- 0:07On Sunday, November 12, 1978, the Houston Oilers faced a new England Patriots at Chaffer Stadium for Week 11 of the 1978 NFL season.
- 0:16Houston entered the game with a 6-4 record under quarterback Dan Pastarini and head coach Bum Phillips.
- 0:22The Patriots were led by Steve Grogan and entered this game with an 8-2 record atop the AFC East under head coach Chuck Fairbanks.
- 0:29This audio recording is from the radio broadcast featuring announcer Gil Santos.
- 0:59Here's the starting lineup for today's game.
- 1:19For the Patriots offensively at wide receiver Stanley Morgan, left side to Leon Gray, left side to Garret John Hanna, center of Bill Langkite, right side to Sam Adams,
- 1:27right tackle Shelby Jordan, right end Russ Francis, wide receiver Harold Jackson, quarterback Steve Grogan, the head back Andy Johnson, pullback Sam Cunningham,
- 1:37and for the Oilers defensively at left end will be James Young, at middle guard will be Curly Cump, right end Elvin Bethea, the linebackers Robert Brazeal,
- 1:51Greg Bigum, Steve Kiner, former Patriots, and Ted Washington, cornerback Greg Stemrich, Willie Alexander, the safeties Bill Currier and Mike Rinefeld.
- 2:03The Patriots have won the toss, have elected to receive, and they'll be going into that brisk win that Gil commented on earlier and it is picking up as we go on.
- 2:13Houston Oilers will have to win that their back to start off this game. You know how about the Oiler defense, they're not that far away from the Patriots overall defensive play.
- 2:23I think the league stats will point that out. Houston defensively is number four in the conference, the Patriots defensively are number two.
- 2:32So Houston is playing very strong, particularly against the run. It'll be interesting to see how you've got strength against strength going on both sides here today.
- 2:40The Oiler are running game against the Patriots rushing defense and the Patriot running game against the Oiler rushing defense.
- 2:46Right, similar defense, they also play the 3-4 and they play it quite well, so the Patriots will be looking at a defense that they've seen a lot of, even in their practices throughout the past few years with their 3-4.
- 2:58The Patriots of course have the edge offensively, they rank number one in total offense in the American Football Conference, they rank number one rushing and they're number four passing.
- 3:09Houston on the other hand, ranked seventh, totally fourth rushing. Well here we are ready for the kickoff and here's Gil Aroni.
- 3:17The ball keeps falling off the tee, I keep holding off waiting for it to go before I turn it over to you, but we're almost set to go.
- 3:24Have a holder.
- 3:25Have a holder.
- 3:26This is on which side?
- 3:28Tony Fritz to kick it off.
- 3:30The wind is at right now 15 to 20 miles per hour and the temperature is 48 degrees, so whistle blows and what the Oilers have done is bring over Kirk Knoff to hold the ball at the 35 yard line.
- 3:48The Oilers kicking off left to right, rich into the ball and it hits it short and fast. Coming up under it is Playborn at the 15-20 on the left 25-30, 35-40, 45, Cymint Field and Spelldown at the Houston 47-48 yard line.
- 4:04Raymond Playborn very nearly popped that one all the way, got a good running start and was off to the races down the left sideline until he was hauled down at about the 48 yard line and that's where the Patriots offense will go to work first and then.
- 4:17At their own 48, moving from right to left.
- 4:21Well, it wasn't a strong kick by Tony Fritz, but the wind at his back came down along the left sideline.
- 4:27They had the return set up, left, Playborn just took it and barreled right up to the left side and as Gil pointed, almost broken.
- 4:33Patriots out in the two-tide in offense, Hassell back right and now Francis shifts from left to the right wing, Cunningham and Johnson to the running back.
- 4:41They give us to Andy Johnson to the right, cuts it back up the middle inside the 45 to the 43 and a gain of five, it'll be second down in five for the Patriots.
- 4:50Greg Bingham and Ted Washington make the tackle for Houston. Let's pause 15 seconds. This is the BZ Patriots football network.
- 4:58And Shelby Jordan.
- 5:00A lot of the ink goes to Leon Gray and John Hannah, but Sam Adams and Shelby Jordan have been doing an outstanding job this year.
- 5:08Harold Jackson comes in as a wide receiver. So now they go with a normal set, second down and six.
- 5:15Andy Johnson.
- 5:23He is to the line of scrimmage and that is it. It will be third down and six.
- 5:28Now let's look to the defense of the Houston Oilers with a three-four, their fourth in the AFC and total defense.
- 5:36James Young, Curley Culp, Elvin Bethea.
- 5:40I said Curley Culp's a big man, but so is Elvin Bethea on that left side. Outstanding defensive lineman.
- 5:45Good linebackers, Robert Brazile. He is tough. Greg Bingham, Steve Kiner, Ted Washington.
- 5:4952 Brazil considered as as good as anybody in the National Football League at that outside linebacking position.
- 5:55Third down six, Russ Francis in motion.
- 5:59Brogan to throw. All the time in the world. It is complete. Russ Francis.
- 6:0731 yard line first down. Mike Reinfeld makes a tackle.
- 6:14Well, the reason he was able to get that pass off is because he had all time in the world to throw that football.
- 6:19He was following Russ Francis all the way. Francis in motion. You can't see it on your screen, but he's in motion to the right of the screen.
- 6:26He went out on a delay pattern, but you can see the outstanding blocking. I said Curley Culp was important.
- 6:31They had two men on him. Here comes Russ Francis. 81 in to make the catch in the big first down for the Patriots.
- 6:37And now Horace Ivy is in the backfield as Andy Johnson comes out for New England.
- 6:42Cunningham. Sam Cunningham. 17 yard line first down.
- 6:49Greg Stimrick and Mike Reinfeld stop him in the secondary for the Houston Oilers.
- 6:56There it is. Number 39, Sam Cunningham. John Hannah. 73 outstanding block there.
- 7:01You can see what he did to that defensive man and do not try to grab this man with just an arm. You better tackle him.
- 7:07Number 78, Curley Culp, I said was very important. He was blocked on that play.
- 7:11A good job by the offensive center. Number 57, Bill and Kitas.
- 7:15Curley's got to have a big day this afternoon if they have hopes of winning.
- 7:19First down at the Houston 17 yard line. Logging just underway, driving into the wind. Cunningham.
- 7:25He has two yards to the 15. It will be second and eight. Curley Culp was there. He cut him down.
- 7:31The Houston secondary has Willie Alexander, Bill Currier, Mike Reinfeld and Greg Stimrick.
- 7:38I gave them in reverse order, but as Stimrick and Alexander in the corners, Currier and Reinfeld starting for Curtin off.
- 7:43They have their work cut off, Charlie. As you mentioned in the pregame show, two burners on the outside for the Patriots and Russ Francis at tight end.
- 7:50One thing Russ Francis is doing, you will see him in motion. You will see him set up on one side, moved to the other.
- 7:56One of the reasons being the linebackers for the Houston orders play weak and strong. They have to flip flop with it.
- 8:01Cunningham carries. Cunningham carries.
- 8:06Good play, Robert Brazile number 52. That is going to be an interesting battle out there because the left side of the offensive line, Leon Gray, John Hanna, is very, very strong.
- 8:17They like the run to that side, but on the other side for Houston, they have got Elvin Bothay and Robert Brazile.
- 8:23So it is going to be a real fight on the left side of the offensive line for New England.
- 8:28Sam Adams shall be joining on the right side of the line for the Patriots.
- 8:32We are a little tired of all the publicity on the other side of the line.
- 8:35The Patriots feel that Shelby Jordan is playing as well as Leon Gray. Gray is all pro.
- 8:40There you see Francis in motion right side.
- 8:43Brogan Spass is way under thrown. Was he hit before he made the release? It was third down and eight.
- 8:49They had linebackers coming, Charlie. That is how Brazile number 52 and also number 57.
- 8:55Kiner is coming after the quarterback. He was deflected. But he was looking for Francis all the way on that play.
- 9:01So David Posey is in for the New England Patriots.
- 9:08Field goal attempt upcoming. Dick Kahn will be holding. This will be into the win.
- 9:13The line of scrimmage, the 15. He will be kicking from the neighborhood of the 22 yard line.
- 9:17They will mark it at the 22. An attempt of 32 yards.
- 9:22We are four minutes and 13 seconds into the ball game.
- 9:28It is up. It is good. The Patriots have the lead. The score. New England three. Houston nothing.
- 9:3610-43. Left to go. First period.
- 9:40Do you know me? When I travel with my cats, people recognize me. But without them, they don't.
- 9:45So I carry the American Express card.
- 9:48Now airlines and shops in Germany and France all over, recognize me as someone deserving first class treatment.
- 9:55And believe me, it's easier to cut this than this.
- 10:01To apply for a card, look for this display wherever the card is welcomed.
- 10:05The American Express card. Tontli form the R.
- 10:11Cast iron where you need it. Or strengthen accuracy.
- 10:16Pardent gears and ball bearing construction. For long life and dependability.
- 10:22Fidgety motors with power to spare. Rockwell builds tools that way for a reason.
- 10:28Because a power tool is only as good as the job it can do. And just how long it can do it.
- 10:34Rockwell, your work can't afford anything less.
- 10:39Oh, the things people do to decide between two TV shows they want to watch.
- 10:46Well, now you don't have to decide anymore. Because with Sony's Betamax video recorder, you can actually watch a show on one channel.
- 10:53While you're videotaping a show on another channel. That way you get to see both of dreaming up new ways of deciding.
- 11:00Okay, first one to the TV set. Choose.
- 11:05We're not exactly alike. I'm wearing JCPenney plain pockets jeans. And I'm wearing the world's best selling jeans.
- 11:13My jeans are made of top heavy denim with good looks and great styling. And might have this fancy stitching on the back pocket.
- 11:20But plain pockets only cost you ten dollars. JCPenney plain pockets. The big difference between us and them is the pocket. And the price.
- 11:30Off by lunch.
- 11:35But game breaking plays the hottest new craze all crows in action. The latest in fashion. Great talking views and late breaking news.
- 11:43The pregame show that has it all. NFL 78.
- 11:46N-E-C-C.
- 11:50It's afternoon. Driving all the way to the Houston 34 yard line. A 13 yard run for Cunningham. And he is really picking up big gobs, chunks of yardages.
- 12:05He just hits across the line of scrimmage and then he's under a full head of steam. And he is very much, the Patriots are very much intending to go to the left side of the order, or the right side of the order defense.
- 12:12Five carries for Cunningham in 30 yards rushing. The Patriots are first in ten at the order 24. Rances again to the right wing.
- 12:21Ivory now in the back field replacing Johnson. Rogan calling signals. It is Ivory coming up the middle and Horace spins down to about the 21 yard line and a gain of three.
- 12:30It'll be second down and seven for the Patriots.
- 12:33Robert Brazil makes the tackle for the Houston Oilers at the 21 yard line. Oilers, white helmets, white shirts and powder blue football pants. The Patriots red shirts, these red helmets and white pants.
- 12:45Sellout crowded shaper the fifth in a row this season. One more home game. Tickets available for that one against Buffalo here on December 10th.
- 12:53Patriots shooting for their eighth win in a row.
- 12:57I'd Morgan as wide to the left side. Francis again lines up on the right wing. Johnson in the back field with Cunningham second and seven. It's Cunningham to the left side.
- 13:05Across the 20 yard line fighting for yardage and gets down to about the 17 before he is cut down.
- 13:11Early Culp making the tackle for the Houston Oilers out of the secondary health mouth, C.O. Whittington.
- 13:17The ball is spotted at the order 17 where it will be third down and three for the Patriots at the Houston 17 yard line.
- 13:26Now Hasselbeck is out and Jackson comes in. The Patriots will go to two wide receivers. The Oilers change up bringing in two different defensive backs.
- 13:34The starters, Stemwreck and Alexander come in with Reinfeldt and Whittington going out.
- 13:41Once again this strong running to the left side is going to set up a boot leg pretty soon for Grogan.
- 13:46Right third down and three. Back to throw Grogan. Look, fires to the right side and he overthrows the ball. And all three receivers on the right side.
- 13:56Francis, Harold, Jackson and Morgan all three on the right side. I don't believe it was the type of pattern they had intended to pull off there.
- 14:02There seemed to be some mistake someplace and Grogan just let it fly out of the end zone. It had no chance for a completion.
- 14:09And just fourth down the drive stalls at the order 17 where David Posey will attempt another field goal.
- 14:16The kick will come from the 24 yard line. It's a 34 yard field goal attempt where David Posey again into the win.
- 14:27They con the hole. The Patriots lead three nothing. Conner waiting the snap. The ball is down. The kick is up by Posey.
- 14:33And right down the chute. Posey two for two this afternoon. His second field goal of the game.
- 14:39So let's take a time out with a score of the Patriots six and the others nothing.
- 14:46Fairmont, Ballari? I like both. I really haven't decided yet.
- 14:50Ballari and Fairmont. They both seem like good cars.
- 14:54Introducing the Ballari-Fairmont choice for 1979.
- 14:57Statistics show that this car, the 1979 Plymouth Ballari will be compared against Ford, Fairmont many thousands of times in the coming months.
- 15:05That makes sense because in many ways they're very comparable cars.
- 15:09The EPA classifies each of them as a midsize.
- 15:12EPA estimates that with six cylinder engines their mileage is about the same.
- 15:16But look at these differences in Ballari's favor.
- 15:18Ballari four door seat six, Fairmont five.
- 15:22Ballari has a longer wheelbase, wider track and greater curb weight.
- 15:26We think Ballari is more a car.
- 15:28But surprisingly when you equip both cars with six cylinder engines of automatic transmissions, sticker price is about the same.
- 15:35You're looking for mileage and a solid substantial car. That's Ballari.
- 15:45So David Posey hits two field goals here in the first quarter and with a minute and 13 seconds to play the Patriots have a six to nothing lead.
- 15:52Twice they have driven inside the Euler 20 yard line, twice the drives of stalls.
- 15:57All right Posey set to kick it off.
- 15:59Jurgen and Poole are deep for Houston at the 10 yard line.
- 16:02Posey kicking into the wind.
- 16:04David into the ball and a flat kick and it is bouncing away from one of the short men picked up by Jurgen at the 20, at the middle of the 25.
- 16:11Oh, well ahead.
- 16:13At the 27 yard line by Mosi Tatupu.
- 16:17He really labeled him.
- 16:19Now it's one of those occasions when a tackler is down there and he's under balance and he just sits and waiting and the balker runs right into him.
- 16:27He makes a couple of jukes by holding his ground.
- 16:29He came right into him and just stuck him right in the shoulder pad right back on his feet.
- 16:34The ball is at the 28 yard line where the Houston Ullers will take over first and ten at their own 28.
- 16:41Kenborough is wide to the left.
- 16:43The Ullers have castor to the right wing and barber tight to the right.
- 16:47And back to Wilson and Campbell.
- 16:49First down, they're on 28 to give us to Campbell.
- 16:51Wide to the right.
- 16:52Oh, a big hole at the 30 and finally brought down by three guys at the 35.
- 16:56Fumble on the play and the Patriots, I believe, recovered.
- 17:00Let's see if they're going to blow the ball.
- 17:02There it is.
- 17:03Patriots recovered.
- 17:04All right, hit.
- 17:05Hurdle was there with Greg Schaum and Sam Hunt to make this.
- 17:10It was a little bit of a late fumble, but Earl Campbell sweeping to the right side had a big lane if he just continued to go.
- 17:16But he hesitated, made a little dip inside, waited for his guard to get out there and then went out.
- 17:21But he actually could have gone out there all by himself.
- 17:24That hesitation really helped because then the Patriots were able to pursue.
- 17:27They got over there and as they were just all falling down, it wasn't any vicious hit by any means.
- 17:32And Campbell just popped up the ball.
- 17:34It was a little late and it was questionable whether the official was going to give it to the Patriots or not.
- 17:38And they did.
- 17:39One of the people in the hit was Raymond Playbourne also.
- 17:42And Playbourne had been Campbell's roommate when they played together at Texas.
- 17:46And as a matter of fact, Playbourne and Campbell will room together this off season when they can both go back to the University of Texas for some extra study work.
- 17:56They're very, very good friends off the field.
- 17:58So the Patriots take over on the fumble recovery at the Euler 35-yard line.
- 18:03And with 54 seconds to go in the first quarter, the Patriots are in a golden position leading 6-0.
- 18:08Right, and they get another shot with the wind at their back, Gil, and I just have to emphasize that the wind factor in the first quarter,
- 18:14and it looked like perhaps they weren't going to have another shot at it, but now they do at the 35.
- 18:19Once again, they've dominated this game offensively.
- 18:23They've moved.
- 18:24Most times they've had the ball.
- 18:25They've been able to move.
- 18:26They've had great field position on the opening series starting at the Euler 49, moved down inside the 15, got a field goal out of that.
