- 0:18Hello everyone and welcome to the After Ever
- 0:20After podcast. The show where we take a look
- 0:23at Disney sequels to truly see what life is like
- 0:25after ever after. I'm James and joining me as
- 0:30always is my co -host Andy. Hello there. How
- 0:33are you doing today Andy? I'm good. We're going
- 0:38to be doing a movie this week where someone has
- 0:42a sense of deja vu. I don't know if that's relatable
- 0:45for you at all James. Just a little bit, yeah.
- 0:48I'm not sure why. Do you want to explain what
- 0:53happened, Andy? What happened, Andy? Well, we
- 0:56did 90 minutes of recording Cinderella 3 two
- 1:01days ago. We did it nice and early this time,
- 1:04before the fireworks, because we're recording
- 1:08this for Bonfire Week, and we are about to finish.
- 1:12And I realised that my computer has crashed and
- 1:15none of it recorded. I was in the middle of saying
- 1:17something. You were, yeah. So I was just chatting,
- 1:21chatting, chatting. And then all I heard was...
- 1:24And it was so funny. And I was like, did I say
- 1:33something? Are you reacting to something in the
- 1:36film? What's happening? And then you were like...
- 1:40Yeah, it stopped recording 40 minutes in and
- 1:43I was like, no! My little greasy heart broke.
- 1:48But we've taken a couple of days break. We're
- 1:50fresh again. We're ready to come back and tackle
- 1:53this one more time. Oh, yeah. Which is quite
- 1:57apt. Like you say, deja vu. We're ready to do
- 2:00it again. Could that have something to do with
- 2:03this film? But before we get into it, it's time
- 2:07to look. uh andy's favorite segment before ever
- 2:12before it is my favorite segment because we usually
- 2:15do and we are still doing our disney sequels
- 2:19in chronological order from the originals and
- 2:21as we pass by i like to imagine the after ever
- 2:24afters a little train ride and we're passing
- 2:26by all the other films that didn't get sequels
- 2:28like so long but this time we're still at the
- 2:33same stop we're on cinderella 3 following Cinderella
- 2:362 last week. So instead of looking back at the
- 2:38films in between that didn't get a sequel, I
- 2:41just got some other ways in which Cinderella
- 2:421 continued and a few little fun facts. So the
- 2:47main one of how Cinderella continued after the
- 2:51original animation is the live -action adaptation,
- 2:54which we didn't really reference last week. We're
- 2:56saving it for this. But in 2015, Kenneth Branagh,
- 3:00as you may know, is the director of Belfast,
- 3:03Thor, another thing. He's Poirot. That's the
- 3:06one, yeah. I couldn't think of the guy's name.
- 3:09The French moustache himself. He decided to tackle
- 3:14Cinderella for Disney. It stars Lily James as
- 3:18Cinderella, or as she's called in this film,
- 3:20just Ella. They do this entire explanation behind
- 3:24the name of the sister's like, Ella's covered
- 3:27in cinder. She's like a Cinderella. It's like,
- 3:31oh, okay. Great. That pisses me off. That's really
- 3:35stupid. I hate stuff like that. It's like Han
- 3:39Solo in the Solo movie. Oh, God. Yeah. We've
- 3:44also got Cate Blanchett as Lady Tremaine. Richard
- 3:47Madden as the Prince, who's now called Prince
- 3:49Kit instead of Prince Charming. and Helena Bonham
- 3:52Carter is the fairy godmother. You've also got
- 3:54Stellan Skarsgård, Rob Brydon, Derek Jacoby,
- 3:57and Hayley Atwell filling it out, so pretty good
- 3:59cast, to be fair. Pretty good. Cate Blanchett
- 4:01is a great get. I kind of see Helena Bonham Carter
- 4:05and her as they could switch roles in that, and
- 4:09it would still work kind of thing. Like, I think
- 4:12Helena Bonham Carter would be a great Lady Tremaine
- 4:16as well, but I guess going off... All of the
- 4:19Cinderella films that we've seen now, Cate Blanchett
- 4:22has that kind of poisoned seriousness that Lady
- 4:26Tremaine kind of gives off in these films. Yeah.
- 4:29I guess you could say she's got a bit of tar
- 4:32in her personality. That's one for all you movie
- 4:39fans out there. But this is... I didn't re -watch
- 4:45it for this because I imagine we'll hit remakes
- 4:47at some point. I've never seen it. It's alright,
- 4:51you know. I say alright. I actually kind of really
- 4:54like this one. And I'm not alone. It made half
- 4:58a billion. It has 84 % on Rotten Tomatoes. With
- 5:01the caveat that this was 2015 so this was like
- 5:05before the huge boom of everything get a remake.
- 5:09So you didn't have that kind of drag on you as
- 5:12well. It was new. It was fresh. It was what the
- 5:16kids were wanting. It did do a lot, like, of
- 5:19fleshing out, like, the critiques people have.
- 5:22Like, Cinderella's more active in her film. She
- 5:25stands up to, like, the stepmother and stuff
- 5:26and, like, she meets the prince a few times before
- 5:28the dance and he has his own character arc and
- 5:31stuff like this. Wait, he says stuff before the
- 5:35dance? They let him speak without being spoken
- 5:37to as well. what's going on i remember liking
- 5:41it and lily james i think she's just absolutely
- 5:43lovely and everything she's in lily james's rendition
- 5:45of a dream is a wish your heart will make is
- 5:47really nice and uh helena bonham carter does
- 5:49the bibbidi -bobbidi -boo i can't remember if
- 5:52it's like an actual musical i have to just shove
- 5:54them in the credits to shut people up because
- 5:56it was that kind of time frame but yeah yeah
- 5:58and then uh we've also got like a slew of video
- 6:01games uh most of them are Not that interesting,
- 6:04so I'll just run through these a bit. You've
- 6:07got three games that are very similar. Cinderella's
- 6:09Dollhouse 2 and Cinderella's Castle Designer,
- 6:13which are all PC games that let little kids design
- 6:15Cinderella's little house. Oh, hell yeah. It
- 6:19was a Disney Princess game for the Game Boy Advance,
- 6:21which just ran through levels based on each Disney
- 6:24Princess at the time. So you'd do a little level
- 6:27of her movie, and then you'd have a boss battle
- 6:29at the end. Cinderella doesn't really have a
- 6:31boss battle in her movie, so it just ends with
- 6:33a dance -off with the stepsisters. That's great.
- 6:41You've got Cinderella Magic Dreams, which is
- 6:43a Game Boy Advanced adaptation of the first movie
- 6:47in 2005. There's plenty of Disney Princess games.
- 6:51A lot of them are just kind of slop, but there's
- 6:53a couple where they've actually put effort into
- 6:55the story. There was this... weird one where
- 6:57you play as a princess who has amnesia and you
- 7:00have to save the other princesses realms from
- 7:02an evil ex -princess who wants to stop anyone
- 7:04else being a princess and weird i think the weirdest
- 7:07thing for me with this one is uh you have to
- 7:10go to snow white's realm to like save it and
- 7:14then you have to go to ariel's realm etc but
- 7:16then it was describing like and then when you're
- 7:18finished you get to go to bell's realm like i
- 7:20would be so pissed off if i was one of those
- 7:22other princesses Finally, I get to see Lumiere.
- 7:27Oh, yeah, yeah. You go there. You go there. I'm
- 7:31sorry you had to come to my room. I'd be fuming.
- 7:36uh there's some other stuff including a cinderella
- 7:38free fall game in 2015 which is candy crush to
- 7:41promote the live action one she's been in kingdom
- 7:43hearts the only other thing i'm going to mention
- 7:46up top here and we're going to come back to later
- 7:48is there was a little musical a part of mine
- 7:52if you will called twice charms an original twist
- 7:54on the cinderella story which is something that
- 7:57they designed and did on disney cruise lines
- 8:00in 2005 so that'll come relevant later I've got
- 8:04you some little fun facts to cheer up the mood,
- 8:06though. Hit me up with some cinder trivia. The
- 8:11dress transformation seems one of Walt Disney...
- 8:14Sorry, it is Walt Disney's favourite piece of
- 8:16animation. I can see why. It's sick. It's so
- 8:20good. Anytime they do a little callback to it
- 8:23as well, I'm like, yeah, this is such a good
- 8:29bit of animation. I love it. It's iconic. It's
- 8:33so good. If you take out the prologue where it
- 8:36introduces Cinderella's backstories and the epilogue
- 8:39where it shows her getting married, the main
- 8:40story of Cinderella 1 just takes place over 24
- 8:42hours. Oh, yeah. This came at the point where...
- 8:46We talked about this last week. Disney were at
- 8:48the point where they'd just done six back -to
- 8:50-back package movies. Speaking of which, I said
- 8:53I'd never watch them. I've watched all but one
- 8:55now. They all suck. I don't know why I did this
- 8:57to myself. Why? But at this point, Walt Disney
- 9:02Pictures were $4 million in debt and on the verge
- 9:05of bankruptcy. So, Cinderella was like a massive
- 9:08gamble. It was $3 million to make. And the success
- 9:12of this film is pretty much the reason we still
- 9:14have Disney today. Because if this went a different
- 9:16way... the company would have just closed down.
- 9:19That's crazy. Yeah. So following this movie and
- 9:22the record sales, the music, the books and the
- 9:25merchandise, Disney then had the cash flow to
- 9:29make new productions, animated stuff, live action
- 9:32stuff, make his own distribution company, start
- 9:36doing TV work and start building Disneyland.
