- 0:02Speaker 1: Coming to you from fabulous Las Vegas. The right side
- 0:07Speaker 1: is the winning side. The late move is the correct move.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Sports betting capital of the world. We all know when
- 0:14Speaker 1: a sharp like me weighs in the lines move, it's
- 0:17Speaker 1: a party for your ears. This is the buffet with
- 0:26Speaker 1: Chat and Scooch. I want to buy that guy at buffet.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Here we go. Welcome to the buffet with Chat and Scooch.
- 0:36Speaker 1: It is a massive week this week. It is Masters Week,
- 0:40Speaker 1: and in the betting community, Masters is a huge opportunity.
- 0:46Speaker 1: There are millions of props to play, there are matchups
- 0:50Speaker 1: to play. There's a lot of dfs going on in
- 0:53Speaker 1: the Masters in Masters week. This week is the first
- 0:58Speaker 1: week for our newest employee, who happens to be the
- 1:04Speaker 1: premier golf writer of his generation. Jason Sober is on
- 1:10Speaker 1: the line. He has been hired by the Action Network
- 1:14Speaker 1: to cover golf for US leading ESPN after about two decades. Jason,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I'm really happy here on the phone with me. I'm
- 1:24Speaker 1: really happy you're writing for the Action Network. I'm really
- 1:26Speaker 1: happy you're covering golf for us. How you doing, Chat,
- 1:30Speaker 1: I'm great, Thanks for having me on the pod. Of course,
- 1:32Speaker 1: on my first day work. I really couldn't say though
- 1:34Speaker 1: to you literally, but no, it's uh, dude, I am
- 1:39Speaker 1: so excited to get on board and get get working
- 1:42Speaker 1: with everybody. You guys have impressed me a lot just
- 1:44Speaker 1: in the kind of run up to uh, to me
- 1:47Speaker 1: working here, and now that I'm actually on board officially,
- 1:51Speaker 1: I can't wait to get going. We're gonna do some
- 1:53Speaker 1: great things. So I'm really excited about everything. And look
- 1:56Speaker 1: better a week to get started as a master's week, right, boy,
- 1:59Speaker 1: the toning on that was nice. Yeah, we just have
- 2:01Speaker 1: to figure that out. Huh. Yeah, we're geniuses like that.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But listen, you've got a seriously legit resume. Um four
- 2:11Speaker 1: Emmy's eight time Golf Writer of the Year. What I'm
- 2:17Speaker 1: gonna correct you on that chat, you said that you
- 2:19Speaker 1: asked me for for some credentials to send out to
- 2:21Speaker 1: the company, and the company email I said I had
- 2:24Speaker 1: won eight Golf Writers Association America awards over the years,
- 2:28Speaker 1: and somehow the company email went out I was the
- 2:31Speaker 1: eight time Golf Writer of the Year. And I'm still going.
- 2:33Speaker 1: I mean, I'll take it. There's not actually a thing,
- 2:36Speaker 1: so I don't there if there was one of those
- 2:39Speaker 1: that maybe I would have wanted, but definitely not eight times. Listen,
- 2:43Speaker 1: we're in the age of hyperbole, so I'm totally okay
- 2:48Speaker 1: with that. And by the way, it's not like anyone's
- 2:50Speaker 1: checking those company emails. So I think we're I think
- 2:54Speaker 1: we're a really good ship. And you've also won four Emmies,
- 2:56Speaker 1: which is pretty cool. I did. I always told people,
- 2:59Speaker 1: I mean and uh, yes, I have Emmy's uh and
- 3:03Speaker 1: my wife has four Emans. She worked at the ESPN
- 3:05Speaker 1: as well. So we've got eat Emmy sitting up on
- 3:07Speaker 1: this like big shelf up in our house trying to
- 3:09Speaker 1: have to show him off too much or up really high.
- 3:12Speaker 1: Um so so you gotta look up to to actually
- 3:14Speaker 1: see and people always think their fake. But with a
- 3:17Speaker 1: caveat again, and I'm not trying to downplay this, I'm
- 3:19Speaker 1: not trying to be humbled. But I won for working
- 3:22Speaker 1: on the TV side of the FPN. I was a
- 3:26Speaker 1: uh production assistant, an associate producer, highlights supervisor producer. UH.
- 3:30Speaker 1: I kind of ran the gamut when I was on
- 3:32Speaker 1: the TV side, But I won because Sports Center won
- 3:35Speaker 1: for the best show and something else won for best show,
- 3:38Speaker 1: so it wasn't like I did anything. The shows, we're
- 3:40Speaker 1: gonna win anyway, and I just have to like write
- 3:42Speaker 1: their coattails and get the Emmy. So again, it sounds
- 3:44Speaker 1: really good in the company email when you're introducing me
- 3:47Speaker 1: to everybody, and it's all true. But I mean, you know,
- 3:51Speaker 1: I just kind of I just kind of hung out
- 3:53Speaker 1: and uh did some work every once in a while.
- 3:55Speaker 1: On the handed me a big troph. I thought, Uh,
- 3:59Speaker 1: the oscar you got for the technically work you did.
- 4:03Speaker 1: Uh in the legend of bagger Vance was I thought
- 4:08Speaker 1: that was the coup de grace got well when you can't.
- 4:15Speaker 1: As as people probably know, you and Lynn Manuel Miranda
- 4:20Speaker 1: were instrumental in both the book and the score for Hamilton's.
