- 0:00July is Shark Awareness Month and we just
- 0:02passed Shark Awareness Day.
- 0:04You may or may not have seen it, but you
- 0:05probably noticed there's a
- 0:06lot of hype around sharks
- 0:07in July.
- 0:08You know, we had Netflix has released two
- 0:10documentary style, game
- 0:12show competition style
- 0:14videos that came out.
- 0:15We had Sharkfest from Nat Geo.
- 0:17We have coming up
- 0:18Shark Week from Discovery.
- 0:20And some of these episodes and some of
- 0:22these movies and documentaries are great.
- 0:23And some of them are
- 0:24just absolutely ridiculous.
- 0:25And some of them are entertaining and
- 0:26educational at the same time.
- 0:28You decide which one it is.
- 0:30And if you want to put a comment to say
- 0:31which one you like best
- 0:33over the month, please do
- 0:34so.
- 0:35But the fact is, is that
- 0:36we need to protect sharks.
- 0:38Sharks are facing extinction for most
- 0:40species and we need your help.
- 0:43And it's really difficult once you see
- 0:44all this stuff to
- 0:45understand how to protect sharks.
- 0:47People are telling you, you need to sign
- 0:49up for this or donate
- 0:50to this or do this type
- 0:51of action or this is what we need to do.
- 0:53And some of it's outdated and
- 0:55false and some of it's right.
- 0:57But how do you sift through it?
- 0:59I hope this episode is going to help you
- 1:01understand what we need to do.
- 1:03It's going to be very basic.
- 1:04It's going to be very general.
- 1:06But I would love to see what you think of
- 1:08this episode after
- 1:09you listen to it or you
- 1:10watch it and give me your thoughts on
- 1:13what you have been doing to
- 1:14support shark conservation.
- 1:16We're going to talk about on this episode
- 1:17of the How to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 1:19Let's start the show.
- 1:21Hey everybody, welcome back to another
- 1:22exciting episode of the How
- 1:23to Protect the Ocean podcast.
- 1:25I'm your host Andrew Lewin.
- 1:25And this is the podcast where you find
- 1:27out what's happening
- 1:27with the ocean, how you
- 1:28could speak up for the ocean or what you
- 1:30can do to live for a
- 1:31better ocean by taking action.
- 1:33Now in today's episode, I'm going to be
- 1:34sharing something
- 1:35that's a little different.
- 1:36It's a little bit of a storytelling
- 1:37method I've been playing with.
- 1:39And I want to really focus on shark
- 1:41conservation in this episode because
- 1:43something that we've
- 1:43been really focusing
- 1:44on this month is sharks.
- 1:46You know, I've done a couple of reviews
- 1:47that have really hit
- 1:47big in terms of getting a
- 1:49lot of engagement on YouTube and also
- 1:51from people on social
- 1:53media where I've posted clips.
- 1:55But I really want to discuss what shark
- 1:57conservation looks like today.
- 1:59So I'm going to do a little thing.
- 2:01It's going to be a little motivational
- 2:02speech or rant, but I put this together.
- 2:06I've written it together and I've tried
- 2:07to put this in a way
- 2:08that I hope that you enjoy
- 2:10and I hope that inspires you to do
- 2:12action, to really take
- 2:13action for sharks, for the
- 2:15protection of sharks, for increased shark
- 2:17research, and for
- 2:19increased shark exploration.
- 2:21We need to find more sharks, discover
- 2:23more sharks, understand
- 2:24the biodiversity and the
- 2:25importance of biodiversity of shark
- 2:26species, but also protect
- 2:27the sharks that we know and
- 2:28we love and we see each and every day on
- 2:31Shark Week, each and
- 2:32every day on Shark Fest
- 2:33or on a Netflix documentary or in a
- 2:36Netflix competition show.
- 2:37We need to understand and protect these
- 2:40and do more research.
- 2:41So here's just what I had cooked out.
- 2:44But before I show you this, I want you to
- 2:46understand that there
- 2:48are ways to take action.
- 2:49The best way is to join the undertow.
- 2:52It's a group that I've worked with two
- 2:53other wonderful women, my
- 2:54co-founders, who on this
- 2:56podcast app, we are building a community
- 2:58of wave makers and
- 3:00wave finders to be able
- 3:02to say, "Hey, you know what?
- 3:04This is how we protect the ocean.
- 3:05It's guided.
- 3:05It connects people to the ocean.
- 3:08We talk about the ocean.
- 3:09There's no algorithm.
- 3:10You're getting ocean news, ocean
- 3:12information and ways to
- 3:13protect the ocean each and every
- 3:14day.
- 3:15So if you go to speakupforblue.com
- 3:17forward slash join the
- 3:18undertow, you will be able
- 3:20to take part in that very
- 3:22shortly once we launch the app.
