- 1:43SPEAKER_02: So we've got two under two, and uh yeah, it's uh it's a it's a beautiful mess over here.
- 1:48SPEAKER_01: I believe every bit of that I met Booker on day three.
- 1:51SPEAKER_01: He's a beautiful baby boy.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: I'm excited to watch football with him in the future, give him his first beer at 15 weeks.
- 1:57SPEAKER_02: We had uh Chinese food and hospital beers, courtesy of the Wade family.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: So thank you.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, absolutely.
- 2:03SPEAKER_01: Uh, but the good uh the good news is you before long you'll return the favor.
- 2:07SPEAKER_01: Uh wife and I have two already, and we got number three, another baby boy coming at Christmas, which might make bull season a little interesting.
- 2:14SPEAKER_01: I might be um running on zero sleep with a one-week old.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, but no, Ann and I are very excited.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Number three, uh coming in uh late December, baby boy.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: I'm on the I'm on the list for a new Toyota Sienna minivan coming here pretty soon.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Man, that's gonna be slick.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: I got I mean, you know, the weird thing is I'm old enough, I'm like a little excited about it.
- 2:33SPEAKER_01: You know, I've been dunking on minivans my whole life, even though I grew up in one, but now I'm gonna own one myself here, and it's so it's it's a real it's a real change.
- 2:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you just slap some big rims on that thing.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: Well, now they're also now they're also damn nice.
- 2:46SPEAKER_01: They I drove a test drove a friend of mine has a brand new Sienna, and it's like driving a spaceship.
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: It's it's on floats, thing is amazing.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: So it's it's a it's a nursery on wheels.
- 2:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it is not the wood-paneled dodge caravan that I grew up with going down the highway with the AC lagging with like nine of us in there driving the beach.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: So it's a different experience.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:05SPEAKER_02: Well, I made a joke recently.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: I'm driving around in dead-ass trash truck because I've got car seats, I've got food, I've got snack cups, I've got extra blankets, I got diapers, I got fishing lures, I got umbrellas, I've got shoes for any size.
- 3:21SPEAKER_02: I've got everything in there.
- 3:23SPEAKER_01: So that's what I'm working with.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: I'm pull I'm still pulling out goldfish from like 2017 out of my kids' car seats that have just been there since the dawn of time.
- 3:31SPEAKER_01: They're still good.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: They're probably are still good.
- 3:34SPEAKER_01: But anyway, uh, let's keep it moving.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: So that's that's the updates from uh Mike and Mike.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: Um life updates.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: Like good life dates, very good life updates.
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: Uh what are you drinking tonight?
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: I am sipping on a knob creek 12.
- 3:46SPEAKER_02: Oh.
- 3:47SPEAKER_02: So what is Knob Creek 12?
- 3:49SPEAKER_01: For folks who don't know, what does the 12 mean?
- 3:51SPEAKER_02: Uh it's a 12-year age statement from Knob Creek.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: Um it's 100 proof, so it's it's good.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's not rare.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: It's not it's it's more a little rare here in Virginia.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: Um nationally, probably not so much.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, but it's it's tasty.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: It's good.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: Nice, very nice.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm working on my uh summer.
- 4:13SPEAKER_01: So every time Memorial Day till about Labor Day, I'm a big light beer drinker and I'm drinking some I'm drinking Mexi Lagers all summers, Pacific Co specifically.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: I got a modello especial tonight.
- 4:24SPEAKER_01: Um, something about a good Mexi Lager and the heat just go hand in hand.
- 4:28SPEAKER_01: So I spend all summer drinking on these.
- 4:30SPEAKER_01: I haven't pivoted to my fall.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: You got a lime in there?
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: I don't.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: If I if I was more organized, you're selling yourself short.
- 4:36SPEAKER_01: I you're not you're wrong, you're not wrong.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: You're not wrong.
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: If I was more organized, I would.
- 4:41SPEAKER_01: But in the fall, I will shift myself to the bigger beers and we'll start getting ready for those cold weather stouts and big heady.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: But for now, man, this I mean it's yesterday was like the hottest day of the year.
- 4:52SPEAKER_01: It was like 99 degrees or something outrageous in Richmond.
- 4:55SPEAKER_01: Like, this is like this is what I need right now.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: This this is yeah, we uh we went two weeks without air conditioning.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: So uh so you know, yeah, that's our other life update.
- 5:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: Uh so let's talk about a little bit what's new with the show.
- 5:10SPEAKER_01: Um, obviously, we're gonna do season two this year.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: We're gonna do this is a this is a college football preview.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk about off-season storylines.
- 5:17SPEAKER_01: What we're really gonna do is kind of uh talk about what you if you have if you turned off college football after the national championship George Alabama game, and you've kind of just turned it.
- 5:26SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk about like what have been the main casual.
- 5:28SPEAKER_01: Casual.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: If you we're gonna talk about the main overarching storylines that have happened leading up to the uh new season, which starts in about a month, uh kind of get you caught up there.
- 5:38SPEAKER_01: Um that's what we're gonna do tonight.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: We're all we're probably gonna do another one.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: We'll maybe maybe two more preseason shows that are gonna be a little different from our typical weekly, which is preview last week, review or sorry, review last week, preview the next.
- 5:50SPEAKER_01: We'll get into that probably week one.
- 5:52SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, there's there's a lot of um a lot of off-season drama and a lot of knee-jerk reactions.
- 5:58SPEAKER_02: And uh, if you don't already have an opinion, we're gonna tell you what to think about it.
- 6:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're gonna give your opinions for you so you can have to worry about that.
- 6:04SPEAKER_01: So we'll you'll be all set.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: Just check that off your list.

- 7:44SPEAKER_01: We have not come with a better word for you guys yet.
- 7:46SPEAKER_01: We're still working that out, and you're gonna get access to what we're calling the equipment room.

- 8:07SPEAKER_01: And we're gonna build a college football fan community right here on that, right here on the Discord, which you'll have access to for the low, low price of three dollars per month, which is yeah, there'll be there'll be some exclusive content in there, but um, the coolest thing is that it's it's just gonna be an ongoing live chat.
- 8:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, so you know, you'll be able to talk to other fans, college football fans.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, maybe you and maybe your buddies don't care about it as much as you do.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: We're gonna connect you to people who do.
- 8:33SPEAKER_02: So that's uh it'll it'll it'll be nice.

- 8:38SPEAKER_01: And just so you guys know, so obviously we are we're we're hoping to get some contributions from uh you guys are fans, and you guys should know what are we gonna do with those money?
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Mike and I are not quitting our jobs, we're not taking any of this money.
- 8:49SPEAKER_01: This money is all getting invested reinvested into the show.
- 8:52SPEAKER_01: Uh, we're to pay uh overhead, we're to upgrade our hardware, microphones, cameras, that sort of thing.
- 8:57SPEAKER_01: Um, we're gonna talking about uh maybe getting some swag at some point for you guys.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: We've got a really cool idea for for some stuff.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: We've got a good idea for some swag.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Uh hire a producer to help us uh uh develop content, grow the show, that sort of thing.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Everything to make the experience of the mic blitz better for you.
- 9:14SPEAKER_01: So that's where all of your contributions will, which we are so so grateful for, which will of course go.
- 9:20SPEAKER_01: So I think it's worth mentioning.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: Um, I think we covered that's kind of what's new for 2022.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: Administrative stuff.
- 9:26SPEAKER_01: Check, let's dive in.
- 9:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's talk college football.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: All right, cool.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: So for today, we're gonna talk about uh a couple storylines, the main ones that you have missed, the three kind of off-season headlines, and then Mike and I are gonna do some bold predictions or we're gonna dunk on each other for how dumb they are.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: So it's gonna be a blast.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: Uh, first one, first, first main storyline we're gonna talk about tonight.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: We're gonna talk about uh uh the conference realignment.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: Mike, will you give us a quick and dirty what's going on?
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, there is a cash grab going on, essentially, for TV deals, and that is pushing a uh a lot of change in college football.
- 10:04SPEAKER_02: Right now, uh, of course, the SEC media deal is kind of um king of the hill, followed by the Big Ten.
- 10:13SPEAKER_02: And once the Big Ten finalizes their deal, it'll essentially be next man up, uh, which is causing a lot of different realignment.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: A lot, and and the major, I think the major sort of thing that's driving a lot of this is everyone is sort of operating in the dark, uh, and they're all operating with their best interests in mind.
- 10:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, so there's a lot of uncertainty uh on from everywhere.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: Um, for example, and this didn't just start this year, but it's it's it's ramped up at a tremendous speed.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: Um, when OU and Texas decided that they were going to join the SEC, nobody knew until it was announced.
- 10:56SPEAKER_02: Uh, the com the commissioner commissioners of of the conference didn't know, uh, of the other schools didn't know.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: And so um there's just a lot happening behind the scenes, and everyone is scrambling to get theirs.
- 11:08SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: Is that fair enough?
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I think you I think you pretty much nailed it.
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: Um, I'll add obviously the most recent one that happened like two weeks ago, USC and UCLA, who have both been stalwarts of the Pac 12, much like OU and Texas were the Big 12, have uh committed to uh the Big Ten.