- 4:27Speaker 1: If you heard me saying they would take away any
- 4:29Speaker 1: award that I want already, they'd say, I don't care
- 4:32Speaker 1: if it was for writing, like, you don't deserve have
- 4:34Speaker 1: an award based on your voice. I actually kind of
- 4:37Speaker 1: thought it was amazing that when you were nominated by
- 4:40Speaker 1: the Independent Party for President of the United States, you
- 4:44Speaker 1: ultimately deferred to Ross Perot, And I thought that was
- 4:48Speaker 1: a class apup a lot of people out there who
- 4:52Speaker 1: might wish that I was the president, right now. But UM, yeah, no,
- 4:56Speaker 1: just just another laws than in my career. I listen
- 5:00Speaker 1: to whatever whatever awards you've won, real or imagined that
- 5:05Speaker 1: I have given you credit for in the past twenty
- 5:07Speaker 1: four hours. I have no doubt that over the next
- 5:11Speaker 1: several many, many years, UH, you're going to be winning
- 5:15Speaker 1: them in spades. For the Action Network. At the very least,
- 5:20Speaker 1: you're gonna write really good stuff and make people smarter, UM,
- 5:25Speaker 1: and bring in an audience that UH is excited to
- 5:28Speaker 1: continue to follow you, and most importantly, they're gonna want
- 5:32Speaker 1: to follow you as we get into the Masters. UM.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And you posted your first piece went up late last night,
- 5:39Speaker 1: all about Tiger And this is what I loved about
- 5:40Speaker 1: the piece is you did two things really well. You
- 5:44Speaker 1: examined how tigers failings as a player actually UM get
- 5:52Speaker 1: absorbed by Augusta and you didn't through the eyes of
- 5:56Speaker 1: Phil Mickelson and Jordan's speef, which is not easy to do, UM.
- 6:01Speaker 1: But that's a testament to sort of your connection. So
- 6:03Speaker 1: explain what you did in the piece. Well, I think
- 6:07Speaker 1: that over the years, players have become accustomed to being
- 6:10Speaker 1: asked about other players, certainly, but more specifically about Tiger Woods.
- 6:14Speaker 1: And there's sort of two ways you can go about
- 6:17Speaker 1: asking another player about Tiger Woods. One is just sort
- 6:21Speaker 1: of brutally bluntly hit him over the head with it
- 6:23Speaker 1: and say, hey, so Tiger's playing, now, what do you think?
- 6:27Speaker 1: And just get right in with the question, and for
- 6:29Speaker 1: the most part, guys will answer it. I mean, it
- 6:31Speaker 1: depends on the time of day, depends on the mood.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I mean, if you guys just walked off the golf
- 6:36Speaker 1: course and shot seventy nine and you say, hey, what's up, buddy?
- 6:39Speaker 1: Can I ask you about Tigers round today? You're probably
- 6:42Speaker 1: not gonna get a very thoughtful response. But uh, there's
- 6:45Speaker 1: another way of doing it in a more subtle way,
- 6:47Speaker 1: And that's how I went about it in this case.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And that's why I asked Phil Mickelson and Jordan's Speed,
- 6:53Speaker 1: each of them past Master's champions, sort of a Tiger
- 6:56Speaker 1: Woods question without ever mentioning Tiger's name. And the question
- 7:00Speaker 1: I asked each of them was can you succeed at
- 7:03Speaker 1: Augustin National without having your A game off the tea?
- 7:07Speaker 1: And it's my surprise a little bit each of them
- 7:11Speaker 1: basically cut me off and without hesitation, started answering and said, yes, absolutely.
- 7:17Speaker 1: Unlike a lot of golf courses on the p G
- 7:20Speaker 1: E Twour these days, driver is not the most important
- 7:23Speaker 1: club in the bag at Augustin National, It's it's more
- 7:25Speaker 1: of a second shot golf course. Obviously. Uh, your wedge
- 7:29Speaker 1: game needs to be terrific. You need to be able
- 7:32Speaker 1: to make some putts. Um. All of that stuff is
- 7:34Speaker 1: very important. Um, but driver, because they are wide fairways,
- 7:39Speaker 1: there really isn't any rough. Uh. You can spare your
- 7:42Speaker 1: driver around it. And I thought Chad was really interesting
- 7:45Speaker 1: that Jordan's speed said driver is not the most important
- 7:48Speaker 1: club in the bag, but you have to hit driver.
- 7:51Speaker 1: You can't go out there and hit three woods and
- 7:53Speaker 1: irons off the tea and expect to keep up. He said,
- 7:55Speaker 1: you need to move it out there. You need to
- 7:58Speaker 1: be able to give yourself a chance to go for
- 8:00Speaker 1: the par fives and two. Uh, to pick up some
- 8:03Speaker 1: strokes or at least not lose any strokes against the field.
- 8:06Speaker 1: That said, if you spray it out there, as long
- 8:08Speaker 1: as you're moving it, as long as you're hitting it
- 8:10Speaker 1: at decent distance. Even if you're spraying, you're not gonna
- 8:13Speaker 1: get yourself into that much trouble. Long story short or
- 8:16Speaker 1: maybe not short at all. This plays right into the
- 8:18Speaker 1: hands of Tiger Woods, who has struggled with only the driver.
