Transcript
- 0:00Well, Dad, we're back. We didn't get cancelled, so
- 0:02that's always good. There's a lot of great shows out
- 0:05there in the history of entertainment that they made.
- 0:07They get one pilot, they get one shot at it, and they never go
- 0:11any further than that. Granted, it's a lot easier to
- 0:13not get cancelled when you're just making your own show and
- 0:16uploading it yourself on the Internet, but nevertheless,
- 0:19we're still here. It's actually been a really
- 0:21great week. We've gotten a lot of great
- 0:22feedback here on the Mass cast. Before we go any further, he is
- 0:27former NASCAR Cup Series and ORP series.
- 0:30We're calling it driver Rick Mast.
- 0:32I am his non driving son Ricky Mast.
- 0:34And we're pleased to be back with you again.
- 0:38A lot of great comments this week, a lot of great feedback.
- 0:40A lot of people checked us out on Kenny Wallace Media, both on
- 0:44Kenny's YouTube channel and on the audio side on Kenny Wallace
- 0:47Media, Charlie and Kenny really awesome to work with.
- 0:51We're we're grateful of them for giving us their platform to get
- 0:55this thing started up. You can follow us.
- 0:57He's at Rick mass 22 on Instagram and X I'm at Ricky
- 1:00Mast on Instagram and X but perhaps more importantly than
- 1:04that, follow our show. We got, we went ahead and
- 1:06launched some social media handles for the mass cast show.
- 1:08So on X Instagram we are mass cast show and TikTok mass cash
- 1:15show and then on Facebook, just plain old mass cast.
- 1:17So mass cash show everywhere except for Facebook, which is
- 1:21just mass cast. Give us a follow there.
- 1:23So we're of course going to be talking all things NASCAR.
- 1:25Here every week. As well as just stuff that's
- 1:28going on in our lives or in the Mass families lives.
- 1:30As and it turns out it was a, it was a pretty busy week in the
- 1:35Mass family. We'll probably get into that
- 1:36first. We'll, we'll, we'll get into the
- 1:38NASCAR stuff, the stuff in a minute here.
- 1:40How was your week, Dad? Let's start.
- 1:41That it's great. Couldn't have a but never had a
- 1:44better week Ricky. Just glad to be here man.
- 1:46Glad to be here with mass class spreading the joy and the wealth
- 1:50of knowledge that we have to to our faithful followers.
- 1:55That's that's right. That's right.
- 1:57Well, all right, this is obviously a NASCAR show, but
- 2:00there's a couple stories that just happened to happen to us
- 2:03this week that we need to get into.
- 2:05So we're just we're just going to get those out.
- 2:07We're just going to get those out first.
- 2:08OK, All right, so I, I have to tell you, this day, grossest
- 2:15moment in my life happened to me this week.
- 2:19I'm not exaggerating. So I am.
- 2:21My wife is at work, so I'm at home with our daughter Stevie.
- 2:24She's 21 months old and I've, I'm watching her for the day.
- 2:28I'm letting her kind of run around the house and keeping an
- 2:32eye on her. But you know how it is.
- 2:33Sometimes you get a little sidetracked or I'm checking
- 2:35emails while I'm also watching her.
- 2:38And I let my guard down for I mean, we're talking 20 seconds,
- 2:4230 seconds. And I noticed that all of a
- 2:44sudden she's gotten quiet. And I'm still new with this
- 2:47parenting thing. But one thing I have learned is
- 2:49if they, if they're like running around all the sudden they get
- 2:51quiet, that's usually, it's usually bad news.
- 2:55And I look around and I see that she's over near the cat food.
- 2:59And I'm like, OK, she's getting into the cat food or something.
- 3:01So I go walking over there. I'm like Stevie, get out of the
- 3:03cat food. I walk over there and she's next
- 3:06to the cat food. She's not in it.
- 3:08I look down on the ground. The cat apparently wasn't
- 3:12feeling well and left a giant runny, steamy pile of diarrhea
- 3:18on the ground. And my daughter has her hand
- 3:22firmly planted in it. And it's just all over the
- 3:26floor, all over the floor. I run over there.
- 3:30I grab her, run over to the sink, start washing it off.
- 3:34I scrub her hand multiple times with soap, thankfully only on
- 3:38her hand and a little bit on her wrist.
- 3:40Thank God not in her hair and thank God not in her mouth or
- 3:45nose or anywhere like that. But I will tell you, as I was
- 3:48sitting there scrubbing her hand, scrubbing her hand, I was
- 3:50thinking, you know, they tell you when you're going to like
- 3:52when you find out you're going to be a parent about how amazing
- 3:55it is to hold your child for the first time.
- 3:58And like when you get home from work and they come running to
- 4:01hug you and how and they're exactly right.
- 4:04It's amazing. They do not tell you about how
- 4:07your your child might use cat shit as finger paint on the on
- 4:11the ground. So that was my week.
- 4:14Yeah, why did you why did you run her so fast to the sink,
- 4:18Ricky? What should I have done as
- 4:22opposed? To you should know life on the
- 4:25farm when you're born, you know, life on the farm.
- 4:27I mean, that's how you that's how you build up resistance to
- 4:30everything you're outside. You mess with the hogs and the
- 4:33cows and the poops and the sometimes the babies will eat
- 4:36it. You know, I think it gives them.
- 4:38I'm not sure. Don't give them some resistance
- 4:41to things down the road. You drinking out of a water
- 4:44hose, you know, maybe. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, that's.
- 4:48About I'm not, I'm just not sure about that.
- 4:50I mean, yeah, it was the right response, but you know, that's
- 4:54sure that we haven't we haven't what'sified too many things
- 4:58here, but not letting your kid. This is Oh yeah.
- 5:02I probably shouldn't have said that.
- 5:04It probably it's the exact same as letting her drink from the
- 5:06garden house. Sure.
- 5:07Same immunity, same resistance. So you're you think I should
- 5:11just I mean, what is the period of time you let this go on
- 5:14before you then cut it? What?
- 5:15What point is the immunity build up?
- 5:17I mean not a whole, not a whole meal, but a just a little taste,
- 5:21you know, just a little, just a little something going in their
- 5:25system. Start building up resistance to
- 5:27all the world problems we have out here, diseases and stuff.
- 5:32Well, you know, I don't know, man.
- 5:34It's just, I don't know. You know, I think I think that's
- 5:37a great transition to. I want to talk about what you
- 5:39were up to this week. So, yeah, what we're, so we're
- 5:45actually recording this a day later.
- 5:46You needed a you needed an extra day to deal with some stuff.
- 5:49So what happened to you? Well.
- 5:52The week of the Snowmageddon. What's that?
- 5:54Two weeks ago now, right before we did all the work and hooked
- 5:57up snow plows and snow blowers and did all this stuff, the
- 6:00generators got everything ready. And I was driving down the road
- 6:02there doing the Snowmageddon one day and, and all of a sudden it,
- 6:07it, my thumb hurt real bad. I like, I pushed, I pushed my
- 6:10thumb on something. It was like I had something.
- 6:12Anyhow, I looked at it and I think, well, I might have a
- 6:14little splinter. Well, I got to look at, I think
- 6:16it was a little piece of metal, my metal splinter.
- 6:19And so four or five days later, that little splinter in my thumb
- 6:25swelled up pretty big. Then it got bigger.