- 11:23SPEAKER_01: And what's gonna happen?
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: What's what we're and now most recently we've seen rumors which we think are reasonably credible of the SEC expanding further to uh University of Virginia, North Carolina, Florida State, and Clemson join the SEC, which would bring them to 20 teams.
- 11:41SPEAKER_01: So that's the rumor.
- 11:43SPEAKER_01: That's a lot of rumors fine.
- 11:44SPEAKER_01: That's the rumor.
- 11:45SPEAKER_01: Acc has the media deal, so they've got they've got some, they have a little bit more protection, but what what I think everybody is seeing, and is that we're we're we are we are well on our way to super conferences.
- 11:56SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, 10 years ago there were six.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: The big east went went the way of the Atlantic Coast, the American Atlantic Conference, which is now gone.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: And I mean, I mean if we're just speaking about like what I think is gonna happen, I think we're I think we're on our way to two.
- 12:11SPEAKER_01: I think yeah, I'm I'm the Big 12 and the ACC and the Pac-12.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: I don't think either of those, any of those teams will have the program pedigree left to compete with what will be the gargantuan Big Ten and the massive SEC.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Is it are we are we heading to to two to two to four top 40 teams?
- 12:33SPEAKER_01: That I think we're still a little ways away.
- 12:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think you know this is happening very fast right now.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: Um, but it's hurry up and and wait because the TV deals are driving everything, right?
- 12:45SPEAKER_02: And and you know, I think the SEC is in a good position enough where although those rumors may be true, that specific rumor, you know, we may be looking at two, three years down the road.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: I don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon.
- 12:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, maybe even further than that.
- 13:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, what do you think?
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think you're probably right, but I'll say from a just from a selfish fan perspective, the the idea of the Wahoos hosting my LSU Tigers an hour from my front door, it just gets me really, really excited.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: I just think that's that's pretty because the conference is so big, you'll see them once every eight years.
- 13:18SPEAKER_01: It's better than once every no years, which it is now, but yeah, correct.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: I mean, you're still talking about such massive deals, like so.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: That's you bring up a good point, though.
- 13:26SPEAKER_02: As a fan, you know, we took you know, we're we're looking at it.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: What are your thoughts?
- 13:30SPEAKER_02: Because you've heard so many people say, you know, college football is getting ruined.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I think I think from the purist standpoint, and I think the purists are generally the folks who who kind of more identify with college football like back when it was the 90s, even predating the BCS, when the Fiesta Bowl really meant a lot.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: And there weren't these, you know, this is long before the college football playoff, long before BCS, and you know, regional ties were super important.
- 14:33SPEAKER_01: So, you know, the Colorado-Nebraska rivalry was a huge, huge deal.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Um, and I thought I think they don't recognize, uh, don't recognize where where this is going and probably don't love it.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: I think the more casual younger version of maybe newer college football fans, I mean, I think you could argue it's getting better.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: We're yeah, I think the playoff is probably gonna go from four to eight or four to twelve, and you're gonna see a concentration of more good teams and more conferences, which is on a week to week basis will mean more great football games.
- 15:03SPEAKER_01: Uh so like you know, it's it's I think you can see I can see the good and the bad.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: You know, I I I kind of I kind of yeah, I kind of like to both sides.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: Is that crazy?
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: No, I agree.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: I I I would consider myself a traditionalist in a lot of ways.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: I I love the old school rivalries.
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Um, I think the regular season what makes college football great is that every game in the regular season still matters, right?
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: The bowl games still matter to me.
- 15:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the the the playoff matters, obviously, but like every week there are crazy games that that matter.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, you ask any diehard fan of a certain school whether being bowl eligible matters or not.
- 15:46SPEAKER_02: Does it matter to the national media?
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Maybe not, but does it matter to them?
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah, heck yeah.
- 15:50SPEAKER_02: I want to watch my team play another game, I want to get to the next step in in the program that matters, and that's what's cool about college football because it's that's not true about the NFL.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: No, it is it isn't true.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: I think there's a lot of things where the where the where college football is turning into a version of NFL light in a lot of ways, but it the NFL does not have the alumni bases and these long-term story rivals, which I think are really going to persevere.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: And I hope, I hope they create a world where both of those things can exist, where you can still have great rivalries that really do matter, even to teams that are four and eight and five and seven and can't aren't gonna sniff the playoffs, but also the Titans that we all want to see.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: We want to see Clemson take on Michigan for the national championship, decide who's the best team in the country.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: So I'm hoping that we can create a world where both of those things can really thrive.
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: But we're like you said, it's hurry up and wait.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: It's just gonna be nobody knows the answer to that.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: We're gonna have to just figure out what's gonna happen.
- 16:44SPEAKER_02: No, but I think that one thing, one one step in the right direction that we're making um is that we will see more meaningful games.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: It'll have to go that way.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: The the the you know, Alabama's against your you know, FCS schools, though that will go away.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's going away.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: And that's gonna be good for your average college football fan.
- 17:07SPEAKER_02: You're gonna get to see more power teams play other power teams in the regular season.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: The cupcake games are going away.
- 17:14SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you're I think you're probably right.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, and uh, there's you could argue better for worse when those cupcake teams rely on that money, but from a fan, that's from a fan from a fan's perspective, watching TV's on watching watching the games on TV that things will get better.
- 17:27SPEAKER_01: Well, if that's enough.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: We don't we don't there's so much to still be figured out.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: We could have you and I can speculate for three more shows.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but let's not.
- 17:34SPEAKER_02: Uh we gotta talk NIL.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, let's talk NIL.
- 17:37SPEAKER_01: Now so those of you who don't know, uh uh college football recently um has made it a so schools are not allowed to pay players, but players can now get what are called NIL deals or name, image, and likeness deals.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: They are allowed to go out and get um uh sponsorship compensated uh in exchange for uh appearances, community service, um endorsements, any of those things as long as for being them, their name image as long as they are not wearing a um Georgia jersey and wearing red and black, they can go do it for themselves.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: And this has created this whole world of essentially compensation for players.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: Um, and it's something that a lot of folks would speculate was kind of happening in a black market anyway, and now it's just kind of becoming above.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: It's been behind the scenes for years and years and years.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: I think I think which I think everyone would agree with, but I also but I think what most I think what most folks would also agree is it's it got really big really fast.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: Am I right?
- 18:39SPEAKER_02: Yes, yes.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: Uh it went from non-existing to multi-million dollar deals, allegedly.
- 18:47SPEAKER_02: Again, all this is still happening, it's it's private information, these are all alleged, so no one really knows, um, which makes it a little bit worse.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: It's kind of the wild west right now.
- 18:57SPEAKER_02: The NC NCAA opened Pandora's box and they don't have any way to keep their arms around it.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Um, so it's really just another step away from the NCAA.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Uh the conference realignment is is one, NIL is another.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: This is one of those situations where it's like obviously there's like a purist, there's like a new school of thought.
- 19:20SPEAKER_01: Like, there's a lot of people who believe that obviously they're they're amateur athletes, amateur athletes, at least by tactical definition.
- 19:26SPEAKER_01: I would argue they are not, but I think you could say that for a long time they were.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: And there's also the school of thought that like they they should be compensated for their work, they put their bodies to tremendous risk, their talent is unique, very unique, incredibly valued, but they should be able to capitalize.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: I but is it is it gonna help the game or hurt the game?
- 19:44SPEAKER_01: Kind of like realignment, but I don't think we really know the answer to that either, at least not now.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think um I think the dust will settle.
- 19:52SPEAKER_02: I think when I tune in and watch the players play on Saturdays, it's not gonna matter to me who's getting NIL deals.
- 19:59SPEAKER_02: Not announced from the player's standpoint.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: Um from everything that I've heard is, you know, they're they're for one another taking advantage of the situation, which they should be, you know.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: I think a lot of the the traditionalists and the purists are saying, like, oh, what kind of locker room dynamic is that gonna make?
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: Like, what kind of like it's no different than it's always been.
- 20:24SPEAKER_02: You're gonna have players that have, and you're gonna have some players that have not, you know.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: It's it's yep, players should be taken care of, and that's the way it should have been for a long time.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 20:36SPEAKER_02: When you've got so much money involved, yep.
- 20:39SPEAKER_01: I I'm and I yeah, I can't I don't disagree with anything you're saying.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: And but what how what what it's going to mean for the future of these rosters and how they're developed and how they're grown, recruiting, you know, all you know, transfer, you know, it wasn't that long ago, it was like 10 years ago when like transfers were like pretty far fetched and they usually weren't impact guys and and they had to sit out a year, so it's all still very rapidly unfolding.
- 21:01SPEAKER_01: And the I think the NCAA, I think the conference commission, I think the conference uh leadership and the school leadership, I don't think anybody really knows what to do about it yet.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: I think we're still in I think it's gonna be the wild west for a while, um, while we still figure it out.
- 21:14SPEAKER_01: But that's the big that's one of the big things is college football players, at least for now, are legally allowed to receive compensation from sources uh not affiliated with their schools.