- 9:39This is such a weird fact. I had to include it
- 9:42because someone is a super fan just sitting working
- 9:44this out. Cinderella takes place in June. And
- 9:47they know this because in the movie, the sun
- 9:49rises slightly before 6am in France, as it would
- 9:53within a few weeks of the summer solstice. And
- 9:55at this time of year, a pumpkin would have grown
- 9:57about 20 to 40 pounds. That is... That is unbelievable.
- 10:11I hope you didn't put too much time into working
- 10:13that out. This is actually quite interesting.
- 10:15I like this a lot. So Cinderella was originally
- 10:18a French thing. One of the biggest, most iconic
- 10:22pieces of the story is the glass slippers, but
- 10:24this is actually a mistake. In the original French
- 10:28version, she has fur slippers. So the fairy godmother's
- 10:32changing all these animals into things, and one
- 10:33of the things she does is she changes these squirrels
- 10:36into slippers, which is weird and gross, and
- 10:38I don't like that. But... The word for this was
- 10:44ver, which is V -E -I -R. I'm probably pronouncing
- 10:48that wrong. And it's quite an antiquated French
- 10:50word that means animal or squirrel. So when translating
- 10:54it, the writer mistook it for a word which is
- 10:57V -E -R -R -E. So ver instead of ver. And that's
- 11:04a word for glass. So, I mean, like, glass slippers
- 11:07does sound silly. And, like, it kind of makes
- 11:10sense. But at the same time, squirrel slippers
- 11:13sound worse. They sound horrible. Yeah, I don't
- 11:17like it at all. But that's quite interesting
- 11:21that a tiny little mistake has created this huge
- 11:24iconography of a blockbuster franchise. Yeah,
- 11:28that's crazy. Would the squirrel slippers be
- 11:34sentient? Screaming and paying every step. Everything
- 11:39else is like, it's a sentient being being turned
- 11:42into another sentient being kind of thing. An
- 11:45inanimate object. It would just be like a shoe
- 11:49from Beauty and the Beast or something like that.
- 11:52Just every now and then it's like she's walking
- 11:54along and they're just like, ow, ow, ow, ow.
- 11:57I think the squirrels' names were Quentin Tarantino
- 12:01and Hideo Kojima. Shut up, that's really stupid.
- 12:10And that's all my Cinder trivia. That was a delight.
- 12:15Thank you. So normally after Before Ever Before,
- 12:19wow, that's weird to say, we would discuss the
- 12:25original film. Do you want to do a quick plot
- 12:28recap of what happens in the previous ones? Yeah.
- 12:33Well, the first one's actually quite nice, to
- 12:35be fair. It's just a very basic story. Cinderella's
- 12:38living with her stepmother and her stepsisters.
- 12:42She's abused and made to do all the work. Suddenly
- 12:44there's going to be a ball where the prince dances
- 12:46with all the women in the land to see who he
- 12:48wants to marry. And she really wants to go. Thanks
- 12:50to magic shenanigans and animals, she gets to
- 12:53go. She gets a magic dress from the Fairy Godmother.
- 12:55She has a dance with the prince. She runs away
- 12:57because her spell's going to wear off. But leaves
- 12:59the slipper. The glass slipper, not the squirrel
- 13:01slipper. And the prince sends his men out. Find
- 13:04that foot! And they find it and they get married.
- 13:07That's the first one, really, isn't it? Yeah.
- 13:10The second one takes place pretty much days after.
- 13:14the first one I think so it sees the mice and
- 13:18the fairy godmother they've moved in and they
- 13:23want another story but no one has any more stories
- 13:27about Cinderella because it happened three days
- 13:28ago so they're like we'll make our own and they
- 13:33start putting together a book and they start
- 13:35telling different stories and it's split into
- 13:37three stories you've got one which is like Cinderella's
- 13:41first big event um where she's told everything
- 13:46to do and it's cinderella she's like nah mate
- 13:50we're gonna do it this way and then everyone's
- 13:52like sick cinderella that was a great idea uh
- 13:55the second one um one of the little mice is like
- 13:58i don't like being a mouse cinderella doesn't
- 14:02pay attention to me and i can't help her and
- 14:05uh the fairy godmother's like you want to be
- 14:08a human and he's like Yeah. The way you describe
- 14:11her there, she sounds like a punchy back alley
- 14:14dealer of spells and witchcraft. Want to be a
- 14:17human? I got it all. I got transmutation. I got...
- 14:23I got a vatican era. So yeah, he turns into a
- 14:28human. He tries to help Cinderella. Doesn't work
- 14:31because he can't say... It's me. It's Jacques.
- 14:35And then he realizes being a mouse ain't so bad.
- 14:38And then the third one is the one that we liked
- 14:41the most. It's still flawed, but it is Anastasia,
- 14:46the redheaded stepsister, wants to fall in love
- 14:51because she's seeing Cinderella so happy and
- 14:54everything like that. And then she meets someone.
- 14:57She's like, oh, my God. Maybe. And then the stepmother's
- 15:00like, no. And then Cinderella's like, yeah. And
- 15:04then they have their little happy ever after
- 15:07and the stepsister gets kind of redeemed. Yay!
- 15:11And that's the end. Oh God, I hate Cinderella
- 15:142 so much. So much so that we were dreading this
- 15:19at the end of the Cinderella 2 episode. I was
- 15:21really deflated after Cinderella 2. I put off
- 15:26watching this. For quite a while. Should we get
- 15:30into it? Cinderella 3. A twist in time. Yeah.
- 15:38Oh, that's a shit name. So, Cinderella 3. I got
- 15:42a bit of facts and figures before we get into
- 15:45the nasty gritty. Let's get the facts. So Cinderella
- 15:493 released in 2007 in February. It was theatrically
- 15:54released in nine countries including the UK.
- 15:58It was directed by Frank Nissen who's worked
- 16:01as a director on a few different projects most
- 16:03notably poos heffalump movie and a storyboard
- 16:08artist on tarzan and tinkerbell and other stuff
- 16:10as well it's got four different writers on this
- 16:12one of varying experience so we have dan berenson
- 16:17who worked on sabrina the teenage witch and hannah
- 16:20montana that movie eddie gazillion who's worked
- 16:24on american dragon jake long and the walking
- 16:26dead we have margaret heldenry who worked on
- 16:30this and a single episode of Clifford the Big
- 16:33Red Dog in 2020, 13 years later. Oh, hell yeah.
- 16:39And Colleen Millier Ventimiglia, who worked exclusively
- 16:44on Cinderella 3, and then nothing. I don't know
- 16:47what happened to her. She was like, fuck yeah,
- 16:51man. This is my Citizen Kane. And then she just...
- 16:57Retired. I've said all I have to say in this
- 17:00business. Just for financials, it had a budget
- 17:02of 8 million. It topped the national DVD sales
- 17:04during the first week of release. As of now,
- 17:07it's sold over 92 million in the US alone. So
- 17:12it's made a fair bit of money. Yeah, did you
- 17:16check the box office mojo for that again? You
- 17:20know what I did? If you go on just Cinderella
- 17:233, nothing. So I went into the weekend breakdowns
- 17:27again and I went to this weekend and it has,
- 17:30I think it had like either 50 or 100 movies and
- 17:35it goes all the way down to just making like
- 17:372 ,000 in the entire week. Which is very low
- 17:40for a movie. And Cinderella's just not mentioned
- 17:42at all. So it seems like the box office data
- 17:44for this is just purged again. Why? I don't get
- 17:47it. It's so weird. The only thing I can think
- 17:50of is... Because it's not like... Because in
- 17:53America it's like a DVD one. The corporation,
- 17:56Disney, maybe just forgot to release the data.
- 17:59But I don't know if that's right. If that's how
- 18:02it works or what. It just feels weird. It's really
- 18:05strange. It must be something to do with it just
- 18:08being DVD only. I don't know. Feels wrong. Well,
- 18:13I'll be curious to see how that goes next. I
- 18:16think it's next week we're doing Return to Neverland
- 18:17and that got a theatrical release in America
- 18:19as well. So that might confirm our feeling whether
- 18:22or not it's just because of the DVD release in
- 18:24the States. We'll come back to you. Next time.
- 18:29On the most riveting plot thread of the podcast.
- 18:35It's actually a conspiracy theory. I wouldn't
- 18:39usually highlight the composer in this little
- 18:40bit, but Joel McNeely worked on this. He's worked
- 18:43on Holes, The Young Indiana Jones Adventures,
- 18:45The Orville, and he's worked on a lot of other
- 18:48Disney stuff like Tinkerbell, Return to Neverland,
- 18:50funny enough, Jungle Book 2, and Mulan 2. I thought
- 18:54it was worth calling him out because the score
- 18:55on this absolutely slaps. It's so good. It's
- 18:59really good. It fits a lot more than the last
- 19:03one. It feels like it belongs, you know what
- 19:09I mean? Where the last one felt like no shade
- 19:13to the artist, but those songs just didn't feel
- 19:18like they felt at home in the world, if you know
- 19:22what I mean. And in this, they feel like they
- 19:25fit. It feels just... perfect kind of thing i'm
- 19:29not going to comment on the artist i'm not going
- 19:32to fall into that again but um this guy this
- 19:37guy wrote the score just like the musical score
- 19:39but the the songs um that was written by two
- 19:42other guys michael wiener i actually took me
- 19:48off guard i was like wait a minute that's a word
- 19:49and alan zachary I'll specify them because they
- 19:56may also come back later in the show as well.
