- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his Word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in First Timothy
- 0:18chapter 6 verses one through 10. First Timothy chapter 6 verses
- 0:23one through 10. It is crazy to me that we are
- 0:25already at the conclusion of the letter of First Timothy and this
- 0:30is written from the Apostle Paul to his son in the faith,
- 0:33Timothy, who he left in the city of Ephesus in order to put back
- 0:38in order the church as some false teachers had come in.
- 0:41There was bad doctrine and bad behavior as we saw even 2
- 0:46episodes ago, misuse and mismanagement of church funds.
- 0:51And this book just has it all. I told you guys, I think it was
- 0:56the last episode. I was on a time crunch.
- 0:58I'm also on a time crunch on this episode.
- 1:01And so this will be a nice brief one for you.
- 1:03And I'm hoping to get all the way through to verse #10 but
- 1:06let's begin reading together in verse #1 All who are under the
- 1:10yoke as slaves should regard their own masters as worthy of
- 1:15all respect, so that God's name and His teaching will not be
- 1:19blasphemed. Let those who have believing
- 1:22masters not be disrespectful to them because they are brothers,
- 1:26but serve them even better, since those who benefit from
- 1:30their service are believers and dearly loved.
- 1:35Teach and encourage these things.
- 1:37If anyone teaches false doctrine and does not agree with the
- 1:41sound teaching of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the teaching
- 1:44that promotes godliness. He is conceited and understands
- 1:49nothing, but has an unhealthy interest in disputes and
- 1:53arguments over words. From these come envy,
- 1:57quarreling, slander, evil suspicions, and constant
- 2:02disagreement among people whose minds are depraved and deprived
- 2:06of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a way to material
- 2:11gain. But godliness with contentment
- 2:15is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we
- 2:19can take nothing out. If we have food and clothing,
- 2:22we'll be content with these. But those who want to be rich
- 2:27fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful
- 2:32desires which plunge people into ruin and destruction.
- 2:37For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by
- 2:42craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced
- 2:46themselves with many griefs. OK, we've got kind of two
- 2:52aspects of this passage, 1st and verses one through 3.
- 2:57We see the way that Paul encourages Timothy to disciple
- 3:02those that were in 1st century Roman slavery.
- 3:06Now I got a level with you guys. There is such a difference
- 3:12between slavery in the Roman Empire and slavery as we were
- 3:17familiar with it. Even as we learn about American
- 3:21and British and other nations slavery from the 15 hundreds, 15
- 3:27and 16 hundreds onward that even these verses appear to give if
- 3:35you will legitimacy to the evil kidnapping racism and abusive
- 3:45actions of those within the last several centuries before slavery
- 3:51was abolished in Britain, in America, among other places.
- 3:55I want to make it very clear it was a totally different thing.
- 4:00Slavery during these times was something that you were viewed
- 4:04as a part of the household, that someone was responsible for you
- 4:11like they were responsible for their own child.
- 4:13Now there were. As with American slavery, there
- 4:18were gross excesses and harms that were often times done to
- 4:24those that were slaves. They were consistently given.
- 4:30They were consistently physically, emotionally, and
- 4:34verbally and sexually abused by those that were their masters.
- 4:40However, there were some recourses available for them.
- 4:44Ability to both be paid and to buy your freedom.
- 4:50Like to purchase your freedom after, you know, having whatever
- 4:54amount of money that you could purchase your freedom or your
- 4:57citizenship as a Roman citizen. A Roman citizen could not be a
- 5:02slave from that point forward. So there were some differences
- 5:07there, but I, I just want to name it very directly here that
- 5:11there is an uncomfortability as we look at these verses nowadays
- 5:16to the people that Paul was writing this to, they would be
- 5:20thinking about it more in this way.
- 5:21I am free in Christ. I am not a, if you will, I'm not
- 5:25a mere possession of any other person.
- 5:29And so I have worth and dignity before God.
