- 1:30You wrapped your arms around me and heaven broke through from
- 1:35the moment she found me. I found my freedom in you.
- 1:41Welcome to the Four Freedom Podcast.
- 1:43This podcast exists to bring the freedom of the gospel for
- 1:47everyday Christians. With everyday issues.
- 1:51Now here are your hosts, James Sabre and Brett Moore.
- 1:58All right, well, we're here today with Steve and Marcus from
- 2:01Luther Rice. And if you don't know Luther
- 2:03Rice, this is the combination of Martin Luther and John R Rice.
- 2:07They came together and formulated a independent
- 2:09fundamental Baptist college. It fits our series of the
- 2:12fundamentals, the foundation of fundamentals.
- 2:14And so they're just going to talk, sort of share the history
- 2:17of where we're at. If you listen to RFP, Marcus was
- 2:19just on there and got to share a little bit about what's going
- 2:22on. But we've got the president
- 2:23here, Steve, the man in charge, the myth, the legend, and we
- 2:27want to just sort of hear the heart of what's going on at
- 2:29Luther Rice and what you guys have going on.
- 2:33I appreciate that James and Brett, it's, it's good to be
- 2:35here and good to be here with Marcus as well.
- 2:38I. Appreciate the independent
- 2:40fundamental. Introduction I've I've been here
- 2:43over 13 years. That's the first time I've ever
- 2:44heard us explain like that. But now we've been around since
- 2:471962. Doctor Robert Witty started the
- 2:50school in Jacksonville, FL. He decided that not only were we
- 2:54going to train people for ministry, but we're going to
- 2:56train people in the ministry and a lot of the pastors.
- 2:59Could not pack up their families and move their family to a
- 3:01seminary. So he decided he was going to do
- 3:03it by a distance education, and he started out by doing a
- 3:06correspondence. Well, here we are.
- 3:08Now with the Internet, we think that thing is going to take off
- 3:10here sometime soon and we use that for online education now.
- 3:14So here we're still doing distance education primarily.
- 3:17I think we have what about 1000 students right now, Doc, I would
- 3:20say almost 99% of those students do their work 100% online.
- 3:24A couple of the doctoral students come in for the one
- 3:27week modules, but. It's just.
- 3:29Our average age student right now is anywhere.
- 3:30Between 30 and 50 years old. It's a It's a man or a woman
- 3:34that's in ministry, has a job, has a.
- 3:36Family and it's crazy enough to try to figure in you know an
- 3:39education so that's what we're really good at and our
- 3:42professors are dedicated to that but the most important thing is
- 3:45the fact that we still believe that God's.
- 3:47Word is infallible, inspired, inerrant and authoritative for
- 3:51our lives. So.
- 3:53That's what we teach at Luther Rice.
- 3:54It undergirds everything we do, and we're not ashamed of that.
- 3:57You. Guys aren't a Southern Baptist
- 4:00seminary, but you guys sort of, I think if I remember correctly,
- 4:03you spawned out of the Conservative resurgence.
- 4:06Tell us a little bit about that. Yeah.
- 4:08So we we don't get any of the cooperative.
- 4:10Funds from from the They let us play in the reindeer games here.
- 4:12Right. So we can, we can get a booth
- 4:14here and and hang out and recruit.
- 4:16But no, we've always been independent since 1962.
- 4:21But yeah, we spawned out of really where I think we gained.
- 4:24Our traction was a conservative resurgence, so Doctor Charles
- 4:26Stanley's a graduate of ours. Jerry.
- 4:28Vines is a graduate of ours. Steven Oldford is a graduate of
- 4:31ours. So back in the day when that
- 4:33was. Hot and heavy.
- 4:35Our guys were on the. Pulpit or being?
- 4:37You know, nominated as president, president to rock.
- 4:41You know to to. Move this convention into a
- 4:45conservative perspective. So we still stand on that today.
- 4:49Now before we started, Marcus, you said you had the perfect
- 4:52face for podcasting, so I wanted to ask you a question.
- 4:56What kind of programs does Luther Rice offer for anyone
- 4:59that might be interested in attending?
- 5:02Well, thank you, Brett. Obviously, I think everybody
- 5:05should do a Doctor of Ministry because I'm the director of that
- 5:08program, but not everybody's there and I understand that
- 5:12thanks to our President, we have all kind of new offerings now.
