- 3:06Speaker 6: How do you do.
- 3:06Speaker 8: I'm certainly glad you're here. I've been waiting around the
- 3:08Speaker 8: seat be four hours. I don't know what to do.
- 3:10Speaker 4: The baby must be getting pretty heavy, ma'amkes's down over here.
- 3:13Speaker 6: Thought about it all right, thank you?
- 3:19Speaker 8: Yeah, that's all right, honey, you sleep me clease you
- 3:22Speaker 8: by the things.
- 3:24Speaker 5: That's a shame, yes, ma'am. Well, report we got didn't
- 3:27Speaker 5: go into detail.
- 3:27Speaker 6: Some woman left the baby with you, is that right?
- 3:29Speaker 4: Yes?
- 3:30Speaker 7: As soon as we got off the bus this.
- 3:31Speaker 9: Morning, she said she'd only be gone a few minutes.
- 3:33Speaker 8: It's been hours.
- 3:34Speaker 7: I don't know what to do.
- 3:35Speaker 6: Well, did you know the woman missus?
- 3:36Speaker 8: Well, her name's Dorothew Miller. She's from Arizona, Tucsons.
- 3:40Speaker 9: We got off the bus and she asked me if
- 3:41Speaker 9: i'd hold her baby while she went to get a luggage.
- 3:44Speaker 9: She said she'd meet me right there by the information there.
- 3:47Speaker 9: He's been waiting ever since. She hadn't come back. I
- 3:49Speaker 9: don't know what to think of it.
- 3:51Speaker 4: How well do you know this darting on her man?
- 3:53Speaker 8: Well, not too well. But she seemed like such a
- 3:55Speaker 8: nice girl, friendly and very socially.
- 3:58Speaker 4: We sat together all the way in, got on the
- 4:00Speaker 4: bus with her two sons.
- 4:01Speaker 9: At its Oh no, I'm from Cincinnati. I got on
- 4:03Speaker 9: the bus there and then went down to Dallas. Had
- 4:05Speaker 9: a visit with an ad of mine down there. I
- 4:08Speaker 9: got another bus at Dallas to come up here, went
- 4:10Speaker 9: along and started very nice. Same bus I came in
- 4:14Speaker 9: on this morning. I'm not getting my husband, army man,
- 4:17Speaker 9: he's coming in on a transport from overseas, coming in tomorrow.
- 4:20Speaker 5: So you say this, Dorothy Eveiller, I bought it the
- 4:22Speaker 5: bus of Tucson with a baby. She rode all the
- 4:24Speaker 5: way into Lost Age the hill.
- 4:25Speaker 9: Yes, right into this seapo. She sat on the seat
- 4:28Speaker 9: next to mine. He struck up a conversation. Got to
- 4:31Speaker 9: be quite good friends, he said a sepa. I stand imagine.
- 4:36Speaker 4: How did the Miller woman seen him as though? It's
- 4:38Speaker 4: all right? I mean, was there anything odd about her behavior?
- 4:40Speaker 4: Anything unusual?
- 4:41Speaker 9: No, nothing at all. Seemed to me to be a
- 4:43Speaker 9: perfect mother. Took good care of the baby woman. For
- 4:46Speaker 9: here's what's the upsetting for her to go off like this,
- 4:50Speaker 9: leave her baby where the stranger does.
- 4:51Speaker 10: Makes me sense?
- 4:53Speaker 6: Well, now you say you talk to this Dorothy Miller
- 4:55Speaker 6: quite a bit along the way, man, I.
- 4:56Speaker 10: Thank you for what was that?
- 4:57Speaker 4: Maybe if we move out the card, Joe think me
- 4:59Speaker 4: a lot easier.
- 4:59Speaker 5: To That's a good idea, Miss Lords. Would you mind
- 5:02Speaker 5: coming along with us to our car parks. Just down
- 5:04Speaker 5: the street should be a little quet roun.
- 5:05Speaker 9: Yes, I have these two believes.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Okay, be out this way there she'd be. I'm sorry,
- 5:15Speaker 6: hardly part of help you ever won know that?
- 5:19Speaker 4: No, that's okay.
- 5:20Speaker 6: Just down the street here, ma'am.
- 5:21Speaker 8: Oh, miss gilful Day, it was shame or its troubled?
- 5:27Speaker 6: H Can you make it all right? Miss lord?
- 5:31Speaker 10: Oh?
- 5:31Speaker 8: Yes I can too.
- 5:33Speaker 6: I'm gonna slip the lashes and back of the funny
- 5:34Speaker 6: room there, yeah, okay, in your hands.
- 5:39Speaker 5: Okay, not about this miller woman, Miss Louis.
- 5:44Speaker 6: I was gonna ask you.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Yes, well, that she happened to tell you where she
- 5:47Speaker 5: lived in tu Soon, if she had any people or
- 5:49Speaker 5: any family.
- 5:50Speaker 9: No, I don't recall anything like that. She talks about
- 5:53Speaker 9: some of the girlfriends she had, their their babies.
- 5:56Speaker 10: She didn't mention any of.
- 5:57Speaker 8: Them by name.
- 5:58Speaker 5: Those I about her description as low as anything unusual there, No, I.
- 6:02Speaker 9: Wouldn't say so small girl, I put three or four,
- 6:05Speaker 9: I'd say one hundred and ten or fifteen pounds, dark hair,
- 6:08Speaker 9: shoulder length, dark eyes, knife and classie, very pretty eyes.
