- 1:35Speaker 1: Part one The Woods Scene one the woods adjoining the
- 1:42Speaker 1: Big Lake near Verdigree, Switch, Indian Territory, nineteen oh six.
- 1:48Speaker 1: It is spring vines creep on the trees, just putting
- 1:52Speaker 1: out their green. The ground is soft with dead leaves,
- 1:57Speaker 1: among which grow the earliest flowers. A fallen log lies
- 2:02Speaker 1: in a tangle of last year's briars. It is the
- 2:06Speaker 1: grayness of morning. Keller is beginning to show in the
- 2:10Speaker 1: east where the lake lies, and as the light grows,
- 2:14Speaker 1: the lake shines through the leaves. Lloyd and Betty come
- 2:18Speaker 1: from the left, softly over the matted earth. They are
- 2:23Speaker 1: very young. Lloyd is tall, dark, He has black hair.
- 2:28Speaker 1: His face is sensitive. He wears rough shoes, dark trousers
- 2:33Speaker 1: and a pale blue shirt. Betty's hair is yellow. She
- 2:37Speaker 1: has let it down. It frames her white, delicate face.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Her dress is a coarse, dark slip.
- 2:46Speaker 3: It's Ben's a gray.
- 2:48Speaker 2: It's getting lighter.
- 2:50Speaker 3: It's Ben's a gray. But now he's getting lighter and lighter,
- 2:54Speaker 3: even to clear. Back here in the woods, I can
- 2:58Speaker 3: feel the dawn. I can feel the dawn. I can
- 3:01Speaker 3: see the dawn. Look through the trees well, the lake sat.
- 3:07Speaker 3: The big lakes are shining like a tub full of
- 3:09Speaker 3: soap SuDS. I'm glad we come, ain't you, Betty.
- 3:15Speaker 2: I'm glad we come early.
- 3:17Speaker 3: I'm glad we come.
- 3:20Speaker 1: They stand a moment, breathless at the beauty before them.
- 3:25Speaker 3: Let's sit down.
- 3:26Speaker 1: They sit at left.
- 3:29Speaker 3: The horse is tied up, grubs safe in the buggy.
- 3:32Speaker 3: Miss Meredith and the rest of em won't be here
- 3:34Speaker 3: for a long time yet. They'll be here though, Yeah,
- 3:38Speaker 3: but it'll be a long time. Won't Miss Meredith be
- 3:42Speaker 3: surprised to find us here ahead everybody? It was my idea.
- 3:47Speaker 3: She'll think we're pretty smart.
- 3:49Speaker 2: How many's coming?
- 3:51Speaker 3: The whole class, I guess, except the Davis boy. It'll
- 3:55Speaker 3: be a nice day to picnic, won't it.
- 3:58Speaker 1: He rises and goes away from her and looks out
- 4:01Speaker 1: toward the lake.
- 4:03Speaker 3: I always liked the big lake. I've come here many
- 4:06Speaker 3: as the time with Pau when we go out to
- 4:09Speaker 3: get some cattle, miles and miles through the violin heat,
- 4:13Speaker 3: tongue clawing at your mouths, I eatin dust. Maybe we'd
- 4:17Speaker 3: go dust pilin up an blinding you, I getting in
- 4:21Speaker 3: your mouth and eyes till you thought you couldn't stand it.
- 4:24Speaker 3: An then the dark woods here briars a clawing at
- 4:28Speaker 3: your legs and hands rattleer's a hidin' under the leaves,
- 4:31Speaker 3: Maybe logs to make your horses jump and branches you'd
- 4:35Speaker 3: had to dodge. Then the lake flowin wide out plumb
- 4:41Speaker 3: over almost all sight. I satin there in the sun,
- 4:45Speaker 3: like somethin' you never hoped to see. I'd always want
- 4:48Speaker 3: to get off my horse and go down to the
- 4:51Speaker 3: edge of it and totch it and look at it
- 4:54Speaker 3: a long time. But POD always say, sat there, a garkin,
- 4:59Speaker 3: you kid. We got to get back to the sawmill
- 5:02Speaker 3: or two o'clock. Lord, he'd say, to the other end
- 5:05Speaker 3: of the lake is dried up, pretty good, son, We
- 5:08Speaker 3: could cross over that instead of go around by the
- 5:11Speaker 3: section line. I ain't never seen it like this, though
- 5:16Speaker 3: it's prettier, not ever seen it. And we can look
- 5:20Speaker 3: at it as long as we want to, and we
- 5:23Speaker 3: can go out on it in a boat if there
- 5:26Speaker 3: is a boat.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Why don't you come over here and set down by me.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Why don't you come over here and look at the lake.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I can see it good from here.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Come on over the big log and you can see
- 5:39Speaker 3: it better.
- 5:40Speaker 2: No, I like it here better.
- 5:43Speaker 3: You's funny said over there, Then I like you there
- 5:47Speaker 3: just as well. You look pretty good no matter where
- 5:50Speaker 3: you're a sittin'. You sat pretty good. I like you
- 5:54Speaker 3: settin there with the vine leaves and the tree leaves
- 5:57Speaker 3: behind you. You got purdier and perdier.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Betty have I You're sweet to say it.
- 6:05Speaker 3: Why wouldn't I say it?
- 6:07Speaker 2: No reason not to. I like to hear it.
- 6:10Speaker 3: Words get in the way. Some I can't think to
- 6:13Speaker 3: say much.
- 6:15Speaker 2: There's no need to say much.
- 6:17Speaker 3: There is need to seems to me you're coming to Verdice.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Was like you'd come from some place besides down the river.
- 6:25Speaker 3: It made me think of the Bible, something about the
- 6:28Speaker 3: angel that come down to roll away the stone.
- 6:31Speaker 2: You wasn't dead.
- 6:33Speaker 3: I was asleep. I was I was young asleep. I
- 6:38Speaker 3: was a boy asleep. I'm awake now I'm a man.
- 6:43Speaker 3: I've come to life.
- 6:45Speaker 2: You'd think I is an angel sprouting wings.
- 6:49Speaker 3: You're better in an angel.
- 6:51Speaker 2: I ain't.
- 6:53Speaker 3: Yeah, two to me better in an angel. I'll put
- 6:57Speaker 3: this flower in your hair. No, it's like a star.
- 7:03Speaker 2: No, No, where'd you get it at?
- 7:06Speaker 3: Why here under the leaves?
- 7:09Speaker 2: It growed up through the dead leaves. I don't like it.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Why, Betty, I can't.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Stand them kind of flowers.
- 7:19Speaker 3: It's just a flower growing in the woods.
- 7:22Speaker 2: In the dark woods.
- 7:25Speaker 8: Lloyd, What is it?
- 7:28Speaker 5: Lloyd?
- 7:29Speaker 2: Let's go away from here.
- 7:31Speaker 3: Where do you want to go to?
- 7:34Speaker 2: Out of here? Out of these woods? Oh you think
- 7:38Speaker 2: I ain't right. I can't expect you to know how
- 7:40Speaker 2: I feel. There's something I don't know what it is. Please,
- 7:45Speaker 2: It's like the woods.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Was wading like an animal to get.
- 7:50Speaker 2: Us, to get us. I'm afeared these things growing here
- 7:55Speaker 2: and fighting, these things crawling on the ground, under the ground,
- 7:59Speaker 2: in the trees everywhere. I'm a feared.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I'm a feared, Lloyd, I'm a feared too. Let's go where'll.
- 8:08Speaker 2: We go to?
- 8:10Speaker 3: Out on the lake.
- 8:11Speaker 2: There's no boat.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Further down there's a cabin I know, and a boat. Maybe.
- 8:17Speaker 3: Come on, let's go to it.
- 8:20Speaker 1: They start, Lloyd stops shaking off his fear.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Ah, listen, what's the matter with us? Runnin like rabbits?
