- 0:00Uh oh. That's why I've hidden that's why
- 0:01I've hidden their faces behind the M
- 0:03stands. You'll never get me. They're
- 0:05anonymous. Matt, could you make like an
- 0:06episode? I'm aware that's a faux paw and
- 0:08I'll move the table in the future. I
- 0:10haven't figured out where to put it. But
- 0:11me and Joe are kind of the first
- 0:12sacrifices to
- 0:14What's up, dogs? What's up? How's it
- 0:17going? Good to see you. You guys brought
- 0:19some magazines. Oh, yeah.
- 0:23Do you want to start introducing your
- 0:24mag? Oh, I got too many AARP magazines.
- 0:28What is What is that? It's for It's the
- 0:30American Association of Retired People.
- 0:33Oh, nice. Wait, it's gender neutral.
- 0:36It's
- 0:38anyone can retire. It's actually retired
- 0:40folks.
- 0:41That's the ar That's for retired. H O L.
- 0:48Um, but yeah, I don't know why I get
- 0:50these, but I get them every month. Wait,
- 0:53those go to your house? They go to my
- 0:55apartment. Okay, interesting. They are
- 0:56in my father-in-law's name. Okay. Who is
- 1:00not retired.
- 1:03That would wrong if you're just hiding
- 1:04from everybody. You're like 64 or
- 1:06something. Yeah. I got great jeans.
- 1:10Yeah. I got a pacemaker and great jeans.
- 1:13We're going to collage the heck out of
- 1:14those. Oh yeah. Wait, is that where
- 1:16Trump is on the cover of the Trump?
- 1:18Well, this is a I've been getting these
- 1:20for months. So this is a from the
- 1:22election where they stand for retired
- 1:25people. Trump v Kamla. I'm just until AP
- 1:31tells me I don't know who's president.
- 1:35I was still like I got to I got to see
- 1:36who vote for. Yeah. Freddy, you got some
- 1:39too. I do. Ultimately I am the
- 1:40beneficiary of a roommate who is very
- 1:43creative and for her birthday um she got
- 1:45a bunch of these and then I took them
- 1:47cuz uh her birthday was a month ago. So
- 1:49I think that'll probably be fine. I'm
- 1:50really excited about this llban one
- 1:52because it's a man and a woman walking a
- 1:54dog and I'm excited to take the man and
- 1:55put the collar on him and have the woman
- 1:57kind of walking him. It's kind of what I
- 1:59intend to do with the magazine. Kind of
- 2:01a statement reverse Sabrina Carbon which
- 2:03would have been cool if I made Yeah,
- 2:04exactly. woman's best friend. Um I that
- 2:08espresso meod
- 2:13like wait a second. Um, no, no, no. I I
- 2:16do realize that it would have been
- 2:17cooler if I had done that and then told
- 2:18you guys I had done it, but just know
- 2:19that that is what I planned to do. I
- 2:21like it. No, I like that. I I like the
- 2:23planning the crafts. I like to kind of
- 2:24the ahead of time saying what the plan
- 2:26is and then see what actually occurs.
- 2:28You're like an art babe Ruth.
- 2:33I think combining these is going to be
- 2:34pretty cool. Put Trump's head on the
- 2:37Trump. Wait, what's that? What's that
- 2:39big thick thing you got there behind?
- 2:41Oh, this is the American Art Review. Oh,
- 2:43which I think is going to be really fun
- 2:45watching. This is Harper's Bizaarre, Nat
- 2:48Geo, which apparently has like a World
- 2:50War II section that we're really going
- 2:51to get into. And then a House Beautiful,
- 2:53the outdoor issue, and then a bunch of
- 2:55lilac uh colored construction paper. Oh,
- 2:58nice. Okay. Freddy's magazine's like uh
- 3:01I don't know, like portraying a cultured
- 3:02person. Joe is just like old.
- 3:05Once again, this is not me. I can't
- 3:07emphasize that enough. Yeah. I mean, I'm
- 3:09still under your roof, though. I don't
- 3:10know. That's true. That's true.
- 3:13Don't come for my wife later.
- 3:17Yeah, your wife really needs to step it
- 3:18up in the magazine.
- 3:20I'll text her now. Your wife's dad
- 3:23specifically.
- 3:25My wife's father will be hearing about
- 3:27this. Wait. Oh my god. Congratulations
- 3:29on your marriage. Oh yeah.
- 3:33Mostop, you got the no ring. I got a
- 3:35ring. Oh, there it is. Hey,
- 3:38how did you pick the ring? How is uh I
- 3:40It's uh the same. It's a like a
- 3:42basically a normal ring, but then
- 3:44there's like a band of the same stone
- 3:47that she has in her engagement ring.
- 3:50Nice. A little bit of It's like kind of
- 3:53Wait, are they not identical engagement
- 3:55rings? It's the a band of the same
- 3:57stone. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Did you get an
- 3:59engagement ring or does that not No, I
- 4:01don't think that's like a hit thing.
- 4:03Brutal. I know. That is brutal. I I
- 4:07don't know. it. I just didn't want her
- 4:09to pay for Cuz we spent way less money
- 4:11on the wedding rings than the engagement
- 4:14ring. Oh, cuz you can get those. You can
- 4:16get a wedding ring on Etsy for like 80
- 4:19bucks. Pretty good. That's cool. Where
- 4:21where did you get married? City Hall.
- 4:24Gotcha. Understood. Or whatever. Like
- 4:26the Yeah, I didn't mean to say that so
- 4:28flatly. Like I You know, you know how
- 4:31did you get married? It's like
- 4:33understood.
- 4:35City Hall should have like a like a very
- 4:37bureaucratic reception that you can also
- 4:40have. Like they've got the like you can
- 4:42do the paperwork. They should also have
- 4:43another room where they have like a
- 4:44slice of cake. Yeah. Those like mini
- 4:47cupcakes. I was going to say the one,
- 4:49right? Whether you love each other.
- 4:53You have to get married by the
- 4:54comproller or whatever.
- 4:57D any of the arts and crafts sticking
- 4:58out to you? I'm I'm going down the line
- 5:00a little Um, I'm a big I'm a big pipe
- 5:01cleaners guy, I got to say. But I would
- 5:04love to do some collaging with some of
- 5:06the the face. There's a specific phrase
- 5:09that's belonging to me at the AP
- 5:11magazine. Um, there's just a an article
- 5:14titled hold on to your teeth.
- 5:17So, I'd like to dive into that, I think.
- 5:19Oh, hell yeah. Yeah. I think that's my
- 5:22plan is is figuring out how I can hold
- 5:24on to my teeth. Going dental. I'm going
- 5:27dental. Did you make that shirt, by the
- 5:28way? Um, my friend actually did. My
- 5:30friend has a band uh that changes names
- 5:34every time they perform. Um, so this is
- 5:37when they were um at Stan's Brris. Oh,
- 5:40that rules. Which is a great They
- 5:42perform at a bris. No, no, no, no. It
- 5:44was at O'Brien's
- 5:47Massachusetts. O'Brien.
- 5:49RIP Great Scott. Same ownership group.
- 5:52Oh, I forgot to mention
- 5:54Scott coming back. Oh, very interesting.
- 5:57This isn't of this isn't of interest to
- 5:58anybody watching. But that's the beauty
- 6:00of it. All these folks are from Boston.
- 6:02What up? These are all comedians in New
- 6:03York who are formerly lived in Boston.
- 6:06God's favorite city. Count the rings of
- 6:09time. Count the [ __ ] rings. I will
- 6:11say when you said O'Brien's it was kind
- 6:13of like, yeah, that's going to be a
- 6:14Boston bar.
- 6:18You guys been to a Mali's or is that
- 6:20like You're right. Yeah. Every We never
- 6:22made it out of the pandemic. I'm sure if
- 6:24you could like chart like most bars
- 6:27called Murphy's Law Per City. Yeah.
- 6:33Uh oh. Okay. Yeah. My name's Andrew.
- 6:35What's up? I anticipate being kind of
- 6:37dead uh dead weight on the whole art
- 6:40thing here. I I I was squatting on this
- 6:43issue of AARP magazine with Rod Stewart
- 6:46on the cover. The great Rod Stewart. Uh
- 6:48hold on to your teeth. 14 rules to smile
- 6:51about. rules to smile about. I uh guy
- 6:55who smiles about rules. Yeah, here's a
- 6:58rule. No running.
- 7:02Retired narc.
- 7:05Sorry, I don't anticipate this being
- 7:06very exciting while I find this article.
- 7:08If you want to if everyone wants to like
- 7:10reintroduce themselves or something. Are
- 7:12you guys both you guys are both drawn to
- 7:13the teeth one? I guess we're both drawn
- 7:15to I just want clarification on what
- 7:17this article is. Are they trying to help
- 7:18you keep your teeth? We're going to have
- 7:19to kill each other. We have to know.
- 7:20Yeah. Cannot emphasize enough. I have
- 7:22like nine magazines. This thing is so
- 7:25important. Let's get Let's get them out.
- 7:26What about sex in your 60s? Oh, I like
- 7:29that. Yes. Yes. Yes.
- 7:33Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. It can
- 7:36still be great. Okay. That would be so
- 7:40fun, dude. That would rock if ARP had
- 7:42like an article that was like sexier 60s
- 7:44dot dot. Gross.
- 7:48Stop it.
- 7:50dry. But yes, it is an article about
- 7:52like tooth care and just about how
- 7:54having teeth is cool. I'm going to go
- 7:57down the rabbit hole the the art and
- 7:58then I'm going to be really cool. I feel
- 8:00like they'd be great collage kind of
- 8:02it's a it's it's a real opportunity to
- 8:04take a person in the art magazine and
- 8:05put a different head on them. I feel
- 8:07like that's kind of a natural thing that
- 8:08calls Oh, absolutely. Most of collage is
- 8:11just switching switching heads. Oh,
- 8:13dude. Somebody's already collaged here,
- 8:15dude.
- 8:16collage. This was it was a collage
- 8:18birthday party. So I think that is where
- 8:19the magazines came from. So this it's
- 8:22already been scred for collage material.
- 8:24Sloppy seconds of collage. All the all
- 8:26the best photos have already been so
- 8:29far. This is less of a collage thing and
- 8:31more we're just riffing on magazines.
- 8:33This one's a not to continue exactly
- 8:36what you said, but ARP is your car
- 8:40spying on you?
- 8:45My guess is no.
- 8:48For ARP to lean into like like
- 8:49conspiracy theories for old people to be
- 8:51like, "Turn on Fox News right now."
- 8:54Dude, if the printed upside down, dude,
- 8:57if the Chinese are spying on my parents
- 8:59with their like car, like what a
- 9:01profound waste of money that would be
- 9:03for them. The amount of like not useful
- 9:06information they're going to get. Like
- 9:07how often my mom listens to like Led
- 9:09Zeppelin or something.
- 9:11Let's get this one.
- 9:13Look at that. These folks kind of
- 9:15sleeping in a Sam circle. In a Sam. Is
- 9:18that a Thomas Hart Bon?
- 9:20Oh no magazine. Thomas Hart Ben's an
- 9:23American muralist.
- 9:25That's what you learn when you live in
- 9:27Boston.
- 9:31I did I did meet my wife at the Museum
- 9:34of Fine Arts. Is that true? Tell tell
- 9:37that story. That sounds interesting. We
- 9:39just both worked there. It's okay. I
- 9:42know.
- 9:43I I thought you were She was just like
- 9:45looking at a painting. You came up to
- 9:46her like I I did that. It's my painting.
- 9:50You know, that's not even the real Mona
- 9:51Lisa. I will say while you ideally tell
- 9:54us the story of you guys working there
- 9:56and then meeting each other, I am going
- 9:57to start collaging in the hopes that it
- 9:59will start other people also collaging.
- 10:01Um but that being said, Joe, please walk
- 10:03us through the moment that you laid eyes
- 10:04on your future wife. Yeah. Also, if
- 10:06anyone wants to put Jenn Ortega's head
- 10:09on somebody watching conference, I'm
- 10:11going for the same. Sure. Thank you.
- 10:14Well, you're going
- 10:16But uh I met We were both working there.
- 10:19Apparently, we both have the same name.
- 10:21You're like, I don't remember podcast.
- 10:23We're both Joe. And so, day one, I was
- 10:27getting shown around to the people
- 10:28working there and I got introduced to
- 10:30her. They're like, oh. She went, my
- 10:32name's Joe, too. And I said, "Oh no."
- 10:35And walked away. I didn't make a great
- 10:38first impression.
- 10:41Did you remember how her like face moved
- 10:43when you said, "Oh no." Was it like,
- 10:45"Oh, this is a funny, quirky guy." Or,
- 10:47no, she was like, "Oh, yeah. Saw her
- 10:51like, "Oh, I hope I never marry this
- 10:52guy." I'm walking down the street being
- 10:55like, "Damn, I hope I don't marry that
- 10:56guy.
- 10:59I'm used to that look.
- 11:01I'm used to seeing that look. I'm going
- 11:03to go I'm just going hard. I'm just
- 11:05immediately ripping out. I think we like
- 11:06been dating for like a week and then my
- 11:09parents went to the museum and we're
- 11:10like, "Are you Joe?"
- 11:13I'm one of the Joe's. She's like, "No,
- 11:14we're the parents of the other one."
- 11:18I'm looking through this room to see if
- 11:19Betty has any like family photos I can
- 11:21tear up.
- 11:24They already have the exit scratched out
- 11:26of the eyes. Yeah. Your mom is Rodster
- 11:28now. I kind of want to swap Sandler's
- 11:30head in the basketball that he's Oh,
- 11:33that's fun. That is fun. That is fun.
- 11:37Crazy stuff. I love how he's just
- 11:38holding a basketball on that cover like
- 11:41I had him have just have fun with these
- 11:42props. Now that I have you all here
- 11:45lulled into a false sense of comfort and
- 11:47collaging. What was the Boston comedy
- 11:49scene like?
- 11:51I found it to be pretty. I don't know. I
- 11:53like lived there I think before anybody
- 11:55in this room. So I maybe there's a
- 11:57pretty high turnover rate cuz like who
- 11:59who stays in Boston? That's true. Yeah,
- 12:02that's really true. I don't know. It's
- 12:04fine. I
- 12:06Is it very like they go to New York? Is
- 12:07that the Yeah, pretty much. They go to
- 12:09New York or they quit or they like start
- 12:11a family or something? Yeah. A lot of
- 12:13people start families. A lot of people
- 12:14having babies. A lot of people doing
- 12:17comedy as a hobby, which is fine.
- 12:20I agree. Um people people in Philly a
- 12:23lot of people had families but were
- 12:25doing still doing comedy. Was it like in
- 12:27Boston was it was that similar or no? I
- 12:30feel like there worse fathers in Philly.
- 12:31I don't know like just to have some some
- 12:34some pride
- 12:36okay D you've been in both of the two
- 12:39scenes. Yes. Is that genuinely a read?
- 12:42Is that genu
- 12:45or worse? I mean honestly yes. If this
- 12:48was a room full of Philly comics, would
- 12:50you be saying the opposite?
- 12:52I honestly do not think because I feel
- 12:54like in Boston, most of the people who
- 12:55have kids Oh, wait.
- 13:00You're like recalling specific fathers.
- 13:03Specific fathers. Yeah. Happy Father's
- 13:05Day to people who quit comedy in Boston.
- 13:08Um feel like a lot of them quit to spend
- 13:11time with their child, but in Philly
- 13:12they're just like, "Put the kid in the
- 13:14crib." You know, really in Philly,
- 13:17they're kind of like, uh, I'll leave my
- 13:18kid in this hot car while I go do an
- 13:20open mic for three hours. And it's worth
- 13:22it. It's worth it for to to hear those
- 13:24sweet sweet slurs at Raven Lou. Is there
- 13:27a lot of slurs in Philly? Oh, yeah. I
- 13:30would say I would say Philly is much
- 13:31worse than than Boston. That's actually
- 13:33surprising. It's not the reputation we
- 13:36have. Dave, you really should you should
- 13:37not have told me that. I'm really going
- 13:40to run with that for a while. I feel
- 13:42like for for the general open mic, I
- 13:45don't know, for like how uh
- 13:50how how hateful a person can be or not
- 13:53necessarily hateful because people in
- 13:55Philly aren't hateful. They just love
- 13:57slurs, you know? Well, in Boston, people
- 14:00are hateful.
- 14:02Wait, I would also like to briefly
- 14:03update everyone that I did successfully
- 14:05make it look like she's walking the man.
- 14:07Wait, that looks Wait, you were showing
- 14:10that. I honestly was pretty proud with
- 14:12how it turned out. It It happened really
- 14:14fast. Basketball head. Yeah. Do you want
- 14:16to feel free to get in there? Wait, that
- 14:18looks so good though. Also, I Oh, that's
- 14:20quite impressive. You did do that. Yeah,
- 14:23that's it. Worked out much better than I
- 14:25thought it would and much quicker. You
- 14:26uh you you really did Babe Ruth, your
- 14:28collage. I think I I think I genuinely
- 14:30used up all the luck that I have in my
- 14:31body in order in order to make Are you
- 14:33guys like good at art? And then I'm
- 14:35going to look. Okay. But that also is a
- 14:38sigh opt to distract us from the fact
- 14:39that Philadelphia is more racist than
- 14:41Boston. I'm glad we have that on the
- 14:42record. I didn't say more racist. I just
- 14:44said more slurs at the open. More
- 14:46racist. That's like a funny. That is
- 14:50cool. That was really cool. Slow the
- 14:52basketball. I'm like I'm like at home
- 14:54like clocking like individual black
- 14:56people in the audience this game. Like
- 14:58very interesting. Well, you know, I I
- 15:01saw a um it was like comics come home.
- 15:05So like and like the kids miss you.
- 15:10All the fathers that really
- 15:13please comics come home. Yeah, that is
- 15:15very misleading. It just does sound like
- 15:16a comedy show of bad dads. Well, that
- 15:19might also be true, but it was like I
- 15:21think it was for Dennis Lir's charity,
- 15:23so he had like they had to have him and
- 15:26he was I mean I don't Dennis Liry not
- 15:30great. First comedy album I ever owned.
- 15:32Yeah. Oh, yeah. Dennis Liry's No Cure
- 15:35for Cancer. Wow. Oh yeah. Yeah. That was
- 15:37like Yeah. I've heard that album. So
- 15:39like if you like said the first line at
- 15:41me of that album to be like across the
- 15:43street, my head would probably like snap
- 15:45at me when I finished the album. What
- 15:46are you an [ __ ] or something?
- 15:50I listen to it like so much song. Yes.
- 15:52Well, it ends with the [ __ ] song. I'm
- 15:54just a good Ever see the movie
- 15:57Demolition Man. Yeah. It's like uh it's
- 16:00like it's if you It takes place in a
- 16:02future where like you have to be PC and
- 16:04it's like evil like the album does. It's
- 16:06a concept. No, the movie Demolition.
- 16:10Yeah, it's a concept standup album.
- 16:12Yeah. The year is 2015 and stand up is
- 16:15against Eminem. Yeah. No, but it's like
- 16:18there's like a part of that movie where
- 16:19like he's like part of the underground
- 16:21resistance and he's like, I want to
- 16:23[ __ ] smoke a cigarette, eat a steak.
- 16:25It's like just a minute of the movie
- 16:26where he's like doing his act. It's so
- 16:28weird. It'd be like if you're like
- 16:30watching like another movie and like Jim
- 16:32Gaffkins showed up and just talked about
- 16:33escalators for like an hour. Like it's
- 16:36so weird. Wait, is Dennis Lirian
- 16:38demolition man? Yes. I totally thought
- 16:40that was Schwarzeneg. Oh, that is the
- 16:42lawnmower man. That's the lawn. No, no,
- 16:44no. You think that's the running man?
