- 0:00Well, good evening, Christ Community Church.
- 0:02I invite you to open up your Bibles in the book of Titus.
- 0:06We're going to be in chapter 2, verses 11 to 14, Titus chapter
- 0:112, verses 11 to 14. First, before we start our
- 0:16message for tonight, I just want to give thanks to the Lord for
- 0:19bringing me here. I think Pastor Lance and the
- 0:22rest of the elders, Roger, Tom and Esteban for giving me this
- 0:26opportunity to be able to bring God's word into you.
- 0:30My prayer is that whether your answer is yay or no, I will be
- 0:34able to minister to you through this passage.
- 0:37And I pick this passage because I think it's in line with the
- 0:41strategy of the church. I love the strategy of of Christ
- 0:45Community Church. It's our passion to pursue
- 0:47Christ, priority to proclaim Christ, and it's our purpose to
- 0:53proclaim Christ, priority to portray Christ.
- 0:56And it's our practice of praise, praise Christ.
- 1:00And that's a great strategy. And upon praying upon the text
- 1:04that I'm going to use for tonight, I think it's going to
- 1:08be in line with that. We're going to be learning about
- 1:11the grace of God in Christ. And so this letter, of course,
- 1:15is written by Apostle Paul to Titus.
- 1:20And after being released from his imprisonment in Rome, and
- 1:24that's around 8060 to 62, Paul started preaching the gospel and
- 1:30started establishing churches there with a young man, Titus,
- 1:35in this Mediterranean island called Crete.
- 1:40And this island of Crete, their people are known for being lazy,
- 1:44glutton, being liars. So they're basically the the
- 1:50worst of evils of the world. And this sinful society
- 1:56basically craves the backdrop for Paul writing to them, to
- 2:03Titus. And Paul left titers there to
- 2:06create, to basically continue the work of planting churches
- 2:11there. And after 3-4 years after he
- 2:16left Titus, Paul writes to this young pastor and he says in
- 2:22chapter 1, verse five, that his purpose for writing is for the
- 2:25reason that he left him there in Crete, that he, Titus, would set
- 2:30in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as
- 2:36Paul directed him. So Paul's purpose in writing is
- 2:40to basically enable and empower Titus in establishing the
- 2:45churches on that island and to appoint elders in those
- 2:49churches. So we can see from this letter
- 2:52that Paul's concern is to make the believers there and creed
- 2:56understand and grasp the interconnectedness of sound
- 3:01doctrine and sound living. So in chapter 1, verse 9, he
- 3:07tells Titus to exhort the elders to hold fast the faithful word
- 3:12which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be
- 3:15able to both exhort and sound doctrine and to refute those who
- 3:20contradict. In the same chapter, Chapter
- 3:23one, verse 13, he instructs Titus to address those who are
- 3:26rebellious as saying reprove them severely so that they may
- 3:30be sound in the faith. And then in chapter 2, verse
- 3:34one, Paul instructs Titus himself and he says, but As for
- 3:39you Titus, speak the things which are fitting for sound
- 3:42doctrine. And throughout the book, we can
- 3:46see that Paul stresses the necessary and practical
- 3:49outworking of salvation in the daily lives of those who are
- 3:55elders and the rest of the believers in that congregation.
- 3:59See, Paul stresses the need for Christians to live righteously
- 4:04because of its impact upon the testimony and ministry of the
- 4:09church towards the sinful society within Crete.
- 4:13And this whole epistle is relevant to us with what's going
- 4:17on in our country. And so in our passage tonight,
- 4:21chapter 2, verses 11, Paul gives Titus the foundational truths
- 4:26that drive his previous instructions in verses 1 to 10.
- 4:30And after instructing all kinds of people in the church on how
- 4:35to behave, he now in this passage points to God's grace as
- 4:40the purpose and the reason why they need to submit to
- 4:44instructions. And he uses the conjunction for
- 4:48to make that connection. And so our passage reads.
- 4:52For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to
- 4:56all men, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly desires,
- 5:02to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age,
- 5:06looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of
- 5:09our great God and Savior Christ Jesus, who gave Himself for us
- 5:14to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to preify for Himself
- 5:18a people for His own possession, zealous for good deeds.
- 5:24And from this passage, I want to submit to you that God wants us
- 5:29to grasp and to understand 3 realities about God's grace so
- 5:36that we might be able to showcase the riches of that
- 5:40grace through our lives. God wants us to rest three
- 5:44reality realities about his grace so that our lives might
- 5:50serve as a showcase of the riches of His grace, showcasing
- 5:543 realities about God's grace. And 1st, we will see the person
- 5:59of God's grace from verse 11, the first half of verse 11.