- 8:22Speaker 1: I mean, he looks dead on with his iron so
- 8:25Speaker 1: far this year. His short game might be as good
- 8:27Speaker 1: as anybody right now, I think is His wedge game
- 8:31Speaker 1: around the greens is really as good as it's been
- 8:34Speaker 1: in an awfully long time, as good as anybody else's
- 8:37Speaker 1: right now. And this putting, especially from inside ten twelve
- 8:40Speaker 1: feet has been very strong, So really the only club
- 8:43Speaker 1: in the bag there's effective as the driver. He's got
- 8:45Speaker 1: a little bit of a two way miss gooing at times,
- 8:47Speaker 1: but if he's gonna miss the ball, he can miss
- 8:50Speaker 1: it this week and still succeeds Augusta, do you feel
- 8:54Speaker 1: like um? The way they build courses these days is
- 9:00Speaker 1: tour geared tours, accentuating the use of the driver off
- 9:06Speaker 1: the team. It is, and that's the only way that
- 9:11Speaker 1: I think a lot of course designer earth and let's
- 9:13Speaker 1: let's about course, there is more, uh, the officials that
- 9:16Speaker 1: set up the golf courses. It's the easiest way to
- 9:19Speaker 1: counteract the fact that so many guys out there now
- 9:22Speaker 1: are six three, six four to each one he built
- 9:25Speaker 1: like NFL linebackers. You look at the guy like Gustin
- 9:28Speaker 1: Johnson are totally fee now or Gary Woodland. I mean,
- 9:31Speaker 1: these guys look like they would be athletes and other sports,
- 9:34Speaker 1: and yet they're playing golf and and the trend is
- 9:36Speaker 1: only going to continue in that direction. And uh within
- 9:39Speaker 1: the golf industry, within golf circles, um, the talk of
- 9:43Speaker 1: the ball rollback has been one that's heated up over
- 9:47Speaker 1: the last decade. And there are a lot of proponents
- 9:50Speaker 1: for rolling back to golf ball and uh making it
- 9:54Speaker 1: so that Dustin Johnson's normal three twenty yard drive would
- 9:57Speaker 1: only go let's say two eight five yards. Uh. I'm
- 10:00Speaker 1: not necessarily in that camp. I understand that camp very well.
- 10:04Speaker 1: I think that the game loses something. I mean, I
- 10:07Speaker 1: think that, uh, if you went from guys hitting home
- 10:10Speaker 1: runs in baseball all the time and all of a sudden, hey,
- 10:13Speaker 1: we don't have the juice ball anymore, and we're having
- 10:15Speaker 1: three to two games, you might lose some interest in
- 10:17Speaker 1: the game because people like seeing home runs and I
- 10:19Speaker 1: think people like seeing three entering twenty yard drives, and
- 10:22Speaker 1: I like seeing these guys being able to move it.
- 10:23Speaker 1: All of a sudden you say, hey, we're gonna scale
- 10:25Speaker 1: that back. Okay, it makes the courses less obsolete, but
- 10:31Speaker 1: it also renders the players sort of more regular Joe's
- 10:34Speaker 1: as well, and you don't have that sort of shock
- 10:37Speaker 1: and awe factor that I think we get on Sunday
- 10:40Speaker 1: afternoon's watching some of these guys being able to move it. So, uh,
- 10:43Speaker 1: that said, yeah, I think that you know, obviously advanced
- 10:47Speaker 1: analytics and showing us that uh, driving the ball um
- 10:51Speaker 1: off the tea is as important as um anything in
- 10:55Speaker 1: the game. I had dinner a couple of years ago
- 10:58Speaker 1: with Eduardo mollen Party, who has played in the Ryder Cup,
- 11:01Speaker 1: he plays regularly on the European Tour, and he is
- 11:04Speaker 1: he went to college for engineering. He's a huge proponent
- 11:07Speaker 1: of analytics within the game, and he is Uh. He's
- 11:11Speaker 1: also become very good friends and include Mark Broody, who
- 11:15Speaker 1: has has written a few books about golf analytics and
- 11:17Speaker 1: found that, uh, the old driver show put for dough
- 11:21Speaker 1: refrain isn't necessarily a truth in the game, and he's
- 11:25Speaker 1: found that the long games better. And the best thing
- 11:27Speaker 1: I've ever heard is what Eduardo Molinari said to me.
- 11:29Speaker 1: He said, look, I'm a professional golfer, and you're a
- 11:33Speaker 1: tin handicap. He said, if I gave you a choice
- 11:36Speaker 1: of three different contests, which would you rather do? He said,
- 11:38Speaker 1: one of them, let's both go to sea and see
- 11:41Speaker 1: who hits it furthest I said, well, of course, I'm
- 11:43Speaker 1: not gonna beat you. I'm never gonna hit it further
- 11:45Speaker 1: than you, no matter what I do. So okay, the
- 11:47Speaker 1: second contest, Let's put a ball down a hundred and
- 11:49Speaker 1: fifty yards out in the fairway and see who gets
- 11:52Speaker 1: this closest to the pin. Now, I said, okay, once
- 11:55Speaker 1: in a while, maybe I hit one closer if I
- 11:57Speaker 1: really hit it well, but for the most part, I'm
- 11:59Speaker 1: not gonna beat him. And then he said, now, let's
- 12:01Speaker 1: put the ball ten feet from the hole and let's
- 12:03Speaker 1: take putts and let's see you make some. I said, well,
- 12:06Speaker 1: and we just did that one. I have a chance,
- 12:08Speaker 1: at least I have an opportunity to go out there
- 12:11Speaker 1: and beat him in that. And he started, exactly, the
- 12:13Speaker 1: further you get away from the whole, the more uh
- 12:16Speaker 1: disparate the analytics show. And that's where, um, the guys
- 12:21Speaker 1: can win these golf tournaments uh by by hitting the
- 12:25Speaker 1: ball better off the tea and that's kind of what
- 12:27Speaker 1: the number showing, and I thought that was a good
- 12:29Speaker 1: way of of him putting it sort of in layman terms.
