- Good morning, I'm Kai Rivers and this is Studio Signal — your daily M&E intelligence briefing, brought to you by Harkins Capital. Let's get into it. Alright studio fam, it is Thursday, April 30th. Summer is right around the corner and with it, the all-important summer box office season. And the big question is… will it be a blockbuster or a bust? According to a new forecast from TheWrap, exhibitors might be looking at a pretty solid season, with projections hitting as high as four-point-two billion dollars. But there's a catch. It’s going to be a slow burn. A lot of the heavy hitters aren't slated to drop until later in the summer, so theaters are going to need some patience for the first few weeks. It's a reminder that even in a post-pandemic world, scheduling is everything. Meanwhile, over on the streaming side, Prime Video is making a huge play for the Young Adult audience. Deadline is reporting they've got a whole summer slate of YA originals and splashy book adaptations on deck. We're talking everything from "The Love Hypothesis" to "Clashing Through The Snow". It’s a very clear strategy: hook the next generation of viewers with content they're already obsessed with from other platforms like TikTok. Amazon is betting that a successful book adaptation can create a built-in, highly engaged audience from day one. Shifting over to music, the U.K.'s collection society, PRS for Music, just dropped their 2025 financial report, and the numbers are looking very healthy. Billboard reports they pulled in about one-point-six-seven billion dollars in royalties last year. It’s a huge number that speaks to the continued growth in music consumption across streaming, public performance, and international licensing. It's a strong signal that even with all the disruption in the industry, the value of music rights continues to climb. And speaking of valuable IP, it looks like James Bond is about to be very, very back... just not on the big screen. At least, not yet. Screen Rant got a hands-on look at the new 007 video game, called "007 First Light". This is a huge deal for the franchise. After years of focusing almost exclusively on film, it shows a renewed push to expand the Bond universe into other interactive mediums. A successful game doesn't just generate revenue, it keeps the brand relevant and engages a younger demographic between film cycles. It's a playbook we've seen work for franchises like Invincible, and it's a smart way to keep a legacy character evergreen. Of course, keeping up with all these moves across film, streaming, music, and gaming is a full time job. That's why we do it for you. It's a bit of a weird, mixed day out there... the sector is down just a fraction on average. The big story is in big tech. Meta is getting hammered today, down more than nine percent. On the complete opposite end, Google is soaring, up more than six and a half percent. We're also seeing some red for other tech giants, with Microsoft down over four percent and Nvidia sliding more than three percent. And rounding out the top five, AMC Entertainment is down about three percent. It really seems like the market is digesting a ton of different signals from the tech space today, and that's creating some serious volatility. That's your signal for today. I'm Kai Rivers — thanks for tuning in, and I'll see you tomorrow.
