- 1:18Speaker 1: ESPN dot com. Legy, I know it's not like a
- 1:22Speaker 1: huge bit of news. It's not a total shock, but
- 1:25Speaker 1: I'm a little bit surprised that he announced that Nicks
- 1:27Speaker 1: was the starter before Game three of the preseason.
- 1:31Speaker 4: Does that mean that Nicks won't play in Game three?
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think they ever intended to have whoever
- 1:38Speaker 3: the starting quarterback would be playing Game three, But he
- 1:43Speaker 3: still was sort of holding that possibility out yesterday that
- 1:48Speaker 3: you know, some starters would play, But I don't think
- 1:52Speaker 3: many will unless you know it's somebody who hasn't played
- 1:57Speaker 3: in the first two say Levi Wallace, you know who's
- 2:01Speaker 3: been hurt and just getting back into practice. Maybe a
- 2:04Speaker 3: guy like that plays Sunday, But I don't think the
- 2:09Speaker 3: home crowd, Well, we'll see Nicks, you know, maybe a
- 2:13Speaker 3: series at most, but I doubt, I doubt he will
- 2:16Speaker 3: play at this point.
- 2:17Speaker 5: Jeffrey, what do you think finally broke Sean Payton into
- 2:20Speaker 5: into making it public? Was it the annoying media asking
- 2:23Speaker 5: him every time or was it just time on on
- 2:25Speaker 5: his watch?
- 2:27Speaker 3: Well, you know I've said, uh, he essentially named bow
- 2:30Speaker 3: next to starter last week. He didn't. He just didn't
- 2:33Speaker 3: tell Nicks. I mean, uh, Knicks took all of the
- 2:38Speaker 3: important raps with the starters all week. Last week there
- 2:42Speaker 3: was no rotation, and uh that included Friday against Attackers,
- 2:47Speaker 3: you know, the practice against the Packers. So he had
- 2:49Speaker 3: really done this in you know, indeed long before he
- 2:54Speaker 3: said anything to bow Knicks, and you know, he even
- 2:57Speaker 3: kept it as lackluster possible with Nex. He didn't even
- 3:02Speaker 3: tell him til Nix is on the practice field yesterday
- 3:07Speaker 3: waiting to start practice and Peyton sort of locked up
- 3:10Speaker 3: to all three cornerbacks and told them what the deal
- 3:14Speaker 3: was and that was it, and then you know, got practice.
- 3:17Speaker 3: So I think you had already done this, you know,
- 3:21Speaker 3: sort of in front of the team, and this sort
- 3:23Speaker 3: of just made it official, you know. But he's mean,
- 3:26Speaker 3: he's leaned toward next the whole way. I mean Stidham
- 3:29Speaker 3: got pulled early in Indy after just twelve snaps so
- 3:34Speaker 3: he could get Nix in with the starters. And you know,
- 3:37Speaker 3: he's had a couple of team drills even when they
- 3:40Speaker 3: were rotating in practice, when when Stidhen sort of got
- 3:45Speaker 3: the early hook and and Nix put in, you know,
- 3:48Speaker 3: with the group in a in a two minute drill
- 3:50Speaker 3: or something. So we've seen it go this way, and
- 3:54Speaker 3: yesterday he just made.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Officials Jeff, you indicated early in camp, and I think
- 3:59Speaker 2: you were only corrected. You know, the guys in the
- 4:02Speaker 2: room know, and Sean Payton even alluded to that as well,
- 4:04Speaker 2: that the other guys, the players know that that Nicks
- 4:07Speaker 2: has been running one. They're not dumb, and they I
- 4:10Speaker 2: think that maybe is in a situation he just had
- 4:13Speaker 2: to sort of prove himself that, okay, he can handle it.
- 4:16Speaker 2: And now you make that decision.
- 4:17Speaker 4: Everybody's comfortable with it.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Everybody already knows anyway, But but you kind of had
- 4:21Speaker 2: to go through the proper steps in protocol to get
- 4:24Speaker 2: where you needed to get.
- 4:26Speaker 3: Yeah, most I think, you know, there's two ways of
- 4:29Speaker 3: doing it, really, and the Bears in it one way.
- 4:31Speaker 3: You know, they drafted Cale Williams and they told everybody
- 4:35Speaker 3: that moment he's the starting quarterback. You know, deal with it.
- 4:39Speaker 3: That was kind of how they dealt with it. Uh.
