- 0:00As Have you been watching Traitors?
- 0:02Yes. Do you watch the final?
- 0:05Yeah, I've just like I was. I was behind because I just
- 0:08started watching it for the first time.
- 0:10Same. Yeah.
- 0:11Yeah, I I watched this season. I started last Sunday.
- 0:15Was it Steve? Yeah, you've done it in like a
- 0:17week, Ash, and caught up for the final.
- 0:19Wow, OK. I was really disappointed.
- 0:21I was so disappointed. That what did you want to
- 0:24happen? For for us.
- 0:26For us had it. He had it.
- 0:27I know Oh every idiot. It was just it was just like
- 0:31what's wrong with you? He's he's worked it out your
- 0:33mates with him. He's like he's told you that you
- 0:36want to end with you 2 and then what are you doing?
- 0:40Yeah, he flocked. What he he melt with?
- 0:43Yeah, he melted like Arsenal. So yeah, I was, I was teamed for
- 0:49us. Especially after hearing what he
- 0:50wanted to do with the money. Yeah.
- 0:52Would have been cool. Yeah, really good.
- 0:55Yeah, and Stephen could have stitched up Rachel, but he
- 0:59bottled it, didn't he? I think he was scared of.
- 1:02Her one he would he would be scared of her but also I think I
- 1:07think the way he would have felt is he couldn't he couldn't have
- 1:10lived with himself That's all it was versus the money so he.
- 1:14Was so nervous, like every episode it's like I think I've
- 1:17made a mistake. That's what I mean like.
- 1:21He later. On traitor and I don't know why
- 1:23he never got voted out. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:26So many of them were like, yeah, Stephen's a traitor, but yeah,
- 1:30he never got enough votes. Yeah, disappoint, really
- 1:34disappointed with the people on that show that they let the two
- 1:38traitors win. It got go all the way.
- 1:41Yeah. But like, it was just, it was
- 1:43disappointing because there were enough people who called them
- 1:45out. Yeah, everyone else was like
- 1:49ignoring it. It was ridiculous.
- 1:52Even that barrister was just directly.
- 1:54Well, I know it's you, Rachel. Yeah, that was funny when she
- 1:57was in, when she was talking to them in the confession and
- 1:59she's. Like confession me was
- 2:00hilarious. I know you're there, Rachel.
- 2:02It was quite. Funny and her face.
- 2:05Yeah, tell you what, I might have just solved something.
- 2:11Reuben Amrim was a traitor. I told you sure already.
- 2:14That was my I think I've had this theory.
- 2:15Oh yeah, undercover. That was it for Sheikh Jaseem.
- 2:18Exactly. The mole.
- 2:35Let's kick it off. I'm Steve and I'm joined by Ash
- 2:39and us. It's been a couple of weeks
- 2:41since we caught up as you've not been on since the Michael
- 2:44Carrick resurgence started this weekend.
- 2:48Manchester United won 32 at the Emirates against Arsenal.
- 2:52Did they? Oh, Oh yes, Oh yes, Oh yes.
- 2:55We do love a win at the Emirates in the black kit.
- 2:58We warn them Gooners pre match, didn't we, that we're turning up
- 3:01in the black kit like you today, Ash.
- 3:03But yeah, as Michael Carrick, what has he done to this team?
- 3:09It's crazy, isn't it? Like you always we talked about
- 3:11we need some some vibes, right? We need, we need some better
- 3:14vibes. Nothing like an old, you know,
- 3:19is legends. Probably too strong a word for
- 3:21Carrick. Is it, isn't it legends?
- 3:25I mean, I he's nothing great. Yeah, he's a.
- 3:28No, he's a legend. You know, we have to have, we
- 3:31need a tie ring system. Yeah, Darren Fletcher was called
- 3:34a legend. So Darren Fletcher, that's what
- 3:36I mean. He's not a legend.
- 3:37Oh, no, he's not even a great. He's a great servant.
- 3:40Just I think Rooney mentioned this recently.
- 3:44So there's only two players that have ever won the Premier
- 3:47League, the FA Cup, the League Cup, the Champions League, the
- 3:50Europa League and the Club World Cup.
- 3:53If you want to count that. One of them is Wayne Rooney.
- 3:55The other one's Michael Carrick. Carrick was a key cog in Unite,
- 3:59one of United's best teams ever. The top you're wearing there,
- 4:02Ashley Carrick, was key in that team, Yeah.
- 4:05This is in homage to him and the death of Arsenal's title
- 4:09challenge, so I hope you're listening.
- 4:12Carry on, us. But he's definitely legend.
- 4:14Yeah, I think at the time though, do you remember when I
- 4:17was discussing this like, oh, Carrick's under under
- 4:20appreciated by our fan base as a player?
- 4:24As a player, yeah, I think people look back and because of
- 4:29that, we've never haven't solved that midfield problem.
- 4:31Like, Oh yeah, yeah, that's a player.
- 4:34You know, we had like 6 months of Matic doing it.
- 4:37Apart from that, no one really having that sort of holding and
- 4:40controlling role. But yeah, he's he's brought the
- 4:45the feel good factor back. I think he simply simplified the
- 4:49tactics. And he's also, we talked about
- 4:51Ruben being unlucky. He's also got a bit lucky as
- 4:54well, which is good because he's come in just as all of the key
- 4:57players have come back from AF Con Martinez and McGuire back in
- 5:00the centre back positions. Not, you know, the likes of
- 5:02Heaven and Euro, for example. But and also we generally, you
- 5:11know, historically have been up for a big game anyway, but
- 5:15you're going to be up for a big game with the new manager that
- 5:18also somewhat suits our players right to have that sort of more
- 5:24mid block style and then and and be aggressive.
- 5:27So he's done everything right. They came up with a good plan
- 5:30that works against his opposition.
- 5:33Big tests to come right where we're going to now face Ash's
- 5:37mate Marco Silva is going to put more a block on.
- 5:40Can they break the block down Portuguese wall?
- 5:42Yeah, but for these two games, everyone was up for it.
- 5:46I thought Old Trafford, rock rocking against City and the
- 5:50Emirates is, you know, a place that we've had, we've had good
- 5:54memories, right? So.
- 5:56There's a lot of nervous energy in the Emirates, Ash, right?
- 5:59You could feel that from during the game.
- 6:01I think, you know, Gary Neville picked up on it.
- 6:04You could, yeah. Just feel it like it was
- 6:06slightly nervous from quite early in the game.
- 6:09But you know what? I obviously don't watch Arsenal
- 6:11week in, week out, especially at the Emirates.
- 6:13But when I was watching the first half, yeah, it sounded
- 6:17like a morgue, to be honest. That's normal, especially when I
- 6:19go there. But the cheers when they get a
- 6:23corner, Oh my God. Like, I was like, have they
- 6:28scored a goal already? I mean, and yeah, they've got
- 6:31songs apparently about the set pieces.
- 6:34So yeah, we might as just call them Set Piece FCI.
- 6:37Saw a start. I don't, I don't know if it's
- 6:39true. I mean, I think it's true that
- 6:41they're 17th in the league. Both open play goals.
- 6:44That is mental. There's also a start along the
- 6:47lines of when they score with a set piece, they win like most of
- 6:54the time. Like I, I think it's as high as
- 6:56like 90% for this season. But yeah.
- 7:00I don't know, I really don't like it.
- 7:02I don't understand why refs allow it because it's one thing
- 7:07being good at set pieces, but it just seems like a rugby scrum in
- 7:10there, yeah. Everyone I.
- 7:12Mean. It's ridiculous.
- 7:14It's not football. And it was like 7 players like
- 7:17on the goal line every in the second.
- 7:19For me, the ball comes in. If I was a ref, I'd just blow up
- 7:22and be like, well, there was definitely a foul in there
- 7:24somewhere. Because this is just not, this
- 7:26is not, you know, when we when we play football is that
- 7:29everyone rugby tackle everyone. Don't you just try and win a
- 7:32header like you, you, you get touched tight you, but you don't
- 7:36the the amount of like grabbing and holding and shoving.
