Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: On The Opportunity Of Making New Memories
Transcript
- 0:18Speaker 1: Hey, everybody, Emily a body coming to you, not from
- 0:21Speaker 1: the AG studio, but rather from my Boston hotel room.
- 0:25Speaker 1: I mentioned this before, but I am doing a fair
- 0:28Speaker 1: amount of traveling this month, and I have been in
- 0:31Speaker 1: Boston for the week. I'm here through the marathon on Monday,
- 0:36Speaker 1: heading back home on Tuesday, and really enjoying the change
- 0:40Speaker 1: of scenery. The energy up here is electric. I want
- 0:43Speaker 1: to wish well wishes, good luck, happy running to everyone
- 0:48Speaker 1: that's going to be heading out there this coming Monday.
- 0:51Speaker 1: I believe I'll be cheering around mile twenty five, but
- 0:54Speaker 1: if you want to know exactly where I will be,
- 0:57Speaker 1: I will make sure to post that on Instagram as
- 0:59Speaker 1: I get a better idea.
- 1:01Speaker 2: Closer to the race. But I'm so excited to be
- 1:04Speaker 2: up here.
- 1:04Speaker 1: And if you don't have plans tomorrow evening and you
- 1:07Speaker 1: want to be entertained, I'm going to be sitting down
- 1:09Speaker 1: with Des Linden live and you can stream it, so
- 1:14Speaker 1: I will include the link to do that. Thanks to
- 1:16Speaker 1: my friends at Inside Tracker for connecting us. I'll put
- 1:19Speaker 1: that link in the show notes. So for today's episode
- 1:22Speaker 1: of Five Minute Friday, I want to talk a little
- 1:24Speaker 1: bit about reframing, which is something that I have spoken
- 1:27Speaker 1: about here in the past and relevant to my experience
- 1:31Speaker 1: this week. I am currently reframing and making new memories
- 1:36Speaker 1: based on my time in Boston. So for two reasons,
- 1:40Speaker 1: first and foremost, when I ran the Boston Marathon, it was,
- 1:44Speaker 1: I believe, twenty eighteen notoriously known as the worst weather
- 1:49Speaker 1: conditions goodness, I mean from a cold perspective. I know
- 1:53Speaker 1: it's been quite hot here many times, but the year
- 1:55Speaker 1: that I ran the Boston Marathon, there was hail like
- 1:58Speaker 1: sixty mile an hour, gust of wind, elites had dropped
- 2:02Speaker 1: out because of hypothermia, like, the conditions were just awful,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and it was a very very very hard day to
- 2:09Speaker 1: run a marathon. And I did the thing, and I
- 2:11Speaker 1: was so and am still so proud of that effort.
- 2:15Speaker 1: But because of that effort, I always joke that although qualifying,
- 2:19Speaker 1: although I have qualified for the Boston Marathon, at this point,
- 2:22Speaker 1: I just don't think that I have.
- 2:23Speaker 2: An interest in doing it again.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And then I remembered, upon coming and checking into one
- 2:29Speaker 1: of two hotels that I'm saying in this week, I
- 2:31Speaker 1: remembered that the last time I was at the first hotel,
- 2:35Speaker 1: was the weekend that I got out of my last relationship.
- 2:39Speaker 1: We had come up here, I me and my partner
- 2:40Speaker 1: at the time to go to a run with the
- 2:43Speaker 1: Midnight Runners and Rebok, and we toured around the city
- 2:47Speaker 1: and made a whole weekend of it. And then when
- 2:49Speaker 1: we got back to New York, he like sat me down,
- 2:51Speaker 1: he was like, We're done. And you know, I guess
- 2:56Speaker 1: you could say, considering those two stories, that I don't
- 2:59Speaker 1: have the fond.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Memories of spending a lot of time in Boston, but
- 3:04Speaker 2: I recognize that, you know, every single day we have
- 3:07Speaker 2: an opportunity to reframe and to make new memories.
- 3:11Speaker 1: And this is also something that I talked with earlier
- 3:13Speaker 1: this week with Rebecca Sofer from Modern Loss about when
- 3:17Speaker 1: she was chatting about the memories that we have with
- 3:22Speaker 1: people who we may not have in our lives anymore,
- 3:25Speaker 1: maybe they have passed, or perhaps the relationships have just dissolved,
- 3:29Speaker 1: and rather than thinking about everything through a negative lens
- 3:34Speaker 1: or thinking about how things aren't the same anymore, we
- 3:36Speaker 1: have that chance to then reframe and to rejigger and
- 3:41Speaker 1: to redo. And so for me in Boston this week,
- 3:45Speaker 1: I have a lot of really great things going on.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I'm here, like I said, through Tuesday, and I'm just
- 3:51Speaker 1: really looking forward to kind of reclaiming some of this
- 3:54Speaker 1: space and some of my energy and smiling maybe a
- 3:58Speaker 1: little bit more and getting to see people I haven't
- 4:02Speaker 1: seen in a really long time coming together in community
- 4:05Speaker 1: and that feels really, really nice. So my question for
- 4:11Speaker 1: you this week is what's going on in your life
- 4:14Speaker 1: that maybe you can look at through a different lens.
