- 0:02Speaker 1: Life Audio. Hey, and good morning, faithful listeners. Welcome to
- 0:06Speaker 1: the Bible, explained a podcast on this absolutely lovely morning.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Jen, and I am excited that you're
- 0:13Speaker 1: here to share delicious cup of coffee with me as
- 0:15Speaker 1: we discuss Hebrews seven today. Hey, I want to apologize
- 0:24Speaker 1: for Tuesday's episode. You may have noticed that it wasn't there.
- 0:30Speaker 1: That's because I accidentally scheduled the episode for five forty
- 0:34Speaker 1: five PM instead of five forty five AM, and I
- 0:39Speaker 1: did not notice that until about two or three pm.
- 0:41Speaker 1: I can't remember when I logged on, and you know,
- 0:44Speaker 1: the episode was there, but it didn't have any views,
- 0:46Speaker 1: and I'm like, hmmm, something seems a little wrong with that.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And I was like, either nobody wants to listen to
- 0:53Speaker 1: this episode or I did something wrong. So I looked
- 0:55Speaker 1: and realized that I had not scheduled it for the
- 0:58Speaker 1: proper time. So I apogize for that. And no, I
- 1:01Speaker 1: don't do these episodes live. If you're just discovering that now,
- 1:04Speaker 1: I don't do them live. I usually do them the
- 1:06Speaker 1: day before. So for example, this episode that I'm recording
- 1:10Speaker 1: right now is being done yesterday for you guys, but
- 1:13Speaker 1: it is today for me, all right, faith for listeners,
- 1:17Speaker 1: Let's go ahead and get into our text for today,
- 1:20Speaker 1: Hebrews chapter seven versus eleven through twenty two. Grab your
- 1:24Speaker 1: Bible and also pay attention to this quick ad break
- 1:27Speaker 1: from a sponsor before we begin today's episode. Okay, hopefully
- 1:32Speaker 1: you have your delicious cup of coffee here to share
- 1:35Speaker 1: with me. I actually have been drinking black coffee again recently. Yeah,
- 1:39Speaker 1: I'm back to coffee. I have been drinking coffee every
- 1:43Speaker 1: single day actually, and it has not been bothering me
- 1:45Speaker 1: this time. And I know I say that every single time,
- 1:48Speaker 1: and then I stop drinking coffee because it suddenly starts
- 1:51Speaker 1: to bother me again. But I'm telling you, I think
- 1:53Speaker 1: this is the time. I think I can finally tolerate
- 1:56Speaker 1: coffee again. In fact, I've been going through quite a
- 2:00Speaker 1: process with my health these past few months, and I
- 2:03Speaker 1: actually think I figured out what is wrong with me.
- 2:05Speaker 1: So that is a huge, huge praise. I am beyond
- 2:09Speaker 1: thankful that these terrible stomach aches are not happening like
- 2:13Speaker 1: they used to. So thank God for that. All right,
- 2:16Speaker 1: let's read Hebrew seven eleven through twenty two together. Grab
- 2:19Speaker 1: your cup of coffee and let's give reverence to God's
- 2:21Speaker 1: word together. Now, if perfection was through the levitical priesthood,
- 2:26Speaker 1: for under it the people have received the law, what
- 2:29Speaker 1: further need was there for another priest to arise after
- 2:31Speaker 1: the order of Melchisedec and not be called after the
- 2:34Speaker 1: order of Erin. For the priesthood being changed, there is
- 2:37Speaker 1: of necessity a change made also in the law. For
- 2:40Speaker 1: he of whom these things are said, belongs to another
- 2:42Speaker 1: tribe from which no one has officiated at the altar.
- 2:46Speaker 1: For it is evident that our Lord has sprung out
- 2:48Speaker 1: of Judah, about which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning the priesthood.
- 2:52Speaker 1: This is yet more abundantly evident if after the likeness
- 2:55Speaker 1: of Malchisedec there arises another priest who has been made
- 2:59Speaker 1: not after the law of fleshly commandment, but after the
- 3:01Speaker 1: power of an endless life. For it is testified you
- 3:05Speaker 1: are a priest forever according to the order of Melchisedec.
