- 0:53Joe: The Ghostbusters are back, and somehow this time there's even more slime.
- 0:58Dylan: It's Ghostbusters 2.
- 1:01Joe: Yes.
- 1:02Joe: If you're enjoying the show, make sure to follow us on your favorite podcast app and leave us a five-star rating.

- 1:09Dylan: And we want to hear from you.
- 1:10Dylan: Text us your name and a movie suggestion using the link in the description.
- 1:14Joe: Ghostbusters 2 is rated PG for supernatural action, some scary imagery, and mild language.
- 1:22Joe: If that's not suitable for little ears, we hope you'll tune in next week.
- 1:28Joe: And baby stealing.
- 1:29Joe: Yeah, and baby stealing.
- 1:32Joe: By a weird guy dressed up as a nanny ghost.
- 1:35Dylan: Was that a guy?
- 1:36Dylan: Yeah.
- 1:36Dylan: Just thought that was a really ugly woman.
- 1:38Joe: Yeah, that was Janos.
- 1:40Dylan: Oh.
- 1:44Dylan: It was the 80s.
- 1:47Dylan: Well, before we jump into the movie, let's talk about how we watched it.
- 1:51Joe: We we watched the five-disc 4K stillbook 35th anniversary edition 240-1 aspect ratio.
- 2:05Dylan: I think there's more words you could add into there.
- 2:07Joe: Dogs and cats lying together.
- 2:09Joe: Oh, that was the first one.
- 2:13Joe: And we listened to a Adobe Atmos uh soundtrack that was very front-heavy, but it was good.
- 2:21Dylan: Yeah.
- 2:22Dylan: There were times to where it definitely like really showed this the surround though.
- 2:27Dylan: Yeah.
- 2:29Dylan: Right.
- 2:29Dylan: Yeah.
- 2:30Dylan: Creepy voices and the scolari brothers going over like we didn't even have the surround sound on.
- 2:36Dylan: Yeah.
- 2:36Dylan: This was in stereo.
- 2:39Dylan: Your house is just haunted.
- 2:40Dylan: Yeah.
- 2:41Dylan: Right.
- 2:44Dylan: Alright.
- 2:45Dylan: So let's talk about Ghostbusters 2.
- 2:48Dylan: Alright.
- 2:49Dylan: So released in 1989.
- 2:53Dylan: Who is the director?
- 2:54Joe: Ivan Reitman.
- 2:55Dylan: Is it the same director as the first one?
- 2:57Joe: I believe so.
- 3:00Dylan: And then this one was also written by Dan Aykroyd.
- 3:04Joe: And Harold Ramis.
- 3:05Joe: Yeah.
- 3:06Joe: I think Ivan Reitman wrote some, but they got the credit.
- 3:13Dylan: So we were kind of talking about this before we actually watched the movie.
- 3:17Dylan: So there's the first movie and then a TV cartoon show.
- 3:26Joe: Yeah.
- 3:27Dylan: And then the second movie.
- 3:30Dylan: So how does the like cartoon play into all of that then?
- 3:35Joe: Oh well.
- 3:36Joe: I'll go into more detail later, but basically the popularity of the cartoon or the first movie.
- 3:50Joe: People kind of came to them with the idea of let's do a cartoon.
- 3:53Joe: And then Dan Ackard kind of was there and got involved.
- 3:56Joe: Yeah.
- 3:57Joe: Since he it was his story.
- 4:00Joe: And then you know, that blew up so much that it influenced this sequel.
- 4:09Joe: Yeah.
- 4:10Joe: Like it had a whole life of its own that yeah, changed it.
- 4:14Dylan: So yeah.
- 4:14Joe: Yeah.
- 4:15Dylan: And do you have that on your Plex?
- 4:17Dylan: I do.
- 4:17Dylan: Okay.
- 4:18Joe: If anybody wants the password, just one nine three four eight nine.
- 4:22Joe: No, she's kidding.
- 4:24Joe: Dash three four.
- 4:28Joe: Question mark, exclamation.
- 4:30Joe: Right.
- 4:30Dylan: Always have to have the special characters in there.
- 4:33Dylan: Uppercase, lowercase.
- 4:37Dylan: Minimum of 18 characters.
- 4:39Dylan: Yeah.
- 4:40Dylan: Nobody can remember.
- 4:41Dylan: Right.
- 4:43Joe: So after watching the first Ghostbusters, what did you actually want from the sequel?
- 4:50Dylan: Ooh, I don't even know.
- 4:55Dylan: Like the first Ghostbusters was such like a full, like well-rounded.
- 5:00Dylan: Uh-huh.
- 5:01Dylan: It definitely would be like hard to keep a continuation from that.
- 5:08Joe: Yeah.
- 5:08Dylan: Yeah.
- 5:09Dylan: So I don't even know what you could ask for, really.
- 5:11unknown: Yeah.
- 5:12Dylan: Do you have anything that got come to mind?
- 5:15Dylan: Well, I mean from watching, you know, the first one and all the cartoon and the second one.
- 5:20Dylan: Yeah.
- 5:20Joe: Yeah.
- 5:21Joe: Yeah.
- 5:21Joe: I mean, I grew up watching the cartoon, so it just kind of was always there.
- 5:26Joe: Yeah, me and my brother.
- 5:28Joe: And uh, but I look at different sequels, and and the one that really I think sequel of all sequels is the Back to Future trilogy.
- 5:36Joe: Yeah.
- 5:37Joe: Um, where they use kind of the same beats for each movie, um, and and kind of go with that.
- 5:48Joe: And I felt like there was a little bit of that here in in yeah, some kind of throwbacks to the previous movie.
- 5:56Joe: Yeah.
- 5:57Joe: So Slimer.
- 5:59Joe: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 6:00Joe: Oh yeah.
- 6:01Joe: Oh yeah.
- 6:04Dylan: Alright, so if you haven't seen this one, here's the quick setup.
- 6:08Dylan: Five years after saving New York, the Ghostbusters have fallen out of favor, been sued by the city, and gone their separate ways.
- 6:15Dylan: But when Dana Barrett's baby carriage suddenly takes off through the streets of Manhattan, the team discovers a massive river of supernatural slime flowing beneath the city, feeding on the anger and negativity of everyone above it.
- 6:28Dylan: Meanwhile, an ancient tyrect named Vigo the Carpathian is looking for a way out of his portrait and back into the world.
- 6:36Dylan: So naturally, New York needs the Ghostbusters again.
- 6:43Dylan: So what was your first time watching Ghostbusters 2 like?
- 6:48Joe: Man, that's a hard one.
- 6:50Joe: I can't remember.
- 6:51Dylan: Yeah.
- 6:51Dylan: Yeah.
- 6:52Dylan: It's definitely it definitely struck me as one of those ones that you could just throw on anytime and just have played in the background.
- 7:00Joe: It definitely is.
- 7:01Joe: And you know, it's one of those ones that's on cable all the time and yeah, shown.
- 7:07Joe: And um, you know, thinking back on it and watching it now, it's actually a heck of a lot more better than I remember it.
- 7:18Joe: Yeah.
- 7:20Joe: Yeah.
- 7:21Joe: Because I think it's one of the the ones that gets the kind of the you know the sequel curse kind of thing.