- 7:40It's just just. The thing is, it's like it's
- 7:42not, it's not both Bolton Wanderers, is it?
- 7:44Like you look at Arsenal's squad, it's not like they have
- 7:46to do that. No, but just quickly on set
- 7:48pieces like this is a trend that actually started last season
- 7:52with like especially within swinging corners.
- 7:54So it's obviously a technique that players with tech as like a
- 7:58Cunya like Wolves against an honour or Declan Rice's
- 8:01perfected over the last like couple of years.
- 8:03So it's definitely a ball hitting skill.
- 8:05It kind of was like actually reminiscent of this shirt.
- 8:09You remember when Ronaldo put the valve at the top when he
- 8:12done a free kick and then Drogba started doing it.
- 8:15And this feels like the new the new trend over the last like
- 8:18year because like other teams, I've seen them take corners and
- 8:21I'm like, wow, the in swing that they can get on these balls.
- 8:25So it's obviously something that I've been working on.
- 8:28I don't mind that. I think that's that's good skill
- 8:32right now. But the actual delivery I really
- 8:34appreciate. But it's the it's crowding the
- 8:36goalkeeper. Yeah, but it's a set play that
- 8:39everyone's clearly doing, right? Even I just think it should be
- 8:42blown up as fouls. Yeah, yeah.
- 8:44I mean, I'm, you know, these types of goals.
- 8:49Is it a foul? Is it a foul, though?
- 8:51Like it's like, let's just take Pete Jose because like he's a
- 8:55Dark arts manager that will do anything to win.
- 8:58And if you can, crowd the goalkeeper.
- 9:00If you stand around the goalkeeper and do nothing, I
- 9:03have no. Issue with it, fine.
- 9:05OK, you're saying? No issue with standing and
- 9:07standing your ground, but there's a lot of likes using
- 9:10your body weight and pushing people.
- 9:13Right. Bolton Wanderers.
- 9:14Stokes. And so they're they're all
- 9:15shoving each other and it's just like, come on, this is this is a
- 9:20bit silly. I mean, I don't watch Arsene in
- 9:22the Champions League. It'd be interesting to know that
- 9:23they do the same thing and they get away with it because I don't
- 9:28like it. I think they, you know, I would
- 9:31rather watch a proper game of football.
- 9:34And if their whole thing is just you, let's get a corner, let's
- 9:37cheer that and then let's try and rugby tackle the ball over
- 9:40the net. Into the net then you know, that
- 9:43shouldn't be awarded with it's not that you know, we don't want
- 9:46the Premier League champions being 17 the next open play
- 9:49goals. I've got to say though, like I
- 9:52want to talk way more about Michael Carrick than Arsenal,
- 9:55but like I did see Arsenal and I was just looking at them
- 9:58thinking they're like a very efficient David Moyes better
- 10:03version team like and and to Steve's point, like the players
- 10:07that they've actually got, they should be doing way more.
- 10:10There was a lot of square passes, you know, no line
- 10:13breaking passes, even like body movement.
- 10:16They weren't going into the spaces in the pockets like
- 10:19soccer. I know he had a major injury
- 10:21with the hamstring. Even he looks like his body
- 10:24movement is more efficient because of the hamstring problem
- 10:29that he had or major injury that he had.
- 10:31Like, he doesn't look like he's really getting into his stride
- 10:36and, you know, like that extra degree that you need, like in
- 10:39your running. It feels like he's just too
- 10:41efficient and therefore he's just like circulating the ball
- 10:45compared to say, two years ago, You remember that cracking game
- 10:49that they won against us where Rashford scored and like soccer,
- 10:53scored an absolute belter in the second-half that that's not the
- 10:56soccer of today. Yeah I mean if you see the stats
- 11:00for their attackers as well, like sackers not scored in 13
- 11:03appearances in all comps. My mate Victor Yokores 0 non
- 11:07penalty goals and 11 appearances.
- 11:10Still pay 100 million for him, Steve.
- 11:13Probably because he he might have delivered for us.
- 11:15Especially under Michael Carrick.
- 11:18Martinelli 0 in 13. Yeah, it's just like.
- 11:22I think five goals is their top goal scorer, right?
- 11:25And I think own goals is is it second or third?
- 11:28Yeah, and obviously, Speaking of own goals, that's where the game
- 11:31started with Martinez, right? I'm sure somewhere Nikki, Bart
- 11:36and pool skulls were ready to pile in on their next podcast.
- 11:39But yeah, just a crap goal to concede.
- 11:42Like it felt like Martinez was too busy.
- 11:45You know, like hustling and bustling.
- 11:48Again, there was a lot. Gary was a bit harsh on him to
- 11:51be honest. The what the the biggest mistake
- 11:55he made was missing the ball. Apart from that, like being
- 11:58touched tight with timber giving his size as well.
- 12:01I don't think it's like the biggest defensive error I've
- 12:03seen ever kind of thing. And he had a great game guys
- 12:06thing. He was brilliant.
- 12:08Harry Maguire, Unbelievable. That is by far one of the best
- 12:12games I've ever seen Harry Maguire have like he's because
- 12:15not only did he do backs to the wall defending great in the air,
- 12:18he actually stepped out and like was marking and intercepting
- 12:23brilliantly. He even created a chance when we
- 12:26were one nil down because he pushed up.
- 12:28So he was excellent. They were both good.
- 12:30I think Martinez with the distribution like the line
- 12:33breaking balls was really good. But obviously when you go one
- 12:36nil down early at the Emirates, you're starting to think, oh,
- 12:39you know, could be in trouble here.
- 12:41But then to get the equaliser pretty quickly as like and boom,
- 12:45obviously a mistake from Arsenal trying to play it out from the
- 12:47back, but he took it well and got us back in the game.
- 12:51The key to the goal? Let's compare these two teams.
- 12:54Which team was more on the front foot with the press that came
- 12:57from pressure? Yeah, right.
- 12:58If we've if you don't watch Arsenal against us, we were calm
- 13:02playing it out. Martinez and McGuire weren't
- 13:05under pressure. We put them under pressure.
- 13:08Super Mendy, if he if he has all the time in the world, he never
- 13:12makes that mistake. And Bumo's there to to get get
- 13:16on that ball and then class finish.
- 13:19Like, yeah, class finish. So.
- 13:21Calm. Took it well.
- 13:23And if you look at it, you know, three goal scorers right in Bumo
- 13:27Cunya dawg. I was coming.
- 13:34I was. Preparing for this all day.
- 13:36Yeah, Jim's done a good job, isn't he there?
- 13:38With this way we can't do it, isn't it?
- 13:40With like Premier League proven and we.
- 13:42Talked, we talked, you know, I said, look, we have paid too
- 13:45much for him, yes, but he's a quality player and you put, and
- 13:48This is why I'm like having him back from AFCON makes a big
- 13:51difference because he's in my opinion the second best player
- 13:55in the team. And you get him back in the
- 13:57team, then you're going to get goals.
- 14:01Yeah, I just wanted to touch on the press because as makes a
- 14:05good point, the goal speaks for itself.
- 14:07But we had two chances even before that, and that's all
- 14:10because of pressing. And it's not like Jurgen Klopp
- 14:13style, you know, metal, you know, heavy metal pressing,
- 14:17right? It's smart, Michael Carrick
- 14:19style pressing, like cutting passing angles and passing
- 14:24lanes, right, all the boring technical stuff.
- 14:26But like these intricate details is what's so important.
- 14:30And we'll talk about it later when we're talking about Carrick
- 14:32staff, because I've I feel like I've seen an impact with the
- 14:36staff that he's got in place there as well.
- 14:38But obviously, Steve, like you know, once we get it back to
- 14:41one, one what you think and then.
- 14:44Well, I was just going to give Carrick credit as well for
- 14:46actually playing in Boomer up top, which he did obviously in
- 14:49the Derby and at the Emirates and obviously paid off.