- 6:04And secondly, we will see the program of God's grace from the
- 6:08second-half of verse 11 down through verse 13.
- 6:13And then thirdly, we're going to see the people of God's grace
- 6:17from verse 14. So the Pete, the person of God's
- 6:20grace, the program of God's grace, and the people of God's
- 6:25grace as showcasing the three piece of God's grace, the
- 6:28person, the program and the people.
- 6:32So let's look at the first one, the person of God's grace, verse
- 6:3811, for the grace of God has appeared.
- 6:42You see, grace is one of the attributes and perfections of
- 6:46God. It's the special expression of
- 6:49his kindness or goodness, and God's goodness is that quality
- 6:55of his essence wherein he makes his profoundly general
- 7:01generosity seen in all of his creatures.
- 7:05Grace, then, is God's disposition to show kindness to
- 7:09and improve the quality of life or the well-being of those who
- 7:14there who deserve the opposite, those who are unworthy.
- 7:19Then Paul says God's grace has appeared or manifested itself.
- 7:24But God's grace here is not lost, and it's not just an it.
- 7:30And God's grace appeared in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 7:34And Paul spells this out in verse 13 when he says that we're
- 7:41looking for and anticipating for the blessed hope and the
- 7:44appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus
- 7:49Christ. So God the Son is God's grace
- 7:53Incarnate. Christ is God's supremely
- 7:57gracious favor and gift, the fallen mankind.
- 8:01And Paul expounds on the identity of this grace Incarnate
- 8:06in chapter 3, verses four to seven.
- 8:08He says, but when the kindness of God our Savior and His love
- 8:13for mankind appeared, He saved us not on the basis of deeds
- 8:18which we have done in righteousness, but according to
- 8:22his mercy by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the
- 8:28Holy Spirit. And here it comes, verse 6, whom
- 8:32He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior,
- 8:37so that being justified by His grace, we would be made heirs
- 8:41according to the hope of eternal life.
- 8:45And the apostle John gives the same testimony when he says in
- 8:49John chapter 1 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,
- 8:54and we saw his glory, glory as of the only begotten from the
- 8:59Father, full of grace and truth. And skipping to verse 16, John
- 9:05says for his of his fullness, Christ's fullness, we have all
- 9:11receive grace upon grace. For the law was given through
- 9:16Moses, but grace and truth we're realized through Jesus Christ.
- 9:22So God's grace has appeared in the person of the Lord and
- 9:26Savior Jesus Christ. And I invite you to go to the
- 9:29second Timothy verse chapter 1, verses 8 to 10.
- 9:32And there Paul speaks of the same grace of God that he has
- 9:36given to us. He also speaks of how this grace
- 9:39has been made to appear in Christ Jesus.
- 9:43He says in verse 8, Second Timothy chapter one, verse 8,
- 9:48join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the
- 9:51power of God who has saved us and called us with a holy
- 9:55calling, not according to our works, but according to His own
- 9:59purpose and grace which was granted to us in Christ Jesus
- 10:04from all eternity. Here and here it comes, but now
- 10:10has been revealed by the appearing of our Lord, say Lord
- 10:15our Savior Christ Jesus. So Paul speaks of the same grace
- 10:20of God that he has given to us and disgrace in Christ Jesus.
- 10:26And his grace has been foreordained from all eternity.
- 10:29And this grace is not just an afterthought, it's not just an
- 10:35accident, but it's been planned. It's been predestined by God and
- 10:41manifested in His Son. So going back to our text,
- 10:46chapter 211 of Titus, for the grace of God has appeared in the
- 10:51person of Christ Jesus. God has been gracious to you and
- 10:56me by giving us life in this world for us to enjoy.
- 11:01And the Lord Jesus says and confirms that in Matthew 545
- 11:06when He says God causes His Son to rise on the evil and the good
- 11:11and since rain on the righteous and the and the unrighteous.
- 11:16And we know this to be God's common grace.
- 11:20It's common to everyone. Everyone experiences that.
- 11:23But what we have here is God's special grace in the person of
- 11:28the Lord Jesus Christ. That's why we're calling Paul's
- 11:31intent here as the person of grace.
