Latest / THE DAILY BRIEF / 'Let's go, Little Donnie!' Maine Democrat taunts Trump with invite to 'help' Susan Collins
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: We are back live with a very, very, very fired
- 0:04Speaker 1: up crowd at Rigby.
- 0:05Speaker 2: Yard in Portland, Maine. The city where Troy Jackson and
- 0:09Speaker 2: Susan Collins just wrapped up their first debate. And what
- 0:12Speaker 2: is shaping up to be one of the most important
- 0:15Speaker 2: Senate races in the country? I'm going to just keep
- 0:17Speaker 2: restating that for you. I also noted earlier, but just
- 0:20Speaker 2: to remind you, people have started voting here. People started
- 0:22Speaker 2: voting yesterday. They were early voting yesterday. So things are happening.
- 0:26Speaker 2: And while the two were only, there were only two
- 0:28Speaker 2: podiums on the debate stage yesterday, A third name, you
- 0:31Speaker 2: know who it was, was ever present tonight, as he
- 0:34Speaker 2: always is, as he likes to be, I think, Donald Trump.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Senator Collins, I do want to ask, we've heard Donald
- 0:41Speaker 3: Trump's name several times here. So let me ask you directly.
- 0:44Speaker 3: President Trump this week said that he might actually visit Maine.
- 0:47Speaker 3: Will you stand with him if he does?
- 0:49Speaker 4: I don't think that President Trump is going to come
- 0:53Speaker 4: to Maine. He's talking about going to a lot of
- 0:56Speaker 4: different states. I've heard nothing from his office. And I'm
- 1:02Speaker 4: not exactly his favorite senator.
- 1:06Speaker 3: So yes or no? Do you have a yes or
- 1:08Speaker 3: no to that?
- 1:08Speaker 4: I would say that he is not coming to Maine.
- 1:10Speaker 3: Okay, fair enough.
- 1:14Speaker 2: Joining me now is the man of the hour, Democratic
- 1:16Speaker 2: nominee for Senate in the great state of Maine.
- 1:18Speaker 3: I love it here.
- 1:19Speaker 2: I've been here for two days, Troy Jackson. Thank you
- 1:22Speaker 2: for being here and taking that. And I know you've
- 1:23Speaker 2: had a hell of a day already, so I appreciate
- 1:25Speaker 2: you taking the time.
- 1:26Speaker 3: Well, it's great to be with you.
- 1:27Speaker 5: I mean, obviously, I really enjoy your show, and any
- 1:29Speaker 5: chance I get to get on, I'm going to.
- 1:31Speaker 3: Well, I'm glad you're here. We came to you this time.
- 1:34Speaker 2: So to catch people up, I mean, Trump told reporters,
- 1:37Speaker 2: people watching probably know this, he mused about coming to Maine.
- 1:40Speaker 2: Susan Collins said she hadn't heard from him. She said
- 1:43Speaker 2: she didn't think he was going to come. I kind
- 1:45Speaker 2: of wonder in moments like this if, like, your campaign
- 1:48Speaker 2: might offer to pay for his travel to.
- 1:50Speaker 3: The state of Maine.
- 1:52Speaker 5: Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, I definitely think that he wants
- 1:55Speaker 5: to come. I mean, I don't know if they're going
- 1:57Speaker 5: to scream bloody murder to keep him away. But I mean,
- 2:00Speaker 5: he wants his rubber stamp, Susan Collins, to win this election.
- 2:04Speaker 5: So she'll keep doing tax cuts, you know, keep doing
- 2:07Speaker 5: everything that the billionaire class wants, voting with him 96
- 2:10Speaker 5: percent of the time. I mean, I'm sure he wants
- 2:13Speaker 5: to try and come and save the election for her.
- 2:14Speaker 5: But I think people in Maine know that they've gone
- 2:17Speaker 5: too far and it's time for a big change that
- 2:19Speaker 5: we can get government back in a way that we're
- 2:20Speaker 5: proud of.