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: And that's go ahead.
- 21:29SPEAKER_02: One major impact that I think you're you're already seeing, uh, which I love and I think is a is a positive because there's been a lot of negativity swirling about about this, especially from traditionalists.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: Uh, but most people, if you ask them that are college football fans, want parody in the game, and they want, you know, you want you you want the upsets, you want different teams winning every year, you know.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: And I think the NIL is the great equalizer.
- 21:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, you look at teams like programs like Miami, you look at various, I mean, look at Tennessee, you look at a lot of programs that have fallen on hard times, but have a huge fan base, huge booster support.
- 22:08SPEAKER_02: Uh, and the NIL allows essentially the backing of those individuals to support the program to allow them to recruit with anybody.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: To get the college football is I've obviously is one with high end talent, as was as we've demonstrated pretty much since every national championship going back to like the 80s.
- 22:28SPEAKER_01: Like you have to have the you have to have the guys to win.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: And all it really takes is one super wealthy, super mega fan, Tennessee fan or Oregon fan.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: Or a Nebraska fan or whoever who now has the ability to step up and help those teams get those guys to take them to the next level.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's I you're very you're very much right.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: It could be it really be it could give a lot of programs that traditionally, at least in the at least in the recent history, who haven't been able to recruit on their level, it gives them a shot.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: It gives them a sh it gives them a gives them another hat on the table, gives them a better chance to land bigger fish.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: So I'm interested.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm watching no matter what, so I can't wait to see how it all's gonna play out.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: But I just who knows.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's a lot of changes and they're all happening very quickly.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: Uh, and a lot, a lot, a lot of them happening at once.
- 23:17SPEAKER_02: So the dust will settle in the next year or so.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Uh so that's what that's that's we're done stuff on NIL.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: Let's talk a little bit about uh head coaching changes.
- 23:26SPEAKER_01: So obviously, head uh college football or programs are driven by these larger than life personality head coaches who get all the blame or all the credit for whenever they win or lose, and they're a lot of them are super high-end talented.
- 23:40SPEAKER_01: A lot of them have moved around a lot.
- 23:42SPEAKER_01: So for this one, we're gonna talk about uh kind of the top 10 most interesting new head coach hires in 2022 and kind of boom or bust why or why not.
- 23:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, I think uh so I'll read some names and we'll just Mike and I'll kind of popcorn a little bit.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Um I'll start with uh the headliner probably has gotta be uh Lincoln Riley.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Uh it's gotta be gotta be Lincoln Riley.
- 24:03SPEAKER_01: Left Oklahoma, went to USC.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: Um, after a long time, he got an amazing contract.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: He's now in the land of sunshine and beaches um in the Pac-12.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm thinking boom.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: What do you think?
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean, it's gotta be a boom.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: He was super successful at Oklahoma.
- 24:24SPEAKER_02: He is walking into USC at traditional power with brand recognition booster backing.
- 24:31SPEAKER_02: He's already recruiting and and getting transfers all over the place.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: I mean, he took like half the class he was bringing to Oklahoma with him to USC.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: So you well, I was gonna say, plus, he's in the Pac-12, but not exactly true anymore.
- 24:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's not true anymore, right?
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, so he he got a little bit of a wake up because he was expecting um a little bit more of a cakewalk.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: Uh, but yeah, it's gotta be a boom.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: He's walking into a great situation and he's gonna do well.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: He's a great coach, he's got he's gonna have great, great players.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: He's that's gotta be a boom for me.
- 25:06SPEAKER_01: It's showtime out there, and I think he's uh he's the young guy who's charismatic, who can attract high-end talent.
- 25:11SPEAKER_01: I think I I think he's gonna do well there.
- 25:13SPEAKER_01: And this is key, and a former employer uh told me this a long time ago.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Whenever you can, make sure you go somewhere where you followed somebody who didn't do that good of a job.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: And Clay Helton didn't do that good of a job.
- 25:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, Lincoln Riley is going to be an upgrade on the field for sure in terms of wins and recruiting.
- 25:29SPEAKER_01: So I he's got his it's he is being dealt a nice hand.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: He has a real chance to hit the ground running really fast.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say boom.
- 25:37SPEAKER_02: He's not following Nick Saban, and he's walking into God help over that.
- 25:41SPEAKER_01: Whoever that guy is, whoever Alabama's next coach is, good luck, man.
- 25:45SPEAKER_01: Good luck.
- 25:46SPEAKER_01: Uh number two, uh Billy Napier, University of Florida.
- 25:49SPEAKER_01: Um taking over a terrible situation over there.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Uh, he came from UL Lafayette, which is a group of five school.
- 25:56SPEAKER_01: He did very well there.
- 25:57SPEAKER_01: Uh right at Louisiana.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: I know you've got strong feelings about Florida.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, what do you think?
- 26:04SPEAKER_02: I can't say boom or bust.
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: I have to say pump the brakes on this one because there have been so many coaches that we've seen win at high levels at those lower tier programs that you think are just the next superstar head coach.
- 26:20SPEAKER_02: You know, look at in our own backyard, Justin Fuente.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: I thought that was a home run hire for the hokies.
- 26:25SPEAKER_02: He did fantastic at Memphis and just for whatever reason couldn't put it together.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: Um, I also think that for Florida, anyway, their fan base and their administration has to get out of the way.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: So Napier can recruit and need an at an elite level, and I think he's a he's a great coach.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: Um, but the rest remains to be seen.
- 26:47SPEAKER_02: And as you know, when you're a head coach at a big time program, every little thing has to line up for you to to to succeed.
- 26:56SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say bus for for because I was so wrong on the last two.
- 27:00SPEAKER_01: I thought Will Muschamp was gonna work out, and I thought really thought Dan Mullen was gonna work out, and both of those guys kind of had a lot of heated debates over Dan Mullen, I think.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I really I was I've I was really bullish on him for a long time.
- 27:10SPEAKER_01: I think I'm gonna take an L on that one.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: He uh he didn't work out, and maybe it wasn't his fault.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: Maybe Florida has more instructional issues, but maybe it's administration getting in his way.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Maybe they're maybe they're expecting Urban Meyer to walk back in there.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: I don't really I don't know who was there a decade ago and did really did a lot of great things.
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say bust because um I don't know what's why he I can't I don't understand why the last two guys didn't do well.
- 27:31SPEAKER_01: So for that reason, I'm gonna ride that losing streak until somebody proves otherwise.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: Um so I'm gonna I'm I am bearish on Billy Napier as well.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: Uh number three, Mario Christoball.
- 27:41SPEAKER_01: Uh took the job from Oregon, did a pretty good job over there, and is now the head coach of Miami.
- 27:46SPEAKER_01: Uh I'll start with this one.
- 27:48SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say boom.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: I actually really like that roster, I like that team.
- 27:51SPEAKER_01: I think Tyler Van Dyke, which I'll have got some takes on later in the show.
- 27:54SPEAKER_01: I'll tell you about more.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: He's a great quarterback.
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: Um, and I just think he's a darn good coach.
- 27:58SPEAKER_01: I didn't think he was gonna win at Oregon, and he did.
- 28:00SPEAKER_01: Um, I think Miami's an easier place to win than Oregon, to be honest.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: So I'm I'm thinking boom.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm saying boom 100%.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: Um he him when I I'm I'm just like you.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: I I thought his success at Oregon was a surprise for me.
- 28:18SPEAKER_02: I think he's shown that he can coach quarterbacks well.
- 28:22SPEAKER_02: And Miami, of course, being in Florida, has all the talent in the world in their backyard, and he's already been shown to have tons of support from not only administration, but more importantly, the community as it comes to uh the NIL situation.
- 28:40SPEAKER_02: He's already been, they've been throwing money around, they're recruiting well, way, way above their their uh recent success level.
- 28:48SPEAKER_02: So yeah, yeah.
- 28:49SPEAKER_01: No, uh Mario Chris Ball has his eyes wide open about a lot of things, which I think is only going to benefit Miami for sure.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: Uh, next one, uh my head coach, Brian Kelly.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: You of course it was Brian Kelly, uh took the job uh after a really successful stint at Notre Dame, is taking the job at LSU.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: Obviously, take everything I say with a grain of salt, given my um loyal allegiance to LSU, but I'm super I'm super bullish for a couple of reasons.
- 29:14SPEAKER_01: One, we've hired three straight national championship coaches dating back to Saban.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: The last three guys have won there.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: LSU is a great place to coach football.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: You've got a you've got lockdown, an easy place to coach football.
- 29:26SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't say easy.
- 29:27SPEAKER_01: It's a great place to do college football.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: Tons of talent, great alumni, great stadium, great things.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: And what I love about Brian Kelly is Brian Kelly um has proved has proven that he can get quarterbacks to play at a high level and offensive lines to play at a super high level, which have been two things that LSU historically, at least in the last 20 years, haven't been as good as.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: LSU's always, you know, their their calling card has been receivers, defensive backs, defensive linemen, with the exception and obviously Joe Burrow.
