- 0:46Speaker 1: four on a Wednesday. Here on the Sports bachel nice
- 0:49Speaker 1: E a three ESPN.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Jeff wil come in. How you doing today?
- 0:53Speaker 3: I'm great, Josh. How are you doing?
- 0:55Speaker 2: I'm doing good?
- 0:56Speaker 1: And I wanted to start with kind of the conversation
- 0:58Speaker 1: we were having before you jumped off which is about,
- 1:01Speaker 1: you know, the Eagles in their off seasons. You know,
- 1:05Speaker 1: the comment has been made that, you know, why would
- 1:08Speaker 1: the Eagles be different? Why would the Eagles you know,
- 1:11Speaker 1: have a chance to improve on last year? What makes
- 1:14Speaker 1: them different than other teams? And I thought the comment
- 1:18Speaker 1: is the one name, it's Howie Roseman. Howie Roseman has
- 1:22Speaker 1: the track record of saying, this didn't work, how can
- 1:25Speaker 1: we improve it?
- 1:26Speaker 2: This wasn't as good? What can we do better?
- 1:29Speaker 1: And I think that until he proves to not be
- 1:32Speaker 1: able to do it. I'm not saying that Hay Roseman
- 1:35Speaker 1: is an infallible jeff but I think sometimes people forget
- 1:39Speaker 1: that how We is still here, and until he is not,
- 1:42Speaker 1: we should, for lack of a better term, give him
- 1:45Speaker 1: the benefit of the doubt that if there was an
- 1:47Speaker 1: issue with the team, that him, given the power by
- 1:51Speaker 1: Jeffrey Lourie, will rectify it.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:57Speaker 4: So, I'm sorry curious just at the origin of this conversation.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Did the Eagles roster get terrible overnight or something? I mean,
- 2:05Speaker 4: they clearly their issues were not necessarily and I think
- 2:10Speaker 4: all the offensive coaching moves that they may have shown
- 2:14Speaker 4: that there their issues weren't as much personnel related as scheme.
- 2:19Speaker 4: I think related. I think it's fair to say. I mean,
- 2:21Speaker 4: you know, they got two of the best receivers in
- 2:23Speaker 4: the league, great running back, right, you know they obviously
- 2:26Speaker 4: injuries related too with the offensive line.
- 2:29Speaker 3: But if those guys are healthy, they're good players.
- 2:31Speaker 4: So yes, how he does have his work cut out
- 2:34Speaker 4: for him, and there are going to be free agents
- 2:35Speaker 4: and there's going to be changeover. But you know, I
- 2:39Speaker 4: don't I don't think from a talent standpoint that this
- 2:41Speaker 4: this team needs an injection of like four or five
- 2:46Speaker 4: you know, names that really lift them over the hump
- 2:48Speaker 4: or anything.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Well, it's the idea that people are wondering that, you know,
- 2:53Speaker 1: are the Eagles still gonna be a playoff team next year?
- 2:56Speaker 1: You know what is the new offensive coordinator going to
- 2:59Speaker 1: mean for this team? And I gotta go back to
- 3:01Speaker 1: the fact that at the end of the day, Jeff,
- 3:04Speaker 1: you and Mega coach the team. But if the team
- 3:07Speaker 1: has good or bad players, that's what matters most. And
- 3:10Speaker 1: at the end of the day, you still have very
- 3:11Speaker 1: very good players on this team. And you know, I
- 3:15Speaker 1: think that most Eagle fans they kept complaining, right anyone
- 3:19Speaker 1: but Batulo, well, guess why Batulo.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, no, I agree.
- 3:24Speaker 4: I don't think Howie's the crux of Howie's work this
- 3:29Speaker 4: offseason as far as like the difficulty of it is
- 3:33Speaker 4: going to be related to like bringing in over the
- 3:37Speaker 4: hump type players. It's going to be remaking the offense
- 3:40Speaker 4: a little bit, gonna be contracts on the defense. I mean,
- 3:43Speaker 4: a lot of it has already taken place with helping
- 3:45Speaker 4: Nick find coaches and being a part of that process,
- 3:49Speaker 4: but there have been there have been far more i'd
- 3:52Speaker 4: say difficult off seasons for Howie in the past and
- 3:57Speaker 4: probably the one coming up. I think the big question
- 3:59Speaker 4: about next year is more about does does it all
- 4:04Speaker 4: work together? And that that's sort of out.