- 3:09Speaker 1: For there is an annulling of a foregoing commandment because
- 3:11Speaker 1: of its weakness and uselessness. For the law made nothing perfect,
- 3:15Speaker 1: and a bringing in of a better hope through which
- 3:18Speaker 1: we draw near to God. Inasmuch as he was not
- 3:21Speaker 1: made priest without the taking of an oath, For they
- 3:23Speaker 1: indeed have been made priests without an oath, but he
- 3:26Speaker 1: with an oath. By him that says of him, the
- 3:28Speaker 1: Lord swore and will not change his mind. You are
- 3:31Speaker 1: a priest forever according to the Order of Melchisedek. By
- 3:34Speaker 1: so much, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.
- 3:40Speaker 1: If you guys recall on Tuesday we talked about who
- 3:43Speaker 1: Malchisedek was and why he is so important, and why
- 3:46Speaker 1: Jesus is a priest in the Order of Malchisedek, And
- 3:50Speaker 1: just to do a quick recap, Malchisedec was only mentioned
- 3:53Speaker 1: twice in the Old Testament, once in the Book of
- 3:55Speaker 1: Genesis when he encountered Abraham and then again in Psalm.
- 4:00Speaker 1: Those are the only two times Malchisedec is mentioned in
- 4:03Speaker 1: the Old Testament. All the other times he's mentioned in
- 4:06Speaker 1: the Book of Hebrews, and he's mentioned quite a bit actually,
- 4:09Speaker 1: so we know very little about the priesthood of Malchisedek
- 4:13Speaker 1: other than the fact that it's a picture of Jesus,
- 4:16Speaker 1: and we talked about all of that on Tuesday. So
- 4:19Speaker 1: now it says in verse eleven. If perfection was made
- 4:22Speaker 1: through the levitical priesthood, for under it the people have
- 4:25Speaker 1: received the law, what further need was there for another
- 4:29Speaker 1: priest to arise after the order of Malchisedek. So, in
- 4:33Speaker 1: other words, the author is making this point. If the
- 4:36Speaker 1: levitical priesthood could save, like say, it was perfect, then
- 4:40Speaker 1: why did Jesus have to come and why is he
- 4:43Speaker 1: a priest after the order of Malchisedec instead of the
- 4:46Speaker 1: order of the Levites. Because don't forget what a lot
- 4:50Speaker 1: of people were believing at this time period. They believed
- 4:54Speaker 1: that Jesus was not sufficient to save. Yes, you had
- 4:57Speaker 1: to believe in Jesus, but you also had to follow
- 5:00Speaker 1: the Old Testament laws. You also had to do the
- 5:02Speaker 1: sacrifices with the priest, and you had to follow all
- 5:05Speaker 1: the civil and ceremonial laws laid out in the Old Testament.
- 5:09Speaker 1: But the author is saying, no, we don't have to
- 5:11Speaker 1: do this because Jesus is enough to save us. We
- 5:14Speaker 1: don't need the levitical priests to save anymore. Because that
- 5:18Speaker 1: order is incomplete, it is not perfect. He says, if
- 5:22Speaker 1: perfection was through the levitical priesthood, what further need was
- 5:26Speaker 1: there for another priest to arise after the order of
- 5:29Speaker 1: Malchisedec and not be called after the order of Erin.
- 5:34Speaker 1: So the levitical priests cannot save. They cannot save, And
- 5:39Speaker 1: that might make you question, well, then why did God
- 5:41Speaker 1: put that in place from the beginning. Why didn't God
- 5:44Speaker 1: just send to Jesus from the very beginning. Well, the
- 5:46Speaker 1: easy answer to that is the levitical law teaches us
- 5:49Speaker 1: what God's perfect standards are. And this is necessary for
- 5:53Speaker 1: us to know because when we look at the Old
- 5:56Speaker 1: Testament laws, we know we can't keep them. I mean,
- 5:58Speaker 1: if you break just one of them, you no longer
- 6:01Speaker 1: are perfect, like you have been stained with imperfection forever.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Nobody can keep the Old Testament laws. They are the
- 6:07Speaker 1: standard for perfection, and we had to understand that in
- 6:11Speaker 1: order to understand our need for a savior and why
- 6:14Speaker 1: we have to believe in Jesus. So that's the easy
- 6:16Speaker 1: and short answer as to why God did not send
- 6:19Speaker 1: Jesus immediately. But that's such a nuanced question. We could
- 6:23Speaker 1: actually talk about that for hours and hours and hours,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and I even scratch the surface of it. If you're
- 6:28Speaker 1: curious about why Jesus came in the time period that
- 6:31Speaker 1: he came. There's actually a really good book on it.