- 2:21Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:21Speaker 2: So if you're watching Donald Trump, if you see this clip,
- 2:24Speaker 2: it's your airfare.
- 2:25Speaker 6: It's covered.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Air Force One travel. Detroit Jackson campaign. Let's go, little Donnie.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Let's go, little Donnie.
- 2:32Speaker 6: All right.
- 2:32Speaker 1: That's an invite.
- 2:37Speaker 3: So we played this earlier. We played this clip earlier.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Tonight, you asked Senator Collins if she would admit that
- 2:44Speaker 2: she was wrong to have voted for Brett Kavanaugh because
- 2:46Speaker 2: that vote cleared the way for the Supreme Court to
- 2:48Speaker 2: overturn Roe v.
- 2:49Speaker 6: Wade.
- 2:49Speaker 2: You did an entire event about this in Bath that
- 2:52Speaker 2: I went as well, too. And Senator Collins made clear
- 2:56Speaker 2: that she didn't regret the vote. She's never said she
- 2:58Speaker 2: regret the vote. And you used the question as an
- 3:01Speaker 2: opportunity to attack you on abortion rights. What did you
- 3:05Speaker 2: make of that whole exchange there?
- 3:07Speaker 5: Well, I mean, she wanted to turn it around because
- 3:09Speaker 5: she knows that her record has gotten awful on this.
- 3:13Speaker 5: I don't know that Susan Collins ever really cared to
- 3:15Speaker 5: be for a woman's right to choose. I mean, we
- 3:18Speaker 5: had Roe versus Wade, so it was easy, convenient for
- 3:21Speaker 5: her to be able to say that. But she's put
- 3:23Speaker 5: 60 judges, anti-abortion judges, onto the bench. Uh, she definitely
- 3:28Speaker 5: was the deciding vote for Kavanaugh. And I think what
- 3:31Speaker 5: she was trying to obviously get back to was that,
- 3:33Speaker 5: you know, years ago, I wasn't as clear on this issue. Uh,
- 3:38Speaker 5: And over time, I started listening to a lot of people,
- 3:40Speaker 5: some of them in this room, about how reproductive rights
- 3:45Speaker 5: is health care. And I've always believed that we should
- 3:47Speaker 5: have health care. And so after a while, it became
- 3:50Speaker 5: very clear to me that I was wrong. And, you know,
- 3:52Speaker 5: I'm okay with saying I'm wrong. You know, I mean,
- 3:54Speaker 5: obviously it doesn't give me great pleasure or anything like that.
- 3:57Speaker 5: But you've seen Susan Collins tonight. I mean, she won't
- 4:00Speaker 5: say that she's wrong.
- 4:02Speaker 3: She was wrong. I mean, 22 states have lost reproductive rights.
- 4:06Speaker 5: And in Maine, if we hadn't had a strong legislature
- 4:08Speaker 5: and a strong governor, we'd have been in trouble here too.
- 4:12Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you about something you said, and
- 4:13Speaker 2: you've said this before, but part of Susan Collins' pitch
- 4:16Speaker 2: is that she can, you know, be an effective check
- 4:19Speaker 2: on Donald Trump, that she can call him or she
- 4:21Speaker 2: can call his administration and get things done. We hear
- 4:24Speaker 2: that argument. I'm not validating it, but that's what she says, right?
- 4:28Speaker 2: But tonight you said, you described her this way. She's
- 4:30Speaker 2: like an arsonist who helps set the fire, and now
- 4:33Speaker 2: she wants credit for bringing a cup of water to
- 4:36Speaker 2: put it out. It's quite a visual.
- 4:41Speaker 4: People like that analogy here.
- 4:44Speaker 2: Tell me more about what you mean by that.
- 4:46Speaker 5: Well, I mean, you know, with the big bogus bill,
- 4:49Speaker 5: you know, we're losing $ 3 billion in health care.
