- 2:18Speaker 4: I haven't worked I've worked with Kenda two or three times,
- 2:21Speaker 4: hadn't obviously no Andrew, but hadn't been on the radio
- 2:23Speaker 4: with him before today, done podcast, But it was a
- 2:25Speaker 4: good show.
- 2:26Speaker 2: You you are the star of ninety eight five. This
- 2:29Speaker 2: time of year, I won't go you are you are?
- 2:32Speaker 2: You are on the you are on TV The other

- 2:34Speaker 4: I was You're on TV Film TV tomorrow with Bill
- 2:37Speaker 4: Perry tend to too.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Love that, love that. So before we get rolling here
- 2:42Speaker 2: now and now that I've ribbed Alex enough for for
- 2:44Speaker 2: being the star of ninety eight five for the next week. Uh, Hey,
- 2:47Speaker 2: Patriots fans, if you want to see Toyota's best offers,
- 2:49Speaker 2: including those not seen on TV, go by go to
- 2:52Speaker 2: buy Atoto. Toyota dot Com is Toyota's official website for
- 2:56Speaker 2: deals from the official vehicle of the New England Patriots,
- 2:59Speaker 2: Toyota let's go places and easy to drink, easy to enjoy,
- 3:03Speaker 2: but like the official beer sponsor of your New England Patriots.
- 3:06Speaker 2: All right, let's talk a little bit of Bill's Patriots here,
- 3:10Speaker 2: and uh, my reaction after this game was met with
- 3:14Speaker 2: with some hostility. I would say some pushback, pushback, some
- 3:18Speaker 2: better word, some pushback, because I I gave the Patriots
- 3:22Speaker 2: some flowers in this game for competing against a much
- 3:25Speaker 2: much better Buffalo Bill's team. And there are certainly nippicks
- 3:30Speaker 2: of their coaching performance on Sunday, almost as Saturday, I'll
- 3:34Speaker 2: thrown off. There's certainly nitpicks of their performance on Sunday,
- 3:37Speaker 2: which I'm sure we will get to. We were actually
- 3:40Speaker 2: texting about this when I was traveling back and I
- 3:43Speaker 2: was texting with you and we were kind of in
- 3:45Speaker 2: disagreement on this then. I don't know if your opinions
- 3:48Speaker 2: have changed too much, but we'll get to that. My
- 3:51Speaker 2: biggest takeaway from this game against the Bills is I
- 3:56Speaker 2: wanted to see proof of concept from Girodmeo and his
- 4:01Speaker 2: coaching staff that they could go into it and coach
- 4:09Speaker 2: a game with a concise, clear plan that they could execute.
- 4:14Speaker 2: It's one thing to have all these grandiose ideas of, oh,
- 4:18Speaker 2: this is how we're gonna contend or beat Buffalo, but
- 4:21Speaker 2: the reality is that their team and their personnel cannot
- 4:25Speaker 2: necessarily execute the most complicated or the most sophisticated of
- 4:29Speaker 2: game plans. So do you have a game plan that
- 4:33Speaker 2: not only makes sense for how your strains versus the
- 4:36Speaker 2: Bills weaknesses and what you could do to beat the Bills,
- 4:40Speaker 2: that you can also execute? And that's the name of
- 4:42Speaker 2: the game, right that's coaching and going into this game offensively.
- 4:46Speaker 2: I think we all were refreshed by the fact that
- 4:49Speaker 2: they went out there and took Drake may first spin
- 4:52Speaker 2: a little bit, you know, let him run around a
- 4:54Speaker 2: little bit let him throw down the field early on
- 4:57Speaker 2: in this game against man coverage, which I thought was
- 4:59Speaker 2: crucial to their fast start, was actually taking some shots
- 5:03Speaker 2: against press man and allowing him to go make plays
- 5:06Speaker 2: when he sees man to man coverage instead of what
- 5:08Speaker 2: they did to against Arizona. And the second thing defensively,
- 5:12Speaker 2: I was even more impressed. And this goes to another
- 5:15Speaker 2: big picture thing that I wanted to point out. This
- 5:19Speaker 2: was truly the first time that Gerrodmeo and DeMarcus Covington,
- 5:25Speaker 2: in their respective roles, currently played Josh Allen. And I
- 5:30Speaker 2: know that we have a little bit of different opinion
- 5:32Speaker 2: on Josh Allen, but the point is is that Josh
- 5:35Speaker 2: Allen is the king of the division right now and
- 5:38Speaker 2: he's not going anywhere anytime soon. The Bills aren't going anywhere.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Josh Allen's not going anywhere. So in order for this
- 5:45Speaker 2: regime to get where they want to go, even if
- 5:48Speaker 2: it's two to three years from now, they need to
- 5:50Speaker 2: start laying the foundation of how we are going to
- 5:54Speaker 2: play defense against Josh Allen and go out there and
- 5:57Speaker 2: find a way to solve this problem that really goes
- 6:00Speaker 2: back to twenty twenty, where they've more or less other
- 6:03Speaker 2: than a win aided twenty twenty one game, have not
- 6:06Speaker 2: had a lot of answers for Josh Allen. So in
- 6:09Speaker 2: this game, I felt like defensively, they had two clear
- 6:12Speaker 2: concise goals. Keep him in the pocket, and we're going
- 6:15Speaker 2: to play man to man coverage and to your point
- 6:17Speaker 2: your side of the street a little bit. A big
- 6:20Speaker 2: part of that man to man coverage to me was
- 6:23Speaker 2: that they no longer have Stefan Diggs, so there's not
- 6:26Speaker 2: this trump card that Buffalo can throw at you where
- 6:29Speaker 2: they have this receiver that is uncoverable in man to
- 6:32Speaker 2: man one on one. And so the Patriots, I felt like, said, well,
- 6:37Speaker 2: if we take Allen's skill players out of the game
- 6:40Speaker 2: by playing type man to man coverage and sort of
- 6:44Speaker 2: bait him into playing hero ball from the pocket, then
- 6:47Speaker 2: we have a much better chance than if we back
- 6:49Speaker 2: off and we play this off zone and we let
- 6:51Speaker 2: him pick us apart underneath. And that's what they went
- 6:54Speaker 2: out there and did, and I thought the defense really
- 6:56Speaker 2: executed the game plan flawlessly in the passing game. There
- 6:59Speaker 2: was obviously issues in the run game, but seventeen points
- 7:02Speaker 2: allowed in one hundred and fifty six passing yards for
- 7:05Speaker 2: Josh Allen. I'll take that any day of the week,
- 7:07Speaker 2: Like that's a game that you will absolutely take against
- 7:10Speaker 2: that quarterback.
- 7:11Speaker 4: Yeah, I think this is remember the uh is the
- 7:14Speaker 4: dress blue and black or white and gold? Remember that
- 7:18Speaker 4: thing from the internet. I think this game is kind
- 7:19Speaker 4: of that with the coaching and in reality it's both.
- 7:22Speaker 4: But everybody's gonna fall on one side of the street.
- 7:24Speaker 4: I agree with everything you said from the game plan side,
- 7:27Speaker 4: and this is we didn't disagree on it. We were
- 7:28Speaker 4: just focused on different things. I agree with you hundred
- 7:31Speaker 4: percent on.
- 7:31Speaker 2: The game plan side.
- 7:32Speaker 4: I thought they came in with a good plan offensively
- 7:34Speaker 4: and defensively. Offensively, as the game went on, it maybe didn't.
- 7:37Speaker 4: They didn't adapt as well as they could have. Defensively,
- 7:40Speaker 4: I think they did. It helped that the Bills just
- 7:43Speaker 4: refused to run the ball, which is hilarious. Let's not
- 7:45Speaker 4: give Sean McDermott too much credit here, But I thought
- 7:48Speaker 4: they came in with a good plan. I thought the
- 7:50Speaker 4: team looked prepared. The team came in with that energy.
- 7:52Speaker 4: The team came in ready to go, which coming off
- 7:54Speaker 4: that Cardinals game was night and day, so the preparation
- 7:57Speaker 4: the week leading up to it. I think the coaching
- 7:59Speaker 4: staff deserves a ton of credit for the plan they
- 8:01Speaker 4: put together. The flip side is the game management stuff
- 8:04Speaker 4: still needs work. Some of the punt non punt decisions.
- 8:08Speaker 4: I thought they missed a good shot at challenging a play,
- 8:12Speaker 4: some of the clock management that is still where there
- 8:17Speaker 4: is room to grow. And look, it's good to see
- 8:19Speaker 4: the game plan stuff, and I'm not discounting any of that.
- 8:22Speaker 4: I just think that it's weird because I thought the
- 8:25Speaker 4: most encouraging thing from this game was the coaching in
- 8:28Speaker 4: terms of the game plan. The least encouraging thing was
- 8:30Speaker 4: the coaching in terms of the end game management. So
- 8:33Speaker 4: kind of both sides of the street for them. The
- 8:35Speaker 4: game management stuff you can learn, you can get better at,
- 8:37Speaker 4: but there is room to grow there.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I think that's a fair take.
- 8:40Speaker 4: I just you just don't care about the game management stuff,
- 8:43Speaker 4: so you'll out the window.
- 8:44Speaker 2: I don't because I don't see you for this team
- 8:47Speaker 2: right now. I'm not sure what it matters, like the
- 8:50Speaker 2: most important thing for this team right but it's.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Not about right now. Again, it's about that projection. At
- 8:55Speaker 4: a certain point, they're gonna have to get better at that.
- 8:57Speaker 2: Yeah, but you can develop that skill.
- 8:59Speaker 4: I just it's the most important. You've seen them develop
- 9:02Speaker 4: it over the course of this year.
- 9:04Speaker 2: No, but the most important thing to me right now
- 9:06Speaker 2: is winning during the week, Like, can you win Monday
- 9:09Speaker 2: through Saturday?
- 9:09Speaker 4: I think the most important thing is winning on Sunday,
- 9:11Speaker 4: and you do that by winning during the week.
- 9:13Speaker 2: But yeah, you can't just say you do it.
- 9:15Speaker 4: I hate, Well, we had a good week of practice
- 9:17Speaker 4: and we lost so well, Like, no, there is ways
- 9:19Speaker 4: they can be better during the game too.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't disagree with that. I just I think
- 9:24Speaker 2: as a three win rebuilding operation, the most important thing
- 9:28Speaker 2: is proving that you can put together game plan, practice
- 9:31Speaker 2: it during the week, take it from the classroom to
- 9:33Speaker 2: the practice field to the game field, and go out
- 9:36Speaker 2: there and play a competitive product of football. Like if
- 9:38Speaker 2: you want to sit here and nitpick that they punted,
- 9:41Speaker 2: you know, the fourth down punt in the fourth quarter
- 9:43Speaker 2: that everybody's going crazy about, then sure, like I understand
- 9:46Speaker 2: that that's you know, it was not an aggressive decision, right,
- 9:50Speaker 2: that was for a lot of people. I would say
- 9:54Speaker 2: that decision to punt there was to keep the game close,
- 9:57Speaker 2: so that on the scoreboard, they weren't getting blown out
- 9:59Speaker 2: by seventeen points. And maybe that's true, but I just
- 10:03Speaker 2: again what I come back to with this coaching staff
- 10:06Speaker 2: is I am far more concerned with Monday through Saturday
- 10:11Speaker 2: with this team right now. Can you go out there
- 10:15Speaker 2: and know what you need to do? You know, it's
- 10:18Speaker 2: one of those things with Bill where he would you know,
- 10:20Speaker 2: always get up in front of the team and he
- 10:23Speaker 2: would have like three things, four things for us to
- 10:26Speaker 2: win this game. We absolutely need to check these four
- 10:29Speaker 2: boxes right. And I'm not talking about like the catch
- 10:32Speaker 2: alls like don't turn the ball over, and like those
- 10:35Speaker 2: are all every week. You don't want to turn the
- 10:36Speaker 2: ball over and you don't want to beat yourself. But
- 10:39Speaker 2: I'm talking more about you know, really minutia, exs and no's,
- 10:42Speaker 2: Like we are going to keep Josh Allen contained in
- 10:46Speaker 2: the pocket, and this is exactly how we're gonna do it.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Whether it's a four man rush, mush rush, or it's
- 10:52Speaker 2: a rush one guy gets to rush because we're gonna
- 10:55Speaker 2: funnel him out of the pocket this way, and then
- 10:57Speaker 2: we're gonna have a spy that's gonna close the pocket,
- 10:59Speaker 2: which is what they did a lot in this game
- 11:01Speaker 2: with Josh Allen was you know, using guys like Brandon
- 11:04Speaker 2: Schooler as a spy on the quarterback and then allowing
- 11:07Speaker 2: like one rusher to tee off right and the other
- 11:11Speaker 2: three guys their job or their responsibility was to try
- 11:15Speaker 2: to push him in a certain direction, and then Schooler
- 11:17Speaker 2: came wrapped around in that direction and sort of closed
- 11:20Speaker 2: the pocket. Like the coordination of that rush plan don't
- 11:24Speaker 2: look like to me with this pass rush, I know
- 11:27Speaker 2: a lot of people are making a big deal to
- 11:28Speaker 2: sort of out a key on Whitez, like let's slide
- 11:31Speaker 2: here that he hasn't been as productive, Like to me,
- 11:34Speaker 2: this is not this was not about that, Like you're
- 11:36Speaker 2: not grading this game looking at quarterback pressures in sack numbers.
- 11:40Speaker 2: Like to me, they went into this game defensively and
- 11:45Speaker 2: they said, we probably aren't gonna sack Josh Allen like
- 11:48Speaker 2: he's he's probably he's hard. He's hard enough to sack
- 11:51Speaker 2: as it is because of his mobility and his size.
- 11:53Speaker 2: They have a good offensive line, they get the ball
- 11:56Speaker 2: out quickly, and there's the nature of this offense. We're
- 11:59Speaker 2: not gonna necessarily get after Josh Allen in this game,
- 12:01Speaker 2: so we're just gonna try to contain them and keep
- 12:03Speaker 2: him in the pocket and make him meet us from
- 12:05Speaker 2: the pocket, and then we're gonna take the receivers out.
- 12:08Speaker 2: And they went out there and they did that offensively.
- 12:11Speaker 2: It was great to see some of the throws down
- 12:13Speaker 2: the field. It was great to see a couple of
- 12:15Speaker 2: design quarterback runs for Drake may So. Yeah, like, do
- 12:18Speaker 2: you want to you know, the punt, Like you didn't
- 12:20Speaker 2: like the punt? Okay, like what else?
- 12:22Speaker 5: Like?
- 12:22Speaker 2: I guess what else didn't you like about the game
- 12:24Speaker 2: management stuff? Specifically the punt I didn't love.
- 12:28Speaker 4: I would have challenged.
- 12:29Speaker 2: So the third.
- 12:30Speaker 4: Down, not on the fake punt, drive the drive before
- 12:36Speaker 4: second quarter incomplete, incomplete. Kendrick Bourne catches a comeback. He's
- 12:42Speaker 4: like in mid air when he catches the defender drives
- 12:44Speaker 4: him back. They marked him a full yard short, and
- 12:46Speaker 4: I know those players are tough to overturn, but it's
- 12:47Speaker 4: the first half out of challenge. I think there's a
- 12:50Speaker 4: chance he got it. Even if he didn't get it,
- 12:51Speaker 4: you're inches away. Maybe they're more inclined to go for it.
- 12:54Speaker 4: We know they had that fake punt I didn't love
- 12:58Speaker 4: just as a whole, and it burned them one time
- 13:00Speaker 4: burned them. So after the fake punt, they have to
- 13:03Speaker 4: call time out instead of taking delay because they didn't
- 13:05Speaker 4: get the special teams off and the offense on on time.
- 13:09Speaker 4: And it's the second week in row something like that's happened.
- 13:11Speaker 4: They had the twenty nine yard run form Antonio Gibson
- 13:14Speaker 4: last week and have to call time out immediately after
- 13:16Speaker 4: because they can't get the play in. And it's like,
- 13:18Speaker 4: when you have these big plays, you want to keep
- 13:21Speaker 4: the defense on their heels. You want to keep them
- 13:22Speaker 4: backed up, especially after a fake punt the defense comes
- 13:25Speaker 4: off the field, I think they're done. They're kind of
- 13:27Speaker 4: resetting now. They got all of a sudden run back on.
- 13:29Speaker 4: When you call time out, you sort of lose some
- 13:31Speaker 4: of that momentum. And there were other instances in the game.
- 13:33Speaker 4: That was the most glaring, but there were other instances
- 13:36Speaker 4: in the game where they're either calling timeouts or they're
- 13:38Speaker 4: getting to the line with six seven seconds on the
- 13:41Speaker 4: play clock, Like you can't.
- 13:42Speaker 2: Be doing that.
- 13:43Speaker 4: It was almost Mike McDaniel.
- 13:45Speaker 2: Esku so I you just had to take a shot
- 13:48Speaker 2: at me.
- 13:48Speaker 4: I mean, had that game in Buffalo, that playoff game,
- 13:51Speaker 4: was that was so bad? How does he not figure
- 13:53Speaker 4: out the entire game? Just called the play earlier and
- 13:56Speaker 4: it's anyway you got to be able to get the
- 13:58Speaker 4: play calls on time. Like this is basic operational stuff
- 14:01Speaker 4: that Do they win the game? I don't know, but
- 14:05Speaker 4: it will help them be competitive and it cuts down
- 14:08Speaker 4: on some of.
- 14:08Speaker 2: That margin forrer. I like, I don't know, do they
- 14:11Speaker 2: win the game? Maybe maybe not? Certainly the one after
- 14:14Speaker 2: the fake punt you get the defense really back on
- 14:16Speaker 2: their heels. That helps.
- 14:17Speaker 4: Instead they punt again three plays later, so the fake
- 14:20Speaker 4: he kind of burned for nothing.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Okay, I hear what you're saying. I agree with a
- 14:25Speaker 2: lot of what you're saying. I guess I just to me,
- 14:29Speaker 2: you know, the stuff that you're talking about is I
- 14:32Speaker 2: will be more concerned about that kind of stuff like
- 14:34Speaker 2: a year or two from now when they are actually
- 14:37Speaker 2: supposed to be competing.
- 14:38Speaker 4: Okay, but why can't why can't they work on the
- 14:40Speaker 4: during the week stuff and the in game stuff. Why
- 14:42Speaker 4: can't we be talking about both improving simultaneously. It's not like,
- 14:45Speaker 4: all right, we're good where we are during the week, Now,
- 14:47Speaker 4: let's figure out this game day stuff. That's not how
- 14:50Speaker 4: it should be they should be working on improving the
- 14:52Speaker 4: entire operation at once.
- 14:53Speaker 2: Because I don't think that that stuff that you're talking about.
- 14:57Speaker 2: If we had to like split up winning into like
- 15:00Speaker 2: a pie of like percentages, I think that your stuff
- 15:04Speaker 2: is probably about twenty to twenty five percent more, and
- 15:08Speaker 2: my stuff is seventy five.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Bits more than that, especially once you go up against
- 15:12Speaker 4: maybe in a game like that where they're so outmatched
- 15:14Speaker 4: talent wise, once the roster is more even, it's gonna
- 15:19Speaker 4: matter a lot more than that. We saw that here.
- 15:21Speaker 4: For years there were good teams that the Patriots would play.
- 15:23Speaker 2: The Patriots were beating teams before the team even got
- 15:27Speaker 2: off the bus like that. That's that's what it was.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Because they were more tightened up, and other teams would
- 15:32Speaker 4: get in a panic about playing the Patriots and they
- 15:35Speaker 4: would stumble over the details, the end game details. No,
- 15:38Speaker 4: I'm sorry, that's stuff. I'm not gonna let you say
- 15:39Speaker 4: that stuff doesn't decide football games. It absolutely does.
- 15:42Speaker 2: It decides a lot of one score games. I agree
- 15:44Speaker 2: with you, but I don't.
- 15:45Speaker 4: Necessarily most most games in the NFL at one score games.
- 15:48Speaker 2: I just don't think it matters as much as you do.
- 15:49Speaker 2: I don't. I don't. I think it matters. I think
- 15:52Speaker 2: it's a part of the game.
- 15:54Speaker 4: I'm not Shanahan and all the Super Bowl rings how
- 15:56Speaker 4: much it matters.
- 15:56Speaker 2: Oh, come on, man, he's been like two bounces from
- 15:58Speaker 2: the super Bowl, Like if he was a little better
- 16:02Speaker 2: on the market games, Jimmy hits Emmanuel decision was Jimmy
- 16:07Speaker 2: Garoppolo throw. So it's it's his problem, his fault that
- 16:10Speaker 2: he missed a wide open receiver for a decision.
- 16:14Speaker 4: You know what, Jimmy Garoppolo is dress It matters. It
- 16:19Speaker 4: absolutely decides games. And I'd rather them not wait to
- 16:23Speaker 4: get better at it.
- 16:24Speaker 2: I'm not asking them to wait to get better at it.
- 16:26Speaker 2: I just think that it's more important, especially coming off
- 16:29Speaker 2: a game like they play in Arizona, where I just
- 16:32Speaker 2: thought their entire approach was off. No, I mean even
- 16:35Speaker 2: much better. Even John Medison on Tuesday that their effort
- 16:39Speaker 2: in Arizona wasn't good.
- 16:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:40Speaker 4: No, And I'm giving them credit. They were much better
- 16:42Speaker 4: in that regard. But this stuff is part of the
- 16:44Speaker 4: game too. This stuff is part of coaching too. I
- 16:46Speaker 4: think it's as much of the game.
- 16:47Speaker 2: Day stuff.
- 16:48Speaker 4: To me, is as much a part you can come
- 16:49Speaker 4: in with a great plan. If you can't get play
- 16:52Speaker 4: calls in and you're committing bad penalties and you're burning
- 16:55Speaker 4: timeouts you don't need to burn, and letting the clock
- 16:57Speaker 4: run when it doesn't need to run, you're still gonna
- 16:59Speaker 4: even with a good plan, you're still going to have
- 17:01Speaker 4: a hard time winning games in this league because so
- 17:03Speaker 4: many of these games are so close.
- 17:05Speaker 2: All right, Well, we're not going to agree to this
- 17:07Speaker 2: on this one, so I'm gonna move it along. But
- 17:10Speaker 2: I do the one big thing that I definitely look
- 17:13Speaker 2: at now as we come off of this Bills game.