- 6:33Speaker 1: It's called Person of Interest. It was written by Jay
- 6:36Speaker 1: Warner Wallace, and I really liked the book. It was
- 6:40Speaker 1: something that I read in my personal time, and it
- 6:42Speaker 1: went through just the necessity of Jesus coming at the
- 6:46Speaker 1: time that he came, both culturally, historically spiritually, like all
- 6:52Speaker 1: the different ways why Jesus came in the first century eighty.
- 6:57Speaker 1: So it's a good resource for you if you are
- 6:58Speaker 1: interested in that topic. But regardless, the author of Hebrews
- 7:03Speaker 1: is making this point. The laws don't make anybody perfect.
- 7:07Speaker 1: The levitical priests don't make anybody perfect. In fact, the
- 7:10Speaker 1: priests themselves are not perfect. So somebody had to come
- 7:15Speaker 1: in order to bring this perfection forward, to bring the
- 7:19Speaker 1: salvation forward. So that is why Jesus is under the
- 7:22Speaker 1: order of Malchisedek. Instead of this imperfect priesthood. For the
- 7:27Speaker 1: priesthood being changed, there is of necessity a change made
- 7:31Speaker 1: also in the law. So I mean that is as
- 7:34Speaker 1: straightforward as you can get. If the priesthood is going
- 7:37Speaker 1: to change, then the law must also change in order
- 7:40Speaker 1: to compensate for that. For he of whom these things
- 7:44Speaker 1: are said belongs to another tribe from which no one
- 7:48Speaker 1: has officiated at the altar. For it is evident that
- 7:51Speaker 1: our Lord has sprung out of Judah, about which tribe
- 7:54Speaker 1: Moses spoke nothing concerning the priesthood. So that's why the
- 7:58Speaker 1: laws had to change. Because Jesus was not from the
- 8:01Speaker 1: tribe of Levi. He was from the tribe of Judah,
- 8:03Speaker 1: as we know. In fact, we have Jesus's genealogy laid
- 8:06Speaker 1: out for us in scripture all the way to the
- 8:09Speaker 1: first man ever created, Adam. We know Jesus's genealogy. He
- 8:14Speaker 1: is from the tribe of Judah. And because the priests
- 8:19Speaker 1: in the Old Testament weren't from the tribe of Judah,
- 8:22Speaker 1: but from the tribe of Levi, obviously, according to the
- 8:27Speaker 1: priesthood of the Levites, Jesus was not eligible to become
- 8:31Speaker 1: a priest. So this is one of the reasons why
- 8:34Speaker 1: the law had to change. It says in verse fourteen
- 8:36Speaker 1: and fifteen, It's evident that our Lord's sprung out of Judah,
- 8:39Speaker 1: about which tribe Moses spoke nothing concerning the priesthood. This
- 8:42Speaker 1: is yet more abundantly evident if after the likeness of Malchisedec.
- 8:47Speaker 1: There arises another priest who has been made not after
- 8:50Speaker 1: the law of fleshy commandment, but after the power of
- 8:53Speaker 1: an endless life. For it is testified you are a
- 8:57Speaker 1: priest forever according to the order of Malchisa Dek. And
- 9:02Speaker 1: so that brings us to Psalm one ten, verse one,
- 9:07Speaker 1: and also verse four. And this is a psalm by David.
- 9:10Speaker 1: This is David outrightly prophesying about Jesus. Here's what it says.
