- 0:57brought to you by the financial support of our listeners. Thanks so much for
- 1:02all your support. Well, we're going we have a bit of a shift
- 1:07here and Call the Police. The last three weeks we played you the first
- 1:14three shows of the first summer replacement series of Call the Police. However,
- 1:22Call the Police was a summer replacement series, which means it could be hard
- 1:27to hold on to cast from year to year because you run the show from
- 1:34June or in some cases July through September, and then they have other projects
- 1:41they've got to get onto and those are the ones that become their focus.
- 1:46So for the second season of Call the Police, again as a summer replacement
- 1:51sponsored by Rensel and over the NBC Radio network, they couldn't get the same
- 1:57cast back with Joseph Julien in the League. Instead they got George Petrie.
- 2:04Patre was probably better known for in some ways his later radio work, where
- 2:10he as in radio's waning days. He got to starring role in BBC revival
- 2:17of Casebook of Gregory Hood and he also played the Falcon. This was the
- 2:23sixth episode of that nineteen forty eight season. It comes from Jelos six nineteen
- 2:28forty eight and it's called the Case of the Sunhower Mystery Mansion Rentso New Rento
- 2:38with Slim present, Call the Police Attention homicide section of playing Squad deten Right.
- 2:47A suspect in yoursne was in according to instruction, between you and the
- 3:01evil outside the law stands the policeman of your community. He gives up his
- 3:07face that you may be said, and sometimes he gives up his life to
- 3:15protect your New rinfo the doulp that contained solium, the scientific sunlight ingredient brings
- 3:30you Call the Police a new series of realistic radio dramas inspired by the couratest
- 3:37work of Police Department. While Opall America Business Commissioner Bill Grant, case number
- 3:54of forty two O eight in the Ashland Police Files was a nightmare, a
- 3:59black panic. We try not to think of on moonless nights as the case
- 4:03of a SunTower mystery mansion. The case really began when Missus Potter, a
- 4:10devotee of ocultism and wealthy mistress of SunTower Mansion, hired a mystic gentleman named
- 4:15Michel Droubier to serve as a cross between a servant and a ghostly ringmaster.
- 4:21This I knew was unhealthy stuff. It didn't become my business until a few
- 4:27months later, one ugly, rainy night. At the night Missus Potter returned
- 4:33from a European junket on hand to meet the train was, of course our
- 4:39boy, the mystico Michel and mister pat he get over New York, he'll
- 4:46begin in the morning. He will not be keep when he gets here.
- 4:51Michel, you look gift. He'll win. The night after you went away,
- 4:57I made a mistakes. I was lonely, and that enormous house civil.
- 5:02It was natural that I should want to talk to our friends, but
- 5:06I was guilty of some fiddle overside. Suddenly and there was an infernal music
- 5:14and laughter. And then as I stood trembling, a throne of skulls manifested
- 5:20in the center of the room, and there there he sat. Oh,
- 5:28I think the master of darkness himself. I remembered the exhaustation of ousambi bad
- 5:35bad magisters in his boots. I shot at those words, and the room
- 5:43was suddenly empty. Thank you, but all, Oh, it is not
- 5:47well. I do not think the house is a safe place for you.
- 5:50Civil Oh what have we done? What have we done? We will talk
- 5:57about it inside. Come. There must be some way, somehow of undoing
- 6:03the harm. Yeah, I'm sorry. The key to the front door,
- 6:10I've left it inside. You go on ahead. I will let myself into
- 6:14the cellar and open the door for you. You won't belong will you here?
- 6:20Will it end? Where will it end? He'll want me, he
- 6:28said. Dealing with beyond is dangerous. Some day you'll discover too late.