- 12:32Speaker 1: All right, that's a great segue to my next question,
- 12:37Speaker 1: because one of the pieces you're gonna have coming up
- 12:39Speaker 1: this week on Action network dot com. And by the way,
- 12:44Speaker 1: if you want to follow Jason, follow him at Jason
- 12:47Speaker 1: sobel t a N on Twitter, and if you use
- 12:52Speaker 1: the code sobel s O b e l uh, you
- 12:57Speaker 1: get off a year subscription to the Action Network Action
- 13:03Speaker 1: Network dot Com. Use the code sobol get off. Follow
- 13:07Speaker 1: him at Jason sobol t a N. So one of
- 13:10Speaker 1: the other pieces you're gonna have coming up this week, um,
- 13:15Speaker 1: you're gonna rank the field one. So taking to account
- 13:19Speaker 1: everything you just said to me, M give me a
- 13:21Speaker 1: preview of what that ranking looks like and how sort
- 13:25Speaker 1: of mid range games, short game, long range game plays
- 13:31Speaker 1: into the ranking as it relates to form and the
- 13:34Speaker 1: players at Augusta for all of them to this conversation,
- 13:38Speaker 1: I will give you my lead, Chad, which is there's
- 13:42Speaker 1: no secret formula in Augusta. I mean you can really
- 13:44Speaker 1: say there's no secret formula anywhere but you know, we
- 13:47Speaker 1: hear that driving is so important in the game. You
- 13:49Speaker 1: gotta drive it long and straight. Now just see that's
- 13:51Speaker 1: what the analytic show. And we hear that Augusta is
- 13:54Speaker 1: the second shot golf course, and so you've got to
- 13:57Speaker 1: be able to hit your irons to the green and
- 14:00Speaker 1: hit him long and high and soft obviously to hold
- 14:04Speaker 1: those uh, those firm greens. And then we also know
- 14:07Speaker 1: that shipping is important because you're not gonna hit every green,
- 14:10Speaker 1: and putting is important, and of course mental acumen and
- 14:13Speaker 1: experience are important. So what I'm getting at is there's
- 14:16Speaker 1: no magic formula, there's no one thing where you say
- 14:19Speaker 1: this is what players need to do well and that's it.
- 14:22Speaker 1: And so what I always fall back on, especially for
- 14:24Speaker 1: the Master, it is I look at the first three
- 14:27Speaker 1: months of the year, and I think we've found over
- 14:29Speaker 1: the years that the Masters has almost been a rewards
- 14:34Speaker 1: finally out the right word, maybe a celebration of those
- 14:37Speaker 1: players who have played the best over the last over
- 14:40Speaker 1: the first three months of the year. And so you
- 14:42Speaker 1: may not have predicted Sergio Garcia to when the Masters
- 14:46Speaker 1: last year, but if you went back afterwards and looked
- 14:49Speaker 1: at his record over January, February and March who have said, yeah,
- 14:53Speaker 1: he was trending in the right direction. Uh. He absolutely
- 14:56Speaker 1: did not come out of nowhere. And when doing these
- 14:58Speaker 1: fix and look players, I basically looked at the guys
- 15:01Speaker 1: who over the first three months of the year have
- 15:04Speaker 1: proven themselves to be inform and playing some good golf,
- 15:08Speaker 1: and I think those are the guys that we look at.
- 15:10Speaker 1: So it's no secret. I mean, Rory McIlroy is coming
- 15:13Speaker 1: off a victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational three weeks ago.
- 15:17Speaker 1: I can't imagine that Rory McIlroy is going to all
- 15:20Speaker 1: of a sudden be completely out of form and show
- 15:23Speaker 1: up augusta, uh like he can't hit the ball in
- 15:26Speaker 1: the fairway and can't find a green. So I think
- 15:28Speaker 1: Rory McIlroy is a very good choice. You look at
- 15:31Speaker 1: Jordan's Speed, who just had an excellent finish I believe
- 15:35Speaker 1: his best of the year at the Houston Open. I'd
- 15:37Speaker 1: say he is trending in the right direction. In fact,
- 15:39Speaker 1: he's sort of this uh interesting case in that uh.
- 15:43Speaker 1: And I've talked with him about it multiple times over
- 15:46Speaker 1: the years, and the best players in the world always
- 15:49Speaker 1: say they want to peak four times per year, of course,
- 15:51Speaker 1: for the major championships, and UH and Jordan's in February
- 15:56Speaker 1: wasn't playing his best golf, and March wasn't playing his
- 15:58Speaker 1: best golf, and everybody's critical. George's saying, why aren't you
- 16:01Speaker 1: playing your best golf? And he's sort of buying into
- 16:05Speaker 1: that criticism a little bit, but internally he's got to
- 16:07Speaker 1: tell himself, I don't want to play my best golf now.
- 16:09Speaker 1: I want to save my best golf for those major championships.
- 16:12Speaker 1: And I think he's building right into that momentum. So
- 16:15Speaker 1: he's another guy that I look at. Then I look
- 16:17Speaker 1: at some of these players who quite frankically play well
- 16:19Speaker 1: every single week. Justin Rose rarely has a poor week.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Paul Casey rarely has a poor week. Brian Harmon almost
- 16:27Speaker 1: never has a poor week. You look at some of
- 16:29Speaker 1: these players, you say, look the writings on the wall.
- 16:31Speaker 1: It's right there. These guys that don't have a bad week.
- 16:34Speaker 1: You can't expect them to all of a sudden play
- 16:36Speaker 1: poorly August National this week. Alright, so let's talk about
- 16:41Speaker 1: this for a second. UH Jordan's space tend to one,
- 16:46Speaker 1: Rory Mathelroy tender one justin Rose fourteen to one. Uh,
- 16:52Speaker 1: let's see Paul Casey five to one. Um, Tiger Wood
- 17:00Speaker 1: is twelve to one. Uh. Who do you just mentioned?