- 17:17Speaker 2: It's cool to do it once, and we're saying do
- 17:19Speaker 2: it once they even win the freaking game. It's cool
- 17:21Speaker 2: to come, you know and watch this film and feel
- 17:25Speaker 2: some pretty good about some of the things that they did,
- 17:28Speaker 2: you know, in terms of the past defense and the
- 17:30Speaker 2: start on offense. But the two you know kind of
- 17:33Speaker 2: things that come from this now one you got to
- 17:36Speaker 2: stack it right, like you gotta do it again against
- 17:38Speaker 2: the Chargers on Saturday. If they just if this is
- 17:40Speaker 2: just a one off performance by this group down the
- 17:43Speaker 2: stretch here and we don't see that team on Saturday
- 17:45Speaker 2: against the Chargers, I would throw it all out. I
- 17:48Speaker 2: would say all the flowers I gave you last week,
- 17:50Speaker 2: you just set them on fire, right, Like, I will
- 17:52Speaker 2: not care about this Bills game if they go out
- 17:55Speaker 2: and play like they did in Arizona on Saturday against
- 17:58Speaker 2: the Chargers. Now, if they play the same way they
- 18:00Speaker 2: didn't against Buffalo, and maybe you know, to your point,
- 18:03Speaker 2: some of those in game things go their way, or
- 18:05Speaker 2: they're clean those things up, or some of the bounces
- 18:07Speaker 2: just are better this week, and they actually win this
- 18:09Speaker 2: game against the Chargers, then I would feel like, Okay,
- 18:12Speaker 2: we're starting to stack here a little bit. Now. With
- 18:15Speaker 2: that being said, Week eighteen against the Bills, I'm throwing
- 18:18Speaker 2: out I don't think that game is gonna matter for Buffalo.
- 18:21Speaker 2: I wouldn't be surprised if we see Mitch Trubisky in
- 18:23Speaker 2: that game.
- 18:23Speaker 4: I'm not throwing that out because of what you just said.
- 18:27Speaker 4: Like you date, if they're not competitive against the Bill's team,
- 18:32Speaker 4: that's half assing it. That's a really bad sign.
- 18:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I agree with that. I just I guess I
- 18:38Speaker 2: don't know this is this goes into like a you know,
- 18:42Speaker 2: personnel level versus player level, Like the players aren't gonna
- 18:45Speaker 2: go out there and tank for the team. Right, They're
- 18:47Speaker 2: not gonna do that. But I do think that there's
- 18:49Speaker 2: an element in week eighteen of thinking about that. I do.
- 18:53Speaker 4: I think for no I again, the game management stuff,
- 18:58Speaker 4: the operational stuff, like you need to prove you can
- 19:00Speaker 4: be a tight operation, and it doesn't matter who the
- 19:03Speaker 4: opponent is.
- 19:04Speaker 2: Like, so you don't care that if they win a
- 19:06Speaker 2: meaningless game against the Bills in Week eighteen, they could
- 19:09Speaker 2: go from like the second overall pick to like the
- 19:11Speaker 2: eighth overall pick. I think winning is more important. You
- 19:13Speaker 2: think winning one game against mister Bisky is more important? Yep.
- 19:16Speaker 4: I think for the you don't want losing to become
- 19:20Speaker 4: habitual for the culture of it. They're also not going
- 19:22Speaker 4: to fall to eight. I think that if they lose,
- 19:24Speaker 4: like if they lose one of the next two, the
- 19:26Speaker 4: Charge are a good team. I don't think they can
- 19:27Speaker 4: fall past like six.
- 19:29Speaker 2: Well, there's but I don't know what all the tie
- 19:31Speaker 2: breakers are because we don't know, like this we're gonna have.
- 19:33Speaker 4: We're gonna have the tie breakers because their strength schedules
- 19:36Speaker 4: so blow everybody else's.
- 19:38Speaker 2: Well, there's a bunch of four win teams in three
- 19:42Speaker 2: win teams in the league. A bunch of them play
- 19:43Speaker 2: each other though, Okay, I mean even if it's two
- 19:47Speaker 2: to six or two to seven, I think that that.
- 19:48Speaker 2: I also on this draft especially, I think that's bad.
- 19:52Speaker 4: I'm a proponent of them trading down so you don't
- 19:54Speaker 4: get the Hall, but you still end up with the
- 19:55Speaker 4: same player. I don't know, I'd like to see them.
- 19:58Speaker 4: I don't think they're gonna tank.
- 20:00Speaker 2: Because they're not gonna purposely.
- 20:02Speaker 4: Right, And I just think that operational stuff, and I
- 20:05Speaker 4: think like ending the season on a high note is important.
- 20:09Speaker 4: I know, like what to do for the Jets last year,
- 20:10Speaker 4: but that's the Jets. Yeah, you know, like I think
- 20:13Speaker 4: ending the season on a high note is important. Yeah,
- 20:15Speaker 4: Jet winning one game was not gonna help the Jets.
- 20:16Speaker 4: The Jets are so far beyond one game.
- 20:19Speaker 2: Okay, So that's one. They gotta stack it together against
- 20:22Speaker 2: the Chargers. The second thing is we're we're still seeing
- 20:26Speaker 2: a lot of the same mistakes. And I know you
- 20:28Speaker 2: kind of already broke down the coaching at and that
- 20:31Speaker 2: this isn't necessarily not coaching, it's just in terms of
- 20:35Speaker 2: the execution. The run defense is still a major problem
- 20:38Speaker 2: with this team at this point, they're probably not going
- 20:41Speaker 2: to fix the run defense until next year and hopefully
- 20:43Speaker 2: you get a Christian Barmore, Juwan Bentley. You know, maybe
- 20:47Speaker 2: you draft a few guys to sign a few guys
- 20:49Speaker 2: on defense that are stouter against the run. Their run
- 20:53Speaker 2: defense is, in my mind, other than the offensive line,
- 20:57Speaker 2: the worst part of the team. And in terms of
- 21:00Speaker 2: like the offensive line, they're so talent depleted on the
- 21:05Speaker 2: offensive line that I almost feel more disappointed in the
- 21:08Speaker 2: run defense than I do in the line play because
- 21:11Speaker 2: you're not expecting much out of your starting tackles being
- 21:15Speaker 2: Trey Jacobs and Vederian low right, Like, you're just not
- 21:18Speaker 2: expecting that group to be great defensively. I still think
- 21:21Speaker 2: they have enough good players on defense to not be
- 21:25Speaker 2: a horrible run defense, and at times they are a
- 21:29Speaker 2: horrible run defense. And it's the big plays, it's the
- 21:32Speaker 2: forty six yard touchdown by James Cook, but it's also
- 21:35Speaker 2: these little runs where you know, this game, they missed
- 21:39Speaker 2: eight tackles against the run. Four of them I counted
- 21:42Speaker 2: could have been TFLs, and they're just they're missing these
- 21:45Speaker 2: tackles and not only could they have been TFLs, but
- 21:47Speaker 2: then they don't rally to the football, so like the
- 21:50Speaker 2: ball carrier ends up squeaking out for four or five yards.
- 21:53Speaker 2: It's not even just that they missed the play behind
- 21:56Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage. They then don't make the play
- 21:58Speaker 2: at the line of scrimmage either, like you see other
- 22:01Speaker 2: teams when they play the run. It's okay, we whiffed
- 22:03Speaker 2: on a TfL, but then we have three hats that
- 22:06Speaker 2: are just like flying to the ball. So no, we
- 22:08Speaker 2: didn't get the two yard loss, but we got a
- 22:10Speaker 2: no gain out of this play because somebody contacted the
- 22:13Speaker 2: ball behind the line of scrimmage and slowed the ball down.
- 22:16Speaker 2: With the Patriots, they can slow the ball down behind
- 22:19Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage and then the guy still gains
- 22:21Speaker 2: five yards, and those body blows just add up over
- 22:24Speaker 2: the course of time. That to me has been the
- 22:27Speaker 2: most disappointing part about their run defense. Maybe the physical
- 22:30Speaker 2: at the point of attack and that type of stuff
- 22:32Speaker 2: is personnel, uh, But in terms of like their just
- 22:36Speaker 2: effort and the fact that they just don't rally or
- 22:39Speaker 2: bring hats to the football consistently, uh to to bottle
- 22:43Speaker 2: up runners, yea, it's a lot of one on one
- 22:47Speaker 2: in space, Like if that guy doesn't make the tackle,
- 22:49Speaker 2: then nobody might make the tackle any sort of thing.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Uh that It's been probably the most frustrating part of
- 22:55Speaker 2: the team for me personally to watch on film every
- 22:57Speaker 2: Monday is their fits, their their their inability to play blocks,
- 23:02Speaker 2: their angles, and like their ability to leverage or you know,
- 23:06Speaker 2: push runners back into the teeth of the defense, to
- 23:09Speaker 2: the numbers of the defense. They just do not play fundamentally, just.
- 23:12Speaker 4: The tackling, just the number of times that even when
- 23:15Speaker 4: they are in the right place at the right time,
- 23:16Speaker 4: they can't bring the guy down. A lot of run
- 23:19Speaker 4: You probably hate this. I don't know how you feel
- 23:21Speaker 4: about this cliche. I do believe in it to an extent.
- 23:23Speaker 4: A lot of run defenses just want to It's just effort. No,
- 23:27Speaker 4: it would just being bigger, meaner, stronger than the guy
- 23:31Speaker 4: opposite you who wants it more. And when you can't
- 23:34Speaker 4: stop the run, it kind of reflects that way. Also,
- 23:36Speaker 4: just backtrack real quick, because I see the chat is
- 23:38Speaker 4: pissed to make. I'm not saying that, oh, the Patriots
- 23:42Speaker 4: help their draft stock by winning that last game. I'm saying,
- 23:44Speaker 4: don't expect anybody in that building to say no, we
- 23:48Speaker 4: need to go out and lose for the draft. I'm
- 23:50Speaker 4: saying internally, they are not looked. They should not be
- 23:53Speaker 4: looking at that as we want to lose this game
- 23:55Speaker 4: for the draft. They should be wanting to pull out
- 23:57Speaker 4: every win they can. Obviously, yes, it's better for the
- 23:59Speaker 4: draft positioning if they lose. I ideally, you play a close,
- 24:03Speaker 4: competitive game and you lose, so you still have something
- 24:05Speaker 4: to build on. But people are saying, I just want
- 24:08Speaker 4: to be clear, I'm not saying it's better for them
- 24:10Speaker 4: in the draft if they win that game. It's obviously not.
- 24:12Speaker 4: I just don't expect them to. They're not gonna be
- 24:15Speaker 4: going into that game thinking about the draft. Norse should
- 24:17Speaker 4: they they're at the.
- 24:20Speaker 2: Yeah, and you know, yeah exactly. Just to clear that up.
- 24:24Speaker 2: I love it when the check gets on you, though,
- 24:26Speaker 2: I do like it. But yeah, I'm not suggesting that
- 24:31Speaker 2: they're going to go out there and take by any
- 24:33Speaker 2: means like, that's not That's not what any team. I
- 24:35Speaker 2: truly believe, that's not what any team does. Now. Executives
- 24:39Speaker 2: and did owners maybe from.
- 24:41Speaker 4: The GM level up.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and and that's it. It's not an individual game. Hey,
- 24:46Speaker 2: we need to go lose this thing.
- 24:47Speaker 4: It's the hey, like, we're not going to invest a
- 24:50Speaker 4: ton in this roster because we need to reset. We
- 24:51Speaker 4: need the draft picks, we need to reset the cap,
- 24:54Speaker 4: like we're.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Going to go into this season. You don't get, don't
- 24:58Speaker 2: You don't get.
- 24:58Speaker 4: Maybe at the trade deadline you decide like, hey, we're
- 25:00Speaker 4: going to sell off guys. That's more so in other
- 25:02Speaker 4: sports than football. You don't get to Week eighteen and.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Say we need to lose this game. Lose this Get's
- 25:07Speaker 2: not how it works. Yeah, No, I just I think
- 25:10Speaker 2: about the draft pick because I don't coach or play
- 25:12Speaker 2: in the game. So I'm going to consider and.
- 25:14Speaker 4: Look who you're talking to about, don't think of the
- 25:16Speaker 4: draft pick. Right that Jets game last year, I was
- 25:18Speaker 4: up there. I'm picturing Drake May the whole time. I'm
- 25:21Speaker 4: not gonna lie.
- 25:21Speaker 2: Yeah, So the other element of this Bills game just
- 25:25Speaker 2: to go back there and then we'll do three up,
- 25:27Speaker 2: three down. I know everybody wants us to talk off season,
- 25:29Speaker 2: so we'll get to in the second. But the other
- 25:33Speaker 2: element of this game that I have found myself being
- 25:38Speaker 2: like lowercase C concerned about, is there. I used this
- 25:43Speaker 2: take earlier for the Celtics lowercase c' I'm not big
- 25:47Speaker 2: C yet, Like I'm not like really worried about it yet.
- 25:50Speaker 4: But I'm just this take or the Celtics has nothing
- 25:53Speaker 4: to do with Celtics lower case W or upper case W.
- 25:55Speaker 4: Worried about Celtics lowercase like the smallest case me too.
- 25:59Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 26:00Speaker 2: In terms of the Patriots though back to the show,
- 26:05Speaker 2: this is a lowercase W worried about Drake May in
- 26:11Speaker 2: the red zone and just their red zone offense in general. Now,
- 26:16Speaker 2: the Drake May in the red zone angle probably improves
- 26:19Speaker 2: when he has better supporting cast, right, like that, that
- 26:23Speaker 2: element of it, I will totally allow for the The
- 26:28Speaker 2: The concern that I have with it is two things. One,
- 26:32Speaker 2: there was some of this at North Carolina. They had
- 26:35Speaker 2: some issues finishing drives at North Carolina too, And he
- 26:39Speaker 2: had some issues with blit zero turnovers in the red
- 26:44Speaker 2: zone like that kind of stuff. So this is probably
- 26:48Speaker 2: in reality the more important development for him. Then. Like
- 26:53Speaker 2: people making the big deal out of the footwork and
- 26:55Speaker 2: like all that stuff, I thought I always thought, you
- 26:58Speaker 2: know that, I always thought that was kind of way overblown.
- 27:02Speaker 2: This type of stuff, though I don't think is as
- 27:04Speaker 2: overblown with him in college to the pros. And it
- 27:09Speaker 2: doesn't help that he doesn't have the most creative play caller.
- 27:13Speaker 2: When you get down there, you need to be creative.
- 27:15Speaker 2: I'm not talking about like double passes and stuff. I'm
- 27:17Speaker 2: just talking about scheme and motion and stretching the field
- 27:21Speaker 2: horizontally and knowing how to use the space of the
- 27:23Speaker 2: field and all that kind of stuff. But you also
- 27:26Speaker 2: have to look at it and you know, it took
- 27:29Speaker 2: them ten plays to score from the eight yard line
- 27:33Speaker 2: at the end of the game, and the Bills are
- 27:36Speaker 2: just sending the house and they just can't get a
- 27:40Speaker 2: cover zero beater. Now he had one on the play
- 27:44Speaker 2: that he dropped the snap, which was the one time
- 27:48Speaker 2: where I thought that he was a little shaky in
- 27:50Speaker 2: this game. And so you have that situation at the
- 27:53Speaker 2: end of the game where if they score before the
- 27:56Speaker 2: two minute warning, like now they're they're in business with
- 27:59Speaker 2: three timeouts and the two minute warning down by three,
- 28:02Speaker 2: at least, you're putting the Bills in a position where
- 28:04Speaker 2: they have to put a drive together to close out
- 28:06Speaker 2: the game. And it's not just one first down and
- 28:09Speaker 2: the game is over. The interception I don't. There's a
- 28:13Speaker 2: lot of fault on that interception. The route combination obviously,
- 28:18Speaker 2: you know, Kendrick Bourne and Austin Hooper like that. It
- 28:22Speaker 2: was an ugly route combination in terms of the execution
- 28:27Speaker 2: on that play. Don't mind. The route combination is actually,
- 28:29Speaker 2: you know, scissors is actually a pretty good red zone
- 28:31Speaker 2: high red zone play that a lot of teams run,
- 28:34Speaker 2: but it just wasn't executed great. But the thing that
- 28:37Speaker 2: I see with Drake in the red zone is that
- 28:39Speaker 2: he's a big like anticipatory thrower, and he likes to
- 28:44Speaker 2: see the space in the defense, right like, here are
- 28:46Speaker 2: the voids in what I'm looking at, and I'm just
- 28:49Speaker 2: gonna anticipate that Austin Hooper is going to run into
- 28:54Speaker 2: this void. But the problem is is that a lot
- 28:57Speaker 2: of things have to go right then from the time
- 29:00Speaker 2: he releases the ball to the time that the ball
- 29:03Speaker 2: arrives at the target, you know, like the routes hitting correctly,
- 29:06Speaker 2: like Austin Hooper reading the play the same way that
- 29:09Speaker 2: he reads the play, and in the open field between
- 29:12Speaker 2: the twenties, those types of throws, if he makes that
- 29:15Speaker 2: exact same throw, that might just be an incomplete pass.
- 29:18Speaker 2: But because the space is so condensed in the red zone,
- 29:20Speaker 2: that middle of the field safety, it's a pretty it's
- 29:23Speaker 2: an easier play for him to get to the sideline
- 29:25Speaker 2: there and make that play. So it's a lowercase W
- 29:30Speaker 2: like I'm not I'm not trying to be panicky or
- 29:32Speaker 2: anything about it just yet. But they've struggled in the
- 29:36Speaker 2: red zone all's a year long. But also with Drake
- 29:39Speaker 2: at quarterback, it's probably the one area where they haven't
- 29:42Speaker 2: shown real improvement with Drake. Like everything else is up,
- 29:45Speaker 2: like yards points, everything else is up with Drake at quarterback,
- 29:49Speaker 2: but the one thing that isn't is their red zone efficiency.
- 29:52Speaker 4: Yeah, I think just talent will fix some of that.
- 29:55Speaker 4: He'll have more time there. I agree, that's not just
- 29:57Speaker 4: a Drake may thing. A lot of young quarterbacks like
- 29:59Speaker 4: the red zone is kind of one of the last
- 30:01Speaker 4: things to come. Having a better run game would be
- 30:03Speaker 4: a big way to help him. But if you remember,
- 30:05Speaker 4: remember I take after the Titans game on Drake May Like,
- 30:08Speaker 4: he plays with an inner dialogue of fine, I'll do
- 30:10Speaker 4: it myself. Yeah, I guess I'll have to do it myself.
- 30:13Speaker 4: He's been better about that the last few weeks. Except
- 30:16Speaker 4: in the red zone, and he even said after the
- 30:18Speaker 4: game you could tell he's frustrated. He said, yeah, you know,
- 30:20Speaker 4: a lot of time, the red zone ultimately comes back
- 30:22Speaker 4: to the quarterback. I've got to be better, And yes,
- 30:24Speaker 4: he can be better in the red zone. But I
- 30:26Speaker 4: do feel like he there is room for him to
- 30:29Speaker 4: trust others to make plays down there. And I get
- 30:31Speaker 4: why maybe he doesn't based on the way this year
- 30:34Speaker 4: is gone. But when you get we'll do offseason.
- 30:36Speaker 2: Ono.
- 30:37Speaker 4: Do you hear the clip on the Athletic Football podcast
- 30:40Speaker 4: this week about a certain receiver that we've talked about
- 30:42Speaker 4: on the show. We'll get to that. When you get him,
- 30:44Speaker 4: a guy like that, I think things will start to
- 30:46Speaker 4: open up for him.
- 30:47Speaker 2: There's a lot of things that are personnel driven in
- 30:50Speaker 2: this offense, and like I said, I when it comes
- 30:53Speaker 2: to red zone, especially Van Pelt shares in a lot
- 30:57Speaker 2: of the blame. And it took him. Of course, it
- 30:59Speaker 2: took until week seventeen for them to run Drake in
- 31:03Speaker 2: the red zone like that's not his fault, that's what
- 31:06Speaker 2: they're calling for him to run. And I think one
- 31:08Speaker 2: of the elements you know with Van Pelt that I've
- 31:11Speaker 2: had you know, criticisms of with the red zone stuff
- 31:14Speaker 2: is that a lot of it is progression based reads
- 31:17Speaker 2: for Drake in a condensed area where things happen a
- 31:21Speaker 2: lot faster down there. And like you said, young quarterbacks,
- 31:26Speaker 2: this tends to be the last frontier for young quarterbacks
- 31:29Speaker 2: is throwing in the red zone. So you know, you
- 31:31Speaker 2: have a young quarterback that isn't you know, exactly there
- 31:35Speaker 2: yet in terms of the red zone, and instead of
- 31:38Speaker 2: running you know, some read options, some RPO, you know,
- 31:41Speaker 2: some more creative type play calls to just sort of
- 31:46Speaker 2: take him out of dropback mode, right, Like that's what
- 31:48Speaker 2: I see the most of is like you're asking him
- 31:51Speaker 2: to drop back pass all the time. Yeah, you know,
- 31:54Speaker 2: and if you were willing to run the quarterback a
- 31:57Speaker 2: little bit, you know, great red zone plays like for Philly,
- 32:00Speaker 2: like their quarterback draw play out of empty is one
- 32:03Speaker 2: of their dynamite red zone plays, right you just empty
- 32:06Speaker 2: the backfield. You usually get five in the box against
- 32:09Speaker 2: five blockers and Jalen Hurts just runs the ball down there.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Like those are the types of things that if they
- 32:15Speaker 2: were doing more of those things, then he wouldn't have
- 32:18Speaker 2: to always try to throw the ball into the end
- 32:20Speaker 2: zone from a drop back situation and they just don't
- 32:23Speaker 2: do those types of things. So that that's been frustrating
- 32:26Speaker 2: to me from a red zone perspective is they should
- 32:30Speaker 2: be finishing more of these drives. I mean, what was
- 32:32Speaker 2: it. It was the Colts game that they were two for
- 32:34Speaker 2: six in the red zone I believe it was. And
- 32:37Speaker 2: then you know this game were the Cardinals game either, Yeah,
- 32:40Speaker 2: this game it's been tough too, you know with the Bills.
- 32:42Speaker 2: So those would be my two biggest nippicks. You know,
- 32:45Speaker 2: obviously there's individual players, which we'll get to now with
- 32:48Speaker 2: three up, three down, But in terms of conceptually run defense,
- 32:52Speaker 2: I think at this point is what it is and
- 32:54Speaker 2: that's the next season problem. I would like to see
- 32:56Speaker 2: them be a little bit more buttoned up in the
- 32:59Speaker 2: red zone in these last two games, like can you
- 33:01Speaker 2: get some stuff that makes you feel better about how
- 33:03Speaker 2: they look down in the red area, And it's it's
- 33:06Speaker 2: a big part of Alex Van Pelts evaluation for me,
- 33:08Speaker 2: because they're down in red zone that that's where that's
- 33:11Speaker 2: where coordinators make their mind.