- 9:16Speaker 1: In Psalm one ten, starting in verse one, Yahweh says
- 9:19Speaker 1: to my lord, sit at my right hand until I
- 9:22Speaker 1: make your enemies your footstool of your feet. So, David,
- 9:26Speaker 1: here is prophesying. Here's what Yahweh said to my lord.
- 9:31Speaker 1: In other words, Jesus the Messiah, sit at my right
- 9:34Speaker 1: hand until I make your enemies your footstool for your feet.
- 9:37Speaker 1: So that is prophecy of what is happening right now
- 9:41Speaker 1: at this moment in time, until Jesus comes back again.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Jesus is sitting at the Father's right hand, waiting for
- 9:49Speaker 1: the Father to complete everything and make Jesus's enemies underneath him.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Here's verse two of this prophecy. Yahweh will send out
- 9:58Speaker 1: the rod of your strength, out of Zion rule. Among
- 10:01Speaker 1: your enemies, your people offer themselves willingly in the day
- 10:05Speaker 1: of your power, in a holy array. Out of the
- 10:08Speaker 1: womb of the morning. You have the doo of your youth.
- 10:12Speaker 1: Yahweh has sworn and will not change his mind. Verse four.
- 10:16Speaker 1: You are a priest forever in the order of Malchisedek.
- 10:22Speaker 1: And then the prophecy goes on for another few verses.
- 10:26Speaker 1: But David himself, who was a prophet, was prophesying that
- 10:31Speaker 1: the Messiah would not be a priest under the order
- 10:35Speaker 1: of Aaron or the Levites, but that he would be
- 10:38Speaker 1: a priest in the order of Malchisedek. Which is really
- 10:43Speaker 1: interesting that David understood this and knew this. David knew
- 10:47Speaker 1: that the priesthood was flawed and that there had to
- 10:50Speaker 1: be another priesthood to come forward because of the fallen
- 10:54Speaker 1: nature of man. You know, once again, the Old Testament
- 10:57Speaker 1: laws were given to us to show us our sin,
- 11:01Speaker 1: to show us what perfection could look like, and how
- 11:04Speaker 1: we just cannot achieve it. We can't achieve it. The
- 11:08Speaker 1: Old Testament laws, they're not possible to achieve, even if
- 11:11Speaker 1: you think you achieved them. Jesus told us in the
- 11:15Speaker 1: New Testament, you don't, because if you've ever hated somebody
- 11:18Speaker 1: in your heart, then you've broken a law. You have
- 11:21Speaker 1: committed murder. If you've ever looked at something or someone lustfully,
- 11:26Speaker 1: then you've committed the sin of adultery. Even if you
- 11:28Speaker 1: haven't physically gone out and done the adultere even sins
- 11:32Speaker 1: of the heart or sins of the mind, these things
- 11:36Speaker 1: actually cause us to break the Old Testament laws. And
- 11:40Speaker 1: so nobody, a single person, can keep the Old Testament
- 11:43Speaker 1: laws perfectly, except for somebody who is perfect, which is
- 11:47Speaker 1: Jesus himself. So Jesus came to Earth to perfect what
- 11:52Speaker 1: was flawed. Now, don't get me wrong, the Old Testament
- 11:55Speaker 1: laws themselves weren't flawed, because obviously they were the standard
- 12:00Speaker 1: for righteousness. But people are flawed. Anytime a person is
- 12:05Speaker 1: put into a position, it's going to be flawed because
- 12:08Speaker 1: that individual is flawed. So Jesus came and changed this.
- 12:13Speaker 1: And he is a priest in the order of Melchisedic,
- 12:16Speaker 1: not under the order of Erin. Now, going back to
- 12:19Speaker 1: Hebrews seven, for there is an annulling of a foregoing
- 12:22Speaker 1: commandment because of its weakness and uselessness, for the law
- 12:27Speaker 1: made nothing perfect, and of bringing in of better hope
- 12:30Speaker 1: through which we draw near to God. Inasmuch as he
- 12:33Speaker 1: was not made priest without taking the oath, for they
- 12:36Speaker 1: indeed have been made priest without an oath, but he
- 12:38Speaker 1: with an oath by him that says of him the
- 12:41Speaker 1: Lord swore and will not change his mind. You are
- 12:44Speaker 1: a priest forever, according to the order of Melchisedic. So
- 12:47Speaker 1: in other words, God himself made this oath he swore,
- 12:51Speaker 1: is what it says in a Psalm one ten. And
- 12:54Speaker 1: he swore it and will not change his mind. Jesus
- 12:57Speaker 1: is a priest forever, a cording to the order of Malchisedek.
