- 0:08Welcome back in everybody here to the
- 0:09postcamp pod at Auburn Undercover.
- 0:11Nathan King joined by Patrick Bingham
- 0:14here inside of Neville Arena where on a
- 0:16quick turnaround on Tuesday night, it
- 0:19was a maybe a bit of a hangover
- 0:21performance regardless of however you
- 0:23would describe it for Auburn coming off
- 0:24of that loss to Alabama on Saturday. It
- 0:27was it was a disappointing one. It was a
- 0:29frustrating one here at home as Auburn
- 0:32falls to Vanderbilt 84-76.
- 0:35This is the first time in a decade that
- 0:37Auburn basketball has lost on its home
- 0:39floor to Vanderbilt. Have to go
- 0:41>> say 20 26 is the new 2016. It was 17.
- 0:44Oh, okay.
- 0:45>> Yeah, that All right. Well, we'll just
- 0:46we'll just we'll just scratch that one
- 0:48in post. Uh you have to go all the way
- 0:49back to when I was a freshman at Auburn.
- 0:51Uh the last time that this team lost to
- 0:53Vanderbilt. This is a much different
- 0:54Vanderbilt team, much different
- 0:55Vanderbilt program. Uh this Vanderbilt
- 0:58team is in the top 15 analytically um in
- 1:00in a lot of metrics. This is a uh this
- 1:03was no doubt a quad one game for Auburn.
- 1:05This is not um a a big upset or anything
- 1:08like that. Vanderbilt came into this
- 1:10game ranked while Auburn was not. You
- 1:12know, Vanderbilt had a bigger record.
- 1:13All of those things though, Patrick,
- 1:14that I just said make this a little bit
- 1:17more painful for Auburn. And that's what
- 1:18Steve Pearl talked about after the game
- 1:20because you had a couple games here on
- 1:23your home floor. It already it already
- 1:25hurts to lose on your home floor, but
- 1:26when you feel like you could get a
- 1:28couple games for your resume and a
- 1:29couple wins that would really help you
- 1:31out here in SEC play and you don't get
- 1:32them, it's all the more painful. Um, and
- 1:34a couple different types of losses.
- 1:36Alabama was the defense
- 1:37>> and and I don't know about you from your
- 1:39vantage point down on the floor, but
- 1:40really Auburn's offense for most of the
- 1:42game. I know they ended up with 76
- 1:43points, but they just look like a shell
- 1:45of themselves for for a lot of this
- 1:46game. Yeah, I think the biggest thing
- 1:48that stood out to me um especially
- 1:50because it was my end of the floor the
- 1:52first half, the offense was just the
- 1:54layups. That was kind of the biggest
- 1:56stat to me was I I forget, but it was
- 1:58like 11 of 20ome.
- 1:59>> Yeah, 11 of 27 to end the game. One of
- 2:0210 in the first half at the rim.
- 2:03>> That was it. Yes, I remember that tweet
- 2:05from you and it was just they could get
- 2:07nothing going in the paint. And when I
- 2:09mean that's like the big thing for this
- 2:10team is driving down and either making
- 2:12that layup or getting a foul. And I
- 2:14mean, I thought it was a good game plan
- 2:15by Vanderbilt of like we're gonna take
- 2:17the pain away and dare you to try to
- 2:18make threes and or made a couple, but it
- 2:22wasn't like anything more than they've
- 2:23really been doing. And um that combined
- 2:27with Keshan Hall just not making a lot
- 2:29of shots um just really caused a problem
- 2:32for Auburn today.
- 2:33>> Yeah, even before Keshan Hall uh was was
- 2:36essentially I I say benched, there's a
- 2:38lot more nuance with it than that with
- 2:39about 12 minutes left. Even before that,
- 2:41he was three of 13 from the floor. uh 0
- 2:43of eight from from two-point range
- 2:45because he was three of five from from
- 2:47deep. But yeah, I mean in the first half
- 2:48as Patrick mentioned um you Auburn kept
- 2:50attacking the lane and and Steam Pearl
- 2:52said after the game he's like, you know,
- 2:54maybe we should have gotten some more
- 2:55calls here and there and he said that
- 2:56that frustration sort of boiled over. Uh
- 2:59Vanderbilt ends up leading by as many as
- 3:0115 in the second half. Auburn has a
- 3:02rally um down the stretch. They go from
- 3:04shooting really really poorly um to to
- 3:07having some some opportunities down the
- 3:08stretch. which I thought Todd Pedifer
- 3:09did a really good job of sort of
- 3:11speeding up the pace of the game and
- 3:13sort of dictating things in the second
- 3:14half. Um but they they had an
- 3:16opportunity. They got it down to four.
