Latest / Stugotz and Company / Set 2: Tennis Takes and We Can Observations (w/Jess Smetana)
Transcript
- 0:21Speaker 1: She is the host of the College Football Happy Hour
- 0:23Speaker 1: with our friend Lucy Rodin.
- 0:25Speaker 2: She has tennis takes.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Mikey A is going to be very upset on a
- 0:29Speaker 1: football Monday.
- 0:30Speaker 2: The first one we've had.
- 0:31Speaker 1: We did a ton of football. It's set number one.
- 0:34Speaker 1: But Jess has tennis takes. And I am here for
- 0:36Speaker 1: tennis takes. You went to the U.S.
- 0:38Speaker 3: Open? Yes.
- 0:39Speaker 4: I did.
- 0:39Speaker 3: It was my first time ever at the U.S. Open.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I went to the men's final on Sunday, and I
- 0:44Speaker 3: have been to other tennis matches before. I went to
- 0:48Speaker 3: the Miami Open every year when I lived in Miami,
- 0:50Speaker 3: but this was my first time at a major tournament,
- 0:52Speaker 3: and I do have takes to guts.
- 0:54Speaker 2: All right. I want them, Mikey. Mikey, she seemed to
- 0:57Speaker 2: pique your curiosity there. What happened? No, we were just talking.
- 1:01Speaker 4: Cause every time I look at Jess, she's in a
- 1:03Speaker 4: new location and she's trying to tell me that she.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Doesn't own 12 properties, but her first trip to the
- 1:08Speaker 3: U S open is the men's fine.
- 1:09Speaker 2: You're a millionaire. You just don't want to tell anyone.
- 1:13Speaker 2: That is true.
- 1:14Speaker 3: I was an invited guest. I am adjacent to people
- 1:17Speaker 3: who do own a lot of properties.
- 1:19Speaker 2: We'll put it that way.
- 1:20Speaker 3: I'm kind of like the Stu Gatz of schmoozing my
- 1:22Speaker 3: way into things a little bit. I just do it
- 1:24Speaker 3: more low key.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Yes.
- 1:25Speaker 2: Sue Gatz. Um, All right.
- 1:27Speaker 1: So unload the tennis stakes on us right now. Taylor,
- 1:29Speaker 1: you had something before she gives us her tennis stakes.
- 1:31Speaker 4: I was just going to say, I knew Jess was
- 1:33Speaker 4: there because she texted me that Jalen Brunson was there.
- 1:36Speaker 3: Yes.
- 1:37Speaker 4: And this match is week one during the NFL season.
- 1:40Speaker 4: I love Jalen Brunson. So I don't want this to
- 1:43Speaker 4: come off as criticism of him, but he portrays himself
- 1:46Speaker 4: as Mr. Philadelphia Eagles. You can't be at the U
- 1:49Speaker 4: S men's open final. When the Eagles are playing their
- 1:52Speaker 4: week one.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Game, you can be when there's an American male who's black,
- 1:55Speaker 1: who's trying to win an Arthur Ashe Stadium.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Yeah, you can. You can go there.
- 1:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:59Speaker 4: OK, you could go there, but don't pretend like you're
- 2:01Speaker 4: this big Eagles fan all of a sudden.
- 2:04Speaker 3: You know what, Taylor, though? Like I knew this match
- 2:07Speaker 3: was going to be really, really, really long. And it
- 2:09Speaker 3: was the first NFL Sunday and the Steelers were playing
- 2:12Speaker 3: the Falcons at one o'clock. And I didn't even have
- 2:15Speaker 3: to think about missing that game for a second because
- 2:18Speaker 3: I knew it was going to be disgusting.
- 2:20Speaker 2: And because right. And Cooper Rush was playing quarterback. Yes,
- 2:24Speaker 2: it was even.
- 2:25Speaker 3: More disgusting than I could have dreamed of. I looked
- 2:27Speaker 3: at the box score in like the third set and
- 2:30Speaker 3: I was so happy I wasn't at home watching that game.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Jalen Brunson is the Ben Stiller of Philadelphia Eagles fans.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Yes.
- 2:37Speaker 2: I'm this big fan until there's something else going on.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Interesting. Rick Brunson was also there. I was sitting about,
- 2:45Speaker 3: I don't know, five feet away from them the whole time.
- 2:47Speaker 2: Wow.
- 2:48Speaker 3: And I thought about Taylor the entire time. Josh Hart,
- 2:51Speaker 3: unfortunately not. I didn't see him. He wasn't there, but
- 2:53Speaker 3: there are, It was quite a star-studded event, so you
- 2:55Speaker 3: got a lot of famous people there.
- 2:57Speaker 2: No, it's a great event. It really is.
- 2:59Speaker 1: It's turned into one of the premier events in sports,
- 3:02Speaker 1: which is crazy. Jalen Brunson's there instead of watching the
- 3:05Speaker 1: NFL on Sunday because Ben Shelton's playing in the U.S.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Men's open final. So what are your takes here for tennis?