- 14:51So credit to Carrick for that. But yeah, one all I just like,
- 14:54yeah, because we got the equaliser pretty quickly.
- 14:57You know, you're buzzing off that and starting to dream about
- 15:00getting the getting the lead off off Arsenal.
- 15:04So it was just after the second-half, wasn't it?
- 15:07So I actually had Raffy to myself.
- 15:10So I was rushing his bath and I had the phone, the game on my
- 15:14phone. So I was doing Raffi's bath as
- 15:16Dorgu scored. I mean, what a strike.
- 15:19Like have you heard the new nicknames as Balon Balon, Dorgu
- 15:23as soon as the next Gareth Bale? Who, who, who?
- 15:26Who first said he was the next Gareth Bale?
- 15:29You, you love, you love your WhatsApp history, don't you,
- 15:32Steve? Yeah, you should search for bail
- 15:34in our WhatsApp. Group Can you get a GIF and put
- 15:37like a? Crown, I think you did say it, I
- 15:39think. You did say it.
- 15:39I mean, I've said it quite jokingly, but I did say if we
- 15:43sign this guy, he's the next guy.
- 15:44Because obviously what happens is you get linked to someone,
- 15:47you start watching YouTube. Yeah.
- 15:49And I was like, oh, he plays a bit on the right wing sometimes
- 15:52for Leche, but he's got this sort of kick and rush game where
- 15:56he just knocks the ball and just runs really fast.
- 15:58And it's like reminds me of Gareth Bell a little bit.
- 16:02He's not shown it for a, you know, for most of his time
- 16:06because Reuben sucking my wing back.
- 16:08No, but Bale started, remember, as a left back or a left left.
- 16:11Yeah, that he's, he's been able to get up, do the up and down,
- 16:17but. But his final ball hasn't really
- 16:20been good. It hasn't.
- 16:21He hasn't been able to make the right decision and and make the
- 16:23final pass. But the athleticism was always
- 16:26there. Credit to Darren Fletcher to put
- 16:29him on the left against Burnley because I think that's helped
- 16:32him like realise the potential and give him confidence, right,
- 16:36Because he can gallop. And I think you're right in
- 16:39terms of the way the way he actually runs.
- 16:41It is like Bailesque. He's got long legs and it's
- 16:45strides rather than, you know, like I don't know, Ian Robin
- 16:48type runner or Mark over Myers back in the day type of runner.
- 16:52Yeah, but it's it's interesting because everyone's like, oh, I
- 16:55don't like the the back three. It's too defensive.
- 16:57It becomes a back 5, but you kind of had the back 6 because
- 17:03there's Doku and Ahmad who were the traditional wingbacks right
- 17:06in Amaram system and he had four defenders behind them.
- 17:09The shapes better, way better though.
- 17:11Like you can see it's been coached, right?
- 17:13Like that's what I mean like going back to City very quickly.
- 17:17They had three days that performance was outstanding.
- 17:20It's like one of the best performances like in in years,
- 17:24especially given the time period.
- 17:26I'd actually say yesterday was a little bit more scrappy, but
- 17:29Arsenal made it like that. But credit to, you know, both
- 17:32performances like there it wasn't a fluke.
- 17:35Like normally we we've had wins, especially over the last like
- 17:392-3 years. You could say more backs to the
- 17:41wall, but I think Carrick and and the team master class in
- 17:46both games. But also that period, like
- 17:49before Dorgu's goal, like before half time, I think Neville said
- 17:52it going into half time, we started to like we get
- 17:55comfortable I think like 10 minutes before half time.
- 17:58And then even coming out in the second-half, we were knocking it
- 18:00around for like 10/10/15 minutes I think before Dog's goal.
- 18:04Like there was a little move where we had the ball for a bit.
- 18:06So I've not seen us play that confidently like away a big team
- 18:10in a long time. So yeah.
- 18:13Steve Holland training drill, was that?
- 18:15Yeah, I mean, who knows? It's not, it's not that.
- 18:17It's it's it's look. Only because you don't like him.
- 18:22No, no, no, not not that Steve Holland's actually a really good
- 18:26coach. My issue with Steve Holland, and
- 18:28you know, I'm very big fan of England, right?
- 18:30So England, Southgate, Holland, I've never had an issue.
- 18:34My issue with Holland was always would he be too defensive,
- 18:37right, as a as a manager. But when you have, if you've got
- 18:41someone offensive that I think Carrick's got a more offensive
- 18:44minded approach, but also the the defensive scheme work for
- 18:49these two opponents, right. Let's again, let's see if we can
- 18:53break down. But you know, setting, setting
- 18:55up a kind of 442 block. You know, it's not rocket
- 18:59science tactics, but what you need is to give the players the
- 19:04confidence to be able to execute because they these are good
- 19:10players. I've always said these
- 19:11technically good players let the let if you if you sort of let
- 19:17them play, they can play. And that's what we saw.
- 19:20So it's not like, you know, there's some kind of coaching
- 19:23thing. These are just.
- 19:24These are no. I totally disagree because like
- 19:26even with the first game against City Carrick afterwards he
- 19:31talked about how they worked on the shape in terms of
- 19:34compressing space. No, there's defensive side
- 19:37you're we're talking about the attacking game.
- 19:41It's so for example. No, but the the compression
- 19:44helps with the attacking game though, right, because like
- 19:46you're essentially inviting the opposition because you're right,
- 19:51these are two technically, you know, gifted passing teams in
- 19:54City and and arsenal. So you're inviting it to spring
- 19:58on the counter attack, right. So that's why I do think it's
- 20:02more than just vibes or just say like 442 go out there boys and
- 20:07and do it. But like there's got to be a lot
- 20:10what I'm saying because. This is this is sort of, kind of
- 20:13football fundamentals. It's not rocket science.
- 20:16It is, but what I would say is like for modern day players, and
- 20:20we've spoken about this in previous pods, like that's not
- 20:22easy because in our day, play 442.
- 20:25Like I could get you boys and a bunch of other guys from our age
- 20:28group play 442. And actually, yeah, you're
- 20:31right, you probably don't need to do too much.
- 20:33It's a bit like Ancelotti style but modern day players.
- 20:36They need information all the time.
- 20:38Well, did did Ruben make it rocket science then?
- 20:40If it's not rocket science. No, the 44, the 442, the 442 is
- 20:45a really easy system like to play.
- 20:47It's a very, very easy system. It's the easiest system.
- 20:51We've all played it very simple because you have you, you have
- 20:56two, two blocks basically, right, Two banks, there's two
- 20:59banks, there's someone and there's and you work in pairs.
- 21:01That's all it is, right? So and what and all you need to
- 21:04do to make sure it works defensively is your two wingers
- 21:07have to be defensively minded. That's why Dogu and Ahmad,
- 21:10having played wingback, can already do this.
- 21:11So in both games they doubled up on the winger and the the what
- 21:16happens? The ball gets funnelled wide and
- 21:18there there's nowhere to go and then it has to go wide again.
- 21:21So good. Another important point, Steve.
- 21:23Good team selection. Yeah, good team selection.
- 21:26But he's basically, you know, set up in a But what what the
- 21:29point we're talking about is that attacking game, the flair,
- 21:32What, what what it comes that that these are just so when you
- 21:36know, he hasn't coached Bruno to do that sort of that disguised
- 21:40past the the the goal in the city game.
- 21:42That's just genius, right, You know what I mean?
- 21:45That's freedom. It's it's and and and the door
- 21:48goo little. The the goal is just you let you
- 21:50you go, right, you go and go and you know, when we get the ball,
- 21:55go and attack, go hard at them. And that's that positive
- 21:58mentality and a bit of luck because that, you know, hits the
- 22:01bar and goes in and it's the one of the greatest goals.
- 22:05And the. Emirates.
- 22:06It was. It was.
- 22:07It was. An open play it.