- 6:28So we, we stopped by one of those drive through medical
- 6:32express deals, you know, where they work on you, I guess urgent
- 6:35cares, Med express, whatever. So they went in there and they,
- 6:38they shot some lidocaine in there and then just squeezed on
- 6:41it and drained the stuff out, put me on a week's antibiotics.
- 6:44So we took it was, we're on antibiotics for a week.
- 6:47And then this past the end of this past week, by Friday that
- 6:51thing really got sore again. It's swelling up.
- 6:53By Saturday it was in pretty good shape.
- 6:56By Sunday it was like, OK, we got, we got an issue here.
- 7:00So between my wife and your sisters, my daughters, you know,
- 7:04they just persuade me to go to the ER.
- 7:06So I go to the ER, we get up there, they proceed to put all
- 7:11the painkiller in it and all that.
- 7:12Then they take a knife and slice it open and do all the draining
- 7:15and the next thing I know, I'm laying in a bed.
- 7:17You know, they say, well, you got to stay overnight.
- 7:19So I spent Sunday night Sunday, Sunday night and parsley Monday
- 7:25in a hospital bed here locally, getting in with an IV hooked up
- 7:28to me with antibiotics running into me to fix, kill or whatever
- 7:32is attacking my my thumb. But anyhow, we're out, you know,
- 7:37and Thumb's looking better. Probably if I had eaten some cat
- 7:42poop when I was a little kid, that may have fixed it.
- 7:45But anyhow, there can you see. I was gonna.
- 7:47I was gonna. Say I can't.
- 7:48There it is. Everybody see, I was gonna set
- 7:52out. I was gonna say, yeah, I'm
- 7:56surprised all the with everything growing up on the
- 7:58farm and whatnot, since you weren't wasified that you hadn't
- 8:01built up a natural immunity to. Look, I've had metal splitters,
- 8:05steel and fiber. I've had every kind of splinter
- 8:08noon man in my fingers, my thumbs, my hands in my lifetime
- 8:12never had a deal like this happen.
- 8:14So I I'm not really sure. They said a culture did a
- 8:16culture on it. So we we haven't heard back yet
- 8:19what exactly what sopholithic city is yet.
- 8:23Stuff Alephasis. Sure.
- 8:25Yeah, that's that's that sounds about right.
- 8:29Well, how like actually, yeah. Racing years, you're bound to
- 8:33get some stuff like stuck in your hands and and metal working
- 8:36on cars. Rex I mean, what from the racing
- 8:38years did you ever have anything stuck?
- 8:40Like a wreck or something, or just working on cars.
- 8:43You know, Actually, Ricky, the year of the great Daytona 589,
- 8:47we went down and LED that race to the unsponsored #66 right
- 8:50before we left my, I had a piece of metal in my hand, actually on
- 8:54the upper side of my hand working on the race car, and it
- 8:57got infected. I went to the doctor right
- 8:59before Daytona. He cut, He opened it up and cut
- 9:02it out, gave me penicillin, Augmentin.
- 9:05I took that. We go to Daytona, we leave the
- 9:08Daytona 500 first time ever, right, and do all that stuff,
- 9:11come back home and it all healed up.
- 9:13Then in March, I got a cold, right?
- 9:17It's a real bad cold. And so I decided, you know, I
- 9:20still have some of these Augmentin penicillin pills in
- 9:23the medicine cabinet. I didn't take all of them from
- 9:25the hand deal. So I decided to treat myself.
- 9:28Well, I did that. Next thing I know, man, I can't
- 9:30breathe. I'm itching, I'm all swelled up.
- 9:32Run to the doctor. They said what was well, you've
- 9:35taken something. I said no, take anything.
- 9:37Well, you've taken anything. I said, well, I had some
- 9:38Augmentin pills. Ah, you, you were allergic to
- 9:41penicillin. I said, no, I'm not.
- 9:42They said, yeah, you are. They gave me a shot, man, in
- 9:44like 3 minutes. I was in good shape.
- 9:46So from that moment forward, I become allergic to penicillin.
- 9:50Right. So, so anyhow, that's, that's
- 9:52the, that's the medal in the hand story.
- 9:55OK. Well, between all of that and
- 9:58then mom texted us in the family group chat today, which we which
- 10:01is named mast holes by the way, we change it every December to
- 10:05May a Chris mast, but the rest of the year it's just the mast
- 10:07holes thread. So I'll I'll just read some of
- 10:10this text because it's kind of hard to do it justice without
- 10:13she goes. I was Browning some pork chops
- 10:15for a crock pot recipe and as usual, the house got a little
- 10:18smoky. So I cracked open some windows
- 10:20and sliding glass door and went upstairs to get ready for my
- 10:22nail appointment. I came back downstairs and the
- 10:24cats were going bat crap crazy running around knocking stuff
- 10:28off on counters off the table and counters as I'm standing
- 10:31there trying to figure out what's going on and then a bird
- 10:34flies by me. So basically she cracked open
- 10:37the window, a bird got in the house.
- 10:39The cats are chasing the bird around kind of like Snotts
- 10:42chases the squirrel around in Christmas vacation.
- 10:45We found out later the bird had crapped on her, I think, washer
- 10:47and dryer till finally she was able to, you know, open up a
- 10:52window, let the bird out. So between my daughter with the
- 10:55finger paint with the cat crap, you going to the hospital with
- 10:59an infection and mom letting birds fly around inside the
- 11:02house, it's been an eventful week for us.
- 11:05Yeah, the. Other party.
- 11:06Yeah, the funny part about that, Rick, she calls me.
- 11:08She calls me like what? What?
- 11:10You know, what the hell am I supposed to do about a bird
- 11:12flying? While while the bird is in the
- 11:14house. Yeah, I'm not close.
- 11:15I'm 20 miles from home. Right.
- 11:17While the bird was flying around and in these parts, she wasn't
- 11:20hysterical, but she was almost hysterical laughing, right?
- 11:23Because the cats, the cats running across the counter is
- 11:26knocking stuff off everywhere is like, just like the dog in
- 11:29Christmas vacation. The cats were going crazy.
- 11:31So that funny little deal today? Yeah, well, so there you go.
- 11:36With the class being postponed, we still have plenty of going on
- 11:40in our our personal lives. But I think we've spent, we've
- 11:43spent a good, good amount of time going all through that with
- 11:46everybody. So we'll get into the NASCAR
- 11:48stuff. So as we're taping this on
- 11:51Tuesday night, Clash is scheduled to go tomorrow night.
- 11:53I don't know. I haven't looked at the weather
- 11:55report. I did see some tweets they're
- 11:56saying there could be a little more precipitation to dodge
- 12:00tomorrow night. I don't I've looked at it.
- 12:01I'm just, I am just as I usually do with NASCAR or any sporting
- 12:06event I'm going to, I am just proceeding as if it is going to
- 12:08happen and put good positive vibes out there and just assume
- 12:13it's going to happen. So, so with that being
- 12:17postponed, the number of cool little things that came up as a
- 12:20as a result of that, I did see where NASCAR put out a, they're
- 12:25doing a refund for folks who had we bought tickets, which I
- 12:29thought not just a refund. You can get a full refund or you
- 12:32can get 120% refund where you got your money back plus 20%
- 12:37towards a race that attract another track that NASCAR owns
- 12:41other than I think Daytona 500 and the the championship race at
- 12:44Homestead. So I thought that was pretty
- 12:45cool. I also thought it was pretty
- 12:47cool. I think Ricky Stenhouse and Todd
- 12:49Gillan showed up at Bowman Gray to help shovel snow out of the
- 12:53stands. I don't know if you saw that,
- 12:54but I thought that was that was pretty cool and a good way for
- 12:57drivers to get themselves out there and get a little goodwill
- 13:00good vibes going around them and their personalities.
