- 0:00SPEAKER_01: Hey friends, and welcome to Mom Talk Maryland.
- 0:02SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Claire Duarte, founder of the Columbia Mom.
- 0:06SPEAKER_01: And this is your spot for real conversations, local love, and a whole lot of community.
- 0:10SPEAKER_01: Whether you're folding laundry, running errands, or hiding in your car for some peace and quiet, let's dive in.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm so excited to have you here, Teddy, and I'm so glad that we got to connect um and learn about your business because I feel like I mean I nerd it out, and that's part of what we're gonna do today, is um I love your story because I feel like there's a lot of similarities in our stories, and we have um a lot of similarities like in our background, and you know, I have a big love and a big heart for what you do, and I think it's so awesome and the community that you've built and just all the things that you're really doing.
- 0:46SPEAKER_01: And I think it's pretty incredible to be like helping support women in this like phase and stage of life, right?
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: Um, and so obviously, as a mom, as someone that has like pivoted in work and in life, like I know what it's like firsthand, but it can also feel so scary and super unknown when you're either at the cusp or even before that, when you feel like you're still in that gray space.
- 1:11SPEAKER_01: So um without further ado, let me pass it over to you, Teddy.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: Um, please tell us um who you are, what your business is.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Well, thank you for the intro and the kind words.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: Um I am Teddy.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: I am local, homegrown, raised, whatever you want to call it, Howard County, grown and raised.
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: Um and my business is called Beautiful Mess Living.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: I am a life and decision coach for women um who are basically in the thick of like raising their children, working, managing all the hats, doing all the things.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: And my work really is at the very end of the day to help women build their self-trust and confidence so that they are actually enjoying the life that they have built.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: And then that positivity can trickle down to the next generation for our kids to grow up having that kind of lifestyle of knowing that we are worthy and we are capable and we can not only have these great things, but actually enjoy them.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 2:21SPEAKER_01: And so well said.
- 2:23SPEAKER_01: And I love the title of your business.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: So um, how did you come up with that idea or that name?
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Yeah, um it's perfectly fitting for me because I'm like, I mean, obviously, such we're such millennials, right?
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: I mean, clearly in our vocabulary, but like the things that aren't aren't.
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: Um, so actually, I created the name a few years ago before I was a life coach.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: I was a run coach, and I was working with like a graphic artist to build my website.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And um her name was Creative Mess, and it gave me this idea of beautiful mess.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: So I was originally beautiful mess running, and then I since transitioned.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And I like the idea of like I live a lot of the and both, like your life can be beautiful and absolutely messy at the same time, and so I love just having like the the juxtaposition of that.
- 3:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, oh my gosh, the and both.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: That's such a big, like it's that it's like a full state sentence right there.
- 3:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean the and both is such a full sentence.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Um, all right.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: So then okay, walk us through, take us back a little bit, because obviously one of my favorite things to do on the podcast is like I love to know everyone's, you know, why, like why and kind of like their origin story, like how you got started, because I know um, and you know, that's kind of the nod to the the beautiful mess, creative mess, right?
- 3:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: Um, tell us like how how did you get started?
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: How you know, tell us the roadmap to how you came about into the life coaching, because I know it was not a linear path.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: So there's sort of like two parts to my story.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: I guess as anyone's probably has multiple parts, but part one is just this idea that growing up, I was very just not confident.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: I had a lot of insecurities.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: I it took me a really long time to start believing in myself and believing that I didn't need to adapt who I was to like fit in.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: Um, as I got older and worked on that, it got better.
- 4:41SPEAKER_00: And now that I have kids, I'm like, well, I don't want them to go through what I went through.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: And the best way to help guide them is to model for them that I appreciate myself as I am, that my time and my energy is important, that I don't need to gain approval from everyone else to make the decision that I want to make.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: And so that is sort of the beginning of me having this idea of like it first started with fitness, right?
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Like I was a young mom.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: I had three very tiny kids, and I was taking the time to go for a run because I wanted to get a certain time at a half marathon, and yeah, that can be viewed negatively from society as like you're taking time away from your kids to do this.
- 5:31SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Um, and so I wanted to like change that story for myself first, and then for others, and so that's sort of like one side of my story.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: The other side is that I um am also a pediatric nurse practitioner.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: I clearly went through a lot of schooling to go into that and a um industry.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: I really love that work, and it there's the and again.
- 6:01SPEAKER_00: And I really love that work, and it's hard to do that work and live the family life that my husband and I wanted for our family.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Right obviously, it works for some people.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: For us, it was more challenging.
