I mean just in general, like they have to
- 4:45Speaker 2: like Chaka and Sundin to me like that's their first
- 4:48Speaker 2: phone call, Like all right, we got the first pick, Austin.
- 4:51Speaker 2: What do you think what should we do? Should we
- 4:54Speaker 2: get on the same page? We got to get on
- 4:56Speaker 2: the same page here. I mean, I don't know that
- 4:57Speaker 2: that to me because if I'm Austin and all this
- 4:59Speaker 2: is going on, I'm.
- 5:01Speaker 3: Like, hmm.
- 5:03Speaker 1: Hmmm, Like he's Oero for two in the press conferences.
- 5:07Speaker 3: Oh he's he's an AI guy. He can't Well. The
- 5:13Speaker 3: tough thing about it is that Peka came out and
- 5:16Speaker 3: said that his first order of business is to like
- 5:19Speaker 3: rebuild the back end and then you get the first
- 5:21Speaker 3: overall pick. He's probably like.
- 5:23Speaker 2: Fuck he wanted wingers.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Yeah, he probably was hoping he'd get like three or
- 5:29Speaker 3: four and then you could because there's a couple of
- 5:31Speaker 3: good d in there. Chase Reid, you know, Fairhawk defense.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Albert Schmidt's is a sneaky one for lat Via. They
- 5:38Speaker 3: watching during the Olympics. He's a big, big, big, brooding defenseman. Huge.
- 5:43Speaker 3: So I feel like he's like, fuck, he might trade down.
- 5:46Speaker 3: You know, if I'm him, I point he might get magic.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I'm gonna pick. You know, I'll trade down. I'll get
- 5:51Speaker 1: the defense when I want.
- 5:53Speaker 3: Yeah, trade down, laughing pick.
- 5:56Speaker 2: San Jose's laughing right now, laughing, laughing, right now. Second pick.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Just sit back in their lawn chair and just wait.
- 6:04Speaker 2: That's it.
- 6:04Speaker 3: I loved it that San Jose got number two, So
- 6:09Speaker 3: I'm gonna take my my my trip around the sun here.
- 6:12Speaker 3: That's a beautiful, beautiful thing.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Which defenseman jd or is it?
- 6:16Speaker 4: Like?
- 6:16Speaker 3: That's where I texted Samina right after, and I was like,
- 6:21Speaker 3: I was like, dude, I was like, do we get
- 6:23Speaker 3: a demon? And I'm like, I know Stenberg's the guy,
- 6:26Speaker 3: but you know, you got Misa, you got you know Maclin.
- 6:31Speaker 3: I mean, you could build this roster up front in
- 6:34Speaker 3: fucking an instant with Stenberg and you have you have
- 6:38Speaker 3: a forward group that's set for the next eight to
- 6:40Speaker 3: ten years. It feels like but then, you know, I'm
- 6:44Speaker 3: also looking like, you got Chase Reed, He's a bona
- 6:47Speaker 3: fide you know, first power play defenseman. You got bear Hoff,
- 6:52Speaker 3: you got Schmidt.
- 6:54Speaker 2: You know.
- 6:54Speaker 3: I'm like, do you go off the board? Do they
- 6:57Speaker 3: trade down?
- 6:57Speaker 2: Maybe?
- 6:58Speaker 3: But San Jose, I mean, god damn it, are we
- 7:02Speaker 3: sitting pretty right now?
- 7:04Speaker 4: Ready right now?
- 7:05Speaker 3: Like quit the network and just go work full time
- 7:07Speaker 3: for the Sharks.
- 7:08Speaker 2: Now, that's the first thing I thought of what I saw.
- 7:12Speaker 2: I was like, oooh, San Jose, San Jose looks nice
- 7:15Speaker 2: right now right there.
- 7:16Speaker 1: Just because everyone's had an opinion on the press conference, JD.
- 7:18Speaker 1: I do want to get your thoughts on this a
- 7:20Speaker 1: little bit, John Jake, as you said recently, I think
- 7:22Speaker 1: you were on the fan in Toronto saying, you know,
- 7:23Speaker 1: he traded for me, had a good relationship with him,
- 7:25Speaker 1: nothing bad to say, but the guy obviously went through
- 7:27Speaker 1: a lot of things there. I'm not going to dispute that,
- 7:29Speaker 1: you know, a situation with Shane doone, which is why
- 7:31Speaker 1: biz Nasty is out turning on the leaves, very memorably
- 7:33Speaker 1: telling Leaf fans he's out, he's down on them, which
- 7:36Speaker 1: has been very entertaining on social medium press converence itself.
- 7:39Speaker 1: I'll say this, JD. And you know this, if someone's
- 7:41Speaker 1: gonna criticize you, I always think a little humor goes
- 7:43Speaker 1: a long way. So when Steve Simmons goes at you,
- 7:45Speaker 1: there's no way. Keith Pelly and Shake these guys don't
- 7:48Speaker 1: know it's coming. Like at some point someone's gonna go, hey,
- 7:50Speaker 1: you hired this guy, like seriously. But I would have
- 7:52Speaker 1: thought when Steve again, Steve is certainly has a strong
- 7:55Speaker 1: reputation and he's come out and he was with our
- 7:57Speaker 1: buddy E. J. E. Radachis, he goes this is I
- 7:59Speaker 1: wasn't trying to be insulting. I was being blunt, Like
- 8:01Speaker 1: the hockey world is astounded by this decision, Like he goes.
- 8:03Speaker 1: People still reaching out to me, Like I reached up
- 8:05Speaker 1: to a couple and they said, gay, wait wait, dude,
- 8:07Speaker 1: Chake is no good. He sucks, he's this he's a conman.
- 8:09Speaker 1: He goes, that's why I said that stuff. I'm like,
- 8:11Speaker 1: I wasn't. I'm thinking of everyone is just in shock.
- 8:13Speaker 1: I'm saying what everyone else is thinking. Which I appreciate
- 8:15Speaker 1: that kind of honesty. But Pelly's response to dating, he
- 8:18Speaker 1: just kind of goes, Okay, that's it. Like that, that's
- 8:20Speaker 1: your response to it. I think a little humor there
- 8:22Speaker 1: would have been helpful. So if I say to you
- 8:24Speaker 1: tomorrow's well, you're gonna hire Nate. This guy's a conman,
- 8:26Speaker 1: he's and liars of shit like Nate Thompson. Are you
- 8:28Speaker 1: out of your mind? And you go give me the
- 8:30Speaker 1: nineteen names all happy to have a conversation with them
- 8:33Speaker 1: and we'll get after it, like something like just something
- 8:35Speaker 1: on those lines where you know, just a guest. We've
- 8:37Speaker 1: talked to different people. Now I talk to Freebry about
- 8:39Speaker 1: it and Frieze goes, I've been around corporate people and
- 8:41Speaker 1: their their view is nothing to see here, just don't.
- 8:44Speaker 2: Give them anything.
- 8:45Speaker 1: I don't know if that's the right approach, but the
- 8:47Speaker 1: least certainly got blasted for the way they handled the
- 8:49Speaker 1: whole situation.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Or Matt Sunde and I saw him at the Olympics,
- 8:53Speaker 3: you know, with his entourage doing Swedish radio, and then
- 8:57Speaker 3: now he's saying he's in the next he's in the
- 9:00Speaker 3: for Toronto, and then shit eating grin when they got
- 9:02Speaker 3: the first overall peg just you have unbelievable Yeah, yeah.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Either way, they didn't seem prepared necessarily for what was coming.
- 9:10Speaker 1: But they're in it now. Everyone knows the leaves are
- 9:12Speaker 1: in it now. And like Nate said, the ball's in
- 9:14Speaker 1: your court now. Boys, you do what you gotta do.
- 9:15Speaker 1: You want to trade down that pick, you want to
- 9:17Speaker 1: take the pick. Shake is only thirty six years old,
- 9:19Speaker 1: by the way, which is crazy to think about it.
- 9:20Speaker 1: It's kind of been your point, Gad, he's saying he
- 9:22Speaker 1: was only twenty six. We have the job again. Mistakes
- 9:24Speaker 1: for makes everyone knows that he's been how the leagues
- 9:26Speaker 1: is twenty twenty, but it's still shocking what's gone down.
- 9:28Speaker 3: And well, if you were when we were twenty six,
- 9:31Speaker 3: if we'd have got that much power, Yeah, you're bound
- 9:34Speaker 3: to make a mistake. You're not immune to to you know,
- 9:39Speaker 3: everything around. And I think he the biggest mistake was
- 9:43Speaker 3: the Shane Doan and you know, not surrounding himself with
- 9:46Speaker 3: with guys that had played in the league, Guys that
- 9:50Speaker 3: loved the franchise, you know, are big reason the franchise
- 9:53Speaker 3: state as long as it did with Shane Doan. So
- 9:56Speaker 3: I agree with Biz on that of like, you know,
- 9:58Speaker 3: the whole thing with Shikes. But again, he's a twenty
- 10:00Speaker 3: six year old, Like we had a lot of guys
- 10:02Speaker 3: on the team. I was older than Shikes when he
- 10:04Speaker 3: was there, So it's like and I was thirty three
- 10:07Speaker 3: making tons of mistakes, So it's like it's gonna happen.
- 10:11Speaker 3: I mean, do I think he was there was a
- 10:14Speaker 3: lot of other picks for that job. Yes, But do
- 10:16Speaker 3: I think that somebody now that he has it, deserves
- 10:19Speaker 3: to see what he can do. To Nate's point, like, hey,
- 10:23Speaker 3: you got the first overall pick, you got your team,
- 10:25Speaker 3: blank canvas, sort of go to work. Let's see if
- 10:28Speaker 3: you can actually prove us all wrong. And I think
- 10:31Speaker 3: if you know, he did a good thing by our
- 10:34Speaker 3: you know, Toronto did a good thing by parking Matt
- 10:36Speaker 3: Sundee next to him. So now you have a guy
- 10:38Speaker 3: that's been there, a legend, that hopefully can help. And
- 10:41Speaker 3: my thought is that he's going to handle all the
- 10:44Speaker 3: big stuff, and Matt's is going to be around the
- 10:46Speaker 3: team day to day, beyond the road. You know, He's
- 10:49Speaker 3: going to be kind of the forward facing guy, which
- 10:52Speaker 3: I think is what they should have done in Arizona
- 10:53Speaker 3: with Chain. But again, twenty six years old, fucking mistakes
- 10:58Speaker 3: were made.
- 10:59Speaker 1: So now you do the same thing that Chake has
- 11:01Speaker 1: running the team. But matts Adine will be the face
- 11:02Speaker 1: up there. He'll take all the bullets, so to speak.