- 11:34The person of grace question is, have you experienced the Lord
- 11:40and Savior of Jesus Christ? Have you experienced the
- 11:43kindness of God through him upon hearing the gospel of salvation
- 11:49as the Lord and Savior of Jesus Christ made an appearance in the
- 11:54eyes of your heart? For the grace of God has
- 11:58appeared. And that leads us to the second
- 12:00reality of God's grace, the program of God's grace, The
- 12:05program of God's grace. Paul continues verse 11, the
- 12:09second-half, bringing salvation to all men, instructing us to
- 12:14God to deny ungodliness and worldly desires, and to live
- 12:18sensibly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for
- 12:23the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our
- 12:26great God and Savior Christ Jesus.
- 12:30You see, Paul wants to see that the program of God's grace it's
- 12:35to save and it's to sanctify and to give us hope.
- 12:41For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation to
- 12:44all men. You see, God's grace in Christ
- 12:48came to bring salvation. Bringing salvation, you might
- 12:53ask, salvation from what? Well, Christ came to live the
- 12:57perfect life required of each of us.
- 13:03He live to die the death that satisfies the God, the wrath of
- 13:08God upon sin. He came to fulfill God's
- 13:13promises in the Old Testament about the Savior and the
- 13:16Messiah. He came to rise from the dead,
- 13:21claiming victory over death. You see, God's grace in Christ
- 13:27save came to save all men. All men.
- 13:32What does it mean? Women are excluded, right?
- 13:36It's a general term to mean mankind, right?
- 13:41It's not necessarily teaching that everyone will be saved.
- 13:45That would be the heresy of universal salvation.
- 13:48Of course, that's not what it's teaching, but basically it's
- 13:52teaching that God in His grace sent his Son and the person of
- 13:58his Son, the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, so that he would
- 14:01be able to send save mankind. It is for everyone.
- 14:06It doesn't matter what part of the world you are in.
- 14:10Christ came to save sinners. He's saved, He came to save
- 14:17mankind. So the grace of the gospel is
- 14:21for all kinds of people all over the world.
- 14:25And Paul speaks of the gospel in 2nd Corinthians 519 and he says
- 14:30God was in Christ reconciling the world to himself, not
- 14:35counting their trespasses against them, the world
- 14:39reconciling the world to him. So the first phase within the
- 14:44program of God's grace is to save now.
- 14:47The second phase within the program of God's grace is to
- 14:50sanctify God's grace in the person of Christ.
- 14:53Came verse 12, instructing us to deny ungodliness and worldly
- 15:00desires to live sensibly, righteously and godly in the
- 15:04present age and the world. And the word that Paul uses here
- 15:09for instructing has that idea of a father training his son to
- 15:13become more mature. You know, there's discipline
- 15:15involved, there's teaching and sometimes correction,
- 15:20chastisement, right? But the goal is to be able to
- 15:24take that child and make him grow.
- 15:28That's what the word means here in in by the word instructing
- 15:33here that we have and this requires the necessary
- 15:37discipline to be more like Christ.
- 15:39You see from a baby Christian, a baby little Christ, we are being
- 15:45trained and disciplined to be a more mature Christ like Christ.
- 15:52And so the gospel involves the call to repent from sins.
- 15:56It involves forsaking sin, rejecting them, and turning away
- 16:01from them. And by God's grace, we've done
- 16:04that when we responded to the goal of the gospel, right?
- 16:09The call to repent of our sins, denying ungodliness and worldly
- 16:14desires. And the word ungodliness here is
- 16:17that sinful attitude by our selfish and sinful heart.
- 16:22It's the attitude that leads us to go against God's law, His
- 16:28commandments, and His will. It's to live as if God is dead.
- 16:32It's basically practical atheism.
- 16:36It's living as if there's no God.
- 16:39Practical atheism. In practice, we live as if
- 16:42there's no God. And worldly desires here are
- 16:45everything that drives our sinful hearts and the
- 16:49unbelievers to pursue what the world offers.
- 16:53See in those desires that the Lord Jesus Christ said we would
- 16:58know what worldly desires are. In Mark 721 to 22, he says that
- 17:04from the heart comes evil thoughts, fornications, thefts,
- 17:08murders, adulteries, deeds of coveting, wickedness as well as
- 17:14deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride and foolishness.
- 17:22And there are those that Paul listed as parts of the deeds of
- 17:26the flesh in Galatians 5921. Immorality, impurity,
- 17:32sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy,
- 17:39outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions envying,
- 17:46drunkenness, carousing. See, it's any desire or lust
- 17:50that starts inside the heart, which is we know as the Control
- 17:55Center of our lives, right? Everything comes from the heart,
- 18:01The heart that the issue is. The issue of the heart, which
- 18:05then finds its fulfillment in the system that Satan sets up in
- 18:09the world to enslave people in their sins.