- 6:20SPEAKER_00: Even when I was working more full time, I I was just I either was home thinking like, oh, I'm leaving my coworker, letting my coworkers down, or I was at work thinking, oh, I'm letting my kids down.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: Like there was I never felt good in either spot.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: No.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: Um then COVID happened.
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: I had a three-year-old, a one-year-old, and I was pregnant with our third.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: Of course, and we had no child care.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And I was working in the hospital.
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Oh, so I was really very fortunate in the fact that for like a month or two, I was able to work from home.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: And then yeah, after that, I had to go back in, and there was just so much stress and burnout associated with that.
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: And at the time, I had my own life coach.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and she absolutely helped me walk through this transition of going.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: I basically left my original position.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: The way I describe it to people who don't know the medical world is that I am now a sub.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Like I sub in nursing when someone is out.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: And um so it was sort of like push comes to shove.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: But what guided me through that was the fact that this woman, this coach that I had, not only helped me like dig out what I really wanted, but she helped me keep accountable to myself.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Like nowhere in there did she tell me what to do.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: And looking back, I think I probably wanted to leave for a while, but I didn't have the guts or the accountability to do it until I had that mirror in my face of like you say you want a certain life, but you're not doing it.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Well, and I feel like because I've I've also been the mom in the position of like, you know, you're miserable, right?
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: And it took me a while to even grasp the concept that leaving, dropping hours, you know, whatever would and could be an option because I had so much like guilt and pain sort of associated with that.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: Some of that is societal and cultural, some of that is um, you know, like I grew up in a home of two working parents.
- 8:48SPEAKER_01: My mom like literally just retired this year, like close to 45 years, you know.
- 8:54SPEAKER_01: Part of, you know, uh it's part of it was modeling, you know what I mean?
- 8:58SPEAKER_01: So there's many factors, right?
- 9:00SPEAKER_01: Um, but I remember having so much much guilt in thinking about that, you know, and you know, of course, and then you know, of course, financial reasons too.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: You've got kids and you're trying to like manage to juggle the house.
- 9:13SPEAKER_01: And um, like at the time when I was stepping away, we were in a position where where we could, but so that wasn't necessarily the leading factor.
- 9:22SPEAKER_01: So it was just meant the mental burden to kind of even get to that place to even like swallow it, think about it, kind of accept that part of me.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: I think that you know, once I started to, I think digest it, right?
- 9:38SPEAKER_01: And then it allowed me to the space to be like, okay, I think that I want, I know that stepping away would be helpful, beneficial.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but there was still pain and guilt associated with it to even then have the guts to bring it like up to my husband, and let alone not even like the guts to bring it up to my employer was whole separate, right?
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: So much, so much.
- 9:58SPEAKER_00: And I like that, I feel like that feeling of guilt isn't something we talk about all the time.
- 10:05SPEAKER_00: And it's something that like that is I could put those words in my mouth, like that is my story too.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: There was so much guilt associated with that.
- 10:14SPEAKER_00: Not only did I like go through a ton of schooling that I then was like, okay, now we're gonna right.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: But it's also like depending what field you're in, you've people can people look down on that type of thing, or at least we perceive it that way.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: We right.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: I don't know that people actually do.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Well, I think to you like for when we were in those positions, we our perception is that all of a sudden we are thinking and assuming that all the eyes are on us, right?
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Our husband, our employers, our um, our coworkers that are in the field, our you know, even like old mentors, like you know what I mean, like family members or or even just like your friends, because you think like up, you know, up until this point of life, right?
- 11:05SPEAKER_01: We've gone through high school, we've gone through college, we've gone through additional schooling to kind of keep rising up, rising above, right?
- 11:12SPEAKER_01: And you didn't go through all of that to like not be successful in a way.
- 11:18SPEAKER_01: So even though, even though our female friends, like like we know would agree, it just it does for whatever reason, in those moments, it feels so painful to think of the idea of stepping away.
- 11:29SPEAKER_00: I think it, I think absolutely.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: And that's where like doing some of that deeper work, I think is really important because otherwise it'll just eat at you.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: And the fact of the matter, like for me at the end of the day, what it always came back to, like, no matter how painful it was to go to my employer and tell them like that, I still remember like the feelings of that day and how horrible it was.
- 11:54SPEAKER_00: But at the bottom line, I was like, I don't want this life for my family, I want this life for my family.
- 12:02SPEAKER_00: And then you realize that like people support you, people surprise you, you know.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: They really do.
- 12:10SPEAKER_01: And I was gonna ask, like, when you and again, everyone's situation when they tell their employer is a little bit different because it sometimes depends on the workplace environment and um the culture and stuff like that.