- 5:34And the temptation for some people would be due to the fact
- 5:37that like when I gather with the church, I am not viewed as a
- 5:41second class person. I'm not viewed as property.
- 5:45When I gather with the church man, I am given worth and
- 5:50integrity there. There's nothing in First Timothy
- 5:533 that says that a person could not be a slave and be an elder
- 5:59or be a Deacon. You have these people that they
- 6:03are given full and free access to everything within the local
- 6:08church that they eat together with those that are rich, with
- 6:11those that are poor. And so the temptation would be
- 6:14for these individuals that then as they go back to a special
- 6:19those masters that were not Christians, that they could be
- 6:25really disrespectful to those people, not treating them as
- 6:30image bearers of God. But instead, if you will,
- 6:33lashing out in in bitterness and in anger and in a refusal to, if
- 6:39you will do the job that they are hired to do that their
- 6:44clothing and food and shelter is all paid for.
- 6:48It's all given and provided by their master.
- 6:52And So what Paul says here in verses one and two, everyone
- 6:56that is under the yoke as slaves.
- 6:59I, I noticed even there he doesn't say those of you that
- 7:02are slaves. He says those of you that are
- 7:03under the yoke as slaves. He says a slave isn't your
- 7:07ultimate identity. And I know this and I want you
- 7:11to know it as well, he says. All who are under the yoga slave
- 7:14should regard their own masters as worthy of all respect so that
- 7:19God's name and his teaching will not be blasphemed.
- 7:23He says, I want the way that you interact with your master, with
- 7:27your boss, to use common colloquialisms.
- 7:31I want the way that you interact with your boss to be filled with
- 7:35respect and honor for the sake of God's name and his teachings.
- 7:40That people wouldn't associate Christianity with some of the
- 7:45various other like uprising groups that you would have
- 7:48throughout Roman history, some slave rebellions and different
- 7:51things like that. Paul says, I, I don't want us to
- 7:54get it mixed up. The Jesus crew is a crew that is
- 7:59respectful and kind and loving and forgiving and for bearing.
- 8:02We're patient with other people. We are respectful towards
- 8:05everyone. We don't say, OK, be respectful
- 8:08towards everyone except for your employer, except for your
- 8:12master. He says, I want us to show
- 8:15respect to everyone. These are the same types of
- 8:17things that we learned together in first Peter two and three and
- 8:22that we learned in Ephesians chapters 5 and 6.
- 8:27It is I am choosing to listen to, to, to treat well, to obey,
- 8:33to submit to someone else, not because they have earned it or
- 8:39because I am just subservient to them.
- 8:41No, it's because I'm trying to make the gospel look good and
- 8:45look appealing that someone would see the way that I treat
- 8:48my master or I treat my employer versus how someone else treats
- 8:52them. And they would go, man, there's
- 8:54something different about the Jesus people.
- 8:57And so here, this is what Paul says so that God's name and his
- 9:00teachings will not be blaspheming.
- 9:01They wouldn't be like, oh, man, yeah, I've got a couple of those
- 9:04Christians that are working here at my farm or that, you know,
- 9:09one that's a steward, a manager over my house.
- 9:12And he's just constantly like insulting me.
- 9:15He won't do anything that I have asked.
- 9:19Yeah, these Christians, they are just lazy workers.
- 9:22They, they do not care about us. And here Paul says we can
- 9:26beautify the gospel and have God's name not be blasphemed
- 9:31through how we work and how we treat others with respect.
- 9:36Here he does not say, OK, I want you guys to go enslave people or
- 9:39go and purchase slaves. Here he is saying for those of
- 9:43you that are in this context right now, this is the spot in
- 9:45life where you find yourself. Use it for the glory of God and
- 9:49for the exultation of the gospel.
- 9:51He says, let those who have believing masters not be
- 9:54disrespectful to them because they are brothers.
