Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, I'm going to start this Thursday pod with an apology.
- 0:03Speaker 1: And this is totally unrelated to FPL, but I know
- 0:06Speaker 1: a lot of you guys that listen to this have
- 0:07Speaker 1: become rather invested in our often bonkers lives. It turns
- 0:11Speaker 1: out last week we recorded this podcast on Sam's birthday
- 0:14Speaker 1: and no one knew and no one said happy birthday.
- 0:16Speaker 1: And then I text Jules and he said, well, it
- 0:18Speaker 1: was my birthday a week or so ago and no
- 0:20Speaker 1: one said happy birthday to me. So happy birthday to
- 0:25Speaker 1: both of you. Sorry it's late. I'm the worst friend
- 0:27Speaker 1: co-host ever. But I just, I wrote down a note
- 0:30Speaker 1: to myself for this week. I must say it because
- 0:32Speaker 1: I felt terrible.
- 0:32Speaker 2: Don't worry, don't worry.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So let's find out if your birthday brought any FPL points, Sam.
- 0:39Speaker 3: It did. It was a good FPL week. So that
- 0:41Speaker 3: was positive. Yeah. A very good game week.
- 0:44Speaker 4: So 74 points and three points for Spurs. So, you know,
- 0:47Speaker 4: what couldn't have gone better in my birthday weekend than
- 0:49Speaker 4: Spurs winning and a decent FPL week. So yeah, a
- 0:52Speaker 4: nice big green arrow, which I was really happy about.
- 0:55Speaker 4: despite the fact that my midfield still seem to be
- 0:57Speaker 4: just dreadful. Like I can't get any points out of
- 1:00Speaker 4: them lately. It's just constant, apart from Pascal Gross, of course,
- 1:03Speaker 4: but then everyone's getting Pascal Gross's points. So that's less,
- 1:07Speaker 4: that's less exciting, but the defence doing really well again, obviously.
- 1:10Speaker 4: Verbruggen with, yeah, another clean sheet. So he's, he's looking
- 1:14Speaker 4: like a really good goalkeeper option. Konza and Calafuri both
- 1:17Speaker 4: coming in with a, with a clean sheet. Van Hecht,
- 1:19Speaker 4: despite no clean sheet, picked up the defensive contribution points again.
- 1:23Speaker 4: So he's been, bit of a breath of fresh air
- 1:25Speaker 4: at a time when you know my other defenders maybe
- 1:28Speaker 4: hadn't been so good recently uh calvert lewin though was
- 1:31Speaker 4: a was the big win because i think a lot
- 1:33Speaker 4: of people have been selling him recently so to have
- 1:35Speaker 4: kept him and got a nine pointer out of him
- 1:37Speaker 4: felt really good so yeah 74 a nice big green
- 1:40Speaker 4: arrow took me above george in the mini leagues that
- 1:42Speaker 4: also made me happy as well um yeah good weekend.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I made up some ground on Jules this week
- 1:46Speaker 1: and gosh, did I need to because I've had such
- 1:48Speaker 1: a poor start to the season. Like looking at my
- 1:50Speaker 1: rank compared to you two. I'm glad I had a
- 1:53Speaker 1: big climb this week, but when you're down where I am,
- 1:55Speaker 1: you need to have big climbs to ensure that it
- 1:57Speaker 1: doesn't get a bit messy. Jules, for you, it was
- 2:00Speaker 1: 60 points. And I think the big thing for me was,
- 2:03Speaker 1: is your luck running out with Guardiola?
- 2:05Speaker 2: I know.
- 2:07Speaker 5: And to be fair, we talked about rotation on last
- 2:09Speaker 5: week's show, the week before, which is fair. I just,
- 2:12Speaker 5: I was not sure it would come from there. And
- 2:15Speaker 5: to be fair, he'd come off the bench a few
- 2:18Speaker 5: times and getting some returns, which was a bit lucky
- 2:21Speaker 5: as well. Remember the assist for Schalke against Liverpool, for example,
- 2:25Speaker 5: where he was on the bench, came on and that
- 2:27Speaker 5: saved the day, really, but it was not sustainable. And
- 2:30Speaker 5: we often talk about that kind of thing, not being sustainable.
- 2:33Speaker 5: And that was the bad day, really, because Guardiola got
- 2:37Speaker 5: me zero points.
- 2:39Speaker 2: And that was bad.
- 2:40Speaker 5: And because my third forward was not Dominic Calvert-Lewin, that's
- 2:43Speaker 5: where the difference is between my 60 points and Sam's 74,
- 2:46Speaker 5: for example, because Johan Huysa, again, is only there because
- 2:50Speaker 5: he's Paris born and bred for one more week. But
- 2:52Speaker 5: that has to stop now. Even the Parisians have to,
- 2:56Speaker 5: because he's been dreadful. And so I've been Newcastle lately.
- 2:58Speaker 5: So he will have to go. And for the rest,
- 3:01Speaker 5: it's really the defence that is helping Calafiori, Konsa, Verbruggen,
- 3:05Speaker 5: plus the captaincy on Ireland.
- 3:06Speaker 2: But yeah, not a good week.
- 3:09Speaker 5: Although there was not much, again, it's just one player
- 3:11Speaker 5: that makes a difference in this case, really, in Dominic
- 3:13Speaker 5: Calveluin and the third forward that mine was not good
- 3:17Speaker 5: at all.
- 3:18Speaker 1: OK, then, Jules, before we go on to the FPL
- 3:20Speaker 1: Pub Mini League, just bring us up to speed on
- 3:23Speaker 1: kind of everything that's happened in Europe this week, because
- 3:25Speaker 1: actually there's some huge news when it comes to FPL.
- 3:30Speaker 5: Yeah, and really sad as well if you're on Bukayo Saka,
- 3:32Speaker 5: for example, and we talked a lot again in recent
- 3:35Speaker 5: shows about Odegaard, Saka and what you do with your
- 3:37Speaker 5: midfield and we'll do again later today on the show.
- 3:40Speaker 5: But he picked up what looks like a quad injury
- 3:43Speaker 5: on a simple pass against Bayern Munich quite early on
- 3:45Speaker 5: and that didn't look good at all. We don't know
- 3:47Speaker 5: yet exactly the severity of it, but you would think it's.
- 3:50Speaker 2: More weeks than days, really.
- 3:53Speaker 5: With Bukayo Saka, Arsenal got a good 2-2 draw away
- 3:55Speaker 5: at Bayern though with a great goal by Declan Rice
- 3:57Speaker 5: and a great goal by Ebrard Chiesi, who will become,
- 4:00Speaker 5: like Maduike, much more important in the absence of Solis
- 4:03Speaker 5: and Saka now, especially for the game against Everton on Saturday.
- 4:07Speaker 5: Another nightmare of a night for Manchester United. If you're
- 4:10Speaker 5: all United players, if you are United fans, you don't
- 4:13Speaker 5: want to listen to this because it was an absolute shambles.
- 4:15Speaker 5: They lost 4-1 at Como. It could have been 6-7 easily.
- 4:18Speaker 5: What a mess. They've got loads of injuries and then
- 4:23Speaker 5: imploded by Bruno, clearly having a go at Carrick, who
- 4:26Speaker 5: then responded.
- 4:27Speaker 2: It's just Feels like very toxic at the moment.
- 4:30Speaker 5: Manchester City at the Stroll in the park against AK Aten,
- 4:33Speaker 5: which you would expect 5-1 win. Hat-trick for Foden, a
- 4:36Speaker 5: bit of shirky magic as well. More rotation with Haaland
- 4:40Speaker 5: on the bench, for example, and rested through the whole game.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Liverpool 4-3 win at home to Villarreal, although they were
- 4:45Speaker 5: 2-0 down. But a good cameo entrance for Vils, who
- 4:48Speaker 5: scored again and seems to be on good form. McAllister
- 4:50Speaker 5: with a brace as well. And Rio and Gomuha with
- 4:53Speaker 5: a wonderful performance. And then finally, Aston Villa against Viking
- 4:56Speaker 5: from nowhere. Easy win, 3-1 rotation. We saw another goal
- 5:01Speaker 5: for Buendia. Alisson being very good. No Manzambi, though, who
- 5:04Speaker 5: picked up an injury. And that's a bit of a blow,
- 5:06Speaker 5: I think, if you own him. And for Aston Villa
- 5:08Speaker 5: for the game against City at the weekend, if he
- 5:10Speaker 5: can't play.
- 5:11Speaker 1: OK, we'll come on to some of those points. kind
- 5:14Speaker 1: of talk about them a little bit more very shortly
- 5:16Speaker 1: because I know, for example, Bukayo Saka is a huge
- 5:18Speaker 1: talking point after last night. But I'm just going to
- 5:21Speaker 1: check in with the FPL Pod Mini League as promised.
- 5:23Speaker 1: And Nils fell to second last week, but he's back
- 5:26Speaker 1: on top with 97 points because he had his triple.
- 5:29Speaker 3: Captain, which he used on Erling Haaland.