- 7:29Joe: People don't like it as much as the first one or whatever.
- 7:32Joe: But I yeah, I'm like, whoa, why haven't I been watching this like every year?
- 7:36Joe: Yeah.
- 7:39Dylan: I definitely understand like the whole thing, like you know, of the sequel curse though, because the first one just has such a you know big shadow, yeah, it would just be hard to follow it up.
- 7:52Joe: Yeah.
- 7:53Dylan: And I I kind of felt like the story of this one kind of fell a little flat.
- 7:59Dylan: Um it just was not, I didn't feel like it was as creative as the first one.
- 8:06Dylan: And so, um, you know, kind of comparing it to that then, yeah.
- 8:14Dylan: Um, you know, kind of how they instead of you know just starting off the Ghostbusters, they were like, oh well, nobody likes us now, now we have to revamp it.
- 8:26Dylan: Yeah.
- 8:26Dylan: And like stuff like that just kind of followed in the tracks of the first one.
- 8:32Dylan: And I was like, haven't we seen this before?
- 8:35Joe: Like trying to, you know, gain slash regain the popularity and yeah, like it's too on the nose of following the previous yeah, yeah.
- 8:46Joe: I feel like with like Back to the Future, which is you know, a huge um or a hard movie to follow, you know, uh as far as if you're gonna be a successful movie and this is the formula for doing sequels, like it's really hard to get that down creatively, yeah.
- 9:07Joe: And like with Back to the Future, you know, in the in the second one, they go to Future, and then all of a sudden Marty's on a skateboard again and it's a hoverboard, and then he's getting chased by Biff, and then the third one, it's you know, and so um they do the beats without making it too obvious, yeah, you know, and yeah, well, and like with Back to the Future, like we you know, when they kind of redid the same beats, I felt like it was more of like fan service than trying to follow the oh well this worked the first time, so oh right, yeah, you know, true.
- 9:47Dylan: Whereas like with Back to the Future, it you know was fun to see them, you know, chasing him around and you're you know being chased by Biff, uh-huh, you know, or Griff or Right, exactly.
- 10:01Dylan: All the ifs.
- 10:02Joe: Yeah, all the tannins.
- 10:06Joe: Yeah.
- 10:07Joe: So I yeah, it yeah, that's a hard one to to really do.
- 10:14Dylan: Yeah.
- 10:15Joe: I did like um what I did like with their chemistry though is that they did feel like they were still, you know, friends over the five years and still hung out, and like, you know, Winston and and um Ray are going out to birthday parties together just to make a little side catch.
- 10:37Joe: You know, Ray has his his little bookstore and that's his thing, and they all have their own, you know, Peter has a TV show, right?
- 10:45Joe: You know, so I feel like in that respect, like they yeah, I don't know that they next well, I guess it was a good thing in some ways that that whole five years later, you know, pops up.
- 10:58Joe: And uh it really ties in if you're watching the first one and this then the second one.
- 11:03Dylan: Right, you know, that way you're not expecting it to be like, you know, moments later.
- 11:08Joe: Yeah, right, right.
- 11:10Joe: After.
- 11:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:12SPEAKER_02: Just after they got the city cleaned up from toasted marshmallows.
- 11:16Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:18Joe: Yeah, and there's a similar character to the guy who was from the EPA and you know, tries to get them arrested, and then now it's the mayor's assistant.
- 11:28Dylan: Right.
- 11:28Dylan: You know, yeah.
- 11:31Dylan: I got some friends to talk to downtown.
- 11:34Joe: If you don't mind.
- 11:35Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 11:36Joe: Do you guys mind talking to my friends downtown?
- 11:39Joe: Yes, it needs to be right away.
- 11:43Dylan: Yes, yes, it does.
- 11:46Dylan: So is there is there anything that Ghostbusters 2 does better than the original that you think?
- 11:53Joe: I think it does.
- 11:55Joe: Uh and having seen the cartoon, like I feel like it leans more on that and the family aspect, and it's not as adult-oriented and humor.
- 12:09Joe: Um and really when I was a kid, it was the music that really, and especially like the Bobby Brown song, which we'll talk about more later, but that really to me was the campaigning and the the you know of like getting into the culture again, you know.
- 12:28Joe: The zeitgeist, you know, and and really impacting because you you couldn't go anywhere without hearing that song, right?
- 12:38Joe: Yeah.
- 12:38Joe: So uh, and then it's that song is goes out, goes throughout the film and stuff, and so yeah, yeah.
- 12:47Joe: I feel like it's a fun one.
- 12:49Dylan: Yeah.
- 12:51Dylan: So let's see where everybody is five years later.
- 12:55Dylan: So of course we have our main main man, Peter Venckman, played by Bill Murray.
- 13:04Dylan: So I really liked in this one though how he was uh hosting the world of the psychic.
- 13:13Dylan: Exactly.
- 13:14Joe: Yeah.
- 13:15Joe: It's kind of the you know repeat of the being in the the uh laboratory and testing right and this time he's like testing people in front of cameras and yeah.
- 13:30Joe: And his his comments, man, are you know, so the alien had a hotel room in the Hyatt?
- 13:38Joe: Right.
- 13:40Dylan: Oh, or their spaceship was just made to look like a hotel room.
- 13:44Dylan: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:48Dylan: I liked the kind of relationship with Dana where you know they didn't show the whole, you know, dating and falling out of.
- 14:02Dylan: Yeah.
- 14:03Dylan: You know, and I don't know if they cover that in the cartoon at all.
- 14:07Joe: Right.
- 14:07Dylan: But, you know, how they don't necessarily show all that, but they kind of show the reunion of that.
- 14:15Dylan: Yeah.
- 14:15Dylan: Like I thought that was a good way to to tell that story without dragging it down.
- 14:20Joe: Yeah.
- 14:21Joe: You know, um, yeah, I mean, originally, I think in the original script, they were going to have been together for the five years, and that was gonna be their kid.
- 14:33Joe: Yeah.
- 14:34Joe: And they decided to change it, and so they they threw in their story in between all the little conversations and everything with her talking to Egon, which is hilarious when um she's like, Does he ever ask about me?
- 14:50Joe: And he lies to her and says no, just to to test her with that, right?
- 14:55Joe: Yeah, he's like, No, you know, you know, uh, and so yeah, they they kind of had to find a way to fill in the story, and as their conversations went, it was like, well, you know, why didn't why didn't you ever marry me?
- 15:16Joe: You never asked.
- 15:18Joe: Right.
- 15:20Joe: Oh yeah, there's that, and it's so typical.
- 15:24Joe: Like, I mean, the writers knew the characters well enough because that sounds like a Peter thing to be like, whenever I brought it up, you would pretend to fall asleep.
- 15:34Joe: Right.
- 15:36Dylan: You avoided the subject, yeah.
- 15:38Dylan: Exactly.
- 15:41Dylan: Yeah.
- 15:42Dylan: So next you have Ray played by Dan Aykroyd.
- 15:48Dylan: Yeah.
- 15:49Dylan: I love I know I said it in the first one, probably, but I just love his dry sense of humor.
- 15:56Dylan: Oh, I know.
- 15:57Joe: I know.
- 15:58Joe: I I love Dan Aykroyd.
- 16:00Joe: It's why I love the Blues Brothers too.
