- 0:11Hello friends, it's shown here. It is Monday, it is the last
- 0:16Monday of 2024, it's the 30th of December and it is good to have
- 0:23your company. I reckon most of you are
- 0:26probably taking it easy, enjoying some easy days as you
- 0:30go about this strange twilight zone between Christmas and New
- 0:35Year, where the days kind of bleed into each other and you
- 0:38take it a little bit easier. Ah, that's going on for you now
- 0:41friends. Enjoy this time, enjoy just
- 0:44being unplugged and forgetting what day of the week it is.
- 0:48But what you haven't forgotten is to tap on play.
- 0:50And thank you for inviting me into your chill period so that
- 0:54we can continue this story together.
- 0:57We, of course, are reading through the story of First Kings
- 1:01and we are about to spend some time in Solomon's company, and
- 1:06he is a pretty amazing guy. And as we listen to his story of
- 1:11coming to power and the way that he rules for most of his time
- 1:15anyway, these are dead set the golden years of Jewish history.
- 1:21This is the period where they are at their greatest,
- 1:24strongest, most advanced, most prolific, and glorious and
- 1:29powerful and influential in the world of kings anyway.
- 1:34So we will enjoy this part of the story, but never, never
- 1:37forgetting that the purpose of the Book of Kings is not to
- 1:40glorify the King's reigns, but to point out that their reign is
- 1:45never, never going to be as good as God's reign.
- 1:48In fact, they fall well short by the time we come to the end of
- 1:51these stories. So let's continue on our way,
- 1:54hearing all about David handing that flaming torch over to his
- 1:58son Solomon as we read together First Kings Chapter 2.
- 2:14As the time of King David's death approached, he gave this
- 2:18charge to his son Solomon. I am going where everyone on
- 2:23earth must someday go. Take courage and be a man.
- 2:29Observe the requirements of the Lord your God and follow all His
- 2:33ways. Keep the decrees, command,
- 2:37regulations, and laws written in the law of Moses so that you
- 2:41will be successful in all you do and wherever you go.
- 2:47If you do this, then the Lord will keep the promise He made to
- 2:51me. He told me if your descendants
- 2:55live as they should and follow me faithfully with all their
- 2:59heart and soul, one of them will always sit on the throne of
- 3:04Israel. And there is something else.
- 3:09You know what Joab son of Jeroiah did to me when he
- 3:12murdered my two army commanders, Abner, son of Ner, and Amasa,
- 3:17son of Jetha. He pretended that it was an act
- 3:21of war, but it was done in a time of peace, staining his belt
- 3:26and sandals with innocent blood. Do with him what you think best,
- 3:31but don't let him grow old and go to his grave in peace.
- 3:37Be kind to the sons of Bazalai of Gilead.
- 3:41Make them permanent guests at your table, for they took care
- 3:44of me when I fled from your brother Absalom.
- 3:48And remember Shimei, son of Gera, the man from Bahurim in
- 3:53Benjamin. He cursed me with a terrible
- 3:56curse as I was fleeing Mahanaim when he came down to meet me at
- 4:01the Jordan River. I swore by the Lord that I would
- 4:04not kill him, but that oath does not make him innocent.
- 4:09You are a wise man, and you will know how to arrange a bloody
- 4:13death for him. Then David died and was buried
- 4:18with his ancestors in the city of David.
- 4:22David had reigned over Israel for 40 years, seven of them in
- 4:26Hebron and 33 in Jerusalem. Solomon became king and sat on
- 4:32the throne of David, his father, and his Kingdom was firmly
- 4:36established. One day, Adonijah, whose mother
- 4:41was Haggoth, came to see Bathsheba, Solomon's mother.
- 4:45Have you come with peaceful intentions?
- 4:48She asked him. Yes, he said.
- 4:52In fact, I have a favour to ask of you.
- 4:55What is it, She asked. He replied.
- 4:59As you know, the Kingdom was rightfully mine.
- 5:02All Israel wanted me to be the next king, but the tables were
- 5:06turned and the Kingdom went to my brother instead, for that is
- 5:10the way the Lord wanted it. So now I have just one favour to
- 5:15ask of you. Please don't turn me down.
- 5:18What is it? She asked.
- 5:21He replied, Speak to King Solomon on my behalf, for I know
- 5:25he will do anything you request. Ask him to let me marry Abishag,
- 5:30the girl from Shunam. All right, Bathsheba replied.
- 5:35I will speak to the king for you.
- 5:38So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak on Adonijah's
- 5:42behalf. The king rose from his throne to
- 5:44meet her, and he bowed down before her.
- 5:48When he sat down on his throne again, the king ordered that a
- 5:51throne be brought for his mother and she sat at his right hand.
- 5:56I have one small request to make of you, she said.
- 5:59I hope you won't turn me down. What is it my mother?
- 6:03He asked. You know I won't refuse you.
- 6:07Then let your brother Adeniger marry Abishag, the girl from
- 6:11Shunam, She replied. How can you possibly ask me to
- 6:16give Abishag to Adonijah? King Solomon demanded.
- 6:20You might as well ask me to give him the Kingdom.
- 6:23You know that he is my older brother and that he has Abiatha
- 6:27the priest and Joab son of Jeroiah on his side.
- 6:32Then King Solomon made a vow before the Lord.