- 3:12Speaker 3: Well, okay, I'm actually going to add a third take
- 3:14Speaker 3: and just say right off the bat, nothing worse than
- 3:17Speaker 3: going to a match and knowing– within the first five minutes,
- 3:20Speaker 3: the guy you're rooting for just doesn't have it. It's
- 3:22Speaker 3: not going to be his day. Right. But then that
- 3:24Speaker 3: kind of flows into my second take, which is we
- 3:27Speaker 3: don't need to do five sets for men's tennis. Like we,
- 3:30Speaker 3: we could have wrapped that up after three, like I,
- 3:33Speaker 3: or two, I guess, like I knew Ben Shelton was
- 3:35Speaker 3: not going to come back. He, he did win his,
- 3:37Speaker 3: the fourth set, I believe, or the third set.
- 3:39Speaker 2: He was down two sets to nothing. He won the
- 3:41Speaker 2: third set lost in the fourth.
- 3:43Speaker 3: Yes, exactly. He just like, he didn't have it. And
- 3:46Speaker 3: it was, Really, really long, like a slow, slow sporting
- 3:52Speaker 3: event and very warm. The roof was open. It was humid.
- 3:56Speaker 3: I was dripping sweat down my back and there was
- 3:59Speaker 3: not a whole lot happening on the court.
- 4:01Speaker 2: You were yearning for Cooper Rush.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I wouldn't go that far.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Jess, I'm not a tennis fan, but it almost sounds
- 4:08Speaker 4: like the equivalent of like a gentleman's sweep what you watched.
- 4:12Speaker 3: Uh, yeah, I would say so. Like the, I think
- 4:14Speaker 3: the third set was, was close. It was competitive, but
- 4:17Speaker 3: I think we were maybe, although it wasn't until the
- 4:20Speaker 3: third set, I don't think until he broke serve, right? Stigatz,
- 4:23Speaker 3: like he, he just did not, he did not have
- 4:25Speaker 3: it in the, in the first two sets. And that's
- 4:26Speaker 3: why I'm like, I watch a ton. I, I'm a
- 4:29Speaker 3: late comer to tennis. I did not, I was not
- 4:31Speaker 3: a big tennis fan until I was in my twenties.
- 4:34Speaker 3: And so I don't have any sort of like nostalgia
- 4:37Speaker 3: or attachment to the way tennis does things. And that's
- 4:40Speaker 3: why I can say objectively, we do not need to
- 4:43Speaker 3: do five hour long matches at the majors. Like we like,
- 4:48Speaker 3: and it, and it also, you know, it makes every
- 4:51Speaker 3: point more exciting, more meaningful. If there's fewer of them overall,
- 4:57Speaker 3: I would say.
- 4:59Speaker 2: It was interesting to me. So you don't like tennis.
- 5:01Speaker 2: That's your take, essentially.
- 5:02Speaker 3: I do like tennis.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I do like tennis.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Tennis is not as fun as you guys win. The
- 5:09Speaker 3: guy you don't want to win is just beating the
- 5:12Speaker 3: other guy's ass for like three and a half hours.
- 5:14Speaker 2: Like, that sucks.
- 5:15Speaker 1: I understand.
- 5:16Speaker 2: It was 6-3, 7-6.
- 5:17Speaker 1: Shelton won the third set 7-5 and then lost 6-2
- 5:21Speaker 1: in the fourth set.
- 5:22Speaker 2: The winner had no idea that he had won. Did
- 5:24Speaker 2: you stay till the end? He didn't know. Do you
- 5:26Speaker 2: believe that?
- 5:27Speaker 3: Do you think that was BS? He was like, oh, me?
- 5:29Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't know that was championship point.
- 5:31Speaker 3: All the graphics around the stadium say championship point, but
- 5:34Speaker 3: I didn't realize it. Like, there's, I mean, there's no way.
- 5:37Speaker 1: We'll get to the weekend observations here with Jess in
- 5:40Speaker 1: a few minutes.
- 5:40Speaker 2: What do you have?
- 5:41Speaker 3: I have one more take.
- 5:42Speaker 2: I have my last take. Oh, I know.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Which is, you should be allowed to talk a little bit. Like,
- 5:48Speaker 3: it was very quiet. Also, the crowd at the men's
- 5:52Speaker 3: final was, yesterday stugatz yes was very rowdy they got
- 5:56Speaker 3: shushed a lot i don't know if that's normal but
- 5:58Speaker 3: it was like constant throughout the entire people were getting
- 6:01Speaker 3: a little like upset i think because shelton wasn't um
- 6:04Speaker 3: wasn't winning he was just making a lot of stupid
- 6:06Speaker 3: mistakes he kind of beat himself i i would say
- 6:08Speaker 3: throughout the that entire match but um i was there
- 6:11Speaker 3: with my friend who i haven't seen in a long
- 6:13Speaker 3: time my friend harry who is a espn college football
- 6:16Speaker 3: reporter And we didn't really get to catch up because
- 6:19Speaker 3: it was we didn't talk. We were just sitting there
- 6:21Speaker 3: like next to one another. You can't say a word. No,
- 6:25Speaker 3: you can't say anything. And if you say anything in
- 6:27Speaker 3: between serves, that umpire is going to look at you
- 6:32Speaker 3: and point. And I can't imagine a more shameful place
- 6:35Speaker 3: to be than on the other side of that point.
- 6:37Speaker 2: Oh, my God. I would be shaking.
- 6:40Speaker 3: In my boots if that were me. And it wasn't.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I was very respectful.
- 6:42Speaker 3: I know the etiquette. I know there's a whole thing
- 6:44Speaker 3: about influencers not knowing tennis etiquette over this tournament. I'm
- 6:47Speaker 3: not stupid, but I'm not going to do anything rude.