- 5:31Speaker 1: He also transferred him in this week as well. So
- 5:33Speaker 1: a very smart move. He also sold Bruno Fernandes for
- 5:37Speaker 1: Redoni and got a goal from him.
- 5:39Speaker 3: So that went well.
- 5:40Speaker 1: Ra Gray is up into second with 90 points. Also
- 5:43Speaker 1: brought in Manzambi for Sposly. That was Jules just said
- 5:46Speaker 1: then he could have a bit of a headache last week.
- 5:48Speaker 3: This week, sorry.
- 5:49Speaker 1: Alex Dawson was top last week. He slipped to third
- 5:52Speaker 1: with 68 points. There are just 17 points between the
- 5:55Speaker 1: top three. Also a shout out to Connor Clark, who
- 5:57Speaker 1: went from 48th up to fourth in our league. He
- 6:00Speaker 1: got 99 points for the week. Triple caps in Harland.
- 6:03Speaker 1: And he also put in Shirky, who didn't feature at all.
- 6:05Speaker 1: So it could have been even better.
- 6:07Speaker 3: So proof there.
- 6:07Speaker 1: It's never too late. to give up on these leagues. Like,
- 6:10Speaker 1: don't give up because going from fourth to 48th is staggering.
- 6:13Speaker 1: And if you haven't joined us yet, the code is Q0HV1Q. Right,
- 6:18Speaker 1: there is so much for us to reflect on because,
- 6:21Speaker 1: as we just said, then there's loads that's happened in Europe,
- 6:23Speaker 1: but also game week seven. So let's try and get
- 6:25Speaker 1: through some of it. In terms of Brighton, I think
- 6:29Speaker 1: it's just rinse and repeat from what we said last week, Sam.
- 6:33Speaker 3: They're so good at the moment, aren't they?
- 6:34Speaker 1: The only thing is their fixtures.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Their fixtures now are trickier.
- 6:37Speaker 1: A trickier but they almost feel like you know we
- 6:40Speaker 1: put some sorry to ask you a question then answer
- 6:42Speaker 1: the question but you know like certain teams we say
- 6:44Speaker 1: are fixture proof I'm almost wondering if we're now in
- 6:47Speaker 1: that watch them lose this week but are we in
- 6:50Speaker 1: that kind of territory now with Brighton.
- 6:52Speaker 4: I think so and I think even when you look
- 6:54Speaker 4: at the fixtures that they have coming up like it's
- 6:56Speaker 4: not it's not like Liverpool aren't conceding goals it's not
- 6:59Speaker 4: like they don't have you know, the opportunity to score.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Maybe the defenders won't be quite so good this week
- 7:03Speaker 4: against Liverpool because I would expect Liverpool to score. But still,
- 7:06Speaker 4: I think there's still plenty of potential if you've got,
- 7:09Speaker 4: you know, Kostulas or if you've got Gross, even if
- 7:11Speaker 4: you've got De Kalper, given how attacking he's been. Would
- 7:14Speaker 4: I really want to be playing Verbruggen this week?
- 7:17Speaker 2: Well, maybe not.
- 7:17Speaker 4: But then I've got Kinski who's got Chelsea, so I'll
- 7:20Speaker 4: probably play Verbruggen and hope for some save points. But yeah,
- 7:24Speaker 4: I started to think that they are. Like, there's no
- 7:26Speaker 4: part of me that thinks, oh, I want to get
- 7:28Speaker 4: rid of my Brighton players. And even when I'm looking
- 7:30Speaker 4: at my team, there's no part of me that thinks
- 7:32Speaker 4: I want to bench them either. I think if you
- 7:33Speaker 4: have them.
- 7:34Speaker 1: Trust me, don't bench them.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Particularly the outfielders, you play them. No, exactly.
- 7:38Speaker 5: And even if you're not too sure, you go for
- 7:41Speaker 5: it anyway and you have to gamble. When you're in
- 7:44Speaker 5: that kind of form, when you score from the halfway line,
- 7:46Speaker 5: when just everything goes your way, it will stop at
- 7:49Speaker 5: some point, obviously. But for now, you go for it
- 7:53Speaker 5: and it could well be the right gamble because it
- 7:56Speaker 5: could work out certainly against Liverpool, I don't know if
- 7:59Speaker 5: then you play City back-to-back because they have them in
- 8:01Speaker 5: the League Cup as well. That might be a little
- 8:02Speaker 5: bit too much, but you just never know. When you're
- 8:04Speaker 5: in that kind of confidence and in that kind of
- 8:06Speaker 5: mode where you must feel unplayable, invincible almost if you're
- 8:10Speaker 5: this Brighton team right now, which is fair to them.
- 8:13Speaker 5: They've been so good. We should really try to take
- 8:16Speaker 5: advantage of it.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Do we apply the same rule with attackers, like Pascal Gross,
- 8:20Speaker 1: because I know so many of us have him, to
- 8:22Speaker 1: the defenders? Because I joked about it there with De Kuyper.
- 8:25Speaker 1: I mentioned it the other week and I learned I
- 8:26Speaker 1: won't be benching him just because I'm absolutely scarred from that.
- 8:30Speaker 1: But I have seen, Sam, a lot of people having
- 8:32Speaker 1: conundrums as to they might have a lot of good
- 8:34Speaker 1: defenders and obviously defenders are returning well at the moment.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Do you still play a De Kuyper?
- 8:42Speaker 3: I think you probably do with him.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I actually think it's slightly different for each of
- 8:47Speaker 4: those two because obviously De Kuyper's got the potential for
- 8:50Speaker 4: an attacking return at every and any given opportunity it
- 8:54Speaker 4: feels like right now.
- 8:55Speaker 3: Vuskovic is not that he doesn't.
- 8:57Speaker 4: But he's less attacking because his threat is mostly from
- 8:59Speaker 4: set pieces, right? So, um, and an aerial threat. Um,
- 9:03Speaker 4: so I think, I think if you've got DiCaprio, I
- 9:07Speaker 4: would just play him anyway, regardless of these two fixtures
- 9:09Speaker 4: and hope for an attacking return. In addition to, to
- 9:12Speaker 4: maybe there's an, there's a clean sheet that comes at
- 9:14Speaker 4: some point. Vuskovic, if you've got a couple of Arsenal defenders,
- 9:19Speaker 4: if you've got other defenders that you want to play,
- 9:21Speaker 4: like you might find that you've got, um, some of
- 9:24Speaker 4: your very cheap defenders that over the next couple of
- 9:26Speaker 4: weeks have some quite nice fixtures and you want to
- 9:28Speaker 4: play them as well, then maybe you could bench him.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Okay.
- 9:34Speaker 1: So Brighton covered off. Man City rotation. This is tricky.
- 9:38Speaker 1: And I thought this, that all the warning bells were
- 9:40Speaker 1: there last week in terms of Shirky. Most transferred in,
- 9:43Speaker 1: loads of people bringing him in. Brilliant fixture. I mean,
- 9:46Speaker 1: it's unlucky, isn't it, Jules? But it's something we know
- 9:49Speaker 1: that's going to happen with City. Firstly, what do you
- 9:51Speaker 1: do if you're a Shirky owner?
- 9:54Speaker 2: So the good news, I think, in a way, and
- 9:56Speaker 2: it's sad for Semenya.
- 9:58Speaker 3: Himself who picked up that.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Injury, but it's true.
- 10:00Speaker 5: Now that means at least there's one less option for
- 10:04Speaker 5: Maresca to play and to rotate with Semenya. We think
- 10:07Speaker 5: probably around six to eight weeks or it looks that way, certainly.
- 10:12Speaker 5: So that means you could play Foden wide a bit
- 10:15Speaker 5: like we saw against A.K.A. Athens in the Champions League
- 10:17Speaker 5: where both Foden and Schalke were played together in this team,
- 10:21Speaker 5: Alan being the other kind of wide attacker with Floyd Samba,
- 10:25Speaker 5: the youngster up front. At least there's one less of
- 10:29Speaker 5: an issue there for that rotation, but it's inevitable. They
- 10:33Speaker 5: play a lot of games, they play quite an intense
- 10:35Speaker 5: style of football, obviously. They have big games coming up.
- 10:38Speaker 5: We mentioned, I think, their schedule, but they have the
- 10:41Speaker 5: Champions League, they have still the League Cup, they've got
- 10:43Speaker 5: the league and also everything else that is happening around
- 10:46Speaker 5: the club, obviously. So, you think that Maresca will continue
- 10:50Speaker 5: doing that. They also have data that we don't have
- 10:54Speaker 5: on players' fitness and where they are and where their
- 10:57Speaker 5: muscles are. And maybe that will also dictate, OK, he
- 11:00Speaker 5: can't start. He can maybe only play a few minutes
- 11:03Speaker 5: if need be and things like that. So right now,
- 11:06Speaker 5: I think of all the Premier League teams, I think
- 11:09Speaker 5: they're the ones that seem to be on this kind
- 11:12Speaker 5: of more rotation plan, if you want, maybe more than
- 11:16Speaker 5: than others, so there's something to bear in mind for
- 11:18Speaker 5: sure if you've got Schalke, if you want Foden, which
- 11:22Speaker 5: is in great form after the hat-trick in midweek, or
- 11:25Speaker 5: even for me, the Gvardiol slash O'Reilly left-back conundrum, because undoubtedly,
- 11:30Speaker 5: I think those two will keep being rotated.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Sam, what would you do if you owned those City players?