- 12:19SPEAKER_01: But how did you feel once you tell told your employer?
- 12:23SPEAKER_01: Um, so my story.
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Again, this can be complicated, it's not always, you know, like my story's a little had a little hiccup in it in that I like went in with my plan.
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: Right, yeah, we do.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: I was like, I'm here, I'm giving my two weeks.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: It felt horrible.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: And she was like, Well, just so you know, like you have to give four months or like something like that.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: It was like, oh, it's not just gonna be it.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: I was like, okay, so we had to like really work together to come up with something, and um, and it took it took a while to feel good about it.
- 12:59SPEAKER_00: Like there definitely was a release, but I will say when I finally had transitioned, we again this was 2020.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I did this like end of summer, early fall.
- 13:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:19SPEAKER_00: And after I transitioned, we took a trip to the beach.
- 13:24SPEAKER_00: We had like somewhere where there was like no one else, we weren't near anyone.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: We were like in a place by ourselves, and like that was such a magical trip for me in the sense that I was I am here, I am with my family, I'm doing what I need to be doing.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: And so, like the relief, I don't feel like it was like I told her and then I felt good, right?
- 13:47SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: But I did have a moment where it was like, okay, this is right.
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:55SPEAKER_01: I know, and some there's no timeline for that feeling, right?
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Some because like I said, it depends on the employer in the situation.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Like, I remember for me, like um, you know, I remember having several conversations with my therapist about it because you know, it was in the thick of like that mental health piece.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Um, not necessarily like career was part of the puzzle, but like that wasn't necessarily the piece that we were solving.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: We were solving like the mental health issue that I was kind of going through at the time, right?
- 14:22SPEAKER_01: And so to help that, we had to come up with a solution for the and that so you know, and you know, and one of the solutions was was um either stepping away or cutting back and the time, and then you know, again, once once once things stabilized for me, then I was able to revisit it and yes, think and do more with it.
- 14:42SPEAKER_01: But um, talking to my husband, I was incredibly surprised with his response.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: And then telling my employer, I remember the relief I felt, and like again, not everybody has that immediate sort of relief.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's like I I do know like when I felt that relief, I was like, this is right.
- 14:59SPEAKER_01: You know, and I didn't like it's not like I stepped away from my job, but it was like at that moment, but it was like because again, I had more guilt when the like the day finally came.
- 15:08SPEAKER_01: But yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Once one, because knowing like it was fortunately for me well received, um, as as hard as it was, and that for me was like the moment where I could be like, okay, like a lot.
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 15:29SPEAKER_00: No, and I think it's really interesting that you say that because I talk about this a lot with decision making.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: I am just making sure my mic is still connected.
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: I mean it looks it sounds like it is.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, I think so.
- 16:05SPEAKER_01: All right, I was just making sure.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: Um, because like like a thing popped up on my phone is like connect with my phone.
- 16:11SPEAKER_01: I was like, no, like why would why would that be an option?
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: Okay, sorry, continue.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: No, no, no, I was just saying I think that it's really interesting that you bring that up because one of the things I talk about with decision making is well, two things, but one of them is that a lot of times you don't know until you've made the decision, and then so like we're waiting for certainty that isn't gonna come until it's already done.
- 16:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 16:38SPEAKER_00: And then it's the idea of like having enough self-belief and self-trust to know that whichever way it goes, you can figure it out and manage it.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 16:49SPEAKER_00: Oh my goodness.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:51SPEAKER_01: Um, okay, so yeah.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: So you were working as a nurse, you stepped away.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: Um, you were obviously you sound like you were passionate into running because you talked about that, like, you know, and that's kind of what you're doing also in the season of life.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: Um, and then and then you started your running coaching business, right?
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I started that.
- 17:12SPEAKER_00: I really loved having my own business, like getting to bring my creative side back in and getting to help women.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: Um, and then I added in personal training.
- 17:24SPEAKER_00: And so for a while I was doing strength coaching as well.
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: And it just wasn't like I'm like an in-depth talker.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Like, I want to know your story.
- 17:34SPEAKER_00: I want to do things, like, don't go with me with like the surface level stuff.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 17:40SPEAKER_00: And so, and it was just so glaringly obvious how connected like the rest of the the rest of your life is when you're trying to reach a running goal, right?
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: And I felt like it wasn't within my realm to be able to dive into that people, to dive into that with people, both from like the way the business was built didn't really give me space to like have these other conversations with women.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: Um, and I also coming from the medical field, like I like to have I like to have the letters behind my name to do something right.