- 6:34What was that? Michelle? Michele, michell? Oh? Thank haven't you
- 6:49hello? It isn't you? Go? No? Let me well. I
- 7:31had a holiday yesterday, same as you. We've spent most of the day
- 7:34at the beach. But first my wife said she wanted to do her regular
- 7:39Monday rensel washed and what's more, she wanted my help. Well, you
- 7:44know, I got a big kick out of it, and I found out
- 7:46one thing. A woman has a lot more washed to do than I knew
- 7:50about. First. She did all the white things, tablecloths, she's dish
- 7:55towels, and my shirts. Say the wonderful way that Rensel washed turned out
- 8:00with something to see whiter actually than brand new. The colored washables like my
- 8:05wife's good cotton dresses, your Gingham's and Maya pajamas were even brighter than brand
- 8:09news. That's the astonishing thing that happens when you use new Rensol with solium,
- 8:15the scientific sunlight ingredients. Clothes come whiter and brighter than new. Only
- 8:20Rensel can do that because only new Rensol contains solium. Even on rainy days,
- 8:26even when clothes are dried indoors new Rensol with sunshine and your wash it's
- 8:33so safe for clothes and kind to hand New Rensol with solium. This is
- 8:52part of the wealthy addict of occultism. Was driven home from the station by
- 8:56our mystic suit sayer and servant, Michael Bruge. Half an hour later,
- 9:01she was found strangled at death in the hallway of her enormous home by a
- 9:05passer by or had hurt her Earth friending scream that was the beginning, but
- 9:11there was more to come, lots more all bad, as I discovered as
- 9:15soon as Libby and I walked into SunTower Mansion as the body commissioner. And
- 9:20so I see, Dad, you're the gentleman who heard missus Potter's cries came
- 9:24in to investigate. Yes, I happened to be passing by. I'm a
- 9:26doctor in the name Robert Martin. Any details, Doctor Martin? The woman
- 9:31was obviously strangled, marks in her throat fast and taught it making no Libby,
- 9:37if you'd like to have me make an official report of headquarters? What's
- 9:41this commissioner? Now? Looks Ola Bruger. The matter? Mister Bruger run
- 9:50into a strong arm spook man has hurt whoever attacked him meant to kill?
- 9:54It went on everywhere year What missus putta whom? I We've got? The
- 10:00key? Who went into the cellar? Where's mister Potter in New York?
- 10:05Staid over? Not expected back until the morning. We're going through the cellar
- 10:11to let her in. I started to up the steps. She was calling
- 10:16my name, and and then from somewhere something hit me and I I lost
- 10:24consciousness. Is she all right? Not exactly, But it's a matter BETI
- 10:33she on the far in front of you dead, no stained, I think
- 10:43it was genuine shock. But it was doctor, I'm up reviving. Yes,
- 10:48let me, yes, let's take a walk. I want to get
- 10:52this monkey house. The once over. Levy and I had worked our way
- 11:05through a dozen massive hallways and up and down as many massive staircases getting nowhere,
- 11:09but lost the sound from very nearby stopped us in our tracks. What's
- 11:16that? I thought this joint was empty? What is that? Bill will
- 11:22soon find out? What's the idea? What does this mean? Why?
- 11:26I? Oh, Commissioner Grant? Well if it isn't mister GF. Potter
- 11:31unpacking his expensive luggage, Come money, let be What are you doing here?
- 11:37I'll tell you if you tell me? This is my home? Rumor
- 11:41had it that you were in New York? Rumors? Correct? I was.
- 11:45I just got in went a few minutes ago. What time? What
- 11:48is? What time? Did you train get in at? At eleven fifteen?
- 11:52I just arrived from the station, Senior wife. Since you got in,
- 11:58no, I came in quietly through the eight entrance. I didn't want
- 12:01to disturb her. Where do you think she is? When she got in
- 12:05a couple of hours before I did. She's probably in her bedrooms sleeping peacefully.
- 12:09He's on the drawing room floor, GF. And she's dead. What's
- 12:15murdered, Corroberatidy, Your wife has been murdered. They I commend commisners for
- 12:22sure. Potter. This is doctor Martin. He discovered your wife's body.