- 18:13That's according to Ephesians 22, when Paul says and talks
- 18:19about the sense in which you formerly walked, according to
- 18:22the curse of this world, according to the Prince of the
- 18:25power of the air, of the Spirit that is now working in the sons
- 18:29of disobedience. And so in the negative sense,
- 18:33the gospel and the grace of God trains us to deny ungodliness
- 18:38and worldly desires. But in a positive sense, the
- 18:42gospel trains us to pursue Christ likeness.
- 18:46And look at verse 12 again. It says that the grace of God is
- 18:51instructing us to live sensibly, righteously, and godly in the
- 18:56present age. See, to live sensibly is
- 19:00basically to be sober minded in any situation.
- 19:05See, it's being sensible or sober minded, not being
- 19:11influenced by any substance that will cost you to be unstable and
- 19:17to impair your judgment. Being sober minded basically is
- 19:22the opposite of being drunk or intoxicated, is the opposite of
- 19:26being reckless, irresponsible and self indulgent, is the
- 19:30opposite of being unstable or distracted, asleep and inactive.
- 19:37But in a positive sense, being sensible and sober minded means
- 19:41to be clear in your mind and your thought.
- 19:45It's free from clutter or pollution or distraction.
- 19:49It's to be clear headed, mentally sharp and focus, self
- 19:55controlled, self-discipline and stable so that you're always
- 20:00active and always awake, alert and in charge.
- 20:04Is to have the right thoughts about what you should do or to
- 20:09let your mind guide your body in what it does.
- 20:14Is to be sound in your thinking and in your behavior.
- 20:18And living righteously here is to have a quality or character
- 20:21of life wherein your thought and your behavior are done properly,
- 20:26correctly and justly, A pridely manner.
- 20:30It's to faithfully obey the Bible, God's Word, which is our
- 20:35standard upon which we do and know what's right.
- 20:41It's to live according to His character, God's character, his
- 20:46ways, his precepts, his will to think like God thinks, talk like
- 20:51God, and to act like God. So practically, it's to have the
- 20:56mind of Christ, godly basically is to mean that you fear and you
- 21:02reverence and love God. That's what he means to be
- 21:06godly. It's practically to have the
- 21:10mind of Christ. It's to ask yourself what and
- 21:15how did Jesus think? Not what would Jesus think, but
- 21:20what did he actually think? How did he actually think?
- 21:25That's also to do the deeds and commandments of Christ.
- 21:28What did Jesus do? Not, would not, what would Jesus
- 21:32do? What?
- 21:32What did actually he do? What did he do?
- 21:36What did Jesus do? And it's in Scripture, right?
- 21:40So you see, God's grace of salvation in Jesus Christ is
- 21:44transforming. We are no longer slaves to sin.
- 21:49Instead, we are now slaves to righteousness.
- 21:52It's Romans 618 that indicates to us, you know, the Holy Spirit
- 21:58drives us now. That means our lives are driven
- 22:02by the fruit of the Spirit as we can see in Galatians 522 to 23,
- 22:08which includes Lovejoy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness,
- 22:14faithfulness and self-control. So God's grace trains us to live
- 22:19sensibly, righteously and godly in the present age.
- 22:24We are to be like Christ right now.
- 22:28Right now. You see, in the climate that we
- 22:31live in, there is much need indications for true Christians
- 22:37to be Christians. It's easy to coin to be a
- 22:40Christian. The fact could mean you claim to
- 22:45be a Christian. A sicker could claim to be a
- 22:47Christian. But in this pressing age, we
- 22:54need to be known as people who deny ungodliness and go by what
- 23:00the word of God says regarding true righteousness.
- 23:05You see, as believers and as Christians, we have been changed
- 23:10and that there are things that we no longer think or desire
- 23:16anymore. There are things that we don't
- 23:18do anymore. We are now taking after Christ's
- 23:23name, right? That's why we call ourselves
- 23:26Christian after Christ. We're miniature versions of
- 23:34Christ. We're the proteges of Christ,
- 23:39this present corrupt and morally bankrupt age.
- 23:44We're walking and living differently.