- 18:17SPEAKER_00: And so right, right.
- 18:19SPEAKER_00: Um, and so I had still been working with my coach for a long time, and she was like, you would be great at this.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: And I was like, and I'm like a do-it kind of person.
- 18:30SPEAKER_00: I was like, you know what?
- 18:31SPEAKER_00: I think you're right.
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: And so I started researching um like certification programs for coaching, and I found this amazing program that is like women-owned, women-run, very like uh women plus positive.
- 18:49SPEAKER_00: And so I just did it.
- 18:52SPEAKER_00: I was like, you know what?
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: I'm doing this.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: I said to my husband, it was one night a week.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: And I guess at this point he's like used to me doing whatever adventure I think I should do.
- 19:00SPEAKER_01: I think, yeah, we are our husbands probably need a support group that my husband's slightly introverted that he would still not want to go to.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: But yeah, he's like that's his tolerant.
- 19:10SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't I would say he tolerates me well, but that's even like uh a rough way of explaining it.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: But yeah, used to it is probably the better way.
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know those memes that are like you, there's about seven seconds in between like me having an idea and you being able to say no before I'm already off doing it.
- 19:26SPEAKER_00: Like that is me.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: That yeah, and even if you do say no, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:33SPEAKER_01: Right, right.
- 19:34SPEAKER_00: So, um, so yeah, so then I started doing the coaching program.
- 19:39SPEAKER_00: I loved the way that I got to interact with women so much, and I really just was like the running stopped doing it for me in the same way.
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: And so I I slowly transitioned out of that role, but I did transition everything just to the life coaching.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: So then, okay, so yeah, so we we had this evolution of the of the run coaching.
- 20:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: And how did it go?
- 20:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, from run coaching into life coaching.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: I mean, I can kind of see how the dots can be connected, but yeah.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: So there was this little in-between where I was creating strength programs that were virtual, like think beachbody, but me.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 20:23SPEAKER_00: Did I tell you that I hold on.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: Did I tell you that I used to do beach body?
- 20:29SPEAKER_01: I can't remember if we said that or not.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: I can't remember if we brought that up.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Um, hashtag this is my sorry for the things that I said when I was a beachbody coach.
- 20:36SPEAKER_01: Um obviously, I think we've all been there.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: All like with the whole MLM world, you know what I mean?
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: It's not an MLM, like, oh god, I feel like I have trauma from that.
- 20:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's one of those crazy things.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: Like, I loved it when I was in it, you know what I mean?
- 20:50SPEAKER_01: Granted, like it obviously kept me very like consistent and it was good for that season of life.
- 20:55SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, blah, blah, blah.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: But but yeah, so you know, virtual home workouts, things like that.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: I created this strength program where I was you would sign up for like the month or longer, but like the month was the minimum you could sign up for.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: And then you would get three workouts a week sent to you every week that were like videos of me doing the workout, talking you through.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: And so because I was like on video, I found myself coaching women through like mindset work of while they were doing the physical work.
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: And so it felt in an odd way like a bridge.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Like, even though there wasn't someone responding to me on the other side, I was really like using a lot of those skills.
- 21:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 21:45SPEAKER_00: Um, and people really liked that part of it.
- 21:48SPEAKER_00: And so then I just I don't know, I just was like that started like becoming more taxing because.
- 22:00SPEAKER_00: Like harder started burning me out from fitness.
- 22:03SPEAKER_00: And I was like, I I want fitness for me because it's been so helpful.
- 22:08SPEAKER_00: And I don't want that to be like something that I don't enjoy anymore.
- 22:12SPEAKER_01: And so I feel like I can so relate to that being again.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I was never like a certified fitness coach or anything like that.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: I did like the beach body thing for like five years or something like that.
- 22:22SPEAKER_01: So I can kind of relate to that feeling of like I love working out and blah, blah, blah.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Um, but then yeah, when you're in that position, like, yeah, it just becomes it, yeah, it can become a lot because you feel like you're you're running a business and you're having to do all these things, and you're you're doing more than what you used to do, which was I used to run or work out because I loved it, and now you're in a different seat.
- 22:44SPEAKER_01: So yeah.
- 22:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:45SPEAKER_00: And so as I was slowly building the life coaching and going through the program, I like slowly petered out programs.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: So they kind of like, yeah.
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:58SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: Um all right.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: So okay, so then tell us about tell us about your business.
- 23:05SPEAKER_01: Tell us um excuse me, sorry.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Um, what who do you primarily serve?
- 23:11SPEAKER_01: What what are your services and how like how does it all work?