- 33:13Speaker 4: We'll say this though, you know who the best red
- 33:15Speaker 4: zone defense is in the NFL. The Chargers, Los Angeles
- 33:18Speaker 4: Chargers for touchdowns.
- 33:20Speaker 2: Yeah, big reason why. Then we'll talk a little Chargers.
- 33:23Speaker 2: The big reason why they're really good in the red
- 33:25Speaker 2: zone their defensive.
- 33:27Speaker 4: Tous Edwards just ruled out JK.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Dobbins question. Okay, I think we should get the Patriots
- 33:33Speaker 2: then shortly. The big thing, the big reason why they're
- 33:37Speaker 2: they're a really good red zone defense, Jesse mint Or
- 33:40Speaker 2: their defensive coordinator is really really good at keying on
- 33:44Speaker 2: your tendencies on early downs and putting you in long
- 33:46Speaker 2: down and distance. So if you get into the red
- 33:49Speaker 2: zone and he kind of knows what you're gonna do
- 33:51Speaker 2: on first and second down, and now you're in third
- 33:54Speaker 2: and pass in the red zone all the time. That's
- 33:55Speaker 2: that's a tough way to live, Like, you don't want
- 33:57Speaker 2: to live in third and pass. And I think the
- 33:59Speaker 2: Patriots get into those situations a lot, where they're in
- 34:02Speaker 2: laid down passing situations from like the low red area,
- 34:06Speaker 2: which is a really tough place to be. I mean,
- 34:08Speaker 2: we saw that against Buffalo, just setting everybody and putting
- 34:12Speaker 2: them in tough spots in there, that situation and that
- 34:15Speaker 2: drive how many I think it was three defensive pass
- 34:17Speaker 2: interferences that extended that drive, so they the Patriots need
- 34:21Speaker 2: to clean that up. Let's do three up, three down.
- 34:23Speaker 2: We'll talk a little chargers and a little draft as always,
- 34:26Speaker 2: but do you want to start us off on three up,
- 34:28Speaker 2: three down? You prepared this week? I am prepared because
- 34:30Speaker 2: already this sweet Well it's funny because we kind of
- 34:32Speaker 2: just did the same show you did on Tuesday, Sports Like, Yeah, anyways,
- 34:37Speaker 2: so I I'll do this a little different because that
- 34:38Speaker 2: one had to be three up, three down, actually a
- 34:40Speaker 2: two up, five down. Oh wow, five down you're critical, Yeah.
- 34:44Speaker 4: A little bit one of them you might have a
- 34:46Speaker 4: problem with.
- 34:47Speaker 2: But oh boy. Uh.
- 34:49Speaker 4: First up, Christian Ellis, who I feel like has been
- 34:52Speaker 4: on here weekly for me.
- 34:54Speaker 2: You have him as a up. I have him as
- 34:55Speaker 2: a up. You have miss down. No, I just don't.
- 34:57Speaker 2: I didn't think about him.
- 34:58Speaker 4: I thought that he made one good play in space
- 35:01Speaker 4: early in the game, good tackle in space. He had
- 35:04Speaker 4: the pass break up. I mean, for what it was,
- 35:06Speaker 4: the ball hit off the back of his helmet, but
- 35:07Speaker 4: he was right there in coverage.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 35:09Speaker 4: A couple other plays where I thought he was in
- 35:12Speaker 4: the right spot defending the run. They were maybe bigger
- 35:14Speaker 4: run plays because there were other holes for the back
- 35:17Speaker 4: to find secondary holes. But and this maybe says more
- 35:21Speaker 4: about the Patriots current roster than it does about Christianellis.
- 35:25Speaker 2: He's just been steady. He's been I.
- 35:28Speaker 4: Don't know how many plays he's like gone out and
- 35:30Speaker 4: made right creative might play he's created. But there haven't
- 35:34Speaker 4: really been a ton of instances where he's doing the
- 35:35Speaker 4: wrong thing either. He just always seems to be in
- 35:37Speaker 4: the right place, right time, makes the plays that are
- 35:40Speaker 4: there to be made. And especially on defense this year,
- 35:43Speaker 4: there's not that many guys you can say that about
- 35:45Speaker 4: on this team. Like if we were to talk about
- 35:48Speaker 4: just output for this season, Christian Elli's top fifteen player
- 35:52Speaker 4: on the team, top ten.
- 35:54Speaker 2: Like says a lot.
- 35:56Speaker 4: And again I acknowledge this maybe says more about the
- 35:58Speaker 4: Rosson does about Ellis. Yeah, who's been more impressive this
- 36:01Speaker 4: year Christian Ellis, Kyle.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Loger, Yeah. I mean, look, I think with Ellis, the
- 36:05Speaker 2: biggest thing that I see is that he has a role.
- 36:07Speaker 2: You know, he's gonna I think he has a role
- 36:09Speaker 2: on an NFL roster as a passing downs linebacker. Yeah,
- 36:13Speaker 2: I do. Now they have to use him a little
- 36:15Speaker 2: bit more on early downs than he's probably built for.
- 36:17Speaker 4: But even when he's in those situations, again, he hasn't
- 36:19Speaker 4: been great, but he hasn't been I don't really seem
- 36:22Speaker 4: getting exposed.
- 36:23Speaker 2: He just can't get off blocks in the running game.
- 36:25Speaker 2: He's just too small, right, And some of that's you know,
- 36:28Speaker 2: we've talked about this in the past of the run defense.
- 36:30Speaker 2: I don't love how they play the run with this
- 36:32Speaker 2: personnel because they're still trying to two gap and they're
- 36:35Speaker 2: still trying to get their linebackers to take on blockers
- 36:38Speaker 2: and things like that. And Christian Ellis is what two
- 36:41Speaker 2: hundred and thirty two hundred and thirty five pounds. Yeah,
- 36:43Speaker 2: see only Taki Taki another guy who's a smaller guy
- 36:46Speaker 2: that's more gonna win with athleticism and smarts than he
- 36:49Speaker 2: is with physicality. So I don't necessarily put it on
- 36:53Speaker 2: Ellis that they're asking Ellis to stand over the bubble
- 36:56Speaker 2: and then take on a guard, you know, at the
- 36:58Speaker 2: point of attack. Like, that's not Christian Ellis problem. That's
- 37:01Speaker 2: a DeMarcus Covington and girod Meo problem.
- 37:03Speaker 4: So no, I think he had another solid game, and
- 37:06Speaker 4: I think he's had a solid year.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, fair enough. My first up was Jonathan Jones. Yeah.
- 37:12Speaker 2: I thought Jonathan Jones was fantastic in this game, the
- 37:15Speaker 2: best game of the year, best game I've seen him
- 37:17Speaker 2: play in quite a bit. Look, clear, Shakir is now
- 37:20Speaker 2: the Bills engine of that offense. He's the straw that
- 37:23Speaker 2: stirs the drink. It's very Edelman esque, I would say,
- 37:26Speaker 2: in terms of how they run that offense through him
- 37:29Speaker 2: in the slot. Jonathan Jones on a twelve routes in
- 37:33Speaker 2: man to man coverage against Khalil Shaker allowed one catch.
- 37:37Speaker 2: It was that little drag route over the middle of
- 37:39Speaker 2: the field in the second half, one catch in twelve yards.
- 37:42Speaker 2: And guess what on that one catch, he forced a
- 37:44Speaker 2: fumble on the one catch that he allows. Yeah, peanut punch.
- 37:48Speaker 2: So even though he gave up a catch, he still
- 37:50Speaker 2: made a play on the ball. On that play he
- 37:52Speaker 2: had to pass breakup in the end zone, which was
- 37:54Speaker 2: just perfect trail coverage, trail man coverage. I just thought
- 37:57Speaker 2: he was all over Khalil Shakir in this game. And
- 38:00Speaker 2: maybe the most the most sort of just stamp of
- 38:05Speaker 2: this game plan against Buffalo was how well prepared they
- 38:08Speaker 2: were for Shakir and his route tree. It really seemed
- 38:11Speaker 2: like Jonathan Jones knew the route that Shakira was gonna
- 38:14Speaker 2: run before he ran it. Kudos to him for his
- 38:17Speaker 2: preparation on Shakir, but I also would imagine that that
- 38:20Speaker 2: had a lot to do with what the coaches in
- 38:22Speaker 2: the game plan was as well. So they recognized, you know,
- 38:25Speaker 2: Shakier is an inbreaking route runner. He's gonna run crossers,
- 38:28Speaker 2: he's gonna run slants, he's gonna run things over the
- 38:31Speaker 2: middle of the field. So they just put Jonathan Jones
- 38:34Speaker 2: and an inside trail technique and had him just shadow
- 38:37Speaker 2: him across the field and then they would put his
- 38:39Speaker 2: safety up over the top of him so that if
- 38:40Speaker 2: they went deep, he would have that safety help over
- 38:43Speaker 2: the top. And he was just in his shirt all
- 38:46Speaker 2: day long. I mean, really great coverage, Jonathan Jones. Yeah, absolutely,
- 38:52Speaker 2: Nell Johns, you only had two. Really, I would have put.
- 38:55Speaker 4: Drake May, but he threw the pick and I didn't
- 38:57Speaker 4: love him dropping the ball on that snap in the red.
- 39:00Speaker 2: I was like, I considered Drake May.
- 39:03Speaker 4: He was like close to up but not up.
- 39:06Speaker 2: So the sticky thing about Drake and I'm with you,
- 39:09Speaker 2: I considered it because the tough thing about him is
- 39:12Speaker 2: that it feels like they wouldn't be in these games.
- 39:14Speaker 2: It wasn't for him, but they also feels like he's
- 39:16Speaker 2: making some critical errors, so it's hard to put him
- 39:18Speaker 2: on the ups. But like the same time, you have
- 39:21Speaker 2: to recognize he's the most valuable player on the team.
- 39:23Speaker 4: So this is where I was at with Drake basically
- 39:25Speaker 4: in this game, and we didn't talk about this in
- 39:27Speaker 4: the open. I wanted to talk about this, yet we're
- 39:28Speaker 4: getting to it. And I said this with Greg on Tuesday.
- 39:32Speaker 4: Just for him to go into that environment, both handling
- 39:35Speaker 4: the coldest game in his career Buffalo, It's loud, it
- 39:39Speaker 4: was kind of later in the day, just all those
- 39:41Speaker 4: like that was a big game environment. It obviously wasn't
- 39:44Speaker 4: a big game for the Patriots at at three and eleven,
- 39:47Speaker 4: but that was a big game environment, and you don't
- 39:50Speaker 4: know how these guys are gonna handle it, especially a
- 39:51Speaker 4: guy that was in the ACC. We're seeing the college
- 39:53Speaker 4: football playoff right now, like what these kids look like
- 39:56Speaker 4: when they go into a real road playoff game. R
- 39:58Speaker 4: I think that's a big reason the games are lopsided
- 40:00Speaker 4: last week. So you don't know what he's gonna look like.
- 40:04Speaker 4: And he went in there and he like they showed
- 40:05Speaker 4: him on TV earlier.
- 40:06Speaker 2: I thought he looks cold.
- 40:08Speaker 4: Yeah, he looks but it it may have bothered him,
- 40:13Speaker 4: but it didn't impact him, and that's really all that matters.
- 40:17Speaker 4: In the noise, like the play some of the play
- 40:19Speaker 4: calls gotten late, but there were also times he was
- 40:21Speaker 4: able to handle it and make it work and things
- 40:23Speaker 4: like that. If we're talking about the long term five
- 40:27Speaker 4: to ten year window, that game was incredibly encouraging for
- 40:31Speaker 4: Drake May because, look, the games are gonna get bigger
- 40:33Speaker 4: and we'll see but as much of a big game
- 40:35Speaker 4: environment as he's had in the NFL, that was a
- 40:37Speaker 4: pretty legit environment. He handled it well. So you have
- 40:40Speaker 4: a quarterback that can go into that environment and handle it.
- 40:43Speaker 4: Five ten year window, great game for Drake May. If
- 40:46Speaker 4: we are just talking about who played the best technical
- 40:49Speaker 4: football game on Sunday, he's not towards the top of
- 40:53Speaker 4: the list because he had his issues. But for a
- 40:56Speaker 4: rookie in that spot, the issues he had you live
- 41:00Speaker 4: with and you say, okay, overall he did. He did
- 41:02Speaker 4: what he needed to do in this game for what
- 41:04Speaker 4: this game was.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a great point, and I believe it was.
- 41:09Speaker 2: Van Pelt right then mentioned that it was good for
- 41:11Speaker 2: the younger players. Yeah, he talked about that today, to
- 41:14Speaker 2: play in Buffalo for the first time and get that
- 41:16Speaker 2: first game under their belt. And I agree. And in
- 41:19Speaker 2: some ways, you know, granted, they they're going to have
- 41:22Speaker 2: to do it when the stakes are higher and that's
- 41:23Speaker 2: gonna be a different kind of pressure. But to have
- 41:25Speaker 2: it be sort of a low pressure situation for the
- 41:28Speaker 2: first time.
- 41:29Speaker 4: Low pressure of a high pressure pressure situation, as you
- 41:32Speaker 4: can get it.
- 41:32Speaker 2: Wasn't maybe the worst thing in the world that it
- 41:34Speaker 2: wasn't a game that they had to win for a
- 41:36Speaker 2: playoff seed or something like that.
- 41:38Speaker 4: That's a valuable game for young team and the coaches too,
- 41:41Speaker 4: nuts players coaches, Yeah, that's a valuable game for a
- 41:44Speaker 4: young team. In the fact that was as close as
- 41:45Speaker 4: it was is a So this and this goes back
- 41:48Speaker 4: to what we set off the top. You're talking about
- 41:49Speaker 4: the game playing stuff now the handle it. I'm talking
- 41:51Speaker 4: about the end game. Yeah, like five ten year projection.
- 41:54Speaker 4: You feel really good about that game. You feel better
- 41:57Speaker 4: about that game in the five ten year window than
- 41:59Speaker 4: you do the actual football product we saw on Sunday,
- 42:02Speaker 4: which is not necessarily a bad thing for where this
- 42:03Speaker 4: team is at.
- 42:04Speaker 2: Yeah, I would just say the other thing with Drake
- 42:06Speaker 2: May the reason why I you know, look, he made
- 42:09Speaker 2: some fantastic throws in this game. Obviously, the touchdown to
- 42:12Speaker 2: Booty is just that that's an unbelievab beautiful throw.
- 42:15Speaker 4: He had one to Hunter Henry two on third down
- 42:17Speaker 4: on an out that he threw before Henry got out
- 42:19Speaker 4: of the break. That was like, that's an NFL That's
- 42:22Speaker 4: an NFL third down throw right there.
- 42:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah, No, I mean he made he made several
- 42:26Speaker 2: great plays in this game. But the the reason why
- 42:29Speaker 2: I didn't go put him on the ups. Yeah, this
- 42:32Speaker 2: game felt a little North Carolina eat to me in
- 42:34Speaker 2: terms of his performance, where there's five or six throws
- 42:38Speaker 2: that he made in this game that make your jaw drop,
- 42:41Speaker 2: But then there was also the turnovers and some you know,
- 42:43Speaker 2: real critical miscuse.
- 42:45Speaker 4: Looked more Josh Allen than Josh Allen did in this game.
- 42:48Speaker 4: You're gonna hate me saying that, but yeah, it's or
- 42:51Speaker 4: do you agree? Uh, he looked more like Josh Allen
- 42:54Speaker 4: than Josh Josh Allen looked Timid.
- 42:57Speaker 2: He We'll get to Josh Allen in a second. I
- 43:00Speaker 2: would just say that, I mean the spin move on
- 43:02Speaker 2: the first down run, that's Josh Allen. Yeah. I would
- 43:05Speaker 2: just say that if you're if you you could see
- 43:08Speaker 2: this game with Drake May anyway you want to see it,
- 43:11Speaker 2: you could watch this game and you could say, look
- 43:13Speaker 2: at this throw. You know, the throw he made to
- 43:15Speaker 2: Booty over the middle of the field, you know, when
- 43:17Speaker 2: the blitz came and they had to abort the play
- 43:19Speaker 2: action fake and he just rolls out and uh, you
- 43:21Speaker 2: know with his body weight, you know, flying right, he
- 43:25Speaker 2: throws back into the middle of the field left. Like
- 43:27Speaker 2: that throw is crazy. That's a crazy Josh Allen, Patrick
- 43:32Speaker 2: Mahomes like unreal throw. Right, the touchdown to Booty is
- 43:36Speaker 2: a great throw. Some of the third down throws that
- 43:38Speaker 2: you mentioned, you know, Crosser to Hunter Henry early on
- 43:41Speaker 2: in the game opening drive, scrambles for another first down
- 43:44Speaker 2: when there was nobody open. I like those types of
- 43:46Speaker 2: players are him adding to the to the situation, like
- 43:50Speaker 2: he's elevating the product, like Kaishan Boody no offense, But
- 43:53Speaker 2: like that's not He's not Randy Moss right and he
- 43:57Speaker 2: made such a perfect throw on the touchdown to Kaishan
- 44:00Speaker 2: Boody that Kashan Budy had no choice but to catch
- 44:02Speaker 2: it right. It was literally it was literally right in
- 44:05Speaker 2: his hands, like there is no way he was gonna
- 44:07Speaker 2: not come away with the football. The other thing I
- 44:10Speaker 2: would say about Drake May that almost put him on
- 44:12Speaker 2: the ups for me. I don't know about you, but
- 44:14Speaker 2: I had some people from Buffalo reach out to me
- 44:16Speaker 2: after the game that say that they're they're capital w
- 44:19Speaker 2: worried about how good Drake May played in that game.
- 44:21Speaker 4: I know they're also capital w worried about their own
- 44:23Speaker 4: football team. They were not happy about that.
- 44:26Speaker 2: No, there was boo birds at halftime, them off the field.
- 44:29Speaker 2: But a lot of people that I know in Buffalo,
- 44:31Speaker 2: you know, friends of mine, and I'm sure your friends
- 44:33Speaker 2: said the same thing. We went to school and upper
- 44:36Speaker 2: Upstate New York, so we all have we all have
- 44:37Speaker 2: friends that was more just mad about Yeah. You know
- 44:43Speaker 2: a lot of Patriots can't believe it. But a lot
- 44:45Speaker 2: of people I think in Buffalo are like, well, now
- 44:48Speaker 2: they have their own Josh Allen, so if they get
- 44:50Speaker 2: this situation around it correct. Anyways, let's get back to
- 44:54Speaker 2: the actual list here. So my number two up was
- 44:58Speaker 2: Jeremiah Farms, basically a one man pass rush in this game.
- 45:02Speaker 2: He had five quarterback pressures. Nobody else on the team
- 45:04Speaker 2: had more than one, So it was really Jeremiah Farms
- 45:08Speaker 2: getting pressure on the quarterback. I do think that was
- 45:10Speaker 2: by design that they were willing to let Jeremiah Farms
- 45:14Speaker 2: rush Josh Allen, expecting Josh Allen to go out out
- 45:18Speaker 2: of the back of the pocket rather than going up
- 45:20Speaker 2: through the middle of the pocket. So if you let
- 45:22Speaker 2: those interior guys kind of tee off a little bit
- 45:25Speaker 2: and then you keep the edges, you know, firm and
- 45:27Speaker 2: make him stay in the pocket, you have some opportunity.
- 45:30Speaker 2: He had the sack when he kind of you know,
- 45:32Speaker 2: ran into him. But I thought he was the one
- 45:35Speaker 2: guy that had impactful pressures in this game and was
- 45:38Speaker 2: getting after the quarterback a little bit. Yeah, I thought
- 45:40Speaker 2: I thought he saw a game n number three. I
- 45:43Speaker 2: did put Kaishan Boudi on here. I thought Kishan Boudi
- 45:47Speaker 2: was really good in this game. Twenty eight yard touchdown. Obviously,
- 45:50Speaker 2: he had the twenty two yarder on the crosser that
- 45:52Speaker 2: I was just talking about, where Drake May the off
- 45:55Speaker 2: platform throw, and then he had another chunk play that
- 45:57Speaker 2: was left on the field that Drake, one of his
- 45:59Speaker 2: sprays in this game, you know, missed him coming across
- 46:02Speaker 2: the field. That probably would have been another twenty twenty
- 46:05Speaker 2: five yard game at least if he hits him in
- 46:07Speaker 2: stride there. So it almost makes up for the fact
- 46:10Speaker 2: that thirty one of his yards came on a garbage
- 46:12Speaker 2: play ten and a half because he should have had
- 46:14Speaker 2: you know, the play on the chunk play that Drake
- 46:17Speaker 2: May missed him. So I thought Kai Shan Boody has
- 46:20Speaker 2: continued to show that he belongs in an NFL receiver room. Yeah.
- 46:24Speaker 2: I don't know if he's a starting X receiver in
- 46:26Speaker 2: the league, but he is a receiver in the league.
- 46:28Speaker 4: He's still just so inconsistent. Yeah, it's tough to count
- 46:31Speaker 4: on him for anything. If he's your fourth or fifth receiver.
- 46:34Speaker 4: Throwing him out there ten fifteen snaps a game kind
- 46:36Speaker 4: of his insurance. I think that's probably the role for him.
- 46:40Speaker 4: This is kind of what we've seen from him his
- 46:42Speaker 4: whole two years here. There's moments where he looks great,
- 46:45Speaker 4: but there's just not enough of them strung together.
- 46:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's fair. All right, let's go to the downs.
- 46:50Speaker 2: You got seventeen of them, So Harry, I have five.
- 46:53Speaker 4: It's really for ramondre Stevenson number one. I so we
- 46:57Speaker 4: haven't talked about.
- 46:58Speaker 2: It was tough for me. Sorry to cut you off,
- 47:00Speaker 2: but he also had a ridiculous fourteen yard touchdown run. Yeah,
- 47:04Speaker 2: so I was. I kind of love the defense about him.
- 47:06Speaker 4: So through his first I think he's too. Have this
- 47:11Speaker 4: written down through his first two hundred and ninety nine
- 47:14Speaker 4: career care I'll do it this way. Through his first three.
- 47:17Speaker 2: NFL seasons, Yes, he had seven fumbles. Yeah, this year
- 47:22Speaker 2: he has seven fumbles. Yeah, it's it's a real Yeah.
- 47:25Speaker 4: In his first three hundred and ninety nine career carries,
- 47:28Speaker 4: he had seven fumbles. In the last two hundred five,
- 47:29Speaker 4: he has seven, almost hat like twice the fumble rate.
- 47:33Speaker 2: I also, so we haven't talked about the backwards lateral
- 47:36Speaker 2: play yet.
