- 0:17Speaker 1: Rudy Navarrete joining me right now. We're going to talk
- 0:19Speaker 1: about a fun event that's coming up tomorrow night, and
- 0:21Speaker 1: it's an opportunity for you to go out and make
- 0:23Speaker 1: a difference. 24 Hours on 8th Street is a documentary.
- 0:27Speaker 1: And you guys had how many showings at the State Theater, Rudy?
- 0:30Speaker 1: You had a bunch, didn't you?
- 0:31Speaker 2: Yeah, we've had eight showings, all sold out. So it's
- 0:35Speaker 2: just wild in the best kind of way at the reception.
- 0:38Speaker 1: And now, tomorrow, there's an opportunity for up to 800
- 0:42Speaker 1: people to come out at once. It'll be at the
- 0:43Speaker 1: University of Sioux Falls in a much bigger room. And again,
- 0:47Speaker 1: this is just a really, really cool thing that people
- 0:50Speaker 1: get a chance to come together. I'm encouraging people to
- 0:52Speaker 1: come with a friend, bring a friend along. And let's
- 0:55Speaker 1: talk about 24 Hours on 8th Street, because this is
- 0:57Speaker 1: near and dear to you. Where did this whole concept
- 1:00Speaker 1: come from?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Yeah, so I live over Kitty Corner from Terry Redlin,
- 1:04Speaker 2: the school over there, just on 8th Street, actually. And
- 1:08Speaker 2: I have a buddy who has a food truck called
- 1:10Speaker 2: Winnie City Bites, and him and I became friends. And
- 1:14Speaker 2: so I frequent over there when he was across the
- 1:17Speaker 2: street from Bishop Dudley. And so it's my neighborhood. And
- 1:21Speaker 2: I would go over there and have food often and
- 1:25Speaker 2: watch sports, have a drink, walk home, just became a
- 1:29Speaker 2: regular there. and um and it gets a little sometimes
- 1:33Speaker 2: a little wild outside of Bishop because and you know
- 1:36Speaker 2: and and I see it every day but it's my
- 1:38Speaker 2: neighborhood and uh so I'm used to just being around
- 1:43Speaker 2: there anyhow I woke up one day and um I
- 1:46Speaker 2: had nowhere to go in a hurry so I was
- 1:48Speaker 2: just kind of going to sleep waking up going to
- 1:50Speaker 2: sleep kind of like in that alpha state I would
- 1:53Speaker 2: say yeah and I just had this idea like uh
- 1:57Speaker 2: What would 24 hours look like on 8th Street? If
- 1:59Speaker 2: you were just to drop somebody off, set them there,
- 2:02Speaker 2: where would they find their resources? Something to eat, something
- 2:05Speaker 2: to drink, use the restroom, cool down, warm up, depending
- 2:08Speaker 2: on the season, transportation, the whole nine. And, you know,
- 2:12Speaker 2: it's funny because I really, like, visualized it, darn near
- 2:15Speaker 2: dreamed it, where I just– you know, saw it and
- 2:17Speaker 2: then I pictured it as a documentary, something very uplifting
- 2:20Speaker 2: where people get done watching it and they want to
- 2:22Speaker 2: get involved, whatever that looks like, time, talent, treasure, you know,
- 2:25Speaker 2: maybe they're like, hey, you know, I've always wanted to
- 2:27Speaker 2: volunteer at Banquet or, you know, I can afford $ 50
- 2:30Speaker 2: a month at the Bishop or whatever it looks like
- 2:33Speaker 2: was the idea and I wanted to make sure there
- 2:36Speaker 2: was no fingers pointed, I wanted it because at the
- 2:39Speaker 2: end of the day, everybody's going to point the finger
- 2:40Speaker 2: at somebody else, so I wanted to steer clear of that,
- 2:45Speaker 2: and then I just totally visualized it. Anyhow, so I
- 2:48Speaker 2: reached out to a friend of mine who we've done
- 2:50Speaker 2: community stuff, very savvy with knowing all the logistics of
- 2:54Speaker 2: why the roads are the way they are, and what's
- 2:56Speaker 2: good for civilians, what's good for the cars, the whole nine.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And I reached out to him, left a message, a
- 3:02Speaker 2: voicemail and a text message, So I go walk down
- 3:04Speaker 2: to Indy City Bites and there's a regular there, there
- 3:07Speaker 2: more than I was. And after the initial, hey, how's
- 3:10Speaker 2: it going? You know, I sat down. The very first
- 3:13Speaker 2: thing he said to me was, you know, somebody really
- 3:15Speaker 2: ought to make a documentary about a cross street there.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And that's what you had just been thinking about.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Yeah. And I said, you know what? Funny you say that.
