- 0:01Dot com Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to
- 0:06kick start your day in a positive way.
- 0:08I'm your host Anna Mcgibbon for November 3rd.
- 0:10Today is National Sandwich Day, celebration of what might be the
- 0:15world's most perfect food invention.
- 0:18Legend has it that in 1762, John Mantegu, the 4th Earl of
- 0:24Sandwich, was so engrossed in a gambling game that he didn't
- 0:28want to leave the table to eat. But we asked for his meat to be
- 0:32served between two pieces of bread, allowing him to eat with
- 0:36one hand while continuing to play cards with the other.
- 0:41Whether this story is entirely true or partly legend, the
- 0:45sandwich stuck. And thank goodness it did,
- 0:49because what would lunch be like without sandwiches?
- 0:53From the humble peanut butter and jam that fueled our
- 0:56childhoods to the elaborate club sandwich stacked high with
- 1:00Turkey bacon and all the fixings, sandwiches have become
- 1:04a universal language of comfort and convenience.
- 1:08They're democratic, equally at home in a brown paper lunch bag
- 1:11and on the menu of a five star restaurant.
- 1:15They're portable, customizable, and infinitely variable.
- 1:19National Sandwich Day is our annual reminder to appreciate
- 1:22this brilliant culinary innovation that brings people
- 1:25together one delicious bite at a time.
- 1:29And that brings us to today's quote from an unknown author who
- 1:34wisely observed life is like a sandwich.
- 1:40You have to fill it with the best ingredients.
- 1:44This simple quote captures something profound about both
- 1:47sandwiches and life itself. Think about it.
- 1:52A sandwich is only as good as what you put into it.
- 1:55Start with stale bread and a questionable lunch meat and
- 1:59you're in for a disappointing meal.
- 2:02But take quality ingredients, fresh bread, ripe tomatoes,
- 2:06crisp lettuce, flavorful cheese, and suddenly you've got
- 2:10something special. Life works the same way.
- 2:14We're all building our own sandwiches every single day.
- 2:17The bread represents the foundation, our values, our
- 2:21character, the filling. Those are our choices, our
- 2:25relationships, our experiences, our attitudes.
- 2:29And here's the beautiful part. Unlike the Earl of Sandwich's
- 2:33original meat, between bread creation, our life sandwich
- 2:38doesn't have to be limited to what's immediately available.
- 2:41We get to be intentional about our ingredients.
- 2:44We can choose kindness over bitterness.
- 2:48We can select gratitude instead of complaint.
- 2:52We can add layers of learning, friendship, venture and purpose.
- 2:57This, like a master sandwich maker, knows that balance
- 3:00matters. You don't want too much of one
- 3:03thing overwhelming everything else.
- 3:05We need balance in life too. All work and no play makes for a
- 3:10pretty one note existence. Just like a sandwich with only
- 3:14mustard wouldn't be very satisfying.
- 3:17So here's your challenge for National Sandwich Day.
- 3:22Think about your life sandwich. Which ingredients are you using?
- 3:27Are you filling your days with activities and people that
- 3:29nourish you, or are you settling for the stale and flavorless?
- 3:35Are you adding new experiences and learning opportunities or
- 3:39sticking with the same old routine?
- 3:42Today, celebrate sandwiches. Maybe grab your favorite one for
- 3:46lunch or try making something new at home.
- 3:51But also take a moment to consider if your life were a
- 3:54sandwich, would it be 1 you'd be excited to eat?
- 3:58Remember, you're the sandwich artist here.
- 4:02You get to choose the ingredients.
- 4:04So make it delicious, make it nutritious, make it uniquely
- 4:09yours, and don't be afraid to add a little something
- 4:12unexpected. That's often where the magic
- 4:15happens. After all, life's too short for
- 4:17boring sandwiches. That's going to do it.
- 4:20For today. I'm Andrew McGivern, signing off
- 4:22for now, but I'll be back tomorrow.
- 4:28Same pod time, same pod station with another daily quote.