- 29:55SPEAKER_01: But like for the most part, we're on that side of the ball where we make our notoriety.
- 29:58SPEAKER_01: So Brett, so uh Brian Kelly brings this offensive line pedigree and quarterback pedigree to an already pretty good situation.
- 30:08SPEAKER_01: I'm feeling pretty good.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, what choice do I have, right?
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Brian Kelly is a real nerd.
- 30:15SPEAKER_02: If you've seen his recruiting videos and you've seen him dancing with the recruits, he is the cringiest coach you'll ever see.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: Don't care.
- 30:25SPEAKER_02: But that does not mean that I don't think that he will do well there.
- 30:31SPEAKER_02: Um, I think he's been handed the keys to a Ferrari and he knows how to run a program.
- 30:38SPEAKER_02: He's been handcuffed for years by the academic situation at Notre Dame, some of the highbrow beast.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: What do you mean when you say that for our listeners?
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: When you say academic situation, what do you mean?
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Well, very simply put, um, a lot of guys can't get into Notre Dame that can get into LSU.
- 31:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's a very simple situation.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: Uh, Notre Dame is a more prestigious academic university, and I don't mean that to throw shade at LSU.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 31:10SPEAKER_02: That's the way they want things, and that is a handcuff to a college football coach.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: So um he has done very well there.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: Um, granted, it's a step up in competition, but he is not, he's been around, he knows what he's getting himself into, he knows how to run a program at this level, especially at a place like LSU, when you have recruit such high-level recruiting in your own backyard, you are more the CEO than anything.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: And if you know how to delegate, you know how to make good hires, uh, and you can bring in that talent, which LSU can, anybody at LSU can, at O'Giron proved that.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, he's gonna do fine.
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: He's gonna do really well.
- 31:53SPEAKER_02: He should be winning nine, 10 games every year.
- 31:56SPEAKER_02: I mean, plus, so boom.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm saying boom too.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: I'm a little SEC West has gotten a lot tougher, obviously, with Jimbo Fisher and Lane Kiffin, but I'm he's he's gonna do well, he's gonna recruit.
- 32:06SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm obviously bullish on my team's head coach.
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: Shock.
- 32:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh you should be correct.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Uh number four, uh that's the next one, uh Brent Venables.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: Brent Venables, defensive former defensive coordinator at Clemson was there on Dabo staff for like 12 years, put out some of the nation's best defenses for a long time, very long time.
- 32:24SPEAKER_01: Took the Oklahoma job.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, you go first.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: I think he's gonna do well.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: He's been waiting, he's been basically waiting for the perfect situation to walk into.
- 32:35SPEAKER_04: Correct.
- 32:35SPEAKER_02: Um, he is it's a little bit of a changeup for them because they're obviously moving from a very offensive-minded head coach to a defensive-minded head coach, but he's shown that he can recruit well.
- 32:46SPEAKER_02: Oklahoma will recruit automatically in a lot of ways.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna say boom.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, that's all I gotta say.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say bust.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: I don't, you know, because he's uh he isn't a super offensive.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: I'm not convinced that his defense will translate to the Big 12 brand of football.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: Um, I love the fact that he went out and got Dylan Grabriel, who is a great quarterback out of UCF.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: I think that's I think a lot of people wanted him.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: He's uh yeah, he they should.
- 33:11SPEAKER_01: He's like a he's probably a top 10 college football quarterback this year, and quarterback goes a long way in the game of football, as we all know.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I just he has no experience.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: He's stepping into a monster job.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: Um, Oklahoma doesn't think he's in over his head over his head.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: I think he might be overhead.
- 33:24SPEAKER_01: I don't blame him for waiting for the perfect job because Oklahoma is a blue chip pedigree, top of the mountain college football program that people spend their lives trying to get and they never do, and he got it and he's earned it.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: He's earned given what he's done at Clemson under Dabo's staff, two national championships, he's 100% earned his shot.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: If I'm Oklahoma though, I want somebody more experienced.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: They must really he must have killed the interview.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: He must have killed the interview.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: I will say, if so, looking at it objectively, I think he's gonna do well.
- 33:50SPEAKER_02: But if I was an Oklahoma fan, and and if you're a fan of any of these top tier programs, these coaches don't grow on trees, but you want the one who has shown the head coach that has shown that they can win and they've done it at an elite level, but there's only like a handful of those coaches, and they don't they don't make a lot of changes, so that's what you get.
- 34:12SPEAKER_01: That's what you get.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: So we'll see.
- 34:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, I could I could very easily be wrong without that.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: I mean, like I said, Dylan Gabriel's a great piece, and like I said, if like if anybody in the Big 12 can start playing defense and you can maintain your offense at somewhere near Oklahoma's offense, and Oklahoma's offense has been amazing under Lincoln Riley and Bob Stutz.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: So we'll see.
- 34:29SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I'm saying bust for now.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: Um, before we talk about the UVA tech ones, let's talk quickly about um the other two that we want to talk about.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Dan Lanning, um, the new guy at Oregon.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: He is 36 years old.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: He is two years younger than I am, which is makes me sad on so many levels.
- 34:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're failing in a lot of ways.
- 34:47SPEAKER_01: I am not ahead, I'm not Division I foul college football coach.
- 34:49SPEAKER_01: I probably should be by now.
- 34:50SPEAKER_01: Uh I should have probably received that call.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Um, Dan Lanning, new coach at uh um Oregon.
- 34:57SPEAKER_01: He was the defensive coordinator of Georgia.
- 34:58SPEAKER_01: Is that right?
- 34:59SPEAKER_01: Is that my is that where he came from?
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: I'm pretty sure it's where he came, I'm pretty sure it's where he came from.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh yes.
- 35:04SPEAKER_01: Question mark.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: I think so.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: I'm almost positive where he came from.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: Uh I'll Google that really quick.
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: Anyway, really young guy.
- 35:10SPEAKER_01: He um took over uh Mario Crystal Ball.
- 35:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he got Bo Nicks to show up, which is pretty good, the former Auburn quarterback.
- 35:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, and they have they they have a pretty stout defense, some players over there.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Um I'm gonna say boom with an inflection at the end because I won I think he's gonna do well.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know but I don't how well do 36-year-olds recruit to to Eugene Oregon.
- 35:33SPEAKER_02: I I kind of I kind of feel like this is a slow bust.
- 35:38SPEAKER_02: I feel like they've got enough talent there to do well this year.
- 35:43SPEAKER_02: Um, but that program is will be trending downward, I think.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: Interesting.
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: Even yeah, even the NIL deal with our with arguably the greatest, arguably the greatest booster in the history of college football on their staff on their team.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was talking about because go ahead.
- 36:03SPEAKER_02: Phil Knight, yep.
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Phil Knight, you know, because Nike, right.
- 36:06SPEAKER_02: When all this shakes out, I just don't think that they have the the TV market and the brand recognition to have the staying power if we're go if we're moving to towards the conference realignment that we think we are.
- 36:22SPEAKER_02: And I and I think they're gonna be there are so many of their neighbors that they will be outrecruited by and overshadowed by.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: See, Oregon's a one Oregon is one of the four schools that haven't really been spoken for yet.
- 36:32SPEAKER_01: I Oregon, UW, Notre Dame, and which is probably gonna stay independent, and Miami.
- 36:37SPEAKER_02: Notre Dame's fighting to stay independent.
- 36:39SPEAKER_01: Those are kind of the four big brands of college football left, not the AC, not in the SEC, or assuming those four that we talked about earlier are gonna go.
- 36:47SPEAKER_01: Those are the kind of the other four that I feel like are gonna I expect Oregon to join the Big Ten sometime in the next 10 years.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: But I mean that's a that's a hot take.
- 36:57SPEAKER_01: Who knows what they're gonna do?
- 36:58SPEAKER_01: We're talking about Dan Laning.
- 36:59SPEAKER_01: Um, I just again I'm I'm uh I'm I I'll believe it when I see it.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: You know, kind of like Brent Venables.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: Like I think Oregon probably made a good hire.
- 37:08SPEAKER_01: Um, but I'm I'm not static yet.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: I can't I can't.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's not the hire you want if you're an Oregon fan.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: That's another one of those where he's just he's got no track record.
- 37:19SPEAKER_01: Yep, yep, we'll see.
- 37:21SPEAKER_01: Uh Marcus Freeman.
- 37:22SPEAKER_01: Quickly, quickly, yeah.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: Former defensive coordinator under on Brian Kelly staff, Notre Dame got picked up, got upgraded to the head coach of Notre Dame.
- 37:29SPEAKER_01: He inherit he is inheriting a great roster, the best offensive line in the country this year.
- 37:34SPEAKER_01: Um, he's got uh he's got weapons.
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: I I expect Notre Dame to win double digit games this year.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: Can he maintain it?
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: Probably.
- 37:41SPEAKER_01: Um, so I'm gonna say boom.
- 37:43SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think he booms on the level that Notre Dame has been booming at, where they're respectable and pushing to that upper tier level every year, but can't quite get there.
- 37:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe, maybe he's he's an excellent coach.
