- 0:29Speaker 1: All right, welcome to Table Talk here at the Philadelphia
- 0:31Speaker 1: Sports Table podcast show, the longest running weekly Philly sports
- 0:34Speaker 1: podcast show in the world twelve years strong. Got a great,
- 0:38Speaker 1: great discussion coming your way this week as we embark
- 0:42Speaker 1: on a post mortem with regard to the Philadelphia Phillies,
- 0:45Speaker 1: and we're doing it with our good buddy John Janssen
- 0:49Speaker 1: from Fox Sports Phillies The Gambler. We love talking to
- 0:53Speaker 1: him about the world of Philly sports when he's able
- 0:55Speaker 1: to join us. John, my friend, Thank you so much
- 0:57Speaker 1: for taking the time, my friend.
- 0:59Speaker 2: Yeah, thanks for and yes, you can see I'm sitting
- 1:01Speaker 2: on the floor. I got a blanket on.
- 1:03Speaker 3: I'm like ready, it's this is a tough conversations, right,
- 1:06Speaker 3: so I had to make sure I was like as
- 1:08Speaker 3: comfortable as I could possibly be.
- 1:10Speaker 1: You gotta be comfy for this type of conversation. Seriously,
- 1:13Speaker 1: we'rej's right now. I'm a candle lip.
- 1:15Speaker 4: I love it, right, got the vibes going.
- 1:18Speaker 1: I genuinely was thinking, for those watching on YouTube right now,
- 1:22Speaker 1: I can say wearing a Philly shirt. I'm like because
- 1:24Speaker 1: I usually, like, whatever whatever team we're talking about, I'm
- 1:26Speaker 1: usually wearing some sort of apparel from them, and I'm like,
- 1:29Speaker 1: I just don't want to put on the Philly shirt,
- 1:31Speaker 1: but I'm like, I'm gonna do it just because I
- 1:32Speaker 1: continue to do it here when we're doing video.
- 1:34Speaker 4: There you go.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I love the winning team, the team that likes to
- 1:37Speaker 3: win around here exactly.
- 1:39Speaker 1: We talked about them on the show this past week
- 1:41Speaker 1: when in the supporter shield. Very nice, very nice. I
- 1:44Speaker 1: love the hat. Dude looks nice. Thank you looks very nice. Well,
- 1:48Speaker 1: we got to get into into the Phillies here again.
- 1:51Speaker 1: That's why I wanted to bring you on because like
- 1:53Speaker 1: I'm still just so downtrodden and it's not even how
- 1:58Speaker 1: it ended. Sure, you know, Oriyan kirkerng completely bungled the
- 2:03Speaker 1: end of that last game of the season in the
- 2:06Speaker 1: NLDS against the Dodgers. But like the real story, I
- 2:10Speaker 1: think for a lot of us, I mean, you know myself,
- 2:12Speaker 1: I'm right there is the fact that Trey Turner, Kyle Schwarber,
- 2:16Speaker 1: Bryce Harper from an offensive perspective, just didn't do anything
- 2:20Speaker 1: offensively for this team when the team absolutely needed them.
- 2:24Speaker 1: They were cold at the plate at the worst possible time,
- 2:28Speaker 1: sometimes just swinging it junk too, which was so incredibly
- 2:32Speaker 1: frustrating given who these guys are and the talent that
- 2:35Speaker 1: they possessed. John, So I'm andre, have you been thinking
- 2:38Speaker 1: about this narrative as well? As we're now more than
- 2:41Speaker 1: a few days removed from that debacle of a series,
- 2:44Speaker 1: would have been your thoughts here?
- 2:46Speaker 3: Yeah, And look, there were some good performers in the lineup.
- 2:48Speaker 3: It's not to say everybody was terrible, but I feel
- 2:52Speaker 3: like every time a moment presented itself, a moment to
- 2:55Speaker 3: do something big, change a game, change a series.
- 2:58Speaker 2: They just never do it.