- 4:17Speaker 1: What opportunity can you take hold of to rewrite your
- 4:22Speaker 1: narrative to reclaim your story? Again? My prompt for you
- 4:25Speaker 1: this week, what opportunity can you take hold of to
- 4:28Speaker 1: rewrite your narrative to reframe your story with something that's
- 4:32Speaker 1: going on right now for you? And now a listener question.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Hey, Emily, this is Amber from Nashua, New Hampshire originally
- 4:44Speaker 3: Worcester and my question is based off of the hats
- 4:48Speaker 3: question that you got for last week. I would like
- 4:51Speaker 3: to know where you get your style inspiration from. You
- 4:55Speaker 3: always look so classic and functional, like you'd be able
- 4:59Speaker 3: to I don't know New York, but fifty blocks to
- 5:03Speaker 3: go somewhere to get a coffee and your nails are
- 5:06Speaker 3: always so on point, Like what's your where do you
- 5:10Speaker 3: get your outfit ideas from? And like, what does your
- 5:15Speaker 3: closet look like? Could we see your closet? Like, I
- 5:18Speaker 3: have so many clothes and I feel like I can
- 5:20Speaker 3: never find any outfit in the idea of paring down
- 5:23Speaker 3: just terrifies me. Thanks so much.
- 5:26Speaker 2: What up Amber?
- 5:27Speaker 1: Okay, So admittedly this question came through a little while ago,
- 5:29Speaker 1: but I'm just getting to it. So style inspiration, I
- 5:33Speaker 1: definitely will save things that I like when I'm scrolling
- 5:37Speaker 1: or whatever and think about what a situation might be
- 5:41Speaker 1: where I could use this outfit at a later time.
- 5:43Speaker 1: Like sometimes I'm shopping very far ahead, especially like I mentioned,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I'm traveling right now, so I like to know, you know,
- 5:51Speaker 1: what's going on in my schedule a month out, sometimes
- 5:54Speaker 1: in the best case scenario, a little more than that,
- 5:58Speaker 1: and all like just advanced plan so to speak. So,
- 6:03Speaker 1: for example, I saw someone wearing a cropped blazer a
- 6:07Speaker 1: few months ago. I loved the look. I knew I
- 6:09Speaker 1: had that talk in DC coming up last month, and
- 6:13Speaker 1: so I bought that blazer with that talk in mind.
- 6:16Speaker 1: I very rarely buy clothes to just buy clothes. I
- 6:21Speaker 1: almost always buy clothes because I know of a thing
- 6:25Speaker 1: that I can use that particular item for. I am
- 6:28Speaker 1: back on rent the Runway right now, although I'll admit
- 6:31Speaker 1: I'm not totally sold on a lot of the stuff
- 6:34Speaker 1: that I've been seeing on there lately, but I have
- 6:38Speaker 1: been finding it very useful for things that are like
- 6:42Speaker 1: one and done when it comes to weddings or events.
- 6:46Speaker 1: I don't have, you know, endless amounts of cash just
- 6:49Speaker 1: to put things in my closet only to wear them once.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So the things that are coming into my closet these
- 6:54Speaker 1: are more staple items, items that I'm more like on
- 6:58Speaker 1: board with investing in, and then I just figure out
- 7:02Speaker 1: how to repurpose them and use them for all different moments, occasions,
- 7:06Speaker 1: et cetera. When it comes to functionality, I mean, I'm
- 7:10Speaker 1: a queen of functionality. I will wear a lot of
- 7:13Speaker 1: different sneakers. As you know, you asked if you could
- 7:16Speaker 1: see my closet. Obviously on a podcast you can't really
- 7:19Speaker 1: see things, but painting a picture. There are literally like
- 7:24Speaker 1: seventy pairs of sneakers stored in over the door sneaker
- 7:28Speaker 1: holders and above the shelf, and a lot of clothes
- 7:31Speaker 1: which I now need to switch out based on seasons.
- 7:34Speaker 1: But for me, it's all about pairing like comfortable basics together.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I do have, you know, some heels and like not
- 7:45Speaker 1: sneakers in the rotation, but I my god, I feel
- 7:49Speaker 1: like the last two times I've worn heels, I've like
- 7:52Speaker 1: blistered immediately. For me, it's all about comfort. It's all
- 7:55Speaker 1: about what I feel good in my body with. It's
- 7:57Speaker 1: all about saving stuff to use later for style inspo.
- 8:03Speaker 1: I guess that's it for this week. Thanks for hurdling
- 8:06Speaker 1: with me. I feel like I'm in such a weird mood.
- 8:09Speaker 1: I am so grateful for all of you, and I
- 8:12Speaker 1: just yeah, I'm really grateful for you. Thanks for keeping
- 8:19Speaker 1: up with me. Make sure you're following along to do
- 8:21Speaker 1: more of that over at Hurdle Podcast. I'm over at
- 8:24Speaker 1: emily A Baddy another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