- 6:49Speaker 3: But maybe just like, can I do a little bit
- 6:52Speaker 3: of like a whisper, like a low whisper? Right. Like
- 6:54Speaker 3: you can talk more at a golf tournament.
- 6:56Speaker 2: You can, yes.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Than at tennis.
- 6:57Speaker 2: Yes.
- 6:58Speaker 3: Yes.
- 6:59Speaker 2: They take it very seriously. You have the umpire just
- 7:01Speaker 2: pointing directly at you if you're talking. I mean, terrifying.
- 7:04Speaker 3: She did it so many times and I can't imagine
- 7:07Speaker 3: breaking the rules like that. I don't know what these
- 7:09Speaker 3: influencers were doing because I can't imagine being that oblivious
- 7:13Speaker 3: to the rules that you're doing all this while the
- 7:15Speaker 3: rest of the entire area is completely silent. That must
- 7:19Speaker 3: have been crazy to witness. But yeah, it just maybe
- 7:22Speaker 3: just like a little murmur.
- 7:23Speaker 2: Will you go back?
- 7:23Speaker 3: A little murmur.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Will you go back?
- 7:25Speaker 3: Quiet murmur. Yeah, absolutely.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I love tennis.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Tennis is great.
- 7:27Speaker 2: It doesn't seem like it. It was an awesome event.
- 7:29Speaker 3: No, it was an awesome event. So you guys, if
- 7:31Speaker 3: Ben Shelton had won, probably would have been one of
- 7:33Speaker 3: the best days of my sports watching life.
- 7:37Speaker 2: Yes.
- 7:37Speaker 3: My sports watching life. Yes.
- 7:39Speaker 1: But while you were there, yes, you missed the Steelers. Yes,
- 7:42Speaker 1: you missed Cooper Rush. The Steelers won. They played that
- 7:44Speaker 1: game a thousand times. You also missed your other favorite team.
- 7:48Speaker 1: who has the greatest quarterback in the history of the NFL,
- 7:51Speaker 1: Caleb Williams and the Chicago Bears.
- 7:52Speaker 2: I mean, how about that? I know.
- 7:55Speaker 3: Like I said, I was checking the box scores. I
- 7:56Speaker 3: saw 59 points, and I could not believe it. But
- 8:00Speaker 3: then I saw that the Panthers scored 37, and that
- 8:03Speaker 3: was even worse.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:04Speaker 3: What the hell happened in that game?
- 8:06Speaker 2: I don't know. Caleb happened.
- 8:08Speaker 1: That score, that's never been a final score.
- 8:10Speaker 2: What do they call that? A score-a-gami.
- 8:12Speaker 1: A score-a-gami, right. They've never had that final score ever
- 8:16Speaker 1: in NFL history, so. What were your takes here from
- 8:19Speaker 1: college football? It's so sad because college football had such
- 8:22Speaker 1: a great Saturday, but then the NFL happens on Sunday
- 8:25Speaker 1: and we forget that we just saw Arch Manning's coming
- 8:28Speaker 1: out party and one of the great comebacks in college
- 8:31Speaker 1: football history with Texas coming back and beating Ohio State.
- 8:35Speaker 3: That was an incredible game and an incredibly silly and
- 8:40Speaker 3: stupid game. Stugatz, Ohio State, it kind of felt like
- 8:44Speaker 3: at halftime either Ohio state is going to blow this
- 8:47Speaker 3: Texas team out. And all of the off season chatter
- 8:49Speaker 3: about cam Coleman and Hollywood smothers and all, you know,
- 8:54Speaker 3: ringing miles, all the players that Texas added, like, okay,
- 8:57Speaker 3: that was all bluster. They still don't have a championship
- 9:00Speaker 3: contending team or Ryan day is about to do what
- 9:05Speaker 3: Ryan day does sometimes and clench up and blow a
- 9:09Speaker 3: 20 point lead. And that, Either way, it would have
- 9:11Speaker 3: been funny. All right, don't get me wrong. I don't
- 9:13Speaker 3: have a rooting interest in that game. I'm just trying
- 9:15Speaker 3: to watch a good football game. Ryan did kind of
- 9:18Speaker 3: clenched up in the fourth quarter and Texas came all
- 9:22Speaker 3: the way back. And I thought the scenes from the stadium,
- 9:25Speaker 3: that being a Texas home game were incredible. And I
- 9:29Speaker 3: love that that was not a neutral side game. I
- 9:31Speaker 3: love that that was played on campus. I think Ohio
- 9:33Speaker 3: state is probably going to be fine. I don't know
- 9:36Speaker 3: about you, but Jeremiah Smith in the first half of
- 9:38Speaker 3: that game just looked so awesome and incredible. And part
- 9:43Speaker 3: of the reason Texas was able to come back was
- 9:45Speaker 3: that they figured out what to do with them in
- 9:46Speaker 3: the second half. But both teams, I think, will be fine.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And they both have a chance to still go on
- 9:52Speaker 3: and win their conferences. But what an awesome game in
- 9:54Speaker 3: week two.
- 9:55Speaker 4: Jess, would Ohio State fans trade the 2024 National Championship
- 9:59Speaker 4: for Kirk Cignetti?