- 3:00Speaker 3: And they did it way too late in Game three,
- 3:03Speaker 3: but they could just never do it. So the Ryan
- 3:06Speaker 3: Kirkering thing, it sucks that he has to be kind
- 3:08Speaker 3: of the face of that moment because of what he did,
- 3:12Speaker 3: and it was a big spotlight. The throw is really bad,
- 3:14Speaker 3: The decision making was really bad, and he owned it,
- 3:17Speaker 3: and I feel bad for him again that he has
- 3:19Speaker 3: to be like kind of the face of.
- 3:21Speaker 2: This image and narrative of the Phillies.
- 3:23Speaker 3: But it was everyone like it was kind of a
- 3:26Speaker 3: capture of what the Phillies were in that postseason. Anytime
- 3:29Speaker 3: there was a chance to make a big play that
- 3:31Speaker 3: couldn't do it, And that's something that has been happening
- 3:34Speaker 3: since last season in the postseason. It happened again this year.
- 3:37Speaker 3: And so a team that went to the World Series
- 3:38Speaker 3: because it really timely hits, timely home runs just isn't
- 3:43Speaker 3: isn't getting that anymore in the postseason. So I think, look,
- 3:47Speaker 3: a lot of that has to go to Kylee Schuerer,
- 3:48Speaker 3: Bryce Harper, Tray Turner because they're making the most money
- 3:50Speaker 3: to me, And I know Shuerber had a couple of
- 3:53Speaker 3: home runs, and yeah, that one game that was really good,
- 3:56Speaker 3: but he was the best player they've had all season,
- 3:59Speaker 3: and he's been a top three to four hitter in baseball.
- 4:01Speaker 2: They needed a lot more from him than just one game. Absolutely,
- 4:05Speaker 2: that was really disappointing to see him.
- 4:06Speaker 1: Because he wasn't just a home run hitter during this
- 4:09Speaker 1: season too, Like you know what I mean, he was
- 4:11Speaker 1: not just hitting all those home runs. I mean, it
- 4:14Speaker 1: was a fantastic aspect of the season, But I mean,
- 4:18Speaker 1: how many singles did he have this season?
- 4:19Speaker 4: You know? I mean he had a decent.
- 4:21Speaker 1: Amount of them, you know, just on the ball, and
- 4:24Speaker 1: his OPS was very high.
- 4:25Speaker 2: Again, it was top four ops and all baseball.
- 4:29Speaker 3: Just to see that guy kind of not give you
- 4:31Speaker 3: that same production in the postseason. Like, yeah, Bryce Harper,
- 4:35Speaker 3: I get because he's making three to million dollars. He's
- 4:38Speaker 3: the face of the organization that you expect more of him,
- 4:40Speaker 3: and I think it's fair to criticize him for the
- 4:43Speaker 3: lack of player or lack of performance at the plate
- 4:45Speaker 3: in that series. But he he was dealing with injuries.
- 4:48Speaker 3: He wasn't the same Bryce Harper. This was kind of
- 4:50Speaker 3: a down year for him. This is really this was
- 4:52Speaker 3: Kyle Schwarber, and Kyle Schwarber had to lead the way
- 4:55Speaker 3: the same. Bryce Harper had an amazing year heading into
- 4:57Speaker 3: the postseason for the World Series run, and Bryce Harper
- 4:59Speaker 3: played to me he was the exact type of player
- 5:02Speaker 3: that they needed.
- 5:03Speaker 2: They needed Kyle Schober.
- 5:04Speaker 3: To be more and it was really disappointing that he
- 5:06Speaker 3: just kind of fell short in a lot of areas.
- 5:08Speaker 1: Yeah, and hated I hate the expectations game that we
- 5:11Speaker 1: all played throughout the season and especially during September two,
- 5:15Speaker 1: when you're like, wow, they are in a really good position.
- 5:18Speaker 1: But with that being said, the expectations game, you know,
- 5:21Speaker 1: we're already looking towards twenty twenty six. Here you know,
- 5:24Speaker 1: we're wondering what this team is going to look like
- 5:26Speaker 1: moving forward. We're all talking about it right now. I mean,
- 5:29Speaker 1: they ran it back this past season, and yes there
- 5:31Speaker 1: were some additions like Max Kepler, Harrison Bader before the
- 5:34Speaker 1: trade deadline who were brought in. I'm not sure if
- 5:37Speaker 1: they can run it back again next season. I mean,
- 5:40Speaker 1: we're going to certainly get into like some of the
- 5:42Speaker 1: guys who may be here maybe not here and.