- 4:07Speaker 3: Of how He's hand at that point, Right.
- 4:10Speaker 4: You get the players, you get the scheme, you get
- 4:12Speaker 4: the coaches, and you put them on the field and
- 4:15Speaker 4: you hope that everything and everything gels.
- 4:18Speaker 1: One of the conversations we're having earlier as well is
- 4:20Speaker 1: about the offseason. You know who's the priority, right and
- 4:23Speaker 1: you know Jillen Phillips is an interesting conversation, Jeff, because
- 4:26Speaker 1: we know he's gonna be one of the top free
- 4:28Speaker 1: agent targets for a lot of teams this offseason. You know,
- 4:31Speaker 1: he's younger than Trey Hendrick, City's younger than Joey Bosa, right,
- 4:35Speaker 1: but he also has an injury history.
- 4:36Speaker 2: We know that he likes Fic Fangil. Well, fake Fangil
- 4:40Speaker 2: might only be here for one more year.
- 4:41Speaker 1: So you know, for the Eagles, you obviously have a
- 4:45Speaker 1: guy who is going to be a onted needed player
- 4:48Speaker 1: for this team, but he's not gonna come cheap. So
- 4:52Speaker 1: for the Eagles, it's not going to be an easy decision, right, Jeff.
- 4:59Speaker 3: You know, I don't know.
- 5:00Speaker 4: I hate this out this early out making that decision
- 5:05Speaker 4: or even talking about that.
- 5:06Speaker 3: You know, a lot of those discussions they started.
- 5:09Speaker 4: The combine and if there's a work once you get
- 5:13Speaker 4: back and agents start calling around and e gauging the interests,
- 5:16Speaker 4: and you know, we could see an extension before free
- 5:19Speaker 4: agency even started, and it could be just that simple.
- 5:22Speaker 4: I want to play for the Eagles. They're giving me
- 5:23Speaker 4: the right money. You know, the market is good for
- 5:27Speaker 4: what the Eagles. I mean, these Eagles expect to pay
- 5:31Speaker 4: edge rusher's top edge rusher money. It's not like they
- 5:34Speaker 4: go out looking to take an edge rusher and think
- 5:36Speaker 4: that they can get a really really good one at
- 5:38Speaker 4: a mid market deal. You know they've they've always been
- 5:42Speaker 4: good with the market on guys at play at premium positions.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Jeff Motion joining us from the Inside the Birds podcast
- 5:49Speaker 1: Inside the Birds dot Com and his latest article over
- 5:52Speaker 1: at Philly Voice has to do with another offseason conversation point,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and that is, well, we always love to talk about
- 6:01Speaker 1: quarterbacks and another in person the national media has starred
- 6:05Speaker 1: the pot Jeff, and you wrote about it over at
- 6:08Speaker 1: Philly Voice, and I like how you wrote about this
- 6:10Speaker 1: because of the fact that it's not that the Eagles
- 6:13Speaker 1: are trying to replace Jillen Hurts. They have a history
- 6:16Speaker 1: of drafting quarterbacks and trying to find value. And I
- 6:20Speaker 1: think that's kind of where I wanted to start because
- 6:22Speaker 1: I wanted to play for you in the audience.
- 6:23Speaker 2: Remind everybody this is.
- 6:25Speaker 1: What Nick Fole said on the Season podcast about how
- 6:29Speaker 1: the Eagles have a system and methodology they've always kind
- 6:32Speaker 1: of stuck with during the Howie Roseman era.