- 19:59We don't have them as guests, don't worry. Ooh,
- 20:01exciting. No, we don't. So that's a bit of a
- 20:04law drop, but having said all that, James, what
- 20:07did you think of Cinderella 3, A Twist in Time?
- 20:11This is a certified Disney classic. Banger. Damn.
- 20:15This film... It's so good. I agree. I won't get
- 20:22into where I put it in the ranking system just
- 20:24yet, but I definitely agree this is a fucking
- 20:27good movie. After Cinderella 2. Oh my God, this
- 20:31is unbelievable. It's so good. Everything about
- 20:35it's great. I think it's got a really nice, simple
- 20:38yet really well done plot. Yes. It's got some
- 20:45great moments in it. The acting is great. Jennifer
- 20:48Hale coming back again. She's great as Cinderella.
- 20:51Lady Tremaine is living up to her villain dream.
- 20:58Yeah. It's unbelievable. Yeah, I think all the
- 21:01characters just play really well together. I
- 21:02think this is a great film. Something that I
- 21:06really like about this that you just mentioned
- 21:08at the end, while it's on our minds, the cast
- 21:11itself, it's... basically just the first movie's
- 21:15cast they don't try and expand it or anything
- 21:17like that and it works so well and all the characters
- 21:19get fleshed out more like there's not a single
- 21:22character that comes away from this like even
- 21:24on the same level as the first one they all get
- 21:26a bit more to work with which is great cinderella
- 21:29a twist in time realistically andy i'm going
- 21:33to pose you a question uh -huh does this take
- 21:35place after cinderella 2 on paper Yes. It opens
- 21:41with a song called Perfectly Perfect, in which
- 21:43they constantly reference it's been a year since
- 21:46the first film. So on paper, this is after Cinderella
- 21:502, and very early on they go into time travel
- 21:54shenanigans, which brings it back to the end
- 21:56of the Cinderella 1. Yeah. But at the same time,
- 22:00in Perfectly Perfect, the song that opens the
- 22:02movie, Anastasia, the redhead stepsister... talks
- 22:06about how she's never been beaten by a ball,
- 22:08and how she's never found love, all of which
- 22:10happened in Cinderella 2, seemingly confirming
- 22:13that that movie's not canon now, or just never
- 22:17happened? Like, the mice made it up? They just
- 22:19made some stupid stories up and lied? Yeah, I
- 22:22mean, do you know what? That makes more sense.
- 22:25That makes so much more sense, and that's, yeah,
- 22:28the mice made up a load of stories and shoved
- 22:31it in a book for Cinderella, and that's all...
- 22:34Cinderella 2 is and we can ignore it this takes
- 22:37place after the first one that's it it explains
- 22:41the dog shit writing as well doesn't it like
- 22:43yeah brain dead mouse written by mice the first
- 22:47ever film written by mice and it shows A twist
- 22:51in time. We start on Cinderella and the fairy
- 22:55godmother sort of dicking about, talking about
- 22:58how everything's perfectly perfect. And then
- 23:01Anastasia kind of finds a way in and she's talking
- 23:04about how, like Andy said before, she's never
- 23:08been in love. She's never been invited to a ball,
- 23:11all of that. And she's like, how the fuck did
- 23:14Cinderella do it? All singing, of course. And
- 23:18then... Fairy Godmother whips out a magic wand.
- 23:21So she sees the magic wand and she's like, oh
- 23:23my God, Cinderella used magic. And then clumsy
- 23:27Fairy Godmother just fucking yeets the magic
- 23:30wand right over to where Anastasia is. And she
- 23:34grabs it, she runs off and she shows it to Lady
- 23:36Tremaine. She's like, oh my God, it was magic.
- 23:38That's how Cinderella did it. And Lady Tremaine
- 23:41unleashes her evil. um like her pure evil for
- 23:47the first time kind of thing she's got power
- 23:50and she uh firstly the other stepsister sees
- 23:55that it's a stick and then she goes let's beat
- 23:59her with it which was really funny so lady tremaine
- 24:03casts some magic bippity boppity boo and reverses
- 24:06time to a year ago um the mourning of the duke
- 24:12coming to try the slipper on a load of people
- 24:15instead of cinderella coming down lady tremaine
- 24:19makes the glass slipper bigger and it fits on
- 24:22anastasia's foot time has changed and now anastasia's
- 24:28off to the castle instead of cinderella do you
- 24:31know what it is what it's like flashpoint but
- 24:33with lady oh my god yeah yeah fair enough anyone
- 24:45not familiar Flash points the story from the
- 24:47DC comics where Flash goes back in time to save
- 24:50his mother and there's a new timeline and we
- 24:52pretty much get that here except instead of saving
- 24:54the mother they put a slipper on Anastasia's
- 24:56foot yeah by making the glass slipper way bigger
- 25:00yeah so the entire story then just follows Lady
- 25:04Tremaine trying to secure the power and Cinderella
- 25:06trying to She's not trying to undo the time travel,
- 25:08per se. She's trying to, like, win the prince
- 25:10over, isn't she? Yeah, she's just trying to fall
- 25:13in love with the prince. Yeah. Or make the prince
- 25:16realise that it was her that they went to the
- 25:18dance with. Yeah. I think we have just said this,
- 25:21but it's worth saying again. I love the plot
- 25:23of this. I thought, like, what a fun premise
- 25:25for a movie. Genuinely, I did not expect it to
- 25:28go this way at all. No. It's kind of, in a way,
- 25:32like... obviously it's lovely it's a cinderella
- 25:34film but it's kind of dark as well and yeah there's
- 25:38the part that i think you mentioned where time
- 25:42is going backwards yes yeah and do you want to
- 25:46explain it yeah that that sequence that you mentioned
- 25:49where tremaine's like unleashing power is like
- 25:51nuts because they the animation this is beautiful
- 25:54by the way it's got that same it's so good it's
- 25:57got the same pitfalls of the budget and it's
- 25:59digital art and digital ink but the animators
- 26:01really put a lot of effort into making this look
- 26:03amazing and that spell is like no exception because
- 26:06instead of like reusing footage from the first
- 26:09film which would have been cheaper and easier
- 26:12they reanimate the scenes and have it it's almost
- 26:15like an unseen forces ripping cinderella and
- 26:18the prince away from each other like they're
- 26:19clutching on and being dragged away and it's
- 26:22It's like a bit heart -wrenching and Jermaine's
- 26:25got this horrible, evil grin on her face. Yeah,
- 26:28Andy sent me a picture of just her grin the other
- 26:31day while he was watching it. And it's so evil.
- 26:36Yeah. And let's just say it, she steps it up
- 26:40in this one. She is pure evil, man. She's horrible.
- 26:46Because I think we both mentioned for two, because
- 26:48she's barely in that one. But she's more of just,
- 26:50like, a fuddy -duddy. Like, even when you were
- 26:52recapping it there, it's just, like, she says,
- 26:54don't you date that guy. But, like, in this one,
- 26:56she's malicious. She's a cold -hearted bitch.
- 27:00She's horrible. And she's animated like that
- 27:03again as well. She gets all the shadows and the
- 27:05coldness in her face and stuff like that that
- 27:08the 50s one had. Yeah, I think I mentioned that
- 27:11it was, like, slightly film noir. And it's the
- 27:14same thing. It's like, oh, it's just so well,
- 27:17like, proper villain. shadows and oh man lady
- 27:21tremaine take your place in that video game of
- 27:25disney villains the dumbo ringmaster can fuck
- 27:28off you know what actually while we're on the
- 27:30topic there i watched dumbo recently And Dumbo,
- 27:34at the end of the movie, goes back and works
- 27:35for the ringmaster. So he shouldn't be in that
- 27:38video game. Get him out! What the? Yeah, put
- 27:40Lady... Right, we're starting a petition to put
- 27:43Lady Tremaine in this game from 1999. Just the
- 27:47premise of this movie as well shows how evil
- 27:50she is. Like, she has unlimited power in front
- 27:53of her. And she could very easily just be like,
- 27:54I wish we were rich. I wish we were powerful.
- 27:56Yeah. But she specifically wants to undo Cinderella
- 28:00being happy. Which is just so cruel. And she
- 28:04does it by going, bippity -boppity -boop. She
- 28:08says it with such malice, though. Scared me.
- 28:12She's great in this one. The lady playing her,
- 28:16we didn't mention her last week because she didn't
- 28:17really do anything, but it's Suzanne Blakesley,
- 28:19who's actually done a lot of... villains uh for
- 28:24Disney recently she's done like Maleficent and
- 28:26Cruella de Vil and the Evil Queen um after the
- 28:29original voice actors have moved on and she's
- 28:32also funnily enough also Wanda from Fairly Oddparents.
- 28:35Which is crazy to me. Those voices don't line
- 28:39up, but it just shows how good of a voice actor
- 28:42she is, that she can be so whimsical and lovely
- 28:45in Fairly Oddparents, and then this absolutely
- 28:48stern, horrible, nasty piece of work. It's crazy.