- 37:57SPEAKER_02: He's within the program that is sustained at a high level.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: I don't think he pushes them over the top, but I think he keeps them right about where they've been.
- 38:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I think when right about where they've been is you know, fifth, sixth, seventh, the end of the year, 10, 10, 2, 9 and 3, 11 and 1.
- 38:11SPEAKER_01: Maybe make the playoffs.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: Fantastic.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and maybe every now they make the playoffs, typically get their tails whooped by uh the Clemson's Ohio states of the world, but they're there, they're there.
- 38:20SPEAKER_01: So um knocking on the door.
- 38:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, they're so uh I I think I think Marcus Freeman's gonna have a run kind of like Brian Kelly's.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: I you know, Brian Kelly went to LSU because he wanted I think he wanted to recruit better and have a chance to win it all.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: And I think Marcus Freeman's gonna have the exact same problem.
- 38:34SPEAKER_01: I don't I don't think he's gonna agreed.
- 38:36SPEAKER_02: I will 100% agree with you with on that that exact take.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: Uh good stuff.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: Last two on these are important to us because we're gonna talk about these teams a lot uh this season.
- 38:47SPEAKER_01: Uh UVA and Virginia Tech changed coaches this season.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: I can't remember the last time both teams changed coaches the same year.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: Uh let's talk about uh Mike's gonna Mike's gonna take the lead on Virginia Tech this year.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna take the lead on UVA.
- 39:00SPEAKER_01: Uh Brent Pry, former DC uh on uh from Penn State on Franklin staff.
- 39:05SPEAKER_01: He's a new head coach uh at Virginia Tech.
- 39:09SPEAKER_01: What do you got?
- 39:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: Real quickly, I just wanted to point out we are gonna try to take a deeper dive into Virginia Tech and UVA to give our home state fans a little bit more love.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: And so um stay tuned for that because that's gonna be fun.
- 39:26SPEAKER_02: We're gonna give them a little bit more love.
- 39:28SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna watch more UVA football this year than I have in 10 years.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: I can't wait.
- 39:32SPEAKER_01: Wahu wa.
- 39:33SPEAKER_02: Well, they're much better, they're gonna be more fun to watch.
- 39:35SPEAKER_01: So they are gonna be fun to watch this year, they are gonna be fun to watch this year.
- 39:38SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, but tell me about Brent Pry.
- 39:40SPEAKER_02: Brent Pry coming from James Franklin's staff, he's the DC there.
- 39:44SPEAKER_02: Um, it's not a sexy hire, he's done well.
- 39:48SPEAKER_02: He doesn't have again.
- 39:51SPEAKER_02: This is another one.
- 39:52SPEAKER_02: If you're a Virginia Tech fan, you're looking for head coaching experience.
- 39:56SPEAKER_02: But coming off of the the Justin Fuente experiment, um, you're looking for somebody different.
- 40:03SPEAKER_02: And this is somebody different.
- 40:04SPEAKER_02: He's not a head coach, he's not an offensive-minded guy, he's DC who's looking to take the next step.
- 40:09SPEAKER_02: He's been groomed.
- 40:11SPEAKER_02: Um, he's got to show that he can recruit, he's got to recruit better than they've recruited.
- 40:17SPEAKER_02: I think that he is a boom for Virginia Tech.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: I don't think he's a national boom.
- 40:24SPEAKER_02: I think he makes them relevant in the ACC.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: I think they make some waves.
- 40:29SPEAKER_02: I don't think he's fired in in two or three years.
- 40:32SPEAKER_02: I think that they are sticking with him for um a little bit longer time frame to see how it pans out.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say boom for sure.
- 40:41SPEAKER_01: I'm actually I'm mostly really bullish on this move.
- 40:44SPEAKER_01: I know I mean I've I've kind of already I've kind of already uh dismissed coordinators making the leap to head coach pre earlier in this list.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: But the reason I like him so much is given his defensive pedigree and the brand of football that he's played on the other stops fits right into what Virginia Tech is.
- 40:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, Virginia Tech at its at its heart, they want to get back to beamer ball.
- 41:01SPEAKER_01: I know offenses have modernized, they gotta call it something else, though.
- 41:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, obviously don't call it beamer ball anymore.
- 41:07SPEAKER_01: It's really it's a really good idea.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Um, but they want to get back to playing good defense, which they're gonna do this year.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: I think they have the horses to do that this year, and they want to get back to running the ball really well.
- 41:15SPEAKER_01: And I think Brent Pry is a guy that can actually lead their team to do both um and compete for at the very least uh the ACC division, and every now and then the conference, who knows, mix it up.
- 41:27SPEAKER_01: Um, I I really like the Brent Pry move at um Virginia Tech.
- 41:31SPEAKER_01: And I think if he can I think if you can get the right character guys from Hampton Roads and parts of the state, and again with NIL, who knows?
- 41:37SPEAKER_01: There maybe there's a famous hokey out there with a pile of cash in the DC area who would love to upgrade uh help upgrade Virginia Tech's roster.
- 41:44SPEAKER_02: So well, one thing I'll point out is that Penn State has actually recruited really hard in in the Commonwealth.
- 41:52SPEAKER_02: And so some of those ties from from Penn State's recruiting, you know, some of those relationships may carry over to his own.
- 42:00SPEAKER_01: That's definitely gonna help.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: They have, yeah.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you know, anytime you establish pipelines like that, when you just know the coaches, you know the people in those areas, this can definitely gonna bear fruit.
- 42:08SPEAKER_01: So that that was probably something else that I'm sure uh what's the AD's name?
- 42:12SPEAKER_01: Babcock, I think.
- 42:13SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm sure he considered that when he when he when he pulled the well, we've talked about it.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: UVA and Virginia Tech have both been bad at in-state recruiting.
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: A lot too many Virginia athletes have been exiting the state border.
- 42:27SPEAKER_02: That's I agree.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: Could I I agree?
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: And sorry for the last 10-15 years, but I think we're both high.
- 42:32SPEAKER_01: I think we're both bullish mostly on Brent Pry.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Is that right?
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 42:35SPEAKER_02: I think that's a good hire.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: Uh, other high, Tony Elliott, uh former offensive coordinator uh for uh Clemson.
- 42:41SPEAKER_01: The they lost both coordinators this year.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: A little tough that's supposed to be a big loss for Clemson, big losses for Clemson.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Tony Elliott did a fabulous job um with uh previous uh quarterback, specifically Trevor Lawrence.
- 42:52SPEAKER_01: DJ Ugalay had a rough year last year.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: Clemson's offense was I it felt like an outline.
- 42:57SPEAKER_01: DJ Uyangalale.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: He felt like he had a rough season, so I'm not gonna judge Elliott on that, but he is a good offense and he is inheriting a really good offense.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah.
- 43:09SPEAKER_01: Uh Brandon Armstrong's awesome quarterback.
- 43:11SPEAKER_01: They have two phenomenal receivers.
- 43:12SPEAKER_01: Their offensive line's question mark, but they've got great ball carriers as well.
- 43:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I think he's gonna do, I think Brandon Armstrong's gonna have a monster season this year.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: I think I think he's gonna breathe some new life into uh UVA.
- 43:24SPEAKER_01: Their offensive line is a big issue, their defense has question marks everywhere.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: Can they recruit?
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: They also have a lot of the same Notre Dame-esque issues with in terms of high academic high academic pedigree, which were real problems for uh previous UVA coaches that before who I mean uh Bronco Meninhall, um, and before him, who's who's the guy between Bronco and Algor and Algro?
- 43:48SPEAKER_01: I'm blanking on the name also.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: Mike London.
- 43:50SPEAKER_02: Um London.
- 43:51SPEAKER_02: London.
- 43:52SPEAKER_02: I I was actually very surprised that that they let Bronco go.
- 43:57SPEAKER_01: Well, I think I think I think it was kind of a he made some I think it was a kind of a mutual ways thing, but I'm surprised UVA didn't make a greater effort to keep him.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: It sounds like the administration was ready to part with him.
- 44:09SPEAKER_01: We'll never know the full story there, obviously.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: Um, but I I also was surprised to see they not work it out because they've I thought Yeah, if you've if if you're a fan listening and you've got the full story, let us know because I'm that's a head scratcher for me.
- 44:23SPEAKER_02: I thought Bronco was doing a pretty good job there.
- 44:24SPEAKER_01: Me too.
- 44:25SPEAKER_01: I I thought he was elevating, and honestly, and anytime, especially at the collegiate level, anytime you can play quarterback at a high level, and UVA certainly had some problems with the football team, but they put they've played quarterback at a high level under Bronco, and I expect that you can win, you can win, and I Expect that part to continue with Tony Elliott, but it's the other structural issues that UVA has to compete with.
- 44:45SPEAKER_01: I don't know if Tony Elliott is the guy.
- 44:47SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm gonna say small boom.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna say a bing, a bop, I'm gonna say a tiny bong, tiny, not a boom, a little boom, yeah, tiny boom.
- 44:57SPEAKER_01: Um, because I'm just I'm optimistic about him, but my confidence is I don't know, glass half full.