- 10:00Speaker 1: Taylor, can we.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Make that happen? Because then Notre Dame, I think, gets
- 10:07Speaker 3: that by default because they lost. And the play at
- 10:11Speaker 3: the end where Ohio State tried to throw a go-route
- 10:14Speaker 3: to Jeremiah Smith, It felt like the dagger at the
- 10:18Speaker 3: end of the 24 National Championship game when Christian Gray
- 10:21Speaker 3: got beat by Jeremiah Smith and then Ohio State. That
- 10:25Speaker 3: was kind of the end of the game, and Texas
- 10:27Speaker 3: was able to do a better job there than Notre
- 10:29Speaker 3: Dame was, but it did kind of give me pains
- 10:32Speaker 3: in my heart. So yeah, I think I'll speak for
- 10:34Speaker 3: Ohio State fans. We will give the National Championship in
- 10:40Speaker 3: 2024 to Notre Dame... and trade Signetti with Ryan Day.
- 10:45Speaker 1: See, when you add the wrinkle of handing it to
- 10:47Speaker 1: Notre Dame, I think they'd probably say.
- 10:49Speaker 2: No, you know?
- 10:50Speaker 3: Would they trade it for Marcus Freeman, potentially? I've seen that,
- 10:55Speaker 3: because Marcus Freeman, of course, went to Ohio State. People
- 10:57Speaker 3: think that that might be a place where if he
- 10:59Speaker 3: were to take another college job, that would be that job,
- 11:01Speaker 3: or else he probably would only leave to go to
- 11:03Speaker 3: the NFL. I think Marcus Freeman's a very good head coach,
- 11:07Speaker 3: but I've seen that be debated around the internet as well.
- 11:10Speaker 1: So we're giving up a national championship for a coach
- 11:12Speaker 1: who's never won a national championship.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Correct.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Yes.
- 11:15Speaker 3: And giving up the coach that won the national championship.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Right.
- 11:18Speaker 4: But it's a coach that should have won probably like
- 11:21Speaker 4: six national championships with some of these rosters.
- 11:24Speaker 3: You're right. That is sort of the argument, Taylor. But
- 11:27Speaker 3: I mean, look, I think some of the Ryan Day
- 11:29Speaker 3: criticism maybe is like a little bit overblown. But I
- 11:32Speaker 3: do think in this game in particular, you could look
- 11:34Speaker 3: at like individual things and be like, well, I don't
- 11:36Speaker 3: blame him for doing this. I don't blame him for
- 11:37Speaker 3: doing that. But then when you look at the totality
- 11:39Speaker 3: of it, they gave up a 20 point lead in
- 11:41Speaker 3: the fourth quarter. Maybe you're not someone who's like, yeah,
- 11:43Speaker 3: you let him score. You get the ball back. You
- 11:45Speaker 3: could kick a field goal or someone who's like, yeah,
- 11:47Speaker 3: call a different play there or whatever. But like the
- 11:49Speaker 3: point is Texas was not very good in the first half.
- 11:54Speaker 3: They made a ton of mistakes. They were just a
- 11:57Speaker 3: not competent football team. And you let them come all
- 11:59Speaker 3: the way back and win when you had a little
- 12:01Speaker 3: bit of a buffer. That shouldn't have happened.
- 12:02Speaker 1: Did this happen to you as you were watching that game?
- 12:05Speaker 1: I felt so bad for Arch Manning. I can't imagine
- 12:07Speaker 1: the amount of pressure on that kid. He was playing
- 12:09Speaker 1: so poorly. I was saying to myself, he doesn't have it.
- 12:11Speaker 1: He's not a Manning.
- 12:13Speaker 2: And then in the fourth quarter, I said he's the
- 12:14Speaker 2: greatest quarterback I've ever seen.
- 12:16Speaker 3: He's Tom Brady.
- 12:17Speaker 2: He's Peyton Manning.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't know how to evaluate Arch Manning, if
- 12:24Speaker 3: I'm being honest. He obviously is incredibly talented, but then
- 12:28Speaker 3: I saw him miss a couple wide-open players at some points.
- 12:31Speaker 3: I don't know, maybe you just chalk it up to
- 12:32Speaker 3: like he's young and he'll continue to figure it out.
- 12:35Speaker 3: And also the first half, like some of the mistakes
- 12:37Speaker 3: were not his fault, like drops, you know, senior wide
- 12:40Speaker 3: receivers making bad drops in the end zone, like stuff
- 12:43Speaker 3: that is not fumbles, like that's not on him. But yeah,
- 12:47Speaker 3: in the totality of his career, I think it still
- 12:49Speaker 3: is very interesting that he can look the way he
- 12:51Speaker 3: looked at the end of that game, but also look
- 12:53Speaker 3: the way he looked at the beginning of that game.
- 12:55Speaker 4: It feels like once the NFL draft comes, people are
- 12:57Speaker 4: still going to be able to talk themselves into Arch Manning, Jess.
- 13:00Speaker 4: Dante Moore, on the other hand, how do you make
- 13:03Speaker 4: sense of what's happening at Oregon where they lose to
- 13:07Speaker 4: Oklahoma State a week after Oklahoma State loses to Tulsa?