- 22:08Was Tony Uboa style for me. It was like the way it hits the
- 22:11bar, yeah, but the way, you know, do you remember that Uboa
- 22:14goal where it kind of like it's sort of flicking around hit to
- 22:17hit? Which goal was that?
- 22:18I've seen that one. The Wimbledon 1.
- 22:20Yeah, it's like it's bouncing around and it's just this whack.
- 22:24It just sits up, yeah. Absolutely bang.
- 22:26Brilliant. Like brilliant.
- 22:28And it's not like somehow he's Carrick's set up fifty of those
- 22:32guns and and he's told Dolgo to do this.
- 22:34It's just a moment of brilliant. But but to give Carrick credit,
- 22:38he's clearly given Dogu confidence.
- 22:40Yeah, won by the whole. Team Steve.
- 22:43But like, you know, just in contrast to Reuben, you know,
- 22:45Reuben was in press conferences talking about Dogu's anxiety out
- 22:50in out in the open. So just to contrast, like the
- 22:52simple things Carrick's done, he's not done, you know,
- 22:56questionable things like that. And clearly these, all these
- 22:58little 1%, two percent feed into the the ultimate outcome, right?
- 23:03So it's just there's a lot of things.
- 23:06It's it's actually something that us loves talking about,
- 23:08especially before we started the pod in the Jose days about like
- 23:12what you say as a manager, like, you know, it's almost like the
- 23:15energy that you project and what it brings to the table.
- 23:19Michael Carrick from Tai one has just been on it.
- 23:22I know he's actually united, but like even his personality, like
- 23:26he's got criticism in our community for being boring, but
- 23:29like he's cool boring. Like the way he plays his
- 23:33football is the way he talks, like he's understated, but a
- 23:36brilliant football brain, right? And that's what's coming across
- 23:39in terms of the way he speaks. He's a statesman.
- 23:41He's talked about how he's looking forward to the
- 23:44challenge. He's up for it.
- 23:45He's not moaning about all the interviews that he's done.
- 23:48It's the complete opposite of Ruben.
- 23:49And like this is nothing against Ruben the person, but it just
- 23:53shows that the job was too big for Ruben.
- 23:56And I do think, Steve, to your point, Carrick deserves a lot of
- 23:59credit for the it's almost like the freedom that he's given the
- 24:03players to not just express themselves, which is massively
- 24:07important, right? Because that's why we saw the
- 24:09goals that we've seen in the last two games.
- 24:11But even concentration levels when defending, like we got a
- 24:14clean sheet against City, like we can get a clean sheet for
- 24:18for, you know, for Toffee. And do you remember I was saying
- 24:20a few weeks ago, like, if you want to see improvements and if
- 24:23you want to see us be able to get Champions League football,
- 24:26you need like that step up. And Carrick, thank God, has been
- 24:29able to do that. You're getting a contract then.
- 24:33We'll come, we'll come on to that, we'll come on to that.
- 24:36But just again, the little things.
- 24:38So like I believe we were two one up when Dorgu got like, you
- 24:42know, cramp or whatever it was and he brings on Chesco for
- 24:45Dorgu. So he brings on an attacker for
- 24:47Dorgu. I'm pretty sure, you know, Ruben
- 24:49wouldn't have done that. So again, that's more in the
- 24:51Fergie mould of like. Substitutions.
- 24:54I interpreted that. I interpreted that as Arteta has
- 25:00got a massive team on the pitch and he needs he needs Cesco to
- 25:04defend corners. Yeah, that's probably, that's
- 25:06probably, yeah, that's probably a factor.
- 25:08But also Cesco on the counter attack.
- 25:10Carrick's probably thinking, I reckon.
- 25:13Yeah, no, but it was he is because he wants a striker.
- 25:16Yeah, it was a good decision. And actually the Cunha goal,
- 25:22Cesco's movement was really good.
- 25:25It dragged the Arsenal back line back and create the space for
- 25:28Cunha. And where was David Raya?
- 25:32I mean, who's like I was? Thinking I was thinking that.
- 25:36I mean, I know, I know, the guy's about 5 foot 2, but I
- 25:39expected him to get a bit. I know I did, I did think that,
- 25:42but just going back to the equaliser again, Ash like
- 25:44another shit goal to concede. Wasn't it just scrappy as hell?
- 25:49Do you know what was annoying about that goal?
- 25:51I think they, I think SAC had a pot shot and what I loved about
- 25:56Le Mans, right? The best thing about Le Mans
- 25:59most of the season is that we don't talk about him, which
- 26:02means he's doing his job. He's like Edwin Vander Sight.
- 26:04He's very close to that. The way he made that save as
- 26:07well with the pot shot, I was like, that's so Edwin, like just
- 26:10get your two hands, real strong hands, push it away.
- 26:13Just get out of the danger zone, right?
- 26:15Total opposite banana. Then with the corner, I was
- 26:19like, oh, these jammy bastards, you know, they just keep in
- 26:22swinging in and like, yeah, look, he got caught under the
- 26:25ball. We've spoken about it already.
- 26:26It's like a rugby scrum. What was annoying about the
- 26:29goal, again, in reference to the shirt I'm wearing, Do you
- 26:32remember, I think it was 2007 or 8 Gallas, it's Patrice Evera
- 26:38squares it to Ronaldo. 2 went up with a few minutes to go and
- 26:42then they go up the other end. Gallas scores and it was very
- 26:45similar in that. Cleared off the.
- 26:47Line off the line. And that was the annoying part
- 26:49of this this goal yesterday was that as soon as the second
- 26:54chance came and Chesco clears it, you can tell you knew it was
- 26:58TV. Yeah, it was obvious.
- 26:59I was just annoying, the delay even.
- 27:03But you know what, that that's what I mean.
- 27:05Like we scored the better goals in this game and I think, you
- 27:09know, you're going to talk about it, right?
- 27:10Let's let's talk about that third goal, Steve.
- 27:13But it's the emotional roller coaster of the game, isn't it?
- 27:15Like going one NIL down. Arsenal.
- 27:17Manchester United. And two, one up, then you think
- 27:19you're throwing it away and that, you know, at 21 I'm
- 27:22starting to already think about the penalties I can start giving
- 27:25the gooners after the game and then obviously concede the goal.
- 27:28And then as your mate Kunya, I think nice little move with
- 27:35Kobe, my man Kobe, Nice little interchange in the middle of the
- 27:40park, Kobe with a little pop off to Kenya.
- 27:42And then, yeah, he's, you know, middle of the goal, 25 yards
- 27:45out. Great finish.
- 27:47But yeah, I did have a question mark about the keeper, but what
- 27:49a moment. I thought going to say you've
- 27:51had a question mark about the celebration.
- 27:52I thought it was. I know he can.
- 27:54He can celebrate like that. Can you dance like that?
- 27:57He can do what he wants. That was brilliant.
- 28:00Oh, it's genius. Just Lingard vibes.
- 28:02And this is the thing he's been having.
- 28:04This is what he's supposed to bring, right?
- 28:06These that that shooting ability hasn't yet come.
- 28:09And I've always said, look, the underlying numbers are there.
- 28:11It's going to turn. And we're seeing it like he came
- 28:16on against city Chain, like really helped close that game
- 28:19out as well. And fair play, because he would
- 28:21have been disappointed to. Not start for the second goal.
- 28:24For Dorgu. For Dorgu.
- 28:25Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and came on here and then
- 28:29he's and he's put the winner away.
- 28:31So confident on the dribble, such a great player to have
- 28:35actually at the at the finish, I think it was it was it did we
- 28:38win at Anfield? Yes, this season, yeah, Maguire.
- 28:42Do do you remember like in the last moment of that?
- 28:44Game as well we were talking about.
- 28:45Get the ball off him. The battling and like, yeah.
- 28:47He's just so he's like, he's just just tenacious with his
- 28:51dribbling. So good.
- 28:53I thought Kobe in both games because I obviously, like you
- 28:56said, I didn't get to talk about the city games.
- 28:58Also excellent in the city game. Also excellent in this game.
