- 0:01Speaker 1: It's their Happy Family's podcast.
- 0:06Speaker 2: My name is Nicol Montoya.
- 0:08Speaker 1: You killed my father, prepared to die ha, and the
- 0:13Speaker 1: oscar goes to.
- 0:16Speaker 3: My mum and.
- 0:17Speaker 2: Dad that it's Justin Colson here with Kylie, my wife,
- 0:21Speaker 2: mum to our six kids, and founder of Happy Families
- 0:24Speaker 2: dot com dot you. That's me, not you, and you're
- 0:26Speaker 2: the mum. I'm the founder. Just need to clarify that
- 0:29Speaker 2: I'm so excited for today's podcast. I have no idea
- 0:32Speaker 2: how this is going to work. I've got like this
- 0:34Speaker 2: may be the world's most boring podcast, but I can't
- 0:37Speaker 2: wait to talk about it.
- 0:38Speaker 4: Well.
- 0:38Speaker 5: I'm interested to see how we make this the podcast
- 0:41Speaker 5: for the time poor parent, because I'm looking at my
- 0:43Speaker 5: list and I'm a little bit worried.
- 0:46Speaker 2: You've got about three hours worth of content for a
- 0:49Speaker 2: twelve minute podcast. We have a tradition in our home.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Actually we used to. We don't do it very much anymore.
- 0:54Speaker 2: We kind of get busy and go our separate ways,
- 0:57Speaker 2: and every now and again, though, we get really folks
- 1:00Speaker 2: and say we're going to have a movie night. Movie
- 1:02Speaker 2: nights like this family tradition. Everyone talks about. Everyone does
- 1:05Speaker 2: it at some point in their families trajectory or growth,
- 1:09Speaker 2: and we used to do it all the time. We'd
- 1:10Speaker 2: have like Friday night pizza movie that sort of stuff.
- 1:14Speaker 2: And just recently we sat down with the kids and
- 1:15Speaker 2: watched Luca on Disney Plus and oh my goodness, it
- 1:19Speaker 2: was just gorgeous.
- 1:20Speaker 1: Alberto Scofinal lokrom Beta. It's a human thing. I'm kind
- 1:28Speaker 1: of an expert.
- 1:28Speaker 5: So we've divided it up into kids under twelve and
- 1:31Speaker 5: kids over twelve.
- 1:33Speaker 2: It's a really big yeah. Yeah, bearing in mind that
- 1:35Speaker 2: kids under twelve huge developmental difference. And just because a
- 1:39Speaker 2: movie that we put in this list is for kids
- 1:41Speaker 2: under twelve doesn't mean that it's for a three year
- 1:43Speaker 2: old or even your seven year old.
- 1:44Speaker 1: Necessarily is parental guidance needed.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah. Every family's got their own standards, their own ideas
- 1:49Speaker 2: about what age of child should before they get to
- 1:52Speaker 2: watch a movie, and how they might be exposed to
- 1:55Speaker 2: scary content or other forms of content, and so we
- 1:59Speaker 2: want to leave that to you, but we're just excited
- 2:01Speaker 2: to go through our list. So for our little kids,
- 2:05Speaker 2: that is our under twelves. How do you want to
- 2:08Speaker 2: do this? Do you want to do one each or
- 2:09Speaker 2: do you just want to go through. You just want
- 2:11Speaker 2: to go through your list? You're so you do it? No, no, no, no, no,
- 2:13Speaker 2: after you please, ladies before John?
- 2:15Speaker 1: Oh is that right? You see? If you can top
- 2:16Speaker 1: my list? Is that what you're going to do?
- 2:18Speaker 2: What's your what's on your list? How many are you
- 2:20Speaker 2: going to give us?
- 2:21Speaker 1: I'll start with five.