- 47:37Speaker 4: I call me a sucker if you want. I kind
- 47:41Speaker 4: of believe Alex van Pelt. I take his side on this.
- 47:44Speaker 4: Is it a great play to call?
- 47:45Speaker 2: There?
- 47:45Speaker 4: No, I see what they're going for. The Bills are
- 47:48Speaker 4: getting really aggressive in their rush. They're trying to catch
- 47:50Speaker 4: the Bills coming upfield, throw something quick behind him and
- 47:53Speaker 4: get going. I would have probably called just a traditional
- 47:58Speaker 4: half back slip screen, will slip screen. I think that
- 48:02Speaker 4: is less risky. It achieves the same goal. Now that
- 48:05Speaker 4: being said, every why would you call backwards pass in
- 48:08Speaker 4: that situation? It's not supposed to be a backwards pass.
- 48:12Speaker 4: Ramandre Stevenson sunk his rat. Why did Ramandre Stevenson sink
- 48:16Speaker 4: his route? I'm gonna combine my first two downs because
- 48:18Speaker 4: Demandre Jacobs, who's the other one, misses the cut block,
- 48:21Speaker 4: and Stevenson sens is the pressure steps back. Something of
- 48:24Speaker 4: this is on Drake two. You got to either lead
- 48:26Speaker 4: him forward or throw that ball at his feet or
- 48:28Speaker 4: throw it away. Should van Pel, I'll have a better
- 48:31Speaker 4: read on the personnel. You're asking Demontrey Jacobs, who's had
- 48:33Speaker 4: a rough game to cut block a great edge rusher, Like, yeah,
- 48:36Speaker 4: Van Pel's not innocent in this either, But let's not
- 48:39Speaker 4: act like they were like, Oh, yeah, we're gonna throw
- 48:40Speaker 4: the ball backwards four yards because that's a good play. Yeah,
- 48:43Speaker 4: it's supposed to be a very basic half back flat route.
- 48:48Speaker 4: The execution I don't know. I couldn't think that word.
- 48:53Speaker 4: The execution is blown at three levels and I think
- 48:56Speaker 4: that and on top of that, I know we got hit,
- 48:58Speaker 4: but my rule ball hits in both hands, catch it,
- 49:01Speaker 4: and that goes to there are some drops elsewhere in
- 49:03Speaker 4: the game, frankly goes to Drake May's fumble too, Like
- 49:07Speaker 4: I thought, ste if I'm assigning blame on that play
- 49:09Speaker 4: to Monterrey, Jacobs is number one to me, Stevenson's number two,
- 49:14Speaker 4: then Van Pelt, then Drake. Was it the best play call?
- 49:18Speaker 6: No?
- 49:19Speaker 4: And this is a line we've kind of walked this
- 49:21Speaker 4: year where on one hand, you say, okay, but know
- 49:25Speaker 4: who your personnel are. If you can't execute it, don't
- 49:27Speaker 4: call it. But if you're in that camp, you can't
- 49:31Speaker 4: complain that the play callings to Vanilla, right, because if
- 49:35Speaker 4: you're just calling off the talent, that leaves a lot
- 49:38Speaker 4: of things off your play sheet. So for what they are,
- 49:42Speaker 4: a three and eleven team trying to pull an upset again,
- 49:43Speaker 4: I wouldn't have called that exact play, but they tried something.
- 49:48Speaker 4: They they took a shot at something. I don't fault
- 49:51Speaker 4: the play call a ton there a little bit because
- 49:54Speaker 4: I think could have been better, but not a ton
- 49:56Speaker 4: because if you're only gonna call, you can do off
- 49:58Speaker 4: the personnel. They're really just not gonna be running that
- 50:00Speaker 4: many plays.
- 50:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so I did in the moment. The reason why
- 50:04Speaker 2: I wasn't like totally critical of it was because they
- 50:07Speaker 2: had a drive earlier after the Mapu interception where they
- 50:10Speaker 2: were backed up and Drake May threw two really solid
- 50:14Speaker 2: passes backed up in his own end zone, one of
- 50:16Speaker 2: them with his feet in the end zone to get
- 50:19Speaker 2: is that the great throat? Yeah, that was a great
- 50:22Speaker 2: throw and the third down throat. He was really good.
- 50:24Speaker 4: Sorry just on Drakes, you didn't touch on it. He
- 50:27Speaker 4: was really good outside the numbers in this game, which
- 50:29Speaker 4: is a ton of fun.
- 50:29Speaker 2: Yeah. He made a throw on third down to Austin
- 50:33Speaker 2: Hooper on a little stick route where he throws it before,
- 50:35Speaker 2: like with anticipation, before Hooper came out of his break
- 50:39Speaker 2: from like his five yard line. Like, that's a ballsy throw,
- 50:42Speaker 2: right for a rookie quarterback to to just let that
- 50:44Speaker 2: thing go and trust that your receiver is gonna get
- 50:47Speaker 2: open and that it's gonna hit off, you know, correctly.
- 50:50Speaker 2: So watching how poised he was in that situation earlier
- 50:53Speaker 2: on in the game, I had no problem with him
- 50:56Speaker 2: trying to throw later on in the game because he
- 50:59Speaker 2: already proved that he could do it in this environment.
- 51:01Speaker 2: The only the only little nitpick that I had of
- 51:04Speaker 2: Drake May, and I thought Van Pelt said it well
- 51:07Speaker 2: about the fumble. It was he was a little fast,
- 51:10Speaker 2: like that's probably one, yeah, that he was a little
- 51:13Speaker 2: sped up on. And you should probably at least confirm
- 51:15Speaker 2: that the end is cut before you throw the ball,
- 51:18Speaker 2: because if you're Drake May, and I've heard, you know,
- 51:20Speaker 2: Brian Hoyer said throw it at his feet. Well, it's
- 51:22Speaker 2: a backward pass. Have you thrown at his feet? Right?
- 51:24Speaker 2: He likes either way, it's a fumble.
- 51:26Speaker 4: When you throw a roll out, throw it at a bounds,
- 51:29Speaker 4: you probably have somebody in the backs.
- 51:30Speaker 2: Like run it for a no gain sack or something,
- 51:33Speaker 2: you know what I mean. Like, there's other options to
- 51:35Speaker 2: eat it without throwing it behind the line.
- 51:37Speaker 4: One other take on that Drake May did this once.
- 51:40Speaker 4: But I saw this a ton in the NFL the
- 51:43Speaker 4: last few weeks and in college. Have you noticed this
- 51:46Speaker 4: rising trend of quarterbacks running out of bounds behind the
- 51:49Speaker 4: line of scrimmage?
- 51:51Speaker 2: It was it this week or in Arizona. That is
- 51:53Speaker 2: this week.
- 51:53Speaker 4: You might have done in Arizona too, but it happened
- 51:55Speaker 4: a couple of times in the college games. It happened.
- 51:58Speaker 2: I think CJ.
- 51:59Speaker 4: Stroud did it.
- 52:00Speaker 2: Against the Chiefs last week. I hate it. I actually
- 52:02Speaker 2: might have counted it as a minus player and I
- 52:04Speaker 2: hate it.
- 52:05Speaker 4: I don't know why this is suddenly a thing. I
- 52:06Speaker 4: don't know if it's stat padding, I don't know what
- 52:08Speaker 4: it is. If you're like toe on the line, just
- 52:11Speaker 4: flick it, just flick it out of bounds.
- 52:13Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know what it is, but I mean
- 52:14Speaker 2: in this game it was a one yard loss. Compared
- 52:17Speaker 2: to it, he wasn't as egregious as some of the
- 52:18Speaker 2: other ones I've seen. Anyway, that was a side. You know,
- 52:21Speaker 2: he has done it a couple of times. We're being
- 52:23Speaker 2: a little critical on Drake though, so it's gonna reel back. No.
- 52:26Speaker 4: No, I honestly, I really meant that as like there
- 52:29Speaker 4: were some not Drake. It just made me think of it,
- 52:31Speaker 4: some really egregious ones elsewhere around the league. This has
- 52:35Speaker 4: been a trend. Like I really think the whole year,
- 52:37Speaker 4: I didn't see Mahomes do it.
- 52:38Speaker 2: Bad coaching. What do we do it. Yeah. Yeah, a
- 52:41Speaker 2: lot of these quarterbacks, I think too, you know that
- 52:43Speaker 2: are mobile. Everybody's mobile now at that position for the
- 52:47Speaker 2: most part. And so I wonder how much of it
- 52:50Speaker 2: is is that they get out the pocket, have their
- 52:53Speaker 2: eyes downfield trying to make a play, and they kind
- 52:55Speaker 2: of lose where they are relative to the line of scrimmage,
- 52:58Speaker 2: you know what I mean. I think that's an element
- 53:01Speaker 2: of it. Two. And like, if you're in that situation,
- 53:04Speaker 2: if you're running up the field, like you feel yourself
- 53:07Speaker 2: running up the field right, so you can probably think
- 53:09Speaker 2: to yourself, oh, I'm definitely pass the line of scrimmage
- 53:11Speaker 2: at this point, when you're really not because you drop
- 53:14Speaker 2: back so far right, you lost so much ground in
- 53:16Speaker 2: your drop. Anyways, I still had Drake for eleven plus
- 53:20Speaker 2: place to seven minus. He was still in that positive
- 53:22Speaker 2: in this game. So I don't want to make it
- 53:23Speaker 2: sound like we're ragging on him too much. But now
- 53:26Speaker 2: that they get into these games, to your point about
- 53:28Speaker 2: the in game coaching, like these these four or five plays,
- 53:31Speaker 2: I think that was another thing that Mayor Van Pelt
- 53:33Speaker 2: said today. They basically lost this game because of like
- 53:37Speaker 2: four or five plays, right, and that. That's what it
- 53:39Speaker 2: comes down to. My number one down in this game.
- 53:42Speaker 2: You mentioned him already was Trey Jacobs. Was this was tough.
- 53:46Speaker 2: This was a tough go of it for Trey Jacobs.
- 53:48Speaker 2: Five quarterback pressures, two quarterback hits, two false starts, and
- 53:52Speaker 2: the blown chop block also cut block whatever you want
- 53:55Speaker 2: to call it. I call it cut block as a
- 53:57Speaker 2: chop box. I legal cut block on Greg Russo on
- 54:01Speaker 2: the fumble six. So just some really non competitive reps too.
- 54:06Speaker 2: I think that's what stood out the most to me. Look,
- 54:09Speaker 2: five pressures isn't the worst game I've ever seen from
- 54:11Speaker 2: a tackle. I mean there's been times the guys have
- 54:13Speaker 2: been in the double digits, so it's not horrible in
- 54:16Speaker 2: that respect. But he had four or five reps against
- 54:20Speaker 2: von Miller where he didn't even get his hand on
- 54:22Speaker 2: von Miller as he was coming around the edge, Like
- 54:24Speaker 2: just non competitive blowbys. Those can't happen, Like you have
- 54:28Speaker 2: to at least be a traffic on right, You have
- 54:30Speaker 2: to at least get him to go and widen the
- 54:33Speaker 2: rush a little bit, Like you can't just have these
- 54:36Speaker 2: no contest rushes like he did in this game. So
- 54:41Speaker 2: Kidden Wallace if if he's starting to heat up a
- 54:43Speaker 2: little bit in practice. I definitely do think that this
- 54:46Speaker 2: is the type of game where you could consider making
- 54:49Speaker 2: a move. Now, they're going to have a new center
- 54:51Speaker 2: already in cal Strange it sounds like for Sunday, so
- 54:54Speaker 2: that would be two new starters. But look, you're three
- 54:56Speaker 2: and three and twelve and you have two games to
- 54:59Speaker 2: go in the season. It's not really right whatever point, Yeah,
- 55:03Speaker 2: all right, number two down.
- 55:06Speaker 4: Well, so I had steems in Jacob's Kyle Duggar. Yeah,
- 55:09Speaker 4: he had one play in this game where I think
- 55:13Speaker 4: it was knocks catches the pass and the flat and
- 55:15Speaker 4: Dugger runs right up and sticks him. Yeah, no, shars,
- 55:18Speaker 4: Where has that guy been? Yeah, that's the Kyle Dugger
- 55:20Speaker 4: I know. But missed another couple more tackles. He just
- 55:23Speaker 4: he still doesn't look right.
- 55:25Speaker 2: He's playing through something. I think that's pretty clear at
- 55:28Speaker 2: this point. I just had my number two, and I
- 55:30Speaker 2: just had the run defense as a whole. I just
- 55:32Speaker 2: think everybody just stunk in that regard. You know, eight misstackles,
- 55:36Speaker 2: like I mentioned earlier, in the run game, four of
- 55:39Speaker 2: them would have been tackles for loss. You give up
- 55:41Speaker 2: a forty six yard touchdown in this game. In the
- 55:44Speaker 2: run game, and to your point, the Bills could have
- 55:47Speaker 2: ran the ball all day long.
- 55:48Speaker 4: I don't know why.
- 55:48Speaker 2: I don't know why they didn't either. I don't I
- 55:51Speaker 2: expect the Chargers to run the ball all day long
- 55:53Speaker 2: on Saturday. Like this run defense is just it's just bad.
- 55:56Speaker 2: Like it's just a bad run defense. So I would
- 55:59Speaker 2: definitely anticipate the Chargers to run the ball a ton.
- 56:02Speaker 2: All Right, what else do you got?
- 56:03Speaker 4: I had Marte Mopu just for running the interception out.
- 56:06Speaker 4: He didn't have a bad game, that was he had.
- 56:09Speaker 2: He had one of the most eventful games. I think
- 56:12Speaker 2: that was a good way to put it. I've ever charted.
- 56:14Speaker 2: Like there was some plays where he was just really
- 56:17Speaker 2: good on the play right, like the crosser that he
- 56:20Speaker 2: undercut where he almost picked it off again on the
- 56:23Speaker 2: next drive after the interception, was a really good coverage rep. Like,
- 56:27Speaker 2: that's a really good rep. He had some really high
- 56:30Speaker 2: level play in this game, even the interception, Like does
- 56:33Speaker 2: a nice job of playing the post and you know,
- 56:35Speaker 2: just not getting baited out or anything like that and
- 56:38Speaker 2: just sit there and wait for the ball to come
- 56:40Speaker 2: to you. Some really good plays in this game. And
- 56:42Speaker 2: then he also had some really knucklehead plays in this game,
- 56:46Speaker 2: so he was a tough one. Yeah, and then I just.
- 56:49Speaker 4: Had the game management, which we already talked about.
- 56:51Speaker 2: Okay, so I have one more down that you're gonna love,
- 56:54Speaker 2: Oh boy, Josh Allen. I have one more down that
- 56:56Speaker 2: you're gonna love, Josh Allen. Josh Allen. Let's go, Josh Allen.
- 57:01Speaker 2: And I don't mean to like, you know, glasshouses, right,
- 57:06Speaker 2: I get it, but I'm a big Josh Allen fan,
- 57:08Speaker 2: as you know, much to your chagrin, this was one
- 57:12Speaker 2: of the worst Josh Allen games I've seen him play
- 57:14Speaker 2: against the Patriots since he became Josh Allen. Right, we're
- 57:17Speaker 2: talking about rookie year Josh Allen, second year Josh Allen.
- 57:22Speaker 2: With this game. He missed a lot of plays in
- 57:25Speaker 2: this game. He left a lot of plays on the field.
- 57:27Speaker 2: You know, some egregiously wide open receiver type misses a
- 57:31Speaker 2: couple of times. And I just felt like the Patriots,
- 57:34Speaker 2: to their credit, baited him into playing a lot of
- 57:37Speaker 2: hero ball in this game. You know, old Josh Allen
- 57:40Speaker 2: gonna roll right, chuck it, you know, twenty forty five,
- 57:43Speaker 2: fifty yards down the field, you know, low percentage throws.
- 57:46Speaker 2: He had one on the wheel. You mentioned that Christian
- 57:49Speaker 2: Ellis was in good position on he had a couple
- 57:51Speaker 2: to Shakir that just had no chance of being cat.
- 57:54Speaker 2: I don't care that it's an arm punt, Like the
- 57:56Speaker 2: interception was another one where you know, find a profit.
- 57:59Speaker 4: Let's the CBS said, what an arm punt?
- 58:01Speaker 2: Wow?
- 58:01Speaker 4: Because you can't you can't say Josh threw a pick.
- 58:04Speaker 2: So on the one hand, I tested you this on Monday,
- 58:08Speaker 2: the Patriots finally got a bad Josh Allen game, Like,
- 58:10Speaker 2: this was the first bad Josh Allen game that I
- 58:13Speaker 2: think I've seen him have against the Pats in a
- 58:15Speaker 2: long long time. Now, the downside is they didn't win it, right,
- 58:19Speaker 2: Like he kind of handed him an off game by
- 58:22Speaker 2: his standards, and they still didn't win the game, which
- 58:24Speaker 2: is a bummer. But I was I was disappointed in
- 58:27Speaker 2: my guy. He did not play well in this game.
- 58:30Speaker 2: So I had Josh Allen. Yeah. Also, like you know,
- 58:34Speaker 2: a couple honorable mentions, Joe Brady honorable mention, another guy
- 58:38Speaker 2: that I really like. The one thing I'll give them,
- 58:41Speaker 2: I don't think they necessarily thought they had to run
- 58:43Speaker 2: Josh Allen in this game to win it, so they
- 58:46Speaker 2: kind of put the quarterback run stuff on the back
- 58:48Speaker 2: burner and to get him through the.
- 58:50Speaker 4: Game could have run traditional runs.
- 58:51Speaker 2: So that wasn't completely the Bills offense unleashed like we
- 58:56Speaker 2: saw against the Rams and the Lions. That was sort
- 58:59Speaker 2: of like a watered down version of the Bills offense.
- 59:01Speaker 2: But I thought that was a big reason why they
- 59:03Speaker 2: got off to such a bad start in this game
- 59:05Speaker 2: was because they didn't really play their game. They sort
- 59:07Speaker 2: of just put in the four corners offense and thought
- 59:10Speaker 2: that they were gonna roll because the Patriots stink, you know,
- 59:13Speaker 2: like and they they did in the second half to
- 59:16Speaker 2: some degree, but still they left that door open to
- 59:19Speaker 2: get upset in a game they had no business to lose,
- 59:22Speaker 2: and a lot of that I felt like was on
- 59:24Speaker 2: the quarterback and the offensive play caller a couple, you know.
- 59:28Speaker 2: I thought that Rumandra Stevenson was another one that I considered.
- 59:31Speaker 2: The reason why I didn't put Remandre on my list
- 59:33Speaker 2: is because the fourteen yard touchdown run was.
- 59:35Speaker 4: Just I considered not but I just with if it
- 59:39Speaker 4: was like a second or third fund of the year,
- 59:40Speaker 4: I probably wouldn't have, but yeah, because he has faster.
- 59:43Speaker 2: Yep. So that concludes three up, three down. I do
- 59:48Speaker 2: want to discuss a couple of other things with the Patriots,
- 59:51Speaker 2: but I know we have you know, callers and stuff
- 59:53Speaker 2: like that, so we'll get to you guys here in

- 1:00:29Speaker 2: at Bob's Discount Furniture, the official furniture store of the
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: Newland Patriots. I might need one of those storage units
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: like we got we have, like you know our we
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: have like an office slash second bedroom situation, and man,
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: there's stuff everywhere in that room. So maybe i'll I'll
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: go to bots try to buy a storage union. All right,
- 1:00:45Speaker 2: let's get to the phones here, Patty is an aguam.
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: What's up? Patty?
- 1:00:51Speaker 7: Hey guys, it's going on.
- 1:00:53Speaker 2: Hey, what's up?
- 1:00:55Speaker 7: So my question you were just talking about the guy
- 1:00:58Speaker 7: I was gonna ask a question about, which is Remandre Stevenson.
- 1:01:02Speaker 7: I know it's not really a team friendly contract, but
- 1:01:06Speaker 7: it's a decent enough contract. Where do you guys think
- 1:01:09Speaker 7: they have there's a chance that might move on from
- 1:01:11Speaker 7: them after this year, do to his bumbling problems or
- 1:01:16Speaker 7: or do you think they try and get him some
- 1:01:17Speaker 7: help in the off season, Like I had the idea
- 1:01:20Speaker 7: on John Rook Show on Tuesday, maybe looking them up
- 1:01:24Speaker 7: with somebody like Peaky Barber who had bumbling problems early
- 1:01:27Speaker 7: in his career. And then I don't know what he did,
- 1:01:30Speaker 7: but like he shored it up, and that's all I got.
- 1:01:33Speaker 7: I'll take it off the year, guys, and happy holidays.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: Man, Thanks Patty, thanks for the call. Yeah, and happy
- 1:01:39Speaker 2: holidays to you too. Look, the Remondre thing is uh
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: is a concern with the fumbles. It's not even early
- 1:01:46Speaker 2: on in his career though, Like I feel like Tiki
- 1:01:48Speaker 2: Barber was right out of the gate. Againmondre had as
- 1:01:51Speaker 2: many fumbles in his first three years as he did
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: this year. This is kind of new. Yeah, it's a
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: new thing. I don't know what it is. You know,
- 1:01:57Speaker 2: his running style, he does invite a crowd, and I
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: think now people know that. So when you have two
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: three guys around the ball, not everybody has to tackle him,
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: so they some guys are going to start punching for
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: the ball and start doing that sort of thing. I
- 1:02:12Speaker 2: like Antonio Gibson, I do. I think Antonio Gibson's a solid,
- 1:02:16Speaker 2: uh change of pace back. So I don't know what
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: the answer is, Like maybe maybe you get a third
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: running back in here. But you know, now you're really
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: talking about replacing Ramandre Stevenson, hoping that that draft pick
- 1:02:28Speaker 2: is better, you know, Like, I don't think that that's
- 1:02:31Speaker 2: necessarily so much about helping him, Like I think Gibson's
- 1:02:34Speaker 2: been enough of help.
- 1:02:36Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's he's already been a spellback. You're not
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: gonna spell him anymore. He can't really get out of
- 1:02:40Speaker 4: that contract. You're not gonna sit him on that contract. Yeah,
- 1:02:43Speaker 4: he just has to work through it. Like he's gonna
- 1:02:46Speaker 4: be here and after next year it's another conversation, but
- 1:02:47Speaker 4: he's gonna be here next year, and there really is
- 1:02:50Speaker 4: much of an option besides him working through it.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Colleen is in Houston. What's up, Colleen?
- 1:02:57Speaker 5: Hey, guys, can you hear me?
- 1:02:58Speaker 2: Hey? Yes?
- 1:03:00Speaker 8: Perfect?
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: Okay, So I have a couple comments and then questions.