- 11:36Speaker 1: I think Jules makes a really valid point there about
- 11:37Speaker 1: the Semenya injury, as bad as it is, because he's
- 11:39Speaker 1: a wonderful player and maybe helps things a little.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it maybe gives a little bit more
- 11:44Speaker 4: security to Cherky owners who will be, maybe they'll feel
- 11:48Speaker 4: a little bit relieved about that given that he was
- 11:50Speaker 4: so popular last week as a transfer in. So to
- 11:53Speaker 4: not see him get any minutes at all, I think
- 11:55Speaker 4: is disappointing because I think that's the thing, isn't it?
- 11:57Speaker 4: With a lot of Man City rotation, we've seen them
- 11:59Speaker 4: come off the bench and they can easily get some
- 12:01Speaker 4: returns in 20 minutes, 30 minutes off of a bench.
- 12:04Speaker 4: But when you don't see them come on at all,
- 12:06Speaker 4: I mean, it can work in one of two ways, right?
- 12:08Speaker 4: Because you either get, sometimes it's The one-point cameos are
- 12:11Speaker 4: really frustrating, but also if you've not got anyone on
- 12:13Speaker 4: your bench to come on, that's been a bit of
- 12:16Speaker 4: a difficult one this week. But I think if you've invested,
- 12:18Speaker 4: you probably hold, especially over the next couple of weeks
- 12:22Speaker 4: whilst Semenya is out, so that hopefully you get some
- 12:25Speaker 4: returns out of the player that you chose to invest
- 12:27Speaker 4: in for a reason. And Cherki had been good up
- 12:29Speaker 4: until that benching.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Okay then, let's actually pause. I wish we used to it.
- 12:35Speaker 1: I wish we edited this podcast still because I've just
- 12:37Speaker 1: stumbled there. But let's go to Newcastle. I was going
- 12:40Speaker 1: to go on to injuries, but I think we probably
- 12:42Speaker 1: do need a word on Newcastle because, Jules, you mentioned it.
- 12:46Speaker 1: People still will own Whistler. I nearly bought in Barnes
- 12:49Speaker 1: on my wild card. The conundrum, I have got Lewis Hall,
- 12:52Speaker 1: who got DEFCON at least. They've got Palace up next.
- 12:56Speaker 1: So a lot of people are saying I want to
- 12:57Speaker 1: sell them, but Palace themselves haven't been in great form.
- 12:59Speaker 3: Do you wait a week?
- 13:02Speaker 5: But then we've been saying that because they played Coventry.
- 13:04Speaker 5: We said, oh, let's wait a week. And then they
- 13:05Speaker 5: were back at home against Villa, which was not an
- 13:07Speaker 5: easy game. But we said, OK, they are home and
- 13:09Speaker 5: they need to bounce back from being humiliated by Coventry
- 13:13Speaker 5: the Monday before that. And then they were probably even
- 13:17Speaker 5: worse than they were the week before. And now they
- 13:21Speaker 5: play away at Palace, away at Everton on back-to-back games,
- 13:24Speaker 5: one in the league, obviously one in the League Cup.
- 13:28Speaker 5: But I just, I don't know, right now I watch
- 13:31Speaker 5: them and there's just nothing in that game that makes
- 13:34Speaker 5: me believe that, yeah, you could give Ruiz another week
- 13:36Speaker 5: or you could give Barnes another week or you could give,
- 13:40Speaker 5: you know, I don't know, Fernandes-Pardo, I don't know what
- 13:41Speaker 5: you would have him, or Luis Hall, you know, Hornacek,
- 13:44Speaker 5: I don't know, whoever you chose.
- 13:45Speaker 1: Luis Hall at least gets DEFCON, I would say.
- 13:47Speaker 3: He gets DEFCON.
- 13:48Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's the hope that you could have because
- 13:51Speaker 5: for the rest, it's just nothing. And I think it's
- 13:53Speaker 5: tough and I think it's tough for Yasler. there's no
- 13:55Speaker 5: plan B, there's no plan C and it's tough. And
- 13:59Speaker 5: I think you're right, Palace are not great and you
- 14:01Speaker 5: could see Newcastle maybe getting somewhere there, but you could
- 14:04Speaker 5: also see them being bad again for a third week.
- 14:07Speaker 2: In a row.
- 14:08Speaker 1: Okay, I've wanted to get on to the injuries for
- 14:10Speaker 1: ages just because I think they're so topical at the moment.
- 14:13Speaker 1: So let's rattle through some of them. The ones that
- 14:14Speaker 1: we firstly found out about last week, we kind of
- 14:17Speaker 1: knew Sabozlai was a problem and then Sam, I think
- 14:19Speaker 1: the problem just intensified with the way he kind of
- 14:23Speaker 1: started and then came off.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Yeah, it was really frustrating. So I benched him this
- 14:27Speaker 4: week thinking that he wasn't going to play. He did
- 14:31Speaker 4: end up starting him and then he started the game
- 14:33Speaker 4: well and he was on Defcon bandwagon quite early. And
- 14:36Speaker 4: I was thinking, oh, this is probably going to end
- 14:39Speaker 4: in disaster benching him. But then obviously went off again injured.
- 14:43Speaker 4: So now becomes an easy sell. I think if you
- 14:45Speaker 4: did hold him, a bit like Semenya, you can move
- 14:49Speaker 4: him uncomfortably. He'll be my transfer out this week, or
- 14:51Speaker 4: one of them now, because now I've got a sack
- 14:53Speaker 4: of shape problem to deal with as well, which I
- 14:55Speaker 4: wasn't anticipating having to deal with.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Okay, so Semenya we've already established. We think he's going
- 14:59Speaker 1: to be out a while. So his price point in particular,
- 15:01Speaker 1: he would be a sell. Manzambi, I'm sure, will have
- 15:04Speaker 1: had lots of interest. And if you look at Villa's
- 15:07Speaker 1: fixtures after City, I would love to bring him in.
- 15:10Speaker 1: So I think if potentially we get good news after that,
- 15:13Speaker 1: I think you can probably afford to wait. Morgan Gibbs-White,
- 15:16Speaker 1: what's the latest.
- 15:16Speaker 2: On him, Jules? I don't know. I was surprised.
- 15:20Speaker 5: I have to say, I didn't know that he was
- 15:23Speaker 5: that full for the game against Arsenal. And we saw, obviously,
- 15:28Speaker 5: that without him, it's not the same. So it's one
- 15:32Speaker 5: to keep an eye on because, as we said, if
- 15:34Speaker 5: you wanted a Forest player, he was obviously the one,
- 15:36Speaker 5: like last season, to invest in, even if they had
- 15:40Speaker 5: had a shaky start of the season under Glasner. But now, yeah,
- 15:44Speaker 5: that injury is bad for him. It's bad for us
- 15:47Speaker 5: in FPL.
- 15:47Speaker 1: I've just checked, Jules. Oliver Glasner's confirmed that he is
- 15:51Speaker 1: available this weekend.
- 15:51Speaker 3: Been back in training, yeah.
- 15:53Speaker 5: So he looked like he was not too serious. So
- 15:55Speaker 5: he's back on. At least he's not like a Semenyo.
- 15:59Speaker 5: And I think Manzambi, hopefully, might not be too serious either.
- 16:03Speaker 1: Yeah, but if Manzambi is fit, would you still not
- 16:06Speaker 1: wait a week?
- 16:08Speaker 2: If he's fit or not fit? If he's fit.
- 16:10Speaker 1: If Simon Zambi's past fit, I don't think this will happen,
- 16:13Speaker 1: but say Unai Emery says, yes, he's fit, would you
- 16:16Speaker 1: bring him in this week?
- 16:18Speaker 2: I would have brought him in last week.
- 16:19Speaker 5: And obviously it was my differential and I thought he
- 16:21Speaker 5: was outstanding. The fact that he got rest in midweek
- 16:24Speaker 5: because Viking, you didn't have to play him anywhere.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I think he can hurt City.
- 16:27Speaker 5: I think this Villa team at home could really, really
- 16:30Speaker 5: make the game very difficult for City. And if they do,
- 16:33Speaker 5: or if they did, then I think he'll be at
- 16:36Speaker 5: the heart of everything. So I would bring Monzambi now
- 16:39Speaker 5: if Unai Emery says he's fit and if you can
- 16:42Speaker 5: afford it, I think he's a great, great option in
- 16:44Speaker 5: any midfield right now.