- 6:12Speaker 6: Wow, how old would you say?
- 6:13Speaker 7: Twenty?
- 6:13Speaker 9: It's what she told me anyway, She said she had
- 6:15Speaker 9: a brisbee in May. I remember we talked about that
- 6:18Speaker 9: she was born under the same fine eyewa.
- 6:19Speaker 4: Char as the bull, and all the talk she had
- 6:22Speaker 4: was this and on our girls. She never gave you
- 6:23Speaker 4: any reason to think that anything was wrong with it,
- 6:25Speaker 4: didn't seem to be despondent, depressed about anything.
- 6:28Speaker 8: Perfectly normal girl, as far as I could tell, I
- 6:31Speaker 8: just can't get over it. I can't imagine her doing
- 6:33Speaker 8: anything like this.
- 6:34Speaker 6: Well, how'd you seem this morning when you got in
- 6:36Speaker 6: on the bus. Pretty much the same?
- 6:37Speaker 8: Yes, I think. So we got off the bus together.
- 6:41Speaker 9: She had her hands full with the baby, so I
- 6:42Speaker 9: helped her off with the hand belief she was carrying.
- 6:45Speaker 9: When we got inside the waiting room, she mentioned that
- 6:48Speaker 9: she had to go pick up some luggage from the
- 6:49Speaker 9: tech stands. She asked me if I'd mind very much
- 6:52Speaker 9: holding her baby while she went after it.
- 6:53Speaker 8: I said, no, not at all. She went around the
- 6:56Speaker 8: corner of the baggage stand and that's the last I saw.
- 6:58Speaker 6: You checked around the depot and you had her page.
- 7:01Speaker 9: I talked to everyone in the place. The porter's ticket
- 7:03Speaker 9: close information to travelers aid not one of.
- 7:06Speaker 8: Them could help. I tried everybody there, more friends than
- 7:12Speaker 8: ether than is he trying to think you were wonderful.
- 7:19Speaker 8: It's adorable. It's a little boy, she said. He named Steven.
- 7:23Speaker 4: Yes, ma'am. Oh, you say you've been way around the
- 7:25Speaker 4: depot three hours? Has the baby been said?
- 7:27Speaker 9: Yes, this handsley similar girl gave me the whole. I
- 7:30Speaker 9: found a bottleful of formula in it, and that's coffee
- 7:33Speaker 9: shop warmed it for me. A little teller here finished
- 7:36Speaker 9: it off.
- 7:37Speaker 8: Well, I guess we'll be wanting some more pretty soon.
- 7:40Speaker 4: I guess we're there back in Huh Yeah, I guess.
- 7:42Speaker 8: I can't imagine it. I just can't imagine this little boy.
- 7:46Speaker 8: Just look at him.
- 7:47Speaker 10: Yes, her own baby, so small, helpless?
- 7:51Speaker 7: How could she go off and leave him?
- 7:54Speaker 6: Well, I guess she had a reason. Must have been important.
- 7:56Speaker 10: A sudden week old baby, what's more important than that.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Before we left the bus depot, ed contacted the clerk
- 8:07Speaker 5: at the depot information desk and left our card with him.
- 8:10Speaker 5: If anyone came in to make inquiries about the abandoned child,
- 8:13Speaker 5: he was to advise him to get in touch with us.
- 8:15Speaker 5: Eleven forty eight am, the woman who had been left.
- 8:18Speaker 6: With the baby. Missus Marjorie Lewis, agreed to return to
- 8:22Speaker 6: the office with us and give us a complete report
- 8:24Speaker 6: on everything she knew about the case.
- 8:26Speaker 5: As soon as we got back, we briefed Captain Stein
- 8:28Speaker 5: on what happened, and he assigned Policewoman Betty Stone to
- 8:31Speaker 5: come in.
- 8:31Speaker 6: And help out with the baby.
- 8:33Speaker 5: A cursory examination seemed to indicate there was nothing abnormal
- 8:36Speaker 5: about the baby nor apparent deformities. We checked the blanket
- 8:39Speaker 5: in a baby's clothing, but we found no identifying marks
- 8:42Speaker 5: of any.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Use to it.
- 8:43Speaker 5: Policewoman Stone made the baby comfortable for the time being,
- 8:46Speaker 5: and then she began to check through the contents of
- 8:48Speaker 5: the small police which the baby's mother had left with
- 8:50Speaker 5: Missus Lewis.
- 8:51Speaker 6: It contained the usual assortment baby oil, powder, dextros, a
- 8:55Speaker 6: few cans of milk, a couple of blankets, and the
- 8:57Speaker 6: supply of diapers. Ed and I continued to interview Missus Lewis.
- 9:01Speaker 4: Is the miller woman's first baby, do you know or
- 9:03Speaker 4: did she happen to mention it?
- 9:04Speaker 8: Yes, it's her first, That's what she told me.
- 9:06Speaker 6: Anyway, did you talk about the baby's health at all?
- 9:08Speaker 6: Was there any trouble there, would you know?
- 9:10Speaker 9: Well, she did say she had some trouble with the formula.
- 9:12Speaker 9: At first, it didn't seem to suit. The baby wasn't
- 9:15Speaker 9: anything serious though, As a matter of fact, that does
- 9:18Speaker 9: worry me a little bit.
- 9:19Speaker 8: Such, what's that the baby's formula?
- 9:21Speaker 9: Missus Miller did say it had to be fixed a
- 9:23Speaker 9: special way, some special medicine she put in it too.