- 4:52Speaker 3: We're losing SNAP benefits. We're losing heating assistance. I mean,
- 4:55Speaker 3: we're losing so much.
- 4:56Speaker 5: And she wants to crow about the fact that she
- 4:59Speaker 5: advanced the bill so she could get a $ 190 million
- 5:03Speaker 5: rural health care fund. Well, that's a pittance to what
- 5:05Speaker 5: we're losing. I mean, if she had done nothing, we'd
- 5:07Speaker 5: have been better off. And that's exactly what I meant
- 5:10Speaker 5: was that, you know, she could have stopped that if
- 5:12Speaker 5: she really cared about it. But she doesn't. I mean,
- 5:15Speaker 5: she wants to do whatever Donald Trump wants. And right
- 5:17Speaker 5: now we have birth centers closing, one hospital. I mean,
- 5:21Speaker 5: you know, the health care industry knows they're in trouble
- 5:23Speaker 5: because of that vote. And we're watching our health care
- 5:26Speaker 5: system here in Maine crash so that Elon Musk could
- 5:29Speaker 5: have more money. And it just I can't understand how
- 5:33Speaker 5: anyone in their right mind can can actually defend that vote.
- 5:37Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it seems to me, she has quite a,
- 5:40Speaker 2: it's a tangled argument.
- 5:41Speaker 3: I'm going to call it a tangled argument a bit. Well,
- 5:44Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 5:44Speaker 5: I mean, it's trading our health care for Elon Musk
- 5:47Speaker 5: getting tax cuts. For me, it's pretty clear what went on,
- 5:51Speaker 5: and it really pisses me off.
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yeah, I think people see that. It pisses a lot
- 5:56Speaker 2: of people off in this country.
- 5:57Speaker 7: Let me ask you.
- 6:02Speaker 3: About another....
- 6:04Speaker 2: Another thing she tried to do in this debate, which
- 6:06Speaker 2: was to at one point in the debate, she basically
- 6:10Speaker 2: tried to make the argument that she was as supportive
- 6:14Speaker 2: of Joe Biden's agenda and policies as she has been
- 6:17Speaker 2: of Donald Trump. That is I don't I'm well, what
- 6:21Speaker 2: did you make of that.
- 6:22Speaker 3: When she was trying to make that argument?
- 6:24Speaker 5: There were some real zingers in there that I had
- 6:26Speaker 5: a hard time keeping up with because at one point
- 6:29Speaker 5: she said that it was my fault that electricity costs
- 6:32Speaker 5: were higher, but then she agreed that we had to
- 6:34Speaker 5: do something to get our energy under control, which drives
- 6:38Speaker 5: our energy prices.
- 6:40Speaker 3: I mean, this is classic Susan Collins.
- 6:43Speaker 5: I mean, she wants to be for everything until it
- 6:46Speaker 5: becomes hard, and then she's not for it.
- 6:48Speaker 3: I mean, she's all over the place. I mean, you
- 6:50Speaker 3: heard her tonight. voted for Iran, voted against Iran.
- 6:53Speaker 5: I mean, she's classic about trying to be everything but
- 6:57Speaker 5: never actually being anything for anyone.
- 7:00Speaker 3: Let me ask you something.
- 7:02Speaker 2: We have an MSNOW membership that we just started. We
- 7:04Speaker 2: have a bunch of great members out there. A bunch
- 7:06Speaker 2: of them sent me questions. So I want to give
- 7:08Speaker 2: them an opportunity to ask you a question.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I'm going to ask it for them.
- 7:11Speaker 2: So some of our MSNOW members, a member with the
- 7:14Speaker 2: username JMT, hello JMT out there, asked how much of
- 7:18Speaker 2: the Democratic campaigning mentions Collins' corruption case and are voters
- 7:21Speaker 2: talking about it? This is referring to the ProPublica reporting,
- 7:24Speaker 2: of course, about a bribery probe probe into Susan Collins'
- 7:27Speaker 2: interactions with a defense contractor. She denies all wrongdoing. Are
- 7:31Speaker 2: Maine voters talking about this? Is this something that's breaking through?