- 16:47Too many. The lawn mower man is Pierce
- 16:49Brosman.
- 16:51Yeah, I watched that recently. Yeah,
- 16:54it's nonsense.
- 16:57My head. I do like that. Apparently the
- 16:59director's cut is better. A few people
- 17:01in this room are like really just going
- 17:03into the magazine. I'll be honest. I'm
- 17:05going to go non-verbal while I do this.
- 17:07So, you guys feel free to keep that.
- 17:08Okay. So here well here's what I'm what
- 17:09I've been doing is I went through the
- 17:11art one. I went through this one. I just
- 17:12found all the coolest most interesting
- 17:13ones and I've been ripping them out
- 17:15first and then I'll combine them. Like I
- 17:16got like a guillotine. I got Hitler. I
- 17:18got a guy. Oh, you're going through the
- 17:20World War II. I'm going through real
- 17:22quick ripping them out and then and then
- 17:24I'll combine them. You want M&M's head?
- 17:27It's like I've got M&M's head for I'm
- 17:29saying I've got I've got like like take
- 17:31a now take a look at the ones I've got.
- 17:33Oh, for sure. Other group. Yeah. In lie
- 17:36of a collage. I'll just keep saying
- 17:37people that were in demolition. Man, do
- 17:39we only have Oh, hey, speaking of
- 17:41Boston, on the cover of this AARP
- 17:43magazine is the cast of the film 80 for
- 17:45Brady. Oh, I loved that movie. I've seen
- 17:48that movie three times. Yeah. Cried
- 17:51every time. Tom Brady's in it. Correct.
- 17:53Uh, briefly or Gro G Gron. I feel like
- 17:55I've se I saw Groon. I'm actually
- 17:57thinking of the movie Last Vegas, which
- 17:59is a different movie about four old
- 18:01people who do something fun. Yeah. I um
- 18:04I watched 80 for Brady just at a bunch
- 18:06of very low moments of my life and so
- 18:09it's it's really it's a good moment.
- 18:10It's I think it's a good movie. I hear
- 18:12that it's very heartwarming. Very
- 18:14heartwarming. This also was a few
- 18:15moments ago, but I love the idea that
- 18:16it's like I got a guillotine. I got
- 18:17Hitler. These are the things I found in
- 18:18AAP magazine.
- 18:21Okay. Well, actually, let me present
- 18:22real quick if you're all interested.
- 18:24Okay. We got We got Monle Guy.
- 18:27Be fun. We got Guillotine. We got Albert
- 18:30Einstein. You know, something with that
- 18:32guy. We got fighting stance. I like
- 18:35this one. I think I did for this.
- 18:37There's like a weird little uh thing of
- 18:39somebody Hold on. I could have kept
- 18:40that. Whatever. Uh they're kind this
- 18:42weird thing where they're like doing
- 18:44they're pinsering Hitler's arms. Oh,
- 18:46it's political comic, if you will. Got
- 18:48to [ __ ] with that. Wow. And there's also
- 18:50like stuff. Yeah. And then we got this
- 18:53one. We get this weird convicted. Oh,
- 18:55that is exactly if you want to replace a
- 18:57face with like Jen Ortega or something.
- 19:00Or if you want to put a little bikini on
- 19:01them. Oh my god. We got We got to
- 19:04combine them. We got to combine them.
- 19:07We got Hitler. We got Hitler. We got We
- 19:09got Hitler. We got Okay, now we're the
- 19:11art one. We got a romantic train scene.
- 19:12I thought that'd be funny to put maybe
- 19:14like Hitler's face or something. Uh,
- 19:16this one we got. They got this person in
- 19:18the hat. I like the hat. I kind of liked
- 19:22this outdoor scene. I think. Yes. Not
- 19:25that interesting. Whatever. Duck. Okay.
- 19:28Good duck. The sand guys. Uh, now in
- 19:30retrospect, the sand guys is more boring
- 19:32than I thought. And like this kind of
- 19:33outdoor scene. Do we only have two pairs
- 19:35of scissors? Yeah. Okay. Oh, you want
- 19:37the other one? Here you go. Oh, I can I
- 19:40can I can use I can grab I can grab more
- 19:42from the kitchen and from my shaving
- 19:44kit. Oh, I'm taking turns. If if this
- 19:48scissor hasn't touched your pubes, I
- 19:50don't want it.
- 19:55Yeah, that's my general rule. All right,
- 19:58now I'm now now while you guys are
- 20:00collaging. Now,
- 20:02actually, I'm going to let them do it in
- 20:03silence. Look at that. Oh, look at
- 20:06comics come home. Oh, yes. pre- divorced
- 20:09Melany was there because a Boston guy
- 20:13dropped out and he was Boston enough and
- 20:15he opened was like so my wife's Jewish
- 20:18and the guy behind me booed on and then
- 20:21looked around like I thought we were all
- 20:23Jew they're busting in Philadelphia
- 20:27flag they weren't booing for Jews they
- 20:29were booing for the wife he was like I
- 20:30thought you were gay
- 20:33that guy was booing like you should get
- 20:34a divorce cuz it'll lead to a new
- 20:36autistic era in your career
- 20:39Some will say, "We'll we'll revitalize
- 20:40you creatively."
- 20:43Oh, wa. These guys are spies.
- 20:45I thought they were going to be killers.
- 20:48I guess they could be. Um, I do like
- 20:51some spies probably. That is true. If
- 20:54James Bond tells me anything, you know.
- 20:57Um, you really like those movies,
- 20:59correct? I do really like those movies.
- 21:01James Bond. Yeah. Big big James Bond. Do
- 21:04you have a favorite Bond film? I do.
- 21:05It's um I think A View to a Kill. The
- 21:09one with Christopher Walkan. There's
- 21:11Grace Jones in it. Correct. And Grace
- 21:12Jones. Yes. It's a terrible movie, but
- 21:15it is my favorite one. Okay. Yeah. And
- 21:17then Live and Let Die is just a good
- 21:18movie. So much of the British national
- 21:20identity is tied up in like a franchise.
- 21:22Like the best one is like a six out of
- 21:2410.
- 21:26I do want I want to see Boston James
- 21:28Bond.
- 21:32My name's Bond.
- 21:34You're looking at him, bro. Why is he
- 21:36like freaking Wow. Oh my god. Rabbit
- 21:40Man. Bugs Bunny. Just call Bugs Bunny
- 21:42rabbit man.
- 21:44That's not good. That is a sign of of a
- 21:46deteriorating brain. Um you've been
- 21:49you've been away from the East Coast for
- 21:51too long. Wait, no. The further probe
- 21:53this are Were you saying that Boston
- 21:55James Bond is basically Bug's Bunny?
- 21:58Yes, that's what I was trying in what
- 22:00way? And well, because the way Joe was
- 22:02was saying it, he sounded much like Bugs
- 22:04Bunny. Um, oh, so Joe's Bugs Bunny. Joe
- 22:07Joe as Boston James Bond is is Bugs
- 22:10Bunny. I would say trying to work on a
- 22:12bit. But Joe's a married man. He can
- 22:13never be James Bond.
- 22:16I like the idea that um like martini
- 22:19shakers like Q getting James Bond like a
- 22:22birthday gift and it's a martini shaker.
- 22:25Think about that. I don't know. Sort of.
- 22:28It's not It's not that It's like a cute
- 22:30idea. Like like dad James Bond just
- 22:33keeps getting like he's like, "Okay, I
- 22:35know I said this a lot. I have other
- 22:38personalities." Like a dad who's sick of
- 22:40getting Yeah. I mean, do you, James? Not
- 22:42like I can get you like a pocket [ __ ]
- 22:44for your birthday here for your family.
- 22:46I love the idea of um James Bond getting
- 22:48a gift from someone who doesn't know him
- 22:49very well, being like a martini stirer,
- 22:51and he's like, "You don't know me at
- 22:52all.
- 22:54[ __ ] you. You literally just need to
- 22:56watch one of my terrible movies.
- 22:59James Bond is like, "Watch my movies,
- 23:00man." Yeah, watch my [ __ ] He gets
- 23:03like a He gets like a handwritten, dude.
- 23:05That'd be so sick to be able to tell
- 23:07somebody. Yeah. Watch my [ __ ] movie,
- 23:09man. Demolition, man. Just to give a
- 23:11little bit of an update on the collage
- 23:13front. Right now, I'm planning on
- 23:14putting um the 80 for Brady cast
- 23:17underneath a caption that says the
- 23:18Atlanta Falcons. Oh, I think that'll be
- 23:21fun. Yeah. If you do If you do that,
- 23:22I'll walk out of here.
- 23:25I just I just did like a giant M&M's
- 23:27face soaking in color. Oh, that's fun.
- 23:30Oh, Rod Stewart. Yes, that
- 23:33I don't know what's going to come of
- 23:34this, but it feels right for now. And I
- 23:38have if anyone needs just the text, this
- 23:41is your captain speaking.
- 23:43I think that'll go well with something,
- 23:45but I don't know what just to pretend
- 23:48that this podcast has a has any sort of
- 23:50theme or uh recurring idea. Um, were you
- 23:54guys in the Boston scene together? No.
- 23:57So, I think we all over overlapped or so
- 24:00have left like right before I started.
- 24:02Yeah. I have zero overlap with you guys.
- 24:04Gotcha. Yeah. Yeah. And what what's the
- 24:06time? What's the timeline? And were you
- 24:09all enemies or friends? I moved in like
- 24:112018. Yeah. I think I I came back to
- 24:14Boston like really started in earnest
- 24:17September 2018. So, interesting. I like
- 24:19just missed you. Yeah. What was like the
- 24:22room for you? I hope this isn't the
- 24:24least interesting podcast. People just
- 24:27recalling defunct Boston Open. I think
- 24:29like like it was like Thunderbar and uh
- 24:34whatever Sean Carter ran. So it was like
- 24:36Sally O'Brien like and then like the No,
- 24:40I was going to say it's a rule we can't
- 24:42gossip about about comedians. Does that
- 24:44extend to Boston comedians? If I don't
- 24:47know him, go for it. I don't have
- 24:49anything malicious to say except for the
- 24:51fact that uh Yeah, I would say it was
- 24:55maybe I Yeah, but yeah, like and then I
- 25:00uh Yeah, those Midway, which was like
- 25:03the late night weird one. I kind of
- 25:05remember Midway. That was in Jamaica
- 25:06playing, correct? That was a little
- 25:07before I I remember you had to like walk
- 25:10kind of through like a deserted like
- 25:11remote area of Jamaica.
- 25:14Yeah. But then it would alternate
- 25:17between being like all
- 25:21alcoholics
- 25:22or like a weirdly full room like Yeah.
- 25:26And I remember seeing you at Midway one
- 25:28time actually. You really That was the
- 25:29first time my now wife saw me do comedy.
- 25:31Really? And right before at Midway. I
- 25:33know. Wow. She She is a keeper. Well,
- 25:37it's cuz she lived like a 5minute walk
- 25:39away and she's like, "I'm going to walk
- 25:40over." I'm like so close. I'm like,
- 25:41"Please don't." And she's like, "I'm
- 25:43there."
- 25:44And then right before I went up, a
- 25:46ventriloquist said a slur.
- 25:49Did he Did he say the slur or was it the
- 25:51puppet said the slur, but I know I know
- 25:54who really said it. I'm not fooled. I
- 25:56will say it's amazing. The lips don't
- 25:58move. It's fine. What? I feel like that
- 25:59bit really crosses like state lines. I
- 26:01feel like every state that I perform
- 26:03comedy in, I've seen a ventriloquist say
- 26:04a slur. racial puppet.
- 26:07I've genuinely never seen a
- 26:09ventriloquist not
- 26:12only. Well, they work in an antiquated
- 26:14art form. Why would they be bringing a
- 26:162025 attitude?
- 26:19There was some magician in I feel it's
- 26:21unreasonable to expect Jeff Dunham to
- 26:23have like contemporary views.
- 26:27I I I think I talked about this on other
- 26:29podcasts, but I think about all the
- 26:31time. I like I think in like New York
- 26:33magazine or something like that there's
- 26:34a profile on Jeff Dunham weirdly enough
- 26:37and like he was like at a ventriloquism
- 26:40convention and that was kind of like the
- 26:41thrust of the piece was following him
- 26:43this whole weekend and it said there was
- 26:45uh one of the paragraphs started with uh
- 26:48in the comedy world Jeff Dunham is the
- 26:50ultimate hack and the ventriloquism
- 26:52world he is borderline av on guard.
- 26:56I think about that all the time.
- 27:00Did you say there was a magician? Oh,
- 27:02yeah. There's a there's this magician in
- 27:03Philly. I'm now I'm doing a little bit
- 27:05of gossip, but this guy was like he like
- 27:07um he like spit on like a woman or
- 27:09something or I'm sorry. I'm sorry. It
- 27:11could be that the puppet did it. But I
- 27:14do I do think it was like like he was
- 27:16actively being rude and she was mad at
- 27:18him and then he had like he had the
- 27:20puppet like spray water on her and it
- 27:22wasn't on stage. It was like in
- 27:24conversation. He was using the puppet in
- 27:26conversation. Yeah. Oh, that's
- 27:28horrifying. like she was she was mad at
- 27:30him for something and then he did that
- 27:31and I remember I think he got kicked out
- 27:34of the I don't know but just funny
- 27:37random gossip that I can't ver I mean I
- 27:39was there so I can verify it happened
- 27:41but I can't verify who or what or why.
- 27:43Please welcome our fifth guest
- 27:46the puppet guy.
- 27:49I wish I I'll name dropper. One time me
- 27:52and Michelle Gold were joking about the
- 27:53idea of what if Akmed the dead terrorist
- 27:55was in Super Smash Brothers and we were
- 27:57laughing at the idea you pick him and
- 27:59the voice goes Amed and then the weote
- 28:01goes I killed you.
- 28:03That's it.
- 28:06I think about that a lot. I like how
- 28:08it's specifically for Smash Brothers
- 28:09Brawl. Yeah. Got to do it for the week.
- 28:11Let's put the Let's have a completed
- 28:13collages pile. Sure. Let's uh Okay. So,
- 28:16I've got the duck has his head chopped
- 28:18off and it's Albert Einstein as the
- 28:20head. Nice. Oh, that rocks. Joe's got
- 28:22Adam Sandler basketball playing
- 28:23basketball with Adam Sandler's head and
- 28:25Eminem nice in the Colorado.
- 28:30I'm I'm kind of starting a bit of a Oh,
- 28:32you're starting a whole ass thing. I'm
- 28:34making
- 28:35Can I get some some lilac paper, please?
- 28:37It's right uh over here. May I Does
- 28:41anybody have a fresh p like uh issue of
- 28:43AARP magazine that nobody's taken a
- 28:45scissors to yet? I think there's they're
- 28:47right in front of you. There's a couple
- 28:48untouched. There might be one on the
- 28:49crew. Oh man. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
- 28:56Oh, Kevin Cosner. I just saw this says
- 28:58Adam Sandler's straight man question.
- 29:02I think they meant to be like like
- 29:04comedy straight man. Yeah. Yeah. That's
- 29:06great. Um I will say on the subject of
- 29:08of Boston open mics, I kind of started
- 29:10in like 20 2020. So I guess like later
- 29:13than you guys. Um yeah. Yeah. Well, cuz
- 29:16I feel like Well, I was doing stand up
- 29:17before then, but I didn't do standup in
- 29:19the Boston scene for a while until like
- 29:20the pandemic cuz I feel like before then
- 29:21I was just kind of keeping it insular.
- 29:23And I remember like doing like college
- 29:25or something. Yeah. Yeah. But I remember
- 29:27seeing Joe for the first time in like 20
- 29:29maybe 2018 and you did that joke that
- 29:31was like um I've got a lot of
- 29:33butterflies in my stomach. I got to stop
- 29:35swallowing cocoons.
- 29:37Um and I remember being like that guy's
- 29:39a [ __ ] genius.
- 29:42What was the alt? So, you guys were in
- 29:43the alt scene or like you guys were in
- 29:45like a Is there an alt scene in Boston
- 29:48or didn't have like enough people to
- 29:49really do? There was one scene. Yeah. I
- 29:52don't think like the scene's big enough
- 29:53to have like lunch tables like that.
- 29:55Well, I don't know. When I was like when
- 29:57I did it, I feel like it was the vibe
- 29:59was a little more like towny on the
- 30:01whole. Did any of you guys ever do uh
- 30:03the tavern at the end of the world?
- 30:05Yeah, of course. That's like Scott do
- 30:08you do when Scotty Lombardo host it?
- 30:11Yeah. Well, no, I didn't do it, but I
- 30:13know him. No, you said that with I This
- 30:16might be breaking the golf. We're just
- 30:17competing tour guides. Oh, gotcha. One
- 30:20time I did Davin at the End of the World
- 30:23when like a Red Sox game was playing and
- 30:26nobody watched. It was like comedians
- 30:29and for a regular season Red Sox game.
- 30:31Yeah. It was just like that's strange.
- 30:34Yeah. This this feels like we're not
- 30:36breaking any bust.
- 30:38But like was it for real? like not even
- 30:40a playoff game. Yeah. Yeah. It was a
- 30:42midweek mid season and like everyone's
- 30:44like, "No, no, no. I got to I mean,
- 30:46that's ridiculous." But you saying that
- 30:47also kind of makes me go like, "You're
- 30:50probably What are What are some
- 30:52differences between the Boston scene and
- 30:54the New York comedy scene? New York is
- 30:57actual stakes. I don't know. Yeah, you
- 30:59could you could make something of your
- 31:01life here if you're lucky. Maybe I do
- 31:04think it kind of felt like the Boston
- 31:05scene. It's like an amazing place to I
- 31:08feel like get well this is this isn't
- 31:10what it is objectively. I feel like this
- 31:12is kind of how I personally used it was
- 31:14like I was really not good in Boston and
- 31:17uh it was more about just like trying to
- 31:18get reps in and like understand how
- 31:20standup worked and like try to develop a
- 31:21semblance of a voice and then once I
- 31:23feel like I moved here then I I didn't
- 31:25do like a ton of standup in Boston. I
- 31:27would do maybe like three open mics a
- 31:28week and then I feel like I came to New
- 31:30York and there's just so many more to
- 31:31do. I think theory qualifies a lot.
- 31:34Frank, in Boston, you only get like kind
- 31:36of one shot at it a night. You can't
- 31:38really like double up as they say. Yeah.
- 31:39I feel like New York is a great place to
- 31:41do like so many more open mics than you
- 31:43could ever fathom in Boston just cuz
- 31:45there are more and the scene is bigger.
- 31:47Yeah. Yeah. I think it's a knock on
- 31:49Boston to say it's like an incubator
- 31:50city. I mean, like where are you going
- 31:51to go? I was kind of dancing around
- 31:52that, but I didn't want to be offensive.
- 31:54No, no, it's totally. Yeah. I think uh I
- 31:57think the people in Boston like would
- 31:58agree with you. Yeah, I mean there are
- 32:01so many people that move from Boston to
- 32:02New York after a couple years that I
- 32:04think it is very much like a pipeline.
- 32:06Maybe like the I don't know. We're all
- 32:07It feels like goofy to use this
- 32:09descriptor about yourself. We're all
- 32:10like at least like alt adjacent comics
- 32:13and like I don't know maybe it's like
- 32:15different if you can kind of work the
- 32:16road regionally in New England. Yeah.