- 6:35Speaker 5: If you look at the Eagles and they have a methodology,
- 6:38Speaker 5: Howie Roseman, Jeffrey Lourie have a methodology of why they
- 6:40Speaker 5: do things. So why did they get Jalen Hurts when
- 6:43Speaker 5: they had Carson Wentz. Well, mister Lourie loved Russell Wilson
- 6:46Speaker 5: back in the draft. That was my draft. So hey,
- 6:48Speaker 5: this guy reminds me of Russe Wilson. Let's get Jalen Hurts.
- 6:50Speaker 5: All right, Great, Tanner McKee, who's the backup?
- 6:52Speaker 3: Now?
- 6:52Speaker 5: Why did they get Tanner McKee? Who's the backup? Well,
- 6:55Speaker 5: Tanner reminded them of me. I know that for a
- 6:57Speaker 5: fact we have the same agent. You reminded them of me.
- 6:59Speaker 5: So they love Tanner. They love them in that building.
- 7:02Speaker 5: They think the world of them. We love cal Moore.
- 7:04Speaker 5: We won a Super Bowl, cal Moore. You know what,
- 7:06Speaker 5: Sean Manyon. If there was anyone out there that is
- 7:08Speaker 5: the next Calm Moore, Seawn Manion. So let's go get him.
- 7:10Speaker 5: So they're going back in the history of what's worked
- 7:13Speaker 5: for them.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Jeff, go ahead.
- 7:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 7:16Speaker 4: And I think that there's such great irony right in
- 7:19Speaker 4: the fact that Nick Foles being self aware of this,
- 7:22Speaker 4: that you know, the the Eagles missed out on Russell
- 7:25Speaker 4: Wilson that year, so they had to get Nick Foles,
- 7:27Speaker 4: who merely just won wins them their first Super Bowl title, right,
- 7:32Speaker 4: and then of all the ironies and then the years
- 7:36Speaker 4: later they wind up trying to chase Russell Wilson anyway,
- 7:38Speaker 4: But he's right, and.
- 7:39Speaker 3: I think so.
- 7:41Speaker 4: Jeremy Fowler made some statements that people around the league,
- 7:45Speaker 4: around the NFL expect the Eagles to take a quarterback
- 7:48Speaker 4: high because you know, it worked out with Jalen Hurts,
- 7:51Speaker 4: and that's it's sort of yes, that's true. And then
- 7:54Speaker 4: I guess Jeremy said something where it was also to
- 7:58Speaker 4: put a little pressure on on Jailen Hurts to take
- 8:01Speaker 4: a quarterback. But that's not as Nick pointed out well
- 8:05Speaker 4: and I tried to do in the story, that is
- 8:07Speaker 4: not why the Eagles drafted Jalen Hurts to put pressure
- 8:10Speaker 4: on Carson Wentz. It's not at all why they drafted Jillen.
- 8:14Speaker 4: Hurts had nothing to do with it. And it's revisionist history.
- 8:18Speaker 4: And I know a lot of fans like to now
- 8:20Speaker 4: say that they drafted Hurts to replace Carson Wentz because
- 8:23Speaker 4: everybody hates Wentz and they love Hurts. But that's not
- 8:27Speaker 4: how it was. It was basically this and Nick is
- 8:30Speaker 4: a big part of this, right, Josh. You know, the
- 8:33Speaker 4: Eagles have always believed in the value of a backup quarterback,
- 8:36Speaker 4: a strong backup quarterback who can win games. And Nick
- 8:39Speaker 4: Foles validated that belief right by being a backup quarterback
- 8:43Speaker 4: who won a Super Bowl for them. But guess what
- 8:46Speaker 4: he got really costly for them. And before Nick Foles,
- 8:49Speaker 4: it was Chase Daniel at seven million dollars, and then
- 8:52Speaker 4: it was Foles at I think four, but then eleven
- 8:55Speaker 4: million or nine million the next year because he was
- 8:57Speaker 4: Super Bowl MVP and he was gonna have to start game,
- 9:00Speaker 4: and it got really costly for the Eagles to invest
- 9:04Speaker 4: in backup quarterbacks. So they shifted their philosophy a little
- 9:08Speaker 4: bit in not devaluing the backup but then wanting young,
- 9:12Speaker 4: cost controlled backups, and they started to move away from
- 9:15Speaker 4: the five to six seven million dollars a year.