- 9:57So whether or not a master was a Christian, they were supposed to
- 10:01be respectful towards them. That is not asking more than we
- 10:04say for every single person, Every single person that we
- 10:07interact with, we ought to view with respect and care because
- 10:11they are made in the image of God with his dignity.
- 10:15So he says if you have a believing brother that is a
- 10:19master, then like serve him and what a joy because everything
- 10:23that you're doing is for one of your brothers in the Lord.
- 10:29Much more could be said about that, but that'll suffice for
- 10:31right now. We're going to end today looking
- 10:34just at verses 3 through 10 on money says teach and encourage
- 10:39these things. If anyone teaches false doctrine
- 10:41and doesn't agree with the sound teaching of our Lord Jesus
- 10:44Christ and with the teaching that promotes godliness.
- 10:47He's conceited and understands nothing but has an unhealthy
- 10:51interest in disputes and arguments over words.
- 10:54If you find an argumentative person that is a person that is
- 10:58is not like submitting themselves to the teachings of
- 11:01Jesus and argumentative. A constantly debating person is
- 11:07not someone that you should emulate their lives or actions.
- 11:14Many times, especially in the realm of theology, you can get
- 11:17people that will want to quibble over tiny little words and and
- 11:22perfect phrasings and things that do not ultimately matter.
- 11:26And they are. They can often be unchrist like
- 11:29individuals. They can be hateful, they can be
- 11:31angry, they can be sometimes even, like lust, fuller or
- 11:35covetous, greedy people. And it's easily known by what
- 11:40they talk about and how they talk about it.
- 11:42My, my prayer would be, you know, I'm, I'm in God's word
- 11:45constantly. I don't want to be this person
- 11:48that just quibbles over words. I want to be someone that cares
- 11:51deeply about godliness, about Jesus showing up in and through
- 11:56me. And I want to encourage you to
- 11:57do the same. The most important thing that
- 12:00you can do is like know the gospel and exhibit the fruit of
- 12:04the spirit. And if that's all you have in
- 12:06your life is the gospel and godliness, like Jesus's
- 12:09characteristics coming out of you, you will be all right.
- 12:13You will be doing well as opposed to this there at the
- 12:16universe 4, he says. From these, from the debating
- 12:19people, come envy, quarreling, slander, evil suspicions, and
- 12:24constant disagreement among people whose minds are depraved
- 12:28and deprived of the truth, who imagine that godliness is a way
- 12:32to material gain. Envy is.
- 12:34I wish I had that position that someone else has.
- 12:37I wish I had this possession that someone else has quarreling
- 12:41here, constant argument, arguments.
- 12:44You find an argumentative person, you find someone who is
- 12:46always duking it out with someone else verbally.
- 12:49You're always complaining about someone else.
- 12:52That is an ungodly person. He says slander, evil
- 12:56suspicions. I'm sure they intended this.
- 12:58They meant this. I bet they fill in the blank.
- 13:02That is an ungodly person. And Paul says these kinds of
- 13:05people, their minds are depraved and deprived of the truth.
- 13:10Like they don't recognize what is most important.
- 13:14And he says and they think that godliness is a way to financial
- 13:19gain, to material gain. Being godly is not a way to get
- 13:24rich. Being a, if you will, being a
- 13:28pastor, being an evangelist, being a seminary professor
- 13:32should not be a way that we go, OK, I'm going to get tons of
- 13:35money by telling everyone what they want to hear.
- 13:37You can look, you know, on basically any of the, you know,
- 13:41quote UN quote, like Christian broadcasting networks and you
- 13:43will find people who have utilized quote UN quote
- 13:47godliness or teaching the word of God in order to get immense
- 13:53financial gain. Paul says that's not the way to
- 13:55true gain. He says godliness with
- 13:57contentment is great gain. You don't need godliness and
- 14:00money to really win in life. He says you need godliness and
- 14:04contentment, that I live like Jesus and I'm content with what
- 14:08God has for me. That I'm not always trying to
- 14:11fleece people for more. Instead I say, God, thank you
- 14:15for what you've given me and I'm going to be like you in the way
- 14:19that I live. He says in verse #7 we brought
- 14:22nothing into the world and we can take nothing out.