- 13:12Speaker 3: Wow. That Tulsa-Oklahoma State result is what's crazy about this
- 13:17Speaker 3: because if Oklahoma State beat Tulsa in week one and
- 13:19Speaker 3: Drew Mestemaker looked really good and the offense looked really
- 13:22Speaker 3: great and you could say, okay, well, North Texas was
- 13:24Speaker 3: one of the best offenses in college football in 2025.
- 13:27Speaker 3: Drew Mestemaker led FBS in passing in 2025. Now him
- 13:31Speaker 3: and his coaches are at Oklahoma State, and they are
- 13:34Speaker 3: still good. They still know how to make offense. Yeah,
- 13:36Speaker 3: that's going to be a tough game for Oregon to win.
- 13:39Speaker 3: But the Tulsa game happened, and it didn't seem like
- 13:41Speaker 3: Oklahoma State had any of that in their bag. And
- 13:44Speaker 3: last year, this Oklahoma State team, it was a different
- 13:46Speaker 3: Oklahoma State team because they have like 90 transfers on
- 13:49Speaker 3: this team, but they lost to Oregon 69-3. So for
- 13:52Speaker 3: this to be a one-year swing where now this team
- 13:55Speaker 3: can beat Oregon, and Dante Moore looks... Like a little
- 13:58Speaker 3: lost a little mistake ridden I don't really know what
- 14:01Speaker 3: to make of it other than new offensive coordinator and
- 14:04Speaker 3: I know Oregon fans were a little bit concerned about
- 14:06Speaker 3: the offensive line going into the season and some health
- 14:09Speaker 3: issues on the line so maybe there's an element of
- 14:11Speaker 3: like both of those things, but I also thought like
- 14:13Speaker 3: the defense didn't really look great either and Dan Lanning
- 14:15Speaker 3: said it best afterwards they got their asses kicked.
- 14:18Speaker 2: Dan Lanning, like he needs to win a championship pretty soon. Right.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Are people going to start coming for him? Correct.
- 14:23Speaker 3: I mean, I think people are already it's it's there.
- 14:26Speaker 3: They're calling him James Franklin of the West Coast. Like
- 14:29Speaker 3: it's there are people who were already on Lanning fraud
- 14:33Speaker 3: watch last year when they got blown out in the
- 14:36Speaker 3: playoff game. Yeah. And I think that that's kind of
- 14:39Speaker 3: the nature of college football fandom. You know, everyone is
- 14:42Speaker 3: a fraud till you win something. But then even if
- 14:46Speaker 3: you win that thing against a fraudulent team, you're still
- 14:48Speaker 3: a fraud. So everyone's a fraud all the time. It's
- 14:50Speaker 3: like the NBA. Everyone's a fraud.
- 14:52Speaker 1: Who are you pulling for this weekend? We'll get to
- 14:54Speaker 1: the observations here in a second. LSU, Mississippi.
- 14:57Speaker 2: Tough one.
- 14:58Speaker 3: Who am I pulling for?
- 14:59Speaker 2: I mean, it's hard to pull for any of them. Yes,
- 15:02Speaker 2: I guess.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Who do I think will win? I don't know. I
- 15:06Speaker 3: kind of. think LSU, but also, I don't know if
- 15:09Speaker 3: you stayed up and watched any of the LSU game
- 15:12Speaker 3: on Saturday. They didn't look very good against Louisiana Tech.
- 15:15Speaker 3: Sam Levitt threw some picks. It was kind of tough
- 15:17Speaker 3: sledding until they ended up winning by double-digit points at
- 15:21Speaker 3: the end. But also, Clemson almost lost, I guess you
- 15:26Speaker 3: could say, to Georgia Southern this past weekend, which does
- 15:29Speaker 3: kind of knock the LSU 51-10 win down a little
- 15:33Speaker 3: bit in my personal record book because I haven't seen
- 15:36Speaker 3: Clemson do anything I like Georgia Southern and Clemson. I
- 15:39Speaker 3: think Clemson's quarterback got hurt. So they put in the backup,
- 15:41Speaker 3: the freshmen again, it's just going to be a tough
- 15:43Speaker 3: season for them. But, um, I, yeah, I, I don't
- 15:46Speaker 3: know what to make of those results yet, but it'll
- 15:47Speaker 3: be fun to see them play against each other. I
- 15:49Speaker 3: don't really know if I, if I have a great, uh,
- 15:52Speaker 3: read on who's going to win the game, but I
- 15:54Speaker 3: think I'm pulling for Mississippi, but I, I may change
- 15:57Speaker 3: my mind about that depending on what their fans do
- 15:59Speaker 3: leading up to it.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Right. You have to see how everyone acts leading up
- 16:03Speaker 2: to the game.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 16:04Speaker 3: It might not be a good bandwagon to jump on
- 16:06Speaker 3: right now. I'm kind of scared.
- 16:19Speaker 2: All right, let's get to the weekend observations.
- 16:21Speaker 1: I want to apologize in advance to you, Jess, because
- 16:23Speaker 1: there's 19 pages of observations in front of me.
- 16:29Speaker 2: Look at the thickness of the set of papers that
- 16:33Speaker 2: are in my hand right now. I mean, look at it.
- 16:35Speaker 3: I love it.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Yes. Glad I said papers. Thickness. Anyway. Smetana! I think
- 16:48Speaker 2: I got it right.
- 16:50Speaker 3: Nailed it.
- 16:50Speaker 1: I haven't felt whole in quite some time. There's been
- 16:56Speaker 1: a void in my life.
