Speaker 3: Want to visit with some folks to start at the
• 2:31
Speaker 3: show this morning that are doing an event in Charleston,
• 2:34
Speaker 3: and actually we had them on the show last year.
• 2:37
Speaker 3: The event is called Guns to Gardens and it's a
• 2:41
Speaker 3: community gun safe surrender, meaning if you have firearms that
• 2:45
Speaker 3: for one reason or another you don't want any more,
• 2:48
Speaker 3: they'll they keep in mind this is a voluntary event.
• 2:52
Speaker 3: They are not coming to take anyone's guns or anything
• 2:54
Speaker 3: like that. Just so you know. The event is going
• 2:57
Speaker 3: to be May third, from one till three at Saint
• 2:59
Speaker 3: Mark's United Methods Church or in Charleston, and uh, we've
• 3:03
Speaker 3: upgraded the studio since you guys were here a little
• 3:05
Speaker 3: bit since last year, and uh, we've act. We've got
• 3:09
Speaker 3: signs on the wall to we didn't have that yesterday
• 3:11
Speaker 3: when I left. We have signs so that way if
• 3:13
Speaker 3: I forget where I'm working, I can look and to say,
• 3:15
  Speaker 3: oh it's it's metroing, it's w c HS. Let me
• 3:18
Speaker 3: start and just have you guys go around and introduce yourselves.
• 3:20
Speaker 5: Go ahead, Hi, I'm Robert Ivesak with guns to Gardens Charleston.
• 3:25
Speaker 6: And Sarah Gottlieb okay, Dina Moehler, Okay, all right, so
• 3:31
Speaker 6: this is the second year, yes, that you folks have
• 3:33
  Speaker 6: done this before.
• 3:35
Speaker 3: We talk about, guys, what the event is. Let's talk
• 3:39
Speaker 3: about what it's not. Okay, it is voluntary, as I said,
• 3:45
Speaker 3: So just take it from the beginning, where this whole
• 3:48
Speaker 3: idea came from, and how how the whole thing works.
• 3:51
Speaker 3: Any of you go ahead.
• 3:52
Speaker 6: The idea came from a Mennon night pastor slash blacksmith
• 3:58
Speaker 6: in Colorado. He saw it to what's the word to
• 4:07
Speaker 6: practice the scripture from Isaiah they shall beat their swords
• 4:11
Speaker 6: into plowshares, and he began transforming guns and then the
• 4:15
Speaker 6: first Guns to Gardens event was held in Colorado after
• 4:19
Speaker 6: a mass shooting at a king super there.
• 4:23
  Speaker 7: It brought a.
• 4:23
Speaker 6: Lot of healing to that community, and it just grew
• 4:27
Speaker 6: from there we were talking earlier. Now it's spread at
• 4:30
Speaker 6: at least in twenty five different states across the United States.
• 4:34
Speaker 6: This is the second location in West Virginia. And we've
• 4:39
Speaker 6: found that there are a lot of people who own
• 4:41
Speaker 6: a gun they don't want and aren't comfortable selling it
• 4:45
Speaker 6: for whatever reason, and this sort of event fits their need.
• 4:48
Speaker 3: And this is we want to stress to people because
• 4:50
Speaker 3: there's a little bit of not on your guy's behalf.
• 4:53
Speaker 3: But last year there were some people after I had
• 4:55
Speaker 3: you on the show. I think they had some misconceptions
• 4:57
Speaker 3: about it. It's why I wanted to start by saying
• 4:59
Speaker 3: what it's and then we'll get into it to what
• 5:02
Speaker 3: it is. This is not a gun grab, this is
• 5:06
Speaker 3: not you're not going to be This is voluntary. And
• 5:08
Speaker 3: give us an example of something that would maybe happen
• 5:11
Speaker 3: in someone's life that would make them say, look, I
• 5:14
Speaker 3: want I want, I want rid of this firearm.
• 5:16
Speaker 8: There are several reasons why people relinquish firearms, and when
• 5:21
Speaker 8: we went through the training for guns to gardens, we
• 5:24
Speaker 8: were told what those reasons were and it was borne
• 5:26
Speaker 8: out last year. In our event, we have a lot
• 5:30
Speaker 8: of people who have inherited guns who really never wanted them.
• 5:35
Speaker 8: We have people who've had a change in their life circumstances.
• 5:38
Speaker 8: Especially in West Virginia, you have a lot of grandparents
• 5:41
Speaker 8: who find themselves having young children in the home and
• 5:46
Speaker 8: they may not be comfortable having firearms in the home
• 5:48
Speaker 8: any longer. Sometimes people have developed dementia or some other
• 5:53
Speaker 8: kind of mental illness and the other people in the
• 5:55
Speaker 8: home aren't comfortable having guns in the home, and very sadly,
• 6:02
Speaker 8: sometimes the guns have been used in a suicide. Now,
• 6:06
Speaker 8: already this year, we are aware of two widows who
• 6:09
Speaker 8: are bringing in guns and one person who's bringing in
• 6:12
Speaker 8: a gun that was used in a suicide. So, in
• 6:15
Speaker 8: response to the publicity that we've been able to get
• 6:19
Speaker 8: out there, we've had people reach out to us.
• 6:22
Speaker 3: You want to follow up.