- 28:54She's great. I love it. Did you know that her
- 28:56first film was Cinderella 2? No, I didn't. That's
- 28:59mad. Like she'd done some stuff in animated shows
- 29:03before, but... yeah that was her first film i
- 29:06mean it sucks to be that one because like imagine
- 29:09this was the the starter that would be sick yeah
- 29:12i was gonna say at least it led out of this while
- 29:15we're here it's worth saying we both really like
- 29:17this film there's some twists and turns in this
- 29:19which i'm not gonna say you don't see coming
- 29:21but it goes further than i think you'd expect
- 29:23it to in some bits a hundred percent yeah it's
- 29:26worth watching this like for yourself um we'll
- 29:29probably try and like Slowly move through the
- 29:31plot so you can listen to more, but we would
- 29:34both recommend you watch this. Don't watch Cinderella
- 29:362. Just watch Cinderella 1, then watch this one.
- 29:40There's no point in watching Cinderella 2. I
- 29:42would say from now on, we're probably going to
- 29:46go into spoiler territory. So if you haven't
- 29:48seen it yet, now's your time. go watch it yeah
- 29:52go away if you want to watch it but one thing
- 29:55i mentioned it isn't really a spoiler but the
- 29:57songs like this kicks off with a song which was
- 30:00very reassuring for me because it's not just
- 30:02a song it's a musical song it's yeah it's diegetic
- 30:06the characters are actually singing it's not
- 30:08like a pop song laid over a montage of different
- 30:11characters doing different bits they've actually
- 30:13written songs for this and it was uh really refreshing
- 30:15yeah they're really good as well there's one
- 30:18a bit later on that i was i think i said to you
- 30:22i wouldn't normally like a song like that and
- 30:24i loved it i thought is that when the mice sing
- 30:26yes yeah i love that one we'll get to that in
- 30:29a bit but yeah the songs are great the music
- 30:33is fantastic it fits like i say it just feels
- 30:37like it belongs there kind of thing absolutely
- 30:41and it really helps sell the idea that this is
- 30:44a continuation of the first one because nothing's
- 30:46more jarring than like you're basically almost
- 30:48changing genre when you do that like it's no
- 30:51longer really a musical it's just a movie that
- 30:53has music in um and this is back to music yeah
- 30:57it turns into like a music video which is what
- 30:59like those parts where the pop song kind of things
- 31:02come in yeah cinderella too It feels like that
- 31:06kind of thing. But I did like the work with Cinderella
- 31:09at the beginning. And by the way, when she escapes
- 31:11the room in the original one, it's the dog that
- 31:13helps her out. The dog vanishes in this one.
- 31:16He's nowhere to be seen. Yeah, dog is nowhere
- 31:18to be seen. Poor Bruno. We don't talk about Bruno.
- 31:24That was very good. Flashpoint erases Brunner,
- 31:30I guess. But when Cinderella comes downstairs
- 31:33and she's got that confusion of like, what the
- 31:36hell? It was me. There's a bit where Tremaine
- 31:40and the sisters leave with the royal duke and
- 31:42whatever. They're like, princesses now. And you
- 31:45see a shot of Cinderella just looking at them
- 31:48as they go. And then it cuts to a shot of her
- 31:50from behind as she closes the door really slowly.
- 31:53And you don't even see her face in that second
- 31:55one. yeah yeah so heartbreaking it's it's the
- 31:59bit from the first movie where she's crying like
- 32:01times 10 it's just like that was her upset and
- 32:05then this is her just shattered like absolutely
- 32:07broken And it was horrible. Broken like the glass
- 32:11slipper that Lady Tremaine dropped on the floor.
- 32:14Yeah. There's no scapegoat this time. She can't
- 32:17go up and be like, oh, I've got the glass slipper.
- 32:20Lady Tremaine has taken that from her as well.
- 32:23Yeah. Brutal. And she has a really great song
- 32:26there as well. The song was like, she's almost
- 32:29like guessing, isn't she? Like of like, did that
- 32:32actually happen? Like, did I imagine that? Because
- 32:36I'm so mentally broken. good song which is called
- 32:39was it is it more than a dream yes more than
- 32:43a dream yeah great that's not how it goes at
- 32:47all no i don't i think the songs are good in
- 32:51the moment as well uh and you might not necessarily
- 32:53be tapping your toes later and remembering them
- 32:55but when you're watching the film it works and
- 32:57um considering like you know it's a different
- 33:00level to the original one and i'm fine with that
- 33:02like if one watching the movie they're good then
- 33:05so be it like i don't need to remember every
- 33:07song i would still listen to them i think i'd
- 33:09pop this uh soundtrack on it's a banger it's
- 33:12also only like 16 minutes long so like but as
- 33:15we mentioned earlier like it brings all the original
- 33:17characters back and that's like your main characters
- 33:20so like when we jump to the palace we get like
- 33:22the prince and um i remember you saying it was
- 33:25um the prince has like a lot more to do like
- 33:27i remember you highlighting like Even just something
- 33:30as simple as, like, he's fencing and he's doing,
- 33:33like, athletic stuff and stuff. It's like, he
- 33:34has an interest now. That's cool. And it may
- 33:36play a note later. Little bits that just make
- 33:39the characters feel more alive than they were.
- 33:41Absolutely, yeah. He, like, him and his dad train
- 33:45in this, like, gymnastics gym. It's the Iron
- 33:49Paradise. Yeah, exactly. It's, you know, the
- 33:52rocks in the corner promoting energy drinks.
- 33:55And, yeah, he's like... going off the pommel
- 33:58horse and then swinging around on some ropes
- 34:01and stuff like that. And it's good. So yeah,
- 34:03the story takes us into the castle. We see a
- 34:05little bit of what the prince and the king are
- 34:07doing. You know, the king's really happy that,
- 34:10oh, you're going to get married. She's here.
- 34:12She's on the way. You excited? The duke lets
- 34:16the Lady Tremaine and the stepsisters in. And
- 34:22the prince walks into the room and is like, oh!
- 34:25i think i got the wrong room like straight away
- 34:29he knows oh this isn't cinderella this isn't
- 34:32who i dance with at the ball it's actually such
- 34:36a like like it's it's never mean about it but
- 34:38it does kind of like prod a little fun at the
- 34:40original one where it's like what would the stepsisters
- 34:43plan when they get there if their foot fit like
- 34:45He remembers who he did. It was last night. He
- 34:48remembers. He can remember a face. He's not,
- 34:51like, face -blind or anything like that. He's
- 34:53going to look and be like, you have red hair,
- 34:57she had blonde hair. Instantly, yeah. And they
- 35:01even make a point with the slipper. They're like,
- 35:03how many people's shoe size do you think are,
- 35:05like, four and a half or whatever? Like, there's
- 35:08loads of people in this kingdom. Of course there's
- 35:10going to be people with... So they take the piss
- 35:12out of the... kind of plot holes of the original
- 35:15which is really fun but yeah so oh no lady tremaine's
- 35:19plan is out the window oh no what's that it's
- 35:22the wand oh bippity boppity boo forget cinderella
- 35:26and remember that you were dancing with anastasia
- 35:29now the prince turns around and he's like mate
- 35:33it was you sick so yeah i think like the second
- 35:36act a lot of it's like in the castle there's
- 35:38a lot of like to and fro of like that that germaine's
- 35:41trying to like keep the spell under control and
- 35:42cinderella's trying to infiltrate and stuff funny
- 35:45enough when cinderella gets there we uh introduced
- 35:48to a character from the second one weirdly making
- 35:50it like is it canon then oh what like uh prudence
- 35:55the castle manager i don't understand it's so
- 35:58strange and like i did actually look this up
- 36:01and the director was saying stuff like uh we
- 36:03want to do our own thing But we wanted to honour,
- 36:06like, if any of the kids or the fans had watched,
- 36:08like, the second one. We kind of wanted to honour
- 36:09them, so we put some bits in. It's like, yeah,
- 36:11that's fine, but, like, it's more confusing now
- 36:14than anything. Oh, it just, oh, it's so weird.
- 36:17Admit it was a failure and just call this one
- 36:19Cinderella 2 instead. You cowards. You fucking
- 36:22cowards. And you'd actually... benefit more from
- 36:26not having seen the second one because if you
- 36:28haven't seen the second one it's just there's
- 36:29a snippety woman you don't think anything of
- 36:31it whereas because we endured that film we're
- 36:33like what so yeah we get um a fun moment where
- 36:37cinderella cinderella introduces herself as a
- 36:41rat catcher or a mouse catcher she's traveling
- 36:46with jacques and gus gus that they're all going
- 36:49into the castle together. The two mice are, like,
- 36:53helping her out. She says, I'm the royal mouse
- 36:55catcher. Gus turns around and is like, what the
- 36:57fuck? And then as... Traitor! Yeah! As this lady
- 37:03is looking away, Cinderella, like, it feels so
- 37:07natural. She, like, peeks behind them at the
- 37:10mice and is like, no, no, no, no, no, no. Yeah,
- 37:12does, like, the neck cut thing. Yeah, she does
- 37:15the neck cut. She's like, you're dead, mouse.
- 37:20What is it called? Where you, like, shake your
- 37:21hand in front of your neck as in, like, no, no,
- 37:23no, no, no. Like, just like a no. Not a neck,
- 37:26like, dragged it across the neck, like, I'm gonna
- 37:29slit your throat, cuz. Flashpoint changes a lot
- 37:33of things. It really does. I really like that.
- 37:36It's also just really nice that she'd take time
- 37:39and just reassure these mice. Yeah, exactly.