- 13:03So thought that was pretty cool. But I did want to talk about
- 13:06just with the the clash. So I enjoyed it last year at
- 13:10Bowman Gray. I said that last week, looking
- 13:12forward to hopefully seeing it tomorrow night.
- 13:15But all this talk around the class now with the weather and
- 13:19the weather, you know you can't control that.
- 13:20You have a big Blizzard come through me we supposed to do,
- 13:24but there's a lot of talk around the class about what should
- 13:27happen with it. Should it move around each year?
- 13:31Should it go back to Daytona? Should we have it at all?
- 13:36I'll tell you. For me, the Clash, when I was a
- 13:40kid, I like the Clash because it was kind of like the start of
- 13:43speed week at at Daytona, speed weeks.
- 13:45But really. But I believe when we were
- 13:47coming along, when I was coming along, the Clash was, correct me
- 13:51if I'm wrong, Clash and Daytona 500 qualifying were both on the
- 13:54Sunday before Daytona 500. So one week before.
- 13:58And I actually like this term. I saw Dale Junior tweeted this
- 14:01out there today. The old, the original form of
- 14:03the Clash, it was just 20 laps at the start of the week.
- 14:06And it was like a good appetizer to the week at Daytona.
- 14:09And I agree with that. So I always kind of liked it
- 14:13just because to me, whether the Clash itself, whether the race
- 14:16was good or not, it was always kind of a cool little kick off
- 14:20to speed week at Daytona. But that's that's been a number
- 14:24of decades now. You know, it's a different time
- 14:26and what the clashes kind of morphed into is something a
- 14:29little bit different. It's meant to be a big
- 14:32entertainment event to kick off NASCAR season to get interest
- 14:35around the sport and all that good stuff.
- 14:36So what would let me just start with this.
- 14:39What would you do with the Clash?
- 14:40Would you move it? Would you send it back to
- 14:42Daytona? Would you replace it?
- 14:44What would you do? Well, first let me say how glad
- 14:47I am it's at. It's at Bowman Gray and not out
- 14:50on the West Coast, right? Another one of those deals we
- 14:53try see how it works, throw it out there, see if it sticks or
- 14:56not. But you know, it just I'm just
- 15:01glad it's back at Bowman Gray instead of in LA.
- 15:04OK, that's number one. Number two, if I had my
- 15:08preference and my choice, it would be at Daytona would be
- 15:11back like it used to be. The problem with that is I spent
- 15:14my whole career, well, when we're at Daytona, I spent my
- 15:19whole career at Daytona. Or each time we're at Daytona,
- 15:22you had to bud, shoot out our Bush Clash.
- 15:25You know, you had to qualify and you had to ARCA race.
- 15:27Then you had a week of doing all this other stuff, getting ready
- 15:30for the 500 between the qualifying and qualifying races,
- 15:34and it was just such a big, big frigging deal to be at Daytona
- 15:37for two weeks and all the hoopla and all the stuff around that.
- 15:42So to me that was, I mean the Bush Clash, but shoot out, that
- 15:46was just part of that, that environment, right?
- 15:50Or that's part of that. What was that show for two
- 15:52weeks? And that was just a very, very
- 15:55big, exciting part of it. So to not have it there.
- 15:59To me, it's just, you know, it's not it's like, you know, I but
- 16:03we're in a different time now. We're in a different area now.
- 16:05So, you know, I don't know, I think being at Bowman Gray is
- 16:09great. You know, I think it should be
- 16:11somewhere centralized where they could move it around somewhere
- 16:14else they want to. That's fine.
- 16:16I think, you know, the Madhouse has proven weekly for 80 years
- 16:22to be to put on a good show. I'm not sure that's the best for
- 16:25a cup cars, but it still can be exciting.
- 16:29And of course we all know the Madhouse Madhouse is exciting.
- 16:32Nothing wrong with that. So, you know, to answer your
- 16:36question, Ricky, to me personally, I'd rather be at
- 16:38Daytona with this thing. But again, that goes back to all
- 16:41the old feelings and all the things.
- 16:42And then that brings us into, you know, I was thinking today,
- 16:47you know, what's what's really changed our sport a lot.
- 16:50That was let me let me hold that thought.
- 16:52Why don't you go ahead into whatever else you're going to
- 16:54talk about. No, go ahead.
- 16:57I want to hear, I want to hear what you I want to hear what
- 16:59you're going to. Where were you going?
- 17:00I was just thinking today, COVID really, really, really changed
- 17:03our sport a ton. If you remember, we were the
- 17:06first professional sport to go back on the field, man.
- 17:10All right, when, when COVID shut down that year, everybody shut
- 17:13down. NASCAR was the first
- 17:15professional sport to get going again.
- 17:18And how do we do that, right? We had no fan access, right?
- 17:23The only people could show up are the competitors and they
- 17:26were limited, you know, the, the, the, the, the teams that
- 17:29showed up, they were very limited of a NASCAR.
- 17:31The amount of people that could come, you'd show up, you'd
- 17:35unload the car, you line it up and you start racing, right.
- 17:39That was a whole, whole whole different 180° different
- 17:44direction of racing from the way we've always done it for 50 or
- 17:4860 years. You know, you cut out the two or
- 17:51three days of practice and qualifying and the fan
- 17:54interactions and, you know, the souvenir stuff and all the stuff
- 17:57that goes, the hoopla around the event.
- 17:59It took the event out and made it nothing but the race itself.
- 18:03And when we came out of COVID, I mean, that's the reason today
- 18:07that we have very, very, very limited practice, right?
- 18:10That's the reason today. We're only at the racetrack for
- 18:12two days most of the time, right?
- 18:15When you get there Saturday and Saturday and you race on Sunday
- 18:19and it all, it all started back with the COVID thing.
- 18:23And, you know, I think we forget about that now.
- 18:25Is that good or bad? I don't know.
- 18:27I think, you know, and again, I go back to what we used to be,
- 18:31man. And that was showing up on
- 18:33Thursday and Friday in just three days or four days.
- 18:36Three days really. I mean, each week, not Daytona,
- 18:39but everywhere else. You just, you know, you're just
- 18:41out there. The fans are out there.
- 18:43It's a weekend experience and again, the souvenirs of the fans
- 18:47deal and all the things you do in autograph sessions and
- 18:51everything that surrounds event. So much of that stuff went on
- 18:54each and every weekend at every venue we went to.
- 18:58We don't do that any longer. You know, it's it's mainly get
- 19:01there and run the race, you know, and get away now.
- 19:04The tracks have done a good job making the tracks nicer for the
- 19:08fans. You know, I Daytona, Richmond,
- 19:10all these places rebuilt these tracks, rebuilt the grandstands,
- 19:13the fan experiences, Vegas, all the stuff they do is it's much
- 19:17better that part of it's better for the fans.
- 19:19But you know, COVID didn't really change the, the, the, the
- 19:22way our sport is run right now, you know, better and worse.
- 19:26I don't know. It seems to be working pretty
- 19:28good. But it was, it was, it was.
- 19:31It was cool before. It's cool still.