- 11:05Speaker 2: I wonder because I mean, I don't know. I mean,
- 11:07Speaker 2: when you do things like that in the past, obviously
- 11:09Speaker 2: it affects your relationships with other gms around the league.
- 11:12Speaker 2: And how is that gonna happen? How is that going
- 11:15Speaker 2: to hang? Like? How is he going to handle that? Like?
- 11:16Speaker 2: Is Matt's gonna have to get on the speakerphone with
- 11:18Speaker 2: him when they call other gms to help him out?
- 11:20Speaker 2: You know, because I mean, if I'm other GM, and
- 11:23Speaker 2: that's got to be a that's got to be a
- 11:25Speaker 2: point here, I would imagine for him. You know, I'm
- 11:28Speaker 2: all for second chances, I am, But I think I
- 11:30Speaker 2: wonder how, you know, John, if he calls a GM
- 11:34Speaker 2: and he wants to make a deal, if some GMS
- 11:37Speaker 2: are reluctant to talk to him, you know, I think
- 11:39Speaker 2: that's going to be a big, a big point probably.
- 11:43Speaker 1: Meantime Oilers eliminated in six games by Anaheim Connor mcdavidson.
- 11:46Speaker 1: The team was average all season. Leon Dreysol said he
- 11:49Speaker 1: was concerned the team and taking big steps backwards. Clock's
- 11:53Speaker 1: ticking right now, Nate. When it comes to McDavid and Edmonds,
- 11:55Speaker 1: and how they fix it is bowman out? Is comatos Chris, Chris?
- 11:58Speaker 1: No block out? What's going on?
- 12:01Speaker 2: Changes need to be made. I mean, they were right.
- 12:03Speaker 2: I love that Connor and Leon came out and said this,
- 12:06Speaker 2: and we're so candid and and Leon especially, I mean,
- 12:09Speaker 2: he said it. He talked about I know, and JD's
- 12:12Speaker 2: talked about before too. Like he said it. He talked
- 12:14Speaker 2: about the guys that they've missed on and the guys
- 12:16Speaker 2: that they've had in the past and you look at
- 12:18Speaker 2: their roster when they went to the First Cup twenty
- 12:20Speaker 2: twenty four. But I mean, just how much different it
- 12:22Speaker 2: is now? And I mean it's not even comparable. Yeah,
- 12:25Speaker 2: I mean you look at it and they are. They
- 12:27Speaker 2: were average. They got beat by a better team than
- 12:29Speaker 2: the Ducks. And I don't know I've for the Edmonton
- 12:33Speaker 2: Oilers before. I mean, they they got some serious I
- 12:38Speaker 2: think the other thing, that's another one is they have
- 12:40Speaker 2: a lot of changes they have to be made. But
- 12:42Speaker 2: they got to get on the same page with Connor
- 12:44Speaker 2: and Lehon Now. I think that's probably because they're they're flustered,
- 12:47Speaker 2: they're not happy and moving forward for the Oilers. Yeah,
- 12:51Speaker 2: this is uh, this is another another so os out
- 12:55Speaker 2: of Edmonton.
- 12:57Speaker 3: Yeah there. I love what Leon said, I love what
- 13:00Speaker 3: Connor said. Listen, they put pressure on the organization. I
- 13:03Speaker 3: think you have to do that. You know, you put
- 13:06Speaker 3: the ball squarely in their court. You know, Connor played
- 13:09Speaker 3: through injury I think somewhat in the playoffs and you know,
- 13:12Speaker 3: carried the team. They didn't have a great team all
- 13:14Speaker 3: season long. They were average. They didn't go on any
- 13:17Speaker 3: lengthy winning streaks. They were just kind of meh. All year,
- 13:21Speaker 3: we're kind of always just like, eh, are they going
- 13:22Speaker 3: to turn it on? It looks like they're going to
- 13:24Speaker 3: turn on. Nope, they're not so But you know, I
- 13:27Speaker 3: think it's it's time for them to to figure it out,
- 13:32Speaker 3: and it's time for them to sit down with Connor
- 13:34Speaker 3: and Leon and see what they want. And I do
- 13:37Speaker 3: love the candidness by them of being listen, Leon going
- 13:43Speaker 3: we got two years. It's like, we have two years.
- 13:46Speaker 3: Connor is here is contracts for two years. I don't
- 13:49Speaker 3: know what he's gonna do. We have two years, and
- 13:51Speaker 3: what's to say in two years that Leon doesn't turn
- 13:53Speaker 3: around and say fucking trade me.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Well. The other party too, is when they say they
- 13:56Speaker 1: have two years, you're right theoretically they do on paper,
- 13:59Speaker 1: but almost feel like they have one year. Like this
- 14:01Speaker 1: next year, damn to say I got what you left over?
- 14:03Speaker 3: Right, he won't play. It's there needs to be significant
- 14:07Speaker 3: change in terms of you know, and they've been everybody's been.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Everybody's been yelling and moaning and groaning about the decoor
- 14:15Speaker 3: and the goaltending. So it's like if you got to
- 14:19Speaker 3: shoot the moon and get Jordan Bennington, because that's the
- 14:21Speaker 3: only guy or you gotta find somebody else. It's time
- 14:23Speaker 3: to do it now. But again it's tough. They're in
- 14:27Speaker 3: a tough position. And the other the other funny thing
- 14:31Speaker 3: about it is that now with Leon and Connor saying
- 14:34Speaker 3: that every GM is probably licking their lips, being like, well,
- 14:37Speaker 3: they're going to panic and they're going to make a move.
- 14:39Speaker 3: So you know, sometimes when there's smoke, you know Bowman's
- 14:43Speaker 3: gonna wait, maybe till a couple months into the season.
- 14:46Speaker 3: But I mean the words out that those two guys
- 14:49Speaker 3: aren't happy. So again you talk about Nate people not
- 14:53Speaker 3: picking up the phone for Chika. They might look at
- 14:55Speaker 3: Bowman and be like, let's just run this bitch out.
- 14:59Speaker 3: We'll take a shot at Connor Wall take a shot
- 15:02Speaker 3: at Connor Stan.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Bowman's with a disaster. But this guy, he thinks he
- 15:05Speaker 1: improves his goal to JD. He gives him when Skinner
- 15:07Speaker 1: gets Jarry. Now you're handcuffed by a worse contract and
- 15:10Speaker 1: you treated a pick for Dickinson. The team's gotten worse.
- 15:13Speaker 3: Yeah, the Skinner trade is that one's gonna hurt. Oh,
- 15:18Speaker 3: that was gonna sing. And then the fact that it
- 15:20Speaker 3: doesn't look little by all accounts, it looks like they
- 15:24Speaker 3: don't like him, like personally, and he doesn't like them.
- 15:27Speaker 3: So it's like this weird, this weird fucking thing that
- 15:31Speaker 3: like they just want to get rid of him. So
- 15:33Speaker 3: I'm assuming they're gonna eat some money and he's going
- 15:36Speaker 3: to go somewhere or he's gonna get sent down, But
- 15:38Speaker 3: I can't see him being their starter come at the
- 15:42Speaker 3: beginning of the year.
- 15:42Speaker 1: Last team. Then we'll get to the actual hockey from
- 15:44Speaker 1: last night. The Lightning failed to get out of the
- 15:46Speaker 1: first round fourth straight season. Nikita Kuchrov from Braydon Point
- 15:49Speaker 1: combined for two goals in seven games against the hap
- 15:53Speaker 1: somehow Montreal with less than ten shots on goal nine
- 15:55Speaker 1: shots on goal winning game seven. Victor had been missed
- 15:58Speaker 1: the series against Montreal to attend to his mental health.
- 16:00Speaker 1: That's wanted to ask you about, Nate. You and GD
- 16:02Speaker 1: have spoken about mental health. It's important as former players,
- 16:05Speaker 1: you know it. What happened to headman and what does
- 16:07Speaker 1: this meaning for the team next season.
- 16:10Speaker 2: I can't speak for Heady as far as what happened,
- 16:12Speaker 2: but I mean, obviously you know there's a big mental
- 16:14Speaker 2: health component here and he took time away which good
- 16:17Speaker 2: for him. You know, you you got to take care
- 16:19Speaker 2: of your head. I respect that. And then for the Lightning,
- 16:23Speaker 2: I mean, this one's tough. I mean, four years in
- 16:25Speaker 2: a row and you said it, you know, coach point
- 16:29Speaker 2: kind of non existent in the series. You know, they
- 16:32Speaker 2: and I would say this, if they played that game
- 16:34Speaker 2: seven ninety nine out of one hundred times, damp is
- 16:37Speaker 2: probably winning that hockey game. But that's game Seven's that's hockey.
- 16:41Speaker 2: And Montreal found a way. And I actually I really
- 16:45Speaker 2: liked what andre Vassilevski said in his postgame presser. You know,
- 16:50Speaker 2: he was candid about it too. He just came out
- 16:52Speaker 2: and said it. So it's not good enough. We we
- 16:54Speaker 2: got to figure it out and we have to get
- 16:56Speaker 2: the job done. And we didn't stay with Coochs he
- 16:58Speaker 2: talked about too, We didn't produce. So yeah, this is
- 17:03Speaker 2: there's gonna be some tweet for this team. I think that,
- 17:06Speaker 2: you know, if you lose in the first round four
- 17:08Speaker 2: years in a row, you got to you got to
- 17:09Speaker 2: make a little bit of changes. The big question obviously
- 17:12Speaker 2: is Darren Radish. How do they keep him? I mean
- 17:17Speaker 2: I would think I mean, even from his post apress
- 17:19Speaker 2: it seems like he's not coming back. It was more
- 17:21Speaker 2: of like a thank you to the Tampa Bay Lighting
- 17:23Speaker 2: for everything that he's done for the last however how
- 17:25Speaker 2: many years he's been there, four years? Yeah, I don't know,
- 17:29Speaker 2: so for the Lightning. Yeah, this is they got to
- 17:34Speaker 2: figure it out because you know, you lose. Well, they're like,
- 17:37Speaker 2: so I had him winning the I hadn't winning in
- 17:39Speaker 2: the bracket.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Done.
- 17:42Speaker 3: Now I don't.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Know.
- 17:45Speaker 2: It's it's tough.
- 17:48Speaker 3: Yeah, I listen again there if Radish leaves, it's like, well,
- 17:54Speaker 3: who do you have coming in? You know, there's there
- 17:57Speaker 3: are some guys available, but and they got a lot
- 18:00Speaker 3: of question marks, a lot of question marks all over there.
