- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Down in Mayberry, things are just grand.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: It's the friendliest little podcast in the land.
- 0:09SPEAKER_00: Nip it in the bud.
- 0:17SPEAKER_01: Hi everybody.
- 0:18SPEAKER_01: Welcome back to Nip It in the Bud, our Andy Griffith retrospective podcast.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: I'm Paul.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: And I'm Tim.
- 0:27SPEAKER_01: And another great episode, Tim, episode five already of season one.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Irresistible Andy.
- 0:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what a great title for this episode.
- 0:39SPEAKER_02: It's uh it definitely gets you into what the story's gonna be about.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: Uh, but but there's still some mystery, I guess you might say, about what's gonna happen in this episode.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Did you notice, Tim, that Don Knotts is back to being right after Ronnie Howard in the credits, and no Eleanor Donna you mentioned.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: How about that?
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was it might have been just a one-time thing.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: I guess we'll have to keep an eye on that in in the future episodes.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: But yeah, and of course, Don Knotts does make uh a couple fun appearances in this one, too.
- 1:21SPEAKER_02: He does.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Look forward to talking about that.
- 1:24SPEAKER_02: But it all starts off in the drugstore uh in this episode, where Andy and Ellie and her uncle Fred in the last episode, but didn't appear or all together.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: Did you notice that your Uncle Fred's been in a lot of uh film and television, and he was R.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: H.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: Macy in Miracle on 34th Street.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's where I recognized him from.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he was a good Macy, too, the way he uh you know stood up for Chris Kringle.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 2:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, he wasn't gonna knock Kris Kringle, especially when he was selling out the store at Macy's.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: But gosh, yeah, to see him in this kind of a role instead of being a a big high-powered magnate in uh miracle on 34th Street, here he is uh behind the counter at the drugstore.
- 2:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it's definitely very uh very convincing.
- 2:33SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, yeah, and he and Andy start out having a little chat about the water bottle that Andy is buying for the church picnic, or also church dance, as it uh is referred to in the episode.
- 2:50SPEAKER_02: And then who walks in but Ellie?
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: Mm-hmm.
- 2:55SPEAKER_02: And uh start having a little polite conversation, and uh she's asking what the water bottle is for, and Andy's got a good story about that.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: How about how uh they usually know who's gonna win the various events at the picnic/slash dance, and in this case, uh they're expecting the guy who's the town butcher to win.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 3:27SPEAKER_02: And because he uh spends so much time in the meat locker that uh this is actually for his wife to thaw him out a little bit, right, before he goes to bed.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: And you're right about that with the picnic dance, because I at first I I I thought, well, this is a picnic, and then it's like this is a dance, so it's both.
- 3:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 3:53SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 3:54SPEAKER_02: Interesting.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: So and small town life, that that doesn't surprise me, but I read a few of the online comments of people complaining about, well, they go back and forth between dance and picnic, and like, get over it.
- 4:09SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 4:12SPEAKER_02: But but I mean that's that's what really drives the rest of the story, then, because Ellie had come out from the back room, and after she says her hellos and finds out about the water bottle, she goes back, and Andy and Fred start having a conversation, and uh, because uh Ellie had said she was not planning to go to the picnic, which was interesting, and I think Andy got kind of studying about that, as he would say, and talking with Fred.
- 4:47SPEAKER_02: How how is it that such a pretty young woman like Ellie is not going to the picnic?
- 4:57SPEAKER_02: And uh and Fred is kind of he's not exactly egging him on, but he's saying, Well, you know, she's new in town and all this and that.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: Nobody's asked her yet.
- 5:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Andy's interested, so he thinks about it for a minute and then decides to walk in the back room after he finishes up with Fred.
- 5:20SPEAKER_02: And he he goes into what I always love, uh, where he's supposing this and seeing this now that, uh, as he's trying to ask Ellie to the dance.
- 5:33SPEAKER_02: And she's she's very nice about it, but she finally helps him get over the hump by saying, I'd I'd love to go to the dance with you, Andy.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: She's all ready for that.
- 5:45SPEAKER_01: You could tell she was very uh uh easy person to ask out for sure, because she she kind of switched that around and and uh was just waiting for him to bring it up.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: And but I can certainly remember being in the position of Andy trying to ask somebody out for uh date or whatever, and how awkward that can be.