- 5:43Speaker 4: Stuff, but.
- 5:46Speaker 1: With some of the guys who have really large contracts too.
- 5:48Speaker 1: You know, there's the rumors of might this guy get traded?
- 5:51Speaker 1: You know, Kyle Schwarber are certainly going to talk about
- 5:53Speaker 1: him and that that contract as well.
- 5:55Speaker 4: I mean, let's dive into it.
- 5:57Speaker 1: You know, what are your thoughts here, John about you know,
- 5:59Speaker 1: do they quote run it back or things going to
- 6:01Speaker 1: look dramatically different?
- 6:04Speaker 2: Yeah? I think it is.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And I know as we're talking about this now, Rob
- 6:08Speaker 3: Thompson is going to come back.
- 6:10Speaker 2: That's already been announced.
- 6:12Speaker 3: So like that that already seems like, oh, here we
- 6:14Speaker 3: go again. They're gonna do the same thing. We're all
- 6:16Speaker 3: at the same manager. But I think Rob Thompson coming
- 6:19Speaker 3: back doesn't signal any of that at all. I think
- 6:21Speaker 3: they may should have moved on, and that has nothing
- 6:23Speaker 3: to do with Rob. That's just like, Okay, we tried it.
- 6:25Speaker 3: We got to move on to do something. But Rob
- 6:27Speaker 3: has been very successful, so I get they want to
- 6:29Speaker 3: stick with a successful manager. But they are going to
- 6:31Speaker 3: shake things up. I think it's already been alluded to.
- 6:33Speaker 3: Ribindamar Junior kind of alluded to possibly something happening on
- 6:37Speaker 3: WIP this weekend. So there's a big contract is going
- 6:41Speaker 3: to be moved. Most likely it is going to look
- 6:44Speaker 3: vastly different than it is now. I think the one
- 6:47Speaker 3: guy you maybe re signed back is j t Romuto,
- 6:49Speaker 3: and I think people want to but also you got
- 6:51Speaker 3: to think about your resigning a thirty four year old catcher.
- 6:54Speaker 3: So that there's just and I don't know the exact
- 6:56Speaker 3: moves that are going to be made, but I know
- 6:58Speaker 3: it's going to be massive like this, This lineup can't
- 7:00Speaker 3: come back the same way it was. I think there
- 7:02Speaker 3: are going to be big contracts moved. Bryce Sharper is
- 7:04Speaker 3: the only one I think that that really is safe.
- 7:06Speaker 3: Everything else is kind of up in the air.
- 7:08Speaker 1: Yeah, I was gonna ask about Yeah, I was gonna
- 7:11Speaker 1: ask about Trey Turner because I mean, I feel like
- 7:13Speaker 1: with that contract that he signed, he's gonna be here
- 7:15Speaker 1: for like another thirty years or something like that, you know,
- 7:18Speaker 1: And I don't know do you move on from that
- 7:21Speaker 1: type of not only a contract, but the type of
- 7:24Speaker 1: player he is. And he had a fantastic season here,
- 7:26Speaker 1: but I mean it it took a few years for
- 7:28Speaker 1: him to have that fantastic season here in twenty twenty five,
- 7:31Speaker 1: so I could see him getting moved. And I'll be honest,
- 7:34Speaker 1: I don't know if I would be too too sad
- 7:37Speaker 1: as a Phillies fan to actually see that. It would
- 7:39Speaker 1: be disappointing, But I don't know how sad I would be.
- 7:42Speaker 4: What do you think?
- 7:44Speaker 3: Yeah, I would not be either. And I think Trey
- 7:46Speaker 3: Turner finally put together a good year. I don't think
- 7:48Speaker 3: he's he ever became the player that he was with
- 7:52Speaker 3: Los Angeles to the Nationals. Yeah, So I do feel
- 7:54Speaker 3: like they got a worse version of him during this contract,
- 7:57Speaker 3: But it's a type of player. You have to give
- 7:59Speaker 3: that kind of contra too. That's just where contracts are
- 8:01Speaker 3: going now. But I think you would need to move
- 8:04Speaker 3: on from it. It just didn't seem like it worked
- 8:06Speaker 3: all that much or worked to the degree that it
- 8:08Speaker 3: needed to with the amount of money that he's being paid.