- 16:57Speaker 2: An emptiness.
- 16:59Speaker 1: I've tried desperately to fill. I tried baseball. I tried
- 17:03Speaker 1: the World Cup. I tried tennis. But there's nothing like
- 17:07Speaker 1: a Sunday where you sit on your couch and don't
- 17:11Speaker 1: move a muscle for 10 plus hours. And Jess, all
- 17:15Speaker 1: of a sudden, my Sundays, my life, Has meaning again.
- 17:21Speaker 1: Because just like that, make no mistake about it, the
- 17:25Speaker 1: NFL is back.
- 17:29Speaker 3: So back.
- 17:29Speaker 2: So back. I love it.
- 17:31Speaker 1: CJ Stroud leads the NFL in taking sacks you just
- 17:36Speaker 1: can't take.
- 17:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:40Speaker 2: And committing turnovers you just can't commit.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I do.
- 17:44Speaker 1: Texans quarterback away. Josh Allen. Was 0-4 a lifetime in Houston? You,
- 17:51Speaker 1: of course, know what that means, right, Jess?
- 17:54Speaker 3: They were due.
- 17:55Speaker 2: He was due. Wow, you're on it.
- 17:58Speaker 3: Nailed it.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Sean McDermott would have found a way to lose that game.
- 18:04Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:04Speaker 2: He would have.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Where's he, by the way?
- 18:06Speaker 2: No idea.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Waiting.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Just waiting. Taylor, put that on the poll. Would Sean
- 18:12Speaker 1: McDermott have found a way to lose that game? When
- 18:16Speaker 1: Kamari Lasseter dropped the game-winning interception, I turned to Abby
- 18:21Speaker 1: and said, that's why he plays defense.
- 18:24Speaker 2: She said, what? And I said, never mind. He can't catch.
- 18:33Speaker 1: Bills, Texans, the rare AFC championship preview in week one.
- 18:39Speaker 2: How about that? What a game. Bills, Texans, game of
- 18:43Speaker 2: the year. It wasn't. For now. Justin Herbert. Blah, blah, blah.
- 18:51Speaker 2: Tired of that guy.
- 18:54Speaker 3: You and me both. Yeah.
- 18:56Speaker 1: The only thing Justin Herbert is good at or good for.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Let's try that one again. The only thing Justin Herbert
- 19:05Speaker 1: is good for is sending his receivers to the hospital.
- 19:08Speaker 2: Jess, do you know what the H in Justin Herbert
- 19:11Speaker 2: stands for?
- 19:12Speaker 3: Hospital ball.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Hospital. Wow. Look at you. Hospital ball.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh. Had a nice serving of humble pie for dinner.
- 19:27Speaker 1: The ancient Harbaugh.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Beep.
- 19:30Speaker 1: Stands for humble pie. Quicker on the beeps in there.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Whoever's controlling them. Maybe it's time to drop the offensive
- 19:40Speaker 1: genius label from Mike McDaniel's name.
- 19:44Speaker 4: Sure.
- 19:46Speaker 2: Ben Johnson.
- 19:47Speaker 1: Is who Mike McDaniel thinks he is. Ben Johnson said
- 19:56Speaker 1: he wanted to break the scoring record. He didn't say
- 20:00Speaker 1: he wanted to do it in the first half of
- 20:02Speaker 1: the first game.
- 20:04Speaker 2: Jesus. They are a juggernaut. I am telling you.
- 20:08Speaker 1: Chicago Bears. With a week one 50 burger. The rare
- 20:13Speaker 1: 50 burger with a side of holy shit.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Good. Jess's team is good. Both her teams are good.
- 20:24Speaker 2: I don't know about that.
- 20:28Speaker 1: If you told someone new to football that Bears Panthers
- 20:33Speaker 1: and Steelers Falcons were the same sport.
- 20:37Speaker 2: I don't think they'd believe you. Good one.
- 20:43Speaker 3: Yep.
- 20:44Speaker 2: If you've seen one Steelers game, you've seen them all. Ugly.
- 20:50Speaker 2: We need to get B. John Robinson out of Atlanta
- 20:54Speaker 2: before it's too late. They're going to murder that guy.
- 21:02Speaker 2: Stephon Diggs giveth. Stephon Diggs taketh. He does.
- 21:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:09Speaker 2: He gives you a little. He takes a little. Taylor,
- 21:15Speaker 2: you don't like Stephon Diggs, do you?
- 21:17Speaker 4: I don't mind him.
- 21:18Speaker 2: It's your observation. The Browns are the same without Miles Garrett.
- 21:31Speaker 3: The Rams are also without Miles Garrett. Yes.
- 21:34Speaker 2: The Browns have won that trade. Early on, yes.
- 21:37Speaker 3: So good.
- 21:38Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence, do it against somebody that isn't Cleveland. Lamar Jackson,
- 21:45Speaker 1: do it in the playoffs. Josh Allen, you too. If
- 21:49Speaker 1: Joe Burrow has a defense, everyone else is playing for second.
- 21:54Speaker 3: Facts. Yep.
- 21:56Speaker 2: Rams 0-1. What was that?
- 21:58Speaker 3: I like the Bengals this year. Yeah.
- 22:00Speaker 2: So do I. Super Bowl pick.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Rams 0-1. Jets and Cardinals 1-0. Football. Death. Taxes. And
- 22:13Speaker 2: Kyle Pitts being a disappointment.