- 13:02Speaker 1: And because of this oath that God himself swore. It says,
- 13:05Speaker 1: there is an annulling of a foregoing commandment because of
- 13:09Speaker 1: its weakness and uselessness, for the law made nothing perfect.
- 13:13Speaker 1: And earlier in verse twelve it says the priesthood is
- 13:15Speaker 1: being changed. There is necessity of a change made also
- 13:19Speaker 1: in the law. So this might make you question at
- 13:22Speaker 1: this point, well, God is not changing, so why would
- 13:25Speaker 1: he change the law. This is something that I thought.
- 13:28Speaker 1: In fact, James, Chapter one, verse seventeen says this about
- 13:32Speaker 1: God from the NIV version. Every good and perfect gift
- 13:36Speaker 1: is from above, coming down from the Father of the
- 13:38Speaker 1: heavenly lights, who does not change like a shifting shadow.
- 13:44Speaker 1: So God doesn't change. That is true. So then how
- 13:48Speaker 1: and why are the laws being changed, you might ask.
- 13:51Speaker 1: It's important to know that there are three different types
- 13:54Speaker 1: of Old Testament law. The first is moral, the second
- 13:58Speaker 1: is civil, and the third is ceremonial. And I think
- 14:01Speaker 1: actually there might have been one more. I can't remember
- 14:03Speaker 1: what the fourth one is, if there is a fourth one.
- 14:05Speaker 1: But yet, just know that there are different types of
- 14:08Speaker 1: Old Testament laws, and you can tell which law is
- 14:12Speaker 1: which because the moral laws such as thou shalt not
- 14:16Speaker 1: murder are repeated as something that you should not do
- 14:20Speaker 1: in the New Testament. Every single moral law is repeated
- 14:24Speaker 1: in the New Testament. So you know that if the
- 14:27Speaker 1: Old Testament law says thou shalt not murder, and Jesus
- 14:31Speaker 1: talks about how evil murder is in his Sermon on
- 14:33Speaker 1: the Mount, then you can deduce that that is a
- 14:36Speaker 1: moral law, basically something that affects your heart and your
- 14:40Speaker 1: direct relationship with Jesus. But then there are other types
- 14:44Speaker 1: of laws in the Old Testament, such as the civil laws,
- 14:47Speaker 1: which is how Israel was supposed to be governed, what
- 14:51Speaker 1: the kingship looked like, what the judges looked like, anything
- 14:56Speaker 1: related to civil authorities essentially. And then there was the
- 15:00Speaker 1: ceremonial laws, such as eating certain foods or not touching
- 15:05Speaker 1: dead bodies or I don't know, being ceremonially clean. Those
- 15:09Speaker 1: were the ceremonial laws. The moral laws of the Old
- 15:12Speaker 1: Testament are never going to change because God does not change.
- 15:17Speaker 1: He does not cast a shifting shadow, is what it says.
- 15:22Speaker 1: But the other laws not related to morality, such as
- 15:25Speaker 1: the priesthood, those laws are being changed because even though
- 15:29Speaker 1: God doesn't change, human beings and situations do in fact change.
- 15:35Speaker 1: The old order of the levitical law served the people
- 15:39Speaker 1: very well at that time period, but that has been fulfilled.
- 15:43Speaker 1: It actually says in Hebrew seven that it's becoming obsolete.