- 37:42She, like, she just makes, and that's who Cinderella
- 37:45is, and we didn't really get that in the second
- 37:47one. like she had her moments of being nice and
- 37:50all of that but in this she's caring she's lovely
- 37:54and that's what cinderella is she's just a nice
- 37:58person yeah and um she's not really a main character
- 38:02in the second one but this is her movie again
- 38:05and uh it gives you a lot more time with her
- 38:07and like i said at the beginning every character
- 38:10gets more development and One of the things I
- 38:13like that Cinderella's doing here is a lot of
- 38:15the time she's standing up for herself. Like,
- 38:16I don't think the one we got in the first movie
- 38:18necessarily would have gone to the castle even
- 38:21to begin with. I think she might have just been
- 38:23like, that sucks. Whereas this one, she's a bit
- 38:26more like backboned, I guess. Yeah, she can stand
- 38:29up for herself. She's a lot more willing and
- 38:32able to fight in her corner for herself and for
- 38:36her friends. Also, you say that... She wasn't
- 38:39the main character in the second. She wasn't
- 38:41the main character in the first either. That's
- 38:43true. This is the first film with the most, like,
- 38:47so much Cinderella stuff. It's great. Who would
- 38:51have known that if you take out the stupid mice
- 38:56from the first one and just focus on Cinderella,
- 39:00it would be a good film. But that's what we've
- 39:02got here. Number three. It's all about Cinderella
- 39:05and it's good. And I actually think if you looked
- 39:08at the first episode we did and then this one,
- 39:10our attitudes to Jacques and Gus the mice, it
- 39:13is cut down to just these two in this one, which
- 39:15makes it a bit easier to follow. We don't dislike
- 39:18the mice. I think in the first one, we were oversaturated
- 39:20with them. But in this one, they're used really
- 39:23well and their bits are funny, but they don't
- 39:26overstay their welcome. They don't take away
- 39:27from the plot. They enhance it instead and help
- 39:30drive us forward. It's much better. Yeah, they're
- 39:32used incredibly well. Cinderella's managed to
- 39:35sneak in. She's solid snaked away all the way
- 39:38to the top and she gets to this balcony. And
- 39:40there he is. It's Prince Charming. Oh, my love.
- 39:44How lovely. He's so handsome and he's got a beautiful
- 39:47voice. The voice of a Spider -Man. It's still
- 39:50him. A radioactive Spider -Man. Love his voice.
- 39:56He's great. He's really good in this one as well.
- 39:58He gets a lot more to say, which is great. Yeah.
- 40:02Yeah, he's good. He matches really well with...
- 40:05jennifer hale as well i think they have a good
- 40:07like back and forth when they do talk they do
- 40:10yeah we mentioned last time they worked together
- 40:12on spidey as well oh yeah who was she she was
- 40:15black cat who before she was black cat she was
- 40:17like felicia hardy who was like a stand -in for
- 40:19gwen as well so they get like a lot of play together
- 40:21that's fun he's great she's great they're great
- 40:24so yeah they're on this balcony and uh she comes
- 40:28up and she's like do you remember me and he's
- 40:31like no and then so they're chatting and he's
- 40:36like we found the glass slipper lady i'm gonna
- 40:38i'm gonna marry her tonight and then he's like
- 40:40yeah who could forget someone like anastasia
- 40:44and then cinderella's like you fucking what mate
- 40:50And then the lady from the second one comes along
- 40:52and is like, ah, royal mouse catcher, fuck off.
- 40:55And they take her away. And just as they're being
- 40:58taken away, Cinderella like sticks her arm out.
- 41:01She's like, no, it's me. You have to remember
- 41:04me. And they kind of touch hands for a second.
- 41:06And you can see something in the prince's eyes.
- 41:09He's like, what was that? Ah, well, whatever.
- 41:12Yeah. And they walk away and they part ways for
- 41:14a little bit. It's not like it's... literally
- 41:16breaking the spell but it's like it's like a
- 41:18memory coming to the forefront yeah because we
- 41:20get a bit with the dad as well don't we where
- 41:22his dad's talking to anastasia in a fairly nice
- 41:26moment to be fair after she's made a goddamn
- 41:28fool of herself dancing um because yeah i love
- 41:32this touch because the glass slip is too big
- 41:34and she's too clumsy she's walking with just
- 41:37the one slipper on and you can just hear like
- 41:42every time she's making steps like a goddamn
- 41:44knight boots on one of her feet so she has a
- 41:46bit of a disaster dancing with that on and she's
- 41:49clumsy but she has this nice bit with the king
- 41:51who also goes like I had a wife and I touched
- 41:53her hand and I loved her there's more in depth
- 41:55than that yeah there's like a really a really
- 42:00nice part that you're skipping over he met his
- 42:02wife and they reached for the same seashell and
- 42:05their hands touched and that's when he realized
- 42:08he loved her and she's passed away now but he's
- 42:10always kept the seashell which he wants to give
- 42:11to anastasia and it's like a really touching
- 42:14moment where you see like oh i guess we're gonna
- 42:15get like more anastasia redemption maybe because
- 42:18you can see her starting to realize like this
- 42:20is nice and i like that these people are treating
- 42:22me nice even though i made a fool of myself like
- 42:24she's probably been used to a mother just being
- 42:26like you made a fool of yourself now go lick
- 42:27dirt off the floor yeah yeah so it starts to
- 42:31culminate together cinderella catches up to uh
- 42:33the stepmother the stepsisters uh something i
- 42:37really like in this one as well the stepsisters
- 42:39we've got anastasia who's the redhead one she's
- 42:41getting a bit more development and this is gonna
- 42:44sound almost like a backhanded compliment but
- 42:46i do kind of really like that the other step
- 42:48sister drizella isn't really getting any development
- 42:51but instead she's just turning into a right little
- 42:53brother of a villain she's so funny in this there's
- 42:57certain sections that she does like stupid little
- 43:01bits or whatever like when she says oh yeah a
- 43:05stick let's beat her with it she's just so irredeemably
- 43:09mean i love her and i love that uh she's always
- 43:13mean to like anastasia as well like that's she's
- 43:16on your side like there's a line at some point
- 43:18where they say like anastasia needs to get a
- 43:20beauty sleep tonight and she's like is that gonna
- 43:22be enough time the voice actor on her as well
- 43:27is so good So sassy and horrible. There is a
- 43:34fun little thing with the voice actors as well.
- 43:36So Drizella is played by Russie Taylor, who's
- 43:39passed away now, unfortunately. And she played
- 43:42Minnie Mouse. Did she? Yeah. And Anastasia is
- 43:47played by Tress McNeil, who played Daisy Duck.
- 43:50Oh my God, that's so cute. What a nice little
- 43:53crossover. Yeah. Yeah, they're both, like, really
- 43:57good in this role. Oh, while we're just on this
- 44:00little, like, thing, Russie Taylor, the Minnie
- 44:02Mouse lady, she married the Mickey Mouse actor.
- 44:06No way! It's so sweet. Oh, that's lovely. I really
- 44:10like that. So we catch up to Gisella and Tremaine
- 44:13just being horrible, snidey, nasty people, and
- 44:16Cinderella realises that they're... Are they
- 44:18Mice Teller? I can't remember. They see the prince
- 44:21get hypnotized. Yeah, Cinderella gets upset,
- 44:24but she has like a little conference call. So
- 44:26she's on her Metal Gear Solid mission and she
- 44:28goes into the call with Gus's Otacon. Cinderella,
- 44:32did you know Lady Tremaine has a powerful wand?
- 44:34What do you mean a powerful wand? It's more powerful
- 44:38than Metal Gear. Metal Gear. So they decide as
- 44:46a little team to go steal the wand. The mice
- 44:48go in to steal the key to unlock the drawer in
- 44:51which Lady Tremaine's hid the wand. She's had
- 44:53to hide the wand because Drizella uses it to
- 44:55change her outfit like she's in Fortnite constantly.
- 44:57Oh, God, that's so funny. I don't know if it's
- 45:04this bit or later, but just as a little side
- 45:05note, there's a bit where... Tremaine goes to
- 45:08comb Drizella's hair and she combs up with such
- 45:11force and fury that it drags the face model of
- 45:14Drizella off of her head. It's like stretching
- 45:17up with the hair. It's horrible. She changes
- 45:20her back after she's done her Fortnite costume
- 45:23change, but purposefully makes her hair like
- 45:27proper frizzy. So then she has to comb it. So
- 45:31she's done that intentionally just so she could
- 45:33hurt Drizella. She's so mean. Ruthless. She's
- 45:36so mean. This leads into a really weirdly tense
- 45:40bit which I didn't expect in a Cinderella 3 movie
- 45:42where Cinderella eventually following the chaos
- 45:45that the mice cause and stealing the key she
- 45:48goes in and pretends to be a housemaid to clean
- 45:50up and you can see Tremaine like stalking her
- 45:53a bit and like following her eyeing her up and
- 45:56there's this horrible shot where Cinderella's
- 45:58scrubbing the floor and there's like a bucket
- 45:59of water and Tremaine's in the middle of saying
- 46:01something like we wouldn't want this to happen
- 46:03and you see her just a silhouette appear in the
- 46:05water bucket and she's like isn't that right
- 46:08Cinderella it's done with such like such flair
- 46:15as well it's so sick it feels like horrible i
- 46:20was like oh my god get out of there when she
- 46:23gets caught something i really like because again
- 46:25jumping back to two we criticize there's a bit
- 46:27where anastasia gets caught dating the baker
- 46:29by the mother cinderella's like hiding behind
- 46:31the corner like oh no but doesn't do anything
- 46:34it's like come on man do something yeah in this
- 46:37one tremaine catches her and she just does she's
- 46:40just like I'm not going to let you get away with
- 46:42this and all this stuff. And it sounds so basic
- 46:44and stupid. I know how this sounds saying it,
- 46:46but like compared to what we got before, that's
- 46:48like such a big step forward for the characters.