- 6:15SPEAKER_02: So for Andy to get a little help from Ellie, I thought was great.
- 6:20SPEAKER_02: I could have used that myself.
- 6:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: He was pleasantly surprised when she kind of she eased uh the situation by by uh you know ask kind of asking him.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that really sets up the nuts scene where we're at Andy's house, and Andy's sitting on the couch, and Aunt B is buzzing around getting ready for dinner, and Andy starts kind of puffing himself up talking to me.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, I just went in there and asked her and said, Would you like to go to the dance with me?
- 6:59SPEAKER_02: And she blushed and she hemmed and hawed and all this stuff.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Oh, he really brags about that total opposite of what really happened.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 7:12SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 7:13SPEAKER_02: That was hilarious, and yeah, just the whole thing he's going through about put a little talon powder around my neck and wet down my hair and all this, put a put on a nice pair of pants with a crease in it, and how all the all the women will be around him then at the dance.
- 7:38SPEAKER_01: It's so on future Andy, you know, that he's talking like that.
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: It's it's funny to see that he's you know worried about what he's gonna wear, and uh that like in future seasons, uh he would never talk like that.
- 7:54SPEAKER_01: So it's kind of fun to watch.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: It is, it is, yeah.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: He he hasn't quite turned into the character that we get to know probably after the first season's over.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 8:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he he's talking, talking, and Aunt B is trying to, in a way, I guess, try and straighten him out and say, no, that's not how it happened, remember?
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: Yes, he he just kind of has got the wind behind him on this, and then he gets sort of studying about it, and you can see the wheel starting to turn when he thinks, oh, wait a minute, I didn't actually ask her.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: She more like asked me, and then he gets on a roll about that, yes.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: And and I and I made a note um uh it's of myself here when that happened.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Who cares?
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: Go with her.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you know, get over yourself, man.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's right.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: Pretty lucky guy you're right there, but no, he's he's worked himself into a lather and he starts tucking.
- 9:18SPEAKER_02: It's almost like a church revival there, about all of a sudden, and wham, she hooked me like a starving catfish.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: Where this is gonna end, matrimony, yes, like man, it just snowballed uh so much.
- 9:39SPEAKER_02: And I don't know if you remember this episode, we haven't talked about this one yet, but uh I'm not sure exactly when it comes along either.
- 9:48SPEAKER_02: But this one, this time he's doing it all himself.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: But in a later episode, I think when uh Miss Peggy is the romantic interest, I think it's Floyd, and and maybe possibly with help from Barney, is talking him into how all of what they're doing is leading to him changing his mailbox.
- 10:19SPEAKER_02: The handy tailor.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: And uh they're getting inside of his head, but here it's all it's all self-driven.
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: Yes, yeah, right.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: You know, and that kind of happens in um Opie's three wishes, too, when Barney's trying to tell everybody they're gonna be getting married, and and uh so yeah, you that's that's a good point.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: There's a history of uh them all kind of trying to fix Andy up.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:53SPEAKER_02: All this kind of comes to a head then when Opie comes into the living room and he's got an ice cream that he got from Miss Ellie at the drugstore.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: And he and Opie likes her pretty fine, he says.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he likes that's a good line.
- 11:17SPEAKER_02: Oh man, I love that whole bit about how uh she asked him whether it was his birthday, and he said, I don't rightly know.
- 11:26SPEAKER_02: And she says, to be on the safe side, maybe I ought to give you your present now.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: Andy just thinks that that is uh another example of her laying the groundwork for for marriage here.
- 11:41SPEAKER_02: So this all is is setting things up where Andy is saying, Oh, I know what's going on here.
- 11:51SPEAKER_02: She is this ice cream is gonna be a down payment on a husband.
- 11:58SPEAKER_02: Now she's a desperate hunter, and that uh what he needs to do is put her on to the scent of other game.
- 12:10SPEAKER_02: And and meanwhile, Opie and Aunt B are there to hear all this, which turns out to be important as we Yeah, it's too bad Opie was there to hear it.
- 12:24SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, but but cut from then the living room, and you see Andy going around town, and he's talking to some other young guys, Pete and Franklin and Charlie, about some of their I guess characteristics, and how supposedly Ellie had mentioned them to Andy, like with Pete Johnson or Franklin Pomeroy.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: But but all that is very short and sweet, where you see him around town talking to these different fellows, who I don't remember ever seeing again.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: I don't either.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: That's so true.