- 8:30Speaker 3: There ain't nothin to be skeered of. We're just cold,
- 8:33Speaker 3: that's all that's it. Driv us. The long afford got lies,
- 8:38Speaker 3: just got us chilled to the bone. I ain't cold, yeah,
- 8:43Speaker 3: cold as eyes. You're tremblin'.
- 8:45Speaker 2: I'm a feared.
- 8:47Speaker 3: We'll go to the cabin then it's safe.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Thar and get the boat and go out on the lake.
- 8:53Speaker 3: We'll get warm first.
- 8:55Speaker 2: No, no, let's not go to the cabin. Let's go
- 8:58Speaker 2: on the lake.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Why, Betty, I never.
- 9:02Speaker 6: Seen you like this.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I never been like this.
- 9:06Speaker 3: Come on to the lake, now, Betty, to the cabin first. Ay,
- 9:11Speaker 3: you're cold. There'll be a fire burnin there. I don't
- 9:16Speaker 3: know who's a livin there, but we'll go up an
- 9:18Speaker 3: knock an ask to get warm. They'll be up country folks.
- 9:22Speaker 3: Get up early an they'll have a fire, a nice
- 9:25Speaker 3: rollin warm fire in the fireplace for us to get
- 9:28Speaker 3: warm at. Won't you like that, Mebby. It's the funniest
- 9:34Speaker 3: kind of cabin you ever see. It's a log cabin.
- 9:38Speaker 3: I've been in it a long time ago with Pa. It's
- 9:41Speaker 3: a nice log cabin. An they'll have a fire.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Well, I'll go.
- 9:46Speaker 3: If you think from the outside, it looks just like
- 9:49Speaker 3: any log cabin. But when you open the door an
- 9:52Speaker 3: look in, whatd'yo see? Steps? Three steps A goin down
- 9:57Speaker 3: to the dirt floor. It's pot under the ground.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Oh, like it growed up out of the ground.
- 10:04Speaker 3: Yes, just like that, like it growed out of the ground.
- 10:09Speaker 2: It growed out of the ground. It growed out of
- 10:11Speaker 2: the same ground the big woods growed out of.
- 10:14Speaker 1: She shudders.
- 10:17Speaker 3: Yeah, let's don't go there, just long enough to get warm. No,
- 10:23Speaker 3: not that warm, and ask him for the boat here
- 10:26Speaker 3: if they got a boat, couldn't.
- 10:28Speaker 2: We just take the boat without asking?
- 10:31Speaker 8: Betty?
- 10:32Speaker 3: Course we couldn't.
- 10:34Speaker 2: I don't see why.
- 10:35Speaker 3: I don't see we ain't these I'd be one. No,
- 10:40Speaker 3: you wouldn't. Come on to the lake, to the cabin.
- 10:45Speaker 3: First lake, No, Betty, cabin.
- 10:50Speaker 1: They go out right. Curtain scene too. Interior of the
- 10:57Speaker 1: cabin at the bout three steps the sun from the
- 11:00Speaker 1: planked door to the dirt floor of the cabin. Windows
- 11:05Speaker 1: curtained are on either side of the door. They are
- 11:09Speaker 1: so high up that only a tall man can see out.
- 11:13Speaker 1: A wide fireplace made of stone rises from the floor
- 11:17Speaker 1: at the right end of the room. In the left
- 11:20Speaker 1: corner of the cabin, a wide double deck bunk juts out.
- 11:25Speaker 1: Crazy quilts cover both beds. A few chairs, A rough
- 11:29Speaker 1: table set for breakfast at right of steps, and utensils
- 11:34Speaker 1: for cooking at the fireplace complete the furnishings. A fire
- 11:40Speaker 1: burns in the fireplace. Coffee bubbles on a little iron
- 11:44Speaker 1: stand on the hearth. It is dark and gloomy. No
- 11:48Speaker 1: direct sunlight has ever reached this secret place. Ellie, a tall,
- 11:54Speaker 1: dark woman of thirty five, stands tensely by the corner
- 11:58Speaker 1: of the bunk. Her face, even in her excitement, is
- 12:03Speaker 1: brooding and restrained. Her thick black hair, parted in the middle,
- 12:08Speaker 1: is done up in a knob at the back of
- 12:10Speaker 1: her head. She is wearing a faded, predominantly purple plaid dress,
- 12:17Speaker 1: full sleeved, full skirted, pulled in at the waist. After
- 12:22Speaker 1: a moment, she goes swiftly to the fireplace, pokes the fire,
- 12:27Speaker 1: then goes across to the window nearest the bunk, and
- 12:30Speaker 1: with extraordinary agility and grace, steps upon a chair under
- 12:35Speaker 1: the window and looks out. She gets down, goes slowly
- 12:40Speaker 1: toward the fireplace in the center of the room. She halts,
- 12:45Speaker 1: wheels about, and faces the door. It opens. A man
- 12:50Speaker 1: comes in quickly and closes the door, as if shutting
- 12:53Speaker 1: something out. He turns facing her from the top of
- 12:58Speaker 1: the steps. He is of medium height, brutal, crafty. His
- 13:03Speaker 1: clothes are nondescript and unclean. His hair slance into his
- 13:09Speaker 1: eyes butch.
- 13:11Speaker 4: Thank god I didn't see ye.
- 13:14Speaker 1: She makes a step toward him.
- 13:17Speaker 4: Shut up, butch, what is it?
- 13:20Speaker 5: Shut up? I tell you, squawking like a hen, you
- 13:23Speaker 5: want to get me killed? They followed me.
- 13:28Speaker 4: Tell me what is it?
- 13:30Speaker 5: I'll show em. They won't get me. I've got away
- 13:35Speaker 5: from better men than they are. They won't get me alive,
- 13:38Speaker 5: the lousy bumps. I'd like to see em. And they
- 13:44Speaker 5: followed me. I've been at the switch and when I
- 13:47Speaker 5: started back, I've seen three men a following. They'll come here,
- 13:54Speaker 5: and they ain't got nothin on me. They can't prove nothing.
- 14:01Speaker 5: They don't know. It's me done it. They only got
- 14:05Speaker 5: somebody's word. They don't know it, and they can't prove it.
- 14:11Speaker 5: No one saw me.
- 14:13Speaker 4: But I knowed this had come. I knowed it. You'll
- 14:17Speaker 4: get sent up, and it ain't right. You ain't done
- 14:21Speaker 4: nothing wrong. It's just a law. What the hell's along?
- 14:25Speaker 4: What's a good fer? Whind it again? The law everywhere
- 14:28Speaker 4: else to sell whiskey. Them men where they have their
- 14:32Speaker 4: corner saloons all polished up, are making it criminal to
- 14:35Speaker 4: sell a man a drink? What's right about it?
- 14:39Speaker 6: Oh?
- 14:39Speaker 4: Yes, I know? Protecting the Indians, They don't want the
- 14:45Speaker 4: Indians to get all it up like they do all
- 14:47Speaker 4: the time, every day, every night, regular hell Indians. I
- 14:53Speaker 4: ain't saw two Indians since I come to Indian territory.
- 14:58Speaker 4: Now they'll get you noted. They'll stick you for selling
- 15:03Speaker 4: the stuff to the poor fools that's too scared and
- 15:06Speaker 4: too weak. And two damn bigger cowards to go up
- 15:10Speaker 4: to Kansas City are Joplin and bring in their own
- 15:13Speaker 4: whiskey like a man. They'll send you to jail, the
- 15:17Speaker 4: only man that's got guts enough to do it. You'll
- 15:20Speaker 4: get ten years or more. Well I get, I'll get off.
- 15:25Speaker 4: That's what I'll get. I'll get left here to rock.
- 15:29Speaker 5: Shut up.
- 15:32Speaker 1: He goes up these steps and listens intently. Then he
- 15:36Speaker 1: comes down.