- 16:03Joe: Yeah.
- 16:05Joe: Yeah.
- 16:06Joe: And you know, he was uh he studied parapsychology and all that stuff, so this is really his his way of getting all that studying out, yeah.
- 16:17Joe: And a lot of the stuff he talks about in the movie is really his own dialogue just coming out of what he knows and what he studied, right?
- 16:29Joe: And the rays of cult books.
- 16:33Joe: Yeah.
- 16:35Dylan: Yeah, the whole store is just hilarious.
- 16:37Dylan: Yeah.
- 16:40Joe: Um yeah, and then becoming a children's party performer that that's totally in his character to be that, you know.
- 16:50Dylan: And then, of course, you have the king of the dry humor.
- 16:56Dylan: Egon Spangler.
- 16:57Dylan: Oh, yeah.
- 16:58Dylan: Played by Harold Ramis.
- 17:01Dylan: Man, nothing changed about that character.
- 17:04Joe: Right.
- 17:05Joe: Yeah.
- 17:05Dylan: And that's why we love him.
- 17:07Dylan: Yeah, yeah.
- 17:09Joe: Yeah, the funny spin we'll talk about more is that it in the first one, him and Janine seem to be striking up a relationship.
- 17:18Joe: Yeah.
- 17:19Joe: And it didn't go anywhere.
- 17:20Joe: Yeah.
- 17:22Joe: And he, you know, he has all his like the cool thing is, you know, you find him in the laboratory, and he's he's he has this couple that he, you know, he's testing out and raising the heat in the in the room and everything.
- 17:38Joe: Right.
- 17:38Joe: And you can see even the doctor comes in and he looks like he's already hot from walking in there.
- 17:44Joe: Yeah.
- 17:44Joe: And this pressure chamber of heat and emotion.
- 17:49Dylan: Yeah, emotion.
- 17:51Joe: And then you have the the um the little girl with the puppy and at the end.
- 17:58Joe: He's like, let's see what happens when we take the puppy away from her.
- 18:02Joe: Yeah.
- 18:04Joe: So cruel.
- 18:07Joe: Okay, I guess next is Winston said more, played by Ernie Hudson.
- 18:13Dylan: Was he in this one less than the first one?
- 18:16Joe: I don't think so.
- 18:16Joe: I think he was in it maybe as much.
- 18:20Dylan: Yeah.
- 18:21Joe: Because Winston in the first one didn't come until like the third act, right?
- 18:26Joe: Like, so oh, that's true.
- 18:29Joe: They show his like they show their success, and then all of a sudden they need to employ new people.
- 18:35Joe: Right.
- 18:35Joe: And so then Janine gets hired, and then he gets hired later.
- 18:39Joe: Gotcha.
- 18:40Joe: So I think like he just wasn't in it as much.
- 18:43Joe: And there was trade-off of characters too, where the first you know, three that got arrested were the main guys.
- 18:55Joe: And then uh, you know, he kind of joins in later, but he's he's there like second scene because he's at the birthday party.
- 19:05Dylan: Yeah.
- 19:06Joe: And then kind of goes away and then comes back.
- 19:09Dylan: So it's just kind of yeah, kind of interesting how he was so like in and out.
- 19:14Dylan: Because there were parts where it was like, well, you're missing somebody.
- 19:20Joe: Yeah, right.
- 19:22Joe: Don't you remember Winston?
- 19:24Joe: Right, right.
- 19:25Joe: Yeah.
- 19:26Dylan: Somebody had to guard the car.
- 19:27Joe: Yeah, right.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: They were double parked.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Um but the way they drive, I don't think they would have cared.
- 19:34Joe: Oh, yeah, no, yeah, no, no.
- 19:37Joe: Yeah, I I could have used more Winston.
- 19:40Joe: So let's uh try to campaign for the Winston cut of part two.
- 19:48Dylan: Next we have Dana Barrett, played by Sigourney Weaver.
- 19:54Dylan: Yep.
- 19:55Joe: She's a mother.
- 19:56Joe: She is.
- 19:58Joe: And not of an alien.
- 20:01Joe: No, wrong movie.
- 20:02Joe: Oops, oops, oops.
- 20:07Dylan: But yeah, her.
- 20:10Dylan: I liked her story arc in this one better.
- 20:14Joe: Yeah.
- 20:15Joe: Yeah.
- 20:17Dylan: Um, like what aspects like how in the first one, like she was, you know, the victim.
- 20:29Dylan: And pretty much was the victim throughout the whole thing.
- 20:33Dylan: Versus I felt like this one she was kind of more prepared, yeah.
- 20:39Dylan: More cunning.
- 20:40Dylan: You know, kind of later on when she goes to recover her child and kind of has to, you know, play it up then.
- 20:51Dylan: Yeah.
- 20:51Dylan: I I thought that was good.
- 20:53Joe: Yeah.
- 20:53Joe: Yeah, that definitely worked in her favor of playing up the oh, okay.
- 20:59Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:01Joe: Yeah.
- 21:02Dylan: She's a smart one.
- 21:04Dylan: Right.
- 21:06Dylan: So, of course, you have Lewis Tully.
- 21:11Dylan: Yep.
- 21:12Dylan: Played by Rick Moranis.
- 21:14Dylan: Uh-huh.
- 21:15Dylan: Now the accountant.
- 21:16Dylan: Yeah.
- 21:17Joe: And lawyer.
- 21:18Joe: Right.
- 21:21Dylan: And uh Fifth Ghostbuster really comes in and saves the day at the end.
- 21:26Joe: He does.
- 21:26Joe: He does.
- 21:27Joe: Takes down the slime single-handedly.
- 21:29Joe: Single-handedly.
- 21:30Dylan: Very impressive.
- 21:30Joe: At least according to everybody else.
- 21:32Dylan: Right.
- 21:33Dylan: Eyewitnesses say.
- 21:34Dylan: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 21:36Joe: Louis Toli single-handedly saved the Ghostbusters.
- 21:43Joe: Yeah, there's a lot more.
- 21:45Joe: Uh I guess there was more cut in the um original script to where he had more of the building up of his character like to become a Ghostbuster.
- 21:56Joe: It wasn't just like overnight.
- 21:58Joe: Yeah.
- 21:58Joe: Like this made it seem like a lot of things.
- 22:01Dylan: Very spur of the moment.
- 22:02Joe: Yeah, like you know, him and Janine are messing around in the in the firehouse, and all of a sudden he puts on the coat, you know, or the you know, jumpsuit.
- 22:13Dylan: So speaking of Janine, so Janine Balentz was played by Annie Potts.
- 22:24Joe: Uh-huh.
- 22:24Joe: Melnitz.
- 22:25Dylan: Melnitz, is that how?
- 22:27Joe: Yeah.
- 22:29Dylan: Um I thought it was so funny how like she wasn't their assistant anymore in this one.
- 22:36Joe: Yeah.
- 22:37Dylan: But she was still around.
- 22:39Joe: Yeah.
- 22:39Joe: She was still friends.
- 22:40Joe: Right?
- 22:41Joe: They had gone through a lot together, so they were still in touch.
- 22:44Joe: Trauma bonded.
- 22:45Joe: Yeah.
- 22:46Joe: Yeah.
- 22:48Joe: Um yeah.