- 13:11SPEAKER_01: Who are these these young guys in town?
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: Maybe they got drafted or something.
- 13:20SPEAKER_02: Maybe.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we uh I I certainly don't remember seeing them, but they the writers needed somebody, some some other competition for Andy, or somebody else, as he would say, to put her on the scent of other game.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: Which kind of leads us into the next bit of the show or the episode where uh Ellie's in the drugstore and in walks Pete Johnson, who Andy had said that uh Ellie thought he had such beautiful long eyelashes.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: And so the whole time he's talking with Ellie, all the time talking with Ellie, he's blinking his eyebrows.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 14:10SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, and then Franklin comes in, and his characteristic is his cute nose, and he's winking his nose at her all the time.
- 14:24SPEAKER_02: And finally Charlie comes in while the other two are there, starts flexing his muscles.
- 14:32SPEAKER_01: That's a good one when she sees a crew like that.
- 14:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, but it's also cringe worthy.
- 14:38SPEAKER_02: I don't know if you but oh my gosh.
- 14:43SPEAKER_02: It was almost hard to watch them, and she is just totally baffled by the whole thing.
- 14:50SPEAKER_02: Why are these guys in here?
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: And uh Uncle Fred finally comes out of the back room and breaks it up.
- 14:59SPEAKER_02: He's like, What in the world is going on here?
- 15:03SPEAKER_02: And she explains, I have no idea, Uncle Fred.
- 15:07SPEAKER_02: They just came in and started twitching.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: Ellie is wondering what happened?
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Who why did these guys come in?
- 15:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: And then here comes Opie.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Yes, he's he's got his dime with him, and all becomes clear once Opie starts talking.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's forced to, he's been told he has to pay now.
- 15:38SPEAKER_01: No freebies.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: And you can just hear him echoing everything Andy said earlier about down payment on the husband.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: And are you a desperate hunter?
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: Yes, Ellie.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, and you can just see the fog begin to clear for Ellie there, too.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: That now she realizes why those guys were there and what's going on.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: Because the last thing Opie told her about was uh Andy saying the only way to deal with the desperate hunter is to put her on the scent of other game.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: And that's when he asks her, Miss Ellie, are you a desperate hunter?
- 16:26SPEAKER_02: Yes, because if you are, I know where you could get a possum.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: And she she responds, No, I'm on the trail of a baboon.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: Right at that point.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: And Opie really remembered every detail.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Oh just so perfect because that's how kids are.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: They're just so honest, you know.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: They're gonna, you know, you gotta watch what you say around them, and and uh they're gonna repeat it.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: And uh he sure did.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: And Ellie was really good at uh you know getting the info out of them too.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 17:12unknown: Right.
- 17:12SPEAKER_01: Begging them on to tell her more.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because once she starts uh it starts to dawn on her what's happening, she wants to know more.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: Just like you said, yeah.
- 17:30SPEAKER_02: And the next thing we see then, this was probably after a commercial break, is uh you hear Andy coming into the drugstore, and Ellie and Fred are in the back, and Fred's gonna go out and wait on him, but instead Ellie says, No, I will go out.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: And she she just plays it to the hilt.
- 17:54SPEAKER_02: She comes on strong about Andy Honey and Sheriff Honey and all this kind of stuff, getting up real close to him, putting her arms around him.
- 18:06SPEAKER_02: And it it's just great to see what she's got in mind for Andy.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's not someone it turns out that you want to you want to get angry.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: Especially being a pharmacist, uh, that'd be a that's it turns out to be a big mistake.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: That's uh it turns out to be a big mistake because she says, I'm gonna fix a special soda for you, my sheriff honey.
- 18:38SPEAKER_02: And you can see her kind of mixing mixing up, and uh for anybody who uh is younger than us, they're probably not even gonna remember the idea of a soda shop where those kind of drinks would be made to order instead of coming out of a can.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: But she's putting it together, and then what you see is her reaching under the counter and getting a few extra special ingredients like mustard and castor oil, and she's pouring all that in there while she's making Google eyes at Andy, and then he then she gives it to him, and he almost explodes.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm sure most uh also anyone younger wouldn't know what castor oil is.