- 4:41Speaker 3: You know, Sean Payton's from the Parcels school, which is
- 4:45Speaker 3: nothing will be handed to you, uh until I'm ready
- 4:49Speaker 3: to hand it to you. And I think honestly objectively,
- 4:55Speaker 3: even from talking to people in the building, people in
- 4:58Speaker 3: the league, and I think, you know, if there was
- 5:02Speaker 3: some kind of true seerum Sean Payton would have to
- 5:05Speaker 3: admit it, but he needed at least a time between
- 5:09Speaker 3: Nix Insteadham as they went through the competition, and I
- 5:13Speaker 3: think he got that. I mean, you know, I think
- 5:15Speaker 3: Stidham sort of quote one as many days as Bo
- 5:20Speaker 3: Nicks did in practice. If that's your thing, how you gauge,
- 5:24Speaker 3: gauge it. And then Knicks played well and that against
- 5:27Speaker 3: defensive reserves in two preseason games, so you know, Peyton
- 5:31Speaker 3: had the information he needed, and I think most of
- 5:35Speaker 3: the guys in the locker room felt all along that
- 5:39Speaker 3: at some point, whether it's going to be the opener
- 5:41Speaker 3: or November, that Bo Knicks was going to be behind
- 5:45Speaker 3: center for the teams.
- 5:46Speaker 4: Jeff lakewell ESPN dot Com.
- 5:48Speaker 1: With this legging, this will be the first time that
- 5:51Speaker 1: a Broncos rookie starts in Week one of the regular
- 5:54Speaker 1: season since John Elway. How many other teams have a
- 5:58Speaker 1: forty one year gap between those.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Well, probably not many, but that's that tells you the
- 6:04Speaker 3: good fortune the Broncos uh lived in for a long time.
- 6:08Speaker 3: You know, I think locally here the the eight year
- 6:11Speaker 3: playoff drought feels like forever. But there are places in
- 6:15Speaker 3: the NFL that are like, you know, saying hold my beer.
- 6:19Speaker 3: You know you're at lway Man and you know Greasy
- 6:23Speaker 3: was a pro bowler, Jake Plumber was a pro bowler.
- 6:25Speaker 3: I mean, they've they've had some pretty a pretty good
- 6:28Speaker 3: quarterback run in the world of Karmas. So, uh yeah,
- 6:32Speaker 3: I think you know, the Broncos are a rare franchise
- 6:35Speaker 3: that you know, Bolan's run was more Super Bowl appearances
- 6:40Speaker 3: than losing seasons. So that that's why there's such adapt
- 6:44Speaker 3: between rookie starters in Week one.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Just to follow that up, how do you know that
- 6:50Speaker 1: this is official set expectation for bo Nicks? Is it
- 6:53Speaker 1: win loss? Is it touched on interception ratio? Is it
- 6:56Speaker 1: the rhythm of the offense? How do you judge this?
- 6:59Speaker 3: I judge by how the entire organization handles this. Uh
- 7:04Speaker 3: you know we've seen we've seen flame out at that
- 7:07Speaker 3: position is at an all time high. And in my
- 7:10Speaker 3: time cut in the league, I've never seen patients so
- 7:14Speaker 3: thin with quarterbacks. And you know, maybe it's the social
- 7:19Speaker 3: media where we live in. You know, the constant scrutiny
- 7:22Speaker 3: these guys debt, and you know the player can hide
- 7:26Speaker 3: from it easy you can just say I don't get
- 7:28Speaker 3: on social media, but their families are, their friends are,
- 7:33Speaker 3: everybody they know is on social media. So it's ever
- 7:37Speaker 3: being said, it's just incredible discipline to manage all of
- 7:42Speaker 3: that as a quarterback in today's weak especially a young quarterback.
- 7:47Speaker 3: So I think how the organization handles it. You know,
- 7:50Speaker 3: I wrote something for us that says, you know, they're
- 7:53Speaker 3: they're all gonna need tooise, not just bow Nicks, but
- 7:57Speaker 3: the Broncos, Sean Payton, George Peyton, the Penners. Everyone is
- 8:02Speaker 3: gonna need poise for this to work. And I'll judge
- 8:07Speaker 3: progress by what I see from everybody else around bow
- 8:10Speaker 3: Dicks as well as Bodicks.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Uh, Jeffrey.
- 8:14Speaker 5: As far as Sunday's concerned, if Bo's not gonna play,
- 8:18Speaker 5: is Sunday's gonna is Sunday's game? Could that determine the
- 8:21Speaker 5: number two guy, the backup what they do moving forward?
- 8:24Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, Nick, I'm it's gonna be the most
- 8:27Speaker 3: one of the most intriguing calls. I mean, they're my gut.
- 8:32Speaker 3: What I'm hearing. What I've been told is they'd like
- 8:36Speaker 3: to find a way to keep on three and that
- 8:38Speaker 3: would make them significantly an outlier UH in the league
- 8:44Speaker 3: these days, especially with the new practice squad rules, there
- 8:47Speaker 3: are some teams that are considering only keeping one on
- 8:51Speaker 3: the fifty three man roster because you can elevate h
- 8:56Speaker 3: that you know, your number two for the practice squad.
- 8:59Speaker 3: So they like all three. They think all three together
- 9:04Speaker 3: is good for bow Knicks two. And I think that's
- 9:08Speaker 3: some of it too, that you know, Stidham offers Knicks
- 9:12Speaker 3: a support system and that Zach Wilson offers him a
- 9:16Speaker 3: support system because of what he's been through with the Jets.