- 18:05Speaker 3: You know, you're you're now losing. I mean, man, it's
- 18:10Speaker 3: it's tough because do I think that this is a
- 18:13Speaker 3: team that you know, when I really watched them, because
- 18:16Speaker 3: they watched that series a lot, and I was like,
- 18:20Speaker 3: you know, is this a team that can win a
- 18:22Speaker 3: Cup in every game? I kind of left being like,
- 18:24Speaker 3: this is a fantastic series, but neither one of these
- 18:27Speaker 3: teams is making it past Buffalo or Carolina. I just
- 18:32Speaker 3: was like I just don't see it, you know, like
- 18:35Speaker 3: it just it was it was sloppy. It was you know,
- 18:39Speaker 3: bradon point. I'd listen to his press conference. I like
- 18:41Speaker 3: what he said. He where He's like, I got to
- 18:43Speaker 3: go back to the drawing board because what I'm doing
- 18:46Speaker 3: isn't working. When I first started, He's like he and
- 18:49Speaker 3: I thought he was hurt all year and he's like,
- 18:50Speaker 3: I wasn't. He's like it just since he's been since
- 18:53Speaker 3: he's been back, he's like it just something's not working.
- 18:56Speaker 3: So and he's kind of a mentally gets in his
- 18:59Speaker 3: own head sometimes. But you know, I just look at
- 19:02Speaker 3: how much y'all kind of bullied him or in the series,
- 19:05Speaker 3: and then it wasn't fairly matched series, I believe, and
- 19:10Speaker 3: Dobesh was the difference maker. But you know, again, every
- 19:14Speaker 3: year you miss on winning the Cup and Nate, you
- 19:17Speaker 3: know this, things change on the roster and then everybody
- 19:20Speaker 3: gets a year older, and now Vasilevski is a year older,
- 19:23Speaker 3: Kutrov's a year older. That's a lot of miles on
- 19:25Speaker 3: these guys, so, you know, and the way that they've struggled,
- 19:29Speaker 3: I mean Vassilevsky talking about you know, and I love
- 19:32Speaker 3: the guys. The first ballot Hall of Famer he hasn't
- 19:34Speaker 3: won back to back games in the playoffs since twenty
- 19:35Speaker 3: twenty two. Brutal Uh, that's an interesting stat to look at.
- 19:39Speaker 3: That's that's a long time of not winning back to
- 19:42Speaker 3: back games in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Kutrov's got one
- 19:44Speaker 3: goal in like twenty two playoff games, twenty three playoff games.
- 19:48Speaker 3: That's a tough stat to look at, and it's like,
- 19:50Speaker 3: at what point, And this is always hard even with
- 19:53Speaker 3: like Coop is like, at what point does your past
- 19:58Speaker 3: you know, the past run they went on, that dynasty?
- 20:01Speaker 3: When does that we stop utilizing that as like, these
- 20:04Speaker 3: guys can still get the job done.
- 20:07Speaker 1: No doubt about it. Meantime, the game last night Abs
- 20:10Speaker 1: and Wild only one game and after that Wild nine
- 20:13Speaker 1: to six Colorado win over Minnesota last night five to
- 20:16Speaker 1: in game two. Nate Thompson on the desk for NHL
- 20:18Speaker 1: Tonight with jameson Coyl and Corey Schneider. They got a
- 20:21Speaker 1: long breakdown Nate for a game three Seconday night in Minnesota.
- 20:24Speaker 1: So the while I can reflect on what's gone down.
- 20:26Speaker 1: Giving up fourteen goals in two games, Colorado starts the
- 20:29Speaker 1: playoff six to zero, the record for consecutive wins to
- 20:31Speaker 1: start the postseason is nine by the Oilers in nineteen
- 20:33Speaker 1: eighty five. Love McKinnon last night, throwing the body around,
- 20:36Speaker 1: getting some hits, and obviously their offense is just dynamic.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I know it's the mccarr and Hughes Show, but it
- 20:41Speaker 1: feels like it's gonna be Colorado Show. What'd you make
- 20:42Speaker 1: a Game two?
- 20:44Speaker 2: I thought Minnesota played a lot better. The big the
- 20:48Speaker 2: big X factor was how bad their penalty kill is,
- 20:51Speaker 2: and you know, ugly, it was bad. It was really bad.
- 20:55Speaker 2: And that was a difference I thought, because I thought
- 20:56Speaker 2: Minnesota five on five played a lot better than they
- 20:59Speaker 2: did in Game one, and kind of you know, from
- 21:01Speaker 2: the second period, holp, we do the second until the
- 21:03Speaker 2: third until Colorado got their next power play goal, Minnesota
- 21:07Speaker 2: played well. I think this three day layoff is an
- 21:12Speaker 2: advantage for Minnesota for sure. You know, with Colorado having
- 21:16Speaker 2: all this momentum and a big one two guys for
- 21:20Speaker 2: the while, I mean not having Eric Sinak and Rodin
- 21:23Speaker 2: it hurts big time, especially Eric Sanac. I think just
- 21:27Speaker 2: him at center. I mean you look at their centers
- 21:29Speaker 2: without him in the lineup, and it's a big difference.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Just because he plays in every single situation, whether it's
- 21:34Speaker 2: p K power play, he's a bumper on the power play.
- 21:37Speaker 2: I mean he he's out there at the end of
- 21:39Speaker 2: the game, up a goal or down a goal. So
- 21:42Speaker 2: I and then you know, the big one for me
- 21:45Speaker 2: obviously was Gussulson too. I mean two shots, two goals
- 21:48Speaker 2: to start the game. I mean that first one back then,
- 21:51Speaker 2: I thought it was a little soft, and I don't know,
- 21:54Speaker 2: you just when a goalie starts like that, it's it's unsettling.
- 21:59Speaker 2: And you could just see a little bit like they
- 22:01Speaker 2: were weren't sure. He wasn't sure, he was guessing a
- 22:04Speaker 2: little bit. He settled in as the game went on,
- 22:07Speaker 2: but it was just kind of too little, too late.
- 22:08Speaker 2: And and you mentioned Nate McKinnon. Man, he was he
- 22:12Speaker 2: was an absolute force last night, just throwing his body
- 22:15Speaker 2: around and being the Nate Dog. So you know, I,
- 22:19Speaker 2: I don't know, Yeah, it just seems like Colorado they
- 22:23Speaker 2: every time Minnesota they would get some they would get
- 22:26Speaker 2: some momentum, they would out play him little bit, and
- 22:28Speaker 2: Colorado just they just need one serge or one rush,
- 22:30Speaker 2: and you know, those guys do their thing. They they
- 22:34Speaker 2: do they seem like a juggernaut that in a big
- 22:36Speaker 2: tidal wave that's going to be hard to stop.
- 22:40Speaker 3: Yeah, Scott Wedgwood, he was great. That was my our
- 22:45Speaker 3: backup in Arizona seven.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Crazy.
- 22:48Speaker 3: We were all like this guy, he's this guy's a gamer.
- 22:51Speaker 3: What a fucking gamer. This guy is God, He's good
- 22:55Speaker 3: all over the place. The little cat. Uh. Yeah, I
- 23:00Speaker 3: Minnesota can't win without brodyin and ERICSONECT. There's no chance
- 23:03Speaker 3: their d is it's it can't. They can't play Quinn
- 23:06Speaker 3: Hughes and brock Favor one hundred minutes, you know so,
- 23:10Speaker 3: And that was the most I've seen Quinn Hughes get
- 23:13Speaker 3: hit in his career. They were all over him. They
- 23:16Speaker 3: kind of figured something out a little bit, and and
- 23:18Speaker 3: and and they kind of it looked like they scouted
- 23:21Speaker 3: him after game one. And you could see every time
- 23:24Speaker 3: they were all waiting for that punch turn, and every
- 23:27Speaker 3: time he was hitting that punch turn, they were just
- 23:29Speaker 3: they're just leaning on them. And it happened like three times.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Nate Landeskotk they got in, they got it on Boldy.
- 23:36Speaker 3: I just think this is what happens, and again it
- 23:40Speaker 3: is what it is. But you know when you have
- 23:42Speaker 3: the we go back to the playoff seating, you know
- 23:44Speaker 3: that Dallas and Minnesota just kicked the shit out of
- 23:47Speaker 3: each other, and Minnie, I I knew it at the
- 23:49Speaker 3: start of the at the end of that series, I
- 23:51Speaker 3: was like, listen, even though Mini one and six or sorry,
- 23:54Speaker 3: even though Mini one and and they got through Dallas,
- 23:59Speaker 3: they're just so banged up and Pegosians out too. You're
- 24:03Speaker 3: just it's hard to to take that many licks and
- 24:06Speaker 3: then go play a fresh Colorado team that listen, this
- 24:09Speaker 3: team looks primed to win a Stanley Cup right now.
- 24:13Speaker 3: This is the biggest thing that can happen to them
- 24:14Speaker 3: in the series is not playing till Saturday. I'm sure
- 24:16Speaker 3: if I'm Colorado, I'm pissed off because if they played
- 24:20Speaker 3: on you know, Thursday, sorry, if they played like Friday, Sunday,
- 24:24Speaker 3: I think they it's over.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Wow.
- 24:27Speaker 3: But I think this Saturday, that extra day is going
- 24:29Speaker 3: to really help them. And then Wall said comes back in,
- 24:32Speaker 3: he'll reset, and you know, but yeah, it's just Colorado
- 24:37Speaker 3: looks so good man, and you watch the Vegas. I mean,
- 24:41Speaker 3: Vegas looks good too, But yeah, I just think Colorado's
- 24:46Speaker 3: just an easy, easy walk for them to the finals.
- 24:49Speaker 1: Starting the playoffs six and oer, the Hurricanes faced a
- 24:51Speaker 1: tough Ottawascott. Round one, they managed to sweep the Sins,
- 24:54Speaker 1: but then when the first two games they're series against
- 24:56Speaker 1: the Flyers team, they overwhelm Philly in the first period
- 24:58Speaker 1: of Game one. Flyers actually took a two I think lead.
- 25:00Speaker 1: In Game two a we're a power play goal. Sean
- 25:02Speaker 1: Katuri has been their best forward and still well. Carolina
- 25:05Speaker 1: wins this game in overtime. If the advanced JD, they'll
- 25:07Speaker 1: face either Buffalo, who won a playoff for first time
- 25:10Speaker 1: since seven, or Montreal, which won a playoff series the
- 25:12Speaker 1: first time since twenty twenty one. It felt like the
- 25:15Speaker 1: Eastern Conference is fairly wide open and the Western Conference
- 25:18Speaker 1: was Avalanche or bust. Well, the Avalanche stepped up. Is
- 25:20Speaker 1: it now Carolina with a clearer path of the Stanley
- 25:23Speaker 1: Cup Final.