- 32:19Yeah. I think um Boston has well at
- 32:25least like when I left like cuz a lot of
- 32:27places closed because of the pandemic
- 32:30like there's a weirder it's I don't know
- 32:34if it's better it's definitely like a a
- 32:35different ceiling like there's like you
- 32:38kind of I think now more clubs have
- 32:41opened but like when I when I left there
- 32:42was only the one real like or like there
- 32:46was like two comedy clubs one that like
- 32:48booked like regularly like local acts
- 32:51and that was like closed when I left.
- 32:54Yeah. I feel like every couple would
- 32:56like had the same cadra of like a couple
- 33:00they didn't really book a lot of they
- 33:01didn't like constantly replenish who
- 33:03they had. So it was it was kind of like
- 33:05hard like once you like got like like
- 33:07I'm regularly doing bar shows. There's
- 33:09not really a place for you to go from
- 33:11there. And I think that's gotten better
- 33:13since I've left which is cool. Like I
- 33:16feel like there's a lot more stuff to
- 33:18do, but like it was like and some of the
- 33:20bar I would say some bar shows there are
- 33:22like pretty good
- 33:25[ __ ] talk the scene anyway like
- 33:28incubator city. It's like great. I have
- 33:30a wonderful I think there's a great
- 33:31sense of community there. There was when
- 33:33I I think I think it's inherent to any
- 33:36city that isn't New York or LA or where
- 33:38the industry lives. Like Philly is also
- 33:40like they're everything is a pipeline in
- 33:43like even New York is in a certain sense
- 33:45a pipeline to LA a little bit. You know
- 33:48what I mean? It's also like you can't
- 33:50have a satisfying like very whole career
- 33:52in Boston without like moving to New
- 33:54York and I think it's through like
- 33:55touring and through being like a regular
- 33:57at the main like uh like the hideout or
- 34:00I don't know. I I will say I lived there
- 34:02pre- pandemic and from what I understand
- 34:04and like what I see like the pandemic
- 34:06did like kind of [ __ ] that city over in
- 34:08a big like bad way. It's like every like
- 34:11cool bar that used to have like a show
- 34:13is now like a [ __ ] Shake Shack or
- 34:15something. Yeah, sure. Yeah. I mean like
- 34:18Great Scott like Rob built like such a
- 34:20good show there. Oh, Great Scott. Seeing
- 34:22that close was like I I it was like
- 34:24after I moved and it was still brutal to
- 34:26me to see Great Scott clothes. I love
- 34:27that. Sorry. No, sorry. Like cuz you or
- 34:31um whoever mentioned like being like
- 34:33altered like like a lot of like the the
- 34:34alt rooms were really hit hard by the
- 34:37pandemic like the rooms that had like
- 34:38built like a kind of like a punk rock
- 34:40like fall away
- 34:43I also don't I don't want to talk about
- 34:44the scene as being so segmented with
- 34:46like alt and mainstream rooms because
- 34:48one I I think one asset of that scene
- 34:50was and I'm not one of these people
- 34:52that's like you need to do [ __ ] every
- 34:53room and be good for every audience but
- 34:55like there was a lot of
- 34:56cross-pollination like alt alt rooms
- 34:59mainstreams, what have you. And I feel
- 35:01like that that that's good for your
- 35:03development as a comic to like be tested
- 35:05like that from an outside perspective.
- 35:07And based on what I've heard, it does
- 35:09sound like having talked to you guys a
- 35:10bit that after you left the scene, there
- 35:13was some sort of specific like queer
- 35:16comedy spaces that developed on purpose
- 35:19deliberately or something. That was like
- 35:21starting before I left. Like I like like
- 35:25I'm I'm weighing in from an outside
- 35:26perspective to go I think that was true
- 35:28when you were there, but I think when
- 35:29they were there it sounds like it had
- 35:31changed. I don't know. That's cool to
- 35:33hear. Yeah, that wasn't really a thing
- 35:34when I was there. Or maybe maybe it was
- 35:36happening. I just wasn't privy to it.
- 35:37Also, check this guy out. Look at it.
- 35:40We're getting mixed media. That rhymes.
- 35:43We're getting 3D. Wow. Hell yeah. Yeah.
- 35:46Get get a little mixed media. I had I
- 35:48was playing with the one pipe cleaner. I
- 35:50was like, I got to get that. That's my
- 35:51favorite one I've done so far. There's a
- 35:53movie called Brain Matter where that
- 35:55happens. So that's beautiful. Oh, but I
- 35:58wanted to say though um Oh, those
- 36:00queers. Yes.
- 36:03Like one month the Boston episode. Yeah,
- 36:06there was like one one monthly one
- 36:08monthly. I think it's definitely grown a
- 36:09lot recently. Yeah. I also feel like
- 36:12just in general, this is maybe Well, I'm
- 36:14going to make a grand generalization. I
- 36:16feel like post pandemic queerness did
- 36:19become a little bit more uh like I feel
- 36:22like at least through like Tik Tok and
- 36:23through like the way that comedy
- 36:24expanded in the pandemic online it felt
- 36:26like it was kind of quote unquote like
- 36:28cooler or more accepted to be queer in
- 36:30your comedy like weirdly I don't know if
- 36:32this is kind of a grand generalization
- 36:33but at least that's how I felt where it
- 36:35was kind of like there were queer scenes
- 36:37popping up partially because I think
- 36:38everyone had been home and all of a
- 36:40sudden uh I feel like there was a little
- 36:42bit more of like an introspection moment
- 36:44and a lot more people at least in my
- 36:45experience like came out as queer post
- 36:47pandemic or like came out as trans. And
- 36:49so I wonder if the Boston scene
- 36:52of course it's like once you get the jab
- 36:53it's like you're a homosexual and I
- 36:55think the Boston scene of course
- 36:56reflects that. Um but at least that was
- 36:58my experience there in like 2020 2021
- 37:01did feel like there was and I feel like
- 37:02you were there at the same time. It felt
- 37:04like there was like mo a lot of the
- 37:06comics that I met around my own age were
- 37:09gay in an interesting way. Yeah. Yeah.
- 37:12Gay.
- 37:13Can I hit a boring gay?
- 37:17Did Did you feel that shift happening in
- 37:19like your own standup personally where
- 37:20you became a discussion doing a grand
- 37:22generalization based on my own personal
- 37:24experience? Yeah. Yeah. I do think I
- 37:26think I felt that in my standup and then
- 37:28I also I think it's one of those it's
- 37:29like an it's like where you meet
- 37:31somebody and then all of a sudden you
- 37:32see them around the city where it's like
- 37:33because I noticed that in myself I feel
- 37:35like all of a sudden I was like seeing
- 37:36it constantly in other people. Yeah.
- 37:38Anyway, I think I think that's totally
- 37:41you think am I interpreting this right
- 37:44that you made Boston? Yeah. Yeah. What
- 37:47I'm saying is if I hadn't been there
- 37:49Yeah. You went to the park PlayStation
- 37:51set off a gay bomb.
- 37:53I just think it was it was interesting
- 37:54because it felt like the reputation of
- 37:56Boston was like very straight and very
- 37:58like square and then I feel like in the
- 38:002020 2021 scene like so many people were
- 38:02gay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I think so. Yeah.
- 38:05Definitely an emergence of queer comics.
- 38:07But I think you're totally right with
- 38:08that introspection thing that like a lot
- 38:10of people came out of the pandemic
- 38:12non-binary
- 38:14like I'm one of Yeah. one of those
- 38:15people. Honey, you're looking at them.
- 38:17Yeah. Exactly. Yeah. So there's just
- 38:19more queers around, I guess, or more
- 38:23Yeah. different identities and stuff.
- 38:25Well, up until that point, it had all
- 38:28sounded very parallel to the Philly
- 38:31scene where I feel like the alt scene, I
- 38:34mean, literally the alt scene did end in
- 38:36co like the there was like a big good
- 38:38comedy theater was like the main alt
- 38:40space and that ended. Um, I'm part of
- 38:42the Philly alt scene diaspora. Um, but I
- 38:45from what I understand it hasn't it has
- 38:48I mean maybe it has I but I'm not fully
- 38:50tapped into the scene but I haven't
- 38:52heard about like a like a queer revival.
- 38:54I mean I've done like cool shows there.
- 38:56No, there's cool there's certainly cool
- 38:57shows but it's it's and I think maybe
- 39:01we're thinking of the same ones like
- 39:02Tattooed Moms or something. But it's
- 39:04like but they were there
- 39:06Johnny Bryes. Yeah, Johnny. Johnny as
- 39:09well. Yeah, that's the put it down one.
- 39:10Yeah. Um uh shout out to the homies.
- 39:12shout out uh Funhouse as well. And but
- 39:15it's like a lot of those people were
- 39:16there pre- pandemic except for Fun
- 39:18House, but um I I feel like there's no
- 39:21like queer scene in Philly. It feels
- 39:24like Yeah. Yeah. Or at least I'm not
- 39:26tapped into it anymore. Yeah. And I'm
- 39:28definitely not tapped into I don't know.
- 39:30It's like I I did like maybe like one I
- 39:32think there's like a few shows that are
- 39:34kind and not that like things should be
- 39:36focused on that. Well, okay. Things
- 39:38should be focused. Okay. That's I'm
- 39:40getting you cancel. Um, but not that it
- 39:44has to be focused on that, but just I
- 39:45don't think there was a community spot
- 39:46for queer people to really hang out.
- 39:49Right. Right. Weird because Philly is so
- 39:51queer, but the comedy scene itself was
- 39:54like a neighborhood in the middle of
- 39:55Philly. Yeah. Yeah. Philly Phillyy's
- 39:57wonderful. Everyone's [ __ ] you know,
- 40:00Philly was very was very lunch table
- 40:02though with a thing of like you would go
- 40:04to some spaces and they would be like
- 40:06you're saying slurs and you go to other
- 40:08spaces and it's like if you said a slur
- 40:10you'd get like kicked out, you know what
- 40:11I mean? Um, so it's like very it feel
- 40:14kind of had a civil war.
- 40:17That is what it kind of seems like. That
- 40:19kind of Yeah, it does feel like for like
- 40:21Boston's reputation that was pretty
- 40:23universally enforced that if you said a
- 40:26slur, no slurs. Yeah. People would um
- 40:30at least at the very least complain
- 40:33about you behind your back.
- 40:35I want more. Oh, you would get so
- 40:37gossiped about
- 40:40at the very But usually like that would
- 40:42Did you hear Who's headlining next?
- 40:44Yeah. would play on my it would usually
- 40:47show up on like I feel like I don't
- 40:49know. I love I I really I really like
- 40:52had a very uh good experience with
- 40:56Boston comedy. Like I feel like I think
- 40:59it was very helpful to like start and I
- 41:02didn't move
- 41:04um
- 41:05I didn't move cuz I thought I got too
- 41:07big for it. like it was cuz like
- 41:10uh my then girlfriend now wife like got
- 41:13a job like so like I was only just
- 41:15starting to kind of get like better
- 41:18bookings in Boston and then like I I
- 41:21instantly killed that momentum by
- 41:22leaving
- 41:25I was like getting I was finally getting
- 41:26like regular like uh studio bookings and
- 41:29it was cool and then the studio closed
- 41:32because of co and other reasons.
- 41:38There's so much for such a a small
- 41:41mostly good scene. So much drama. I feel
- 41:44like
- 41:46a drama dense scene that happens the
- 41:48smaller the scene. I noticed I I the
- 41:51funniest thing I always think about is I
- 41:52did a I did stand up in Tokyo like uh a
- 41:56couple years ago and like it dramaless.
- 41:59No, so like more drama like the smaller
- 42:02the like the scene, the more protective
- 42:04people feel of it. And I remember I
- 42:06could be misremembering. I remember that
- 42:08like if you did shows for one guy in
- 42:11Tokyo, you were not allowed to do shows
- 42:13for another guy. And this is all like an
- 42:14expat English language comedy scene
- 42:17that's like generously like 30 to 50
- 42:20people large. It's like it's so goofy.
- 42:23Well, I wonder if it's like because it I
- 42:26guess I mean just intuitively it matters
- 42:28to everybody in the space. So like if a
- 42:30if a scene is 100 people and somebody
- 42:32wrongs somebody else, everybody is
- 42:34aware. Whereas like if somebody wrongs
- 42:35somebody in New York comedy, you might
- 42:37not even know them. You might not know
- 42:39either of the people. Yeah. Or just like
- 42:40just go to another room. Yeah. Right.
- 42:43Yeah. You're you're forced to be in
- 42:45proximity to these people these. Yes.
- 42:47And also like I don't know maybe it's
- 42:48just like kind of overcompensation
- 42:50effect like your mind does on its own
- 42:52where it's just again you feel more
- 42:53protective about this [ __ ] Yeah. If
- 42:55it's if it means less not to sound
- 42:57shitty there's a there's a Facebook
- 42:59group called Philly Comedy Network and
- 43:01that was the you know you know Yeah. I
- 43:04love PCN. Oh my god. The PCN is was it
- 43:07still is uh but back in the day it was
- 43:10like the core and heart of a lot of
- 43:12drama. We we have the same thing in Oh
- 43:16yeah. Awesome comedians Facebook group
- 43:18was like notorious. We had to make part
- 43:19two.
- 43:21A lot of puppet related drama. Oh yeah,
- 43:24there's that. Speaking of weird, I
- 43:26thought that's who you were talking
- 43:27about. I also thought you were talking
- 43:30about uh No, he but he does have he does
- 43:33have that. Are you allowed to say Are
- 43:35you allowed to say we have to keep
- 43:36dancing around the name Hosalito the
- 43:38puppet?
- 43:40That's awesome. I forgot about that one.
- 43:43I was thinking of I was thinking of of
- 43:45of Kevin Dris. It's so funny that there
- 43:47are multiple puppet guys to talk about.
- 43:49Yeah.
- 43:51The puppet guy. He really is like an art
- 43:53form for just the most blackhearted of
- 43:55people. Your your the puppet guy da
- 43:58mentioned I don't know if you saw Kevin
- 44:00Driscoll. Yeah. Yeah. He recently had I
- 44:02think the most hellish bit I've ever
- 44:04seen. He say hellish. Hellish. Okay.
- 44:07Okay. He put a puppet mouth on a human
- 44:10child and then like moved that mouth. Oh
- 44:12my god. Somebody was telling me about
- 44:13this. It was like he like strapped like
- 44:15a porcelain mouth onto a child and then
- 44:18it like moved it and like
- 44:19ventriloquismed
- 44:21the child.
- 44:23Yeah. It was it was straight up say and
- 44:26they say drag is bad for kids.
- 44:29This I don't I don't even know that this
- 44:31is an art form. It's way worse for kids
- 44:36strapping mouths to them.
- 44:39I I will away weigh in. A necessary
- 44:41disclaimer for the camera. I don't know
- 44:43anything about Joseo the puppet and I
- 44:45don't know if he's bad or good or not.
- 44:47You're never going to work at this time.
- 44:49I just I just remember there is some
- 44:50drama going around the B the Blossom
- 44:53Comedians Facebook group involving a
- 44:55puppet named Hosalito. Duh. Puppet.
- 44:59That's all I'm privy though. Hosito.
- 45:02JDP I think puppet I think puppetry can
- 45:05be done well and funny but
- 45:10yeah concept
- 45:12we're like the biggest muppet adults
- 45:16yeah me and big big puppet heads in I
- 45:20think puppetry can be good in theory and
- 45:21that theory is if you strap a fake mouth
- 45:23to a child
- 45:25and you make him say racially charged
- 45:28things and then whoa this kid somebody
- 45:30beat up this
- 45:32Yeah. Yeah. Arguing with a heckler in
- 45:35the audience with my child puppet.
- 45:39I didn't say that. Yeah. I do like
- 45:41comedian destroys heckler, but the
- 45:42heckler is literally like their puppet.
- 45:46That is great. I do like that.
- 45:50Comedian destroys heckler. It's
- 45:51Statatler and Waldorf.
- 45:53Yeah. Just Yeah. Yeah. Same thought.
- 45:56Yeah. What if like the early Muppets
- 45:58were just like the most slurheavy
- 46:00racially tinged comedy? What do you
- 46:02mean? What if
- 46:04they What's uh do I What's racist about
- 46:06the Muppets other than this the Swedish
- 46:08chef? Have you watched the Muppet Show?
- 46:09There's like a bunch of episodes of the
- 46:10Muppet Show that Disney Plus had to put
- 46:12disclaimers in front of like this was a
- 46:14little racist. Oh, he's like I don't
- 46:16know like Gonzo wearing like a rice
- 46:17patty. Wait, I'll be so honest. I didn't
- 46:19know that. I was just making a joke.
- 46:22But it's awesome to reveal the racism
- 46:23deep within the Muppets. Well, in your
- 46:25joke, you kind of came at me with a lot
- 46:27of heat and I Well, they did like a lot
- 46:30of vaudeville numbers. Yeah. And then
- 46:32there was also Oh, interesting. And so
- 46:34then they would make the puppets. Wait,
- 46:35were the puppets doing like the puppets
- 46:36doing like minstal show stuff? Um,
- 46:38sometimes. Oh, wow. Not not often, but
- 46:42they did not ever do it, unfortunately.
- 46:45It wasn't their main thing. Yeah. It's
- 46:48not easy being
- 46:51And then it's like it's Kermit. It's
- 46:52Kermit. Kermit in the J. in a very
- 46:54specific outfit or a hat or something.
- 46:58He's trying he's trying to make a
- 47:00positive state.
- 47:02He's trying he's it was a outdated form
- 47:05of progressivism. Yeah. Foy's famous uh
- 47:09the jazz man character.
- 47:12He is Billy Crystal. Yeah, he's doing
- 47:14Billy Crystal dusted off after Katrina.
- 47:17You know that they Neil Diamond did the
- 47:19jazz singer like in the 80s. Wait,
- 47:22there's a remake of the jazz. Yeah,
- 47:24there's a remake. Yeah, he does it. Neil
- 47:25Diamond doesn't do black. He does. Wait,
- 47:28does he? Not the whole time. He does it
- 47:30for one number, which is nuts. Well, how
- 47:33often is Al Jolson doing it in the
- 47:35original one? Yeah, I think it's just I
- 47:36think a lot more than a lot.
- 47:39Oh, okay. No, they kind of amped it up
- 47:41in the 80s version where he just plays a
- 47:43black man in the movie.
- 47:46A costume is sort of like a puppet of
- 47:48the self.
- 47:50A costume is sort of like a puppet of
- 47:51the self. You're kind of getting into
- 47:53like if you dress up as like I don't
- 47:56know Big Bird or something. It is.
- 47:57You're literally a puppet. You're
- 47:58puppeting. Well, that's true. Yeah. But
- 48:00then Yeah. Same same goes for if you
- 48:01wear a certain type of racial outfit. I
- 48:03thought Big Bird was a guy. Yeah. Amed
- 48:06the dead. Big was a guy. Amed the dead
- 48:10guy.
- 48:12Yeah. Yeah. He Yeah. He wait. Yeah. Woke
- 48:15Jeff Dunham.
- 48:18This is just a guy I know named Doc Man.
- 48:20He could have been anything before he
- 48:22came.
- 48:24I worked in retail or like but not in a
- 48:27is that a non a nonster I'm trying to
- 48:30figure out like a Yeah. I bet like the
- 48:32gap kind of way like I actually worked
- 48:35at Wet Seal. I was Akmed worked at Wet
- 48:38Seal. What is Wet Seal? Was that you got
- 48:40Oh, no. This is It was like a made by
- 48:42children uh store at the mall. They made
- 48:45advertise that. Oh, they can't advertise
- 48:47it. No, no, it was like it was like Do
- 48:49you know like Charlotte Roose or any It
- 48:51was like [ __ ] kit clothes for
- 48:5313-year-olds. Yeah, that was wet seal
- 48:55and that's how they advertised. Yeah,
- 48:56exactly. I was very off. I thought Wet
- 48:59Seal was like a surfing equipment store.
