- 0:11Hello friends, it's Shawn here and it is Monday.
- 0:16It is the 6th of April, but more importantly than that, it is
- 0:21Easter Monday. Christ has risen.
- 0:24He is risen indeed. Hallelujah.
- 0:28This is the Easter Sunday reading.
- 0:31I hope you are doing well. I hope you have had a fantastic
- 0:34Easter weekend celebration, celebrating in whatever way is
- 0:37your tradition, but most importantly getting to celebrate
- 0:41with your community as we remember the incredible victory
- 0:44that Jesus has won for us. And you're going to have to
- 0:47excuse my voice, it is a little bit croaky because I have
- 0:50preached 3 very loud and enthusiastic sermons today.
- 0:54Just so excited about sharing the good news of Jesus
- 0:58resurrection. And now that we have done that,
- 1:00we are going to read Mark's Gospel account which is the last
- 1:05chapter of the gospel of Mark. And then we are going to dive
- 1:08into a whole new book of Joshua this week, but that is from
- 1:13tomorrow. Today we read this beautiful
- 1:15gospel account which is actually broken into 3 sections.
- 1:18The first is the original manuscript.
- 1:20Just this very brief 8 verses, then with the shorter ending and
- 1:25then with a longer ending which was added to the later
- 1:29manuscripts of Mark. I'm going to read it all and
- 1:31I'll let you know what we're up to as we're going so that you
- 1:34can kind of be tracking that. But how about let's dive into it
- 1:37and read the wonderful news of our Lord and Saviour risen from
- 1:42the dead this Easter day as captured in Mark chapter 16.
- 1:58Saturday evening when the Sabbath ended, Mary Magdalene,
- 2:02Mary the mother of James and Salome went out and purchased
- 2:06burial spices so they could anoint Jesus body.
- 2:10Very early on Sunday morning, just at sunrise, they went to
- 2:14the tomb. On the way they were asking each
- 2:17other who will roll away the stone for us from the entrance
- 2:21to the tomb. But as they arrived, they looked
- 2:24up and saw that the stone, which was very large, had already been
- 2:29rolled aside. When they entered the tomb, they
- 2:32saw a young man clothed in a white robe sitting on the right
- 2:36side. The women were shocked, but the
- 2:39Angel said, don't be alarmed. You are looking for Jesus of
- 2:44Nazareth, who was crucified. He isn't here.
- 2:47He is risen from the dead. Look, this is where they laid
- 2:51his body. Now go and tell his disciples,
- 2:55including Peter, that Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee.
- 2:59You will see him there just as he told you before he died.
- 3:04The women fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, and
- 3:08they said nothing to anyone because they were too
- 3:11frightened. And this is where most ancient
- 3:16manuscripts of Mark conclude. Here is the shorter ending of
- 3:20Mark, which follows. Then they briefly reported all
- 3:25of this to Peter and his companions.
- 3:27Afterward, Jesus himself sent them out from east to West with
- 3:32the sacred and unfailing message of salvation that gives eternal
- 3:37life. Amen.
- 3:40And here is the longer ending of Mark, as found in later
- 3:43manuscripts. After Jesus rose from the dead
- 3:48early on Sunday morning, the first person who saw him was
- 3:52Mary Magdalene, the woman from whom he cast out seven demons.
- 3:57She went to the disciples who were grieving and weeping and
- 4:00told them what had happened. But when she told them that
- 4:03Jesus was alive and that she had seen him, they didn't believe
- 4:07her. Afterward, he appeared in a
- 4:10different form to two of his followers who were walking from
- 4:13Jerusalem into the country. They rushed back to tell the
- 4:16others, but no one believed them.
- 4:19Still later he appeared to the 11 disciples as they were eating
- 4:23together. He rebuked them for their
- 4:25stubborn unbelief because they refused to believe those who had
- 4:29seen him after he had been raised from the dead.
- 4:33And then he told them, go into all the world and preach the
- 4:37good news to everyone. Anyone who believes and is
- 4:41baptised will be saved, but anyone who refuses to believe
- 4:46will be condemned. These miraculous signs will
- 4:49accompany those who believe. They will cast out demons in My
- 4:53name and they will speak in new languages.
- 4:57They will be able to handle snakes with safety and if they
- 5:00drink anything poisonous, it won't hurt them.
- 5:04They will be able to place their hands on the sick and they will
- 5:07be healed. When the Lord Jesus had finished
- 5:10talking with them, He was taken up into heaven and sat down in
- 5:15the place of honour at God's right hand.
- 5:18And the disciples went everywhere and preached, and the
- 5:21Lord worked through them, confirming what he had said by
- 5:25many miraculous signs. Ah, Jesus, you have indeed
- 5:39risen. You are indeed the risen Lord of
- 5:44the world and the Lord of our hearts, and you send us out now,
- 5:50your followers, to let people know this incredible good news.
- 5:55Our Holy Spirit embolden us to speak clearly about the faith we
- 6:01have and everything that Jesus has done for us so that others
- 6:06can hear this incredible news too.
- 6:10But most importantly, we just thank you for giving up
- 6:15everything and overcoming death because you love us.
- 6:20And this is this beautiful free gift that you give us.
- 6:24And all we need do is believe it.
- 6:28And so we declare to you now, Lord Jesus, that we do believe
- 6:32it and we are in awe of all that you have achieved.
- 6:37How wonderful, conquering and risen Saviour.
- 6:42And we pray this all in your name, Jesus, Amen.
