- 0:01Speaker 1: Welcome to Not So Fast with Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst,
- 0:05Speaker 1: where two longtime friends challenge each other on the biggest
- 0:08Speaker 1: sports stories.
- 0:09Speaker 2: Of the day. Here's Andrew Perloff and Paul Pabst. Not
- 0:13Speaker 2: so fast, my friends.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Welcome to Not So Fast. I'm Andrew Perloff. He is
- 0:23Speaker 3: Paul Paps. Huge football weekend ahead, but first, Paul, last night.
- 0:27Speaker 4: Last night wasn't even a football game on Thursday Night Football,
- 0:30Speaker 4: Bill's lines.
- 0:31Speaker 5: It felt like an event.
- 0:32Speaker 3: It was incredible. You had the bare-naked ladies singing O
- 0:34Speaker 3: Canada once more.
- 0:35Speaker 2: That's what it was?
- 0:36Speaker 3: Yes. Yeah, throwback to the 90s. There's nothing more Bills
- 0:39Speaker 3: than that. You had Bruce Smith in the house. You
- 0:41Speaker 3: had the new Highmark Stadium. Ryan Fitzpatrick doing all sorts
- 0:45Speaker 3: of crazy things. I am so glad the Bills delivered
- 0:48Speaker 3: on the field. I don't want to root one way
- 0:50Speaker 3: or another, but if they'd come out totally flat after
- 0:52Speaker 3: that opening, that would be a disaster.
- 0:54Speaker 4: Yeah, they really couldn't have played better in the first half.
- 0:56Speaker 5: It felt like... Touchdown, Josh Allen. Touchdown, Josh Allen.
- 0:59Speaker 3: Pass.
- 0:59Speaker 4: He dumped one to Knox just to give him a
- 1:01Speaker 4: little bit of it, but it felt exactly what you
- 1:03Speaker 4: wanted that night. The fireworks beforehand, tables getting broken, Josh
- 1:08Speaker 4: Allen hitting everybody, keeping everybody happy.
- 1:10Speaker 5: Look at this one. Is there a defender in the building?
- 1:12Speaker 3: I was actually yelling at the Lions defensive coordinator Josh
- 1:16Speaker 3: Allen is about to scramble right. He was going to
- 1:18Speaker 3: do it every time. So Aiden Hutchinson would storm down
- 1:20Speaker 3: the middle. Allen would run right around him. They would
- 1:23Speaker 3: blitz like crazy and Allen would get around it. They
- 1:25Speaker 3: had no game plan at all for him.
- 1:27Speaker 4: It felt like Aiden Hutchinson was on an island and
- 1:30Speaker 4: it was just chasing around. And Josh Allen was just
- 1:32Speaker 4: doing it with his legs, giving to his running back.
- 1:34Speaker 2: It was beautiful.
- 1:34Speaker 3: Yeah, against the blitz, he was 12 for 17, 137 yards,
- 1:36Speaker 3: two TDs. Right now, Paul, in my mind, he's unstoppable.
- 1:43Speaker 3: In fact, to the point where I am thinking about
- 1:45Speaker 3: changing my Super Bowl pick in the AFC to the Bills,
- 1:48Speaker 3: he's that good where he can carry a team. Football
- 1:51Speaker 3: is an ultimate team sport. To me, this is a
- 1:54Speaker 3: one-man team, and usually that does not work. It's working
- 1:57Speaker 3: with him.
- 1:57Speaker 4: He does feel undefendable, and they have a running game
- 2:00Speaker 4: with James Cook. I know the running game is because
- 2:02Speaker 4: of Josh Allen. You've got to contain him. but it
- 2:04Speaker 4: feels like the only negative from last night is the
- 2:07Speaker 4: DJ Moore injury, and it doesn't look like it's that bad,
- 2:09Speaker 4: but it felt like one of those perfect nights where
- 2:12Speaker 4: you reminded the entire world that Josh Allen is the
- 2:15Speaker 4: best player in football?
- 2:17Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely the best player in football. I mean, the
- 2:19Speaker 3: one competition is, I guess, Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes,
- 2:22Speaker 3: but right now, Josh Allen is playing better than anybody.
- 2:25Speaker 4: We'll talk a little more about that later, and on
- 2:27Speaker 4: the Lions side of it, it felt like, you know,
- 2:29Speaker 4: there they are going down the field. It felt like
- 2:31Speaker 4: The backup defensive backs were doing nothing. James Cook running
- 2:34Speaker 4: wild here. It did feel like they were two separate teams.
- 2:38Speaker 4: The Bills feel like a Super Bowl favorite. The Lions
- 2:40Speaker 4: feel like a team that can.
- 2:41Speaker 5: Make the playoffs.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, they have some work to do to
- 2:44Speaker 3: make the playoffs. They were not good in the second
- 2:46Speaker 3: half against the Saints. They have injuries everywhere, Paul.
- 2:49Speaker 4: The Lions cut that to a 10-point game with eight
- 2:51Speaker 4: and a half minutes left, and they didn't get a stop.
- 2:54Speaker 5: I wouldn't say they were in it, but they were
- 2:56Speaker 5: in it-ish.
- 2:57Speaker 3: I don't know. I am not sold on that team
- 3:00Speaker 3: at all. Obviously, everyone knows about their safeties are out
- 3:02Speaker 3: with injuries. Then the O-line got all banged up. I
- 3:05Speaker 3: felt like the Bills sort of let them hang around.
- 3:07Speaker 3: They were up 27-7. They got that field goal at
- 3:10Speaker 3: the end of the half. If the Bills wanted to
- 3:12Speaker 3: go 59 like your Chicago Bears, I think they could have.
- 3:15Speaker 5: Do you have any issues with the Bills going forward?
- 3:18Speaker 3: None whatsoever. In fact, I am so excited about it.
- 3:21Speaker 3: I have some comparisons for Josh Allen in my mind. Okay,
- 3:24Speaker 3: he was so dominant in that first half, I got
- 3:26Speaker 3: to thinking, is anyone ever gonna be able to stop him?
- 3:29Speaker 3: Even in the playoffs where the Bills have struggled, How
- 3:32Speaker 3: about SGA two years ago with Oklahoma City? Could not
- 3:34Speaker 3: be stopped. Oh, you're going NBA? I'm going NBA. How
- 3:36Speaker 3: about Kawhi in 2019 with the Raptors? Barry Bonds in
- 3:39Speaker 3: baseball in 2003 or 2004. Aaron Donald in the Super
- 3:44Speaker 3: Bowl when he said, the Rams are not going to
- 3:46Speaker 3: lose this game. I'm going to single-handedly take down the Bengals.
- 3:49Speaker 3: And he just went ahead and did that. I think
- 3:51Speaker 3: Josh Allen is playing so good right now. Superman is
- 3:54Speaker 3: the analogy for me. I see no... No player who's
- 3:57Speaker 3: doing what he's doing, and not only that, he makes
- 3:59Speaker 3: everything around him easier. James Cook has all these wide
- 4:02Speaker 3: holes because all the defense is watching Josh Allen.
- 4:05Speaker 4: Okay, I'm going to not so fast you real quick
- 4:06Speaker 4: because Josh Allen has been doing this for the past
- 4:08Speaker 4: six years, and they haven't gotten that close. I will
- 4:11Speaker 4: say I love their running game now compared to five
- 4:13Speaker 4: years ago. We always say this in September. He's the
- 4:16Speaker 4: September VP every year. What would be the thing that
- 4:19Speaker 4: keeps him from the Super Bowl? If he can't, is
- 4:21Speaker 4: it just... Being a bill, like being the bills keeps
- 4:24Speaker 4: them from the Super Bowl. And I'm not trying to
- 4:25Speaker 4: say they're jinxed. I don't like that kind of talk.
- 4:27Speaker 4: But it does feel like they're a team that why
- 4:30Speaker 4: wouldn't you pick them to the Super Bowl?
- 4:31Speaker 5: They have everything.
- 4:32Speaker 3: I don't think this is the same Josh Allen. I
- 4:34Speaker 3: know what you're saying. He obviously won the MVP. He's
- 4:37Speaker 3: been a great player, but what he did at Houston,
- 4:39Speaker 3: specifically in Week 1, the best defense in the entire NFL.
- 4:43Speaker 3: He carved them up. He just wrapped them around his finger,
- 4:45Speaker 3: could do whatever he wanted. He can run without risk
- 4:48Speaker 3: of injury, which Lamar Jackson cannot do. He'll try any
- 4:52Speaker 3: throw out there, Paul, and he usually hits it.
- 4:54Speaker 4: Okay, we're going to talk about helmet stickers in a second.
- 4:57Speaker 4: We're going to talk about Highmark, but I've been saving
- 4:58Speaker 4: this one for a while. Would you say, without a doubt,
- 5:01Speaker 4: Josh Allen is the best football player in the NFL?
- 5:04Speaker 3: Right now, yes.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:05Speaker 4: If you needed a win in a fourth quarter of
- 5:08Speaker 4: a playoff game where you were down, would you take
- 5:10Speaker 4: Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes?
- 5:12Speaker 3: Current Patrick Mahomes.
- 5:13Speaker 5: Right. Even in his state of his health?
- 5:16Speaker 3: Right now, Josh Allen.
- 5:17Speaker 2: Really?
- 5:18Speaker 5: I don't believe you believe that.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Did you watch Patrick Mahomes last week?
- 5:22Speaker 5: I did, and I think he's going to inch his
- 5:23Speaker 5: way back.
- 5:24Speaker 4: But I also think we forget sometimes because Josh Allen,
- 5:27Speaker 4: he feels like the kid in high school that was bigger, stronger,
- 5:30Speaker 4: and faster than everybody, and he's dating the prom queen.
- 5:32Speaker 5: He seems unstoppable.
- 5:34Speaker 4: When you watch his games, he's not afraid of contact,
- 5:36Speaker 4: and he never gets hurt. He really is the Superman
- 5:38Speaker 4: of the sport. Mahomes doesn't have that physical running physicality
- 5:42Speaker 4: that Josh Allen has. But I really think that people
- 5:45Speaker 4: take Mahomes for granted. And if you're being honest with yourself,
- 5:48Speaker 4: if we had the NSF lie detector, you get Orlovsky
- 5:51Speaker 4: in here, you get all these people in here that
- 5:53Speaker 4: say Josh Allen's the greatest thing since sliced bread. You
- 5:56Speaker 4: would take Mahomes in the fourth quarter of a playoff
- 5:58Speaker 4: game down seven.
- 5:59Speaker 3: Okay. Tom Brady got hurt right at the prime of
- 6:02Speaker 3: his career. Remember, he got hit below the knee. He
- 6:05Speaker 3: came back. It took him a year to get back
- 6:07Speaker 3: to where he should be. So I do not think
- 6:09Speaker 3: you have prime Patrick Mahomes this season. So that's why
- 6:12Speaker 3: I'm going Josh Allen. Okay.
- 6:13Speaker 4: I still don't believe that you believe him, but I
- 6:14Speaker 4: love where you're going.