- 15:38Speaker 5: Let up on your jail stuff. You'll have me scared,
- 15:43Speaker 5: and I gotta keep my senses. Listen to me. I've
- 15:47Speaker 5: been followed before. The last bunch of guys laid in
- 15:50Speaker 5: wait close to the hall or where the whiskey's at.
- 15:53Speaker 5: Did that stop me from getting a whiskey and getting
- 15:55Speaker 5: out with it? Do that stop me from selling it? Regularly?
- 15:58Speaker 5: To Joe Hurd's Curry story at Clermont, I've been follered
- 16:03Speaker 5: lots of times, and you know it. I've been follered
- 16:06Speaker 5: lots of times, count of selling whiskey. It ain't nothing
- 16:09Speaker 5: new to me this time I'm follered. And it ain't
- 16:13Speaker 5: on account of the whiskey. It's something else.
- 16:17Speaker 4: Butch, you got to tell me what is it? What
- 16:21Speaker 4: have you done?
- 16:23Speaker 5: Easy? Easy?
- 16:27Speaker 4: You was scared. I never see you like that before.
- 16:31Speaker 4: You've done something. Tell me what it is? What have
- 16:34Speaker 4: you done?
- 16:36Speaker 8: Lay off?
- 16:37Speaker 5: Take it easy? Butch, christ say you're a mad woman.
- 16:44Speaker 5: Keep your shirt on. Maybe you ain't done nothing. Maybe
- 16:49Speaker 5: you'd just been fooling myself. Maybe for all I know,
- 16:53Speaker 5: they ain't nothing to get excited about.
- 16:57Speaker 4: Butch, you got blood on your coat.
- 17:00Speaker 1: She stands a moment, terrified.
- 17:03Speaker 4: Your hurt? Why'n you tell me quick? Lemme fix it?
- 17:08Speaker 4: I didn't know.
- 17:10Speaker 5: Ain't hurt?
- 17:11Speaker 4: You're bleedin.
- 17:12Speaker 5: It ain't my blood.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Eli draws back her hand, ut her face confused.
- 17:19Speaker 5: A killed a man?
- 17:21Speaker 4: Oh you'll hang for it. Butch Adams, why'd you go
- 17:26Speaker 4: an do it? Who was it?
- 17:28Speaker 5: Jim Dorry? He told on me for selling whisky. He
- 17:33Speaker 5: told the federal officers, aid Telsey, I killed him stuck
- 17:37Speaker 5: a knife in him and turned it around. That's why
- 17:41Speaker 5: I went out at midnight to lay for room. I
- 17:44Speaker 5: knowed he'd go to the play party or to Bingham's.
- 17:48Speaker 5: I laid for him in the big woods, close to
- 17:50Speaker 5: the sawmill. Here he'd go that a way home. I
- 17:53Speaker 5: figured about three o'clock this mornin' he come along in
- 17:58Speaker 5: a buggy with one horse to it. I jumped out,
- 18:02Speaker 5: grabbed the bridle. He leaped out on me with a knife.
- 18:05Speaker 5: I got hold of it. I stuck it through his
- 18:08Speaker 5: ribs and turned it around. Then I got scared they
- 18:15Speaker 5: might think I'd done it finding him so close to here.
- 18:19Speaker 5: It wouldn't do to find him so close, picked him
- 18:22Speaker 5: up and dumped him in the buggy and give the
- 18:24Speaker 5: horse a crack with a stick. He started off and
- 18:27Speaker 5: a run down the road. But not afore I'd saw
- 18:30Speaker 5: Jim kind of raise up one of his hands to
- 18:34Speaker 5: his face. He wasn't dead. I hadn't made shawl. He
- 18:41Speaker 5: wasn't dead, and he'd tell him me. He'd tell someone
- 18:46Speaker 5: for he died, and I'd hang for it. Oh, maybe
- 18:50Speaker 5: I could catch up and finish the jaw. But the
- 18:53Speaker 5: horse run like mad, crashing through the bushes, but kept
- 18:56Speaker 5: purty close to the road. I run and run after him,
- 19:00Speaker 5: almost to the switch. Then I seen someone come out
- 19:05Speaker 5: of the store and whirl a light was burning, and
- 19:09Speaker 5: grabbed the horse's bridle. I seen him take Jim up
- 19:13Speaker 5: and carry him in and shut the door. I run away.
- 19:17Speaker 4: Then.
- 19:17Speaker 5: I didn't know if he was dead or not. If
- 19:20Speaker 5: he wasn't he telling me I was crazy. Not knowing
- 19:24Speaker 5: if he was dead or not, I come on to
- 19:27Speaker 5: the woods. I couldn't stand it, not knowing. I started back.
- 19:31Speaker 5: When I got to the edge of the woods, I
- 19:33Speaker 5: seen three men coming up the road. I'd knowed one
- 19:35Speaker 5: of them. It was the sheriff. They must have wired
- 19:39Speaker 5: the Claremont for him. Jim had told on me, Ellie,
- 19:43Speaker 5: what'll I do? They'll get me.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Elly goes over to the fireplace in her absorbed way,
- 19:51Speaker 1: without speaking, and pour some water in a pan.
- 19:55Speaker 5: Ellie, they'll be here any minute, for God's sake, say something.
- 20:03Speaker 4: Your breakfast ready, Ellie. Take off your.
- 20:07Speaker 1: Coat, he does, like one in a daze.
- 20:11Speaker 4: Throw it under the monk.
- 20:13Speaker 1: He does, so, wash your hands. He moves toward the
- 20:18Speaker 1: pants slowly and begins to wash his hands. She has
- 20:22Speaker 1: gone to the table with the coffee pot and poured
- 20:25Speaker 1: some coffee. He finishes washing and dries his hands on
- 20:29Speaker 1: a towel. Sit down, He moves toward the table.
- 20:35Speaker 5: But Ellie, sit down.
- 20:37Speaker 4: And eat your breakfast, mister murderer.
- 20:41Speaker 1: He sits. Ellie leans over the table.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Eat a plenty, drink, here's coffee, salt, pork, gravy, potatoes,
- 20:51Speaker 4: eat them. Enjoy yourself.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Butch half rising, what do you mean it?
- 20:58Speaker 5: I had not a dummy. Would you want me to do?
- 21:02Speaker 5: Let him get away with it. Let that dirty little
- 21:04Speaker 5: coward sneak off to Telsey and stick the officers on
- 21:07Speaker 5: to me like bloodhounds and do nothing about it. That
- 21:10Speaker 5: ain't my way. Someone does me dirt, he gets it,
- 21:14Speaker 5: you can count on it. I ain't no Christian. I'm
- 21:18Speaker 5: a man. You I'm a man.
- 21:22Speaker 1: Let up, ell He goes away from him, bitterly, your.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Lorn I thought you was. I never thought to be
- 21:32Speaker 4: living with a murderer.
- 21:33Speaker 1: He comes toward her.
- 21:36Speaker 4: Oh, I ain't so good. I know you don't have
- 21:39Speaker 4: to tell me, but I never thought to come to this.
- 21:43Speaker 4: I thought I knowed what I was getting into when
- 21:45Speaker 4: I went away with you. I knowed you was a bootlegger.
- 21:49Speaker 4: I didn't care. It's clean, it's right. But killing. I
- 21:54Speaker 4: stop at killing. Why'd you go and do it? Why
- 21:58Speaker 4: did you?
- 22:00Speaker 2: Oh?
- 22:00Speaker 4: They'll come and take you. They'll take you away from me.
- 22:04Speaker 5: Christ's sakes, Shut up. It took me away for bootlegging.
- 22:11Speaker 4: No, they wouldn't. They couldn't have proved it. But now
- 22:15Speaker 4: they'll take you. They'll hang you for murder.
- 22:18Speaker 1: She clings to him.
- 22:21Speaker 4: No, I won't let him. They can't take you. I
- 22:24Speaker 4: love you. I can't help it, and I won't let
- 22:27Speaker 4: them take you away from me. I won't let them.