- 25:24Speaker 3: If Freddie Anderson plays like this, there walk They're in
- 25:28Speaker 3: the finals easily. Like this. The biggest concern for Carolina
- 25:33Speaker 3: the last three years, every time they go in these
- 25:35Speaker 3: runs is goaltending always fades away and they kind of
- 25:39Speaker 3: just that pressure they give and the pressure they put
- 25:42Speaker 3: on the other team, they can't get enough run support,
- 25:45Speaker 3: and then the goaltender can't make those timely saves. Freddy
- 25:48Speaker 3: has is my con smyth right now. He has been
- 25:52Speaker 3: lights out in these games and a little bit of
- 25:55Speaker 3: a chink the early in game will In Game two
- 25:58Speaker 3: he gives up two. Everybody goes, oh, here's Freddy. He
- 26:01Speaker 3: made some fucking enormous saves in that game and in
- 26:04Speaker 3: the overtime, and the overtime Philly was all over them,
- 26:08Speaker 3: and you know, it was eerily similar to Game two
- 26:11Speaker 3: in the first round against Ottawa where they went to
- 26:14Speaker 3: this double ot Ottawa was all over them. Freddymates these
- 26:19Speaker 3: absolutely incredible saves and then they end up pulling out
- 26:24Speaker 3: that victory and then they just were Then then that
- 26:26Speaker 3: was it. And I think you look at Philly. I mean,
- 26:30Speaker 3: I think Philly and pitt were the two worst teams
- 26:33Speaker 3: in the East after we watched that first series, and
- 26:35Speaker 3: I kind of knew that this was going to be quick,
- 26:38Speaker 3: and I thought that was their push. Now Carolina just
- 26:41Speaker 3: needs to get one to two here in Philly. And
- 26:44Speaker 3: that's all she wrote. I think, So, you know, they've
- 26:46Speaker 3: they've played hard. They played hard in Game two, but
- 26:51Speaker 3: you know, I just don't think they have. When Sean
- 26:52Speaker 3: Couturier is your best player, hands down, I think you're
- 26:57Speaker 3: lacking something. I haven't. I haven't. Tk' has been running
- 27:00Speaker 3: around a lot connecting me, but I need to see
- 27:03Speaker 3: a little bit more from is connect.
- 27:05Speaker 1: Me missing that? Ye connecting miss That breakaway was a killer.
- 27:09Speaker 1: I mean he's he's your highest paid player, your top
- 27:11Speaker 1: but you've got very chances like that.
- 27:13Speaker 4: Yeah, you know.
- 27:17Speaker 2: That was That was the game Philly needed to win
- 27:19Speaker 2: if they were going to, you know, stay in the series.
- 27:22Speaker 2: I like the way they played. They played great. They
- 27:25Speaker 2: found you know, they had a good lead. And I've
- 27:27Speaker 2: been skeptical Carolina obviously for past reasons, but man, this
- 27:32Speaker 2: team is so impressive. Just the fact that you know
- 27:35Speaker 2: they're down to nothing and I was kind of worried
- 27:38Speaker 2: because Carolina, they haven't they haven't had to play from
- 27:42Speaker 2: behind yet in this playoffs, and you know, their team
- 27:45Speaker 2: that I don't know there's I was. I was skeptical
- 27:49Speaker 2: and they found a way.
- 27:50Speaker 5: Uh.
- 27:51Speaker 2: And then that second line, I mean, it's just been unbelievable.
- 27:54Speaker 2: And I'm with you. JD. Freddy's my playoff MVP two. Uh.
- 28:00Speaker 2: I I don't like, I've never seen him play this
- 28:01Speaker 2: well before. This is he's he's out of worldly right now,
- 28:05Speaker 2: how good he is. And then I think what Rod
- 28:08Speaker 2: Brindamore did, kind of making some adjustments too and getting Jarvis.
- 28:13Speaker 2: He's kind of moving around on the top line, moving
- 28:15Speaker 2: around his stall, and yeah, they gotta score two. Yeah,
- 28:19Speaker 2: I mean this Knes team, it looks I mean from
- 28:21Speaker 2: the outside looking in, it looks like a Carolina Colorado
- 28:24Speaker 2: collision course right now, the way that their hummetede playoffs,
- 28:27Speaker 2: it really does.
- 28:27Speaker 3: Yeah, that's who I have right now. I think Buffalo
- 28:30Speaker 3: Montreal it's an I think Buffalo is the only outlier.
- 28:34Speaker 3: I think that you know, they got some special cooking there.
- 28:37Speaker 3: But Carolina keeps this up and kind of you know
- 28:41Speaker 3: they're missing Nikishin too. And yeah, but that Heelers what
- 28:44Speaker 3: an add Nikolai Eelers was gamer. He's been He's been
- 28:48Speaker 3: fucking so good for this team. Man, such an underrated
- 28:52Speaker 3: pickup of like grabbing a guy that wasn't the most
- 28:56Speaker 3: highly touted free agent and no one everybody was kind
- 29:00Speaker 3: of talking about all the other big names. You grab him.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Everybody's like, oh yeah, you know, second line I'm like
- 29:05Speaker 3: this guy. I was saying this summer. This guy's a gamer.
- 29:08Speaker 3: He plays hard, he's so fast, he work fits on
- 29:11Speaker 3: this team. He has been such a perfect fit for them,
- 29:15Speaker 3: such a perfect fit.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Coming up after this, we'll talk to the Carl brothers,
- 29:18Speaker 1: stories of hockey, sibling rivalry, and so much more. Perhaps
- 29:22Speaker 1: I hated rivalry. Coming up right after this, our next
- 29:38Speaker 1: guest was draft from the seventh round two or the
- 29:41Speaker 1: third overall but the Tampa Bay Lightning of the two
- 29:42Speaker 1: thousand and NHL Draft. Running back to back national championships
- 29:46Speaker 1: at Shot at Saint Mary's, he recently computed his eighth
- 29:49Speaker 1: season as the head coach the hockey team at University
- 29:51Speaker 1: of Denver, which he ended by winning the program's third
- 29:54Speaker 1: national championship in five seasons. Last year, as head coached
- 29:57Speaker 1: the US national team of the Double Chef World Junior Championships,
- 30:00Speaker 1: leading them to the gold medal. This man just pisses
- 30:03Speaker 1: excellence and as the youngest head coach in NC Double
- 30:05Speaker 1: A Division one history, David Carl coach great. So much
- 30:09Speaker 1: to see it. Congrats another title that is eleven for
- 30:12Speaker 1: the program, the most in NC DOUBLEA Division one history.
- 30:15Speaker 1: How does this one differ from the previous runs.
- 30:19Speaker 6: I mean, they're all special, they're like your children, I
- 30:21Speaker 6: guess I hear people say that.
- 30:24Speaker 4: So, No, it is a.
- 30:25Speaker 6: Great honor to be able to win again, and that's
- 30:28Speaker 6: really proud of our guys. I think this year different
- 30:31Speaker 6: that you know, we've had adversity in the other two
- 30:34Speaker 6: championship runs, but certainly this one was you know, we lost.
- 30:38Speaker 6: I think we had a seven right game, you know,
- 30:40Speaker 6: losing streak or winless streak in the middle of January.
- 30:44Speaker 6: We were thirteen and eleven, We were on the bubble
- 30:47Speaker 6: to make the NBA tournaments, and so I just think
- 30:50Speaker 6: we probably hit it further bottom than we had in
- 30:53Speaker 6: previous years, which probably makes coming out of it a
- 30:56Speaker 6: little bit more rewarding.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Yeah, DC, you know, I congratulations by the way, you know,
- 31:03Speaker 2: when when you see you know, the way your team
- 31:06Speaker 2: won this year. Obviously it was unlike any other years
- 31:08Speaker 2: winning the national championship. This year, you said, with your
- 31:11Speaker 2: struggles halfway through the season and then coming on again.
- 31:14Speaker 2: You know, as a coach, and I've known you for
- 31:16Speaker 2: a long time, you know, are there any coaches that
- 31:20Speaker 2: you emulate or that you take stuff from, or maybe
- 31:24Speaker 2: during the season that you lean on or guys that
- 31:27Speaker 2: you call.
- 31:29Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I've been.
- 31:31Speaker 6: Really blessed have great mentors, you know through my coaching
- 31:35Speaker 6: career and Sween, George Buzzdecky, Derek Lalan, Jim Montgomery, you know,
- 31:41Speaker 6: just to name a few.
- 31:42Speaker 4: I mean, they're all guys who.
- 31:46Speaker 6: A lot of excellence between the three of them, and
- 31:47Speaker 6: so you have Moni and I actually had a really
- 31:49Speaker 6: good conversation in the middle of January about both of
- 31:53Speaker 6: our teams and talked to Derek Long quite regularly as well,
- 31:58Speaker 6: and so yeah, they're they're good, really good sounding boards,
- 32:01Speaker 6: you know, for myself and for staff, and you know,
- 32:06Speaker 6: those are certainly guys that lean on, you know, in
- 32:08Speaker 6: times of hardship to be able to try and make
- 32:10Speaker 6: it through.
- 32:12Speaker 1: It's important to have obviously great people around you. One
- 32:15Speaker 1: of your best players at Denver, Ze Bulliam, just had
- 32:17Speaker 1: a really tough rookie in the NHL, got trade to
- 32:19Speaker 1: a struggling team. Was a healthy, scratch, rein touch with
- 32:22Speaker 1: it all coach during these challenging times.
- 32:25Speaker 4: Yes, Eve and I spent some time on the phone
- 32:27Speaker 4: after the.
- 32:28Speaker 6: Trade and then it's first, you know, probably week or
- 32:31Speaker 6: two in Vancouver. We talked again, and yeah, I mean
- 32:36Speaker 6: you keep in touch with different guys, you know, throughout
- 32:38Speaker 6: the year, and you know, we're obviously we got our
- 32:41Speaker 6: own problems and things were trying to go through. But
- 32:45Speaker 6: you know, you you do come to Denver and you
- 32:47Speaker 6: come to the college system and you're part of it forever.