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so um, okay, let me try and make it like not a firm or answer.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: So women, let's start with high functioning, capable, like driven women who I would say I typically work with women who have school age children, although that's not like there are not all the breadth is wider than that, but that is majority of women.
- 23:41SPEAKER_00: Um majority working moms, which was not something I anticipated at first.
- 23:47SPEAKER_00: Like I really wanted to help women who were in like COVID-era teddy.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, right, right, right.
- 23:53SPEAKER_00: Like they're helping people climb out.
- 23:55SPEAKER_00: And so that is part of what I do, but I have found more women interested who are sort of in that, like a little bit of that next phase, yeah, where you can like think again a little bit.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: Um, so I work with women both one-on-one and through a group community that I created because I found so many women were interested in what other women were doing.
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: They were interested in hearing other women's stories, feeling like they were not alone in all of these things that go through our head.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: And um so initially I had started just like doing one-on-one, but I had so much interest in a community that I was like, let's just do it.
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: Um, so I now do both, and it's really fabulous.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: I work with women.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: Um, it's all virtual, and and I have women that are not even like I have plant multiple clients that are not in Maryland.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: Like it's all we're all over.
- 24:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I was gonna say, because it's all virtual, right?
- 24:57SPEAKER_00: It's all virtual.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: And um, so that is that is pretty cool too.
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: And so we work on anything from as big as like, is this the career that I want to keep doing?
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: To as small as like, I want to help my kids be more independent and make their own breakfast.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: And then like everything in between.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: We do a lot of work around um the mental load and not only just how like hard it is, but how we realize it affects everything else.
- 25:34SPEAKER_00: It causes resentment with our partners, it causes resentment with our kids, it causes us to be exhausted and carve pumpkins with our kids, but be like hating it the whole time instead of actually like enjoying getting to carve pumpkins with our kids, right?
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: And so um it's really a breadth of things, but at the end of the day, it's creating more of those moments of joy and knowing that you are not alone going through all this.
- 26:05SPEAKER_00: Like, we've all been raised in this society where we believe that our productivity is our worth, right?
- 26:09SPEAKER_00: Where we believe that we need to like one up, where we believe that we need to be perfect.
- 26:15SPEAKER_00: And that is again why I love having the word mess in my like sometimes the mess, like sometimes the messy moments are the best part.
- 26:26SPEAKER_01: And I know or you need the mess to like kind of keep moving forward, yeah.
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: And so um, so we meet virtually the group community, also has a Slack space.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Um so that like if something happens in between a call or if you're working through something, you don't have to wait until the next call to like reach out.
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: And so like someone came in the other night and was like, guys, I just handled a situation totally differently than I would have handled it.
- 26:54SPEAKER_00: There was some baseball mom drama, and I usually am just like people pleasing about it, but I actually stood up and said, I'm not gonna get in the middle of this.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: And she was like, and then I woke up the next day and like got to move on with my day, and I didn't spend hours like rethinking my response and rethinking this stuff.
- 27:11SPEAKER_00: And so um, so that's like the space is there on the in-between two, which is nice, and then it feels really like community at that point because you have access to each other, right?
- 27:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's so incredible.
- 27:26SPEAKER_01: I feel like those are such like really cool um moments, and um, and I'm I just think it's so awesome what you've built and what you created.
- 27:35SPEAKER_01: So it's like you know, so you've got virtual sessions.
- 27:37SPEAKER_01: So I'm guessing are these are these one-on-one and group or and or what's you know what I mean?
- 27:42SPEAKER_01: Like if someone were to like come to you and kind of get started, what does that look like?
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so it would depend, obviously.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Like, first, what I do is we talk one-on-one.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: And just figure out like what you're looking for, what your life looks like, and I will tell you, like, if I think one or the other makes more sense.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Um, even with the group, you get an intake one-on-one.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so I can like we can get you started.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: And then if there are some women who like do the group but get a once-a-month one-on-one because they just like want like that little bit extra of like devoted time.
- 28:25SPEAKER_00: And there are plenty of women who start one-on-one and do like four months like that and then transition into the community.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: Okay, so yeah.
- 28:36SPEAKER_00: It's it's really, and then I, you know, I also do these like one off, like right now, I'm doing like a mental load clean out before the holidays call.
- 28:46SPEAKER_00: That's cool.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: And so it's just a one-off call.
- 28:51SPEAKER_00: And we go through this like process that I this like formula process that I've worked out to sort of like get the mental load decreased so that you can actually enjoy the holidays a little bit instead of just like literally trying to survive like a chicken with your head cut off.