- 9:27Speaker 7: Are you sure the baby's going to get good care?
- 9:29Speaker 4: Yes, man's no need to worry. He'll be moved to
- 9:31Speaker 4: general hospital a la fassa.
- 9:32Speaker 9: But the special formula, the medicine she was giving him,
- 9:35Speaker 9: Will they know about that?
- 9:36Speaker 8: Will they know how to see him?
- 9:37Speaker 5: Well, they've handle cases like this performulas, Lewis, They're pretty competent.
- 9:40Speaker 6: People don't know what to do.
- 9:41Speaker 8: I truly hope so. I don't know why I'm so
- 9:43Speaker 8: considered her.
- 9:45Speaker 10: I guess it's just the little scholars, so small all alone.
- 9:48Speaker 10: It's a helpless, terrible change.
- 9:50Speaker 6: Yes, man, about this special formula the baby has to have.
- 9:53Speaker 6: What's the reason for that? Would you know the baby
- 9:55Speaker 6: been sick recently?
- 9:56Speaker 8: No, I don't think so.
- 9:58Speaker 9: Missus Miller did say he was a little sick when
- 10:00Speaker 9: he was born, spend a little time in an incubator.
- 10:03Speaker 9: I don't believe it was critical though, at least I
- 10:04Speaker 9: didn't gather.
- 10:05Speaker 11: It that well.
- 10:06Speaker 6: Thank you very much, miss Lewis. Appreciate your cooperation everything
- 10:08Speaker 6: you've done on it.
- 10:09Speaker 8: Not at all, tach, and I only wish I could
- 10:10Speaker 8: be more.
- 10:11Speaker 4: Hell, do you mind telling us where you'll be stopping
- 10:12Speaker 4: in town? Then hospital? We might have the contact you again?
- 10:15Speaker 8: Well right, don't have any reservations. I was thinking of
- 10:17Speaker 8: staying at a hotel close to downtown.
- 10:19Speaker 6: Was a big convention in town. Most of the place,
- 10:21Speaker 6: they're pretty crowd. We'd be glad to help you find
- 10:23Speaker 6: a hotel space if you're like, oh, well, that's.
- 10:25Speaker 8: Certainly very nice. Not at all, so I concidy. Could
- 10:28Speaker 8: I see you a minute?
- 10:29Speaker 6: Please? Yeah? Sorry, it was excuse me please?
- 10:30Speaker 12: Sure, yeah, I bet it or a policewoman. I'm not
- 10:36Speaker 12: bad at checking diapers. What do you mean over here?
- 10:41Speaker 12: Belief the mother elects of missus Lewis.
- 10:43Speaker 6: Did you come up with anything?
- 10:44Speaker 12: Didn't exort first, went over to Belief. Everything inside nothing
- 10:48Speaker 12: and I started putting the things back in the bag.
- 10:50Speaker 12: Found this nut stack of diapers there paid receipt for
- 10:55Speaker 12: a hospital bill eternity.
- 10:56Speaker 6: Ward Santa Maria Hospital too Son.
- 10:59Speaker 12: There's a patient name right there at the top, Dorothy Miller.
- 11:07Speaker 6: Twelve thirty PM a local broadcast and an APB was
- 11:10Speaker 6: gotten out on Dorothy Miller. And then we sent a communication.
- 11:13Speaker 5: To the Tucson Police Department laying out the story for
- 11:16Speaker 5: them and asking him to check with the Santa Maria.
- 11:18Speaker 6: A Hospital there for a possible lead.
- 11:20Speaker 5: On the missing mother. Meantime, the baby was removed to
- 11:23Speaker 5: General Hospital. We found accommodations for missus Lewis at a
- 11:26Speaker 5: downtown hotel.
- 11:27Speaker 6: We dropped her off there and then we drove back
- 11:29Speaker 6: to the bus depot on Sixth Street.
- 11:31Speaker 5: We tried to locate the driver of the bus on
- 11:33Speaker 5: which the Miller woman and her baby had arrived that morning.
- 11:36Speaker 5: We were told he was off duty and then he
- 11:37Speaker 5: wouldn't report back until eight.
- 11:39Speaker 6: O'clock the following morning. We left our card along.
- 11:42Speaker 5: With a message for the driver asking him to contact
- 11:44Speaker 5: as as soon as he returned. For the rest of
- 11:47Speaker 5: the afternoon, Ed and I, along with the two other
- 11:49Speaker 5: men from Juvenile Division, checked.
- 11:51Speaker 6: With all the bus depot personnel, but we were unable
- 11:53Speaker 6: to turn up any kind of a lead.
- 11:55Speaker 5: After that, we started making the rounds of the hotels, bars, restaurants,
- 11:58Speaker 5: and taxi cab stands in the nameborhood.
- 12:00Speaker 6: The same result. Nothing. Seven fifty five am.
- 12:03Speaker 5: The following morning, I reported back in for work money Joe, alright,
- 12:07Speaker 5: bety head check in yet?
- 12:08Speaker 12: Uh h, I went out for a minute, says be
- 12:10Speaker 12: right back.
- 12:10Speaker 6: What do you know anything.
- 12:11Speaker 12: New communication for you from the Tucson PD kick back
- 12:14Speaker 12: on that query you got off to him yesterday. Take
- 12:17Speaker 12: ed left it in near by.
- 12:18Speaker 6: Well, thanks, Betty, I'll get it.