• 6:23
Speaker 5: With that, Yeah, it's it's it's amazing when you hear
• 6:26
Speaker 5: these stories. And you know, I know when I when
• 6:30
Speaker 5: I first got involved with this with Sarah and Dina,
• 6:33
Speaker 5: you know, I was kind of like, really people will
• 6:36
Speaker 5: just give up their guns who have them turned into
• 6:38
Speaker 5: garden tools. And then when we saw the the the
• 6:43
Speaker 5: events in Colorado and places like that, so we could
• 6:46
  Speaker 5: do that here.
• 6:48
Speaker 3: Yeah, So talk about the event as it was last
• 6:51
Speaker 3: year in Charleston. I mean, because I didn't have you on.
• 6:53
Speaker 3: I had you on prior, not and not afterwards. How
• 6:55
Speaker 3: did the event go last year in Charleston?
• 6:57
Speaker 8: It was smooth as silk. We didn't have a bit
• 6:59
Speaker 8: of trouble, We didn't have any pushback from the public.
• 7:04
Speaker 8: The people who came came for the reasons that I've described,
• 7:09
Speaker 8: and we received twenty six guns and one baby gun okay,
• 7:16
  Speaker 8: a red Rider.
• 7:17
Speaker 3: So so it's called the Guns to Gardens. Talk about
• 7:21
Speaker 3: the process of how these become garden tools at some point.
• 7:25
Speaker 5: Well, we take the guns first of all, we the
• 7:29
Speaker 5: people who bring the guns to the event. They stay
• 7:33
Speaker 5: on site until their gun has been completely dismantled and
• 7:37
Speaker 5: cut into metal parts that are no longer a gun.
• 7:42
Speaker 5: So we never take possession of their gun, and so
• 7:47
Speaker 5: they have the opportunity to see it, see it dismantled.
• 7:51
Speaker 5: And then we have chopped saws that are used to
• 7:54
Speaker 5: cut the metal components down to so it's of a
• 7:59
Speaker 5: metal that's available to be re forged into garden tools, jewelry,
• 8:05
Speaker 5: community works of art in some places have done with
• 8:09
Speaker 5: the metal that comes from the guns.
• 8:12
Speaker 3: Talking again about this guns, It's a garden event happening
• 8:15
Speaker 3: in Charleston today. Alland Show on five to eighty Live
• 8:17
Speaker 3: is brought to part by Bridge Valley offering custom tailored
• 8:20
Speaker 3: trainings to supply uskill and graduates and apprenticeships for your company.
• 8:23
Speaker 3: Visit Bridge Valley dot ed. You talk about the reaction
• 8:26
Speaker 3: to some of the people that came to the event
• 8:29
Speaker 3: last year. I mean, we don't want to get into
• 8:32
Speaker 3: names or anything like that, but.
• 8:33
Speaker 8: Let's just it's an anonymous event first of all, that
• 8:38
Speaker 8: you know, we don't ask people their names. So but
• 8:42
Speaker 8: we did have one couple who didn't want to tell
• 8:46
Speaker 8: us why they were relinquishing the firearm, but they videoed
• 8:50
Speaker 8: it being chopped up, and that was pretty moving.
• 8:56
Speaker 3: I mean, the fact that I would think that the
• 8:58
Speaker 3: fact that they wanted to video it being that I'm
• 9:04
Speaker 3: gonna go ahead and glut on a limb here, that
• 9:05
Speaker 3: there was some sort of a traumatic event, that's what
• 9:08
Speaker 3: we I mean, it would have to be I mean,
• 9:10
Speaker 3: and the fact that they cared enough to video it
• 9:12
Speaker 3: as some sort of a closure for.
• 9:13
Speaker 6: Them, and a lot of people were just grateful it said,
• 9:17
Speaker 6: you know, we just again weren't comfortable selling it. It's
• 9:21
Speaker 6: been in my closet, and I just this is a
• 9:25
Speaker 6: perfect way for me to change this into a useful
• 9:29
Speaker 6: tool or a piece of jewelry.
• 9:31
Speaker 3: So when people are coming out, what do they need
• 9:33
  Speaker 3: to know? I've gotta, I gotta I got a gun
• 9:35
Speaker 3: in my house. I want to go through this process.
• 9:38
Speaker 3: What happens, I pull on to the to the lot,
• 9:41
Speaker 3: take it from there. What happened?
• 9:42
Speaker 8: Well, you should have it unloaded?
• 9:44
  Speaker 3: Yeah, that's that's number one.
• 9:45
Speaker 8: If you're able, yes, because or if you know, like
• 9:48
Speaker 8: for example, a widow may not know whether the gun
• 9:51
Speaker 8: is loaded or not, and she's not about to try
• 9:53
Speaker 8: to figure it out. So we have gun experts on
• 9:56
Speaker 8: site who verify that the gun is loaded. Once the
• 10:02
Speaker 8: person pulls onto the lot, we figure out how many
• 10:05
Speaker 8: guns they have, We ask them if they're unloaded. Irrespective
• 10:10
Speaker 8: of whether they say yes or no, we have them
• 10:13
Speaker 8: tested to make sure that they are unloaded, and then
• 10:18
Speaker 8: they are taken to a chopp saw the people stay
• 10:21
Speaker 8: in their car. They're given a shepherd who stays with
• 10:23
Speaker 8: them and does an anonymous and voluntary survey of why
• 10:28
Speaker 8: they are there, and they are offered gift cards for
• 10:33
Speaker 8: groceries in exchange for the guns. Some people take them,
• 10:37
Speaker 8: some people don't, and then they watch as the gun
• 10:41
Speaker 8: or they have the opportunity to watch. Some people don't
• 10:44
Speaker 8: want to watch. But the guns are chopped up while
• 10:48
Speaker 8: they are there, and once they are chopped up, then
• 10:52
Speaker 8: they are given their gift cards and they're free to go.