- 32:51Speaker 6: And so yeah, you certainly keep tabs on guys and
- 32:54Speaker 6: little texts here and there. They're all following it. He
- 32:56Speaker 6: bought a few dinners for the boys this year on
- 32:58Speaker 6: the road. But you know, I think z is the
- 33:02Speaker 6: type of kid that you know, he's very confident. You know,
- 33:07Speaker 6: I think they want him in large part to be
- 33:09Speaker 6: a part of the changing culture in Vancouver. And there's
- 33:13Speaker 6: a lot of the things that we talked about just
- 33:15Speaker 6: you know how challenging. Maybe it was different for him
- 33:18Speaker 6: to be on a team that was, you know, losing
- 33:20Speaker 6: a lot of nights and kind of what could he
- 33:22Speaker 6: do to one make himself better, but to make the
- 33:25Speaker 6: team better and and try and get him to think
- 33:28Speaker 6: a little bit more long term than on the immediacy
- 33:31Speaker 6: of like just you know, the losses are piling up,
- 33:33Speaker 6: and the frustration and you know, those types of things
- 33:36Speaker 6: so I don't know much and helped him, but you know,
- 33:40Speaker 6: I know he's gonna be a great player in the
- 33:41Speaker 6: league for a really long time, and you know, we're
- 33:44Speaker 6: certainly excited to follow his career and know he'll be
- 33:48Speaker 6: a part of our program for the rest of his life.
- 33:53Speaker 2: David, when you were playing, did you ever envision yourself?
- 33:57Speaker 2: You know, did you ever I guess, see the game
- 33:59Speaker 2: through a coaching lens, and and and for our fans
- 34:02Speaker 2: or listeners that you know, don't know. You know, your
- 34:05Speaker 2: playing career ended, you know, prematurely because of a heart
- 34:08Speaker 2: condition like and then you became an assistant or sorry,
- 34:10Speaker 2: a student assistant coach went Denver. You know, did you
- 34:13Speaker 2: ever envision that, you know that this is the way
- 34:16Speaker 2: it was going to go when you started gettingto coaching,
- 34:20Speaker 2: did you think it was going to go this deep?
- 34:22Speaker 6: Suthfu, I know not really, not only coaching was really
- 34:27Speaker 6: ever anything on my radar, certainly as a player. I
- 34:29Speaker 6: never thought of myself of going into coaching. I probably
- 34:34Speaker 6: you know my brother very well and probably saw myself
- 34:37Speaker 6: more on on that trajectory, going to school and trying
- 34:40Speaker 6: to play as long as I could and try and make.
- 34:42Speaker 4: A living and and.
- 34:44Speaker 6: Then get into some sort of business or real estate
- 34:47Speaker 6: or something of that nature. And certainly, you know, you
- 34:51Speaker 6: plan on God laughs, and I was given a different
- 34:55Speaker 6: set of circumstances to try and have to navigate at
- 34:58Speaker 6: the age of eighteen. I'm really thankful that the doctors
- 35:01Speaker 6: at the NHL Combine were able to you know, find
- 35:04Speaker 6: my condition and help me get the care I needed
- 35:06Speaker 6: at the Mayo Clinic and you know, have a great
- 35:09Speaker 6: care team there.
- 35:09Speaker 4: And again very fortunate to be.
- 35:11Speaker 6: On this side of the of the ground than the other.
- 35:14Speaker 6: And dem round or my scholarship, Tampa Bay still drafted
- 35:18Speaker 6: me in the seventh round that summer, and you know,
- 35:23Speaker 6: even coming to du it wasn't a foregone conclusion that
- 35:26Speaker 6: I would get into coaching. I think, you know, each
- 35:29Speaker 6: year my role kind of started really small and maybe
- 35:32Speaker 6: expanded throughout the year, and and then the next year
- 35:34Speaker 6: got a little bit bigger. And it really wasn't until
- 35:37Speaker 6: my junior year that we're in the middle of a
- 35:39Speaker 6: practice and the guys are doing a drill and Derek
- 35:42Speaker 6: Lallan and I were sitting there hanging out as Killer
- 35:46Speaker 6: and Glass were running a drill, and he said, you're
- 35:48Speaker 6: going to do this full time? Right, And I said,
- 35:50Speaker 6: do do what full time? And he goes coach and
- 35:53Speaker 6: I'm like, I don't know, I really thought of it,
- 35:56Speaker 6: and he goes, well, I think you should consider it.
- 35:57Speaker 4: I think you'd be really good at it.
- 35:59Speaker 6: So it's just funny in life, you know, I think
- 36:01Speaker 6: people are putting your life to help you and support
- 36:04Speaker 6: you in different ways. And I certainly didn't get through,
- 36:07Speaker 6: you know, what I went through by myself, and I
- 36:09Speaker 6: haven't accomplished what I've done as a coach by myself,
- 36:12Speaker 6: and so that really.
- 36:14Speaker 4: Made me think.
- 36:15Speaker 6: And oddly enough, Derek, after my junior year, he got
- 36:18Speaker 6: the head coaching job in green Bay, the USHL.
- 36:22Speaker 4: You know, he then had an opening.
- 36:25Speaker 6: After his first year, they won a championship, they won
- 36:27Speaker 6: the Clark Cup there in Green Bay. After replaced John Cooper,
- 36:30Speaker 6: and he had an opening. I was graduating. He called
- 36:34Speaker 6: and he was actually the guy who offered me my
- 36:36Speaker 6: first full time job in coaching and in hockey. So
- 36:40Speaker 6: I went from Denver to Green Bay, was there with
- 36:42Speaker 6: him for a year and a half and then ultimately
- 36:45Speaker 6: ended up back at Denver.
- 36:46Speaker 1: So it just.
- 36:49Speaker 4: It just the story's kind of obviously very unique, and it's.
- 36:53Speaker 6: Worked out the way it's supposed to and maybe not
- 36:56Speaker 6: the way it was planned. But I certainly feel very
- 36:58Speaker 6: blessed and fortunate to, you know, have the opportunities to
- 37:03Speaker 6: be able to prove people right and be put in
- 37:05Speaker 6: read situations you know, throughout my career.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Well, it's certainly a great stuff the way your career
- 37:10Speaker 1: is gone. And you know this wouldn't be ANHL in scripted.
- 37:13Speaker 1: That's something a little unscripted. So have at surprise for
- 37:15Speaker 1: you behind door number two, our next guest draft in
- 37:17Speaker 1: the second round, forty seventh overall by the San Jose
- 37:20Speaker 1: Sharks in the two thousand and three NHL Draft. He
- 37:22Speaker 1: went on to score forty five goals towarning eighty three
- 37:25Speaker 1: points at seven hundred and thirty NHL games with the Sharks, Lightning, Flyers,
- 37:28Speaker 1: and Predators. Prior to that, he won the Hobie Baker Award,
- 37:31Speaker 1: rule junior gold and back to back national championships at
- 37:35Speaker 1: the University of Denver. He's also the older brother of
- 37:38Speaker 1: our guest David Carl this week, and the best man
- 37:40Speaker 1: at both of Nate Thompson's weddings. Matt Carl, great to
- 37:43Speaker 1: see you buddy.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Guys, thanks only one of David so far.
- 37:50Speaker 1: Mattle start have been like to see you which your
- 37:54Speaker 1: little brother has done in such a short time your
- 37:56Speaker 1: alma matter. When did you realize he could have a
- 37:58Speaker 1: future as a coach?
- 38:00Speaker 7: Oh gosh, I mean I think grey when he got
- 38:02Speaker 7: diagnosed and just jump right into it during his undergrad
- 38:05Speaker 7: I mean, he was able to learn from from great
- 38:08Speaker 7: people at Denver and obviously just taking and run with it.
- 38:11Speaker 7: So it's it's been awesome to watch, you know, selfishly
- 38:13Speaker 7: as an alum. But you know, we're obviously dialed in,
- 38:17Speaker 7: even more so because he's a part of our family.
- 38:20Speaker 2: Were you at the game, Maddie, I.
- 38:23Speaker 5: Was, yeah, I want to wait for the flyers. Yeah.
- 38:26Speaker 7: This has been so regular with David that we usually
- 38:29Speaker 7: wait till the results on Thursdays before booking tickets. So
- 38:35Speaker 7: this time around that I brought my eleven year old
- 38:36Speaker 7: daughter or twelve now she's turned twelve this week, but
- 38:39Speaker 7: brought her out with me, so I kept me under
- 38:41Speaker 7: wraps in Vegas. That was probably a smart thing to
- 38:43Speaker 7: bring her out.
- 38:44Speaker 2: My next question is is like I guess now that
- 38:47Speaker 2: Dave is in the coaching side, I know you're doing
- 38:50Speaker 2: coaching in a way with your kids too, teaching hockey
- 38:54Speaker 2: and all those things. Are you guys having conversations all
- 38:57Speaker 2: the time about hockey, whether it's Denver, NHL like you
- 39:00Speaker 2: guys going back and forth on the phone, not too much.
- 39:03Speaker 7: I mean, David, he's been in the game longer than
- 39:06Speaker 7: I have now, and you know, and the drills he's
- 39:09Speaker 7: doing with his team are probably way more complex than
- 39:11Speaker 7: I can do with my kids. But so usually when
- 39:14Speaker 7: we're touching base, it's more family based and just how
- 39:17Speaker 7: everything's going off the ice outside of the rink and uh,
- 39:20Speaker 7: you know. But yeah, obviously we have talks about hockey,
- 39:22Speaker 7: but I think more of it's about the history of
- 39:25Speaker 7: the game and and that kind of thing versus what's
- 39:27Speaker 7: what's going on currently.
- 39:29Speaker 1: David, it's a many discussion about Matt joining the staff
- 39:32Speaker 1: at Denver.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Well, we've we'd have to move to Denver. I don't
- 39:37Speaker 4: think that's happening.
- 39:38Speaker 6: So a pretty good, pretty good gig there and nice
- 39:42Speaker 6: spot on the lake is made. No, So he's our
- 39:46Speaker 6: remote recruiter in the Minnetonka area where there's lots of
- 39:50Speaker 6: really good players, uh that we're on and so he's
- 39:54Speaker 6: just he's boots on the ground in Minnetonka and excels
- 39:57Speaker 6: here helping the pioneers. And his kids will infiltrate all
- 40:00Speaker 6: the ages here soon that we're recruiting, so.
- 40:04Speaker 4: That one will turn into five.
- 40:06Speaker 6: And I know his wife and Clancy's doing her load
- 40:10Speaker 6: as well, talking to moms in the rink.
- 40:12Speaker 4: So they're doing their part for sure, no doubt.