- 45:03SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna leave it that.
- 45:04SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I have everyone wanted Tony Elliott.
- 45:08SPEAKER_02: He's an he's one of those guys that he was interviewing all over, he was waiting for the right position.
- 45:15SPEAKER_02: For whatever reason, everyone jumped ship on Clemson, and um I think he's gonna do well at UVA.
- 45:23SPEAKER_02: I don't think you can boom truly boom at UVA, just to be honest.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: You know, I maybe they can prove me wrong, but um, I think he will boom as best as anyone can at that program.
- 45:34SPEAKER_01: And I think we should I think Mike and I probably should probably should qualify that all of these boomer buses are relative to expectations.
- 45:39SPEAKER_01: Brent Venables is expected to compete for a national championship at Oklahoma.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: I don't think he will.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: Um, yes, Tony Elliott and Brent Pry are not expected to compete for national championships, at least not in the near term.
- 45:49SPEAKER_01: I think it's all relative to that program's history, you know.
- 45:54SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah.
- 45:54SPEAKER_02: For for for for UVA, Tony Elliott is a clear boom for me.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 45:59SPEAKER_01: You know what Lincoln Riley's expectations are, what Brian Kelly's expectations are, they're not all the same.
- 46:04SPEAKER_01: So we should probably should have clarified that before that segment.
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: But you probably pick if you've listened this far, you get it.
- 46:09SPEAKER_01: Um, anything other thing on the on the coaching carousel before we move on?
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: No, we should move on.
- 46:13SPEAKER_01: We probably spent way too long on that anyway.
- 46:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's probably true.
- 46:16SPEAKER_01: So let's talk about what's actually going to happen this year.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: So for this last segment of the show, we're gonna talk about bold predictions.
- 46:22SPEAKER_01: Mike and I are gonna each give you a couple predictions.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna fire him off at Mike.
- 46:25SPEAKER_01: He's gonna dunk on me, he'll do the same.
- 46:27SPEAKER_01: Tell me how dumb.
- 46:28SPEAKER_01: I'll tell him how dumb how dumb he is.
- 46:29SPEAKER_02: I don't I might I might agree with you.
- 46:31SPEAKER_02: I haven't heard yours.
- 46:32SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it's it's true.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: It's true.
- 46:34SPEAKER_01: And what what the fun thing is, we're gonna do is we're gonna revisit this in December.
- 46:39SPEAKER_01: We're gonna do a re a remix episode or something, and we'll talk about uh these takes.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: Maybe we'll sprinkle in some of the coaches and transfers as well.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Um and we'll we'll we'll talk about what these takes were.
- 46:49SPEAKER_01: Uh bowl prediction number one, 2022 season.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: University of Southern California coming off a terrible season with Clay Helton, hired uh Lincoln Riley, got Caleb Williams, got Jordan Addison, the Blitnikov winner.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: They're gonna go 11-1, win the pack, and go to the playoffs in year one.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: USC is gonna be red hot this year.
- 47:12SPEAKER_01: I know I like what Utah's doing.
- 47:14SPEAKER_01: I know Oregon's talented.
- 47:15SPEAKER_01: I don't think either of those teams are gonna be able to are gonna be able to score points with USC.
- 47:19SPEAKER_01: I think USC is gonna show up and do big things.
- 47:22SPEAKER_01: 11-1 playoff berth, season one for Lincoln Riley.
- 47:26SPEAKER_01: Bold prediction.
- 47:27SPEAKER_01: What do you got?
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: I don't think that's that bold.
- 47:29SPEAKER_02: I think you're an idiot for saying that it's even bold.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: They were terrible last season.
- 47:34SPEAKER_02: Go on, tell me why.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: Because if you look at their Vegas odds to win 10 plus regular season games, it's like fifth, fifth best in the country.
- 47:45SPEAKER_02: So it's not that bold.
- 47:47SPEAKER_01: They have they do have big questions on defense.
- 47:50SPEAKER_01: Although I do like Alex Grinch.
- 47:51SPEAKER_01: Alex Grinch has been with him, his Oklahoma days, he's been a polarizing figure, but I think there's enough talent there.
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: Um that I mean their receivers were already amazing, and then they got the Blitnikov warner, the Blitnikov winner and Jordan Addison from Pitt.
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: Um to join them.
- 48:05SPEAKER_02: Huge get.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: Huge get.
- 48:06SPEAKER_01: And Lincoln Riley runs super balanced offenses.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: Um, but you don't think it's bold going tripling their win total from last season?
- 48:16SPEAKER_01: I I don't think it's bold because Vegas doesn't think it's bold.
- 48:19SPEAKER_02: So who am I to go in the face of Vegas?
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: They went four and eight last year.
- 48:23SPEAKER_01: If they I think if they go from four and eight to eleven and one and a conference win, twelve and one, playoff birth, yeah.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: It's it's it's bold outside of everyone telling me that it's not.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 48:35SPEAKER_02: So I can't give you credit because everyone believes in that happening.
- 48:40SPEAKER_02: So yes, I think I think you are you're bold for saying that.
- 48:44SPEAKER_02: I think there's a good probability of it happening, which leads me into my bold prediction.
- 48:49SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: I think that there will be another new entry into the college football playoff this year.
- 48:56SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 48:57SPEAKER_02: Who new new as in has since a brand new, never been in the college football playoff, will have another new face in the college football playoff this year.
- 49:06SPEAKER_01: I think I do you know who's who do we know who it's gonna be against the no?
- 49:10SPEAKER_02: That's not my prediction.
- 49:11SPEAKER_02: No, I'm not, I'm not no no no, I'm not going out on that far of a limb.
- 49:15SPEAKER_02: Um, what I'm saying is you look at the history of the college football playoff.
- 49:19SPEAKER_02: Of course, you've got you know, your Georgias, your Alabama's, your um Michigan State, you've got Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Cincinnati, Notre Dame.
- 49:30SPEAKER_02: Um, I've probably missed one.
- 49:32SPEAKER_02: Oregon, state.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: Yep, yeah.
- 49:34SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: So the list is not that long.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 49:38SPEAKER_02: So who we're looking at realistically, if we look at it this year, realistically, we're looking at maybe Texas AM, maybe USC.
- 49:48SPEAKER_02: Texas even has odds to get in there.
- 49:51SPEAKER_02: Um, who else?
- 49:53SPEAKER_02: Who else would be somebody to upset the hierarchy?
- 49:56SPEAKER_02: Baylor, maybe.
- 49:57SPEAKER_01: So I was so that that's a that's a really good transition.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: So I actually I actually love your bold prediction.
- 50:02SPEAKER_01: I want to make fun of you for it, but I don't love it because that's basically my second, my second one.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: Baylor, I think, is gonna be the team to win the big 12, and they're gonna get they are gonna get in.
- 50:10SPEAKER_01: They have that bold.
- 50:11SPEAKER_01: The big 12 is wide open, and Baylor is clearly the best turn off last year.
- 50:15SPEAKER_01: Baylor has never been into playoff.
- 50:17SPEAKER_01: So I so it's bold they're gonna get there.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: They were two and seven a year ago.
- 50:20SPEAKER_01: They had a miraculous season, went 12 and two.
- 50:22SPEAKER_01: It was actually this prediction was actually a two-parter.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: It was Baylor is gonna win the Big 12 and go to the playoff, and Clemson is not.
- 50:30SPEAKER_01: Clemson is not gonna go.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: Baylor is gonna replace Clemson in the playoffs.
- 50:37SPEAKER_02: Okay, so first off, you know we both love Dave Viranda, and we're both big believers in him, and we both loved what he did last year.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 50:44SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't think that this prediction specifically is that bolt just because the Big 12 is wide open, but you're killing me because my next prediction was that Clemson would not win the ACC.
- 50:57SPEAKER_02: We should we're gonna rename this mild predictions.
- 51:01SPEAKER_02: We're gonna rename this.
- 51:02SPEAKER_02: You just predict something right into what I'm gonna say.
- 51:06SPEAKER_02: Uh yeah, all of this unscripted, by the way, because we did not talk about this prior.
- 51:11SPEAKER_01: No, um, by design.
- 51:12SPEAKER_01: Maybe for 2023 we talked about this, but we do this ahead of time.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: We have this.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: I tried to, I told you.
- 51:17SPEAKER_02: I tried to get you to tell me what they were.
- 51:18SPEAKER_01: Uh well, these these last couple you were not gonna have this issue with because we're talking right now we're talking about all the playoffs, but no, I well, let's talk real super quickly about Clemson.
- 51:26SPEAKER_01: They lost both coordinators, DJ Ougalay was a m was a mess last year.
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 51:32SPEAKER_01: I don't think I I they're bringing back a ton on defense, or defensive line is probably the best in the country.
- 51:37SPEAKER_01: I get that.
- 51:38SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know that Dabo can do it without Elliott and Venables full stop.
- 51:42SPEAKER_02: No, they're they're I I debated back and forth on whether I wanted to make this prediction because their schedule is almost Charmin Soft.
- 51:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, they it's it's super easy, and their defense is gonna be stout again.