• 10:55
Speaker 3: Somebody I was explaining this process about having you guys
• 10:59
Speaker 3: on the show, and somebody within the building asked a
• 11:01
Speaker 3: question about about the about the guns, about about the
• 11:04
Speaker 3: security aspect of it. I mean, how do you know
• 11:08
Speaker 3: that this is if I'm if I'm pulling on of
• 11:10
  Speaker 3: a lot and I'm and I'm donating or I'm giving
• 11:12
Speaker 3: up this gun? You know, how do you know the
• 11:15
Speaker 3: history of that gun? How do you know where it
• 11:16
Speaker 3: can How do you know it wasn't stolen or something
• 11:18
  Speaker 3: like that.
• 11:19
Speaker 8: We don't check on that sort of thing. The police
• 11:23
Speaker 8: are aware of the event.
• 11:24
Speaker 3: Yeah, and uh, I remember you mentioned that last year
• 11:27
Speaker 3: that Charleston police department was a part of this.
• 11:28
Speaker 6: Event, right, and are supportive of it.
• 11:30
Speaker 8: Yeah, right, And we do record the serial numbers of
• 11:35
  Speaker 8: the guns.
• 11:36
Speaker 3: That was the question that that my coworker asked was
• 11:38
Speaker 3: about the serial numbers of the gun that so those
• 11:40
  Speaker 3: are recorded.
• 11:41
Speaker 8: Right, but they didn't ask for them last year. I mean,
• 11:43
Speaker 8: we we recorded them, and any event they would care
• 11:47
Speaker 8: to have them, yes, we would give it to them,
• 11:50
Speaker 8: but we don't associate it with an individual because the
• 11:53
  Speaker 8: relinquishment is voluntary.
• 11:55
Speaker 7: Yeah, and I think anonymous.
• 11:56
Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think it's interesting that you get the
• 11:58
Speaker 3: buy in, as you said, from from the police department. Now,
• 12:01
Speaker 3: this event's going on in Charleston that we're talking about,
• 12:04
Speaker 3: but and again it's going to be May third at
• 12:06
Speaker 3: Saint Mark's from one to three. But it's also you
• 12:09
Speaker 3: have another one in Shepherdstown. Is that right?
• 12:11
Speaker 6: There was one in shepherds There was one last October,
• 12:14
Speaker 6: but that was their second one, and so I would
• 12:17
Speaker 6: assume that they'll have more.
• 12:18
Speaker 3: And this is going on in how many states?
• 12:19
  Speaker 5: Now?
• 12:20
Speaker 7: Did you say at least twenty five?
• 12:21
Speaker 3: At least twenty five? What's your final message to people
• 12:24
Speaker 3: that are listening today that may be interested in this
• 12:26
Speaker 3: this is your final, your final free commercial for the
• 12:31
Speaker 3: eventual all three of you.
• 12:32
Speaker 6: You know, if you have a gun that you do
• 12:34
Speaker 6: not want and you're able to see if it's unloaded
• 12:37
Speaker 6: or not. Either way, you can put it in the
• 12:39
Speaker 6: way back of your car and come to Saint Mark's
• 12:41
Speaker 6: at one o'clock on a week from Saturday, and you
• 12:45
Speaker 6: can watch that gun begin the process of being transformed
• 12:48
Speaker 6: into a garden tool.
• 12:51
Speaker 8: We're a lovely, lovely necklace such as I am wearing.
• 12:54
Speaker 3: Okay on the rad we'll have to get we'll have
• 12:56
Speaker 3: to get a picture of that posted on the on
• 12:57
Speaker 3: social media. If you don't win that great, if you don't,
• 13:00
Speaker 3: If you don't mind that, and Robert, you want to
• 13:02
Speaker 3: add anything there, well, yeah, the.
• 13:06
Speaker 5: As it says, the guns to garden, but a lot
• 13:09
Speaker 5: of different things are made from the metal that you
• 13:14
Speaker 5: know was a firearm. Dina's jewelry is just one example.
• 13:19
Speaker 5: Raw Tools provided a host of jewelry and garden tools
• 13:25
Speaker 5: for sale at First Presbyterian Churches Hope Village last November,
• 13:32
Speaker 5: so people got to see the end product of what
• 13:36
Speaker 5: our first Guns to Garden event last May was able
• 13:40
  Speaker 5: to achieve.
• 13:41
Speaker 3: That's it's pretty nicely can piece of the jewelry there.
• 13:43
Speaker 3: As I said, I'll get a picture of them posted
• 13:45
Speaker 3: on the Dave Island Radio and at Dave A seventy
• 13:48
Speaker 3: on X. I appreciate to you guys being here. Is
• 13:50

Speaker 3: learning when you guys first reached out to me last

Speaker 3: year about coming on the show. You know, I'm not
• 14:21
  Speaker 3: gonna lie. I was like, I don't know if I
• 14:23
Speaker 3: want to do this. But then once I learned more
• 14:25
Speaker 3: about it, uh, and I learned it's strictly it's one
• 14:27
Speaker 3: hundred percent voluntary, you know, for anybody that wants to
• 14:30
Speaker 3: do this. And you had you had a great turnout
• 14:32
Speaker 3: last year. As you said for your first year, I'm

Speaker 3: good morning, welcome to the show.