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: And again, like you want to enjoy you want to enjoy hanging the Christmas lights and not just be like pissed.
- 29:17SPEAKER_01: Right, right, right, right.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: So, real quick, yeah.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: Now that I've got like we've got an understanding of like what your business is, how it works, and what you do, right?
- 29:25SPEAKER_01: And because we we talked about this uh, you know, for a while, um, like on our first call, right?
- 29:30SPEAKER_01: And yeah, um, and my audience generally knows this, but like I, you know, I also have a master's degree in counseling psychology.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: I also get a therapist, so I have a big like passion for that world and know it's like to like pivot because I didn't end up becoming a licensed therapist, yeah.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: Spoiler alurk.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: Um, but I, you know, I spent years in that field, yield years in that industry, still have my own therapist, blah, blah, blah.
- 29:54SPEAKER_01: But can you speak to real quick?
- 29:56SPEAKER_01: Um, because I know you also you also come from the medical field.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: Um and you know, speak to the mental health.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: Obviously, I think there's a clear mental health component in the work that you do, but there's obviously a clear distinction between life coaching and therapy.
- 30:14SPEAKER_01: And um, and obviously I think they go beautifully together.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: But how do you kind of balance that um with your clients?
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: Because it's obviously again, I this is also become like I used to be an executive function coach, so I also very much know what that's like too.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: And you know, it was always wonderful when my clients did have like mental health providers, they didn't always, you know what I mean?
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: But it's like it's that hard line of like how do you balance and like maintain and address um, I don't want to say certain symptoms, but things that are kind of coming in, you know what I mean?
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: And how do you manage that with your clients?
- 30:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and that's a really good question because I think for people who aren't like us and haven't been in that world, they don't understand the difference.
- 30:56SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: Like they might come to you.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Now, granted, I know you as a pro medical professional know how to refer.
- 31:04SPEAKER_01: That that's not wasn't necessarily the question or um whatever, because obviously I know you you know how to do that, but I know for a lot of people, they might um I I want any mom that's listening, you know, obviously it's a big advocate for like mental health, want them to always make sure you're getting your mental health resources and those things.
- 31:22SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, like in a similar tone, sorry, this is sort of related but unrelated.
- 31:27SPEAKER_01: Like you always hear the term like business is personal, right?
- 31:30SPEAKER_01: I kind of think like, well, this is sort of that same thing of like these life things are always personal too.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: So emotions and the mental side are always still gonna come in.
- 31:40SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I think there's always that part of me is like, I never want people, I always, as much as I want people in life coaching, I never want that to be the replacement for a hundred percent.
- 31:51SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 31:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I was going a little bit.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: So I am very open with my clients about that from the get-go.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: Um, I love a woman who has a therapist alongside me.
- 32:04SPEAKER_01: Like that is the it's the best way to get started because you're like, okay, you know what I mean?
- 32:09SPEAKER_01: You know that you can kind of like be balanced moving forward.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: And I think, and there are moments when, so that being said, I'm also a very empathetic person.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: Oh, yeah.
- 32:20SPEAKER_00: I also work in pediatric oncology.
- 32:24SPEAKER_00: I am practiced at having hard conversations, at having emotions be a part of the conversation.
- 32:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, for sure.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: And so I do think that that has aided my ability to like, I can hold space for that.
- 32:38SPEAKER_00: Oh, but more.
- 32:40SPEAKER_00: My job is to then help you figure out what you're gonna do with it.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 32:44SPEAKER_00: Whereas, like, then if you want to like, like you absolutely should also sit in it and take it to your therapist, right?
- 32:52SPEAKER_00: Right, exactly.
- 32:53SPEAKER_01: And that's the part, like, I know you know how to handle that and address it is more so for any moms or women that might be listening.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: And for, I mean, one, I want the takeaway, I want them to be excited about the opportunity to potentially work with you and do these things, but knowing that meant I mean, regardless of like whether you have a therapist or not, mental health is going to enter the room because mental health and emotion is going to enter the room.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: And I think why you and I, again, we're very similar in that the sense of like I think life coaching, executive function coaching is yeah, has a wonderful appeal because it's very action-oriented, right?
- 33:28SPEAKER_01: And and obviously, you know, we're very like, you know, I'm an Aries, I'm very like oh wait, I'm an Aries too.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Wait, what's I'm April 1st.
- 33:39SPEAKER_01: April 15th.
- 33:40SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, that was my due date.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's cool.
- 33:43SPEAKER_01: That's so funny.
- 33:44SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh.
- 33:45SPEAKER_01: Okay, well, this just makes so much more sense.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 33:47SPEAKER_01: Um, so yeah, so very action-oriented.