- 3:18Um got it down to you could have gotten
- 3:20it down to two with with another stop
- 3:22and Tyler Tanner who was phenomenal for
- 3:24Vanderbilt makes a big three there
- 3:26>> at the end. There was some back and
- 3:28forth toward the end of the game, but
- 3:29really it was a matter of just
- 3:30Vanderbilt just made their free throws.
- 3:32It was it was an elongated game.
- 3:33>> They went off the top of my head 20 for
- 3:3623. I think one guy missed two and I
- 3:39think there's one other miss in the
- 3:40second half.
- 3:41>> Yeah, they were 26 of 30 from the line
- 3:43for the game. Tyler Tanner himself who
- 3:45who had 25.6 assists uh was nine of 10
- 3:49from the foul line in the last 3 minutes
- 3:51of the game. So, it's pretty good stuff
- 3:52from him. But let's talk about the
- 3:54Keshan Hall thing. Uh because there's a
- 3:55couple like individual moments in this
- 3:56game that people are wanting to to touch
- 3:58on. Uh Keshan Hall gets a technical foul
- 4:01uh which we'll we'll talk about a little
- 4:02later because Stephen Pearl had some
- 4:03things to say about uh Auburn's emotions
- 4:07over the past couple games. But Keshan
- 4:08Hall gets a technical foul. Um and two
- 4:11minutes later he actually hits a three
- 4:12after that. Um but two minutes later he
- 4:14he's benched and doesn't come back for
- 4:16the rest of the game.
- 4:17>> But as I wouldn't say I've been getting
- 4:19in Twitter arguments with anybody, but
- 4:21as I sort of pointed out on on social
- 4:23media a while ago, somebody said, you
- 4:24know, what what a terrible, you know,
- 4:27decision by by Stephen or whatever.
- 4:28Well, Auburn outsc scored Vanderbilt the
- 4:30rest of the game.
- 4:30>> Um, and Keshan Hall was a team low minus
- 4:3412 for the game, which that's just, you
- 4:35know, plus minus. When he was on the
- 4:36floor, Auburn was outscored by 12 over
- 4:38the course of the uh of the game. It
- 4:40proved to be the right decision,
- 4:41Patrick, as we're still in this
- 4:44situation where you're trying to weigh
- 4:46what Steven Pearl talked about after the
- 4:47Alabama game, which is your better
- 4:49players have to defend. Keshan Hall was
- 4:51was just getting toasted on defense in
- 4:53this game and it ended up being a better
- 4:55lineup down the stretch um to to try to
- 4:57get back in the game without him.
- 4:58>> And that's like that's just the like
- 5:00consistent thing with Steven all year is
- 5:02like he will take you out. Like it's
- 5:04like it's not like you can't even test
- 5:06the waters cuz he's proven time and time
- 5:08again like even for it was like one
- 5:10possession at towards the end of the
- 5:12Alabama game he got mad at it might have
- 5:14been after that three that Aiden hit. He
- 5:16took Tahad right out and it was just
- 5:18like he did it again I guess with Keshan
- 5:20over a longer period of the game. But
- 5:22again it's like even if you wanted to
- 5:24argue like yes Keshan's one of your
- 5:26better scorers, maybe he could have made
- 5:27a couple more baskets in the very end if
- 5:30you get it from the teens all the way to
- 5:33a fourpoint deficit. Like it's kind of
- 5:35hard to argue against who was on the
- 5:37floor in that moment. But yeah, at the
- 5:40end of the day it's just it like you're
- 5:43missing shots. I mean I think the
- 5:45biggest thing is he was I mean he said
- 5:47he wanted to go with the players gave
- 5:48him the best chance to win but then he
- 5:50was like our offense was just not in
- 5:51sync and I think the plus minus stat
- 5:52point
- 5:53>> that is the thing that's a good point by
- 5:54you that's the other thing to point out
- 5:55is going all the way back to the first
- 5:56half you know Steam Pearl said uh you
- 5:58know when Keshan Hall was in the game
- 6:00their offense just wasn't in sync and it
- 6:01was really they picked things up they
- 6:03did a better job in second half Todd
- 6:04Pifer being aggressive was was a big
- 6:06part of that. Um the other the other
- 6:08thing that happened with the officiating
- 6:10was and I thought I I said it during the
- 6:12game that that this is the one where
- 6:13Steven Pearl was going to blow. Um and
- 6:15he really didn't that much.