• 17:50
Speaker 12: Oh hi, good morning. It's an honor to be with
• 17:52
  Speaker 12: you today.
• 17:53
Speaker 3: What was that all about.
• 17:57
Speaker 12: Well, so, first of all, I finally moved five eight
• 18:02
Speaker 12: number out from under Danny Jones. Yeah, most of a
• 18:05
Speaker 12: decade ago. My contact uh huh, and I put it
• 18:08
Speaker 12: on I put it on Dave Allen in my contacts,
• 18:10
Speaker 12: that's the current host of the show.
• 18:12
Speaker 3: Yeah, in the last five years.
• 18:15
Speaker 12: Accidentally called Dave allen cell phone number this morning.
• 18:17
  Speaker 11: Uh huh.
• 18:18
Speaker 12: So, uh, you didn't answer, by the way, you did
• 18:20
Speaker 12: not pick up. You just left me hanging.
• 18:22
Speaker 3: Well, I have my phone turned off. That's I mean,
• 18:24
Speaker 3: I have the silence Uh you know, have it have
• 18:26
  Speaker 3: it silence brand.
• 18:27
Speaker 12: Oh that's that's good for a peace of mind. Anyway,
• 18:29
Speaker 12: it was it was a challenge just connecting with you
• 18:31
Speaker 12: today through operator error, and that's why it's you know,
• 18:35
Speaker 12: it's a big deal to be here.
• 18:37
Speaker 3: Well, you're a little out of practice. Uh, and we're
• 18:39
Speaker 3: gonna talk about the legislative session a little bit. But
• 18:41
Speaker 3: you know you've been working. Obviously you can go to
• 18:44
Speaker 3: the website and you can listen to all of our
• 18:45
Speaker 3: radio stations and the things that you do. You've been
• 18:47
Speaker 3: working it. Uh. But but there is a little downtime
• 18:51
Speaker 3: allowed allowed for mister mackleheney, right, and and you and
• 18:54
Speaker 3: others and Steven and a million people that do this
• 18:56
Speaker 3: on a regular basis. You gotta gotta have a little
• 18:58
Speaker 3: downtime after the session to wind down a little man.
• 19:00
  Speaker 13: Right, You know.
• 19:03
Speaker 12: What happens usually is.
• 19:06
  Speaker 14: To do.
• 19:09
Speaker 12: Stuff assessments of what occurred and examinations of legislation, reminding
• 19:18
Speaker 12: yourself and others of things that got talked about early
• 19:20
Speaker 12: on that didn't pass. So there's a period of sort
• 19:23
Speaker 12: of reassessment after the session, which really also ideally would
• 19:28
Speaker 12: be time that you can could take a little time off,
• 19:31
  Speaker 12: But it often doesn't happen because it's it's a bit
• 19:34
Speaker 12: like now, why don't we just go through what what
• 19:36
Speaker 12: tornado just tore through here? And what damage did the
• 19:41
Speaker 12: political tornado create? Now, now it's a little more because
• 19:47
Speaker 12: we are you know, we are transitioning, but the legislative
• 19:50
Speaker 12: session is now left behind. We do expect to hot
• 19:54
Speaker 12: Morrissey summer, a long hot Morrissey summer of additional special sessions,
• 20:00
Speaker 12: but the legislature out of town doing no harm right now.
• 20:04
Speaker 12: Congress is currently out, so there has been some Congressional
• 20:09
Speaker 12: news during this break, but they're out out in communities
• 20:13
Speaker 12: and not doing congressional stuff. State Supreme Court not in
• 20:18
Speaker 12: right now, so a lot of we're kind of between
• 20:23
Speaker 12: things at this moment.
• 20:24
Speaker 3: I got you nine to twenty seven of the Dave

Speaker 3: info visits the Dirty Birds or Mountaineer a Little League
• 20:46
Speaker 3: Facebook pages. All right, good, I want to get into
• 20:49
Speaker 3: this now. The whole NIOSH thing in Morgantown Brad. NIOSH,
• 20:51
Speaker 3: of course, stands for the National Institute for Occupational Safety
• 20:54
Speaker 3: and Health, and they run a coal mine lung disease
• 20:58
Speaker 3: screening program, which is required under federal law. They also
• 21:02
Speaker 3: do a lot of a lot of research. Here now
• 21:04
Speaker 3: comes word that Senator Capito Brad has written a formal
• 21:08
Speaker 3: letter asking for a reversal of cuts to NIOSH and
• 21:13
Speaker 3: the union that represents those workers, praising the Senator for
• 21:17
Speaker 3: doing that. And in the meantime, a federal judge in
• 21:20
Speaker 3: Charleston said to have a hearing on May seventh concerning
• 21:23
Speaker 3: a lawsuit against RFK Junior over the cuts. Lots to
• 21:28
Speaker 3: unpack here, Brad, I'll let you start wherever you want.
• 21:31
Speaker 12: Yeah, that's that's there is a lot to unpack, you know. So,
• 21:34
Speaker 12: Niolosh is a significant employer in Morgantown and it does
• 21:39
Speaker 12: a lot of work on researching and making recommendations about
• 21:44
Speaker 12: ways to make workplaces safer. Among those things is UH
• 21:50
Speaker 12: screening and processing of black lung information. If a miner
• 21:56
Speaker 12: is suspected of having black lung, they'll get X rays
• 22:01
Speaker 12: and they will be assessed at NIOSH, probably in Morgantown.