- 46:51Like, yeah, man, you stand up for yourself. You
- 46:53get what you deserve, girl. Yeah. She like stands
- 46:55on her two feet and she kind of puffs her chest
- 46:57out. She's like, no, I beat you. You're an idiot.
- 46:59You don't even realise that my mice have the
- 47:02wand that are running away right now. But just
- 47:05before. I wish she said that exact line. You
- 47:08don't even realise that my mice. have the wand
- 47:11but right before like right as she's revealed
- 47:18as well Drizella's like I didn't realise you
- 47:21worked here there's a cute little chase scene
- 47:25with the mice versus Lucifer because Lucifer
- 47:28the cat gets sent to catch the mice and they
- 47:34start using magic and it's very silly. We get
- 47:37a horrible, horrible Jack in the Box freak version
- 47:43of Lucifer. I hated that. It's the origin of
- 47:48the horrible pervert Jack in the Box from Steadfast
- 47:51Tid Soldier. From Fantasia 2000. Yeah. Oh, I
- 47:57hate that guy. I hate this guy as well. It was
- 48:00horrible. They get all the way to the exit. There's
- 48:04the prince. He's there. Cinderella's got the
- 48:07wand in her hand and she's like, remember me,
- 48:09bippity boppity. And then she gets grabbed before
- 48:12she could say boo. So she can't break the spell.
- 48:15Yeah. It's a dang shame. Tremaine tries to play
- 48:19it off like, this diseased maid tried to steal
- 48:22my pretty stick. What is going on in your bloody
- 48:24kingdom? Lady Tremaine's like, take her away
- 48:27and all of this. And Cinderella manages to touch
- 48:30the prince again because the prince is like,
- 48:32oh, she's not. that bad she's all right don't
- 48:36worry about it she was just excitable or whatever
- 48:38i don't know and they they touch hands again
- 48:41he like looks at his hand and he's like oh lady
- 48:44tremaine whispers to one of the guards and she's
- 48:47like banish her make sure she doesn't come back
- 48:52yeah and then the guard's like hell yeah there's
- 48:55a nice little bit there as well where it's such
- 48:57a subtle detail which i really appreciate they
- 48:59put in but the prince kind of like bumps into
- 49:00tremaine as she goes over to cinderella and there's
- 49:03a split second where you see lady tremaine's
- 49:05face like disgusted by it and i just like this
- 49:08detail that like even when it's the prince she
- 49:10just thinks everyone is beneath her it's like
- 49:13really great like little um detail in the animation
- 49:16to really flesh that out she's just horrible
- 49:19to everyone and i love it she's like she's so
- 49:23mean all she wants is power and like you say
- 49:26now that she's got the wand even if she didn't
- 49:30have the wand she would do that because she thinks
- 49:32she's better than everyone yeah what a what a
- 49:35bitch i love her so cinderella's getting banished
- 49:38and meanwhile the mice decide to step in they
- 49:40decide to explain to the prince what's going
- 49:42on which leads to i think your favorite part
- 49:44of the movie if i'm not mistaken uh one of one
- 49:47of uh i really like this part though the mice
- 49:50do a little song and a dance to kind of explain
- 49:53to the prince that he's been brainwashed and
- 49:56it was actually cinderelly that was at the dance
- 49:59but he's been oh you've been brainwashed by lady
- 50:02tremaine and as jacques is uh talking about lady
- 50:05tremaine he like slicks his hair back and it
- 50:08turns into her hair as he's doing the thing it's
- 50:12it's very cute it's a really nice scene and then
- 50:15there's a great bit of the song as well like
- 50:17there's two details i love in the song the first
- 50:19one is there's a bit where they explain she's
- 50:21gonna get cinderella banished and gus just stops
- 50:24the song he's like he's like that he just breaks
- 50:27down crying like no no he's like fainting he's
- 50:30like no and then the other thing i really love
- 50:32is that while they're singing this little thing
- 50:34about recapping the movie like the prince is
- 50:36like kind of like really intently like stroking
- 50:38his chin like yes Yes, yes, this makes sense.
- 50:41Interesting. Tell me more talking mice. Also,
- 50:45just quickly while we're on Jock as well, I criticised
- 50:48him in the last movie for his voice sounded like
- 50:50really rotten to me. Yeah. I think the way he
- 50:53described it is like, I think as a TV show, they
- 50:56wanted one of the mice to sound more human so
- 50:58it was easier to understand for kids. But in
- 51:00this one... same voice actor crushes it he sounds
- 51:04pretty much exactly like he did in the first
- 51:05movie they just let him do the mouse ring again
- 51:07and he's so much better agreed i think he's great
- 51:09i think gus sounded fine in the last one but
- 51:12he sounds even better in this one he sounds great
- 51:14gus is actually voiced by cory burton who's one
- 51:17of the most famous voice actors ever i don't
- 51:20know him Oh, you do. You do. He's in Arkham City.
- 51:25He's Hugo Strange. He's Count Dooku in the Clone
- 51:28Wars. He's Shockwave in the old Transformers
- 51:32and Megatron in the new Transformers. Loads.
- 51:35Nice. But in Cinderella Land, there's a little
- 51:37song and the prince is like, I better take care
- 51:40of this. Oh, and the birds come in with the repaired
- 51:43glass slipper. Oh, yeah. It's not just the word
- 51:46of the mice that he's on. He's got some stone
- 51:48cold evidence there as well. Exactly, yeah. And
- 51:52he fucks off. And then he opens the door again
- 51:55and he's like, By the way, fellas, nice song.
- 51:58And then runs away. I love that bit. It's lovely.
- 52:01It's so nice. It's really nice. It's so silly.
- 52:04He gets my favourite line where he goes storming
- 52:07out of the castle. He's like a rabid dog just
- 52:09sprinting out. And the king catches up with him
- 52:11and he's like, Where are you going? And he's
- 52:13like, I have to go. And the king's like, Go?
- 52:14But you're about to be married. And the prince
- 52:16is like, But the talking mice said it's the wrong
- 52:19girl. It's so good. And then it's followed up
- 52:22with the king is like, I'm taking another step
- 52:26down these stairs. Yeah. And he goes. All right.
- 52:29And he fucking jumps out the window. It's so
- 52:34funny. I love how much of the back end of this
- 52:36movie just chooses chaos. It's nuts. Oh, man.
- 52:39It's great. It's so funny. So he's on his way
- 52:43to Cinderella. Again, we have to see this poor
- 52:45girl just destroyed and heartbroken, slowly walking
- 52:48on a ship to get banished from the kingdom forever.
- 52:51I don't even know where that ship's going. Germany,
- 52:53probably. Or fucking going all the way to Siberia.
- 52:57She's going into the gulags. You work and you
- 53:02eat beetroot. She will be wearing squirrel slippers
- 53:05over there. And she looks so miserable, but thank
- 53:10God the prince jumps on the boat and he's like,
- 53:13I'm here to save the bloody day. The mice told
- 53:16me everything. There's such a good little line
- 53:18because me and you both live true to the Cinderella
- 53:21supremacy. The mice call us Cinderella and it's
- 53:23so cute. Oh yeah. So obviously the only knowledge
- 53:26he has of her name is from these mice so he goes
- 53:28on one knee and proposes. Will you marry me Cinderella?
- 53:32Unbelievable. It's lovely. It's so nice and she
- 53:35corrects him and then he's like Cinderella? Were
- 53:38you called Ella before and then got covered in
- 53:40cinders? And they go back to the castle and it's
- 53:45happy ever after. Unless it's not the ending.
- 53:48And we're just getting to the best part. So they
- 53:50get back to the castle and Lady Tremaine and
- 53:53the stepsisters are up in the top room. They
- 53:56see Cinderella come down and you see the prince
- 53:59explaining and then they point up to the room
- 54:02and they're like, Go get them! Arrest them! Banish
- 54:04them! And Lady Tremaine's like, I've got an idea.