- 40:18Speaker 2: I'm gonna go back. I'm gonna go back a little ways,
- 40:20Speaker 2: and I'm gonna ask. I'm gonna ask, Matt, did you
- 40:24Speaker 2: ever envision I asked David the same thing. Did you
- 40:26Speaker 2: ever envision h David being a coach and this and
- 40:30Speaker 2: this obviously an elite coach like this, did you ever
- 40:33Speaker 2: see this happening?
- 40:35Speaker 5: Well? Not really, I mean we were kids.
- 40:36Speaker 7: It was, you know, dreaming, dreaming of playing together, and uh,
- 40:39Speaker 7: you know, so when when when the dream got ripped
- 40:42Speaker 7: right right from his hands, like when he was eighteen.
- 40:46Speaker 7: I don't think any of us envisioned this, but you know,
- 40:48Speaker 7: it's been awesome to track and I guess I, you know,
- 40:53Speaker 7: even I even think back to you know, when he
- 40:56Speaker 7: was an assistant there and having success and when the
- 41:00Speaker 7: du job opened up. I mean, he wasn't like he
- 41:03Speaker 7: was just handed to him. He had to work forward
- 41:04Speaker 7: and proved that he was the right guy. And obviously
- 41:07Speaker 7: I was in his corner. But and he obviously had
- 41:09Speaker 7: a lot of He got a ton of support from
- 41:11Speaker 7: the current players that were there that that you know,
- 41:15Speaker 7: went to bad for him. And you know, there was
- 41:18Speaker 7: obviously some question marks around some recruits that were there
- 41:20Speaker 7: at the time are coming in that you know, thought
- 41:22Speaker 7: they were going to be going there to play for
- 41:23Speaker 7: Jim Montgomery. And I don't David can correct me if
- 41:25Speaker 7: I'm wrong, but I don't think any of them, you know,
- 41:28Speaker 7: de committed or anything. They all stuck to to come
- 41:31Speaker 7: to dou and into playing for David, and you know,
- 41:34Speaker 7: he's ran with it from there. So it's been unbelievable
- 41:36Speaker 7: to watch. And as I said, it's ah as an alum.
- 41:39Speaker 7: You know, you're just super proud of him and the
- 41:42Speaker 7: program more importantly, and the success that they've been able
- 41:45Speaker 7: to have under his leadership.
- 41:47Speaker 2: What was the conversation like between you two when David
- 41:52Speaker 2: got the diagnosis initially, Yeah, I.
- 41:57Speaker 7: Mean I think there were a lot of emotions back then.
- 42:00Speaker 7: It was a long time ago in two thousand and eight.
- 42:02Speaker 7: But you know, I remember being insane at the time.
- 42:05Speaker 7: I think I was staying there for the summer, working out,
- 42:06Speaker 7: trying to get ready for the next season. And you know,
- 42:09Speaker 7: David had just finish up a pretty successful campaign at
- 42:12Speaker 7: Shaddick and you know, gearing up for the NHL draft,
- 42:16Speaker 7: and where was he going to land and he was
- 42:17Speaker 7: sending to go to Denver that fall, and you know
- 42:19Speaker 7: it was just hopefully not not a matter of if,
- 42:24Speaker 7: but when that you know, we'd be able to play
- 42:25Speaker 7: in the NHL together. So when that kind of just
- 42:29Speaker 7: came tumbling down overnight, it was it was pretty emotional.
- 42:32Speaker 7: So obviously Denver stepped up in a big way and
- 42:35Speaker 7: allowed him to go in there, and uh, you know,
- 42:37Speaker 7: year into scholarship and he was able to go to
- 42:39Speaker 7: school there, and I guess the rest is history from there.
- 42:43Speaker 1: And David, you've got three national titles to match too,
- 42:46Speaker 1: so you got the bragging rights in the family.
- 42:48Speaker 5: Now right, I'll correct you there, he's got four.
- 42:53Speaker 6: We got a great photo and him and I with
- 42:56Speaker 6: all the championships have been a part of and uh, now,
- 43:00Speaker 6: my my wife actually reminded me, she said, you have mathe
- 43:02Speaker 6: you need to do another photo as we've added another
- 43:05Speaker 6: trophy to it. So we're very proud to be a
- 43:08Speaker 6: part of the program and be a part of the
- 43:10Speaker 6: championships we have been.
- 43:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean it's I mean for you guys to
- 43:16Speaker 2: be sharing what is it? It's between the two of you?
- 43:18Speaker 2: How many is it? Then?
- 43:19Speaker 4: It's six?
- 43:20Speaker 2: Six? Right, I mean six national titles between the two
- 43:24Speaker 2: of you, like.
- 43:25Speaker 4: As many as Wisconsin.
- 43:27Speaker 2: So perspective there you go.
- 43:32Speaker 4: We're not competitive, is there?
- 43:34Speaker 2: No? No, not competitive at all. I've I've I have
- 43:38Speaker 2: never witnessed the competitiveness between you two. A little sarcastic there,
- 43:43Speaker 2: but as was there any was there a moment I
- 43:46Speaker 2: guess you know growing up between the two of you.
- 43:50Speaker 2: I know I was. I was a part of it
- 43:51Speaker 2: a little at times when you know, you guys are
- 43:56Speaker 2: you know, battling or whatever it is, and and you know,
- 43:59Speaker 2: you guys get in a situation where you know, you're
- 44:01Speaker 2: talking hockey and and you're you're thinking, okay, we're going
- 44:05Speaker 2: to try and make the NHL one day, like this
- 44:06Speaker 2: is our dream together. Was that something you guys talked
- 44:09Speaker 2: about when you guys were young, like, okay, this is
- 44:11Speaker 2: something we want to do one day.
- 44:15Speaker 5: God, yeah, I don't not.
- 44:19Speaker 6: I mean not to ruin your question, but no, I
- 44:21Speaker 6: don't think we ever had those conversations because we're five
- 44:25Speaker 6: years apart and so like, it wasn't ever. You know,
- 44:29Speaker 6: when Matthew left home, he was fifteen, sixteen years old,
- 44:32Speaker 6: I was ten, eleven years old. You know, I think
- 44:35Speaker 6: it was you know, Scott Gomez was kind of at
- 44:40Speaker 6: least my idol, you know, in Alaska and trying to
- 44:44Speaker 6: just follo him as a fan, but getting to college
- 44:46Speaker 6: hockey was really I think my goal probably at that age,
- 44:50Speaker 6: and Matthew's goals probably were a little bit different than mine,
- 44:54Speaker 6: given that he was just a little bit older and
- 44:56Speaker 6: where he was going with the NTDP and and all
- 44:58Speaker 6: of that. So I just think our age difference probably
- 45:03Speaker 6: allowed us to just be more fans of each other
- 45:05Speaker 6: than thinking that we were ever going to get the
- 45:07Speaker 6: opportunity to play together or do something together, because we
- 45:12Speaker 6: never went to high school together. We hardly went to
- 45:14Speaker 6: elementary school together, certainly never went to middle school together.
- 45:19Speaker 4: But you know, I think.
- 45:21Speaker 6: Because he left so early and then I left at fifteen,
- 45:24Speaker 6: I mean we always just I think again, we're.
- 45:27Speaker 4: Able to be each other's biggest fans.
- 45:29Speaker 6: Between the two of us and then our little brother
- 45:31Speaker 6: Alex as well, who left and went and played college
- 45:33Speaker 6: hockey too.
- 45:36Speaker 1: It's always great when there's so much sibbing rivalry, but
- 45:38Speaker 1: also you're all pushing each other to greater excellence. Matt,
- 45:41Speaker 1: I want to ask you. Nate was at Game six
- 45:43Speaker 1: last night as Flyers alumni with Todd Fedric, You and
- 45:46Speaker 1: Chris Pronger, one of my colleagues and Amazon Prime for
- 45:48Speaker 1: the Flyers Top Defensive Pairing and nine twenty eleven physical pairing,
- 45:53Speaker 1: great puck moving ability, that unbelievable coup on in twenty
- 45:56Speaker 1: ten memories of Prongs specifically, and I want to ask
- 45:59Speaker 1: you about this year's Flyers team.
- 46:01Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean Prongs.
- 46:03Speaker 7: You know, I'm on I'm not on social media as much,
- 46:06Speaker 7: but I'm on LinkedIn pretty actively now and he's He's
- 46:08Speaker 7: definitely getting his face out there a lot more, which
- 46:11Speaker 7: is good for the game. I think he's a big personality,
- 46:14Speaker 7: and yeah, it was. I mean I owe a lot
- 46:17Speaker 7: of my you know, my career after playing with him,
- 46:20Speaker 7: you know, to what he was, what I was able
- 46:22Speaker 7: to learn from him, and just a great guy. To
- 46:24Speaker 7: play with and learn from, and like I said, it's
- 46:27Speaker 7: great that he's getting more involved in the game now.
- 46:30Speaker 5: And then, yeah, it was awesome.
- 46:31Speaker 7: You know, anytime the Flyers can take down the Penguins,
- 46:34Speaker 7: I think any Flyers alum, I can appreciate that. And uh,
- 46:38Speaker 7: you know, I guess the one guy to ask, and
- 46:40Speaker 7: it would be maybe Max Talbot to see see what
- 46:42Speaker 7: he thinks of that series now. But uh, but yeah, no,
- 46:47Speaker 7: I mean, I I don't. I don't usually, you know,
- 46:49Speaker 7: I've you know, I bounced around a little bit and
- 46:51Speaker 7: Ate Nate bounced around a lot more than I did.
- 46:53Speaker 7: But you know, I I don't usually root for former teams.
- 46:56Speaker 7: My kids can't understand that. They asked me, like why
- 46:58Speaker 7: don't I like the Lightning or why don't I like
- 47:00Speaker 7: Nashville or you know, San Jose And I'm just a
- 47:02Speaker 7: fan of the game. But that was the first time
- 47:05Speaker 7: I think in a long time that you know, I'm
- 47:06Speaker 7: watching a playoff series. I'm like, I'm actually rooting for
- 47:08Speaker 7: the Flyers here and hoping that they can can pull
- 47:10Speaker 7: it off. And it's just eerily similar. I don't know
- 47:13Speaker 7: how many you know, if he has talked about it,
- 47:14Speaker 7: just the twenty twelve series that we had when I
- 47:17Speaker 7: was there and we were up through nothing, and obviously
- 47:21Speaker 7: Claude Drew, you know, made a statement there in Game six.
- 47:23Speaker 5: At home and didn't really have that last night.