- 29:02I think Casimiro as well as rolled back the years.
- 29:05And and I'd give him a new contract if he would be willing
- 29:08to accept if he was willing to accept lower wages or a pay as
- 29:12you play deal squad player for next season and his character.
- 29:16Don't underestimate this stuff. Yeah, good enough for for a for
- 29:20a squad player for sure. He's been, he's been excellent.
- 29:22So I think both of those played really well.
- 29:27And, and, and, and Kobe's just a delight to watch.
- 29:29He's just got this baller swagger about him.
- 29:32Yeah, not Paul Pogba level, yes. But.
- 29:37But you know, still, still just got a lovely, you know who you
- 29:41reminds me of is your mate Modric a bit moderate?
- 29:45Yeah, a little bit of that kind of glides around the pitch and
- 29:48just little little hip movements.
- 29:50Little. Just comfortable on the ball, on
- 29:52the ball in the most pressurised area of the pitch.
- 29:55This. Will really annoy opposition
- 29:57fans. For me he's like a hybrid of
- 29:59like a mod Rich and Clarence seed off the way he can travel
- 30:02with the ball as well in like tight areas.
- 30:05Yeah. In terms of ability, I'm not
- 30:08saying he's obviously that. Covered the most ground in both
- 30:11games. City, Kobe, Mainu.
- 30:12Both games at the Emirates as well.
- 30:14Did he cover? He covered the most ground, you
- 30:15know. So this myth that Reuben
- 30:17projected in his head, at least he can do it.
- 30:20He just needs the right setup. And that's why system is
- 30:23important as it it it was. This podcast is sponsored by Go

- 30:54Any danger they're going to choke this title?
- 30:57I don't think so. I was fairly convinced 2 weeks
- 31:03ago. The pre Liverpool game was that
- 31:07or? Not that it's just City have
- 31:09made a couple of moves in the transfer market and that's the
- 31:13thing they can do. They've gone and got Semenya and
- 31:15Gayie and I'm like, Oh yeah, wait a minute, that's cheating.
- 31:18That's not fair. Wait a minute.
- 31:20I was when I judged, I didn't judge you based on you signing
- 31:23like 100 million extra player in January, in January.
- 31:27Where's that come from? 14 players in a year.
- 31:30Yeah, however, but I still believe that City aren't good
- 31:35enough and a 2 Highland dependent.
- 31:37So I don't think they, I don't think Arsenal are good enough,
- 31:40but I don't see the alternative. Yeah, Aston Villa in my opinion
- 31:46of being getting lucky and keep getting lucky.
- 31:49I don't know how there's one there is.
- 31:51One Michael Carrick. Tell you what, I would love it
- 31:56if we beat them. Love it.
- 31:58All right, Kevin. They've still got to go to
- 32:00Anfield. And Man City.
- 32:04And Man City. And city get a result and what
- 32:07what he said, what our teta said about our our fans, You know
- 32:13when he said. Kept really quiet.
- 32:15Kept quiet all this time about our Tetra and his tight
- 32:18trousers. Bruno.
- 32:20You know Bruno and his loyalty. And that song they played before
- 32:24the game? What is that cheesy crap at the
- 32:26end? Of.
- 32:27Forever to listen to, but I'll tell you something.
- 32:33I'd love it if we beat that. Can you?
- 32:35Imagine though, Can you imagine? And I agree with you as I think
- 32:38they'll get over the line. They've got enough and and the
- 32:41competition isn't good but. One thing I've I've been
- 32:46thinking about is they did a good summer in terms of bulking
- 32:49up the squad and I thought that was a weakness.
- 32:52But I do feel as much as you rate Gokharis, I do feel if they
- 32:57had managed to get one gun player, one player like who?
- 33:04And that is the that is the big right.
- 33:07That is the question because City do have it in Holland.
- 33:11I think they're too high independent.
- 33:13I think Liverpool last season had it in Salah.
- 33:16Yeah. That one player that could just
- 33:19turn a draw into a win. But.
- 33:22There wasn't sacker that player like, you know, last season, for
- 33:25example. I don't think sackers.
- 33:28Well, had the ability to step up, you know like from from 2.
- 33:32Years ago he was showing signs of being a gun player but like I
- 33:36was talking earlier about the hamstring and I think he's just
- 33:39taking time to recover. I also think the team, the way
- 33:43they play is not set up like 2-3 years ago.
- 33:45Do you remember when they were playing like really exhilarating
- 33:48football? Odega was scoring goals.
- 33:52That hasn't happened for like 2 years and they've just become a
- 33:56bit sideways and conservative. Because the bottom, the big
- 33:59criticism against Arsenal of the last few years is they don't
- 34:01have a proper #9 and they went and signed the proper #9 He
- 34:05hasn't delivered obviously, like as much as they'd like, but.
- 34:08There is one gun player. I've never had an issue with
- 34:11them not having the number. I've never thought that this
- 34:13year. I I just feel they needed a gun.
- 34:14I would have. I'll give you a random name as
- 34:17an example. Right that I said that they
- 34:19should have signed this guy. Ollie Watkins.
- 34:22Well, Ollie Watkins maybe, but I said this last January, I said
- 34:25they should have got Rashford on the left, right, just someone
- 34:29who's going to take a guy on, beat a man bang.
- 34:32And I just like direct. Who's that?
- 34:34Who's that player that's just going to like go?
- 34:36Chris is just for me. I say, I say not that type of
- 34:39player well. This is the silky.
- 34:41He's brilliant. But he's been on the bench for
- 34:44weeks because ODA Guards come back and, and that this is the
- 34:47issue. ODA guards captain.
- 34:49So it's a it's a big deal to like drop.
- 34:51Like I would play as a anyway, I know trustards had a good
- 34:55season, but I think Michel Arteta is a bit too
- 34:58conservative. And if they just he is, if they
- 35:01had one gun player, that could just be like, yeah, I get all
- 35:04the conservative stuff, but I'm just going to beat two players.
- 35:08That's why I said to you guys when we signed Cunya, I just
- 35:12want to watch him play. He does crazy shit and it's fun
- 35:16and then the celebration and that's what I love, right?
- 35:19To me, that's what when we talked about what Man United DNA
- 35:22and I'm like, there's nothing tactical.
- 35:23Gary Neville. Oh yeah, you know, this is, I'm
- 35:26used to seeing the 442 and you know, this and the compact and
- 35:30I'm like, mate, that's just because you played under Fergie.
- 35:32Have a block. Nice.
- 35:33I don't know. It's massive though.
- 35:35My nose is huge, but you know what I mean?
- 35:38It's like, OK, you've got this Fergie thing in your head, and
- 35:41that's for you, right. The Busby team didn't play
- 35:44anything like that. What what is Man United DNA to
- 35:46me is, is is driving charisma. Yeah.
- 35:49And, and flair. And that's why that that's why I
- 35:52was like Cunha, he's a Man United player.
- 35:54And that's a Man United player. Take the ball, beat a man, whack
- 35:59it in the net. Bruno Fernandez, absolutely
- 36:01love. I'll keep defending the guy.
- 36:03I just love watching. I want to see flair.
- 36:05Why Defender Paul Pogba. Brilliant.
- 36:07Yeah. Final thing, just to wrap up,
- 36:10like, you know, we talked about DNA a couple of weeks ago and as
- 36:13you know, you describe what the DNA is, but a lot of people, I
- 36:16think it was probably Gary Neville that said it.
- 36:18Like United fans know when they see what a proper United team
- 36:23should be. And Ash, I think a lot of people
- 36:24have said these last two games they've seen it like that is
- 36:28what Unite should be like. Agreed.
- 36:31Yeah, yeah, totally. Like we talked about it last
- 36:34week, as good as the football was, it was exhilarating, fast
- 36:37attacking front foot. They all work their asses off
- 36:42and that's United to to a core, right?