- 54:08So she's basically cast a spell on Anastasia
- 54:10to make her look like Cinderella. She's given
- 54:13up. She's like, Okay, clearly the spell's only
- 54:16going to work to some extent because he's fallen
- 54:18in love with Cinderella. So, new plan. We'll
- 54:21just get rid of this Cinderella and we'll make
- 54:22you Cinderella. And you can tell that Anastasia's
- 54:25not happy about it and Cinderella's even less
- 54:27happy about it. I'm making my own Cinderella
- 54:29with blackjack and hookers. So it's time to dispose
- 54:33of old Cinderella so we get the most metal part
- 54:36of the movie. In this almost like dark version
- 54:38of the fairy godmother spell they cast Cinderella
- 54:41into a pumpkin which grows horribly. around her
- 54:45it's so gross the animation on it is unbelievable
- 54:48it's like she's all crammed in there at first
- 54:51and it starts growing and then like a hole appears
- 54:54in the middle and her and the mice Stuck in this
- 54:57thing as these thorned vines spur from it. And
- 55:01it like wraps around the horse and digs in and
- 55:03drags this horse screaming towards it. Oh, it's
- 55:06horrible. A horrible bit of Cinderella going
- 55:09to reach outside the carriage to like kind of
- 55:12like calm the horse. And then like the vines
- 55:14stop her reaching out and stuff like that. It's
- 55:16just so gruesome. And then that dirty little
- 55:19cherry on the cake is... Tremaine turns that
- 55:22horrible fucking cat Lucifer into a real guy
- 55:24and the cat's played by Frank Welko who plays
- 55:28Megatron and this is this is where like Frank
- 55:32Welko goes from just making cool animal noises
- 55:34to fucking Satan like oh my god human Lucifer
- 55:37is horrible He never speaks. He's just got this
- 55:42horrible cackle and they animate him with such
- 55:45glee in his face. It's demented. Such glee to
- 55:49be on a horse that's covered in vines, whipping
- 55:53the shit out of it as well. He's just being proper
- 55:56horrible Lucifer. Going to kill this poor girl
- 56:00who used to feed him in the first one. She defended
- 56:03him against the dog. Put that cat down. Yeah,
- 56:06as a man as well because it'd be easier. butt
- 56:09that man down but this entire chase sequence
- 56:12is so cool it's so brilliantly animated like
- 56:15flashes of oranges and dark colors and the scores
- 56:20popping the fuck off it's it's so fun wild and
- 56:24i Like you say, it's just this perfect like antithesis
- 56:28of the first one. Oh, it's just so good. It's
- 56:33filled with action. It's really tense. There's
- 56:36genuine like peril for all the characters. So
- 56:40Gus is about to be eaten by human Lucifer. Cinderella
- 56:43is about to fall off a cliff because Lucifer's
- 56:46just going to drive it straight off a cliff.
- 56:48Jacques is also there and in peril about to be
- 56:51like... He nearly falls off the back of it actually
- 56:54because... lucifer like swats him away oh man
- 56:57it just it works so well and it's genuinely such
- 57:02a good mad max level chase scene it's sick it's
- 57:09so cool i didn't expect the film to go to this
- 57:12kind of like point and i really enjoyed that
- 57:14so yeah they managed to um stop lucifer They
- 57:18escape this and they head back to the castle
- 57:20where the sham went between fake Cinderella aka
- 57:22Anastasia and the prince is taking place or about
- 57:25to take place. They get there just as it's like
- 57:28that typical like tension of like oh she's just
- 57:31at the door and she's getting held up but they're
- 57:33about to do the I do's and like it's like she's
- 57:36not gonna make it. Instead of just having like
- 57:38Cinderella come in and like I object. They instead
- 57:41give the floor to Anastasia who realises like
- 57:44look I don't like this. She literally says I
- 57:46don't. I really like what they're doing for character.
- 57:49It felt natural that she'd be at this point of
- 57:52the story. She's experienced true kindness from
- 57:55the prince in that. She knows what she wants
- 57:57with actual love for who she is, not for pretending
- 58:00to be Cinderella. And she's just like, enough's
- 58:03enough. This is weird now. It's also great because
- 58:07it picks up on a couple of things at the same
- 58:10time as they're doing the vows. The prince holds
- 58:15her hands and then realises, again, this isn't
- 58:20Cinderella. So it's like this multifaceted...
- 58:23It's like multiple people at the same time would
- 58:26say, stop, stop, stop, kind of thing. Yeah, like
- 58:30it was never going to work. It was never going
- 58:33to work because there was three points of failure.
- 58:36Cinderella coming in. the prince realizing it's
- 58:39not cinderella just by touch alone and then her
- 58:42being like i don't i love it it's so seamlessly
- 58:46crafted as well ah i am glad that of all the
- 58:50the points it's given anastasia so despite the
- 58:54fact that they've decanonized two They kind of
- 58:57take that story and they give it a much more
- 58:59satisfying take on it where she gets this more
- 59:02earned redemption. It's a lot better. Oh, it's
- 59:05so good. I really like as well, because obviously
- 59:08after the reveal, Lady Tremaine kicks the fuck
- 59:11off. She starts casting spells and they're like,
- 59:12blah, blah, you're a frog, you're a frog. And
- 59:16I like that when she turns to Anastasia, Cinderella.
- 59:19in turn now goes in front of her and defends
- 59:21her which is just a nice touch. I like that.
- 59:23It just fits. I really like this character. She's
- 59:26so sweet. She's standing up for her sister and
- 59:29she's grown as a person and she can stand up
- 59:32for herself as Lady Tremaine is casting this
- 59:36spell. Prince Charming stands in front. And he
- 59:39draws his sword and the spell gets reflected
- 59:42off it and it hits Drizelle and Lady Tremaine.
- 59:46They're little toads now. They're maid toads.
- 59:48Yeah. In a jail as well. Yeah. I do like that
- 59:52they get turned into maids. There's like a little
- 59:54post -credit scene where they go back from toads
- 59:56to maids and I think that's probably, they probably
- 59:58hate that. There's literally a line in the first
- 1:00:00song where one of the sisters say, we have to
- 1:00:03do chores now and I'd rather be in jail forever.
- 1:00:05Oh yeah! I like that they get their worst possible
- 1:00:10fate. I have one slight complaint with the climax
- 1:00:14for this film. And that is the concept of the
- 1:00:18fake Cinderella going to marry Prince Charming.
- 1:00:21And the way that Lady Tremaine gets defeated
- 1:00:24feels a little bit derivative of Shrek 2. Do
- 1:00:29you know what I mean? Fuck, you are so right.
- 1:00:32Like, genuinely, it's the same, isn't it? Yeah,
- 1:00:35so in Shrek 2, they don't, like, disguise Prince
- 1:00:37Charming, but Shrek's taken the potion, so they
- 1:00:40use that as an excuse to be like, oh, he turned
- 1:00:42into Prince Charming, which is similar. And then
- 1:00:45the bit at the end where, like, a fairy godmother
- 1:00:47goes crazy and she's casting all the spells and
- 1:00:49it gets reflected onto her. Did she turn into
- 1:00:51a toad in that as well? She turns into a bubble.
- 1:00:56That felt a bit similar to Shrek as well. But
- 1:00:58it's not like an entire section of the movie.
- 1:01:02It's just like, oh, it's a bit familiar. But
- 1:01:03to be fair, the real climax of the movie is that
- 1:01:07goddamn pumpkin ride. I'm fine with that. It's
- 1:01:10so good. They get sent off to jail and then Cinderella
- 1:01:14starts... Oh, no. Whoever's got the wand starts
- 1:01:18undoing things. Anastasia takes off her Cinderella
- 1:01:21guise. Which is a really nice reversal of the...
- 1:01:26The dress animation, yeah. Oh, I love that. I
- 1:01:29screamed, I cried, I threw up when that happened.
- 1:01:33And I think she's also the one that un -petrifies,
- 1:01:35because I don't know if you mentioned it, but
- 1:01:37at the beginning, they turn the fairy godmother
- 1:01:39into stone so they can keep using the wand. But
- 1:01:42Anastasia now undoes that so she can come back
- 1:01:44and undo the rest of the spell. Well, she doesn't
- 1:01:47actually undo the rest of the spell, does she?
- 1:01:48She offers to. She says, do you want your old
- 1:01:51lives back? And Cinderella and the prince are
- 1:01:53like, what? And she's like... ah it doesn't matter
- 1:01:56i'm going to bed fuck off um happy ever after
- 1:01:59happy ever after and there is a little i already
- 1:02:04mentioned that little scene in the credits but
- 1:02:05there's something else in the credits where they're
- 1:02:07doing like riffs on different paintings like
- 1:02:09the grand duke is the scream painting and in
- 1:02:11one of the paintings anastasia's meeting the
- 1:02:13baker from the bit in the second one which makes
- 1:02:15it even more confusing because like is that Where
- 1:02:18does it take place? I don't understand. It doesn't
- 1:02:22work at all. It can't work. I guess it's just
- 1:02:24a coincidence. Yeah, it's bizarre. I don't understand,
- 1:02:28and I don't want to. No. I'd rather just ignore
- 1:02:31that and appreciate this as just its own thing.
- 1:02:34Yeah. Well, that was Cinderella, A Twist in Time.
- 1:02:39Twas. Twas. There's a couple of bits of trivia
- 1:02:42I just want to... quickly touch on for you i
- 1:02:45i think i've already brought up most of it to
- 1:02:47be fair so i've only got two points left but
- 1:02:48um one of them is this is sadly disney australia's
- 1:02:51final feature the studio was closed and they
- 1:02:54auctioned off all the equipment following this
- 1:02:55movie which kind of sucks because they did a
- 1:02:58really good job on this r .i .p big man and i
- 1:03:02want to bring together two of the threads of
- 1:03:04little setup for you there so this came out in
- 1:03:062007 In 2005, there was a pantomime thing called
- 1:03:10Twice Charmed, an original twist on the Cinderella
- 1:03:13story. This, as I mentioned, was on the Disney
- 1:03:16ferries. But the plot was that the fairy godmother
- 1:03:19loses a wand, Lady Tremaine gets it, and she
- 1:03:22undoes time. And it's not the exact same, but
- 1:03:26that's a very, very specific premise. This was
- 1:03:29two years before this came out, did you say?