- 5:16For example, say you have no education at all, no formal
- 5:20education on your pastor of a church.
- 5:22You don't have the time or the money or the ability to do a
- 5:25full degree. Well, you can do a certificate
- 5:28now. A certificate is 3 courses.
- 5:30For example, if you took a certificate in biblical
- 5:33education, that would be the three courses would be like Old
- 5:37Testament survey, New Testament survey, and Introduction to
- 5:40Hermeneutics. I mean, what 3 better classes
- 5:43could a pastor ask for than that?
- 5:45And then once they complete that certificate, they could actually
- 5:48come to graduation in Conyers, GA and they could March in cap
- 5:53and gown and, and graduate with that certificate.
- 5:55That could be done there. Or that pastor or that Christian
- 5:59may say, I want to do another certificate or they may say I
- 6:02want to roll this certificate into a full degree and
- 6:05everything they've done would go right into a bachelor's degree
- 6:08and they could work towards that 120 hour bachelor's degree.
- 6:12So I love the front end offering of certificates for pastors, for
- 6:17ministry or for anybody that's in ministry.
- 6:20And then we also have another new program that Doctor
- 6:23Steinhilber has has spearheaded. We have an associate's degrees
- 6:27in general studies. We also have, in addition to our
- 6:31long Hill, which is what I have, a Bachelor of Arts in religion.
- 6:35We have now a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from a biblical,
- 6:39conservative Christian perspective.
- 6:42So not everybody in your church is called to full time ministry.
- 6:47And so that's why we've added some of these degrees.
- 6:49And obviously we have all the master's degrees, Master of
- 6:52divinity, Master of Arts and the Demon, which is my program.
- 6:57And we have two PHDSPHD in organizational leadership which
- 7:00could be used. Maybe you work for Coke or
- 7:04Delta, you know, you could use that in a secular setting.
- 7:07We also have a PhD in Christian scripture and anyone that
- 7:11graduates with that degree would be qualified to teach not only
- 7:15Old Testament, but also teach New Testament.
- 7:17So it's a, it's a wonderful all-encompassing PhD.
- 7:22And in addition to that, again, and I hate to, I don't want my
- 7:25president to think I'm just gloating on him because he's
- 7:26standing right here and because his name's on my paycheck.
- 7:29But another one of part of the reason is that, but another one
- 7:33of his vision was not only are we to equip for the ministry,
- 7:38but also for the marketplace. How many people in your churches
- 7:42are going to be full time ministers?
- 7:44Not many probably, but everybody's going to be in the
- 7:47marketplace. So we've now have the funds in
- 7:51place to begin the Nall School of Business.
- 7:54And I'm sure Doctor Steinhilbert has much more information about
- 7:57that than I know. So, but those are just some of
- 7:59the the degree programs that we offer.
- 8:01Now one thing you when you say 100% online, you absolutely mean
- 8:06that me, me being in Mississippi, I could take it and
- 8:09not have to go to Georgia at all.
- 8:10It's just 100% online the whole program.
- 8:14Yeah, and you don't have to be online at any particular time.
- 8:17You just have to get your weekly.
- 8:18Assignments done so the. The academic week.
- 8:20Starts at Monday. At 12:00 AM and then goes
- 8:22through 1159. On Sunday.
- 8:24And so our, our. Classes are what's called
- 8:26asynchronous, right? So.
- 8:28You can access them at any time. We have the video lectures.
- 8:31Already recorded for you so you can.
- 8:33Watch them, rewatch them, rewatch them, fall asleep, write
- 8:36down what time you're at, come back the.
- 8:38Next morning, wake up and watch it again.
- 8:39So it just offers the flexibility.
- 8:42You know, I was in school and. Yeah, I I just didn't have the
- 8:45time to to go to the classroom and and Luther Ice helped me do
- 8:49that. So we.
- 8:51We had a cigar this past week with a guy named Daniel Wynn,
- 8:54and Daniel and his wife that went to a unaccredited Bible
- 8:57college, had received credits, and now they sort of got burned
- 9:02out. But now she has a reintervigored
- 9:04spirit to begin to go back to school, to get a teaching
- 9:09education, teaching degree. And she enrolled in several
- 9:12colleges and they wouldn't accept any of their college
- 9:16credits that she took. They couldn't provide syllabuses
- 9:19for the classes that she took. The college wouldn't do that.