- 17:05Speaker 1: You mentioned Brian Brian Harmon, Brian Herman. I'm not seeing
- 17:14Speaker 1: eighty two one eighty two one right now, Brian Harmon.
- 17:18Speaker 1: So you basically gave me like five guys, four of
- 17:22Speaker 1: whom are pretty short odds and there's probably not a
- 17:27Speaker 1: ton of value on betting any of those guys, um
- 17:30Speaker 1: at this point. And then you gave me one guy,
- 17:32Speaker 1: Brian Harmon, where there's probably a ton of value because
- 17:35Speaker 1: there's not a lot of people coming into that Brian
- 17:37Speaker 1: Herman at eighty two one. If you look at the
- 17:40Speaker 1: middle of that, the middle of the odds line up,
- 17:44Speaker 1: you're talking about, say forty two eighty to one. Who
- 17:50Speaker 1: on that list stands out to you. I can give
- 17:53Speaker 1: you some names if you don't have it in front
- 17:55Speaker 1: of you. I don't have it in front of me,
- 17:57Speaker 1: but I'm men give you a couple of names. They're
- 17:58Speaker 1: probably sitting that profile. Uh. Patrick Cantley as the kids
- 18:01Speaker 1: that I love. He may be even a little a
- 18:04Speaker 1: little higher than one, but he is Uh, he's got
- 18:07Speaker 1: a ton of game he is. And I'm writing an
- 18:10Speaker 1: article for Lakers this week on why certain players play
- 18:14Speaker 1: well at Augusta National not necessarily what you think. And
- 18:16Speaker 1: one of the reasons I wrote about Bubba Watson is Okay,
- 18:19Speaker 1: everyone says he hits it a long way and he
- 18:21Speaker 1: can curve the ball left and right, and so that's
- 18:23Speaker 1: why he plays well as Augusta. Okay, yeah, I buy that,
- 18:25Speaker 1: but I always look at look Bubba is uh has
- 18:30Speaker 1: been self diagnosed with a d D, and Bubba loses
- 18:33Speaker 1: focus on the golf course. And when Bubba is in
- 18:35Speaker 1: a place like Phoenix, where fans are yelling at him
- 18:38Speaker 1: and they're right on top of him in the gallery ropes,
- 18:42Speaker 1: he has trouble absorbing that. He has trouble dealing with
- 18:45Speaker 1: all of those outside interferences, whereas at Augusta. First of all, uh,
- 18:49Speaker 1: those galleries are further back than they are at any
- 18:52Speaker 1: other to ornament. And secondly, uh, the people there, for
- 18:56Speaker 1: obvious reasons, are much more respectful than they are and
- 19:00Speaker 1: other week on the PGA Tour. And I think that
- 19:02Speaker 1: really plays into the fact that he's played so well
- 19:07Speaker 1: at Gusta over the years. I think it impacts how
- 19:10Speaker 1: he performs. And I look at Patrick Can't Lay, and
- 19:12Speaker 1: I say, he is a very introverted kid. He is, Uh,
- 19:17Speaker 1: he is not outgoing. He's not a guy who's gonna
- 19:19Speaker 1: play to the gallery. He's a guy who is all
- 19:21Speaker 1: about golf all the time. I played at his club
- 19:25Speaker 1: a month and a half ago in California and heard
- 19:27Speaker 1: a few stories about him, and even amongst the people
- 19:30Speaker 1: that he knows well at that club, he just gets
- 19:33Speaker 1: in a car and goes out and plays golf and
- 19:35Speaker 1: wants to play the best golf possible on a Tuesday
- 19:38Speaker 1: during off week at his home club. So, uh, that
- 19:41Speaker 1: is the most important thing to him. But I think
- 19:43Speaker 1: that environment, the August National Environment, stuts his personality really well.
- 19:48Speaker 1: So I know I'm lingering on Can't Lay a bit,
- 19:50Speaker 1: but I really think he's going to have a strong
- 19:53Speaker 1: week if you want a really deep sleeper. Just as
- 19:57Speaker 1: I was talking about Rose and Casey and Harmon being
- 20:00Speaker 1: guys that kind of show up every week. If you
- 20:02Speaker 1: look at Dylan for Telly, the South African plays primarily
- 20:06Speaker 1: on the European Tour, played at the University of Texas
- 20:09Speaker 1: with Jordan's speed, very very nice kid. I got a
- 20:13Speaker 1: chance to speak with him last year at the PGA
- 20:15Speaker 1: Championship for a while and very bright, intelligent kid. Um.
- 20:19Speaker 1: You look at his results over the past six months
- 20:22Speaker 1: and there's no off week. He hasn't just to cut
- 20:24Speaker 1: in there at all. Uh, he doesn't take a week off.
- 20:27Speaker 1: He doesn't uh, you know, kind of give up at all.
- 20:30Speaker 1: He doesn't. You know, Hey, he's in forty eight place.