- 23:48We have a different path. And that brings us to the third
- 23:52phase of the program of grace, which is to give hope a future
- 23:57glory. You see, while God's grace in
- 24:00Christ trains us to pursue Christ's likeness in the present
- 24:04age, God's grace also trains US, verse 13, to be looking for the
- 24:12blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God
- 24:16and Savior Christ Jesus. And what we're looking for here,
- 24:21again, it's not something that's lost.
- 24:24No, we're looking for it in expectation.
- 24:27We're looking for it with great diligence.
- 24:31We're looking forward to it with watchfulness and great
- 24:35excitement. See the praise, the blessed
- 24:40hope, and the appearing of the glory of our great God and
- 24:43Savior Christ. Jesus refers basically to the
- 24:49resurrection of our bodies, the resurrection of our bodies.
- 24:53And when the Lord Jesus Christ returns to establish his reign
- 24:58on earth, to establish his Kingdom, that's what's going to
- 25:02that's what he's going to do, give us glorified bodies fit for
- 25:10that Kingdom. So you notice how Paul
- 25:14attributes God and Savior to Jesus Christ because he is,
- 25:17right, Jesus Christ is God. And by the way, if you're
- 25:24talking to a Mormon or Jehovah's Witness, whether God is or
- 25:29whether Jesus is God, this is a great text to point them
- 25:32towards, right? Because here is it's
- 25:35specifically spelled out, right, the God and Savior Jesus Christ.
- 25:43And we know that he's God because from John one, we know
- 25:46him to be the word who was with God, who was God, right?
- 25:52And John 5858, the Lord claimed that He was before Abraham,
- 25:57before Abraham was alive. He said, I am claiming that he
- 26:03is Yahweh himself. That and that He existed before
- 26:06Abraham was. And that's a claim to His
- 26:09preexistence, His deity, his eternality.
- 26:15That's why his enemies wanted to disown him.
- 26:18They knew what He was claiming preexistence eternally.
- 26:23That means he's God. And then John 1030, He claims
- 26:27equality with the essence of the Father.
- 26:31If he is of the same essence as the Father, which no one had
- 26:34claimed, it only means that he's also God right now.
- 26:41That he's great just means that he is immense.
- 26:44He's magnanimous, incomparable in his character, majesty and
- 26:51power. Just as the Father is great and
- 26:54his name, Jesus means God saves the title.
- 26:58Christ means the Messiah, the anointed Savior and king.
- 27:05It's not last name. It means something.
- 27:07It means the Messiah, the anointed Savior and king.
- 27:11And so we believe Christ to be God and Savior, and we're
- 27:15looking for the blessed hope of our God and Savior.
- 27:20And it's a blessed hope because it's going to be full of joy.
- 27:24It's happy, and it's a privileged moment.
- 27:28This hope is not just positive thinking or wishful thinking.
- 27:32It's something good that will happen in the future, and we can
- 27:36bank on it. It's almost as if we can grasp
- 27:40it because the God who promised it is faithful.
- 27:44It's a short promise waiting to happen.
- 27:47And John one, if you can turn there with me first.
- 27:51John 32 it says first. John 32 Beloved, now we are
- 27:58children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be.
- 28:07We know that when he appears we will be like him because we will
- 28:15see him just as he is. Peter and first Peter blesses
- 28:20God for this promise and he calls it a living hope.
- 28:25He says blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
- 28:30who according to his great mercy has caused us to be born again
- 28:35to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ
- 28:39from the dead. You see, because Jesus Christ
- 28:43rose from the dead, we will also rise from the dead.
- 28:49The blessed hope is receiving our resurrected bodies, physical
- 28:55bodies, just like the Lords. Remember, he ate after his
- 29:00resurrection. He could take on a physical
- 29:04tangible fish and eat it. It's a physical resurrected
- 29:08body. It's fit for the new heavens and
- 29:11the new earth. Paul says in Philippians
- 29:143/20/21. For our citizenship is in
- 29:18heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for our Savior, the
- 29:22Lord Christ Jesus. And then it says verse 21, who
- 29:27will transform our body of our humble state into conformity
- 29:33with the body of his glory. It's going to be our glorious
- 29:38body. You see, if you're here and you
- 29:42have ailments and sickness and weakness, our glorious body is
- 29:49the answer and the hope that we have been waiting for.
- 29:54This is why we trusted in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
- 29:58We didn't just put our faith in Him so that we would be saved
- 30:01from the judgment of God upon the wrath of our sin.