- 49:02Like it was where you would go to get
- 49:03like a wet suit or something. It's for
- 49:05those Yeah. I think I just made that
- 49:07connection because of the name.
- 49:09I wasn't allowed to shop at Wet Seal. Um
- 49:12or or the mall, which I think shows. I
- 49:16don't know. You weren't allowed to shop.
- 49:17You're not allowed to shop at the mall.
- 49:18I wasn't allowed to go to the I wasn't
- 49:20allowed to go to the mall for a while
- 49:21because of like a safety concern. My mom
- 49:23thought it was dangerous. Yeah. Okay.
- 49:26Probably right. Well, in your mom's
- 49:28defense, I feel like you are a big
- 49:29atrisisk mall teen.
- 49:32That's really true. And you know,
- 49:33instead of going to the mall, I just did
- 49:35ketamine with my friends instead. Yeah.
- 49:38But you could have been doing that with
- 49:39adults.
- 49:42Yeah. Yeah. You could have been doing
- 49:43that in view of the staff at Claire's.
- 49:45Yeah. Were you a mall guy for any me?
- 49:48Yeah. Me? I mean, when I was a teen, I
- 49:51was in Singapore, so it was a little bit
- 49:52of a different vibe. Wait, what? Well,
- 49:55Singapore is kind of a I I might be
- 49:57about to say something incredibly uh
- 49:59insensitive. Singapore is like kind of a
- 50:01big mall, right? I mean, in many ways,
- 50:03it's like extremely safe and there are a
- 50:05lot of shopping centers, so you can kind
- 50:06of go wherever you want. Like a mall,
- 50:08you know how mall is extremely safe?
- 50:11Yeah. I mean, I think we I was allowed
- 50:13to go to the mall by myself because it
- 50:14was like that was kind of like the
- 50:16safest thing I could do. Okay. Um, so
- 50:19yeah, I was a bit of a mall kid, but I
- 50:21it was um you they had really good
- 50:22bubble tea at this place called Ion
- 50:24Orchard in Singapore. My sister and I
- 50:25would take a break from studying and go
- 50:27get bubble tea. That was kind of my
- 50:28break. It's like how when you get like a
- 50:29mango in a country where it's actually
- 50:31grown. Same thing with bubble with
- 50:33bubble tea. You get it. That's where
- 50:34they grow it. If you get bubble tea from
- 50:36an Asian country, I will Yeah, I imagine
- 50:39it is actually better. I was sort of
- 50:40doing a riff and then I was like that's
- 50:41probably true. It is very good. I will
- 50:42say that I think bubble tea is from
- 50:44maybe Taiwan and so don't you dare put
- 50:46that on the internet that it's from
- 50:47Singapore because people will kill I'm
- 50:49not saying it's from Singapore. I'm just
- 50:50saying it's closer to the source. That
- 50:51is true.
- 50:53Um but yes it is very good and I was
- 50:55What is I appreciate you
- 50:58a spell a yogurt. It's a it's a state of
- 51:01mind. Yeah. It's a sin of but I do
- 51:04appreciate you bringing me into the
- 51:05conversation cuz I was once again no
- 51:06doing nonver kind of crap. Can I ask you
- 51:10more questions about Singapore? Yeah.
- 51:12Wait, what what brought you there? Um,
- 51:13well, my my dad was in the hotel
- 51:15industry, which is why I was born in
- 51:16Vegas and I lived there for many years.
- 51:18Yeah, I remember that. Wait, so where
- 51:20did you go to school in Boston? Sorry,
- 51:21I'm jumping around a lot. Oh. Uh, Joe
- 51:23and I both went to Harvard. Wow. You
- 51:26dragged him. I really dragged him. I was
- 51:28like, I'm not doing this alone. Uhoh.
- 51:31National.
- 51:33That's why I've hidden That's why I've
- 51:34hidden their faces behind the mic
- 51:35stands. You'll never get me. They're
- 51:37anonymous. Betty, could you make like an
- 51:39episode? I'm aware that's a faux paw and
- 51:41I'll move the table in the future. I
- 51:42haven't figured out where to put it. But
- 51:43me and Joe are kind of the first
- 51:44sacrifices to Yeah. Betty, can you make
- 51:47like a podcast episode where studies?
- 51:51Try to move it if you like. I was going
- 51:53to say, Betty, can you do like a podcast
- 51:55episode where it's just like people who
- 51:56had 2.0 GPA?
- 51:59You don't know. Well, I did based on
- 52:01based on Joe's vibe. I did. Hey, I I I
- 52:08think I am dumb. I'm just good at
- 52:10school. Like I'm not I'm not smart when
- 52:12it matters. Yeah, I was both. I was uh I
- 52:15was dumb and bad at school. Yeah, I was
- 52:18the more common one, which is being both
- 52:20of those. Yeah, I'm smart, but I was bad
- 52:22at school. I'm sort of That's actually
- 52:25pretty common.
- 52:27I I was thinking the test
- 52:29off the Oh, no. You're a smart person.
- 52:32The school was a bad environment for
- 52:33you. But it's like, man, I I like really
- 52:35tried to be good at it like when I was
- 52:37asked to. And uh No, I I No, I I was
- 52:39also bad at school. I was also dumb at
- 52:41that. [ __ ] yeah, bro. Hell yeah. I just
- 52:43am very bad at putting effort into
- 52:45school. I feel like I don't know. I It's
- 52:47like It's kind of sad. I got like
- 52:49mediocre grades at communication school,
- 52:52you know? Where did you guys Where did
- 52:53you guys go? If not Harvard, by the way,
- 52:55I wasn't not Harvard. Where'd you guys
- 52:58go? I went to Sunni Bingmpington for a
- 53:00year and a half, which is a pretty good
- 53:01school. You went to Yeah. Binghamington.
- 53:03They like math. Yeah, they were like the
- 53:05one school that accepted me because I
- 53:07guess they had like a good essay or
- 53:08something. Hell yeah. You're downplaying
- 53:10it. You are downplaying the hell out of
- 53:12No, I don't. No, I was a bad student and
- 53:14I'm a I was a stupid child and I'm a
- 53:16stupid man. Well, now you're being mean.
- 53:19That child's not you anymore. You just
- 53:21you just insulted some child.
- 53:23Think about the longest time I said to
- 53:26myself, if I got someone who went to
- 53:27Harvard in the same room as me, I'm
- 53:29going to [ __ ] tell them off so bad.
- 53:32I'm going to give them a piece of my
- 53:33[ __ ] Well, you've been in the same
- 53:34room as us thousands of times over the
- 53:35last two years and now you're collaging.
- 53:38Yeah. Okay. I'm just I'm rolling up this
- 53:40AARP magazine.
- 53:44I'm I'm cruising for a bruise.
- 53:47I do have a follow-up question just
- 53:48about the subject of your former selves.
- 53:50Um, do you guys feel like generous
- 53:52towards the version of yourself and the
- 53:54version of standup that you did like
- 53:56many years ago or do you find it cringe
- 53:58or like what's what is your relationship
- 54:00to like the version of you that started
- 54:02standup? I find it pretty cringe. I find
- 54:03it pretty cringe. Yeah.
- 54:06Hey, good question. Uh, Benjamin. Uh, I
- 54:08would I would go with uh cringe and then
- 54:12uh I don't that's I think it was like a
- 54:15switch that flipped in like 2019 where I
- 54:18then like it from then on. Oh,
- 54:19interesting. You know what I mean? I
- 54:21mean, is there any like stand up who's
- 54:22like, I think I did my best work my
- 54:24first year. Does anybody think that?
- 54:27It's really weird. Did you Were you like
- 54:30often build as like Lil Benny or was
- 54:32that just for that?
- 54:35Comedian Benny. Comedian Benny.
- 54:36Comedian. No, no, that was a oneoff
- 54:38show. Um, was that your first year?
- 54:41No, that the comedian No, that was my
- 54:43show. No, no, that was I was a few years
- 54:45into um
- 54:48that would have been funny though. That
- 54:49would have been cool. That would have
- 54:50been a that was the hardest I ever
- 54:52bombed. Yeah, you would have quit
- 54:53probably. Not really.
- 54:57If I if I was brand new, that would have
- 54:58that would have rattled me. Um but no,
- 55:01yeah, I really I cringe at a lot of my
- 55:02early stuff and then yeah, I would
- 55:04deflect that back. I do want to know
- 55:05Donnie, where did you go to school?
- 55:06Where did you Oh, I went to Well, this
- 55:08actually this kind of play I went to
- 55:09Boston University. Um, and because a lot
- 55:13of the when I was in college, we filmed
- 55:15a lot of the standup shows there and I
- 55:17hosted the standup show and so a lot of
- 55:20my first sets are filmed. I can go back
- 55:22to that and really hurt myself.
- 55:26Yeah, it's all
- 55:29I have some like old and I would like
- 55:31[ __ ] incinerate. Oh yeah, I have my
- 55:33high school stand up too. Like really?
- 55:36Nice. You did stand up in high school. I
- 55:38did some at the my yeah my high school
- 55:40poetry club open like I did like a few
- 55:42sets that rocks which like I don't know
- 55:45if footage of those ever if they were
- 55:46filmed and if footage of those ever gets
- 55:48le leaked I'll have to like yeah [ __ ]
- 55:50you'll end it
- 55:53myself
- 55:55hack this man's so then I got I well I
- 55:57was going to say I got two two I'm going
- 55:59to move that the then I'm going to turn
- 56:01to the question of the early stuff for
- 56:02you two and also comma any relationship
- 56:06to the national lampoon
- 56:08Oh yeah.
- 56:10It's different from the national
- 56:11lampoon. Really? Oh, that is true. What?
- 56:13Yeah. Yeah. The National Lampoon makes
- 56:15movies like Straight to Video. Well,
- 56:17they also made the National Was like a
- 56:19spin-off.
- 56:21Oh, gotcha. Yeah. Yeah. They make movies
- 56:23called like The naked mile. Yeah. It's
- 56:26called like Putt Naked and it's about
- 56:27golf or something.
- 56:29Also, Animal House. Uh
- 56:33uh. Well, I did start doing standup in
- 56:38college through like the college standup
- 56:40club. Likewise to D. So, I'm really
- 56:43focused. I have dog [ __ ] fine motor
- 56:45skills. The real focus on that. Oh, I'm
- 56:48glad I'm glad somebody took that guy
- 56:49over. I thought he would be a good This
- 56:52is your captain speak. Adam Sandler
- 56:54woman.
- 56:59Um, but uh yeah, so I also have a lot of
- 57:02footage of me early on that is rough cuz
- 57:05they did film like every set and they
- 57:07really did and I didn't realize that
- 57:09like I thought I was doing like good at
- 57:12standup and then like once I stopped
- 57:14once I like left the standup club I was
- 57:16like oh everyone in the room was already
- 57:18my friend like oh that's why I was doing
- 57:21so good. I need to get a lot better at
- 57:24standup if I want to do anything out and
- 57:27about. But I tried once before the
- 57:31standup club. I did the Middle East open
- 57:34mic. Oh my god. When I was like two I
- 57:36was like Was Rob still hosting it? Yeah.
- 57:38Which was good cuz he was better. Well,
- 57:40I shouldn't do drama. But do you know
- 57:42what year this was? I wonder if we were
- 57:44I'm just trying to like see if we were
- 57:46in the same room at some point before
- 57:48like you. I didn't know that you should
- 57:50go to an open mic early to sign up. So I
- 57:53went like right at when it started and
- 57:56so I didn't go up until like 1:00 in the
- 57:58morning. Oh, sure. And I was doing it
- 58:01for the first time and bad
- 58:04and uh and I bombed so hard I didn't do
- 58:06stand up for like two years. Well, could
- 58:09you in an environment like that, could
- 58:11you even say you bombed? Oh, well, for
- 58:13context, the Middle East is a bar. Yeah.
- 58:17In Boston. I did not bombing. Well, it's
- 58:20like a bar not set up either to h to
- 58:22like hold it open. You know, I I would
- 58:24think that the jokes I did would have
- 58:26bombed in the most gracious of crowds.
- 58:29Like it was I was very not equipped to
- 58:32do what I was doing and then I did it
- 58:34under the worst. Like I did stack the
- 58:37odds against myself, but I was like,
- 58:38"Oh, I'm not cut out for this." Then I
- 58:41waited a while. Sure. And then like
- 58:43someone kind of talked me into going to
- 58:45the club meetings. No, the the way that
- 58:48like open mics work in Boston, it is
- 58:50literally like the reason I am sober
- 58:52right now cuz like you have to you had
- 58:54to like get to a place early to get
- 58:56signed up to get a good spot and you
- 58:57have nothing to do but like drink like
- 59:00while waiting for that. It would like
- 59:02create a horrible drinking habit in me
- 59:04that eventually led to like a six-pack a
- 59:06night like level and eventually I Yeah,
- 59:09I'm sober now. Somebody somebody asked
- 59:10me for comedy advice recently and I've
- 59:13been thinking about this a lot and this
- 59:14is my earnest advice is drink less.
- 59:18Honestly, that's my that's my best
- 59:20advice. I remember it's less now but
- 59:23when I started there was a real like
- 59:24culture of like smoking cigarettes at
- 59:26comedy shows like you would like hang
- 59:27out in the smoker circle outside.
- 59:30Remember like laughing. It's like when a
- 59:32comic like asks you for advice, you
- 59:34can't tell someone to start smoking. But
- 59:37it did help me. I wish I watched like
- 59:39the first episode or two of Mrs. Masel.
- 59:42I didn't really follow it cuz I wasn't
- 59:43really tracking the I don't know. I
- 59:45wasn't really whatever. But I remember
- 59:47there's like a scene. They're doing
- 59:48stand up and then they all go outside
- 59:49and they're stand outside the club and
- 59:51they're smoking and I was like that's
- 59:52the most accurate part of this I've seen
- 59:54so far is the outside hanging circle.
- 59:57Yeah. I don't think people do that
- 59:58anymore. Yeah. I have fiction bar
- 1:00:00people. You know people do that [ __ ]
- 1:00:01You smoke now? Yeah. Yeah. I smoke. I
- 1:00:04smoke but stand stand outside in a
- 1:00:05circle and chat. People do that [ __ ]
- 1:00:07Oh, well yeah. So I I No, not
- 1:00:09necessarily smoke, but yeah, you smoke.
- 1:00:10Yeah, it used to be more of a thing
- 1:00:11though. I don't know. Like it used to be
- 1:00:13way more prevalent. I think it depends
- 1:00:14on the space and if they're hanging
- 1:00:16inside. Like if you go to I think
- 1:00:17cigarettes are just expensive now
- 1:00:19though. Well, I'm not I'm not totally
- 1:00:21smoking. Absolutely. But I but it the I
- 1:00:24wasn't ever smoking. I was just doing
- 1:00:25the thing of standing in the the circle
- 1:00:27hang outside the bar. I was I was such a
- 1:00:30[ __ ] with smoking. I couldn't I Chris
- 1:00:34was bad at it, but I wanted to hang out
- 1:00:36with the cool guy. That's why that's why
- 1:00:38I don't understand. That's like uh That
- 1:00:40is like so funny cuz like I don't smoke
- 1:00:42anymore, but the habit to leave a room
- 1:00:44every what for five minutes like every
- 1:00:46hour with you. No, literally cuz I am
- 1:00:49like a restless person by nature and and
- 1:00:53like I can't I don't smoke. So now I
- 1:00:55just need to tell people like Yeah, I'll
- 1:00:56be back in like however long a rush song
- 1:00:58is.
- 1:01:00That is like I keep trying to quit but I
- 1:01:02need to leave a room and then I'm like,
- 1:01:04"Oh, okay. I need something to do." Bro,
- 1:01:05you could just like pace around the
- 1:01:07block like a maniac. That's what I do.
- 1:01:09Yeah, that would be better. This is sort
- 1:01:12of the conversation. A circle outside
- 1:01:14the bar, dude. But I really think the
- 1:01:16new thing is going to be collage circles
- 1:01:17outside of comedy shows. I think that
- 1:01:20like the circle outside the bar is the
- 1:01:23point of doing comedy. I love chatting
- 1:01:25and love the communal aspect. That's why
- 1:01:27I never understood why people go to a
- 1:01:30show, do their set, duck out without
- 1:01:32hanging or anything. Uh especially at
- 1:01:34the like start like it like what are you
- 1:01:38doing? Although I will say that that was
- 1:01:39something that always intimidated me
- 1:01:41about comedy is I like everyone said
- 1:01:43that it was about the hang and I was
- 1:01:44kind of like oh but I'm I'm tired and I
- 1:01:46like like the hang and I love everybody
- 1:01:48but I'm scared of you or like it was
- 1:01:50kind of a scary environment to be like I
- 1:01:52don't know anyone I'm going to like
- 1:01:53stand in this circle with sometimes
- 1:01:55people who are like smoking and I don't
- 1:01:56smoke or like I think I that made it was
- 1:01:58a little bit of a barrier to me in the
- 1:01:59beginning because I was scared about the
- 1:02:01like okay how much of this is genuinely
- 1:02:03about making friends. Were you like an
- 1:02:05outgoing like kid or something? Kind I
- 1:02:07randomly started comedy when I was like
- 1:02:0911. Um yeah, in Singapore. Wait, what?
- 1:02:13How does that work? What? Yeah, just cuz
- 1:02:16like uh it was like the scene. Yeah, the
- 1:02:18scene in Singapore. Now I think it's
- 1:02:20probably great. Um lot of spitting.
- 1:02:24Exactly. Um but yeah, I started when I
- 1:02:26was in like middle school randomly and
- 1:02:28uh cuz there was like a comedy
- 1:02:29competition at school and I was the only
- 1:02:30one that signed up. So I like started
- 1:02:32doing stand up at assemblies and it was
- 1:02:33really bad but it was like adorable and
- 1:02:34every time I would do a set it was like
- 1:02:36an entirely new five minutes in front of
- 1:02:38like my 900 person middle school and
- 1:02:41then I would like throw that five
- 1:02:42minutes away and like write a new five
- 1:02:43minutes for the next time and that's
- 1:02:46kind of me in high school. That's right.
- 1:02:47Yeah. It's like it's a terrible way to
- 1:02:49do comedy and ultimately I had to
- 1:02:51unlearn so much of the stuff that I was
- 1:02:52doing back then. But when I I branched
- 1:02:54out into like the Singapore local scene
- 1:02:56when I was like 15 or so and they were
- 1:02:58very nice to me, but it was a very
- 1:02:59intimidating thing to be like, "Oh my
- 1:03:01god, there are all these comics who know
- 1:03:02each other and I don't really know what
- 1:03:03to do." Was there like an expat like
- 1:03:04Singapore comedy scene? There's I It was
- 1:03:06more of like a local scene, I will say.