- 1:03:31Yes. What? What? And I think something that's
- 1:03:37even weirder about it is... the director downplays
- 1:03:41any knowledge of it and he downplays any connection
- 1:03:45between it and he even refers it to i can't remember
- 1:03:47the specific example he gave but he he kind of
- 1:03:50like references it in the same sort of way as
- 1:03:52like you know like yeah two hercules films came
- 1:03:55out and they weren't connected but it's just
- 1:03:56two people had the same thought at the same time
- 1:03:58you kind of like make some references if it's
- 1:04:01like one of those kind of things but it's like
- 1:04:02no this is the same franchise with the same premise
- 1:04:05that's very weird odd yeah even more damning
- 1:04:09is like okay maybe he didn't hear of this ever
- 1:04:12but the songwriters for the the pantomime were
- 1:04:16michael wiener and alan zachary who did this
- 1:04:19so it's like i don't know what's going on there
- 1:04:21where it's like i don't know like like why don't
- 1:04:25you just say like this was inspired by that and
- 1:04:27then if it's not inspired by that like how did
- 1:04:29that never come up like they worked on it why
- 1:04:31did they not mention like hey this is like that
- 1:04:33thing we did before and you're like what it's
- 1:04:35so strange i don't understand what happened there
- 1:04:36do you reckon there's like a conspiracy you know
- 1:04:39like how stalin edited out people from pictures
- 1:04:45I don't know what word I was expecting you to
- 1:04:46say, but I didn't expect it to be Stalin. It
- 1:04:48wasn't Stalin. Do you reckon there's a picture
- 1:04:51of him like on the cruise that's like so secret?
- 1:04:55He's like watching the pantomime and noting things
- 1:04:58down. And then the one that we see that he's
- 1:05:01not there. He's been erased out of the image.
- 1:05:04Like it's a big Disney cover up. In the Mysterio
- 1:05:11film, the Spider -Man Far From Home, where there's
- 1:05:14Tony Stark stealing his tech and then the quick
- 1:05:16shot of Jake Gyllenhaal behind him looking furious.
- 1:05:19That's like the pattern of my writer. I just
- 1:05:23don't get it. I don't know why they would lie
- 1:05:27about this. Oh, that's so bizarre. And it depends
- 1:05:31on the production time of this as well, because
- 1:05:34I imagine the turnaround on these straight -to
- 1:05:36-DVDs is quick. It's probably short, yeah. So
- 1:05:39it would have been, he probably saw it and then
- 1:05:42was like, we have to get this out now, kind of
- 1:05:45thing. When you read, like, there's a few, like,
- 1:05:48interviews with him, and when you read it, like,
- 1:05:51he's very, he's never mean about it, but he's
- 1:05:54like, he literally says in one of them, like,
- 1:05:56I have to be careful what I say, but a pantomime's
- 1:05:58not really a story. Everything is, like, he's,
- 1:06:01like, very much putting that one down. It's like,
- 1:06:04what is going on here? What a prick. It's so
- 1:06:07strange. Like, he's right, pantomimes do suck,
- 1:06:11but, like, there's clearly some connection. Yeah,
- 1:06:15100%. Oh, my God, that is... I love that bit
- 1:06:18of trivia. That's very fun. That's pretty much
- 1:06:22all I had. Oh, amazing. Well, then, Andy, it's
- 1:06:26tradition around here that after we've looked
- 1:06:29at the sequel, we shove it into our ranking system.
- 1:06:32That's right, yeah, we put it in the grinder,
- 1:06:34we grind it down. into a big beef patty. And
- 1:06:37we shoved that in a DVD case and whatever's on
- 1:06:39the DVD case is how much we liked it. Yeah. So
- 1:06:45our ranking system, it's four quadrants. It starts
- 1:06:48at the very bottom of the bargain bin. This is
- 1:06:51something that just goes straight to DVD. It
- 1:06:52doesn't even sell at full price. It just goes
- 1:06:54on sale immediately. Above that, we've got straight
- 1:06:56to video, which is, you know, basically it's
- 1:06:59a film. It's fine. It'll entertain your kids.
- 1:07:01It's out there, but like... you're watching it
- 1:07:04at home you see it on the shelf and you're like
- 1:07:06no and then you go to the next set of dvds yeah
- 1:07:12you watch it and then you probably don't remember
- 1:07:15it uh we've got the diamond edition which is
- 1:07:17a little step above that like it's still a straighter
- 1:07:19dvd but oh some nice special features it gets
- 1:07:23a nice treatment uh this is a decent little film
- 1:07:25actually Maybe it has a slip cover on it and
- 1:07:28some unique art. And then right above that, we've
- 1:07:33got what we like to call the Disney classics,
- 1:07:35which is the, this is the section where we put
- 1:07:38any film that really should have been theatrical
- 1:07:40released. It should be on the same par as the
- 1:07:43other Disney classic films. It's the creme de
- 1:07:45la creme. So where do you think Cinderella 3,
- 1:07:51A Twist in Time belongs on our little ranking
- 1:07:53system? Bearing in mind that you have already
- 1:07:55told us. Yeah, I kind of did tell you, so I'm
- 1:08:00not going to shock anyone. This is a fucking
- 1:08:03Disney classic. It's so good. It's so good. Doesn't
- 1:08:09deserve to be in any of the others. I did not,
- 1:08:13like, there was no point in this that I was like,
- 1:08:16this is boring. Yeah. I, and this was controversial.
- 1:08:21I think I might like it better than the original.
- 1:08:25To be honest, when I watched this, because I
- 1:08:27watched this before you, and then even then,
- 1:08:29like before we record, we really don't let each
- 1:08:31other know our thoughts. I was really worried
- 1:08:35that going into this, I was going to have a bit
- 1:08:36of a nightmare and we'd have our first disagreement
- 1:08:38because I was like, I'm putting this in Disney
- 1:08:41Classics. Thank God it hit for you as well. Yes!
- 1:08:46I agree. I like Cinderella 1 more than you, and
- 1:08:50I still like this more than that. It's so good,
- 1:08:53isn't it? Yeah, it feels like it should have...
- 1:08:56I know it did get Fiat -recruited here, but it
- 1:08:58should have been a worldwide one. This is really
- 1:09:00good. They should have been well proud of this.
- 1:09:02It's shockingly good, this is the thing. Like,
- 1:09:06when you mentioned... That we were going to cover
- 1:09:09Cinderella 2 and Cinderella 3. One after the
- 1:09:11other. I was like, this is going to be the end
- 1:09:14of me. I'm going to die. I nearly did after Cinderella
- 1:09:172. I've been brought back to life. Like, there's
- 1:09:20so much. Yeah, I have hope. I have hope for some
- 1:09:24of these sequels. Because this is a certified
- 1:09:27banger. This is such a good film. Please go and
- 1:09:32watch it. I didn't expect it, but I completely
- 1:09:34agree. Although I would be curious to find out
- 1:09:37how other people agree with us as well. Oh, would
- 1:09:40you? Would you now? Would you like some... Do
- 1:09:42you want some yummy little letterboxd? Oh, that
- 1:09:44would be delightful. That would be absolutely
- 1:09:46delightful. What a chaser for this lovely little
- 1:09:49meal we've had. So we have a review here from
- 1:09:53Stevie. Five stars. And it says, you know what?
- 1:09:57Question mark. Fuck you. Name a joke that doesn't
- 1:10:00land. Agreed. Yeah. So we've got four and a half
- 1:10:05stars from Liam Expert Film. And he says, always
- 1:10:09the guiltiest pleasure to watch this. The scene
- 1:10:12where the prince dips out through the window
- 1:10:14is peak comedy. Agreed. The ending is sweet.
- 1:10:18Cinderella and the prince's relationship is nice.
- 1:10:21Overall, despite some little moments that made
- 1:10:23me cringe, it's still a very worthy sequel to
- 1:10:27the original. Four and a half stars. agreed apart
- 1:10:30from the cringe part because i don't think there's
- 1:10:33anything um no not really uh brooke catherine
- 1:10:37gave it five stars said this is how you do a
- 1:10:39badass princess agreed yeah oh my god someone
- 1:10:43understands me five stars from princess lucas
- 1:10:46the evil magic pumpkin carriage is my mad max
- 1:10:49fury road We've got three stars from My Gojo
- 1:10:54Academia, who says, a Disney sequel that's low
- 1:10:58-key better than the original. We've got one
- 1:11:00from MILF, five stars. More people need to see
- 1:11:04this movie. Do you know what? It's mostly three
- 1:11:08stars, but there's 10 ,933 five -star reviews
- 1:11:16on this. So it is liked a lot. It does have a
- 1:11:20lot of love. I'm reinvigorated for whatever we've
- 1:11:25got coming next. Nice. Well, next we have the
- 1:11:29sequel to Peter Pan and this is called Return
- 1:11:32to Neverland. It's not called Peter Pan 2. They
- 1:11:36were like, you know what? You know what the fuck
- 1:11:39this is, bitch. I've actually seen this one as
- 1:11:42a little kid and I don't remember. I was seven.
- 1:11:45I don't remember anything about it other than
- 1:11:47one specific scene, which I'm sure I'll get into
- 1:11:49next week. Have you got any experience with this
- 1:11:52or the original at all? As we mentioned a few
- 1:11:55episodes ago, I am not a Peterphile. Yes, that's
- 1:11:59right. I do not remember Peter Pan at all. I'm
- 1:12:03going to be re -watching Peter Pan. I've definitely
- 1:12:07seen it, but... It was probably when I was a
- 1:12:10tiny little baby on a VHS and I've not seen Return
- 1:12:14to Neverland. So I have no idea what this is
- 1:12:17going to be. Yeah, I'm excited. Excited to...
- 1:12:20I'm not going to say that. What are you going
- 1:12:23to say? Become a pedophile? Yeah! I'm not going
- 1:12:28to say that. I'm not. So in the meantime, while
- 1:12:34you're waiting for... The return to Neverland.