- 8:11Speaker 3: And again, I just think you really need to shake
- 8:13Speaker 3: things up, and that starts with I think moving some
- 8:15Speaker 3: of the big contracts. And it's not like building from
- 8:18Speaker 3: the ground up, but I think, yeah, you're gonna have
- 8:20Speaker 3: to find smarter ways to spend money, and really I
- 8:23Speaker 3: think try and to space out that money across different areas.
- 8:29Speaker 3: The Phillies became very top heavy, So I think Phillies
- 8:32Speaker 3: now are kind of looking at this like, look, we
- 8:34Speaker 3: got some guys in the farm system, Maybe we can
- 8:35Speaker 3: bring up our farm systems to be getting better. Maybe
- 8:38Speaker 3: we could space out the contracts a little bit so
- 8:40Speaker 3: we can get guys in multiple different positions instead of
- 8:42Speaker 3: trying to get you know, a three hundred million dollar
- 8:44Speaker 3: guy in one position. And I think a lot of
- 8:46Speaker 3: that's going to go into pitching as well. But yeah,
- 8:48Speaker 3: I think that's that's likely gonna happen, something big like that,
- 8:51Speaker 3: somebody like Trey Turner moving on. And I do think
- 8:54Speaker 3: that also means like Kyle Schwarber just had again like
- 8:56Speaker 3: his career year and numbers that like usually you pay
- 9:00Speaker 3: a guy with those numbers, I don't care if he's
- 9:01Speaker 3: just a DH. That guy a lot of money to
- 9:03Speaker 3: hit that kind of production. So I just don't I
- 9:06Speaker 3: think it's gonna be unrealistic to think that even Kyle
- 9:08Speaker 3: Schober could come back. So again, I don't know what
- 9:10Speaker 3: the changes are going to be. I've looked at some
- 9:12Speaker 3: of the free agent free agent guys heading into the
- 9:15Speaker 3: free agency for this offseason. Nothing really stood out, But
- 9:18Speaker 3: I do know it is going to be a massive
- 9:20Speaker 3: shake up.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Absolutely. I think you're absolutely right. You mentioned pitching there,
- 9:25Speaker 1: and I think from a pitching standpoint, Ranger Swarez likely
- 9:29Speaker 1: going to be gone in free agency, especially if they're
- 9:32Speaker 1: looking to bring back Kyle Schwarber. If they are at
- 9:35Speaker 1: this point, I mean Ranger Swarez, he's gonna get a
- 9:38Speaker 1: very nice contract that it's gonna be tough for the
- 9:40Speaker 1: Phillies to match.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Whatever he deserved too.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Absolutely, what a season and what he was like the
- 9:46Speaker 1: one guy in the series where you could like be
- 9:48Speaker 1: like right there, that's what we need.
- 9:49Speaker 2: Yeah, it was also after with the one home run,
- 9:51Speaker 2: he was fantastic.
- 9:52Speaker 1: Yes, absolutely, Look we're hoping Zach Wheeler is gonna be
- 9:55Speaker 1: coming back. I mean that is not a one hundred
- 9:58Speaker 1: percent certainty. I mean there is a high percentage chance
- 10:01Speaker 1: that he comes back, but it's not a one hundred certainty.
- 10:05Speaker 1: I'm wondering if we should be just comfortable with Christopher Sanchez,
- 10:09Speaker 1: jyesus Lozardo, Andrew Paynter, and even Aaron Nola. Given Nola's
- 10:13Speaker 1: struggles that he did have this year before he was
- 10:16Speaker 1: then injured, do they concentrate on starting pitching in the
- 10:20Speaker 1: off season at all?
- 10:21Speaker 4: John, what do you think.