- 22:30Speaker 4: I'll find a way. I will. They ain't proved you
- 22:32Speaker 4: done it. You said, no one's seen you.
- 22:35Speaker 5: They got Jim's word.
- 22:37Speaker 4: I tell you he's dead. He can't talk now, sh.
- 22:42Speaker 1: Hurts him, excitedly, drawing his pistol.
- 22:47Speaker 4: Do you get me give me that gun?
- 22:51Speaker 5: Not as long as I'm alive, butch give.
- 22:54Speaker 4: It to me. I'm all right now. I ain't never
- 22:57Speaker 4: advised you wrong. I'll get you. Listen to me. You
- 23:02Speaker 4: ain't been out of the house, you hear, not since yesterday?
- 23:06Speaker 4: Eat your breakfast.
- 23:08Speaker 1: She goes to the window, steps on the chair and looks.
- 23:11Speaker 4: Out it's only a man and woman.
- 23:15Speaker 5: It's blind.
- 23:16Speaker 1: No, no coming down.
- 23:19Speaker 4: It's just a boy and girl, a couple of kids.
- 23:22Speaker 4: Keep them out, No, we'll let them in. It's providence.
- 23:27Speaker 5: It's blind.
- 23:28Speaker 4: I tell you, it's luck. It's our luck. Maybe we
- 23:32Speaker 4: can use them some way. I don't know yet. Give
- 23:37Speaker 4: me the gun.
- 23:38Speaker 1: He hands it to her reluctantly.
- 23:41Speaker 4: Keep your head. These two come in. They'll keep you
- 23:45Speaker 4: from hanging, Butch Adams.
- 23:47Speaker 1: She goes swiftly to the bunks and hides the pistol
- 23:51Speaker 1: under the quilts. Butch goes back to the table and sits.
- 23:55Speaker 1: There is a moment of intense silence, then a knock in.
- 24:01Speaker 1: Lloyd and Betty come in. They look very slight, very
- 24:05Speaker 1: delicate in this somber place. How do.
- 24:10Speaker 3: Howdy you got a file? We can get warm out
- 24:14Speaker 3: over there. If it will bother you, if we'd be
- 24:19Speaker 3: in your way, it.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Won't bother me. Nothing gets in my way. You're welcome,
- 24:25Speaker 4: come in and get warm if you want to.
- 24:29Speaker 1: They come down the steps slowly. Ellie turns to the window.
- 24:33Speaker 4: I get you a cheer.
- 24:35Speaker 1: Lloyd and Betty turn and are about to go to
- 24:38Speaker 1: the fireplace when Butch rises from the table where he
- 24:42Speaker 1: has been sitting. They see him for the first time
- 24:46Speaker 1: and stop.
- 24:46Speaker 4: It alarm, but spring a cheer up.
- 24:50Speaker 1: He picks up a chair and sets it in front
- 24:53Speaker 1: of the fireplace. Lloyd and Betty watch him anxiously. He
- 24:58Speaker 1: goes across to the bunks sits down. Ellie crosses over
- 25:02Speaker 1: with another chair.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Here's another chair, sit down. They go over slowly and
- 25:09Speaker 4: sit the forest going strong. Maybe you'd like a cup
- 25:13Speaker 4: of hot coffee, would you, Betty?
- 25:16Speaker 1: She shakes her head and no, ma'am, thank you.
- 25:21Speaker 4: I guess you've had your breakfast.
- 25:24Speaker 3: No, we ain't yet. We're going to have it soon
- 25:26Speaker 3: as miss Meredith comes.
- 25:28Speaker 4: Oh's smiths, Meredith, I teach you. Oh over to the switch.
- 25:35Speaker 3: Yes, it's a picnic breakfast here in the woods for
- 25:38Speaker 3: the whole class.
- 25:40Speaker 4: Oh, you've come off for early.
- 25:45Speaker 3: Nobody's coming yet but us we come early.
- 25:48Speaker 4: How'd you happen to do that?
- 25:51Speaker 3: Why we we just thought we'd come early. We drove
- 25:55Speaker 3: over from the switch horse and buggies up here aways
- 25:59Speaker 3: not for oh.
- 26:02Speaker 1: She looks from one to the other, then to Betty.
- 26:06Speaker 4: Are you getting warm? Miss?
- 26:08Speaker 2: Yes'm I was cold?
- 26:11Speaker 4: She was trembling you'd ought to wear more clothes when
- 26:14Speaker 4: you go out surly. Yes'm your Martaughta told you. Mastead
- 26:22Speaker 4: your pard Atta told you.
- 26:23Speaker 11: Then he's asleep.
- 26:26Speaker 1: The three smile at this. Lloyd and Betty begin to
- 26:30Speaker 1: feel more at ease.
- 26:33Speaker 2: This is the first time I've been out surly. I
- 26:36Speaker 2: didn't know it was cold. Now I know before it
- 26:39Speaker 2: gets sun up. It's liable to be even after son up.
- 26:43Speaker 2: It's apt to be cold here in the woods.
- 26:45Speaker 5: Ain't it, Ellie. Ain't you got a coat? You could
- 26:49Speaker 5: let her? Maury?
- 26:51Speaker 4: Why, yes, I got a coat to Betty. I'll lend
- 26:55Speaker 4: you one.
- 26:56Speaker 2: No, you mustn't. I'm obliged to you. But I don't
- 27:00Speaker 2: you show Yes'm.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Butch's interruption causes a constrained silence. Ellie goes away toward
- 27:08Speaker 1: the bunks thoughtfully. Betty, uneasy, looks at Lloyd. Then Butcher rises,
- 27:16Speaker 1: crosses the room, takes the poker and stirs the fire.
- 27:20Speaker 1: He goes back to the little table and sits down.
- 27:24Speaker 1: Lloyd rises, makes a step toward Ellie.
- 27:28Speaker 5: Maybe we better go, now sit down.
- 27:33Speaker 1: He begins eating his breakfast.
- 27:36Speaker 4: He ain't had his breakfast. Don't mind him, We better go.
- 27:40Speaker 4: He don't mean nothing.
- 27:42Speaker 3: Well, we'll stay a minute or two.
- 27:45Speaker 1: He goes back and sits down, Ellie, as if nothing
- 27:49Speaker 1: had happened.
- 27:51Speaker 4: Must be fun to come a picnicking in the woods.
- 27:54Speaker 3: I don't know. I ain't never been.
- 27:57Speaker 4: I ain't been since I was your age. Why ain't
- 28:00Speaker 4: you been.
- 28:02Speaker 3: I've always worked help my dad drive cattle till now
- 28:06Speaker 3: I'm in school.
- 28:07Speaker 4: And ain't never been to school before. No, ma'am, an
- 28:12Speaker 4: ain't never went on picnic, not till now. I used
- 28:17Speaker 4: to go all the time when I was your age
- 28:20Speaker 4: in Kansas City. Woods wasn't far away. Used to go,
- 28:24Speaker 4: a whole crowd of us every Sunday, set on the ground,
- 28:29Speaker 4: real ground, stood old pavement with grass of growing out
- 28:33Speaker 4: of it. First I'd ever saw. We thought it was fine.
- 28:37Speaker 4: You've missed a lot.
- 28:39Speaker 3: Yes, um, I guess so. But I've had fun. I've
- 28:43Speaker 3: been out with Paul a lot driving cattle. He buys
- 28:46Speaker 3: em up different places, verdigree, foil, Caesia, even so fur
- 28:51Speaker 3: away as prior Crieck. Then we could saddle off our
- 28:54Speaker 3: horses and go out and drive em in to ship
- 28:56Speaker 3: to the market at Saint Louis.
- 28:58Speaker 4: What's fun about dry cattle sounds like work to me.
- 29:03Speaker 3: Well, it's work, and it's fun too.
- 29:07Speaker 4: In winter, looks like you'd freeze your ears off.
- 29:11Speaker 3: Oh, we don't drive a mushroom winter.