- 9:23So no college. So she had to start back to
- 9:25square 1. So in our world, a lot of that
- 9:28we. I have an unaccredited Bible
- 9:30college degree. Brett has two unaccredited Bible
- 9:32college degrees from two different colleges.
- 9:35He was able to go through a college that helped out a little
- 9:37bit of that. What would you say to someone
- 9:38that has that college experience, but maybe it's from
- 9:41an unaccredited college. I know you guys are full tracks
- 9:45and sacks accreditation. Yeah.
- 9:48And So what would you tell to someone that is warning that
- 9:51they've spent all the money in the of the years that someone
- 9:55told them to go there? How would you advise someone in
- 9:57that area? Yeah, first.
- 9:59First of all, I would say, listen, the education that you
- 10:01got from that unaccredited school, just because it's
- 10:04unaccredited does not mean it's not worth anything.
- 10:07Normally at the. Under at the, you know, the
- 10:10Bible college level or the Christian School, a lot of those
- 10:13schools just don't have the financial resources to get that
- 10:16accreditation that has. No bearing on the quality of the
- 10:19education you got so first of. All I just tell anybody even
- 10:21like yourselves, like don't. Don't don't worry about that,
- 10:25right? Like it's it's more about what
- 10:26you. Learn in the education versus
- 10:28versus the. The accreditation that you have
- 10:31now if you. Wanted to further your education
- 10:33at a place like Luther Rice? We do.
- 10:35Accept non accredited. Schools, but we do have to
- 10:39evaluate the courses. And the syllabi and so forth.
- 10:42But so my recommendation would be just go to a school like a
- 10:46Luther Rice. And just ask them and say hey,
- 10:48listen this. Is this something that you would
- 10:49evaluate and most? Schools will.
- 10:52Try to. Do that.
- 10:53We try to. Give the the.
- 10:54Student the benefit of the doubt, because we know the arena
- 10:58we're in and and we know that the education that you got was
- 11:01worth it. It's just the the school didn't
- 11:03have the resources. So selfishly, I'm going to say,
- 11:06hey, give Luther Rice a try. Let our Office of Admissions
- 11:10evaluate those transcripts and we'll see if we can get you in.
- 11:13I'm not going to call school names, but I'll tell you, I've
- 11:17seen credits be given for some schools that aren't, you know,
- 11:22on the level that we're on. So I know it can it can happen.
- 11:26Now, y'all, you mentioned something a while ago about
- 11:28business going into that arena. Can you tell us more about that?
- 11:32Yeah. So I'm going to count by trade.
- 11:33I'm a bean counter, right? So I came into higher Ed about.
- 11:3713 years ago, I discerned to call the.
- 11:39Ministry and just enrolled as a student at Luther Rice.
- 11:43And then here. I am, 13 years later as
- 11:45presidents, bonkers. But again I I I worked in the.
- 11:48Marketplace for about 15 years and I was a winsome ambassador
- 11:52for Christ in the business world.
- 11:54And so when we had the opportunity, we had a major
- 11:56donor give us a a $300,000 gift this year to start a School of
- 12:01Business. So Lord willing, we get this, we
- 12:04get the accreditors approval. Starting this spring, we'll have
- 12:07a Bachelor of Arts and Business Administration, and our goal is
- 12:11just to equip men and women who've called to be businessmen
- 12:14and women, but but also want to be Winston ambassadors for
- 12:17Christ in the. Marketplace so we're.
- 12:19Going to teach it from a biblical worldview, very heavy
- 12:22on business, right? We want this to be a business
- 12:24degree that you can utilize and succeed.
- 12:26In that market. But we also want to equip you to
- 12:29be able to do it from a, you know, an ethical worldview, you
- 12:32know, So what we're going to, we're going to business.
- 12:33Ethics degree class. An evangelism class, and you
- 12:39name it, it'll be from a biblical worldview.
- 12:41So is this going to be like business of is there will there
- 12:45be specific business degrees would just be a general business
- 12:48degree? Yeah, it'd be a, it'll be a
- 12:50general Bachelor of Arts and Business Administration degree,
- 12:53but you're going to have economics, accounting,
- 12:56marketing. Finance.
