Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, earlier this morning we started getting calls here at
- 0:03Speaker 1: the station about people escaping Howard Springs quarantine facility, and
- 0:07Speaker 1: we can now confirm that that police investigations underway following
- 0:11Speaker 1: reports of several people absconding in the early hours of
- 0:14Speaker 1: this morning. The Territory Police are searching for three people
- 0:18Speaker 1: who escaped from the Center for National Resilience. They say
- 0:22Speaker 1: at four forty this morning, it was reported that three
- 0:25Speaker 1: people from the center scaled the fence and fled the area.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Now police are currently well confirming the absconder's identities along
- 0:34Speaker 1: with those staff from the Center for National Resilience. Joining
- 0:37Speaker 1: us on the line right now is Kezia Puric, the
- 0:40Speaker 1: Independent member for Goida.
- 0:41Speaker 2: Good morning, Kezier, Oh.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Good morning, Katie. Yes, I believe that three of the
- 0:46Speaker 3: young people from the center have absconded. I think it's
- 0:50Speaker 3: the word which is not good.
- 0:52Speaker 2: No, it's not good.
- 0:54Speaker 1: What is I know you're in parliament right now, but
- 0:56Speaker 1: what is the feeling from those that live in the
- 0:58Speaker 1: rural area at this point.
- 1:00Speaker 3: Well, they're pretty frustrated, you know, look, of course, and disappointed.
- 1:04Speaker 3: Of course, no one would want to be put away
- 1:07Speaker 3: for two weeks. You know, without much fun and joy,
- 1:10Speaker 3: and you know you've got to put a television if
- 1:12Speaker 3: that's about it, and you know, even the adults you
- 1:14Speaker 3: want to get out there, but you know, if something
- 1:16Speaker 3: has to be done for the for the benefit of
- 1:18Speaker 3: the whole community, and the fact that these young people
- 1:21Speaker 3: are just you know, I think about sixteen or something,
- 1:23Speaker 3: you know, blatantly not thinking about anyone other than himselves.
- 1:26Speaker 3: It's just disappointing. And I don't think we can blame
- 1:29Speaker 3: the center specifically. I don't think we need to put
- 1:31Speaker 3: bar wire up and everything that's just been suggested. I mean,
- 1:34Speaker 3: that's not going to that's not going to solve the problem.
- 1:36Speaker 3: The problem is they are taken there for their own self,
- 1:40Speaker 3: for their own benefits, for their health, benefits of their
- 1:43Speaker 3: social well being, and that then the social and the
- 1:44Speaker 3: safety of their community, their fam and members CA.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yeah, we've not been told at this point in time
- 1:51Speaker 1: the ages or anything of those people who have absconded.
- 1:54Speaker 2: It sounds like you might have some further info.
- 1:57Speaker 3: Well, I best I understand that they're sort of low team,
- 2:00Speaker 3: so I don't know where they'll go. I mean, if
- 2:04Speaker 3: I was a teenager and I've been getting out of
- 2:05Speaker 3: hot boarding school. I'd make a bee line with a
- 2:08Speaker 3: bright light pat. So I'm sure the police have got
- 2:10Speaker 3: their intel and they'll be working on it as we
- 2:12Speaker 3: speak to them up and take them back.
- 2:15Speaker 1: What about this morning in terms of getting into the city,
- 2:18Speaker 1: I know that that cars are obviously being stopped at
- 2:21Speaker 1: a roadblock and some of those cars being searched.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Yeah, that did happen, and it was happening probably it's
- 2:27Speaker 3: probably not happening so much now. But the intersection of
- 2:31Speaker 3: Whitewood Road which comes off the sorry, How's things Road
- 2:35Speaker 3: which comes off the highway and then what would road
- 2:37Speaker 3: goes to the shops, they were stopping cars there and
- 2:40Speaker 3: checking them to see you know, that's gone being papish
- 2:43Speaker 3: to ride with someone some kind person he said, oh ea,
- 2:46Speaker 3: I needs need to ride to town. But I understand
- 2:48Speaker 3: the traffic flow now because I was talking to someone
- 2:50Speaker 3: out there. So you know, the police are just doing
- 2:53Speaker 3: what they're doing, trying to find them, and that was
- 2:54Speaker 3: just one avenue of action to try and find these
- 2:57Speaker 3: young people because I don't know what their data is
- 3:00Speaker 3: and no one else does, and that's what the concern is.
- 3:02Speaker 3: And I just hope that they have a negative and
- 3:05Speaker 3: a dis to their well being and sitting out for
- 3:07Speaker 3: two weeks.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely, I mean that's the worry at this point
- 3:10Speaker 1: in time, is that we don't actually know whether they're
- 3:13Speaker 1: COVID positive or not. We're all hoping to find out
- 3:16Speaker 1: some further details sooner rather than later. So there's you know,
- 3:20Speaker 1: if it's all good, we don't need to worry.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I think we'll find either the Health Minister or the
- 3:24Speaker 3: policemmisis will probably come out very soon and to just
- 3:27Speaker 3: give a status report, just to bring some calm and
- 3:29Speaker 3: calm to the community so that it doesn't take off
- 3:32Speaker 3: like a wildfire that's balancing trouble, which I don't believe
- 3:35Speaker 3: it would be. But let's wait and see what the
- 3:37Speaker 3: authorities have to.