- 6:15Speaker 3: By the way, that guy, you know, the guy in
- 6:17Speaker 3: high school, the football star. I let him copy my
- 6:21Speaker 3: homework all the time. I know that guy really well.
- 6:23Speaker 3: And Josh Allen, one thing about him, too, there's a
- 6:25Speaker 3: destiny feel. I know that's not an analytic or anything,
- 6:28Speaker 3: and I'm all about the analytics, but it does feel
- 6:30Speaker 3: he is way too good to not win a Super
- 6:33Speaker 3: Bowl at some point.
- 6:34Speaker 4: Well, let's stay with that for a second, because the
- 6:36Speaker 4: pressure on this guy now, he has the coach he wanted,
- 6:38Speaker 4: Joe Brady, former OC. He has a new building. That's
- 6:41Speaker 4: the house that Josh Allen built. They said that 20
- 6:44Speaker 4: times on the broadcast. And he is at 30 years old.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Going to be 31. The math works out that way.
- 6:50Speaker 4: It does feel like the pressure is so out of
- 6:53Speaker 4: hand to not be the Dan Marino of his generation
- 6:55Speaker 4: that something is destined to go wrong, not destined to
- 6:58Speaker 4: go right.
- 6:59Speaker 3: I know exactly what you're saying. And there's a funny
- 7:01Speaker 3: tweet out there. The Bills look so good. Maybe they'll
- 7:04Speaker 3: lose in the championship game and not the divisional round
- 7:06Speaker 3: this year. But that being said, the AFC is a
- 7:08Speaker 3: little weird this year. I think the Chiefs are going
- 7:10Speaker 3: to take some time with Patrick Mahomes coming off the injury.
- 7:13Speaker 3: I don't think the Ravens look good right now, but
- 7:15Speaker 3: there's a lot to be determined there. I want my mulligan, Paul.
- 7:19Speaker 3: I want Josh Allen. I just feel it's like a movie.
- 7:22Speaker 3: It's like a movie in real time.
- 7:23Speaker 4: It's not the weekend yet. If you want to change
- 7:25Speaker 4: your Super Bowl pick, you have half an hour to
- 7:27Speaker 4: think about it. I will say, though, America wants the
- 7:29Speaker 4: Bills to win. They love their fans. They love the tailgate.
- 7:32Speaker 4: I love the outdoor stadium. Highmark looked great last night.
- 7:35Speaker 4: And then we mentioned last night on the broadcast you
- 7:37Speaker 4: saw four straight Super Bowls, Jim Kelly and his crew,
- 7:40Speaker 4: the most talented.
- 7:41Speaker 5: Losers of all time. Losers in the Super Bowl, not
- 7:43Speaker 5: losers in life.
- 7:44Speaker 4: It does feel like America would absolutely embrace the Lions
- 7:47Speaker 4: as well because they're like the Cubs. But I think
- 7:49Speaker 4: America would embrace, has embraced the Bucs.
- 7:52Speaker 3: Yeah, Josh Allen, of course, celebrity girlfriend. We need to
- 7:53Speaker 3: give out game stickers.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Okay.
- 7:55Speaker 3: And there's so many to give out, obviously, on the
- 7:56Speaker 3: Buffalo side. Paul, you want to get us started?
- 7:58Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm going to go with Bill's running back, James Cook.
- 8:01Speaker 4: I mean, he had 1,600 yards last year. He had
- 8:03Speaker 4: two other 1,000-yard seasons before that. This guy is the
- 8:06Speaker 4: most unknown star in the NFL. Now, I know James Cook,
- 8:10Speaker 4: he gets a lot of his yards because they're focused
- 8:12Speaker 4: on Jael Shallon. but 1,600 last year. And last night,
- 8:15Speaker 4: 21 for 135. I do wonder, James Cook, and look
- 8:18Speaker 4: at that helmet sticker.
- 8:19Speaker 3: Is that a flattering picture? It looks like he's falling
- 8:21Speaker 3: down for the sticker.
- 8:22Speaker 5: But we are lifting him up with that helmet sticker.
- 8:24Speaker 3: Okay, fair enough.
- 8:24Speaker 4: I wonder if James Cook ever gets salty when they
- 8:26Speaker 4: get to the goal line and Josh Allen just pounds
- 8:28Speaker 4: it in.
- 8:29Speaker 3: I know.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Can I get a couple of those touchdowns?
- 8:30Speaker 3: I'm a James Cook fantasy owner. I get salty. You are?
- 8:32Speaker 3: I was screaming at the TV last night.
- 8:34Speaker 5: Who's your helmet sticker for?
- 8:35Speaker 2: Okay.
- 8:36Speaker 3: I'm going to stay on the Bills offense. Dalton Kincaid,
- 8:38Speaker 3: seven catches, 95 yards, a touchdown. And he had the
- 8:41Speaker 3: big catch in week one over Stingley, the best cornerback
- 8:45Speaker 3: in the NFL, arguably. He is playing at an elite level,
- 8:48Speaker 3: former first-round pick out of Utah. There are a lot
- 8:50Speaker 3: of good players on Buffalo. I think that he is
- 8:52Speaker 3: the transcendent target. People are looking to DJ Moore to
- 8:55Speaker 3: be the guy who takes Josh Allen to the next level.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I think it's tight end Dalton Kincaid. And this is
- 8:59Speaker 3: now a tight end league, Paul. Everyone's talking about 12
- 9:02Speaker 3: personnel and 13 personnel getting more tight ends on the field.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Dalton Kincaid stands out to me as maybe the one
- 9:09Speaker 3: go-to weapon. Again, talking about a difference maker in the playoffs,
- 9:12Speaker 3: I think it's Kincaid.
- 9:13Speaker 4: On the touchdown pass he had to Knox in the
- 9:15Speaker 4: end zone, his other tight end, Josh Allen's running right.
- 9:18Speaker 4: And like you said, they have to focus on him.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Knox just turns around and goes like this. And Josh goes, oh,
- 9:22Speaker 4: I'll let him have it. Like he was sharing at
- 9:24Speaker 4: the playground.
- 9:24Speaker 3: And he had another two open targets behind him because,
- 9:27Speaker 3: and we'll get into Detroit a little more. their defensive
- 9:30Speaker 3: coordinator had no game plan. No. I don't know if
- 9:33Speaker 3: they have a defensive coordinator. They have someone in there.
- 9:36Speaker 3: I just don't know his name. Yeah, Kelvin Shepard really
- 9:38Speaker 3: struggled last night. It might be the personnel. They have
- 9:40Speaker 3: a lot of injuries. I love your Aiden Hutchinson. He
- 9:43Speaker 3: was sucking wind by the end because he's basically the
- 9:46Speaker 3: only guy.
- 9:47Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a great night in Buffalo. Felt like
- 9:48Speaker 4: a homecoming game. The field was a star. There was
- 9:51Speaker 4: tables everywhere.
- 9:51Speaker 3: It was a good night.
- 9:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:52Speaker 3: All right, coming up next, which team needs to win
- 9:55Speaker 3: the most in Week two? I'm going to give you
- 9:57Speaker 3: my take next. Not so fast.
- 10:00Speaker 4: OK, Pearl, time for the midday pick me up. And
- 10:02Speaker 4: you're an Ivy Leaguer. Here's an Ivy Leaguer for you.
- 10:04Speaker 4: A Harvard guy.
- 10:05Speaker 5: There he is. Ryan Fitzpatrick.
- 10:07Speaker 3: Bingo.
- 10:08Speaker 4: You got to like the form. I mean, that's a
- 10:10Speaker 4: guy who's been there.
- 10:12Speaker 3: Oh, Ryan looked right at home last night in Buffalo,
- 10:14Speaker 3: like a fan almost.
- 10:15Speaker 4: How do you think that plays in the Harvard community?
- 10:18Speaker 4: Because this is not what they're known for.
- 10:20Speaker 3: I got to be honest, I don't know how Ryan
- 10:21Speaker 3: Fitzpatrick got into Harvard. I've talked to him a few times.
- 10:24Speaker 3: We've seen him around. He was at Lake Tahoe with
- 10:25Speaker 3: DP Show. He doesn't seem like a Harvard guy.
- 10:27Speaker 4: And they don't give scholarships for football. I think you
- 10:29Speaker 4: also have to have grades. I'll defer to you. You
- 10:32Speaker 4: played JV at Dartmouth. Did you get in because of
- 10:34Speaker 4: your abilities or because of your grades?
- 10:36Speaker 3: That was my jump shot for sure. No, Ryan Fitzpatrick,
- 10:40Speaker 3: I understand he had a huge Wunderlich score, and he
- 10:42Speaker 3: is smart, but he's one of those smart guys who
- 10:44Speaker 3: sounds dumb sometimes.
- 10:45Speaker 4: Yeah, the beard, I love it. But, you know, no
- 10:47Speaker 4: elbow patches for him.
- 10:48Speaker 5: All right, let's get to it.
- 10:48Speaker 4: We love warm takes here on Not So Fast with
- 10:50Speaker 4: Paps and Perloff. I'm going to go first on a nice, warm,
- 10:53Speaker 4: cozy one, getting into the college football weekend. This LSU
- 10:56Speaker 4: Ole Miss game is nine months in the making. This
- 10:59Speaker 4: is when Lane Kiffin leaves town. I mean, he ran
- 11:01Speaker 4: out of town like he had the authorities after him.
- 11:04Speaker 4: Some wanted to. And this has been building and building
- 11:07Speaker 4: and building. It's almost anticlimactic at this point. And now
- 11:09Speaker 4: the thing is, who are you rooting for if you
- 11:11Speaker 4: don't have a dog in the fight, LSU at Ole Miss?
- 11:14Speaker 4: I would say if you did a poll, it's probably
- 11:15Speaker 4: most people are rooting for Ole Miss for payback. You
- 11:18Speaker 4: spurned us. We still have good players. Let's take you down,
- 11:21Speaker 4: bring you down a notch. I can make the case, though,
- 11:24Speaker 4: you'd also root for Lane Kiffin because you want to
- 11:26Speaker 4: see LSU relevant this year. You want to see LSU
- 11:28Speaker 4: in the playoffs. Kiffin is a button pusher. Even if
- 11:31Speaker 4: you don't like him, you've got to like the content
- 11:33Speaker 4: he provides.
- 11:33Speaker 3: I know we do.
- 11:35Speaker 5: I would say this. If you don't know who to
- 11:36Speaker 5: root for.
- 11:37Speaker 4: I'm rooting for a second act in this trilogy. I
- 11:39Speaker 4: want three, if you could, but you can only get two.
- 11:42Speaker 4: I would like to see the loser of Ole Miss-LSU
- 11:45Speaker 4: make the playoffs. And if I'm concocting the playoffs and
- 11:48Speaker 4: they build it later, I make sure Ole Miss versus
- 11:51Speaker 4: LSU has a second act.
- 11:52Speaker 5: I don't know if it's possible. There's a lot of
- 11:54Speaker 5: ways to go.
- 11:54Speaker 4: But if the loser can get it back together, this
- 11:57Speaker 4: is not a bad loss on your resume if you
- 11:59Speaker 4: lose this game. If you can get it back together,
- 12:01Speaker 4: maybe LSU-Ole.