• 22:06
Speaker 12: Niosh will do the screening itself, and then minors are
• 22:10
Speaker 12: determined to have black lung, they have the right to
• 22:15
Speaker 12: transfer to a job that is not dusty, to a
• 22:19
Speaker 12: job within their employer that is you know, safer for
• 22:22
Speaker 12: their physical condition that's not happening right now because Niosh
• 22:26
Speaker 12: has been those workers have been riffed in Morgantown reduction
• 22:31
Speaker 12: in force. They have not permanently lost their jobs yet.
• 22:35
Speaker 12: That's coming up in June. Right now, it's kind of
• 22:38
Speaker 12: an awkward middle phase. And you know, Senator Capito is
• 22:43
Speaker 12: concerned about that. She has been on the phone a
• 22:46
Speaker 12: couple of times with Robert F. Kennedy Junior, the new
• 22:49
Speaker 12: Health and Human Resources Secretary, who she helped confirm. So
• 22:55
Speaker 12: you know, I read into it the fact that she
• 22:58
Speaker 12: has now sent a formal letter. I mean, the phone
• 23:01
Speaker 12: calls didn't work. Is she just trying to formalize it
• 23:04
Speaker 12: a little more? Is she trying to communicate with constituents
• 23:08
Speaker 12: a bit more what what her activities are. But you know,
• 23:12
Speaker 12: Capital says, these programs at NIOSH and in Morgantown and
• 23:17
Speaker 12: the employees and the expertise they bring are important. And
• 23:22
Speaker 12: you know, if you love and respect what's hergin as
• 23:24
Speaker 12: coal miners, this is important to them.
• 23:26
Speaker 3: Well, in your story on the website again it was
• 23:29
Speaker 3: the lead story this morning, you've actually got a link
• 23:32
Speaker 3: to that letter. Surmise the letter in a you know,
• 23:36
Speaker 3: a sentence or two, Brad, what but basically is was
• 23:39
Speaker 3: the Senator saying here, so you.
• 23:42
Speaker 12: Know, to my ear, Capito is pricky balanced, and this
• 23:48
Speaker 12: is often what she says about controversial steps of the
• 23:52
Speaker 12: Trump administration. She begins by saying, even the president's vision
• 23:57
Speaker 12: to right size our government. Then she says she pivots,
• 24:01
Speaker 12: but I do not think eliminating the NIOSH coal programs
• 24:05
Speaker 12: and research will accomplish that goal. The Center continues by saying,
• 24:09
Speaker 12: the mission and work conducted by the specially trained NIOSH
• 24:13
Speaker 12: employees is not duplicative of any other government program, So,
• 24:17
Speaker 12: you know, trying to she is supportive of the Trump
• 24:24
Speaker 12: administration's work. This is a cabinet official Kennedy who she
• 24:31
Speaker 12: voted to confirm, and capitol has continued to express concern
• 24:37
Speaker 12: about the level of the national debt. But you know,
• 24:42
Speaker 12: again saying that these are not only West Virginia jobs,
• 24:45
Speaker 12: but that the health and safety of West Virginia coal
• 24:47
Speaker 12: miners is dependent on the work there. So you know,
• 24:52
Speaker 12: a bit of a tricky balancing act.
• 24:54
Speaker 3: Well in West Virginia. I mean you got to be careful, Brad,
• 24:57
Speaker 3: as you know, you cover these folks, and you got
• 24:59
Speaker 3: to be careful about doing anything that could even remotely
• 25:02
Speaker 3: be seen as critical of the Trump administration in the
• 25:05
Speaker 3: trumpiest state that there is. I mean, you got to
• 25:08
Speaker 3: be careful. But I think, and again, Senator Kapito is
• 25:12
Speaker 3: not the only one that's done this. I mean even
• 25:14
Speaker 3: a Congressman Rally Moore has expressed concerned. We had Senator
• 25:18
Speaker 3: Justice on the Metro News midday show last week, who used,
• 25:22
Speaker 3: you know, in the that Jim Justice style, we can't
• 25:25
Speaker 3: we got to be careful and not cut too close
• 25:27
Speaker 3: to the fence. That was a new one. I hadn't
• 25:29
Speaker 3: heard him say that when he said those exact words
• 25:31
Speaker 3: to President Trump about this so kind to kind of be,
• 25:34
Speaker 3: you know, careful. You could be on thin ice with
• 25:37
Speaker 3: West Virginians if you do anything that looks like you
• 25:39
Speaker 3: are criticizing or even questioning the Trump administration. In the meantime,
• 25:45
Speaker 3: switching gears who just a little bit, Brad the Governor
• 25:48
Speaker 3: was hanging out with RFK again yesterday. I wonder if
• 25:52
Speaker 3: he required a weigh in of the of Governor Morrisey yesterday.
• 25:56
  Speaker 15: Man.