- 18:34And then starting at their own 20 on the second series, moved again down to the 20-yard line, came up with another field goal.
- 18:40So although they have dominated offensively, only coming up with 6 points.
- 18:44And you know, one touchdown can wipe that out.
- 18:45So it's important that they put on another good drive here and perhaps get the touchdown that they do need.
- 18:51The Patriots are first and 10 at the Euler 35.
- 18:54Brassus is tied to the right.
- 18:55Cunningham and Johnson are split in the backfield.
- 18:57Grogan, Playaction, fake on first down.
- 18:59Steps back to throw and it is incomplete, intended for Jackson.
- 19:02Jackson was at the 20 the ball fell at about the 10, way incomplete.
- 19:06It was overthrown.
- 19:07This program was authorized by the New England Patriots Football Club of the National Football League solely for the entertainment of our audience.
- 19:13And any broadcast, rebroadcast, or other use of the accounts or descriptions of this game without the express written consent of the New England Patriots Football Club or WBZ Radio is prohibited.
- 19:22The Bills have tied Miami at 7-7 in the first quarter of their game.
- 19:26Buffalo 7 in Miami 7 first quarter at Buffalo.
- 19:31We're going to take a station break after the next play.
- 19:33The ball is down at the Houston 35 yard line.
- 19:36Second down in 10 Patriots 49 seconds to go.
- 19:39First quarter at 6-0 pass.
- 19:41Jackson wide to the left.
- 19:42Morgan wide to the right.
- 19:43Brassus tight to the left side.
- 19:44The backs in a wide split.
- 19:46Grogan back to throw and second down.
- 19:48Long drop.
- 19:49Now he's rolling out to the right.
- 19:50Now he fires back across the side.
- 19:52It is complete to Morgan at the 20, at the 15, at the 10, and down to the Houston Euler 3.
- 19:57First down and touchdown to go.
- 20:00Now, Grogan to Morgan.
- 20:03Credit that play to Stanley Morgan taking advantage of Steve Grogan rolling out of the pocket.
- 20:08It was a straight drop back setup.
- 20:10He didn't have it so he was forced out of the pocket, rolled out to the right side.
- 20:14Now Stanley Morgan started cutting back across the middle.
- 20:17Grogan spotted him, hit him with a strike, and then Stanley just ran for the left corner, almost got in.
- 20:23And he's really disappointed that he did stop at the 3 yard line.
- 20:26Veteran cornerback Willie Alexander brought him down at the 3 yard line preventing the touchdown.
- 20:31So a 32 yard pass.
- 20:33That's the end of the first quarter.
- 20:36That is the end of the first quarter.
- 20:38The score at the end of the first quarter at Shaper Stadium in Foxboro, the Patriots 6, and the order is nothing.
- 20:43Back at Shaper Stadium in Foxboro in just a few minutes after our next break, you know,
- 20:48Capiletti will be taking phone calls at 2545678 to discuss the first half of the game with you.
- 20:53Here's the way the scoring went in the first half.
- 20:56At the 10-43 mark of the opening quarter, David Fossey hit a 32 yard field goal, 3 nothing Patriots.
- 21:01A minute and 13 seconds to go in the first quarter, David Fossey a 34 yard field goal, 6 nothing Patriots.
- 21:0714-55 in the second quarter, 5 seconds into the second quarter, for a 5-3 yard run, 13 nothing Patriots.
- 21:15Later on in the second quarter, with a 26 to play, Fossey hit a 37 yard field goal, and they could 16 nothing Patriots.
- 21:21Then with 3-24 to go in the quarter, Steve Gruggen bootlegging in from 7 yards off, and the Patriots were on top 23 to nothing.
- 21:29The others then recovered a fumbled punt by Stanley Morgan at the Patriots 35 yard line, and they drilled it in the score.
- 21:36Rob Coppenter from 8 yards off, 23 to 7, Fossey missing a 38 yard field goal in the final play of the first half.
- 21:43And that's the way it stands at half time, the Patriots leading by 16 points.
- 21:47A strong all-around two-way performance for the Patriots offensively and defensively, as they shoot for their eighth win in a row.
- 21:53The Patriots on top 23-7 at the half, the Dolphins are leading Buckeleau 23-14 in their game up in Buckeleau.
- 22:01Meanwhile, at this half time here at Shaper Stadium in Foxborough with a score, the New England Patriots 23 and the Houston Orders 7.

- 24:50Pretty good, I'm Geno.
- 24:51I'm here.
- 24:52I want to ask you one question.
- 24:54Go ahead.
- 24:55What is the percentage of plays that are called by Fairbanks in a game?
- 25:02The percentage of plays that, well, they're actually not called by Fairbanks.
- 25:07It's like a conference amongst the coaches.
- 25:10They have two coaches up in the press box who are sending the plays down, and they're sending them two chucks
- 25:15before they talk to him about them, and Ron Earhart and Ray Burry calling them from up here.
- 25:21So then they send them in.
- 25:24But I would say that a great portion of them are sent in, and Steve Grogan has the option to check it off
- 25:29once he gets up the line of scrimmage or call a play date.
- 25:32He would rather call in the huddle.
- 25:34Of course, it's something that is understood amongst them.
- 25:36But I would say that a greater portion is called by the coaches.
- 25:39Yeah, have you heard anything about the development of Steve Kiner?
- 25:42Are we playing for Euston or are we back in position?
- 25:44Well, he's held down that regular linebacker position for the Euston Oilers ever since he left the Patriots.
- 25:50He's been there a long time, and he's obviously doing the job.
- 25:55We've got to go ahead.
- 25:57Okay, and also, Sam, I called you a few weeks ago, and I told you I thought he might be off through,
- 26:02but I don't think he'll be doing much better.
- 26:04No, as good as he can.
- 26:06Well, Sam was a little disappointed in what he has been doing earlier in the campaign.
- 26:10Like Gil has said, he fought out some shoulder and knee injuries early,
- 26:14and he wanted to carry the ball more, and he felt like he could be doing more for the team,
- 26:19and he just needed a little vote of confidence.
- 26:21He got it from the coaching staff that gave him the ball, and he's been doing the right thing.
- 26:25He's just been outstanding in the last eight area codes, six, one, seven, if you're calling from out of town.
- 26:30Go ahead, let's take another call. You're on here.
- 26:33You were on here.
- 26:35Hello?
- 26:37Okay, I guess we lost that caller for a moment, but perhaps we'll get it back again.
- 26:42All right, is he there now?
- 26:44No, not yet.
- 26:45Okay, well, let's look at some of the first half stats. As soon as we get this cleared up, we'll take some more calls.
- 26:50Pastorini is three for nine, 44 yards.
- 26:52Grogan, eight for 12, 124 yards.
- 26:56And the total offense, this is the story of the Patriots eighted by Great Steel Position,
- 27:00224 yards total offense, and the others 93.
- 27:04Okay, we got another phone call. Go ahead, you're on here.
- 27:07Hello?
- 27:08Hello, do you know?
- 27:09Hi.
- 27:10Yeah.
- 27:11Andy Johnson, 4K for 12 yards.
- 27:13Grogan himself has carried four yards, four times for 21 yards.
- 27:17Earl Campbell, the other side has carried 10 times 31 yards, and he has come into this game with some...
- 27:25horrific running back and football player, and the Patriots have done well to contain this guy up to half times.
- 27:32So that's really the story of the stats. Let's go back to some phone calls. Go ahead. Hello?
- 27:36Hello, do you know?
- 27:37Hi, how are you?
- 27:38First time caller.
- 27:39Okay.
- 27:40I'm a season ticket holder. I'm a little under the weather today. I was just wondering, a point of information.
- 27:45All right.
- 27:46If the Patriots go to the Super Bowl, do we as season ticket holders get preference? Do we get any preference in prize getting on the amount of tickets?
- 27:54If you're a season ticket holder, yes. Every season ticket holder will be a lot.
- 27:58It's so many per ticket that they have as a season ticket.
- 28:02You know what I mean. If you have 10 tickets, you're going to be allowed so many to purchase as a Super Bowl.
- 28:08Does the Patriots send off any information on that?
- 28:11Well, they haven't got to that point yet. It's a little premature at this time.
- 28:15Well, I don't think so.
- 28:16You guys keep doing a good job, right?
- 28:18Well, we're not doing it. I'll tell you that.
- 28:20You guys really play with...
- 28:22They're playing outstanding football, and they're taking advantage of opportunities that are given to them, and that is what a good team will do.
- 28:30And they're doing it, and they did it today. Now, mind you, Houston is a team to be reckoned with.
- 28:35I'm sitting here, and we got a nice comfortable 23-7 lead at this point, but I think they're still in the ballgame.
- 28:41Houston Oilers can move that football, and if they get any opportunities, it could be a little closer than second half.
- 28:47I won't get them. Don't worry.
- 28:48Oh, I'm not worried, but I'm a little bit aware of the fact that they can do it. Okay?
- 28:53Thanks, you know.
- 28:54Alright, thank you. Alright, go ahead and take another call. Go ahead, join here.
- 28:57Hello? Hello?
- 29:05Yeah, you got your radio on, too?
- 29:07Hello?
- 29:08Oh, we're having no difficulty once again.
- 29:11Alright, well, go ahead, you're on here. Hello?
- 29:15Alright, half-time here at Schaper Stadium.
- 29:18We're trying to get some phone calls, and we've had a little difficulty as of late here, and if we can get that cleared up, we'll take some more calls.
- 29:26Okay, so we're going to take a look at the point once again, the Patriots leading the Oilers 23-7 at half-time.
- 29:32Okay, the half-time score is Patriots 23-7, stand by for the second half tick off.

- 31:50He is now coming back out on the field. We're getting ready for a second half action.
- 31:54One other late school we have. Chicago has gone out on top of Minnesota 7 to nothing in the first period.
- 32:01And also New Orleans on top of Atlanta in the first period. 3 to nothing.
- 32:068.15 seconds. This is the BZ Patriots football net worth.
- 32:10W-H-I-M where we have your country music and much more.
- 32:14Including America's most famous and most unique radio news commentator, Paul Harvey.
- 32:19Mornings 8.30. Midday 12.30. Afternoon 3.05. W-H-I-M Providence.
- 32:25And we've just been informed that Buffalo has narrowed the gap up against Miami. We're playing in Buffalo.
- 32:31It's now 22 to 17. All right here are the official first half sets.
- 32:36We'll reach out the first half for you. The pitch is 14 first downs.
- 32:39The oiler is 6. Total yards 231 for the Patriots 98 for the Oilers.
- 32:46Rushing 45 yards for the Oilers. 123 for the Patriots.
- 32:51You saw the ball control. Really the story in the first half. And a good field position.
- 32:55The turnovers early in the first half. With Houston fumbling the Patriots.
- 33:00Recovering. They kept the Oiler offense off the field for a greater portion of the first quarter and into the second quarter.
- 33:06And I think that this really was a story. As the Patriots then were able to have their offense develop the good rhythm
- 33:12that they needed to have such an awesome running attack against their strong Oiler defense.
- 33:17And this is exactly what they have done. The Oilers I'm sure are just repeating and regrouping at half time down 23 to 7.
- 33:25I have been impressed with Dan Pascherini. His play action taking. His ball handling and his pass and 10 goals dropping three of the passes.
- 33:32Pascherini was 3 for 9 in the first half. Not that impressive.
- 33:36But take away those two drops that could have been reset. Things that could have been different.
- 33:40So I look for Houston to come out throwing that ball in the second half show.
- 33:43I think you know the most impressive statistic of the first half to me is that the Patriots had 100 Makiites rushing in the first half.
- 33:50The Oilers defensively are one of the best teams in the league in stopping the Rucks.
- 33:55So the Patriots ran into the Oilers strength and were able to do a pretty good job on them.
- 34:00I think also we have to consider the field position with their side of their series and that helped their running game considerably.
- 34:06He said to kick it off. Deep 4 Houston. Dirden to the near side and full to the far side. Posey kicking off from left to right with a wind at his back for the third quarter.
- 34:15And it's a high twisting kick coming down to Dirden at the 9. He drops it, picks it up, heads to the right at the 15.
- 34:22Trying to cut up the middle of the 20 and is hit at about the 23 yard line.
- 34:26Covered by rookie Mike Hawkins along with number 83. Getting up off the pile. Don Westbrook.
- 34:33Westbrook has been doing an excellent job on the special teams for the Patriots.
- 34:37I'd like to point that out. Don, reserve receiver has been doing a good job for them.
- 34:43Patriots special teams today appear to be playing better than they have in some time.
- 34:47While they're picking it up as the year goes on, the rest of the team playing well, it usually falls right in hand.
- 34:52All three areas and segments of the team start to develop and play well.
- 34:56Carpenter the full back and Campbell the tail back. Back to throw is a Pasterrini on first down.
- 35:01He fires to the near side of his cock by Ken Burrow.
- 35:03Off and out of bounds at about the Patriot 39 yard line.
- 35:07A fast completion on the out the deep out to Ken Burrow for a first down for Houston.
- 35:12Oh, obviously the orders in the second half or at least off of that first play will be doing something that I thought they'd be doing coming into the game.
- 35:21And that is throwing on first down to try to mix up the Patriots defensively.
- 35:26Lunsford, Hamilton and Bishop the front line. It is first in 10 Houston at their own 39.
- 35:32On the right wing is Caster. Wide left is Paul. The give comes to Campbell sweeping wide to the right.
- 35:38He is hit as he gets to the 40-41 yard line. Chasing it down from the back side to make the tackle for the Patriot was Ray Hamilton.
- 35:45Excellent play. Lunsford had him up front and Hamilton came in from the back side to bring Campbell down by the shoot-tops.
- 35:51It is a gain of two yards to the 41 yard line second down and eight yards to go Houston at their own 41 yard line.
- 36:00An official timeout has been taken here. Prentice McCray is hobbling off the field and Dick Connors can replace him at strong safety.
- 36:08McCray has had a knee problem and Doug Bedoin who has been playing strong safety has a hip problem.
- 36:14Injured his hip in the first half last week at Buffalo and he really is not in good enough shape to play until Dick Connors is playing at strong safety.
- 36:22Alright, the Oilers come out. Caster in the left slot and Burrow wide to the left.
- 36:27Tight to the right is the tight end barber and eye formation behind Pasterrini on second down and eight.
- 36:32The first man through, Carpenter gets the call and he is planted at the line of scrimmage.
- 36:37He was trying to spin to the outside but McGee, Schoen and Haynes were all in on the stop when they really leveled him.
- 36:44At the 42 yard line it is a gain of a yard, third down and seventh.
- 36:49Carpenter's second year running back from Miami of Ohio, 6-1, 2-14. He is a good runner, not a great runner but a good runner.
- 36:55Does a lot of things well. Now Campbell is out and the Oilers come in with the three wide receivers.
- 37:00Caster wide to the right, into the left slot is Renfrow, wide of left is Burrow.
- 37:06Loan setback Carpenter. They're down in 7 Houston at their own 42.
- 37:10Back to throw is Pasterrini. Sets it up. Fires over the middle. It is intercepted by Nelson at the 50.
- 37:16That's a 45. That's a 40 as Houston and drag out of bounds at the Oilers 37 yard line.
- 37:22Gene Nelson, 6 off his fifth pass of the season.
- 37:27In the right spot at the right time Nelson played it, read it like an open book.
- 37:31He had Mike Renfrow breaking across the middle, Pasterrini looking at him right away.
- 37:36He did not see Steve Nelson coming from the other side as he cut right in front once again,
- 37:41making an interception that we've seen him duplicate many, many times this year.
- 37:45Not many times but two or three times anyway at the interceptions that he does have.
- 37:49And he has those hands all padded up, outstanding hands going up reaching and making those interceptions.
- 37:54First and 10 Patriots at the Oilers 37.
- 37:57Grogan has Morgan to the left and Jackson to the right. Long count by Grogan.
- 38:01The give is on a draw to Andy Johnson cutting inside the 35 of the 33 yard line.
- 38:06Gene on the play of four yards, second down and six, making the tackle with Greg Bingham for the Houston Oilers.
- 38:12Sixth year player from Purdue, he's a big guy. Not overly tall but he's broad. 6-1, 2-40.
- 38:19And now Horace Ivory comes in and Andy Johnson goes out.
- 38:23The Patriots on second down and six at the Oilers 33. This set up on a pass at the interception by Nelson at the Patriot 45
- 38:30and he ran it back to the Oilers 37.
- 38:32Grogan on second down. It is Ivory to the right side turning the corner at the 30 at the 25,
- 38:37spinning, twisting on his feet down to the Oilers 24 yard line.
- 38:41Criss down, Horace Ivory.
- 38:44Grogan faked a bootleg that way and pulled some of the defenders of Houston over that way,
- 38:49and gave Horace Ivory more room on this right side because he did not get to pursuit with that great speed
- 38:56once he turns the corner, can pick up the yardage.