- 1:03:05Speaker 6: So my comment is I would agree with Alex about
- 1:03:10Speaker 6: like getting a winning record or not record, but oh,
- 1:03:16Speaker 6: winning DNA is great. But if they win against Mitch Trubisky,
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: who sucks like, that's not gonna give the locker room
- 1:03:28Speaker 6: a boost anyway. But my question is, so you guys
- 1:03:32Speaker 6: like Will Campbell, which is great, but he apparently is
- 1:03:38Speaker 6: small arms, So how do you feel about Kelvin Banks?
- 1:03:42Speaker 6: And then also, Joe Tooney is currently playing left tackle
- 1:03:48Speaker 6: with short arms.
- 1:03:49Speaker 5: How do you feel about that?
- 1:03:51Speaker 2: Okay, thanks guys, Thanks Colin. I appreciate the call. And
- 1:03:54Speaker 2: you know, to the Joe Touney thing, Joe Tony is
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: like a cyborg. That guy's an alien. You can play
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: him at left guard, you could play him at left
- 1:04:00Speaker 2: tackle and he's gonna just block people.
- 1:04:01Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:04:02Speaker 4: And it's also I mean, he's been in the NFL
- 1:04:04Speaker 4: for years and years and years. He knows how it works.
- 1:04:06Speaker 4: He's not trying to make that jump like he's been
- 1:04:08Speaker 4: blocking NFL rushers for a while.
- 1:04:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:04:10Speaker 2: I don't know what his arm length is exactly, just
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: pulled up quarter okay, because he played tackle in college. Yeah,
- 1:04:16Speaker 2: Joe Toney did, and then they moved him inside when
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: he got to the NFL. Uh with Will Campbell in
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: his arm length and you know, we'll see, we'll see
- 1:04:23Speaker 2: what it is in Indie. I thought Calvin Banks showed
- 1:04:25Speaker 2: really well against Clemson. Now Clemson was totally overmatched in
- 1:04:28Speaker 2: that game.
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: It's Clemson. They always have a good defense.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: And we'll get to the college football playoff here at
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: a second, because I know we want to do those
- 1:04:35Speaker 2: takes too. But look, we're gonna debate the Will Campbell
- 1:04:39Speaker 2: short arm not short arm left tackle guard conversation for
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: months and months and months, And at this point, he
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: doesn't have any any film that I haven't seen, right, Like,
- 1:04:49Speaker 2: there's no new film. I don't know. I think is
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: he gonna play in their bowl game? I doubt it.
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: Yeah, I think he already said he might have already
- 1:04:55Speaker 4: said he's not, but I doubt it.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: Yeah, right, So, like there's not a ton of new
- 1:04:58Speaker 2: film for him at this point, So it really comes
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: down to what the measurements and what we see in Indianapolis.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Like that the combine is gonna be the determining factor
- 1:05:07Speaker 2: for him. And I thought it was interesting.
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: Scott Peters said, was it last week that thirty three
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: inches is not a definite cutoff?
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: Him, Like, you've got to be really good and know
- 1:05:16Speaker 4: what you're doing if you're under thirty three. But even
- 1:05:20Speaker 4: if he gets close, there's a lot to think about there.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: All right, we're gonna take a quick break and then
- 1:05:23Speaker 2: we're gonna come back and now we're gonna take all
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: your calls and emails and do some draft in college
- 1:05:28Speaker 2: football tox Soles, See you guys in a second.

- 1:09:42Speaker 2: has in your day. Your day is still going after this.
- 1:09:46Speaker 4: I got one more show and then oh yeah, I'm
- 1:09:48Speaker 4: a writer.
- 1:09:49Speaker 2: I got it, hardest working guy in Boston.
- 1:09:53Speaker 4: And then I'm on back on the radio ten am tomorrow.
- 1:09:55Speaker 2: So I'm but but this is a big week for you.
- 1:09:57Speaker 4: No, I love it, like I take you know what
- 1:10:00Speaker 4: I do this all the time.
- 1:10:00Speaker 2: Oh, poor Alex. She used to talk about football all day.
- 1:10:03Speaker 2: What a toll life like? No, what you are doing
- 1:10:06Speaker 2: the world smalest violin.
- 1:10:08Speaker 4: I wouldn't trade it. Well, but I can admit that
- 1:10:10Speaker 4: I like you, who genuinely complains, I wouldn't trade it.
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: That being said, I cannot wait to like get a
- 1:10:16Speaker 4: good like fifteen hours night of sleep the day like
- 1:10:21Speaker 4: so the season ends, but like the seat when the
- 1:10:23Speaker 4: seats and the season will end for us next Sunday. Right, yes,
- 1:10:26Speaker 4: but that's not like when the season ends, because you
- 1:10:28Speaker 4: have like it's usually not the whole week like Monday, Tuesday,
- 1:10:31Speaker 4: Wednesday's recap stuff. You'll do like here's who they're playing
- 1:10:34Speaker 4: next year, Here's who the free agents are, blah blah blah.
- 1:10:37Speaker 4: But like that, honestly that Thursday will love the show. Yeah,
- 1:10:40Speaker 4: and I'm probably gonna go home and sleep until the
- 1:10:43Speaker 4: playoff games starts Saturday afternoon. I'll probably sleep until Saturday afternoon.
- 1:10:46Speaker 2: I look, I get it, And yeah, you know, I'll
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: still do like my film review on Monday from week eighteen,
- 1:10:53Speaker 2: that will still do one. So really you're talking about
- 1:10:57Speaker 2: like Tuesday or Wednesday for the season to officially the usually.
- 1:11:00Speaker 4: Like Wednesday night, I'm starting to wrap it up. We
- 1:11:02Speaker 4: have the show Thursday, so it's like yeah time.
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that's true. Yeah, so maybe a Thursday when the
- 1:11:08Speaker 2: show's over, nice, we'll both feel like it's uh and
- 1:11:13Speaker 2: then I'll be in mobile like two weeks later. Right,
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: it's not I think.
- 1:11:18Speaker 4: I can't like, I can't rest for too long because
- 1:11:20Speaker 4: then it gets st her crazy. Yeah, I need to
- 1:11:21Speaker 4: do something, so like four or five days about where
- 1:11:24Speaker 4: I'm at.
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, back to football. Yeah, and I do
- 1:11:28Speaker 2: want to talk a little bit of college football playoffs.
- 1:11:30Speaker 2: And you said we had to do a segment on
- 1:11:32Speaker 2: college football Playoffs. So here's our segment on it. I'm
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: not gonna get on you about the fact that these
- 1:11:37Speaker 2: games were not competitive.
- 1:11:39Speaker 4: Can I say this, what a weird weekend for me
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: because two of my big takes, especially on the show,
- 1:11:45Speaker 4: are you underrate college football and you overrate Josh Allen.
- 1:11:49Speaker 4: And I'm sitting there watching those games, like, man, this
- 1:11:53Speaker 4: what a sucky weekend. None of these games are good.
- 1:11:57Speaker 4: I gotta watch Josh Allen tear up the Patriots tomorrow.
- 1:12:00Speaker 4: This just and then out of nowhere, Josh Allen just
- 1:12:03Speaker 4: turns back into pre Brian Daveall Josh Allen. I'm like,
- 1:12:07Speaker 4: all right, I kind of figured everything wasn't gonna go
- 1:12:09Speaker 4: my way this weekend, but if that's the one that does,
- 1:12:12Speaker 4: I will absolutely take that.
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: A complete roller coaster of a weekend for me. So
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: I'm texting you during the college football games on Saturday,
- 1:12:20Speaker 2: just killing you about how you know, oh cool, we
- 1:12:23Speaker 2: got to watch everybody get blown out by four touchdowns
- 1:12:26Speaker 2: by much better teams. This was really fun. Really glad
- 1:12:29Speaker 2: that we put you know some you in the college
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: football playoffs, and Indiana like, good for you. You got
- 1:12:34Speaker 2: your participation trophy. You deserve to be there. Well, there
- 1:12:37Speaker 2: we go.
- 1:12:38Speaker 4: Hang on, if you're gonna do that rant. First of all,
- 1:12:39Speaker 4: Indiana had the closest game of any team in the playoffs.
- 1:12:42Speaker 2: Oh but what was it? What was the final? Yeah
- 1:12:45Speaker 2: it was ten points? But like not really?
- 1:12:47Speaker 4: Okay, So you mentioned SMU. Okay, Kirk Kurbstreet and look,
- 1:12:50Speaker 4: I love Kirk. I love Kirk, but I hate him
- 1:12:52Speaker 4: and the rest of ESPN. He's spot on, he's he's
- 1:12:55Speaker 4: being a company man for ESPN, but he's not. You
- 1:12:58Speaker 4: mentioned ESPN or you mentioned SMU, you mentioned Indiana. You
- 1:13:03Speaker 4: didn't mention the team that had the biggest loss of
- 1:13:05Speaker 4: any this weekend. I wonder why that is. That's Tennessee.
- 1:13:10Speaker 4: Oh that's sec Darling Tennessee.
- 1:13:12Speaker 2: Okay, but they also played one of the best teams.
- 1:13:15Speaker 2: They all played the best teams. It's the playoffs now,
- 1:13:18Speaker 2: it's not the best teams. That's my point.
- 1:13:20Speaker 4: They all played Penny State's not one of the best teams.
- 1:13:23Speaker 2: Yes, but Notre Dame. I don't think was in the playoffs.
- 1:13:27Speaker 2: Your argument, dissipation trophy, here's a ribbon. You made it.
- 1:13:31Speaker 4: You deserve your argument the whole time. Why can't we
- 1:13:35Speaker 4: get a big boy team like Alabama.
- 1:13:37Speaker 2: In the playoff ye.
- 1:13:38Speaker 4: Miss album, Alabama lost to Tennessee, who got spanked by
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: old Miss.
- 1:13:42Speaker 2: Okay, but I don't like that. It's not about the
- 1:13:45Speaker 2: Alabama property. No, but it's not a transitive property. Because
- 1:13:50Speaker 2: Alabama played Tennessee third Saturday in October. It's December. So
- 1:13:56Speaker 2: you're telling me that Alabama hasn't gotten any better since October.
- 1:14:00Speaker 4: No, they've actually pretty much gotten continually worse as the
- 1:14:02Speaker 4: years GOO, as the year has gone on. It's been
- 1:14:04Speaker 4: very concerning, frankly. But the point I'm making is what
- 1:14:08Speaker 4: I think happened. I don't think it was about the teams,
- 1:14:11Speaker 4: and it goes back to something we actually talked about.
- 1:14:13Speaker 2: With Drake May. Yeah. There.
- 1:14:16Speaker 4: I think there's never been games like this. This was
- 1:14:19Speaker 4: the first on campus, true postseason game college football history
- 1:14:23Speaker 4: since nineteen o two.
- 1:14:24Speaker 2: It's a yeah, it is.
- 1:14:27Speaker 4: It's I think the environments for too were too big,
- 1:14:30Speaker 4: and for a team like SMU. I think for a
- 1:14:32Speaker 4: team like Tennessee the cold, that Tennessee team was not
- 1:14:35Speaker 4: ready to go in that environment.
- 1:14:37Speaker 2: I can't believe you're blaming a bunch of children, a
- 1:14:39Speaker 2: bunch of.
- 1:14:40Speaker 4: Eighteen Well, it's a lot for kids to handle. And ultimately,
- 1:14:44Speaker 4: you know what, it's gonna be a good thing for
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: the NFL because when we talk about a rookie quarterback
- 1:14:49Speaker 4: first time in this environment, what's gonna be like, Like
- 1:14:52Speaker 4: Nico's gonna be from Tennessee's gonna be an NFL quarterback
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: at some point. I know he had a bad game,
- 1:14:56Speaker 4: He's gonna be a NFL quarterback. His first playoff game
- 1:14:59Speaker 4: is gonna be a lot easier. Haven't been to the
- 1:15:01Speaker 4: shoe for what that was, so I don't And and
- 1:15:04Speaker 4: it also we're gonna talk about, well, playoff caliber game
- 1:15:06Speaker 4: should be close. The NFL had a pair of whatever
- 1:15:10Speaker 4: essentially playoff matchups this weekend.
- 1:15:12Speaker 2: How close were those games? So were the first round
- 1:15:15Speaker 2: games duds? Absolutely? Absolutely they were? And you know what, Frank,
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: it's probably good. It's probably gonna be that way for
- 1:15:23Speaker 2: the next few years. I don't think. I don't think
- 1:15:25Speaker 2: it wasn't worth it.
- 1:15:25Speaker 4: All it was because here's the thing. I don't think
- 1:15:28Speaker 4: we'll get all four being duds all the time. But
- 1:15:30Speaker 4: there's gonn be duds in there, because that's what happens
- 1:15:31Speaker 4: in the playoffs. It happens in the NFL. The average
- 1:15:34Speaker 4: scoring margin for the first round was only two points
- 1:15:37Speaker 4: higher than it was for wild Card weekend last year.
- 1:15:39Speaker 4: And don't tell me that it's called because that one
- 1:15:41Speaker 4: blowout because the Cowboys Packers blowing out the Cowboys. Cowboys
- 1:15:45Speaker 4: scored two garbage time touchdowns. The other thing is the
- 1:15:48Speaker 4: the round of eight games are gonna be awesome, Like
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: Oregon Ohio State to me is the national championship. And
- 1:15:54Speaker 4: I think you said that too.
- 1:15:55Speaker 2: Which I don't like because that game is it's only
- 1:15:58Speaker 2: a quarterfinal game. Oh but that that happens all the time?
- 1:16:01Speaker 2: How many times? But Oregon Ohio State to me like that,
- 1:16:05Speaker 2: it just feels like that should be a game that
- 1:16:08Speaker 2: was played later on in this playoff and it's not
- 1:16:10Speaker 2: because of the format of the bye weeks for teams
- 1:16:13Speaker 2: like Arizona States. That doesn't the other team that has
- 1:16:17Speaker 2: the buy that shouldn't BYU no boise boise I received,
- 1:16:22Speaker 2: I would receve I know where BYU came, I would.
- 1:16:24Speaker 4: Receed after the first round because they were supposed to
- 1:16:26Speaker 4: be in it. They're supposed to win the Big twelve.
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: I think that if that happs all how many times?
- 1:16:33Speaker 2: Okay, but if they didn't have a bye. These stupid
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: bye week set up right where it's not done by
- 1:16:38Speaker 2: the seed, it's done by winning your conference. Just just
- 1:16:40Speaker 2: let me finish it. If they don't. If they didn't
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: have that, then teams like Ohio State, like Ohio State
- 1:16:46Speaker 2: would have been one of the top four teams.
- 1:16:48Speaker 4: They finished ranked fifth.
- 1:16:51Speaker 2: I think they finished Okay, Well, then they're still not
- 1:16:53Speaker 2: playing Oregon, is my point. No, you're not getting the
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: two best teams in the playoffs.
- 1:16:57Speaker 4: And I would go back to the original seeding after
- 1:17:00Speaker 4: the first round. That is a change they should make.
- 1:17:02Speaker 4: I do like the winning your conference having a bye
- 1:17:05Speaker 4: because it makes winning your conference worth something, which I
- 1:17:08Speaker 4: think is important because it keeps the regular season relevant.
- 1:17:11Speaker 4: But like, how many times did the Patriots did Brady
- 1:17:15Speaker 4: and Manning meet in the divisional round? And you know,
- 1:17:18Speaker 4: like when he was with the Broncos and there were
- 1:17:20Speaker 4: those Andrew Locke no Defense Colts teams that were still
- 1:17:24Speaker 4: getting to the AFC Championship, but we knew Brady Manning
- 1:17:26Speaker 4: in the divisional round, like yeah, this is this is it,
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: and we didn't complain about it.
- 1:17:30Speaker 2: I think it happened. I think Brady Manning and the
- 1:17:32Speaker 2: division around happened.
- 1:17:33Speaker 4: That happened, but there were a number of other There
- 1:17:34Speaker 4: were sometimes when they met the Ravens in the division,
- 1:17:36Speaker 4: it happened with the Ravens and Reknew like, all right,
- 1:17:38Speaker 4: and you had the t Bow Broncos or whatever in
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: the next round. It was like, I that's just kind
- 1:17:43Speaker 4: of how these things work. I don't really care where
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: the game happens. As long as it happens. There's gonna
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: be some other games in this next round two that
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: are good for reasons that we don't need to spend
- 1:17:52Speaker 4: a ton of time on. You were never going to
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: get eight teams. It was going to be four, twelve
- 1:17:57Speaker 4: or sixteen. Sixteen is too many. We all know four
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: was not enough. I will pay what's eight? What's wrong
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: with eight? It has to do with you have to
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: the SEC and Big ten kind of run it. But
- 1:18:10Speaker 4: you do have to get the other conference on board
- 1:18:12Speaker 4: to a certain extent, and the limited at large bids
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: they didn't feel like they would get properly represented, and
- 1:18:17Speaker 4: blah blah blah blah blah.
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: This is college football's problem. It's this is it right here?
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: That's the crux of the problem is that this is all.
- 1:18:25Speaker 2: At some respect, this is because and I get it,
- 1:18:29Speaker 2: but at some in some points, this is a participation
- 1:18:32Speaker 2: trophy because there's so much money to be made for
- 1:18:36Speaker 2: a program like SMU from being in this game, or
- 1:18:39Speaker 2: a program like Indiana that's trying to be up and
- 1:18:41Speaker 2: coming and is trying to build. Like, there's so much
- 1:18:44Speaker 2: at stake for those types of teams to be included
- 1:18:47Speaker 2: in the playoff that it becomes a situation of we're
- 1:18:50Speaker 2: just putting this team in the playoff because they have
- 1:18:52Speaker 2: the resume for it, but also because we want to partu.
- 1:18:55Speaker 4: Q March madness. We celebrate cinderellas. Why can't we do
- 1:18:59Speaker 4: that here.
- 1:18:59Speaker 2: Because there aren't going to be any cinderellas.
- 1:19:02Speaker 4: Until there is. It took how many years for sixteen
- 1:19:04Speaker 4: to be to one? They said, what never happened a sixteen?
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: No, but I wish not to give you that.
- 1:19:08Speaker 4: I will give you this it eventually it will because
- 1:19:11Speaker 4: they'll they'll see it wrong. It would be a twelve
- 1:19:13Speaker 4: that should be at twelve. I think college football's biggest
- 1:19:18Speaker 4: strength and its biggest weakness are the same thing, which
- 1:19:21Speaker 4: is there is basically no overarching governing body in some
- 1:19:26Speaker 4: ways that makes call because, like the NFL, a lot
- 1:19:29Speaker 4: of the issues with the NFL there's a lot of
- 1:19:31Speaker 4: uniformity to it. Yeah, and the college football does not
- 1:19:34Speaker 4: have uniformity. And in some ways that's a big strength,
- 1:19:37Speaker 4: but in an instance like this, it's a big weakness.
- 1:19:39Speaker 4: I don't think the playoffs perfect. I don't think four
- 1:19:42Speaker 4: bad games it's unfortunate, but I don't think four bad
- 1:19:45Speaker 4: games off the jump are enough to damn the whole tournament.
- 1:19:48Speaker 2: Okay. So that being said, the other big l let's
- 1:19:52Speaker 2: get into some draft stuff. Yeah, I have a I
- 1:19:55Speaker 2: might have a very hot draft take on the playoff
- 1:19:58Speaker 2: that you're either gonna love or hate. Okay. So the
- 1:20:00Speaker 2: other big element of this is obviously what I'm doing,
- 1:20:02Speaker 2: which is watching these games for the purposes of the
- 1:20:05Speaker 2: draft and evaluating guys in the draft. The two biggest
- 1:20:08Speaker 2: takeaways that I have in this game wasn't a big
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: Abdul Carter week. I didn't feel like but I watched
- 1:20:13Speaker 2: some of the film back and it seemed like he
- 1:20:15Speaker 2: was better on film than they.
- 1:20:16Speaker 4: Was watchin smu to a fault made a point in
- 1:20:21Speaker 4: that game of saying we're not gonna go near Abdul Carter.
- 1:20:24Speaker 4: Yeah and yeah, I mean I understand why they did it,
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: but they had when he needed to show up, he
- 1:20:28Speaker 4: showed up. So they had four trips to the red zone.
- 1:20:31Speaker 4: That should have been a close game because they had
- 1:20:33Speaker 4: four trips to When I say that that, I don't
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: mean like they had four trips to the red zone. Yes,
- 1:20:38Speaker 4: they scored three total points. Okay, Penn State's defense came up.
- 1:20:42Speaker 5: Oh.
- 1:20:42Speaker 4: Sorry, one more thing before we get to the draft.
- 1:20:44Speaker 4: Kurt Signetti, Indiana, what do you think of that punt.
- 1:20:47Speaker 2: The fourth and nine? I think that guy's a kook.
- 1:20:49Speaker 4: That's your national coach of the year. Yeah, consensus national
- 1:20:52Speaker 4: coach here. You don't think Bill Belichick's gonna run circles
- 1:20:55Speaker 4: through this thing.
- 1:20:56Speaker 2: He's doing well in the portal. Anyway, back to the draft,
- 1:20:58Speaker 2: Abdual North Carolina Football. I can't wait Abdull Carter. So
- 1:21:04Speaker 2: I thought Abdul Carter looked better than I was expecting.
- 1:21:07Speaker 2: And I agree with your general premise that do you
- 1:21:11Speaker 2: big game planned obviously for a guy like Abdill Carter
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: and sort of or saying we are not going to
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: let him take over the game. And although that might
- 1:21:19Speaker 2: hurt his you know, down to down production a little
- 1:21:21Speaker 2: bit like that's in itself. The case to draft him,
- 1:21:25Speaker 2: right is that he is a game planned player. He's
- 1:21:28Speaker 2: a Tuesday player that you have to then go out
- 1:21:31Speaker 2: and devise a blocking plan, a pass blocking plan for
- 1:21:35Speaker 2: how are we going to take, you know, prevent him
- 1:21:38Speaker 2: from taking over games. That opens up opportunities for other people. Now,
- 1:21:43Speaker 2: Christian Barmore eats Kean White, eats you know whatever. Like
- 1:21:46Speaker 2: I'm just using Patriots for an again, and I'll just
- 1:21:48Speaker 2: add this.
- 1:21:48Speaker 4: And obviously everybody saw what he did on Saturday going
- 1:21:53Speaker 4: into that game. Yeah, abdul Carter, not Abdul Carter, Kevin Jennings,
- 1:21:57Speaker 4: one of the Heisman favorites for next year. And I
- 1:22:00Speaker 4: don't look like correct response. And I think some of
- 1:22:03Speaker 4: that was the moment was just too big for me
- 1:22:05Speaker 4: and he needs to grow. But part of it he's
- 1:22:07Speaker 4: incredibly mobile. He's incredibly good getting around the pocket. So
- 1:22:10Speaker 4: they had a guy that kind of could counter Abdul
- 1:22:12Speaker 4: Carter and they just said, nevermind, we're not gonna touch him.