- 29:13Speaker 4: Well, in the summer, then in the spring, I don't
- 29:18Speaker 4: see what's fun about the scorching heat and the dust
- 29:21Speaker 4: and the hot wind. I'd want to be in out
- 29:23Speaker 4: of it. I'd want to be under a roof, whether
- 29:26Speaker 4: sun didn't hit me.
- 29:28Speaker 3: Sun's bad, that's bad too. Wind dan so good. But
- 29:33Speaker 3: there's something else.
- 29:35Speaker 4: Yeah, what is it?
- 29:37Speaker 1: Lloyd going across to her.
- 29:40Speaker 3: I don't know. It's kind of crazy.
- 29:43Speaker 4: I had a crazy brother.
- 29:46Speaker 3: Lloyd smiling, Well, it ain't as bad as that.
- 29:50Speaker 4: My brother wasn't bad, just wasn't right. He used to
- 29:54Speaker 4: run out in the woods here like he is wild.
- 29:57Speaker 4: He lived here with us, He done queer things.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Thanks, this is queer too. You'll laugh. You see, when
- 30:05Speaker 3: Paul and me goes out to drive cattle, some time
- 30:08Speaker 3: or other, we pass by the big lake. The lake,
- 30:12Speaker 3: yes'm Sometimes it's early when we first died out from
- 30:16Speaker 3: the switch. Sometimes it's middle of the day when we
- 30:20Speaker 3: got back from Grand River. Sometimes it's night, but we
- 30:24Speaker 3: always pass by it. Some time or other.
- 30:28Speaker 4: I don't see what's fun about it. I've been living
- 30:31Speaker 4: here three years. I can see the lake anytime. There's
- 30:35Speaker 4: no fun to that.
- 30:38Speaker 3: I can't explain it very well. It's nice, nice to
- 30:42Speaker 3: see it, no matter where you're at, what time of
- 30:46Speaker 3: day it is. It's nice snow, the lakes are and
- 30:49Speaker 3: it's nice snow. At some time. Maybe you'll get a
- 30:52Speaker 3: chance to go out on it. I ain't never been.
- 30:56Speaker 3: I always want to smiling. Kind of crazy, ain't.
- 31:01Speaker 1: It, Ellie? Thoughtfully?
- 31:04Speaker 3: Yes, I told you it was.
- 31:08Speaker 4: You're not the only one, the only one. What crazy?
- 31:14Speaker 4: These others? I saw them? Do you ever read the newspapers?
- 31:20Speaker 3: I know them.
- 31:21Speaker 4: I can't read well.
- 31:25Speaker 3: Not much, but I'm gonna learn better.
- 31:29Speaker 4: How long you lived at the switch, always lived there?
- 31:34Speaker 4: Then you must have heard of people getting drowned in
- 31:36Speaker 4: the lake?
- 31:38Speaker 2: Yes?
- 31:39Speaker 4: Crazy? Why they go on it?
- 31:43Speaker 3: Can't the lake's fault. It's there.
- 31:46Speaker 4: Yeah, for going out on it, No.
- 31:50Speaker 3: For carelessness. Some of them fall in, some of them
- 31:53Speaker 3: turn the boat over. Sometimes the boat leaks.
- 31:57Speaker 4: Yeah, But if they didn't try to go out on
- 32:01Speaker 4: the lake, the boat wouldn't leak, the boat wouldn't turn over,
- 32:04Speaker 4: and they wouldn't fall in. It's their fault for going.
- 32:09Speaker 3: But people will go out on it. People want to.
- 32:12Speaker 4: It ain't wrong, No, it t ain't wrong. And people
- 32:17Speaker 4: will do it. That's the trouble. They will do it.
- 32:22Speaker 4: And do you know who it is? Does it? Do
- 32:25Speaker 4: you know who it is that's always getting drowned in
- 32:28Speaker 4: the lake? People like you, young people like yourselves picnicking
- 32:34Speaker 4: My brother. He got drowned out there a month back.
- 32:38Speaker 4: We never did find him.
- 32:41Speaker 1: Butch has risen to put a log on the fire.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Bet He shrinks away from him as he goes near her.
- 32:48Speaker 5: Warm now, yes, sir.
- 32:51Speaker 1: Lloyd goes over quickly, anxiously, we better go.
- 32:55Speaker 2: Lloyd, I'm warm, I'm plenty warm.
- 32:58Speaker 3: Well we'll go then to Butch. Thank you, mister, thank
- 33:04Speaker 3: you for the fire.
- 33:06Speaker 1: He turns toward Ellie.
- 33:09Speaker 3: I was going to ask you if we could borrow
- 33:10Speaker 3: your boat. I don't know now, I want.
- 33:13Speaker 1: To Betty quickly nervously to Ellie.
- 33:19Speaker 2: You got a boat, ain't you?
- 33:21Speaker 9: Yes, let us bory it a while.
- 33:24Speaker 2: Please let us wory it.
- 33:27Speaker 3: Lloyd to Betty, you still want to go on the lake.
- 33:31Speaker 2: Yes, I do?
- 33:33Speaker 9: To Ellie, please can't we take it?
- 33:37Speaker 2: For a while.
- 33:38Speaker 4: I don't know. I ain't so shuw.
- 33:42Speaker 5: Worrio bored all you want to here's the keys, Lloyd
- 33:47Speaker 5: takes it, bring it back when you get ready. Oars
- 33:52Speaker 5: is over there by the door.
- 33:54Speaker 1: Thank you to Ellie.
- 33:57Speaker 3: Thanks for the fire.
- 34:00Speaker 1: Lloyd and Betty go toward these steps. He picks up
- 34:03Speaker 1: the oars. They go up these steps. Lloyd turns to Ellie.
- 34:08Speaker 3: The ol seem to be good. The boat don't leak,
- 34:12Speaker 3: does it?
- 34:13Speaker 4: No, it don't leak?
- 34:15Speaker 1: Lloyd smiling, Well.
- 34:17Speaker 3: I'm careful, Betty's careful. We'll make out, all right.
- 34:21Speaker 1: I guess they go out. Ellie looks sharply at Butch.
- 34:26Speaker 1: He turns back to the table and sits down. She
- 34:30Speaker 1: follows him over.
- 34:32Speaker 4: Why'd you do it?
- 34:34Speaker 5: Do what?
- 34:35Speaker 4: Give him the key? Give him the oars?
- 34:38Speaker 5: Why to get rid of them? I didn't want him here?
- 34:43Speaker 5: It is you wanted him?
- 34:45Speaker 4: You're lying? Why'd you do it? I told you that
- 34:50Speaker 4: wasn't it. You got some reason?
- 34:52Speaker 5: You had a reason for letting him come in too,
- 34:56Speaker 5: you said you did anyway, Well, what was it?
- 35:00Speaker 4: I thought we could use him, use them?
- 35:03Speaker 5: How could we use him?
- 35:05Speaker 4: I guess we can't?
- 35:07Speaker 5: No of course not. He never had no idea that
- 35:11Speaker 5: you was just talking.
- 35:13Speaker 4: I did have an idea. I thought when I seen
- 35:17Speaker 4: him outside, they might be a way of throwing the
- 35:20Speaker 4: blame onto that boy Someway.
- 35:23Speaker 1: Butch rising excited.
- 35:26Speaker 5: Ellie, you thought of blaming him with Yes.
- 35:30Speaker 4: For I seen him.
- 35:31Speaker 6: I did.
- 35:32Speaker 4: After he come in, I knowed we couldn't.
- 35:35Speaker 5: Well why not.
- 35:37Speaker 4: I wouldn't have the nerve to try to throw it
- 35:39Speaker 4: onto him. Maybe it'd work, all right, Maybe it could
- 35:43Speaker 4: be done, these ways of making fools out of the law. Oh,
- 35:48Speaker 4: I know, I've done it many's the time. And we
- 35:51Speaker 4: could get suspicion on this boy Someway and he'd hang too,
- 35:55Speaker 4: innocent and all. But I can't do it. I wouldn't
- 35:58Speaker 4: think of doing it.