- 51:58SPEAKER_02: Like so good, and they're so talented.
- 52:00SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's for them to even lose two games in the regular season, you know, with the talent they have on the roster is a bolt prediction in and of itself.
- 52:11SPEAKER_02: I just think the ACC is much better this year.
- 52:14SPEAKER_02: There's a lot more competition.
- 52:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think there's a lot more opportunities for for slip-ups and for other teams to kind of take that that crown.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: The ACC is deep at quarterback of all places.
- 52:28SPEAKER_01: The ACC, the Sam Hartman, Tyler Van Dyke, Brendan Armstrong, uh, that's just a couple three.
- 52:33SPEAKER_01: Obviously, DJ, um, they've got a ton, uh, Dennis Leary, NC State.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: Um, they've got a ton of real uh uh Phil Dracovic, Keaton Slovis, they've got quarterbacks everywhere, they got quarterbacks anywhere.
- 52:46SPEAKER_01: And we said it like 20 minutes ago.
- 52:47SPEAKER_01: If you got a quarterback who's a gamer, who's ready to go, like you can beat anybody.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: I absolutely I totally agree with you given what what's given the firepower in the ACC at quarterback, it's probably the best quarterback conference in the country.
- 53:00SPEAKER_01: In fact, I'm I'm I'm gonna go ahead and say that as well.
- 53:03SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, Clemson can lose, especially the only thing that makes me pump my brakes on on this prediction.
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: Just if I'm gonna backpedal just for a minute, is that they start the season with Georgia Tech.
- 53:14SPEAKER_02: I think they've got they've got like three cupcakes after that.
- 53:18SPEAKER_02: They're not gonna we're not gonna truly know it.
- 53:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, they're gonna have plenty of time to figure it out.
- 53:25SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 53:25SPEAKER_02: And and and DJ Owen Anguilale might not be the starting quarterback midseason, and that might mean they've figured it out.
- 53:33SPEAKER_01: That was my next question.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: Is like who so I mean, like, you know, is who fix is who's able to fix him?
- 53:37SPEAKER_01: Obviously, we saw we liked what we saw two years ago.
- 53:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, he he played really well in spot work when uh Trevor Lawrence was hurt.
- 53:43SPEAKER_01: Last year, the the it it should everything was set up to go really well, and everything was just the opposite.
- 53:49SPEAKER_01: Um, the offensive but they still finish with the great season on paper season on paper.
- 53:54SPEAKER_01: Offensive line will be better as well.
- 53:56SPEAKER_01: Um, but yeah, I'm with you.
- 53:57SPEAKER_01: Clemson is not going to the playoffs.
- 53:59SPEAKER_02: By the way, Dabo, all in on DJ in ACC media days.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: Well, of course he is, and good for him.
- 54:06SPEAKER_01: At least he's he's he's gonna he's gonna stick by his kid.
- 54:08SPEAKER_01: I would I expect you know, I got a lot of strong opinions about Dabo, um, but especially with him doing the gritty in a in a uh pink uh blazer, which was a couple weeks ago.
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: That was almost Brian Kelly cringe worthy.
- 54:19SPEAKER_02: He was doing just below Shane Beamer cringe worthy.
- 54:22SPEAKER_01: He was a fundraiser for a great cause, and I give a lot of credit for doing a lot of raising money for the community, but that might be the most cringiest thing I've ever seen as a college football fan.
- 54:30SPEAKER_01: But Dabo loves that.
- 54:31SPEAKER_01: That's that's kind of he's a soundbite quarter coat coach.
- 54:34SPEAKER_02: I think it's hilarious watching middle-aged white dudes try to look hard with teens.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, between him, Shane, Shane, Shane Beamer, and a couple others.
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: I mean, they're they're they're happy to do it.
- 54:46SPEAKER_01: They get they're happy to try and get the try and get the clout.
- 54:48SPEAKER_01: So anyway, of course, that's not what Clemson.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: All right, um, moving on.
- 54:52SPEAKER_01: Mel Tucker, Michigan State University's coach, who Michigan State loves.
- 54:57SPEAKER_01: And they gave him all in on last year.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: All in.
- 54:59SPEAKER_01: They gave him deservedly so bag.
- 55:02SPEAKER_01: He got a massive deal um along the lines of any major college football coach.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: Really, really like him a lot.
- 55:09SPEAKER_01: The bad news is, and this is my bold prediction, he's gonna finish fifth in his division this year.
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: Fifth place.
- 55:16SPEAKER_01: He's gonna finish behind Michigan, who's gonna be awesome again.
- 55:19SPEAKER_01: Ohio State, who's going to be really awesome again.
- 55:22SPEAKER_01: Penn State, who will be who I think is gonna who's gonna rebound, rebound.
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: And I'm not sure who the who the fourth team, something weird's gonna happen, something fluky.
- 55:29SPEAKER_01: I'm expecting a major regression.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: I like Peyton Thorne.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm glad he's back.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: Kenneth Walker, the third, is the all-American running back, is gone.
- 55:35SPEAKER_01: You're not replacing him.
- 55:37SPEAKER_01: You still have humongous problems in your secondary, as far as I can tell.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: Remember when uh Ohio State put a 70 burger on them?
- 55:44SPEAKER_01: Yes, but obviously that Ohio State did that to a lot of people.
- 55:48SPEAKER_01: I they did, but um that's a lot of points for a team that's supposed to have a top flight coach and pretty good talent.
- 55:55SPEAKER_01: Michigan State isn't Columbus, but you know, they get pretty good, pretty good teams, and they got shellaced.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm expecting and then and frankly, I still I mean we said we said this last year.
- 56:06SPEAKER_01: So go ahead.
- 56:08SPEAKER_02: Are you thinking they crash and burn?
- 56:10SPEAKER_01: Are you thinking, you know, they they I think fifth place for them in the what's their record?
- 56:15SPEAKER_02: Their uh record last year, fifth place puts them no no fifth place puts them what eight wins.
- 56:21SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, with non-conference seven wins, five wins and five.
- 56:25SPEAKER_01: You know, I mean like I said, uh Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, I think are all gonna finish ahead of them.
- 56:30SPEAKER_01: The team that's gonna be plucky and fun to watch this year and score a bajillion points and give a team like Michigan State heck, Maryland, Talia, Tonga Vailoa, um Jermaine Burton, they've got some wide receivers who are not Jermaine Burton, Rakeem Jarrett, excuse me.
- 56:43SPEAKER_01: They've got weapons out there.
- 56:44SPEAKER_01: Maryland is gonna be really under the radar, fun team to watch this year.
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: Given how many push points they're gonna score, given who their quarterback, who their coaches, who their receivers are, they could easily beat Michigan State and to take fourth in that division.
- 56:58SPEAKER_02: That that fourth spot could be a Purdue.
- 57:01SPEAKER_02: Could be uh their offense is out of control.
- 57:04SPEAKER_01: Purdue's in the west, but I mean, I yeah, I mean Aiden Okada.
- 57:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think we're we're talking overall big division.
- 57:10SPEAKER_01: I'm saying fifth in just the east.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, geez.
- 57:13SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, too bold, my friend.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: I told you they get bolder.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: I told you they get bold better.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: Meaning they're only gonna finish better than Rutgers and Indiana.
- 57:20SPEAKER_01: Everybody else is gonna finish ahead of them.
- 57:22SPEAKER_01: Ruckers is gonna win like three games all year, correct?
- 57:25SPEAKER_01: And Indiana's gonna win five, six.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: So yeah, that's that's pretty bold.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: It is bold, and what's gonna happen is is the the tenor in East Lansing is going to turn on my guy, Mel Tucker.
- 57:36SPEAKER_02: I love Mel Tucker, and he's he's a great.
- 57:39SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think they should have gone all in on him.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: I think that's too bold, too bold.
- 57:45SPEAKER_02: I think they're gonna be just fine.
- 57:46SPEAKER_02: They're not gonna win, they're not gonna win the division, they're not gonna win the conference, but they're gonna be fine.
- 57:53SPEAKER_01: All right, all right.
- 57:54SPEAKER_01: Uh you want to go next, you want me to go again?
- 57:57SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, because I just have this one.
- 58:00SPEAKER_02: Okay, but one more.
- 58:01SPEAKER_02: All right, and it pains me to say it.
- 58:04SPEAKER_02: Um, but the more that I thought about it, it just makes sense.
- 58:08SPEAKER_02: Bryce Young goes back to back on the Heisman.
- 58:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's not bold at all.
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: That's how's that not bold?
- 58:14SPEAKER_02: It's only happened like once ever.
- 58:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think who who did it was the um it was uh was Horning.
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: No, it was the guy at Michigan, Ohio State, I think like in the 70s.
- 58:22SPEAKER_01: Was it Archie Paul Horning?
- 58:24SPEAKER_02: I thought.
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: Maybe, yeah.
- 58:26SPEAKER_01: But it's super rare.
- 58:27SPEAKER_01: Um if he's if it's only happened like once ever, that's pretty bold.
- 58:30SPEAKER_01: All right, true, true.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: But I think I mean what does Vegas say about that?