- 19:31SPEAKER_01: You don't hear about that as often.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: No, but bad taste.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Bad taste.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: Oh man, yeah.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: And it makes you wondering now, now he's a sheriff and she's a pharmacist, and she's kind of though it's not gonna kill him, she's poisoning his drink, right?
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: It's and somehow that's okay by her to help uh uh I give him a Micka Mickey here.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Slip him in a Mickey.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Once she does, and he he just stands up, his head's about to explode, and he says, What are you trying to do?
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: Poison me?
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: And then she tells him off, but good.
- 20:17SPEAKER_02: She does.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh, she just lets him have it, which I thought was pretty interesting for uh 1960 for a woman to be telling the guy off like that.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'll tell you, I'm not used to seeing Andy talk to like that.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, she really let him have it.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: And she she finishes up by saying, I wouldn't go to the dance with you if you're the last man on earth, and instead I'm gonna go with the first single unattached man who walks through that door.
- 20:57SPEAKER_02: And who comes in but Barney?
- 21:00SPEAKER_02: Yes perfect, perfect, and he just he looks totally uh she says something like, Have you got a date for the dance on Saturday?
- 21:13SPEAKER_02: And he says, No.
- 21:14SPEAKER_02: And she says, Well, I accept your invitation, and he just looks completely dumbfounded.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Like, I just came in here for foot powder, yeah.
- 21:27SPEAKER_01: Foot powder, that's the best.
- 21:31SPEAKER_01: And you know, that's I thought, wow, Barney really changed a lot in future years.
- 21:36SPEAKER_01: He would always have a date, whether it's Thomalu or Juanita.
- 21:41SPEAKER_01: He'd have somebody, uh so I was surprised when he said he didn't have a date.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: But um, how lucky is he that that she asks him and he gets to go with Eleanor Donahue.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, pretty nice.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: Pretty nice.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: And uh Yeah.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: And he's just kind of on the receiving end of all that outrage she had after she tells Andy off.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: But the next thing we see is outside Andy's house on the front porch where he and Aunt B are chatting.
- 22:18SPEAKER_02: And uh up walks Barney in his salt and pepper suit.
- 22:22SPEAKER_02: And I think that's the first time we've seen that in the show.
- 22:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: He looked good.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, that was always his kind of go-to shoot suit.
- 22:32SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 22:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and the conversation that Andy and Aunt B were having was about how Andy, I think, was starting to feel bad or apologetic about the way he had handled the whole thing with Ellie.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: And Aunt B's trying to tell him that, well, if you went over there and talked to her, you could probably sort it out.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: But uh Andy said, Well, she's already got this date with Barney, and and so Aunt B says, Well, you are his boss after that.
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, how about that?
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: She's Aunt B's a little conniving there.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Uh conniving, yeah.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: Getting him to use his uh you know, his boss powers to uh you know to control what Barney does in his private life.
- 23:31SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, and Andy realizes it.
- 23:33SPEAKER_02: He said, Oh, can't be for shame.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: He also uh figures out a perfect plan that he without telling Barney you can't go, he figures a perfect if you're gonna ever get Barney to uh not want to go to uh something, the way he did it's perfect.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: I think that was the era of reverse psychology, right?
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 24:04SPEAKER_02: We're saying, oh no, we'll be fine.
- 24:07SPEAKER_02: I was thinking about having some we need somebody to direct traffic, and uh well, I'll just swear in a temporary deputy like Jeff Pritchard, but then he goes on to say, or or Barney says something like, Yeah, I suppose he he won't mess it up too bad, but then and it goes on uh goes on from there, but yeah, it's too bad he'll probably get the citation, and that's what really perks Barney's ears up.
- 24:44SPEAKER_01: It does that and pickpockets when Barney realizes there's an opportunity to catch pick.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: I guess they got a big pickpocket problem in Mayberry.
- 24:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, at first Barney says, in Mayberry, but then Andy says, Well, you know, people gonna be coming in from all over the county, pockets full of money, and you can see the wheels turning and uh and he still hasn't Andy still hasn't done anything to say, well, maybe you better do it.
- 25:22SPEAKER_02: He's letting Barney figure it out, and Barney's about to go off and go to pick up Ellie for the dance, but he finally says, No, you can't do that to me, Andy.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: I want that citation.