- 2:22Speaker 2: Oh gosh, I'm not going to have time for my
- 2:25Speaker 2: list at all. Maybe you've got some on your list
- 2:28Speaker 2: that I have on mine anyway, and we can tick
- 2:29Speaker 2: them off together.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Okay, Well, I'm thinking of cartoons to start with, because
- 2:33Speaker 5: there's some brilliant cartoons out there.
- 2:36Speaker 2: Yep.
- 2:36Speaker 5: And I can't have a top one. Honestly, I can't
- 2:39Speaker 5: say this is in list of any order.
- 2:41Speaker 2: This is just sure. So these are just films that
- 2:43Speaker 2: you should watch with your kids. Maybe. I mean it's Thursday, right,
- 2:46Speaker 2: Tomorrow is the weekend. Well, tomorrow night, it's the weekend.
- 2:50Speaker 2: So maybe we'll inspire some high quality movie night watching
- 2:54Speaker 2: with Kylei's list.
- 2:56Speaker 1: I'm even chasing the list as I'm as, I'm thinking,
- 2:58Speaker 1: if you just.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Get on with the and everyone's like, come.
- 3:00Speaker 1: On, okay, So I loved Monsters, inc.
- 3:04Speaker 2: Okay, people Eastern Seaboard, coming on Live, Scared, coming Out.
- 3:12Speaker 1: I thought it was just adorable.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Loved it. Yeah, Letowski Lawski. I just my favorite character
- 3:20Speaker 2: is the woman behind the desk. I'm watching you, Awsky
- 3:25Speaker 2: watching that.
- 3:30Speaker 1: She's just dead pan, isn't she.
- 3:32Speaker 5: I just think it's such a delightful twist. You know,
- 3:36Speaker 5: kids are often scared of monsters, and and the whole
- 3:39Speaker 5: idea behind this beautiful, big, cuddly Sully and his desire
- 3:45Speaker 5: to you know, make kids' lives happier.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I just love it. I think it's gorgeous.
- 3:50Speaker 2: But then you've got Randall as well, and this is
- 3:52Speaker 2: a movie that gives you the opportunity to talk to
- 3:54Speaker 2: your kids about how it's not about how you look,
- 3:57Speaker 2: it's about what's in your heart. I'm with you. I
- 4:00Speaker 2: didn't have mons to think on my list, but what
- 4:02Speaker 2: an absolute delight. What was next on your list?
- 4:05Speaker 1: Brother? Bear body?
- 4:10Speaker 2: I was saving this story from the Salmon right, but
- 4:13Speaker 2: I'll tell you it was probably the fifth or sixth
- 4:17Speaker 2: my entire life. Oh this sounds good. You should definitely
- 4:21Speaker 2: save it, do you think so?
- 4:22Speaker 6: Oh?
- 4:22Speaker 2: Yeah, for your friends.
- 4:24Speaker 5: I don't think it's a particularly popular movie, but I
- 4:28Speaker 5: just love it again. It's this quest to right wrongs,
- 4:36Speaker 5: only to realize that you're actually part of the problem.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Brother Bear. That wasn't on my list, but I can
- 4:42Speaker 2: rewrite my list. I can put that on there again.
- 4:45Speaker 2: Comic Relief. I mean, it's a really serious movie about
- 4:48Speaker 2: forgiveness and writing wrongs, like you said, But my favorite
- 4:52Speaker 2: characters and it's one of the two what are they like?
- 4:54Speaker 2: I was going to say the two Antelope. Oh yeah,
- 4:57Speaker 2: he's actually the squirrel and I'm more of a bred wolverine.
- 5:01Speaker 2: Look at these husbands. I think we should watch it
- 5:04Speaker 2: this weekend. I really really like Brother Bear. What's your
- 5:07Speaker 2: third one?
- 5:08Speaker 1: Finding Nemo?
- 5:13Speaker 6: Beyond the scene.
- 5:14Speaker 1: What I love.