- 10:23Speaker 3: They They have been going after pitching a lot in
- 10:26Speaker 3: drafts and kind of trying to bolster that part of
- 10:30Speaker 3: their of their their farm system. So like, I think
- 10:33Speaker 3: eventually you're gonna have to bring up and Andrew Painter
- 10:35Speaker 3: just see what he has. You know, I think you've
- 10:37Speaker 3: You've put enough time and effort into it, uh to
- 10:40Speaker 3: owe it to yourself to try and see what these
- 10:42Speaker 3: guys are like. But the good thing is with the
- 10:44Speaker 3: starting rotation, and Yes, Wheeler is a big part of that.
- 10:48Speaker 3: You would like to see him back, You would like
- 10:49Speaker 3: to see him healthy, but we know he's not part
- 10:50Speaker 3: of like the long term plans. He's I think he's
- 10:53Speaker 3: uh scheduled to retire after this the next season, yeah,
- 10:56Speaker 3: or I think he might have another one, but I
- 10:57Speaker 3: think it's after next season, so it's.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Not like long plans.
- 11:00Speaker 3: But I am very happy that the Phillies have such
- 11:04Speaker 3: an anchor as an ACE with Christopher Sanchez.
- 11:07Speaker 2: Yes, that that guy.
- 11:08Speaker 3: Is under a very good, team friendly contract for a
- 11:11Speaker 3: long time. He is by far one of the top
- 11:14Speaker 3: pitchers in baseball and really something to build around. Then
- 11:18Speaker 3: then behind him like Lizardo, I thought pitched pretty well
- 11:20Speaker 3: yea in the postseason and throughout the year. Yeah, there
- 11:23Speaker 3: were some ups and downs, but I really think he
- 11:25Speaker 3: figured something out. And I think that was such a
- 11:27Speaker 3: great move to get Lizardro just because of the stuff
- 11:29Speaker 3: has always been really good.
- 11:31Speaker 2: So I'm I'm happy with.
- 11:33Speaker 3: With some of the pieces there, but I'm happy that
- 11:34Speaker 3: they have an anchor to build around. And the thing is,
- 11:37Speaker 3: not every starting rotation is gonna be like the Phillies
- 11:40Speaker 3: were when you had Aaron Nola at his best, we
- 11:44Speaker 3: had Zach Wheeler at his best, and he had Ranger Suarez.
- 11:46Speaker 3: That is that is tough to get in Major league
- 11:48Speaker 3: base right, But it all starts with the number one guy,
- 11:51Speaker 3: and if Wheelers not gonna be it. They have one,
- 11:54Speaker 3: So I think that's just a great starting point.
- 11:56Speaker 2: At least.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Yes, they're gonna have to go after it in free agency.
- 11:59Speaker 3: They're gonna have to go after a lot in free agency,
- 12:01Speaker 3: and I think that's that's why you end up trying
- 12:03Speaker 3: to move some big contracts. But I just think it's
- 12:06Speaker 3: such a good starting point when you go, yeah, Christopher
- 12:07Speaker 3: Sanchez is the number one guy.
- 12:08Speaker 2: That's such a great place to start.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Absolutely again, folks talking to John Jansen from Fox Sports, Phillies,
- 12:14Speaker 1: The Gambler and John Wyce. You tell everybody where they
- 12:17Speaker 1: can find you on the socials out there if they want.

- 12:24Speaker 3: at Underscore Jay Jansen thirty four on Instagram.

- 12:30Speaker 2: my college football randomness and movie randomness. Yes, so check
- 12:34Speaker 2: me out at Jay Jansen thirty four.

- 12:53Speaker 1: search out my name, Eric's name Len not on social
- 12:57Speaker 1: media at all.
- 12:58Speaker 4: Bless his soul.
- 12:59Speaker 1: So that'd be an said, we're gonna take a quick
- 13:01Speaker 1: break to pay some bills here. We're gonna be back
- 13:03Speaker 1: in just a bit. We got more Phillies talk, folks.
- 13:06Speaker 1: All right, we're back with our good friend John Jansen
- 13:08Speaker 1: from Fox Sports Phillies The Gambler. Great, great conversations about
- 13:12Speaker 1: the world of Philly sports with John on a continual
- 13:16Speaker 1: basis whenever we're able to have him on Love talking.