- 36:00Speaker 5: Well, why wouldn't you.
- 36:03Speaker 4: Butch, forget, I said it, Forget, I ever thought of
- 36:06Speaker 4: such a thing.
- 36:08Speaker 5: I'm glad you thought of it.
- 36:10Speaker 4: What do you mean?
- 36:12Speaker 5: I mean? It's an id. I wouldn't have thought of it.
- 36:16Speaker 5: I can see, I can see away. You're a smart woman, Ellie.
- 36:22Speaker 5: Wait a minute, let me think.
- 36:25Speaker 4: No, you can't do it. What are you thinking of?
- 36:29Speaker 5: Why not? You want me to hang?
- 36:33Speaker 4: No?
- 36:34Speaker 5: Shut up? Then the officers will come here. What'll I
- 36:39Speaker 5: tell him? What'll I say? He'll come in the door.
- 36:42Speaker 5: This boy, he'll be out on the lake by that time.
- 36:46Speaker 4: Butch, Butch, shut up. You can't plan to do this.
- 36:52Speaker 4: I won't let you get that boy killed. He's too young.
- 36:56Speaker 4: He's too sweet looking.
- 36:58Speaker 5: Hah, he ain't. I ain't I sweet looking? You said, so?
- 37:03Speaker 6: Do you mean it?
- 37:05Speaker 4: I come here and lived with.
- 37:07Speaker 5: You, sold Lily, sowed Marge. Would they do Lily on
- 37:15Speaker 5: her death? Better? Damning me? I can hear her yet, Marge,
- 37:21Speaker 5: she tried to give me up to the law. I
- 37:23Speaker 5: fixed her. Hell, they both come here and lived with me.
- 37:28Speaker 5: That don't prove nothing. You gotta prove it some other way.
- 37:34Speaker 5: You gotta help me.
- 37:37Speaker 4: I've helped you, bending over your far, cooking your victuals,
- 37:42Speaker 4: washing your clothes, making the beds you slept in. I've
- 37:46Speaker 4: helped you living in this damp cellar like a mole,
- 37:50Speaker 4: with no sunshine or coming in, and no moonlight ever.
- 37:54Speaker 4: I've tended you when you are sick. I've lied for you.
- 37:58Speaker 4: I've buried myself away from all the decent folks I
- 38:02Speaker 4: ever knowed here in these dark woods for three years
- 38:07Speaker 4: why'd I do it? Why did I? It's proof you want?
- 38:11Speaker 4: Is it? Then? Look at me? Butch Adams, I'm proof.
- 38:15Speaker 4: Look at me. I was young when I come here
- 38:18Speaker 4: with you three year ago. I was young like that
- 38:22Speaker 4: little girl that is here just now. I wasn't as
- 38:25Speaker 4: party as her, but I was young like her. Look
- 38:29Speaker 4: at me.
- 38:29Speaker 5: Now you're talking, you're putting words together. Well good are
- 38:36Speaker 5: they to me? They won't save my neck from hanging.
- 38:40Speaker 5: You got to help me. If you got to talk,
- 38:45Speaker 5: tell me what to do. The sheriff will be coming here.
- 38:49Speaker 5: What a less say to him? There ain't nothing to
- 38:52Speaker 5: say to him unless you help me. I got a plan,
- 38:57Speaker 5: Not that boy. You gotta help me. They don't care
- 39:02Speaker 5: who they hang in this country. One man's as good
- 39:06Speaker 5: as another for hanging. They don't care. But I do.
- 39:12Speaker 5: I care for hanging. Got to be.
- 39:15Speaker 4: Someone else, not that boy.
- 39:20Speaker 5: That boy, it's got to be him. It's got to
- 39:25Speaker 5: be him killed Jim Dorry.
- 39:29Speaker 4: They'll never believe he'd done it.
- 39:31Speaker 5: They'll believe it.
- 39:33Speaker 4: Jim Dorry must have told him befo he died, who
- 39:35Speaker 4: done it?
- 39:37Speaker 5: That don't prove it. My words as good as his.
- 39:42Speaker 5: Jim might have made a mistake. In the dark woods.
- 39:45Speaker 5: You couldn't see so well, not even if it had
- 39:49Speaker 5: been daylight. Maybe somebody else done.
- 39:53Speaker 4: It, Not that boy, that boy.
- 39:57Speaker 8: I tell you no, but.
- 40:01Speaker 5: Shut up.
- 40:03Speaker 4: I can't let you. You don't know what you're doing doing.
- 40:09Speaker 5: I'm saving my neck, That's what I'm doing.
- 40:13Speaker 4: You're losing it. If you get that boy hung, you
- 40:16Speaker 4: hanging yourself, you'd tell on me.
- 40:20Speaker 5: Damn you, I ought to kill.
- 40:23Speaker 4: You, Kill me then, coward? Don't you know? If I've
- 40:28Speaker 4: done what's right, I'd tell on you now, I'd give
- 40:31Speaker 4: you up to the law for the brute you are
- 40:33Speaker 4: and let you hang as you'd ought to hang. Why
- 40:37Speaker 4: don't I? Yes, why don't I? Because I'm a fool.
- 40:42Speaker 4: That's why I'm like all the women in the world
- 40:46Speaker 4: that's ever lived. I ain't good, I ain't decent. I
- 40:50Speaker 4: ain't even honest, except to one man. I hate you?
- 40:54Speaker 5: Oh you do? Hey?
- 40:56Speaker 6: Well, what is it you mean?
- 41:00Speaker 5: If I get that boy home? How will that be?
- 41:03Speaker 5: Hanging myself?
- 41:05Speaker 4: Wasn't you ever young?
- 41:07Speaker 5: What's that got to do with it?
- 41:10Speaker 4: Wasn't you ever just start in life? Wasn't you ever
- 41:14Speaker 4: innocent and good and wanting to go out into the
- 41:18Speaker 4: world and expecting it to be kind to you. No,
- 41:22Speaker 4: then you won't understand this boy. Is that a way?
- 41:27Speaker 4: You can't kill a thing like that. If you killed him,
- 41:31Speaker 4: you'd be killing what is good in you. Once, if
- 41:34Speaker 4: there's ever anything.
- 41:36Speaker 5: You're preaching, let up. What'd you think this is? It's
- 41:41Speaker 5: got to be the way I say, Ellie, if I
- 41:43Speaker 5: want to save my neck, I gotta throw the blame
- 41:45Speaker 5: on someone else, not that boy.
- 41:48Speaker 4: I'll tell you another reason why. If you'd have looked
- 41:52Speaker 4: at him, you'd know the reason yourself. Anybody, even the sheriff,
- 41:56Speaker 4: of looking at him would know that that boy couldn't
- 41:59Speaker 4: do nothing wrong. He couldn't kill a man, allie. He
- 42:04Speaker 4: couldn't even hurt anyone's feelings. And besides, his story is
- 42:09Speaker 4: as good as yourn. They know what he said was
- 42:12Speaker 4: the truth. You got to try some other plan, butch,
- 42:16Speaker 4: you got to try to get away. You got to
- 42:18Speaker 4: sneak out in the woods and hide a day or two.
- 42:21Speaker 4: I'll take your grub to eat some way. Then when
- 42:24Speaker 4: things blows over more, we'll light out for Texas till
- 42:28Speaker 4: they forget all about us. You could hide close to
- 42:31Speaker 4: the old sawmill somewheres, they'd never think of looking there
- 42:36Speaker 4: for you, so near, so near where Jim, hurry up? Now?
- 42:41Speaker 1: She crosses and gets his gun.
- 42:44Speaker 4: You ain't got much time. Take your gun. Don't use
- 42:48Speaker 4: it unless you have to promise me. I want you
- 42:50Speaker 4: to be safe.