- 9:18Speaker 3: Even Josh McCown, who is.
- 9:19Speaker 4: Their backup at in twenty nineteen, was two million dollars.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Last year, the Eagles paid two point four.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Million for both McKee and Sam Howel combined. Okay, so
- 9:32Speaker 4: the Eagles have been drafting quarterbacks for quite a bit now,
- 9:35Speaker 4: you know. They did it with mc cord obviously McKee,
- 9:38Speaker 4: you know, because that's their core belief. They want to
- 9:41Speaker 4: have young developmental quarterbacks that they also believe in, that
- 9:45Speaker 4: they think that they like that can win step in
- 9:48Speaker 4: win games. And so if you look at this year's draft, Josh,
- 9:51Speaker 4: there's not a you might move. The Eagles might move
- 9:55Speaker 4: Tanner McKee, right and if they do, that leaves them
- 9:57Speaker 4: with no backups because.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Sam Howell's not under con tracked as a free agent.
- 10:01Speaker 4: All right, So right then and there, if you move
- 10:02Speaker 4: Tanner McKee, you're gonna need that nice young developmental backup, Okay,
- 10:06Speaker 4: and b Just like when they drafted Hurts, they reached
- 10:11Speaker 4: as far as they're grade on him, you may have
- 10:13Speaker 4: to do that this year because after Mendoza and then
- 10:16Speaker 4: you get to like the next two or three four,
- 10:18Speaker 4: there's not these guys Samson whatever, you know, Nuss Miner.
- 10:21Speaker 4: They could go anywhere on day two or day three.
- 10:24Speaker 4: So you don't want to get blindsided again like they
- 10:27Speaker 4: did with Russell Wilson. So if they took a quarterback
- 10:29Speaker 4: in round two, round three, it doesn't mean they have
- 10:32Speaker 4: him graded as such. It just means that they don't
- 10:34Speaker 4: want to lose out on a guy that they like,
- 10:36Speaker 4: and they have to draft Tom Eye.
- 10:38Speaker 1: And the other thing is Zoe you just mentioned about
- 10:40Speaker 1: there's all these different names of guys who previously were
- 10:45Speaker 1: considered high prospects, right, and then they've kind of fallen
- 10:49Speaker 1: down the interest ranking. And for a team like the Eagles,
- 10:53Speaker 1: they have the luxury of having a franchise quarterback. The
- 10:57Speaker 1: drafted guy you mentioned nus Meyer for example, a couple
- 11:00Speaker 1: of years ago he was sidered a very hot commodity.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Now he's probably a Day three pick, and for a
- 11:06Speaker 1: team of the Eagles, they can, without pressure, pick a
- 11:10Speaker 1: guy like him and say, hey, let's see what happens,
- 11:13Speaker 1: like you mentioned they did with Colin McCord.
- 11:16Speaker 4: Right, And I think the pressure has already been put
- 11:20Speaker 4: on Jailen Hurts by the organization, to be honest with you,
- 11:23Speaker 4: we don't have to wait to the draft to see
- 11:25Speaker 4: if they come up with a quarterback or not, because
- 11:27Speaker 4: they basically just said the last three years, I don't
- 11:30Speaker 4: care about the Super Bowl, the Super Bowl MVP, and
- 11:34Speaker 4: the two other playoff appearances are the five and five
- 11:36Speaker 4: year We are offense stunk, are schemes stunk, and we're
- 11:41Speaker 4: gonna completely the fall. Guys right now are gonna be
- 11:44Speaker 4: the coaches, so we there's not obviously almost all of
- 11:48Speaker 4: them are gone, and now you've got new offensive coaches
- 11:50Speaker 4: in and with that a new scheme, and I you know,
- 11:53Speaker 4: if you shoot the Eagles up with true serum, they
- 11:55Speaker 4: of course they want Jaialen Hurts to be able to
- 11:57Speaker 4: excel and flourish in that scheme. I don't even think
- 11:59Speaker 4: you have to shoot him up with see him that
- 12:01Speaker 4: that's what they want, because they're in bed with him
- 12:03Speaker 4: for years and may he's been successful and they would
- 12:06Speaker 4: love to see him transition to this new offense and
- 12:08Speaker 4: everything's great and works out, because that's that's the whole
- 12:11Speaker 4: purpose of this, right But if it doesn't, if he
- 12:15Speaker 4: doesn't take to the new offense, if we're in.