- 12:02Speaker 5: Miss part do.
- 12:04Speaker 3: I have some bad news.
- 12:05Speaker 5: I don't like bad news.
- 12:06Speaker 3: That's not happening, Paul. I'll tell you why. LSU's got
- 12:09Speaker 3: Texas A & M, who's stacked, Alabama, Texas, at Tennessee,
- 12:13Speaker 3: and Mississippi State, who looks dangerous as well. How is
- 12:16Speaker 3: LSU— I know that Lane Kiffin looked great against Clemson. That's
- 12:20Speaker 3: a bad Clemson team. I think there's trouble ahead for LSU.
- 12:22Speaker 4: But also remember, whoever's putting together the playoff committee, whoever's
- 12:25Speaker 4: putting together the playoffs— They are going to build a show,
- 12:28Speaker 4: and they are going to try to work. They worked
- 12:30Speaker 4: in Notre Dame every year. They're going to try to
- 12:31Speaker 4: work in LSU.
- 12:33Speaker 3: They have to end with two losses there, and I'm
- 12:36Speaker 3: not sure Ole Miss is a great team. So we'll see.
- 12:38Speaker 3: I mean, right now it feels like a top-ten matchup.
- 12:41Speaker 3: I don't think it's going to be that at the
- 12:42Speaker 3: end of the season.
- 12:43Speaker 5: You're papooing my sequel.
- 12:44Speaker 3: I know. Listen, you're right that that would be great TV,
- 12:48Speaker 3: but I would hope that they're actually looking at results
- 12:50Speaker 3: on the field.
- 12:51Speaker 2: Okay.
- 12:52Speaker 3: I'm going to go to the NFL. The Chargers host
- 12:55Speaker 3: the Raiders and the Rams host the Giants on Monday night.
- 12:57Speaker 3: We have back-to-back games at SoFi. I got to tell you, Paul.
- 13:01Speaker 3: this better be a good weekend of pro football in L.A.
- 13:04Speaker 3: or that town is going to forget they have the NFL.
- 13:06Speaker 3: Because the Chargers and the Rams were such duds in
- 13:10Speaker 3: Week 1. Now, I know the Rams were in Australia
- 13:12Speaker 3: and they flew in too late, but the Chargers had
- 13:14Speaker 3: the most disappointing loss of the whole Week 1 against
- 13:17Speaker 3: the Cardinals. Now, listen, the Raiders look pretty good. If
- 13:21Speaker 3: the Chargers fall to the Raiders... The very few fans
- 13:24Speaker 3: that they do have are gone. Right. And the Rams,
- 13:27Speaker 3: all the national expectations, they better deliver in a primetime audience. Listen,
- 13:32Speaker 3: the Dodgers just clinched ball. USC is in a great
- 13:35Speaker 3: position to go 4-0. They play Rutgers. So they're going
- 13:38Speaker 3: to go back to USC being the only football team
- 13:40Speaker 3: in town. And the Dodgers are going to take all
- 13:43Speaker 3: the oxygen out of the air in L.A. So it
- 13:44Speaker 3: is now or never for the Chargers and Rams.
- 13:47Speaker 4: You're 100% right because L.A. fans are fickle. I mean,
- 13:50Speaker 4: there was so much buzz when they got Harbaugh there.
- 13:52Speaker 5: It's still there.
- 13:53Speaker 4: Mike McDaniel, the offensive coordinator, it's still there. Justin Herbert,
- 13:57Speaker 4: it's still there. But the Rams, the Rams were like
- 14:00Speaker 4: destiny team where the playoffs are not even a question.
- 14:02Speaker 4: It's like, who are they going to play in the
- 14:04Speaker 4: Super Bowl? Not if they make it.
- 14:05Speaker 3: Well, listen, they should be OK against the Giants. But
- 14:08Speaker 3: can you imagine if Cam Scadaboo came to L.A. and
- 14:10Speaker 3: ran all over them? Rams fans are just going to
- 14:12Speaker 3: go 0-2 and be so upset.
- 14:14Speaker 4: And I think they got blindsided by the Miles Garrett
- 14:16Speaker 4: knee surgery. I don't think there was any talk in
- 14:19Speaker 4: the preseason that he was hurt, hobbled. got injured in
- 14:22Speaker 4: some type of activity. And I know it's some type
- 14:24Speaker 4: of career cleanup on the knee, but look at the Rams' schedule.
- 14:28Speaker 4: It gets a lot tougher.
- 14:29Speaker 3: I mean, a lot tougher.
- 14:30Speaker 5: Even that Arizona game is not a gimme anymore.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, 0-5 is a possibility. I think they
- 14:36Speaker 3: turn it around pretty quickly. The Giants look great against Dallas.
- 14:39Speaker 3: The Rams are another level. You know, the whole thing
- 14:41Speaker 3: about the flight was they wanted to be ready for
- 14:43Speaker 3: week two and not stay in Australia too long. They
- 14:46Speaker 3: better show up. Stafford looked old. I'm just going to
- 14:49Speaker 3: say that week one looked like his back was cranky.
- 14:51Speaker 3: You know how it is.
- 14:52Speaker 5: Yeah, I know how it is. Yeah, I'm the old
- 14:54Speaker 5: guy in the room.
- 14:54Speaker 4: All right, here we go. My next warm take. Let's
- 14:56Speaker 4: go to the Detroit Lions. Now, you would think I
- 14:59Speaker 4: wouldn't root for the Lions, but I think you root
- 15:01Speaker 4: for stories and sports. And I get worried sometimes for
- 15:03Speaker 4: other fan bases. Like, I don't care really about the Lions,
- 15:06Speaker 4: but their fan base deserves a one. One title in
- 15:10Speaker 4: their lifetime. I grew up a Cubs fan.
- 15:12Speaker 5: I got my one.
- 15:13Speaker 4: So here's my thing. If you're a Lions fan and
- 15:15Speaker 4: I offer this contract to you, I don't have the
- 15:17Speaker 4: authority to do so from the big man upstairs. But
- 15:19Speaker 4: I can guarantee you the Lions win a Super Bowl
- 15:22Speaker 4: this year or next year. But let's say it's this year.
- 15:24Speaker 4: But you have to sign a piece of paper. And
- 15:25Speaker 4: when you sign that piece of paper, you get your
- 15:27Speaker 4: guaranteed Super Bowl this year with your Lions, but you
- 15:30Speaker 4: never win again in your lifetime.
- 15:32Speaker 5: You just middle about. And it's happened before.
- 15:34Speaker 4: Again, if you were a fan of a Chicago team
- 15:37Speaker 4: and you love the 85 Bears, they haven't been back.
- 15:39Speaker 4: I mean, 06, they were kind of back. But if
- 15:42Speaker 4: you were a Lions fan, and let's say you're 50
- 15:44Speaker 4: years old or older, when you sign a contract that says,
- 15:47Speaker 4: I would do this. I don't think Bills fans would
- 15:49Speaker 4: because I think they believe Josh Allen could get it done.
- 15:52Speaker 4: But I think if you said to a Lions fan,
- 15:53Speaker 4: here's a contract, one title, one time, that's it, it's over,
- 15:57Speaker 4: they would sign.
- 15:58Speaker 3: I'm going to speak as an Eagles fan. The first
- 16:00Speaker 3: Super Bowl is so sweet. The rest is gravy. So
- 16:03Speaker 3: when the Eagles beat the Patriots in Minnesota, you and
- 16:06Speaker 3: I were standing there together. I cried, as you recall. Yes.
- 16:09Speaker 3: That's all I needed. I was with you. That's all
- 16:11Speaker 3: I needed. I was fine. One Super Bowl is all
- 16:13Speaker 3: you need. I think any Lions fan should take this deal. Right.
- 16:15Speaker 4: It's like Neil Armstrong. He didn't get back to the
- 16:17Speaker 4: moon and say, hey, man, I want to get back
- 16:18Speaker 4: up there. He said, I'm fine. You just need one.
- 16:21Speaker 4: Cubs fans know this. I think Cleveland Guardians, old Indians
- 16:24Speaker 4: fans would know this. Detroit Lions fans sure know this.
- 16:27Speaker 4: And I think Buffalo... all the pain that they've had,
- 16:30Speaker 4: they may sign this contract.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I mean, Detroit, you're going back to 57. 57. They
- 16:34Speaker 3: would do anything to win, and it'd be so sweet.
- 16:36Speaker 3: In fact, the whole country would love it. I think
- 16:39Speaker 3: a one-time Super Bowl championship is fine. That's all you need.
- 16:41Speaker 3: There's no Chiefs. There's no Steelers from the 70s coming anymore. Yeah,
- 16:46Speaker 3: I don't need a dynasty. I need the one. Yeah,
- 16:48Speaker 3: let's put up a poll. Okay. All right, my next
- 16:50Speaker 3: warm take back to the NFL. Dallas Cowboys. There are
- 16:54Speaker 3: a lot of must-win teams, but if the Cowboys go
- 16:56Speaker 3: 0-2 after this offseason, it is going to be the
- 16:59Speaker 3: disaster of all disasters. They host their rival, the Washington Commanders.
- 17:04Speaker 3: If they lose, I think Jerry Jones goes bananas. I
- 17:07Speaker 3: think that he tries to make a big trade, tries
- 17:10Speaker 3: to get Max Crosby to Dallas or something, gives up resources.
- 17:14Speaker 3: I think George Pickens starts to get a little antsy.
- 17:17Speaker 3: You know, he has a contract situation. I think everything
- 17:20Speaker 3: starts to go wrong. Dak, people are going to wonder,
- 17:23Speaker 3: is Dak overrated? And then Brian Schottenheimer. Or people are
- 17:27Speaker 3: going to think maybe Schottenheimer's not the right coach. You know,
- 17:30Speaker 3: he only won seven games last year, Paul, and he
- 17:32Speaker 3: was sort of a hot coaching guy. Everyone liked Schottenheimer.
- 17:35Speaker 3: If he goes 0-2 in Dallas, I think his seat
- 17:37Speaker 3: already gets to be warm. This is a massive, massive game.
- 17:41Speaker 3: I think everyone's taking Washington way too lightly. No one's
- 17:44Speaker 3: talking about the commanders, but they still have Jaden Daniels
- 17:47Speaker 3: and Healthy. If Dallas does not show up and their
- 17:50Speaker 3: defense cannot stop the run against Washington, it's a total disaster. Yeah,
- 17:55Speaker 3: I agree.
- 17:55Speaker 4: I think this is more of a pick-em game than
- 17:56Speaker 4: a real, like, not a favorite in this game. And
- 17:59Speaker 4: I think the level of freak-outs with Dallas would be
- 18:01Speaker 4: the media would freak out, of course. Jerry Jones, because
- 18:04Speaker 4: he goes on a radio station every week. He's not
- 18:06Speaker 4: like other owners that just don't talk. And then I
- 18:08Speaker 4: think the blame would go to the defensive coordinator and say, like,
- 18:12Speaker 4: you've got all these new toys. You've got all these
- 18:14Speaker 4: new things to play with. Schottenheimer would have to eat it.