- 12:22Speaker 11: M hmm.
- 12:23Speaker 6: Do you see that edge short coming?
- 12:25Speaker 12: Yeah, confirms the fact the woman had her baby in
- 12:27Speaker 12: that hospital.
- 12:28Speaker 6: Still not much help, though, Yeah, I say they checked
- 12:31Speaker 6: out her last known address in Tucson. Should move, no
- 12:33Speaker 6: forwarding address, no landin their relatives or friends.
- 12:36Speaker 12: The day the baby was borne seems to check.
- 12:38Speaker 6: Out June twenty fourth, Thanks for baby just about seven
- 12:42Speaker 6: weeks old. It's part here. Doesn't make much sense out
- 12:44Speaker 6: of it.
- 12:44Speaker 12: The Miller girl's description, Yeah, mis.
- 12:46Speaker 6: Lewis said Dorothy Miller was small and dark, long, dark haired,
- 12:49Speaker 6: dark eyes. People at the hospital described her as being blonde,
- 12:53Speaker 6: fairly tall, blue eyes, long blonde hair, about twenty nine,
- 12:56Speaker 6: thirty years old.
- 12:57Speaker 12: Missus Lewis said the Miller girl just turned twenty.
- 12:59Speaker 6: Didn't see she said, she doesn't figure.
- 13:01Speaker 12: A little too much to write off this coincidence to
- 13:04Speaker 12: Dorothy Miller's having babies same day, same hospital.
- 13:06Speaker 6: And I just sent this think this description of the
- 13:08Speaker 6: Miller girl, fairly tall, long lawn Here, there's Lewis has
- 13:12Speaker 6: long lawn here. Oh hi, Joe, Hi, what's doing?
- 13:16Speaker 4: A bus driver we wanted to talk to and wanted
- 13:18Speaker 4: to throw the bus Dorothy Miller and the baby came
- 13:19Speaker 4: in on yesterday. That description miss Lewis gave us A
- 13:22Speaker 4: Dorothy Miller driver doesn't remember anyone like that on his
- 13:25Speaker 4: buts he remembered miss Lewis. Though she didn't get on
- 13:27Speaker 4: the bus at Dallas. She didn't sit next to a
- 13:29Speaker 4: younger with a baby either.
- 13:30Speaker 6: Driver says, he's surely what's the pitch.
- 13:32Speaker 4: Lewis got on the bus at Tucsons she had a
- 13:34Speaker 4: baby in her arms.
- 13:46Speaker 3: You are listening to dragnet authentic stories of your police
- 13:49Speaker 3: force and action.
- 14:00Speaker 5: Jacobs and I went into the adjoining room, where we
- 14:02Speaker 5: continued to interview the bus driver. The same man who
- 14:04Speaker 5: had been driving a bus on which Missus Lewis and
- 14:06Speaker 5: the abandoned baby and his mother supposedly had arrived in
- 14:09Speaker 5: Los Angeles the day before. The more we talked to
- 14:12Speaker 5: the driver, the more he convinced it that the story
- 14:14Speaker 5: we'd gotten from Missus Marjorie Lewis was a long way
- 14:16Speaker 5: from the truth.
- 14:18Speaker 6: He repeated that he was absolutely sure.
- 14:20Speaker 5: That Missus Lewis did not get on the bus at Dallas,
- 14:22Speaker 5: that she boarded the bush at Tucsons, and that at
- 14:25Speaker 5: the time she got on she was holding a baby
- 14:27Speaker 5: in her arms. He was just as positive that Missus
- 14:29Speaker 5: Lewis held a baby in her arms all the way
- 14:31Speaker 5: to Los Angeles, and that she did not sit next
- 14:33Speaker 5: to a young, dark haired girl, but an elderly woman.
- 14:36Speaker 5: He also told us that none of his passengers on
- 14:38Speaker 5: that particular trip fitted the description of Dorothy Miller has
- 14:41Speaker 5: given us by Missus Lewis. Eight fifty am before the
- 14:45Speaker 5: bus driver left, we got his address and a phone
- 14:47Speaker 5: number where we could get in touch with him if necessary.
- 14:50Speaker 5: Nine oh five, Ams Ed and I got in the
- 14:52Speaker 5: car go to the downtown hotel where.
- 14:54Speaker 6: Missus Lewis was staying and.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Called her room from the phone in the lobby. She
- 14:58Speaker 5: told us that her husband, Army and Walter Lewis, had
- 15:01Speaker 5: arrived in from overseas earlier that morning and checked in
- 15:04Speaker 5: at the hotel.
- 15:05Speaker 6: I asked her if her.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Husband was with her, but she said no, he was
- 15:08Speaker 5: downstairs at the.
- 15:09Speaker 6: Hotel barber shop ed and I got in the elevator
- 15:11Speaker 6: and went up to see her.
- 15:13Speaker 5: Outside and down on the street you could hear the
- 15:15Speaker 5: sounds of a parade passing by. It was American Legion
- 15:18Speaker 5: Conventional week, the traditional parade, some.
- 15:24Speaker 6: Parade in this.
- 15:28Speaker 8: Oh, good morning, come in free, Thank you very.
- 15:31Speaker 6: Much, ma'am.
- 15:33Speaker 4: What happened?
- 15:33Speaker 7: Did you find out anything?
- 15:34Speaker 6: Well, A few things, ma'am. We've been checking around.