- 6:17>> No, he didn't even you know there's been
- 6:18games several games actually where he's
- 6:21hit the video board so like the little
- 6:23thing on the sideline so hard that the
- 6:25whole panel's gone out. But we didn't
- 6:27have any like no pixels were lost.
- 6:29>> No. and he maintains that. So I thought
- 6:32he was gonna he was going to crash out
- 6:33when I don't know if you saw it but Pat
- 6:35Adams like gave him the handsaw. I was
- 6:37like that is not going to go over very
- 6:40well at all. And I had some people on
- 6:41social media and I thought it was a
- 6:42decent point. They were like
- 6:44>> Auburn was was just trudging through
- 6:45like an 11-point deficit at that point.
- 6:47And people were like maybe he should
- 6:49maybe he should get thrown out like like
- 6:50get get some energy back in in the team.
- 6:53He ends up getting a technical foul. Um,
- 6:54and I promise I'm going somewhere with
- 6:56this, but Steam Pearl said after the
- 6:57game that Pat Adams uh told him that he
- 6:59cussed at him. And the interesting part
- 7:01of that is, you know, Steam Pearl said,
- 7:02"I didn't cuss." And that's one man's
- 7:04word against somebody else. But, uh, we
- 7:06saw SEC inside here at practice
- 7:07yesterday. Steam
- 7:09>> here for like several games. Yeah.
- 7:11>> Uh, Steam Pearl was actually miked up
- 7:12tonight. So, like there will be hard
- 7:14evidence whether he he cussed at at Pat
- 7:16Adams, but
- 7:16>> we need the clip. I
- 7:17>> I said that to say like it's been a bit
- 7:19of a factor here in the past couple
- 7:21games. and and Steam Pearl said, "Look,
- 7:23we we've let our uh you know, we've let
- 7:25our emotions get the better of us in
- 7:27this game." I can think of now five
- 7:29instances over the last two games cuz
- 7:30you had two flagrant fouls against
- 7:32Alabama.
- 7:33>> Uh um Philip Yoic was called for a hook
- 7:35and hold in this game.
- 7:36>> There's been several hook and holds
- 7:38recently.
- 7:38>> I thought Yoic was going to I thought
- 7:40clearly he was going to get a technical
- 7:41foul. I don't know if you saw him run
- 7:42back up the floor and like touch his arm
- 7:45where he got hit right in Pat Adam's
- 7:46face. I'm like that he's going down. But
- 7:48he didn't get attacked. And then Kean
- 7:49Hall and Steam Pearl both get attack in
- 7:51this game. So, five, you know, free
- 7:53opportunities for the opponents. And off
- 7:56the top of my head, Patrick, I cannot
- 7:58rack those up pointwise, but against
- 8:01Alabama, they were both four-point
- 8:02possessions. I know. Um, and and lots of
- 8:05free opportunities for Vanderbilt in
- 8:06this game. And so really between and
- 8:08I'll kind of wrap it up here between
- 8:09that and between what you were just
- 8:11talking about with like the Keshan Hall
- 8:12thing. This is continually a case of a
- 8:15team that clearly has pieces clearly has
- 8:18things they can conce
- 8:21this season. Look no further than a
- 8:23four-game winning streak and beating
- 8:24Florida. But it's like
- 8:25>> the parts that are inconsistent when
- 8:27those start to swirl. Is this team
- 8:29bottom half of the SEC? They they I
- 8:31think they are. they they've shown that
- 8:33they they haven't they have the ability
- 8:34to play that low of a level and so
- 8:37really it's just with this new look
- 8:39group still we're here in approaching
- 8:41midFebruary trying to get all the pieces
- 8:43together trying to get guys to play
- 8:44consistently game by game
- 8:45>> and that's the thing is like not to
- 8:47compare everything to last year cuz
- 8:48that's not fair to this team but like
- 8:50last year if one or two players were off
- 8:53you had enough around them where it was
- 8:55fine like you could go through slumps or
- 8:58Tahad could go through a few games or
- 9:00whoever could go through a few games and
- 9:01you were ultimately fine because you had
- 9:03all the other pieces. And in this team,
- 9:05you're just not really built like that
- 9:07because you're not the best team's ever
- 9:09had. And so again, like for as much as
- 9:12we've seen when it's on, it's on and
- 9:14they can go win at Florida. It you also
- 9:17see the downside of it in these last few
- 9:18games, which makes the next month so
- 9:21interesting. And of course, it's kind of
- 9:23the ultimate, I guess, like flip it
- 9:25positive side hope for Auburn of like
- 9:27you get into the tournament, if you get
- 9:28the good side, maybe you could do
- 9:30something good. Sure. And and and
- 9:32segueing there with what you just said,
- 9:34Patrick, getting into the tournament.