- 38:59Horace Ivory is one of the most genuinely humble people I've ever met in my life. He really, really is.
- 39:06Very, very humble guy.
- 39:08First down Patriots at the Oilers 24.
- 39:12Morgan to the left, Jackson to the right, Cunningham and Johnson in the backfield.
- 39:16Grogan on a gift to Cunningham turning it wide to the left, turning the corner at the 20,
- 39:20running down the sideline and out of bounds.
- 39:22Inside the 20 yard line, they will spot it down around the 17 yard line.
- 39:30Stemwick chased him out on the far side, but it's a 7 yard gain for Cunningham.
- 39:35They get second down and three for the Patriots.
- 39:39Cunningham now with 76 yards rushing in the game.
- 39:42Stanley Morgan with a great cutback block on Mike Rinefeld, the safety man who was coming over there.
- 39:48Stanley on the left sideline came back over the middle and just cut him right down.
- 39:53Carlos Pennywell is in, wide to the left, Jackson wide to the right.
- 39:57Francis tight to the right side, getting colder here at Shaper.
- 40:00Second down and three Patriots.
- 40:02It is Cunningham up the middle, smacking inside the 15, down to about the 13 yard line on an up for a Patriot.
- 40:08First down, Robert Brazil takes the tackle for the orders, but Cunningham has a first down at the Houston order 13 yard line.
- 40:17Cunningham inching closer to the 100 yard mark. He has not done it yet this season, but his last couple of games have just been outstanding.
- 40:24Now the Patriots have them all down at the order 13 yard line and one of the orders is shaking up on the players coming out.
- 40:30That's Curly Culp.
- 40:32Here's the favoring his left shoulder.
- 40:35Culp's replacement at the nose tackle for the orders is Ken Canard and he's into the ball again.
- 40:43Now the Patriots have been running successfully up the middle to show you the job that Len Kytus has been doing on Culp.
- 40:48They have been getting big yardage up the middle.
- 40:50Let's see if they will try to take advantage of Canard now.
- 40:53First and 10 at the order 13.
- 40:55Rogan calling signal. Rogan to give to Cunningham, breaks it to the left, inside, down to about the 10 yard line and again around three.
- 41:02He is ripped down there at the 10 yard line by Kiner and Bingham of Houston.
- 41:09They spot the ball to the 10 yard line. It's again up three, second down and seven for the Patriots at the order 10.
- 41:15Three yards for Cunningham now gives him 83.
- 41:2083 yards rushing for Sam Cunningham and 15 carries.
- 41:24Ball at the order 10 yard line with second and seven. The Patriots leading 23 to seven.
- 41:29This game being broadcast around the world. The American forces radio to over 300 stations.
- 41:34Slot left formation. Rogan on a give. Two Johnson to the right.
- 41:38Inside the 10 he goes down to about the 8 yard line.
- 41:41This threading is way through.
- 41:43Kiner again on the tackle for the Oilers along with Brazil and Canard.
- 41:49They'll spot the ball down about the Houston 8 yard line where it will be third down and five for the Patriots at the order 8.
- 41:56Third and five.
- 41:58And now Morgan comes in and Pennywell comes out.
- 42:02Patriots have not thrown to Francis very much today.
- 42:06This is the kind of situation where Francis could be a target.
- 42:09Wide left is Jackson and the left slot goes Morgan.
- 42:12Cunningham the full back offset left half is Ivory.
- 42:14Francis tight to the right. Rogan bootlegging to the right side.
- 42:18Going to keep it and go.
- 42:19Driving down but stopped at about the 7 yard line. He gained only about a yard.
- 42:24Washington was there for the Houston Oilers.
- 42:27Along with Mike Lenfell.
- 42:29Now they tried to run the option play with of course Ivory coming to the same side.
- 42:33He had no chance to make the pitch. Houston strung it out beautifully.
- 42:37And forced Rogan to carry it up inside and yet they were there to stop him.
- 42:41The gain was to the 7 yard line at his fourth down on the field goal attempt.
- 42:45Will come from around the 15 yard line.
- 42:48The about a 25 yard kick attempt for David Posey.
- 42:53Dick Conn. Nealing down at the 15 yard line.
- 42:5825 yard field goal attempt for Posey. 9.50 to go. Third quarter.
- 43:02There's the snap. The ball is down. Posey hits it up and hits the upright.
- 43:06No good. It hits the upright and dropped off to the side.
- 43:09So the field goal attempt by Posey is no good.
- 43:12And the Patriots 23 to 7.
- 43:15With a score of the Patriots 23 to 7, let's take a timeout.
- 43:37Something extra. It's in bank super 7 reward. You'll earn super high interest plus one of more than 40 expensive gifts with this new savings account at in bank.
- 43:46Gives like a new car. Both being code and more. In bank super 7 reward. It's a valuable gift and super interest.
- 43:53Now that's something extra.
- 43:55Something extra. Something extra. Something extra. Something extra. Something extra.
- 44:11Remember FDIC.
- 44:20So the 25 yard field goal attempt by Dave Posey. No good. Hitting the upright and bouncing off.
- 44:25And the Patriots lead remains the same. 16 points. 23 to 7. The order is now taking over first and 10 at their own 20 yard line.
- 44:35We have 9 minutes 43 seconds to go in the third quarter.
- 44:38Under our contract arrangement where the Patriots for this broadcast.
- 44:41The announcers for this game have been selected by station WBZ. Subject to the approval of the Patriots football team.
- 44:45However WBZ radio retains the final line of selection of the announcers. The others first and 10 at their own 20.
- 44:52One loan setback double tight ends wide receivers to both side. It is the pass to the left side to follow.
- 44:57It is incomplete. A wide receiver screen to Ken Morrill on the near side right through his hand.
- 45:03That's the third ball he's dropped today. He's having a tough day feeling that ball.
- 45:08Patriots in the last two drives now have come up without a score goal and that's just giving Houston that little breath that they need.
- 45:17The last two times they've driven down into Houston territory. Tried two field goal attempts and came up short.
- 45:23So 23 to 7. And Houston still trying to get back in.
- 45:28Red for a wide to the right. Back to throw past Arrini. Sets it up. Flares it out to the right to Campbell at the 20.
- 45:33Campbell at the 25. Hit and knocked down at about the 34 yard line. Ray Hamilton pursuing in on the tackle with a sable for the Patriots.
- 45:42And Rod Schott. But it's the first down for the Oilers on the screen pass to Earl Campbell.
- 45:47The Patriots scored on their first five possessions with three field goals and two touchdowns.
- 45:52The last two trips down the field have ended up on missed field goal.
- 45:57The Oilers first and ten. Ball at their own 34. Mike Renfrow son of Ray Renfrow played for the Cleveland Browns a long time ago is wide to the right.
- 46:06Borrow wide to the left. Two tight ends. One setback. And that's Campbell. Campbell gets the call. It's the right side and it's stopped as he gets to the 35 yard line and a gain of a yard.
- 46:17Patriots just clogging the alleys for Campbell beautifully. Richard Bishop was there with Raymond Hamilton for the Patriots.
- 46:25It's going to be second down and nine yards to go for Houston at their own 35. Tony McGee in. Mel Lunsford out of the defensive line.
- 46:34Schott and Sable the outside linebackers. Nelson and Hunt the inside linebackers. Conn remains at strong safety.
- 46:42Now the Patriots put 11 men on the line of scrimmage on second down and eight at the 35 yard line.
- 46:47Now they drop off some people. Pastorini after checking off. He goes back to throw. Sets it up. Fires near side and it is caught by Caster at the 40.
- 46:56Out to the 43 and then stopped by Rod Schott of the Patriots along with the Stam Hunt both wrapping up Richard Caster.
- 47:06It's again however to the 42 yard line of their abouts. Betting on the placement of the ball they'll be shy of a first down still.
- 47:14Third down and about two for Houston. At the 42 yard line. Well the Patriot defense got the job done when they faked that blitz.
- 47:22They forced Pastorini and the Oilers to check off to a blitz pattern and then they jump back into their normal position.
- 47:29Caster coming out from the left tight end slot just came on a quick look out. Pastorini got it to him. He was wide open when he caught it
- 47:36but the good pursuit of the Patriots prevented him from getting a first down.
- 47:39Double tight ends for Houston. Caster on the right wing. It is third down and a long yard for the Oilers at their own 42.
- 47:46They give us the Campbell to the right side. He breaks it for a first down and hurtles out the midfield before Sam Hunt drags him down.
- 47:53But Campbell hit that right side in a hurry and got it out close to midfield and they spot it down at the 50 yard line for first down for the Houston Oilers
- 48:01and they keep their drive alive with 7-0-3 to go here in the third quarter.
- 48:05Notice one thing in this game, very few penalties have been called. Right. I haven't seen that flag one too many times. One penalty was called.
- 48:13No, we had two off sides. One was declined. Both defensive off sides which is somewhat rare.
- 48:20Oilers come out sending Barber wide to the left. Caster in the right slot. Wide to the right is Burrell.
- 48:27It's a give to Campbell on the draw and he is nailed at midfield.
- 48:33Ray Hamilton making the first hit and then let everybody else come in to support.
- 48:37Hamilton got help from Haynes, Lunsford and Hunt. Hamilton has had an outstanding game for the Patriots.
- 48:47The Patriot defense goaler has really done the job and so far that is the key.
- 48:51Not allowing Houston to run the ball, forcing them to throw. Houston knows they can throw but they have to try to run the ball.
- 48:57Second down to nine for the Oilers at the Patriot 49 yard line. I formation behind Pasterini. Pasterini play action fake.
- 49:04Back to throw. Let's it go long and deep and over-thrown. Intended for either Caster or Barber. They were both in the vicinity but a hard rush.
- 49:13That time by the Patriots and they hit Pasterini just as he got the ball away and certainly changed the trajectory of the pass.
- 49:22Third down to nine for the Oilers at the Patriot 49 yard line. 5-55.
- 49:28Left to play in the third quarter. The Patriots lead 23-7. Next Sunday we're at Shea Stadium in New York to meet the New York Jets.
- 49:3612-45 every time on the Patriots football network. Wide left is double O, Ken Barrow left slot is Ren Bro, wide to the right, Caster.
- 49:43Carpenter the loan set back. Barber tight to the right and motion to the right goes Ren Bro, Pasterini drops straight back to throw.
- 49:49Set it up. Here's the rush. It's the screen. It is complete. The Carpenter at 45. Hit it to 50 and stops at the 49.
- 49:55Outstanding defense. And again it was Ray Hamilton. Super precipile Hamilton as he was right there waiting for the screen to develop.
- 50:03Again Hamilton a big play and he has had a big, big game for the Patriots. Fourth down the Oilers of force to punt.
- 50:09Big hand for the defense and they deserve it. Cliff Parsley back into the ballgame for Houston to punt.
- 50:15He has kicked twice so far today. His first punt was very poor. Second punt he hit pretty good.
- 50:24That's the one that Morgan fumbled and led to the Houston touchdown. Deep for the Patriots' hands at the 15 and Cliff Parsley stands at his 35.
- 50:33Do kick it away for the Oilers. Good snap right on the money and whistle the call. The Oilers were going to be called for delay of the game.
- 50:40They used up their lot at 30 seconds and so the ball will go back to the Houston 46 yard line.
- 50:47That means Haines will step up to about the 20 yard line or so to await Parsley's punt.
- 50:53Parsley now stands at his 31 yard line and Lawrence of Arricano waiting to punt.
- 50:59Don't garnish things too much. Parsley waiting. Arms swinging.
- 51:07They're taking a long time to get the ball back. Now they do. It's on the money to Parsley and he runs out a beautiful high booming punt.
- 51:15Fair catch signal for by Haines. It hits at the five and goes into the end zone. Automatic touch back. Flags are down. Flags are down.
- 51:23And let's see what the penalty is. Not at the line of scrimmage either. It was downfield.
- 51:31And the Patriots seem to be disagreeing with the call of the official.
- 51:38Now let's see what the penalty is. Talking things over with Tim Fox. And we've had no indication yet.
- 51:50Well the Oilers offense is back out on the field. Well if it's a personal foul penalty or something it would give the Oilers a first down.
- 51:57That's what it's going to be. The flag is down about the 36 yard line.
- 52:02As we await the word from the officials on what the penalty is.
- 52:07Only other score change that we have until at this point Minnesota after spotting Chicago 7 points has gone out on top of them 14 of 7 in the second period.
- 52:16Now they're coming over to explain the penalty to Chuck Fairbanks as he wants to find out what's going on.
- 52:23Patriots defensive team. Now part of the defensive team. Part of the kick return team.
- 52:28Illegal cut number 45 on the defense. First down.
- 52:32An illegal cut against the Patriots. First down Houston. So the Oilers retain possession of the ball. First and 10.
- 52:41At the Patriot 49 yard line.
- 52:47He said 45. He must have meant 48 Timmy Fox I believe. All right the Oilers. Now the Patriots take a timeout.
- 52:58The Patriots have called a timeout. All right let's take a timeout with a score. The Patriots 23 the Oilers 7.
- 53:06Just as there's lots of excitement in New England Patriots football there's excitement and a regency scandal.
- 53:12You see more people are listening to the real drama of police, fire, emergency calls and more on a regency action radio.
- 53:19You'll hear the news while it's happening and from where it's happening. These busy little monitor radio scanners constantly search for an active signal automatically.
- 53:28Stop to hear a message being transmitted then search for a reply or another message.
- 53:32No fiddling with dials and you don't need any technical knowledge to operate regency action radio scanners.
- 53:38If you want to get the inside story get a regency scanner. Then you'll really know what goes on in your town.
- 53:44There's a wide choice of models from 84, 95 and up to the new no crystal units plus a special factory rebate.
- 53:52Regency. When it comes to scanners they lead the league.
- 53:56See you nearby Regency dealer and in Hope Allstories, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
- 54:00Say right one socket East Providence and Warwick and Tony Goodrich television city Cranston.
- 54:04Well the penalty against the Patriots you know for the illegal cut on the punt return giving the Oilers an automatic push down.
- 54:12And this keeps Houston very much in the ballgame because if they score on this possession,
- 54:16now you've got a 23 to 14 ballgame as you head into the final quarter and just about anything could happen past Serene can really throw the ball.
- 54:24And the Oilers are a dangerous team. Patriots have had things all their own way thus far.
- 54:29Why do the righters ren for to the left is borough. Double tight ends for Houston. Carpenter the loan setback.
- 54:36First and ten at the Patriot 49. Pastor any barking signals that give us to know when it is the end around the caster.
- 54:42Turning it wide to the right at the 47 and he's brought down Steve Zabel.
- 54:46Zabel stayed his ground. Stated home waited. Made the tackle on caster along with Steve Nelson.
- 54:53It is a game of one yard on the end around to caster.
- 55:00Slow and developing and I think that's what enabled the Patriot defense to get over there.
- 55:04Although Zabel held his ground he needed help. Steve Nelson lined up over the middle was able to get over there.
- 55:10But the good pursuit and the slow developing reverse made it unsuccessful.
- 55:14Second down to nine for Houston at the Patriot 49. Pastor any the quick pitch to Carpenter turning wide to the left.
- 55:19He looks to throw the ball. He doesn't. He carries down to the 45 and is ripped out of bounds.
- 55:23On the near side by Richard Bishop.
- 55:25We brought him down along with Steve Nelson. Nelson's having a great year.
- 55:30If he doesn't make the Pro Bowl this year there should be an investigation.
- 55:34Just having an outstanding year.
- 55:36Ball spotted down to the Patriot 45 yard line where it is third down for the Oilers and six yards to go.
- 55:43Third and sixth for Houston at the Patriot 45.
- 55:47Now McCray is back in as an extra defensive back.
- 55:51Hunt comes out and Lunsford goes in.
- 55:55And Nelson comes out.
- 55:58Third down six for Houston at the Patriot 45. Slot right formation run throw.
- 56:03Pastor any goes straight back to throw.
- 56:06Sets it up. Fires over the middle. It is complete to Carpenter at the 40 35 and down to the Patriot 33.
- 56:11Goes Rob Carpenter. Good all around back. Brought down by Michael Haynes and Steve Zabel.
- 56:17But it's the first down for the Oilers to the Patriot 33 and so Houston is marching to the Patriot 33 yard line
- 56:23with 351 to go in the third quarter and the Patriots leading 23 to 7.
- 56:27That was the half time score.
- 56:30And one of the many big third down plays that you see.
- 56:33That one coming in favor of Houston. They had to keep this drive alive in order to get back in there.
- 56:39Slot right formation for the Oilers. Barber wide to the left.
- 56:42Renfro in the right slot. No tight end in there.
- 56:44Pastor any play action back to throw.
- 56:46Ships it. It is caught by Barber down to the 15 yard line.
- 56:50First down for Houston to the tight end Mike Barber.