- 19:33But you know, COVID is the reason we did all this.
- 19:37Well, I think there's just there's a lot you have to
- 19:40there's a whole lot to consider because I think you and I and
- 19:44most people like all the everybody we came up with like,
- 19:48I mean, I say we like meaning it's a traveling circus now is a
- 19:52traveling circus then. So when I say we, you know, I'm
- 19:55not, I wasn't a competitor, but I think about like, you know,
- 19:58we're parting in the motorhome lot.
- 20:00We're part next to the Presley's every week and like your buddy
- 20:03straighter and then the family, everybody that was part of it
- 20:07then. Like I think it's hard to you
- 20:08just no matter what you do, if you set everything up exactly
- 20:11the way it was back then schedule wise and everything
- 20:14else. I don't, I don't know that that
- 20:16it still doesn't bring back that feeling for us.
- 20:19I don't think just 'cause you can't, you can't replicate
- 20:21something you can try to get. New generations that have their
- 20:24own version of that. I think there's things to take
- 20:27in. I'm, I'm playing devil's
- 20:28advocate a little bit here because I tend to lean towards,
- 20:31to me, like with you, I tend to agree with you that I think if
- 20:33you're going to have a show, you're going to have an event,
- 20:37these to start on on Friday, practice qualifying, whatever.
- 20:41However you want to do a practice on Friday, qualify on
- 20:43Saturday, However that works. But an event each week.
- 20:46Now, on the flip side, I, I don't know how many events we
- 20:48had by the time you retired in O2.
- 20:51I know when you first came in, in 91 to the Cup Series, I think
- 20:55there were 29 points paying races, not 100% on that, but
- 20:59close to it. And if you factor in the clash
- 21:02in the All Star race, let's call it 31 events nowadays, you got
- 21:06what, 38? So you're talking about two
- 21:09months more of time and also the right the sport.
- 21:15I mean, the costs have gone through the roof.
- 21:19So you're talking about two months more time and also two
- 21:21months probably more importantly here, but I mean it all comes
- 21:24down to money, two months more worth of stuff you got to pay
- 21:27for. So I and I don't know, I don't
- 21:29know if I, I assume that cutting it down to a two day deal for
- 21:32the teams help save some expenses and costs.
- 21:35I would think it would have to. I don't know I you.
- 21:38Know. Yeah, it does.
- 21:39Yeah. Let me break you in here.
- 21:40I didn't mean it that was wrong. I was just saying it's a fact of
- 21:45of a big change in our sport and what what happened, what caused
- 21:48that, you know, for better or worse.
- 21:50I mean, I don't, you know, I wasn't saying that.
- 21:52I was just saying, you know, their thing really changed from
- 21:55that. And yeah, it does save a lot of
- 21:56money. It saves a ton of money for the
- 21:58teams. Ricky Believe.
- 21:59I'll tell you. I'll tell you a funny thing
- 22:01about the COVID deal. So my wife and I went to the
- 22:05Atlanta race as the first Atlanta race in 2021.
- 22:11So we're coming out of COVID. We're not.
- 22:14Fully out of it yet, but. Spectators are able to attend.
- 22:16So it was a deal where we bought our tickets and we were like in
- 22:19our own little pod kind of if you want to call it that.
- 22:22Basically they had, they sold, I don't know what capacity of the
- 22:25place they sold, if it was a third, half a quarter, whatever
- 22:29it was, but you could buy tickets and go and sit in your
- 22:33own little area or whatever. But one cool thing they had done
- 22:37was they had Jeff Foxworthy come out and do like stand up comedy
- 22:41on the front stretch for all the fans there before the race.
- 22:45But I remember texting you about this afterward.
- 22:48The parts we could hear were really funny.
- 22:52But because of some COVID deal, they had all the cars that were
- 22:55already lined up on Pit Rd. and throughout Jeff Foxworthy's set.
- 22:59The crews were coming out and firing the things up and revving
- 23:02them and revving them and revving them.
- 23:04And so Jeff Foxworthy's going into a bit and then you you
- 23:07still hear half of it because you're hearing the cars a bit.
- 23:10And I remember texting you. I'm like, I don't remember ever
- 23:12this happened. And like when the cars were
- 23:14lined, when the crews pushed them out on pit Rd. it sat there
- 23:17and it didn't start up again until gentleman starts your
- 23:19driver starts your engines. So I think, I guess that was
- 23:22some COVID deal that just triggered in my brain.
- 23:24Yeah, a lot of things changed, a lot of a lot of procedures when
- 23:27race day changed and weekends changed for that.
- 23:29So they were still working out that deal and Foxworthy was
- 23:31there, I guess. Yeah, I think so.
- 23:35Well, the, the goal though, should be whether it's you get
- 23:40there Friday, you get there Saturday, whatever it stood, it
- 23:42should still feel like I we're we're coming into town and we're
- 23:46taking over this weekend. This is a weekend event.
- 23:48This is an event with not just with the race being the the
- 23:52culmination of it, the peak of it.
- 23:54There should be a whole bunch of other stuff that builds up to
- 23:57it. I'm not saying they're in now,
- 23:58but that should be the just from why I've experienced and
- 24:01witnessed that should be that should be the goal.
- 24:05A couple let's let's circle back to the clash real quick.
- 24:09So I I think one thing that that happens, one thing that has
- 24:15changed is the NFL schedule has expanded.
- 24:18So then the Super Bowl keeps getting pushed further into what
- 24:22was back in your day, the traditional speed weeks, plural
- 24:26territory. So that's had to, that's caused
- 24:28NASCAR to move some things around where the Clash is now.
- 24:31You know, we got the Clash, then Super Bowl happens, then Daytona
- 24:34the next week as opposed to the Clash being on that Sunday
- 24:37before the 500. So if it were me and I'm trying
- 24:40to recreate that speed week thing because I will tell you to
- 24:43me, that was always one of my favorite times on the the NASCAR
- 24:47calendar was every year when we come into Daytona.
- 24:51I would that was always a even just for me.
- 24:54It was a special feeling going through that tunnel for the
- 24:57first time for the start of new season because it's like clean
- 24:59slate. Everything's new, new paint
- 25:02schemes, new teams, new this new that, like it's anything could
- 25:05happen. You have high hopes, all that
- 25:08good stuff. I still have one image in my
- 25:10mind. This had to be from one of your
- 25:11first couple of years in Cup. I don't know who I was riding in
- 25:15with, but we came in through the tunnel at Daytona and it was
- 25:18during practice and it just so happened the right after we came
- 25:21up out of the tunnel, I looked through the window and the first
- 25:23car that came flying by on the track was you.
- 25:26And that was like just a really cool memory to me.
- 25:29And I still, you know, when we went to Daytona, we went as a
- 25:34family first time. We'd been to Daytona for the 500
- 25:37and God, decades, I guess. We went a couple years ago, 23 I
- 25:43think, and it was still cool coming through that tunnel.
- 25:45Of course now they got another tunnel on down there towards
- 25:48turn one that wasn't there when we were there.
- 25:49So that was that was different coming through that one.
- 25:53So if it were me and I'm trying to recreate that old speed week
- 25:56feeling because it just had a different feel to it.
- 25:58And you're trying to make this a week long event.
- 26:02I don't know if if a prime time event on like a Monday works.
