- 0:03Speaker 1: Let's come to Denver State Legislature and we'll talk with
- 0:06Speaker 1: Senator Linda Zamora.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Linda, two big stories there.
- 0:09Speaker 1: One of them had to do with law enforcement officers
- 0:13Speaker 1: and they just always make it harder to enforce laws.
- 0:16Speaker 2: That was the other day.
- 0:17Speaker 1: But the one a lot of people are really talking
- 0:19Speaker 1: about now, red Flag law expansion, heads to the Colorado
- 0:23Speaker 1: House after the Senate.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Approved that would have been on Tuesday.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure you were not one of those who
- 0:29Speaker 1: is approving that, but I could be wrong.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Talk to us about that red Flag law if you would.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Senator Zimora, well, good morning, thank you for having me
- 0:38Speaker 3: on the show, and I'll just let you know that
- 0:41Speaker 3: it's really hard to hear you, so hopefully I capture
- 0:43Speaker 3: your questions. But yes, we are talking about Senate Bill
- 0:48Speaker 3: twenty six zero zero four. That is Senator Sullivan's bill.
- 0:53Speaker 3: It is concerning who may petition the court order for
- 0:57Speaker 3: an ERBRO, which is an extreme risk protection order and
- 1:02Speaker 3: currently and this is another extension of one of Senator
- 1:06Speaker 3: Sullivan's bills where it allows healthcare providers if they see
- 1:13Speaker 3: a citizen who is they have a concern of the
- 1:16Speaker 3: might harm himself or others, they will file an IRPO,
- 1:21Speaker 3: and that is basically taking their weapon away. And this
- 1:26Speaker 3: bill takes it even further and it allows it broadens
- 1:32Speaker 3: the list of petitions to include K through twelve schools,
- 1:37Speaker 3: higher education institutions, and healthcare facilities. And so it's opening
- 1:43Speaker 3: up this aperture of who can file. Gee, do you
- 1:47Speaker 3: see any anything wrong with this or any issues with this?
- 1:51Speaker 1: I have to just say, you know, I use X
- 1:52Speaker 1: all the time every day, swear to God every day,
- 1:55Speaker 1: especially since Minneapolis and stuff.
- 1:57Speaker 2: I will see an ICU nurse here, a nurse over here.
- 2:00Speaker 2: There's somebody else.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Every day there is somebody who is in medicine who
- 2:03Speaker 1: is saying, well, I wouldn't treat a MEGA person if
- 2:06Speaker 1: they came in here. I wouldn't treat a Trump person
- 2:09Speaker 1: if they came in here.
- 2:10Speaker 2: She's yeah, I can see a lot of problems there.
- 2:12Speaker 1: And also it would seem to me, and I think
- 2:15Speaker 1: you had talked about this previously, it might mean that
- 2:17Speaker 1: they're going to be people who should seek help, but
- 2:20Speaker 1: they wouldn't do it because they were afraid of a
- 2:22Speaker 1: law like this.
- 2:23Speaker 3: Right, it could have a chilling effect such that if
- 2:27Speaker 3: you have someone and this happened in the military. I
- 2:29Speaker 3: don't for your listeners that don't know my background, I
- 2:32Speaker 3: served twenty five years in the Air Force, and thank.
- 2:36Speaker 2: You for that.
- 2:36Speaker 3: There's you know, there's people out there that have mental
- 2:41Speaker 3: issues and they need to seek mental health. In the
- 2:44Speaker 3: military community, we would have our security clearances.
- 2:49Speaker 1: And.
- 2:51Speaker 3: There's members that would not go and seek help for
- 2:54Speaker 3: the fear that their security clearances would be negatively impacted,
- 2:59Speaker 3: and so they would get help. And this is one
- 3:01Speaker 3: of those bills where I believe this it's very similar.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Someone needs help. However, if they think that healthcare provider
- 3:09Speaker 3: is going to take their weapon and leave them defenseless,
- 3:12Speaker 3: they won't seek help.
- 3:15Speaker 2: This I get so frustrated with this.
- 3:18Speaker 1: It's going to go over to the House and then
- 3:21Speaker 1: we'll track with some of the representatives.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Over there how that goes.
- 3:25Speaker 1: What are some of the other big things that are
- 3:27Speaker 1: working their way through the legislature, especially with you being
- 3:31Speaker 1: in the House, Senate, I mean sorry, the Colorado Senate,
- 3:35Speaker 1: and I do want to thank you for your military
- 3:37Speaker 1: service as well. What are some of the other things
- 3:39Speaker 1: that you're keeping your eye on that we should probably
- 3:41Speaker 1: have on our radar as well.
- 3:43Speaker 2: Senator Zimora.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Well, we also had yesterday. It was a bill for
- 3:51Speaker 3: it dealt with immunizations. So this is the Democrat's response
- 3:55Speaker 3: to Bobby Kennedy's with the you know, taking off some
- 4:01Speaker 3: of the vaccines off the list, and they are the
- 4:06Speaker 3: Democrats are responding with having the state pay for some
- 4:10Speaker 3: of these vaccines. So we're seeing that.