- 13:19Speaker 4: About the Pills the Eagles with you.
- 13:22Speaker 1: But yeah, with regard to the Phillies, let's continue this conversation.
- 13:26Speaker 4: Because you mentioned JT.
- 13:27Speaker 1: Real Muto right before the break, I kind of wanted
- 13:29Speaker 1: to dive into him a little bit more. I had
- 13:33Speaker 1: concerns about him coming into this twenty twenty five season,
- 13:37Speaker 1: about just where he was in terms of just his arm,
- 13:40Speaker 1: you know, what he was gonna do in the batter's box,
- 13:43Speaker 1: and whether or not we would see just any decline
- 13:45Speaker 1: from him. And we really didn't see too much a
- 13:49Speaker 1: decline other than his power numbers dropping off for a
- 13:52Speaker 1: second straight season. However, with that said, I think they
- 13:56Speaker 1: kind of still need to resign him. You mentioned, yes,
- 13:59Speaker 1: he's thirty four years old. I mean, how many years
- 14:01Speaker 1: might it be? Who knows? But I think when you
- 14:04Speaker 1: look at the pitching within within this Philly system right now,
- 14:08Speaker 1: and of course they could bring in I was saying pitching,
- 14:11Speaker 1: I'm sorry at catching.
- 14:12Speaker 4: You look at the catching within.
- 14:14Speaker 1: The farm system, I'm not comfortable with it. Might they
- 14:18Speaker 1: want to go outside and free agency try to get
- 14:20Speaker 1: another pitcher. I personally don't necessarily think so you may
- 14:24Speaker 1: think differently here, John, So what are your thoughts on
- 14:27Speaker 1: jt real Muto's future here and if the organization should
- 14:31Speaker 1: resign him.
- 14:33Speaker 3: Yeah, I think it's it's definitely a good option to
- 14:36Speaker 3: re sign g Tiro Muteo. Again, the concern is is
- 14:40Speaker 3: age and playing that much and if he's going to
- 14:43Speaker 3: start being able to last a whole season, because I
- 14:46Speaker 3: think you really have to start thinking about that with
- 14:48Speaker 3: a catcher that's thirty four years old and that has
- 14:50Speaker 3: played so much baseball and he's been so reliable for them, endurable,
- 14:54Speaker 3: But that's obviously with age that goes away. So I
- 14:57Speaker 3: think you can resign him because I don't think it's
- 15:00Speaker 3: going to be a lot of money. Nobody is going
- 15:01Speaker 3: to throw a ton of money at a thirty four
- 15:03Speaker 3: year old catcher, so you could probably get him on
- 15:05Speaker 3: a solid deal. What needs to happen, though, is I
- 15:07Speaker 3: think you need to spend a little bit more on
- 15:09Speaker 3: a backup catcher, really, a reliable guy that can give
- 15:12Speaker 3: j t Romuto some time off that he can DH
- 15:15Speaker 3: maybe at times if needed. But JT's gonna have to
- 15:18Speaker 3: start taking a lot more games off and just have
- 15:21Speaker 3: an understanding of it's a thirty four year old catcher
- 15:26Speaker 3: and he is going to probably not have his best
- 15:29Speaker 3: baseball coming up. He's probably not going to be able
- 15:32Speaker 3: to finish seasons the way he does, so I think
- 15:35Speaker 3: you have to take that into account and take into
- 15:36Speaker 3: account that there might be times you wear long stretches
- 15:38Speaker 3: without JT. But I think the benefits of having him
- 15:41Speaker 3: catch a pitching staff, even if it's just like a
- 15:44Speaker 3: two year contract and you kind of have him as
- 15:46Speaker 3: like a placeholder until you find a better option somewhere else,
- 15:50Speaker 3: I think it's just best to look at JT that
- 15:51Speaker 3: way that Hey, look he can anchor the starting, he
- 15:53Speaker 3: can anchor the pitching. He's really great with them. Their
- 15:56Speaker 3: numbers seem to be a lot better when he's catching
- 15:58Speaker 3: because he's so smart and defensively still seems really good.