- 5:15Speaker 5: About Finding Nemo is here's this little kid who, because
- 5:19Speaker 5: he has a little defect, has been held back for
- 5:22Speaker 5: so long. His dad is so scared to learnm out
- 5:25Speaker 5: in the big wide world.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Nema.
- 5:30Speaker 1: It's not scene, NeiMa, No, you're about to swim and
- 5:34Speaker 1: open water.
- 5:35Speaker 5: And yet when he is defiant essentially and he does
- 5:40Speaker 5: go on this really scary journey, he recognizes and so
- 5:44Speaker 5: does his dad, that there is so much.
- 5:45Speaker 2: Potential within capability. Yeah, and it was.
- 5:48Speaker 1: It's so empowering.
- 5:49Speaker 2: I've never thought of finding Nemo before in this light.
- 5:52Speaker 2: But you've just said it, and you use the word
- 5:54Speaker 2: defect because he had that the little thin, the little
- 5:57Speaker 2: fin that wasn't right. And I'm certainly not using that
- 6:00Speaker 2: word in this context in any way, shape or form.
- 6:03Speaker 2: We talk regularly. I'm always talking with parents whose children
- 6:07Speaker 2: are neurodivergent, and in some ways they could be a
- 6:11Speaker 2: little bit like Nemo. There's something about them that makes
- 6:15Speaker 2: them that little bit different. They don't quite get on
- 6:17Speaker 2: in the world the same way that everybody else does,
- 6:20Speaker 2: and yet they have so much capability. And I've just
- 6:22Speaker 2: just as you said that, I've thought to myself, what
- 6:24Speaker 2: a what a beautiful lesson, what a great movie to
- 6:27Speaker 2: talk to any child, but particularly those who are neurodivergent,
- 6:32Speaker 2: about how their differences don't make them any less capable. Yeah, okay,
- 6:40Speaker 2: so do I.
- 6:40Speaker 1: So just then looks over the Moluskin says, with friends
- 6:44Speaker 1: like these, who needs anemonees?
- 6:48Speaker 2: What else have you got?
- 6:49Speaker 5: These two are side by side because I can't. I
- 6:51Speaker 5: can't separate them. I love Moulant and I love Brave.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They're good. I wouldn't put them on my wouldn't put
- 6:57Speaker 2: them on my list.
- 7:00Speaker 1: All right, tell me your listen.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Have you got anymore?
- 7:02Speaker 1: Well, I've got heaps.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Are you serious? Yeah, go for it. It's meant to
- 7:05Speaker 2: be five, that's right, So I'll let you have your five.
- 7:08Speaker 3: Brother.
- 7:08Speaker 2: What else I've just got to hear it. Let's just
- 7:10Speaker 2: run through them.
- 7:10Speaker 1: Oh so you can pull my list apart. Let's just
- 7:13Speaker 1: let's just look. I loved Mowana. I loved it again.
- 7:16Speaker 2: So what you're saying is, if you've got kids under twelve,
- 7:18Speaker 2: just watch the entire Disney back of course.
- 7:22Speaker 5: All right, there's so many good movies, the Lego movie,
- 7:25Speaker 5: and we have to we have to have an honorable
- 7:27Speaker 5: mention for the Lego Movie, completely outside the realm of
- 7:30Speaker 5: anything I would normally watch, and I did not want
- 7:32Speaker 5: to like it, but I just loved it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: I want to tell you that I hated it, But
- 7:37Speaker 2: right now you've just put an earworm into my head,
- 7:40Speaker 2: and all I want to do is say, everything is awesome.
- 7:45Speaker 1: Everything's gone on your part of the team like us.
- 7:49Speaker 2: So basically, it's not just Disney now, it's anything animated.
- 7:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, wreck Itt, Ralph, Tarzan.
- 7:54Speaker 5: There's so many Pokahontas, Pokahontas. Do you know what's into
- 8:00Speaker 5: that we've grown up with all of these movies?