- 12:17Speaker 3: November and the Eagles are a middling team.
- 12:19Speaker 4: Or five hundred or looking kind of like last year
- 12:21Speaker 4: where you know it's a first round exit, well then
- 12:23Speaker 4: they got to figure out is it more than just
- 12:25Speaker 4: the scheme, and then they have to make decisions going forward.
- 12:28Speaker 4: But that's that's who cares who they pick in April.
- 12:31Speaker 4: That's already been the template, that's set by what they've
- 12:34Speaker 4: done this offseason.
- 12:35Speaker 1: You just mentioned something really quick that I want to
- 12:37Speaker 1: hit on, Jeff and I'm not saying that you're saying
- 12:40Speaker 1: this is going to happen, but it's a comment to
- 12:42Speaker 1: other people have made the idea that the possibility that
- 12:47Speaker 1: Jillen doesn't pick up the offense, the offense is too
- 12:49Speaker 1: complicated for him, or whatever, you know, verbiage the Hurts
- 12:53Speaker 1: haters like to put out there.
- 12:55Speaker 2: But it's not hate.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It's a legitimate scenario that maybe Jillen Hurts does have limitations.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Maybe Jillen Hurts does have certain things he's just not
- 13:04Speaker 1: you know, I I've listened to guys like Kurt Warner
- 13:06Speaker 1: talk about you know, guys processing ability, processing speed that
- 13:10Speaker 1: you know, there are certain quarterbacks they just don't have
- 13:12Speaker 1: it in them.
- 13:13Speaker 2: So it's not that Hurts. Hurts doesn't stink.
- 13:17Speaker 1: It said, maybe he's just not Patrick Mahomes what a concept.
- 13:21Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean that that's what we're going to find.
- 13:23Speaker 3: That's possible. You know, it's certainly possible.
- 13:26Speaker 4: I don't think it's it'll be a situation of the
- 13:28Speaker 4: offense itself being too complicated. If anything is supposed to
- 13:32Speaker 4: be a quarterback friendly offense, it's whether he's comfortable.
- 13:37Speaker 3: Making the throws. Seeing the guys that.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Are going to be open there and making them on
- 13:42Speaker 4: time instead of later. That the ones that are specifically
- 13:46Speaker 4: schemed to be there, right. That that to me is
- 13:49Speaker 4: more of a comfort thing than a complexity thing.
- 13:52Speaker 3: And that's a big thing. So that, I mean, that's
- 13:56Speaker 3: a make or break thing.
- 13:56Speaker 4: His comfort in being able to make those throws that
- 13:59Speaker 4: are going to be there for him. And yeah, if
- 14:01Speaker 4: he doesn't and if he regresses and it doesn't look
- 14:04Speaker 4: good and you want to make some here, we'll go
- 14:07Speaker 4: back to the Russell will compare Wilson comparison. If he
- 14:10Speaker 4: winds up being a guy who had a very you know,
- 14:13Speaker 4: a short lifespan of being a really good quarterback to
- 14:15Speaker 4: three to four years and then new offenses and downfa regression, regression,
- 14:20Speaker 4: maybe maybe that happens.
- 14:21Speaker 3: I don't know. I'm not a forecaster.
- 14:23Speaker 4: I won't slam the door on it, but I never
- 14:25Speaker 4: like to also put a lid on it, you know,
- 14:28Speaker 4: I would. I'm very I'm very curious to see Hurts
- 14:31Speaker 4: in this new offense, and I think that there are
- 14:34Speaker 4: opportunities that it could be great, as much as anybody
- 14:37Speaker 4: might say it could be a failure.