- 1:22:15Speaker 2: Yeah, they were afraid of him. I would say that
- 1:22:18Speaker 2: that's the least my takeaway from it. I'm just pulling
- 1:22:21Speaker 2: up real quick. His actual pressure is because I think
- 1:22:24Speaker 2: that they were better than maybe what people would have
- 1:22:27Speaker 2: expected watching live in that game.
- 1:22:30Speaker 4: Yeah, you think he was the best, And we'll get
- 1:22:34Speaker 4: to Kelvin Banks. I want to put the cap on,
- 1:22:35Speaker 4: which is what we stall here, and look it up.
- 1:22:38Speaker 4: Did you think he was the best of like the
- 1:22:39Speaker 4: top of the draft guys?
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: No, so I was actually going to get to that.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: So Abdual Carter in this game against four pressures? Yeah,
- 1:22:47Speaker 2: four pressures? So oh no, sorry, five pressures. So it's
- 1:22:50Speaker 2: still pretty good, right, I mean like it was definitely
- 1:22:53Speaker 2: one of those games where you had to watch, Yeah,
- 1:22:55Speaker 2: and you're not going to look at the box score
- 1:22:57Speaker 2: and say, oh, Abdul Carter had a huge game, but
- 1:23:00Speaker 2: I'm expecting him to continue to pop and he just
- 1:23:04Speaker 2: look when you're trying to stack this board and we're
- 1:23:06Speaker 2: trying to figure out who are just the best overall
- 1:23:08Speaker 2: talents in this draft. I still think Travis Hunter is
- 1:23:12Speaker 2: on a planet of his own in terms of pure
- 1:23:14Speaker 2: talent on a football field, But I feel like Abdull
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: Carter is in that next thing you have to talk
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: about Abdul Carter, Yeah, Like you absolutely have to talk
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: about him. That being said, I thought Kelvin Banks was awesome.
- 1:23:26Speaker 2: I thought he was really really good. His run blocking
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: continues to be his best trait to me. He's a
- 1:23:32Speaker 2: people moving run blocker. It's not necessarily like dominant like J. C.
- 1:23:37Speaker 2: Latham man strength, you know, like it's not necessarily that.
- 1:23:40Speaker 2: But he's just very, very good in the running game.
- 1:23:43Speaker 2: And they do a lot of different things with Sark
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: in the run game and move their tackles a lot
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: and ask him to make some high level blocks that
- 1:23:50Speaker 2: he's gonna have to make at the NFL level, So
- 1:23:52Speaker 2: there's translatable stuff there. I look, I'm I'm weary of
- 1:23:57Speaker 2: the both these tackles for different reasons. You know, Campbell
- 1:24:00Speaker 2: obviously has the length issue, and Kelvin Banks I don't
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: think is quite as nimble as his feet in pass
- 1:24:05Speaker 2: protection as I would want my left tackle to be ideally.
- 1:24:09Speaker 2: But he's he's a talent, you know, he's a really
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: really good football player, and I'm starting to come around
- 1:24:16Speaker 2: to him if he plays like this the rest of
- 1:24:18Speaker 2: the playoff. Now, Will Campbell doesn't have this opportunity, right Like,
- 1:24:22Speaker 2: he doesn't have the opportunity to play in the playoff
- 1:24:24Speaker 2: and show out. But if Kelvin Banks plays this way
- 1:24:26Speaker 2: the rest of the playoffs, and I think there's gonna
- 1:24:28Speaker 2: be a lot of OT one conversations that he's going
- 1:24:31Speaker 2: to be the clear cut number one time and.
- 1:24:33Speaker 4: He's got So they have Arizona State, which is.
- 1:24:38Speaker 2: Uh, might as well be a double A team.
- 1:24:41Speaker 4: No, they have some NFL talented out that he's gonna
- 1:24:43Speaker 4: be going up again, so that that one doesn't help
- 1:24:45Speaker 4: him a ton. Assuming they win, though, they get Ohio
- 1:24:47Speaker 4: State of Oregon, and he is going to have a
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: chance to make some serious money. It's gonna be the
- 1:24:52Speaker 4: Cotton Bowl. Yeah, he's going to have a chance to
- 1:24:54Speaker 4: make some serious, serious money in that game. I don't
- 1:24:58Speaker 4: know if you want to talk about any of the
- 1:24:59Speaker 4: other top guys.
- 1:25:00Speaker 2: Yeah, I was just curious now because I obviously was
- 1:25:03Speaker 2: watching those two specifically. Is there anybody else that stood
- 1:25:06Speaker 2: out to you from the this weekend past weekend?
- 1:25:09Speaker 4: Uh, there weren't a ton of guys going at least
- 1:25:11Speaker 4: from the top of the board. There's mid level guys.
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: Tyler Warren had a good game against SMU. Yeah, you know,
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: I'm interested to see the Georgia. The Georgia pass rushers.
- 1:25:19Speaker 4: Obviously we didn't see them. They had the buye.
- 1:25:22Speaker 2: I would love to see Banks get another crack at Georgia.
- 1:25:25Speaker 2: I would too.
- 1:25:26Speaker 4: Yeah, here's kind of where my hot take was. This
- 1:25:28Speaker 4: is more league league take, but this could impact the
- 1:25:31Speaker 4: Patriots especially. We talked about what might happen if they
- 1:25:33Speaker 4: win another game in the draft, and it's a two
- 1:25:35Speaker 4: quarterback draft right now, right so you figure one two
- 1:25:38Speaker 4: when it's gonna be Giants Raiders if that honestly him
- 1:25:42Speaker 4: Ward's playing in the pop Tart Bowl, which is kind
- 1:25:44Speaker 4: of surprising you.
- 1:25:46Speaker 2: I do love the pop Tart pole, the pop.
- 1:25:50Speaker 4: Tart, It's an edible mascot. What's not to love?
- 1:25:53Speaker 2: What flavor are you picking?
- 1:25:54Speaker 4: So the MVP of the winning team, there's three flavors
- 1:25:57Speaker 4: this year, gets to pick the flavor.
- 1:25:59Speaker 2: Brown cinnamon, sugar. I'm a classic pop tart guy. I
- 1:26:02Speaker 2: I I do like s'mores a lot too, Like if
- 1:26:05Speaker 2: I had to, you know, Smores is a great pop tart,
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: But I'm a classic brown cinnamon and sugar pop tart guy.
- 1:26:12Speaker 4: This year, wild berry hot fudge Sunday, Come on, I
- 1:26:18Speaker 4: thought they were There was a oh, frosted cinnon roll
- 1:26:21Speaker 4: is the mystery flavor.
- 1:26:22Speaker 2: Of course, freaking gen z Man. They just gotta make
- 1:26:24Speaker 2: everything like, can we just go back to the classics?
- 1:26:27Speaker 2: Can we go back to brown cinnamon sugar? And can
- 1:26:29Speaker 2: we go get s'mores up there? Because frosted cinnamon role,
- 1:26:32Speaker 2: that's brown cinnamon sugar single. They have to call it
- 1:26:35Speaker 2: frosted cinnamon role now because brown cinnamon sugar is not
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: a cool enough name for it, so they yes, they
- 1:26:40Speaker 2: have to spice up the name.
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: That's what go back to the take. Let's say Patriots
- 1:26:44Speaker 4: win another game, right, they moved down a little bit?
- 1:26:46Speaker 2: Yep?
- 1:26:48Speaker 4: Could they still be in a position where teams trying
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: to move up for quarterback.
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: Or maybe even maybe even they.
- 1:26:54Speaker 4: End up like thirty four, a team's trying to move
- 1:26:56Speaker 4: up into a Will Levis where, Yeah, we think this
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: guy might be the guy, but we don't want to
- 1:26:59Speaker 4: bet our first round pipon us.
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: We're gonna get him the top of the second.
- 1:27:02Speaker 4: Yeah, how did you feel about Will Howard's performance on
- 1:27:07Speaker 4: Saturday Night?
- 1:27:08Speaker 2: Didn't love it? I love him as a prospect.
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: I thought he's pretty good. Ohio State's quarterbacks.
- 1:27:14Speaker 2: Are being yeah, yeah, yeah, he's had a really good
- 1:27:17Speaker 2: close to the season. I probably can't. He was awful
- 1:27:21Speaker 2: against Michigan.
- 1:27:22Speaker 4: He was terrible against Michigan.
- 1:27:24Speaker 2: But besides that, he played well down the stretch. Here's
- 1:27:26Speaker 2: my point. So using the big board that we use
- 1:27:29Speaker 2: right now, here are the guy that he is right
- 1:27:31Speaker 2: around or behind? Okay, tell me how many of these
- 1:27:35Speaker 2: guys you think he can realistically jump. Kyle McCord from Syracuse.
- 1:27:38Speaker 2: Oh yeah, definitely can jump.
- 1:27:40Speaker 4: Riley Leonard from Notre Dame.
- 1:27:41Speaker 2: Oh god, he's still geez. Yes, he's just glorified.
- 1:27:45Speaker 4: What's his name from Texas? He played for the Colts,
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: Cole McCoy. No, Sam Allinger?
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: Sam?
- 1:27:50Speaker 4: Okay, So that's who's behind him. This is on the
- 1:27:52Speaker 4: big board. Yeah, Jylen Milroe.
- 1:27:55Speaker 2: See, that was the one that I was gonna mention.
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: Yeah, because he's done the Hayes in the barn with him.
- 1:28:02Speaker 2: Yes, I doubt he's gonna play the game. I don't
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: think he's gonna right, he can't. Well, he won't play
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: in the bowl game. Now. You know Bryce Young played
- 1:28:09Speaker 2: in the Sugar Bowl. Yeah, a couple of years ago.
- 1:28:13Speaker 2: That was a huge game for Bryce Young. No, yeah,
- 1:28:16Speaker 2: that's true. He lit Kansas State on fire. He had
- 1:28:19Speaker 2: a huge, huge game that was probably the game that
- 1:28:21Speaker 2: made it consensus number one overall. Pick. Maybe Jayleen Milroe.
- 1:28:26Speaker 2: I don't know if he was on that team, like
- 1:28:28Speaker 2: as a backup or anything like that, but maybe Philip
- 1:28:32Speaker 2: Leaves follows a similar game plan. Milroe, though, I think,
- 1:28:36Speaker 2: is the one to me that I would maybe take
- 1:28:39Speaker 2: a chance on.
- 1:28:39Speaker 4: Jayalen Miller is playing the Bowl game.
- 1:28:41Speaker 2: Actually, Okay, I'm not surprised because I I guys have,
- 1:28:45Speaker 2: especially at that position, have really really helped their stock
- 1:28:48Speaker 2: in the in the bowl games.
- 1:28:49Speaker 4: All right, I'll give you a couple more here. Play
- 1:28:51Speaker 4: maybe Milroe Michigan's rematch of the National Championship.
- 1:28:54Speaker 2: I feel like that is in the because Michigan's defense
- 1:28:57Speaker 2: is still good and Michigan's defense still, like schematically is,
- 1:29:01Speaker 2: is creative and uh, you know, it can do some
- 1:29:03Speaker 2: different things that NFL teams do. So like you still
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: go into that game thinking that you're playing a pseudo
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: legit defense and if he puts up numbers, then that's
- 1:29:14Speaker 2: gonna help him.
- 1:29:14Speaker 4: Last year, Michigan Alabama's national championship. This year it is
- 1:29:17Speaker 4: the Relyaquest Bowl, formerly the Outback Bowl.
- 1:29:20Speaker 2: Okay, so you think.
- 1:29:20Speaker 4: Maybe Will Howard, now there's no more outa anymore, maybe
- 1:29:24Speaker 4: Jalen Mirrow finishes that. I know, you usuld to get
- 1:29:25Speaker 4: free blooming onions like that. Carson, I think without an elbow.
- 1:29:31Speaker 2: I think Carson best going on draft, I think so yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:35Speaker 4: Quin yours, quin yours or Will Howard quin yours?
- 1:29:41Speaker 2: Really? You know, I don't like quin yours. I want
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: just a.
- 1:29:44Speaker 4: More physically built so Will Howard six four to two
- 1:29:49Speaker 4: thirty five.
- 1:29:50Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know. Man, he played awful against Michigan
- 1:29:53Speaker 2: and I can't get that out of my head. All right.
- 1:29:55Speaker 4: That's the thing about the playoffs against Oregon. I organize
- 1:29:58Speaker 4: a very good defense.
- 1:29:59Speaker 2: I still feel like, and I understand that. You know,
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: in hindsight, that was a really talented Texas offense last year. Yeah,
- 1:30:06Speaker 2: but really, when you think about it, like, it's not
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: like Xavier Worthy or eighty Mitchell's really lit the world
- 1:30:11Speaker 2: on fire on the NFL either, you know what I mean?
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: So you could go both ways with that. And I
- 1:30:15Speaker 2: do think that some teams are eight team will convince themselves,
- 1:30:18Speaker 2: not like top ten pick or anything, but I think
- 1:30:21Speaker 2: eight team will convince themselves that they can get last
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: year's Quene Wars right right.
- 1:30:25Speaker 4: And then the last one ahead of him is Jackson Dark.
- 1:30:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Jackson I feel like is more of like a
- 1:30:31Speaker 2: folk hero than he is a quarterback across. That is
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: a great way to put it. He's a college quarterback.
- 1:30:36Speaker 4: Yeah, So all right, maybe Jalen Milroe maybe put in yours.
- 1:30:39Speaker 4: I will say, Will Howard is going to Senior Bowl. Okay,
- 1:30:42Speaker 4: so we will have that one of Maybe it's yours,
- 1:30:45Speaker 4: then maybe it's Howard, maybe it's Milroe in the Relyaquest Bowl.
- 1:30:49Speaker 4: I'm still not locking in this being a two quarterback draft.
- 1:30:52Speaker 4: If Will Howard plays well in this playoff, and that's
- 1:30:54Speaker 4: the thing for I guess it is true for you
- 1:30:56Speaker 4: or to yours too. But you look at it. What
- 1:30:58Speaker 4: Will Howard will have had to have done? Blown out
- 1:31:01Speaker 4: Tennessee and he put up numbers against an SEC defense
- 1:31:05Speaker 4: twenty four to twenty nine, three hundred eleven yards.
- 1:31:07Speaker 2: Two touchdowns.
- 1:31:08Speaker 4: He will have blown out in SEC defense. He will
- 1:31:11Speaker 4: have beat the number one team in the country in Oregon,
- 1:31:13Speaker 4: which is another number one defense, another top defense. Yeah,
- 1:31:16Speaker 4: all odds are unless Arizona State pulls off something spectacular,
- 1:31:19Speaker 4: he'll beat Texas. That'll be his second SEC win and
- 1:31:22Speaker 4: then if he gets one more win, now he gets
- 1:31:24Speaker 4: throw that national champion tag on top of it. I'm
- 1:31:26Speaker 4: not saying that he's gonna be a great NFL quarterback,
- 1:31:29Speaker 4: but isn't that kind of resume teams are looking for
- 1:31:32Speaker 4: when they draft.
- 1:31:32Speaker 2: The guy sounds JJ McCarthy, JJ.
- 1:31:35Speaker 4: McCarthy, Jac Jones. Yeah, and maybe that's who he is
- 1:31:38Speaker 4: in the NFL, but we know teams make wrong picks
- 1:31:41Speaker 4: all the time. So I just I think Will Howard
- 1:31:44Speaker 4: has some room to rise, which could be and maybe
- 1:31:47Speaker 4: Jalen Milroe does too. We can throw them this take.
- 1:31:49Speaker 4: That is a factor when we talk about if the
- 1:31:52Speaker 4: Patriots win another game where their pick is, because maybe
- 1:31:54Speaker 4: there's a third quarterback that's not going third like last
- 1:31:57Speaker 4: year one, two, three, but maybe fifth, sixth, seventh, the
- 1:31:59Speaker 4: team's moving up to take them.
- 1:32:01Speaker 2: So I like Milroe a little bit, and I don't
- 1:32:03Speaker 2: meet the stereotype, but like there's obviously the Jalen Hurts thing. Yeah,
- 1:32:07Speaker 2: and I see some of that comparison with with with Milroe.
- 1:32:11Speaker 2: I also think that as a passer he got better
- 1:32:14Speaker 2: this year.
- 1:32:14Speaker 4: He did get much better.
- 1:32:16Speaker 2: Yeah, And there's a lot of athleticism there. There's a
- 1:32:19Speaker 2: lot of arm talent there, uh there, if you build
- 1:32:22Speaker 2: it like the Eagles have built it for Hurts and
- 1:32:25Speaker 2: you built it a certain way. I believe that that
- 1:32:28Speaker 2: Jalen Milroe could potentially be a starting quarterback in the NFL.
- 1:32:32Speaker 2: But is that enough for him to go in the
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: first round. I don't know, but it's probably enough for
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: him to go in the second, right, Like.
- 1:32:40Speaker 4: And look, it's too easy for these things, but we
- 1:32:41Speaker 4: like this database. Yeah, Dave Jylen Miller going six overall?
- 1:32:45Speaker 2: Right now? Oh yeah, no, I mean that's not happening
- 1:32:47Speaker 2: unless he I know, I can't. He would have to
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: light up the bowl game, light up the pre draft
- 1:32:52Speaker 2: process like that would would He is.
- 1:32:54Speaker 4: Going to be impressive, and he's one of the few
- 1:32:56Speaker 4: guys like usually top quarterbacks don't do stuff.
- 1:32:59Speaker 2: Yeah, I wouldn't be surprized if he.
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: Runs at the combine and throws and does the whole
- 1:33:03Speaker 4: because he's going to dominate the combine.
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: Yeah, that's why that's why I like him. You know,
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: I could he be sort of like and again I
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: don't mean the stereotype, but like, could he be sort
- 1:33:13Speaker 2: of like an Anthony Richardson. Jalen hurts like type of process.
- 1:33:16Speaker 2: Not that big though he's not as big as Richardson. No,
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: he's not even as like he's hurts his short shorter right,
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: which hurts like two which like Milro's taller.
- 1:33:26Speaker 4: He's listening to two twenty. Wow, I would not have
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: guessed that I run around.
- 1:33:30Speaker 2: Yeah. I think he's kind of built a little bit
- 1:33:32Speaker 2: like Jalen Hurts. All I doesn't look like it. But yeah,
- 1:33:35Speaker 2: all right, let's take these phone calls and I want
- 1:33:38Speaker 2: to talk a little bit Chargers before we wrap up
- 1:33:40Speaker 2: the show. Here. Justin is in North Carolina. What's up? Justin?
- 1:33:44Speaker 5: I didn't know at first, you know, I was like, hey, how.
- 1:33:46Speaker 2: Do you going good? How are you?
- 1:33:49Speaker 5: I'm good. My problem is that after they had back
- 1:33:54Speaker 5: such a terrible game, and then they had such a
- 1:33:58Speaker 5: good day, then they had such a good game. It's
- 1:34:02Speaker 5: like everybody was really complaining Drake May. Everybody would say,
- 1:34:08Speaker 5: Drake May just stops, you know, ninety Drake May lost
- 1:34:12Speaker 5: the game, and and then and then there's saying, you
- 1:34:19Speaker 5: know that Ramondre was, you know, got our hands and
- 1:34:25Speaker 5: all that kind of stuff.
- 1:34:26Speaker 2: It means he did run good.
- 1:34:27Speaker 5: I mean he bumbled once and then in that gatteral play,
- 1:34:31Speaker 5: which was property because they were in the back of
- 1:34:33Speaker 5: the end zone. It's just that they were just and
- 1:34:36Speaker 5: now they're ready to trade them. I mean, I think
- 1:34:39Speaker 5: he played a better game. He made more yards and
- 1:34:42Speaker 5: played and played a better game as far as running
- 1:34:46Speaker 5: than he has this all year. And you know, now,
- 1:34:52Speaker 5: I know it's a problem that it's fumble, but gifts
- 1:34:55Speaker 5: the fumble as well, and I just I just now
- 1:35:00Speaker 5: and if they had to even though they did not win,
- 1:35:03Speaker 5: which whoever, I know, that's what a lot of people wanted.
- 1:35:06Speaker 5: They played so good against the Bill that that took
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: away from the m v P status of Josh Allen.
- 1:35:17Speaker 5: So I mean, if they did do good, they did
- 1:35:21Speaker 5: show a good front. And I just don't understand why
- 1:35:24Speaker 5: they don't. I guess I can see they just don't
- 1:35:26Speaker 5: want to be over overly confident, because it's all it's
- 1:35:30Speaker 5: get up and down. I just I just want to
- 1:35:33Speaker 5: give him a little break, you know.
- 1:35:36Speaker 2: Yeah, that's that's fair. Just yeah, yes, I know this.
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: For the segment she's talking about on the Sports Ub,
- 1:35:41Speaker 4: Matt McCarthy did the lightning round where he just had
- 1:35:43Speaker 4: as many people calling as possible, did Drake May cost
- 1:35:46Speaker 4: Patriots the game? Yes or no? He said yes. They
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: were like, I think it was like twenty two to
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: three callers saying no. So he just got put in
- 1:35:54Speaker 4: his place.
- 1:35:55Speaker 2: That's a that's a very Matt McCarthy thing to do,
- 1:36:00Speaker 2: which I say with all due respect, he just likes
- 1:36:02Speaker 2: to poke the bear a little bit. Oh yeah, yeah,
- 1:36:04Speaker 2: that's absolutely But I think the biggest thing to me
- 1:36:08Speaker 2: with Drake May, by the.
- 1:36:09Speaker 4: Way Patriots of World Marcus Jones out Ben Brown is
- 1:36:12Speaker 4: one of eleven that are questioned.
- 1:36:14Speaker 2: Yes, so Ben Brown still has a chance in the protocol,
- 1:36:16Speaker 2: which is going to be tough. This regime, though, has
- 1:36:18Speaker 2: done it right. Drake May cleared protocol.
- 1:36:21Speaker 4: Remember there's like a not loophole, but it's easier for
- 1:36:24Speaker 4: quarterbacks to get out of the protocol.