- 12:26I just wanted to report that Michel Brouyet is coming around good. And one
- 12:31other item I put out official aspiration, And when I removed his coat for
- 12:35the purpose, this fell out a letter. Under the circumstances, it seems
- 12:39a little bizarre post mark three weeks ago far in stamp interesting. Mister Potter
- 12:48has just returned from Europe. Let's see it, grant eyes chalm, My
- 12:56dear bruget, I'm aware of a romantic relationship between you and my wife.
- 13:01You may think I will overlook this affront, but I assure you that I
- 13:05will avenge it if it means death for both of you. Signed g F.
- 13:09Potter, give me that sorry and annoy your gerald. But you wrote
- 13:13it with your own little hands, and you kept your word. Who Yeah,
- 13:16is alive by the skin of his teeth and a little over an hour
- 13:20ago. You murdered your wife. You're insane? Why my train didn't get
- 13:24in until eleven fifteen? Hello? Yes, yes, oh, I see
- 13:33what time was that? Sure, you're I'll tell him in thing, Tell
- 13:39who mister Potter that the airline is holding the briefcase that he left aboard the
- 13:46plane. What plane was that? The one that arrived from New York at
- 13:50six thirty? To see me? Well, GF, what's the answer to
- 13:56that one? Before I turned around, Potter was making tracks from the open
- 14:01door of the terrace. I gave chase. He turned and let me have
- 14:05both feet and a solar send me crashing back to the water house. A
- 14:09require was too much fun, howling like a horrified bandshe Potter lay still where
- 14:20he fell. We went down to the drive below and heard doctor Martin's diagnosis,
- 14:24just a broken rid, Commissioner, you're sure that's alone. I'm absolutely
- 14:28certain Doctor Martin accompanied has newly made patient of the city hospital, where his
- 14:39rib would heal under the watchful eye of a guardian of the law. The
- 14:41sergeant and I proceeded to the International Airline terminal to claim Potter's briefcase is material
- 14:46evidence. While we were driving back, Bruide was beginning to feel a little
- 14:50better at Suntwer House, and Libby was doing some unrequested over time n officially,
- 14:56mister Buller, I think you know a lot more than you said.
- 15:01On the other hand, I don't think that you're guilty. You are right
- 15:03both times. Then who are you shielding? Of course, if you don't
- 15:09want to talk. Do you believe in the powers of evil in this world
- 15:16or the next? Either one? I believe in them in this world?
- 15:22And how do you see about them? I hate? Are you sure?
- 15:30Look, mister Bruyer, I only took up police work because I thought it
- 15:33was the best way I knew of to protect the rights of decent people.
- 15:37Very well, I shall tell you tell me this murder was actually the work
- 15:46of the men named the fair, yes and murderer and villain from my native
- 15:52island of Ali in the can Where is he now? Where Where is you
- 15:58in that bring special? N he is Emprywhere? Listen? What monthday?