- 16:45Speaker 3: Come on then, Sam.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Let's discuss Bukayo Saka because that was a huge blow
- 16:51Speaker 1: last night, wasn't it? I mean, I only sat here
- 16:53Speaker 1: last week and declared myself as the chairperson of the
- 16:56Speaker 1: Bukayo Saka fan club. As we know, I was desperate
- 16:58Speaker 1: to bring him in on my wildcard. He's not returned
- 17:01Speaker 1: really since coming into my team on that wildcard, but
- 17:04Speaker 1: I could see the points coming. I felt they were coming.
- 17:06Speaker 1: He looked like he was in good form. It's a
- 17:08Speaker 1: huge blow to Arsenal and it's a huge blow to
- 17:10Speaker 1: his increasing number of managers in FPL because people were
- 17:14Speaker 1: starting to look at him, particularly given the form of
- 17:16Speaker 1: some of the other premiums.
- 17:18Speaker 3: For sure.
- 17:19Speaker 4: I sat down last night before the game and wrote
- 17:21Speaker 4: my notes for this podcast. And I wrote loads on Saka,
- 17:25Speaker 4: most goals in the Arsenal team this season in the league,
- 17:27Speaker 4: most shots with 17, most big chances with 7, third
- 17:29Speaker 4: most chances created with 10, biggest shot share in the
- 17:32Speaker 4: Arsenal team when he's on the pitch with 22.
- 17:35Speaker 3: I could go on and on and on.
- 17:35Speaker 4: Don't depress us.
- 17:36Speaker 3: It's a very long list.
- 17:37Speaker 4: And then I sat down to watch the game and
- 17:40Speaker 4: obviously watched him go off injured and thought, right, well
- 17:42Speaker 4: now not only is that obviously disappointing because I've just
- 17:47Speaker 4: brought him in last week. Now I've got a problem
- 17:51Speaker 4: that I've got to deal with. So those two free
- 17:52Speaker 4: transfers that I thought I was just going to be
- 17:54Speaker 4: using one to deal with, so Bosley, I'm now going
- 17:57Speaker 4: to have to deal with.
- 17:59Speaker 3: Saka as well. So yeah, really.
- 18:01Speaker 4: frustrating and a lot of managers over the last couple
- 18:04Speaker 4: of weeks have gone to Saka so that I guess
- 18:05Speaker 4: the big question with him now is do you stick
- 18:07Speaker 4: with an Arsenal player and go for a Madawake or
- 18:10Speaker 4: an Eze or an Odegaard instead or even Rice who's
- 18:13Speaker 4: suddenly kind of back to that point where we were
- 18:15Speaker 4: picking him a couple of years ago or do you
- 18:18Speaker 4: look outside of Arsenal for somebody different instead I think
- 18:22Speaker 4: that's where the decisions that a lot of managers will
- 18:24Speaker 4: be making now rather than if you keep him.
- 18:26Speaker 1: Jules could you go somewhere else at Arsenal?
- 18:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I think Odegaard, maybe even if he's formed, it's
- 18:31Speaker 5: not that the form has dipped, it's just the way
- 18:34Speaker 5: they have been playing lately, he was more needed for
- 18:37Speaker 5: something a little bit different than the role he had
- 18:39Speaker 5: earlier in the season where he was more creative, playing
- 18:42Speaker 5: higher up on the pitch, scoring, assisting in Europe, in
- 18:47Speaker 5: the league and all of that. His output is a
- 18:49Speaker 5: little bit different now. And I think that for us
- 18:52Speaker 5: is hurting if you have him in FPL like I do, because...
- 18:56Speaker 5: I just don't think he's the answer for our game
- 18:58Speaker 5: because he will have good games but in a very
- 19:00Speaker 5: different role. And that role doesn't bring you points and returns.
- 19:03Speaker 5: So it's a two-pointer, it's a three-pointer maybe if they
- 19:07Speaker 5: don't concede, obviously.
- 19:08Speaker 2: And that's it at the moment.
- 19:10Speaker 5: So I don't know if it's good enough for people
- 19:14Speaker 5: who don't have Martin Odegaard to just go there as
- 19:17Speaker 5: a replacement to Saka when the midfield options, even if
- 19:20Speaker 5: they're not all great, and Sam mentioned I think a
- 19:22Speaker 5: lot of us struggle with where are the points coming
- 19:24Speaker 5: from for our midfields, but I'm just not sure right now.
- 19:27Speaker 5: If you have him like me, probably keep him, certainly
- 19:29Speaker 5: a home game against Everton, you want to see that,
- 19:32Speaker 5: but I don't think I would invest in him right now.
- 19:35Speaker 1: Okay, so if you're not looking at Arsenal, Sam, what
- 19:37Speaker 1: are the best other options?
- 19:41Speaker 2: Well, Manzambi. Certainly not Bruno Fernandes, certainly not.
- 19:43Speaker 1: Well, I was going to say, you're almost not looking
- 19:45Speaker 1: in the premium pool at the moment, are you?
- 19:47Speaker 4: Well, I think that's the problem, isn't it? Is that
- 19:49Speaker 4: the premiums are a bit of an issue. Like apart
- 19:51Speaker 4: from Haaland, obviously you just have him and enjoy the
- 19:54Speaker 4: points that come. But all of the others have been
- 19:57Speaker 4: so inconsistent. Like Bruno Fernandes. So you look at the
- 20:01Speaker 4: underlying data for him and it would suggest that you invest.
- 20:05Speaker 4: So he's had 23 shots so far this season. Only
- 20:07Speaker 4: MBMO has had more with 24. He's had four big chances.
- 20:10Speaker 4: Only five midfielders have had more than that. But those
- 20:13Speaker 4: five midfielders that have had more range between 2.2 and 6.9
- 20:18Speaker 4: million cheaper than he is. He's created 16 chances. Only
- 20:21Speaker 4: four midfielders can better that. But then only one of
- 20:23Speaker 4: them has actually been a big chance. And he's had
- 20:26Speaker 4: nothing since game week two. We had that absolutely huge
- 20:29Speaker 4: haul in game week two. And then absolutely nothing ever since.
- 20:32Speaker 4: And when you look at the fixtures that they have
- 20:34Speaker 4: coming up, starting this week against Bournemouth, Bournemouth, Chelsea, Villa, Liverpool, Brentford,
- 20:40Speaker 4: that doesn't feel like an invested point for Manchester United
- 20:45Speaker 4: and certainly not for Bruno.
- 20:46Speaker 3: So you're definitely not going to go there. Would you
- 20:49Speaker 3: go for Cole Palmer?
- 20:52Speaker 5: Maybe.
- 20:53Speaker 4: I think there's a lot of really good value for
- 20:55Speaker 4: money picks in the cheaper midfielder slots that I would
- 20:57Speaker 4: go to instead.
- 20:58Speaker 1: Jules, who would you go to? You obviously don't have
- 21:00Speaker 1: this Saka conundrum because you're an Odegaard owner.
- 21:03Speaker 5: No, but I've got the Bruno one. And to be fair,
- 21:05Speaker 5: I've had enough of Bruno. I've had enough of Manchester United,
- 21:08Speaker 5: who are shambles, as we said earlier. I know I
- 21:11Speaker 5: hear what Sam is saying. And it's true if you
- 21:13Speaker 5: look at the data or the stats for Bruno. But
- 21:17Speaker 5: there's also what you see with your eye. And this
- 21:20Speaker 5: team is not functioning full stop. You know, it's just
- 21:22Speaker 5: not working. It's just not happening for them. And so
- 21:26Speaker 5: Bruno has to go. But then Cole Palmer, would you
- 21:30Speaker 5: have Rodgers and Palmer and Pedro? And some do have
- 21:33Speaker 5: the three Chelsea forwards. But then it's Neto who scored
- 21:37Speaker 5: two goals against Everton. And those three just bring you nothing.
- 21:41Speaker 5: I like Manzambi for sure. I don't.
- 21:47Speaker 2: Know.
- 21:47Speaker 5: I would love Cole Palmer because I think, again, if
- 21:49Speaker 5: you look at the Cole Palmer stats, not just the
- 21:52Speaker 5: two assists in the last four, but he creates big.
- 21:55Speaker 2: Chances and.
- 21:58Speaker 5: He's just such an instinct player that he can make
- 22:04Speaker 5: something happen from nothing. I'm not sure that's the case
- 22:07Speaker 5: with the Rodgers, for example, who is a completely different
- 22:10Speaker 5: style of player. So I wouldn't mind Cole Palmer, but
- 22:13Speaker 5: I'm not sure if I would rather keep some money
- 22:16Speaker 5: in and downgrade from Bruno to somebody cheaper, but in
- 22:20Speaker 5: better form, in a better team, and go from there
- 22:23Speaker 5: more than just go from a premium like Bruno to
- 22:25Speaker 5: another premium like Colpalma when I already have Rodgers and
- 22:27Speaker 5: Joao Pedro.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yeah, I think it depends if you have Rodgers and
- 22:31Speaker 1: Joao Pedro, doesn't it? I think Sam, because for me,
- 22:33Speaker 1: I'd happily go to Colpalma, but I have the other two.