- 1:03:09I don't think there were I mean, there
- 1:03:10were some expats. I'm sure now it's a
- 1:03:12lot bigger. Um Well, was it the English
- 1:03:14language? Yes. Yeah, it was there there
- 1:03:16I'm sure was also like a Chinese
- 1:03:17language scene. the first n the first
- 1:03:20language in Singapore is English just
- 1:03:22because they were a British colony. So
- 1:03:23that was like kind of prevalent. But
- 1:03:25there were people that were there were a
- 1:03:26lot of like very specific local jokes
- 1:03:28like there would be a lot of like Malay
- 1:03:29comedians for example who would make
- 1:03:31very specific references to like
- 1:03:32Malaysia Singapore kind of differences
- 1:03:34and that would really go over well. But
- 1:03:36I do remember being really intimidated
- 1:03:37by the like conversations people would
- 1:03:39have after or the expectation that you
- 1:03:41should be also like friends with
- 1:03:42everyone. It it does kind of like
- 1:03:43consistently amaze me that like there
- 1:03:46isn't like there isn't like a version of
- 1:03:48standup comedy that like outside of the
- 1:03:51English language that are like as
- 1:03:52popular as English language standup
- 1:03:54comedy. You would think it would be like
- 1:03:56popular in all cultures cuz it's so like
- 1:03:58basic and elemental and art form. I
- 1:04:00guess it's just a person talking to a
- 1:04:01microphone in front of a crowd. But it's
- 1:04:03like I think weirdly there are I think
- 1:04:05we just aren't privy to it. Like I think
- 1:04:07there are some comics I they are now but
- 1:04:10like you you would expect there would be
- 1:04:11like a tradition of it going back like
- 1:04:13thousands of years or something like
- 1:04:15that. It's not it's not even that old in
- 1:04:17in English. It's like what like they did
- 1:04:19it in the '9s by but
- 1:04:23it was invented in what like 2010. How
- 1:04:25old is Louis?
- 1:04:28But it but it was lit like literally
- 1:04:30invented in what like the late 1800
- 1:04:32early 1900s like Mark Twain would do
- 1:04:34like these like long lecture or like
- 1:04:36there's like this British form and also
- 1:04:38Mark Twain and then like vaudeville and
- 1:04:40all kind of coalesed in this way where
- 1:04:42once like once you had like radio people
- 1:04:45started having to do like their own
- 1:04:47material cuz before that everybody was
- 1:04:49like kind of sharing stuff all road
- 1:04:51jokes. It was all it was all road jokes
- 1:04:53because people wouldn't know that you
- 1:04:54were sharing material. Yeah. And then
- 1:04:56once once recording and like public
- 1:04:58broadcasting became a thing, ownership
- 1:05:00of material became like a you know what
- 1:05:02I mean? Well, don't people say like Bob
- 1:05:03Hope was the first standup comedian in
- 1:05:05like the modern sense? Like I don't
- 1:05:07know. That's I could see that. This is
- 1:05:09like the lamest thing to know a lot
- 1:05:10about. I mean I don't know, man. It's I
- 1:05:12think it's so cool.
- 1:05:14It feels kind of derivative of like you
- 1:05:16know you know like back back in the day
- 1:05:17like traveling players like the chest
- 1:05:20the who could tell the king the bad news
- 1:05:22in town. Yeah. Speaking of it being lame
- 1:05:25because I am because I am serious. Uh
- 1:05:27I'm curious about what do you think the
- 1:05:29current vibe is of standup
- 1:05:35aesthet?
- 1:05:37Yeah. Aesthetically. What do people
- 1:05:38think of it? What do you guys Uh I think
- 1:05:40it's kind of it I think it's kind of
- 1:05:42like seen as it was for a while seen as
- 1:05:44generally lame. I feel like but I don't
- 1:05:46know I people who go to it go to a good
- 1:05:49show enjoy it. I don't know maybe that
- 1:05:51seems dumb to point out but like I
- 1:05:53everybody I meet a lot of people who
- 1:05:55like go to standup and I'm kind of like
- 1:05:56surprised by how much they enjoy going
- 1:05:58to a good show. Yeah because I don't I
- 1:06:01think the conception is that comedians
- 1:06:02are kind of tryh hard and that's the
- 1:06:05least cool thing you can be now. I
- 1:06:06wonder if it's because like if you go to
- 1:06:08see if you go to see like a good
- 1:06:09concert, it'll be great. Like it'll be
- 1:06:11good music hopefully. Yeah. But there's
- 1:06:13so much standup on the internet and
- 1:06:15there's so much like you can just post
- 1:06:17you playing guitar in your bedroom. And
- 1:06:18I think people think that like Well,
- 1:06:20yeah. Well, culturally there's like the
- 1:06:22Rogan of it all, which is like bad PR
- 1:06:24for stand. And on top of that, it's just
- 1:06:26it's a it's impossible to do this and
- 1:06:30seem cool and over it and like you don't
- 1:06:32care. Yeah, you can play music and seem
- 1:06:34like you don't care. That's impossible
- 1:06:35to stand up. It's like a [ __ ] a guy.
- 1:06:37Can you imagine being like a puppeteer
- 1:06:39and trying to come off like you don't
- 1:06:40care what the audience thinks of you?
- 1:06:42You went through the effort to like put
- 1:06:44that fake mouth on that child's face. Of
- 1:06:46course you care. Kermit on Rogan.
- 1:06:52I just feel like
- 1:06:54I've been doing my own research.
- 1:06:57Yeah, that basically that basically is
- 1:06:59Jordan Peters. It's like the joke about
- 1:07:01this chimp.
- 1:07:03Yeah. Gender critical Kermit.
- 1:07:06Who know? It's not being green is
- 1:07:09difficult.
- 1:07:10We have it harder than the white. Sorry.
- 1:07:13I don't know. I don't Anyway, that's
- 1:07:14actually No, he he Kermit Don Ro would
- 1:07:17be like, "Actually, white men have it
- 1:07:18harder than
- 1:07:21Kermit would be like the thing about
- 1:07:22trans women in sports."
- 1:07:25I don't know what Gonzo is that he needs
- 1:07:27to tell me.
- 1:07:30I want an inspection.
- 1:07:33Transopig go.
- 1:07:36I do think there's like an interesting
- 1:07:37trend within standup where it's kind of
- 1:07:40in a way that's maybe reflective of the
- 1:07:41country. It's it's been kind of split
- 1:07:44into camps of I think the people who
- 1:07:46think that comedy is getting too soft or
- 1:07:47people are too sensitive and then are
- 1:07:49going like in an alt-right direction and
- 1:07:51that side is becoming extremely insular.
- 1:07:53And then I think there's also like kind
- 1:07:55of a fun queer like alt scene or um
- 1:07:57people who uh maybe think that standup
- 1:08:00is not just about like saying the most
- 1:08:02offensive thing you can think of. And I
- 1:08:03feel like uh the audiences like aren't
- 1:08:06crossing over in the way that they used
- 1:08:07to. Like it feels like there are fewer
- 1:08:09universally beloved comics. It's more
- 1:08:11like everyone has their segmented
- 1:08:13audience depending on like where they
- 1:08:14fall politically or like the obviously
- 1:08:16the type of stuff they talk about. But I
- 1:08:18don't know. That's kind of a hot take.
- 1:08:19Well, I don't think there's like a not
- 1:08:21like that. Growing up, I think we all
- 1:08:23grew up with like Comedy Central would
- 1:08:26have like the or like HBO would have
- 1:08:28like the big new special
- 1:08:31where do you turn and now everyone just
- 1:08:33kind of self- selects what they watch.
- 1:08:35So, I think people don't I remember it's
- 1:08:37like a big gripe with a lot of standup
- 1:08:38comedians that like you know lay men
- 1:08:40like people who don't do comedy believe
- 1:08:42that there's only one genre of comedy
- 1:08:44and it is comedy. I remember that would
- 1:08:45like stick in the crowd of a lot of
- 1:08:46comedians. I think there's more of like
- 1:08:48an understanding of that these days cuz
- 1:08:51it is like very easy to like silo
- 1:08:53yourself off. Not saying that's a good
- 1:08:55or bad thing and just only enjoy the
- 1:08:57kind of like comedy that you Sorry. I'm
- 1:09:01I'm terribly sorry to briefly derail,
- 1:09:02but Freddy, I know you have a heart out
- 1:09:04at 8:30. Oh, yes. Is that right? It is
- 1:09:06about to be 8:30. Oh my gosh, time
- 1:09:08flies. Yeah. Can I super quick read this
- 1:09:10uh Rod Stewart quote from AP magazine?
- 1:09:13Oh, yeah. Go ahead. Yeah. Okay. Uh Rod
- 1:09:15Stewart, I was also going to say we can
- 1:09:17Freddy is We might keep going for No,
- 1:09:19please please do in my absence. Yeah,
- 1:09:21I'm sorry that I have We'll put your
- 1:09:22collies like Yeah, feel free to You're
- 1:09:26welcome to actually just guess anything
- 1:09:27you would like to about what I would
- 1:09:29say. Yeah. Pretty puppet. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:09:32Yeah, we could just keep like a still
- 1:09:35image of them.
- 1:09:38Can Can I present before I leave? Oh,
- 1:09:39that's sick as hell. And then we'll do
- 1:09:41the last quote. Don't you worry. This is
- 1:09:43my collage. It's a um it's uh the four
- 1:09:46people from uh 80 for Brady and the
- 1:09:48subheading is the Atlanta Falcons,
- 1:09:50Masters of Duplicity. And then um this
- 1:09:53was like a a Curtis Hunson or something
- 1:09:56painting and I made it say Teresa is
- 1:09:58[ __ ] Um and then it's the woman walking
- 1:10:00her husband and someone standing in a
- 1:10:03painting and then there's a little bit
- 1:10:05of a pipe cleaner situation. That's just
- 1:10:06for the audio listeners. That's a truly
- 1:10:08beautiful object. Thank you. I would
- 1:10:10like to say you are welcome. You're
- 1:10:12welcome to take that with you and show
- 1:10:14it to the camera on the way. Oh, yeah.
- 1:10:15Yeah, I will. Genuinely. And I will. By
- 1:10:17the way, this podcast goes on forever
- 1:10:19until each of you chooses to drop out.
- 1:10:22That's like the long walk.
- 1:10:24Vampire
- 1:10:26invited to leave.
- 1:10:29Where where are you off to? Oh, I um I'm
- 1:10:32making a web series with Tessel. Oh,
- 1:10:34shout out Tessel. Shout out Tessel.
- 1:10:36Former guest of the pod. Yes. Yes. Yes.
- 1:10:38Yes. And we are editing it tonight with
- 1:10:39our director Mabel over in Park Loop.
- 1:10:41Oh, cool. So, unfortunately, I must go.
- 1:10:43We'll have a great time. Lovely. Thank
- 1:10:44you. Can't wait to see you. Yeah, for
- 1:10:47sure. For sure. Can't wait to put it
- 1:10:48out. Sorry, Joe. Sorry, sir. I've wanted
- 1:10:50to sit in Joe's lap all night and
- 1:10:54look at
- 1:10:56I'll do a brief show and tell to the
- 1:10:57camera. Hell yeah. Yeah. Hell yeah. For
- 1:11:02Brady, thank you for Would you like any
- 1:11:04of the magazines back then? They're kind
- 1:11:06of destroyed form. Are my roommates? I
- 1:11:08might take the ones that are really nice
- 1:11:11if that is
- 1:11:14woman.
- 1:11:16Thank you so much. Thanks for coming.
- 1:11:18Yeah, good to see you. Sorry Freddy had
- 1:11:20to leave. Sorry you couldn't see
- 1:11:21Freddy's face for the whole damn time.
- 1:11:24This is what I looked like. Yeah, even
- 1:11:26show. That's funny. This is what I
- 1:11:29looked like. He's like right behind
- 1:11:31disembodied voice. I'm going to be this
- 1:11:33audio from Rod Stewart and the AP. Yes.
- 1:11:37I need Do you think I'm sexy? Was like a
- 1:11:40pink toilet seat around my neck.
- 1:11:44Um,
- 1:11:47in Britain that means albatross.
- 1:11:51You know that readily recognizable
- 1:11:53metaphor? A pink toilet seat. Toilet
- 1:11:55seat around my neck. And then my wife's
- 1:11:57the ball in trade.
- 1:12:00Yeah. Why? I I'm just trying to like
- 1:12:01specify like pink. Is pink supposed to
- 1:12:04denote tacky? It's even tackier than a
- 1:12:06regular factory grade toilet seat. It's
- 1:12:09It's strange to have a toilet seat
- 1:12:10around your neck in general. Sure, of
- 1:12:12course. One would think. No
- 1:12:13disagreement. Just throwing up. And it
- 1:12:15was still like, what are you not putting
- 1:12:17the seat up? You know what I mean? Put
- 1:12:19the seat up. Wait, it's pink. I can't
- 1:12:21touch it.
- 1:12:23Turn me.
- 1:12:25I don't mean to derail. I did mean to
- 1:12:27derail because I had to free Freddy.
- 1:12:30Hashtag free.
- 1:12:32We respect we Freddy needs to be
- 1:12:35released. Um but uh but right before
- 1:12:38that we were cooking and I and I I do I
- 1:12:42do want to see if we can tap right back
- 1:12:43in. You were about to say something. I
- 1:12:44had I derailed. I have no sure. Now that
- 1:12:47we're now we're in a Bughive after dark.
- 1:12:51Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. This is an old swim of
- 1:12:53Bug. That was Cartoon Network. Now that
- 1:12:55Freddy's gone, we can say how we really
- 1:12:57[ __ ] feel. Yeah. We're talking about
- 1:13:01like how comedy's gotten like a little
- 1:13:03or comedy fandom has gotten a little
- 1:13:06more silent. Oh yeah, comedy is still
- 1:13:08pretty broad which is cool. I think
- 1:13:10there's still like a lot of different
- 1:13:13scenes, a lot of different kinds of
- 1:13:14comedy. So you're saying there's no
- 1:13:16universal.
- 1:13:18Wow. I really no one like
- 1:13:23I feel like
- 1:13:25I Betty if you're implying the vibes are
- 1:13:27off. I don't feel that way. Oh, no, no,
- 1:13:28no. Just just that uh I'm there's a
- 1:13:31brief just a there's it's
- 1:13:35got to reconnect, gentlemen. Yeah. No,
- 1:13:37we got just we just got to get on a good
- 1:13:38jag again. Yeah. I'm going to clean it
- 1:13:41up. Hey, would you like any this, by the
- 1:13:43way, uh, basically, okay, here's here's
- 1:13:45the situation is that Michael Candell
- 1:13:48came on and made a a beautiful thing,
- 1:13:50but it was like kind of like this pipe
- 1:13:52cleaner thing of like a guy uh doggy
- 1:13:55style [ __ ] It was like two people who
- 1:13:57were very clearly [ __ ] doggy style.
- 1:13:59You could do that. Oh my god. Oh, with
- 1:14:01with pipe cleaners. It was quite
- 1:14:02amazing. However, I didn't know where to
- 1:14:05put it or what to do with it, and it was
- 1:14:06huge and in the way, so I ended up uh
- 1:14:09You deconstructed it.
- 1:14:11Oh, is that is that all from the one
- 1:14:14pipe cleaner paint? That actually might
- 1:14:15not be true. There's so many pipe
- 1:14:16cleaners just for two people [ __ ]
- 1:14:18doggy stuff. You know, that literally I
- 1:14:20now I look at these, I think that's
- 1:14:21actually not true. I think that these
- 1:14:22were a different object. Whoa. Oh,
- 1:14:24that's nice. This is the sperm for the
- 1:14:26doggy stuff. Big sperm. Yeah, we had we
- 1:14:29had a my my at the school I work at, the
- 1:14:33kids were doing like electives of like
- 1:14:36they've been like trying out different
- 1:14:37electives and they had like They had
- 1:14:41they had they had drawing slashcreative
- 1:14:44writing as the elective they tried to
- 1:14:46do. So I had one of my kids who he's
- 1:14:49like a 19-year-old guy with uh autism
- 1:14:52and he uh was like I I know what I'm
- 1:14:55going to do. I know what I'm going to
- 1:14:56do. He just he just drew a penis and
- 1:14:58then wrote dick in a butt in case in
- 1:15:01case you weren't sure what it because I
- 1:15:03want to write it down because this is a
- 1:15:04thing I say sometimes.
- 1:15:05[Laughter]
- 1:15:08Thanks for clearing that up. Okay, so
- 1:15:10what I did with this is I mashed it into
- 1:15:11a ball. However, in this moment, I'm
- 1:15:14very curious to see if it will unfurl
- 1:15:16appropriately to the to the to the two
- 1:15:19to the two folks [ __ ] doggy style. I
- 1:15:22have to do it carefully so I don't break
- 1:15:24into the object. But honestly, so far, I
- 1:15:27think it's working. There's basically
- 1:15:29like a platform. You can think that if
- 1:15:30you want.
- 1:15:33You don't think? How do you do, Doug?
- 1:15:36Wait, wait.
- 1:15:39Feel free. Oh, wait. Okay. Oh, we're
- 1:15:41getting close. Oh my god. We can We can
- 1:15:44Oh my god. I think we're going to get
- 1:15:45it. This is Oh, wow. Oh, wow. Okay, I
- 1:15:49got the one. Okay, this kind of looks
- 1:15:51like like a Junjiito illustration of two
- 1:15:54people [ __ ]
- 1:15:56just absolute horror chaos. Now, now
- 1:16:00explain that reference for people. Is
- 1:16:02that the spiral lines? Like, yeah. Ito
- 1:16:05is a Japanese manga artist. Horror
- 1:16:08artist. Horror mangaka.
- 1:16:12He makes creepy pictures. Yeah. Joe,
- 1:16:14look at me. Look at me, Joe. He's a
- 1:16:16horror manga. Yeah. Famous for Guio. Uh
- 1:16:19Uzumaki.
- 1:16:22Tommy. That is very good. That is He
- 1:16:25does have a really good version of I've
- 1:16:27been reading this book. Speaking of
- 1:16:28depressing things, I've been reading
- 1:16:30this book called No Longer Human. Do you
- 1:16:32guys know that book? No, I don't know
- 1:16:33this. Oh, it's just a book about a guy
- 1:16:35that just keeps trying to kill himself
- 1:16:36and keeps failing. Oh boy. This is good
- 1:16:39for the pod. This is a book. This is a
- 1:16:41book. A novel. It's actually
- 1:16:43semi-autobiographical about the the
- 1:16:46author. Oh, interesting. Try to kill
- 1:16:49himself and it doesn't work. Yeah. And
- 1:16:50then he kills himself. And the author or
- 1:16:52the guy in the book? The author. Okay.
- 1:16:54Yeah. Well, that's nice. Wait, no, the
- 1:16:57author. Oh, that's bad. That's very sad.
- 1:16:59I thought this was this would be good um
- 1:17:01talk while while uh The doggy styles
- 1:17:04unfurled.
- 1:17:06I haven't quite gotten it all the way,
- 1:17:07but this is the top person with the eyes
- 1:17:10up here. The eyes are up here. Uh
- 1:17:14they're kind of holding on to the back
- 1:17:15of this other person's head. Oh,
- 1:17:21okay. And they're kind It's hard to It
- 1:17:24seems like the bottom person is kind of
- 1:17:27been shattered from the waist down. Does
- 1:17:30that not happen to you, Joe? They were
- 1:17:32connected at the hip. If you showed that
- 1:17:34to a hundred people, 100 people would
- 1:17:35say that's doggy style. Family feud.
- 1:17:39We showed a mashed up pipe cleaner. 100
- 1:17:43married. I would say it's not doggy
- 1:17:45style. And Steve Harvey would give me
- 1:17:46that famous face. People's like, "What
- 1:17:49the hell?" You guys ready? It's getting
- 1:17:51mashed back into
- 1:17:55That's what I want to do when I see two
- 1:17:56people having sex before marriage. This
- 1:17:59is a great This is the abstract concept
- 1:18:01of doggy style mashed together. Like
- 1:18:04this is if you could hold in your hand
- 1:18:07doggy style. If if Yeah, you've heard of
- 1:18:1069. This is point0000001.
- 1:18:15An infantestimally small point in space
- 1:18:18of two people [ __ ] Hey. Hey
- 1:18:20everybody. Just like uh just like Joe, I
- 1:18:22also got married.
- 1:18:24Hey, look at my look at my [ __ ] hand.