- 42:52Speaker 1: She offers him the gun.
- 42:54Speaker 5: No, put the gun back, butch, you took it away
- 43:00Speaker 5: from me once.
- 43:02Speaker 4: You're not gonna give yourself up, but you know you'll
- 43:05Speaker 4: be hung.
- 43:06Speaker 5: You said they'd never believe that boy done it.
- 43:09Speaker 4: Eh, yes, they won't. They'll know he couldn't.
- 43:13Speaker 5: And they'll believe him. Eh. His story'll be better than mine.
- 43:17Speaker 4: Eh, they'll know it's the truth.
- 43:21Speaker 5: I believe you.
- 43:22Speaker 4: Then, why don't you go before the sheriff comes.
- 43:26Speaker 5: I ain't going.
- 43:28Speaker 4: You ain't giving yourself up, but you mustn't. It's wrong
- 43:32Speaker 4: of me to say it. You've broke the laws, you've
- 43:35Speaker 4: sold whiskey, you've killed a man. You'd ought to suffer
- 43:39Speaker 4: for it, But you mustn't. You gotta go quick face time.
- 43:44Speaker 4: I'll leave you grub every day by the foot log
- 43:47Speaker 4: that's been washed up by the creek. I'll keep a
- 43:50Speaker 4: lookout when it's safe.
- 43:52Speaker 5: I ain't going. I ain't gonna give myself up neither.
- 43:58Speaker 5: I got a plan, And if you try to bundle it,
- 44:03Speaker 5: if you try to put your nose in or even
- 44:06Speaker 5: open your mouth, I'll kill you. Do you hear? You
- 44:13Speaker 5: know I will too.
- 44:16Speaker 4: What are you gonna do?
- 44:18Speaker 5: Put that gun back? Put it back, I say.
- 44:23Speaker 1: She crosses reluctantly and is putting the gun back in
- 44:26Speaker 1: the bunk. The door is kicked open viciously. Three men
- 44:31Speaker 1: with pistols in their hands eye them from the high threshold.
- 44:36Speaker 1: It is the sheriff and his deputies.
- 44:39Speaker 6: Two of em. Keep your eye on the woman blank.
- 44:43Speaker 1: To Butch, put em up. The men come down into
- 44:48Speaker 1: the room. The sheriff is a florid faced man with
- 44:52Speaker 1: a long mustache.
- 44:55Speaker 6: Search him, Joe.
- 44:57Speaker 1: Joe comes over, makes a quick search of Butch and
- 45:00Speaker 1: finding nothing.
- 45:02Speaker 6: No gun, Eh, Mike Suowjo. We don't want to take
- 45:06Speaker 6: no chances.
- 45:08Speaker 5: They ain't on sheriff all right.
- 45:11Speaker 6: Keep your gun on him, to Butch. Guess you know
- 45:16Speaker 6: what we want you for. Adams. Your name's Adams, ain't
- 45:20Speaker 6: it Butch?
- 45:22Speaker 5: Adams? Sheriff.
- 45:23Speaker 6: You've killed a man.
- 45:26Speaker 5: I don't know what you're talking about. Combusting into my
- 45:32Speaker 5: house this way? What right.
- 45:34Speaker 6: Have you got dry up?
- 45:37Speaker 5: You gotta warrant?
- 45:39Speaker 6: Warrant?
- 45:40Speaker 5: Hell, you got no right here? How to shoot you down?
- 45:46Speaker 6: Shoot? What are you shoot with? Strikes me as funny.
- 45:50Speaker 6: You got no shooting iron on you, and you just
- 45:53Speaker 6: murdering men in cold blood.
- 45:56Speaker 5: I never I don't know what you're talking about.
- 46:01Speaker 6: We won't argue with you.
- 46:04Speaker 5: Show me your warn.
- 46:06Speaker 6: They ain't no warrant.
- 46:09Speaker 5: Well, I'll have the law on you.
- 46:12Speaker 6: I am the law. Let's go so funny about you
- 46:16Speaker 6: having no gun. I don't understand.
- 46:20Speaker 1: Plank suddenly to Ellie.
- 46:23Speaker 7: Stand where you air? Get away from that bunk. Let
- 46:27Speaker 7: me see what you were doing.
- 46:29Speaker 1: He turns back the cover and finds the pistol.
- 46:33Speaker 7: That's what you're up to?
- 46:34Speaker 6: Ah, what is it? Blank?
- 46:38Speaker 7: She is reaching for a gun. I thought there is
- 46:41Speaker 7: something funny when we come in. She seemed to be
- 46:43Speaker 7: abandon over, like she is hunting something.
- 46:46Speaker 1: Sheriff taking the pistol.
- 46:49Speaker 6: So that's it. Do butch, you didn't have time to
- 46:54Speaker 6: get hold of it, did you? Said? Lucky we kicked
- 46:59Speaker 6: the door open.
- 47:01Speaker 4: He didn't do it.
- 47:02Speaker 5: I ain't been out of the house.
- 47:05Speaker 4: Don't you take him. He ain't done nothing.
- 47:09Speaker 5: I ain't done nothing. If Jim Dorry said.
- 47:12Speaker 6: My name Jim Dorry? Eh, who said anything about Jim Dorry?
- 47:19Speaker 6: I guess you've told on yourself. Why never you fixed yourself?
- 47:26Speaker 6: Now look around, Joe, I'll watch him. There ought to
- 47:31Speaker 6: be evidence too.
- 47:33Speaker 1: Joe begins in search of the room over by the bunks.
- 47:37Speaker 1: He crosses to the fireplace.
- 47:40Speaker 5: Don't see nothing, You won't find nothing.
- 47:44Speaker 4: Here's a pan, bloody water, sheriff.
- 47:48Speaker 1: Let's see it, Joe bringing it over.
- 47:52Speaker 5: He washed his hands.
- 47:54Speaker 6: You got him bloody? Did you putting Jim back in
- 47:58Speaker 6: the buggy? Oh? He told he had time to get
- 48:03Speaker 6: out a word or two before he died. Well, we
- 48:06Speaker 6: got evidence, got you now where we want you.
- 48:12Speaker 5: Sure, I'll tell you.
- 48:15Speaker 6: It's time you told me.
- 48:18Speaker 5: I'll tell you who done it? My brother he done it.
- 48:23Speaker 5: But he's crazy. He runs wild here in the woods.
- 48:28Speaker 1: He ain't right.
- 48:30Speaker 6: What's this?
- 48:32Speaker 5: He lives with us, my brother. He must have heard
- 48:37Speaker 5: of him.
- 48:38Speaker 7: I've heard of a crazy boy here in the woods. Sureff,
- 48:42Speaker 7: But that don't prove nothing. You hear funny stories about
- 48:46Speaker 7: these woods here.
- 48:48Speaker 6: That's Kelly say, that's crazy boy live here with you, yes,
- 48:55Speaker 6: and sleeps here?
- 48:57Speaker 4: Yes, Sleepstar points to the top.
- 49:01Speaker 1: Bove sheriff to butch.
- 49:04Speaker 6: He's your brother, eh.
- 49:07Speaker 5: Yes, names Adams two like mine. I'll tell you. I
- 49:13Speaker 5: can't protect him. I tried. He went out last night.
- 49:18Speaker 5: I didn't know why. He goes out rooms in the
- 49:20Speaker 5: woods all the time. Lately he's got to mumbling something
- 49:23Speaker 5: like this, Uh, woods is too ful, Woods is too
- 49:28Speaker 5: fool people. I've heard him ask elly.
- 49:33Speaker 4: Oh he did. He said that people too many people.
- 49:38Speaker 4: There's room in the lake. There's room there, there's room
- 49:42Speaker 4: in the lake. It's big, it's deep.
- 49:46Speaker 1: Oh, buries her face in her hands.
- 49:50Speaker 5: She liked him. He is my brother. Last night he
- 49:55Speaker 5: went out, come in this morning early. It was him.