- 15:46Speaker 1: It says there is an annulling of a foregoing commandment
- 15:49Speaker 1: because of its weakness and uselessness. For the law made
- 15:52Speaker 1: nothing perfect, and a bringing on of a better hope
- 15:56Speaker 1: through which we draw near to God. Inasmuch as He
- 15:59Speaker 1: was not made priest without the taking of an oath,
- 16:01Speaker 1: But he with an oath by him that says of him,
- 16:04Speaker 1: the Lord's sworn will not change his mind. You are
- 16:07Speaker 1: a priest forever according to the Order of Melchisedek. So
- 16:10Speaker 1: that's another way how God didn't change. Jesus has always
- 16:13Speaker 1: been a priest in the Order of Melchisedek. From the
- 16:16Speaker 1: very beginning, it says, Jesus forever is a priest according
- 16:20Speaker 1: to the Order of Malchisedek. So Jesus certainly has not
- 16:24Speaker 1: changed in his priesthood. But until Jesus came down to
- 16:27Speaker 1: Earth at the necessary and proper time, the priests, by
- 16:30Speaker 1: the order of Aaron and Moses were the best way
- 16:34Speaker 1: for the people to get close to God the Father
- 16:37Speaker 1: and to have the forgiveness of sins through the shed blood.
- 16:41Speaker 1: So I hope that makes sense to you, guys. And
- 16:43Speaker 1: then to finish out here in verse twenty two. By
- 16:46Speaker 1: so much, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.
- 16:51Speaker 1: This is exactly what Jesus said to his disciples at
- 16:54Speaker 1: the Last Supper. He said to them, this is a
- 16:57Speaker 1: new covenant I give you. And he held out the wine,
- 17:01Speaker 1: and he held out the bread, and he said, this
- 17:03Speaker 1: is my body and my blood which is broken, for
- 17:06Speaker 1: you do this in remembrance of me. So Jesus guaranteed
- 17:11Speaker 1: a better covenant to all of his people, and that
- 17:14Speaker 1: is what we live under right now. We don't live
- 17:17Speaker 1: under the ceremonial laws of the Old Testament any longer.
- 17:20Speaker 1: We live under Jesus being our high priest in the
- 17:24Speaker 1: Order of Malchisa dec We don't need to go to
- 17:26Speaker 1: a human priest and offer a sacrifice any longer because
- 17:30Speaker 1: Jesus has done all of that for us. We can
- 17:33Speaker 1: go to Jesus, our high Priest, with no sacrifice, and say, Jesus,
- 17:38Speaker 1: thank you for the sacrifice that you gave me. It
- 17:41Speaker 1: is sufficient and I have forgiveness through your sacrifice. Well,
- 17:45Speaker 1: thank you so much everybody for making it to the
- 17:47Speaker 1: end of the podcast with me. But it's not over
- 17:50Speaker 1: just yet. I'm going to go to an ad break,
- 17:52Speaker 1: and then after that I will talk to you about
- 17:55Speaker 1: what's going to be happening next week on the Bible Explaining,
- 17:58Speaker 1: because don't forget. Today is the last last episode of
- 18:01Speaker 1: season ten. So here's a quick ad break from one
- 18:03Speaker 1: of our sponsors, and I'll be back right after that.
- 18:08Speaker 1: On Monday, we start season eleven with the Book of Ezra,
- 18:12Speaker 1: and I'm looking forward to talking about the Book of
- 18:14Speaker 1: Ezra because it's going to be so different than anything
- 18:17Speaker 1: I've covered on the podcast so far on the Old
- 18:19Speaker 1: Testament side of stuff, because this is talking about the
- 18:22Speaker 1: history of the Israelites after they get back from the
- 18:25Speaker 1: Babylonian exile. And the Book of Ezra is a really
- 18:29Speaker 1: bizarre book in a lot of ways. In fact, it
- 18:32Speaker 1: kind of ends on a very depressing note. So we'll
- 18:36Speaker 1: get into the Book of Ezra starting on Monday, and
- 18:38Speaker 1: I'm looking forward to talking about that book with all
- 18:40Speaker 1: of you guys. Now, don't forget my seasons go with
- 18:42Speaker 1: the Old Testament, not with the New Testament. So we're
- 18:45Speaker 1: going to remain in Hebrews on Tuesday and finish out
- 18:48Speaker 1: chapter seven talking about the priests and Jesus's blood being sufficient.