- 7:35Speaker 2: What if, I mean, you grew up in politics here,
- 7:37Speaker 2: you grew up here. What do you wish people understood
- 7:40Speaker 2: about that story?
- 7:42Speaker 3: Well, I mean, they are talking about it.
- 7:44Speaker 5: I mean, I think there's a lot of people that
- 7:46Speaker 5: thinks that from years ago with Senator Collins to now,
- 7:49Speaker 5: there's been a massive switch. She is voting with Donald Trump.
- 7:54Speaker 5: She seems very scared to push back against him. I mean,
- 7:57Speaker 5: you know, very concerned all the time. And I think
- 8:01Speaker 5: that that ProPublica investigation showed us why. I mean, the
- 8:07Speaker 5: FBI was circling around They, you know, they've got receipts.
- 8:11Speaker 5: They've got, you know, checks that went to her pack
- 8:14Speaker 5: and they were investigated. And whenever Donald Trump came back in,
- 8:19Speaker 5: he got rid of the investigation.
- 8:22Speaker 3: And that to me is why he owns her now.
- 8:25Speaker 5: She she did his bidding or she's doing his bidding
- 8:28Speaker 5: because he helped her.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Get out of that. Because of that, that she's loyal
- 8:31Speaker 3: to him. I know.
- 8:33Speaker 5: I mean, I think that she was in a situation
- 8:36Speaker 5: where he made it go away for her, and I
- 8:38Speaker 5: think that's part of the reason why she supports him
- 8:41Speaker 5: 96% of the time. Because her support is not helping Mainers,
- 8:45Speaker 5: that's for damn sure.
- 8:47Speaker 2: All right, we're going to go to some main voters
- 8:49Speaker 2: who we actually want to hear from. You've been talking
- 8:51Speaker 2: to a lot of them. Doris Holland, hello.
- 8:52Speaker 3: How are you?
- 8:53Speaker 2: Thank you for being here. I should note, you're a
- 8:55Speaker 2: retired school bus driver.
- 8:57Speaker 3: I am. Well, go ahead, Doris. We'd love to have
- 9:00Speaker 3: your question.
- 9:00Speaker 6: I've been retired from being a school bus driver for
- 9:04Speaker 6: 22 years. But my greatest joy was raising my family.
- 9:08Speaker 6: I have four boys and a girl. I have a daughter.
- 9:13Speaker 3: I have a granddaughter.
- 9:14Speaker 6: And I have a great-granddaughter. And it really, really, I
- 9:18Speaker 6: wanted to say concerns me, but.
- 9:23Speaker 2: It gets a laugh in this state when you say
- 9:25Speaker 2: concerns me.
- 9:26Speaker 3: I can tell people, yes.
- 9:27Speaker 6: It really bothers me to think because I was raised
- 9:32Speaker 6: before the borough era. I know the damage that was
- 9:36Speaker 6: done to families. I know people that died because someone
- 9:40Speaker 6: made a mistake. I mean, if a girl makes a mistake,
- 9:44Speaker 6: does she deserve the rest of her life? I mean,
- 9:47Speaker 6: it just was impossible. They were going into alleys to
- 9:50Speaker 6: get abortions. They were trying to do it themselves. And
- 9:55Speaker 6: I pray that this will change. I pray that people
- 9:58Speaker 6: will finally look at people. and think, you know, this.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Is a life, the life that they lost.
- 10:06Speaker 6: We lost hundreds of thousands of girls back then for
- 10:10Speaker 6: a small mistake.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Well, a mistake.
- 10:13Speaker 2: And you have somebody sitting here who could be sitting
- 10:15Speaker 2: in the Senate who has been a defender for a
- 10:18Speaker 2: long time.