- 18:16Speaker 4: But he's got this season. And I think it's going
- 18:19Speaker 4: to be, you have to be a little bit patient
- 18:20Speaker 4: with Dallas and let the new guys, Caleb Downs, Rashawn.
- 18:22Speaker 5: Gary, play out.
- 18:23Speaker 4: But people will not be patient. I'm saying you should be.
- 18:26Speaker 2: They won't.
- 18:27Speaker 3: That is the one given all sports. People will not
- 18:30Speaker 3: be patient. You know, new defensive coordinator Christian Parker from
- 18:33Speaker 3: Vic Fangio in Philly. Yep. I think he's only 30,
- 18:36Speaker 3: so you're right. They should give him time, but that's
- 18:38Speaker 3: not how this works.
- 18:39Speaker 4: All right, a couple more games to chop up this
- 18:41Speaker 4: weekend that we think are extra saucy here in Not
- 18:43Speaker 4: So Fast. Vikings at Bears. Everyone is gushing over the Bears' offense.
- 18:46Speaker 4: They're going to score 100 points a game. Carson Wentz,
- 18:49Speaker 4: he should... That was a one-timer. He's not going to
- 18:51Speaker 4: do anything against the Bears offense. This is a not-so-fast,
- 18:54Speaker 4: scary game for the Bears.
- 18:56Speaker 3: Oh, my God. This is such a great matchup on
- 18:58Speaker 3: the coaching standpoint. The Vikings have Brian Flores, who blitzed
- 19:01Speaker 3: Jordan Love into the bleachers, basically, last week in Green Bay.
- 19:05Speaker 3: They're going to come after Caleb Williams. I pulled up
- 19:07Speaker 3: the numbers, Paul. Caleb Williams has an 88.1 passer rating
- 19:11Speaker 3: against Brian Flores in four games. He's 1-1. It's a
- 19:14Speaker 3: hard assignment. Forget 59 points against Carolina. I think Caleb
- 19:18Speaker 3: Williams just wants to play okay against a defense that
- 19:21Speaker 3: was very good last week.
- 19:21Speaker 4: I think I was a little surprised by that because
- 19:23Speaker 4: I would have thought that Caleb Williams, who's a born scrambler,
- 19:26Speaker 4: not runner, but scrambler, would do well against the Blitz
- 19:29Speaker 4: because he knows how to get away from it even
- 19:31Speaker 4: for a few seconds.
- 19:32Speaker 3: Yeah, but Brian Flores is totally, he fools you. He'll
- 19:36Speaker 3: blitz heavy one game, then he won't blitz the next.
- 19:39Speaker 3: He's a great defensive coach. Probably should be a head coach.
- 19:41Speaker 3: And meanwhile, on the other side, I didn't think the Bears'
- 19:44Speaker 3: defense looked good last week. Oh, they didn't. And Carson
- 19:46Speaker 3: Wentz looked pretty good in the fourth quarter. I'm a
- 19:49Speaker 3: little worried. you know I I am sort of a
- 19:51Speaker 3: fan of Carson Wentz going back to Philly I don't
- 19:54Speaker 3: know what quarterback.
- 19:54Speaker 4: We're getting yeah I think the Bears defense could make
- 19:56Speaker 4: Carson Wentz look like North Dakota State Carson Wentz yeah
- 19:59Speaker 4: they have that ability one more game real quick Jags
- 20:02Speaker 4: at Broncos, still people, a lot of people talk about
- 20:04Speaker 4: the Broncos, still not the Jags.
- 20:06Speaker 5: How do you feel about this one?
- 20:07Speaker 3: Okay, I picked the Broncos to win the Super Bowl,
- 20:10Speaker 3: so they need to show up, but I got to
- 20:11Speaker 3: be honest, the Jags make me so nervous. They look
- 20:14Speaker 3: so good against Cleveland, but it was against Cleveland. So
- 20:17Speaker 3: do we know that Trevor Lawrence is going to be
- 20:19Speaker 3: dominant in this game? I think it's a much harder assignment.
- 20:21Speaker 4: Yeah, the Jags need a nice national TV win. Trevor Lawrence,
- 20:24Speaker 4: he needs one of those. This game, not on national TV.
- 20:27Speaker 4: A lot of people will see it, the 4-0-5 Eastern window,
- 20:30Speaker 4: but The Jags need a national TV Monday night, Thursday night,
- 20:33Speaker 4: Sunday night win to make people, force people to.
- 20:35Speaker 5: Talk about them.
- 20:36Speaker 3: I want to claim a guy, Parker Washington, wide receiver Jacksonville.
- 20:39Speaker 3: He is hard to stop. Big, big fan.
- 20:43Speaker 5: Of course you called him.
- 20:44Speaker 4: All right, coming up next, NBC Sports' Joshua Perry, their
- 20:47Speaker 4: college football analyst, gets you set for the entire college
- 20:50Speaker 4: football weekend.
- 20:51Speaker 5: LSU, Ole Miss, and much, much more. Stick around. Not
- 20:53Speaker 5: so fast.
- 20:54Speaker 3: Be right back. Welcome back. Not so fast. Perloff and Pabst,
- 20:58Speaker 3: huge college football weekend ahead. We got Western Kentucky at Indiana,
- 21:02Speaker 3: Michigan State at Notre Dame on Peacock at NBC. We
- 21:06Speaker 3: are so fired up, Paul. I know you are just
- 21:08Speaker 3: ready to hit the couch. Start with Big Ten College
- 21:12Speaker 3: Countdown on NBC, of course, with Joshua Perry. Joshua, how
- 21:16Speaker 3: you doing? You look like you could still hit somebody.
- 21:18Speaker 3: How you feeling?
- 21:20Speaker 1: Feeling pretty good. I know I look like I might
- 21:22Speaker 1: be able to hit somebody. I don't know how it
- 21:24Speaker 1: would go if I stepped between the lines. I'm a soft,
- 21:26Speaker 1: older guy right now, so I like where I'm at.
- 21:29Speaker 4: Yeah, but let's not kid each other. You played linebacker
- 21:31Speaker 4: at Ohio State. We played in the band.
- 21:34Speaker 5: I was an archer.
- 21:35Speaker 4: You could kill both of us. All right, let's get
- 21:37Speaker 4: right to it. We're going to talk about the Big
- 21:38Speaker 4: Ten in a second. But LSU and Ole Miss. Lane
- 21:41Speaker 4: Kiffin may be playing games this week with the status
- 21:44Speaker 4: of his quarterback, Sam Levitt. If you were on Ole Miss,
- 21:46Speaker 4: you played defense. Are you preparing for a quarterback or
- 21:49Speaker 4: an offensive system?
- 21:52Speaker 1: I'm preparing for the offensive system more than the quarterback,
- 21:55Speaker 1: but I think he makes the thing go. The interesting
- 21:56Speaker 1: thing about Leavitt is I think he's been more successful
- 21:59Speaker 1: when he can scramble, when he can use his legs,
- 22:02Speaker 1: and if you keep him in the pocket. So the
- 22:04Speaker 1: idea there is to rely on the fact that he
- 22:07Speaker 1: might not be super efficient if he can throw from
- 22:09Speaker 1: the pocket. And if you have the opportunity to hit
- 22:11Speaker 1: him outside of the pocket, you've got to get your
- 22:13Speaker 1: licks in. But it's been his legs that have been
- 22:15Speaker 1: driving the offense so far this year for LSU.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Joshua, obviously you're a little biased here as an Ohio
- 22:20Speaker 3: State alum, but Ohio State loses a close game to Texas,
- 22:23Speaker 3: falls to number six in the AP ranking. Do they
- 22:26Speaker 3: deserve to fall over teams like Miami, who beats up
- 22:30Speaker 3: on nobody? So a bunch of teams that won easy
- 22:33Speaker 3: games advanced past them. Do you think the committee down
- 22:36Speaker 3: the road would penalize Ohio State for this loss?
- 22:40Speaker 1: I think the committee sees it differently than AP voters.
- 22:42Speaker 2: I don't think they should be penalized.
- 22:43Speaker 1: Listen, they led for, I mean, most of the game,
- 22:47Speaker 1: the whole game basically really took it to Texas in
- 22:49Speaker 1: the first half. And to go down, regardless of the outcome,
- 22:53Speaker 1: on the road early in the year, lose by a point,
- 22:56Speaker 1: those might be the best two teams that we just
- 22:58Speaker 1: saw down there. So if you put Texas at one,
- 22:59Speaker 1: I don't think Ohio State can be too far behind.
- 23:02Speaker 2: But the reality of the situation is.
- 23:03Speaker 1: AP voters kind of have that whole mentality where if
- 23:07Speaker 1: you lose you have to drop and it's probably got
- 23:09Speaker 1: to be behind some teams that haven't lost yet I
- 23:11Speaker 1: get it.
- 23:12Speaker 4: I dislike it Ohio State's got a ton of talent
- 23:14Speaker 4: their wide receiver Jeremiah Smith he feels like he's been
- 23:16Speaker 4: a pro since he was 17 years old is he
- 23:19Speaker 4: you've seen a lot of players you played against a
- 23:21Speaker 4: lot of players physical talent pro prospect is he the
- 23:24Speaker 4: best you've ever seen.
- 23:26Speaker 2: Yes, he is.
- 23:26Speaker 1: He's of another world, and it's everything that he does
- 23:29Speaker 1: in his game. He's got great physicality, obviously. The size
- 23:32Speaker 1: is ridiculous. What he can do catching the ball, whether
- 23:34Speaker 1: it's combat catches, whether it's a one-handed catch. You saw
- 23:38Speaker 1: a couple of uncharacteristic drops from him, but typically that's
- 23:41Speaker 1: not stuff that you get. And he's one of the
- 23:43Speaker 1: hardest workers. You talk to anybody around that program. I've
- 23:45Speaker 1: seen it firsthand. The guy grinds and he doesn't really
- 23:48Speaker 1: talk a lot. He just does the work. So I'm
- 23:50Speaker 1: excited to see how he finishes this year. If you
- 23:53Speaker 1: ask me, that is the Heisman Trophy winner. I mean,
- 23:56Speaker 1: we saw what he did against Texas. I don't need
- 23:59Speaker 1: all the campaigning. I don't need people sending out PR packages.
- 24:02Speaker 1: Who is the best player in college football? It's Jeremiah Smith.
- 24:06Speaker 3: I don't know. There's another receiver down in Miami, Malachi Toney.
- 24:09Speaker 3: Do you think that you can have two receivers at
- 24:11Speaker 3: the top of the boat? That'd be awesome.
- 24:13Speaker 2: I mean, I think it's a reality there.
- 24:15Speaker 1: Now Malachi is going to have the same thing that
- 24:17Speaker 1: I think Julian and Jeremiah had. He's got a really
- 24:20Speaker 1: good quarterback in Darian Mensah, so it kind of splits
- 24:22Speaker 1: about there. Malachi Toney is a different player, smaller in size,
- 24:26Speaker 1: but they use him in different roles in that offense,
- 24:29Speaker 1: which is phenomenal. But if you have to ask me
- 24:31Speaker 1: to rank them, it's Jeremiah and then it's a gap
- 24:33Speaker 1: and then it's everybody else playing wide receiver in college football.