• 25:57
Speaker 12: So that's a reference to some comments to exchange when
• 26:00
Speaker 12: RFK Junior came to West Virginia talk about with Morrissey
• 26:05
Speaker 12: to talk about the signing of West Virginia's bill banning
• 26:11
Speaker 12: certain artificial food dies, and there was some discussion of
• 26:15
Speaker 12: Governor Morrissey's wage. I watched via YouTube yesterday's appearance of
• 26:22
Speaker 12: Governor Morrissey in Washington. He was on stage with RFK
• 26:26
Speaker 12: Junior again at the federal action regarding food dies. And
• 26:30
Speaker 12: everyone should be really to know that there was no
• 26:33
Speaker 12: discussion of anybody's weight, you know what. Our RFK Junior
• 26:39
Speaker 12: was at the center of our fire conversation, and this
• 26:42
Speaker 12: was an appearance meant to deal with the national move
• 26:47
Speaker 12: on artificial food dies. But there was, you know, at
• 26:51
Speaker 12: least not on stage, not before the camera, any talk
• 26:55
Speaker 12: of these cuts in West Virginia that have occurred under
• 26:58
Speaker 12: the watch of our junior, the Niosh cuts. So it's
• 27:03
Speaker 12: interesting how RFK is at the confluence of these different events.
• 27:09
Speaker 12: The support by the governor and others on trying to
• 27:13
Speaker 12: get artificial food dies out of our diets, but the
• 27:16
Speaker 12: controversial steps of eliminating West Virginia jobs and enabling the
• 27:22
Speaker 12: agency that processes the health claims of miners, the miners
• 27:32
Speaker 12: that we love, respecting value who believe that they have
• 27:35
Speaker 12: black lung and whose medical records could be confirmed by
• 27:40
Speaker 12: Niosh if only NIOSH were doing its work.
• 27:43
Speaker 3: Talk have you with Brad mclhanney before we let you go?
• 27:46
Speaker 3: Did you happen to hear the conversation that Amanda and
• 27:50
Speaker 3: I had on the Midday show yesterday with Attorney General JB. Mccusky.
• 27:53
Speaker 3: Did you happen to hear any of that? Brad, humor
• 27:55
Speaker 3: me and tell me you did.
• 27:58
Speaker 12: I definitely did. Dave and I had a chance to
• 28:00
Speaker 12: definitely hear it because Sky was the Metro News backgrounder
• 28:07
Speaker 12: to hear raw audio of what he said to you
• 28:10
Speaker 12: again this morning on the morning News, but refresh my
• 28:13
Speaker 12: memory about what he said.
• 28:14
Speaker 3: Well, one of the things that we asked and we
• 28:16
Speaker 3: had spent about thirty minutes with the ag so we
• 28:18
Speaker 3: had various things we talked about. But one of the
• 28:20
Speaker 3: things that we talked about was this proposed meeting between
• 28:25
Speaker 3: the Attorney General, perhaps other agencies or other folks in
• 28:30
Speaker 3: state government with the nc double A over WVU being
• 28:34
Speaker 3: left out of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. And we
• 28:37
Speaker 3: asked him, Amanda ask him about that and he says,
• 28:41
Speaker 3: and again it was on the Metro News backgrounded this morning.
• 28:44
Speaker 3: He says that the NC Double A is coming to
• 28:47
Speaker 3: town and that they're going to sit down. I'm presuming
• 28:50
Speaker 3: with the Attorney General's office, perhaps others, maybe the Governor
• 28:53
Speaker 3: will be involved. I don't know. He's going to sit
• 28:54
Speaker 3: down and he wants answers, and I don't think he's
• 28:57
  Speaker 3: gonna I don't think, you know, mccuskey's a bulldog man.
• 28:59
Speaker 3: I don't think is going to give up until he
• 29:00
Speaker 3: gets answers from the NC double A.
• 29:05
Speaker 12: So I went to the press conference where Governor Morrissey
• 29:08
Speaker 12: and Attorney General McCuskey announced that they were questions of
• 29:14
Speaker 12: the NC Double A. That was, you know, just a
• 29:17
Speaker 12: day after the field had been announced and a day
• 29:22
Speaker 12: before the tournament began, and so it's, you know, good
• 29:28
Speaker 12: on them, I think to follow up and and continue
• 29:32
Speaker 12: to demand answers. I thought there might be no result
• 29:37
Speaker 12: at all given the timing. So it's good that they're
• 29:40
Speaker 12: sticking up with it.
• 29:41
  Speaker 3: Apparently they've got a meeting. I mean, that's what mccusky
• 29:44
Speaker 3: alluded to on the show yesterday. Apparently they're coming. They're
• 29:47
Speaker 3: coming to town and they're going to go hang out,
• 29:49
Speaker 3: maybe go to so hose and grab some dinner or something.
• 29:52
  Speaker 3: I don't know what they're gonna do, but they're coming
• 29:53
Speaker 3: to town apparently to meet with Attorney General McCaskey.
• 29:58
Speaker 12: Rebook him as a guest so that he can explain
• 30:00
Speaker 12: exactly how the NCAA comes up with its tournament field,
• 30:04
Speaker 12: because I think it's all a mystery to all of us.
• 30:07
Speaker 3: All right, what are you working on today, mister mac.
• 30:12
  Speaker 14: So.