- 56:54Pastor any is really pulling the trigger on that rifle.
- 56:57It is got a blitz from Steve Zabel on the weak side that time left one man open and you had a one on one situation over the middle.
- 57:06Now the importance of running for Houston is that they like to do a lot of play faking a lot of play action and run their passing that way.
- 57:13So if your running game is not going it doesn't help that play action pass that much.
- 57:17That's why they try desperately to run in this game.
- 57:20First in 10 Houston at the 15 yard line.
- 57:22Pastor any checking off at the line of scrimmage.
- 57:24Pastor any on the gift to Campbell the right.
- 57:26He finds the Holies inside the 10 and down to the six yard line.
- 57:31He is very quick and very powerful.
- 57:33You know that he's got great power but the quickness is there.
- 57:36Now right there good block by Fisher number 60 providing a little bit of a whole Zabel is going to have to come and just hold on and help and hope for some help from some of his friends.
- 57:45When Bob Phillips said coach of Houston was asked doesn't Campbell get up slow.
- 57:50He says yes but he also goes down slow.
- 57:53You won't go down at all unless you really get a hold of him.
- 57:56Second down in a couple.
- 57:58They get hold of him here.
- 57:59It'll be shy of the first down.
- 58:02Bob showed who recovered a fumble in the first hand for the Patriots is there for New England.
- 58:08So be third down and around a yard to go for a first down.
- 58:17Steve Zabel comes out and Steve King replaces him for the defense of the New England Patriots.
- 58:28Third down and one.
- 58:30Houston needs a touchdown.
- 58:31They got to have a touchdown.
- 58:32They've got two down to run it if they choose to do that.
- 58:35I don't believe they're not going to go for three points.
- 58:37Just outside the five yard line.
- 58:48Straight shot Campbell first down.
- 58:50He flew in there didn't he?
- 58:52He gets a quick start.
- 58:54Oh he flew in there.
- 58:56A lot of people go up over the top.
- 59:01You can see right here straight shot to hit the man in motion but straight ahead.
- 59:05And he is low to the ground when he gets a hold of that football and goes into the line.
- 59:09A lot of backs will jump over top but I don't know where you're going to go.
- 59:13You've got to sub marine to make sure that you get underneath him.
- 59:16This is the 17th play of this drive.
- 59:24Campbell.
- 59:27He has stopped short.
- 59:30Raymond Hamilton at the bottom of the stack.
- 59:37This drive started back at the Houston 20 yard line.
- 59:4147 seconds now counting down.
- 59:4543 seconds win the third quarter.
- 59:47They ought to get moving because they score a touchdown.
- 59:49They want the win to their back when they kick off.
- 59:54But I'm sure they're thinking first things first.
- 1:00:03Diving touchdown Houston.
- 1:00:05Rob Carpenter his second touchdown of the afternoon.
- 1:00:09His fifth on the year and is now a 23 to 13 ball game.
- 1:00:14The Oilers are right back in.
- 1:00:16I said that Earl Campbell goes underneath while they get the other kind right here up over top.
- 1:00:21Rob Carpenter and gets into the end zone with still 23 seconds remaining on the clock.
- 1:00:27So when they kick off they're going to have the win to their back.
- 1:00:30And they had a reprieve on the kick.
- 1:00:32Fintaly against the Patriots costing them in the end.
- 1:00:36The bottom line six points maybe seven.
- 1:00:40Tony Fritz with the extra point attempt.
- 1:00:44It is good.
- 1:00:46It is now New England 23 Houston 14 23 seconds left to go.
- 1:00:54Third quarter.
- 1:00:58Your Christmas limousine or a mountain car award.
- 1:01:02A battle with the competition that's going to make you the winner.
- 1:01:05By zapping the competition with year end values on the greatest lineup of cars we've ever offered.
- 1:01:11Like the new Chrysler LeBaron the car that adds a little life to your style with every model.
- 1:01:17A sporty coupe that's got the competition running scared with options like soft leather seating and a T-bar roof.
- 1:01:24LeBaron's the van where prestige rests on great value.
- 1:01:28Not a $12,000 price tag.
- 1:01:30And the new size town and country wagon.
- 1:01:33The comfort of Chrysler the work habit of a wagon.
- 1:01:36Yes in the battle for your car dollar at clean up time.
- 1:01:41Nobody's got a lineup of winners like your Chrysler Pima dealer.
- 1:01:44Who'll make you a winner too during car war.
- 1:02:00Tony Fritz to kick it off for the Houston dollars and you know they've come back strong here in this ball game.
- 1:02:05And I've got a feeling that the fourth quarter is going to be a rip snort.
- 1:02:09Well the two drives we talked about the Patriots coming up short without any scores just kept Houston alive.
- 1:02:16A little longer they took advantage with that big penalty.
- 1:02:18It drove 80 yards for a second touchdown in their ball game.
- 1:02:21I'd fetch to kick it off into the win.
- 1:02:23Deep for the Patriots is Claybourne.
- 1:02:25He's up around the 17 yard line.
- 1:02:27Figuring on some help from the win.
- 1:02:30Fritz moves into the ball and he hits it end over end.
- 1:02:33Claybourne will field it at the 15 he drops it he picks it up back at the 10.
- 1:02:37Now he's heading up field at the 15 heading left at the 20 and slips across to about the 25 or 26 yard line.
- 1:02:43Where the Patriots offense will go to work first and 10 at their own 26.
- 1:02:47Let's pause 15 seconds.
- 1:02:48This is the BZ Patriots football network 11 10 W H I M with the best country music and much more.
- 1:02:55Including Howard Cosell's daily sports commentary mornings at 8 45 here on the country giant 11 10 W H I M.
- 1:03:02Providence.
- 1:03:04Marked at the 24 yard line.
- 1:03:06The officials saying that Claybourne's knee touchdown at the 24.
- 1:03:11So the Patriots are first and 10 at their own 24 yard line.
- 1:03:14Jackson wide to the right Morgan to the left Cunningham the fullback Johnson on the left wing.
- 1:03:18Rogan on first down calling signals to give us to know when Groganon play action fake back to throw.
- 1:03:23Shoots it long and deep for Harold Jackson and it is intercepted at the 28 yard line on a great defensive play by Willie Alexander.
- 1:03:31Cutting right in front of Jackson and making the interceptions the Patriots tried to go deep to Jackson and the bomb and the
- 1:03:38orders get the interception at their own 28 yard line.
- 1:03:41Willie Alexander's fifth pass interception of the season and now the Oilers have the ball with four seconds to go in the third quarter.
- 1:03:49The Patriots lead by 23 to 14 but the Oilers with a definite opportunity in the momentum.
- 1:03:54Gina in this game has swung toward the Oilers after that first half.
- 1:03:58Well I gotta agree with you Houston has got themselves something going here offensively.
- 1:04:03They've been trying to run.
- 1:04:04They are just getting a little more out of their running game and that has been helping their passing game.
- 1:04:08But now another turnover in the offense once again with the ability to develop better rhythm.
- 1:04:14Basterini has them set first and 10 at the Houston 28.
- 1:04:17Carpenter the fullback Campbell offset left half.
- 1:04:19Basterini on the gift of carpenter right up the chute and he bangs it out to the 33 yard line and again about five yards of the play.
- 1:04:26That's the end of the third quarter.
- 1:04:28The score after three quarters at Shaper Stadium in Foxborough the Patriots 23 in the orders 14.

- 1:04:52A minute and 13 seconds to go in the first quarter David Fossey a 34 yard field goal six nothing Patriots.
- 1:04:581455 in the second quarter five seconds into the second quarter for a five yard run 13 nothing Patriots.
- 1:05:06Later on in the second quarter with a 26 to play.
- 1:05:08Fossey hit a 37 yard field goal to make it 16 nothing Patriots.
- 1:05:12Then with 324 to go in the quarter Steve Gruggen bootlegging in from seven yards out and the Patriots were on top 23 to nothing.
- 1:05:20The others then recovered a fumbled punt by Stanley Morgan at the Patriots 35 yard line and they drilled it in the score.
- 1:05:27Rob Coppenter for eight yards out 23 to seven.
- 1:05:30Fossey missing a 38 yard field goal in the final play of the first half and that's the way it stands at half time.
- 1:05:36The Patriots leading by 16 points a strong all around two way performance for the Patriots offensively and defensively as they shoot for their eighth win in a row.
- 1:05:44The Patriots on top 23 seven at the half.
- 1:05:47The Dolphins are leading Buffalo 23 14 in their game up in Buffalo.
- 1:05:52Meanwhile it is half time here at Shaper Stadium in Foxborough with a score the New England Patriots 23 and the Houston Orders seven.

- 1:08:29Okay we're going to take some phone calls now and see what you have to say about the first half action.
- 1:08:34Go ahead, you're on the air. Hello.
- 1:08:36Hello, Gino. Hi, how are you?
- 1:08:37Pretty good. You're on the air.
- 1:08:39I'm going to ask you one question.
- 1:08:41Go ahead.
- 1:08:42What is the percentage of plays that are called by Fairbanks in a game?
- 1:08:49The percentage of plays that are actually not called by Fairbanks. It's like a conference amongst the coaches.
- 1:08:56They had two coaches up in the press box who are sending the plays down and they're sending them two chucks.
- 1:09:01Of course they talked to him about them and Ron Earhart and Ray Berry calling them from up here.
- 1:09:08So then they send them in.
- 1:09:10But I would say that a great portion of them are sent in and Steve Grogan has the option to check it off
- 1:09:16once he gets up the line of the scrimmage or call a play date. He would rather call in the huddle.
- 1:09:21Of course it's something that is understood amongst them. But I would say that a greater portion is called by the coaches.
- 1:09:26Yeah, have you heard anything about the development of Steve Kiner? Are we playing for Houston or I'm back in position?
- 1:09:31Well, he's held down that regular linebacker position for the Houston Oilers ever since he left the Patriots.
- 1:09:36So, you know, he's been there a long time and he's obviously doing a job.
- 1:09:41We've got to go ahead.
- 1:09:43Okay, and also Sam's having a my car just released and I told you I probably might be off through but I don't think he'll be doing much better.
- 1:09:50No, as good as he can.
- 1:09:52Well, Sam was a little disappointed in what he has been doing earlier in the campaign.
- 1:09:57Like Gil has said, he fought off some shoulder and knee injuries early and he wanted to carry the ball more and he felt like he could be doing more
- 1:10:05for the team running the ball and he just needed a little vote of confidence.
- 1:10:08He got it from the coaching staff that gave him the ball and he's been doing the rest. He's just been outstanding in the last eight area.
- 1:10:15Coach 617 if you're calling from out of town. Go ahead. Let's take another call. You're on here.
- 1:10:20You were on here. Hello.
- 1:10:24Okay, I guess we lost that caller for a moment, but perhaps we'll get it back again.
- 1:10:30All right, is he there now? No, not yet.
- 1:10:32Okay, well, let's look at some of the first half stats as soon as we get this cleared up, we'll take some more calls.
- 1:10:37Pastoreini is 3-9, 44 yards. Grogan, 8-12, 124 yards.
- 1:10:43And the total offense, this is the story of the Patriots, 8-8 by Great Steel,
- 1:10:47position 224 yards total offense and the others 93.
- 1:10:51Okay, we got another phone call. Go ahead. You're on here.
- 1:10:54Hello. Hello, Gino. Hi.
- 1:10:57Andy Johnson, 4K for 12 yards.
- 1:11:01Grogan himself is carried 4 yards. 4 times for 21 yards.
- 1:11:05Earl Campbell, the other side is carried 10 times 31 yards and he has come into this game with some
- 1:11:12terrific running back and football player and the Patriots have done well to contain this guy up to half time.
- 1:11:19So that's really the story of the stats. Let's go back to some phone calls. Go ahead. Hello.
- 1:11:24Oh, Gino. Hi, how are you? First time caller. Okay.
- 1:11:27This is Dan from Arlington. I'm a seasoned ticket holder. I'm a little under the weather today.
- 1:11:31I'm a little under the point of information. If the Patriots go to the Super Bowl, do we as
- 1:11:36season ticket holders get preference? Do we get any preference in price getting the amount of tickets?
- 1:11:42If you're a season ticket holder yet, every season ticket holder will be allowed
- 1:11:46so many per ticket that they have as a season ticket. You know what I mean.
- 1:11:51If you have 10 tickets, you're going to be allowed so many to purchase as a Super Bowl.
- 1:11:56Does the Patriots send us any information on that? Well, they haven't gone to that point yet.
- 1:12:01It's a little premature at this time. Well, I don't think so. You guys keep doing a good job.
- 1:12:06Well, we're not doing it. I tell you that. You guys really play with the team.
- 1:12:10They're playing outstanding football and they're taking advantage of opportunities that are given to them
- 1:12:15and that is what a good team will do and they're doing it and they did it today.
- 1:12:19Now, mind you, Houston is a team to be reckoned with and I'm sitting here and we got a nice comfortable
- 1:12:2523 to 7 lead at this point, but I think they're still in the ballgame.
- 1:12:29Houston Oilers can move that football and if they get any opportunities, it could be a little closer than second half.
- 1:12:34I won't get them. Don't worry. Oh, I'm not worried, but I'm a little bit aware of the fact that they can do it.
- 1:12:40Okay? Thanks, you know. Alright, thank you. Alright, go ahead and take another call. Go ahead.
- 1:12:44Go on here. Hello?
- 1:12:49Yeah, you got your radio on sir.
- 1:12:56We're having a little difficulty once again. Alright, well, go ahead. You're on the air. Hello?
- 1:13:03Alright, half time here at Schaper Stadium. We're trying to get the phone calls and we've had a little difficulty as of late here
- 1:13:10and if we can get that cleared up, we'll take some more calls.
- 1:13:13At this point, once again, the Patriots leading the Oilers 23 to 7 at half time.
- 1:13:19Okay, the half time score is Patriots 23 to Oilers 7, stand by for the second half tick off.

- 1:15:49And also New Orleans on top of Atlanta in the first period. 3 to nothing.

- 1:16:02Including America's most famous and most unique radio news commentator, Paul Harvey.
- 1:16:07Mornings 8.30. Midday 12.30. Afternoon 3.05. W-H-I-M Providence.
- 1:16:13And we've just been informed that Buffalo is now the gap up against Miami. We're playing in Buffalo.
- 1:16:19It's now 22 to 17. All right here are the official first half sets. We'll reach out to first half 40.
- 1:16:26The Patriots 14 first downs. The Oilers 6th. Total yards 231 for the Patriots 98 for the Oilers.
- 1:16:34Racking 45 yards for the Oilers. 123 for the Patriots.
- 1:16:39You saw the ball control. Really the story in the first half. And a good field position to turn over as early in the first half.
- 1:16:46With Houston fumbling the Patriots recovering. They kept the Oiler offense off the field for a greater portion of the first quarter and into the second quarter.
- 1:16:54And I think that this really was a story. As the Patriots then were able to have their offense develop the good rhythm that they needed to have such an awesome running attack against a strong Oiler defense.
- 1:17:05And this is exactly what they have done. The Oilers. I'm sure just repeating and regrouping that half time down 23 to 7.
- 1:17:13I have been impressed with Dan Pacerini. His play action taking. His ball handling and his pass and Tim Bowles dropping three of the passes.
- 1:17:20Pacerini was 3-9 in the first half. Not that impressive. But Pacerini those two drops that could have been reset.
- 1:17:26And it could have been different. So I look for Houston to come out throwing that ball in the second half.
- 1:17:31I think you know the most impressive statistic of the first half to me is that the Patriots had 100 maybe yards rushing in the first half.
- 1:17:38The Oilers defensively are one of the best games in the league in stopping the Rucks.
- 1:17:43So the Patriots ran into the Oilers' strength and were able to do a pretty good job on them.
- 1:17:48I think also we have to consider the field position with their side of their series and that helped their running game considerably.
- 1:17:54Posey set to kick it off. Deep 4 Houston. Dirden to the near side and Fould to the far side. Posey kicking off from left to right with a wind at his back for the third quarter.
- 1:18:03And it's a high twisting kick coming down to Dirden at the 9. He drops it, picks it up, heads to the right at the 15.
- 1:18:10Trying to cut up the middle of the 20 and his hit at about the 23 yard line.
- 1:18:14Covered by rookie Mike Hawkins along with number 83. Getting up off the pile. Don Westbrook.
- 1:18:21Westbrook has been doing an excellent job on the special teams for the Patriots. I'd like to point that out.
- 1:18:27Don, reserve receiver has been doing a good job for them.
- 1:18:31Patriots special teams today appear to be playing better than they have in some time.
- 1:18:36They're picking it up as the year goes on. The rest of the team playing well. It usually falls right in hand.
- 1:18:41All three areas and segments of the team start to develop and play well.
- 1:18:44Carpenter the full back and Campbell the tail back. Back to throw is a Pasterrini on first down.