- 8:02Speaker 2: The kids used to call it ponker Hontas. Can we
- 8:04Speaker 2: watch Poor Contos?
- 8:06Speaker 1: And our seven year old hasn't watched half of these movies?
- 8:08Speaker 2: Yeah, all the big kids have seen them, but the
- 8:10Speaker 2: little Yeah, all right? This weekend at Disney an marathon
- 8:16Speaker 2: movie marathon. Really maybe maybe after the break, I'm going
- 8:20Speaker 2: to give you a slightly more diverse idea of movies
- 8:25Speaker 2: for primary school kids. It's the Happy Families Podcast.
- 8:29Speaker 6: Imagine a home where discipline got results without anyone having
- 8:32Speaker 6: to feel bad or in trouble. The do's and don'ts
- 8:34Speaker 6: of discipline as a webinar to help parents set limits
- 8:37Speaker 6: with love, compassion and humanity. Find it now at happy
- 8:41Speaker 6: families dot com, dot au slash shop.
- 8:44Speaker 5: It's the Happy Families Podcast, the podcast for the time
- 8:46Speaker 5: poor parent who's probably a little bit more time poor.
- 8:49Speaker 5: After our first attempt at sharing some of our favorite
- 8:53Speaker 5: movies for kids under.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Twelve, I feel like you've kind of given a kids
- 8:56Speaker 2: under eight rather than a kids under twelve. Well I've
- 8:58Speaker 2: got another list, right, Well, I'm going to give you
- 9:03Speaker 2: my list because I feel I'm feeling like.
- 9:05Speaker 1: You're going to give all the good ones. Yes, because
- 9:08Speaker 1: I gave them to you.
- 9:09Speaker 2: My number one for kids, you didn't give them to me.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I'm the movie buff in the house and you're not.
- 9:18Speaker 2: My number one movie for kids in primary school is
- 9:22Speaker 2: The Princess Bride.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I don't think I'm quite familiar with her.
- 9:26Speaker 2: I'll explain, and I'll use small words that you'll be
- 9:29Speaker 2: sure to understand. You war tug faced buffoon.
- 9:33Speaker 1: The Princess Bride. You know that that is the That
- 9:36Speaker 1: is your absolute, hands down favorite movie ever.
- 9:39Speaker 2: Ask me why I'm smiling.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Why are you smiling?
- 9:42Speaker 2: Because I know something you don't know. Oh, and what
- 9:45Speaker 2: is that? I am not left hand. I'm not left
- 9:48Speaker 2: handed either. You have the scene.
- 9:50Speaker 1: I do know the scene.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Don't ask me the whole movie. If every now and
- 9:55Speaker 2: again I bump into somebody who has not watched The
- 9:56Speaker 2: Princess Bride, the whole movie is simply outstanding. There's my
- 10:01Speaker 2: name is amigo. My name is a Montoya. It's not amigo,
- 10:06Speaker 2: it's indigo. My name is Nigel Montoya.
- 10:09Speaker 1: You killed my father, prepare to die?
- 10:12Speaker 2: Offer me money?
- 10:14Speaker 6: Yes?
- 10:15Speaker 2: Oh gosh, so that was my number one. My number two,
- 10:21Speaker 2: The Greatest Showman?
- 10:22Speaker 1: How did you know?
- 10:23Speaker 2: I was going to say that? How did you know?
- 10:25Speaker 2: I was literally about to say that. But it's my favorite?
- 10:28Speaker 2: You didn't you just say it? You don't get the
- 10:30Speaker 2: credit for it. The Greatest Showman. This is the ultimate
- 10:32Speaker 2: sing along movie.
- 10:38Speaker 1: It literally pushed High School Musical off the charts.
- 10:42Speaker 2: Yeah, well, I had High School Musical as an honorable mention.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Yeah, and it is really good. But the Greatest Showman. Wow,
- 10:48Speaker 1: what a movie.
- 10:50Speaker 2: I've got The Sandlot Kids. Yeah, no, really, no, that's harsh.