- 20:33Speaker 1: There are a lot of players out there. We don't
- 20:34Speaker 1: want to believe it. There are a lot of players
- 20:35Speaker 1: having forty eighth place after the first round. You know what,
- 20:38Speaker 1: Let me just bag it tomorrow so I can get
- 20:40Speaker 1: some rest this weekend, go to the next one. And
- 20:42Speaker 1: I don't see that from Dylan for Telly. So again,
- 20:45Speaker 1: just like those other guys were maybe on a different
- 20:47Speaker 1: level than him. I think if you're looking for a safe,
- 20:50Speaker 1: low cost option, maybe in dfs of a guy to
- 20:53Speaker 1: at least make the cut and give you some value. Dylan,
- 20:56Speaker 1: for Telly, this guy that I don't see you having
- 20:57Speaker 1: a bad week alright, so can't. Lee's at a hundred
- 21:02Speaker 1: to one and for Telly. These are all from golf
- 21:06Speaker 1: odds dot com. By the way, Jeff Sherman who's the
- 21:09Speaker 1: bookmaker at the Westgate forever. He's been in the golf
- 21:13Speaker 1: longer than anybody else has. He's got a website golf
- 21:16Speaker 1: OUs dot com. You can follow him on Twitter at
- 21:18Speaker 1: golf oz. He's got for Telly at three one, He's
- 21:22Speaker 1: got can't Lee at can't Ley at a hundred one. Um,
- 21:27Speaker 1: those are interesting names. I will tell you that Josh Perry,
- 21:30Speaker 1: who's been covering golf for the Action Network as well,
- 21:33Speaker 1: does a really great job. He has written about can't
- 21:37Speaker 1: Lay three or four times this year because it seems
- 21:41Speaker 1: like he's always hanging around. Can't Ley is one of
- 21:45Speaker 1: these guys Chad who I almost said I hate the
- 21:49Speaker 1: group it like because I hate the stereotype. But sort
- 21:51Speaker 1: of millennial golf Twitter, which is a niche of a
- 21:54Speaker 1: niche of a niche, I understand. But they have sort
- 21:56Speaker 1: of taken a liking, taken a shine to Patrick can't
- 21:59Speaker 1: Lay and sort of think he's kind of the next
- 22:01Speaker 1: big thing. He's the next Justin Thomas, He's the next
- 22:05Speaker 1: maybe even Jordan's speech that he could be as good
- 22:08Speaker 1: as any of these guys. I I think he he
- 22:11Speaker 1: lacks a certain something and again it's less in his
- 22:13Speaker 1: game and more in his personality. He is so introverted
- 22:16Speaker 1: that much like Martin Khimer about five or six years ago,
- 22:21Speaker 1: who uh rose to number one in the world and
- 22:24Speaker 1: became number one and said, man, why are all these
- 22:28Speaker 1: people looking at me and taking my picture and asking
- 22:30Speaker 1: me questions all the time? I felt like Martin Khimer
- 22:33Speaker 1: was way more comfortable being the fifteenth best player in
- 22:36Speaker 1: the world instead not having to deal with all the
- 22:39Speaker 1: attention and still getting into all the tournaments that he
- 22:41Speaker 1: wanted to, and still making endorsement money, and still living
- 22:44Speaker 1: a very fine life, but not having to deal with
- 22:48Speaker 1: the glow of being in the spotlight. And I think
- 22:50Speaker 1: Patrick Cantley is very much the same way, and I
- 22:53Speaker 1: just wonder if his personality will keep him from being
- 22:56Speaker 1: as good as he could possibly be someday. Unlike a
- 23:00Speaker 1: Jordan's speech who deals with it terrifically, a Warry mclary
- 23:03Speaker 1: deals with it terrifically. Even Justin Thomas gets a little edgy,
- 23:08Speaker 1: a little bit touchy at times, but I think just
- 23:11Speaker 1: Thomas deals with it really really well, just in their personalities.
- 23:15Speaker 1: I just wonder if it's in Patrick Cantley's personality to
- 23:19Speaker 1: be a superstar someday. Well, you also touched on you're
- 23:22Speaker 1: doing this really interesting story for later in the week. Uh.
- 23:25Speaker 1: The conventional wisdom of particular players versus um sort of
- 23:30Speaker 1: what the reality is when you are at Augusta. Uh,
- 23:35Speaker 1: share a little more detail on what you're what the
- 23:38Speaker 1: reporting is showing for that story. Yeah, I'll give you
- 23:41Speaker 1: a couple of ideas. Uh. Jordan's spiece is obviously guy
- 23:45Speaker 1: who figured out Augusta really early in his career, and
- 23:48Speaker 1: that is, uh, that's pretty uncommon thing. Usually the guys
- 23:52Speaker 1: who succeeded Augusta that have played at seven or eight
- 23:54Speaker 1: or nine times and figured out the nuances and understand
- 23:58Speaker 1: the little nooks and cray needs of certain holes and
- 24:01Speaker 1: know where to hit it and where not to hit
- 24:03Speaker 1: it and configure all that stuff out after some experience
- 24:07Speaker 1: playing there. Jordan's speed figured it out right away. And
- 24:10Speaker 1: so the conventional wisdom is that Jordan's speeds, smart, his strategy,
- 24:16Speaker 1: his no how has helped him be a very good
- 24:21Speaker 1: Master's player. And I don't dispute any of that. I
- 24:23Speaker 1: think there is a lot to that, and I think
- 24:25Speaker 1: that the conventional wisdom is there because it is also
- 24:29Speaker 1: some wisdom and so that that certainly makes sense. But
- 24:33Speaker 1: I look off the course, uh you know, and I
- 24:35Speaker 1: look at we're talking some insider info here, and I
- 24:38Speaker 1: look at the fact that Jordan's figured out some other stuff,
- 24:40Speaker 1: and maybe it's the people around Jordan's beef. And most
- 24:43Speaker 1: players get one house that they don't stay in hotels
- 24:46Speaker 1: during Master's week. They get a house, but really at
- 24:48Speaker 1: one house, and I'll have the wife and kids, and
- 24:51Speaker 1: they'll have maybe the agent, maybe another player even and
- 24:54Speaker 1: just other people around. Jordan's spief and his team gets
- 24:58Speaker 1: two houses the right down on the street from each other.