- 26:06I guess we'll get a little experiment tomorrow with the
- 26:08Wednesday event with the Clash. I I would look at maybe if
- 26:11you're going to move it back to Daytona, I would look at doing
- 26:13something like that. Maybe it's a this kicks off the
- 26:16week and it's kind of like what Dale Junior said.
- 26:19It's an appetizer. One thing was interesting.
- 26:22I saw this this graphic floating around.
- 26:24Now, granted, this is the Internet and I didn't vet it, so
- 26:26I'm going to assume it's it's right.
- 26:28It was all of Dale Earnhardt seniors finishes in the class
- 26:31from 1980 all the way through 2001.
- 26:33And what stuck out was not that, you know, he felt he finished.
- 26:37He finished 12th once. Other than that, he never
- 26:39finished worse than 4th and more often than not he won.
- 26:43But what was interesting was the number of times he wasn't in the
- 26:47clash. So think about that.
- 26:49So if this graphic is is correct, and I'm sorry I didn't
- 26:52vet it, but let's just assume it is because this is this, it
- 26:55probably is because this is how it worked back then.
- 26:57If you want to poll the year before you got in, otherwise you
- 27:01didn't or there would be like a how you made it in 89 where
- 27:05there's there was little like kind of AI don't want to call it
- 27:08a not a wild card, but you would have like a way.
- 27:10There was a secondary way guys could get a spot and you can one
- 27:14guy with the second round fastest each week and they draw
- 27:16at the end of the year for one person.
- 27:18So yeah, one other person could get in.
- 27:20Yeah. And so that's big.
- 27:21That's that's another thing that that changed a long time ago.
- 27:23There used to be a couple rounds of of qualify, but for the most
- 27:28part, you want to pull you're in it.
- 27:29You didn't or you weren't second round fastest and you got lucky
- 27:33with the draw, you weren't in it.
- 27:34So if this this graphics right, Earnhardt was in it in 80,
- 27:38missed it in 8182, ran 83, missed 8485, missed 89 and 90,
- 27:45missed 9899 and 2000. So if you go back to the old
- 27:50format, you run the risk of some of your stars or in that case
- 27:54your biggest star not being in the event that you're kicking
- 27:57off your season with. So I don't think you can go back
- 28:00to, I think you can go back to the format.
- 28:03I don't think you want to set up a deal where from a competitive
- 28:06standpoint, I like it the old way.
- 28:08I think it was cool that it was that way, but this is a
- 28:10different time. I don't think you can have your
- 28:12first prime time network TV show of the year and run the risk of
- 28:16not having your your biggest stars.
- 28:18I What do you think? No, you're exactly right.
- 28:20It's a different time for that. You can't what was the first?
- 28:24What do we have like 8 guys in it one year or ten guys, 8 guys.
- 28:29It was I it was pretty low number, maybe the first couple
- 28:32years. I forget what the number was.
- 28:34But anyhow, you can't. Yeah, it's a different deal.
- 28:36It's a different era. What we're doing right now is
- 28:38totally different. A lot of things.
- 28:40And there's no way we can just have this shootout with just the
- 28:43pole winners from last year. It it wouldn't work.
- 28:46And you're exactly right, Rick. And we don't, you know, there's
- 28:48not enough guys in it to to make that draw for TV.
- 28:51You know, it's fun for everybody being there or fun for the guys.
- 28:56It's fun for the guys that get in because they know they're
- 28:59only a handful, right. Everybody else is sitting over
- 29:01the garage watching and wishing they were you right now.
- 29:04But those days are over with. I mean, so the way, yeah, I
- 29:07think that part, no matter where they'd race it, I think that
- 29:10part they kind of got to leave the way they got it right now,
- 29:13you know, try to get as many guys in as they can.
- 29:16I think that and I think that's and we're we're kind of saying
- 29:19it, but I'll, I'll just lay it out there again.
- 29:20I think that's really the biggest difference there.
- 29:22You can I'm cool with it coming back to Daytona, if they want to
- 29:25do that, whatever they want to do that, that's all good.
- 29:27I think the one thing that is just fundamentally different is
- 29:30back in your time, it was a cool event.
- 29:33It was a a cool little badge of honor to be in it.
- 29:36That means you had you did something cool the year before.
- 29:38So that gives you the chance to participate in this cool event.
- 29:41But it wasn't the big like this is the first prime time big
- 29:46event. It was a cool like like it was
- 29:49like a cool little mini race, like a heat race almost or a
- 29:51little Sprint race to to kick off the season.
- 29:54And I don't remember. I don't know this because I
- 29:57there's some of the early Bush clashes I've never seen like the
- 29:59ones from before I was born when it first started.
- 30:02I don't know that I've probably seen one of them, two of them,
- 30:04but not all of them. But I also would guess there
- 30:07probably weren't rec fests back then.
- 30:09There probably weren't, you know, a lot of torn up race cars
- 30:11in those deals. I don't remember there being
- 30:13much of A torn up many torn up race cars in your day, to be
- 30:16honest. That's something else that I
- 30:18think has changed a little bit in terms of it being at.
- 30:21Daytona I will tell you one time we would when you'd been in the,
- 30:27the the Clash, you would. They'd always do a dinner the
- 30:30night before and pretty big deal.
- 30:32They give you gifts and all kinds of things.
- 30:34And most of the time, a lot of times that's where you drew a
- 30:36pill to see where you'd start, right.
- 30:39And we would all get up there and we'd have to talk in front
- 30:42of the audience. And, and anyhow, one year we're
- 30:45up there, we're talking and I got to related about being in
- 30:48the class year before. And I was telling them about the
- 30:52thing. The race got started and we were
- 30:53racing along there and talking about what it meant to be in the
- 30:57class of what, how kind of how prestigious it was.
- 31:00And to win the class was a big deal, man.
- 31:02I mean, it was a big deal to win that thing.
- 31:04It's a big deal just to be in it.
- 31:05And if you want it, it was a really big deal.
- 31:08Well, so guys would take chances and do things you didn't see
- 31:11them do normally really run along.
- 31:13I don't know, maybe halfway through the race, you know, and
- 31:16I'm too little long. We're going down the backstretch
- 31:18and doing the drafting deal. And I look up and guys go like
- 31:24four or five wide in front of me, right?
- 31:28I'm by myself, right with this, all these guys, we're all
- 31:31together. And all of a sudden guys swing
- 31:33down, I look up and they're they're right dead in front of
- 31:35me. Four or five wide.
- 31:37I'm not sure. What's the four or five?
- 31:39Well, there's a dude behind me that was in the draft also had a
- 31:43little push and he went by me and went to the very bottom.
- 31:47And this is before you go, but go below the yellow line deal,
- 31:50right penalty. He gets to he he's going.
- 31:53So he's going to pass these dudes at the end of the back
- 31:55straight away, right? He gets below the yellow line.
- 31:59No way he's going to make it. There's this absolutely no way
- 32:03he's going to make it because we're we're at the end of the
- 32:05straightaway and this and of course we go in and turn into 3
- 32:09into turn 3 and he's on the apron basically and comes up and
- 32:14guys get wiped out right. It don't work.
- 32:16And the thing of it is this driver was probably the most
- 32:20controlled driver, one of the most controlled ever raced
- 32:23against one of the best I've raced with one of the safest to
- 32:26race around one that you wouldn't I didn't I could I
- 32:29would be on any side of this guy, not worried about him
- 32:32wrecking me. I would, you know, very secure
- 32:36race around this guy and everybody else felt the same,
- 32:38same way about him and his whole career.