- 1:18:49He fires to the near side. It is caught by Ken Burrow.
- 1:18:51Off and out of bounds at about the Patriot 39 yard line.
- 1:18:55A fast completion on the out the deep out to Ken Burrow for a first down for Houston.
- 1:19:00Oh, obviously the orders in the second half or at least off of that first play will be doing something that I thought they'd be doing coming into the game.
- 1:19:09And that is throwing on first down to try to mix up the Patriots defensively.
- 1:19:14Lunsford Hamilton and Bishop the front line. It is first in 10 Houston at their own 39.
- 1:19:20On the right wing is Caster. Wide left is Paul. The give comes to Campbell sweeping wide to the right.
- 1:19:26He is hit as he gets to the 40-41 yard line.
- 1:19:29Chasing it down from the back side to make the tackle for the Patriots was Ray Hamilton.
- 1:19:34Excellent play. Lunsford had him up front and Hamilton came in from the back side to bring Campbell down by the shoot-tops.
- 1:19:40There's a gain of two yards to the 41 yard line second down and eight yards to go Houston at their own 41 yard line.
- 1:19:48An official timeout has been taken here.
- 1:19:51Prentice McCray is hobbling off the field and Dick Conn has come in to replace him at strong safety.
- 1:19:56McCray has had a knee problem.
- 1:19:58And Doug Bedouin, who has been playing strong safety, has a hip problem.
- 1:20:02Injured his hip in the first half last week at Buffalo and he really is not in good enough shape to play and so Dick Conn is playing at strong safety.
- 1:20:11All right, the Oilers come out. Caster in the left slot and Burl wide to the left.
- 1:20:15Tied to the right is the tight end barber.
- 1:20:17An eye formation behind Pasterrini on second down and eight.
- 1:20:20The first man through, Carpenter gets the call and he is planted at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:20:25He was trying to spin to the outside but McGee, Schoatt and Haynes were all in on the stop and they really leveled him.
- 1:20:33At the 42 yard line it is a gain of a yard, third down and seventh.
- 1:20:37Carpenter's second year running back from Miami of Ohio, 6-1, 2-14. He's a good runner, not a great runner but a good runner.
- 1:20:44Does a lot of things well.
- 1:20:45Now Campbell is out and the Oilers come in with the three wide receivers.
- 1:20:48Caster wide to the right, into the left slot is Renfrow, wide of left is Burl.
- 1:20:54Loan setback Carpenter. They're down in 7 Houston at their own 42.
- 1:20:58Back to throw is Pasterrini. Sets it up.
- 1:21:01Fires over the middle, it is intercepted by Nelson at the 50. That's a 45.
- 1:21:05That's a 40 as Houston and drag out of bounds at the Oilers 37 yard line.
- 1:21:10C. Nelson, 6 off his fifth pass of the season.
- 1:21:15In the right spot at the right time, Nelson planted, read it like an open book.
- 1:21:19Oh he had Mike Renfrow breaking across the middle, Pasterrini looking at him right away.
- 1:21:24He did not see, see Nelson coming from the other side as he cut right in front once again,
- 1:21:29making an interception that we've seen him duplicate many, many times this year.
- 1:21:33Not many times but two or three times anyway at the interceptions that he does have.
- 1:21:37And he has those hands all padded up, outstanding hands going up reaching and making those interceptions.
- 1:21:42First and 10 Patriots at the Oilers 37.
- 1:21:45Grogan has Morgan to the left and Jackson to the right. Long count by Grogan.
- 1:21:49The give is on a draw to Andy Johnson cutting inside the 35 of the 33 yard line.
- 1:21:54Gain on the play of four yards, second down and six, making the tackle with Greg Bingham for the Houston Oilers.
- 1:22:00Sixth year player from Purdue, he's a big guy. Not overly tall but he's broad, 6'1", 240.
- 1:22:07And now Horace Ivory comes in and Andy Johnson goes out.
- 1:22:11The Patriots on second down and six at the Oilers 33, this set up on a pass interception by Nelson at the Patriot 45
- 1:22:18and he ran it back to the Oilers 37.
- 1:22:20Grogan on second down, it is Ivory to the right side turning the corner at the 30 at the 25,
- 1:22:25spinning, twisting on his feet down to the Oilers 24 yard line.
- 1:22:29Grist down, Horace Ivory.
- 1:22:32Now Grogan faked the bootleg that way and pulled some of the defenders of Houston over that way, gave Horace Ivory more room on this right side
- 1:22:41because he did not get to pursuit with that great speed once he turns the corner, can pick up the yardage.
- 1:22:46Horace Ivory is one of the most genuinely humble people I've ever met in my life. He really, really is.
- 1:22:53Very, very humble guy.
- 1:22:56Grist down, Patriots at the Oilers 24, Morgan to the left, Jackson to the right, Cunningham and Johnson in the backfield.
- 1:23:04It is Grogan on a gift to Cunningham turning it wide to the left, turning the corner at the 20, running down the side line and out of bounds.
- 1:23:10Inside the 20 yard line, they will spot it down around the 17 yard line.
- 1:23:17Stemwick chased him out on the far side, but it's a 7 yard game for Cunningham. They get second down and three for the Patriots.
- 1:23:26Cunningham now with 76 yards rushing in the game.
- 1:23:29Reginald.
- 1:23:30Credit Stanley Morgan with a great cutback block on Mike Rinefeld, the safety man who was coming over there.
- 1:23:36Stanley on the left sideline came back over the middle and just cut him right down.
- 1:23:41Carlos Pennywell is in, wide to the left, Jackson wide to the right, Francis tight to the right side, getting colder here at Shaper.
- 1:23:48Second down and three Patriots. It is Cunningham up the middle, smacking inside the 15, down to about the 13 yard line and an up for a Patriot first down.
- 1:23:57Robert Brazile makes the tackle for the Oilers, but Cunningham has a first down at the Houston Oiler 13 yard line.
- 1:24:04Cunningham and Cunningham closer to the 100 yard mark. He has not done it yet this season, but his last couple of games have just been outstanding.
- 1:24:12Now the Patriots have them all down at the Oiler 13 yard line and one of the Oilers is shaking up on the players coming out. That's Curly Culp.
- 1:24:19Here's to be favoring his left shoulder. Culp's replacement at the nose tackle for the Oilers is Ken Canard and he's into the ball again.
- 1:24:31Now the Patriots have been running successfully up the middle to show you the job that Len Kytus has been doing on Culp.
- 1:24:36They have been getting big yardage up the middle. Let's see if they will try to take advantage of Canard now.
- 1:24:41First and 10 at the Oiler 13. Rogan calling signal. Rogan the gift at Cunningham. Breaks it to the left, inside, down to about the 10 yard line and again around three.
- 1:24:50He is ripped down there at the 10 yard line by Kiner and Bingham of Houston.
- 1:24:57They spot the ball to the 10 yard line and it's a gain of three, second down and seven for the Patriots at the Oiler 10.
- 1:25:04Three yards for Cunningham now gives him 83. 83 yards rushing for Sam Cunningham and 15 carries.
- 1:25:12Ball at the Oiler 10 yard line with second and seven. The Patriots lead 23 to seven.
- 1:25:17This game being broadcast around the world. The American forces radio to over 300 stations.
- 1:25:22Slot left formation. Rogan on a give. Two Johnson to the right. Inside the 10 he goes down to about the 8 yard line.
- 1:25:29This threading his way through. Kiner again on the tackle for the Oilers.
- 1:25:34Along with Brazil and Canard. They'll spot the ball down at about the Houston 8 yard line where it will be third down and five for the Patriots at the Oiler 8.
- 1:25:44Third and five. And now Morgan comes in and Pennywell comes out.
- 1:25:49Patriots have not thrown to Francis very much today. This is the kind of situation where Francis could be a target.
- 1:25:57Wide left is Jackson and the left slot goes Morgan. Cunningham the full back offset left half is Ivory.
- 1:26:03Francis tight to the right. Rogan bootlegging to the right side.
- 1:26:06Going to keep it and go. Driving down but stopped at about the 7 yard line. He gained only about a yard.
- 1:26:12Washington was there for the Houston Oilers along with Mike Redfell.
- 1:26:17Now they tried to run the option play with Horace Ivory coming to the same side.
- 1:26:21He had no chance to make the pitch. Houston strung it out beautifully and forced Rogan to carry it up inside and yet they were there to stop him.
- 1:26:29The gain was to the 7 yard line. It is fourth down and the field goal attempt will come from around the 15 yard line.
- 1:26:36It is about a 25 yard kick attempt for David Posey. Dick Connealing down at the 15 yard line. 25 yard field goal attempt for Posey.
- 1:26:489.50 to go. Third quarter. There is the snap. The ball is down. Posey hits it up and hits the upright.
- 1:26:55No good. It hits the upright and dropped off to the side.
- 1:26:58The field goal attempt by Posey is no good. And the Patriots lead the hands at 23 to 7.
- 1:27:04The Patriots 23 to the other 7. Let's take a time out.
- 1:27:07Music playing.
- 1:27:25Something extra. It's in bank super 7 reward. You'll earn super high interest plus one of more than 40 expensive gifts with this new savings account at in bank. Gives like a new car. Both being coded more.
- 1:27:37In bank super 7 reward. It's a valuable gift and super interest. Now that's something extra.
- 1:27:43Music playing.
- 1:28:03Number FDIC. So the 25 yard field goal attempt by Dave Posey. No good. Hitting the upright and bouncing off.
- 1:28:13And the Patriots lead remains the same. 16 points. 23 to 7. The other is now taking over first and 10 at their own 20 yard line.
- 1:28:23We have 9 minutes 43 seconds to go in the third quarter under our contract with arrangement where the Patriots for this broadcast. The answers for this game have been selected by station WBZ subject to the approval of the Patriots football team.
- 1:28:33However WBZ radio retains the final right of selection of the announcement. The others first and 10 at their own 20. One loan setback double tight ends wide receivers to both side.
- 1:28:43It is the pass to the left side to borrow it is incomplete. A wide receiver screen to Ken Barrow on the near side right through his head. That's the third ball he's dropped today. He's having a tough day feeling that ball.
- 1:28:55Patriots in the last two drives now have come up without a score goal and that's just giving Houston that little breath that they need.
- 1:29:05The last two times they've driven down into Houston territory tried to field goal attempts and came up short. So 23 to 7 and Houston still trying to get back in.
- 1:29:15Red for a wide to the right back to throw past. Set it up. Flares it out to the right to Campbell at the 20. Campbell at the 25. Hit and knocked down at about the 34 yard line.
- 1:29:25Ray Hamilton pursuing in on the tackle with a stable or the Patriots and Rod Schott. But it's the first down for the orders on the screen pass to world Campbell.
- 1:29:35The Patriots scored on their first five possessions with three field goals and two touchdowns. The last two trips down the field have ended up on missed field goals.
- 1:29:45The others first and 10 ball at their own 34. Mike Renfrow son of Ray Renfrow played for the Cleveland Browns a long time ago is wide to the right.
- 1:29:55But oh wide to the left two tight ends for one setback and that's Campbell. Campbell gets the call. It's the right side and it's stopped as he gets to the 35 yard line and a gain of a yard.
- 1:30:05Patriots just clogging the alleys for Campbell beautifully. Richard Bishop was there with Raymond Hamilton for the Patriots.
- 1:30:13It's going to be second down and nine yards to go for Houston at their own 35. Tony McGee in. Mel Lunsford out of the defensive line.
- 1:30:22Schott and Zabel the outside linebackers Nelson and Hunt the inside linebackers. Con remains at strong safety. Now the Patriots put 11 men on the line of scrimmage on second down and eight at the 35 yard line.
- 1:30:36He dropped off some people. Pastor Rene after checking off. He goes back to throw sets it up fires near side and it is caught by Caster at the 40 out to the 43 and then stopped by Rod Schott of the Patriots along with Sam Hunt both wrapping up Richard Caster.
- 1:30:55That's again however to the 42 yard line of their about that in other placement of the ball. They'll be shy of a first down still. They're down about two for Houston at the 42 yard line.
- 1:31:07Well the Patriots defense got the job done when they faked that blitz they forced past Rene and the Oilers to check off to a blitz pattern and then they jump back into their normal position.
- 1:31:17Caster coming out from the left tight end slot just came on a quick look out. Past Rene he got it to me was wide open when he caught it but the good pursuit of the Patriots prevented him from getting a first down.
- 1:31:27Double tight ends for Houston Caster on the right wing. It is third down and a long yard for the Oilers at their own 42. They give us the Campbell to the right side. He breaks it for a first down and hurdles out to midfield before Sam Hunt drags him down.
- 1:31:41Campbell hit that right side in a hurry and got it out close to midfield and they spot it down at the 50 yard line for first down for the Houston Oilers and they keep their drive alive with 703 to go here in the third quarter.
- 1:31:53Notice one thing in this game. You know very few penalties have been called. You're right. I haven't seen that flag one too many times. One penalty was called. No we had two off sides. One was declined.
- 1:32:04Both defensive off sides which is somewhat rare. Oilers come out sending Barber wide to the left. Caster in the right slot wide to the right is borough. It's a good to Campbell on the draw and he is nailed at midfield.
- 1:32:21Ray Hamilton making the first hit and then let everybody else come in to support. Hamilton got help from Haynes, Lunsford and Hunt.
- 1:32:32Hamilton has had an outstanding game for the Patriots. Now the Patriot defense goaler has really done the job and so far that is the key.
- 1:32:39Not allowing Houston to run the ball, forcing them to throw. Houston knows they can throw but they have to try to run the ball.
- 1:32:45Second down and nine for the Oilers at the Patriot 49 yard line. High formation behind Basterini. Basterini play action fake. Back to throw.
- 1:32:52Let's it go long and deep and overthrown. Intended for either Caster or Barber. They were both in the vicinity but a hard rush that time by the Patriots and they hit Basterini just as he got the ball away and certainly changed the trajectory of the pass.
- 1:33:10Third down and nine for the Oilers at the Patriot 49 yard line. Five fifty five. Left to play in the third quarter. The Patriots lead twenty three to seven.
- 1:33:20Next Sunday we're at Shea Stadium in New York to meet the New York Jets. Twelve forty five every time on the Patriots football network.
- 1:33:27Wide left is double or okay and Barrow left slot is Renfrow wide to the right. Caster. Carpenter the Lone set back. Barber tight to the right and motion to the right goes Renfrow, Basterini drops straight back to throw.
- 1:33:37Sets it up. Here's the rush. It's the screen. It is complete. The Carpenter at forty five. Hit it to fifty and stops at the forty nine.
- 1:33:43Outstanding defense and again it was Ray Hamilton. Super precipile Hamilton as he was right there waiting for the screen to develop. Again Hamilton a big play and he has had a big big game for the Patriots.
- 1:33:54Fourth down the Oilers of course the punt. Big hand for the defense and they deserve it. Cliff Parsley back into the ballgame for Houston to punt. He has kicked twice so far today.
- 1:34:07This first punt was very poor. Second punt he hit pretty good. That's the one that Morgan fumbled and led to the Houston touchdown. Deep for the Patriots Haines at the fifteen and Cliff Parsley stands at his thirty five.
- 1:34:21Do kick it away for the Oilers. Good snap right on the money and whistled for all the Oilers. We're going to be called for delay of the game.
- 1:34:28Delay of the game on Houston. They used up there a lot of thirty seconds and so the ball will go back to the Houston forty six yard line. And that means Haines will step up to about the twenty yard line or so to await Parsley's punt.
- 1:34:41Parsley now stands at his thirty one yard line and Lawrence of Arricano waiting the punt. Don't garnish things too much. Parsley waiting. Arms swinging.
- 1:34:55They're taking a long time to get the ball back. Now they do. It's on the money to Parsley and he runs out of beautiful high booming punt.
- 1:35:03Bear catch signal for by Haines. It hits at the five and goes into the end zone. Automatic touch back. Flags are down. Flags are down.
- 1:35:12And let's see what the penalty is. Not at the line of scrimmage either. It was downfield and the Patriots seem to be disagreeing with the call of the official.
- 1:35:26Let's see what the penalty is. Talking things over with Tim Fox. And we've had no indication yet. Well the Oilers offense is back out on the field.
- 1:35:41Well if it's a personal foul penalty or something it would give the Oilers a first down. Apparently that's what it's going to be. The flag is down about the thirty six yard line.
- 1:35:51As we await the word from the officials on what the penalty is. Only other score change that we have. Gill at this point Minnesota after spotting Chicago seven points has gone out on top of them fourteen a seven in the second period.
- 1:36:05Now they're coming over to explain the penalty to Chuck Fairbanks. As he wants to find out what's going on Patriots defensive team. Well part of the defensive team part of the kick return team.
- 1:36:17Illegal cut number forty five on the defense first down.