- 36:44That's this, that's, you know, to use a gym line, that's the
- 36:46City of Manchester, right? They're hard working people and
- 36:49that's reflected, right. I think as told the story about
- 36:52Busby a couple weeks ago, when you know, the workers, when they
- 36:57come to the games on a Saturday, they want to be entertained.
- 37:02You know, one interesting line that I did read, because
- 37:05obviously some Busby's passing anniversary was last week, was
- 37:11that, you know, never settle for anything than than first.
- 37:15So it is in the DNA of the club because Busby, you know, created
- 37:21that club with what he did. So that's as far as I'm
- 37:25concerned, like as simple as it gets.
- 37:27And yeah, Michael Carrick is is doing that right now.
- 37:31And long may it continue. As she getting the contracts out
- 37:34for Michael Carrick. I've always, I've always said
- 37:37Carrick, you know, I've always said Carrick.
- 37:39My only issue with Carrick is I always feel that I would prefer
- 37:44someone on top of Carrick to kind of be the, the figurehead,
- 37:48the Carlo, the, you know, the calm statesman, the Southgate.
- 37:52And I would prefer him. Now the question is, I just sit
- 37:56down with with him and in a room and be like, right what?
- 37:59What do you want to do? Yeah, if he wants to be the
- 38:03number one and you do it the other way round, you put the
- 38:05experienced coaching staff in the background with the.
- 38:08Which he's done right. Yeah.
- 38:10Yeah. He's he's done that with, with
- 38:12Steve Holland and you know, maybe he can bring in the way
- 38:16that Ollie did with a Mickey Phelan, someone experienced as
- 38:20well. I think he's got that in Steve
- 38:22Holland. Steve Holland's worked with some
- 38:25of the best coaches in the world at Chelsea.
- 38:28But let's just say bulk it out, right?
- 38:29He's probably just put this team together.
- 38:32You can, but I think Johnny, Johnny, Jonathan Woodgate is
- 38:35like big for him. He was there the whole time at
- 38:37Middlesbrough. Look, I'm not going to be claim
- 38:39I'm a Middlesbrough expert like most other United fans are now,
- 38:41but like, he is big. And also one of the nice things
- 38:45about Woodgate for me in terms of like thinking about improving
- 38:48the defence and I talked about it in previous parts about like
- 38:51body shape and stuff like that. Woodgate is going to be able to
- 38:54give that individual coaching along with whatever else he's
- 38:57bringing to the table. But yeah, fair enough.
- 39:00Like if if if you want someone else to just bolster it, why
- 39:05not? I do think Carrick, I do think
- 39:06Carrick wants the number one rollers like given he was
- 39:09assistant, he does, he was assistant under Ollie for two or
- 39:12three years. He's going to want the number
- 39:13one position. So I think you can assume that
- 39:16safely. Yeah, I thought you know me,
- 39:19I've always been pro that that type of choice.
- 39:21I've never for me, you offer me Michael Carrick or these list of
- 39:26mid table managers, right? I'll take Carrick all day over
- 39:30Silver, Glasner, Iriola, the list goes on of Thomas Frank of
- 39:36all this mid table Emory, right? Because to me, all of these
- 39:40people naugles men. To be like, Naglesman's another
- 39:46good young coach, but Carrick's a good young coach now.
- 39:49That's what I'm saying. Because you're a fan of
- 39:51Naglesman. I'm not.
- 39:52So for me, I mean, I've always, yeah, I've always liked Carrick.
- 39:56Anyway. Do you remember?
- 39:58I think we all agreed with the other spell that he had the
- 40:01little spells. Like, it's a shame that he can't
- 40:04carry on because I think Ralph Rainier came, right?
- 40:07But fair play to me. He went, he made the decision to
- 40:09get out of the club it was. The right decision because
- 40:12you've got 2 1/2 years or whatever, three seasons at
- 40:15Middlesbrough and the the question for me is like there's
- 40:19a few like viewpoints, right for me.
- 40:23I don't know what you guys think.
- 40:25So when you think about the manager that you want to pick
- 40:29right, you can think about like the top ones that you've already
- 40:33mentioned, the Carlos, the T calls Lewis Enrique, I think
- 40:36I've mentioned him as well. But then you got to match it, I
- 40:39think with the squad. Now me personally, I think as
- 40:44disagreed with this a couple weeks ago, but like with the
- 40:47current squad the way it was, I didn't think this is a squad for
- 40:51Carlo Ancelotti. But now that I've seen this,
- 40:57right, and let's see how it finishes in terms of like, look,
- 41:01whatever it happens, right, let's say we get champs or like
- 41:04we get enough wins as as a team of Carlo and Michael Carrick and
- 41:10then Carlo to, you know, pass the baton on to Michael Carrick
- 41:14in two to three years in two years.
- 41:16That that for me is the five year plan.
- 41:19I don't I don't think that works.
- 41:21Why I don't want. I mean, I think it does work,
- 41:25but it's only if Carrick would want, yeah.
- 41:27Exactly. Yeah, yeah.
- 41:29I think, I think he's more tenacious and steely than he
- 41:32gets credit for, you know, behind the.
- 41:33Scenes, but there's only so many jobs he wants as well.
- 41:38Like I think who was saying it recently?
- 41:41Someone from United. Oh, Wazza.
- 41:43Wazza was talking about it. There's only certain jobs he
- 41:46wants. He doesn't want to be like, you
- 41:49know, take the next job at like Luton.
- 41:51I don't know, maybe he'd be up for the Spurs job as an example.
- 41:54But there's only certain jobs. He's a reluctant manager.
- 41:57They call him. That's another term that I've
- 41:59been. Michael Carrick, this is.
- 42:00Yeah, yeah. That's that's a term that's been
- 42:03floated around in the last couple of weeks.
- 42:05This is why, you know he might be up for a #2 gig.
- 42:10For now, yeah, Learn the ropes, offer absolute world class.
- 42:14That's it. Winning manager.
- 42:16And then, like I said, Carlo is 66.
- 42:18I think he's going to go 67 soon.
- 42:21Yeah, I've been reading the books.
- 42:23That was the plan under Van Hall, right?
- 42:26Van Hall gigs you, you get Van Hall in and then you get gigs
- 42:29in. I, I don't, I just still
- 42:32disagree on this Carlo thing in terms of I I think people look
- 42:35at him go, oh, he's this Galactico Whisperer.
- 42:37Yes, he's through his career just being a flexible manager,
- 42:42someone who works well with the the president, right?
- 42:45And that's what we need. We need some calm, handles
- 42:48himself really well. And I don't think there's any
- 42:51like for me, it's tactically very flexible.
- 42:54He doesn't have any set like like with Pep Guardiola.
- 42:56He's got this very defined way of playing and you're like, oh,
- 43:00if you put Pep Guardiola with this squad it'd be a big mess.
- 43:05Kind of my worry. Carlo Carlo's favourite system
- 43:07is just a 442 like, you know, basic, like what we what we've
- 43:12seen and then respond to the opposition have some good
- 43:17tactical ideas for specific OK, sack is playing on the on the
- 43:22right. Let's double up with the with
- 43:24Dogu and, and sure, right, that kind of thinking rather than,
- 43:28oh, we've got to have the players in these very specific
- 43:31positions that Pep Pep does. So I think Carlo with the with
- 43:35the backroom staff that we have would be great if Carrick wants
- 43:40it, 100% go with Carrick over all of this list of very average
- 43:44mid table managers because they have shown to be good at at mid
- 43:49table jobs in reactive football that have never proved
- 43:52themselves to play expressive football.
- 43:55Everything I've heard of Carrick at Middlesbrough was that he
- 43:57also tried to play from football and that's what we need.
- 44:00So which top managers would would make you think I'm going
- 44:04to have to think about this? No one, because.
- 44:07Carlo. Yeah, because the you went
- 44:10through, remember when you went through your list and I'm like,
- 44:12yeah, OK, I like that list, Steve.
- 44:13However, Thomas Toochell is going to clash.
- 44:17The whole, the whole thing we need is the recruitment side of
- 44:22things, alignment and, and, and when this new recruitment team
- 44:27come and go, right? This is the guy we're getting.