- 10:19Speaker 1: What would you like to know from him?
- 10:21Speaker 6: Well, one of the things I'd like to know is
- 10:24Speaker 6: simply that if this comes up and if people decide
- 10:31Speaker 6: that Roe should come back, would you fight for it?
- 10:36Speaker 3: Yeah, absolutely. I mean, you know, I've been fighting for
- 10:40Speaker 3: that for decades.
- 10:41Speaker 5: You know, more than a decade now, I mean, I
- 10:44Speaker 5: think I'm very proud that we have some of the
- 10:46Speaker 5: most progressive reproductive rights bills in the country. We made
- 10:51Speaker 5: sure that low-income women had access under main care, and
- 10:55Speaker 5: I will. I mean, I can promise you that I'm
- 10:57Speaker 5: not going to turn my back on that, and I'm
- 10:59Speaker 5: not going to put another Supreme Court justice on like
- 11:04Speaker 5: Brett Kavanaugh. I'll make damn sure that that's a question
- 11:07Speaker 5: that I'll ask that Senator Collins seems to have given
- 11:10Speaker 5: up on.
- 11:11Speaker 2: You can certainly ask that question. And it's so important
- 11:14Speaker 2: to hear from people like Doris. People think it's only
- 11:16Speaker 2: people who are of reproductive age who care about this issue.
- 11:20Speaker 2: But so many people, they care about it for their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, everyone.
- 11:23Speaker 3: All right.
- 11:23Speaker 2: Our next question is from Devin Campbell, a ground fisherman.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Go ahead, Devin.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:28Speaker 7: My question, Troy, is, you know, in the last two years,
- 11:32Speaker 7: you know, we've faced a lot of setbacks with, you know,
- 11:34Speaker 7: diesel price and that kind of stuff. But we've also
- 11:36Speaker 7: made some gains in the fishing industry. with the fisheries
- 11:41Speaker 7: agency and the USDA Office of Seafood, which we've been
- 11:44Speaker 7: asking for for 30 years.
- 11:47Speaker 3: What will you do to build on that when you're
- 11:49Speaker 3: in the Senate?
- 11:51Speaker 5: I think this whole thing with the fishing industry in Maine,
- 11:55Speaker 5: we need resources. We need resources in there to get
- 11:57Speaker 5: the data to make sure that we can make arguments.
- 12:01Speaker 3: That support the fishing industry.
- 12:04Speaker 5: I think getting more resources into the agency to get
- 12:08Speaker 5: that is important.
- 12:09Speaker 3: I also want to make sure that you brought it up,
- 12:12Speaker 3: but You.
- 12:13Speaker 5: Know, fuel prices, I know boats like yours, how much
- 12:16Speaker 5: diesel that uses. You know, in the logging industry that
- 12:19Speaker 5: I come from, I mean, people are going to start
- 12:21Speaker 5: losing their business. I mean, this won't continue much longer,
- 12:24Speaker 5: and they'll lose their homes because.
- 12:25Speaker 3: They're tied into this. You know, we've got to get
- 12:28Speaker 3: out of Iran.
- 12:28Speaker 5: We've got to get fuel prices back down.
- 12:31Speaker 3: But I think to answer your question, you.
- 12:33Speaker 5: Know, more resources so we get the real data that
- 12:36Speaker 5: we can make the arguments and find out how we.
- 12:38Speaker 3: Can make the fishing industry even better. Hey, it's Rachel.
- 12:41Speaker 1: I am so glad to see you at the end
- 12:42Speaker 1: of that clip because this is where I get to
- 12:44Speaker 1: tell you about a new way to watch all our
- 12:47Speaker 1: clips and all of our shows and everything on MS
- 12:50Speaker 1: Now on your phone or your tablet or your laptop.
- 12:53Speaker 1: You can watch things live or recorded. Plus, you can

- 13:06Speaker 2: Thanks.