- 30:05We have trusted Christ because we hope that our bodies, the
- 30:10sinful bodies, will be resurrected someday and that
- 30:14body will no longer be susceptible to sickness, to sin,
- 30:19to weakness. We will have the body as God
- 30:27intended it for us to have, perfectly worshipping with our
- 30:33bodies, our Creator, our God, and our Savior.
- 30:42We will no longer sin. That's the answer of Pastor John
- 30:48MacArthur when he was asked, you know what?
- 30:50Do you look forward to heaven when you get there?
- 30:54The absence of sin? I mean, there's a lot of things
- 30:56that we can say, right? But are you guys in favor of
- 31:01truth and honesty? Christ Community Church, is this
- 31:07your answer as well? I know it is mine, right?
- 31:13So this blessed hope, it's worth the anticipation even in the
- 31:18midst of suffering in this evil world, because it's going to be
- 31:23full of glory, Paul says in Romans 818 to 24.
- 31:28For I consider that the sufferings of this present time
- 31:31are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is going to
- 31:35be revealed to us. For the anxious longing of
- 31:39creation waits eagerly for the revealing of the sons of God.
- 31:44We're waiting to be unveiled. We're waiting to be revealed for
- 31:48who we are really going to be. Then skipping to verse 21, Paul
- 31:53says we ourselves having the first fruits of the spirit, even
- 32:00we ourselves groan with ourselves waiting eagerly for
- 32:05our adoption, our sons. And here we go, the redemption
- 32:11of our bodies. See, we're looking forward to
- 32:14that blessed hope of our redeemed and resurrected bodies.
- 32:19For in hope Paul says verse 24, Romans 8, we have been saved.
- 32:25But hope that is seen, It's not hope for who hopes for what he
- 32:31already has or sees. But if we hope for what we do
- 32:36not see, we persevere while we wait eagerly for it.
- 32:42So we diligently and we watchfully look forward to it.
- 32:49It's going to be a blessed time when Christ returns in his
- 32:52glory. It's also going to be a time of
- 32:55glorification. We were going to be exalting in
- 33:00great joy for having followed Christ and obeyed Christ and put
- 33:06our trust and faith in him. Listen to what Paul says in
- 33:10First Corinthians 1555 to 54 to 55.
- 33:16But when his this corruptible, this earthly body puts on the
- 33:20incorruptible or heavenly body, and this mortal puts
- 33:25immortality, then we'll come about with the word that is
- 33:31written. Death is swallowed up in
- 33:34victory. Oh, death, where is your
- 33:37victory? Where is your sting?
- 33:42And several verses before that, in verse 50, Paul speaks of the
- 33:46believers immortal and resurrected bodies fit for the
- 33:50Kingdom of God. He says, now I say this,
- 33:53brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of
- 33:58God, nor does the correct corruptible inherit the
- 34:03incorruptible. And Paul again first Timothy 41,
- 34:09once Timothy to take the appearing of Christ expectedly
- 34:13and soberly. He says, I solemnly charge you
- 34:17in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who is to judge
- 34:22the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his Kingdom.
- 34:28Peter speaks of this same thought and reality in Second
- 34:33Peter chapter 3 says, But the day of the Lord will come like a
- 34:37thief, in which the heavens will pass away with the war, and the
- 34:41elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and
- 34:45its works would be found out. Since all these things are to be
- 34:50destroyed in this way, what sort of people ought to be in holy
- 34:54conduct and godliness looking for in the hastening the coming
- 35:00of the day of the Lord, because of which the heavens burning
- 35:04will be destroyed and the elements will melt with intense
- 35:08heat. But according to His promise,
- 35:12we're looking for the new heavens and the new earth in
- 35:16which righteousness rose. You see, this blessed hope of
- 35:22having our immortal bodies fit for the new heavens and the
- 35:27earth is something it's going to be undescribable.
- 35:35It's like living the life that we have now, but without the
- 35:40presence of sin, only righteousness and perfect
- 35:45worship of our Lord, God and Creator.
- 35:52And it would be irresponsible to me if I don't talk about the
- 35:58immortal bodies that are also going to be given those who do
- 36:02not trust in Christ. You see, because just as there
- 36:08is the resurrection body that will be given to those who trust
- 36:15in Christ, there will also be a resurrection body that will be
- 36:20given to those who oppose God and call it the gospel.
- 36:28In John 525 to 29, it says the Lord is speaking here truly,
- 36:33truly. I say to you, an hour is coming,
- 36:36and now is when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of
- 36:39God, and those who hear will live.