- 24:36Speaker 3: All right, Joshua, we had a discussion earlier today about
- 24:39Speaker 3: the Georgia depth chart from 2021. We were wondering how
- 24:43Speaker 3: James Cook, the Bills running back, was not a starter.
- 24:46Speaker 3: Then we got into great college depth charts. Then we
- 24:48Speaker 3: pulled up your depth chart from 2015 Ohio State.
- 24:50Speaker 6: Silly.
- 24:52Speaker 3: I have seven first rounders on your defense. You were
- 24:55Speaker 3: a fourth round pick and you were the 11th player
- 24:58Speaker 3: drafted from your team. Is this the best defensive depth
- 25:02Speaker 3: chart in college football history in your mind or where
- 25:05Speaker 3: do you stack up?
- 25:07Speaker 1: I mean, it might have been, I know Saban had
- 25:09Speaker 1: some really good ones. Kirby had a hell of a
- 25:11Speaker 1: run over the last few years. I played with some
- 25:13Speaker 1: studs and the wild thing in 2014, we won the championship.
- 25:16Speaker 1: I led the team in tackles and nobody was talking
- 25:18Speaker 1: about me because they're talking about Joey Bosa. And they're
- 25:21Speaker 1: talking about Darren Lee, who was a young guy who
- 25:24Speaker 1: hit the scene that year. And Ray Paul McMillan was
- 25:26Speaker 1: a freshman. You know, you had Eli Apple and a
- 25:29Speaker 1: whole bunch of guys who ended up being freshmen. Really
- 25:32Speaker 1: good players. So we had talent. We had competition. And
- 25:34Speaker 1: I think that's lacking a little bit right now with
- 25:36Speaker 1: the way that the talent's flattened out because of the
- 25:39Speaker 1: transfer portal. But every day it was a fight. And
- 25:41Speaker 1: Urban would tell us, I'm recruiting the next guy to
- 25:45Speaker 1: take your job.
- 25:46Speaker 2: So don't let it happen.
- 25:47Speaker 4: So, Joshua, let's talk about Indiana football. I think you're
- 25:49Speaker 4: in Bloomington right now as we speak for your show.
- 25:52Speaker 4: Not a lot of coverage of Indiana, even though they're
- 25:54Speaker 4: the defending national title holders. They're playing some games where
- 25:57Speaker 4: you don't know what Howard means. You don't know what
- 25:59Speaker 4: the Western Kentucky team means. But when you look at
- 26:01Speaker 4: this team with their new quarterback, do you see any
- 26:04Speaker 4: drop-off or is it a little early to tell?
- 26:06Speaker 1: I think it's early to tell. Offensively, I feel pretty
- 26:09Speaker 1: good about where they're at. Josh Hoover's biggest concern was,
- 26:12Speaker 1: will he turn the football over? But I think the
- 26:14Speaker 1: Kurt Cignetti offense is one that is quarterback friendly. They
- 26:17Speaker 1: give easy access throws off of RPOs. They want to
- 26:20Speaker 1: run the football and they'll take the shots down the field.
- 26:23Speaker 1: And by the way, Charlie Becker, really good wide receiver
- 26:25Speaker 1: to throw shots to. Nick Marsh is another one that
- 26:28Speaker 1: they can throw some shots down the field to as well.
- 26:30Speaker 2: My question becomes about their defense.
- 26:32Speaker 1: And it centers around a guy who is like five
- 26:35Speaker 1: foot nine at cornerback who might have been the most
- 26:38Speaker 1: important player in their program in D'Angelo Pons.
- 26:41Speaker 2: He's gone.
- 26:41Speaker 1: But what he allowed them to do last year was
- 26:43Speaker 1: he would take away half the field. They could get
- 26:46Speaker 1: a little bit more exotic in the coverage and they
- 26:48Speaker 1: could let the guys up front eat. And I'm not
- 26:50Speaker 1: sure that they've replaced that. So I'm curious how their
- 26:52Speaker 1: defense adapts as they get in a big template.
- 26:55Speaker 3: Oregon loses to Oklahoma State, a team that a lot
- 26:57Speaker 3: of us had going all the way. What's the fallout
- 27:00Speaker 3: from that loss? Are we giving up on the Ducks?
- 27:04Speaker 1: Man, it's so hard because what we saw was not
- 27:07Speaker 1: pretty at all. And frankly, the game shouldn't have been
- 27:09Speaker 1: that close because Oregon caught some breaks in terms of
- 27:12Speaker 1: some turnovers that were kind of crazy there and turned
- 27:15Speaker 1: them into points. I thought they would be better on
- 27:18Speaker 1: both lines of scrimmage. They got owned on the line
- 27:20Speaker 1: of scrimmage against Oklahoma State. Dante Moore, he was OK,
- 27:23Speaker 1: but it wasn't the number two overall pick in the
- 27:25Speaker 1: draft that we thought he could have been last year.
- 27:28Speaker 1: What about the rest of the talent on the defense?
- 27:30Speaker 1: A lot of guys came back and it's not showing
- 27:32Speaker 1: up right now. So it's too early in the season
- 27:34Speaker 1: to count anybody out. I played for a team that
- 27:36Speaker 1: took a very ugly loss early in the year to
- 27:38Speaker 1: a team we had no business losing to. And we
- 27:40Speaker 1: ended up winning it all. But this Oregon thing doesn't
- 27:43Speaker 1: feel quite right right now. So they need to get
- 27:45Speaker 1: back to work.
- 27:45Speaker 4: All right, Josh, we're going to get you out of
- 27:46Speaker 4: here in a minute. You probably had to go get
- 27:47Speaker 4: a lift in or something like that. You tough guys.
- 27:49Speaker 4: This is a thing called such thing as a dumb question.
- 27:52Speaker 4: You played for the Chargers and the pros. I did
- 27:54Speaker 4: some research. You played a game with the powder blue
- 27:57Speaker 4: throwback Chargers jerseys, which.
- 27:58Speaker 5: Are the ultimate.
- 27:59Speaker 4: Do football players play better when they think they look
- 28:03Speaker 4: good in a uniform and vice versa? If you get
- 28:06Speaker 4: a bad uniform on a wonky team, do you feel
- 28:09Speaker 4: not so great as a player?
- 28:11Speaker 1: I mean, we got to talk about this. Prime talks
- 28:13Speaker 1: about it, right? You look good. You play good. You
- 28:15Speaker 1: play good. You get paid good. So there's something to it.
- 28:17Speaker 1: Everybody wants to have the cool uniforms. We liked wearing
- 28:20Speaker 1: the alternates in college. Certainly loved the powder blues when
- 28:22Speaker 1: I was playing for the Chargers. And then guys will
- 28:25Speaker 1: tell you there's a thing called field swag. You know,
- 28:27Speaker 1: when guys have the sleeves on, they've got the towel
- 28:29Speaker 1: hanging out. You know, the two mouth guards, which I
- 28:32Speaker 1: think is really insane, but the guys like doing it.
- 28:35Speaker 2: They feel like they play better.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Now, for me personally, I was a guy who wore
- 28:39Speaker 1: a neck roll in college, and I had the Mueller.
- 28:42Speaker 2: Black sleeves on, and I used to tape my fingers.
- 28:45Speaker 1: So there wasn't a lot to the field swag, but
- 28:47Speaker 1: a lot of guys need to get in that right
- 28:48Speaker 1: mentality to be able to play well.
- 28:50Speaker 3: Joshua, why are you encouraging him? All he does is
- 28:52Speaker 3: talk about uniforms all day long. Now you're saying it
- 28:54Speaker 3: actually affects your play?
- 28:55Speaker 5: Bring back the neck roll, Joshua.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Oh, the neck roll, I feel like we've lost a
- 29:00Speaker 1: little bit in football. And, you know, we can see it.
- 29:02Speaker 1: The tackling's not as good. And it's because linebackers stopped
- 29:05Speaker 1: wearing neck rolls. We absolutely should bring them back.
- 29:07Speaker 4: And the other thing we've got to get rid of,
- 29:08Speaker 4: we need pants that go down to the knee. We
- 29:10Speaker 4: need knee pads. We need hip pads. We need neck rolls.
- 29:13Speaker 4: We're going to need the bar face mask. Let's get
- 29:14Speaker 4: it going, Josh.
- 29:15Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:16Speaker 1: The biker shorts. It's what the guys like wearing right now.
- 29:18Speaker 1: They want to wear the short shorts, which is fine
- 29:20Speaker 1: with me. We definitely need the face mask that has
- 29:23Speaker 1: the little ring in the front.
- 29:24Speaker 5: Yeah, bullnose.
- 29:26Speaker 2: That's how you knew a guy had no regard for
- 29:28Speaker 2: his own body, if he wore one of those.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Joshua, thanks so much. We'll see you this weekend on NBC.
- 29:34Speaker 2: I appreciate you guys. Thank you.
- 29:36Speaker 3: Oh, my gosh. I can't believe a former NFL player
- 29:39Speaker 3: is actually... telling you, Paul, that uniforms matter.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Yeah, he doesn't know I played in the band and
- 29:44Speaker 4: was an archer.
- 29:45Speaker 5: He probably thinks I played a little football. But you
- 29:46Speaker 5: know what? Uniforms matter.
- 29:48Speaker 4: There's a great point you brought up about different units
- 29:50Speaker 4: in college football. You go back to like Georgia football
- 29:52Speaker 4: with that running back unit, Sonny Michelle, Nick Chubb. And,
- 29:55Speaker 4: you know, Sonny Michelle has to come off the bench.
- 29:58Speaker 4: I go back to that early 2000s University of Miami team.
- 30:01Speaker 4: Frank Gore, Jared Payton, Najee Davenport, Willis McGahee. I mean,
- 30:06Speaker 4: half those guys were coming off the bench.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Oh, my God. The whole defense. You had Ed Reed
- 30:10Speaker 3: and Sean Taylor in the same defensive backfield.
- 30:13Speaker 4: Philma, Phillip Buchanan, Entrel Roll. I mean, it just goes
- 30:17Speaker 4: on and on and on.
- 30:18Speaker 3: I know. We better stop. We need to get to
- 30:21Speaker 3: a break. All right, coming up next, Dan weighs in
- 30:23Speaker 3: on the Lions. Is it possible that Dan Campbell's in trouble?
- 30:27Speaker 3: That's next. Not so fast.
- 30:33Speaker 6: Ben Johnson, yes, great play caller, but I think we
- 30:37Speaker 6: may have overrated a little bit his departure considering the
- 30:41Speaker 6: numbers they put up last year. Third down, that's the
- 30:44Speaker 6: money down, and that's a big, big difference. And we're
- 30:48Speaker 6: seeing that with Caleb Williams, at least so far, putting
- 30:51Speaker 6: up the 59 points. And there's no reason to think
- 30:55Speaker 6: that they won't be one of the highest scoring teams.