- 25:00Speaker 1: There's a party house and friends and family are there,
- 25:03Speaker 1: and they've got a ping pong table in a pool
- 25:05Speaker 1: table and a big screen TV, and everybody's kind of
- 25:08Speaker 1: hanging out. And it's a great place for Jordan to
- 25:12Speaker 1: go after a round and decompress and get away from
- 25:15Speaker 1: the Gulf and not even have to think about the Masters.
- 25:18Speaker 1: But he also has this other house which is just
- 25:20Speaker 1: his and I assume maybe his fiance will be there
- 25:23Speaker 1: this year as well. But he's able to go there
- 25:26Speaker 1: and focus, whether it's before the round or after the round,
- 25:29Speaker 1: he can at least be alone. He can get away
- 25:31Speaker 1: from all those other people. I don't think a lot
- 25:34Speaker 1: of players have that, and I'm surprised that more players
- 25:37Speaker 1: haven't picked up on this and said, you know what, Okay,
- 25:39Speaker 1: I'm going to pay an extra twenty grand, thirty grand,
- 25:42Speaker 1: whatever it is to rent one more house for the week.
- 25:44Speaker 1: But if it means the difference between me finishing in
- 25:48Speaker 1: second place and finishing in seventh place, uh, that's gonna
- 25:51Speaker 1: be a huge difference in the size of the paychecks.
- 25:53Speaker 1: So it's probably going to be worth it for me.
- 25:56Speaker 1: So I don't know any other players that have picked
- 25:58Speaker 1: up on that, but uh, I think it gives Jordan's
- 26:01Speaker 1: a big advantage. I think it's hugely beneficial for him
- 26:04Speaker 1: to have those two different houses where he can go
- 26:08Speaker 1: to one and just sort of hang out with family
- 26:10Speaker 1: and friends, have a beer, decompress, just sort of get
- 26:13Speaker 1: away from the Gulf. But then when he needs to
- 26:15Speaker 1: get into focus mode, he can go back to his
- 26:18Speaker 1: house and not have everybody around, not have the TV blairing,
- 26:22Speaker 1: not have music on, and just be by himself and focus.
- 26:26Speaker 1: What are these guys just cheap? Like? It's such a
- 26:29Speaker 1: no brainer. I can't believe this is the one guy
- 26:31Speaker 1: who's figured that out, do you know what I mean?
- 26:34Speaker 1: Maybe maybe there are a couple more out there to
- 26:36Speaker 1: do it. I just haven't heard of anybody else doing
- 26:38Speaker 1: that chat, and I I'm surprised that more haven't figured
- 26:42Speaker 1: out the fact that Jordan does it and he's had
- 26:44Speaker 1: early success and maybe I should do it too. That
- 26:47Speaker 1: just warns me. All right. So we've covered the people
- 26:53Speaker 1: at the top of the odds leaderboard, We've covered the
- 26:55Speaker 1: people that could be sleepers. We've covered Tiger, We've covered form.
- 26:59Speaker 1: Do you know we have them covered in this podcast? Yet?
- 27:02Speaker 1: What's a little a little segment we call you Bet
- 27:04Speaker 1: your Life, which is you are going to tell me
- 27:08Speaker 1: the biggest risk you've ever taken and how it played out.
- 27:12Speaker 1: So tell me, Jason Sobel, new employee of the Action Network,
- 27:17Speaker 1: golf writer extraordinaire, tell me about the biggest risk you've
- 27:20Speaker 1: taken in life and how it worked out. But well,
- 27:23Speaker 1: I'm hoping today, first time on the job, isn't the
- 27:25Speaker 1: biggest risk I've ever taken. I gotta tell you went
- 27:28Speaker 1: all in on this one, buddy, and it is scary.
- 27:31Speaker 1: I've been doing it for six months, and boy is
- 27:34Speaker 1: it scary. Oh good, thanks man. It makes you feel
- 27:37Speaker 1: way better. This is the lock of the year. This
- 27:40Speaker 1: is this I'm not worried about. I mean, I don't
- 27:43Speaker 1: get a whole lot of locks in life. This one
- 27:44Speaker 1: of the locks. So, uh no, this is great. I look,
- 27:47Speaker 1: I've always sort of looked at life as kind of
- 27:49Speaker 1: a gamble anyway. I mean, everything you do. What did
- 27:52Speaker 1: you say, Hey, I want to get the steak or
- 27:54Speaker 1: the chicken. You're sort of gambling with one being better
- 27:56Speaker 1: than the other, and uh, and whatever you do in
- 27:59Speaker 1: life in part is a gamble, which I think draws
- 28:03Speaker 1: so many of us to uh betting on sports and
- 28:06Speaker 1: playing dfs and uh and all these other things, because look,
- 28:10Speaker 1: that's what we're doing every day in our lives anyway.
- 28:12Speaker 1: So I think we always play some risk. Guy, I'm
- 28:15Speaker 1: gonna tell you. I know it's probably isn't a huge risk,
- 28:17Speaker 1: but this is my favorite gambling story. I was in
- 28:21Speaker 1: Las Vegas when I was boy. I had to have
- 28:24Speaker 1: been twenty three years old, I think it was. I
- 28:27Speaker 1: think we're talking like twenty years ago. Um, and I
- 28:31Speaker 1: was in Vegas with a buddy and I'm a big
- 28:33Speaker 1: soccer guy. And then I play soccer I like soccer
- 28:36Speaker 1: a lot. I don't know a whole lot about international soccer.