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: So when I again, my my friend who started the um executive function coaching business, yeah, I was so excited because I was like, what is this coaching thing that you're doing?
- 33:58SPEAKER_01: And when she told me about it, I was like, oh, I want to do that.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: Like, that sounds awesome.
- 34:01SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, again, love and clearly majorly, I'm like I said, six plus years in therapy.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: Like um, you know, so anyway, so I think, and and that's why that's what women should still be excited about the prospect of working with you and doing things like that.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: Because um, you know, while obviously emotions enter the room, mental um things will enter the room because when you're having those conversations about mental love, about parenting, about work, they're all intricately tied to that mental um process in our minds.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: But I think that's the beautiful part is that, like, again, unlike you know, uh uh, you know, your therapist and other mental health providers, is like you get to kind of talk through potential action steps and how to kind of help move the needle, of course, with and when they're ready, right?
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: Like that's the whole thing, right?
- 34:54SPEAKER_01: Readiness is always a factor.
- 34:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, definitely.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: And I have a client very recently who honestly came into my group program, like, my life is good, like this things are fine, but something about this intrigues me.
- 35:08SPEAKER_00: And the farther we got into it, the more she was like, Oh, I'm holding on to resentment, I'm holding on to like sadness.
- 35:18SPEAKER_00: I am like I'm realizing that my kids are gonna be off to college in seven years, and I want to be able to enjoy that time.
- 35:26SPEAKER_00: And and so this almost plays like an add against coming toward me, but like things started to fall apart a little bit in order for her to actually get to where and so she'll bring in conversations, and I'm like, part of that conversation goes to your therapist, and part of the conversation with me is like, okay, so what are we gonna do about that?
- 35:48SPEAKER_01: Right, because that that's the the that's the action piece, right?
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: You you can sit and hold space, and I'm sure plenty of sometimes because sometimes, like I said, you know, um, and it's it's kind of like the vice versa with my therapist.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Like, sometimes, like, if I'm a little bit more stable, we might not be, you know, spending as much time in that um yeah, cognitive dissidence.
- 36:07SPEAKER_01: We can actually talk a little bit more structurally about different things, right?
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: And that's not inherently her role, but that's just how it goes, right?
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: You can hold space.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: And I don't think this is ever uh uh a thing, like quote unquote against you.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: It's just part of it.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: It that's why I like this conversation so that people are aware that right, right.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: And the fact is, just like you said, sometimes we as women we don't know what's gonna necessarily emotionally come up for us.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: Sometimes, like, you know, we could be completely fine, and then we're kind of starting this process, and it maybe it could be a beautiful thing that she does get like a therapy referral.
- 36:38SPEAKER_00: And so that's what I actually I say it's against me, but it's not no because I think the fact of the matter is like she came into it being like my life is fine, and she's leaving it like the goal is for life to be great, yeah, not fine, right?
- 36:56SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like we yeah, why are we okay with fine?
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: Right is this idea, and so a lot of women come to me and they're like your work sounds great, and like I'll talk to you again, you know, when things settle down.
- 37:14SPEAKER_00: And it's like, no, I'm gonna help the things settle down, right?
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Like that is that is the work.
- 37:21SPEAKER_00: Um and so most of the women that I work with aren't they're not like falling apart people, they're people that are like, my life is good, right, and I want more.
- 37:32SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: And that, and that to me, so that's the benefit of working with a life coach, right?
- 37:36SPEAKER_01: Because yeah, you're you're you're doing, right?
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: You're you're doing, you're at some level of readiness to take action, and take action is gonna look very different for everybody.
- 37:47SPEAKER_01: Like take action can be as teeny tiny as little baby steps, but it's still taking steps in some capacity, you know, and there's a big spectrum of that, right?
- 37:57SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: But it's this, but yeah, it's this idea of action, this idea of of momentum, right?
- 38:03SPEAKER_01: Whereas therapy is, I don't like to say that it's the opposite, that it's this stalled place, but it's a it's a point of introspection and examination, yeah.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and um, and that means that's again, it's a beautiful thing.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: They go together so beautifully, and that's why just like the same thing as like when I had my EF clients and they had therapy, I was like, God bless, this is gonna be good.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Yes, I know.
- 38:26SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, absolutely, absolutely.
- 38:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:30SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness.
- 38:31SPEAKER_01: So um so you've got this great community, and you know, like I said, I I had to nerd out hard on on the mental health piece because like I said, I feel like, yeah, just because you you talked about like, you know, these different, you know, things that are gonna come up for people uh in sessions, and you know, I think it's a great thing to balance.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: And yeah, but let me ask you this.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: What is your what's your favorite kind of thing that you get to work on with your clients?