- 30:57Speaker 6: The issue is going to be, and this happens with
- 31:00Speaker 6: a lot of teams, including Buffalo, can you be middle
- 31:03Speaker 6: of the pack?
- 31:04Speaker 4: Back on Not So Fast, Pabst and Perloff, this is
- 31:06Speaker 4: the Clip Joint. That was Dan Patrick earlier today on
- 31:09Speaker 4: the Dan Patrick, talking about the Detroit Lions and how
- 31:12Speaker 4: they've progressed since they were this close to the Super
- 31:14Speaker 4: Bowl in the NFC title game. And they lost a
- 31:16Speaker 4: couple years ago the offensive coordinator, Ben Johnson. They lost
- 31:19Speaker 4: Aaron Glenn, the defensive coordinator. I don't think that's a problem.
- 31:22Speaker 4: I don't think Dan thinks that's a problem. I think
- 31:24Speaker 4: he's saying, If this defense could ever stay healthy for
- 31:27Speaker 4: an entire season and a playoff run, they should be
- 31:30Speaker 4: just fine with that offense.
- 31:31Speaker 3: I totally agree. The defense is obviously the problem last night.
- 31:34Speaker 3: But let me ask you this. Ben Johnson leads for Chicago.
- 31:36Speaker 3: All of a sudden, the Bears have probably the best
- 31:38Speaker 3: running game in the league. I don't think the Lions
- 31:41Speaker 3: are the same running team. Last night, they only ran for,
- 31:43Speaker 3: I think, 66 yards versus Buffalo. They were trailing. But
- 31:47Speaker 3: can they run the way they used to? And the
- 31:48Speaker 3: reason I ask about that is can they protect their
- 31:50Speaker 3: defense by... getting first downs on the ground. I'm not
- 31:53Speaker 3: so sure.
- 31:54Speaker 4: And two years ago when they were really hitting it,
- 31:56Speaker 4: they had David Montgomery, the thunder and lightning.
- 31:58Speaker 3: Yes, that worries me a lot.
- 31:59Speaker 4: Now they can't afford to spend any money in their
- 32:01Speaker 4: backfield because Jameer Gibbs got all the money for the backfield.
- 32:04Speaker 4: So they have a bunch of, you know, nobodies in
- 32:06Speaker 4: their backfield and he has no help.
- 32:08Speaker 3: That's a huge problem. I worry he's going to kind
- 32:10Speaker 3: of wear down through the season. And he was their
- 32:12Speaker 3: best receiver last night for a chunk, too. He caught
- 32:14Speaker 3: that touchdown. I love Jameer Gibbs, but I want to
- 32:16Speaker 3: protect him.
- 32:17Speaker 4: Let's say, for instance, the Lions have a subpar season
- 32:20Speaker 4: and don't make the playoffs. Is Dan Campbell ever on
- 32:23Speaker 4: a hot seat? He feels perpetually on a cold seat
- 32:25Speaker 4: because they love him.
- 32:26Speaker 3: Well, he has an excuse with all the injuries. So
- 32:29Speaker 3: are they going to be 7-10 with half the roster
- 32:33Speaker 3: on the IR? Or are they going to just disappoint?
- 32:36Speaker 3: What situation are we talking about?
- 32:37Speaker 5: Well, I guess what I'm saying is the national media
- 32:40Speaker 5: thinks he's awesome. He gives all those press conference quotes.
- 32:42Speaker 4: I don't know sometimes if the local fans are in
- 32:45Speaker 4: sync with the national media.
- 32:46Speaker 3: But think of this franchise. They have not had a
- 32:48Speaker 3: great coaching history. I go back to Wayne Fonts. They
- 32:51Speaker 3: have never liked their coach. Dan Campbell is a step
- 32:53Speaker 3: up from everyone they had before him. So I kind
- 32:56Speaker 3: of agree. I think he's safe, even if they have
- 32:58Speaker 3: a losing record. But if they're healthy, they're not going
- 33:00Speaker 3: to have a losing record.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Okay, Lions head coach Dan Campbell, not the best night
- 33:03Speaker 4: last night because he faced Josh Allen. And, you know,
- 33:06Speaker 4: here he is after the game talking about facing Superman.
- 33:09Speaker 7: That quarterback makes things very difficult, you know. If you
- 33:14Speaker 7: don't keep him in the pocket, keep him contained, man,
- 33:17Speaker 7: he can hurt you. And he did that on multiple times,
- 33:20Speaker 7: you know, on multiple occasions. We've got to clean up
- 33:22Speaker 7: a lot of things on defense right now, particularly in
- 33:24Speaker 7: the back end.
- 33:26Speaker 2: And.
- 33:27Speaker 7: And then offensively, you play an opponent as potent as this,
- 33:30Speaker 7: we don't have the luxury of spitting and sputtering early.
- 33:33Speaker 7: That's the thing. You don't have that luxury. And we
- 33:36Speaker 7: knew that coming into this game.
- 33:39Speaker 2: Wow.
- 33:39Speaker 3: You know what? They look confused on defense. There were
- 33:41Speaker 3: so many open guys. The Palmer touchdown, there wasn't anyone
- 33:45Speaker 3: within 20 yards of him. I think that's partly Josh Allen.
- 33:48Speaker 3: I think it's also partly injuries. Inexperience. Inexperience, right. Their
- 33:51Speaker 3: two safeties are out. I think Dan Campbell's in a
- 33:54Speaker 3: tough spot defensively. But I get back to the other
- 33:56Speaker 3: topic from earlier. Josh Allen is totally unstoppable right now.
- 33:59Speaker 3: So if the Houston Texans cannot stop Josh Allen, I
- 34:03Speaker 3: don't think the Detroit Lions had a prayer.
- 34:05Speaker 5: I mean, look at these rollouts. There's no one even close.
- 34:07Speaker 5: You said it earlier.
- 34:07Speaker 4: Aiden Hutchinson seems like a one-man team, like one of
- 34:10Speaker 4: those high schools where there's one star and a bunch
- 34:12Speaker 4: of little guys. He was huffing and puffing out there,
- 34:14Speaker 4: but they don't have the luxury of giving Aiden Hutchinson
- 34:16Speaker 4: any rest.
- 34:17Speaker 3: And I think Josh Allen's the only quarterback where defenders actually—
- 34:20Speaker 3: make a choice. Do I really want to hit this guy?
- 34:23Speaker 4: He's like Ben Roethlisberger with running ability.
- 34:25Speaker 3: And then you get James Cook. Forget it. It's an
- 34:27Speaker 3: impossible situation. I don't know what Dan Campbell could have
- 34:31Speaker 3: said in that situation, but they obviously had no answers.
- 34:34Speaker 3: And I kind of blame Calvin Shepard, the defensive coordinator.
- 34:36Speaker 4: I will counter that by saying nobody could stop him.
- 34:39Speaker 4: I do look at Chris Jones and the guys on
- 34:42Speaker 4: the Chiefs and say, they've got to experience enough defense
- 34:44Speaker 4: with enough playmakers to to chase him around and get
- 34:47Speaker 4: him out of the pocket how they want. So I
- 34:49Speaker 4: think that's a defense that can not control him, but
- 34:52Speaker 4: semi-control him.
- 34:53Speaker 3: He has torched that defense in the playoffs. Remember the
- 34:57Speaker 3: 13-second game? Josh Allen did whatever he wanted.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Look at number 98 for the Lions, by the way.
- 35:01Speaker 4: He looked like me running around out there. He looked
- 35:03Speaker 4: like he was dizzy.
- 35:04Speaker 3: I'm getting a little theme here that you're trying to
- 35:06Speaker 3: sell the Chiefs as still the team to beat in
- 35:08Speaker 3: the AFC. We'll get into it.
- 35:10Speaker 5: We love recency bias.
- 35:11Speaker 3: We love it. New Highmark Stadium was awesome last night,
- 35:14Speaker 3: and Joe Brady, the Bills coach, tried a new field
- 35:16Speaker 3: goal strategy, and he explained why.
- 35:19Speaker 8: Anytime you can have a black screen, you know, it
- 35:21Speaker 8: makes it a little easier. Whatever you have to do,
- 35:23Speaker 8: you have to do the same for the opponent, right?
- 35:25Speaker 8: And you put something on the screen, you see the
- 35:28Speaker 8: yellow post, it can be a potential of a distraction. And,
- 35:31Speaker 8: you know, so... whatever we need to be able to
- 35:35Speaker 8: help our kicking game, that's what they're going to kind
- 35:38Speaker 8: of do. We have to do the same for them
- 35:39Speaker 8: as well.
- 35:39Speaker 4: So this seems like a new or maybe new-ish directive
- 35:42Speaker 4: from the NFL. Whatever's on one jumbotron behind the goalpost
- 35:45Speaker 4: has to be on the other. I would like it
- 35:47Speaker 4: to be the other way. Imagine that the home team
- 35:50Speaker 4: got to put whatever they want on the jumbotron, like
- 35:52Speaker 4: Chris Farley doing the Chippendales dance or something like that.
- 35:55Speaker 4: To try to distract your opponent. And then nice, clean,
- 35:57Speaker 4: black screen so your kicker can focus.
- 35:59Speaker 3: I think teams do do that. I think they do
- 36:01Speaker 3: try to use... Yeah, wait, is there a new rule?
- 36:04Speaker 3: I think he was making a choice.
- 36:06Speaker 4: He just said, Joe Brady, that we have to do
- 36:08Speaker 4: whatever for the other team. It goes back to that
- 36:10Speaker 4: story from the summer that you talked about. Did Belichick
- 36:13Speaker 4: and the Patriots, of course Belichick and the Patriots, have
- 36:15Speaker 4: like pink things on the side who just lightly distract
- 36:18Speaker 4: the kickers.
- 36:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I like the NBA when they're all
- 36:20Speaker 3: doing this thing in the crowd. New Highmark, by the way,
- 36:23Speaker 3: it feels like the perfect football stadium. I was a
- 36:25Speaker 3: little critical of them not putting a dome, but they
- 36:28Speaker 3: nailed it last night.
- 36:29Speaker 4: It's a fun place. You got the old building in
- 36:31Speaker 4: the distance. You had the sun going down and all
- 36:33Speaker 4: the celebrities there.
- 36:33Speaker 5: It was really cool. All right, next up.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Oh boy, here we go. C.D.
- 36:37Speaker 4: Lamb, he knows what it's like being a Cowboy, a
- 36:39Speaker 4: focal point. And he talked about how whatever happens in
- 36:42Speaker 4: game one or two, the media will overreact with the Cowboys.
- 36:46Speaker 9: I knew that my year two. Everything is an overreaction
- 36:52Speaker 9: when it comes to a star. Everything that we do
- 36:56Speaker 9: is going to be, again, we look at it on
- 36:59Speaker 9: a magnifying glass.
- 37:01Speaker 3: It's just.
- 37:04Speaker 9: Just make sure that you're putting the best stuff out
- 37:08Speaker 9: because the camera's always on you, no matter what.