- 6:35May God strike me and even kill me if Adonijah has not sealed
- 6:40his fate. With this request, the Lord has
- 6:44confirmed me and placed me on the throne of my father David.
- 6:48He has established my dynasty as he promised.
- 6:52So as surely as the Lord lives, Adonijah will die this very day.
- 6:58So King Solomon ordered Binaya son of Jehoiada to execute him,
- 7:03and Adonijah was put to death. Then the king said to Abiatha,
- 7:08the priest, go back to your home in Anathoth.
- 7:12You deserve to die, but I will not kill you now, because you
- 7:17carried the ark of the Sovereign Lord for David my father, and
- 7:21you shared all his hardships. Sir Solomon deposed Abiatha from
- 7:26his position as priest of the Lord, thereby fulfilling the
- 7:30prophecy the Lord had given at Shiloh concerning the
- 7:34descendants of Eli. Joab had not joined Absalom's
- 7:39earlier rebellion, but he had joined Adonijah's rebellion.
- 7:43So when Joab heard about Adonijah's death, he ran to the
- 7:47Sacred Tent to the Lord and grabbed onto the horns of the
- 7:50altar. When this was reported to King
- 7:53Solomon, he sent Beniah son of Jehoiada to execute him.
- 7:59Beniah went to the Sacred Tent to the Lord and said to Joab,
- 8:02The king orders you to come out. But Joab answered, No, I will
- 8:08die here. So Benaiah returned to the king
- 8:12and told him what Joab had said. Do as he said, the king replied.
- 8:18Kill him there beside the altar, and bury him.
- 8:21This will remove the guilt of Joab's senseless murders from me
- 8:25and from my father's family. The Lord will repay him for the
- 8:29murders of two men who are more righteous and better than he.
- 8:34For my father knew nothing about the deaths of Abner son of Ner,
- 8:38commander of the army of Israel, and of Amassa son of Jetha,
- 8:42commander of the army of Judah. May their blood be on Joab and
- 8:47his descendants forever, and may the Lord grant peace forever to
- 8:51David, his descendants, his dynasty, and his throne.
- 8:58So Binaya son of Jehoiada returned to the Sacred Tent and
- 9:02killed Joab, and he was buried at his home in the wilderness.
- 9:07Then the king appointed Banaya to command the army in place of
- 9:10Joab, and he installed Zadok the priest to take the place of
- 9:15Abiatha. The king then sent for Shimay
- 9:19and told him Build a house here in Jerusalem and live there, but
- 9:23don't step outside the city to go anywhere else.
- 9:28On the day you so much as cross the Kidron Valley, you will
- 9:31surely die and your blood will be on your own head.
- 9:36Shimay replied. Your sentence is fair.
- 9:40I will do whatever my Lord the king commands.
- 9:43So Shimay lived in Jerusalem for a long time, but three years
- 9:48later, 2 of Shimay's slaves ran away to King Akish, son of Marka
- 9:53of Gath. When Shimay learned where they
- 9:55were, he saddled his donkey and went to Gath to search for them.
- 10:00When he found them, he brought them back to Jerusalem.
- 10:04Solomon heard that Chimay had left Jerusalem and gone to Gath
- 10:08and returned. So the king sent for Chimay and
- 10:10demanded, Didn't I make you swear by the Lord and warn you
- 10:15not to go anywhere else, or you would surely die?
- 10:19And you replied, The sentence is fair, I will do as you say.
- 10:24Then why haven't you kept your oath to the Lord and obeyed my
- 10:27command? The king also said to Shimay.
- 10:31You certainly remember all the wicked things you did to my
- 10:34father David. May the Lord now bring that evil
- 10:38on your own head. But may I, King Solomon, receive
- 10:43the Lord's blessing, and May 1 of David's descendants always
- 10:47sit on his throne in the presence of the Lord.
- 10:51Then, at the King's command, Banaya, son of Jehoiada, took
- 10:56Shimay outside and killed him. So the Kingdom was now firmly in
- 11:02Solomon's grip. Oh Lord, in this Bible reading
- 11:15we see so clearly that the things that we do have clear
- 11:20consequences, and that's so often those consequences cannot
- 11:24be dodged or cannot be avoided, but they will play out in the
- 11:27fullness of time. We understand this Lord, for
- 11:31that is how the world works, Lord, but you, you have shown us
- 11:35a completely different way. We celebrate the birth of Jesus
- 11:40and his coming into this world where you show us a different
- 11:44way, a way of forgiveness and a way of restoration and a way of
- 11:51love. You show us so clearly through
- 11:53the way that Jesus has lived and the truth that he shared about
- 11:57you and your character. Our Lord thank you for your
- 12:01forgiveness that even though we have turn from you in so many
- 12:05ways and done the wrong thing, you forgive us and through Jesus
- 12:10sacrifice for us our slate is wiped clean and we come to you
- 12:16holy and acceptable through His sacrificial death for us.
- 12:20Oh, we are so grateful that you have rigged the system in our
- 12:25benefit because of your love for us.
- 12:29Help us always to live in that love, that redemptive love hard
- 12:34earned for us. Thank you Jesus, for doing this
- 12:38for us. We love you and we praise you
- 12:41and we pray all these things in your precious name, Amen.