- 14:38Speaker 1: Jeff Most joining us from the inside of the Birds
- 14:40Speaker 1: podcast into the Birds dot Com his latest column over
- 14:44Speaker 1: at Philly Voice about Jillen Hurts and the Eagles quarterback
- 14:47Speaker 1: history of drafting them. You just mentioned that as a
- 14:51Speaker 1: quarterback from the offense. Can can you elaborate that? I
- 14:54Speaker 1: wasn't plan on going on as rabbit hole by the way,
- 14:56Speaker 1: this was not the plan for the segments day. But
- 14:58Speaker 1: here we are anyway, on the three ESPN. What do
- 15:02Speaker 1: you mean by quarterback friendly? Because I think a lot
- 15:05Speaker 1: of people have probably heard that phrase before and they
- 15:09Speaker 1: might not know what that actually means.
- 15:12Speaker 4: Okay, well, first of all, it's quarterback friendly because the
- 15:16Speaker 4: the genesis or the objective of this of a McVeigh
- 15:21Speaker 4: slash Shanahan slash the floor offense whatever the West Coast
- 15:24Speaker 4: offense modernized is that it uses motion. Right, it uses
- 15:31Speaker 4: play action under center play action. There are so many
- 15:35Speaker 4: great opportunities or across the middle of the field.
- 15:38Speaker 3: When you have an effective under center.
- 15:40Speaker 4: Play action game, you don't even need to run the
- 15:42Speaker 4: ball great, You just need to show that you are
- 15:45Speaker 4: under center and have the threat to run. And by
- 15:48Speaker 4: the way, you should be able to run the ball
- 15:49Speaker 4: at least pretty good. Right with Barkley and with what
- 15:52Speaker 4: you got up front, and that opens up the middle
- 15:55Speaker 4: of the field to you, you know, for both under
- 15:58Speaker 4: center and then at times and shot.
- 16:00Speaker 3: The route concepts are timing and rhythm based.
- 16:03Speaker 4: And because it exploits every blade of grass on the field,
- 16:07Speaker 4: there will be opportunities for receivers we open and get
- 16:10Speaker 4: yards after the catch that we just have not seen
- 16:14Speaker 4: from the Eagles. The only even at the height of
- 16:16Speaker 4: the Eagles offense in twenty twenty two, twenty three yards
- 16:20Speaker 4: after the catch were more like, you know, you got
- 16:22Speaker 4: aj Brown deep down the field thirty forty yards, right,
- 16:25Speaker 4: and he kept going after the catch. It wasn't because
- 16:28Speaker 4: somebody caught a pass ten yards or fifteen yards over
- 16:31Speaker 4: the middle and then turned it into a thirty or
- 16:34Speaker 4: forty yard game. But that is what the West Coast
- 16:37Speaker 4: offense does. That is what the motion, the misdirection, the
- 16:40Speaker 4: under center, the play action does because it throws defense.
- 16:44Speaker 3: We've seen.
- 16:44Speaker 4: I mean, I'm I know you asked me the question,
- 16:46Speaker 4: and I know you know the answer to but like
- 16:48Speaker 4: we see that. You watch the forty nine ers, you
- 16:50Speaker 4: watch the Rams, right, you watch the even the packers.
- 16:53Speaker 4: What deep overs, high level concepts, flood concepts, all these
- 16:57Speaker 4: different things four strongs, right, They're all different ways of
- 17:01Speaker 4: getting guys open all over the field and trying to
- 17:05Speaker 4: create space to get you yards after contact.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Yeah, that's just about you know, I don't want the
- 17:10Speaker 1: purposes of itb what you guys do. What I like
- 17:13Speaker 1: to do with N I step through. We like to
- 17:15Speaker 1: inform people, like to educate people, and like, not everyone
- 17:18Speaker 1: knows what we know, you know, not everyone is sitting around,
- 17:21Speaker 1: you know, you know, consuming the content and watching the
- 17:23Speaker 1: stuff that we are knowing. And like, for example, you
- 17:26Speaker 1: mentioned about the West Coast offense. People hear the West
- 17:30Speaker 1: Coast offense and they might think Andy Reid or they
- 17:34Speaker 1: might think Bill Walsh, you know.