- 1:18:26There we go. Got to put some pipe
- 1:18:28cleaner around my This guy's married to
- 1:18:30the bit. Yeah, married to the bed. Yeah,
- 1:18:32let's make puppets, shall we? Yes. Do we
- 1:18:35have the ability to [ __ ] it? Do we have
- 1:18:37any uh bags? Oh,
- 1:18:41wow. What's this guy's name? I'm the
- 1:18:43Boston comedy scene.
- 1:18:47I'm going to make Rogan Kermit like we
- 1:18:49talked about. We have like Ker make
- 1:18:51Kermit who's extremely concerned about
- 1:18:53the sanctity of women's mixed martial
- 1:18:54arts.
- 1:18:58It's It's like Miss Piggy.
- 1:19:00[Music]
- 1:19:05He's wor He's Yeah, he's worried that
- 1:19:06she'll be I'm in a bad headsp space
- 1:19:08right now. I was watching like a lot of
- 1:19:09YouTube documentaries about mixed
- 1:19:11martial arts. I've just been every
- 1:19:13everybody I walk down the street, I just
- 1:19:15want you just to take them down. Did you
- 1:19:17ever do a martial art? I feel like white
- 1:19:20guy in the suburbs of Boston. No, I did
- 1:19:22not. No, I never did that. That is
- 1:19:25surprising actually. Oh, that's very
- 1:19:27sweet that you guys think I uh I don't
- 1:19:29know. I'm an athlete like that. Yeah. Or
- 1:19:31like at least at one point. No, never. I
- 1:19:33I did like karate in grade school.
- 1:19:35That's That is exactly when I pinned
- 1:19:37you. Oh, okay. Oh, yeah. I thought you
- 1:19:39did. Oh, I thought you were describing
- 1:19:41me as like a midlife crisis jiu-jitsu
- 1:19:43guy. That's like what like we like the
- 1:19:47suburbs of Boston. You did karate? Yeah.
- 1:19:50Did you do karate? I did jiu-jitsu cuz I
- 1:19:53was worried about getting hit. You did
- 1:19:54child Wait, did you do child jiu-jitsu?
- 1:19:57Yeah, I have a jun I have a junior black
- 1:19:59belt. I didn't even know that existed.
- 1:20:01Junior black belt. Yeah, they're letting
- 1:20:03they're letting children be divorced
- 1:20:04now.
- 1:20:06I I assumed I'd be bullied, so I wanted
- 1:20:09to defend myself, but I didn't. I
- 1:20:10assumed I didn't want to get hit, so I
- 1:20:14did the I did the one that was more
- 1:20:16grapple based. Preemptive striking a
- 1:20:18bully is funny. Yeah, I I was afraid of
- 1:20:20being bullied, so I did the most
- 1:20:21homoeronic martial arts. And then it's
- 1:20:24just like the it's a contest. See who
- 1:20:26can sit on another guy first.
- 1:20:29It it was eye opening.
- 1:20:32But then I would also I was so short
- 1:20:34like I was like 12 or 13 but then I
- 1:20:37would have I would I was only like
- 1:20:38allowed to spar with the one
- 1:20:40eight-year-old girl cuz we were the only
- 1:20:42ones that were the same height and it
- 1:20:44would have been too mean for her to have
- 1:20:45to spar someone else. I was going to say
- 1:20:47we can't let Joe Rogan hear about that.
- 1:20:50He's going to get like men are
- 1:20:52infiltrating women's children's mixed
- 1:20:54martial arts. No, I didn't I didn't want
- 1:20:56to. And then like but like everyone else
- 1:20:58was too big and she still cried every
- 1:21:01time I grappled her. Wow. Because it was
- 1:21:05she was too I I think like the
- 1:21:07eight-year-olds are probably too young
- 1:21:08for jiu-jitsu.
- 1:21:10At least intrusive question. How old are
- 1:21:13you? 30. Okay. I wasn't at the time of
- 1:21:16grappling. Yeah, I wasn't implying. I
- 1:21:19was just like trying to like Yeah. I'm
- 1:21:21just trying to like chart in my head. I
- 1:21:22was like, was jiu-jitsu really like that
- 1:21:24popular when you were a child? They were
- 1:21:25having so strange. Like close in age.
- 1:21:30Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It wasn't
- 1:21:32like I don't I think it was like
- 1:21:34definitely less popular than karate.
- 1:21:36Like karate was like the thing to do,
- 1:21:39right? But well, yeah, karate is just
- 1:21:42like the generic like Xerox brand of
- 1:21:45like martial arts if you live in the
- 1:21:46suburbs. I think it's so funny that
- 1:21:48there's like strip malls where it'll be
- 1:21:50like candles and then like like Chinese
- 1:21:54food and then like karate. You can like
- 1:21:56you can go to the store and purchase the
- 1:21:58ancient knowledge.
- 1:22:02Yeah. So awesome. Yeah. This is a small
- 1:22:05town pizzery and this where you teach a
- 1:22:07child to kill.
- 1:22:10That is exactly Yeah. We used to pick my
- 1:22:12brother up from karate and go to the
- 1:22:14grossest pizza place in the entire town
- 1:22:16directly next door. Are you Are you
- 1:22:18Where are you from? I'm from South
- 1:22:20Jersey. So yeah, I'm from Cherry Hill.
- 1:22:22Oh, yeah. Yeah. Okay. Oh, they don't
- 1:22:24have good uh pizza places in South
- 1:22:26Jersey. Yeah. No, it's pretty mediocre.
- 1:22:28Oh, that's so sad to hear. Yeah, I did.
- 1:22:30I used to go to this place. Uh is that
- 1:22:32where the Pine Barons are? I should know
- 1:22:34this. That's in South Jersey, but not
- 1:22:36further further out towards the Gotcha.
- 1:22:38I should know that. But not Why should
- 1:22:40you know that? What did you do? I don't
- 1:22:41know. It's like close enough to me that
- 1:22:43I should know where things are in New
- 1:22:45Jersey. It speaks to a general like
- 1:22:47naive that I don't know that. Wow. You
- 1:22:49think I think you think people are a lot
- 1:22:51more educated about Jersey than they I
- 1:22:53feel I should be. Guy who comes on a
- 1:22:55podcast running his damn mouth about the
- 1:22:57different forms of martial arts. He
- 1:22:59should have a generalized knowledge of
- 1:23:00what is and isn't. You try [ __ ] talking
- 1:23:02jiu-jitsu with the Pine Barons, buddy.
- 1:23:04You see what happens.
- 1:23:07Yeah. You're going to get suplexed to
- 1:23:09[ __ ]
- 1:23:11Yeah. Well, it's nice you hold me to a
- 1:23:13lower standard than I. Maybe you'll
- 1:23:15agree with this, Da. The pizza in
- 1:23:17Philly, I would say, is on par with New
- 1:23:21York, if not consistently better on
- 1:23:23average. I do not understand the hype
- 1:23:25about pizza here. Are we talking about
- 1:23:27this? Well, firstly, who cares? Who
- 1:23:30cares about New York? Not like related
- 1:23:33to this conversation, but like what a
- 1:23:34dumb Shut the [ __ ] up. But what a dumb
- 1:23:36food to have a national pride. That's
- 1:23:38one thing I've always admired about
- 1:23:39Boston. We're We don't have a food we're
- 1:23:41annoying about. Roll clam chowder. No,
- 1:23:44they don't really care about that
- 1:23:46though. Clam chowder is just other
- 1:23:48people trying to like prescribe a food
- 1:23:50to Boston. I don't need know a lot of
- 1:23:51people from Boston actually give a [ __ ]
- 1:23:53about like Yeah. Lobster or whatever. We
- 1:23:55give a [ __ ] about Dunkin D. We give a
- 1:23:57[ __ ] about like gas station coffee which
- 1:23:59like we do Cumies. Cumbies. Well, like
- 1:24:01that's the thing. Wawa. That's the
- 1:24:03That's the thing though. Like Waw Wa.
- 1:24:04Oh. Yeah. We don't like like Dunkin'
- 1:24:08Donuts of food though. We like it like
- 1:24:09we like a sports team. We're just
- 1:24:11rooting for a brand. Yeah. Which I
- 1:24:13respect and I like. I hate when I hate
- 1:24:15people who are annoying about a food
- 1:24:16that you should actually care about.
- 1:24:19Okay. So, pizza. What else? What else
- 1:24:20qualifi? Like do you think like Chicago
- 1:24:22hot dogs is like the same Oh my god.
- 1:24:26Jesus Christ. Well, they're just
- 1:24:28annoying about everything over there.
- 1:24:29That's a really weird thing. You
- 1:24:31ketchup. You got Chicago beef. Yeah. I
- 1:24:33don't I don't I like Chicago just fine.
- 1:24:35I think I I just think they have a a
- 1:24:37ridiculously like oversized sense of
- 1:24:40importance about themselves. Yeah. I
- 1:24:42think the Chicago lobby is way too
- 1:24:44powerful. The cultural Chicago lobby. I
- 1:24:47I as a regular person asked to care
- 1:24:49about Chicago far more than I should be.
- 1:24:52Yeah. They call their [ __ ] comedy
- 1:24:54theater the second city, which is
- 1:24:56ridiculous that you guys even think that
- 1:24:59you qual you're lucky to qualify as the
- 1:25:01third city. Maybe.
- 1:25:03Yeah. Yeah. I would say they're the
- 1:25:06third city in terms of population size.
- 1:25:08I think I think it's like just cultural
- 1:25:10reach. I think they're the third city.
- 1:25:12Mhm. Yeah. Which I think is inherent
- 1:25:14with population. Yeah. Which is great.
- 1:25:16You guys should be perfectly happy with
- 1:25:18that. Well, if it was inherent with
- 1:25:19population, then I feel like Oh, well,
- 1:25:21that's densely populated. Never mind.
- 1:25:23Because then wouldn't like the most
- 1:25:24populous state be have more of an
- 1:25:26influence on like American culture?
- 1:25:28Yeah. You know, but what is the most
- 1:25:29populist? Like New Jersey is the most
- 1:25:31densely populated California. Never
- 1:25:33mind. All right, cool. Yeah, I guess
- 1:25:35that does kind of work. Are we only
- 1:25:37gamers in here right now? Only gamers.
- 1:25:39Like a safe space. I go safety off. All
- 1:25:42right. Uh, so the Resident Evil games
- 1:25:44are supposed to take place in Chicago.
- 1:25:46That's like Raccoon City. Yeah, Raccoon
- 1:25:48City is supposed to be Chicago. And I've
- 1:25:50always like had like a funny joke in my
- 1:25:52head where just like Resident Evil stuff
- 1:25:53is like regional Chicago stuff. Like
- 1:25:56your like [ __ ] Midwestern cousin is
- 1:25:58like, "Hey, whoa, buddy. Where's your
- 1:25:59jewel puzzle?
- 1:26:02That's it. Walking around with tank
- 1:26:03controls in Chicago.
- 1:26:06Save the civilian. Oh no, they have
- 1:26:08ketchup on their dog. Kill them.
- 1:26:12That's it. Benny, do you like horror
- 1:26:15games? Uh, I haven't really played any.
- 1:26:17I don't think I know or like what what
- 1:26:20is your relation? I've been talking
- 1:26:21about this with more people recently. A
- 1:26:23lot more people than I realize hate
- 1:26:24horror. Really? Yeah. My first kiss is
- 1:26:27House of the Dead. Your first kiss was
- 1:26:29in the film Uve B's house. No, in like
- 1:26:32the arcade game house that Oh, that's
- 1:26:35like a joke kind of like what if we made
- 1:26:37out in the blank.
- 1:26:40What if we made out in the Sega the Lost
- 1:26:41World arcade? I feel like I was pretty
- 1:26:43much kissed as a joke, too, but it still
- 1:26:45counts. A buddy, don't say that [ __ ]
- 1:26:48about yourself. I think you were very
- 1:26:49sincerely kissed in the House of the
- 1:26:50Dead arcade. Well, I was so caught off
- 1:26:52guard, I did not stop playing the game.
- 1:26:55I was getting smooshed to just
- 1:26:58I got I would have just turned the gun
- 1:27:00on myself.
- 1:27:03Mag we're not even married.
- 1:27:06This is the second time of m I've uh
- 1:27:09this is the second time this podcast
- 1:27:11I've name dropped Michelle Gold. She
- 1:27:12reminded me of the term mag dumping the
- 1:27:14other day. I've just been saying it
- 1:27:16everywhere. Yeah. Like as in your
- 1:27:18magazine. Yeah. Like like emptying a
- 1:27:19magazine. Yeah, I'm going to bring up
- 1:27:22the idea of gaming and and the kissing
- 1:27:25of further uh just well no in a negative
- 1:27:28way. It was just like I remember being
- 1:27:30at this there's this girl that in middle
- 1:27:32school we like dated for like a week and
- 1:27:37and you were how old? Do you remember
- 1:27:39whatever whatever age you are in sixth
- 1:27:41grade? Oh, sixth grade. Okay. Early.
- 1:27:44Yeah. Um sorry comedians you got to ask.
- 1:27:46Oh, yeah. But um we I don't remember
- 1:27:49like we never we never kissed or touched
- 1:27:51in person, but we would like kiss on AOL
- 1:27:55or whatever. What would that look like?
- 1:27:57We were like I kiss you like typing out
- 1:27:59or whatever. Sorry. Extremely cringe.
- 1:28:01Anyway, um but then
- 1:28:06it's like you're making out like Amed.
- 1:28:11Darren, dude, I like loaded that up as
- 1:28:13you were saying it. And I was like, I
- 1:28:14hope he doesn't say that's off, man, cuz
- 1:28:16I'm going to come in hot with this. It's
- 1:28:19like it's going to be like the Chicago
- 1:28:20Resident Evil riff all over. They're
- 1:28:23going to carry me out of this studio on
- 1:28:24their shoulders like I'm damn Rudy.
- 1:28:28But so, okay, so years later, um,
- 1:28:30established some degree at least of like
- 1:28:33we have flirted, we've literally dated,
- 1:28:34whatever. Um, it's high school, we're at
- 1:28:37a party, it's maybe like 11th or 12th
- 1:28:39grade, maybe like 11th grade or
- 1:28:41something. Pool party, we're flirting.
- 1:28:43It's kind of going well. I can kind of
- 1:28:44feel like it's going to be a thing. Uh
- 1:28:46but then somebody's like, "Yo, you want
- 1:28:47to play Smash?" And I'm like, "I gotta
- 1:28:51play Smash Brothers right now. I gotta
- 1:28:53play [ __ ] Smash Brothers." And so I
- 1:28:56end up playing like Smash Brothers for
- 1:28:57like a few hours with the with the
- 1:28:58homies and then like she fully like left
- 1:29:01and I like I'm like I think about that
- 1:29:03all the time. Not all the time, but
- 1:29:04every but once in a while it comes to
- 1:29:06mind. I'm like that was so stupid. But
- 1:29:09anyway, I have definitely done things
- 1:29:11like that.
- 1:29:12Sometimes you just got to choose gaming,
- 1:29:14you know.
- 1:29:17Whatever. [ __ ] means nothing.
- 1:29:21I was like, I can't get I can't get a a
- 1:29:23completion on [ __ ]
- 1:29:25It's not a cheese%
- 1:29:28platinum [ __ ]
- 1:29:31I know. I was like talking about this
- 1:29:32with like my therapist or I was I like I
- 1:29:35don't think my like prior priorities are
- 1:29:36right cuz like I don't know like
- 1:29:39regularly I I'm like talking to people
- 1:29:41and like I think like I'm tired I want a
- 1:29:43game. I just go home.
- 1:29:46Whenever I get like a a new game like I
- 1:29:49I don't game as often as I used to but
- 1:29:51when I get a new one I get like too you
- 1:29:54get the damn zooies. I get the zooies
- 1:29:56and I get too into it and then
- 1:30:00like like my wife who I love will be
- 1:30:01like I'm going to bed like really like
- 1:30:06I'm sorry I'm about to get a cool car.
- 1:30:10You don't understand. One time a girl I
- 1:30:12was dating really ragged me when she
- 1:30:14said oh are you playing one of your
- 1:30:15games where Japanese teenagers talk to
- 1:30:17each other. I was like, damn. Well,
- 1:30:20times it gets all
- 1:30:22I got like so into Disco Alisium, which
- 1:30:24is just Oh, hell yeah. It's just like a
- 1:30:27story game. It's just reading. Yeah.
- 1:30:29Yeah. Well, Disco Allesium is a game I
- 1:30:31expect my partner to get and understand
- 1:30:33the appeal of. She actually did really
- 1:30:36like that. Yeah, it's well written. I I
- 1:30:39like hit the jackpot recently with like
- 1:30:41a person that I had been hooking up
- 1:30:43with. They really liked being ignored
- 1:30:46while they did their own thing. So I
- 1:30:49could just like play my 3DS like
- 1:30:52directly next to a person just doing
- 1:30:54their oath. And that's a dream for me,
- 1:30:56you know. I get to I get gaming and and
- 1:30:59intimacy, I guess. Damn. The vibe in one
- 1:31:02podcast has never shifted so heavily
- 1:31:04when one guest left. It's been all gamer
- 1:31:06talk now. I actually want to I can play
- 1:31:09my 3DS. I I want to like I want to
- 1:31:12circle back to something you said. Oh
- 1:31:13no. Uh adults who uh can't do horror
- 1:31:16movies. M that's like uh that's uh
- 1:31:19ridiculous, right? That's like a very
- 1:31:22silly thing. Yeah. It's like you know
- 1:31:24this is fake, right? Yeah. Right. Uh
- 1:31:26yeah, I'll help you out, bro. The people
- 1:31:27on real. Yeah. It's like uh do you know
- 1:31:31that like Tyler the Creator thing about
- 1:31:33like how is cyber bullying real? Just
- 1:31:35turn off the computer and walk away.
- 1:31:37That is how I feel about adults being
- 1:31:39scared of horror movies. That's
- 1:31:42Well, yeah. So, Benny, you never said
- 1:31:44like if you're into horror or not in
- 1:31:45general. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I am. Yeah.
- 1:31:47Okay, that I feel like that makes sense.
- 1:31:49I think there was like a a switch that
- 1:31:50flipped at a certain age where like as a
- 1:31:52kid I was like, why would I want to be
- 1:31:53scared? And then genuinely at some point
- 1:31:56I was like, oh, it's not real. Yeah,
- 1:31:58it's not real, bro. So, do you get do
- 1:32:00you get like adrenaline from hor? I
- 1:32:02don't know about you guys. I just
- 1:32:03haven't played horror games. I just
- 1:32:04haven't done it. A lot of I haven't
- 1:32:07played a lot of horror. I like zombie
- 1:32:09like zombie games. Okay. Oh, sure. Yeah,
- 1:32:11I've done that. even as like a I I I had
- 1:32:14such like a comically liberal Boston
- 1:32:17household that like I couldn't I
- 1:32:19couldn't comfortably play Call of Duty.
- 1:32:21Like I'm committing a crime, but if I
- 1:32:23shot zombies or Aliens, it felt okay.
- 1:32:26Then Halo 2 pulled the rug out from
- 1:32:27under like I'm still I'm still doing
- 1:32:31one of my one of my favorite memories
- 1:32:33about like memories of gaming is one
- 1:32:35time I was Resident Evil I was playing
- 1:32:37Resident Evil 2 remake and my roommate
- 1:32:39was watching me. my roommate who like at
- 1:32:41the time didn't really care about video
- 1:32:42games. It was just like I don't know
- 1:32:44home. And uh if you ever play Resident
- 1:32:47Evil 2, there's like a big monster that
- 1:32:49chases you throughout the game. Yeah.