- 44:29The manager doesn't turn around and go, no, I don't want him, I
- 44:31want this other guy. And then speaks in the press
- 44:33about how, oh, they didn't sign me this guy, or they didn't and
- 44:36moan and moan. No, I do agree Tuka would blow
- 44:39up at United in this structure for.
- 44:40Sure, So does it matter what he does then in the next?
- 44:44Was it 415 games left? I think it does.
- 44:47Surely he's only getting the job if he delivers top five
- 44:51Champions League. I'd say he's only in the in the
- 44:53run in for the job I'd say. And even then he might not get
- 44:56it. But to have a chance, I think
- 44:58he's got to deliver Champions League football, which looks
- 45:00doable. I don't really watch a lot of
- 45:02analysis on TV because I think it's rubbish.
- 45:05But what I was watching, Roy Keane is saying even if he wins
- 45:07the next 15 games, he doesn't get the job.
- 45:10It's like what it's. Rough because he doesn't like
- 45:13his wife though. Yeah, what has Keane got against
- 45:17Cat? Is it because he took his 16
- 45:18chill or something? I was going to, I was going to
- 45:21bring this point up about what Keane said.
- 45:22So I think there is history with Keane and Carrick.
- 45:25I think it was. Do you remember when we lost two
- 45:27nil to Olympiacos under David Moyes in the Champions League
- 45:31and we ended up winning the second leg 32 at Old Trafford,
- 45:34but in the first leg we. Lost hat trick, yeah.
- 45:37Yeah, we lost two nil away and Keane was working for ITV.
- 45:41Carrick did the post match interview like, you know,
- 45:44representing the players and basically, you know, did a
- 45:46little 2 minute very, you know, like understated interview.
- 45:50And then when it came back to ITV, Keane basically made a
- 45:54comment and said something like, oh, Carrick's interview was like
- 45:57the team's performance. And then Carrick's wife, I think
- 46:00on Twitter, called him either the C word or another word and
- 46:06deleted it basically. So I think that's why Keene made
- 46:08the comment a few weeks ago on the overlap about.
- 46:11Clearly didn't forget it. Yeah, he's held the game like.
- 46:142014 or something? 2014, yeah. 20 Yeah, Over 12
- 46:19years ago, probably. So he's held on to that.
- 46:22Oh yeah. Is that what he said yesterday?
- 46:24Like no chance. Yeah, he said.
- 46:27Even if Carrick wins every. Game all of the get every game
- 46:30till the end of the season. They shouldn't give him the job.
- 46:33I'm like, are you kidding me? If he wins.
- 46:35If he wins every game till the end of the season.
- 46:40Could win the Titans. I think he could.
- 46:41I think that's the league. So you were telling me if
- 46:44Michael Carrick wins the Premier League, have?
- 46:46You checked it. But aren't we like about 12
- 46:49behind Arsenal? That means that. 83 is the Max
- 46:52we can get. Yeah, but we're 12 behind
- 46:54Arsenal, right? That's it's it's it's it's run
- 46:57them close, right? Yeah, yeah, it would run them
- 47:00close you'd. Probably get a second.
- 47:01Absolutely. Mental you wouldn't give him the
- 47:04job. Yeah, but this is where, this is
- 47:07where Neville Keene, they think they control the narrative of
- 47:11United fans because Neville made a comment as well post match and
- 47:15again talking about whether Carrick gets it.
- 47:17And he said prior to the Man City game, he did say every
- 47:21United fan. He said every football fan was
- 47:23thinking Carrick just gets this to the end of the season and
- 47:26then moves on. But that's not true because
- 47:29there would have been United fans and there would have been
- 47:31other United fans out there that would have, you know, considered
- 47:33giving it Carrot long, long term if it went well or vice versa.
- 47:37Never thought Carrot should get the job.
- 47:38So this is where, like Nevelyn Keene, you know, I feel like
- 47:42they think they control the narrative sometimes.
- 47:45Yeah, I mean, look, it's one of these old age things, especially
- 47:49over the last, like was it 1213 years?
- 47:52Especially Gary, because like Neville has a tendency to be
- 47:56like, I'm not going to get all emotional.
- 47:58And it goes on a 10 minute rant about the whole club.
- 48:02You know, he famously, we talked about how he never spoke up
- 48:05against the Glazers as a player and even as his first couple
- 48:09years as a pundit. And then he, you know, like the
- 48:11rest of us, but way before including the 1958 lot out to
- 48:16them to be like, no, we want the Glazers out when we were saying
- 48:19it, right? Not when Neville piped up about,
- 48:21you know, kicking the Glazers out a few years ago.
- 48:24Yeah, and the other thing Keane really went hard at was Johnny
- 48:28Evans, as I don't know if you saw that, where he was really
- 48:31questioning why. Yeah, I wasn't that on the
- 48:33overlap. Is this the ear right?
- 48:35Thing. Yeah, I think.
- 48:36He was just like, how did he get the job?
- 48:38But he was the loans coach, and now it's that.
- 48:40Was very He had an argument with the boys.
- 48:42And all of this stuff. And I'm, I tell you, he's.
- 48:46Got he's got a grudgingly. Our our pundits a real problem
- 48:51because I heard about skulls and butt as well.
- 48:53I need to watch this that they were listening to Martin as in
- 48:55Martin as Scott. You know, when I talk, I don't
- 48:58listen to much analysis. Like honestly, Paul skulls talks
- 49:01like he never watches football. He just it's just he's just a
- 49:05just a bizarre. I don't know how he gets, how
- 49:07does he get so many gigs on pundits?
- 49:09I think it's the name he. Likes foot pod?
- 49:12It's the name of United they've been.
- 49:13Scott is on What's it that TNTA lot?
- 49:16Right. He's not anymore, but he was.
- 49:18He was. He was, though, Yeah.
- 49:20It's the pod, but the the problem is like me personally, I
- 49:26don't take as much offence as a lot of the rest of the fan base,
- 49:30maybe because I just kind of ignore them anyway.
- 49:33But in terms of the squad, there is a problem because the squad
- 49:38have have talked about it to say it is a hindrance and therefore
- 49:44there's a fine line between saying someone is not performing
- 49:48or like defending well or, you know, should have taken that
- 49:51chance. And then what Nikki but said
- 49:53about Martinez getting chucked around like a ragdoll by Harland
- 49:59without checking his record, because Martinez even had a good
- 50:03record against Harland when he was at IAX.
- 50:05And then he has the game of his life against him last Saturday
- 50:09and then he calls it on, which fair play to Martinez for doing.
- 50:13And then, you know, butt and skulls double down.
- 50:16In fairness to skulls, it did seem like actually, yeah, we did
- 50:20fuck up. Where?
- 50:21He said, he said. We could have worded it better,
- 50:23didn't they? Which is.
- 50:24Yeah, but that's that's acknowledgement.
- 50:26Whereas Nikki Butt was like, we're having a laugh.
- 50:29No, you wasn't. You were being truthful.
- 50:31That's what you thought? Yeah, and also the key with this
- 50:35is, and they both made the point, I think they made the
- 50:37point that, you know, back in the day we would get criticism
- 50:40and, you know, we had to deal with it.
- 50:41Different landscape. Big difference was, yeah #1
- 50:43Fergie, in terms of the protection to, you know, the
- 50:47world class squad that they were both part of.
- 50:49I mean, you guys correct me if I'm wrong.
- 50:50I don't think Nikki Butt was anything that special, you know,
- 50:53as a player. But most importantly, now you
- 50:57don't just have Match of the Day once a week and daily papers.
- 51:01You have us, you have podcasts, you have social media.
- 51:04So the noise is constant and what they say gets picked up.
- 51:07The way you send it, you have us as if there's a special.
- 51:10Entity in our podcast. We're fighting back.
- 51:15We're a political. News Channel.
- 51:18Trying to fight Diego. Dallas like got a picture of us
- 51:21in his wall with a dart board. But Steve?