- 22:36Speaker 1: So I just, I just don't know what to do,
- 22:38Speaker 1: but also it's a really weird, and I think we've
- 22:40Speaker 1: spoken about it this season a few times, but it's
- 22:42Speaker 1: a really weird season. Like I don't dislike my squad.
- 22:45Speaker 1: I know it's not done the best, but since wildcard,
- 22:47Speaker 1: I've still got 1.2 million in the bank already. And
- 22:50Speaker 1: I'm now at a point where I, so I kind
- 22:52Speaker 1: of feel like, oh, maybe I should just bring in
- 22:55Speaker 1: Cole Palmer because I've got the money. Although actually I
- 23:00Speaker 1: probably haven't quite got, I don't know if I actually
- 23:02Speaker 1: quite got the money. I haven't tried to do it,
- 23:03Speaker 1: but I've got four free transfers this week as well.
- 23:06Speaker 1: So yeah, it's, but it's like, what do you do?
- 23:09Speaker 1: And it just feels like the pool of players, it's
- 23:11Speaker 1: all about the cheaper ones, which I guess we shouldn't
- 23:13Speaker 1: moan about. Oh yeah, of course I've got enough money
- 23:14Speaker 1: to do Cole Palmer. I can do Cole Palmer and
- 23:16Speaker 1: still have a million in the bank.
- 23:19Speaker 4: Cause it's, it's such a, honestly, it's such a weird season,
- 23:21Speaker 4: isn't it for that? Because so I've got 2.8 million
- 23:24Speaker 4: in my bank at the moment and I'm thinking about
- 23:26Speaker 4: selling Bakayo Saka for Tavernier. So I'm going to end
- 23:29Speaker 4: up with like nearly 5 million in the bank when
- 23:32Speaker 4: I do that transfer. Um, and I'm at a point
- 23:35Speaker 4: where like money is not, money is not an issue.
- 23:38Speaker 4: Cole Palmer could come in. I could do the Saka
- 23:41Speaker 4: and Tavernier and Cole and still get Cole Palmer as
- 23:43Speaker 4: part of my Subozai movie. It still works financially. Um,
- 23:46Speaker 4: But the big question for me is, do I actually
- 23:48Speaker 4: want to spend the money on the premiums this year?
- 23:50Speaker 4: Because like you, I already have Jal Pedro and Morgan Rodgers.
- 23:54Speaker 4: Do I want to treble up on Chelsea? I mean,
- 23:58Speaker 4: they are very attacking.
- 23:59Speaker 3: They are in very good form.
- 24:03Speaker 4: But equally, I feel like three attackers is always, it's
- 24:07Speaker 4: too much. In my view, I always feel like it's
- 24:10Speaker 4: too much to have three attackers from one team because
- 24:12Speaker 4: if they have an off day, a bit like they
- 24:14Speaker 4: did against Everton, actually Chelsea didn't have an off day,
- 24:16Speaker 4: but they did, you're left disappointed. And it's really hard
- 24:20Speaker 4: to recover in a game week when you have three
- 24:22Speaker 4: players from the same team, if they don't then go
- 24:24Speaker 4: and get something because your whole game week is hinged
- 24:27Speaker 4: on them doing something. It was the same when you
- 24:30Speaker 4: invest in a double up defensively, like it's not so bad,
- 24:33Speaker 4: the double up, but if you'd go the treble up,
- 24:36Speaker 4: your whole game week is hinged on that team, keeping
- 24:38Speaker 4: a clean sheet, because if they don't, you're struggling from
- 24:40Speaker 4: the outset. So, I really struggle with the idea of
- 24:44Speaker 4: bringing Cole Palmer in as well as Morgan Rogers and
- 24:46Speaker 4: Jao Pedro because it feels very much like I am
- 24:50Speaker 4: too heavily invested in a Chelsea attack then and I
- 24:53Speaker 4: would rather spread the love a little bit across the
- 24:55Speaker 4: rest of my team. And I also think that I'm
- 24:57Speaker 4: only really looking at the Palmer thing because I have
- 25:01Speaker 4: this unlimited budget where I can afford it.
- 25:06Speaker 5: Three, I think is just too many. It's different when
- 25:09Speaker 5: you double up with defenders because it's just, The clean
- 25:12Speaker 5: sheet brings them points, even if they're rubbish in the
- 25:15Speaker 5: game and can make a lot of mistakes. But somehow
- 25:17Speaker 5: they don't concede and they get those six pointers. The
- 25:20Speaker 5: three up front, if Chelsea win 3-0 and they don't
- 25:24Speaker 5: do anything, they just don't get anything, obviously. So I
- 25:26Speaker 5: think it's really too risky, as we saw at the weekend.
- 25:30Speaker 5: You would have been fuming if you had the three
- 25:31Speaker 5: against Everton and neither of them returned.
- 25:34Speaker 1: OK, so I think we're basically saying if you've got Saka,
- 25:37Speaker 1: I mean, the only news we've had is Arteta post-match
- 25:39Speaker 1: last night and he said it doesn't look good. It
- 25:41Speaker 1: looks like it's his quad. So, I mean, he wasn't hopeful.
- 25:44Speaker 1: He will speak again on Friday, so maybe worth holding
- 25:47Speaker 1: out till then. But yeah, it doesn't sound like he's
- 25:50Speaker 1: going to be around at the weekend, does it? So
- 25:52Speaker 1: let's see. Fernandes, are we saying, given what happened last night,
- 25:57Speaker 1: he's a sell? Because we've been saying for weeks, haven't we,
- 25:59Speaker 1: that he's probably a sell?
- 26:01Speaker 5: 100%.
- 26:01Speaker 2: Even with a discount, I give it back to FPL.
- 26:03Speaker 2: It's okay. I take a hit.
- 26:06Speaker 3: You've been very patient with him, Jules.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Too far, too patient. But then you just may have
- 26:09Speaker 2: got a big heart.
- 26:11Speaker 5: But it's frustrating because it's not that I didn't see
- 26:17Speaker 5: it coming. It's what we said earlier, Cale. It's about,
- 26:20Speaker 5: I could give him another week. And you find a
- 26:23Speaker 5: reason in your head. Either they're back at home or
- 26:26Speaker 5: they play against a team that.
- 26:27Speaker 2: They should beat. And if they beat them, then he
- 26:29Speaker 2: should do well. That kind of stuff.
- 26:31Speaker 5: As we know, because we've been playing this game for
- 26:33Speaker 5: so long, it doesn't work like that. And yeah, I
- 26:37Speaker 5: should have got rid of him a long time ago,
- 26:39Speaker 5: but it's the right, it's going to happen now. Okay.
- 26:42Speaker 1: So we're saying Saka and Fernandes probably, probably sells and
- 26:46Speaker 1: Parma is a potential buy given what happened to Saka,
- 26:51Speaker 1: but dependent on the rest of your Chelsea lineup. Just
- 26:54Speaker 1: a word on Alexander Isak as well, because I don't
- 26:56Speaker 1: think we expected him back in game week seven, Sam.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I'm wondering if maybe we could use some of our
- 27:00Speaker 1: Bakayo Saka funds to upgrade a forward slot. I mean,
- 27:03Speaker 1: I personally am very happy with my forwards, and I'm
- 27:06Speaker 1: not totally sold on ESAC or Liverpool just yet, but
- 27:09Speaker 1: maybe that's an option if you're desperate to smash the
- 27:11Speaker 1: cash somewhere.
- 27:14Speaker 4: I think what you've just said hits an hour on
- 27:16Speaker 4: the head though, Kels. Is it that we're desperate to
- 27:19Speaker 4: spend money somewhere because we've got money?
- 27:21Speaker 2: It's never bad to spend money.
- 27:22Speaker 1: I wish it was real money. I wish I felt
- 27:24Speaker 1: like this in real life.
- 27:25Speaker 3: I know. You could just keep it all in the
- 27:27Speaker 3: bank though and just have it for a rainy day.
- 27:30Speaker 3: But I don't know. It's difficult, isn't it?
- 27:32Speaker 4: Because for you and I, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been a
- 27:35Speaker 4: really good third forward. He's been a really enjoyable own.
- 27:39Speaker 4: the Leeds fixtures continue to be really nice for the
- 27:42Speaker 4: foreseeable future. And I don't want to sell him. So
- 27:44Speaker 4: I don't have a place for Isak in my team
- 27:46Speaker 4: right now. Jules, as a Wissar owner, would you be tempted?
- 27:51Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:53Speaker 3: You've got the budget.
- 27:54Speaker 2: I'm an absolute merg. And I think I'm going to
- 27:56Speaker 2: go there completely.
- 27:57Speaker 3: What, to Isak?
- 27:58Speaker 5: Go for Isak and just watch Isak flop now and
- 28:01Speaker 5: just be.
- 28:02Speaker 2: The numbers are good. You know, he's five goals in six.
- 28:04Speaker 5: 3.8 xG, so slightly better than where he should be.