- 10:55Speaker 2: I can't believe you just said and dismissed it out
- 10:57Speaker 2: of hand.
- 10:57Speaker 1: Totally.
- 10:58Speaker 2: I love The Sandlot Kids.
- 11:00Speaker 1: How old are you?
- 11:00Speaker 2: That's rough? Yeah, I guess I am. Well, my next
- 11:04Speaker 2: two are even older. I'm going with the.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Sound of music.
- 11:10Speaker 2: I was about to start singing a deer.
- 11:13Speaker 1: A female deer, A drop of golden sun? Are you
- 11:18Speaker 1: not going to see anyone?
- 11:19Speaker 2: No? No, no, I'm going to let JU put the
- 11:21Speaker 2: music in from there. I hope we started on the right.
- 11:25Speaker 6: Hello.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Well, and I'm just going to mention Mary Poppins super fredireistic,
- 11:35Speaker 2: even though the sound of it is something quite a true. Yeah, oh, Wow,
- 11:40Speaker 2: you seem unhappy with you.
- 11:41Speaker 1: No, it's it's good. It is good. But there are
- 11:44Speaker 1: so many others. Just we haven't we haven't mentioned spirit,
- 11:47Speaker 1: and so.
- 11:48Speaker 4: I grew from cold to stallion, as wild and reckless
- 11:52Speaker 4: as thunder over the land.
- 11:53Speaker 2: I've got that on my list. I love Spirit. Spirit
- 11:56Speaker 2: is Stallion of the Sun.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Like literally, hands down. I think that that is my
- 12:00Speaker 1: favorite ever ever.
- 12:02Speaker 2: Well, I think it's my favorite. What about the Toy
- 12:04Speaker 2: Story trilogy? You got brand me? He's not a space ranger,
- 12:09Speaker 2: he doesn't fight evil or shoot lasers or fly excuse me.
- 12:13Speaker 1: It's a pretty good one.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Actually there's four, but I don't count the last one.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I didn't like it. I'm just going to go with
- 12:18Speaker 2: the trilogy because I absolutely died at the end of
- 12:21Speaker 2: the third one where he says goodbye to his top
- 12:26Speaker 2: so much. Wow, that's hard to take.
- 12:31Speaker 1: Gosh, you haven't mentioned how to train a dragon? Oh,
- 12:34Speaker 1: how to train your Dragon, which is definitely up there.
- 12:37Speaker 2: Kids love that one. Okay, Cheaper by.
- 12:39Speaker 1: The dozen National Treasure. Oh, yes, there's just so many.
- 12:44Speaker 2: Did you have anything else?
- 12:45Speaker 6: Well?
- 12:45Speaker 5: I did, and you're going to completely disagree with me.
- 12:47Speaker 5: But it is a childhood family favorite of my I
- 12:51Speaker 5: did love.
- 12:51Speaker 2: National Treasure, just to go back outstanding, brilliant, so much fun.
- 12:55Speaker 2: I mean, I know it's Nicholas Cage and it's a
- 12:57Speaker 2: load of garbage, but oh my goodness, it was fun.
- 13:00Speaker 2: Such a fun movie. What's the one that I'm going
- 13:02Speaker 2: to disagree with you on?
- 13:04Speaker 1: I grew up with this one. It took me a
- 13:06Speaker 1: long time to actually find a copy of it.
- 13:08Speaker 2: For my children, ye, and for your children, for my children,
- 13:11Speaker 2: just your children.
- 13:12Speaker 1: Our girls. Okay, and it is very much girl a
- 13:15Speaker 1: girly movie.
- 13:16Speaker 5: But the Slipper in the Rose. If you have not
- 13:19Speaker 5: seen this version of Cinderella, it is to die.
- 13:23Speaker 2: For just putting it out there to sleep through. Did
- 13:25Speaker 2: you say, oh, you're so harsh. Next thing you're going
- 13:28Speaker 2: to say, The King and I, Oh, that's a brilliant movie.