- 47:26Speaker 7: But you know, the guys were able to find a
- 47:27Speaker 7: way to get it done, and you know, proud of
- 47:30Speaker 7: Danny Brier and what they've been able to do there
- 47:32Speaker 7: and hopefully you can continue to run here in the playoffs.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Yeah, the atmosphere was something else. It was. It was
- 47:38Speaker 2: tense in there though. It was like you could feel
- 47:40Speaker 2: the anxiety among the fans because they know. I mean,
- 47:43Speaker 2: I was telling these guys that, like it's it's funny.
- 47:46Speaker 2: They they know they know what was going to happen
- 47:48Speaker 2: if they went to Game seven. So they were they
- 47:50Speaker 2: were like, we got to finish this off tonight.
- 47:52Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 47:53Speaker 7: And I'm curious on if a fan, if the fans
- 47:56Speaker 7: are okay after that stick toss, like that wasn't just
- 47:59Speaker 7: like a light toss up in the crowd. That was
- 48:01Speaker 7: a he whipped that thing up there, And I'm sure
- 48:03Speaker 7: fans are all in there high five and and and
- 48:05Speaker 7: not really paying attention to like the celebrations. I think
- 48:07Speaker 7: had to come out of nowhere and smoke somebody.
- 48:10Speaker 2: Seriously, I have to ask you both, David, first, is
- 48:13Speaker 2: there is there a series that jumps out to you
- 48:16Speaker 2: guys that you've been really watching closely? I know for me,
- 48:19Speaker 2: I mean, Matt choked around how many teams I played
- 48:21Speaker 2: for it. We we joke that it's the Nate Bowl
- 48:23Speaker 2: Tampa in Montreal. That was hard for me to root
- 48:25Speaker 2: for too. So is there a series that jumps out
- 48:27Speaker 2: to you guys.
- 48:31Speaker 6: I'm going to steal Matthews. He'll probably go with this
- 48:34Speaker 6: hometown now in the wild, so I probably i'd stay
- 48:40Speaker 6: out last. See Anaheim Edmonton. It's the highest scoring series,
- 48:45Speaker 6: I think, really entertaining. Obviously As has been on long
- 48:49Speaker 6: runs the last couple of years and Anaheim's just kind
- 48:51Speaker 6: of starting to come on, so it's a little bit
- 48:53Speaker 6: of a clash of the old and the new. And yeah,
- 48:57Speaker 6: that's fun to watch and see some of these young
- 48:59Speaker 6: guys on, like like a Philly, I mean, they're really
- 49:02Speaker 6: young team.
- 49:03Speaker 4: And but also with Anaheim, we.
- 49:05Speaker 6: Have Troy Terry there, his first opportunity to play a
- 49:07Speaker 6: playoff game since he was at Denver, so really excited
- 49:11Speaker 6: for him and just seeing that team, you know, get
- 49:14Speaker 6: a chance at the team has been out of the
- 49:17Speaker 6: West last couple of years.
- 49:18Speaker 4: That one's been intriguing for me.
- 49:22Speaker 7: Yeah, I'll throw a little yeah wrench in this. And
- 49:25Speaker 7: the Boston Buffalo series has been pretty entertaining for sure.
- 49:29Speaker 7: I just see the the atmosphere in Buffalo. A former
- 49:32Speaker 7: coach of mine that was at Denver, David Knowswell seth
- 49:34Speaker 7: Appert and assistant on Lindy Rough's staff, and and I
- 49:39Speaker 7: was even joking around with another former dum It was
- 49:42Speaker 7: a good buddy, Chris Butler, you know he and I
- 49:45Speaker 7: you know, he was playing in Buffalo and I was
- 49:46Speaker 7: playing in Philly. That was the last playoff series that
- 49:48Speaker 7: was in that building. So I was joking around with
- 49:51Speaker 7: him that the last time there was a playoff game
- 49:52Speaker 7: in Buffalo. He never shaking hands, so it was It's
- 49:56Speaker 7: been cool to watch that series, and obviously there's an
- 49:58Speaker 7: a lasting connection there with Jeremie Swimming and that for
- 50:00Speaker 7: the Bruins, And there's a lot of drama, and there's
- 50:03Speaker 7: a lot of drama in every playoff series down in
- 50:05Speaker 7: the Tampa in Montreal series is awesome too. Just with
- 50:07Speaker 7: the first three games going overtime, and I always loved
- 50:10Speaker 7: the first round. It can be dangerous though. Luckily I
- 50:13Speaker 7: turned the TV off last night for the Vegas Utah game.
- 50:16Speaker 7: Otherwise I've been up pretty late, staying in the double overten,
- 50:19Speaker 7: so I don't have the luxury of just being able
- 50:21Speaker 7: to sleep in the morning with kids going to school
- 50:23Speaker 7: and stuff. So I gotta be careful what games I
- 50:25Speaker 7: get dialed into.
- 50:26Speaker 1: It's a good point once you start watching playoff hockey,
- 50:29Speaker 1: get sucked and you have to watch the end of it,
- 50:30Speaker 1: and then you're costing yourself. On nextic you said precious
- 50:32Speaker 1: sleep with the kids. Well more from tow will lets
- 50:34Speaker 1: you guys go go ahead?
- 50:35Speaker 8: Te Yeah, David, just curious you mentioned the age difference
- 50:39Speaker 8: between you and Matt. I'm assuming you were probably kind
- 50:41Speaker 8: of young when he first committed to Denver. I mean,
- 50:43Speaker 8: was that program? Did you know anything about that program
- 50:46Speaker 8: at that age? And was there a moment maybe while
- 50:49Speaker 8: Matt was there, where you first started to appreciate what
- 50:52Speaker 8: that program was, considering obviously the incredible career you.
- 50:55Speaker 5: Would go on to have there.
- 50:58Speaker 6: So I mean, as a family, we had season tickets
- 51:01Speaker 6: to the Uaa Sea Wolves, who played in the wha.
- 51:06Speaker 6: And so we'd spend a lot of our weekends with
- 51:09Speaker 6: our friends and our family at UA games, and we'd
- 51:12Speaker 6: see North Dakota and Denver and Minnesota, Wisconsin Tech, all
- 51:16Speaker 6: these you know, the old w c CHA all these
- 51:19Speaker 6: teams come up and play an courage and so, yeah,
- 51:21Speaker 6: we had a I think we all knew who Denver was.
- 51:24Speaker 6: And I don't want to take too much credit for it,
- 51:28Speaker 6: but I do remember telling Matthew he should go to Denver.
- 51:32Speaker 6: I don't know if you remembers that or not, but
- 51:33Speaker 6: I distinctly remember in our living room saying that that's
- 51:36Speaker 6: where I thought he should go.
- 51:37Speaker 4: He's looking at CC and Minnesota.
- 51:40Speaker 6: Thank god he chose Denver, because those two programs would
- 51:43Speaker 6: be a lot to handle in the family. But you know,
- 51:48Speaker 6: and then for myself, it was I went through the
- 51:52Speaker 6: process pretty extensively and did other visits. Wasn't a foregone
- 51:56Speaker 6: conclusion that I would say, go to Denver. And I
- 51:59Speaker 6: think Matthew did a great job kind of letting me
- 52:01Speaker 6: go through that process and having the experience, and ultimately, uh,
- 52:05Speaker 6: why is your heads prevailed and I ended up falling
- 52:08Speaker 6: in the footsteps and made a great decision.
- 52:12Speaker 2: I have one more question. I'm gonna I have to
- 52:14Speaker 2: ask this or I think, yeah, you guys both know
- 52:17Speaker 2: I might get in trouble from home, so I got
- 52:20Speaker 2: to ask, you know, being from Alaska and both you
- 52:23Speaker 2: guys being Alast being from Alaska as well, all of
- 52:25Speaker 2: us growing up together, you know, talk about you know,
- 52:27Speaker 2: I guess the pride that we have being from there,
- 52:30Speaker 2: and the amount of guys that you know, come up
- 52:32Speaker 2: through the leagues play in the NHL, and and how
- 52:35Speaker 2: important it is to us.
- 52:38Speaker 7: Yeah, it's it's a unique group. And any time I
- 52:41Speaker 7: hear about a kid from Alast. Actually this weekend there's
- 52:45Speaker 7: a team called the Alasta Blaze. I'm playing against my
- 52:47Speaker 7: seven year old. They're in the same pool, but they're
- 52:49Speaker 7: in the same same age group, so I'm hoping we
- 52:51Speaker 7: cross pass those guys. But uh, yeah, anytime you hear
- 52:54Speaker 7: about the next prospect coming out of Alaska or any
- 52:56Speaker 7: sort of connection there, you're definitely gonna try to follow them.
- 53:00Speaker 7: And and you know, yeah, you know when you and
- 53:03Speaker 7: I played against each other, been here, Gomer, Joey Krab,
- 53:06Speaker 7: Timmy Wallace, like the guys from our era that you know,
- 53:08Speaker 7: we all got the ability to play against each other professionally.
- 53:13Speaker 7: You know, it's just a unique experience and we all
- 53:15Speaker 7: shared something. I still have a photo in my basement
- 53:17Speaker 7: of you know, I don't know if it'll ever be replicated,
- 53:20Speaker 7: but you know, there are four of us from Alaska
- 53:22Speaker 7: all in the same NHL game, And you know, Nate
- 53:25Speaker 7: and I were playing in Tampa, and Joey crab And
- 53:28Speaker 7: and Gomer were playing in Florida, and uh and I
- 53:30Speaker 7: think Gohmer sent us a big frame photo of that,
- 53:33Speaker 7: and I have that hang in my basement still. So
- 53:35Speaker 7: that's a pretty special collectible item that I'll never take down.
- 53:38Speaker 7: And then you know, it's always nice to be able
- 53:40Speaker 7: to go back home. You know, I know I don't
- 53:42Speaker 7: live up there anymore. I just none of us do.
- 53:44Speaker 7: But I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything. And you know,
- 53:47Speaker 7: it's always awesome when you know we get the opportunity, uh,
- 53:50Speaker 7: you know, from a guy like Brian Kraft who owns
- 53:51Speaker 7: the Alaska Sportsman's Lodge, to to get us back up
- 53:54Speaker 7: and and do you know, a fishing trip with the
- 53:56Speaker 7: guys at a world class facility like he has. It's
- 53:59Speaker 7: always a unique trip and awesome to be able to
- 54:02Speaker 7: get back home and and uh WeLive our childhood memories.
- 54:06Speaker 2: Which we got to do not too long ago. The
- 54:08Speaker 2: three things here. We went on a fishing trip together,
- 54:10Speaker 2: which is nice.