- 13:00Statistics, you name it, it's it's it's going to be your
- 13:02general degree. Little Birdie told me that you
- 13:05guys were thinking of starting an associate's degree for bikers
- 13:09that were looking to be a biker education.
- 13:11Just trying to figure out where that was at.
- 13:13Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, Doctor Merritt is a
- 13:19resident biker. You know, I, I had to give up my
- 13:22bike about about six years ago. I used to ride quite a bit, but
- 13:25we leave the bike in the dock now, you know?
- 13:28When you have a beard like that, you got no choice but to be a
- 13:31biker. Absolutely.
- 13:32And you know, he shared something on Facebook.
- 13:35I think he shared more about the bike exhibit around here than he
- 13:38even did Luther Rice's exhibit. So I'm trying to figure out
- 13:41where that was going to be incorporated.
- 13:43The guy's never in the office anymore.
- 13:45It's like, hey man, it's Doc, I got to go to Israel, I've got to
- 13:48go to Greece, I got to go to Daytona for bike week.
- 13:51He's going to Sturgis. So yeah, he's only here for our
- 13:55modules anymore. That's good.
- 13:57That's why it's all online, because doctors got to be going
- 14:02all the time in my. Defense, I am not a biker, I'm a
- 14:05motorcyclist, and there's a big difference.
- 14:08That's right. Well, my dad, he drives
- 14:09motorcycles as well, so I've been in it my whole life.
- 14:12So you said you enrolled 13 years ago at Luther Rice.
- 14:15Was Doctor Merritt one of your teachers or how how was the?
- 14:20Now he, he was still with the the mission board at that time
- 14:22actually like real quick, funny story is we had, we were hiring
- 14:26for his position. So I called him up knowing he
- 14:28knew everybody in the state of Georgia.
- 14:29I said, man, I got an open position.
- 14:31You know everybody, you know anybody that'd be interested in
- 14:33it. And he goes, yeah, I know one
- 14:34guy. Me.
- 14:36I was like, yeah, it's exactly who I wanted.
- 14:38He was, he was ready to get out of the convention work and ready
- 14:41to get back into education. I love it.
- 14:43Well, any final thoughts or closing things from Luther Rice
- 14:46to encourage someone that's trying to figure out where
- 14:49they're at, where they want to go?
- 14:51Well, I would say so many of us that Luther Rice that are on the
- 14:54faculty are guys and some ladies too, that maybe later in life
- 15:01was called a ministry. I have a heating and air
- 15:04conditioning certification. I had a heating and air
- 15:06conditioning company when I was in the in the 80s and 90s.
- 15:10So it you don't have to be fresh out of high school to go into
- 15:13college and then in the seminary and then into the ministry
- 15:16wherever you're at. If God's calling you to
- 15:18ministry, then God's calling you to prepare and Luther rice Doc.
- 15:22What's our average age like 35 to 50, something like that.
- 15:27And it's never too late. It's never too late.
- 15:30And since our our offerings, our courses are online, really you
- 15:35have no excuse. If God's calling you in the
- 15:37ministry, or maybe you're already in the ministry, but you
- 15:39feel like God is calling you to take it to the next level, then
- 15:42I would encourage you to just go online.
- 15:45Check out Luther Rice, give us a call, and we'd be happy to talk
- 15:49with you. And it's a lot less complicated
- 15:52to get enrolled and to get started than most people
- 15:55probably think. Well, thank you man for coming
- 15:58on today. Appreciate you guys giving us a
- 16:00little bit of time. Looking forward to a lunch
- 16:01tomorrow with you guys. It's always been a highlight in
- 16:04the last three years that Marcus has invited us to be there as
- 16:08friends, not alumni, but as friends of Marcus's.
- 16:11And I think there's more friends of Marcus there than than there
- 16:14are alumni should be the the friends of Marcus.
- 16:17And so we appreciate it and thank you guys for all your
- 16:19work. Until next time, to God be the
- 16:21glory. Great things he has done found.
- 16:24My new name found my, my good grace found that healing, and
- 16:30the tears fell down my face when I found my beginning.
- 16:34It has no ending. I found my second chance, found
- 16:36my best friend, found my forgiveness, found my happiness.
- 16:38I've been singing ever since I found my freedom.