- 22:49Joe: The thing with her character too is that, you know, um with the cartoon happening, they they made her more like the cartoon in this one than she was in the original.
- 23:04Joe: Oh, really?
- 23:04Joe: The original, she looks like a librarian.
- 23:06Joe: Right.
- 23:09Joe: And then uh the new one, I mean she's or Ghost Plus 62, she's more fashionable, conscious conscious.
- 23:16Dylan: She's came into her own.
- 23:18Dylan: Yes, yes.
- 23:19Joe: Totally, completely different.
- 23:21Dylan: Yeah.
- 23:23Dylan: Yeah.
- 23:24Dylan: The uh the little love scene between uh her and Lewis, though, was hilarious.
- 23:33Joe: Yeah.
- 23:34Dylan: And when Dana comes in, it's like, what about the baby?
- 23:36Dylan: They're like, oh, and there's a baby.
- 23:38Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 23:39Joe: Oops.
- 23:40Dylan: Oh, yeah, fine, fine.
- 23:42Joe: Typical babysitter humor.
- 23:44Joe: Right.
- 23:47Joe: So then there's Dr.
- 23:49Joe: Janos Poha, played by Peter McNichol.
- 23:53Joe: Peter McNichol revealed that um in the first script that he saw, the character of Janos was a more lackluster villain called Jason.
- 24:05Joe: And Jason.
- 24:06Joe: Yeah, which they probably would have pronounced Husson or something.
- 24:11Joe: So he's he uh suggested making the art restorer come from Carpathia, which is why he's an expert on the painting of Vigo.
- 24:21Joe: Yeah.
- 24:21Joe: Uh during the filming, he spent uh a lot of time in his trailer creating the Yanos origin and accent, the mythology of Carpathia.
- 24:34Joe: Okay, and he cape came up with his own vision for a Carpathian flag, which featured a snake stepping on a man.
- 24:47Joe: Yeah.
- 24:48Dylan: His character was was funny though.
- 24:50Dylan: The how he like relentlessly would pursue Dana.
- 24:55Joe: Yeah.
- 24:56Dylan: And then even when he got possessed, still dude.
- 25:00Dylan: Still tried, yeah.
- 25:01Joe: I like how like instead of you know admitting his defeat, he's like, okay, I'll give you a rain check.
- 25:07Joe: Right.
- 25:07Dylan: I will I will supply you with a rain check.
- 25:10Dylan: Yeah.
- 25:11Dylan: You're like, oh, how generous of you.
- 25:16Dylan: Yeah.
- 25:17Dylan: It's only the you know, so thousandth time that that's happened.
- 25:21Dylan: Yeah.
- 25:23Dylan: Right.
- 25:26Dylan: Um So then you also have Vigo, the Carpathian.
- 25:31Dylan: Man, that painting was creepy.
- 25:34Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 25:35Joe: Yeah.
- 25:36Joe: I loved how uh Peter made fun of it though.
- 25:39Joe: Yeah.
- 25:40Joe: Stood in front of it.
- 25:40Joe: He's like, um, yeah, played by Wilhelm von Humburg.
- 25:50Joe: Um yeah, the painting's pretty creepy.
- 25:54Joe: Uh so Vigo is played by Wilhelm von Humburg.
- 25:59Joe: And uh do you do you know where you've seen him in a movie that we've covered already?
- 26:06SPEAKER_02: Was it the first Ghostbusters?
- 26:09Joe: He was in the background the whole time.
- 26:11Joe: The whole time.
- 26:13Joe: Mind blown.
- 26:15Joe: You heard it here first, folks.
- 26:19Dylan: No, I could not tell you.
- 26:22Joe: He was a henchman in Die Hard.
- 26:28Joe: One of the many German henchmen.
- 26:30Dylan: Okay.
- 26:32Joe: He had he had a little bit of a role, you know, in Die Hard, but you know, he was one of them.
- 26:38Dylan: Yeah.
- 26:38Dylan: Yeah.
- 26:39Joe: So I think he was like the first brother that died, and the brother was avenging him or something like that.
- 26:46Joe: Oh, okay.
- 26:47Joe: That actor.
- 26:48Joe: So um, and then because of his thick accent, the actual voice of Vigo is Max Von Side Sido, and he was he played the priest and the exorcist.
- 27:03Joe: Uh, I remember him from being Ming the Merciless in the Flash movie.
- 27:08Joe: Okay.
- 27:08Joe: I and he was in some one of the Star Wars.
- 27:12Joe: Um, but they brought him in to overdub the dialogue, yeah.
- 27:19Joe: They're like, can anybody understand?
- 27:23Dylan: He's gonna say that or subtitles.
- 27:25Dylan: Yeah, right.
- 27:26Joe: Yeah, he's speaking a different language, right?
- 27:29Joe: Supposed to be English.
- 27:32Joe: So a couple different uh cameos.
- 27:35Joe: Uh so when Dana is running after the um the carts and everything, and then you see the Ecto one and it shows up like it's there to save Dana, and then they end up in a birthday party.
- 27:48Joe: Yeah.
- 27:49Joe: Um, Jason Reitman is Ivan Reitman's son, and he's the kid who tells them, you know, my dad thinks you're whatever, you know.
- 28:00Joe: Um so then he ends up directing the most recent recent sequels.
- 28:06Joe: Oh yeah.
- 28:07Joe: Yeah.
- 28:07Joe: So the newest uh was it Aftermath and Frozen Frozen or something?
- 28:15Dylan: Something can't wait to get corrected on that.
- 28:17Joe: Yeah.
- 28:18Joe: We'll know what it's called when we cover the movies.
- 28:22Joe: Uh so yeah, he he worked on those two, and I think he's gonna be producing the next one that's coming out.
- 28:29Joe: Okay, yeah.
- 28:30Joe: So I I asked you if you recognize a psychiatrist in the mental hospital.
- 28:38Joe: And you didn't.
- 28:40Joe: You could not place him.
- 28:41Joe: Are you surprised by that though?
- 28:42Joe: No, I'm not.
- 28:43Joe: Not at all.
- 28:44Joe: That's why I asked.
- 28:46Joe: Because I'm like, ooh.
- 28:48Joe: So that was he was played by Brian Doyle Murray, who played the mayor in Groundhog Day, and is also Bill Murray's brother.
- 28:57Dylan: I love that he has just has a cameo in all of Bill Murray's movies.
- 29:01Dylan: Exactly.
- 29:02Dylan: Yeah, yeah.
- 29:02Joe: It's like, hey, what are you doing today?
- 29:04Joe: Nothing.
- 29:04Joe: You want to come play a psychiatrist in the mental ward?
- 29:07Joe: Right.
- 29:07Joe: Sure.
- 29:09Dylan: I'd love to do that.
- 29:11Dylan: Um it's so funny too, because you can definitely like see the resemblance between the two of them.
- 29:17Dylan: But unless they were like side by side, yeah, you wouldn't put it together.
- 29:21Joe: Yeah.
- 29:23Joe: I love how he's like, you know, do you do you agree with these guys or whatever?
- 29:28Joe: He's like, I don't, I don't know what I don't even know these guys.
- 29:31Joe: Like uh, and then another like quick cameo, uh miss it if you blink kind of thing, is Ben Stein, the teacher from Ferris Bueller.