• 30:12
Speaker 12: Governor Morrissey has a series of broadly and there is
• 30:18
Speaker 12: one he is traveling to Wheeling today, Independence Hall that
• 30:23
Speaker 12: that comes up at eleven. I am I am not
• 30:26
Speaker 12: in Wheeling, sir, so I'm hoping that that that is
• 30:29
Speaker 12: on the governor's YouTube channel. The Governor and his staff
• 30:35
Speaker 12: are good about say they're having things, but then they
• 30:40
Speaker 12: don't really give any hints about what the things are,
• 30:44
Speaker 12: so you have to sort of read into it. I
• 30:47
Speaker 12: would assume he is signing a bill and either it
• 30:51
Speaker 12: has something to do with Wheeling being significant, therefore he's
• 30:54
Speaker 12: gone on the road, or in this hall might mean
• 30:58
Speaker 12: that this is bill that will stake out turf to
• 31:03
Speaker 12: protect our freedoms. Therefore the Independence Hall. But I admire
• 31:10
Speaker 12: the administration's ability to keep the intrigue going by saying
• 31:14
Speaker 12: they're having events but not saying what the events are.
• 31:17
Speaker 3: We got big stuff, we just don't we're just not
• 31:19
Speaker 3: liberty to discuss what those big things are. And it
• 31:21
Speaker 3: sounded like, Brad, you had a little tongue in cheek
• 31:24
Speaker 3: there when you said something about liberties. There was that
• 31:27
Speaker 3: a little sarcasm I detected there.
• 31:31
Speaker 12: I don't know, I mean, well, so, yeah, freedoms is
• 31:34
Speaker 12: a word that you hear associated with a variety of legislation,
• 31:37
Speaker 12: and if you hear it often enough, then you know
• 31:40
Speaker 12: it becomes a part of your working vocabulary. But the
• 31:42
Speaker 12: Independence Hall location here makes me think maybe the governor
• 31:46
Speaker 12: has he's been signing or advancing policies, has been appearing
• 31:54
Speaker 12: at places that are meaningful. So he signed a school
• 31:58
Speaker 12: visiplum bill at Ripley Elementary, and I don't think the
• 32:03
Speaker 12: message was that the kids there need a little more disciplined,
• 32:05

Speaker 3: there is a slight chance, very slight, that their personal
• 47:19
Speaker 3: personal data could have been compromised. The fire departments not
• 47:22
Speaker 3: a letter to all the patients that fall into that category,
• 47:26
Speaker 3: people that have utilized the services, primarily the ambulance service.
• 47:30
Speaker 3: From what I understand, according to Jeff's story, they have
• 47:33
Speaker 3: sent out a letter to all of those patients explaining
• 47:39
Speaker 3: how it happened and what to do, how they fixed it,
• 47:44
Speaker 3: and what to do if they are concerned about a
• 47:47
Speaker 3: possible compromise of their important information on the surface, and
• 47:54
Speaker 3: again you can go read Jeff Chenkin's story wv metronews
• 47:57
Speaker 3: dot com under the surface. On the surface, rather, it
• 48:00
Speaker 3: doesn't appear like it was that that big of a deal.
• 48:06
Speaker 3: But in today's modern cyber world, you simply cannot be
• 48:11
Speaker 3: too careful. So that's why they did that. And again
• 48:15
Speaker 3: the stories posted at wvmetronews dot com if you want
• 48:19
Speaker 3: to read more about it. Older adult should protect themselves again,
• 48:22
Speaker 3: severe respiratory disease, talk to your doctor about flu, COVID
• 48:25
Speaker 3: nineteen and RSV vaccines risk. Let's do more get started
• 48:28
Speaker 3: at vaccines dot gov. Paid for by the US Department
• 48:31
Speaker 3: of Health and Human Services. Yesterday, we got a few
• 48:34
Speaker 3: texts after the show on my little I don't say rant.
• 48:38
Speaker 3: It wasn't that. Uh, it was just some of my
• 48:40
Speaker 3: comments that I made about people complaining about traffic, particularly
• 48:45
Speaker 3: in Tays Valley, which you know, again I'm partial to
• 48:48
  Speaker 3: it because it's where I live and I and I
• 48:50
  Speaker 3: and I battle it every day. I I just don't
• 48:54
Speaker 3: And I had some people reached out to me and uh,
• 48:56
Speaker 3: and and said things like, uh, well you must enjoy
• 48:59
Speaker 3: setting in traffic. Maybe you don't have anything better to do,
• 49:02
Speaker 3: and and well the answer is you're right, I don't. Uh,
• 49:05
Speaker 3: but I stay by what I said. Look if, if, if,
• 49:09
Speaker 3: your neighborhood wherever it is, is dealing with the traffic problem,
• 49:13
Speaker 3: generally speaking, that is a sign of a healthy economy.
• 49:17
Speaker 3: TJ Meadows walking into the studio right now, and TJ
• 49:20
Speaker 3: is probably saying, is this like groundhog Day? Because I
• 49:23
Speaker 3: left you at this time and you were talking about
• 49:25
Speaker 3: the same thing, and I come back in and you're
• 49:28
Speaker 3: still saying the same thing.
• 49:29
Speaker 7: Forgive me, I missed it. What we were we talking about.
• 49:31
Speaker 3: I was following up on some of the conversations about
• 49:33
  Speaker 3: traffic yesterday.
• 49:35
Speaker 18: I was just talking with Chris Lawrence in the hallway
• 49:38
Speaker 18: about the same thing. You know, he's a Day's Alley
• 49:41
Speaker 18: guy too, and we were we were talking about the
• 49:42
  Speaker 18: widening project.
• 49:44
Speaker 3: Okay, that's gonna be going on different.
• 49:46
Speaker 7: Thing, right, It's a whole different thing.
