- 0:48She's a happy girl,
- 1:01She's a happy girl There are so many times that our life feels like a battle.
- 1:06And when the battle gets heated, it's very easy to forget all that we know the
- 1:11Lord has done and let fear take hold.
- 1:15In Deuteronomy 3.22, we read, You shall not fear them, for the Lord your God, He shall fight for you.
- 1:23Join us in today's podcast of Women at the Well Ministries is Erika Close takes
- 1:28us to the book of Deuteronomy today in chapter 3 to look at the power of remembering
- 1:34all that the Lord has done so
- 1:36that we will have faith enough to let go and watch God fight our battles.
- 1:41Well, thank you all so much for joining us in this podcast. It is exciting to
- 1:46be able to talk to you again about the book of Deuteronomy.
- 1:51You know, so often we feel so far removed from the Old Testament.
- 1:56Those of us who live on this side of the cross and those of us who have Jesus
- 2:00as our Savior, the Old Testament often feels so far away and oftentimes so inaccessible.
- 2:07But the reality is that there is tremendous truth in the accounts that we read
- 2:12in the Old Testament and tremendous truth that still holds true for us.
- 2:17You know, we were given the whole Bible, which means that the whole Bible holds relevancy for us.
- 2:25And therefore, it's something that we need to look at and to understand.
- 2:29So Deuteronomy is one of my favorite books, and it is rich in so many lessons.
- 2:34And I'm so excited to be able to talk to you today about some lessons that we
- 2:39find for us in Deuteronomy chapter 3.
- 2:42Today's key verse is Deuteronomy 3.22, which says.
- 2:47You shall not fear them, for the Lord your God, he shall fight for you.
- 2:52So today we're going to be reading all of Deuteronomy chapter 3,
- 2:56which is verses 1 through 29.
- 2:59Then we turned and went up the way to Bashan, and Og the king of Bashan came
- 3:05out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edri.
- 3:10And the Lord said unto me, Fear him not, for I will deliver him and all his
- 3:15people and his land into thy hand, and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon,
- 3:23king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.
- 3:26So the Lord our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan,
- 3:31and all his people, and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.
- 3:37And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took.
- 3:41Not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og, and Bashan.
- 3:49All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars,
- 3:53beside unwalled towns a great many.
- 3:56And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon,
- 4:01utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city.
- 4:05But all the cattle and the spoil of the cities we took for a prey to ourselves.
- 4:11And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the
- 4:16land that was on this side, Jordan, from the river Arnon unto Mount Hermon,
- 4:21which Hermon the Sidians called Syrian and the Amorites call it Shanir.
- 4:26All the cities of the plain and all Gilead and all Bashan unto Salchai and Edri,
- 4:33cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
- 4:35For only Og, king of Bashan, remained of the remnant of giants.
- 4:41Behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron. Is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon?
- 4:47Nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth thereof, after the cubit of Amam.
- 4:53And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Arur, which is by the river
- 4:58Arnon, and half Mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.
- 5:06And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og,
- 5:10gave I unto the half-tribe of Manasseh, all the region of Argob,
- 5:15with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.
- 5:18Jair, the son of Manasseh, took all the country of Argob unto the coasts of
- 5:23Gesheri and Machathi and called them after his own name, Bashan Havath Jair, unto this day.
- 5:31And I gave Gilead unto Machir, and unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites
- 5:36I gave from Gilead even unto the river Arnon half the valley,
- 5:41and the border even unto the river Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon.
- 5:46The plain also, and Jordan, and the coast thereof, from Chinareth even unto
- 5:51the sea of the plain, even the salt sea, under Ashutath-pisgah eastward.
- 5:56And I commanded you at that time, saying, The Lord your God hath given you this land to possess it.
- 6:03You shall pass over armed before your brethren the children of Israel,
- 6:07all that are meat for the war.
- 6:09But your wives, and your little ones and your cattle, for I know that ye have much cattle,
- 6:15shall abide in your cities which I have given you, until the Lord has given
- 6:20rest unto your brethren as well as unto you, and until they also possess the
- 6:25land which the Lord your God hath given them beyond Jordan.
- 6:29And then shall ye return every man unto his possession which I have given you.
- 6:35And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, Thine eyes have seen all that the
- 6:39Lord your God hath done unto these two kings.