- 15:36Speaker 5: Two or three more questions we'd like to ask you
- 15:38Speaker 5: if you don't mind, well, no, not at all.
- 15:39Speaker 7: How the baby are they taking care of it?
- 15:41Speaker 6: The yes, ma'am, it's fine and checked at the hospital.
- 15:43Speaker 6: Is doing real well.
- 15:44Speaker 8: I'm goad and the mirror's girl, do I see Millie?
- 15:46Speaker 8: Did you find out anything?
- 15:47Speaker 4: We have been able to low kid, I know treasure
- 15:49Speaker 4: at all. While we're here, Miss Lewis, a few things
- 15:51Speaker 4: we'd like to have you straightened out for us.
- 15:52Speaker 10: Well, I'll do.
- 15:53Speaker 9: Anything I can to help, since I already told you
- 15:56Speaker 9: everything I could remember about the girl.
- 15:57Speaker 6: Well, now we're going to be honest with you, miss Lewis.
- 16:00Speaker 6: I don't think you're telling the truth.
- 16:02Speaker 8: I don't understand.
- 16:03Speaker 6: Doctor.
- 16:03Speaker 5: The man who was driving a bus you came in
- 16:04Speaker 5: on yesterday, the same bush you say Dorothy Miller and
- 16:07Speaker 5: her baby were on.
- 16:08Speaker 7: Yes, that's right.
- 16:08Speaker 5: Well, the bus driver couldn't remember the Miller girl told
- 16:11Speaker 5: us none of his passions and even came close to
- 16:12Speaker 5: her description.
- 16:13Speaker 8: Well, there was quite a few people on the bus.
- 16:15Speaker 10: I guess you can't blame for not remembering it.
- 16:17Speaker 4: You remembered you, miss Lewis, you were sitting there at
- 16:19Speaker 4: the front of the bus. He doesn't remember anyone with
- 16:21Speaker 4: a baby sitting next to.
- 16:22Speaker 8: You, though, I guess you made a mistake. You can't
- 16:23Speaker 8: remember everything when they said you.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Were holding a baby.
- 16:26Speaker 7: I don't understand.
- 16:27Speaker 10: What is it you're trying to find out.
- 16:29Speaker 6: Well, we talked to you yesterday. You told us that
- 16:31Speaker 6: she got on the bus of Dallas.
- 16:32Speaker 11: Isn't it right?
- 16:33Speaker 10: Yes? What would that have to do with it?
- 16:35Speaker 5: The bus driver says, you got on a Tucson you
- 16:37Speaker 5: seemed to remember pretty well. He says, when he got
- 16:39Speaker 5: on the bus, you were holding.
- 16:40Speaker 6: A baby in your arms.
- 16:40Speaker 10: That's silly. He's wrong.
- 16:42Speaker 7: He must have leaking kids with somebody else.
- 16:44Speaker 4: I don't see how man. He says, you were the
- 16:46Speaker 4: only woman on the bus with a baby.
- 16:47Speaker 10: What's the point of his charge. I don't understand any
- 16:50Speaker 10: of this.
- 16:50Speaker 5: Well, Frankly needed to weave. I don't know why you're
- 16:53Speaker 5: lying to us about this, but apparently you are.
- 16:55Speaker 10: You're wrong. I'm not lying.
- 16:57Speaker 7: It happened just the way I told you. The girl
- 16:58Speaker 7: gave me the baby to hold, and then she disappeared.
- 17:00Speaker 7: There's no reason for me to lie about that.
- 17:03Speaker 5: We find a receipt for a hospital Doloment, the least
- 17:05Speaker 5: with the baby's things in it. The receipt was made
- 17:07Speaker 5: out to Dorothy Miller.
- 17:08Speaker 10: Well, that's proves it justice.
- 17:09Speaker 8: She was on the bus with us, and her baby
- 17:11Speaker 8: was with us.
- 17:12Speaker 4: The check was made with a hospital too. Son. They
- 17:14Speaker 4: remember the name Dorothy Miller. She gave birth to a
- 17:16Speaker 4: baby boy about seven weeks ago. She wasn't the same
- 17:18Speaker 4: girl you described to us, though the description wasn't even closer.
- 17:21Speaker 7: Then it must be a mistake. I guess somebody made
- 17:24Speaker 7: a mistake.
- 17:24Speaker 10: I can't understand any of this.
- 17:26Speaker 6: Well.
- 17:26Speaker 4: They sent us back a description of the Dorothy Miller,
- 17:28Speaker 4: who said at the hospital it's a fairly tall woman,
- 17:30Speaker 4: long blonde hair, by twenty nine to thirty. Yes, description
- 17:33Speaker 4: fits humans, Lois, that's almost perfectly.
- 17:35Speaker 6: It's wrong.
- 17:36Speaker 10: It has to be wrong.
- 17:37Speaker 8: Who think's a mistake.
- 17:38Speaker 11: I beg your pie.
- 17:39Speaker 7: I say the whole thing is a mistake. It has
- 17:41Speaker 7: to be wrong.
- 17:42Speaker 6: No, I don't think so, ma'am.
- 17:44Speaker 7: Why don't you tell me what did you think?
- 17:48Speaker 6: Tell me there is no Dorothy Miller. There never was.
- 17:51Speaker 6: There's no such person, ma'am.
- 17:52Speaker 10: That's what you really think. I invented it. I made
- 17:55Speaker 10: it all up.
- 17:56Speaker 6: Did you.