- 16:12No? No, you're not getting longer enough, long enough, Let me
- 16:15go, Let me go. Fee. Five minutes later, when Mat,
- 16:51Joe and I walk into headquarters. Hello, Hello, oh, hello,
- 17:00delil Letty, Hello, Letty Letty, how oh, hello, Lebby,
- 17:12yank match you along on the double back at Santa House much have taken The
- 17:17model escalated three leaps, and then I stood on the doorway of the second
- 17:21floor bedroom Bill Bill No, I saw Libby on her hands and knees,
- 17:29dragging herself toward me, literally over the dead buddy, Michel Doulie. I'm
- 17:56sure all women like New Rento with solium, but there's one particular kind of
- 18:00woman to whom it makes a really special appeal. That's the kind of woman
- 18:03who likes to keep everything she owns fresh, new looking, and shining as
- 18:07nearly perfect as you can. New rensol with solium actually makes the clothes you
- 18:12wash churn out whiter than when they were brand news, and the washable color
- 18:17is brighter than brand new. You can't do better than that, And as
- 18:21a matter of fact, no other soap can do that for you, because
- 18:25no other soap contains solium. So if you want your table linens, towels,
- 18:30and your house dresses too to have a brilliance you've never seen before,
- 18:34use New Rentsel, the only salt that contains the scientific sunlight ingredient, the
- 18:41wonderful solium you find that even on rainy days, even if you have to
- 18:45dry a wash indoors, rensel with solium puts sunshine in your wash. Try
- 18:52it on wash day, say soapy rich new rensel. And the second murder
- 19:10occurred, and Michel Bruyer was found strangled to death, and Suntar mentioned we
- 19:15got to Libby out of the joint fast back at headquarters. She began to
- 19:18talk to Maggio and me incoherently at first, and then Ryer was just telling
- 19:23me that the murder was committed by someone named lay. Wait a minute,
- 19:30there's a thing in the paper by a guy named Lafevre. What about him.
- 19:34He's a guy who's running for president in an island in the Caribbean.
- 19:38Got the article just a second. Oh, here there's page three where yeah,
- 19:48and July three, Evan la Fever has announced his candidacy for president to
- 19:53replace the late manual the girl recently assassinated by the Araus population. It couldn't
- 19:59be the same with favor. He's two thousand miles from here. Go ahead
- 20:06to be Bruje you mentioned with one. Suddenly there was this music, this
- 20:11wild, unreal music, and the heavy panting of a drum and people laughing
- 20:15down below? What people laughing down below? No? People? The place
- 20:19was empty. What are you telling this, miss Tyler? What happened?
- 20:25Just what happened? I can't explain it any more than you can. What
- 20:30was that? Come in? I just dropped by a Commiss nerve to say
- 20:33that our patient is conscious and under police Garden City Hospital. Potter, Yes,
- 20:38I just left him. He couldn't have slipped out about forty five minutes
- 20:42ago. No, definitely not. Then that let's Potter out? Sure?
- 20:48Sure does Tavious. What we're dealing with here? Ghosts? Goblins? Joe?
- 20:53Yeah, go out and brought up a witch doctor ian him the case.
- 20:56Get a real lallapalozo with a two headed mask. If I might suggest,
- 21:00h I I was going to say that, since we all know that
- 21:06ghosts don't exist, we might make a simple assumption in this case. I
- 21:10mean, somebody could be rigging up a ghost scare, possibly, though I
- 21:15can't imagine the reason. The reason. Could there be anything valuable at Suntar
- 21:22House, Doctor Martin, Yes, there's Potter well enough to have a little
- 21:26conversation. Yes he is, Okay, let's get to the hospital. He's
- 21:30the boy to give us the answers. You better talk, Potter. If
- 21:38you didn't tell your wife you intended to. Somebody had gotten the sibyl before
- 21:41you, and you gave us that funny timetable Alibia because you were scared.
- 21:45But I I've told you all I know, Commissioner. But there's nothing of
- 21:51peculiar value at Suntar House, I absolutely certain, Potter. Yes, yes,
- 21:56there's nothing in any of the rooms that we know about rooms you know
- 22:00about What does that mean? Well, there's some lost space and Suna House.
- 22:06That's all grant, that's all, is it? That's all? Come
- 22:10on, Come on, Well, we rebuilt the right wing and the architect
- 22:15did a sloppy job and left a foot or so the floor space out of
- 22:18the new blueprint. It was really a better house the way it was,
- 22:22and we bought it from him from him from who a foreign chap named something
- 22:26like l Fane. Yes, well, yes, that's it, Edmund la
- 22:34Febre. He was somewhere from the Caribbean, the island of Hanai. I
- 22:40believe I made a bee line for the original architect at Suntar House and came
- 22:51away with the blueprints, burning the ten o'clock oil with compass and slide rule.