- 28:10Speaker 5: There's eight shots on target, so five goals for eight
- 28:13Speaker 5: shots on target. In terms of conversion rates, this is
- 28:16Speaker 5: pretty outrageous because he's got 17 shots in total. So
- 28:19Speaker 5: that might not last. And like I said, watch him
- 28:22Speaker 5: now flop, now that I'm going to bring him in, probably.
- 28:25Speaker 5: But there's also signs that Viet is getting better, that
- 28:28Speaker 5: Rion Gomua is looking great, that Victor Munoz is looking great,
- 28:32Speaker 5: that Barcola maybe is fine. his rhythm a little bit
- 28:36Speaker 5: and that it could all click certainly going forward. I
- 28:38Speaker 5: think defensively, I'm not too sure, as we saw against
- 28:42Speaker 5: Villarreal for Liverpool, especially in a game against Brighton, for example.
- 28:46Speaker 5: But it's an open game and I think there's potential
- 28:50Speaker 5: for Isak to, again, kind of keep going closer to
- 28:54Speaker 5: the form that he had at Newcastle and where we
- 28:56Speaker 5: all had him because he was wonderful before that move
- 28:59Speaker 5: to Liverpool.
- 29:00Speaker 2: So I'm going to get there because you know.
- 29:02Speaker 5: Me and temptation is tempting me far too much.
- 29:06Speaker 1: I'm wondering if all of this is also affecting, I
- 29:08Speaker 1: feel like there's been a bit of a formation shift
- 29:10Speaker 1: anyway in FPL recently, but it feels like the midfielders
- 29:15Speaker 1: are becoming so harder, harder week on week, particularly given
- 29:18Speaker 1: what's happening with the premium midfielders. So I'm wondering if
- 29:22Speaker 1: we're changing the way we look at teams. I've never
- 29:23Speaker 1: wanted to play a four at the back, for example,
- 29:26Speaker 1: but increasingly I am now. I did it last week
- 29:28Speaker 1: where I benched Josh King and, It didn't feel great,
- 29:30Speaker 1: but I did it and it paid off. And I'm
- 29:32Speaker 1: looking at my team again this week and I've gone
- 29:34Speaker 1: in with a four at the back. And five of
- 29:36Speaker 1: the top 10 FPL point scorers in the game are
- 29:39Speaker 1: actually defensively Six, if you include David Rea as well,
- 29:42Speaker 1: which is also why I went with him on wildcard
- 29:44Speaker 1: really as well. De Kooijp is the top scoring player
- 29:46Speaker 1: in the game as well with 59 points. He is
- 29:48Speaker 1: of course A defender, and of those five, only two
- 29:51Speaker 1: are premiums. They're Calafuri and Tarkovsky. The rest are budget-friendly.
- 29:55Speaker 1: De Kooiper, Bogle and Vuskovic. Brighton, always Brighton. Even when
- 30:00Speaker 1: we look outside the top 10, the defenders are still
- 30:01Speaker 1: performing well. So is it just a given, Sam? And
- 30:05Speaker 1: we kind of said it before when we touched upon
- 30:07Speaker 1: Brighton and whether we play De Kooiper, despite them playing
- 30:09Speaker 1: a fixture that in the past we'd have gone the
- 30:11Speaker 1: Liverpool way.
- 30:12Speaker 3: We don't play them.
- 30:13Speaker 1: But given the way defenders are performing, does it make
- 30:16Speaker 1: sense to set our teams up like that?
- 30:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 4: And a few seasons ago, like, and I say a few,
- 30:21Speaker 4: it was probably like four or five now, we used
- 30:23Speaker 4: to love playing big at the back, didn't we? We'd
- 30:25Speaker 4: spend loads of money on the defense. We'd have Alexander Arnold,
- 30:28Speaker 4: we'd have Robertson, we had Gabrielle, spend a fortune in
- 30:31Speaker 4: the defense. We'd play four at the back every single week.
- 30:36Speaker 4: Over the last few years, that's kind of been a
- 30:38Speaker 4: bit unfashionable. Like we've gone towards playing a heavy midfield
- 30:42Speaker 4: or front three because we've had good value in there.
- 30:45Speaker 4: Like even, you know, when you think back to last
- 30:46Speaker 4: season with the likes of Creepy Junior, you always had
- 30:48Speaker 4: that front three. You wanted to play them every week.
- 30:51Speaker 4: So the three at the back became kind of the
- 30:53Speaker 4: standard norm. Whereas over the last couple of weeks, I've
- 30:55Speaker 4: looked at my team and thought, I quite like my defence.
- 30:59Speaker 4: I'm struggling to bench one every week because I've got
- 31:01Speaker 4: two Arsenal defenders sitting there. But if I want to
- 31:04Speaker 4: play both of them, I've got to pick one other
- 31:07Speaker 4: team that I think might get a clean sheet. So
- 31:09Speaker 4: I'm more and more looking at playing four at the back. Plus,
- 31:12Speaker 4: I think this season, more so than ever, the defensive
- 31:16Speaker 4: contribution points are making a real difference to how I
- 31:18Speaker 4: feel about my defenders because they've become quite consistent, a
- 31:21Speaker 4: lot of them, with returning the DEFCON points. So like
- 31:24Speaker 4: Bobby Thomas over the last few weeks consistently returning the
- 31:27Speaker 4: defensive contribution points. Van Hecke, the same, constantly getting the
- 31:30Speaker 4: defensive contribution points. So even when they don't get the
- 31:33Speaker 4: clean sheet, they still get four. The trouble with my
- 31:35Speaker 4: midfielders is that I've not picked like the Elliot Andersons
- 31:40Speaker 4: of last season. I've picked the attacking midfielders. So when
- 31:42Speaker 4: they blank, they get two, they don't get four. So
- 31:46Speaker 4: actually I'm more and more kind of thinking that playing
- 31:50Speaker 4: four at the back and just playing three in midfield
- 31:52Speaker 4: alongside my three up top is a reasonable and viable strategy.
- 31:57Speaker 1: Same for you, Jules?
- 31:59Speaker 5: Yeah, and I think a lot of us probably build
- 32:01Speaker 5: out squads certainly for these early stages of the season
- 32:04Speaker 5: with like three really strong defenders and then the other
- 32:07Speaker 5: two are more budget, you know, cheaper ones in the
- 32:09Speaker 5: 4 million, in the 4.5. You might have Bobby Thomas,
- 32:12Speaker 5: you might have Von Erwig, you might have Job, those
- 32:15Speaker 5: kind of guys just to save money for other positions
- 32:18Speaker 5: in the idea that we're going to play three at
- 32:19Speaker 5: the back. Probably the way forward now is to have
- 32:23Speaker 5: a fourth really strong defender so you can have the
- 32:26Speaker 5: back four with really good options there. Your fifth one
- 32:30Speaker 5: still is a cheaper one, but like Sam just said,
- 32:33Speaker 5: that can still bring you with DEFCON a good four
- 32:35Speaker 5: points a week, even if you wanted to play a
- 32:38Speaker 5: back five, or you could put him in your back
- 32:40Speaker 5: four because he's got good fixtures, for example, or something
- 32:43Speaker 5: like that. But I think that's certainly the way to
- 32:46Speaker 5: go because the points are there. There's no doubt that
- 32:49Speaker 5: the points are there. And also for some really cheap,
- 32:53Speaker 5: easy options for you to bring into your team and
- 32:56Speaker 5: have them in your team without really taking anything away
- 32:59Speaker 5: from having a strong midfield with money invested in there
- 33:01Speaker 5: and same with your front three. And playing 4-3-3 at
- 33:05Speaker 5: times with just three midfielders would be decent because some
- 33:09Speaker 5: of the midfielders, as we've been saying, have been underwhelming
- 33:11Speaker 5: and underperforming anyway.
- 33:13Speaker 1: It totally depends on who you've got in your team
- 33:16Speaker 1: and how your team are performing. But Sam, you and I,
- 33:20Speaker 1: we can assume that a lot of people have Harland, Pedro,
- 33:22Speaker 1: plus one other. You and I have the DTL as
- 33:25Speaker 1: our other and I pretty much want to play, I
- 33:27Speaker 1: didn't against Arsenal, but I pretty much want to play
- 33:30Speaker 1: Dominic Calvert-Lewin every single week. So I'm starting with three
- 33:33Speaker 1: forwards and it feels like I'm more and more going
- 33:35Speaker 1: three forwards, four at the back and four, how many
- 33:39Speaker 1: is that in midfield? Three in midfield. Maths is not
- 33:42Speaker 1: my strong point, as we know, multiple times, which is
- 33:46Speaker 1: weird because it felt for a while like there was
- 33:48Speaker 1: so much value in midfield and we needed to pack
- 33:50Speaker 1: our midfields out like that. DCL is the third most
- 33:53Speaker 1: popular forward in the game, behind the other two that
- 33:56Speaker 1: I've mentioned that we have, Haaland and Pedro. But 12
- 33:59Speaker 1: defenders have FPL points outscored him so far. So am
- 34:03Speaker 1: I actually doing it wrong by playing him? And should
- 34:06Speaker 1: we actually just be going five at the back?