- 25:39SPEAKER_01: And you know, this is uh interesting because in in like starting, I don't know if it's starting in season two, but in future seasons, Andy kind of goes out of his way to build Barney up, you know, like any anything that makes Barney look bad, Andy's kind of setting up a scene where uh or a situation where Barney comes out looking good.
- 26:06SPEAKER_01: And it's just funny, in this early season, Andy would kind of do that to his best friend and cousin and cousin.
- 26:16SPEAKER_01: You know, right trick him like that.
- 26:20SPEAKER_01: Uh he could you know be the one to you know win out by getting the date.
- 26:27SPEAKER_02: Exactly, exactly.
- 26:29SPEAKER_02: And yeah, that's that's sort of how the show evolved, I guess.
- 26:35SPEAKER_02: That you and I did have seen that kind of exchange later on.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: But here in the early days, yeah, uh, just kind of helps to move things along by Andy uh trying to get Barney interested in something uh like this.
- 26:57SPEAKER_02: So that's pretty interesting to see how it is in this episode versus sometime later.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: But that's when uh things all kind of come to a head.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: Next thing we see is uh inside Ellie's house, and she's getting a call from Barney, and he's saying he can't go to the dance.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: And there's some funny bits there too, where she's saying pickpockets and over and out to you too, I guess.
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: So you can kind of imagine what Barney's saying on the other side, and it's all pretty funny, you know.
- 27:40SPEAKER_01: And that's I I always like that on shows when somebody's doing that and you don't get to see the other person talking to them.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: That's hard to do, you know, to pull off that conversation because I'm sure she's really not talking to them, you know, when they're filming that.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, when she repeated some of those lines, they could just picture Barty saying that.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: That is so good.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and uh I'm sure you know who would think of this too, but my favorite guy for that, who is probably the best ever, was Bob Newhart.
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Oh, absolutely.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: Doing the one-sided phone conversation, and like you say, there is so much imagination that goes into that.
- 28:27SPEAKER_02: I think that's where uh watching an episode like that, you your own wheels start turning a lot too, because you're hearing the one side of the conversation, but your imagination is also realizing what's being said on the other side.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: And maybe that's part what part of what makes those so funny.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 28:52SPEAKER_02: Is hearing the one side and then realizing what the uh was said on the other side.
- 28:59SPEAKER_02: Agreed.
- 29:00SPEAKER_02: Agreed.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: It does take something to some good acting, some good writing to really pull that off.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: Yes, it does.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: And she did a great job with it, I thought.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she did.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: You just felt like you knew that was she was talking to Barney, no doubt about it.
- 29:19SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: And the next thing we hear is a knock at the door.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: And after she gets off with Barney, and uh, I can't tell if she looked like she was terribly disappointed or not, but she was definitely understanding.
- 29:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, didn't seem like she was totally upset.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: But then when she goes to answer the door and it turns out to be Andy, she doesn't want to have anything to do with it.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: And he he tries to talk about uh how he heard that Barney wasn't gonna be able to take her to the dance, which had just happened, of course.
- 30:09SPEAKER_02: And uh and she closes the door right in his face after he says a few words, which which was kind of funny.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and then he knocks again, and she listens to a little bit more and closes the door again, and and at this point she's finally starting to smile about it, waiting to see if he's gonna knock the door again, knock at the door again, and he does.
- 30:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she was hoping for sure.
- 30:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: Like, uh huh, I wonder how this is gonna end.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: I thought and and then uh she she laughs a little and smiles, I think, at that point.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: Uh and I I thought she actually let Andy off pretty easy because none of it really sounded like an apology about the way it acted before.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: But she tells him, I uh, well, I'm sorry, Andy, I actually had a second date lined up for this dance, and so I'm not gonna be able to go with you.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: And and so that puts us all in the mind of well, who could that be?
- 31:29SPEAKER_02: Is it one of the three guys who were at the drugstore that day?
- 31:34SPEAKER_02: And lo and behold, what happens?
- 31:40SPEAKER_02: Here he comes.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: Here he comes.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Here comes Lil Opie, just turned out uh just as cute as can be with his little hat, and he's got his gingham shirt on, and he's carrying a handful of flowers.
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: He he said, uh, and it turns out he's the date.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's the date.