- 6:44So shall the Lord do unto all the kingdoms whither thou passest.
- 6:48You shall not fear them, for the Lord your God, he shall fight for you.
- 6:54And I besought the Lord at that time, saying, O Lord God, thou hast begun to
- 7:00show thy servant thy greatness and thy mighty hand.
- 7:04For what God is there in heaven or in earth that can do according to thy works
- 7:10and according to thy might?
- 7:12I pray thee, let me go over and see the good land that is beyond Jordan,
- 7:18that goodly mountain, and Lebanon.
- 7:21But the Lord was wroth with me for your sakes, and would not hear me.
- 7:25And the Lord said unto me, Let it suffice thee, speak no more unto me of this matter.
- 7:31Get thee up into the top of Pisgah, and lift up thine eyes westward and northward,
- 7:37and southward and eastward, and behold it with thine eyes, for thou shalt not go over this Jordan.
- 7:45But charge Joshua, and encourage him, and strengthen him, for he shall go over
- 7:51before this people, and he shall cause them to inherit the land which thou shalt see.
- 7:57So we abode in the valley over against Beth Peor.
- 8:01So chapter 3 of Deuteronomy is the last of the chapters that we read in Deuteronomy
- 8:07that is purely a review of the books of Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers.
- 8:12So many of these accounts appear earlier in one of those three books.
- 8:18So in chapter 3 in Deuteronomy, the Israelites are facing Og, the king of Bashan.
- 8:24And once again, the Lord gives the Israelites a promise, and they take hold of it. They really do.
- 8:30The Lord says, Fear him not, for I will deliver him and all his people and his
- 8:34land into thy hand, and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon,
- 8:39the king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.
- 8:42So because they could believe, and they held on to that promise,
- 8:46the Israelites were victorious.
- 8:49They remembered what the Lord had done.
- 8:51When they went out against Sihon, king of the Amorites, and that gave them faith
- 8:56to move forward as they went into battle against Og.
- 9:00So the land that formerly belonged to Og was then given over to some of the tribes of Israel.
- 9:07And we read about how that land was to be distributed to the Reubenites,
- 9:11the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
- 9:14All of those tribes received a portion of the land that we just read about that
- 9:19was won in this particular battle with King Og.
- 9:23But before these tribes could take hold of their land, all the tribes of Israel
- 9:28had to receive their land.
- 9:30So it was promised to them, and it was on this side of the Jordan,
- 9:35but they couldn't actually go in and possess it yet.
- 9:38It was made clear that their lives and their children would be able to go in
- 9:44and live in the cities that they had won in battle.
- 9:46But until all the brethren, so all the other tribes had received their rest
- 9:52or their place to rest, I guess we could say, the men would not be able to go
- 9:56in and inhabit those cities.
- 9:58We read in Deuteronomy 3.20, until the Lord hath given rest unto your brethren
- 10:04as well as unto you, and until they possess the land which the Lord your God
- 10:09hath given them beyond Jordan.
- 10:11And then shall ye return every man unto his possession, which I have given you.
- 10:17So until all of the tribes of Israel could inhabit the promised land,
- 10:23these three tribes, even though that land was already sort of conquered,
- 10:27it still wasn't really accessible to them.
- 10:31So after we get through this account of that battle and the distribution of
- 10:36all of that land to those three tribes,
- 10:39the chapter sort of changes gear and Moses stops talking to the people and he
- 10:44basically starts talking to Joshua.
- 10:46And we know that Joshua is Moses's successor.
- 10:50So Moses tells Joshua that he needs to remember all that the Lord has done as
- 10:55he takes the Israelites across the Jordan River.
- 10:59So just as the Lord allowed the Israelites to conquer the two kingdoms that
- 11:03we read about in this chapter, he promises that so he would do for all those kingdoms to come.
- 11:09And he encourages Joshua with our key verse for today.
- 11:13He shall not fear them for the Lord your God. He shall fight for you.
- 11:17So after we read that verse in chapter 3, verse 22, again, we change gears in the chapter.
- 11:26And Moses begins to have a conversation with the Lord. And he asks the Lord
- 11:30if there is any way that he, Moses, can cross the Jordan into the promised land.
- 11:37And we know because of Moses' disobedience, which we read about in Numbers 20
- 11:42and verse 12, Moses was forbidden from entering the promised land.