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: Yeah. I also wonder too, you know, if Cold Strange
- 1:36:29Speaker 2: is ready, you probably want to see Cole Strange at
- 1:36:32Speaker 2: some point play this year, and this is probably the
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: opportunity to do it. Like Ben Brown doesn't deserve to
- 1:36:38Speaker 2: get bench based off of the tape, like he played
- 1:36:40Speaker 2: pretty well in this game last week. Besides the snaps
- 1:36:43Speaker 2: which have continued been an issue. That's why I was
- 1:36:45Speaker 2: a little bit surprised that it was a concussion because
- 1:36:48Speaker 2: it's two weeks in a row now that he's had
- 1:36:49Speaker 2: some snapping issues, and I actually thought that maybe there
- 1:36:52Speaker 2: was something physically, you know, like an ailment, like a
- 1:36:55Speaker 2: core issue, or like an upper body type injury that
- 1:36:58Speaker 2: or was causing it. But it's a concussion, so it
- 1:37:02Speaker 2: still has a chance to play. Back to Justina's point, though,
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: I think the biggest thing with Drake May there's so
- 1:37:09Speaker 2: much good on the film with him, there's so much good,
- 1:37:12Speaker 2: you know, a lot of really great, high level throws.
- 1:37:15Speaker 2: I think he sees space in the defense and reads
- 1:37:17Speaker 2: zone coverage extremely well, just kind of knows where the
- 1:37:20Speaker 2: voids are going to be and where the pockets are
- 1:37:22Speaker 2: going to be. And he has great ball placement against
- 1:37:24Speaker 2: man coverage for the most part, which is how you
- 1:37:26Speaker 2: beat man right. You got to put the ball in
- 1:37:28Speaker 2: a place away from the defender for the receiver to
- 1:37:31Speaker 2: make the catch. I thought the early third down to
- 1:37:34Speaker 2: Hunter Henry was a perfect example of that. That's pretty
- 1:37:36Speaker 2: good coverage. That is a muddied pocket. There's pressure on
- 1:37:39Speaker 2: him in that pocket. He stands in that pocket, and
- 1:37:42Speaker 2: he puts the ball on Henry and makes the play,
- 1:37:44Speaker 2: and they move the chains and they stay on the field.
- 1:37:46Speaker 2: So there's a lot of great things. I think, you
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: know what we're all looking for. One this fan base,
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: and understandably so has some Mac Jones rookie season PTSD,
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: right that just exists within this fan base. We saw
- 1:37:58Speaker 2: a quarterback, a young quarterback not too long ago, played
- 1:38:02Speaker 2: some really good football as a rookie, and then it
- 1:38:04Speaker 2: completely fell off after that. So there are certain people
- 1:38:07Speaker 2: that are just setting themselves up for failure right like
- 1:38:10Speaker 2: that are trying to protect their own feelings from that. Again,
- 1:38:14Speaker 2: the second thing is is that it's fair to say
- 1:38:16Speaker 2: they're still not winning these games that Drake May is
- 1:38:18Speaker 2: playing it. Yeah, he has won from wire to wire.
- 1:38:21Speaker 2: He's won one game against the Bears since he took
- 1:38:25Speaker 2: over as the starter, So just where can he improve?
- 1:38:28Speaker 2: It's not everyone sees it, like I think, all, well, everyone,
- 1:38:31Speaker 2: you can't deny that everyone sees the talent like that
- 1:38:33Speaker 2: is undeniable that this guy is a franchise quarterback talent.
- 1:38:38Speaker 2: But now it's on the Patriots and on this organization
- 1:38:41Speaker 2: as a whole to develop that talent, it's to get
- 1:38:44Speaker 2: him developed. It's to get the situation around him to develop.
- 1:38:47Speaker 2: It's to get him with the right coaches, the right receivers.
- 1:38:49Speaker 2: I get him an offensive line. Like, there's a lot
- 1:38:51Speaker 2: that goes into that, and that's where we're at. We've
- 1:38:54Speaker 2: checked the box of is Drake may a starting quarterback
- 1:38:58Speaker 2: in the NFL? I think the physical talent checks that
- 1:39:00Speaker 2: box for you. Now the question is is you know,
- 1:39:03Speaker 2: can he be better? Right? Can he be even better
- 1:39:06Speaker 2: than this? I'll touch on one other thing.
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: She said, Yeah, the Patriots ended Josh Allen's MVP chanswer
- 1:39:10Speaker 4: impact his MVP chances? Who's your MVP?
- 1:39:13Speaker 2: Evan? He was damn good yesterday, Lamar. You know this
- 1:39:18Speaker 2: is truly like deciding. I bet you this is how
- 1:39:21Speaker 2: parents feel about deciding between children, because I you know,
- 1:39:25Speaker 2: I love both guys. Oh, come on, I probably give
- 1:39:33Speaker 2: it to Josh Allen. Still cut really yeah, first.
- 1:39:36Speaker 4: Off, what he did against this Patriots defense.
- 1:39:39Speaker 2: Second of all, okay, that's such. Don't don't be recency biased,
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: don't don't fine, don't look at what.
- 1:39:45Speaker 4: He did against the Texans and look at what Lamar
- 1:39:47Speaker 4: did against Texan.
- 1:39:48Speaker 2: Do you remember the reaction after that Texans game, because
- 1:39:50Speaker 2: this is also another version of like, oh when did
- 1:39:53Speaker 2: they play Tennessee October? Like, okay, so he played the
- 1:39:56Speaker 2: Texans four months ago and then this Texans team played
- 1:39:59Speaker 2: Lamar yesterday Like those are not it's not the same.
- 1:40:03Speaker 2: And Lamar has been awesome Lamar, I have no doubt
- 1:40:07Speaker 2: about that. I do wonder. Look what it comes down
- 1:40:11Speaker 2: to when I'm evaluating m VP, and maybe this is
- 1:40:15Speaker 2: an argument for Lamar and that I'm making without me knowing.
- 1:40:18Speaker 2: It's basically which if you took the player off the team,
- 1:40:20Speaker 2: how much worse would they get? Right like that? That's
- 1:40:23Speaker 2: what we're talking about here. My thing with Lamar, and
- 1:40:28Speaker 2: this is one of your guys, like Derrick Henry is
- 1:40:30Speaker 2: there now and he's had a great scene now, Lamar
- 1:40:32Speaker 2: is letting him do a lot of it right like that.
- 1:40:34Speaker 2: It's a lot of it is because of Lamar that
- 1:40:36Speaker 2: Derek Henry has been there.
- 1:40:38Speaker 4: Lamar still has like forty total touchdowns.
- 1:40:40Speaker 2: Yeah, he's like forty four to four in terms of
- 1:40:43Speaker 2: touchdowns interceptions right now.
- 1:40:45Speaker 4: Really, really Burrow should be in the conversation too, but
- 1:40:47Speaker 4: the Bengals just suck. Yeah, But because if you talk
- 1:40:49Speaker 4: about take him off the team. Whose team gets worse,
- 1:40:52Speaker 4: it's Joe Burrow. I just the Bengals seems nothing without him.
- 1:40:55Speaker 2: Watching the Bills up close, and it was a bad
- 1:40:57Speaker 2: I put him on the downs list. It was a
- 1:40:59Speaker 2: bad Josh Allen game, There's no doubt about that. But
- 1:41:01Speaker 2: watching the Bills up close, Josh Allen does not have
- 1:41:07Speaker 2: a great supporting cast. He has a good supporting cast,
- 1:41:11Speaker 2: but those receivers are nothing special. Like it's washed Amari Cooper,
- 1:41:16Speaker 2: it's Khalil Shakiro, who's a really good slot receiver, but
- 1:41:19Speaker 2: that's what he is, right, And it's Keon Coleman, who
- 1:41:22Speaker 2: you know how I feel about Keon Coleman. And I
- 1:41:25Speaker 2: said it at the time when they drafted Dalton Kinkaid,
- 1:41:28Speaker 2: Dalond Kinkaid was that was a bad draft pick in
- 1:41:31Speaker 2: my mind. Is his career so far has been exactly
- 1:41:34Speaker 2: like a lot of tight ends like early in the draft,
- 1:41:37Speaker 2: aar like not all of them are gonna be brock Bowers, right,
- 1:41:40Speaker 2: Like he's not brock Bowers. Yeah, And Dalton kin Kid
- 1:41:43Speaker 2: has like I think, like four hundred and fifty five
- 1:41:45Speaker 2: hundred yards this year. In year two had about the
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: same last year, Like, that's not that's not a ton.
- 1:41:52Speaker 2: That's not a ton.
- 1:41:53Speaker 4: How about the the strength schedule. Josh Allen's playing the afcast,
- 1:41:58Speaker 4: He's playing.
- 1:41:59Speaker 2: I'm not gonna if they give it to Lamar Jackson, Like,
- 1:42:01Speaker 2: I'm not gonna argue, Like Lamar Jackson's awesome, right, if
- 1:42:04Speaker 2: they give it to Lamar Jackson, I'm not gonna argue.
- 1:42:06Speaker 2: It's probably a little bit of voter fatigue. And we
- 1:42:08Speaker 2: could look back on this and it's like, you know,
- 1:42:10Speaker 2: Joel Embiid's MVP instead of Nikola Jokic, Like Jokich was
- 1:42:14Speaker 2: probably the MVP of the league.
- 1:42:15Speaker 4: Well, it's it's that thing where like we dealt with
- 1:42:18Speaker 4: this for Brady for years. You win a couple MVPs,
- 1:42:20Speaker 4: and now it's not just you have to be the
- 1:42:22Speaker 4: best player in the league. You have to be better
- 1:42:24Speaker 4: than your average year at being said Josh Allen winning
- 1:42:27Speaker 4: it to your point about Jokic, Like I've compared the
- 1:42:30Speaker 4: Bills to the Sixers for a long time. This would
- 1:42:32Speaker 4: do the fraudulent Joelle and beat MVP.
- 1:42:35Speaker 2: It would be very Sixers esque. His numbers, Lamar's numbers
- 1:42:39Speaker 2: this year are better than they were last year. Last
- 1:42:42Speaker 2: year though, probably was like a water down year for MVP.
- 1:42:46Speaker 2: It was really you know, unless he wanted to give
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: it to like Christian McCaffrey, Like there wasn't a whole
- 1:42:50Speaker 2: lot of options outside of the Mamar Jackson fel SA,
- 1:42:53Speaker 2: I know how you feel. But in the conversation, he's
- 1:42:56Speaker 2: in the top five, like he just deserves votes. Yeah,
- 1:42:58Speaker 2: but he doesn't. He's not gonna win it. He shouldn't
- 1:43:00Speaker 2: win it.
- 1:43:01Speaker 4: Who whose team is forget? Take him off the team?
- 1:43:03Speaker 4: Which team becomes worse?
- 1:43:04Speaker 2: Who?
- 1:43:05Speaker 4: Which team is a better team? Which team would you
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: less want to play? The Ravens or the Bills?
- 1:43:11Speaker 2: I don't know. It's so such recency biased because we
- 1:43:14Speaker 2: both we just watched the Bills kind of be in
- 1:43:16Speaker 2: a game with the Patriots, and then we just watched
- 1:43:18Speaker 2: the Ravens wax the text.
- 1:43:19Speaker 4: I know the Bills have a better record that Ravens team.
- 1:43:21Speaker 4: I think they're like the danger team. That's the team
- 1:43:24Speaker 4: you do not want to see going to the playoffs.
- 1:43:26Speaker 2: I really hope Lamar Jackson wins the Super Bowl. I
- 1:43:28Speaker 2: would love to see Lamar Jackson win a Super so
- 1:43:31Speaker 2: I would not like to see the Bills winning.
- 1:43:33Speaker 4: That is one of the few on your yeah you
- 1:43:35Speaker 4: do no, yeah, do you want Josh to win one?
- 1:43:37Speaker 2: So we'll shut up? No, No, I would be perfectly
- 1:43:41Speaker 2: content with Josh Allen being a more enjoyable Joel Embiid
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: like same resume, but just.
- 1:43:47Speaker 4: Not you know what, you know what I want for
- 1:43:51Speaker 4: Josh Allen. And this is gonna surprise some people. But again,
- 1:43:54Speaker 4: it's nobody understands what my real take is.
- 1:43:56Speaker 2: Oh my god, that's because you're really like when you
- 1:43:58Speaker 2: say nobody understands your real take, it means you're doing
- 1:44:00Speaker 2: a bad job. No, I'm all right.
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: I've tried to explain a number of times. I want
- 1:44:04Speaker 4: Josh Allen to be Matthew Stafford. I want him to
- 1:44:07Speaker 4: go win somewhere else. I would love to see Josh Allen.
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: Win a super Bowl and not Buffalo. Yeah, that's fair,
- 1:44:12Speaker 2: that's fine. I'm good with that. I can't the Bills
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: can't win a super Bowl, and we're never gonna be
- 1:44:16Speaker 2: on the same page about Coyle Shanahan.
- 1:44:17Speaker 4: But he's not gonna win it this year, so you
- 1:44:18Speaker 4: don't have to deal with him blowing the Super Bowl
- 1:44:20Speaker 4: late again.
- 1:44:21Speaker 2: Congratulations all right, Kendall is in North Carolina. What's we're
- 1:44:25Speaker 2: big in North Carolina? Told me what, Kendall is not
- 1:44:28Speaker 2: gonna win. It's the Bill Belichick effect. It's the Drake
- 1:44:30Speaker 2: Bill Belichick effect. Good good.
- 1:44:34Speaker 6: Of course was for and Alex.
- 1:44:37Speaker 5: If we do win another game and whatnot? Where would
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: you all draft Luther Burden? That would you draft him
- 1:44:42Speaker 5: in the top pano maybe outside top?
- 1:44:45Speaker 11: And I take it up.
- 1:44:46Speaker 2: Oh that's a good question, thanks Kendall. Yeah, because you
- 1:44:49Speaker 2: good quick. We did this the other week. You raved
- 1:44:51Speaker 2: about Luthor.
- 1:44:52Speaker 4: You're ruling about Luthor Burden, and then you basically ended
- 1:44:56Speaker 4: the segment saying, and.
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: He's the third best receiver in the draft. I didn't
- 1:44:59Speaker 2: say third is second? Where Drift Hunter?
- 1:45:03Speaker 5: Uh?
- 1:45:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I guess. But I'm I'm sort of coming around
- 1:45:07Speaker 2: just to listen to some of the reporting out there
- 1:45:09Speaker 2: by the insiders. It definitely does seem like jams around
- 1:45:12Speaker 2: the league. Think Travis Hunters is going to say, what
- 1:45:14Speaker 2: do you make of that? Jay Glazer report? Probably pretty accurate.
- 1:45:17Speaker 2: So all right, so you you you drooled over Luthor Burden.
- 1:45:20Speaker 2: You talked about how tentative you were on Tet McMillan.
- 1:45:23Speaker 2: But then he said, but Tet mcmill is my wide
- 1:45:25Speaker 2: receiver one. I tried not to let my stylistic biases
- 1:45:30Speaker 2: creep into my rankings too much, because I always have
- 1:45:37Speaker 2: this sort of back and forth internally with myself about
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: how to treat the draft in terms of rankings, Like
- 1:45:42Speaker 2: am I ranking as if I was Elliott Wolf? Or
- 1:45:45Speaker 2: am I just ranking to be right about the players?
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 1:45:48Speaker 5: Like?
- 1:45:49Speaker 2: Am I ranking it as if I am just a
- 1:45:51Speaker 2: generic NFL football team and just who's the best football player?
- 1:45:54Speaker 2: Like if I'm ranking it with just who's the best
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: football players? Like I try to take my biases of
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: this guy's just not really my cup of tea out
- 1:46:04Speaker 2: of it unless I'm really convicted that, like Quinton Johnson,
- 1:46:07Speaker 2: Like I just did not see it with Quinton Johnston,
- 1:46:10Speaker 2: and so I wasn't gonna allow myself to rank him,
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: you know, highly, because of that. But with Ted McMillan,
- 1:46:16Speaker 2: I see what everybody else sees. It's just I wouldn't
- 1:46:18Speaker 2: build my offense around a player like that, Okay, I
- 1:46:21Speaker 2: would build my offense around to Luther Burden. Are you
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: taking Luther? I think he's a top twenty pick in
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: this draft. Top twenty.
- 1:46:28Speaker 4: Okay, so even if the Patriots win is both games, Yeah,
- 1:46:32Speaker 4: it's still probably a trade down situation for you.
- 1:46:34Speaker 2: Yeah, and look, I would love if because we had
- 1:46:37Speaker 2: a caller. I think it was on Peu. Like, I
- 1:46:40Speaker 2: would love if they could be in a situation where
- 1:46:42Speaker 2: they trade back up from the top of the second
- 1:46:45Speaker 2: round to grab a guy like Luther Burden. I just
- 1:46:47Speaker 2: don't think he's gonna fall that far.
- 1:46:48Speaker 4: So all right, let me ask you if you say
- 1:46:49Speaker 4: his top twenty pick. Yeah, let's say in this draft,
- 1:46:52Speaker 4: like in this draft, yep, yep, yep. Yeah, let's say
- 1:46:55Speaker 4: I'm looking at.
- 1:46:55Speaker 2: The teams here. Oh, here's a good one.
- 1:46:58Speaker 4: Okay, the Bengals at fourteen, they lose t Higgins. They
- 1:47:03Speaker 4: need to add juice for Joe Burrow. Yeah, you know,
- 1:47:06Speaker 4: you get in Tell the Bengals are taking Luther Burden
- 1:47:09Speaker 4: at fourteen? Would you take him somewhere ten through thirteen?
- 1:47:14Speaker 2: I think about that. Yeah, I would know that, like,
- 1:47:17Speaker 2: all right, we're not gonna get him if we wait
- 1:47:18Speaker 2: till eighteen nineteen twenty. Yeah, I would. I would. I
- 1:47:21Speaker 2: I in this draft in particular now, and that might
- 1:47:27Speaker 2: be trade down trade. Does the board does the board
- 1:47:30Speaker 2: just for the fact that it's not a great receiver class.
- 1:47:34Speaker 2: And well that's what I'm saying. So, like a couple
- 1:47:36Speaker 2: of years ago, right when Jay Flowers and Jackson Smith
- 1:47:38Speaker 2: and Jigba and Jordan Addison came out, they had the
- 1:47:41Speaker 2: league adjusted for the fact that it wasn't Malik Neighbors,
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: Marvin Harrison Junior and Romadonza right like they got drafted
- 1:47:47Speaker 2: in the twenties. Yeah, I think they all went with
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: four straight picks if I'm not mistaken. Yeah, in twenty
- 1:47:52Speaker 2: twenty two or twenty three. Which draft was that? Twenty three,
- 1:47:56Speaker 2: twenty three? Yep, yeah, sorry, twenty three, So Zay Flower,
- 1:47:58Speaker 2: it was JSN, Zay Flowers, Addison, Quentin Johnson I think
- 1:48:02Speaker 2: in that order, and they went with four picks in
- 1:48:05Speaker 2: a row or like four or five picks or something
- 1:48:07Speaker 2: like that.
- 1:48:07Speaker 4: It was four picks in a row, js N, Johnston, Flowers, Addison.
- 1:48:10Speaker 2: Oh okay, I thought Flowers went ahead of Johnson for
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: some reason. No idiots, Uh, anyways, that man him on
- 1:48:16Speaker 2: this Chargers team. Yeah, I mean whatever, Yeah, just draft
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: stiff receivers. It's fine. So you look at this draft,
- 1:48:25Speaker 2: I could I see that happening with Luther Burden, the
- 1:48:29Speaker 2: kid from Ohiose Sate to BUCA. Right, like those types
- 1:48:31Speaker 2: of players, you know, some of the guys, you know,
- 1:48:33Speaker 2: Tory Horton or the kid from Texas, you know, like
- 1:48:37Speaker 2: those guys. I could see that happening that the league
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: is like in other years, this guy, we have to
- 1:48:43Speaker 2: take the guy where he's worth on the board. Now
- 1:48:45Speaker 2: in mis draft, I think Luther Burden could be in
- 1:48:48Speaker 2: the top fifteen because he's the second best receiver in
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: the draft.
- 1:48:51Speaker 4: And the other thing is so in that draft, the
- 1:48:53Speaker 4: kind of the consensus was in none of those guys
- 1:48:56Speaker 4: were top picks. Yeah, so they fell. This one's a
- 1:48:59Speaker 4: little different because bias aside. Is Ted McMillan going to
- 1:49:04Speaker 4: go in the top six picks?
- 1:49:05Speaker 2: I think he's top ten at least, right, Yeah, he's
- 1:49:07Speaker 2: gonna ten. Ten is his floor? Right? Right? Yeah, he's
- 1:49:10Speaker 2: gonna go. And now it's well, we got to get
- 1:49:14Speaker 2: the next receiver.
- 1:49:15Speaker 4: We need a receiver. So maybe Burden is a twenty
- 1:49:18Speaker 4: to twenty five pick. But are are we really going
- 1:49:23Speaker 4: to see in the first round of the draft where
- 1:49:24Speaker 4: wide receivers go so often? Are fifteen picks going to
- 1:49:28Speaker 4: go without a wide receiver going. When's the last time? Honestly, well,
- 1:49:32Speaker 4: I guess that year that got to the twenties. But
- 1:49:34Speaker 4: after the first receiver, when's the last time we went
- 1:49:36Speaker 4: fifteen picks in the first round without another wide receiver taken?
- 1:49:41Speaker 4: They always go in bunches.
- 1:49:43Speaker 2: Yeah, all right.
- 1:49:44Speaker 4: Twenty twenty two is another example. You had five wide
- 1:49:47Speaker 4: receivers going in the first round. Right, six wide receivers
- 1:49:49Speaker 4: go in the first round. They went in the span
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: of ten picks. Drake London went eighth, Treylon Burks went eighteenth. Yeah,
- 1:49:56Speaker 4: so you had same thing at twenty twenty one. A
- 1:49:58Speaker 4: bunch of wide receivers went five, six, ten, and then
- 1:50:02Speaker 4: you jumped to twenty in twenty seven. So there was
- 1:50:04Speaker 4: a little bit of a jump there. But it's like
- 1:50:06Speaker 4: McMillan's gonna go and teams unless there's a team that
- 1:50:09Speaker 4: fused Hunter as a wide receiver, and maybe that exkews it.
- 1:50:11Speaker 4: But this is going to be so hard to read
- 1:50:13Speaker 4: the board this year. Travis Hunter, it's gonna make it.
- 1:50:15Speaker 4: I'm realizing, like in real time he's good off he
- 1:50:18Speaker 4: makes the draft.
- 1:50:18Speaker 2: No, I mean, he's going to be a top five pick.
- 1:50:20Speaker 4: So I, well, but the trickle down, right.
- 1:50:23Speaker 2: Yeah, But I still feel like Teed McMillan is still
- 1:50:25Speaker 2: a top ten pick even if the team treats Travis Hunters.