- 29:44Joe: Um, you know, Bueller.
- 29:47Joe: He played a public works official in the mayor's office.
- 29:51Joe: Oh, nice.
- 29:52Joe: So, like, you know, if they're all talking and everything, and he hands them some folder or whatever.
- 29:58Joe: Yeah.
- 29:58Joe: So I was like, cool.
- 30:01Dylan: Do you think Vigo is actually scarier than Gozer?
- 30:06Joe: Hmm.
- 30:09Joe: You know what I noticed is although they're super powerful, they didn't exactly kill off the Ghostbusters when they hit them with their, you know, uh laser beams or whatever.
- 30:23Joe: Right.
- 30:23Joe: You know, like both times, uh, you know, Gozer hits them and they just kind of get pushed almost off the building, and then you know, the other, you know, with uh Vigo, he kind of does that too, and they don't they just kind of lay on the floor.
- 30:38Dylan: But the with this one though, they did say that um that they like couldn't move like they were being held in place.
- 30:49Dylan: Yeah.
- 30:50Dylan: Versus just getting pushed back.
- 30:51Joe: Yeah.
- 30:53Joe: And it was up to Lewis to save them.
- 30:59Dylan: So but like they both have such like different aspects to them though, because you know, with Gozer, you had the statues turned dogs.
- 31:12Dylan: Yeah.
- 31:13Dylan: And that was really cool because then you kind of had the scenes of them like getting stalked and stuff.
- 31:19Joe: Yeah.
- 31:19Dylan: Um, you know, versus this one you have the creepy haunted painting, the you know, possession and then glowing eyes.
- 31:29Joe: Yeah, like um Ray gets possessed by him.
- 31:35Joe: Yeah, it was a really funky makeup on on Ray.
- 31:41Joe: Yeah.
- 31:42Joe: I was like, what in the world?
- 31:45Dylan: Definitely more alien-esque on that one.
- 31:47Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 31:49Dylan: I did like how they kind of planted that earlier, though.
- 31:54Dylan: Yeah.
- 31:54Dylan: By the first time that Ray saw that painting and kind of look away.
- 31:58Joe: Uh-huh.
- 31:58Joe: Kind of the open mouth.
- 32:02Joe: Like, Ray, Ray.
- 32:03Joe: Yeah.
- 32:06Dylan: Um, the severed heads in the subway was also like very creepy.
- 32:11Joe: Yes, it was.
- 32:13Joe: I'll say this now, but that um scene was shot in a nightclub.
- 32:19Dylan: In a nightclub?
- 32:21Joe: In a nightclub.
- 32:22Joe: There's an apparently a nightclub in New York that has train tracks set up like that.
- 32:27Joe: Huh.
- 32:28Joe: And they set it up in there, and they just basically grabbed uh the makeup artist grabbed just a bunch of uh busts that he was working on or you were working on, and just put them all together into one scene.
- 32:42Joe: And so that's where the the heads came from.
- 32:45Joe: We're like, let's just throw them in here and you know, make it happen.
- 32:49Dylan: Use what you got, right?
- 32:50Dylan: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:53Dylan: And then the creepiest part of the whole movie, the Titanic shows up.
- 32:57Joe: Yes.
- 32:58Joe: Hey, better late than never.
- 33:01Dylan: That was so funny.
- 33:04Dylan: Could not get over that.
- 33:05Dylan: Yeah.
- 33:06Joe: Teach Marine was awesome.
- 33:10Joe: He's a great comedian.
- 33:12Dylan: And I love how I love how the Titanic just shows up.
- 33:15Joe: Yeah.
- 33:16Dylan: And the movie just moves right along.
- 33:17Dylan: Right.
- 33:18Dylan: Like it's like you think it would have stopped, and you're like, oh, they finally got here.
- 33:26Joe: Yeah.
- 33:28Joe: Yep.
- 33:32Joe: I guess the uh that line was originally gonna go to Egon and it was gonna be a different scenario or something.
- 33:39Dylan: Oh yeah.
- 33:40Joe: Yeah, I haven't watched the trailer, but apparently it's in one of the trailers.
- 33:43Joe: Oh, funny.
- 33:44Joe: Yeah.
- 33:44Dylan: So that you made the trailer and then was like, oh, we should change that.
- 33:50Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 33:55Dylan: All right, Joe.
- 33:57Dylan: Let's talk about the music.
- 33:59Joe: The music goes to 11.
- 34:02Joe: Goes to 11.
- 34:05Dylan: And that's Joe's rating.
- 34:06Dylan: Yeah, yeah.
- 34:09Joe: Um, yeah, it it's great.
- 34:11Joe: It's a different take on uh the original one because there's you know, it's 1989, there's a lot more hip-hop going on, yeah, and so they kind of adapt more into that.
- 34:21Joe: There's like a remix of of the original Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr.
- 34:26Joe: And then there's the original theme um to kind of kick it off.
- 34:31Joe: And then, like I said, Bobby Brown um on our own gets played throughout different parts, and you know, like I said, I I've always liked that song, and um it's hip man.
- 34:45Joe: Um uh the funny thing is that so Bobby Brown um he actually makes a cameo as a doorman and uh who asked for a proton pack for his brother.
- 34:58Joe: Oh yeah.
- 35:00Joe: Yeah.
- 35:06Joe: I don't know why it didn't make it on my notes, but um that I noticed right away is the do Reagan.
- 35:15Joe: Yeah, my wife actually said, that's actually do re soul and not do Ray Me.
- 35:25Joe: And then like now you can't unhear it because it's like, oh yeah, they do go up.
- 35:32Joe: Um so yeah, we talked about the original.
- 35:36Joe: So uh higher and higher is used to move the toaster, yeah.
- 35:45Joe: They put the uh slime in the toaster and they learn how to manipulate it so that uh you know it it could have a positive charge as opposed to a negative charge, yeah.
- 35:56Joe: Um, which is awesome because Jackie Wilson's an amazing artist.
- 36:02Joe: Um so I kind of pointed this out to you as we were watching the credits, but the there's a remix version of Higher and Higher at the end when Statue of Liberty is walking around, and that is performed by Howard Huntsberry, who was uh Jackie Wilson impersonator, but we had already covered covered La Bamba, and he played Jackie Wilson and La Bamba.
- 36:29Dylan: It all comes around, it all comes around.
- 36:32Dylan: Yes, yeah, because I noticed when the like, you know, when the second time they played that, uh huh, I was like, this is different.
- 36:38Joe: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 36:39Joe: You could totally tell.
- 36:40Joe: And and that's what made me think, like, huh, I wonder how they did that.
- 36:44Joe: Because Jackie Wilson had already passed by the time this movie was was out, and I was like, how did they get his voice to do that in the 80s?
- 36:52Joe: Well, you know, because now you can just do samples and pitch match and you know, get it all together.
- 36:59Joe: And back then it was like, well, let's just find somebody who sounds like him and sing over it again.
- 37:06Dylan: Which I thought was cool.
- 37:08Dylan: Yeah.
- 37:08Dylan: So let's talk about how this movie was made.
- 37:12Dylan: Because I know we kind of talked about it, you know, while watching the movie, but it just has so many like practical effects that just you know wouldn't be used nowadays.