- 3:24We're testing it right now and I can't
- 3:25wait for you to be able to use it.
- 3:27All right.
- 3:27So here's the episode.
- 3:29Enjoy.
- 3:29Love to hear what you think.
- 3:30Here we go.
- 3:31Sharks have ruled the ocean for over 400
- 3:33million years, essential to
- 3:35healthy marine ecosystems.
- 3:37As apex predators, they balance food
- 3:39webs, influence fish
- 3:40populations and even help seagrass
- 3:42grow.
- 3:43But there are survivals in crisis, not
- 3:46just from overfishing,
- 3:47but from misinformation.
- 3:49Around the world, people claim to love
- 3:50sharks while promoting harmful practices.
- 3:53Tourism posts show them grabbing fins,
- 3:56swimming too close,
- 3:57baiting sharks for selfies.
- 4:00The real danger isn't just shark finning.
- 4:02It's the false sense that
- 4:03awareness equals action.
- 4:05Some influencers use sharks for clout
- 4:08while ignoring science
- 4:09and conservation ethics.
- 4:12Documentaries dramatize personal
- 4:13connections with sharks, but
- 4:14skip policy and local context.
- 4:18While over 100 million sharks die each
- 4:20year, many conservation campaigns profit
- 4:22off the fear or fantasy.
- 4:25The ocean is drowning in noise and sharks
- 4:28are running out of time.
- 4:30The real shark conservation starts with
- 4:31learning from science-backed sources.
- 4:34IUCN, Mote Marine Lab,
- 4:36Shark Trust, The Lost Shark Guy.
- 4:38It means sharing facts, not fear.
- 4:41Sharks are not monsters. They are
- 4:42misunderstood keystone species.
- 4:44You can combat myths on social media and
- 4:47call out staged awareness stunts.
- 4:50But advocacy matters.
- 4:52Support bans on shark finning,
- 4:54longlining, and
- 4:55unsustainable fishing practices.
- 4:57Push for marine protected areas with real
- 4:58enforcement, not just paper parks.
- 5:01Donate with purpose. Fund grassroot
- 5:03organizations, independent researchers,
- 5:06and local conservationists.
- 5:08Ask, does this group show results? Does
- 5:12it empower communities or
- 5:14just post-merch and hashtags?
- 5:17Choose ecosystem operators who respect
- 5:19sharks. No rioting, no
- 5:21harassment, no excessive baiting.
- 5:24If you're diving, follow a code of
- 5:26conduct guidelines and
- 5:27amplify ethical businesses.
- 5:29Want to help from home? Use sustainable
- 5:32seafood guides and say no to shark liver
- 5:34oil or cartilage products.
- 5:36The turning point is simple. Stop asking,
- 5:40is this viral and start
- 5:41asking, is this working?
- 5:44Conservation isn't sexy. It's long-term,
- 5:47policy-driven, and grounded in science.
- 5:50It happens in government meetings, data
- 5:52labs, coastal villages,
- 5:54not underwater TikToks.
- 5:56Sharks don't need influencers. They need
- 5:58enforced protections
- 5:59and thriving ecosystems.
- 6:01Don't get me wrong. Influencers can make
- 6:03great awareness if they
- 6:05follow the right rules.
- 6:08Real change comes when communities,
- 6:10scientists, and advocates collaborate,
- 6:13not compete for attention.
- 6:15If you want the right resolution, and if
- 6:18you want to help, host a shark talk at
- 6:20your school or library during Shark Week.
- 6:22Join a clean-up, support marine protected
- 6:25areas, and back
- 6:26policies that protect habitats.
- 6:28Educate yourself, then educate others,
- 6:32especially about how
- 6:33sharks help ecosystems thrive.
- 6:36Support youth, indigenous, and
- 6:37underrepresented leaders
- 6:39in marine conservation.
- 6:41Be an advocate, not a spectator. Because
- 6:44when you hype fads, sharks will still be
- 6:46out there facing extinction or recovery.
- 6:50It depends on whether we choose clicks or
- 6:52action, whether we listen to science or
- 6:55chase spectacle, whether we just said,
- 6:58we love sharks or actually help them
- 7:00survive. The ocean will remember which
- 7:02one we did, and so will
- 7:04our future generations.
- 7:28To protect the ocean and don't forget to
- 7:30sign up and join the undertow. Go to
- 7:31speakupforblue.com forward slash join the
- 7:34undertow. I want to thank you so much for
- 7:36listening to this episode of the how to
- 7:38protect the ocean podcast. I'm your host,
- 7:39Andrew Lewin from the true North strong
- 7:41and free. Have a great day. We'll talk to
- 7:42you next time and happy conservation.