- 3:22Speaker 2: I said, my gosh, I said, I just totally like
- 3:25Speaker 2: visualize that man. And then I showed him my text message.
- 3:28Speaker 2: He just looked at me like, wow. And I was like,
- 3:29Speaker 2: and that to me right there, cemented it like this
- 3:31Speaker 2: needs to happen. I didn't know what it was going
- 3:33Speaker 2: to look like or anything like that, but, uh, uh,
- 3:36Speaker 2: it just, I knew it was going to happen. And
- 3:38Speaker 2: one thing led to another met Everett and, uh, we, uh,
- 3:42Speaker 2: him and Sean, uh, Everett Palmer and Sean Baker were the, uh,
- 3:46Speaker 2: Everett's the director Sean and I are producers but anyway
- 3:49Speaker 2: we set up a date made it happen and then
- 3:52Speaker 2: it just did the 24 hours Everett and I were
- 3:54Speaker 2: the only ones to do the 24 hours and then
- 3:56Speaker 2: anyhow you know it was quite the day learned quite
- 3:58Speaker 2: a bit and then it was just like we needed
- 4:00Speaker 2: to interview all the agencies doing the work and it
- 4:03Speaker 2: just steamrolled to all this beautiful stuff to really tell
- 4:06Speaker 2: the story it's been just it's out of this world
- 4:10Speaker 2: it's the coolest thing ever.
- 4:11Speaker 1: Well, and the thing that I will say, if you
- 4:13Speaker 1: want to fix a problem, the first thing you need
- 4:15Speaker 1: to do is let people know there's a problem. Because
- 4:17Speaker 1: more people knowing that there's a problem, now you have
- 4:20Speaker 1: other people who want to help solve the problem. And
- 4:22Speaker 1: have people come out?
- 4:23Speaker 2: Yes.
- 4:24Speaker 1: I mean, you sold out every showing at the State Theater. Now,
- 4:27Speaker 1: tomorrow night is a chance for people to come out
- 4:29Speaker 1: in much bigger numbers, room for 800 people tomorrow night.
- 4:33Speaker 1: And if people want to get tickets, we're going to
- 4:34Speaker 1: tell them how to do that here in a bit.
- 4:36Speaker 1: But there is an opportunity for each and every person
- 4:38Speaker 1: to make a difference in their community. And Rudy, you've
- 4:41Speaker 1: done that. You've made a difference. And I think that
- 4:43Speaker 1: you need to be commended for that. That's amazing.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I appreciate it. You know, the heroes are the ones
- 4:47Speaker 2: doing the work every day, you know, meeting all these agencies,
- 4:51Speaker 2: you know, the people doing it. It's a passion. It's
- 4:53Speaker 2: a calling. And they're not doing it for the money.
- 4:55Speaker 2: They're doing it because it's what they want to do.
- 4:58Speaker 2: And they're the heroes. I appreciate your compliment. I really do.
- 5:03Speaker 2: I'm just saying this. Once you really start meeting the
- 5:06Speaker 2: people involved, it's just like, wow, how cool.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Absolutely. And tomorrow night would be a great night, folks.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Come out, be a part of this event. It's at
- 5:13Speaker 1: the University of Sioux Falls. Again, there's room for about
- 5:16Speaker 1: 800 people. But if you think about Sioux Falls, there's
- 5:18Speaker 1: thousands and thousands and thousands of people. So if you
- 5:21Speaker 1: want to go get your tickets today, I'm going to
- 5:23Speaker 1: tell you how to get those here in a second. Rudy,
- 5:25Speaker 1: thank you again for taking the time to visit with me.
- 5:27Speaker 1: And thank you for doing what you're doing to make
- 5:29Speaker 1: a difference in our community.
- 5:30Speaker 2: I appreciate you, John. Absolutely.
- 5:32Speaker 1: And again, if you would like to get tickets, facebook.com
- 5:35Speaker 1: slash 24 hours on 8th street is their Facebook page.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Now I understand a lot of time, a lot of
- 5:40Speaker 1: folks driving to work at this time. So if you're
- 5:42Speaker 1: going down the road and you're like, I'm never going
- 5:44Speaker 1: to remember that here, you can remember this facebook.com slash