- 1:36:21An illegal cut against the Patriots first down Houston. So the Oilers retain possession of the ball first in ten at the Patriot forty nine yard line.
- 1:36:36He said forty five he must have meant forty eight Timmy Fox I believe. All right the Oilers now the Patriots take a timeout.
- 1:36:46The Patriots have called a timeout. All right let's take a timeout with a score the Patriots twenty three the Oilers seven.
- 1:36:54Just as there's lots of excitement in New England Patriots football there's excitement in a Regency scandal. You see more people are listening to the real drama of police fire emergency calls and more on a Regency action radio.
- 1:37:07You'll hear the news while it's happening and from where it's happening. These busy little monitor radio scanners constantly search for an active signal automatically. Stop to hear a message being transmitted then search for a reply or another message.
- 1:37:20No fiddling with dials and you don't need any technical knowledge to operate Regency action radio scanners. If you want to get the inside story get a Regency scanner then you'll really know what goes on in your town.
- 1:37:32There's a wide choice of models from eighty four ninety five and up to the new no crystal units plus a special factory rebate for Regency. When it comes to scanners they lead the league.
- 1:37:44So you're nearby Regency dealer and in Hope all stories Massachusetts and Rhode Island say right one socket East Providence and Warwick and Tony Goodridge television city Cranston.
- 1:37:54Well the penalty against the Patriots you know for the illegal cut on the punter turn giving the others an automatic first down. And this keeps Houston very much in the ballgame because if they score on this possession.
- 1:38:04I got a twenty three to fourteen ballgame as you head into the final quarter and about anything could happen past Rene can really throw the ball and the others are a dangerous team.
- 1:38:14Patriots have had things all their own way thus far. Why do the writers run for out of the leftist borough double tight ends for Houston carpenter the loan setback. First and ten at the Patriot forty nine pastor any barking signals that give us to know when it is the end around the
- 1:38:29castor turning it wide to the right at the forty seven and he's brought down Steve Zabel Zabel stayed as ground stayed at home waited made the tackle on castor along with Steve Nelson. It is a game of one yard on the end around.
- 1:38:47To castor so in developing and I think that's what enabled the Patriot defense to get over there. Although Zabel held his ground he needed help. Steve Nelson lined up over the middle was able to get over there but the good pursuit and the slow developing reverse made it
- 1:39:02unsuccessful second down and nine for Houston at the Patriot forty nine pastor any of the quick pitch to corporate attorney wide of left he looks to throw the ball he doesn't study carries down to the forty five and his riff got about on the near side by Richard Bishop.
- 1:39:13We brought him down along with Steve Nelson. Nelson's having a great year. If he doesn't make the Pro Bowl this year. There should be an investigation just having an outstanding year.
- 1:39:24All spotted out of the Patriot forty five yard line where it is third down for the orders and six yards to go there and six for Houston at the Patriot forty five. Now McCrae is back in as an extra defensive back.
- 1:39:39Hunt comes out and Lunsford goes in and Nelson comes out third down six for Houston at the Patriot forty five slot right formation run from pastor any goes straight back to throw sets it up.
- 1:39:54Fires over the middle of this complete the carpenter at the forty thirty five and down to the Patriot thirty three goes Rob Carpenter good all around back is brought down by Michael Haynes and Steve's able but it's the first down for the orders to the Patriot thirty three and so Houston is marching to the
- 1:40:10Patriot thirty three yard line with three fifty one to go in the third quarter and the Patriots leading twenty three to seven. That was the half time score.
- 1:40:18And one of the many big third down plays that you see that one coming in favor of Houston they had to keep this drive alive in order to stick get back in there.
- 1:40:27Slot right formation for the orders Barbara wide of the left Renfrow in the right slot no tight end in there. Basterini play action back to throw shoots it is caught by Barbara down to the fifteen yard line.
- 1:40:38First down for Houston to the tight end Mike Barbara Basterini is really pulling the trigger on that rifle it is. Got a blitz from Steve's able on the weak side that time left one man open and you had a one on one situation over the middle.
- 1:40:54Now the importance of running for Houston is that they like to do a lot of play faking a lot of play action and run their passing that way.
- 1:41:01So if your running game is not going it doesn't help that play action pass that much. That's why they try desperately to run in this game.
- 1:41:08First in 10 Houston at the 15 yard line Basterini checking off at the line of scrimmage. Basterini on the gift to Campbell the right he finds a hole he's inside the 10 and down to the six yard line.
- 1:41:19He is very quick and very powerful. You know that he's got great power but the quickness is there. Right there good block by Fisher number 60 providing a little bit of a hole. Zabel is going to have to come and just hold on and help and hope for some help from some of his friends.
- 1:41:33When Bob Phillips said Coach at Houston was asked doesn't Campbell get up slow. He says yes but he also goes down slow.
- 1:41:41He won't go down at all unless you really get a hold of him. Second down in a couple. They get hold of him here. It'll be shy of the first down.
- 1:41:50Rod Schoed who recovered a fumble in the first half for the Patriots is there for New England. So be third down and around a yard to go for a first down.
- 1:42:05Steve Zabel comes out and Steve King replaces him for the defense of the New England Patriots.
- 1:42:16Third down and one Houston needs a touchdown. They got to have a touchdown. They've got two down to run it as they they choose to do that.
- 1:42:24Hopefully they're not going to go for three points. Straight shot Campbell first down. He flew in there didn't he? He gets a quick start.
- 1:42:43Oh he flew in there. A lot of a lot of people go up over the top. You can see right here straight shot to hit the man in motion but straight ahead.
- 1:42:54And he is low to the ground when he gets a hold of that football and goes into the line. A lot of backs will jump over top but I don't know where you're going to go.
- 1:43:02I'm going to go to the Marine to make sure that you get underneath him. This is the 17th play of this drive.
- 1:43:13Campbell. He has stopped short. Raymond Hamilton at the bottom of the step. This drive started back at the Houston 20 yard line.
- 1:43:3047 seconds now counting down. 43 seconds win the third quarter. They ought to get moving because they score a touchdown. They want the wind to their back when they kick off.
- 1:43:43But I'm sure they're thinking first things first.
- 1:43:52They're thinking touchdown Houston. Rob Carpenter his second touchdown of the afternoon. His fifth on the year and is now a 23 to 13 ball game.
- 1:44:03The Oilers are right back in. I said that Earl Campbell goes underneath while they got the other kind right here up over top. Rob Carpenter and gets into the end zone with still 23 seconds remaining on the clock.
- 1:44:15So when they kick off they're going to have the wind to their back and they had a reprieve on the kick. Fiddler against the Patriots costing them in the end. The bottom line. Six points. Maybe seven. Tony Fritz.
- 1:44:29The extra point attempt. It is good. It is now in New England. 23. Houston 14. 23 seconds left to go. Third quarter.
- 1:44:46Your Christmas limousine or a mountain car award. A battle with the competition that's going to make you the winner by staffing the competition with year end values on the greatest lineup of cars we've ever offered.
- 1:45:00Like the new Christmas LeBaron, the car that adds a little life to your style with every model. A sporty coupe that's got the competition running scared with options like soft leather seating and a T bar roof.
- 1:45:13The difference to them where prestige rests on great value. Not a $12,000 price tag and the new size town and country wagon. The comfort of Chrysler. The work habit of a wagon.
- 1:45:25Yes, in the battle for your car dollar at clean of time. Nobody's got a lineup of winners like your Chrysler Pymotealer. We'll make you a winner too during car war.
- 1:45:37Tony Fritz to kick it off for the Houston dollars and you know they've come back strong here in this ball game. And I've got a feeling that the fourth quarter is going to be a rip snort.
- 1:45:57Well, the two drives we talked about the Patriots coming up short without any scores just kept Houston alive a little longer. They took advantage with that big penalty drove 80 yards for a second touchdown in their ball game.
- 1:46:09I put to kick it off into the win. Deep for the Patriots is Claybourne. He's up around the 17 yard line, figuring on some help from the wind. Fritz moves into the ball and he hits it end over end. Claybourne will field it at the 15. He drops it. He picks it up back at the 10. Now he's had enough field at the 15 heading left at the 20 and slips across to about the 25 or 26 yard line where the Patriots offense will go to work first and 10 at their own 26.
- 1:46:34Let's pause 15 seconds. This is the BZ Patriots football network 11 10 W H I M with the best country music and much more, including Howard Kosel's daily sports commentary mornings at 8 45 here on the country giant 11 10 W H I M Providence.
- 1:46:52Marked at the 24 yard line. The officials saying that Claybourne's knee touched down at the 24. So the Patriots are first and 10 at their own 24 yard line. Jackson wide to the right, Morgan to the left, cutting him the full back Johnson on the left wing.
- 1:47:06Rogan on first down calling signals to give us to know when Groganon play action fake back to throw shoots it long and deep for Harold Jackson and it is intercepted at the 28 yard line on a great defensive play by Willie Alexander.
- 1:47:20Cutting right in front of Jackson and making the interceptions. The Patriots tried to go deep to Jackson and the bomb and the orders get the interception at their own 28 yard line. Willie Alexander's fifth pass interception of the season and now the Oilers have the ball with four seconds to go in the third quarter.
- 1:47:38The Patriots lead by 23 to 14 with the orders with a definite opportunity in the momentum. Gina in this game has swung toward the Oilers after that first half.
- 1:47:47I don't agree with you. Houston has got themselves something going here offensively. They've been trying to run. They are just getting a little more out of their running game and that has been helping their passing game.
- 1:47:57But now another turnover in the offense once again with the ability to develop better rhythm.
- 1:48:02Pastorini has them set. First intent at the Houston 28. Carpenter the fullback. Campbell offset left half. Pastorini only gets a carpenter right up the chute and he bangs it out to the 33 yard line. And again about five yards from the play. That's the end of the third quarter. The score.
- 1:48:18After three quarters of Schaefer Stadium in Foxborough the Patriots 23 and the orders 14. And now we go into fourth quarter action. The Houston Oilers trailing 23 to 14 have made a big comeback in this game. The Patriots dominated it.
- 1:48:32Wow. Big gust of wind just came in almost blew. But they've made a big comeback and that the Patriots in their last two drives were unable to come up with a score. And in doing so they put on a sustained drive of 80 yards aided by a penalty. And it turns out right now it could be a big penalty on a punning situation.
- 1:48:50Illegal cut of a defender going downfield and it gave the ball back to Houston at midfield and from there they went down and scored. Dan Pastorini and Mike Renfrow connecting on a good pass reception. A big third down. Also kept their drive alive.
- 1:49:08And then Earl Campbell blasted from the 16 down to the 6 and then down to the 3. And there's a rock carpenter carried in with 23 seconds to go in the third period. They narrowed the gap. 23 to 14. Here we go into fourth quarter action. Here's Gil.
- 1:49:20And the others with a win that they're back second down in five Houston at their own 33 slot left. Renfrow wide left. Borrowed the backs in a split. Pastorini on a gift to Campbell to the right side flags you down. Campbell is ripped down at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:49:33Again Raymond Hamilton right there to make the stop with Mel Lunsford. The penalty markers are down. I think the Patriots were offside. They were. Five yards will give the others a first down. A crucial penalty here.
- 1:49:52Paul comes out to the 38 yard line and offside number 71 on a defense. Hamilton was the man offside and the others have a first down. So where they were stopped with no gain the penalty gives them a first down.
- 1:50:08First in 10 Houston. They're 38 wide left is for all on the right wing is Renfrow carpenter and Campbell in the backfield. Pastorini barking signals looking at a Patriot three man front. The gift comes to carpenter cutting back to the right side and haul down when he gets to the 40 yard line.
- 1:50:28Meeting him was Mel Lunsford of the Patriots as he started to cut left and then stopped and cut it back up inside.
- 1:50:39Paul spotted down at the 40 yard line second down 41 yard line second down in 7 Houston 14 and a half minutes to go. Richard Bishop leaving the field. We don't know what Richard's problem is.
- 1:50:52Right now playing the right defensive end is Greg Sean on the right wing Renfrow wide to the left is for all the gift comes to a carpenter bursting across the 45 and up to the 48 49 yard line before Fox brings him down with help from a show.
- 1:51:11But the Oilers pick up a first down out close to the 49 yard line and Fox is not getting up. Quickly Tom Haley not there with Mark Hennick to look at Tim Fox and they're looking at his left leg.
- 1:51:28So Fox is shaken up on the play. We don't know what the situation is with Tim. Richard Bishop was holding his left hand up by his midsection and they had it wrapped up. He possibly could have been cut or something like that.
- 1:51:45Other scores Denver 10 Cleveland 7 third quarter Philadelphia 10 and the Jets 9 in the third quarter Miami 25 Buffalo 17 in the third quarter.
- 1:51:54Second quarter scores three to three the Giants and Redskins 14 to 13 Detroit meeting Tampa 14 to 7 Minnesota leading Chicago and Fox is coming out pretty much under his own steam.
- 1:52:07But definitely coming to the sidelines limping a bit. Well the Oilers were on the March their first down at midfield trailing 23 to 14 the Oilers battling back. They're a tough football team.
- 1:52:19Patriots led 23 to nothing late in the first half with the Oilers scored inside the final two minutes of the half. And since then Houston's offense has been working very very well.
- 1:52:3013 minutes 59 seconds to go here in the ball game with the Patriots on top by nine points. And you know the way the Patriot offense has been sputtering the last couple of times.
- 1:52:40The Oilers score again I think this thing is going to go out of the wire.
- 1:52:44Well they put the pressure on the defense in not coming up with the scores and not getting the kind of drive they ordinarily were getting in early in the game.
- 1:52:51And Houston recognizes this so they're trying to take advantage of that. But the thing that I like about the Houston team and what they're doing is they have not abandoned the running game.
- 1:53:00Of course when you have a running back like Earl Campbell they've kept the proper balance running and throwing a lot of teams will abandon it.
- 1:53:06They'll panic and go right to the throwing game and that's what the Patriots are hoping they would do.
- 1:53:10First in 10 Houston a big field. Pastoreini on a gift to know what play action back to throw is going to be hit in sack back at the forty three yard line.
- 1:53:18Shom and Shope in on the sack of Dan Pastoreini. That's the first sack of the game for either team.
- 1:53:26Richard Bishop left the field with a cut finger that was injured in the first half and open cut.
- 1:53:32Steve Zabel injured his right knee and he will not return this afternoon. Zabel injured his right knee.
- 1:53:41Just a few moments ago and he will not be back in this ballgame. Replacing him right now is Steve King.
- 1:53:48We had a blip that time from Rod Short and after Pastoreini faked the foley he was supposed to pick up the blitzing man he couldn't.
- 1:53:54That's why we saw the sack.
- 1:53:56Second down in 16 Pastoreini back to throw. Here's the rush again he fires to the right side complete the barber at the forty forty five and down to the forty eight forty nine yard line.
- 1:54:06Back to the original line of scrimmage was Mike Barber cut down by Nelson and Claiborne and Hamilton.
- 1:54:12They'll make it third down in 10 for the Houston others out close to midfield. They spotted at the forty nine yard line third and eleven.
- 1:54:20Third down in 11 for Houston at their own forty nine and now Fox is back in along with Lunsford coming out.
- 1:54:30Sharman McCray Patriots on defense third and eleven for Houston at their own forty nine.
- 1:54:38Borrow wide to the right. Right to the left side. Pastoreini on third and eleven. Big play. Back to throw goes Pastoreini sets it up. Let's it go long and deep complete left side line.
- 1:54:50The rent for all first down to the Patriot thirty five yard line. Well he ran the pattern in between the up man which is Rod Short who flares out into the short flat.
- 1:55:00Michael Haynes covering the deep. Renfro just cut in between him. Pastoreini under some pressure was still able to get that pass off.
- 1:55:08Lobb that over shows head and in front of Michael Haynes a fine reception well executed. Ray Hamilton trying desperately to get in that time it appeared from here like he was really being held.
- 1:55:18So it's the first down for the Houston others at the Patriot thirty seven others are a tough bunch. Renfro on the right wing.
- 1:55:25Borrow wide to the left and an official timeout is taken to get a new football.
- 1:55:31Official fasted over to one of the other ones on the side the side judge the terrible pass.
- 1:55:39All right the orders out. Carpenter the fullback offset left half is Campbell tight end right is Barbara on the right wing is Renfro.
- 1:55:47Pastoreini play action back to throw fires to the right side. Upside incomplete to Campbell hard rush that time the blitz by Schott and the rush by Lunsbury.
- 1:55:57To be second down in ten yards to go for Houston. Tim Fox is OK and back in the ball game is able to stop injured right knee and he will not be back this afternoon.
- 1:56:07Now they're coming up with the right defensive calls. They're blitzing the right linebacker in these situations because he's looking to go the same side that the blitz is coming from the back who's getting the fake cannot pick up Schott and he was trying to hit Campbell out on that short flat.