- 9:36Yes. Um lots of lots of discussion
- 9:38tonight by people about, you know, what
- 9:40does this mean for Auburn's tournament
- 9:42outlook? Again, I I think I the biggest
- 9:44thing I will stress is that
- 9:45>> this is not the home Vanderbilt loss
- 9:48that I watched when I was a freshman at
- 9:50Auburn 10 years ago. This team will
- 9:51probably be they were 14th in the net
- 9:53heading into tonight. They'll probably
- 9:54be like 12th or 13th
- 9:57>> tomorrow. It's a really good team. This
- 9:58loss is not resume crushing by any
- 10:01means. If you're Auburn moving forward
- 10:03now, you're five and six in the league.
- 10:04You've helped yourself with some good
- 10:05quad one wins. You have a decent resume
- 10:07there. You have to continue to avoid the
- 10:09bad losses. Um so you look at games like
- 10:12Mississippi State on the road next week.
- 10:14That's what the game is, by the way.
- 10:15We're talking about this, not Oklahoma.
- 10:16They go to Mississippi State next
- 10:17Wednesday. Like
- 10:19>> Miss at home,
- 10:20>> Miss at home, LSU at home, who just beat
- 10:23this Vanderbilt team. It's it's it's
- 10:25tough to put yourself in a situation
- 10:26where you're just saying and I think
- 10:28that's the biggest thing is that you you
- 10:29don't need to put yourself in the
- 10:30situation where you're saying Auburn has
- 10:32no chance against better teams on their
- 10:34schedule cuz we know that's just not
- 10:35true. Like they go to Arkansas on
- 10:37Saturday. I know it's going to be really
- 10:38tough a revenge game, excuse me, a
- 10:40rematch game on the road against a team
- 10:42you already beat. But like
- 10:44>> Auburn went on the road and beat
- 10:45Florida.
- 10:46>> We're all like oh there's no there's no
- 10:48way they're going to go win in Bud
- 10:49Walton after what they did to them
- 10:50earlier XY and Z. I'm like I said there
- 10:52was no way they were winning after
- 10:54exactly and so really just you know from
- 10:56from here on out for the Auburn team now
- 10:58sitting at you know seven SEC games
- 11:00remaining I think getting to an even
- 11:02record or a winning record in the SEC
- 11:04would be really big but as of right now
- 11:07Patrick and we can only go game by game
- 11:09>> as of right now this is a tournament
- 11:11team's only going game by game I for
- 11:14>> Yeah yeah yeah
- 11:14>> but I mean it's just it's one of those
- 11:16things where it's like and that's it is
- 11:17like it's everything's so tight and
- 11:19really there is no top leader So you win
- 11:22a few games that really sways where you
- 11:23are in the standings and
- 11:25>> the next one's the most important one.
- 11:27>> True. Yeah, absolutely. I mean Auburn's
- 11:29going to try to give itself an
- 11:30opportunity against Arkansas. Another
- 11:32big challenge on the road. If they lose
- 11:33that game, uh you've you've all of a
- 11:35sudden flipped a four-ame winning streak
- 11:38into a four-ame losing streak. It
- 11:39currently sits at three games. Um couple
- 11:41stats for you. This is the first time
- 11:43they've lost back-to-back home games
- 11:44since the co year. if you would like to
- 11:46exclude that because Auburn did not have
- 11:48a capacity crowd and say when was the
- 11:50last time they won in front lost
- 11:51back-to-back home games in front of a in
- 11:53front of a building a full building
- 11:55again have to go all the way back to my
- 11:56freshman year uh they lost to Florida
- 11:58and they lost to Arkansas at home in
- 12:00back-to-back games and so uh yeah I mean
- 12:02Auburn obviously doesn't like any of
- 12:03those would like to get back on track
- 12:04and uh as Steven Pearl said this was a
- 12:07quote disappointing performance I think
- 12:08that's kind of the best way to uh to sum
- 12:10it up uh so Auburn falls to Vanderbilt
- 12:12tonight in uh in Neville Arena they'll
- 12:14be back in action at Budw Walton on
- 12:16Saturday for Patrick Bingham. I'm Nathan
- 12:18King. Thank you guys so much for joining