- 34:09Speaker 4: I mean, it is genuinely a strategy. You could play
- 34:14Speaker 4: five at the back. Feasibly, you could pick I mean,
- 34:17Speaker 4: you could actually afford to go for five premium defenders
- 34:20Speaker 4: if you so chose, as in all priced at, well,
- 34:23Speaker 4: maybe not quite premium, but all priced at five million
- 34:26Speaker 4: or over, and you could comfortably fit them into your team.
- 34:29Speaker 4: Whether you'd want to or not, because I do think
- 34:30Speaker 4: there's still some really good value. I mean, we've mentioned
- 34:33Speaker 4: Bobby Thomas twice already, but we'll mention him again here
- 34:35Speaker 4: because the defensive contribution points that he brings are so
- 34:39Speaker 4: powerful every single week. I think it will depend on
- 34:44Speaker 4: who you have as your third forward. I think if
- 34:46Speaker 4: you ask Jules, he'd probably say wishes he played his
- 34:48Speaker 4: defenders more often than he's played Wisser over the last
- 34:50Speaker 4: few weeks. So if you've got a forward that you're
- 34:54Speaker 4: not comfortable with, or you're not enjoying playing, or that's
- 34:57Speaker 4: not regularly returning, you know, a Wisser, I think we'll
- 35:00Speaker 4: even put Barry in that category, despite the fact he's
- 35:03Speaker 4: getting loads of chances. He's not returning as many goals
- 35:05Speaker 4: as he should. Then you probably are looking at, you know,
- 35:10Speaker 4: playing an extra defender instead. But if you have Calvert-Lewin,
- 35:14Speaker 4: I still think that over the course of the season,
- 35:16Speaker 4: if you're consistently playing him, he will return well. And
- 35:19Speaker 4: particularly over the next five weeks or so, when you
- 35:21Speaker 4: look at the Leeds fixtures, there's definitely goals for Calvert-Lewin
- 35:24Speaker 4: in those games. So I'm more likely to move to
- 35:26Speaker 4: four at the back, but keep playing Calvert-Lewin.
- 35:30Speaker 1: Basically, all this conversation tells me is that we should
- 35:32Speaker 1: kind of play, not the bare minimum midfielders, but the
- 35:35Speaker 1: midfield players. are the easiest to bench at the moment,
- 35:38Speaker 1: I guess, really, with their form. Okay, let's move on
- 35:41Speaker 1: now to differential of the week. And Jules has been
- 35:44Speaker 1: looking forward to this because he's already mentioned it, that
- 35:47Speaker 1: he actually finally got a very good one. Manzambi, you
- 35:49Speaker 1: were completely nailed on with this. You got 11 points,
- 35:52Speaker 1: goal clean sheet, and three bonus. You didn't tell us
- 35:54Speaker 1: he was going to get injured, though.
- 35:56Speaker 2: No, I know, but hopefully, as we said, it's not serious.
- 35:59Speaker 1: Sam's player did also return with an assist, Dominic Solanke,
- 36:02Speaker 1: but Jules has absolutely smashed you there this week. For once,
- 36:05Speaker 1: it was a high-scoring week from both of you, or
- 36:07Speaker 1: just a returning week from both of you. Go on, Jules,
- 36:09Speaker 1: you get to go first.
- 36:11Speaker 5: So, talking about forwards and who could be your third
- 36:14Speaker 5: forward with Haaland and Joel Pedro, I've gone for Evan
- 36:17Speaker 5: Nielsen this week because I think he's been in really
- 36:20Speaker 5: good form, to be fair, returning the last two games
- 36:22Speaker 5: with 12 points and And seven points, he's only owned
- 36:25Speaker 5: by 4.6% of the managers, so less than 5%. It
- 36:29Speaker 5: will cost you 6.1 million because he had a rise
- 36:32Speaker 5: in price. Two goals and four assists so far in
- 36:36Speaker 5: the league in seven games, so really good games return.
- 36:40Speaker 5: He averages 0.54 games involvement, expected games involvement per 90,
- 36:46Speaker 5: which is a really good ratio.
- 36:47Speaker 2: He works hard. A bomber team that.
- 36:50Speaker 5: didn't get a first win until this weekend against well
- 36:53Speaker 5: sorry last weekend against Sunderland but where you could see
- 36:56Speaker 5: that there were things in place for Marco Rosa for
- 36:59Speaker 5: the team to do well so they're obviously playing in
- 37:01Speaker 5: Europe tonight as we record the show on Thursday morning
- 37:04Speaker 5: the big game against AC Milan which will be a
- 37:07Speaker 5: wonderful occasion and hopefully that brings them momentum and a
- 37:11Speaker 5: positive dynamic towards the weekend and then yeah I think
- 37:15Speaker 5: even with Kruppi coming back now and at some point
- 37:17Speaker 5: might offer some competition I think Evan Nielsen is nailed
- 37:21Speaker 5: on for a place in the team and has been
- 37:23Speaker 5: looking really good for the last.
- 37:24Speaker 1: Few weeks I'm going to say this just to cover
- 37:26Speaker 1: us but a reminder we record on Thursday morning and
- 37:28Speaker 1: Bournemouth do still have to play on Thursday night so
- 37:31Speaker 1: if you're listening to this before then maybe just hold
- 37:34Speaker 1: off and just check that nothing happens to him Sam.
- 37:36Speaker 5: And they are united sorry they are united Old Trafford
- 37:39Speaker 5: on Sunday got a good record there he's open though
- 37:41Speaker 5: and they're united right now as we said are imploding
- 37:44Speaker 5: so it's a good chance for him.
- 37:46Speaker 4: Sam Uh, so I watched this chap play on Monday
- 37:52Speaker 4: night and no, it's not a Spurs player.
- 37:53Speaker 2: Yeah, chap. I like my nan.
- 37:55Speaker 5: Yeah, my nan used that word a lot. I was
- 37:57Speaker 5: just wondering if that's what I heard.
- 37:58Speaker 2: I wasn't sure.
- 37:59Speaker 5: I don't know who says chap for the under 65.
- 38:02Speaker 1: One thing I would say is it sounds really weird
- 38:06Speaker 1: when a French person says that word.
- 38:07Speaker 3: It sounds really weird. Yes, very English word. I watched
- 38:10Speaker 3: him play on Monday night and no, it's not a
- 38:12Speaker 3: Spurs player.
- 38:13Speaker 4: It's Jack Rodoni from Coventry. So he's going to cost
- 38:15Speaker 4: you 4.9 million. He's only in 0.3% of teams. So
- 38:19Speaker 4: a massive, massive differential. I was super impressed by him
- 38:22Speaker 4: on Monday evening. He's now returned in each of the
- 38:24Speaker 4: last three game weeks and is Coventry's top scorer this season.
- 38:28Speaker 4: He's also second in terms of FPL points scored across
- 38:30Speaker 4: the team. Over the course of the season, he's had
- 38:33Speaker 4: nine shots. Only Thomas has had more at Coventry than
- 38:36Speaker 4: he has. And of those, five have been big chances. So,
- 38:41Speaker 4: It's not just that he's having shots, it's that he's
- 38:43Speaker 4: having shots in the right places and they're good chances.
- 38:45Speaker 4: So he's more likely to return points and goals as
- 38:49Speaker 4: a result of that. He's also supplied a team leading
- 38:51Speaker 4: 22 crosses and created nine chances, which is again team leading.
- 38:55Speaker 4: So it does feel like if Coventry score, Rodoni is
- 38:59Speaker 4: going to be part of it. Plus he faces Fulham,
- 39:02Speaker 4: who have looked incredibly unconvincing so far this season. So yeah,
- 39:07Speaker 4: I quite fancy them to do well this weekend.
- 39:09Speaker 2: He's on penalties as well, as we saw in the
- 39:11Speaker 2: win against Newcastle, yeah.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good point, actually. Okay, then on to
- 39:15Speaker 1: transfers and captains. Let's start with transfers. I think we've
- 39:19Speaker 1: all got a premium-shaped problem. Jules, you're going to be
- 39:22Speaker 1: selling Bruno Fernandes, I'm presuming.
- 39:24Speaker 2: That's right, yeah. And Wissar probably.
- 39:26Speaker 5: I mean, to be fair, if he hadn't been at
- 39:28Speaker 5: Champions League week and so busy, there's a temptation to.
- 39:32Speaker 2: Play the wild card.
- 39:33Speaker 5: It's a bit late now, especially with the deadline being tomorrow, Friday,
- 39:37Speaker 5: with the game on Friday night.
- 39:38Speaker 2: So I probably won't do it now.
- 39:40Speaker 5: I've got two free transfers and they probably will be
- 39:41Speaker 5: for Bruno and Wissar and their replacement.
- 39:44Speaker 1: And their replacements will be?