- 11:47Yet once again, he asks if he can go over and see the land.
- 11:52And the Lord spoke, and the Lord spoke, and the Lord was clear.
- 11:57And we read that it says that he would not hear Moses' plea.
- 12:02He tells Moses that he can go to the top of Mount Pisgah and he can look into the promised land,
- 12:08but that his job now was to encourage and strengthen Joshua,
- 12:13for it was Joshua who would be the one that would actually take the Israelites over,
- 12:19into the promised land.
- 12:21So as we step back and look at this chapter, there are so many lessons here,
- 12:26but there's one that really, really stands out to me, and that's this.
- 12:32The Lord has a perfect plan, and He also has a perfect path for us.
- 12:38He also has a perfect promise that if we follow closely behind Him.
- 12:44He will clear that path ahead of us.
- 12:47In the early parts of that chapter, we see that when the Israelites walked in
- 12:51full obedience and that when they
- 12:54went into battle, exactly as the Lord commanded, they were victorious.
- 12:58They still had to go into battle, but they were victorious in that battle.
- 13:03And this lesson was really key for Joshua because he'd be taking the Israelites
- 13:07into many more battles, but it's also key for us, right?
- 13:11What's truth for Joshua was also truth for us as well.
- 13:16Our verse again, "'You shall not fear them for the Lord your God,
- 13:19"'he shall fight for you.'",
- 13:22We don't need to fear when the Lord asks us to step out in faith.
- 13:27Because if the Lord asks us to step out in faith and do something,
- 13:31He is promising to make us a way.
- 13:34Every one of the Lord's asks comes with a promise.
- 13:39The key is walking in step with Him so that we receive the promise that comes
- 13:45along with what He is asking us to do.
- 13:48In contrast to that lesson, we see at the end of the chapter what happens when we have disobedience,
- 13:57when we don't follow the Lord's path, when we don't seek out his plan and kind of go our own way.
- 14:04Back in Numbers chapter 20, we read the account of the Lord giving the Israelites water from the rock.
- 14:10And we read how the Lord commanded Moses to speak to the rock,
- 14:14right? He was supposed to speak to the rock to bring forth water.
- 14:18But instead, Moses smote the rock. He hid it with his staff.
- 14:22And at that time, Moses was told that he would not enter into the promised land.
- 14:28We're told in Galatians 6, 7, that whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.
- 14:34There are consequences for every one of our actions.
- 14:38And Moses was disobedient. And unfortunately, the consequence of his disobedience
- 14:44was that he would not cross the Jordan.
- 14:47Moses stepped outside God's plan, and therefore he couldn't receive the full blessing of God.
- 14:54He still received many blessings, but he did not receive the full blessing that
- 15:02God had promised to him and the full promise that God had for him,
- 15:09which was to enter into the promised land himself.
- 15:12You know, the book of Deuteronomy is very much a book about obedience.
- 15:18We see the Israelites walk in obedience, and we see them walk in disobedience,
- 15:23and we see them swing back to obedience and we see them swing over to disobedience.
- 15:30And it's often hard to read.
- 15:35Because we get very judgmental and we want to say, oh my goodness,
- 15:38can you believe they did it again?
- 15:40But if we're honest with ourselves, how often are we disobedient?
- 15:44How often do we do it again?
- 15:46How often do we put things in front of the Lord and in front of what he has asked us to do?
- 15:51How often do we make our own path instead of seeking out and following the path that God has for us?
- 15:58You know, as Christians, we're told to obey God because it's in our obedience
- 16:04that we show him just how much we love him.
- 16:08Obeying God isn't a chore. Obeying God should be a response to his love.
- 16:16And obeying God is nearly impossible if we don't know who God is and aren't
- 16:22filled with the love that he gives us because that obedience is a response.
- 16:28It's a response to his love. It's a response to what he did for us on the cross.
- 16:33It's a response to how he inhabits our hearts and lives and speaks to us each and every day.
- 16:40You know, there's no way that we can ever repay what Christ did for us on Calvary.
- 16:47But if we walk in his ways and in obedience to his commandments,
- 16:51we can show off our love for him.
- 16:54And as Christians, that's what we're called to do.
- 16:58We're called to show off our love for Him and make His love for us so incredibly
- 17:05attractive that everybody around us wants what we have.
- 17:11Remember, you are loved. Jesus loves you.