- 32:40He's never like it. But because it was a it was a
- 32:43the, the shootout of the class, you know, he did something that
- 32:47typically he doesn't do right. And just because you wanted to
- 32:50try to win that race. It was wild.
- 32:52And I remember sitting there telling the story, a reporter,
- 32:55somebody asked, well, who was it?
- 32:56Who was it as well? I don't really want to say his
- 32:59name, you know, but I but sat beside me was Mark.
- 33:03Mark. I said, do you hear anything
- 33:04about that, Mark? And he started grinning and
- 33:07laughing, right. So it was our buddy Mark Martin
- 33:11that done that right? And it was it was funny as the
- 33:14Dickens the way it come off. But you know, again, Mark, one
- 33:17of the best ever was and one of the guys who just didn't do
- 33:20stuff like that, but he did it because it wasn't it was a
- 33:23shootout or the clash, right. And what was on the line for
- 33:26that? So pretty cool.
- 33:28He was, from what I remember just watching, he was about as
- 33:30clean and as anybody out there. I don't even remember that.
- 33:33I don't ever remember him starting anything.
- 33:37I mean, I'm sure every driver at some point, you, you, you, you
- 33:39make a mistake or whatever and you start something.
- 33:41But he's the one that's like, yeah, I don't remember that.
- 33:44That's amazing. If he if he if Mark Rechi, it
- 33:47was a bad mistake on his party. You really, really, really had
- 33:50to screw up to get him mad. And even then that that Mark was
- 33:53never one team to retaliate. You know, he would talk about it
- 33:56afterwards. So yeah, he's one of the good
- 33:59ones, man. Let me ask you this.
- 34:02You've talked about, you referenced it earlier, 1989,
- 34:06that was your first Daytona 500. I think, I think for you that's
- 34:10probably maybe a standout moment of your Cup career,
- 34:13understandably so. Like I, I, I think that's, I
- 34:16think you and I have talked about this before.
- 34:18And if you had to pick one moment for you, I think that's
- 34:20the one you you've talked about before as being like the, IT was
- 34:24just a really, really cool moment for you and your career.
- 34:27The Clash, Correct me if I'm wrong, unless you can tell the
- 34:30story was the clash not there? Wasn't that the reason you ended
- 34:33up with with a ride for the 500? Tell that story.
- 34:37Well the year before I had subbed for Buddy Baker in two
- 34:39races, 1988. I'd never been in a cup car
- 34:42before and Buddy got hurt and so my first time ever in a cup car
- 34:46was in the 88. Red Baron owes will bail it
- 34:50Bristol. Then the next week I ran
- 34:52Darlington for buddy and relief for buddy.
- 34:54So in those days we had two two days of qualifying first round,
- 34:58second round, everybody qualify first round, second day from
- 35:0221st all the way back to 50th or whatever.
- 35:05Those positions weren't filled. So you we had a second round
- 35:07qualifying deal. So everybody would would qualify
- 35:11second day, right Re qualify for like 21st back and whoever is
- 35:17the fastest of course would start 21st and and so on.
- 35:19Or you could stand on your time gets gets gets really gets
- 35:23really confusing. But at the end of the year,
- 35:25everybody had second round fastest during the races, which
- 35:30I did at Darlington. They put your name in a hat.
- 35:34And when they go to the Waldorf for the points deal, the awards
- 35:37banquet, they would reach down and pull that name out of the
- 35:39hat. And that would be the alternate
- 35:41or that would be the next AD or the add on ad in for the Bush
- 35:45class for the next season. And they pulled my name out of
- 35:49the hat right from winning the second round fastest at
- 35:52Darlington. That's how I got in to be in the
- 35:54Bush class. Well, The funny thing is Ricky,
- 35:56in those days, this thing was so prestigious.
- 35:58Every had a lot of guys call me. Lot of team owners, I mean
- 36:02prestigious team loaders, man called me want me to drive their
- 36:06car because let's and let's just set the scene for everybody.
- 36:09You filled in those two races in 88 for buddy.
- 36:12That was it. You didn't have a cup ride for
- 36:1489. You're still in the what was
- 36:16then the Bush Grand National series, what is now the the
- 36:19O'Reilly series. So you so that's that's why I'm
- 36:23going to say you, you know that they got you in the 500 because
- 36:26you were still full time Bush guy at that.
- 36:28Point right right and again the thing was so prestigious you
- 36:33know had all these owners call me when we drive one of their
- 36:36cars in the Bush some of them couple of their driver had won a
- 36:40pole so he wasn't in the Bush class and a couple of them were
- 36:42in the Bush class. They wanted to put another car
- 36:44right just because the thing was so prestigious and I ended up
- 36:49going and and names that everybody knows too, right.
- 36:52So I ended up I ended up doing it with Travis Carter.
- 36:55Travis had just split up the year before with Harry Ganton
- 36:58Skull. Harry Ganton skull left and they
- 37:00went with Leo Jackson. Travis was left with the race
- 37:03team without a sponsor, but he had a little money and had
- 37:06another guy that bought into the team.
- 37:09I decided to do it with Travis for a couple reasons.
- 37:11Number one, at that time Travis was really hungry man.
- 37:14He he was really wanting to sue the world.
- 37:16His race team was OK. You know, that was one thing.
- 37:19The second thing was he was going to, we were going to run
- 37:22the Bush class. He was, we were going to run the
- 37:24Daytona 500. He gave me that and he gave me
- 37:27the next three races. He guaranteed me the class, the
- 37:29Daytona 500 and we run the next three Cup races.
- 37:32No other team owner would do that or could do that.
- 37:34So that was the reason we did that.
- 37:36And of course the rest of it's history, man, we go down there
- 37:39and the cars just flawless all weekend.
- 37:41We run good. The Clash, we finished, I don't
- 37:44know, 5th, 6th or 6th or 7th. You know, the 500 we get in that
- 37:48thing, we qualify. I think it was like 7th for
- 37:51that, finished 6th or 7th, LED a lot of the race.
- 37:53You know, that was the race that really got me known to I guess
- 37:57America because it was a broadcast race on CBS.
- 38:00But most of the people in the garage by that point knew who I
- 38:02was. But that just kind of
- 38:03solidified, solidified me in the in the Cup garage as far as that
- 38:07goes. But it still took a couple of
- 38:09years to get going in the Cup Series.
- 38:11So your first, obviously you had practice in qualifying and you'd
- 38:15run Daytona in the Bush Series, but your first competitive laps
- 38:20against other cars on the track was in the 1989 Clash at
- 38:24Daytona, right? What do you remember?
- 38:27And I know we're going back a long way here, but do you
- 38:29remember kind of how how you were feeling coming into that
- 38:32and getting out there on that track going against those guys
- 38:37at that level? I mean, competing in a Daytona
- 38:39in a Cup car for the first time or it was not really is it's
- 38:42nothing stand out of just the I mean, what what do you remember
- 38:46about that running that Class 1? Of the silliest things, Ricky,
- 38:50we would in those days, the Bush Grand National cars, we would
- 38:55show up that racetrack, you know, that Saturday, Friday or
- 38:58Saturday, whatever it is of the weekend, of all that stuff going
- 39:02on. They would park us on the
- 39:03backstretch right outside Turn 3 up on the grass all like there,
- 39:09there's a racetrack, there's a wall, there's a fence and right
- 39:12behind that on in the, in the going into end of the back
- 39:14straight away was a field. And that's where we'd all park
- 39:17and that's where they do inspections on our Bush cars out
- 39:20in the Dankin field, right. And there's some, there was some
- 39:23grandstands back there, like metal grandstands that I
- 39:26remember a lot. State police would be back
- 39:28there. They they let state police
- 39:30working the race be back there. Well, whatever, we were all back
- 39:34there with the Bush series. We would all get sit there and
- 39:37watch the the Bush clash, right, And also watch the ARCA race
- 39:41backer. So everybody in that backfield
- 39:43connected with the Bush series. We'd all be back in the
- 39:45grandstands doing that, right watching that.