- 32:06SPEAKER_02: And and he kind of gets a kick out of it, I think.
- 32:12SPEAKER_02: But Opie is just so cute again, as usual.
- 32:18SPEAKER_02: Where he's uh there and he says, Paul, you ought to get a date for the dance.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: And uh, but but I think at that point Eleanor Donahue uh has forgiven him, and she says to Opie, Well, I think maybe for uh a young fellow like you, we shouldn't go to the dance on chaperone.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: And that's where Andy pipes up and says, Well, as the boy's father, I would be okay if you were escorted by the local sheriff.
- 32:57SPEAKER_02: Which also turns out to be Andy, of course.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:04SPEAKER_01: It was a nice kind of resolution to the all the calamity there over.
- 33:12SPEAKER_02: It was.
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, good good stuff there, good kind of heartwarming ending to the to the main part of the story, but we still have the epilogue.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: The little last bit where uh you see again it sort of ends out in the streets of Mayberry between the courthouse and the drugstore, where Andy is driven up and he's out in the street, and Ellie calls him over saying, I've got a bit of a problem here, Andy.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: And uh he goes in and finds out that there they all are again.
- 33:55SPEAKER_02: The three guys, Pete and Franklin and Charlie, all twitching.
- 34:02SPEAKER_01: The three stooges, I made a note.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: The three stooges.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: There they are.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and and what kind of uh kicked it up for me was then Andy went over and joined him.
- 34:17SPEAKER_01: Yes, he really did belong.
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: That was uh that was a good surprise that he would do that and made it a lot of fun.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: He did, and I'll tell you something too.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: I uh I'm sure you noticed this.
- 34:34SPEAKER_01: This the uh applause meter then took off with the fake audience after when Andy did that, they just cheered and cheered that episode.
- 34:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's great, that's great.
- 34:50SPEAKER_02: And that does seem to be a recurring theme at the end of the episodes where you get that strong uh crowd reaction, canned laughter.
- 35:00SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: I made a note here, Tim, on this one that Opie stole this episode.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Oh, he did.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he was all up.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: He was.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, when you think about he initially has that ice cream cone and and the ice, you know, she's pretty, you know, his his different comments, somebody likes her pretty fine, and then he he's the one that spills the beans by going back to Ellie and telling her every word for word what Eddie said, and then he's her date then for the picnic slash dance.
- 35:40SPEAKER_01: And uh yeah, he's kind of he fits in at all the right moments and kind of like anybody watching, you have to you know get a chuckle out of that, just because he's just like a you know, at this point, he's just a good kid, too.
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: Like it's he's not uh he's not gonna go and pull a prank and you know do something like on some of the other shows of the time where you know you kind of laugh, but you also think, wow, that kid's bad.
- 36:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's bad news.
- 36:11SPEAKER_02: But yeah, it could have almost been titled Irresistible Opie.
- 36:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, as you say it.
- 36:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, because he was he was irresistible in this and and really was a key character.
- 36:27SPEAKER_02: Uh-huh.
- 36:29SPEAKER_02: Played much more of a role than uh Barney or Aunt B in this episode, uh, which was mostly about Ellie and Andy, but like you said, Opie definitely stole this episode.
- 36:44SPEAKER_02: He was he was what really made it fun.
- 36:48SPEAKER_02: Really enjoyed that episode.
- 36:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I did too.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: So we're humming along with talking about OP for episode six.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: What do we have?
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: Episode six is gonna be the runaway kid.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: And we'll teaser about that.
- 37:06SPEAKER_02: Uh again, this is another episode where Opie plays a key role.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 37:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's he's already kind of threatened to run away once before.
- 37:20SPEAKER_01: Remember what the new housekeeper episode.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: Andy, Andy actually had to tell him how he should do it.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: So this'll be fun to see what you know what happens in this one.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, uh, I think we're gonna love this one too, Paul.
- 37:37SPEAKER_02: And I hope anybody listening is gonna tune in for that one.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: Don't want and just remember, Aunt Roe was right.
- 37:45SPEAKER_01: Too much TV, but hey, it's good TV.
- 37:49SPEAKER_01: That's a mean thing.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: It's good TV.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: It's not too much when it's good TV.
- 37:54SPEAKER_02: Hey, really enjoyed it, Paul.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: Looking forward to the next one.