- 17:36Speaker 2: But as you just said, this is a different version.
- 17:40Speaker 1: This is the McVeigh, Lafleur, Kevin O'Connell, Kyle Shanahan, not
- 17:46Speaker 1: Mike Shanahan stuff.
- 17:48Speaker 2: And there are variables from each guy.
- 17:50Speaker 1: And it seems like based on you wrote this recently
- 17:53Speaker 1: as well at Philly Voyce Manion, his perspective the new
- 17:57Speaker 1: OC is he's gathering all the things and he calls
- 18:01Speaker 1: it weaponizing it. You know, I call it just you know,
- 18:04Speaker 1: you using all the information you got to put a
- 18:07Speaker 1: quarterback in a position to be successful. And by the way,
- 18:10Speaker 1: everything you just described, we have seen Jalen do that
- 18:14Speaker 1: once before twenty nineteen Lincoln Riley, he was the runner
- 18:19Speaker 1: up for the Heisman.
- 18:21Speaker 2: That offense was built a lot on. Hey, Jalen, you
- 18:24Speaker 2: have playmakers.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Get the ball to the playmakers and let them playmake
- 18:30Speaker 1: That's why.
- 18:30Speaker 4: I said, you never want to put a lid on
- 18:33Speaker 4: what a person can do just because they haven't done
- 18:36Speaker 4: it yet.
- 18:36Speaker 3: You know, there were times last.
- 18:37Speaker 4: Year that they did try to modernize their pass offense.
- 18:42Speaker 3: The Chargers game really stood out.
- 18:44Speaker 4: That was like the first shot where you started to
- 18:46Speaker 4: see some real NFL level pass concepts. And even though
- 18:49Speaker 4: there were the turnovers, which were some of them were fluky,
- 18:53Speaker 4: there were some really.
- 18:54Speaker 3: Good throws in there. And then along the way.
- 18:56Speaker 4: Now, for whatever reason, the December came, you know to
- 18:59Speaker 4: say remember the playoffs, and it felt like the pass
- 19:02Speaker 4: offense reverted back to just hit routes and go routes.
- 19:06Speaker 3: But we've seen glimpses of it.
- 19:09Speaker 4: The question is, you know, can we see more of it?
- 19:14Speaker 1: In which I would ask, is some of what we
- 19:16Speaker 1: want to see right? To see more of it? How
- 19:19Speaker 1: much of it is the quarterback, how much of it
- 19:21Speaker 1: is the coaching staff, and how much of it is
- 19:25Speaker 1: the rest of the team. Like, I don't want to
- 19:27Speaker 1: I don't want to vacate responsibility to the fact that,
- 19:30Speaker 1: you know, there were people who have said aj Brown
- 19:32Speaker 1: did always finished routes or that. You know, the whole
- 19:35Speaker 1: incident with DeVante Smith and Jillen about this is I
- 19:38Speaker 1: thought we were doing this, and Jalen's like, no, I
- 19:40Speaker 1: thought we were doing this. And even though jillens the
- 19:42Speaker 1: responsibility for it, you know, is there a possibility that
- 19:45Speaker 1: maybe the receiver didn't always do their job on some
- 19:48Speaker 1: of these plays last year?
- 19:50Speaker 4: Well, I mean, Adam and I talk on Inside the
- 19:52Speaker 4: Birds a lot, and we thought the receivers in general
- 19:54Speaker 4: did a poor job of coming back to.
- 19:56Speaker 3: The football last year.