- 39:48And the funniest part about that Bush class is I remember going
- 39:53circling the tracker a time or two and, and looking up, going
- 39:56into, into the back straight away.
- 39:57And I looked over there and I saw all my Bush people, right?
- 40:00And, and which was so cool. And I'm like, well, this is
- 40:03cool, man. They're getting to watch.
- 40:04They're cheering for me now. And they, and, and they were, a
- 40:07lot of those guys were cheering up and cheering for me when that
- 40:09race got going and doing all that stuff that was, I guess
- 40:13still worried, still worried about.
- 40:15My competitors, I was worried about my, my buddies up there
- 40:18being proud of me for being in the friggin race.
- 40:21But you know that, that, that particular race, it was just, it
- 40:27was just keep I, I remember that race, keep my nose clean.
- 40:30You know what I mean, 'cause we didn't have the, the one good
- 40:33car, right? And I had to keep my nose clean
- 40:36because this car was exceptionally fast.
- 40:39It handled exceptionally well, right?
- 40:41And I knew that this car had to make it for the next week for
- 40:45the 500. And and then I can tell you more
- 40:47about the 500. Remember different things,
- 40:49learning from Dale, learning from Kenny, doing a lot of
- 40:52things that I did not know, man, I learned more from, I'll
- 40:55probably learn more from Earnhardt Schrader in that race.
- 40:57As far as what you do at Daytona and Talladega, then five or six
- 41:02years I'd run Bush Series races and what I'd run in the Bush
- 41:05class the year before or anything else.
- 41:07I just learned a lot of things that day and that that enabled
- 41:10to be a lot more aggressive. Finally, when I thought I had it
- 41:12figured out, is able just hold that baby wide open and just
- 41:15start, you know, swinging and dice with those guys and that
- 41:18that's what we did. Yeah, that I'm glad you you
- 41:22pointed out the keeping your nose clean.
- 41:24I mean that's something else. Talk about a different time,
- 41:26different air. I mean, your car in the class,
- 41:29that car had to run the 500 seven days later.
- 41:32So you couldn't just, you couldn't just go out there and,
- 41:35you know, bust it up or anything.
- 41:37Yeah, now he had another car, but it wasn't nearly as good as
- 41:40this car, right? I'll tell you I, I, I was going
- 41:45to wait till it got in. I was, I don't know what I was
- 41:47searching for some some sort of old memorabilia the other night
- 41:50on on eBay and I whatever I searched Rick mass sheet metal
- 41:56or something and something popped up that I'd not seen
- 42:01before and it was somebody was selling.
- 42:04I don't know if they took, I'm assuming they took it.
- 42:05They're old photographer or something.
- 42:07I don't know, or they just found this image and they're selling
- 42:10themselves now. But either way, they got a few
- 42:12bucks out of me. It's a picture of you Earnhardt
- 42:15and Schrader in the 500 coming through the trioval and it's a
- 42:18picture. It's an angle I'd never seen
- 42:20before. So I went ahead and bought a
- 42:23copy of it and they hadn't gotten here yet.
- 42:25But, but I thought, but I thought that that just I for no
- 42:30other reason other than just I saw it and I was like, Darren,
- 42:32I've never seen that, never seen that angle, never seen it on the
- 42:35Internet. And we got a ton of pictures and
- 42:37stuff at your house. And I've got a lot of stuff here
- 42:40from, from granddaddy, from your dad, my granddaddy who's who
- 42:45left us a number of years ago. But I've got a lot of his stuff
- 42:47here so that maybe there's a copy of that in these stacks of
- 42:50photos I got here. I don't know.
- 42:52But either way, I got one on the way.
- 42:53So as a special moment for for us and the family, that whole
- 42:57that whole experience was was really cool.
- 43:00Unsponsored car, too. In that Bush clash in the
- 43:03Daytona 500 out there. Lead unsponsored with a rookie.
- 43:06With Earnhardt and Schrader, that's that's pretty cool,
- 43:10pretty good. Yeah.
- 43:10If we if we'd have listened to Hickey or our gas man, we'd have
- 43:14won the race. You know, I mean, we pitted for
- 43:16fuel like Earnhardt and Schrader.
- 43:18Darryl ended up winning and he didn't pit for fuel.
- 43:21And Hickey kept trying to tell Travis, you know, we we can make
- 43:24it. We can make it with Travis's,
- 43:26you know, we've been out front all day.
- 43:27The car had been out on TV all day.
- 43:29And he didn't want to embarrass yourself.
- 43:30He's trying to track the sponsor.
- 43:32So he pitted to be sure, or for certainty to finish the race and
- 43:37I supported that decision then. I still support that.
- 43:39But you know, look back at it. We could have won that thing,
- 43:41man. We could have won it but.
- 43:43Yeah, it was all good. You can do that in sports and
- 43:47life and everything. You can sit there and go back
- 43:48and try to retroactively say, well, if we had just done this
- 43:51and done just done this, but it's hard to, it's hard not to
- 43:54do it. There's a lot of near misses
- 43:57that they they throw to 500. I mean, man, man, man, we can
- 44:01talk for, for Earnhardt for 20 years about those near misses
- 44:04and everybody else. But to to be able to say, you
- 44:08know, which we could have won 500, that's pretty cool deal,
- 44:11right? So, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 44:14Well, you fit. I mean, you ran a lot better and
- 44:18that, go ahead. I'm sorry.
- 44:19I thought you ran a lot better in the 500 than I ever did.
- 44:21So you know you got nothing to be ashamed of there.
- 44:24Yeah, yeah, so all those things culminate back to the original
- 44:27perimal premise of this podcast is a book or your question about
- 44:31the Bush class, where should it be all those reasons in in our
- 44:35minds or my mind is like, that's why it should be at Daytona.
- 44:37But we're at a different time now.
- 44:39We're in a different area. We do things completely
- 44:41different, you know, so I'm looking actually looking forward
- 44:45to big deal to Madhouse Man. I want to see those guys get the
- 44:48rubbing and knocking and beating.
- 44:49I want to see them get mad at each other, right.
- 44:51Probably won't, but it happens at the madhouse.
- 44:54Yeah, I. I enjoyed it last year.
- 44:56I'm looking forward to it again this year.
- 44:59I think I, I know there's the one option on the table as well.
