Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Our Australia correspondent this morning, Your terror threat level is up, Donner.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Yes, So, the Prime Minister Anthony Albernesi has revealed that
- 0:08Speaker 2: Australia's national terror threat is now probable as a threat
- 0:12Speaker 2: of violence grows.
- 0:14Speaker 1: We also heard from.
- 0:15Speaker 2: Asia, which is the nation's peak. Security Intelligence Association says
- 0:19Speaker 2: the chance of a terrorist attack in Australia is now probable.
- 0:22Speaker 2: It's concerned about the rising threat of politically motivated violence.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Now the table of threat levels you might want to
- 0:30Speaker 2: know is at the very bottom, it's deemed not expected,
- 0:33Speaker 2: then possible. We're now on probable. It can also lift
- 0:37Speaker 2: to expected, and then the top of that table is certain.
- 0:41Speaker 2: So there is now deemed a greater than fifty percent
- 0:45Speaker 2: chance of an onshore attack in Australia. Now, the announcement
- 0:49Speaker 2: came as the PM was flanked by the ASIO Director
- 0:51Speaker 2: Mike Burgess and Attorney General Mark Drafers. The PM says
- 0:55Speaker 2: there's no evidence of a specific and immediate attack, but
- 0:58Speaker 2: he does say that also that probable does not actually
- 1:01Speaker 2: mean inevitable, and there's no actual intelligence about an imminent
- 1:06Speaker 2: threat or danger, but there is a need for a
- 1:09Speaker 2: higher level of preparedness for agencies and alertness for the public. Now,
- 1:14Speaker 2: as you know, we've seen a global rise in politically
- 1:16Speaker 2: motivated violence and extremism as that's been put to Australians
- 1:21Speaker 2: as well. So Asio says it's principal security concerns do
- 1:26Speaker 2: now involve the fact that Australia is more volatile and
- 1:30Speaker 2: more unpredictable, and hence this upgrade to the terror threat
- 1:35Speaker 2: being deemed probable. We also heard from the Opposition Peter
- 1:39Speaker 2: Dutton and the leader, i should say, and he said
- 1:42Speaker 2: that all Australians should pay attention about what is happening
- 1:45Speaker 2: in society. We have heard in some way a little
- 1:50Speaker 2: bit sort of calming because Asio also says, you know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: we have to be aware but not afraid. And yet
- 1:55Speaker 2: we hear it not in much detail, but there have
- 1:57Speaker 2: been eight incidents in four months that have been dis
- 2:00Speaker 2: rupted by the agencies. It was either an act of
- 2:02Speaker 2: terrorism or investigated for links to terrorism, and involved some
- 2:07Speaker 2: young people, some as young as fourteen to twenty one
- 2:11Speaker 2: years of age.
- 2:12Speaker 1: It's hard to know with that language. Don't whether to
- 2:14Speaker 1: be freaked out or not, but it sounds like they're
- 2:17Speaker 1: just being cautious at this time, done a Demayo, our
- 2:19Speaker 1: Australia correspondent. It is eleven away from six for more
- 2:23Speaker 1: from news talks it'd be listen live on air or