- 37:24Joe: Yeah.
- 37:25Joe: So like the uh Ivan Reitman said that it was easier to get the sequel going because of the popularity of the first film, yeah, and then the popularity of the cartoon.
- 37:38Dylan: Bigger budgets.
- 37:39Joe: Yeah, and it was ingrained in the into the culture already, so they didn't have to like reinvent the wheel necessarily and do you know character origins, like all the remake comic book things were okay.
- 37:52Joe: We've already seen Batman's Parents Die Once, right?
- 37:57Joe: Zack Snyder.
- 37:58Joe: Anyway, uh I'm a fan.
- 38:03Joe: Um, anyway, so yeah, you know, they were able to kind of move along, but there were like the five-year gap between the original and the sequel also was that Bill Murray had taken an extended sabbatical from acting, and he he was angry with like the newer, you know, people in charge of Columbia, and so he did he didn't want to have anything to do with it.
- 38:31Joe: Oh yeah, yeah.
- 38:33Joe: Um, because he had said something about him making millions off of movies, but not actually being an artist when it comes came to acting, so he was like, I'm not gonna be a part of this.
- 38:46Joe: Um and so then like the another he got let go, the head guy, and then a new person came in, and they were active in trying to get all the characters back and all the actors back and kind of uh helping with relationships and and kind of getting them all back together, yeah, because they had a all had a falling out too.
- 39:11Joe: Um, and so uh Harold Ramis and and Dan Ackroyd kind of started writing all together.
- 39:20Joe: Uh, and there was like initially they were gonna take a darker approach to you know, kind of as dark as the first one, yeah, but darker than what we had.
- 39:32Joe: So um, and the hard part of when they released it was that Batman 89 had just come out too, so it didn't like exactly go the way they planned.
- 39:46Joe: Like it was it was up there, but it wasn't like they thought they were hoping it was gonna be number one.
- 39:51Joe: Chuck Topper.
- 39:52Joe: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:52Joe: Which you know, you released an album or a a movie, you want that, right?
- 39:57Joe: But you don't expect to get blindsided by Tim Burton's Batman, you know, which for the time was pretty, you know, cutting edge.
- 40:06Dylan: Yeah.
- 40:07Joe: Um so um they they took advantage of the comedians being writers, and so they had a script, but they were able to improv on that script because they would just say, you know, Ivan Reitman would just be like, Well, let's try it this way, or let's try it that way, and they could totally improv, you know, they they were all part of different comedy troops and SNL and all that stuff, and so they were able to think on their feet, and so they also got writing credit because they contributed to the script.
- 40:46Joe: Yeah, you know, their whole take on it was they wanted to give more to the character of New York, yeah.
- 40:52Joe: And so, like showing those tunnels where the the whole um the new pneumatic the pneumatic tubes, yeah.
- 41:00Joe: Yeah, that that's interesting when you think about pneumatic tubes, right?
- 41:05Joe: Because like we have we use that at the bank, yeah.
- 41:08Joe: And and so like to think about that in terms of how a train would be used, it's just can't wrap my mind around that.
- 41:16Joe: Yeah, so I guess there was like a real hostility in New York as well.
- 41:20Joe: So they they wanted to show that, but they wanted to show that there's more hope for New York than the way it was, because there's a lot of tension everywhere.
- 41:29Joe: Um so that wasn't faked.
- 41:34Joe: Um in the movie, uh so the slime is made from cornstarch and a gelatinous substance, so like you know, like you would make jello, but yes, that and this cornstarch put together that makes the slime.
- 41:53Joe: Uh and apparently it doesn't last very long.
- 41:57Joe: Oh yeah, and I don't I think it's like it sounded like it was more prone to drying out and stuff, but yeah, they had to continually keep making it making more of it, yeah.
- 42:07Joe: Dan Arkworth said a medical researcher in France was the first to discover ectoplasm.
- 42:13Joe: Yeah, in real life, it is actually more of an ash than a slime, but they thought slime would be a little more uh video friendly.
- 42:24Dylan: Yeah.
- 42:25Dylan: Like, oh, look at this ash.
- 42:27Dylan: Yeah, somebody's cigarette there.
- 42:29Joe: Yeah.
- 42:30Joe: They uh shot the the river scene in in two days' time because when they shot the first part, when they're coming out of the ground, you know.
- 42:42Joe: I mean, it was cold, it was winter, you know, and they're covered in the slime.
- 42:46Joe: Uh the camera didn't work.
- 42:48Joe: And so when they went back to look at the dailies, nothing they didn't get anything, so they had to come back the next day and do it all over again.
- 42:58Joe: Um and so, like I like we were talking about the real Ghostbusters came out after the success of the first movie.
- 43:07Joe: It introduced the Ghostbusters to a younger audience of over you know seven or eight.
- 43:15Joe: Uh and the cartoon brought the the younger audience into the movie.
- 43:22Dylan: Yeah.
- 43:23Joe: And so, you know, they had wanted to do action figures and stuff on the first movie, but because it was so adult oriented, they couldn't couldn't really justify it.
- 43:33Joe: Yeah.
- 43:34Joe: And so with this, you know, they were they had toys once the cartoon came out, then they had action figures.
- 43:40Joe: And so then when the second one came out, they were able to do even more merch because they had there was already a popularity there.
- 43:48Dylan: Yeah.
- 43:49Dylan: And so then um so did all of the uh action figures and imagery have uh the two on it then?
- 43:56Dylan: Yeah, it did.
- 43:58Joe: Most of it did.
- 44:00Joe: Um so in the years between Ghostbusters and you know and the film and then having the cartoon, uh the cartoon introduced the idea that Slimer was living in the firehouse as the Ghostbusters pet.
- 44:17Joe: Oh yeah, yeah, and he's really like a sidekick in there.
- 44:21Joe: He's he's it's kind of like he plays the role of like a Scooby-Doo type.
- 44:25Joe: Oh, and like that's the best way I can put it because he's kind of a pet, but he's kind of a sidekick, yeah, you know, and that and and so like he'll save them every once in a while or help them, you know, like uh and so that was really big, and I I think they could have embellished that more, but um so then yeah, so they they brought him in to the film, and you know, they brought him back because of his popularity.
- 44:55Joe: The scene where Lewis totally finds Slimer in the fire station apparently eating his lunch was originally intended to be a running gag in the film.
- 45:03Joe: Oh yeah, yeah, where Lewis would try and trap the ghost and try and prove himself as a Ghostbuster, and the idea was cut, and the scene and the sequence of the end where Lewis apparently removes the slime from outside the museum are the only remains of this joke.
- 45:21Dylan: Oh, really?
- 45:22Joe: Yeah, and so there is a scene where, like, you know, he sees him in the firehouse and kind of goes tries to go after him, and then when he gets to the bus, Slimer opens up the door, yeah.
- 45:33Joe: Oh, I didn't know if you had a license or and uh you know, again with the cartoon, the looks of not only I didn't feel like it was just Janine, but I felt like Egon, if you compare the cartoon and you compare the first movie and you compare Ghostbusters 2, his hair is a lot higher.
- 45:58Joe: And the cartoon really influenced the the look.
- 46:01Joe: Oh yeah.
- 46:03Dylan: So I just thought that was because it was more of the 80s, yeah, into the 80s.