- 37:12Speaker 3: I don't know what he's talking about. I just fired
- 37:13Speaker 3: Brian Schottenheimer if they're open to it.
- 37:16Speaker 4: Of course he's right. Of course we overreact to the Cowboys.
- 37:18Speaker 4: It would be fun one year to overreact to them winning.
- 37:20Speaker 4: It would be so refreshing. I'm not a Cowboys fan,
- 37:23Speaker 4: but I'm not a Cowboys hater in either way. But
- 37:24Speaker 4: I'm getting to the point where you hear the same
- 37:26Speaker 4: story year after year. We're going back to the 90s
- 37:29Speaker 4: since they've been a real contender for a Super Bowl. 90s, that's...
- 37:33Speaker 4: It's like before social media.
- 37:34Speaker 3: Well, remember with Mike McCarthy, they were in 12-5 three
- 37:37Speaker 3: years in a row. The problem was the playoffs.
- 37:39Speaker 4: The problem is the playoffs, and they never advance deep
- 37:41Speaker 4: in the playoffs or make you think that they're going
- 37:43Speaker 4: to advance deep in the playoffs. I almost want the
- 37:45Speaker 4: Cowboys to win. It's like Susan Lucci finally winning the whatever,
- 37:49Speaker 4: the Tony. I just want to see a new story
- 37:51Speaker 4: with the Cowboys. I want to see them roll through
- 37:53Speaker 4: some people. just to see that overreaction rather than everything's
- 37:57Speaker 4: going poorly overreacted.
- 37:58Speaker 3: You know, I'm not sure that's what I want to
- 38:00Speaker 3: hear from CeeDee Lamb. He seems a little too laid
- 38:02Speaker 3: back at times, maybe not aggressive enough. I want to
- 38:05Speaker 3: hear him say, we're not going to accept 0-2. We're
- 38:09Speaker 3: not going to accept last week's loss. Instead, he's like, wow,
- 38:11Speaker 3: you guys are overreacting. You know what? If they had won,
- 38:14Speaker 3: he could say that.
- 38:14Speaker 4: But, Pearl, you know one of my favorite things in yours?
- 38:17Speaker 4: When you're lethargic and you're losing, you don't care.
- 38:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:21Speaker 4: But if you're lethargic, then you're cool like Joe Montana.
- 38:24Speaker 3: Joe Montana.
- 38:26Speaker 4: But everyone thought Joe Montana's cool and calculated. But then
- 38:29Speaker 4: you have a guy like Jay Cutler who looked like
- 38:32Speaker 4: he wanted to be elsewhere.
- 38:33Speaker 5: He doesn't care. He'd be cool if they were winning.
- 38:35Speaker 3: Well, that's the problem with CeeDee Lamb. Remember that playoff
- 38:37Speaker 3: loss where he dropped a pass and he looked ejected?
- 38:39Speaker 3: He's got to lift it up a little bit.
- 38:41Speaker 5: Got to pump it up.
- 38:42Speaker 3: It's NFL football, Paul.
- 38:43Speaker 5: It is NFL football. Not so fast.
- 38:45Speaker 4: Paps and Perloff, every week we get you ready for
- 38:47Speaker 4: the college football weekend with a little getting the Heisman.
- 38:50Speaker 3: Here we go, Perl.
- 38:51Speaker 5: Look at that guy. Losing a little on the top,
- 38:54Speaker 5: the Heisman Trophy this year.
- 38:56Speaker 4: But here we go. This is a big Heisman weekend.
- 38:58Speaker 4: And for your guy, who you love, Trinidad Chambliss, he
- 39:01Speaker 4: was one of your picks for the Heisman. The Ole
- 39:03Speaker 4: Miss quarterback, this is the kind of game where you
- 39:04Speaker 4: get to make a statement.
- 39:07Speaker 5: National TV versus LSU.
- 39:09Speaker 2: There he is.
- 39:10Speaker 4: He's now sixth. This is the perfect opportunity. The entire
- 39:13Speaker 4: world's going to watch this. People who don't like college
- 39:15Speaker 4: football are going to tune into LSU Ole Miss.
- 39:17Speaker 5: This is his night.
- 39:18Speaker 4: Now, a long way to go, but this is how
- 39:20Speaker 4: you secure the invitation to New York night.
- 39:24Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. I mean, he's breaking Heisman by peaking in
- 39:27Speaker 3: September if he wins. You've got to peak later on.
- 39:29Speaker 2: Fair point.
- 39:30Speaker 3: But he's obviously outstanding. And not only that, he is
- 39:33Speaker 3: playing to be an NFL possible first-round pick despite his size.
- 39:36Speaker 3: A lot on the line here. And LSU's defense looks
- 39:39Speaker 3: salty against him.
- 39:40Speaker 4: He's also very root-for-able because he's the spurned quarterback of
- 39:43Speaker 4: Lane Kiffin.
- 39:44Speaker 3: And Sam Levitt on the other side, too. I don't
- 39:46Speaker 3: think he's played great so far, but he could get
- 39:48Speaker 3: in the Heisman. I got a game for you for
- 39:50Speaker 3: the Heisman, though, Paul. SMU at Louisville. We haven't talked
- 39:54Speaker 3: much about SMU. They didn't look good week one against
- 39:56Speaker 3: Florida State. But they have a quarterback, Kevin Jennings, who
- 39:59Speaker 3: has great numbers. Really, really good college quarterback. If SMU
- 40:02Speaker 3: goes on a run, he's a possible Heisman. And you
- 40:06Speaker 3: know I love Lincoln Kienholz.
- 40:07Speaker 5: Yeah, that's your guy.
- 40:08Speaker 3: That's my guy. Everyone's catching up to him. I heard
- 40:10Speaker 3: Mel Kiper gushing about him the other day. Big guy,
- 40:13Speaker 3: strong arm, can run. So I think the SMU-Louisville game, 330,
- 40:18Speaker 3: ESPN 2 doesn't even get major ESPN. Wow. But some
- 40:21Speaker 3: Heisman consideration for it.
- 40:22Speaker 4: You know the Heismanments as well as anybody, as do I.
- 40:25Speaker 4: If you're an LSU, you can get your guy in
- 40:27Speaker 4: the Heisman. If you're Alabama, no problem. If you're Louisville
- 40:30Speaker 4: or SMU, you need to run the table. Then your
- 40:33Speaker 4: guy gets invited to do it.
- 40:33Speaker 3: Yeah, Tyler Shuck was great, and he didn't get even
- 40:36Speaker 3: a sniff. There are a lot of great Louisville quarterbacks.
- 40:38Speaker 3: Teddy Bridgewater didn't get the invite. SMU hasn't been good
- 40:41Speaker 3: for a long time. We don't really know about SMU
- 40:43Speaker 3: because they disappeared for a long time, but Kevin Jennings
- 40:45Speaker 3: doesn't get a lot of buzz.
- 40:46Speaker 4: Lamar Jackson did bring home the hardware. All right, coming
- 40:49Speaker 4: up next, conservative criticism.
- 40:51Speaker 3: Oh, and.
- 40:52Speaker 5: Keep it friendly.
- 40:53Speaker 4: And I want a couple bets, Perloff. Keep it friendly
- 40:55Speaker 4: bets and the feel good.
- 40:56Speaker 3: Stick around.
- 40:57Speaker 5: This is Not So Fast.
- 40:59Speaker 4: Paul Papps, Andrew Perloff here for Not So Fast on
- 41:02Speaker 4: NBC Sports Now and Peacock. Now let's get to the
- 41:04Speaker 4: pub and grub of the week, Perloff. And I can
- 41:06Speaker 4: tell you're hungry by that look in your face.
- 41:08Speaker 5: We're going to go down the big game, LSU and
- 41:10Speaker 5: Ole Miss. Oxford, Mississippi.
- 41:12Speaker 4: I've been there a long time ago. Great food town.
- 41:15Speaker 4: I used to go to a place called the Hoka.
- 41:17Speaker 5: No longer there, unfortunately. We're going to the Blind Pig Pub.
- 41:21Speaker 5: Your thoughts early.
- 41:22Speaker 3: Well, first of all, is it on the square?
- 41:24Speaker 5: It's just off the square.
- 41:25Speaker 2: Great question.
- 41:25Speaker 4: I like where your head's at, Pearl. So it's walking
- 41:27Speaker 4: us to a lot of other good choices. The Blind
- 41:29Speaker 4: Pig Pub. Lots of drinks, lots of food. I hear
- 41:32Speaker 4: there's a pool table. Good amount of TVs. Very friendly.
- 41:36Speaker 5: Not divy, but a divy adjacent.
- 41:39Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm feeling like this is a good food place.
- 41:41Speaker 5: It is a good food place.
- 41:42Speaker 3: Pork products, obviously.
- 41:43Speaker 5: Lots of pork products.
- 41:44Speaker 4: Now, their hammer sandwich, they call it the Crosby Killer. Turkey, ham,
- 41:49Speaker 4: ribeye steak, bacon, Swiss, cheddar, tomato, peppers, chips, lettuce, honey, mustard,
- 41:55Speaker 4: all on one hoagie for the low, low price of
- 41:57Speaker 4: I don't care what it costs.
- 41:59Speaker 3: Wait, is this some sort of magical hoagie? How do
- 42:01Speaker 3: you fit all that into one hoagie? Let me see that.
- 42:03Speaker 5: There's like Eight things. There's like 12 things on one hoagie.
- 42:05Speaker 4: What a great place. Blind Pig Pub, Oxford, Mississippi. Send
- 42:09Speaker 4: yours for Pub and Grub of the Week. But make
- 42:11Speaker 4: sure you go watch games, eat food, and drink something.
- 42:15Speaker 3: Welcome back. Not so fast. Furlough Paps. NBC Sports Now. Peacock,
- 42:20Speaker 3: you know, we talk football and we talk food, Paul.
- 42:22Speaker 4: Yeah, we did the Lord's work there. That's going to
- 42:24Speaker 4: get us the Emmy. Previewing Oxford, Mississippi food choices.
- 42:27Speaker 5: Blind Pig.
- 42:27Speaker 3: Check it out. By the way, lots of choices. I've
- 42:29Speaker 3: never been to Oxford, I have to admit. We've got
- 42:31Speaker 3: to call Lane and get you down there. The Grove? Oh,
- 42:33Speaker 3: that would be awesome. All right, let's look ahead. Monday's
- 42:36Speaker 3: headline today, Paul. What are we going to be talking
- 42:39Speaker 3: about Monday morning?
- 42:40Speaker 5: I hate to say, but I'm going to lead with
- 42:41Speaker 5: the negative.
- 42:42Speaker 4: If the Chargers go 0-2 and the Chargers lose to
- 42:45Speaker 4: the Raiders, it's disaster time because of the schedule after that.
- 42:49Speaker 4: If the Chargers go 0-2, the shine will be off
- 42:51Speaker 4: Jim Harbaugh, their offensive coordinator, their quarterback.
- 42:54Speaker 5: Everyone will bail, like you said earlier in the show.
- 42:56Speaker 5: If this happens.
- 42:57Speaker 4: It sets up a season where not only don't make
- 42:59Speaker 4: the playoffs, you could be, look at the upcoming schedule.