- 51:26Steve's head is bullseye. Constant noise there, right?
- 51:29That's that is the difference. These things, these things like,
- 51:33you know, didn't have these 20 years ago and plays check Chris.
- 51:36Williamson on. Us no.
- 51:37It's true though, right? That that of.
- 51:39Course it is. That's the big difference that
- 51:41they don't, that they don't appreciate.
- 51:43So yeah, I mean, they, they say what they want, don't they?
- 51:47And they get the gigs, they get paid, so they're happy.
- 51:50But yeah, I think. It's a societal problem as well.
- 51:53It's it's I, I don't mind people saying what they want.
- 51:56I don't understand is why would people listen to this?
- 51:59It's like, yeah, like I said, why is scolds?
- 52:02How did Scolds keep getting these gigs when he just had
- 52:04nothing interesting to say? Yeah, it's the power of the
- 52:07United fan base though. They get 100 + 1000 views a week
- 52:10because United fans will tune into it because he's.
- 52:13Miserable as well, most of the time.
- 52:15At least I know Neville, you know, gets it wrong a lot of the
- 52:18time. But he's passionate at least and
- 52:22articulate. Yeah.
- 52:23And Keane as well. Like it's is there some level of
- 52:26entertainment? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:27You disagree with him, but there's some entertainment
- 52:30there. Skulls are just a bit douring.
- 52:34As I'm interested to hear from you here because obviously you
- 52:36missed the pod last week. So the protest, you know, I
- 52:40think majority is against the Glazers.
- 52:43We still want the Glazers out the club.
- 52:45However Steve from the 1958 did say they now put Ratcliffe in
- 52:49the same category. Haven't seen what's happened
- 52:51over the last two years. I know you see more positives
- 52:54from NEOS and others, but generally speaking, do you
- 52:57support the fact that United fans should protest against this
- 53:01joint ownership of the Glazers and NEOS?
- 53:05Yeah, because the Glazers is still majority shareholders,
- 53:09right? There should be nowhere near
- 53:10this club. You know, for me, you, there's
- 53:14no perfect ownership model, right?
- 53:18Even our fan base is a bit crazy.
- 53:19So we put us in charge of what would happen.
- 53:22We'd have you signing correct, 100 million.
- 53:25Exactly. Harry Kane, Brian and Burma on
- 53:28the right. You know, we'd have Ash getting
- 53:32freaking Iriola as manager. It's all things would happen.
- 53:36Yeah, all things, all things would happen.
- 53:38So but one thing I'm certain of is a football club should not be
- 53:42treated like a, you know, a corporate entity where money is
- 53:48extracted from it and from its fans, right.
- 53:50If as much as you know, we rile against or we see the you know,
- 53:55the way Barcelona has been a mess and Real Madrid has had its
- 53:59own dramas at times, but by Munich, it has has some kind of
- 54:05often drama in the in the boardroom or whatever.
- 54:08But that the majority fan right, either club owned, membership
- 54:12owned and that's that's the model we should have.
- 54:17The difference between the I see Jim Ratcliffe and and the glazes
- 54:21is I don't think Jim Ratcliffe wants to Man United to make
- 54:24money for he's he's made his money and he wants his legacy.
- 54:28He's investing in like he threw 200 million at Ben Ainsley on a
- 54:31boat race. Why?
- 54:33Because he just thinks it's fun, right?
- 54:35It's not that he wants to make money from it, but then.
- 54:37He falls out with all these. People, no, you won't fall out
- 54:40with them. What I'm saying is like, it's
- 54:41his hobby. He threw, he threw money on this
- 54:43Ineos Grenadiers thing because he's like, Oh yeah, like the old
- 54:46Land Rover. We should, you know, Pride of
- 54:48Britain, we should bring that back.
- 54:50It's just a hobby for him right? While the Glazers who bought the
- 54:53club to basically make profit from it, take as much money from
- 54:56the supporters as possible. Should never have been allowed.
- 54:59Well, that's the key, isn't it? The debt is still there.
- 55:00Yeah, the debt is still there. Yeah, it's, it's it's wrong.
- 55:03What happened then? It's wrong that I don't see.
- 55:06Football clubs should be allowed to have dividends taken out of
- 55:08them. It should not be entities for
- 55:10profit. It's it's wrong.
- 55:13When's that freeze stopping? You know, because Jim, like with
- 55:16this investment deal, had the dividends frozen.
- 55:19Isn't that coming up soon? Yeah, I think there was a
- 55:22timeline on that. It was 2 years, right?
- 55:26Or in and around that mark. You're talking free.
- 55:29Is that the drag along rights which you mean?
- 55:30That's separate. Isn't it there was a thing where
- 55:32part of the deal was no dividends, no dividends come out
- 55:34of the club and it yeah, it picked up a massive financial
- 55:38mess. So 100% keep protesting against
- 55:41the current ownership. The Glazers are still in.
- 55:44They need to be moved out. Whether that's Ratcliffe has the
- 55:47ability to do that, maybe he doesn't with his financial
- 55:49position. So we may need other backers.
- 55:52The club needs the Glazers out. 100% keep the protest going.
- 55:58I fully go to the protest on Sunday.
- 56:01Yeah, I fully, fully support the the current ownership of
- 56:05Manchester United is not acceptable.
- 56:07We want a debt free club of ideally really the Glaziers
- 56:12should have to give all that money back.
- 56:16Honestly, that's if I was in charge, you know, this would
- 56:22never have been allowed. I'd stick them in prison and,
- 56:25you know, give get get them to give all the money back because
- 56:28especially. Darcy.
- 56:30Yeah, 100%. It's absolutely it's shocking.
- 56:33But this is the the this is the issue.
- 56:37You know, you talk about, you know, Andy Burnham trying to get
- 56:40in and, and and failing. We had a we've had a choice in
- 56:44this country for the last, I don't know, 30 years between,
- 56:48you know, far right and this right.
- 56:50And, you know, we've never had people care about our society.
- 56:54It's always been a a quite highly capitalist neoliberal
- 56:58economics belief in extractative, you know, rent
- 57:04from water, from energy, from all, all sort of all the basics.
- 57:10And football is another one that should not be an extractative
- 57:13thing. We shouldn't.
- 57:15These are things, all of these things are things that we as a
- 57:18society have built over years together collectively and that
- 57:24someone shouldn't come along and take profit from it.
- 57:26Manchester United was built by the by the supporters and we
- 57:32shouldn't be exploited and we have been continued to be
- 57:35exploited. When they put their ticket
- 57:39prices up it's because I, in my opinion, is to try and make the
- 57:43club get in a financial footing, but it's because of the
- 57:47historical exploitation of the glazes.
- 57:49Yeah, OK, so we're all agreed on, Yeah, you know, protesting
- 57:52is right, especially against the Glazer ownership.
- 57:55So Ash, final word with you. Message to the United fans ahead
- 57:59of Fulham on Sunday. Message to the fans, what can I
- 58:02say? Manchester City, Arsenal.
- 58:06Great days, but the club is going to be here for years and
- 58:10if you want to protect the club, go to the protests on Sunday,
- 58:14make your voice heard, do what you can, show up with your flags
- 58:19and just make a hell of a lot of noise and let's get these owners
- 58:23out as soon as possible. And then let's hope Michael
- 58:26Carrick delivers a scintillating performance on the pitch because
- 58:30we can want both things at the same time, right?
- 58:33We can want the team to succeed and want these owners out so.
- 58:37I don't want to hear about Ash talking about Marco Silver
- 58:40master class in the next part. Because I can't deal with it.
- 58:43Oh, that's a good point. Why am I?
- 58:45It's why. Am I going to talk about that?
- 58:47I'm I'm the Michael Carrick train mate.
- 58:49It's win win for Ash on next week's part.
- 58:52Exactly. Can't wait.
- 58:54So we'll wrap it up there this week.
- 58:55Thanks for joining us, and we'll catch you on the next one.