- 1:32:51And uh there's like a quiet part where I
- 1:32:53like solve the puzzle and that monster
- 1:32:55like jumps out of a window at you. Then
- 1:32:57me and my roommate like a Scooby-Doo
- 1:32:59episode. We both went
- 1:33:02and I like actually like hold that
- 1:33:04memory
- 1:33:05like that was great. Yeah. That's like
- 1:33:07dear. I think I think Also, one time I
- 1:33:10beat a Dark Souls boss and he un
- 1:33:12unprompted he posted up for a high five.
- 1:33:15Hell yeah. That's beautiful, dude. Yeah,
- 1:33:18I hugged a roommate after cuz he Did you
- 1:33:20have the same thing where a roommate
- 1:33:21made you play Dark Souls? No. No, I was
- 1:33:24playing Yeah. Yeah. No, nobody's ever
- 1:33:26made me play Dark Souls. That's always
- 1:33:28been on my own accord. What? But I feel
- 1:33:32I love Dark Souls. I love the from
- 1:33:33software games, but I do think that like
- 1:33:35the first time you do it, I do think
- 1:33:37it's kind of somebody gives you that
- 1:33:38push. But where was I going with this?
- 1:33:40Well, similarly to ridiculous adults not
- 1:33:43being able to do horror movies
- 1:33:45sometimes, like you meet like a grown
- 1:33:47adult who's self selfidentify as a
- 1:33:50gamer, but they're like, "Oh, but I'm
- 1:33:51I'm too scared to play Elden Ring." And
- 1:33:53uh you're a child.
- 1:33:56Scared or bad? Like they're afraid of
- 1:33:58like dying a lot. And it's like, "Hey,
- 1:34:00uh the game's not real, bro. Yeah,
- 1:34:02little pro tip. The game's already You
- 1:34:04die in the game, you're still alive,
- 1:34:05bro. I did finally like each avatar is a
- 1:34:08piece of my soul.
- 1:34:10A hard like people are like afraid to
- 1:34:13die in a game. It's like, yeah, you die
- 1:34:15and you try again and you beat the guy
- 1:34:16and it's cool. Well, some people don't
- 1:34:18like frustration as I'm not speaking as
- 1:34:21you know. I'm fine with a hard game. To
- 1:34:24which I would say get get over I'm
- 1:34:26gatekeeping. Get gatekeeping on the
- 1:34:28Betty Feldman podcast. Well, okay.
- 1:34:31Literally, I think that the the from
- 1:34:33software die, do it over and over again
- 1:34:35mentality. The ability to handle that
- 1:34:37frustration very obviously translates to
- 1:34:41standup com.
- 1:34:43That's why so many standups are going to
- 1:34:45correct myself. I'm not gatekeeping. I
- 1:34:47want more people to do a cool thing. I'm
- 1:34:48doing the opposite of gatekeeping. Yeah.
- 1:34:51I'm uh opening. I'm issuing a little
- 1:34:53correction to myself. Yeah. Yeah. Uh
- 1:34:56you're going get good. [ __ ] I want
- 1:34:58everybody to get good. My my old
- 1:35:01roommate Sorry. Oh, no. You go. Oh, my
- 1:35:03old roommate got cursed pretty early on
- 1:35:05in Dark Souls and like it's pretty hard
- 1:35:07and annoying to like get uncursed, but
- 1:35:09we continually instead of saying get
- 1:35:11good forever, we always say uh get
- 1:35:13uncursed, which are kind of fun. Oh
- 1:35:16yeah, double cursed. You have to do it
- 1:35:18in stand up. You do have to get
- 1:35:20uncursed. That feels right. What were
- 1:35:23you gonna say? But like out I I would
- 1:35:25say like this doesn't just apply to like
- 1:35:26Dark Souls. implies like out of movies
- 1:35:29and comedy where it's like food fight
- 1:35:32that you like don't enjoy kind of like
- 1:35:34bumping up against like a difficult
- 1:35:36piece of art. That's like a good feeling
- 1:35:38to me. That's fun. It's fun to like wrap
- 1:35:40my head around something like incredibly
- 1:35:42dense. Yeah. I like at some point I'm
- 1:35:46sorry I'm boring you. Oh no no no no. I
- 1:35:48just I just had made a bunch of balls
- 1:35:49and I thought it'd be funny to throw
- 1:35:50them. I just made a bunch of balls. No,
- 1:35:52no, no. I enjoyed that point quite a
- 1:35:54lot. Yeah. At some point I think like
- 1:35:58I I realized I wasn't actually offended.
- 1:36:00Oh yeah. And issuing a correction
- 1:36:02earlier I actually wasn't gatekeeping.
- 1:36:05I felt like I needed at some point in my
- 1:36:08like early 20s to like if I like to
- 1:36:12force myself to like watch consume art
- 1:36:15that I didn't think I liked. Okay. And
- 1:36:17like sometimes I was like correct or
- 1:36:20like I I really didn't like it. But then
- 1:36:22sometimes I was like, "Oh, I just didn't
- 1:36:23know enough about this kind of I think
- 1:36:25even a bad movie is better than no
- 1:36:27movie." What's What's like an example of
- 1:36:28that though? Like art that you thought
- 1:36:29you didn't like? I think like like
- 1:36:32literally like like abstract art. Like I
- 1:36:36You worked at a museum. I worked at
- 1:36:40like like Frank Zappo was like a I went
- 1:36:41on a big journey with him over my
- 1:36:44lifetime. That's so because you you've
- 1:36:46showed me some Zappa stuff that I didn't
- 1:36:47know like about that that Doo [ __ ] album.
- 1:36:50Yeah. Well, I think like I had to kind
- 1:36:51of go like cuz I think at first I got
- 1:36:54into him because he was funny, but then
- 1:36:56a lot of the humor is very edge lordy.
- 1:36:57So then I kind of like was like, "Oh,
- 1:36:59no. This is offensive." And then I was
- 1:37:00like, "Oh, wait, but some of the music
- 1:37:01is good." And then I I had to figure out
- 1:37:03how I felt and it was like I a lot of
- 1:37:06stuff like that people come at it from
- 1:37:07like a defensive position where it's
- 1:37:09just like they can't like really make
- 1:37:11heads or tails of it cuz at the
- 1:37:12beginning you're not supposed to. you're
- 1:37:14not meant to. But like immediately
- 1:37:15they'll like they'll be like, "Oh, you
- 1:37:17think you're [ __ ] smarter than me?
- 1:37:19Like maybe you're [ __ ] stupid. Maybe
- 1:37:20I'm like seeing something that like
- 1:37:22everybody who likes this isn't seeing,
- 1:37:23which is is that it's fake and
- 1:37:25bullshit." And like that I think is a
- 1:37:27feeling that a lot of people need to get
- 1:37:29over. Yeah. That's like a lame like when
- 1:37:32people like will be I don't know if that
- 1:37:34made sense. No, no, no. Like people will
- 1:37:35say that like about a movie, it's like
- 1:37:37that could never happen. Like that's
- 1:37:39like that's not that doesn't make or
- 1:37:41break.
- 1:37:43It's also like the It's the only good
- 1:37:46movie. Yeah. That can never happen.
- 1:37:51Yeah. Well, it's like this the whole
- 1:37:52like my kid could paint this attitude.
- 1:37:55Yeah. I Okay, I do sometimes though like
- 1:38:00Okay, some abstract art totally is good.
- 1:38:03Some of it I am like shut up. You know
- 1:38:06what I mean? But that's like any any
- 1:38:08artist. Definitely like people that are
- 1:38:10just I don't see a lot of stuff that
- 1:38:12like to like full on like say shut up.
- 1:38:14But like the way I approach it is like a
- 1:38:17lot of people will see like a piece of
- 1:38:19like abstract art they don't like and
- 1:38:20kind of respond to it like the arts is
- 1:38:22getting away with something. I don't
- 1:38:24view I view art as a medium of
- 1:38:26self-expression. I don't see it as like
- 1:38:28you have to be like a certain amount of
- 1:38:31good to get away with being called art
- 1:38:33if that makes sense. I don't see it as
- 1:38:35like a technical competition. So, like
- 1:38:38from that perspective, like I I I don't
- 1:38:40really respond to like even like the
- 1:38:42most out there, obtuse, like esoteric
- 1:38:45[ __ ] like the tampon and a teacup kind
- 1:38:47of stuff. Like I I don't I don't tend to
- 1:38:49respond too harshly. Not saying I'm so
- 1:38:51enlightened. This is like uh Yeah.
- 1:38:53attitude I've taken on over the years
- 1:38:55after after Yeah. When I was younger, I
- 1:38:57I did used to respond negatively to that
- 1:38:59kind of stuff. And I think I was coming
- 1:39:00at it from a defensive position. Yeah.
- 1:39:02Cuz Yeah. Yeah. Like I feel like cuz
- 1:39:04when you're young, you want to prove
- 1:39:05something. You want to prove you're
- 1:39:07smart. That's very true. That's so true.
- 1:39:09I feel like like the classic like like
- 1:39:11one of the more famous examples is like
- 1:39:14like Marcel Duchamp like put the toilet
- 1:39:17seat on and people are like this is an
- 1:39:20art. But it's actually like I don't know
- 1:39:22man it kind of rocks. So funny. It's so
- 1:39:25funny. I say that I'm I'm not coming
- 1:39:27from this from this from like a Yeah.
- 1:39:29Sorry. I hope I didn't seem like I was
- 1:39:30trying to like big time your opinion.
- 1:39:32No, I guess my my thought is like I'm
- 1:39:33not coming from this from like a
- 1:39:34shooting from the hip. haven't looked
- 1:39:36into it type of way. I've looked into
- 1:39:38it. I've looked at a bunch of like
- 1:39:40modern plenty of people down the rabbit
- 1:39:42hole of like why like I know, you know,
- 1:39:44but it's like I at the end of the day
- 1:39:45I'm like I see people who are like on
- 1:39:47Instagram or whatever they're like doing
- 1:39:49that [ __ ] where they're clearly
- 1:39:50wealthy and have like a they're like a
- 1:39:52landlord who just drizzles paint on a
- 1:39:55different well. So, I think that I do
- 1:39:58think that those people are genuinely in
- 1:40:01that camp of like, uh, you're just
- 1:40:03getting away with being rich and having
- 1:40:05enough money to buy paint and splash it
- 1:40:08on a thing. And I do think there is like
- 1:40:10a that does genuinely hurt my soul
- 1:40:11because I feel like they're sort of I
- 1:40:14mean, it it does make it at least Well,
- 1:40:15I would I would say then maybe I'm
- 1:40:18putting this thought together as I say
- 1:40:20it, so it won't be particularly
- 1:40:21articulate or something. I would say in
- 1:40:23a situation like that when you see some
- 1:40:25like kind of like Jackson Pollock mess
- 1:40:27like a paint splatter on like a canvas
- 1:40:29or something like that the story behind
- 1:40:31the making of the art is part of the
- 1:40:32piece of the art itself. It's just like
- 1:40:34the story can be annoying. Yeah. If the
- 1:40:37story is annoying that's bad art. I
- 1:40:39would say if the story is like
- 1:40:40interesting it contributes to it. It's
- 1:40:42good. Yeah. Well, but also first person
- 1:40:45to do something and the you know what I
- 1:40:46mean? If like if you're like Rothkco,
- 1:40:48you're experimenting with colors. You're
- 1:40:50going, "What if we put this shade of
- 1:40:52blue over and over again layered in this
- 1:40:54different way?" And it's interesting. It
- 1:40:55creates a sort of unique vibe of maybe
- 1:40:57the ocean or fireplace. And also, there
- 1:40:59is a lot to say for how it reframes your
- 1:41:00like perception of like what art can be.
- 1:41:02I think that is very, but they already I
- 1:41:04guess my thought is they already [ __ ]
- 1:41:06did that [ __ ] And now if you're doing
- 1:41:08that now, if you make a Rothco now, it's
- 1:41:10like, dude, we know. You're like Adrien
- 1:41:13Brody just doing Basot now.
- 1:41:17Like guys, you're saying quit reheating
- 1:41:19Mark Rothkco's damn nachos.
- 1:41:22Right. Right. Right. There's people like
- 1:41:24there's literally somebody copying Basad
- 1:41:26on like Tik Tok and all the comments are
- 1:41:28like he's like a white guy and people
- 1:41:30are like, "What are you doing, dude?"
- 1:41:31Well, I'm like, "Yeah, I don't mean to
- 1:41:33like come out fully in support of like
- 1:41:35people who are like doing this, but
- 1:41:36they're like clearly like [ __ ]
- 1:41:37charlatans or whatever." Like we know so
- 1:41:40many people who like do this super like
- 1:41:43Yeah. esoteric style of standup where
- 1:41:46just like well you're just doing this
- 1:41:47because you're like kind of bad at
- 1:41:48standup.
- 1:41:50But you said like I feel like I don't
- 1:41:53know I have such like a
- 1:41:57like trying to categorize what is and
- 1:41:59isn't good art is so hard cuz then like
- 1:42:02there's like such like there's like some
- 1:42:04things that feel like really like oh
- 1:42:05this is obviously bad like the like the
- 1:42:08landlord dripping paint on like a thing.
- 1:42:10Yeah. I'm I'm also thinking of a
- 1:42:11specific landlord guy that I used to
- 1:42:13know.
- 1:42:15Got a landlord in mind and like the guy
- 1:42:18who does like the big like
- 1:42:20like steel uh balloon animals. Like I
- 1:42:24feel
- 1:42:25every like at least like the art
- 1:42:27community like hates guy cuz he just was
- 1:42:30an investment banker who was just like I
- 1:42:33can massproduce art and it but the thing
- 1:42:36is I'm not arguing against those guys
- 1:42:37being [ __ ] I'm just saying a lot of
- 1:42:38the time you can tell. Yeah. But then
- 1:42:40like sometimes like it does like you see
- 1:42:43it once it's like okay. I'm not gonna
- 1:42:44lie to you. The very first time I saw a
- 1:42:46steel balloon animal I did I did for
- 1:42:49real go I did for real go that's neat.
- 1:42:52But I but I don't like I actually don't
- 1:42:54know what the story behind it and the I
- 1:42:56don't like the mass manufacturer. I
- 1:42:57don't like this investment. Well that's
- 1:42:59like the weird and like like I think
- 1:43:01like one of uh my favorite photographers
- 1:43:05uh who is like a cool guy kind of uh
- 1:43:08Robert Mapleorp. did like the cover for
- 1:43:10Patty Smith's Horses. Like he did like a
- 1:43:12lot of like really like transgressive
- 1:43:15like gay photography.
- 1:43:17Put no effort into his art. He's just
- 1:43:19really good at photograph. I watched a
- 1:43:21documentary about him. Everyone's like,
- 1:43:22"Yeah, he had no depth as a guy." Well,
- 1:43:25yeah. This is what I'm saying. Like it
- 1:43:28just looks awesome. No, this is what I'm
- 1:43:30saying. Like effort is not conducive to
- 1:43:32good or bad art. Like a lot of the best
- 1:43:34fans in the world were just of all time
- 1:43:36were just [ __ ] around. You're like,
- 1:43:38"Oh, god damn it." Like I don't know.
- 1:43:39Like it's hard to have like a hard and
- 1:43:42fast rule that someone doesn't break. I
- 1:43:44mean, dude, Second City is private
- 1:43:46equity. Really? Yeah.
- 1:43:49Owned by like a massive just like the
- 1:43:51Red Sox. Really? Was it always or is
- 1:43:54that like recent? Uh last few years. I
- 1:43:56don't know. At one point they realized
- 1:43:57that the they realized that improv and
- 1:43:59comedy classes were a racket and so did
- 1:44:00I. What did you Oh, I think it was um
- 1:44:05How To with John Wilson, which rocks,
- 1:44:07but like He talked about um his ac
- 1:44:11cappella group was actually targeted by
- 1:44:14a cult because the cult did like market
- 1:44:16research that was like ac capella people
- 1:44:18are susceptible to joining really and I
- 1:44:22feel like improv is like right behind a
- 1:44:24capella. Can you like try to like parse
- 1:44:26that out? Why is that? I think it was
- 1:44:28like it's group comm Yeah. It's like the
- 1:44:31search for community and stuff like but
- 1:44:33is there also is the ac cappella mind
- 1:44:35just inherently soft?
- 1:44:38Well, they are like they are looking I
- 1:44:40feel like that's a group that's looking
- 1:44:41for community at all costs. Like
- 1:44:47I I don't care about if I have to get up
- 1:44:48in front of my dearest and dearest and
- 1:44:50go Yeah. Yeah. If you go up to somebody
- 1:44:53and do a scale, they'll take whatever
- 1:44:54[ __ ] pamphlet.
- 1:44:57I And I listen, I'm not sorry to [ __ ] on
- 1:44:59the capella community. I do think I
- 1:45:01think sometimes it's amazing and
- 1:45:02sometimes it's awesome, but often it's
- 1:45:05horrible. Uh, and I remember going to
- 1:45:07this ac capella concert at like at my
- 1:45:10college and I was just like, do you guys
- 1:45:11know the vibe that you have right now?
- 1:45:14Like this is horrible. That was like
- 1:45:17Sorry, I don't mean to yeah put a
- 1:45:18flamethrower to the ac capella
- 1:45:20community, but uh it's like it's dumb,
- 1:45:23right? It's stupid. Like even at the
- 1:45:26evenapella at its best, it's just like a
- 1:45:28trick. Like who cares? I forgot I I I
- 1:45:31had like a oneliner that I would do
- 1:45:33sometimes when I just needed like a
- 1:45:35quick joke and it was a man acappella
- 1:45:38people are going to be so pissed when
- 1:45:40they discover instruments
- 1:45:44like you're just like covering a song
- 1:45:46that somebody else wrote and you're not
- 1:45:48like putting like a thematic spin on it.
- 1:45:50You're just doing it like you're just
- 1:45:52doing like a what if like what if this
- 1:45:54sounded a little stupid? Derso didn't
- 1:45:57get into his a capella group. Where's
- 1:45:59the vision? I just want vision. And the
- 1:46:03weird thing is I think it's like hard.
- 1:46:04Like I think it's hard to do. Yeah, of
- 1:46:06course it's hard. I can tell it's hard,
- 1:46:08but it's just like it's just proof that
- 1:46:09something hard isn't worth doing. I'm
- 1:46:12going to I'm going to agree with that.
- 1:46:13And I think that if I like with the the
- 1:46:15jealousy thing, if I could sing, if I
- 1:46:17had a beautiful singing voice, I do
- 1:46:19think that there's a chance that at some
- 1:46:20point I would have tried to do. So there
- 1:46:22is absolutely there's absolutely an envy
- 1:46:24underlying current. If I were if I were
- 1:46:27if I had a beautiful singing voice, I
- 1:46:28would have I would have joined Pearl
- 1:46:30Jam. Yeah, true. I would have I would
- 1:46:32have become the lead instead. Yeah,
- 1:46:35true.
- 1:46:38I have a beautiful voice, but I could
- 1:46:39only do
- 1:46:42Let's harmonize. Let's do it. Oh my god.
- 1:46:45I got kicked out. What's everyone's
- 1:46:46karaoke goto? Uh, monster mash. Okay.
- 1:46:53Oh, come on now. Boom. Boom. I mean, if
- 1:46:57I'm Are you going to like hold it
- 1:46:58against me personally if I'm not I
- 1:47:01haven't even made a collage. I'm not
- 1:47:03going to
- 1:47:06They actually I don't have a go-to
- 1:47:07character. I did Slipnot one time and
- 1:47:08that was a lot of fun. Slipnot song. Did
- 1:47:11you duality? I've done duality. Duality.
- 1:47:14[ __ ] yeah, dude. That's a good one.
- 1:47:16Whenever like a horse sounds like this,
- 1:47:18I still think like that's the duality
- 1:47:19voice.