- 18:00Speaker 10: And the baby?
- 18:01Speaker 8: What about him?
- 18:03Speaker 7: There's no dog for your miller? What about the baby?
- 18:05Speaker 6: I don't know. You want to tell us, Miss Lewis?
- 18:12Speaker 4: Yes, yes, Louis, and I guess something.
- 18:17Speaker 6: Boy, you are all right.
- 18:20Speaker 10: I suppose I knew it would happen sometimes I.
- 18:23Speaker 7: Try not to think about it. H and you call
- 18:26Speaker 7: from downstairs. I knew you'd found out.
- 18:30Speaker 10: That's why. Yes, my husband was with me, isn't it
- 18:32Speaker 10: He didn't want to embarrass you.
- 18:34Speaker 5: We wanted to give you a chance to tell your
- 18:35Speaker 5: side of the story, but maybe you wanted to keep
- 18:37Speaker 5: it from your husband.
- 18:38Speaker 10: No, it doesn't matter. I'll tell him. We'll be back
- 18:41Speaker 10: in a few minutes. You can do anything he wants.
- 18:44Speaker 10: I won't blame you. We'll pack your bags and walk
- 18:47Speaker 10: up and leave, and I won't blame him.
- 18:49Speaker 11: All right, You want to tell us about him, Well,
- 18:51Speaker 11: I think you.
- 18:52Speaker 8: Know my baby, my own baby, and I shouldn't keep him.
- 18:58Speaker 7: There wasn't anything else to.
- 18:59Speaker 10: Do, susin.
- 19:03Speaker 7: My own baby.
- 19:04Speaker 4: You made up the whole story. But the girl died
- 19:06Speaker 4: and Millner are leaving a baby with you?
- 19:09Speaker 6: Is Louis.
- 19:13Speaker 10: It's a beautiful day, big crowd for the parade and
- 19:17Speaker 10: lined all the way up the street.
- 19:18Speaker 6: You must have had a reason for him, his louis
- 19:20Speaker 6: giving your baby away. Now do you want to tell
- 19:21Speaker 6: us about it?
- 19:23Speaker 10: Yeah? Sorry, it won't make a difference to done. It's
- 19:27Speaker 10: all done. My husband. I'm thinking about Wilder. I'm going
- 19:33Speaker 10: to have to hurt him, and I don't want to
- 19:34Speaker 10: hurt him. I don't know I'm going to tell him.
- 19:38Speaker 10: I tried to make him understand all the time before
- 19:41Speaker 10: he left, her overseas. It's almost two years ago. I
- 19:44Speaker 10: tried to make him understand. He wouldn't listen. He didn't believe.
- 19:47Speaker 10: He thought I was fooling. Yes, I love him start
- 19:50Speaker 10: and I tried to explain, I just want to be alone.
- 19:53Speaker 10: Having him away all the time. I knew it was
- 19:56Speaker 10: going to be trouble. I knew it. I didn't want
- 19:58Speaker 10: to be alone. He didn't understan. He only said I
- 20:00Speaker 10: was schooling. He left for overseason October. All the almost
- 20:06Speaker 10: two years ago. I went down to Wilmington. I saw
- 20:10Speaker 10: him leave on the boat, so then watched him go.
- 20:14Speaker 10: I wasn't going to see it twenty four months. Wouldn't
- 20:17Speaker 10: see no children, no family. It's the two room apartments.
- 20:22Speaker 10: You would believe. You only would have taken me with him.
- 20:26Speaker 6: Where were you living at that time?
- 20:27Speaker 10: Man up the coast, just the side of Santa Barbara.
- 20:31Speaker 10: I told what I couldn't be alone. I needed something.
- 20:36Speaker 10: They only had children. He'd only taken me with it.
- 20:39Speaker 10: Didn't have to be this way.
- 20:41Speaker 7: He could have taken me with him, he could have
- 20:43Speaker 7: arranged it.
- 20:43Speaker 10: He wouldn't. He left me alone. I tried to tell him,
- 20:47Speaker 10: he left me here alone. Yeah, I took it for
- 20:50Speaker 10: a year, a whole year, two room apartments, being alone.
- 20:55Speaker 10: I wrote to Walter twice a week.
- 20:56Speaker 12: He wrote to me.
- 20:57Speaker 6: Did he do any good?
- 20:59Speaker 10: He didn't want me with him a whole year and
- 21:03Speaker 10: it got too much.
- 21:04Speaker 4: You mean you could have joined him overseas.
- 21:05Speaker 9: I don't know why kept writing to him. He kept
- 21:08Speaker 9: putting me off a whole year. It got too much
- 21:10Speaker 9: to room apartment alone. You can't spend your life that way.
- 21:14Speaker 9: I started going out, having dates. I had to get out,
- 21:17Speaker 9: started going to party different people just I drank too much.
- 21:21Speaker 9: Didn't want to be alone. It's always drunk. There's one party.
- 21:26Speaker 9: I don't even remember who I went with if I
- 21:28Speaker 9: was drinking. I don't know when I left. I don't
- 21:31Speaker 9: even remember who I was put didn't have to be
- 21:35Speaker 9: This didn't have to happen.
- 21:40Speaker 6: Are you all right, miss lord? And there's something when
- 21:42Speaker 6: you get.
- 21:42Speaker 10: You, I'm all right. I didn't know what to do
- 21:46Speaker 10: when the problem other doctors. He didn't understand you, I
- 21:51Speaker 10: mean the way I felt. Said the baby would be
- 21:54Speaker 10: born in June. I cried. He didn't understand.