- 49:59Speaker 5: It was him killed Dorry. He told me, met him
- 50:02Speaker 5: in the woods, stuck a knife in him. He washed
- 50:05Speaker 5: his hands. There was a blood on him. He throwed
- 50:09Speaker 5: his coat under the bunk. There's a blood on it.
- 50:12Speaker 5: He went out again.
- 50:15Speaker 6: Where is he? Where'd he go to?
- 50:18Speaker 5: Don't ask me?
- 50:21Speaker 6: Tell me quick. Where is he in the lake?
- 50:27Speaker 4: I'd swear he's at in the lake drowned.
- 50:33Speaker 5: No, no, no, he ain't sure. He's on the lake,
- 50:38Speaker 5: but in a boat.
- 50:41Speaker 6: We'll get him. He won't get away.
- 50:44Speaker 5: You won't get him not alive. You won't. You'll have
- 50:48Speaker 5: to be careful if you want to go near him.
- 50:50Speaker 5: He's got a gun.
- 50:52Speaker 6: We'll get him.
- 50:54Speaker 5: He's crazy, he'll shoot, he'll shoot first.
- 51:00Speaker 4: Sureff no, no, don't do it. Don't listen to him.
- 51:05Speaker 5: Be careful, Sheriff.
- 51:07Speaker 6: I ain't scared him.
- 51:09Speaker 5: He's a girl with him, a girl he run into

- 52:13Speaker 1: He goes out.
- 52:15Speaker 4: What made you?
- 52:17Speaker 5: You told me yourself? No, that about your brother. That
- 52:22Speaker 5: put me wise. No one else knows he's been drounded.
- 52:27Speaker 4: Why do you do it? You could have said he
- 52:29Speaker 4: got drowned this morning, that I believed it. Why do
- 52:33Speaker 4: you say it was on the lake?
- 52:36Speaker 5: I got reasons.
- 52:37Speaker 4: What are they?
- 52:39Speaker 5: You must have noticed Ellie. The girl was here with
- 52:44Speaker 5: that boy. They'd come here together.
- 52:48Speaker 4: What of it?
- 52:50Speaker 5: The horse and the buggies up here aways. She's young,
- 52:55Speaker 5: she's pretty. They drove here together. She'll need someone to

- 53:21Speaker 1: He goes up these steps, but she hurries after him.

- 1:04:13Speaker 3: Bud Bickley was coming early by ourselves. They might wonder
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: about us or wait for us.
- 1:04:20Speaker 2: They won't wait.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: They're starting to fire, smokes are rising good. It's a
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: coming off the ground and rising up like a cloud.
- 1:04:28Speaker 3: We ought to be there. Miss Meridith might worry about us.
- 1:04:33Speaker 2: She wouldn't worry about us. She wouldn't worry about no one. Please, Lloyd,
- 1:04:37Speaker 2: let's go out on the lake a little while, just
- 1:04:40Speaker 2: for a little.
- 1:04:42Speaker 3: What is it?
- 1:04:43Speaker 2: Nothing?
- 1:04:44Speaker 3: Tell me?
- 1:04:46Speaker 2: Oh, them that cabin, them people, that man. I'm afeared
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: of him. He's a part of these woods here, he's
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: part of this.
- 1:04:54Speaker 6: I don't like it.
- 1:04:55Speaker 2: It's busy, busy, it's doing something I can't understand. They
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: ain't nothing clear to me. Why'd he look at me?
- 1:05:02Speaker 2: That a way. Why'd he want me to boy a
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: coat to keep warm? Why'd he stir up the far
- 1:05:08Speaker 2: for me?
- 1:05:09Speaker 9: Why did he?
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: Why?
- 1:05:12Speaker 3: Betty, he is only being nice to you.
- 1:05:15Speaker 6: He liked you.
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: People like you. You're sweet, you're purty.
- 1:05:21Speaker 2: No, it ain't that, it's something else. I don't understand it.
- 1:05:25Speaker 2: I'm feared. I'm too young.
- 1:05:27Speaker 3: It's wrong to be young, Betty.
- 1:05:30Speaker 2: Why here his eyes are burning, his teeth like an
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: animal's Betty. He's a part of these woods here. He
- 1:05:40Speaker 2: belongs here.
- 1:05:42Speaker 6: I don't.
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: I don't belong here. You don't. We're too young. There's
- 1:05:46Speaker 2: something going on, something mean, somethin awful. It ain't for
- 1:05:51Speaker 2: us to be part of. We got to get away.
- 1:05:55Speaker 3: We'll go on the lake.
- 1:05:57Speaker 2: Oh, yes, we'll go on the lake. Then where'll we.
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: Go to across the lake or down to the other end.
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: We can get a stack to eat at Bangham's. We'll
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: do that and then row home. We won't come back
- 1:06:13Speaker 3: here to the woods if you don't want to.
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: We couldn't just stay in the middle of the lake.
- 1:06:19Speaker 3: Awhile, course we could for a while, but you'd be hungry,
- 1:06:25Speaker 3: you'd be cold out there too. After a while, the
- 1:06:28Speaker 3: wind blows.
- 1:06:29Speaker 2: All around the lake. Everywhere they's woods. The lake goes
- 1:06:33Speaker 2: out and it's clear, thoar and bright. But it touches
- 1:06:37Speaker 2: the woods everywhere at the edges. Oh, they ain't no
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: place to go to the lake. It touches the woods.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: It's a part of the woods.
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: She sinks down, Lloyd kneeling.
- 1:06:50Speaker 3: No, No, it ain't, Betty, you're jest upset. It'll be
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: nice out though, It'll be bright and clear, maybe it'll
- 1:06:58Speaker 3: be warm, will stay as long as you want to.
- 1:07:02Speaker 3: You mustn't be this way, don't you see, Betty? Oh,
- 1:07:05Speaker 3: I know you're just upset. You've saw things you don't understand.
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: You've been skeered. It's all right now. You mustn't think
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: everything's mixed up like this, like these woods out there.
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: Look at it.
- 1:07:22Speaker 3: Look at the lake, sun touching it, little waves starting
- 1:07:27Speaker 3: in the wind breakin here on the bank, an ripples, trees,
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: willers leaning down like they is, preying at the edges.
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: I wish I could be a lake. I wish I
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: could be that big, that deep. I wish I could
- 1:07:41Speaker 3: be catchin the sun like it and sparkling and singing
- 1:07:45Speaker 3: and never a fearin a nothin', just a settin there
- 1:07:49Speaker 3: wide in the sunshine, A lookin' up at the sky,
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: A lookin up at the sun, Betty, looking up at him.
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: You make it nice, No, tain't me.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: You make it nicer an it is.
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: No, it looks that way to me. It's that a
- 1:08:09Speaker 3: way to me too, Betty.
- 1:08:11Speaker 2: When you say it, you make things nicer than they are.
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: No, I make of the way they are in the lake.
- 1:08:20Speaker 3: It's a deep pool. It's quiet, it moves when the
- 1:08:25Speaker 3: wind moves. It holds the sun. It's a cup with
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: gold in it, and dawn and sunset and shatters and
- 1:08:34Speaker 3: starlight and the moon burning red. Come on, why do
- 1:08:38Speaker 3: we stay on the bank. We'll go out.
- 1:08:42Speaker 1: He climbs into the boat.
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: Yes, on the lake.
- 1:08:47Speaker 2: I hear something.
- 1:08:48Speaker 3: It's footsteps. Somebody's running.
- 1:08:52Speaker 2: They're coming this way.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: Feel the woods, Lloyd, sh let's go quick, be still,
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: they won't see us.
- 1:09:04Speaker 1: A boy rushes in headlong from the woods at the left.
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: He is almost out of sight. Right when he catches
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: sight of the two in the boat. He stops. His
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: face is coarse, A grin like an idiot's spreads over
- 1:09:20Speaker 1: his face. It is the Davis boy. Hai, I didn't