- 4:16Speaker 1: And government is never big enough for these people, do they?
- 4:22Speaker 1: I know you do, I know you know your compatriots
- 4:24Speaker 1: over in the House do as well. Certainly the people
- 4:26Speaker 1: listening to the program here today do try to live
- 4:29Speaker 1: within our means. It does not seem like the people
- 4:33Speaker 1: in the legislature, obviously, the governor, et cetera. You know,
- 4:35Speaker 1: they always think they can try to burrow into Tabor
- 4:38Speaker 1: a little bit. But when these bills are working their
- 4:40Speaker 1: way through Linda, is there any talk ever about what
- 4:44Speaker 1: the cost is going to be and how it will
- 4:46Speaker 1: be a cost onto the taxpayers that they are serving,
- 4:50Speaker 1: you are serving as well.
- 4:52Speaker 3: Well. It's stunning. And going back to SB twenty six,
- 4:57Speaker 3: there's therefore the red flag law. Senator Sullivan said that
- 5:01Speaker 3: there was no uh, there was no what do you
- 5:06Speaker 3: call it? A physcal note? So and I was researching,
- 5:10Speaker 3: and I'm thinking you are opening up the aperture of
- 5:15Speaker 3: who can file an IRVO. That means you're increasing the demand.
- 5:21Speaker 3: And I questioned this, so for the taxpayer, what does
- 5:26Speaker 3: that mean? That means you're going to increase those that
- 5:30Speaker 3: can file reports, and then you're going to have You're
- 5:35Speaker 3: going to have monetary and non monetary costs to the taxpayer,
- 5:39Speaker 3: such as increasing judicial workload and staffing, increase court appointed
- 5:45Speaker 3: defense lawyers, by the way, they said their response to
- 5:48Speaker 3: me saying, but the costs, we're going to increase it.
- 5:51Speaker 3: But it's free. It if and one of my concerns
- 5:55Speaker 3: was if someone gets falsely accused, such as I take
- 5:59Speaker 3: my tile to their first grader teacher. My child is
- 6:04Speaker 3: talking about me having a weapon, that first grade teacher
- 6:08Speaker 3: gets concerned, files an IPO on me falsely, and then
- 6:13Speaker 3: as a person who has been falsely accused, it's the
- 6:17Speaker 3: presumption of guilt. In America, we are innocent until proven guilty.
- 6:22Speaker 3: But in this case, now I have to incur all
- 6:26Speaker 3: the costs to go through court. And Senator Sullivan said,
- 6:29Speaker 3: but it's free, And I said, who pays for the defense?
- 6:33Speaker 3: They said, the state? I said, And who gives the
- 6:36Speaker 3: state the money, the taxpayer. So it's just stunning how
- 6:41Speaker 3: they think they zero it out in their logic. And
- 6:46Speaker 3: so going back to that example, for this bill, you
- 6:50Speaker 3: have an increase in court appointed defense lawyers, increase in
- 6:53Speaker 3: law enforcement time and resources because they're going to serve
- 6:56Speaker 3: the info. Then you have the gun storage and man management,
- 7:00Speaker 3: which costs money, lawsuits from the foss lid pers accused,
- 7:06Speaker 3: IPO reports, increased demand for IRPO and program administration. And
- 7:12Speaker 3: then you have compounded costs from the previous bill of
- 7:15Speaker 3: last year from SB twenty five zero zero three, and
- 7:18Speaker 3: that's where it bans certain weapons such that some people
- 7:23Speaker 3: may never ever get their their weapon back. And then
- 7:26Speaker 3: you have public education and training. Do I need to
- 7:28Speaker 3: go on? I can I know about that?
- 7:31Speaker 2: That is the thing.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I mean, I'm gonna have to go to a break
- 7:34Speaker 1: here and thank you for because you carved out time.
- 7:37Speaker 1: You're very generous to help inform your constituents and the
- 7:40Speaker 1: other folks listening here today. The list would be very
- 7:43Speaker 1: long if we started getting into all the things that democrats.
- 7:47Speaker 1: It's relentless. It seems like to me, I'll let you
- 7:49Speaker 1: get back to work. I know, you're very busy, and
- 7:51Speaker 1: we'll talk to you soon going down the road. That's
- 7:54Speaker 1: Senator linda'simor, and she does a great job, and it
- 7:56Speaker 1: didn't accentuate enough. She had been on the program previously
- 7:59Speaker 1: a couple of times, and I had accentuated her military
- 8:03Speaker 1: service at that point, and I probably should have mentioned
- 8:06Speaker 1: it before she had to bring it up herself.
- 8:08Speaker 2: That's kind of poor form on my part.