- 39:46Speaker 5: So it will be Isak up front. I want to
- 39:48Speaker 5: go there. It'd be fun to watch as well. And
- 39:50Speaker 5: the form is there. But again, let's see. And then
- 39:53Speaker 5: for Bruno, I don't know, but I would need to
- 39:55Speaker 5: find some money. So it would have to be not
- 39:58Speaker 5: Cole Palmer, for example, like a Tavernier, like a Monzambi,
- 40:02Speaker 5: if he's past fit. And Unai Emery says that he's
- 40:04Speaker 5: ready for, even for the game against City on Saturday,
- 40:08Speaker 5: I would like to bring him in. But it would
- 40:09Speaker 5: be somewhere where I can get that money that then
- 40:12Speaker 5: allows me to do Isak.
- 40:15Speaker 2: Sam?
- 40:15Speaker 1: And what are you going to do with Saka?
- 40:18Speaker 4: Well, my planned move this weekend was to go from
- 40:21Speaker 4: Sir Bosley to Tavernier. That was the planned move I
- 40:24Speaker 4: was going to make. Obviously, now I've got to make
- 40:26Speaker 4: a second midfielder move. I can go anywhere because I've
- 40:29Speaker 4: got all the money in the world. I think when
- 40:32Speaker 4: I've done that Tavernier move, I'll have like over three
- 40:34Speaker 4: million in the bank. So I need to decide where
- 40:37Speaker 4: to go from Saka. I like Manzambi. I very nearly
- 40:41Speaker 4: did Manzambi last week as a bit of a punt
- 40:43Speaker 4: for Sir Bosley. And then decided not to. I'll wait
- 40:48Speaker 4: and see where we are and if it looks like
- 40:50Speaker 4: he's going to be available for the weekend, then I
- 40:52Speaker 4: might still do him in this week. I don't mind
- 40:54Speaker 4: the fixture, to be honest, against Man City because defensively
- 40:57Speaker 4: they've been a bit all over the place. Otherwise, it
- 41:02Speaker 4: feels like it might be a bit of a time
- 41:03Speaker 4: for a differential punt, to be honest. I don't want
- 41:05Speaker 4: to treble up on Chelsea, so I'm not going to
- 41:07Speaker 4: go for a Cole Palmer. I'm going to have to
- 41:10Speaker 4: wait and see what Unai Emery has got to say
- 41:12Speaker 4: for himself and then make a decision on Manzambi. But
- 41:14Speaker 4: definitely going for Tavernier this week is just who the
- 41:16Speaker 4: second midfielder coming in is.
- 41:18Speaker 1: This second news is such a blow to me because
- 41:20Speaker 1: I was actually likely to pay my bench boost this
- 41:22Speaker 1: week because as it stands, my bench, and I've got
- 41:26Speaker 1: four free transfers, so I was going to upgrade my
- 41:28Speaker 1: bench a little, just slightly. My bench is Salakis, Brentford
- 41:31Speaker 1: at home, King, who's got Coventry away, Sharder, Holloway and Davis,
- 41:35Speaker 1: Forrest at home. So I was going to sell Sharder
- 41:38Speaker 1: for maybe a Tavernia or someone that I'm probably sell
- 41:41Speaker 1: King as well, because I'm just not sold on Fulham
- 41:43Speaker 1: at the moment. And then all of a sudden I've
- 41:46Speaker 1: still have the two free transfers left. All of a
- 41:49Speaker 1: sudden my, my bench looks pretty good. And then I've
- 41:52Speaker 1: got rid of the bench boost. So yeah, now I'm
- 41:54Speaker 1: not going to be doing that because I've got a
- 41:55Speaker 1: Saka shape problem. That said, I could still use all
- 41:58Speaker 1: my full free transfers and, but I'm not going to,
- 42:00Speaker 1: because it just feels like I'm going to downgrade Saka
- 42:03Speaker 1: and have loads of money. And then in a week
- 42:05Speaker 1: or so, I might want to use, spread the money elsewhere.
- 42:07Speaker 1: I feel like it feels like there's a bit of
- 42:09Speaker 1: a change going on in FPL with the way the
- 42:11Speaker 1: premiums are going and with fixture swings and stuff. So
- 42:14Speaker 1: I'd rather hold some of the transfers in the bank,
- 42:16Speaker 1: but yeah, Saka is going to be a problem for
- 42:18Speaker 1: me to sort out as well. Uh, captains. Uh, I mean,
- 42:21Speaker 1: I've got my captaincy on Harland. It was actually on Saka,
- 42:25Speaker 1: but it's on Harland at the moment just because he's Harland.
- 42:28Speaker 1: But I think there's a conversation there this week. Do
- 42:31Speaker 1: you guys not Sam? I think there's definitely a conversation
- 42:34Speaker 1: this week. Um, away fixtures generally, you can look against him.
- 42:39Speaker 1: I also have been very impressed by Aston Villa recently,
- 42:42Speaker 1: so I'm not hugely loving the Haaland captaincy. The problem
- 42:46Speaker 1: I sort of have is that obviously now we've lost Saka.
- 42:50Speaker 1: The Chelsea boys are interesting for sure. I mean, Spurs
- 42:53Speaker 1: literally never win at Stamford Bridge, so they're definitely interesting
- 42:58Speaker 1: and part of the conversation. I am super tempted to
- 43:01Speaker 1: bring in Tavernier and captain him against Manchester United because
- 43:03Speaker 1: they've not kept a clean sheet yet and after midweek
- 43:07Speaker 1: they do seem to be in a little bit of
- 43:08Speaker 1: disarray um the captaincy is just it's not cut and
- 43:12Speaker 1: dry this week last week it was very easy it
- 43:14Speaker 1: was like hand it to harlan and that's the end
- 43:16Speaker 1: of it even the brighton boys that just a game
- 43:19Speaker 1: against liverpool that's not it's not an easy fixture but
- 43:22Speaker 1: yet you would have a couple of weeks ago you'd
- 43:24Speaker 1: have gone raquez to get on gross them but i'm
- 43:27Speaker 1: torn this week i'm really torn tavernier is my brave
- 43:31Speaker 1: differential captain but maybe it's just Haaland because it's Haaland
- 43:35Speaker 1: and he's had a midweek rest. Yeah, that's a good point.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Yeah, maybe. Yeah, it's a bit tricky.
- 43:41Speaker 5: And if you maybe were looking for something a bit safer,
- 43:45Speaker 5: let's say, I think Arsenal are home to Everton. If
- 43:47Speaker 5: you want to go for Calafiori or Kansa, why not?
- 43:52Speaker 5: I don't think they concede. If they concede, then obviously
- 43:56Speaker 5: your captaincy is messed up, but they might not. And
- 44:00Speaker 5: Calafiori could have a good game. and return well so
- 44:03Speaker 5: that could work other than that yeah there's a lot
- 44:05Speaker 5: of options but none of them is really that convincing.
- 44:08Speaker 1: So Who's yours on at the moment?
- 44:12Speaker 5: It's on Haaland because he was there for the you
- 44:15Speaker 5: know for last weekend but if Isak comes in at
- 44:18Speaker 5: home to Brighton in a game that should be open
- 44:20Speaker 5: really because that's the way both teams are playing and
- 44:23Speaker 5: should be really fun to watch I yeah I think
- 44:26Speaker 5: I probably would go for.
- 44:27Speaker 3: Isak Captain Isak against Brighton yeah.
- 44:32Speaker 1: Okay, interesting.
- 44:34Speaker 3: I know what he means.
- 44:35Speaker 1: There should be goals in there.
- 44:36Speaker 3: There should definitely be.
- 44:37Speaker 1: I hope you do, because it'll be fun for us
- 44:38Speaker 1: to see what happens. Okay, that's where we'll leave it.
- 44:40Speaker 1: Stay in mind, The Fantasy Show is back on Friday.
- 44:42Speaker 1: Countdown to the deadline.
- 44:44Speaker 3: Is also back.
- 44:45Speaker 1: It's at 4.30pm this week, because it's a Friday deadline.
- 44:48Speaker 1: That'll be over on the Premier League's YouTube channel. As
- 44:50Speaker 1: and Lee will be there answering your questions ahead of
- 44:52Speaker 1: that deadline. If you haven't already, head over to the
- 44:55Speaker 1: Premier League YouTube channel and press subscribe, so you'll be
- 44:58Speaker 1: notified immediately when they go live every week, so you
- 45:00Speaker 1: don't have to remember every single week, depending on when
- 45:02Speaker 1: the deadlines are. During the stream, even, they'll be chatting
- 45:05Speaker 1: about the best teams to invest in, as well as
- 45:07Speaker 1: answering as many questions that you might have as possible
- 45:10Speaker 1: over the course of the hour. And that does mean
- 45:13Speaker 1: that it's a Friday night deadline, and it's at 6.30pm,
- 45:15Speaker 1: 90 minutes ahead of Nottingham Forest, Twitter. I think it's
- 45:22Speaker 1: time to go, guys.
- 45:22Speaker 3: Bye.
- 45:23Speaker 2: Stream, trips, trips, chips, chips even.
- 45:26Speaker 3: All right, I can't speak.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Okay, chaps. I can't do maths.