- 14:24Everything we have is temporary. The house, the boat, the four O
- 14:291K, the Social Security, the, you know, the, the Airbnb,
- 14:35everything that we have, we will one day not have.
- 14:38So don't focus on the possessions, Don't focus on the
- 14:41bank account. Instead focus on your soul.
- 14:45Focus on being like Jesus in what you say and what we do
- 14:49verse #8 if we have food and clothing, we will be content
- 14:52with these. Unfortunately for many of us, we
- 14:54go, yeah, I have the food and clothing, but I also want this
- 14:57laundry list of 90 other things. And what God tells us is if you
- 15:01have the bare necessities, then praise the Lord for it and be
- 15:05content with what you have. Verse #9 The flip side of this,
- 15:09those that are not content but want to pursue a financial gain.
- 15:15He says those who want to be rich.
- 15:17This is a all pressing, all consuming desire to get and get
- 15:22and get. This is not those who want to
- 15:24provide for their family. This is those who are intent on
- 15:29being rich, they fall into temptation, a trap, and many
- 15:33foolish and harmful desires which plunge people into ruin
- 15:38and destruction. You can look at all the people
- 15:41that buy the, you know, get rich quick things and you will see
- 15:44over and over again. They waste their funds.
- 15:47They put their money into, you know, gambling.
- 15:50They, they really want to get rich fast and so they'll gamble
- 15:53and it ruins their life. I want to encourage you guys.
- 15:56This shouldn't be a shock coming from Baptist pastor, but like,
- 15:59make good wise financial decisions.
- 16:02Don't bet on the ponies, those types of things.
- 16:05If you have an all pressing, all consuming desire to be rich, you
- 16:09will make bad choices, whether that's bad financial investments
- 16:13or attempting to, you know, Ponzi scheme, pyramid scheme,
- 16:19get get money from other people robbing people.
- 16:23Proverbs actually, humorously enough, has a bunch to say about
- 16:27extorting or cheating other people in your business.
- 16:32Don't do that. That should never be the case
- 16:34for the child of God. And as we end here in verse #10
- 16:38For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by
- 16:42craving it some have wandered away from the faith and pierced
- 16:46themselves with many griefs. Here the love of money is not
- 16:50the root of all evil. It is all types of evil.
- 16:56And many different people in our world today have fallen into
- 16:59this trap that for love of money they have done things that they
- 17:04shouldn't have done. For the love of money, they have
- 17:06abandoned family or caring for their children or caring for
- 17:10loved ones. For love of money, people have
- 17:13refused to be generous or to care for the poor or the widows
- 17:17or the orphans. For love of money, people have
- 17:20forsaken the worship of God in order to work more and more and
- 17:25more and get more and more money.
- 17:27Want to encourage you? Greed is never the answer.
- 17:30Godliness is the answer. That we would not pursue
- 17:33financial gain, but we would, if you will, pursue the spiritual
- 17:37gain that blesses us and all of those around us, both for now
- 17:42and for eternity. Your family will be all right if
- 17:46they're, you know, father or mother, is spiritual, is godly,
- 17:52is caring and loving, and exhibits Jesus's
- 17:54characteristics. And you guys have a smaller
- 17:57house than if you spent all of your time pursuing financial
- 18:01gain. Pursue, if you will, using the
- 18:03words of Jesus from the Sermon on the Mount.
- 18:05Seek first the Kingdom of God and his righteousness and all of
- 18:09the things of life will be added to you.
- 18:11What you need. Godliness with content is great
- 18:15game. Thanks for tuning in.
- 18:17Look forward to seeing you next episode.