- 46:13Dylan: Man, that would have been such a great part of the movie, just the running gag of him going after Slimer.
- 46:21Joe: Yeah, totally.
- 46:24Joe: So yeah, and the chord sequence has a lot of practical effects.
- 46:28Joe: Um so like there's flying furniture and wind and lights kind of going off, and wherever the streams would land, they had placed sparks at the end of those.
- 46:41Joe: So they would just point towards the spark and then it would go off, and then they would connect it digitally, you know.
- 46:48Dylan: Nice.
- 46:49Joe: And because digital effects were coming up and getting better, they were able to do better comps.
- 46:56Joe: Um, so like with the Scoleri brothers flying around in the courthouse and everything, they were able to do that better than the first one.
- 47:03Joe: Yeah.
- 47:04Joe: Um I don't know what you thought, but I felt like it was it was a lot better, like the the comping and it yeah, you know, like like the dog we talked about kind of floated, you know, whereas like they were supposed to be floating, so right, and then the design of the Scoleri Brothers were uh inspired by the Blues brothers.
- 47:29Joe: I could see that, I could see that, yeah, yeah.
- 47:32Joe: But you know, again, with the cartoon having so much popularity, the uh all the ghosts were influenced more by the cartoon, yeah, and having more of a di design from the cartoon than they would like a like the first one where it's like more horror influence, actual people, yeah, versus more of the I don't know, Muppet type, if you will.
- 48:00Joe: Yeah.
- 48:01Dylan: I enjoyed that though.
- 48:03Dylan: I enjoyed that more about the second one.
- 48:05Joe: Yeah, the the the create like the the look of the ghost.
- 48:10Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 48:11Dylan: Alright, Joe.
- 48:12Dylan: So what would you say is some of your favorite scenes?
- 48:18Joe: Um, you know, it's funny the The Titanic showing up.
- 48:21Joe: Yes, the part where it says better late than never.
- 48:30Joe: I think the so the original um the sequence where the coat comes alive and then there's like slime in the theater and all that stuff.
- 48:42Joe: That was originally supposed to be in the first one.
- 48:44Joe: But yeah, but I love that they saved it anyway because just like you know, she's walking around and then all of a sudden the coat comes alive and it's just like right.
- 48:56Joe: Um the courthouse scene is great because it shows like their camaraderie, you know, and they have like the um two in the box, ready to go.
- 49:08Joe: We be fast, they be slow.
- 49:12Dylan: Yeah.
- 49:13Dylan: Is that from the um from the cartoon?
- 49:17Joe: I don't think so.
- 49:18Joe: They just came up with that, they just came up with that, yeah.
- 49:22Dylan: And that that's the cool thing, is like different situations like that where they already have like this established friendship and you know, sayings and yeah, because I totally thought with that, I was like, I wonder if that's like a line from the cartoon, you know, because it's it's so established already, you know.
- 49:41Dylan: It yeah, it didn't, you know, seem like a spur of the moment thing.
- 49:47Dylan: So yeah, I was like, I wonder.
- 49:49Joe: Yeah.
- 49:52Dylan: But um, yeah, one of my favorite scenes is definitely just the whole courtroom.
- 49:58Joe: Yeah.
- 49:59Dylan: Like the between like the scolari brothers and the all the practical effects, everything like that, it was just so well put together.
- 50:10Joe: Yeah, with with uh Lewis being their their uh lawyer and then the judge getting, you know, basically gonna throw them in prison forever.
- 50:20Joe: Right.
- 50:21Joe: And uh and then he has to let them go.
- 50:28Dylan: Yeah.
- 50:30Dylan: Yeah, and all of the heads in the subway is just crazy.
- 50:35Joe: Yeah, like where did that come from?
- 50:37Dylan: Yeah, totally was not expecting that, yeah.
- 50:40Joe: And then it to me, that's the only scary part of this movie, yeah.
- 50:44Joe: Other other than the Janos uh coming to pick up the baby thing, that that was weird.
- 50:51Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 50:52Dylan: I didn't realize that's who it was supposed to be, yeah.
- 50:56Joe: And she says that uh because I I saw like you know, I saw him and I was like, is that him?
- 51:02Joe: And then later on she says it wasn't it wasn't just the ghost, it was Janos, like possessed or something like that.
- 51:08Joe: Yeah, it's crazy.
- 51:11Joe: Because totally dressed up as a nanny.
- 51:17Dylan: Yeah, and the Statue of Liberty.
- 51:19Dylan: Yeah, I was like, What what is this?
- 51:23Dylan: What are we doing?
- 51:24Dylan: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 51:26Joe: And the scale of things kind of was weird because I I don't know that if you were peeping out of her crown that you would be that big.
- 51:36Joe: Yeah, yeah, right, yeah.
- 51:38Joe: There's some things that are like, hmm.
- 51:41Dylan: We've taken the liberty because it's a movie.
- 51:44Joe: Yeah.
- 51:45Joe: We've gotten this far into the movie.
- 51:47Joe: Let's just let it go.
- 51:50Dylan: Yeah.
- 51:51Dylan: Need a little suspension of disbelief, right?
- 51:53Joe: Yeah.
- 51:54Joe: The amount of one-liners um that you know that they they have, and especially Bill Murray, like they tried to in the first one, they tried to save a lot for him, but you know, it got kind of spread around.
- 52:11Joe: And this one, they all have good lines, and yeah, but he really, you know, as Peter Vinkman just really has brings it home.
- 52:19Joe: Yeah.
- 52:20unknown: Yeah.
- 52:22Dylan: Another another favorite scene, specifically in the courtroom scene.
- 52:29Joe: Yeah.
- 52:29Dylan: I loved the effect of the goo like boiling up while the um while the judge is like, you know, ranting.
- 52:39Dylan: Yeah.
- 52:40Dylan: And it's just like, you know, they're trying to like interrupt it and be like, oh, something.
- 52:45Joe: Oh, yeah.
- 52:47Dylan: But that like you can totally see where it was like, you know, coming up from under the table and had that under lighting to it.
- 52:58Joe: Yeah.
- 52:58Dylan: And I just thought that was such a cool effect.
- 53:01Joe: Yeah.
- 53:03Joe: Yeah.
- 53:04Joe: Yeah, that was definitely good.
- 53:05Dylan: All right, Joe.
- 53:06Dylan: So let's round out our behind-the-scenes nuggets.
- 53:09Joe: Yeah, apparently a lot of people felt like the original script that they started with wasn't what they ended up with.
- 53:17Dylan: Oh, really?
- 53:18Joe: Um, and Bill Murray had said in an interview that he and other cast members signed on to the film based on a script they didn't use.
- 53:28Joe: Oh.
- 53:28Joe: And it ended up not being the story they wrote.
- 53:31Joe: And they they got them under in this into the sequel under false pretenses.
- 53:37Joe: Um, Harold had a great idea, but by the time they got shooting, uh they showed up on the set and went, what the heck is this?
- 53:47Joe: Wow.
- 53:48Joe: Yeah.
- 53:49Joe: And so, you know, they just had to go with it, and it just wasn't what they thought it was gonna be.
- 53:56Joe: For me, I I think like I think it was good for for what it was, but yeah, you know, what it could have been is is different too.
