- 0:12Hello, friends. I'm Sean.
- 0:15And you're Susan. And if you are actually Susan,
- 0:19I'm sorry, that may have freaked you out, but what I mean is you
- 0:22are you. You are in.
- 0:24You are Tim. You are Helen.
- 0:26You are Susan. Indeed, you are, my friend.
- 0:30And you have clicked on play. And you and I are going to read
- 0:34another chapter of God's Word today.
- 0:36Hello. I hope you are going well.
- 0:39Oh, me. Thanks for asking.
- 0:41I'm. I'm going swimmingly.
- 0:42And I am enjoying Isaiah. Do you know I have dreaded
- 0:46Isaiah in the past? And I thought, oh, dear, it's
- 0:48going to be hard work slogging away through that book.
- 0:51And we get there in the podcast. But I've really enjoyed it and
- 0:55well, I am really enjoying it. And I hope you are too.
- 0:58And today it continues to be fascinating, because today, yes,
- 1:03God's people are still stuck in exile in Babylon.
- 1:07They didn't listen to God. And the consequence of that was
- 1:11they lost their promised land and they were dragged off into
- 1:14exile, far away with the Babylonians.
- 1:18And God doesn't want them to think that he has forsaken them
- 1:21and left them alone. And today he tells his people,
- 1:24yeah, you lot have been stubborn, but I want you to
- 1:28trust in me now because I will save you.
- 1:32And at the end of this, there, the last two verses of this is
- 1:36lovely. It is a little hymn that calls
- 1:40God's people to flee from the Babylonian ways and rejoice,
- 1:45because God will indeed redeem them.
- 1:49So without any further ado, let us let us God's stubborn people,
- 1:55Read this chapter together. Isaiah, chapter 48.
- 2:09Listen to me, O family of Jacob, you who are called by the name
- 2:14of Israel and born into the family of Judah.
- 2:19Listen, you who take oaths in the name of the Lord and call on
- 2:24the God of Israel, you don't keep your promises, even though
- 2:29you call yourself the Holy city and talk about depending on the
- 2:33God of Israel whose name is the Lord of Heaven's armies.
- 2:39Long ago I told you what was going to happen.
- 2:43Then suddenly I took action and all my predictions came true.
- 2:48For I know how stubborn and obstinate you are.
- 2:52Your necks are as unbending as iron, Your heads are as hard as
- 2:57bronze. That is why I told you what
- 3:00would happen. I told you beforehand what I was
- 3:04going to do. Then you could never say my
- 3:07idols did it. My wooden image and metal God
- 3:10commanded it to happen. You have heard my predictions
- 3:14and seen them fulfilled, but you refuse to admit it.
- 3:18Now I will tell you new things, secrets you have not yet heard.
- 3:23They are brand new, not things from the past, so you cannot say
- 3:27we knew that all the time. Yes, I will tell you of things
- 3:32that are entirely new, things you never heard of before, for I
- 3:37know so well what traitors you are.
- 3:40You have been rebels from birth. Yet for my own sake and for the
- 3:45honor of my name, I will hold back my anger and not wipe you
- 3:51out. I have refined you, but not as
- 3:55silver is refined. Rather, I have refined you in
- 3:58the furnace of suffering. I will rescue you.
- 4:02For my sake, yes, for my own sake.
- 4:06I will not let my reputation be tarnished, and I will not share
- 4:10my glory with idols. Listen to me, O family of Jacob
- 4:16Israel, my chosen one. I alone am God the 1st and the
- 4:23last. It was my hand that laid the
- 4:26foundations of the earth, my right hand that spread out the
- 4:31heavens above. When I call out the stars, they
- 4:36all appear in order. Have any of your idols ever told
- 4:40you this? Come all of you, and listen.
- 4:44The Lord has chosen Cyrus as his ally.
- 4:48He will use him to put an end to the Empire of Babylon and to
- 4:53destroy the Babylonian armies. I have said it.
- 4:58I am calling Cyrus. I will send him on this errand
- 5:03and will help him succeed. Come closer and listen to this
- 5:08from the beginning. I've told you plainly what would
- 5:11happen. And now the sovereign Lord and
- 5:15his spirit have sent me with this message.
- 5:19This is what the Lord says. You're a demon, the holy One of
- 5:22Israel. I am the Lord your God, who
- 5:27teaches you what is good for you and leads you along the paths
- 5:31you should follow. Oh, that you had listened to my
- 5:34commands. Then you would have peace
- 5:38flowing like a gentle river and righteousness rolling over you
- 5:44like waves in the sea. Your descendants would have been
- 5:48like sands along the seashore, too many to count.
- 5:52There would have been no need for your destruction or for
- 5:55cutting off your family name. Yet even now, be free from
- 6:00captivity. Leave Babylon and the
- 6:04Babylonians sing out this message.
- 6:08Shout it to the ends of the earth.
- 6:10The Lord has redeemed his servants, the people of Israel.
- 6:15They were not thirsty when he led them through the desert.
- 6:18He divided the rock and water gushed out for them to drink.
- 6:24But there is no peace for the wicked, says the Lord.
- 6:38You are a big God, our Father, with big plans and a big heart.
- 6:44Thank you for your sovereignty. We acknowledge you as our God.
- 6:50We praise you and we worship you.
- 6:55Today, no matter what it is that we face, we face it knowing that
- 7:00we are servants and children of the Most High.
- 7:04May this be our founding identity.
- 7:07May this be what we see when we look in the mirror, because we
- 7:12are yours and you are our God, and that is the greatest news
- 7:16ever. And you have not left us to our
- 7:19own devices to be lost and stubbornly disobey you.
- 7:23That you have drawn us back by giving us Jesus and through his
- 7:27death saving us, so that we, blessed by your forgiveness and
- 7:34your grace, can come back to you and so come back to you.
- 7:38We do. I love you, and it's in Jesus
- 7:42name that we pray this. Amen.