- 22:55I finally scared Maggie out of a year's ago. There it is,
- 22:59there, it lays, I, holy, don't compare my ever loving Watton.
- 23:03A fast glance portrays that there's a discrepancy yielding US four and a half
- 23:07feet of unaccounted floor space in the attic reaches of Suntar House. Come to
- 23:12the mansion. Come on, wait, I get my car. I don't
- 23:15need it. My guns inside. I got a gun, went after that
- 23:25attic arm with axe and crowbar and started tapping for hollow sounds. Maggio took
- 23:30the front wall. I took the rear, and then Maggio, X,
- 23:37what are you from? We'll soon know. Look at it, crumble sergeant,
- 23:45he ask me, this is it? Have a look. It's the
- 23:55four and a half feet between the real outer wall and his phony partition.
- 24:00It's very nice, chief on it. It's as empty as the biggest hat
- 24:03in Edinburgh. You notice, I notice. I also notice it's papered,
- 24:07so value of those can come in very small parcels. Magio start ripping the
- 24:12wallpaper off wherever it looks a little loose. As you say, commission it
- 24:22Hey, yeah, that's what miss Tylers. You let him have a picnic
- 24:32down there. Start up. I can't stop us now, ain't got an
- 24:37angle. Lend me a gun and you keep looking. What are you gonna
- 24:41do? Fire a shot and see if they don't break up the celebration.
- 24:47I kept working over the wallpaper while Magio went out to the head of the
- 24:48stairs. You fire that shot down into the darkness. I waited. The
- 24:56music was still, and then two shots came up out of the darkness,
- 25:03and Maggio staggered into the room, empty handed and gripping his right arm.
- 25:07Chief, Chief, mat you it's coming coming, someone that's come out to
- 25:17stairs. What is it? Sun? My gun? Where's my gun?
- 25:26The stick case? When I got hurt me, Hey, this is really
- 25:37and there was a dark figure in the doorway. I reached reflectively for the
- 25:44gun that wasn't in my holster, found my flash light and turned it on
- 25:47the shadowy mouse. You will be wise enough to respect the gun. I
- 25:52trust you could miss with the lightning right oddly with six bullets, Commissioner,
- 25:59and the logic in what you say, Doctor Martin. By the way,
- 26:03I just located the valuable with a roll of sixteen millimeter film plastered behind the
- 26:10wallpaper where the former tenant, mister Lefevre left it. I will take it,
- 26:14please. What's this thing? Worth? Martin? Bruyer evidently considered it
- 26:18pretty important. He started a ghost scare here at Suntwer House to keep people
- 26:22away while he searched. But Bruyer did is none of my business? Arrivals.
- 26:26Weren't you both after this little roll of film for reasons of your own?
- 26:30You're only an agreement. At one point the ghost scare was a very
- 26:33useful smoke screen, a hocus pocus worked with records and a public address system
- 26:37film. But essentially you and Brulier were mortal political enemies. You must have
- 26:42been. You kill him when he was about to enlist Libby and the police
- 26:45on his side. I have no time to talk. You also kill missus
- 26:48Potter to keep her from intruding on this vital hunting ground. But one point
- 26:52I don't get. Why did you enlist the services of the police. I
- 26:56needed official help. I needed it badly enough. Take the risks involved.
- 27:00I had to get those architects, Prince and look at the missing room Walkington
- 27:04to discover that I am here without a visa. And you wanted me to
- 27:07wind up your unfinished business, just as you have done. And now,
- 27:11if you don't want to be the last business I finished, give me the
- 27:15film not a chance? Very well, play it your own way. Best
- 27:23wishes the grant. Well, well, who was it, Santa Claus?
- 27:38Oliver Tyler? Did I chill him? Bill? No, it just knocked
- 27:47his artillery. I'm out of commission. Good news. I got better news.
- 27:52Angel, you didn't kill me. As soon as Maggio came around.