- 36:44For just as the Father has life in himself, Even so He gave the
- 36:48Son also to have life in himself, and He gave Him
- 36:52authority to execute judgment, because He is the Son of man.
- 36:58Do not marvel at this for an hour's coming in which all who
- 37:03are in the tombs will hear His voice, and we'll come forth.
- 37:08Those who did the good deeds through a resurrection of life,
- 37:15and those who committed the evil deeds through a resurrection of
- 37:19judgment. Doing good deeds is a reflection
- 37:24of trust in Christ, and doing evil deeds deeds is a reflection
- 37:29of rejecting Christ. So the righteous will be
- 37:33resurrected, the wicked will also be resurrected.
- 37:38Two kinds of resurrection, both eternal but different
- 37:44environment. See Matthew 2546.
- 37:48The Lord talks about how wicked people will go into eternal
- 37:51punishment and Hebrews 1027, the author of that book, it speaks
- 38:01of how for those who reject the gospel and continue in sinning
- 38:05that there will be a terrifying expectation of judgement and
- 38:09fury of fire which will consume the adversaries.
- 38:14You see God's grace in the past. It's our justification.
- 38:20It's past oriented. It saved us from the penalty of
- 38:23sin. God's grace is also presence
- 38:27oriented. It makes us wholly set apart
- 38:31from the influence of sin now. And God's grace is future
- 38:36oriented in that it will glorify our bodies when the Lord
- 38:40returns, and it's ultimately going to set us free from this
- 38:44body of sin, from the presence of sin.
- 38:48So question is, has God really forgiven you of your sins?
- 38:55Does God really save you from His holy, just and righteous
- 39:01penalty of it? Is there a struggle, a fight and
- 39:07victory over the sin that entices you?
- 39:14Do you progress in becoming more like Christ, in your stature, in
- 39:18your character, in your thoughts, in your speech, and in
- 39:23your actions? Do you long for the future glory
- 39:27of Christ? Or are you so much caught up
- 39:30with what's going on in the world?
- 39:33Do you long to see Christ? See, today is the day of
- 39:37salvation. Wake up.
- 39:40Wake up from your stupor. Make sure you grasp the program
- 39:47of God's grace. So we've seen that God's grace
- 39:52came in the person of Jesus Christ with the program to save,
- 39:57to sanctify, and to give hope. That's the program of grace.
- 40:01And that leads us to the third reality of God's grace, third
- 40:05reality of God's grace, which is the people of God's grace.
- 40:10See verse 14. Paul describes how the person of
- 40:12God's grace gave himself for us. Jesus Christ is the one who gave
- 40:20himself for us. Christ gave his life for us.
- 40:27We are the undeserved, unworthy recipients of God's grace.
- 40:35We are privileged. We are the privileged recipient
- 40:39of God's grace. You see, that Christ gave
- 40:42himself points to the reality that He gave His life as a
- 40:48sacrifice before God. That's the primary reason why He
- 40:52came the first time. In Matthew 20/20/28 He says that
- 40:57the Son of Man did not come to say to be served, but to serve
- 41:03and to give His life as a ransom for many.
- 41:08He gave His life as a ransom, a ransom for us as part of that
- 41:14many. But why would Christ sacrifice
- 41:19himself for us? Why would He do that?
- 41:22Now look at verse 14. And here's the purpose.
- 41:27In order to redeem us from every lawless deed, and to purify for
- 41:31himself a people, for his own possession, zealous for good
- 41:36deeds. See, to redeem is to release
- 41:40someone from captivity with the payment of a ransom and the
- 41:47ransom prize. The price that Christ gave was
- 41:55his own blood. Think about that.
- 41:57His own blood, his own life, paid to satisfy God's
- 42:04requirement upon sin, which is perfect justice and lawlessness.
- 42:09Here basically is contempt for God's law.
- 42:14It's to act as if there's no law giver.
- 42:18It's to be indifferent about God, the law giver.
- 42:22So Christ gave himself not only to redeem us, Christ also gave
- 42:27himself for us to purify for himself a people, for his own
- 42:33possession. To purify means to cleanse or to
- 42:38make clean. And we can see this purification
- 42:42in Hebrews chapter 10 if you can turn there with me.
- 42:45Hebrews chapter 10, verses 12 to 18.
- 42:47Here we see the God the Father declares, and He judicially
- 42:54claims us as His own possession through the saving work of the
- 42:58Holy Spirit, and the Holy Spirit applying to us the saving work
- 43:04of the Son with His perfect life and His death on the on the
- 43:08cross. Hebrews 1012 to 18 reads.