- 16:00Speaker 3: So use him kind of as a placeholder at while
- 16:02Speaker 3: he's still playing productive baseball. Get a good backup catcher
- 16:06Speaker 3: to make sure you're not, you know, putting him into
- 16:08Speaker 3: the ground too much right, him into the ground too
- 16:10Speaker 3: much right, and kind of work work your way into
- 16:13Speaker 3: it that way.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Do you think a two to three year contract made
- 16:16Speaker 1: four tops?
- 16:17Speaker 4: Probably right?
- 16:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I would say two or three yeah, once once
- 16:21Speaker 3: you I mean, thirty four is already old.
- 16:23Speaker 2: What's stay hold? I'm like getting I'm close to that
- 16:25Speaker 2: age exactly.
- 16:27Speaker 3: But for a catcher, yeah, I mean that's thirty five,
- 16:31Speaker 3: thirty six. You just don't see many catchers, yeah, lasting
- 16:34Speaker 3: that long. There are some that have done it, and
- 16:36Speaker 3: some catchers that have been really durable throughout baseball through
- 16:39Speaker 3: the years, but it's it's just hard to expect that.
- 16:42Speaker 3: So I just think you have to expect what usually
- 16:44Speaker 3: happens with the catcher at that ege.
- 16:46Speaker 4: All right, Well, moving along, here.
- 16:47Speaker 1: I do wonder what's going to happen to the bottom
- 16:50Speaker 1: of the order, guys like Bryson Stott, Brandon marsh Alec Bohm.
- 16:54Speaker 1: I mean I could see them possibly all landing in
- 16:57Speaker 1: other spots too. I mean, I think Nick Cassion has
- 17:00Speaker 1: almost certainly played his last game in Philly as of
- 17:03Speaker 1: us here recording this. How are you seeing the fate
- 17:06Speaker 1: of some of these players shaking out this offseason here?
- 17:10Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:10Speaker 3: The the unfortunate part is is like, if you're gonna
- 17:13Speaker 3: have a shakeup, you can't shake up everything, all right.
- 17:16Speaker 3: That's the really part is like what what part of
- 17:18Speaker 3: this team do you bring back? Maybe you bring back
- 17:22Speaker 3: the guys like Bowman Scott who are on friendly deals
- 17:25Speaker 3: like not it's not hurting you all that much to
- 17:27Speaker 3: keep these guys around. I think you would have to,
- 17:30Speaker 3: especially Bryson Stott. You know, I don't love his bat,
- 17:34Speaker 3: and I've I think the numbers that he has, he's
- 17:37Speaker 3: kind of just a player that he is, and I
- 17:39Speaker 3: don't expect his numbers.
- 17:40Speaker 2: To improve all that much.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I think everybody was like, oh, maybe he could be,
- 17:43Speaker 3: you know, be competing for the kid the crown of
- 17:47Speaker 3: the best average of Major league basse.
- 17:48Speaker 2: But he's just never going to be that player. Yeah,
- 17:50Speaker 2: but he's.
- 17:51Speaker 3: Really great defensively and again young still and not a
- 17:54Speaker 3: lot of money. I think you have to keep a
- 17:56Speaker 3: player like that. I think you would have to keep
- 17:58Speaker 3: even a player like Alec Bohm Brandon Marsh. You can
- 18:01Speaker 3: kind of move on from the platoon thing is great,
- 18:03Speaker 3: but eventually you're just gonna have to find a really
- 18:06Speaker 3: steady center fielder or a steady outfield piece that he's not.
- 18:10Speaker 3: So I would be more willing to move on from him,
- 18:12Speaker 3: but that's a tough thing with the shakeup is.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't love Alec Bohm as a player.
- 18:17Speaker 3: It's just I don't love a six foot four five
- 18:20Speaker 3: third baseman that has zero power whatsoever. It is more
- 18:23Speaker 3: of a slap hitter that doesn't work in Major league
- 18:25Speaker 3: baseball anymore. So I don't love it, but still can
- 18:27Speaker 3: be productive and not killing them in terms of money.
- 18:31Speaker 3: And same thing with Bryson Stotts. So I think it's
- 18:34Speaker 3: two guys that you kind of have to keep around
- 18:36Speaker 3: because you just can't. You can't figure out an entire
- 18:39Speaker 3: lineup just in one offseason.