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: Like what what what do you get like most excited about?
- 39:02SPEAKER_01: You know, like I don't know.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: I like whether it's I don't know, whether it's like, oh my god, I love when we get to like work on their calendar or their to-do list, or I don't know, what do you get like yeah, really excited?
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: What do I nerd out over?
- 39:16SPEAKER_00: I know.
- 39:17SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's a hard question because cliche enough, like I really like a lot of it.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I do get super excited when someone comes and says, I said no to something and I didn't worry about it for hours.
- 39:39SPEAKER_00: Or because it's not just the fact that they said no to the thing they didn't want to do, it's the fact that they like listened to themselves, yeah, and then felt certain enough with who they are that they could say no and be okay.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 39:54SPEAKER_00: So it's those moments when I can see like the actual changes that I really love.
- 40:01SPEAKER_00: Um and I am here all day to talk about like self-care is not just a face mask.
- 40:12SPEAKER_00: Like I love a face mask, I will do a face mask, right?
- 40:16SPEAKER_00: Hands down.
- 40:17SPEAKER_00: And if that's the only thing we're doing to take care of ourselves, like we're missing the mark somewhere.
- 40:23SPEAKER_00: And I truly think that then our kids are watching, right?
- 40:28SPEAKER_00: And so I actually had um a moment this week where one of my kids, I won't get very specific because they like hate when I bring them up, but um had an opportunity to do something that she my husband and I probably would have liked her to try.
- 40:45SPEAKER_00: And she was like, gave us her pros and cons, talked it through with us, then asked for 24 hours to think about it, and then came to us with a settled decision that like wasn't necessarily what we would have thought.
- 41:03SPEAKER_00: And the bottom line was like, this feels better for me.
- 41:07SPEAKER_00: This gives me a little bit more like energy and rest.
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: And I was like, like I we gifted that to you, like that was something that like not everyone can do as an adult.
- 41:23SPEAKER_00: No, and so it just like reminds me when I see things like that that the work it's not just about us, no, it's right, it is about and if my kids hadn't seen me taking care of myself in the same way, would they have then been able to do that?
- 41:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 41:42SPEAKER_00: I don't know, but I know so like I do know about it.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I know, I know, we do, we totally do.
- 41:49SPEAKER_01: Like, I I kind of thought, well, just remember remembering back from my EF days, you know what I mean?
- 41:53SPEAKER_01: Like, and that's why I was like thinking about it.
- 41:55SPEAKER_01: Um, but like even like when you like it, it made me think about too when you said like the the baseball mom drama, and I was like, oh yeah, you're right.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Sometimes I mean hearing that they followed through on certain action steps is also really cool, but like something about like those two examples that you mentioned there, it's like because there's um that again, that mental emotional process, like they they have they made sort of more of an internal choice as opposed to an external choice of like following through with like because there's behavior behind behavioral choices are also very difficult and challenging too.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: But something about moving the needle internally, yeah.
- 42:28SPEAKER_01: Um, I think is also like so much more complex.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: So um that I I agree, I think those are really big wins, and it's so hard to quantify it.
- 42:38SPEAKER_01: Um, but it does, I agree, feel so cool and so awesome to witness.
- 42:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 42:44SPEAKER_00: So I I do I do, I really love the work.
- 42:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: Oh my goodness.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: Well, listen, as we're getting ready to wrap up here, it's been so wonderful to chat with you, to nerd out on all these fun things, but where can people find you to get started?
- 43:00SPEAKER_01: Whether that's, you know, if they have some questions, um, what's what's that process look like?
- 43:04SPEAKER_00: And where so I'm on social media.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: My Instagram is um Beautiful Mess with Teddy, because I just felt like it made it a little more personal there and I have my name in it.
- 43:18SPEAKER_00: So I'm Beautiful Mess with Teddy.
- 43:19SPEAKER_00: Um, I do have a website which is beautiful messliving.com.
- 43:24SPEAKER_00: And you can people can DM me.
- 43:28SPEAKER_00: They can on my website you can book a free call.
- 43:31SPEAKER_00: Um, and that's usually what I have people do is we have an initial free like 30-ish minute chit chat, uh coffee chat, if you will, to like see where they are, what they need, and then we go from there.
- 43:46SPEAKER_00: So if anyone, you know, I'm on Facebook as well, just like reach out to me in any way you can get a hold of me and I'll direct you to the way to like book that call.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: Um, and then we go from there.