- 45:02Should they just scrap the clash all together and then use that
- 45:06event for something else? And I, I don't know, I don't
- 45:08agree with that. I, I think you, I think it's
- 45:12still a good thing And, and they're, and they're trying
- 45:15stuff with it. I the first year of the LA
- 45:18Coliseum deal was from an entertainment perspective is
- 45:22interesting. The racing itself wasn't much,
- 45:24but again, like you said, they're trying something that
- 45:27was still, I think we're kind of coming out of that era where
- 45:31they're they're still willing, they're still trying stuff,
- 45:34which is great. I think they should keep doing
- 45:35that. I think that was still very much
- 45:37in that air of like we're throwing everything against the
- 45:39wall and seeing what sticks, you know, like just trying
- 45:42everything under the sun. So, but I'm, I, I am looking
- 45:47forward to the question. I think what what we've as we've
- 45:49sat here and talked about, I didn't have a strong feeling on
- 45:51it either way. I feel like the way to go with
- 45:53it is move it back to Daytona, have a shorter event and have
- 45:56you have it kick off your your speed week and try to get back
- 45:59to that full speed week deal. But I ain't running things I'm
- 46:03going to watch wherever it is, so it doesn't really matter.
- 46:05Oh, yeah, hopefully The thing is, is great.
- 46:07Hopefully it's great. We have to have a conversation.
- 46:09So we move it, you know, hopefully everything goes good
- 46:11enough to where, yeah, this where it needs to be, this where
- 46:14it needs to stay, right. That's what you want when you
- 46:16try all this stuff. I mean, you just don't throw it
- 46:18up these little stuff out there and just see how it works.
- 46:21Your your goal is to hopefully think, man, this is when it's
- 46:24over with, like, all right, this what we're going to keep doing,
- 46:26right. So, you know, maybe that's
- 46:28what'll happen. That's what I'd like to see
- 46:29happen, really. So.
- 46:30Yeah. Yeah, and I like the they're
- 46:33they've shown they're they're willing to to change.
- 46:35Well, they felt I mean, we referenced it last week, but
- 46:37they made it official today that the Roval is now officially
- 46:39going back to the Oval track at Charlotte in the the fall race,
- 46:43400 mile race instead of the old 500 mile race, which which is
- 46:47kind of interesting. I don't have strong feelings on
- 46:50that either way. But you know, just thought those
- 46:53it's kind of an interesting, interesting little, little side
- 46:56note, But they've they adjusted. They tried the robo thing.
- 46:59That was back when that that particular generation of cars
- 47:02were putting on a pretty good show on a road course, whether
- 47:04it was, you know, whether you agree with it from a traditional
- 47:07standpoint or not, I understood why they were trying it.
- 47:09The robo was kind of a interesting thing there for a
- 47:12little bit, but these current cars don't put on as good as
- 47:14they've actually put on a much better show on the bigger tracks
- 47:17like like Charlotte. So it's it's it's try stuff, but
- 47:21also, you know, adjust accordingly as as you go.
- 47:24That's one thing. And during your air, I mean, to
- 47:27add a new track or switch a date around or something that just,
- 47:30it didn't happen very often. You know, I'm trying to think
- 47:32back. You came in full time in 91.
- 47:36I bet there wasn't a change till I think New Hampshire came into
- 47:39play in 93, India 94 and then I don't know, Texas 97.
- 47:47Vegas was around there. So I guess they started coming
- 47:50in, but still, it wasn't like pretty much there were a lot of
- 47:53tracks that had two dates and oftentimes the dates were around
- 47:57the the same time. Those didn't move around either,
- 47:59so. Yeah.
- 48:01And again, it was probably, I really thought about it like
- 48:04that was probably one of the reasons Indy was such a big deal
- 48:06'cause we didn't add dates, we didn't add races, right?
- 48:09It just, you know, you didn't have it.
- 48:11You had the same schedule every year after year.
- 48:13And so when you would add a deal, it was a big deal.
- 48:16I mean, when they opened Texas, when Bruton built Texas, man,
- 48:18that was a big deal to go to Texas and that new facility to
- 48:22go to Indy was a new deal. I mean, it was a big deal.
- 48:24All these things are big deals in our day.
- 48:26Yeah, yeah, for sure. Well, I'm looking forward to the
- 48:30clash. I'm looking forward to the
- 48:32season getting started. I hope the clash happens again.
- 48:34I'm just going to assume that there's not going to be any
- 48:36weather. But actually I was one one other
- 48:39clash thing. There's just so many little cool
- 48:42things they they that they would do in your day.
- 48:44The posters that they would make each year for the class.
- 48:46You still got those hanging up in the house.
- 48:49I loved here with one point. Last couple years they recreated
- 48:52with the newer drivers. They recreated the my favorite
- 48:55one that you're on and that's where it just says Bush clash on
- 48:58the poster. And then all you guys are kind
- 49:00of like some of you are hanging off of the letter, some of
- 49:02you're standing up against it. I think I think you and
- 49:04Earnhardt are both on the the L in the in clash or one of the
- 49:09letters on the bottom where you're kind of leaned up against
- 49:11it. And then he's, you know, makes
- 49:13it look like he's sitting on top of it.
- 49:14So cool little things like that, like that's, it's, it kind of
- 49:18make those events kind of neat, you know?
- 49:20If you're, if you're, yeah, it was the big competitors, neat
- 49:23man. They always give us neat deals,
- 49:25right? One year we got now I think 2
- 49:27years we got blood shootout shotguns, right?
- 49:31And Gray Bud shootout engraved in there.
- 49:33And then let's see, we got a oh, we got a Budweiser.
- 49:37What was that thing called? Kegerator.
- 49:39No, you it was a Bush. Can many I don't want to call it
- 49:46a mini refrigerator. It was not a full size
- 49:48refrigerator. Obviously it was in the shape of
- 49:50a big Bush beer can. But you know, everybody knows
- 49:53what a mini fridge looks like this like nowadays.
- 49:55It was probably three times the size of a of a mini fridge, at
- 49:59least twice the size of a mini fridge and there's a giant like
- 50:03must say, I think that one you might have gotten that from the
- 50:0789 clash. To be honest with you.
- 50:09I feel like I I could be wrong about that.
- 50:12I know one thing that I don't know where that fridge was in
- 50:17your house for a number of years, but somehow or another I
- 50:19commandeered it and it went with me to college.
- 50:22And that was my refrigerator in my bedroom of my apartment in
- 50:26college for for a couple years. It was a nice little
- 50:29conversation piece for you've. Been a popular dude then.
- 50:32Well, we got a keggerator when we got the Budweiser.
- 50:34Real, real nice keggerator too. One year.
- 50:37That's right, yeah. Yeah, that's in, that's in your.
- 50:40House We always got a nice Bush ring with diamond studs and all
- 50:43that. It was it was a very neat deal.
- 50:45Belt buckles. It's a very neat deal to be in
- 50:47it as a, as a, as a competitor man.
- 50:51Yeah, well, we're looking forward to watching it, looking
- 50:53forward to getting the season going.
- 50:56I'm glad that. Well, I'm glad my daughter
- 51:00didn't build up the immunity he were talking about.
- 51:02I'm fine with my decision there. I'm glad your thumb is still
- 51:05attached to your hand. I'm glad a bird didn't didn't
- 51:08kill mom and the cats today. I'm glad NASCAR's back.
- 51:12Glad Mascara. Heck, yeah.
- 51:14Heck, yeah. All right, Dad.
- 51:16Well, no hospital stays this week.
- 51:18I'll keep a better eye on my child this week.
- 51:20And hopefully we get to talk about some some fun NASCAR stuff
- 51:24when we're back here next week. Yep, sounds good to me.
- 51:27Ricky sounds good. All right well, everybody follow

- 51:55first appearance by Mascat. I'm actually kind of surprised
- 51:57it took. Yeah.