- 22:16Speaker 3: Not in a good stat line.
- 22:18Speaker 2: Zero catches.
- 22:23Speaker 1: Few things are more exciting than watching Baker Mayfield down
- 22:29Speaker 1: 13 in the fourth quarter.
- 22:30Speaker 2: He might not win. He might lose. It doesn't really matter.
- 22:33Speaker 1: Just him scrambling back to get his team back into
- 22:36Speaker 1: a position where they can win that game is exciting
- 22:39Speaker 1: to watch.
- 22:39Speaker 3: It is. I agree.
- 22:41Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 22:42Speaker 1: When the Jets don't ruin my Sunday, I don't know
- 22:45Speaker 1: what to do with myself. It felt weird. I'm oddly
- 22:49Speaker 1: relaxed today. You know what the R in Robert Sala
- 22:53Speaker 1: stands for?
- 22:56Speaker 3: No.
- 22:57Speaker 2: Not revenge.
- 22:57Speaker 3: Fair. Fair. Should have thought of that.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Here's the rare something to ponder that we can ponder
- 23:05Speaker 1: right now. Is Cam Ward good?
- 23:09Speaker 3: He kind of just has no vibes.
- 23:11Speaker 2: I don't know what he is.
- 23:13Speaker 3: I don't know. I don't know. I don't watch that.
- 23:17Speaker 3: I don't know what that is. I saw a weird
- 23:18Speaker 3: highlight from that game, though. Not good.
- 23:20Speaker 2: What happened?
- 23:22Speaker 3: He, like, bobbled the football and then got sacked. I
- 23:26Speaker 3: think it was on purpose, though. I couldn't tell.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Only 18 pages to go. He tossed it up to himself.
- 23:31Speaker 3: Yeah. Mikey, yeah, you saw that, right?
- 23:33Speaker 2: It was like a play action.
- 23:34Speaker 3: That's all I saw from this game. All right.
- 23:38Speaker 2: Miles Garrett out four weeks. One might say Garrett has
- 23:44Speaker 2: too many miles on that knee. You like that? Not really. Seahawks, Patriots,
- 23:54Speaker 2: feels like a game. That was played last season. It does.
- 24:00Speaker 2: It was Wednesday.
- 24:01Speaker 1: 13-10.
- 24:02Speaker 3: Yep.
- 24:03Speaker 2: If anyone sees baseball, tell them I said hello.
- 24:10Speaker 3: So true.
- 24:11Speaker 2: The rare witching hour. That lasted two. An extra session.
- 24:16Speaker 2: Not bad. It was that overtime game with the Saints, right?
- 24:19Speaker 3: Almost as long as the U.S. Open.
- 24:21Speaker 2: Final. But I could talk.
- 24:24Speaker 1: Every year I think to myself, this is the year
- 24:29Speaker 1: Derrick Henry slows down.
- 24:32Speaker 2: And every year, Derrick Henry proves me wrong. It's incredible. Ravens. Bears.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Collision course. Detroit Lions. Survive and advance.
- 24:45Speaker 2: Cowboys. Giants.
- 24:48Speaker 1: No love lost. Cam Scadaboo. Runs like there's no tomorrow.
- 24:54Speaker 2: He does. Put it on the poll, Taylor.
- 24:57Speaker 1: You can make an argument that Peanut Tillman should be
- 25:00Speaker 1: in the Hall of Fame just for the peanut punch.
- 25:04Speaker 2: I said peanut. Yes.
- 25:07Speaker 3: Peanut. Yes.
- 25:08Speaker 1: The Packers haven't collapsed like that since the last time
- 25:13Speaker 1: they played a game. Every Vikings game ends with them
- 25:21Speaker 1: having to go to plan B at quarterback.
- 25:24Speaker 2: True. Carson Wentz. Amazing.
- 25:27Speaker 1: You could tell me anything happened in baseball yesterday, and
- 25:30Speaker 1: I'd believe you. Also, I wouldn't care. Michigan, the rare
- 25:37Speaker 1: bounce back from winning the week before.
- 25:41Speaker 3: True.
- 25:41Speaker 2: Yes, very true.
- 25:43Speaker 1: The O in Oklahoma stands for how many points I
- 25:48Speaker 1: am confident in them scoring.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Oklahoma's offense stinks. OU. More like PU. Taylor.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Valid. That's a good one.
- 26:02Speaker 2: Enough with John Mateer.
- 26:05Speaker 3: At least he gained a lot of muscle weight.
- 26:08Speaker 2: I have seven pages to go. Bryce Underwood. Could scoot.
- 26:13Speaker 1: Imagine being in Oklahoma in an Oklahoma frat and having
- 26:18Speaker 1: an Oklahoma beers number 81 jersey.
- 26:21Speaker 2: What a sad life. Seriously.
- 26:24Speaker 1: Re-evaluate everything you're doing. If it walks like a duck
- 26:30Speaker 1: and talks like a duck, it's overrated.
- 26:33Speaker 3: It's a fraud.
- 26:33Speaker 2: Oh, darn it. That was close. Wait, we can try again.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Do you know what the O in Oregon stands for?
- 26:40Speaker 3: Overrated.
- 26:41Speaker 2: Boom. You're back.