- 54:04Dylan: Um so did they ever like release or say like what it would have originally started off as then?
- 54:13Joe: I know that the little bit of it being darker and having a different tone to it, um, Dana and Peter being together for the five years and having a baby, and you know, so some of that stuff um would have been in it.
- 54:29Joe: Um, and I there's probably would have probably been more Winston from what it sounded like, and a little more fleshing out of characters and backup and stuff.
- 54:39Joe: So um the poster, album cover, and publicity photos prominently show them in the darker uniform.
- 54:50Joe: Uh and in the finished film, the new uniforms appear briefly during the montage, and Winston wears uh one uh with the dancing toaster scene.
- 55:02Dylan: Yeah.
- 55:03Joe: Um, but I guess Ivan Reitman didn't like the look of the new outfit, so he decided to just go back to the originals.
- 55:10Dylan: Oh yeah.
- 55:12Dylan: Like it wasn't as like recognizable pretty much.
- 55:16Joe: Yeah, it just kind of yeah.
- 55:18Joe: I feel like it's a it's a choice.
- 55:21Joe: Um it's a darker choice, you know.
- 55:24Joe: Yeah.
- 55:24Joe: If like if you're gonna be in that darker, you know, kind of movie, then you know, would do that.
- 55:32Dylan: But man, I wonder how many, like, you know, how many Olympic-sized swimming pools they needed to make all that goo in the tunnel.
- 55:41Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 55:43Joe: Thankfully it was a set, but you know, but yeah, it was it was uh I forget what the number was, but it was gallons and gallons of the stuff.
- 55:54Dylan: Uh yeah.
- 55:55Joe: Yeah.
- 55:56Dylan: I bet.
- 55:57Joe: Just to cover you and the, you know, and then to have like more of a river of it is tons.
- 56:04Dylan: Right.
- 56:04Dylan: Because I assume that that was probably, you know, computer.
- 56:09Joe: Some of it was, yeah.
- 56:10Joe: But a lot of it was practical.
- 56:13Dylan: Yeah.
- 56:13Dylan: Like the stuff on them, I'm sure.
- 56:15Dylan: Yeah, when they're coming out and the only time it was like like super noticeable was when it was like the pulled out shot of it like covering the museum.
- 56:30Dylan: But even then they still mixed it with the close-up shots of it oozing out and down.
- 56:36Dylan: Yeah.
- 56:36Joe: So that's what I love about like even the older movies is they they mixed like the bathtub scene.
- 56:43Joe: Um it's coming out of the you know, pipes and stuff, and then it becomes this creature, and then that's kind of where the effects take over.
- 56:53Joe: Yeah, you know, but there's a good amount of the blend of setting it up practically and right, you know.
- 56:59Dylan: So where would you say that this lands on our spooky meter?
- 57:04Joe: Hmm.
- 57:06Joe: 7.8.
- 57:10Dylan: So far we have the Lost Boys, who is our, you know, our vampires, the 80s.
- 57:17Dylan: Yeah.
- 57:18Dylan: And then we have Knight of the Living Dead, our ghouls.
- 57:25Dylan: And now this one, we have our ghosts.
- 57:29Dylan: Yes.
- 57:30Dylan: So Slimers.
- 57:32Dylan: Slimers.
- 57:34Dylan: I would say it definitely, you know, leans on that funnier, you know, campier side of Halloween, though.
- 57:42Joe: Yeah.
- 57:42Joe: And like their whole concept too was like they wanted more Mark's brothers, three stooges, and have Dana still be the straight person in the, you know, and she's amongst all these, you know, dwarfs.
- 57:56Joe: Goofballs.
- 57:56Joe: Yeah, goofballs.
- 57:58Joe: Yeah, and they do some slapstick that's that's reminiscent of that, yeah.
- 58:04Joe: So yeah.
- 58:06Dylan: So which would you rather put on during October Halloween season?
- 58:13Joe: Man, that's you got me up against the wall.
- 58:19Joe: Um I still think spooky season for me is more of a Lost Boys.
- 58:28Dylan: Yeah.
- 58:29Joe: Yeah.
- 58:30Joe: I love I love Ghostbusters 2.
- 58:32Joe: I do.
- 58:33Joe: But I think when it like, and that's a movie I can watch all year round, you know, whether it's Ghostbusters or Ghostbusters 2.
- 58:42Joe: To me, I don't think that ghosts have a time of year, right?
- 58:48Joe: But I really feel like vampires kind of define that.
- 58:52Joe: Yeah.
- 58:53Dylan: I can see that.
- 58:54Joe: Yeah.
- 58:56Joe: What about you?
- 58:58Dylan: Um, I mean, I think this is definitely more of my speed.
- 59:03Dylan: Yeah.
- 59:03Dylan: The the the more comedy, funny, campy side.
- 59:07Joe: Yeah.
- 59:08Dylan: Um I definitely did enjoy Lost Boys and would have that on the rotation.
- 59:13Joe: Yeah.
- 59:14Dylan: You know, so a little bit a little bit of everything for me.
- 59:18Dylan: Yeah.
- 59:20Dylan: So okay, would you say if the first Ghostbusters didn't exist and the movie, you know, and this movie like was a standalone, do you think people would like it more?
- 59:35Joe: That's hard.
- 59:36Joe: Because if you don't have your characters established, it doesn't really give, you know, like you'd have to have the characters established in order.
- 59:46Joe: Like if they established the characters and then went into the story, I do feel like it it could stand on its own.
- 59:54Joe: Um I surprisingly was like, this movie is way better than I remember it.
- 1:00:01Dylan: Oh yeah.
- 1:00:02Joe: Yeah.
- 1:00:02Joe: I was just like, whoa, why why haven't I been watching this?
- 1:00:05Joe: You know?
- 1:00:07Dylan: So yeah.
- 1:00:09Dylan: Just had some big shoes to fill.
- 1:00:10Joe: Mm-hmm.
- 1:00:11Dylan: Did but I mean, I still definitely think that there's, you know, good parts of it that easily can stand upon its own.
- 1:00:20Dylan: So I mean, yes, you would have to, you know, establish the characters better.
- 1:00:25Joe: So at the beginning I asked what you wanted from a Ghostbusters sequel.
- 1:00:29Joe: Did Ghostbusters 2 actually give you that?
- 1:00:32Dylan: Oh yeah, the Titanic coming back?
- 1:00:39Dylan: But yeah, I definitely think it it was able to fill kind of that slot though.
- 1:00:46Dylan: Yeah.
- 1:00:47Dylan: You know, I liked that it was, you know, more kid friendly.
- 1:00:55Dylan: I mean, I would have been fine with it either way, for sure.
- 1:00:58Dylan: Right.
- 1:00:59Dylan: But um, you know, I do I do like the the more kid friendly aspect of it, other than the heads in the tunnel.
- 1:01:07Joe: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:01:08Dylan: That really but I would say out of an overall rating though, I'd probably give it an eight.
- 1:01:16Joe: Wow.
- 1:01:16Joe: Yeah.
- 1:01:19Joe: All right.
- 1:01:19Joe: I'm right there with you.
- 1:01:21Dylan: Yeah.
- 1:01:21Dylan: Yeah.
- 1:01:22Dylan: No, no point one three four five six eight point one.