- 54:12Speaker 1: Great to reallyve those memories. David Carl obviously a great
- 54:15Speaker 1: success with Denver Macarly, terrific NHL career and now coaching
- 54:18Speaker 1: as well. And best of luck with the kids. Congratulate
- 54:20Speaker 1: all your success, guys. You're making Alaska proud.
- 54:22Speaker 5: Well done, awesome, thank you.
- 54:27Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 54:33Speaker 1: Our man Nate is fighting for more than a few
- 54:35Speaker 1: yawns coming off of late and an NHL tonight, but
- 54:37Speaker 1: he did not do the Cardinals sin. To me, it's
- 54:39Speaker 1: okay from the yon. But as long as you cover
- 54:41Speaker 1: the ywn Nate, thankfully every time. I don't have to
- 54:43Speaker 1: see your tonsils. You're covering the yawn right now working
- 54:45Speaker 1: with Holli these late nights impact. Do you mean you're
- 54:47Speaker 1: on the West coast? Are on the East coast?
- 54:50Speaker 2: A little more cup of joe for you, A lot
- 54:52Speaker 2: a lot of caffeine, that's what it's for. Yeah, it's
- 54:56Speaker 2: it is what it is. It's a playoffs, man. You
- 54:58Speaker 2: gotta you gotta grind right, it's the playoffs. So it's
- 55:01Speaker 2: the playoffs for everybody. I like, it's a playoffs for everybody.
- 55:04Speaker 1: Big news on Tuesday, JD NHL announcing Matthew Schaeffer, Yvon Demidoff,
- 55:09Speaker 1: and Beckett Seneca three finals for the Calder Trophy. As expected,
- 55:12Speaker 1: Shaffer should run away with the award. What do you
- 55:14Speaker 1: make of maybe the three player's name, but also any
- 55:16Speaker 1: surprises or potential snubs just to throw out the names.
- 55:19Speaker 1: I think it was as expected. But Jimmy Snuggarut, Ryan Leonard,
- 55:22Speaker 1: yak Abdobish, Yesper Volstad.
- 55:26Speaker 3: For what the Calder? Yeah, Matthew Schaeffer, move on next?
- 55:31Speaker 2: Yeah, oh yeah, it's not even close.
- 55:33Speaker 1: Okay, how about Bill Masterton, Jonathan taves I, listen, Rasmus
- 55:39Speaker 1: dallianis you get the three?
- 55:43Speaker 3: The Rasmus Dollien wants an interesting story because most of
- 55:46Speaker 3: the time it's the guy. It's personal injury. This is
- 55:50Speaker 3: really a mental injury in the sense of you know
- 55:53Speaker 3: your significant other, you know your your wife, your fiance.
- 55:58Speaker 3: But like that's a tough, tough, tough thing to come
- 56:02Speaker 3: out and not only do that but lead the team.
- 56:04Speaker 3: I think you know that's that's that's a very unique outlier,
- 56:08Speaker 3: and I think that would be something pretty cool for
- 56:10Speaker 3: him to get the award, him and his fiance to
- 56:12Speaker 3: get that award because you know, she's been his rock,
- 56:15Speaker 3: and from what he said in the media, and you
- 56:18Speaker 3: knowing your rock is kind of struggling and it's hard.
- 56:21Speaker 3: You don't know what to do as a player when
- 56:23Speaker 3: you have that support system to lean on and you're
- 56:25Speaker 3: having a play and also deal with this personal struggle
- 56:29Speaker 3: that has nothing to do with hockey. It is very
- 56:33Speaker 3: difficult to kind of separate the two. So and then
- 56:35Speaker 3: he went on to lead this team and they're, you know,
- 56:38Speaker 3: in the second round of the playoffs and have a
- 56:40Speaker 3: chance to do something special in Buffalo. So to me,
- 56:43Speaker 3: it would be probably him. Taves is a cool story
- 56:45Speaker 3: as well because how long he took off, But just
- 56:48Speaker 3: the personal side of it with you know, bigger than
- 56:51Speaker 3: hockey a little bit for me.
- 56:52Speaker 1: Quick thought that on the Jack Adams does Lindy Rouff
- 56:56Speaker 1: win the award after Buffo was terrible at first one?
- 56:58Speaker 1: So it's you good at Coop because Coop's never won,
- 57:00Speaker 1: but you and party seeing we out coach John Cooper,
- 57:03Speaker 1: So who wins?
- 57:06Speaker 2: I'd probably give it to Lindy Rough. I think with
- 57:09Speaker 2: with with their season and what happened where they were.
- 57:14Speaker 3: John.
- 57:15Speaker 2: I know this one's tough, but I I think Marty
- 57:18Speaker 2: sat Luis should have been in this running too. I
- 57:19Speaker 2: think the job he did with Martreal, I totally agree.
- 57:22Speaker 2: I think he should have been in the top three.
- 57:24Speaker 2: I thought he what he's done with this team and
- 57:26Speaker 2: how much better they've gotten even since the beginning of
- 57:29Speaker 2: the season. You look at him now, It's.
- 57:39Speaker 1: Team was awesome.
- 57:48Speaker 5: Uh.
- 57:48Speaker 3: Marco Sturm I like as well. Dan amuse Dan.
- 57:52Speaker 1: Damn muses up for the final. I think Dan might win.
- 57:55Speaker 3: Dan should win, just from what we saw in that
- 57:57Speaker 3: Philly series. How bad that team actually is. God, what
- 58:01Speaker 3: a bad fricking team that was.
- 58:03Speaker 2: They're not in the second round j D Exactly. In
- 58:07Speaker 2: the second round they beat the Pends that that we
- 58:10Speaker 2: all picked.
- 58:11Speaker 3: I'm talking about Pitt. Yeah he's sing and I'm not
- 58:15Speaker 3: talking about talk. I'm taking a pit Yeah, Pitt, they're stinky.
- 58:21Speaker 3: They figured it out too late. Uh oh yeah, I think.
- 58:24Speaker 4: Uh.
- 58:24Speaker 3: I like Marco Sturm. No one talks about him. He's
- 58:26Speaker 3: been great. He was great because again, when you watch Boston.
- 58:30Speaker 3: You know, lack of talent they have, not to say
- 58:32Speaker 3: lack of talent. Everybody that's on that team should be
- 58:33Speaker 3: in the NHL, but black high end talent.
- 58:37Speaker 1: So and the last thought, we haven't had talent at all.
- 58:40Speaker 1: So Tally can talk a little. Habs Dobish, the rookie
- 58:43Speaker 1: goalie paying tribute to his Andre Batsilevsky beat in Tampa
- 58:46Speaker 1: Bay's goalie head to head, Dobish allot four goals in
- 58:49Speaker 1: the last three games the series, nine to sixty goals
- 58:51Speaker 1: against those games, talking ship to Nikita kucher Off, the
- 58:55Speaker 1: entire time fifth rookie goalie in Canadian's history to win
- 58:58Speaker 1: a game seven after Jacques plump, Ken Dryden, Patrick Watt
- 59:01Speaker 1: and Kerry Price. Your thoughts on Dobish and the Apps
- 59:05Speaker 1: roll right now gets the Savers. Let's go tell is.
- 59:08Speaker 9: Someone getting dough besh dough besh dough besh dough besh
- 59:13Speaker 9: of you?
- 59:14Speaker 4: Yes, good jat.
- 59:15Speaker 1: He's not the only song in dance man, that's a
- 59:17Speaker 1: good one.
- 59:19Speaker 2: I've been saving that one for.
- 59:23Speaker 1: You know, It's it's been fun.
- 59:25Speaker 9: I have no idea what to expect in round two,
- 59:27Speaker 9: but do Beese's emergence is the talk of that series
- 59:32Speaker 9: in the Habs postseason. This was a guy who was
- 59:35Speaker 9: keeping the seat warm for Montembau while he got his
- 59:38Speaker 9: game together.
- 59:39Speaker 3: That never happened.
- 59:40Speaker 9: Then he was just holding the crease for Jacob Fowler
- 59:43Speaker 9: until he was ready to be the starter and the
- 59:45Speaker 9: number one. That hasn't happened yet. He just keeps going
- 59:49Speaker 9: and going. Incredible poise for a rookie. And uh, I
- 59:53Speaker 9: mean going toe to toe with Andrey Vasherlevsky and coming
- 59:56Speaker 9: out on top is pretty incredible.
- 59:59Speaker 3: Yeah, dope, do besh what a special series he had
- 1:00:05Speaker 3: against Tampa out dueling the big cat Massilevsky. But yeah,
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: there's a chance in this series for Montreal and this
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: is a good hockey team as well. Well. Coached falls
- 1:00:18Speaker 3: on the shoulders of Yahkub And I mean the fact
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: that he was so kind of up and down during
- 1:00:27Speaker 3: the season and he did have some mental struggles. Guys
- 1:00:31Speaker 3: talked about how he's very hard on himself. He remember's
- 1:00:34Speaker 3: six and ot to start and then he lost his
- 1:00:35Speaker 3: first game and he cried and you're like we're like,
- 1:00:37Speaker 3: oh shit, oh here he goes this guy, and then
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: he was he kind of every thought Fowler was the guy. Yeah,
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: and then he just firmly stepped up and you see
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: what he can do with confidence. Man, he was he
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: was so good in that game seven man was he
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: It's one of the better games and performances I've seen.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: And it kind of reminds me again. He reminds me
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: of the anti Niemi season in with Chicago, you know
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: where he came kind of kind of came out of nowhere.
- 1:01:05Speaker 3: Younger goalie was around, you know, and wasn't the guy
- 1:01:09Speaker 3: and just tuck the net and team just took off.
- 1:01:13Speaker 3: So we'll see what happens. But Buffalo's gonna be tough,
- 1:01:17Speaker 3: tough series from I can't wait for Game one.
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: Oh yeah, both those buildings gonna be unbelievable. Buffalo's gonna
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: be great, obviously, is gonna be fantastic. All right, go ahead.
- 1:01:27Speaker 3: We gave a quick thoughts and Prayersavoi Montreal.
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: Yes, good call, good good call.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: Sorry, super nice man, Uh, very scary. What happened. I
- 1:01:44Speaker 3: hope he's okay, but yeah, that was that was tough.
- 1:01:47Speaker 3: He's he's been a staple in Montreal to the Canadians
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: and and just a great, great human being.
- 1:01:51Speaker 10: I know, Nate, you've crossed. A lot of you called
- 1:01:54Speaker 10: some games. So he's all right, yeah no, that was that.
- 1:01:56Speaker 10: That's I mean, I I echo that. That's let's let's
- 1:02:00Speaker 10: hope he's all right. That's he's he's a good man.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: All right, good Steph is always from all the felt