- 26:43Speaker 3: I'm back.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Dan Lanning is West Coast. James Franklin. Where have I
- 26:51Speaker 2: heard that before?
- 26:52Speaker 1: To be fair to James Franklin, at least he's won
- 26:56Speaker 1: the little. What happened there?
- 26:58Speaker 2: The little ones.
- 26:59Speaker 1: It's a lot on a Monday. Dan Lanning is more
- 27:06Speaker 1: like a lame James Franklin. Lames Franklin. Oklahoma State losing
- 27:14Speaker 1: to Tulsa last week and beating Oregon this week.
- 27:18Speaker 2: You know what that was, Jess?
- 27:20Speaker 3: Tale of two weeks.
- 27:21Speaker 2: It should have been a tale of two weeks. Taylor
- 27:23Speaker 2: says it's any given Saturday.
- 27:25Speaker 3: Ah, okay. That's good, too.
- 27:26Speaker 1: Yes. Dante Moore came back to college just to prove
- 27:30Speaker 1: to everyone how big of a fraud he is.
- 27:34Speaker 2: I didn't want to say that. Taylor.
- 27:40Speaker 1: Dante Moore, the rare quarterback who probably regrets avoiding the Jets.
- 27:50Speaker 3: Would have been 1-0.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I never thought I'd live to see the day that
- 27:53Speaker 1: ESPN bumped a college football game for a tennis match.
- 27:59Speaker 3: It was hard to find it afterwards, too.
- 28:01Speaker 2: It was a big match.
- 28:02Speaker 3: It's like an ESPN News. It was a big match.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Oregon. Oklahoma State. Sorry, Jess.
- 28:08Speaker 1: The rare game that started on ESPN, got bumped to ESPN, too,
- 28:13Speaker 1: and finished on ESPN News.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Who even has that? I don't know. I do, but still.
- 28:19Speaker 2: There's two more pages. I'll rip through them, Jess.
- 28:22Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Something to ponder.
- 28:24Speaker 1: When a football game gets put on ESPN News, where
- 28:30Speaker 1: do they put the end of the cornhole match?
- 28:35Speaker 2: Where does it go, actually? I was thinking about this.
- 28:38Speaker 2: ESPN Unlimited.
- 28:39Speaker 1: Oh, okay. I was going to say no need to
- 28:44Speaker 1: discuss now, but we discussed it. I want to discuss it.
- 28:46Speaker 1: What happens to it?
- 28:47Speaker 2: Where does it go? You could change the players. You
- 28:51Speaker 2: could change the coaches. Change the venue. Iowa. Iowa State
- 28:57Speaker 2: will always find a way to be ugly football.
- 29:02Speaker 3: El Asico.
- 29:02Speaker 2: Yep. Ohio State. Do it in the fourth quarter.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I've never been more sure a kicker was missing a
- 29:10Speaker 1: 46-yard field goal than I was. When Ohio State's kicker
- 29:15Speaker 1: walked up to kick it, you could feel it.
- 29:18Speaker 2: Yes.
- 29:20Speaker 1: In honor of Michigan getting an extra second last week,
- 29:24Speaker 1: Ohio State decided to play only 30 minutes this week.
- 29:34Speaker 1: Ryan Day saw Arthur Smith call plays in the NFL
- 29:38Speaker 1: and said, you know what?
- 29:42Speaker 2: We need that in Columbus.
- 29:44Speaker 3: I don't think Smith was that bad at Pittsburgh.
- 29:53Speaker 2: Ryan Day. Yeah, not good. Well, the same game. Doesn't
- 29:56Speaker 2: matter who it is. Doesn't matter who the coach is.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Doesn't matter who's doing what.
- 29:59Speaker 3: They have a quarterback. But go on.
- 30:01Speaker 2: Ryan Day.
- 30:03Speaker 1: Losing another game where the other team was more physical
- 30:06Speaker 1: than his team. Somewhere, Lou Holtz is smiling. We were
- 30:14Speaker 1: a quarter away from Steve Sarkeesian complaining that Texas even
- 30:20Speaker 1: plays in this game.
- 30:22Speaker 2: Sark. You're so right about that.
- 30:25Speaker 3: And then he complained about it anyways afterwards. Yep.
- 30:29Speaker 2: Jess.
- 30:29Speaker 3: Jess.
- 30:30Speaker 2: You know what Arch Manning did over the weekend?
- 30:34Speaker 4: No.
- 30:34Speaker 2: He announced himself. You know what the A in Arch
- 30:38Speaker 2: stands for?
- 30:40Speaker 3: Announced himself.
- 30:41Speaker 2: You know what the M in Manning stands for?
- 30:44Speaker 3: Manning.
- 30:45Speaker 2: Multiple MVPs. Manning. Andy Roddick. The American tennis throne is
- 30:57Speaker 2: still yours. And probably... Always will be.
- 31:01Speaker 1: ESPN. Saying they don't want to mix politics and sports.
- 31:06Speaker 1: And then having Senator Ted Cruz on college game day.
- 31:10Speaker 2: ESPN. I love you. But the Stugatz. Is strong in you.
- 31:17Speaker 2: Greg Cody. 54 years. At the Miami Herald. Hell of
- 31:24Speaker 2: a run. Speaking of hell. Arp Riles. Jess.
- 31:29Speaker 1: Those are the weekend observations in book form.