- 21:59Speaker 6: That's nice.
- 22:00Speaker 10: When the time came, I went to Tucson Arizona had
- 22:02Speaker 10: my baby. At least I wasn't alone. Used a different
- 22:07Speaker 10: name in the hospital, Dorothy Miller. Maybe it wasn't Walter's baby,
- 22:12Speaker 10: but it was mine, but mine. I thought at first
- 22:16Speaker 10: it wouldn't make much differs, But it did, though, did ah?
- 22:21Speaker 10: I knew what it means. I loved Walter and I
- 22:24Speaker 10: still love him. If you found out I knew.
- 22:27Speaker 7: What it would mean, I couldn't even think about it.
- 22:31Speaker 10: I love Walter. I couldn't even think about telling him.
- 22:34Speaker 6: So do you think you don't giving up the baby?
- 22:36Speaker 6: Giving him away? About the idea, I can't.
- 22:38Speaker 10: Tell you how many times I worked it out in
- 22:39Speaker 10: my mind, day after day.
- 22:40Speaker 7: I almost went crazy with it. Walder the baby was won.
- 22:44Speaker 10: I finally decided Walter the thing was fair.
- 22:49Speaker 6: Won't you well? I wouldn't know, man, it's your decisions
- 22:52Speaker 6: up to you.
- 22:53Speaker 10: I don't know how to tell him. Won't you help me?
- 22:56Speaker 10: Please help me? Tell Walter?
- 22:58Speaker 6: All right?
- 22:59Speaker 10: You're like oame.
- 23:01Speaker 8: I mean to make a choice.
- 23:02Speaker 10: When you have to hurt somebody have to choose between
- 23:05Speaker 10: the two of them, one of them has to be churched.
- 23:08Speaker 10: Ma'am her husband and markas which one.
- 23:15Speaker 5: Ten thirty eight am at missus lewis request, and I
- 23:18Speaker 5: stayed on at the hotel room until her husband, Army
- 23:20Speaker 5: Captain Walller Lewis, returned. He was a tall, dark haired
- 23:24Speaker 5: man in his late thirty dark eyes and complexion. Missus
- 23:27Speaker 5: Lewis was waiting in the adjoining room. It wasn't easy,
- 23:30Speaker 5: but as best we could ed and I breached the husband.
- 23:32Speaker 6: On what had happened. His first reaction was fairly normal.
- 23:36Speaker 5: He took it pretty hard. We kept on talking to him.
- 23:39Speaker 5: After a while he calmed down. We laid out the
- 23:41Speaker 5: whole story for him again.
- 23:43Speaker 11: She's turned the baby over to police.
- 23:44Speaker 6: Is that it?
- 23:45Speaker 11: She gave the baby up.
- 23:46Speaker 4: Yes, she figured it was the only things he could do.
- 23:49Speaker 11: It's kind of hard to believe in. What's the answer?
- 23:53Speaker 11: What am I supposed to do?
- 23:54Speaker 10: All?
- 23:54Speaker 5: Sure, I know some of our business captains. I think
- 23:57Speaker 5: you might try looking at it from your wife's point
- 23:59Speaker 5: of view. Maybe, But I mean I'm pretty obvious she's
- 24:02Speaker 5: still in love with you. I think she's showing you that. Yeah, well,
- 24:07Speaker 5: she was in a jam. It was a big choice
- 24:09Speaker 5: for it to Mike. She knew she was wrong, she
- 24:11Speaker 5: made a mistake. She was ready to pay for it.
- 24:14Speaker 5: It was either you or the baby.
- 24:15Speaker 11: She knew that.
- 24:17Speaker 6: She decided to give up the baby. Baby's all right now,
- 24:20Speaker 6: somebody's taking care of her.
- 24:22Speaker 4: Yes, sir, baby boy.
- 24:24Speaker 11: Where's March?
- 24:25Speaker 6: Now?
- 24:25Speaker 11: My wife in the next room.
- 24:28Speaker 6: I want to say her, Well, maybe you should wait
- 24:30Speaker 6: this a little while.
- 24:31Speaker 11: It's all right.
- 24:32Speaker 6: I just want to tell her something.
- 24:33Speaker 10: A h.
- 24:40Speaker 6: All right today, all right, you don't have to say anything, March.
- 24:51Speaker 7: We'll do what you want.
- 24:52Speaker 10: I don't right, got it right, don't do anything to work.
- 24:57Speaker 10: I just want to tell you I love you.
- 25:00Speaker 6: And then, okay, get.
- 25:05Speaker 11: On my come on.
- 25:07Speaker 6: I will anything you can do. I won't play. It's
- 25:12Speaker 6: gonna be all right, honey, nothing to cry about.
- 25:16Speaker 11: Everything will be all right. Try and take me. Do
- 25:22Speaker 11: you got a little mistakes?
- 25:25Speaker 6: Right?
- 25:26Speaker 11: I guess I made my share of it?
- 25:29Speaker 6: Oh my god? Often?
- 25:32Speaker 11: Yes, like that your favorite? You got a car downstairs? Yes,
- 25:40Speaker 11: we do. W if your mind dropping me by the hospital.
- 25:46Speaker 11: I like to see my son.
- 25:55Speaker 6: The story you have just heard was true.
- 25:58Speaker 4: The names were changed to protect Unison.