• 49:48
Speaker 18: Yeah. So like like down where the I guess the
• 49:51
Speaker 18: dairy Queen Scott Tays Elementary is familiar. You're my neck
• 49:54
Speaker 18: of the They're going to widen that sucker, out.
• 49:56
Speaker 3: It's my understanding. Think, are they going to compromise the
• 49:59
Speaker 3: dairy queen? Then that's what I'm hearing.
• 50:01
Speaker 18: If there's a couple of different options, and I think
• 50:03
Speaker 18: if one option is pursued over the other, I do
• 50:06
Speaker 18: think it would affect the dairy queen and it would
• 50:09
Speaker 18: have to be torn down, is my understanding.
• 50:11
Speaker 3: I could be wrong on that. I started messing with
• 50:13
  Speaker 3: people's blizzards. Man, it's a it's a it's a whole.
• 50:16
  Speaker 14: You know.
• 50:16
Speaker 18: And that's one of the old school dairy queens. It
• 50:18
Speaker 18: still looks like an old school dairy queens.
• 50:20
Speaker 3: So when somebody made into a drive through a couple
• 50:21
Speaker 3: of years ago, and so, uh, you know, I don't
• 50:24
Speaker 3: know if you want to take something like that away.
• 50:27
Speaker 3: I have heard rumor, I have heard that rebuilding that
• 50:30
Speaker 3: would not be economically feasible. Okay, and we'll keep an
• 50:33
Speaker 3: eye on it, because that's, as we said, that's your
• 50:35
Speaker 3: neck of the woods, my neck of the wood. That's
• 50:36
Speaker 3: the mean streets of Tayes Valley where you streets, not
• 50:39
Speaker 3: the mean streets of Tayese Valley where where I was that.
• 50:41
Speaker 3: I'm on the I'm on the I'm on.
• 50:42
Speaker 18: The you're the mayor of Tese Valley if we had,
• 50:44
Speaker 18: if Tayes Valley were incorporated. Uh, and maybe we should
• 50:47
Speaker 18: talk to someone about this, maybe we should start the movement.
• 50:51
Speaker 7: You would be the mayor of Tayes Valley. I have
• 50:53
Speaker 7: no doubt about that.
• 50:54
Speaker 3: Text here from somebody that lives in Taes Valley apparently
• 50:56
Speaker 3: that says we need traffic circles, roundabouts, roundabouts. That's what
• 51:00
Speaker 3: they're going to do. Well, listen, let me explain something.
• 51:03
Speaker 3: West Virginians can't navigate three way stops. Do you really
• 51:07
Speaker 3: want them to go? I mean you ever ever pulled
• 51:10
Speaker 3: up to a three way stop? I mean in West Virginia.
• 51:13
  Speaker 3: I mean it's not pretty.
• 51:15
Speaker 18: No, no, it's not. And I'm thinking of the I
• 51:17
Speaker 18: guess it's a four way stop. Actually right in Scott
• 51:20
Speaker 18: Depot where the Kroger and Chase Bank.
• 51:21
Speaker 3: That's the one I get in mind.
• 51:23
Speaker 18: Folks do not always navigate that very well. I'm a fan,
• 51:28
Speaker 18: actually of roundabouts. I used to to live in an
• 51:31
Speaker 18: area and work in an area quite a bit that
• 51:33
Speaker 18: had them, and so I'm used to them. I think
• 51:35
Speaker 18: once you get used to them, they're extremely valuable. And
• 51:39
Speaker 18: I like the way they flow. But to each his own.
• 51:42
  Speaker 18: I'm sure there'll be a learning curve.
• 51:43
Speaker 3: Well we have, we ain't learned it yet in West
• 51:46
Speaker 3: Virginia on how to navigate three way stops.
• 51:49
Speaker 7: Maybe there's a YouTube video out there for that.
• 51:51
Speaker 3: Yeah, so they can watch it while they're driving. That's good.
• 51:53
Speaker 3: That's that's exactly what we need.
• 51:55
Speaker 7: What do you goney that I've just ruined everything?
• 51:58
  Speaker 14: All right?
• 51:58
Speaker 3: What do you got on the show today? Buddy? Ten
• 52:00
Speaker 3: oh six? State Senator Jason Barrett.
• 52:01
Speaker 18: He was in DC yesterday with the Governor and RFK
• 52:04
Speaker 18: talking about red dye bands from a federal level.
• 52:06
Speaker 3: We'll talk with him.
• 52:07
Speaker 18: Ryan Schmels on Pete hegseeth I wrote about that today
• 52:10
Speaker 18: as well at wv Metronews dot com. That's at ten
• 52:12
Speaker 18: twenty three. Will Boye with First Energy on their response
• 52:16
Speaker 18: to all these outages and all the work they had
• 52:18
Speaker 18: to do. Coming up at ten thirty, eleven six. Brad
• 52:22
Speaker 18: Mack is in the house. Coming up at eleven thirty.
• 52:25
Speaker 18: WVUS Senior Director of Athletics, John Antonic on Mike Patrick
• 52:29
Speaker 18: and his passing. They were buds, so.
• 52:31
Speaker 3: We'll talk with him. You have big loss. Happy administrative
• 52:33
Speaker 3: professionals day. Couldn't do it without him, couldn't do it
• 52:36
Speaker 3: without him. All right, you can't do it without Murphy either.
• 52:38
Speaker 3: He's pulling the plug. All right, gotta go. I'll see
• 52:40
Speaker 3: you later today. Till then, have fun. I love somebody.
