- 0:00SPEAKER_00: What is your billboard saying today?
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: Now, I'm not talking about the one on the highway.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about the one people read every time they interact with us because
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: the truth is our actions are our marketing.
- 0:17SPEAKER_00: Today, we're in Proverbs 1530 because it's the 15th day of the month.
- 0:29SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee with Ernie,
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: where a proverb a day keeps stinking thinking at bay.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: I'm Ernie Lansford, and each day we open the book of proverbs that matches the day of the month.
- 0:44SPEAKER_00: And ask,
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: what's it saying to us as marketplace leaders,
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: as customer success masters, co-workers, and culture shapers?
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: That's hard to say, culture shapers.
- 0:58SPEAKER_00: So grab your coffee and let's reflect on today's Proverbs.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: We're reading from chapter 15, verse 30 from the NIV, the New International Version.
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: Quote, Light in a messenger's eyes bring joy to the heart,
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: and good news gives health to the bone.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: You know, that's more than poetry.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Frankly, that's leadership advice.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: It's a reminder that our presence,
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: our tone,
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: our words,
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: our body language,
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: even the facial expressions can either uplift or deflate the people we serve.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: Ronald Reagan, the president back in the 80s, wore a lot of hats in his lifetime.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: He was an actor.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: He was a governor.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: He was the president of the Actors Guild.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: He was also president of the United States,
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: which meant he was really the leader of the free world.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: But what was one of his most powerful traits?
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Well, he knew how to make people feel seen.
- 2:11SPEAKER_00: And one of his trademarks was writing handwritten thank you notes,
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: not printed, not outsourced, handwritten.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: He wrote them to staff, he wrote them to friends, and to those who served or supported him.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: It was a small,
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: thoughtful gesture that frankly created huge ripple effects of joy,
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: loyalty, and human connection.
- 2:40SPEAKER_00: And you know something?
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: When President Reagan left office, his approval rating was 66%.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: That's not just policy.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: That's personal influence.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Frankly, from my perspective, that's Proverbs 15, 30 in action.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: Light in the eyes, good news in the words, healing in the spirit.
- 3:04SPEAKER_00: So here's a challenge to think about today before noon,
- 3:10SPEAKER_00: if you're listening to this in the morning, or before the end of the day.
- 3:14SPEAKER_00: Let's put it that way.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Thank someone who is serving you.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Now, it could be the cashier at the grocery store or at the drugstore.
- 3:25SPEAKER_00: It could be the convenience store, the barista, a delivery driver, a customer support rep.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: Look them in the eye.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: Use their name if you can,
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: and usually their name is on a badge up on their chest,
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: and say something like,
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: well, thank you for coming into work today to serve us,
- 3:51SPEAKER_00: the people in this building.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I know you could have rolled over and stayed in bed, but you know something?
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: You showed up, and I frankly appreciate that.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Now watch what happens.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I speak from experience.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: I've done this.
- 4:08SPEAKER_00: And I've had people almost come to tears and want to come around the counter
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: to hug me and say, you just don't know how much that means to me.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: It's just a simple thing.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: You'll see their face light up.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: You just gave them Proverbs 30 in action.
- 4:29SPEAKER_00: And now, once again, from my perspective, that's real marketing.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: The kind that doesn't live in a campaign, but in connection.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: You're building relationships.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: You're building partnerships.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: That brings us to today's customer success code.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Gratitude is one of the most potent forms of marketing.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: It turns moments into memories and customers into partners.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: So what are action points that can turn our gratitude into influence?
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Well, let's make it real.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Action point number one, express gratitude thoughtfully.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: You know, no auto pins, truthfully.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: Be personal, be specific and sincere.
- 5:18SPEAKER_00: Not a canned thanks, but a meaningful moment.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: One of the things that helped me when I was a young pavement pounder back in
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: the 70s,
- 5:29SPEAKER_00: In the back floorboard of my car, I carried a shoebox full of thank you cards.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: And sometimes they were comical.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: There was a company out of Asheville, North Carolina called Harrison Printing.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: They're out of business now.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: But they used to make some really cartoon-type funny things.
- 5:52SPEAKER_00: But expressive thank you cards.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: And I bought those and I would,
- 5:58SPEAKER_00: inside I would write something meaningful about the last interaction.
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: And I made a habit of after I left a person's business,
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: I sat in my car and before I put it in gear,
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: I wrote that note out and I had a roll of stamps and And this is before they had
- 6:22SPEAKER_00: the self-adhesive stamps.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: You had to lick those dudes.
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: And then back in those days, there was usually a mailbox on just about every other corner.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: And if you got it in there by 5 p.m. that day, it was delivered the next day.
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: I would come back on a next visit,
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: and I would see my cards pinned to the bulletin board in the break room or
- 6:46SPEAKER_00: the kitchen.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: It really...
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Action point number two is use names.
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: People feel seen when they hear their name.
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: It's the smallest thing you can do.
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Keep in mind,
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: most people have a name tag and all you have to do is say,
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: well, thank you, Susan, for coming in today.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Susan, for serving me.
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Action point number three is As I said earlier,
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: send a thank you message to someone who helped you recently.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: You don't have to be long.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: Just be honest.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Action point number four, let your face reflect joy.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: Be aware of your presence.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Let the light in your eyes be the good news someone needed.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Every one of us is walking around with a billboard.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Let yours reflect Christ, compassion, and clarity of purpose.
- 7:51SPEAKER_00: Father, thank you for the joy and healing power found in kind words and thankful,
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: grateful hearts.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Please help us see those around us, truly see them, and respond with sincerity and humility.
- 8:10SPEAKER_00: May our gratitude reflect your goodness and May our actions preach louder
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: than any words in marketing we could ever say.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: In Jesus' name, amen.
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: Well,
- 8:25SPEAKER_00: thank you for joining me for today's episode of Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: with Ernie.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: I do this to share my real-life experience in the marketplace for over 60 years
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: and what I call a Marketplace leadership is what a lot of people write about,
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: but I call marketplace leadership customer success mastery.
- 8:50SPEAKER_00: And I have found that using the book of Proverbs,
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: the chapter that matches the day of the month,
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I've done that since 1988, more days than not.
- 9:03SPEAKER_00: And when I study versus just read,
- 9:07SPEAKER_00: when I study,
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Scriptures and verses will come at me,
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: and I have to think that that's from the Holy Spirit,
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: that this is how you can solve this problem you're facing or this challenge
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: or how you can expand in the marketplace.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: And I would write those down, and I've got three Bibles with the margins filled with notes.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: I'm just sharing with you my experience and how I've applied God's wisdom.
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: I
- 9:45SPEAKER_00: speak numbers 624-26 over you.
- 9:49SPEAKER_00: May the Lord bless you and protect you.
- 9:52SPEAKER_00: May the Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: And may the Lord look with favor on you and give you peace.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: If this message has been beneficial to you, please share it.
- 10:07SPEAKER_00: That's how we get the word out.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: It's just sharing news that is beneficial.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: I'm not doing any self-promotion marketing.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: I did that in corporate.
- 10:17SPEAKER_00: I'm not doing that anymore.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: So please share it and ask the one you share it with,
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: if they enjoyed it or feel it's beneficial, ask them to share it as well.
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: I'll leave you with this.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Success is temporal.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: Adding significance to others is infinite.
- 10:40SPEAKER_00: Let's meet again on Marketplace Proverbs and Coffee with Ernie.