- 43:13But he, referring to Christ having offered one sacrifice for
- 43:18sins for all time, sat down at the right hand of God the
- 43:22Father, waiting from that time until his enemies are put as a
- 43:26footstool for His feet. For by one offering He has
- 43:30perfected or purified for all time those who are being
- 43:35sanctified or made being or being made completely holy.
- 43:41Verse 15 And the Holy Spirit also testifies to us.
- 43:45For after saying, this is the covenant that I will make with
- 43:48them after those days, says the Lord, I will put my loss upon
- 43:53their heart and on their mind. I will write them.
- 43:57See, that's the declaration and the stamp that we know that we
- 44:01belong to God. He then says verse 17 and their
- 44:06sins and their lawlessness, they're lawless deeds.
- 44:11I will remember no more. See, God purifies us from our
- 44:18sins and not only that, he claims us as his own.
- 44:24It's one thing to be considered not a Sinner, but it's another
- 44:30to be considered as righteous and part of God's family.
- 44:38Of course, this this claim is something that God had planned
- 44:45and prepared for even before the foundation of the world.
- 44:49Listen to what Paul says in Ephesians 1, four to seven.
- 44:52He says that God chose us in him in Christ before the foundation
- 44:57of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before him in
- 45:01love by by predestining predestining us to do adoption a
- 45:08sons through Christ Jesus to himself according to the good
- 45:12pleasure of his will, to the praise of the glory of his grace
- 45:16which he graciously bestowed on us in the Beloved.
- 45:21In him we have the redemption through his blood, the
- 45:25forgiveness of our sins, the forgiveness of our
- 45:29transgressions according to the riches of his grace.
- 45:34And now look again at verse 14 of our text, Titus 2, verse 14.
- 45:40Christ gave Himself for us to redeem us, to purify us, and to
- 45:46make us His own, and to make us zealous for good works, zealous
- 45:52for good works. Being zealous is just being
- 45:56overly passionate, overly excited about something.
- 46:02And in Christ, God makes us to be passionate about good works,
- 46:06doing good deeds, doing everything that we can to make
- 46:10everyone's lives better, right? To improve their condition.
- 46:16And this reality, of course, is again planned by God.
- 46:19It's not an accident. It's not an accidental plan.
- 46:23Ephesians 28 says that we are the workmanship of God, created
- 46:28in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so
- 46:33that we would walk in them. You notice that prepared
- 46:38beforehand so that we will, we would walk in them.
- 46:41We're not doing good works so that we might be saved.
- 46:45No, we are saved so that we would do good works.
- 46:52So I see Christ gave himself for us so that we would become God's
- 46:56redeemed people, God's purified people, God's own people, and
- 47:04God's zealous people. Where are the people of God's
- 47:09grace? See, as God's redeemed people,
- 47:15have you truly been saved from your sin?
- 47:19As God's beautified people, are you walking and and and living
- 47:26in holiness? As God's own people, do you
- 47:33consider yourself as a slave of your master?
- 47:37Do you obey the gracious Master? As God zealous people, are you
- 47:44really excited to do what's good to everyone?
- 47:49And do you do it for the glory of Christ?
- 47:53So we've seen God's grace has appeared in the person of the
- 47:58Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. We've seen that the program of
- 48:02disgrace is saved to sanctify and to give the hope of glory.
- 48:08And we've seen that the people of grace are redeemed, purified,
- 48:15owned, and made zealous for good works.
- 48:18I pray that we here at Christ's community would be able to
- 48:22identify with that as God's people of grace, zealous to do
- 48:30good to everyone, as people who have the experience and are
- 48:33living out the program of God's grace, people who love and long
- 48:39for the person of God's grace, our Lord and Savior of Jesus
- 48:43Christ. I pray that our lives would
- 48:47showcase the richness, the richness of this grace because
- 48:52God deserves the glory. Amen.
- 48:55Amen. Let's pray Heavenly Father, I
- 48:58ask that you would do the work that only you can do through the
- 49:03word that you have inscripturated through Titus
- 49:06chapter 2 verses 1114. We ask, Holy Spirit, that you
- 49:11would cause us to treasure the truth of your grace so that we
- 49:17might be able to reflect the power of your grace that you
- 49:22have, Lord, prepared before, beforehand in the person of your
- 49:27Son, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, that we would be able to
- 49:32live out the program of that grace and that we would be truly
- 49:36a people of that grace. I pray all these things in Jesus
- 49:40name, Amen.