- 19:58Speaker 4: Obviously, the offensive line we have to fight out. You're
- 20:00Speaker 4: asking if it's coaching, That's a question we can't answer
- 20:03Speaker 4: right now. I have no idea how the offensive line
- 20:05Speaker 4: that played at such a high level for Jeff Steltlin
- 20:08Speaker 4: for so long is going to respond to the coaching
- 20:11Speaker 4: of Chris Cooper. I just don't know, none, none of
- 20:13Speaker 4: us know, right We have no idea what kind of
- 20:15Speaker 4: impact Josh Grizzard will have on the pass game concepts.
- 20:19Speaker 3: So it's never one thing will it will be that
- 20:22Speaker 3: for the public.
- 20:24Speaker 4: You know at times, you know, if they have a
- 20:26Speaker 4: bad game in October, it's going to be like the
- 20:28Speaker 4: quarterback stinks or the coaching stings one. It's usually one
- 20:30Speaker 4: or the other. Nobody ever wants to put them both together.
- 20:33Speaker 4: Or it could be like injuries or talent development wasn't there.
- 20:36Speaker 4: But I look forward to seeing I mean, if you're
- 20:39Speaker 4: just if you're at that age but you're just like
- 20:41Speaker 4: really interested in change to see what it brings about.
- 20:46Speaker 4: I think this is the off season for you because
- 20:48Speaker 4: this is going to be like what's behind door number two?
- 20:52Speaker 3: For the Eagles.
- 20:54Speaker 1: It's ironic that everyone's favorite speech from Jason Kelsey he
- 20:57Speaker 1: says it was the whole team, but yet ten years later,
- 21:01Speaker 1: nobody wants to admit that it could have been the
- 21:02Speaker 1: whole team?
- 21:04Speaker 2: Is the problem?
- 21:05Speaker 3: It really can't. Man, It's right though. I mean when
- 21:08Speaker 3: you think about.
- 21:08Speaker 4: The injuries to the offensive line, the bad play from
- 21:11Speaker 4: some guys like who weren't even hurt but just didn't
- 21:13Speaker 4: play very well, and you know the quarterback doesn't want
- 21:16Speaker 4: to run, and the wide receivers don't come back to
- 21:18Speaker 4: the ball and one of them is not catching the ball.
- 21:21Speaker 3: It really is, you know. I mean it was the
- 21:23Speaker 3: whole not the hold Arn team, because the.
- 21:25Speaker 4: Defense is pretty good and you know, but but the
- 21:28Speaker 4: things that were bad were not just because of one
- 21:30Speaker 4: thing or one person.
- 21:31Speaker 1: And I will never let go of the fact that
- 21:35Speaker 1: the Eagles almost had their quarterback killed in Week three
- 21:38Speaker 1: because they put Matt Pryor right tackle. I will never
- 21:41Speaker 1: I will never give that up because people forget that gut.
- 21:44Speaker 1: I will never forget that third quarter. I mean, Matt
- 21:48Speaker 1: Pryor was like a matador with a bull and like
- 21:52Speaker 1: Jillen Hurts, like almost died three times in the field,
- 21:55Speaker 1: and they finally.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Were like, Okay, this ain't working. Kick mat Por, get
- 21:59Speaker 2: them out of there.
- 22:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 1: And it's just like, you know, it's moments like that
- 22:02Speaker 1: that people for are so easy to forget because that
- 22:06Speaker 1: Rams game probably looks a lot different if Lane Johnson,
- 22:10Speaker 1: for example, plays the rest of that second half.
- 22:14Speaker 4: It very well could. It absolutely could. And that was
- 22:17Speaker 4: a very strange game in general. And man, the Rams,
- 22:21Speaker 4: you know, the Rams. I'll say this man, if the
- 22:24Speaker 4: Rams had even like adequate special teams, they might be Super.
- 22:28Speaker 3: Bowl champions right now.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:31Speaker 4: A lot of teams wind up kicking themselves when they
- 22:33Speaker 4: think they could have won it all and didn't. But
- 22:35Speaker 4: when you don't win it all because of your special teams,
- 22:37Speaker 4: that's gotta be that's like a double kick.
- 22:39Speaker 3: In the in the rear end.
- 22:40Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a double whammye right there. Jeff Motion from