- 18:40Speaker 2: You have to keep you.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Well, John, that was very therapeutic going through the Phillies
- 18:44Speaker 1: with you here. Seriously, I definitely needed it, buddy. Seriously,
- 18:47Speaker 1: we've been it's just been, it's just been so rough
- 18:50Speaker 1: sitting with this over these past few days. But before
- 18:53Speaker 1: I let you go, my friend, to close us out here,
- 18:57Speaker 1: as we're continuing to watch the playoffs, I'm wondering which team, if,
- 19:01Speaker 1: maybe if you are pulling for, I mean, for me
- 19:05Speaker 1: to be honest with you, it's the Mariners. I mean
- 19:07Speaker 1: they've they've kind of been my al team for some
- 19:10Speaker 1: time because I just loved Ken Griffy Junior growing up,
- 19:13Speaker 1: like like when.
- 19:14Speaker 4: I was like, oh yeah, okay, even in my twenties, I.
- 19:16Speaker 1: Loved Ken Griffy Junior so much and I just feel
- 19:19Speaker 1: like that guy, for whatever reason, through the steroid era
- 19:23Speaker 1: and stuff like that, just never.
- 19:24Speaker 4: Got his due in a way.
- 19:26Speaker 1: We all know that he is a great baseball player,
- 19:28Speaker 1: but like really getting his due.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Yes, I don't know.
- 19:32Speaker 1: And it's made me a Mariners fan. I follow the Mariners,
- 19:35Speaker 1: and it's it's great where they're at right now. In
- 19:37Speaker 1: my personal opinion, I'm pulling for them at this point.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Is there a team that you're pulling for? Is we're
- 19:42Speaker 1: closing things up here.
- 19:44Speaker 3: Definitely, not any National League team.
- 19:46Speaker 2: For some reason. I never liked the Brewers.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Yeah, but especially the Dodgers. This iteration of the Dodgers. Oh,
- 19:51Speaker 3: you just can't move for it all. So you'd have
- 19:53Speaker 3: to be an American League team for me selfishly. So
- 19:56Speaker 3: I am an East Carolina grad. Okay, And there are
- 19:59Speaker 3: two Carolina pictures on the Toronto.
- 20:01Speaker 2: Blue Jays runs.
- 20:02Speaker 3: Oh all right, I am. I'm gonna go with the
- 20:04Speaker 3: Blue Jays. Okay, Savage the starting.
- 20:07Speaker 2: Pitcher in Game two, even though he got rocked at
- 20:09Speaker 2: Game two. Yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Uh.
- 20:11Speaker 3: And also I'm a Jeff Hoffman who was a former
- 20:13Speaker 3: Phillies Carolina gray.
- 20:15Speaker 4: So is he why not Carolina? I didn't know he
- 20:17Speaker 4: was in Carolina grad.
- 20:18Speaker 2: I was there when he was at East Carolina. Oh wow,
- 20:20Speaker 2: that's how long. That's how old he is. Now you
- 20:22Speaker 2: know I'm an old guy.
- 20:24Speaker 4: Oh god.
- 20:24Speaker 3: But yeah, but yes, I will. I will root for that.
- 20:28Speaker 3: I'll always root for a pirate. And look, Toronto has
- 20:30Speaker 3: always been it's a fun team. Like vladgir Junior is
- 20:33Speaker 3: a really fun player. Yeah, I think that city is
- 20:35Speaker 3: a lot of fun for baseball, even though they've beaten
- 20:38Speaker 3: the Phillies in a world series.
- 20:39Speaker 2: So we don't yes that yes.
- 20:41Speaker 3: But yeah, just I think it's it's an organization in
- 20:44Speaker 3: city that have been with this core kind of waiting
- 20:46Speaker 3: for a moment like this and they're finally having it.
- 20:48Speaker 2: So it's exciting to see a team like Yeah.
- 20:51Speaker 1: Great discussion, folks. He's John Janssen from Fox Sports Phillies
- 20:55Speaker 1: The Gambler. My friend, thank you so much for taking
- 20:58Speaker 1: the time. Love the conversation again, it was therapy for me.