- 1:47:21That's slip knot, baby. My goto. I do I
- 1:47:24do uh suffragette city. Yeah. Say it
- 1:47:27ain't so. Hey man,
- 1:47:31dude. Exactly. Saying that at Quirio at
- 1:47:33Midway. Come on. That's fun. I was
- 1:47:36drown.
- 1:47:38I'm going to sing Duality at Quirio. I'm
- 1:47:41going to invade a queer space and sing
- 1:47:43Duality. One time I did the monster mash
- 1:47:46in the suburbs of Massachusetts and then
- 1:47:48a man who had hands but no arms
- 1:47:52came up to me and like put his hand on
- 1:47:55me and said that's the best version of
- 1:47:57the monster I ever had.
- 1:48:02You sang the song.
- 1:48:04That's like that's probably the best day
- 1:48:06of my life. Sorry. Wedding. Well, you
- 1:48:07know it's it's uh invented in
- 1:48:10Somerville. So maybe that monster
- 1:48:13monster
- 1:48:15like karaoke karaoke
- 1:48:18Japanese I'm invent I'm picturing the
- 1:48:20invention of karaoke I'm picturing a guy
- 1:48:22with like beakers
- 1:48:26perfect just one last
- 1:48:29also cuz no no nobody asked but um my my
- 1:48:31go-to is Moving Out by Billy Joel.
- 1:48:33That's a great character. It's a really
- 1:48:35good it's a really good one. It always
- 1:48:37always lights the room up. People always
- 1:48:39get into the act
- 1:48:42of Yeah. Right. Well, I I think like
- 1:48:45there there's obvious overlap, but like
- 1:48:48things there is like good songs and then
- 1:48:51there's good karaoke songs. Oh, yeah.
- 1:48:53There's a lot of overlap, but there's
- 1:48:54some things that it's like, oh, well,
- 1:48:55that's just a dang good karaoke song.
- 1:48:58Yeah, right. I also Girls by the Beasty
- 1:49:00Boys has been my go-to recently. Wow.
- 1:49:03Can't make that aquarium. No, you can't.
- 1:49:06You know what? Well, I hope with a with
- 1:49:08a sense of irony. I feel like the Beasty
- 1:49:10Boys had a sense of irony. Uh I mean
- 1:49:13that's that's up for that's up for
- 1:49:15debate with that first album. I mean
- 1:49:16they like they like apologized that
- 1:49:18first album. That first album almost
- 1:49:20called it something. Yeah, they Yeah,
- 1:49:22they almost called it something.
- 1:49:24What's up? Want to hear a joke? Sure. I
- 1:49:26like that they were apologetically party
- 1:49:28rocking.
- 1:49:32Yeah, she rocks. Mhm. Bennett LMFAO.
- 1:49:37Yeah. Yep. Yep. Yep. That was the name
- 1:49:39of them, right? Yes. I like that. That's
- 1:49:42a That's an uncle nephew duo. Yeah. Sky
- 1:49:44Blue and Red Fu. Can I tell Can I tell
- 1:49:47you a joke that uh if somebody if
- 1:49:50somebody's an hour and 50 minutes into
- 1:49:52uh a podcast that they are enough of a
- 1:49:56they're into this enough that I can tell
- 1:49:58this joke and get away with it? Okay. Uh
- 1:50:00well, I'm giving that context. Get away
- 1:50:02with it. Yes. Exactly. I I It's like I
- 1:50:05don't want to tweet it because I don't
- 1:50:06like the vibe of it and I don't want to
- 1:50:08do it in standup because I don't like
- 1:50:09the vibe of it, but I think it's funny
- 1:50:11and I can only do it in a context where
- 1:50:13I very heavily couch it and go, "Listen,
- 1:50:15I know." Anyway, here's a thought. Um,
- 1:50:18so Anthro Berdane uh killed himself over
- 1:50:21a woman. Uh, just goes to show [ __ ] is
- 1:50:24better than dinner.
- 1:50:26Okay,
- 1:50:28that's funny. I think that's funny. I
- 1:50:30don't think I can ever say that in any
- 1:50:32other context. Also, by the way, we're
- 1:50:34almost at two hours and that's probably
- 1:50:35when I'll make sure to free you. All
- 1:50:37right. But, um, no, I'm having fun. I'm
- 1:50:39rolling. This I'm having a very nice.
- 1:50:40Yeah, I'm having an excellent hang with
- 1:50:42you folks. We're off boss and into
- 1:50:44gaming and all kinds of damn [ __ ]
- 1:50:47The the the futility of a capella is an
- 1:50:49art form. Just the cosmic uselessness of
- 1:50:52any human being that's ever done a scale
- 1:50:53with their mouth.
- 1:50:55They um they made a reality show about
- 1:50:58the ac cappella group at my high school.
- 1:51:00Uh that was like it was like right when
- 1:51:02like the pitch perfect boom was going
- 1:51:04on. What was that? America's least
- 1:51:06talented high school. Yes.
- 1:51:10I would watch
- 1:51:12out of America's least talented high
- 1:51:14school.
- 1:51:16No, it was it was like them in
- 1:51:18competition. We went to 800 high schools
- 1:51:20to find the world's shittiest.
- 1:51:22Sorry. They No, they honestly they would
- 1:51:24have I mean everybody was very talented
- 1:51:27at my my high school. I was I shouldn't
- 1:51:30[ __ ] on their talent but man what a bad
- 1:51:32reality show, right? I think it's hard
- 1:51:34to make a bad like reality shows in
- 1:51:36general like you know they're bad
- 1:51:38already. So making one that's not
- 1:51:39watchable. Well, how would you find
- 1:51:42someone to root for? You have an
- 1:51:44annoying teenagers who do an There was
- 1:51:46no one to There was no one to root for.
- 1:51:48I forget what it was called. There was
- 1:51:50like
- 1:51:52a reality show
- 1:51:55in our childhood
- 1:51:57where it was of love. No, it was like a
- 1:52:00reverse American Idol where they told
- 1:52:02everyone they were looking for the best
- 1:52:03people and then they only passed the
- 1:52:05worst people and it just that's me. It
- 1:52:07felt it was way too big. That's so early
- 1:52:102000s. It was so dawn of reality. So to
- 1:52:13not to interrupt, I am laughing that
- 1:52:15like I've had such like a weird like
- 1:52:18like bipolar pose this whole podcast cuz
- 1:52:21like 30 minutes ago I was like well all
- 1:52:23art is equal under God's eyes. Then 15
- 1:52:25minutes later I was like yeah if you do
- 1:52:26probably should kill yourself.
- 1:52:29I don't man I don't I don't have an
- 1:52:32opinion that can't change on a dime.
- 1:52:35My morals aren't loose. Yeah. This guy
- 1:52:37doing just vibes based opinions here.
- 1:52:40Yeah. Going back to what you were
- 1:52:41saying, that's incredibly mean. They're
- 1:52:43doing it's a reality show of only sanas.
- 1:52:46Yeah. Yeah. But I remember there was no
- 1:52:50one to root for cuz like the judges
- 1:52:52weren't even like being like funny like
- 1:52:55Did you guys ever watch like uh did you
- 1:52:57guys ever watch Last Comic Standing when
- 1:52:58that was I watched it a lot. I was like
- 1:53:00obsessed. Do we know what Last Comic?
- 1:53:02Everyone watch some sets and some of
- 1:53:03that. It's like I remember you know how
- 1:53:05like they did the episodes of American
- 1:53:06Idol where she's like hero the the worst
- 1:53:08auditions. I remember they tried to do
- 1:53:10that with Last Comic Standing. It's just
- 1:53:12like it was like brutal cuz it's like
- 1:53:15watching bad standup is just it's
- 1:53:17uncomfortable. I think Yeah, it's more
- 1:53:19uncomfortable than watching bad sing
- 1:53:21actually. Bad singing done in that was
- 1:53:22uncomfortable too. It's pretty insane. I
- 1:53:24feel like again like some of my favorite
- 1:53:27singers are bad singers. I mean like
- 1:53:29Well, I would say they're not trying to
- 1:53:31like be judged on the metric of am I a
- 1:53:33good singer. Yeah. Like watching someone
- 1:53:36with an acoustic guitar who thinks
- 1:53:38they're a [ __ ] superstar just do like
- 1:53:40the roughest and they're your best
- 1:53:42friend.
- 1:53:44I used to go to a lot and they're your
- 1:53:46brother No Gallagher.
- 1:53:49I used to go to like a lot of like
- 1:53:51suburbs of Massachusetts folk open mics
- 1:53:54cuz my dad Oh, cuz your dad? Yeah. I
- 1:53:55would go with my dad and play bass for
- 1:53:56him. Oh, that's a really uh cute uh but
- 1:54:01my dad would like hear writes songs and
- 1:54:04he's not like a famous but he writes
- 1:54:05songs he's good at but he would do like
- 1:54:07his own songs and I remember he would
- 1:54:09just like come off stage sometimes go if
- 1:54:10I hear one more teenage girl sing
- 1:54:13Hallelujah I'm going to kill myself
- 1:54:16cuz it was like just like everyone
- 1:54:18thought that they could be the Shrek
- 1:54:20yeah right which like they didn't like
- 1:54:23he's like they don't even know who
- 1:54:24Leonard Cohen is
- 1:54:26I'm going to Oh, John Kale. John Kale.
- 1:54:28John Kale did that song. John Kale
- 1:54:30originally wrote the song Let It Go in
- 1:54:32Company. I did not know that. Or it
- 1:54:33might be the other way around. I didn't
- 1:54:35know that. Yeah. Right. Please, please
- 1:54:37tell that to your father. I will. And
- 1:54:38he's going to kill himself, dude. He's
- 1:54:41going to kill. Please tell us in the
- 1:54:42form of song. Are you guys familiar with
- 1:54:45um the ac capella group Pentatonics?
- 1:54:47Yeah. Yeah. I think that their vibe is
- 1:54:51so fascinating.
- 1:54:53They're like Christian, right? Are they
- 1:54:54Christian?
- 1:54:55Let me let me let me clarify. I think
- 1:54:57that their vibe is horrid.
- 1:55:00It's like it's like very like um like
- 1:55:02200. Well, I'm actually trying to work
- 1:55:05with them. So, no,
- 1:55:07it's really it's really like 2010's um
- 1:55:10like millennial hipster core and like a
- 1:55:15like beanies and like it seems like
- 1:55:18Yeah, maybe I say it's Christian because
- 1:55:20it seems very Christian girl. No, no,
- 1:55:21no, it is. Well, okay. They have a song.
- 1:55:23They every year around Christmas as a
- 1:55:27bit I love to send my friends their
- 1:55:29cover of Little Drummer Boy. They're
- 1:55:31absolut I think they're absolutely
- 1:55:32Christian because they're like
- 1:55:36like they really give a [ __ ] about like
- 1:55:39Drummer Boy. They got the one guy like
- 1:55:41beatboxing.
- 1:55:44Yeah. Yeah. Right. I think that's my
- 1:55:46problem with ac cappella. I feel like if
- 1:55:48you're a capella there's only like one
- 1:55:50version of good singing, right? That's
- 1:55:52just like technically good singing which
- 1:55:54I I don't believe. I just don't think
- 1:55:55they should have a platform. You know,
- 1:55:57they should not be allowed to spread
- 1:55:58their gospel. Yeah, we got a deplatform
- 1:56:01acappella.
- 1:56:02The New Jersey the I I think quite good
- 1:56:05New Jersey punk band Titus Andronicus
- 1:56:08did a like the opposite of that where
- 1:56:09they had a very funny Christmas version
- 1:56:11of Little Drummer Boy that was to the
- 1:56:14tune of Piano Man by Billy Joel. I said,
- 1:56:17"Play us a song. You're the drummer boy.
- 1:56:20We're all in the mood for
- 1:56:24and it's funny every time. I uh I just I
- 1:56:27like when people do like weird stuff
- 1:56:29with their voice. I don't know. There's
- 1:56:30like uh I I I just found this on like
- 1:56:33Spotify. There's a lady who did like an
- 1:56:35ac cappella cover of like every single
- 1:56:38Smith song. Literally every single Smith
- 1:56:40song. They sound like pretty cool.
- 1:56:42Honestly, I think her name is like
- 1:56:44Janice Whe. I'll give her a shout out
- 1:56:46cuz I feel like all of her songs have
- 1:56:48like a thousand listeners max. How did
- 1:56:50you find this? Is this your algorithm?
- 1:56:52Yeah, I was just like searching I was
- 1:56:54just searching a Smith song one day. I
- 1:56:56don't know. I'm a fan of that. You got
- 1:56:57to get anti-depressants, man. No. No.
- 1:57:00What are you talking about? When you're
- 1:57:01on the Smith side songs, do you not
- 1:57:03enjoy the music? Not gay. I need a lady.
- 1:57:06I need a lady to sing these songs. Do
- 1:57:09you guys have never stumbled upon a cool
- 1:57:11cover of a song you like on Spotify?
- 1:57:13Yeah. I feel like you're painting me for
- 1:57:15some kind of some kind of freak right
- 1:57:16now. Just by just by following the
- 1:57:19algorithm down a rabbit hole of whose
- 1:57:21experience I think we're all familiar
- 1:57:22with. I haven't follow the podcast. Get
- 1:57:25the [ __ ] out of here. Two to follow it
- 1:57:27to a capella though is is following it
- 1:57:29to extreme. Well, I didn't know it would
- 1:57:31be acappella. I just uh
- 1:57:33I feel like there are like like cool
- 1:57:35like a like a Petra Hayden is cool.
- 1:57:41Yeah. Bork did all a capella, you know.
- 1:57:43I love I I love that [ __ ] You know I
- 1:57:46love that [ __ ] Beetlejuice
- 1:57:50bork.
- 1:57:53The Swedish chef summons.
- 1:57:55Oh, okay. He goes like nice [ __ ]
- 1:57:58model. It's like bork bork instead of
- 1:58:00the honk. That's That one's for the real
- 1:58:02Beetlejuice heads. The sickos. The honk
- 1:58:04honk. Folks, we're at two hours. Okay. I
- 1:58:09think it'd be good to I think just keep
- 1:58:10it a nice clean two hours. Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:58:12Sound good? Yeah. Hell yeah, brother.
- 1:58:14Thanks. Thanks for coming on, gang. I
- 1:58:15feel like we we really revealed our true
- 1:58:18ac cappella opinions at the end. Let's
- 1:58:20Okay, so to I guess to wind it down,
- 1:58:22let's take a look at the art we've made
- 1:58:25and also I guess plugs. Freddy, find
- 1:58:28Freddy Chanel online. Google their name.
- 1:58:32Freddy Chanel. They're very funny. Yeah,
- 1:58:34they're funny. Yeah, very funny. And
- 1:58:35maybe have a cool web series coming.
- 1:58:38Yeah, they got a cool web series. Just
- 1:58:40keep the other coming. Okay. What do you
- 1:58:42What did you guys make?
- 1:58:44Do you have enough Did you make
- 1:58:46anything? Uh, let's start with Benny. I
- 1:58:49think my favorite one is the guy with
- 1:58:50the with the coming out. I think that
- 1:58:53does rock. That's a lot of fun. Sick.
- 1:58:55Yeah. I forgot. I honestly forget what
- 1:58:57the [ __ ] else I made. But yeah. What you
- 1:58:59got, Joe? I made like the old timey guy
- 1:59:01saying this is your captain speaking.
- 1:59:03Adam Sandler woman. And then Adam
- 1:59:05Sandler with the head of a basketball
- 1:59:08and his own head in the place of a
- 1:59:10basketball with the text Adam Sandler
- 1:59:13seriously.
- 1:59:14And then some little stick figures
- 1:59:16praying to Adam Sandler.
- 1:59:19Um I put William Defoe and Smokey the
- 1:59:24Bear on a bunch of spies from World War
- 1:59:27II. Oh, that's great. And then I just
- 1:59:28drew some some strange That's sick. Hey,
- 1:59:31thanks. Some freaky aliens and stuff.
- 1:59:33Freaky. I love to draw freaky freaky
- 1:59:35demon men.
- 1:59:38I did find your notebook once and knew
- 1:59:39instantly.
- 1:59:41Yeah, I know. Wasn't that a crazy thing?
- 1:59:43My name is not in there and you knew
- 1:59:45exactly who it was. No doubt. Uh I I uh
- 1:59:49I made this pipe cleaner ring. This pipe
- 1:59:53I uh I made this really nice um honey
- 1:59:55flavored stick of birds.
- 1:59:58So cool. Thank you. Yeah. Where'd you
- 2:00:00get that? I I personally churned it
- 2:00:03over. How Yeah. What's What is the
- 2:00:05production process for a chapstick?
- 2:00:07What's the verb for that? I churned it.
- 2:00:10Beef wax. Yeah. Yeah. I waxed it myself.
- 2:00:13Conjured. Yeah. Whenever I find a I
- 2:00:15churned it out of my wax hole. Why did I
- 2:00:17say that? I I apologize. Thanks for
- 2:00:20coming. Hey, thanks for coming on, gang.
- 2:00:21Whenever I find a comedian's notebook, I
- 2:00:23always like to write thoughts on the
- 2:00:24Jews somewhere in there. See, mine
- 2:00:26already has that all over my notebook.
- 2:00:30Yeah.
- 2:00:32And folks, that's our show. Where can
- 2:00:33people find you? Actually, Joe, real
- 2:00:35quick.
- 2:00:37Can I Can they follow you on uh
- 2:00:40Instagram, Twitter, still somehow, you
- 2:00:43know? Every time I ask for their plugs,
- 2:00:45it's just like look them up. You know
- 2:00:47what I mean? Yeah. It's just like you'll
- 2:00:48[ __ ] figure it out. Anyway, D, how
- 2:00:50about you? I was going to say, yeah, my
- 2:00:52my Instagram is is traumatized.
- 2:00:56I'm on there. Hey, that's what's that's
- 2:00:58what's up. you there. Good name. Thank
- 2:01:01you. Yeah. Derso. My name is Janice. Why
- 2:01:04I do AC capella Smith's covers. Look me
- 2:01:07up on Andrew Derso. Uh yeah, I'm there.
- 2:01:12Is your middle name underscore? No, it's
- 2:01:14not. Oh, wait. Uh on Instagram. Yes,
- 2:01:16that's the handle cuz Andrew Derso got
- 2:01:18to it. That's your That's your Yeah.
- 2:01:20What's his deal? Uh he's a uh Well,
- 2:01:23there are two. One does skate
- 2:01:25photography, another studies lizards. Uh
- 2:01:27I like Oh yeah. No, the Lizards guy.
- 2:01:30I've like almost a billion times like
- 2:01:32almost messaged him like, "Hey man,
- 2:01:34sorry. I hope I hope I haven't like
- 2:01:36ruined your SEO or like made it harder
- 2:01:39for you to get a job anywhere." Not that
- 2:01:40I've done anything like jocking on the
- 2:01:43internet. But you have all that anti-
- 2:01:44lizard stuff. Nice. Yeah. I'm like,
- 2:01:47"What if you're trying to get hired for
- 2:01:48like a lizard job and then like you
- 2:01:50search his name and it's like me talking
- 2:01:52about my uh my my bits in a standup ad."
- 2:01:56those coldblooded freaks. This I love
- 2:01:59lizards. I'm extremely pro lizards. When
- 2:02:01I did petting zoo, I chose a lizard. Oh
- 2:02:04yeah. Yeah. Same [ __ ] There's another
- 2:02:07Benny Felman who does stand up in San
- 2:02:09Francisco and people will be in San
- 2:02:11Francisco and be like, "Dude, are you
- 2:02:12here doing a show?" And I'm like, "Nope,
- 2:02:14it's a different guy. You should have
- 2:02:16stuck with comedian Benny."
- 2:02:19And that's our show.