- 13:33Speaker 2: The Scarlet Pimpernel, that's my favorite. Hey, we could go
- 13:36Speaker 2: on like this all day. We hope this has not
- 13:38Speaker 2: been terribly boringly, awfully horrible for you. Hopefully we've actually
- 13:42Speaker 2: inspired you and given you some ideas for what you
- 13:44Speaker 2: can watch with the kids over the weekend. We're going
- 13:46Speaker 2: to put every one of the movies that we recommended
- 13:48Speaker 2: into the show notes. I'm so sorry to the team
- 13:50Speaker 2: that writes our show notes. Gosh, good luck with that.
- 13:54Speaker 2: And so long as you have some sort of streaming service,
- 13:56Speaker 2: you'd be able to watch pretty much all of them
- 13:58Speaker 2: one way or the other cross the weekend. We would
- 14:01Speaker 2: also love to know what did we miss, what should
- 14:03Speaker 2: we have put in that we didn't jump onto Facebook,
- 14:05Speaker 2: because we're putting our lists up onto Facebook today as well,
- 14:09Speaker 2: and we want to hear why you're disagreeing with us
- 14:11Speaker 2: or why you're agreeing. And next week, same day, next Thursday,
- 14:17Speaker 2: we're going to talk about the best movies to watch
- 14:19Speaker 2: with your teenagers.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Oh that'll be interesting.
- 14:22Speaker 2: I'm going to argue with you NonStop about this one.
- 14:24Speaker 2: I can already feel it. The Happy Family's podcast, as always,
- 14:28Speaker 2: is produced by Justin Rulon. Hey, justin your favorite movie?
- 14:32Speaker 2: Four Kids Under twelve?
- 14:33Speaker 3: For me, it's a favorite from my childhood, the Muppet
- 14:36Speaker 3: movie from nineteen seventy nine, so it's an old one.
- 14:39Speaker 3: As an eighties kid, this was something we watched over
- 14:42Speaker 3: and over again on the old VHS videotape. And of course,
- 14:45Speaker 3: who can forget the iconic opening scene with kom and
- 14:48Speaker 3: the Frog singing Rainbow Connection. Why there are so many songs?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Nice choice? And Craig Bruce, our executive producer, Craig, your
- 15:00Speaker 2: kid's grown up, But what was your favorite?
- 15:02Speaker 6: Well? Thanks for asking, guys, I can't believe you left
- 15:05Speaker 6: this off the list.
- 15:06Speaker 2: The Greatest Christmas.
- 15:08Speaker 6: Movie of all time, starring Will Farrell.
- 15:11Speaker 2: It's got to be Elf Satah's coming down. Oh my god,
- 15:16Speaker 2: seeing it here, I know him. Hey, Kylie, can you
- 15:22Speaker 2: hear that? It sounds like the wind up music has started?
- 15:24Speaker 2: You know what they do, the speech, the wind up music?
- 15:26Speaker 1: Oh?
- 15:26Speaker 2: Oh, well, you better be quick.
- 15:28Speaker 1: Is there anyone you'd like to thank?
- 15:29Speaker 2: Justin Well, if you're asking, sure, let me just grab
- 15:32Speaker 2: my my script here. I want to thank my high
- 15:36Speaker 2: school teacher, mister Simpson for believing in me, and mister
- 15:40Speaker 2: Killer as well. You might a year on my first
- 15:42Speaker 2: Metro radio program director for sacking me from B one
- 15:45Speaker 2: oh five. Now it's a good thing. I mean, I
- 15:48Speaker 2: wouldn't be here without him, and he didn't actually sack me,
- 15:51Speaker 2: but I'll say it anyway. My junior swimming coach, Gary Toner,
- 15:54Speaker 2: I'm feeling very Olympic right now. I couldn't have done