- 1:56:21Again it is bow to the left side and Renfro on the right wing. Pastoreini quick pitch the carpenter turning wide to the left and he is written down as he gets to about the thirty one yard line show him there to make the tackle for the Patriots.
- 1:56:34Along with the Haynes and Carpenter is shaken up on the plane the others come out to check him over with a score of the Patriots twenty three the others fourteen let's take a time out.
- 1:57:05You can go to get.
- 1:57:12When you say.
- 1:57:14You said the word that means you like to do.
- 1:57:21When you say.
- 1:57:23You say you can.
- 1:57:24You.
- 1:57:42You said it all and I was a place saying to it.
- 1:57:46You know.
- 1:57:54You know a better offensive club with Carpenter in their fullback you can do a lot of things and he scored the two touchdowns for them hard running good running instincts and he gives he gives Campbell a nice balance.
- 1:58:06Well down at the Patriot thirty one yard line third down in four yards to go for the Oilers twelve minutes eight seconds to go in the game the Patriots twenty three the Oilers fourteen.
- 1:58:17Steve King remains in his left sideline backer replacing Zabel is out with a knee injury.
- 1:58:23I three wide receivers in.
- 1:58:25Castor wide to the right Renfro left slot follow wide to the left third down in four.
- 1:58:30One setback Tim Wilson pastor in he goes straight back to throw let's it go to the right side and it is incomplete.
- 1:58:40Over defending was Tim Fox banging right into the intended receiver and that's the tight end Mike Barber.
- 1:58:49At the fourteen yard line of the Patriots fourth down for Houston and Dick Conn coming over there to help a rich caster was growing up the sidelines.
- 1:58:57It appeared like that's where Pastor Rene was going.
- 1:59:00Gell and he looked like he was open Barber the tight end then just came running right into the same vicinity and it drew the safety man over there to help out Michael hands the corner.
- 1:59:13Houston trailing by nine they want to cut the margin and attempt to forty eight yards.
- 1:59:18Now remember Pastor Rene is holding but Fritz does have the win.
- 1:59:22Look at here.
- 1:59:27The cover.
- 1:59:28And a flag is down a flag is down a shovel pass from pastor.
- 1:59:36Offside offside against the play will stand.
- 1:59:40Well you don't see this too often.
- 1:59:43New England is offside but they're faking the kick and look at the little shovel pass forward.
- 1:59:48Good blocking by Wilson outside number forty five on the outside man and good running.
- 1:59:58And that's carpenter number twenty six to which is good news.
- 2:00:01He was the man that was injured a couple of plays ago.
- 2:00:05The ball just inside the fourteen yard line.
- 2:00:10Most of the time on those fakes the the holder will fake it and roll out one way or another.
- 2:00:15They had men on the outside to handle that.
- 2:00:18That was an unusual type of play and it worked first down Houston.
- 2:00:27Tim Wilson Wilson to the nine Steve King makes the tackle again a four it'll be second down and six.
- 2:00:35You can see that you can see a difference now before the offensive line of Houston was not moving that defense back any.
- 2:00:42Now they are so that back is getting in there and he's picking up four and five yards of crack.
- 2:00:48Get get doing that particularly down in that tough area inside the ten yard line.
- 2:00:52That means the offensive line is doing a job.
- 2:00:54Chuck Fairbanks said coach of New England looking on.
- 2:01:01Earl Campbell dives to about the seven Raymond Hamilton is the man who stopped him along with Steve King.
- 2:01:10King replacing Steve Zabel King did a good job on that.
- 2:01:14He came across the line of scrimmage got penetration made sure that he cut back inside not giving the outside.
- 2:01:21Earl Campbell 66 yards 20 carry and still with 10 and a half minutes to go in the ballgame.
- 2:01:28Don't forget after the ballgame this very NFL report on NBC.
- 2:01:32Stay with it.
- 2:01:33Third down for the goal for a first down.
- 2:01:40They'll run it down here.
- 2:01:42Tim Wilson may have picked up the first down.
- 2:01:46Let's see where the official spot the ball.
- 2:01:50Steve King again makes the tackle.
- 2:01:53It'll be first down goal to go.
- 2:01:55I said they run the ball down there because there are nine points down.
- 2:01:57So three points three points is just a lot as important as a touchdown.
- 2:02:02Straight ahead you're looking at number 45 Tim Wilson.
- 2:02:05He's just looking for an open spot and look at him carrying that ball with both hands.
- 2:02:10He should do it also when he gets hit because that's the time that the ball generally pops loose.
- 2:02:16Now they got four shots at it.
- 2:02:23Diving over the top is Wilson and he'll come up at the one yard line.
- 2:02:29Steve Nelson was there to greet him along with Sam.
- 2:02:33No I believe was that Rob Carpenter.
- 2:02:36Yes it was.
- 2:02:39So it'll be second down and goal to go.
- 2:02:42So the Oilers battling from behind trailing at one stage twenty three to another.
- 2:02:58This is the time it's great to have a guy like Campbell down here.
- 2:03:03And he is buried at the line of scrimmage when he scores.
- 2:03:07So it's down Earl Campbell his eighth of the year.
- 2:03:12Wasn't anything there Charlie as I said it's great to have a guy like Earl Campbell down near that goal line
- 2:03:17because of his tremendous quickness and his great power.
- 2:03:21Now look here he's coming straight in the line.
- 2:03:23There isn't much there and he is so low so low that there's no way that you're going to get a hold of him.
- 2:03:30He keeps that leg drive going right there lunging in with that great strength into the end zone.
- 2:03:36Now we do have a game going.
- 2:03:42Tony Fritz to attempt the point after.
- 2:03:47Bad snap had to wait on.
- 2:03:50It'll be no good.
- 2:03:55So that makes it New England twenty three and Houston twenty a three point difference.
- 2:04:03Well the ball is rolling back on the ground.
- 2:04:07I know the past really was an outstanding baseball player and his youth didn't really have a shot at it.
- 2:04:13Really disrupted the timing and everything and you have to get that ball off in about one point four seconds.
- 2:04:19And there's much too long.
- 2:04:22Ninety three left to go.

- 2:05:30Douglas oil super service from a super company with a super deal.
- 2:05:33So it's twenty three to twenty the Patriots lead down to three points with nine oh three to go in the contest.
- 2:05:39Tony Fritch to kick it off for Houston.
- 2:05:41Deep for the Patriots.
- 2:05:42Ray Claiborne at the goal line and Fritch awaiting the referee's signal to kick it off.
- 2:05:49A lot of errors in the kicking game this afternoon have been vital.
- 2:05:56Patriots dropping a putt.
- 2:05:58The Oilers picking it up and eventually scoring a touchdown.
- 2:06:02The Oilers fumbling on a kickoff the Patriots recovering and going into score later on.
- 2:06:06The kickoff comes down to Claiborne at the five up the middle of the ten heading left at the fifteen twenty turns it outside at the twenty five still on his feet at the thirty turning up to the thirty five to the thirty six
- 2:06:18and a flag down late hit late hit against Houston that'll bring the ball out to midfield.
- 2:06:23Here there have been a lot of errors in the kicking game this afternoon that have resulted in the score that we have right now twenty three to twenty errors on both sides.
- 2:06:32Some bad kickoff to start the game from Tony Fritch gave the Patriots outstanding field position at the forty nine of Houston which they went into score from and then when Houston had to put.
- 2:06:43He almost missed the ball parsley did in the ball once again in great field position to miss field goals and now a fumbled putt a fumbled putt and here we missed the point after so you're right you're the kicking game playing a big role in this game.
- 2:06:59The ball back down to the Houston forty nine yard line a late hit on Ray Claiborne who had an exceptional kickoff returned out to the thirty six and now the Patriots are in good field position first in ten.
- 2:07:12At the Houston forty nine.
- 2:07:14Jackson to the right Morgan to the left cutting him in the backfield he gets the call off right tackle driving across the line of scrimmage and down to the Houston forty four.
- 2:07:22That's what they needed that good first down play five yard game for cutting him in the first first down game of five it'll be second in five at the other forty four yard line.
- 2:07:35I'm remaining eight and a half minutes the Patriots twenty three the others twenty in Buffalo it is twenty five seventeen Miami leading the Buffalo Bill.
- 2:07:47Numbing cold here the Sao Pune and Shaffer Patriots out Jackson left Morgan right ivory in the backfield now he gets the call heading to the left turns the corner on his feet down to the Houston forty one and wrapped up as he gets to the forty one yard line.
- 2:08:03The tackle made by linebacker Ted Washington of the Oilers at about the forty one yard line so it'll be third and about a yard to go for the Patriots down around the Houston forty one yard line.
- 2:08:18They're going to bring in the two tight and off that.
- 2:08:23They're down in the yard to go for the Patriots.
- 2:08:26At the other forty yard line.
- 2:08:33They just break the huddle it only got ten seconds to run the playoff so they hustle up to the line of scrimmage.
- 2:08:35It is third down and he had to go out the Houston forty broken on a good two ivory to the right trying to turn the corner he cannot do it.
- 2:08:43He's brought down at the forty one yard line big defensive plays.
- 2:08:46Steve Kiner and James Young making the stop for the Oilers so it is fourth down on the yard to go at the Houston forty one.
- 2:08:56It's leading twenty three to twenty a crucial point of the ball game.
- 2:08:59All right they're faced with the decision now whether to try for this first down and control that ball or else punt it and it appears like they're going to try for it.
- 2:09:08The Patriots have not funded yet in this game.
- 2:09:13They've given the ball up twice on missed field goals and once on a pass interception.
- 2:09:18Third down fourth down and about two before the Patriots at the Houston forty two.
- 2:09:24The Oilers mounted up.
- 2:09:26Rogan bootlegging left.
- 2:09:28He's got Francis open.
- 2:09:29He looks he fires for us.
- 2:09:31Francis incomplete.
- 2:09:33Yes he did.
- 2:09:34He had Francis open much earlier.
- 2:09:37He waited too long to unload the ball.
- 2:09:39He had Francis wide open at about the twenty yard line by the time Steve looked up and threw the ball.
- 2:09:45Francis was down around the ten and covering very nicely for Houston was Greg Stemrick.
- 2:09:50And so the Oilers take over in excellent field position first and ten at their own forty one yard line.
- 2:09:57It looked like Steve had a little problem in cross stepping in order to wind up and throw right handed.
- 2:10:04He's running left rolling out left.
- 2:10:06And you have to turn in order to set and throw that ball and in doing so he took up some valuable time.
- 2:10:12Francis was wide open if he could have gotten the ball through him quickly.
- 2:10:16And then the support came over and knocked it down as he lobbed the ball as well.
- 2:10:21He could not put up anything on it.
- 2:10:27Now you know you said late in the first half that you expected a rock on second half of play and that's exactly what we've had here this afternoon.
- 2:10:36The Oilers have come back strong much to their credit.
- 2:10:39The Patriot offense after scoring the first five times they had the ball as a sputtered here in the second half with the whole thing in no small part due to the fine defense set up by the Oilers.
- 2:10:53The Oilers have taken the running game away from the Patriots here in the second half.
- 2:10:57But they have done the Patriots of course had two good drives and they couldn't come up with any scores.
- 2:11:03At that time you were sure of the importance of it because they had a commanding lead twenty three to seven.
- 2:11:09But you could almost sense that it was just keeping Houston close enough.
- 2:11:12They had this high powered offense.
- 2:11:14They have been a second half team.
- 2:11:16Their most productive scoring quarter has been the last quarter in which they've scored 60 points.
- 2:11:21So they're the type of team throughout this season who has come back in the second half and have made close games out of games that seem to be out of reach.
- 2:11:29And so now it's up to the Patriot defense with 642 to go on the Patriots leading by three points.
- 2:11:35Slot right formation run throw wide to the right ball wide to the left is Barber high formation behind pastor any first down play action fake back to throw pump fake.
- 2:11:45He shoots it long and deep as man is open.
- 2:11:51Box was in behind them.
- 2:11:52Renfrow leaping high in the air at about 11 yards line.
- 2:11:55Just could not hold on.
- 2:11:57And it is second down as the others went for the whole enchilada on that one second and ten Houston second down and ten yards to go for the other.
- 2:12:10He had Renfrow in the right slot once again the play action past green he does it so well it contains that rush just momentarily allows him to get back and the receivers are downfield he was open to me.
- 2:12:23Fox was racing to get back there.
- 2:12:25Got there just in time as the ball hung same formation run for a right slot follow wide to the right Barber wide to the left high formation carpenter and Campbell behind pastor any to give us to know and play action fake pastor any step.
- 2:12:39He looks he fires it is incomplete intended for Campbell at midfield.
- 2:12:44Good defensive play by Steve Nelson.
- 2:12:47Cutting in front of Campbell and knocking the ball down with his right hand.
- 2:12:50Ten or the Oilers at their own 41.
- 2:12:54Oilers have been productive on third down plays they have hit five out of 10 for 50% and anything over 35% on third down plays is considered good.
- 2:13:05The Oilers have been dangerous on third down here this afternoon and here they're faced with a third intent at their own 41.
- 2:13:11Six twenty seven to play 23 to 20 to Patriots lead.
- 2:13:15Why to the right.
- 2:13:17Renfrow.
- 2:13:18Why to the left.
- 2:13:19Right and right Barber.
- 2:13:21Offset left half Campbell.
- 2:13:22Pastor any on third down.
- 2:13:24He is straight back to pass.
- 2:13:25Here's the rush he fires right side complete the barber first down to the Patriot 45.
- 2:13:30Let's write and Mike Barber right down by Nelson and Claybourne with pastor any hitting Barber right on the money at the Patriot 45.
- 2:13:39And so the Oilers have a first down boy talk about a big third down play.
- 2:13:43Oh they've been very dangerous on third down throughout the game.
- 2:13:48Now McGee is out and Greg Boyd comes in for the Patriots to play the left defensive end.
- 2:13:55Barrow goes wide left Renfrow goes into the left slot copper into the full back and Campbell the tail back in an eye formation.
- 2:14:02Barber is tight to the right side.
- 2:14:04Pastor any checks over the Patriot defense.
- 2:14:07They give us to know on and play action back to throw pastor any here's the group.
- 2:14:21He wasn't going to miss that one Charlie made sure he nestled that right in his stomach.
- 2:14:27Officials time out and Oiler.
- 2:14:31Rob Carpenter second time in the ballgame that he's been shaking up as we look to the play one more time.
- 2:14:37Play action passed you can see 57 Nelson was reading run first past ready took a shot afterwards but there it is right in the middle of his stomach.
- 2:14:46That time double O Kenny Burrows was not going to give up the football.
- 2:14:49He wasn't going to drop that ball at the 19 yard line will take a time out with the score.
- 2:14:54New England 23 Houston 20.

- 2:16:23The diehard sold only a series.
- 2:16:30Second half as they were completely decimated in the first half.
- 2:16:35They're reeling now by three.
- 2:16:42Earl Campbell.
- 2:16:45Campbell inside the 15 yard line.
- 2:16:51Good thrust.
- 2:16:52Picking up four or five yards and this is tough territory down here.
- 2:16:55He's not getting a whole lot of daylight.
- 2:16:58Six yards deep.
- 2:16:59Six and a half yards deep in the backfield.
- 2:17:01He's looking to see wherever he can go.
- 2:17:04The big guard, number 64, George Reiner.
- 2:17:07That's about four yards.
- 2:17:10They need another play like that.
- 2:17:12Four minutes, 45 seconds.
- 2:17:14Left of the ball game.
- 2:17:15Campbell gets the call one more time.
- 2:17:18Well, there was nothing there that time.
- 2:17:20He ran right into the defensive line.
- 2:17:22Rod Schoen, Sam Hunt.
- 2:17:27It could be that past Terini is making sure that...
- 2:17:31Look where that ball is, right in the middle of the field.
- 2:17:35So that it is a straight ahead shot for the field goal kicker
- 2:17:40if they don't make the first down.
- 2:17:42Third down, four.
- 2:17:44I would suspect they might run it on his team.
- 2:17:50Bum likes to gamble.
- 2:17:52No, they'll run.
- 2:17:54Wilson.
- 2:17:56He will come up shy of the first down.
- 2:17:58We will go for the tie.
- 2:18:00It was sort of a draw play.
- 2:18:02Officials taking their time out,
- 2:18:04probably taking a close look to see exactly where it is.
- 2:18:07Well, do you recall not too long ago
- 2:18:12the New England Patriots on fourth down went for it?
- 2:18:17Now does Houston want to settle for a tie right now
- 2:18:22or just about four minutes to go?
- 2:18:25I would suspect that the offensive line
- 2:18:27is trying to talk Bum into going for it if they are sure.
- 2:18:31Measurement asked for.
- 2:18:38Oh, they don't need much, do they?
- 2:18:40Wilson.
- 2:18:44Just by that much.
- 2:18:46Just about a foot, a little over a foot to go.