- 28:39Speaker 1: I might have known a little bit more then, but
- 28:42Speaker 1: I don't know a whole lot about now. The soccer
- 28:45Speaker 1: games on, I'll found watch, but I don't know all
- 28:47Speaker 1: the players. I don't know everything's going on, but I
- 28:50Speaker 1: understand the game pretty well. I still playing on a
- 28:52Speaker 1: few different teams. So in any case, the World Cup
- 28:54Speaker 1: is going on as I'm in Las Vegas and I'm
- 28:56Speaker 1: with a buddy, and Spain has a game in the
- 29:00Speaker 1: first round, and I said, man, they're playing. They're playing Slovenia. Boy,
- 29:05Speaker 1: I've heard Slovenia's really good. A couple of these players,
- 29:08Speaker 1: I know, I think they're gonna take them. They're like, yeah,
- 29:11Speaker 1: they're they're a goal and a half underdog. Let's take
- 29:14Speaker 1: them outright to win. So like three or four hundred
- 29:16Speaker 1: bucks on it. I mean, at the time, we're you know,
- 29:19Speaker 1: starving young kids who are uh making a pittance, you know,
- 29:23Speaker 1: and trying to go go to Vegas on the cheap,
- 29:25Speaker 1: and we're like, hey, let's win some real money on
- 29:27Speaker 1: this thing. So we take uh Slovenia and we stay
- 29:32Speaker 1: up to four in the morning Vegas time and we
- 29:34Speaker 1: put this game on. We're like all fired up about
- 29:36Speaker 1: it and we're sitting there watching Spain scores two goals
- 29:39Speaker 1: in the first ten minutes. That turned to my buddy
- 29:42Speaker 1: and go, you know what, I think I've been Slovakia. Um,
- 29:50Speaker 1: so that that'll that'll teach you that, I'll teach you
- 29:53Speaker 1: do a little research. You've gotta at least know your
- 29:55Speaker 1: Slovenia's from your Slovakias. Let me tell you something that
- 29:59Speaker 1: is a really cute story, charming, touching. But if that's
- 30:04Speaker 1: the biggest risk you've ever taken in your entire life
- 30:07Speaker 1: on anything, on anything, then you need you need to
- 30:12Speaker 1: take more risks other than you know, throwing away a
- 30:15Speaker 1: brilliant career at ESPN to come join us at the
- 30:17Speaker 1: Action Network, which really that's like become cliche because I
- 30:20Speaker 1: already did it. But like, there has to be a
- 30:23Speaker 1: risk you've taken in your life where you're like, boy,
- 30:28Speaker 1: this could go either way, and I just don't know.
- 30:32Speaker 1: Now you're putting me on the spot. I thought you'd
- 30:34Speaker 1: tell you a cute little gambling story from twenty years
- 30:36Speaker 1: ago and we'd move on, and you're gonna let me,
- 30:39Speaker 1: uh let me do that. I welcome to a brother.
- 30:41Speaker 1: We don't let anybody off easy. Yeah, boy, I'm I'm
- 30:46Speaker 1: trying to think. I mean, I you know, job wise,
- 30:48Speaker 1: you know, I I think the habit of sort of
- 30:51Speaker 1: moving around a little bit. I know I've spent a
- 30:53Speaker 1: lot of time at ESPN, but I jumped to Golf
- 30:55Speaker 1: Channel and moved to Orlando, Florida, and I didn't know
- 30:58Speaker 1: anybody in the city and moved down here with my
- 31:00Speaker 1: family seven years ago, and then jump back to ESPN.
- 31:04Speaker 1: So what I said, I even though risky ventures, I
- 31:07Speaker 1: don't look at them as risk but I look at
- 31:09Speaker 1: them as opportunities. And so I don't see any of
- 31:12Speaker 1: this and saying, boy, uh, you know this is uh,
- 31:16Speaker 1: there's a big risk we're taking. It might not work out.
- 31:18Speaker 1: I said, it's a good opportunity and and and if
- 31:20Speaker 1: something doesn't work out, you just figure it out afterwards.
- 31:23Speaker 1: You know, I've never been averse to them. You know what,
- 31:26Speaker 1: that was a really good answer because I like that attitude.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Thank you, you're off the hook, Jason Silba, because you
- 31:34Speaker 1: also have to go back to work, Like I know,
- 31:36Speaker 1: you've got about eight things that I've asked you to
- 31:38Speaker 1: do for a master's week and so uh, and then
- 31:41Speaker 1: I made you do a podcast in the middle of
- 31:42Speaker 1: all of it. So welcome to the Action Network. Go
- 31:46Speaker 1: do great things. Uh. We're expecting nothing less and with
- 31:49Speaker 1: thrilled you've joined us. God, I can't be happier about it. Um,
- 31:53Speaker 1: I've got one question for you before I leave, because
- 31:55Speaker 1: this counts a lunch breaker. Do I still get half
- 31:57Speaker 1: an hour to eat after this? Now you can take
- 31:59Speaker 1: ten minutes. But while you're doing it, I think that's
- 32:04Speaker 1: gonna work. I think you should call Tiger while you're eating,
- 32:08Speaker 1: just at least text him, just get some you know,
- 32:11Speaker 1: make sure remind him of who you are, where you're going,
- 32:13Speaker 1: and what you're doing, and that you're gonna need him
- 32:14Speaker 1: at some point. You know what you joke about that
- 32:17Speaker 1: I probably need to send a text to some of
- 32:19Speaker 1: Tiger's handlers, maybe maybe not talking to himself. At least
- 32:21Speaker 1: tigers handlers can give him a head on where I
- 32:24Speaker 1: am and what I'm doing. So thank you up on that.
- 32:28Speaker 1: I know you're a kidding, but I am actually gonna
- 32:29Speaker 1: take you up on that and go do that right now.
- 32:32Speaker 1: I never kid, I only give brilliant ideas and direction.
- 32:35Speaker 1: That's all I do. Hi Man, thank you,