- 58:34SPEAKER_01: What's what are what what are the Vegas Heisman odds?
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: He's gotta be the safe guy.
- 58:38SPEAKER_01: He's probably the he's probably the leader, probably the leader.
- 58:41SPEAKER_01: But yes, it is odd to go back to back.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: I'll give that.
- 58:43SPEAKER_01: I don't know if that's bold.
- 58:44SPEAKER_01: I think that's that's underlined, it's italics.
- 58:47SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's bold.
- 58:48SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's a bold take.
- 58:50SPEAKER_02: My bold take, and this one it's only happened once ever, it's pretty bold.
- 58:53SPEAKER_01: All right, yeah, yeah.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 58:54SPEAKER_01: I got one.
- 58:55SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna one up.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna one up you.
- 58:56SPEAKER_01: I've I've my one of my bold one of my uh bold takes was a Heisman winner.
- 59:00SPEAKER_01: Who's going to hire this year?
- 59:02SPEAKER_01: Tyler Van Dyck, my University of Miami, who I think is like eighth or ninth.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: No shit.
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: He's gonna come on like gangbusters.
- 59:09SPEAKER_01: His schedule is that is bold because it's not gonna happen.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: He's gonna win.
- 59:12SPEAKER_01: He is so good.
- 59:13SPEAKER_01: Watch him play football.
- 59:14SPEAKER_01: Look at his completion percentage last year.
- 59:16SPEAKER_01: He is awesome.
- 59:17SPEAKER_01: He is a really good, and I think Mara Cristobal is only gonna make him better.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: And Miami's such a pretty darn good roster this year.
- 59:23SPEAKER_01: He's gonna do well.
- 59:24SPEAKER_01: His roster, his schedule is super manageable too.
- 59:26SPEAKER_01: His two massive challenges are Texas AM at AM week three, Miami at in um at Texas AM, which is gonna be a great television.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be such a fun game to watch.
- 59:37SPEAKER_01: Circle that on the calendar, yeah, exactly.
- 59:39SPEAKER_01: Um, and then at Clemson, week 11.
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: So he's got 10 weeks to get that Heisman campaign rolling, rack up a topic.
- 59:47SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 59:48SPEAKER_01: I love the prediction.
- 59:49SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 59:50SPEAKER_01: Tyler Van.
- 59:50SPEAKER_02: I love that we're talking about Miami.
- 59:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah, give me Florida State, give me Miami, give me USC, give me some of these teams again, and give me Texas again for that matter.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: I would love Texas to actually be back.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: I don't believe it when I see it.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_02: I just I'm they will be recruiting at too high a level.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: They will be.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we didn't even talk about Ken Quinn Quinn Ewers or Archie Man, but that'll be later in the season.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_01: We'll get to those guys.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_01: We've got plenty of time to get to recruits that are still in high school.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_01: Plenty of those.
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_01: Uh one more bull prediction.
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_01: So I'll give you my time over my dyke one.
- 1:00:22SPEAKER_01: Last one, Brian Harson, Auburn coach, embattled Auburn coach, didn't have a great first year uh under the helm this past year, a little tough.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_01: He's not gonna survive the season.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: Brian Harson will get fired this year.
- 1:00:35SPEAKER_01: I'm saying week seven or eight.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_02: See, this is an interesting bold prediction.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_02: And for the non-Auburn fans, you probably don't care, but this is a huge storyline.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_02: So he was brought in from Boise State.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: He walked into a dumpster fire of a situation and actually did pretty well.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: They were they almost beat Bama last year, they've got arguably the toughest schedule last year and this year coming into this next year in the nation.
- 1:01:06SPEAKER_02: For the for him to walk in and win seven games would be commendable.
- 1:01:13SPEAKER_02: And I don't think six or seven wins gets him fired, and I think he's gonna end up right around there.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_01: I I I want I look at his schedule and I don't know that they're going to a bowl this year.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_01: I don't mean I know Auburn, I hate to say because I mean Auburn's always tough, and they all like they've they've surprised me countless times.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_02: I'll give maybe all miss last year.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_01: People forget they they had a very good season, yeah, given the circumstances.
- 1:01:36SPEAKER_01: They are a plucky squad and they'll they get they get a few wins, but I just I think Brian Harson's a bad fit down there.
- 1:01:41SPEAKER_01: I think his personality is a bad fit.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: Well, he's a bad fit because the boosters tried to get him fired.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_01: Yep, exactly.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_01: And um, that's not that's not gonna go away, and that's going to happen.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_01: They're going to cave.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_01: The pressure of losing, especially losing early, is gonna be too much.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_01: Brian Harson doesn't survive the season.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_01: That's that's bold.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna go.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_02: This is one of the this is this is one I'm gonna go on record to go against you on so that we can look back on.
- 1:02:05SPEAKER_02: Yes, because I think he survives.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_02: I think they have a decent year, decent given the circumstances.
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_02: I don't think he gets fired.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_02: How many wins?
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_01: What's his record?
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_02: It was a four like I said, I think I think he I think they they manage six or seven wins.
- 1:02:19SPEAKER_02: I think their schedule is brutal.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_02: Their schedule is one of the toughest in the nation.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_02: So you're and I am I hearing seven and seven and five out of you, and that's good enough to say no, and that's too much.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_02: I think he stays on.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_02: I think they I don't think they tank and win uh okay.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_02: If there's a world, he they only win four games, he gets fired.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_02: Okay, he's he's they're not gonna win four games.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_02: They've got enough there to and and I think there's a after what happened off the field at the end of the last year, I think there's enough of a bunker down mentality.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_02: He survives.
- 1:02:52SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_01: All right, we'll we disagree, which is great news because that's the but that's what makes the show so much fun.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_01: Is we just have uh both have terrible takes and we'll find out whose take was less terrible when then when the time comes.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_01: So good stuff.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_01: Um, that's all of my I've got one more, one more bold prediction.
- 1:03:08SPEAKER_01: Um, that I want to that I want to share.
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_01: Uh, so obviously we talked about earlier the storylines of this season were NILs and name engine likeness deals and players being able to make money off of them themselves and uh receive compensation in ways they never have before as well.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_01: Here is my prediction for 2022.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_01: Mike White and Mike Wade will sign an NIL deal this season.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know who, I don't know how, I don't know how much it's gonna be for.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_01: It could be you, whoever's listening right now, it could be one dollar.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_01: Someone, somebody is gonna make us, we are going to sign NIL deals.
- 1:03:46SPEAKER_01: You and I are gonna get in the game with the investors, possibly, possibly, possibly you.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_01: We are going to sign an NIL deal.
- 1:03:54SPEAKER_01: Uh, we are looking for sponsors, it could be you.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_01: I'm not sure it's gonna be.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_01: That is my last bull prediction for 2022.
- 1:03:59SPEAKER_01: Is you and I get in the NIL game ourselves.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: Um, and we we secure the we secure speaking of which this pressure, I can't take it anymore.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_01: Good thing I've got this murder.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_01: Not a sponsor yet, but could be.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_01: I know.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_01: I was we were also pimping Modello earlier as well.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_01: Uh, not a sponsor, but we do love Modello.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_02: It's just channeling that uh Wayne's World 2 scene where they're kicking back Pepsi's and and pizzas and and uh Nikes.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_01: You get the idea.
- 1:04:28SPEAKER_01: So that is my last bold prediction is that somehow, somehow, you and I are going to get NIL deals.
- 1:04:34SPEAKER_01: We're gonna get in on the NI Del Fever NIL fever, which is uh capital Lee.
- 1:04:38SPEAKER_01: I've got the fever.
- 1:04:39SPEAKER_01: I got the fever for NIL fever.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_01: Um, that's all I got.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_01: Uh we got loads to talk about on next show.
- 1:04:45SPEAKER_01: Um uh do we talk about talk about that at all?
- 1:04:48SPEAKER_01: You want to say we want to save that?
- 1:04:50SPEAKER_02: No, let's save it because we're already so long.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:04:53SPEAKER_01: We are a little bit long the tooth.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_01: That's a little long tooth.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, what you know, one thing I will just a little teaser for next to next next episode, just to kind of get you guys uh all hot and bothered.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_01: I think this is the first time in like 15 years that Tennessee is ranked higher than LSU in all the preseason polls.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_01: It's like a weird humble brack.
- 1:05:13SPEAKER_01: It I'm saying this is is this is the first time that we've seen that.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_01: I don't know what it means for you or I.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, both of us hopefully both of that that hasn't it doesn't feel like it's been that long.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_01: So when is the last when's the last time that Tennessee went into season ahead of LSU?
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_02: When I was in school at Tennessee.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_01: Okay, so it's been a minute.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_01: It's been a minute.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, but I I I know when I was doing my research this year, I couldn't help but notice that.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited for that.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I'm I'm Tennessee ball is gonna be fun to watch.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_01: And LSU is a massive question mark for being out of school.
- 1:05:43SPEAKER_01: Question mark, yeah.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_01: We will you'll hear all about Tennessee and LSU um later.