- 9:20Speaker 3: So they are they going to be able to do it.
- 9:23Speaker 3: I'm not sure yet, but they would like to keep
- 9:25Speaker 3: all three if that somehow could work in their fifty
- 9:28Speaker 3: three man.
- 9:30Speaker 2: Justin Yeah, I knew absolutely nothing about Zach. Wilson is
- 9:33Speaker 2: a guy, honestly, and I just knew what I saw
- 9:36Speaker 2: in New York. But he and stead Of both seem
- 9:38Speaker 2: like really good teammates. You know, if you're looking for
- 9:41Speaker 2: guys to help a young quarterback or to be there
- 9:43Speaker 2: or whatever the case may be, nobody doesn't seem pouting
- 9:48Speaker 2: or anything like that. That they all that quarterback room
- 9:50Speaker 2: is pretty darn good, Pretty darn close.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Yeah, mos, and they have They each have something that
- 9:56Speaker 3: bow Knicks could use. I mean, Stidham has been co
- 10:00Speaker 3: It's just as hard as you can be coached with Belichick.
- 10:03Speaker 3: He played behind Brady, he watched, you know, however you
- 10:08Speaker 3: feel about quarterbacks, either watched the best ever to do
- 10:11Speaker 3: it or one of the mount Rushmore you know guys
- 10:16Speaker 3: to do it every day. So Stidham has information very
- 10:20Speaker 3: few people have. He has lived close, you know, to
- 10:24Speaker 3: the greatest modern dynasty with the greatest quarter winning quarterback
- 10:29Speaker 3: in it, and he's been there and seen all that
- 10:32Speaker 3: up close. And Zach Wilson has been through probably the
- 10:37Speaker 3: worst kind of experience a rookie quarterback in half and
- 10:41Speaker 3: he can offer a lot of those things to bow
- 10:46Speaker 3: Knicks as well. So again, I think they each have
- 10:49Speaker 3: something to offer. They work well together, everyone says, and
- 10:53Speaker 3: you can see it, but I think they'd like all
- 10:56Speaker 3: three to be around each other for at least this
- 10:59Speaker 3: year and then next year. Maybe make the calls who
- 11:02Speaker 3: you're gonna pair with bonets moving forward.
- 11:05Speaker 1: I don't think this is unfair to say, though, like you,
- 11:07Speaker 1: when he was asked about Sean Payton was asked about
- 11:09Speaker 1: Zach Wilson the other day. What he said was, my
- 11:12Speaker 1: job is to make him millions, whether it's here or elsewhere.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I think his job is actually to make him a
- 11:17Speaker 1: good quarterback for their team.
- 11:19Speaker 4: I don't think that bodes well for Zach.
- 11:22Speaker 3: Yeah, but I mean you point out that one, and
- 11:25Speaker 3: I could point out four times yesterday when he referenced
- 11:29Speaker 3: having all three around right again. You know it's I'm
- 11:34Speaker 3: not saying they can pull it off. I'm telling you
- 11:37Speaker 3: they'd like to. They would like to have all three,
- 11:40Speaker 3: whether that really works or not in the real world,
- 11:43Speaker 3: and whether that's two in the roster, one on the
- 11:45Speaker 3: practice squad. You know, I don't you know Stinham would
- 11:49Speaker 3: be a free agent, so conceivably you could work out
- 11:51Speaker 3: some kind of Hey, we're going to release you for
- 11:53Speaker 3: a day and bring you back. You know, but you're
- 11:58Speaker 3: you're just risking he wouldn't find some better, uh somewhere else.
- 12:04Speaker 1: Jeff LAGWELDESPN dot Com with us again. Bo Nicks named
- 12:07Speaker 1: the starter officially yesterday by Sean Payton. Did you get
- 12:12Speaker 1: a chance to see Vix Putt yesterday in the program
- 12:14Speaker 1: on sixteen?
- 12:16Speaker 3: Well, you know, it was everywhere. I guess you talk
- 12:20Speaker 3: about it.
- 12:20Speaker 4: That's not my fault.
- 12:21Speaker 2: There my fault.
- 12:25Speaker 4: It was everywhere, Jeff.
- 12:26Speaker 5: People were rolling their cameras and they want they want content,
- 12:30Speaker 5: and I'm I'm a content king. That's what I do.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Yeah, it's hard to live the life, you know. I
- 12:35Speaker 3: thought you acted gracefully like you'd been there before though
- 12:38Speaker 3: I did that.
- 12:40Speaker 5: How many people, hey, Jeff, how many people walking Mother
- 12:44Speaker 5: Earth right now have rolled in a twisting, turning, spinning
- 12:48Speaker 5: sixty five foot sidewinder on sixteen during a championship week
- 12:53Speaker 5: at Castle? How many? How many people too? I'm one
- 12:58Speaker 5: of them, damn right, I'm running around the green Yeah,
- 13:01Speaker 5: I know the few.
- 13:02Speaker 3: And then I came out here to Bronka. So the.