- 2:18:48That's right.
- 2:18:49Now go back to that field goal attempt.
- 2:18:51Go back to the extra point.
- 2:18:53Go back to the extra point.
- 2:18:55Houston wants the tie out.
- 2:18:57Chuck Fairbanks looks on.
- 2:18:59The extra point.
- 2:19:01The extra point was big because now a field goal put you ahead.
- 2:19:05Now they're in a position with a record of six and four
- 2:19:08that they got to be concerned about making the playoffs.
- 2:19:11And they don't want to get into overtime,
- 2:19:13I'm sure, with the New England Patriots.
- 2:19:16Houston with a tie out and a discussion.
- 2:19:18The only problem here though is this.
- 2:19:21Even if they make the first down,
- 2:19:23who's to say that they're going to score a touchdown?
- 2:19:26That's right.
- 2:19:27We'll take a timeout.
- 2:19:29Three fifty seven left in the ball game.
- 2:19:31Twenty three, twenty.
- 2:19:33Houston is treading.

- 2:19:53Over sixty percent picked the 19 inch,
- 2:19:55Slovenia Super Set.
- 2:19:57Over sixty percent.
- 2:19:59We're not the biggest,
- 2:20:01but a lot of people think we've got the best picture.
- 2:20:04The Slovenia Super Set.

- 2:20:46The backyard line pours down just over a foot,
- 2:20:49disdaining a field goal attempt for a tie.
- 2:20:55Going for the first down.
- 2:20:57Campbell the remaining back.
- 2:20:59Caster in motion.
- 2:21:01He gets it.
- 2:21:03Campbell gets the first down.
- 2:21:05And brother, I'll tell you, he got it on his strength
- 2:21:08because he was met by that New England line,
- 2:21:10right at the line of scrimmage,
- 2:21:12and that great leg drive got him the first down.
- 2:21:16You can see Caster in motion,
- 2:21:18and you can see the offensive line moving,
- 2:21:20but there isn't a whole lot of movement there,
- 2:21:22but when Mr. Campbell hits that line,
- 2:21:24it's going to get enough movement right there.
- 2:21:26He's met right there at the line of scrimmage,
- 2:21:28but he ends up making about a yard or so.
- 2:21:31Seventy-one yards in the ballgame.
- 2:21:33Twenty-four carries for Earl Campbell.
- 2:21:35There's no secret who was going to get that football that time.
- 2:21:38Inside the eight yard line, first down goal to go.
- 2:21:48Campbell to the four.
- 2:21:50Maybe the four and a half, just inside the five,
- 2:21:53across the yard line, Sam Hunt makes the tackle.
- 2:21:56That was a big first down because as you look at the clock right now,
- 2:21:59three minutes, 15 seconds,
- 2:22:01they're inside the ten yard line,
- 2:22:04inside the five yard line,
- 2:22:06they score a touchdown and run out that clock down pretty good.
- 2:22:10May not be that New England would have any time to do anything.
- 2:22:16It seems they don't make it, they kick a field goal and tie it,
- 2:22:19and they won't have much of an opportunity to do anything.
- 2:22:29Campbell and Wilson are running back.
- 2:22:31Five yard penalty, too much time.
- 2:22:34No way you're supposed to do that.
- 2:22:37That clock is right up in front of him up on the scoreboard.
- 2:22:42So it'll move back to the ten yard line.
- 2:22:45Costly delay of game.
- 2:22:48Basterini was moving Campbell.
- 2:22:51Well, what was happening, he probably was changing the,
- 2:22:54look at his, he's moving his backs because he's probably changing the play
- 2:22:57on the line of scrimmage, getting everybody in position.
- 2:23:00But the most important thing that he had to worry about
- 2:23:02is up on the scoreboard, and that is the clock.
- 2:23:05Took too much time.
- 2:23:07That's costly five yards.
- 2:23:09And it's still second down, goal to go, now at the tail.
- 2:23:16He'll throw.
- 2:23:18As a man,
- 2:23:20touchdown!
- 2:23:22Ritz Castor, Castor his fourth touchdown of the year.
- 2:23:26And for the first time in the ballgame,
- 2:23:29Houston leads, he beats Dick Coyle.
- 2:23:32Well, I'll tell you, they have man-to-man cover.
- 2:23:34He's down on the goal line because they had to worry about stopping the run.
- 2:23:38There wasn't going to be any zones back there.
- 2:23:40Casper is a dangerous man near that goal line.
- 2:23:43Now, I'd like to say that the then pass to Rini took that time
- 2:23:47so he'd get better position and more of an area to throw.
- 2:23:51But I don't believe that's the case, but it was a good throw and a good catch.
- 2:23:55And what a turnaround we've had this afternoon by the Houston Oilers.
- 2:23:5859 yards on the drive as you look to the touchdown pass again
- 2:24:02to Ritz Castor, acquired from the Jets at the beginning of the season.
- 2:24:08Another bad snap!
- 2:24:11It is two bad snaps!
- 2:24:13An extra point of depth.
- 2:24:19So the margin remains three points.
- 2:24:22I don't...
- 2:24:25That wasn't... that didn't look so much with bad snap as Dan maybe just didn't handle the ball.
- 2:24:30You can see Tony Fritsch, he didn't know what to do there.
- 2:24:34Now, once again, it's a big play.
- 2:24:38It's now only a three-point difference with two minutes,
- 2:24:4139 seconds remaining in the ballgame.
- 2:24:46Houston will be kicking off to New England.
- 2:24:49Both the Patriots and the Oilers have two timeouts remaining in the ballgame.
- 2:24:54Dan Pasterinni, 12 for 19, 156 yards in the second half.
- 2:25:00So they have turned things around.
- 2:25:02They've got to get that extra point game down a little bit better than what they've been doing.
- 2:25:08Houston 26, New England 23.
- 2:25:11First time in the ballgame, the Oilers have led the margin is three.
- 2:25:15New England's cold, they haven't had the football, they haven't been out there.
- 2:25:19The offense has been standing around this whole second half.
- 2:25:22Fritsch kicks off.
- 2:25:24Claiborne, seven yard line.
- 2:25:26Raymond to the 50, to the 20.
- 2:25:29Boomer roommate of Earl Campbell at the University of Texas.
- 2:25:32In fact, he was the man who helped recruit Earl Campbell when he made his appearance
- 2:25:37as a senior in high school in the campus of Austin.
- 2:25:39Take a look at the snap.
- 2:25:41The ball wasn't that far off for Pasterinni to handle it.
- 2:25:46But the whole thing is that if you have to get that kick off in about 1.3 or 1.4 seconds
- 2:25:53from the snap to the kick, and if anything disrupts that,
- 2:25:58then it disrupts the timing of the kicker.
- 2:26:02Claiborne on the return is injured.
- 2:26:05New England from their own 28 yard line.
- 2:26:08Broken over the middle, passes complete.
- 2:26:1135 yard line to Andy Johnson.
- 2:26:13Greg Bingham makes the tackle.
- 2:26:15A gain of seven.
- 2:26:16It'll be second down and three.
- 2:26:19Two, 16, clock is moving.
- 2:26:21Time remaining in the ballgame.
- 2:26:24They got to get hustling.
- 2:26:25They need to get another playoff before the two-minute warning.
- 2:26:27They only have about seven seconds.
- 2:26:32With 3.24 to go in the first half,
- 2:26:34New England will be the second half of the game.
- 2:26:37In the first half, New England led 23 to nothing.
- 2:26:40They've been shut up by the Oilers, sets in.
- 2:26:45They'll be third down and three, cutting in the intended receiving.
- 2:26:49Ted Thompson was there.
- 2:26:51Two-minute warning.
- 2:26:52We'll be giving them both pitchers.
- 2:26:54Spicials time out.
- 2:26:55We'll be back with the conclusion of the down and three.
- 2:26:59Yeah, look for the backs.
- 2:27:00He likes to go to the backs in a situation like this.
- 2:27:03They have been in this situation.
- 2:27:05This isn't the first time this year that New England's been in this situation.
- 2:27:08They've been in before and they've come away a winner.
- 2:27:13Morris Ivory will lose, Yardon.
- 2:27:16It will be fourth down and about five.
- 2:27:19As Ted Thompson was there, pitchers take a timeout.
- 2:27:22Now, I don't understand that.
- 2:27:26Going with the sweep, giving the opportunity to the linebackers
- 2:27:31in the line to pursue along the line of scrimmage.
- 2:27:35Morris Ivory has been held to only 16 yards in eight carries.
- 2:27:39A week ago against Buffalo, he had a fantastic afternoon.
- 2:27:45Don't forget the Spurry NFL report.
- 2:27:47Immediately following our telecast here this afternoon.
- 2:27:49We'll be updating from New York all of the scores and highlights in the NFL.
- 2:27:54Now, if Houston wins, this will be the sixth time in seven games
- 2:28:00that they have trailed at halftime and then won.
- 2:28:03Houston, the only game that's been a runaway is the Cincinnati game that they lost.
- 2:28:08All other games have been seven or fewer points
- 2:28:11that separate the difference whether they won or lost.
- 2:28:14Except for the first half of this ballgame, which was a runaway.
- 2:28:17And then the Oilers got it together.
- 2:28:19That's right.
- 2:28:20I'd like to have a tape recording of what Bum said in the locker room at halftime.
- 2:28:24It will be fourth down and five.
- 2:28:3033 yard line.
- 2:28:32New England has the ball with 151 left to go.
- 2:28:37It is too late to putt and gamble.
- 2:28:39He's got to throw now.
- 2:28:40You know that he's going to throw the football.
- 2:28:42He's going to attempt to anyway.
- 2:28:43Under strong pressure, the passes incomplete.
- 2:28:53The Oilers will take over on down.
- 2:28:55Houston, an unbelievable comeback.
- 2:28:59Trailing 23 to nothing.
- 2:29:02They've won their last seven ball games, but they're in trouble right now.
- 2:29:06New England Patriots.
- 2:29:08And that's seven straight victories for New England equals the club all-time record for consecutive wins.
- 2:29:15But Houston will be breaking the string here.
- 2:29:17Congratulations from the head man himself with 144 left to go in the ball.
- 2:29:23Who do you think they're going to give that football to?
- 2:29:25Would it be number 34?
- 2:29:26I would predict.
- 2:29:28Now, Houston two timeouts remaining.
- 2:29:31New England has won.
- 2:29:33At the New England 33 yard line.
- 2:29:35He's not going to give that ball to anybody.
- 2:29:37He's going to keep it himself and fall on it.
- 2:29:44And New England will stop the clock.
- 2:29:48That is their last timeout.
- 2:29:52He cannot fall on it three more times.
- 2:29:55Change of possession the last one.
- 2:29:57Yes.
- 2:29:58New England will get the ball back.
- 2:30:00The clock stops and change of possession.
- 2:30:02And the rest of the game starts running a play.
- 2:30:07Now they're doing the same thing.
- 2:30:09He's doing the division.
- 2:30:11That's 90 seconds.
- 2:30:14And there's 101 left.
- 2:30:16So you're coming up 11 seconds short bomb if you fall on three straight times.
- 2:30:20And also, yes, that would be right.
- 2:30:27And the report that Ron Jaworski was hurt in the game in Philadelphia was carried off the field.
- 2:30:35And the pregame show talked about the quarterbacks going down.
- 2:30:39So that continues.
- 2:30:40What do you think about this is a former quarterback?
- 2:30:42Are there more quarterback injuries this year than you've seen in the past?
- 2:30:45Well, I'd say the last few years.
- 2:30:47I think synthetic turf has something to do with it.
- 2:30:49And the opposition has a great deal to do with it.
- 2:30:52The defensive men are so big and strong.
- 2:30:54They're talking about people like Robert Brazil runs a 4-5-40, weighs 230 pounds.
- 2:31:00And big defensive linemen out there.
- 2:31:02You see, on synthetic turf, straight ahead, you get great traction.
- 2:31:06So the collisions are going to be much greater than they were before.
- 2:31:10Plus the fact that these men are all on weight programs from junior high school on.
- 2:31:14They're much bigger and stronger than they were 15, 20 years ago.
- 2:31:18Also, I saw a survey on the increase in size of offensive linemen, defensive linemen, all defensive players.
- 2:31:23The only offensive player that has not grown in size is the quarterback over the last 20 years.
- 2:31:28Oh, I don't know. I put on a few pounds.
- 2:31:30Yes, but that's since you retired.
- 2:31:32It's the good living.
- 2:31:34Update on Earl Campbell.
- 2:31:36Today, 75 yards, season total, 945 yards.
- 2:31:40That means that next week with 55 more, he had reached the 1,000 mark.
- 2:31:44Houston will be hosting Miami next weekend.
- 2:31:46New England will be at the New York Jets.
- 2:31:48What a comeback by Houston in this football game.
- 2:31:51Really tremendous, which shows a lot of the character of what that football team is all about.
- 2:31:56Bum Phillips is the man, of course, that directs that football team.
- 2:32:07Snap coming with one second on the 32nd clock.
- 2:32:10That is the timer, time remaining.
- 2:32:12That's the timer, time remaining.
- 2:32:21It will be fourth down and 16.
- 2:32:23And New England will still have a possession.
- 2:32:27You look back, a lot of strange plays.
- 2:32:29One was that fake field goal that the shuffle passed forward,
- 2:32:33that came up with a big first down, that got them in and got some points and got a touchdown.
- 2:32:37The kicking game today, both sides, cozy hitting the goal post.
- 2:32:43On the shot, it was very makeable.
- 2:32:46Two extra points, never getting them off for Houston.
- 2:32:50And now we're in the situation of punting.
- 2:32:53And I'm sure that's going through the minds of the people down there,
- 2:32:55because going back to punt the football was 16 seconds remaining.
- 2:33:00And he's told, one thing is, get it off.
- 2:33:05Get that football off and they're telling the men up front,
- 2:33:07don't worry about the coverage.
- 2:33:09Just make sure you block and don't let anybody get through.
- 2:33:12Now you saw the clock stop was 16 seconds.
- 2:33:14That was the countdown on the 32nd clock that stopped him.
- 2:33:19parsley will be kicking.
- 2:33:21New England will have one more opportunity.
- 2:33:23They have no one back.
- 2:33:25A long shot, they're going for the block.
- 2:33:27Rushing 11-minute.
- 2:33:31He gets it off.
- 2:33:32It'll roll free.
- 2:33:36Into the end zone.
- 2:33:38Automatic touchback, seven seconds left in the ball game.
- 2:33:42And only James Bond 007 himself could save it right now for New England.
- 2:33:47All they can hope to do is put it up in the air
- 2:33:50and hope that somebody can come down with it
- 2:33:52or try to hit somebody in the middle out there someplace
- 2:33:55and hope that they get it by with the tackles.
- 2:33:57But you'll take a look at the defensive Houston when they line up for this.
- 2:34:01You may not be able to find the deep guys
- 2:34:03because they're going to be so deep
- 2:34:05they're always going to be in the locker room.
- 2:34:07You can give up anything you want on this
- 2:34:09except letting them get across the goal line
- 2:34:11because with seven seconds to go
- 2:34:13they can't run that far.
- 2:34:15I don't think in seven seconds.
- 2:34:17From the 20-yard line, 80 yards away, no timeouts.
- 2:34:34Brogan under pressure.
- 2:34:36He's got to throw it.
- 2:34:38Time is out.
- 2:34:40It is tipped.
- 2:34:41It is intercepted.
- 2:34:42Houston has the football.
- 2:34:44And sliding down is J.C. Wilson with the interception.
- 2:34:49Capping a fantastic comeback in the second half
- 2:34:53for the Houston Oilers
- 2:34:55as they stay in the picture for a wild card spot
- 2:34:58and a playoff position.
- 2:35:00Charlie, you said it half time and I agree with you
- 2:35:02that Houston played a miserable first half
- 2:35:04and at that time it didn't look like they really had a prayer
- 2:35:06of defeating the New England Patriots.
- 2:35:08The Patriots had everything under control.
- 2:35:10They were running with the football
- 2:35:12and no way they were supposed to win that ball game
- 2:35:15but they didn't know it.
- 2:35:16Final score, Houston 26, New England 23.
- 2:35:19This is Charlie Jones, Lynn Dawson,
- 2:35:21Solon from Schaefer Stadium in New England.
- 2:35:24The executive producer of today's game is Don Omeyer.
- 2:35:27The game was produced by Larry Cirillo,
- 2:35:29directed by Harry Coyle,
- 2:35:31technical director Arnold Rand,
- 2:35:33associate director Howard Bayer.
- 2:35:35Next Sunday it all starts, NFL 78
- 2:35:37with a pregame show featuring Jamie the Greek,
- 2:35:39NCAA and NFL scores and highlights.
- 2:35:41The game, 12-30 Eastern time, Buffalo Tampa Bay,
- 2:35:44New England the Jets, that starts it off.