- 28:06Levy and I ran the sixteen millimeter films throw in a private projection voot.
- 28:11There were documentary proof of Lafevre's intimate association with certain rootless elements in Hanai enough
- 28:17to kill his chances for elections. Broyer was after the film to squelch Lafevre's
- 28:22chances. Martin, on Lafevre's payroll, was in this country to destroy the
- 28:26film. So no, what happens? Phil Michel wins Levi a mystical man
- 28:33of goodwill? How do you mean we shipped the film to Hanai tomorrow and
- 28:37the mystery zoof except for one thing? How did you manage to appear just
- 28:44in time? Oh? Yeah, yeah, Well I got on to Martin.
- 28:48I contacted the New York Medical Association, found out there was no listing
- 28:52at all for a doctor Robert Martin, and I came looking for you,
- 28:56very sly little lady. And what do we get for it in the end,
- 29:00a movie, at least a free movie. All it lacked a lot.
- 29:04Who's the chance a finish? You know, a moment when the guy
- 29:10and the gal stands face to face and he murmurs something sentimental and then draws
- 29:15her to him. Bill, Please, and what's the matter, sweetheart.
- 29:21I'm only trying to show you what I mean by a lovely finish. Bill,
- 29:27Oh, Bill, Commissioner Grant will be back in just a moment.
- 29:42With the Call of Police. Award a Feller this week, presented to a
- 29:47police officer who drove his motorcycle headlong into a hail of bullets to capture three
- 29:52vicious bank Roberts. But first, you know, there's no reason why your
- 29:56house shouldn't have the best. There is the problems to know what it is

- 30:48traffic duty in downtown Los Angeles, Officer Mayor picked up a radio police call
- 30:52alerting all units to a bank hold up at Eighth in Vermont. Wheeling his
- 30:55motorcycle, he roared in the direction of the robbery. Several blocks from the
- 30:59bank. Mayors spotted the hold up car as it careened around a corner.
- 31:03It's getting crazily. For a half block, it crashed against the wall.
- 31:07The three bandits leaped out and, using the overturned car as a barricade,
- 31:10opened fire on the radio car number seventy one, which had led the chase.
- 31:15Mayor wrote his motorcycle directly into the hail of bullets. Then he too
- 31:18opened fire. A bitch gun battle lasted for several minutes. Before two of
- 31:22the robbers went down severely wounded himself. Officer Mayor apprehended all three gunmen.
- 31:30His high courage in face of direct fire, his resolute fortitude, and gallant
- 31:33devotion to tute are in keeping with the highest tradition of the police forces of
- 31:37America. Congratulations to Motorcycle Officer Robert C. Mayer, Chief C. B.

- 33:24Be sure to listen next week Call the Police. Welcome back. You know.
- 33:39This is actually the first episode of Call the Police i'd heard. In
- 33:45fact, it used to be old time radio Researchers group. They have something
- 33:52called a Singles and Doubles collection. You can look it up sometime. It
- 33:58basically contains shows kind of as the name implies, there's really only one or
- 34:02two episodes out there. Well, of course Call the Police is up to
- 34:07five, but this was in that collection. The first time I heard it,
- 34:10I got an impression. I'm not certain, you know. Obviously it
- 34:14wasn't what they were going for because the program I thought of hadn't existed yet.
- 34:19But it reminded me of Scooby Doo. All right. I think on
- 34:23second listening there's a little bit more international intrigue than you would get in an
- 34:30average episode of Scooby Doo. So I'll maybe revise my remarks ever so slightly,
- 34:39but still still had a little bit of that feel to it. Well,
- 34:45we actually only have one more episode to call the police and it'll be
- 34:49next week's show. Well, I hope you will be with us. Then
- 34:52join us tomorrow for Let George Do It. In the meanwhile, if you
- 34:55have a comment, send it to me box thirteen eight detectives dot net,