- 1:50:28Speaker 4: Sure, but no, But I mean it's like, if Travis
- 1:50:30Speaker 4: hunter goes, are more teams panicking about the corners going
- 1:50:34Speaker 4: early or more teams panicking about the receivers going early corners?
- 1:50:37Speaker 2: I think that because it's really just him and Will Johnson.
- 1:50:39Speaker 4: Okay, so, but the point being like, I don't think
- 1:50:42Speaker 4: team is gonna wait around that long to take the
- 1:50:44Speaker 4: second receiver.
- 1:50:45Speaker 2: Yeah, and receivers like Luther Burden that have that kind
- 1:50:49Speaker 2: of explosiveness and that kind of big playability really at
- 1:50:52Speaker 2: all three levels where you can like scheme touch him
- 1:50:55Speaker 2: or you can throw the ball on a vertical down
- 1:50:56Speaker 2: the field. Like those types of guys don't last long
- 1:50:58Speaker 2: in the NFL draft.
- 1:50:59Speaker 4: I still think that Chiefs are going to give up
- 1:51:00Speaker 4: a ton to move up and get him to.
- 1:51:02Speaker 2: Be a good pick. All right, Eldred is in North Carolina?
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: What's up, Eldred? There? It is Christmas? Thank you?
- 1:51:13Speaker 8: Yeah, yes, sir, I'm kind of kind of count of
- 1:51:18Speaker 8: fun a little bit with I Like, he's got this burnspeed.
- 1:51:26Speaker 8: But Travis huntert y'all wouldn't try to make him a
- 1:51:28Speaker 8: wide receiver instead of a corner first.
- 1:51:32Speaker 2: Yeah, we've talked about that in the past, Eldred and
- 1:51:35Speaker 2: I definitely would think about it. You know, if that's
- 1:51:38Speaker 2: the side of the ball that he wants to play
- 1:51:40Speaker 2: and he's more committed to being a receiver, I'm not
- 1:51:43Speaker 2: gonna tell him that he can't be right like it's
- 1:51:45Speaker 2: it's that sort of thing to me.
- 1:51:46Speaker 4: I wouldn't play him both ways if I think, if
- 1:51:49Speaker 4: you're the Patriots, it makes much more sense if you're
- 1:51:51Speaker 4: gonna draft him, to draft him as a receiver. And
- 1:51:53Speaker 4: we kind of talked to him about him being like
- 1:51:55Speaker 4: a third down corner. Yeah, maybe or a spot corner.
- 1:51:59Speaker 4: But based on all the reporting right now, it sounds
- 1:52:02Speaker 4: like the majority of the teams see him as a cornerback.
- 1:52:05Speaker 4: I understand why. I think his ceiling is higher both.
- 1:52:08Speaker 4: I think his football ceiling. I think his caliber of
- 1:52:10Speaker 4: a players hires a corner, And honestly, if I'm advising him,
- 1:52:14Speaker 4: I think he makes more money as a corner in.
- 1:52:16Speaker 2: The NFL too. That's the biggest thing to so the
- 1:52:18Speaker 2: wide receiver contract, the big wide receiver contract is worth
- 1:52:22Speaker 2: more in the biggest corner contract.
- 1:52:23Speaker 4: But you look at the way he's built. He's gonna
- 1:52:26Speaker 4: get one, maybe two big contracts as a receiver. He
- 1:52:30Speaker 4: might get three as a corner. Like he'll last a
- 1:52:32Speaker 4: lot longer as a corner. I think he makes more money,
- 1:52:35Speaker 4: honestly if he plays corner than receiver.
- 1:52:38Speaker 8: Okay, one more, one more question. Let y'all go, yeah,
- 1:52:41Speaker 8: and I take it off there. Do you trust Wolf
- 1:52:44Speaker 8: to make the right move? I didn't trust them last year.
- 1:52:47Speaker 8: I don't think I trust him this year.
- 1:52:50Speaker 2: Thanks Eldred, Yeah, thank you. Love the horn. I think
- 1:52:55Speaker 2: we're getting into the territory now where we've talked a
- 1:52:59Speaker 2: lot about the coaching.
- 1:53:00Speaker 4: Right, it's trying to start talking about the front office
- 1:53:02Speaker 4: and a.
- 1:53:02Speaker 2: Lot about Gid Mayo. And just my two cents, this
- 1:53:05Speaker 2: is just my opinion. We're probably in the territory now
- 1:53:08Speaker 2: at Girod Mayo where he's going to get a second year.
- 1:53:10Speaker 2: It seems to be that way. Yeah, I would be
- 1:53:13Speaker 2: pretty shocked. They would have to have like they would
- 1:53:16Speaker 2: have to lose forty five to nothing to I think
- 1:53:19Speaker 2: it's more than that. I think you would have to
- 1:53:20Speaker 2: see like fights on the sideline. Yeah, it would have
- 1:53:23Speaker 2: to have a complete implosion at this point for Girod
- 1:53:27Speaker 2: Mayo to not be back for a second season. It
- 1:53:30Speaker 2: is that the best thing we could debate that, you know,
- 1:53:33Speaker 2: Like I understand that there's multiple size of this. I
- 1:53:37Speaker 2: really also then feel, and I feel pretty strongly about this.
- 1:53:41Speaker 2: Scapegoating Alex van Pelt for what's gone on here, I
- 1:53:44Speaker 2: think would be a mistake.
- 1:53:45Speaker 4: I could not agree with you more.
- 1:53:47Speaker 2: I actually think that the person that's done the best
- 1:53:50Speaker 2: job at his job on the coaching staff is probably Vampel.
- 1:53:53Speaker 2: Doesn't mean he can't make changes below him, yeah, And
- 1:53:55Speaker 2: it doesn't mean he's been perfect. Yeah, certainly hasn't. Like
- 1:53:58Speaker 2: I've had a lot of criticism of his play calling,
- 1:54:01Speaker 2: mostly the play design and the creativity of the offense,
- 1:54:05Speaker 2: and then the red zone stuff we talked about earlier.
- 1:54:07Speaker 2: I put that as much on Vapelt as anybody. But
- 1:54:09Speaker 2: at the same time, he's done a nice job with
- 1:54:12Speaker 2: Drake may They seem to have a good relationship working together.
- 1:54:16Speaker 2: There's enough there from a base offense that I see
- 1:54:18Speaker 2: that if they had better personnel what they are trying
- 1:54:21Speaker 2: to execute and how they would be able to do it,
- 1:54:24Speaker 2: and at the end of the day, like, what message
- 1:54:26Speaker 2: does that kind of send to the organization that the
- 1:54:29Speaker 2: guy that actually did the best job, right, because some
- 1:54:32Speaker 2: head has to roll for three and twelve or three
- 1:54:34Speaker 2: and thirteen or whatever. The frick the math is now
- 1:54:37Speaker 2: three and fourteen because some head has to roll for that,
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: We're just gonna We're gonna can they know that's done
- 1:54:43Speaker 2: the best job?
- 1:54:43Speaker 4: What message does is cent to potential candidates if you're
- 1:54:45Speaker 4: looking for somebody to upgrade, like they know they're not
- 1:54:48Speaker 4: coming in a ton of job security.
- 1:54:49Speaker 2: No, I completely agree with you, And that's not say
- 1:54:51Speaker 2: Alex em Pelt should be offensive coordinator for life. Yeah,
- 1:54:54Speaker 2: he's just earned a second year.
- 1:54:55Speaker 4: I'll say this on the Elliott Wolf thing, and I
- 1:54:58Speaker 4: know that people might laugh at me saying this. When
- 1:55:00Speaker 4: it comes to the Patriots in their draft history, I
- 1:55:03Speaker 4: think there are certainly some So I assume he's asked
- 1:55:06Speaker 4: about the draft getting right, bigger picture, free agencies and another story.
- 1:55:09Speaker 4: But when we're talking about that top draft pick, how
- 1:55:12Speaker 4: many wrong picks really are there? There's definitely some picks
- 1:55:16Speaker 4: that are better than others, but you look at the
- 1:55:20Speaker 4: majority of the board Travis Hunter would be a good pick.
- 1:55:24Speaker 4: We're not gonna complain if they draft Travis Hunter. Abdul
- 1:55:27Speaker 4: Carter would be a good pick. We're not gonna complain
- 1:55:29Speaker 4: if they draft at to Carter. I will say Ted McMillan.
- 1:55:32Speaker 2: Would be a good pick. Yeah, like pending free agency,
- 1:55:34Speaker 2: and I will be nervous. It's a good so I
- 1:55:38Speaker 2: left him. There's some picks that are better than others. Yeah,
- 1:55:41Speaker 2: how many Will Carr Will Campbell would be a good pick?
- 1:55:46Speaker 4: How many like bad picks really are there? Because they
- 1:55:49Speaker 4: have so many needs.
- 1:55:50Speaker 2: Right, there's not a lot of bad paces at the
- 1:55:52Speaker 2: top of the first I agree with you, And it's
- 1:55:54Speaker 2: pretty hard to miss on a pick that high.
- 1:55:57Speaker 4: The only guy I look at that I'm like, I
- 1:55:59Speaker 4: really hope they don't draft him at the top. And
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: it's not even that he's a bad player. I just
- 1:56:02Speaker 4: don't think there's a spot for him. And we talked
- 1:56:05Speaker 4: about this, I think it was last week.
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: Is Mason Graham?
- 1:56:07Speaker 4: Yeah, he too redundant with Christian Barmore. It's one of
- 1:56:09Speaker 4: the few spots you have a good player, you really can't.
- 1:56:12Speaker 4: It's not like even if they took Will Johnson, like
- 1:56:14Speaker 4: you can play him a Gonzalez at the same time.
- 1:56:16Speaker 4: It's gonna be very hard to play Mason Graham and
- 1:56:21Speaker 4: Christian Barmore at the same time. That's really the only
- 1:56:24Speaker 4: guy I look at when I look at the top
- 1:56:25Speaker 4: of this list, and obviously the quarterbacks, but they're not
- 1:56:27Speaker 4: going to do that. Mason Graham is the only guy
- 1:56:30Speaker 4: I looking at the top of this list and say like, yeah,
- 1:56:32Speaker 4: I'd be unhappy if they draft him. I'd be happier
- 1:56:34Speaker 4: with some than others, but there aren't a lot of
- 1:56:38Speaker 4: bad picks on the board.
- 1:56:39Speaker 2: Yeah, So really quickly on Wolf. What's that on your sleeve?
- 1:56:42Speaker 2: By the way, why don get me started? And got
- 1:56:46Speaker 2: pain on it? All right? Anyways, really quickly on Wolf
- 1:56:48Speaker 2: and then we gotta get out of here. So I
- 1:56:50Speaker 2: just want to do two seconds on the Chargers. Uh.
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: The biggest thing to me with Wolf moving forward is
- 1:56:56Speaker 2: really one closing in free agency. I think that's gonna
- 1:57:00Speaker 2: be harder than just in terms of evaluating who they
- 1:57:06Speaker 2: should go after. I believe that part is kind of
- 1:57:09Speaker 2: easy to be honest with you, like, who are the
- 1:57:11Speaker 2: players you want? Is not the hard part. The hard
- 1:57:14Speaker 2: part is getting the contract signed and across the finish
- 1:57:17Speaker 2: line and getting that player in your building. Well, it's closing.
- 1:57:19Speaker 4: I know we got a wrap, but like I think
- 1:57:21Speaker 4: it's not just honestly, they need to make trades. They're
- 1:57:24Speaker 4: not gonna get everything they want for agency. I've said this,
- 1:57:27Speaker 4: I think t Higgins is going back to Cincinnati. It's
- 1:57:29Speaker 4: dk Metcalf and I don't know if you saw the
- 1:57:31Speaker 4: Athletic Football Podcast.
- 1:57:33Speaker 2: This week, it was Robert these people are giving you
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: credence here.
- 1:57:38Speaker 4: Robert Mas and Dereklass and we're both talking about, Yeah,
- 1:57:41Speaker 4: the Seahawks and move Metcalf. Like, I still think he's
- 1:57:44Speaker 4: gonna be the best guy available at that position.
- 1:57:46Speaker 2: So I'm not as concerned about them being able to
- 1:57:50Speaker 2: identify the players that they want in free agency. I'm
- 1:57:52Speaker 2: more concerned about them getting the players that they want
- 1:57:55Speaker 2: in free agency.
- 1:57:56Speaker 4: A little breaking news to Sean Jackson named the head coach.
- 1:57:58Speaker 2: At uh this is what you interrupt me for Delaware State,
- 1:58:02Speaker 2: DeShawn that's mike Vic DeShawn Jackson. That's kind of cool.
- 1:58:05Speaker 5: Uh.
- 1:58:06Speaker 2: So that's the biggest thing to me because they they
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: are still not like a great destination. They're they're more
- 1:58:13Speaker 2: attractive than they were a year ago because of Drake
- 1:58:15Speaker 2: May for an offensive player of T Higgins or DK
- 1:58:18Speaker 2: Metcalf or whatever. But those guys are gonna have tons
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: of options. They're gonna have tons of options that are
- 1:58:24Speaker 2: gonna pay him tons of money. So it's not your
- 1:58:26Speaker 2: money is not going to just be the only reason
- 1:58:29Speaker 2: why you get the player. Don't get the player. So
- 1:58:31Speaker 2: they're gonna have to sell that player on something. And
- 1:58:36Speaker 2: that's on Elliott Wolf, Like, that's on that staff and
- 1:58:38Speaker 2: girodmeyo a little bit too to persuade Elliott Wolf to
- 1:58:43Speaker 2: persuade T Higgins or whoever it is to sign with the Patriots.
- 1:58:47Speaker 2: Just a quick story aside. You know in in Tennessee,
- 1:58:51Speaker 2: you know, big thing that I had heard from a
- 1:58:53Speaker 2: lot of their beat writers and stuff like that about
- 1:58:55Speaker 2: the Calvin Ridley sweepstakes. Ran Carthin, their GM is this
- 1:58:59Speaker 2: sort of closer like he's like, do you ever watch suits? No,
- 1:59:03Speaker 2: But I understand that he's Harvey Spector right, Like he
- 1:59:05Speaker 2: comes in and he gets the deal done, and that
- 1:59:10Speaker 2: might have been the difference. Now there was other things
- 1:59:13Speaker 2: like you know, the whole location and money and all that.
- 1:59:15Speaker 2: I'm sure, but ran Carthin apparently is this guy that
- 1:59:19Speaker 2: just comes in and closes deals.
- 1:59:20Speaker 4: Something to make those something that makes those things like
- 1:59:23Speaker 4: a factor is how it's pitched right.
- 1:59:25Speaker 2: So that's that's a big thing to me. And then
- 1:59:27Speaker 2: in the draft, it's all about what you do in
- 1:59:30Speaker 2: two through seven. I'm not trying to totally take credit
- 1:59:34Speaker 2: away from them for taking a guy like Drake may.
- 1:59:36Speaker 4: We took too many calls on Marvin Harrison to he
- 1:59:39Speaker 4: was a slam dunk pick.
- 1:59:40Speaker 2: Right, But it's sort of similar now where you're gonna
- 1:59:43Speaker 2: have you're gonna pick two overall, you're gonna have a
- 1:59:45Speaker 2: board of four or five guys, and all four or
- 1:59:47Speaker 2: five you have a really strong case to make the pick.
- 1:59:50Speaker 2: So it's not gonna be the hardest pick in the
- 1:59:52Speaker 2: world in the first round. Jalen Polk, Kendon Wallace, Javon Baker, like,
- 1:59:57Speaker 2: those are the guys that make you gms great like
- 2:00:00Speaker 2: those are. That's how Howie Roseman is one of the
- 2:00:03Speaker 2: best GMS in football. That's how Brett Viach is one
- 2:00:05Speaker 2: of the best gms in football. Those guys make their
- 2:00:08Speaker 2: money on Days two and three in the draft. Yeah,
- 2:00:12Speaker 2: and so that's gonna be big for Wolf. He's gonna
- 2:00:15Speaker 2: get it, Like just like Girod's gonna get the second
- 2:00:17Speaker 2: year as the head coach. Elliott Wolf is gonna be
- 2:00:19Speaker 2: the one picking the groceries and the offseason for the Patriots.
- 2:00:22Speaker 2: His future with this team will be decided by this offseason.
- 2:00:26Speaker 2: If he strikes out this offseason, he's he's probably gonna
- 2:00:28Speaker 2: be I. They both problem. Yeah, So really quickly on
- 2:00:32Speaker 2: the Chargers, my big uh, you know the thing I'm
- 2:00:36Speaker 2: looking for in this game, really really good defensive mind
- 2:00:41Speaker 2: coming here with the Chargers. Jesse Minter probably gonna be
- 2:00:44Speaker 2: a head coach in the league, not before long. Really
- 2:00:48Speaker 2: one of those He's a tighte pants guy on the
- 2:00:50Speaker 2: defense side of the ball, right, Like he's he's Mike McDonald,
- 2:00:52Speaker 2: he's Demiko Ryans. Like he's one of those types of guys.
- 2:00:56Speaker 2: Uh maybet better than Stale, but he's one of those guys.
- 2:01:02Speaker 2: It's a schemer, like he's a mastermind. Right, he's gonna
- 2:01:05Speaker 2: come in. He's gonna be really good on the x's
- 2:01:07Speaker 2: and o's. He's gonna be really good at knowing your
- 2:01:09Speaker 2: ten season situational tend and seas in particular. So that
- 2:01:12Speaker 2: is a really tough matchup for Alex fann Pelt. We
- 2:01:15Speaker 2: talk about him getting his second year here and all
- 2:01:17Speaker 2: that kind of stuff. You know, this is one of
- 2:01:19Speaker 2: those games I thought the Bills are kind of a
- 2:01:21Speaker 2: do what you do type of defense. You sort of
- 2:01:23Speaker 2: know you're gonna get four to three over, you're gonna
- 2:01:25Speaker 2: get Cover two, you're gonna get Manta man. You kind
- 2:01:27Speaker 2: of know what the Bills are gonna do. Uh, this
- 2:01:30Speaker 2: Chargers team is gonna spin the dial a lot more
- 2:01:32Speaker 2: on Drake May. So big game for Alex van Pelt,
- 2:01:35Speaker 2: big game for Drake May going up against a pretty
- 2:01:37Speaker 2: good Chargers defense to show some chops there. But defensively
- 2:01:41Speaker 2: for the Patriots, I still feel like this is a
- 2:01:45Speaker 2: game that they can compete in like they did against Buffalo.
- 2:01:47Speaker 2: I look at this Chargers offense. It's Lad McConkie, like
- 2:01:50Speaker 2: it's Lad McConkie.
- 2:01:52Speaker 4: And Will Disley's their second leading receiver and he's hurt.
- 2:01:56Speaker 2: It's really not a passing offense. Great quarterback, one really
- 2:02:01Speaker 2: good receiver. They just played a great quarterback and one
- 2:02:04Speaker 2: really good receiver, and Josh Allen and Khalil Shakir and
- 2:02:07Speaker 2: did a really good job this game. To me, defensively
- 2:02:10Speaker 2: has a ton of carryover. The one caveat is that
- 2:02:13Speaker 2: the Chargers will run the ball. They will not. They
- 2:02:17Speaker 2: won't pull a Joe Brady Josh Allen and get baited
- 2:02:20Speaker 2: into throwing the ball forty times in a game. They
- 2:02:22Speaker 2: don't need to be throwing the ball forty times. They're
- 2:02:24Speaker 2: gonna be two back. They're gonna put a full back
- 2:02:26Speaker 2: in the backfield. They're gonna put Justin Herbert under center
- 2:02:30Speaker 2: or in the still and they're gonna run the ball,
- 2:02:32Speaker 2: and if the Patriots can't stop it and get them
- 2:02:34Speaker 2: into third down situations, then it will be a Charger game.
- 2:02:38Speaker 2: Like the Chargers will control the game. Yeah, I agree
- 2:02:41Speaker 2: with a lot of that. I know we've got to
- 2:02:42Speaker 2: get out of here.
- 2:02:42Speaker 4: I just I think it's a tougher team than the Bills,
- 2:02:45Speaker 4: and they're gonna have to win it if they can
- 2:02:46Speaker 4: win at the line of scrimmag which is than if
- 2:02:48Speaker 4: with this team, if they can win at the line
- 2:02:49Speaker 4: of scrimmage. I don't know if they win, but they
- 2:02:50Speaker 4: keep it close. I know some people look at it
- 2:02:52Speaker 4: as four and a half as the number is being
- 2:02:54Speaker 4: you know, surprised it's that low. You also have the
- 2:02:57Speaker 4: whole thing about West Coast Dome team coming to the Northeast.
- 2:03:00Speaker 4: Herbert has not been good here in Jillette Stadium, especially
- 2:03:03Speaker 4: late in the year. I think the Chargers are probably
- 2:03:05Speaker 4: trying to win this game, like thirteen to ten.
- 2:03:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I would also say they the Chargers don't run
- 2:03:11Speaker 2: away from you and the scoreboard necessarily like the Bills can.
- 2:03:13Speaker 2: The Bills can be a wagon and they can hang
- 2:03:16Speaker 2: forty five on you and just run away from you.
- 2:03:18Speaker 2: This Chargers team is nineteenth in the points per game.
- 2:03:21Speaker 2: They're fifteenth in DVOA. On offense. They have a really
- 2:03:24Speaker 2: good quarterback, but they're not a great offense yet they
- 2:03:27Speaker 2: still have holes. Receiving corps is still not scaring a
- 2:03:30Speaker 2: lot of people. So this Charger game could be a
- 2:03:34Speaker 2: Patriots style game where it's twenty to seventeen, right, seventeen fourteen,
- 2:03:39Speaker 2: twenty to seventeen. I think I paid twenty fourteen on
- 2:03:42Speaker 2: PU Like that's a score that the Patriots could win
- 2:03:44Speaker 2: a game within. The Bills are a little bit different.
- 2:03:46Speaker 2: The Bills you had to score and you knew it.
- 2:03:48Speaker 2: So that's the Chargers on Sunday. I hope our Saturday.
- 2:03:52Speaker 2: Excuse me, open the future we do shows again where
- 2:03:55Speaker 2: we have like a long game preview segment. It just
- 2:03:59Speaker 2: it feels like we haven't really cared about the games
- 2:04:02Speaker 2: in a while, and I hope that changes here soon.
- 2:04:05Speaker 2: But we'll be back next week, one more regular season
- 2:04:08Speaker 2: to go, game to go against the Bills here at
- 2:04:10Speaker 2: Jillette Stadium. We'll obviously talk plenty of draft in the
- 2:04:13Speaker 2: offseason as well at that point, but until then, bud