- 3:38Speaker 2: Say now, Kezier.
- 3:39Speaker 1: We know that Parliament is sitting at the moment, and
- 3:42Speaker 1: obviously we learned yesterday that those the public gallery would
- 3:46Speaker 1: not be opened, the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly making
- 3:49Speaker 1: the decision to ban the public from watching in the
- 3:52Speaker 1: chamber for the rest of sittings after she was made
- 3:54Speaker 1: aware of intelligence from the Northern Territory Police.
- 3:57Speaker 2: A bit of a worry.
- 4:00Speaker 3: Well, it's only a way in so much as if
- 4:03Speaker 3: the police have got intelligence, then there is something there
- 4:06Speaker 3: that one must consider seriously. Now I pointed out to
- 4:09Speaker 3: someone this morning, open galleries and apartment are not a right.
- 4:13Speaker 3: It's not a right for people to come in and
- 4:15Speaker 3: have the luxury of sitting in the gallery and watching parliament.
- 4:18Speaker 3: It's a privilege. So it's not the first time galleries
- 4:22Speaker 3: have been shut here. I shut the galleries for different
- 4:24Speaker 3: reasons or clear the galleries when there are people in
- 4:26Speaker 3: there protesting, and it was inappropriate. So I don't think
- 4:29Speaker 3: people should get to hang up on you know, the
- 4:31Speaker 3: speaker is saying, oh, the galleries are close. The speaker
- 4:33Speaker 3: has taken the sound advice from the police that there
- 4:36Speaker 3: are some risks and the one way to manic this risk,
- 4:39Speaker 3: if not eliminated, is to close the public galleries. People
- 4:42Speaker 3: can still see parliament on the internet stream. There's big
- 4:47Speaker 3: screens in the in the usually in the main hall
- 4:49Speaker 3: where they can watch, or I can just ring one
- 4:51Speaker 3: of their local members to find out what's going on,
- 4:53Speaker 3: if that's what they're so interested in. I mean, let's
- 4:56Speaker 3: be honest, Katie. When these galleys are open, Depending on
- 4:59Speaker 3: the on the debate, A dozen or so people top
- 5:03Speaker 3: the school goods.
- 5:05Speaker 2: I was going to say, they don't get that full,
- 5:06Speaker 2: do they Easier?
- 5:07Speaker 3: No, they don't such a big interest in them. What
- 5:10Speaker 3: it would have been before today?
- 5:12Speaker 1: Hey, before I let you go, Keasier, I am keen
- 5:14Speaker 1: to just ask you. On Friday, you and I obviously
- 5:17Speaker 1: on the week that was you were discussing the fact
- 5:20Speaker 1: that you're a bit concerned about the vaccine numbers in
- 5:22Speaker 1: the rural area and we're questioning how that info was
- 5:25Speaker 1: being gathered.
- 5:26Speaker 2: Have you had much insight yet?
- 5:29Speaker 3: No? I have written for Health Minister. What it is, Katie,
- 5:31Speaker 3: is your vaccination status is based and used for your
- 5:35Speaker 3: Medicare card. Now your Medicare card comes to your mailing address.
- 5:40Speaker 3: And my mailing address is well nearly and my post
- 5:43Speaker 3: code is zero two one. So what I'm asking that
- 5:46Speaker 3: ministries has there been a miscalculation of the number of
- 5:50Speaker 3: rural people who are vaccinated but their mailing address and
- 5:54Speaker 3: therefore the registration of the vaccination status is not in
- 5:57Speaker 3: the victual council boundaries. So most people in the rural
- 6:02Speaker 3: air don't. There's no mail service, all right, it's rule.
- 6:04Speaker 3: So I've got a letter box at an urban setting,
- 6:07Speaker 3: whether it's the GPO Palmerston were nearly like myself, or
- 6:11Speaker 3: some other urban setting like how it springs and they
- 6:13Speaker 3: live at Elizason Valley for example. So I've asked the
- 6:16Speaker 3: minister because I don't as I said to you, I
- 6:19Speaker 3: don't accept and I don't believe that the Rule Air
- 6:22Speaker 3: vaccination status is as low as what they're saying, and
- 6:25Speaker 3: that is probably the reason. The other reason is some
- 6:27Speaker 3: of the residents in the Rule Air have a postcode
- 6:30Speaker 3: zero eight double two, which means their mail goes to
- 6:33Speaker 3: a mail bag. So you know, it just could be
- 6:36Speaker 3: one of those glipses in the system that people didn't
- 6:39Speaker 3: know about. So I've asked me and I'll chase up
- 6:42Speaker 3: today during parlent to say we need to get disordered
- 6:45Speaker 3: because people want a home quarantine in digital Council boundaries.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So if there's a glitch in the system, we then
- 6:51Speaker 3: need to work it out. Well, ma't know how it
- 6:53Speaker 3: can be addressed, but I'm going to chase the ministerin
- 6:55Speaker 3: today this type of residence who wanted home.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Quarantine, wells let us know how you go. We are
- 7:01Speaker 1: going to have to leave it there. Always good to
- 7:03Speaker 1: catch up with you thanks so much for your time today.
- 7:06Speaker 2: Thank you