- 43:02Speaker 5: It's absolutely brutal. And the easy game, the easy game
- 43:05Speaker 5: is the Jets, and they're getting better.
- 43:07Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I think there's a lot of debate
- 43:09Speaker 3: about Justin Herbert. Is he really the elite quarterback we
- 43:12Speaker 3: think he is? He sure didn't look it in week one.
- 43:14Speaker 3: These are some really, really challenging defenses. At Seattle, it's
- 43:18Speaker 3: going to make any quarterback look bad, so they've got
- 43:21Speaker 3: to figure it out quickly. Okay, I'm going to stay
- 43:24Speaker 3: in the AFC West for my headline. Kansas City Chiefs
- 43:28Speaker 3: play on Sunday night against the Colts. The Colts did
- 43:31Speaker 3: not look good against Baltimore. I think Kansas City has
- 43:34Speaker 3: a new model, Paul, and I'm so excited about this.
- 43:36Speaker 3: Andy Reid is going to keep running the football. Ken Walker,
- 43:40Speaker 3: Kenneth Walker IV, is going to have another big game.
- 43:43Speaker 3: I think we're going to come out of Sunday night thinking, oh,
- 43:45Speaker 3: Casey's back in the Super Bowl mix. They're a very
- 43:48Speaker 3: different team. I don't think they're going to use a
- 43:50Speaker 3: lot of Mahomes. I think they're going to play conservative
- 43:52Speaker 3: football and win with defense and running, which is very unusual.
- 43:55Speaker 4: This is fantastic for Ken Walker. Let him carry the ball.
- 43:57Speaker 4: Let Mahomes throw it 20 times and get home safely.
- 43:59Speaker 4: I'm totally with you.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, Mahomes has never had a running back
- 44:02Speaker 3: or really any kind of skill player like that who
- 44:04Speaker 3: can chew the clock up. I'm really excited about KC
- 44:07Speaker 3: because Andy Reid, you know, he always passes the ball.
- 44:10Speaker 3: It doesn't matter who his running back is. Now he's
- 44:13Speaker 3: being forced to try a different style and it's working.
- 44:15Speaker 4: All right, Perloff, let's do a little keep it friendly here.
- 44:17Speaker 4: A couple side bets, a little keep it friendly, a
- 44:19Speaker 4: little college, a little pro. Actual money trading hands. We
- 44:22Speaker 4: usually do 20 a game unless you want to call
- 44:24Speaker 4: it differently. Let's start with the hammer. LSU, Ole Miss,
- 44:27Speaker 4: LSU giving three. I'm going to let you pick on
- 44:29Speaker 4: this one.
- 44:29Speaker 2: Okay.
- 44:30Speaker 5: I'll take the other side.
- 44:31Speaker 3: All the emotion, of course, points to Ole Miss, and
- 44:33Speaker 3: that's why I like LSU big time. I think they're
- 44:36Speaker 3: a more talented roster. They won the transfer portal. Ole
- 44:39Speaker 3: Miss is a great story. That doesn't win football games, Paul.
- 44:42Speaker 5: It doesn't.
- 44:42Speaker 3: I think LSU, just like they did against Clemson, is
- 44:45Speaker 3: really hungry. I think they're using all this negative attention
- 44:48Speaker 3: as bulletin board material, and they come out strong. I
- 44:50Speaker 3: like Ole Miss. I like the food at Ole Miss,
- 44:52Speaker 3: and I'm going to take them outright. I don't need
- 44:54Speaker 3: the points. Bengals at Texans. Texans given two and a half.
- 44:57Speaker 3: What a fantastic game this is. Okay, Joe Burrow, tell
- 45:00Speaker 3: me about his back. This does not sound good, Paul.
- 45:03Speaker 4: When I heard that his back hurt, my back started
- 45:05Speaker 4: to hurt. I'm not even a Bengals fan.
- 45:06Speaker 3: And what's the one team you don't want to play
- 45:08Speaker 3: when your back hurts? It's the Houston Texans who are
- 45:10Speaker 3: going to be extra salty after losing the Bills, a
- 45:13Speaker 3: game they should have won. I think Houston's defense is
- 45:16Speaker 3: the story of this game. I'm taking the Texans to cover.
- 45:19Speaker 4: I will begrudgingly back into the, no pun intended, the Bengals.
- 45:23Speaker 4: Jaguars at Broncos. Broncos giving two and a half. Nobody
- 45:26Speaker 4: talking about the Jags.
- 45:27Speaker 5: I'll go first. I'm going to take the Jags, and
- 45:29Speaker 5: I'll give you six points.
- 45:31Speaker 3: Ooh, I'm not taking that bet, Paul.
- 45:32Speaker 6: Really?
- 45:33Speaker 3: Well, if you give me six, maybe. I don't think
- 45:35Speaker 3: the Broncos have figured out their play-calling situation. Davis Webb
- 45:38Speaker 3: stepped in in week one. They could barely get the
- 45:41Speaker 3: play in on time. I do not see a massive
- 45:43Speaker 3: improvement there. I'm with you. The Jags will finally get
- 45:45Speaker 3: some attention.
- 45:46Speaker 5: All right, last one. Steelers, Pats. Pats giving five and
- 45:48Speaker 5: a half. I'm going to let you pick.
- 45:49Speaker 3: Okay, Pats have had 10 days off. I think the
- 45:52Speaker 3: Pats are angry after how they lost the opener.
- 45:55Speaker 2: Listen.
- 45:56Speaker 3: Big line. Yeah, five and a half is a lot,
- 45:59Speaker 3: but Aaron Rodgers did not look good against Atlanta. He
- 46:01Speaker 3: looked fine. I really like New England to bounce back.
- 46:04Speaker 3: That's one of my big bounce back teams because they're
- 46:05Speaker 3: going to be there. I think what we saw in
- 46:07Speaker 3: week one was an anomaly. Drake May plays much better,
- 46:10Speaker 3: and they get a big win.
- 46:11Speaker 4: Okay, I'll take the Steelers to cover but not win.
- 46:13Speaker 4: All right, moving on to constructive criticism here on Not
- 46:16Speaker 4: So Fast.
- 46:17Speaker 5: You tell us what you think. We tell you what
- 46:18Speaker 5: we think. Here we go. Constructive criticism.
- 46:20Speaker 3: First one.
- 46:22Speaker 4: We'll run through these. Feels like a homecoming game start.
- 46:25Speaker 4: Sticking with your pick from Dustin in South Dakota. Well snarked, Dustin.
- 46:29Speaker 4: He's asking if I'm sticking with my Lions pick to
- 46:32Speaker 4: be in and win the Super Bowl.
- 46:33Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm sticking. I'm not bailing.
- 46:34Speaker 4: You don't bail after week one or week two.
- 46:36Speaker 3: Week four, maybe.
- 46:37Speaker 5: Next one.
- 46:38Speaker 3: Got a lot of injuries, Paul. It's not your fault.
- 46:40Speaker 3: There are a lot of injuries.
- 46:41Speaker 5: Oh, this is great.
- 46:42Speaker 4: I saw this came out. Old Spice has a new display,
- 46:45Speaker 4: the Legends Edition, the Classic Edition. Walter Payton soap, body spray.
- 46:50Speaker 4: I'm going to buy all of it. It's called the
- 46:53Speaker 4: Stiff Arm Collection. I couldn't believe it. I'm leaving the show,
- 46:56Speaker 4: driving to whatever store, and buying as much of the
- 46:58Speaker 4: display I can.
- 46:59Speaker 3: Okay, I love it, and I know you love Walter Payton,
- 47:01Speaker 3: but why isn't Caleb Williams doing this promo? Why are
- 47:04Speaker 3: they still doing Walter Payton promos?
- 47:06Speaker 4: Be very careful here. It sounds like you're saying something
- 47:08Speaker 4: negative about Walter Payton. My mind's going to just.
- 47:10Speaker 3: All right.
- 47:11Speaker 5: But that's fantastic. That's pretty cool. All right, last one.
- 47:13Speaker 4: Constructor criticism. Are we done with that? I'm curious how
- 47:16Speaker 4: you all feel about this debate. Nothing will equal... Even
- 47:20Speaker 4: all games are played in a dome. DP's opinion that
- 47:23Speaker 4: bad weather is bad for a playoff game really bums
- 47:25Speaker 4: me out. This guy, Don, says... Outdoor football is his thing.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Look.
- 47:29Speaker 3: That's your thing, too, sometimes.
- 47:31Speaker 4: Yeah, we're fighting the good fight here, but the domes
- 47:33Speaker 4: are coming or the glass tops or whatever you want
- 47:35Speaker 4: to call them.
- 47:36Speaker 3: Well, for me, this gets down to Josh Allen. I
- 47:38Speaker 3: want to see Josh Allen now at some point in
- 47:40Speaker 3: his career win. I think weather is one of the
- 47:42Speaker 3: things that could keep him from doing that. So I'm down.
- 47:45Speaker 3: I want to see in January good football. I kind
- 47:49Speaker 3: of understand the dome argument.
- 47:50Speaker 4: Okay, it's time for the feel-good as we wrap up
- 47:52Speaker 4: a great week on Not So Fast. Thanks to all
- 47:54Speaker 4: the team here getting a good week.
- 47:56Speaker 5: Here we go, the feel-good.
- 47:57Speaker 4: Pearl, I'm taking you down to Florence, Alabama, University of
- 48:01Speaker 4: Northern Alabama, my Lions. They unveiled their new on-campus stadium,
- 48:05Speaker 4: Saturday versus Alcorn State. The fans will be out. I
- 48:08Speaker 4: call them the Purple Rain, the fans.
- 48:09Speaker 5: I don't know if they do.
- 48:10Speaker 4: The tailgate area is called the Pines. This place looks great.
- 48:13Speaker 4: And here at Not So Fast, we celebrate programs that
- 48:15Speaker 4: are growing and building.
- 48:17Speaker 5: UNA, we love it. If you're in Florence, Alabama, hit
- 48:20Speaker 5: up 4th Street Barbecue. That's what I'm told.
- 48:22Speaker 3: Oh, man, Alabama Barbecue. Good reputation, Paul.
- 48:26Speaker 2: Absolutely. No doubt.
- 48:27Speaker 4: White barbecue sauce. Always check that out at Alabama. But
- 48:29Speaker 4: that's cool to see a team up and coming, brand
- 48:31Speaker 4: new building. Not Highmark, but it's very, very cool.
- 48:34Speaker 3: I'm going to see that score on Saturday. Oh, the
- 48:36Speaker 3: Purple Rain. That's the one Paul gave a name to.
- 48:38Speaker 3: Love it.
- 48:39Speaker 4: That's Not So Fast for the week.
- 48:40Speaker 5: I'm Pabst. He's Perloff.
- 48:42Speaker 4: Tune in Monday for the recap of the entire NFL
- 48:44Speaker 4: season on the Dan Patrick Show. And right afterwards, Not
- 48:46Speaker 4: So Fast from noon Eastern daytime.
- 48:49Speaker 5: That's it.