- 26:00Speaker 3: On Thursday, August fifteenth, a meeting withheld in the District
- 26:03Speaker 3: Attorney's Office at Ian County of Los Angeles, State of California,
- 26:07Speaker 3: in a moment the results of that meeting. At the
- 26:17Speaker 3: meeting and the District Attorney's office, it was decided that,
- 26:20Speaker 3: in the interests of justice, no criminal complaint be filed
- 26:23Speaker 3: against missus Marjorie Lewis.
- 26:25Speaker 4: The baby was released to the custody of her and
- 26:27Speaker 4: her husband.

- 26:35Speaker 13: The editors of Radio and Television Mirror are happy to
- 26:37Speaker 13: announce that in the annual awards poll conducted by Radio

- 26:47Speaker 13: to the second consecutive year. In addition, the nation's radio
- 26:50Speaker 13: listeners had voted Jack Webb their favorite dramatic radio actor.
- 26:54Speaker 6: Thank you very much, Betty on behalf of our cast,
- 26:56Speaker 6: our entire production staff, and myself.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Be sure to read the feature story about Jack Webb
- 27:00Speaker 2: and the current issue of Radio and Television Mirror Magazine
- 27:03Speaker 2: now on the newsstands.
- 27:20Speaker 3: You have just heard drag Mat a series of authentic
- 27:23Speaker 3: cases from official files. Technical advice comes from the.
- 27:26Speaker 4: Office of Chief of Police W. H.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Parker, Los Angeles Police Department Technical Advisors, Captain Jack Donaho,
- 27:33Speaker 3: Sergeant Hardy Winn, Sergeant vans Bracher. Heard tonight were Barney Phillips,
- 27:37Speaker 3: Virginia Craig, Harry Bartel, Helen Fleeve. Script by Jim Moser,
- 27:41Speaker 3: music by Walter Schumann. Hell give me speaking.
- 28:01Speaker 6: No, It's coder Spy on NBC.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Welcome back. Well, this one is a favorite of mine.
- 28:15Speaker 1: It's a very human episode on a lot of levels. There's,
- 28:19Speaker 1: of course some small ways, such as having Friday and
- 28:24Speaker 1: Jacobs find a hotel room with a big convention in
- 28:29Speaker 1: town that's not necessarily something you would associate that sort
- 28:33Speaker 1: of level of service. I do have a sense that
- 28:38Speaker 1: working in juvenile you might have been more familiar with
- 28:41Speaker 1: that sort of setup than if you'd worked in other departments.
- 28:45Speaker 1: And of course, the case itself comes down to messy
- 28:50Speaker 1: human failings and trying to figure out how to deal
- 28:54Speaker 1: with it. And again you see some great compassion from
- 28:59Speaker 1: Friday and Jacobs in going beyond the legally required investigation
- 29:06Speaker 1: to help tell the husband, and they walked a fine
- 29:10Speaker 1: line in doing that, even in suggesting that he consider
- 29:16Speaker 1: things from his wist's point of view. Broddy was clear
- 29:19Speaker 1: that he knew that this was not really his business.
- 29:23Speaker 1: They did try to achieve some level of understanding, and
- 29:27Speaker 1: that also might be another reflection of the nature of
- 29:32Speaker 1: the work in the juvenile division as opposed to other
- 29:36Speaker 1: areas within the LAPD. The radio version of this episode
- 29:41Speaker 1: caused no particular controversy. However, once it aired on television,
- 29:46Speaker 1: there were people who felt that the episode was in
- 29:51Speaker 1: some way promoting or excusing adultery, which seems to sadly
- 29:58Speaker 1: miss the point of of what the episode was portrayed,
- 30:02Speaker 1: as the episode made no attempt to excuse immoral behavior,
- 30:08Speaker 1: but rather showed a compassionate response in the aftermath or
- 30:14Speaker 1: all involved. I think it's actually quite a beautiful story,
- 30:18Speaker 1: particularly for a series like Dragnet, which can often have
- 30:22Speaker 1: some really rough turns. All right, listener comments and feedback now,
- 30:27Speaker 1: and we have a comment on Spotify regarding the big
- 30:31Speaker 1: rows from a random Spotify user. When I find out
- 30:35Speaker 1: that the person raising me is capable of murder and
- 30:38Speaker 1: getting away with it when a curfew is set, I
- 30:42Speaker 1: am home on time every night. Well, as I said
- 30:46Speaker 1: on a recent Johnny Dowler episode, there is homicide, but
- 30:52Speaker 1: not all homicides are murders by any measure. The whole
- 30:57Speaker 1: situation with her sister was very fraught, It was emotionally charged.
- 31:05Speaker 1: She alleged that the sister attacked her and she acted
- 31:10Speaker 1: in self defense, and the court believed her. And even
- 31:14Speaker 1: if it had been decided that the actions were inappropriate
- 31:22Speaker 1: for self defense, I couldn't see her being convicted of
- 31:25Speaker 1: murder at most manslaughter. But then again, if you're a
- 31:29Speaker 1: kid thinking about ditching curfew, does that fine distinction actually matter.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Then we have a comment from Martin over on our
- 31:38Speaker 1: listener survey, who rites with Adam as our host for
- 31:41Speaker 1: Old Time Radio. We've discovered so many great programs and
- 31:44Speaker 1: stories a well considered god to old radio dramas well.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Thank you so much, appreciate you taking the time to
- 31:51Speaker 1: fill that out from over in London, England. Now it's
